Abstract
This experiment was conducted to determine the interaction effects that resulted from supplementation of low-protein diets with leucine (Leu), valine (Val), and glycine-glutamic acid (Gly-Glu) on growing broiler chicks from 11 to 24 days old. Two levels of digestible Leu (1.07 and 1.50%) and three levels of digestible Val (0.64, 0.74, and 0.84%) were investigated as a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement of treatments with 12 replicates. The diet with 1.07% digestible Leu and 0.84% digestible Val was supplemented with 0.34% Gly and 1.32% Glu as an additional treatment (T7). At 24 days old, 0.84% Val significantly improved feed conversion with 1.07% Leu, but 0.74% Val was sufficient with 1.50% Leu. The T7 diet further improved feed conversion. Increasing dietary Val from 0.64% to 0.74% significantly increased bone density and strength at the lower level of dietary Leu, while T7 significantly increased tibia breaking strength. There were significant Leu × Val interactions for villus height, crypt depth, and goblet cell numbers. Val at 0.84% maximized the development of the jejunum at the lower Leu level, while goblet cell number and crypt depth were impaired by increments of Val at the higher level of Leu. In conclusion, increasing the level of Val in low-protein grower diets significantly improved performance, bone and jejunum development of broilers, and its interaction with Leu was important. Therefore, these two amino acids (AAs) and the possibility of Gly-Glu fortification must be considered when formulating low-protein broiler diets.

Association between seroprevalence of measles and various social determinants in the year following a measles outbreak in Turkey. Public Health 2017; 147:51-58. [PMID: 28404496 DOI: 10.1016/j.puhe.2017.01.026] [Citation(s) in RCA: 5] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.7] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/07/2016] [Revised: 11/25/2016] [Accepted: 01/25/2017] [Indexed: 11/24/2022]
Abstract
OBJECTIVES Despite an ongoing measles elimination programme, a measles outbreak occurred in 2013 in Turkey. Population-based seroprevalence studies are needed to determine seronegativity and explore the reasons for this outbreak. This study aimed to explore the seroprevalence of measles and its association with various social determinants in a provincial population in Turkey in the year following a measles outbreak. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHODS This study was conducted in Manisa Province in 2014 in a sample of 1740 people aged >2 years. The dependent variable was the seroprevalence of measles. Independent variables were sex, age, migration, household size, household density, income, education level, existence of chronic disease and occupational class. Blood samples were collected from participants at family health centres. The presence of specific measles antibodies in serum samples was determined using an anti-measles virus IgG enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test. Chi-squared test and logistic regression analysis were performed. RESULTS Overall, data from 1250 people were analysed. The seroprevalence of measles in the whole study population was 82.2% (95% confidence interval 80.0-84.2). Seroprevalence was 55.4% among subjects aged 2-9 years, 48.7% among subjects aged 10-19 years, 74.1% among subjects aged 20-29 years and 93.6% among subjects aged 30-39 years (P < 0.01). Seroprevalence in subjects aged >40 years was >95%. The lowest seroprevalence was found in primary school children (40.2%), followed by those below the age for primary education (69.8%) and secondary school graduates (75.1%). The prevalence of measles seronegativity was not associated with any of the social determinants when adjusted for age. CONCLUSIONS The seroprevalence of measles was lower than expected in the study population and was particularly low in subjects aged <30 years of age despite previous vaccination. Seroprevalence was not associated with social determinants of health that confirmed either an even distribution of virus exposure or fair access to vaccination services. However, the current seroprevalence cannot be sufficiently effective to reach the measles elimination targets, suggesting that it may be necessary to re-evaluate the need for an extra dose of measles vaccine.

