Abstract
A self-consistent analysis of proton and deuterium nuclear spin relaxation times in the smectic phases of a partially deuterated smectogen is presented here. Proton spin-lattice relaxation times T(1Z) were measured as a function of Larmor frequency over a range of 1 kHz to 300 MHz at selected temperatures. Deuterium spin relaxation times T(1Z) and T(1Q) were measured as a function of temperature at two different magnetic fields in the smectic A phase. The deuterium data provide dynamic parameters such as rotational diffusion constants and internal jump rates as well as the nematic order parameter S. The proton data are analyzed using a number of relaxation mechanisms, one of which is the molecular reorientation. It is found helpful in these latter analyses to use the nematic order parameter and to fix the contribution from molecular reorientations determined by the deuterium spin relaxation. The fits to the proton T(1) frequency and temperature dispersions by the remaining relaxation mechanisms such as layer undulations and translational self-diffusion will be discussed for the smectic A and chiral smectic C phases.

Abstract
We argue that near a Kondo breakdown critical point, a spin liquid with spatial modulations can form. Unlike its uniform counterpart, we find that this occurs via a second order phase transition. The amount of entropy quenched when ordering is of the same magnitude as for an antiferromagnet. Moreover, the two states are competitive, and at low temperatures are separated by a first order phase transition. The modulated spin liquid we find breaks Z4 symmetry, as recently seen in the hidden order phase of URu2Si2. Based on this, we suggest that the modulated spin liquid is a viable candidate for this unique phase of matter.

Abstract
Within the recently proposed doped-carrier representation of the projected lattice electron operators we derive a full Ising version of the t-J model. This model possesses the global discrete Z(2) symmetry as a maximal spin symmetry of the Hamiltonian at any values of the coupling constants, t and J. In contrast, in the spin anisotropic limit of the t-J model, usually referred to as the t-J(z) model, the global SU(2) invariance is fully restored at J(z) = 0, so that only the spin-spin interaction has in this model the true Ising form. We discuss a relationship between these two models and the standard isotropic t-J model. We show that the low-energy quasiparticles in all three models share qualitatively similar properties at low doping and small values of J/t. The main advantage of the proposed Ising t-J model over the t-J(z) one is that the former allows for the unbiased Monte Carlo calculations on large clusters of up to 10(3) sites. Within this model we discuss in detail the destruction of the antiferromagnetic (AF) order by doping as well as the interplay between the AF order and hole mobility. We also discuss the effect of the exchange interaction and that of the next-nearest-neighbour hoppings on the destruction of the AF order at finite doping. We show that the short-range AF order is observed in a wide range of temperatures and dopings, much beyond the boundaries of the AF phase. We explicitly demonstrate that the local no-double-occupancy constraint plays the dominant role in destroying the magnetic order at finite doping. Finally, a role of inhomogeneities is discussed.

Abstract
This study reports deuterium nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) spectra collected at 61.4MHz in the chiral smectic- C phase of liquid crystal 4{'}(octyloxy)-d{17} biphenyl-4- yl2 -chloro-3-methylpentanoate (BP8Cl). By using a goniometer probe, the oriented sample was rotated to collect spectra at different rotation (theta) angles. These spectra were simulated to gain information on solitonlike distortions in the helical superstructure. The Landau theory was adopted to study the distortion of the helix by the NMR magnetic field. Deuterium two-dimensional exchange experiments were also used on the aligned sample at theta=15 degrees to obtain dynamic parameters through the spectral simulation. The interlayer diffusion constants in the SmC{*} phase were estimated from a proton T(1) dispersion study. The pitch length of BP8Cl is estimated to be circa 2-3 microns at one temperature.

Abstract
AIMS Ceriporiopsis subvermispora produces endoglucanase and beta-glucosidase when cultivated on cellulose or wood, but biodegradation of cellulose during biopulping by C. subvermispora is low even after long periods. To resolve this discrepancy, we grew C. subvermispora on Pinus taeda wood chips and purified the major beta-glucosidases it produced. Kinetic parameters were determined to clear if this fungus produces enzymes capable of yielding assimilable glucose from wood. METHODS AND RESULTS Ceriporiopsis subvermispora was grown on P. taeda wood chips under solid-state fermentation. After 30 days, the crude extract obtained from enzyme extraction with sodium acetate buffer 50 mmol l(-1), pH 5.4, was filtrated in membranes with a molecular mass exclusion limit of 100 kDa. Enzyme purification was carried out using successively Sephacryl S-300 gel filtration. The retained fraction attained 76% of beta-glucosidase activity with 3.7-fold purification. Two beta-glucosidases were detected with molecular mass of 110 and 53 kDa. We have performed a characterization of the enzymatic properties of the beta-glucosidase of 110 kDa. The optimum pH and temperature were 3.5 and 60 degrees C, respectively. The K(m) and V(max) values were respectively 3.29 mmol l(-1) and 0.113 micromol min(-1) for the hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl-beta-glucopyranoside (pNPG) and 2.63 mmol l(-1) and 0.103 micromol min(-1), towards cellobiose. beta-Glucosidase activity was strongly increased by Mn(2+) and Fe(3+), while Cu(2+) severely inhibited it. CONCLUSIONS Ceriporiopsis subvermispora produces small amounts of beta-glucosidase when grown on wood. The gel filtration and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis data revealed the existence of two beta-glucosidases with 110 and 53 kDa. The 110 kDa beta-glucosidase from C. subvermispora can be efficiently purified in a single step by gel filtration chromatography. The enzyme has an acid pH optimum with similar activity on pNPG and cellobiose and is thus typical beta-glucosidase. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Ceriporiopsis subvermispora produces beta-glucosidase with limited action during wood decay making able its use for the production of biomechanical and biochemical pulps. The results presented in this paper show the importance of studying the behaviour of beta-glucosidases during biopulping.

Abstract
The production of hemicellulose and cellulose degrading enzymes by the white-rot fungus Ceriporiopsis subvermispora was determined while growing in Pinus taeda wood chips. Enzymes produced by the fungus were extracted after 30 days of cultivation and at least two different xylanases were secreted. An endo-(1,4)-beta-xylanase was purified by means of ultrafiltration, anion exchange chromatography and gel filtration. Its molecular mass was 29 kDa and the pH and temperature optima were 5.0 and 60 degrees C, respectively. The endo-xylanase was able to hydrolyze xylan to principally xylotriose and xylotetraose and it has different activities against different xylans. With birchwood xylan as substrate, the enzyme showed a K(m) of 1.93 mg/ml and specific activity of 538 units/mg protein at 50 degrees C.

Abstract
Crude methanolic extracts and fractions from the aerial parts of seven species of Hypericum (H. caprifoliatum Cham. and Schltdl., H. carinatum Griseb., H. connatum Lam., H. ternum A. St.-Hil., H. myrianthum Cham. and Schltdl., H. piriai Arechav. and H. polyanthemum Klotzsch ex Reichardt) growing in southern Brazil were analyzed for their in vitro antifungal activity against a panel of standardized and clinical opportunistic pathogenic yeasts and filamentous fungi, including dermatophytes, by the agar dilution method. Chloroform and hexane extracts of H. ternum showed the greatest activity among extracts tested.

Abstract
The crude methanolic extracts of six species of Hypericum growing in southern Brazil (Hypericum caprifoliatum Cham. & Schlecht., H. carinatum Griseb., H. connatum Lam., H. myrianthum Cham. & Schlecht., H. polyanthemum Klotzsch ex Reichardt and H. ternum A. St. Hil.) were screened for their antiproliferative activity against two cell lines (HT-29 human colon carcinoma cells and H-460 non-small cell lung carcinoma). The most active crude extracts were those from H. caprifoliatum, H. myrianthum and, to a lesser extent, from H. connatum. All plants were submitted to fractionation with solvents in increasing polarity and re-assayed for the two cell lines used previously, as well as U-373 human malignant glioma cells. The most active fractions were the hexane fractions obtained from H. caprifoliatum, H. myrianthum and H. ternum.

Abstract
The crude methanolic extracts of six species of Hypericum [H. caprifoliatum Cham. & Schlecht., H. carinatum Griseb., H. connatum Lam., H. ternum A. St. Hil., H. myrianthum Cham. & Schlecht. and H. polyanthemum Klotzsch ex Reichardt] growing in southern Brazil were analyzed for antimicrobial activity against several microorganisms (bacteria and fungi). The most active plant was H. caprifoliatum, which showed activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Only H. polyanthemum and H. ternum extracts were active against Bacillus subtilis. None of the crude methanolic extracts showed activity against S. epidermidis, Escherichia coli or Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Extracts from these species were evaluated chemically and tannin, flavonoid and phenolic acids were the prominent compounds. The plants contained quercitrin, hyperoside (except H. connatum) and, less frequently, isoquercitrin and chlorogenic acid. In contrast to H. perforatum, which has high concentrations of rutin, these species do not produce this flavonoid or it appears as traces. The tannin concentration varied between 5.1 and 16.7% in H. myrianthum and H. ternum, respectively.

Abstract
Release of herbicides from lignin-based formulations follows a diffusion-controlled mechanism. For mathematical modeling of diffusive transport, the conventional approach is to assume sink conditions at both surfaces of polymeric matrix. This boundary condition proved to be inadequate to describe experimental data obtained in a water dynamic bath system. However, satisfactory descriptions for this system were obtained when a stagnant unstirred layer of herbicide solution was used as the boundary condition. The adequacy of the model incorporating this new boundary condition was statistically tested using the Fisher test at a confidence level of 95% and plotting the residual distribution.

Abstract
The total methanol crude extracts and petroleum ether, chloroform, and methanol fractions obtained from Hypericum species, H. caprifoliatum, H. carinatum, H. connatum, H. cordatum, H. myrianthum, H. piriai, H. polyanthemum and H. brasiliense, all native to South Brazil, were assayed for monoamine oxidase A (MAO A) and MAO B inhibitory activity in rat brain mitochondrial preparations at concentrations ranging from 1 to 20microg mL(-1). Three benzopyrans, HP1 (6-isobutyryl-5,7-dimethoxy-2,2-dimethylbenzopyran), HP2 (7-hydroxy-6-isobutyryl-5-methoxy-2,2-dimethylbenzopyran) and HP3 (5-hydroxy-6-isobutyryl-7-methoxy-2,2dimethylbenzopyran) isolated from H. polyanthemum were also tested at maximal concentrations of 150, 150 and 75/microM, respectively. The lipophilic extracts of H. polyanthemum, H. caprifoliatum and H. piriai displayed MAO A inhibitory activity greater than 50%. Among the benzopyrans, only HP3 showed significant activity, with an IC50 value of 22 microM. The total methanol crude extracts of aerial parts from H. carinatum, H. connatum, H. cordatum, H. polyanthemum and H. piriai were evaluated for antidepressant activity in the Porsolt's forced swimming test in Wistar rats (270 mg kg(-1) day(-1); i.p); however, none of them showed activity.

Abstract
Brown precipitates were obtained by polymerization of low molecular weight lignin fragments contained in a model effluent. Polymerization reactions were initiated by potato-polyphenoloxidase (PPO) or horseradish peroxidase/H(2)O(2) system (HRP/H(2)O(2)). The insolubilization processes occurred after a molecular weight increase of the lignin, as shown by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The effect of reaction time, pH and amount of soluble lignin per unit of enzyme activity on the molecular weight distribution was evaluated for PPO-initiated reactions. For HRP-initiated system the amount of H(2)O(2) per unit of enzyme activity was also evaluated. Chemical characterization of the macromolecules obtained under optimized conditions and the soluble lignin fragments present in the effluent suggests that the polymerization reactions occur by oxidative cleavage of alpha-beta unsaturated bonds of the soluble lignin fragments. Methoxyl group analysis showed that p-hydroxycoumaryl units were preferentially oxidized by PPO. In contrast, HRP oxidized preferentially guaiacyl and siringyl units giving more condensed polymers.

Abstract
The herbicides applied in soils can be easily lost, owing to leaching, volatilization, and bio- and photodegradation. Controlled-release systems using polymeric matrices claim to solve these problems. The movement of the herbicides in the soil is also an important phenomenon to be studied in order to evaluate the loss processes. The development of mathematical models is a relevant requirement for simulation and optimization of such systems. This study reviews mathematical models as an initial step for modeling data obtained for controlled-release systems of herbicides (diuron, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, and ametryn) using sugarcane bagasse lignin as a polymeric matrix. The release kinetic studies were carried out using several acceptor systems including a water bath, soil, and soil-packed columns. Generally, these models take into account phenomena such as unsteady-state mass transfer by diffusion (Fick's law) and convection, consumption by several processes, and partitioning processes, resulting in partial differential equations with respect to time and space variables.

Abstract
The authors present the preliminary results of 20 patients selected to be operated on between January 1996 and April 1997. These patients presented one of the present indications for stereotactic posteroventral pallidotomy (PVP), such as: rigidity, akinesia/bradykinesia, gait dysfunction, drug induced dyskinesias and tremor. Every patient of this protocol was evaluated by: UPDRS score, Schwab and England scale, Hoehn and Yahr Staging Scale before and after surgery. The results in 3 months showed a remarkable improvement after PVP (P < 0.01) in all functional assessments, except for facial expression, speech and posture. The morbidity was 5%. 5 patients (25%) who were in Hoehn and Yahr 5 underwent a bilateral simultaneous PVP. In 5 patients (25%), who had tremor, during the PVP, VIM thalamotomy was added. These preliminary results, suggest that PVP is highly effective for PD symptoms.

Abstract
Prospective series showing the importance of computerized stereotactic brain biopsy in the management of AIDS patients neurologically symptomatic and confirmed by images. Patients undergone an algorithm step by step done by their own doctors and referred to us for stereotactic biopsy. Our protocol was opened in August 1995 and closed in December 1996. Twenty patients were biopsied. This protocol is similar to the Levy's one (Chicago IL, USA). We have got diagnosis in all cases. Lymphoma was predominant and followed by toxoplasmosis, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy and HIV encephalopathy. We included one patient with diploic giant cells lymphoma. Our mortality and morbidity was zero. By these results we conclude that stereotactic biopsy in AIDS patients is safe and effective.

Abstract
In a series of 44 image guided stereotactic biopsy from August 1995 until March 1997, findings were as follows (frequency order). Tumors, glioblastoma was the most frequent. Primary lymphoma and other conditions associated to AIDS. Metastasis, three cases, Vasculites, two cases, Arachnoid cyst, Creutzfeldt-Jakob, cortical degeneration, inespecific calcification (one case each). The age varied from 1 to 83 years. Forty one lesions were supratentorial, two infratentorial, and one was outside the brain (dura and skull) and we used stereotaxy to localize it. There was no mortality and morbidity was 2.3%. The literature is reviewed. We conclude that this procedure is safe and highly diagnostic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Identification of high-risk patients and defining prognostic factors may be useful in the treatment of head and neck cancer. The role of the lymph node reactivity is still obscure. The value of the node reactivity pattern as a predictor of tumor control in oral cavity cancer was analyzed. METHODS Retrospective analysis of patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC), submitted to tumor resection and neck dissection, with pathologic negative lymph nodes (pN0). Dominant node reactivity pattern was defined as lymphocytic predominance (LP), germinal centers (GC), normal (NL), sinus hystiocytosis (SH), and lymphocytic depletion (LD). Clinical and pathological characteristics of patients free of disease (DF) were compared with those of patients with control failure (CF), which included local, regional, and distant recurrences. RESULTS Of the 26 patients with pN0 OCSCC, prevalence of SH was found in 10 cases, GC in 13, and LD, NL and PL in 1 case each. Comparing CF and DF groups, there was no significant statistical difference regarding: age, gender, performance status index, weight loss, smoking and drinking habits, complementary treatment, average follow-up, tumor grade or thickness, margins, or tumor inflammatory and desmoplastic reaction. Although there was a higher proportion of perineural invasion and larger tumors in the CF group, the difference was not statistically significant either. Germinal centers or LP were noted in only 27% of the CF group and in 73% of the DF group. Collectively, NL, SH, or LD patterns were observed in 73% of CF. This incidence was statistically different from 27% of the DF group (P <0.05). CONCLUSIONS Lymph node reactivity pattern seems to be a prognostic index in pN0 OCSCC patients. Prospective analysis is advised to confirm these results. Prophylactic neck dissection as a staging procedure could select high-risk patients even when no metastasis is found.

Abstract
AIM To investigate immunocytochemical changes in intestinal tissues from patients with intra-abdominal sepsis, and to relate the changes to the possibility of enhanced bacterial adhesion and translocation. METHODS Tissues from 17 patients suffering from intra-abdominal sepsis and from controls were sectioned and stained immunocytochemically for IgA, IgM, secretory component, J chain, and HLA-DR. Differences in the distribution and characteristics of positively staining cells between the patient groups were assessed. RESULTS Patients with intra-abdominal sepsis had noticeable reductions in numbers of IgA and IgM plasma cells, reduced J chain staining, and had little immunoglobulin on the surfaces of enterocytes. In contrast, HLA-DR positive cells were increased in the sepsis compared with the control group. The plasma cells present showed cytological changes suggestive of apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS Stress associated with sepsis and its immediate causes might result in increased plasma glucocorticoid levels that bring about apoptosis of mucosal plasma cells (or their precursors). The consequent reduction in expression of IgA and IgM may favour bacterial adhesion to the enterocytes and facilitate bacterial translocation into the tissues.

Abstract
The lignin biodegradation process has an important role in the carbon cycle of the biosphere. The study of this natural process has developed mainly with the use of basidiomycetes in laboratory investigations. This has been a logical approach since most of the microorganisms involved in lignocellulosic degradation belong to this class of fungi. However, other microorganisms such as ascomycetes and also some bacteria, are involved in the lignin decaying process. This work focuses on lignin biodegradation by a microorganism belonging to the ascomycete class, Chrysonilia sitophila. Lignin peroxidase production and characterization, mechanisms of lignin degradation (lignin model compounds and lignin in wood matrix) and biosynthesis of veratryl alcohol are outstanding. Applications of C. sitophila for effluent treatment, wood biodegradation and single-cell protein production are also discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) represent a tissue marker of cell proliferative activity. The purpose of this study was to assess the prognostic value of AgNORs expression in oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). METHODS The AgNORs area/nucleus was studied in paraffin sections by means of digital image analysis in 43 cases of stage II oral tongue and floor of the mouth SCC. RESULTS Time free of disease was considered a dependent variable of a binary indicator of AgNORs expression (7.77 microns2/nucleus as a cut-off point). High AgNORs level was associated with a statistically significant negative effect on recurrence-free interval of disease in a Cox proportional hazards models controlled for occult lymph node metastasis, involvement of the surgical margins, thickness of the lesion, and vascular invasion. CONCLUSIONS The AgNORs area increased the capability of predicting which patients have a high risk of recurrence of cancer, and its evaluation may provide useful information for the therapeutic approach to the oral tongue and floor of the mouth SCC.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVE To determine the safety of ciprofibrate in portuguese patients with dyslipidaemia. DESIGN Open-label study with 6-month therapy. PARTICIPANTS Sequential sample of 40 patients, 20 from each hospital, 37 patients (92.5%) completed the study. METHODS After at least one month of diet or washout period, all participants were given 100 mg/day of ciprofibrate, taken after the evening meal. Analysis and clinical examinations were performed at weeks (-4), (0), (+8), (+16) and (+24). Glycemia, uric acid, creatine kinase, creatinine and transaminases were determined. MAIN RESULTS Thirty-seven patients ended the study (92.5%), three abandoned because of gastrointestinal adverse effects, six other patients also complaint of gastrointestinal side effects. The creatinine and creatine kinase levels increased 9.7% and 19.2%, although kept in the normal range. There were no statistically significant changes in glycemia, uric acid and transaminases levels. CONCLUSIONS These results confirm the high safety of ciprofibrate in patients with dislipidaemia. The short term of this study does not allows taking conclusions about long term use of this drug.