Abstract
Porcine-induced pluripotent stem cells (piPSC) have been established since 2009, but only 1 report demonstrated contribution to germline chimeras. One well-established in vivo pluripotency assay is the teratoma assay, which has recently been questioned due to the lack of standardized guidelines. In the present study we have characterised GFP-tagged in vitro and in vivo tetracycline-inducible piPSC [porcine MYC, SOX2, KLF4 (pOMSK)] and their capacity to form teratomas. We injected 1.5 million cells in 250 µL of PBS subcutaneous into NOD/SCID mice and followed them up to 6 weeks. The teratomas were analysed by immunohistochemistry for the 3 germlayer markers β3 tubulin, α fetoprotein, and smooth muscle actin. We not only found our teratomas positive for these markers, but also co-positive for GFP, clearly showing that the teratoma was made from porcine cells, which was not sufficiently proven in former studies. Our H&E staining revealed the following structures: cuboidal ephitelium, thyroid-like structure, renal corpuscle, and steroid producing cells. We continued to test the capacity of our venus iPS cells to contribute to in vitro chimeras. To achieve this we used a micromanipulator to inject 15 cells into Day 5 parthenotes, and subsequently cultured them in PZM3 with 10% FCS, cultured with or without doxycycline. These in vitro chimeras were followed until Day 7 in Nikons Biostation IM and used for differential staining. In all groups we saw good survival, hatching, and maintenance of GFP, indicating integration of these cells in our in vitro assay. We only found differences between survivals of the cell lines in the group cultured with doxycycline. Finally, in order to assess if the naïve type venus iPS cells could possibly be a truly naïve piPSC, we tested their capacity to form in vivo germline chimeras. This was tested by injecting 15 piPSC into Day 4 to 5 in vivo embryos. The injected embryos were transferred into 5 surrogate mothers, 3 of them were fed doxycycline before the transfer and 5 days after, and the last 2 recipient sows were not fed doxycycline. The pregnancies were terminated at Day 32 and the embryos were examined for fluorescence and the GFP transgene by PCR. In summary, it appears that both naïve type and primed type venus iPS cells are still strongly dependent on the pOMSK transgene expression, and the ultimate proof for pluripotency, the chimera production, seems to be not achievable under the condition we have chosen.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Peripheral nerve injury may result in chronic neuropathic pain, which is characterized by spontaneous pain, hyperalgesia, and allodynia. Intrathecal administration of opioids and α2-adrenoceptor agonists produces spinal analgesia by activation of opioidergic and noradrenergic systems. In our study, we have compared the synergistic antiallodynic interaction and side-effects of intrathecal morphine and dexmedetomidine in a rat model of neuropathic pain. METHODS Male Wistar rats, weighing 380-440 g, were treated with tight ligation of left L5-6 spinal nerves and a chronic catheter was implanted intrathecally. Morphine and dexmedetomidine were administered intrathecally to obtain the dose-response curves and the 50 % effective doses (ED50) for each drug and fractional analysis of the ED50 of each drug administered concurrently was performed to examine the interaction. Mechanical allodynia was measured by using application of von Frey filaments to the hindpaw. RESULTS Intrathecal administration of morphine and dexmedetomidine alone and in combination resulted in a dose-dependent antiallodynic effect, and the combination produced a synergistic effect-state magnitude. Moreover, the incidence of side-effects was higher when morphine or dexmedetomidine were administered in high doses alone and extremely low when these two drugs were used in combination. These results are suggestive of a synergistic effect at lower doses of both drugs. CONCLUSIONS These findings may provide a rationale for combining such drugs for the improvement of human postoperative or neuropathic pain treatment in the future.

Non-equilibrium cation distribution and enhanced spin disorder in hollow CoFe2O4 nanoparticles. JOURNAL OF PHYSICS. CONDENSED MATTER : AN INSTITUTE OF PHYSICS JOURNAL 2012; 24:336004. Abstract
We present magnetic properties of hollow and solid CoFe(2)O(4) nanoparticles that were obtained by annealing of Co(33)Fe(67)/CoFe(2)O(4) (core/shell) nanoparticles. Hollow nanoparticles were polycrystalline whereas the solid nanoparticles were mostly single crystal. Electronic structure studies were performed by photoemission which revealed that particles with hollow morphology have a higher degree of inversion compared to solid nanoparticles and the bulk counterpart. Electronic structure and the magnetic measurements show that particles have uncompensated spins. Quantitative comparison of saturation magnetization (M(S )), assuming bulk Néel type spin structure with cationic distribution, calculated from quantitative XPS analysis, is presented. The thickness of uncompensated spins is calculated to be significantly large for particles with hollow morphology compared to solid nanoparticles. Both morphologies show a lack of saturation up to 7 T. Moreover magnetic irreversibility exists up to 7 T of cooling fields for the entire temperature range (10-300 K). These effects are due to the large bulk anisotropy constant of CoFe(2)O(4) which is the highest among the cubic spinel ferrites. The effect of the uncompensated spins for hollow nanoparticles was investigated by cooling the sample in large fields of up to 9 T. The magnitude of horizontal shift resulting from the unidirectional anisotropy was more than three times larger than that of solid nanoparticles. As an indication signature of uncompensated spin structure, 11% vertical shift for hollow nanoparticles is observed, whereas solid nanoparticles do not show a similar shift. Deconvolution of the hysteresis response recorded at 300 K reveals the presence of a significant paramagnetic component for particles with hollow morphology which further confirms enhanced spin disorder.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The percentage of elderly patients with colorectal liver metastases (CLM) has increased. Liver resection remains the only curative therapy; data evaluating the outcome in this age group is limited. Aim of the present study was to determine if postoperative morbidity, mortality, and other independent predictors influence survival in patients ≥ 70 years undergoing liver resection for CLM. METHODS Clinical data on primary tumor and metastases of 939 patients after liver resection for CLM between 1994 and 2008 were retrospectively collected and subdivided in three age-groups (≥ 70, 40-69, <40). Independent predictors of survival were evaluated with overall and age-specific univariate and multivariate Cox regression models. RESULTS A total of 939 patients underwent liver resection for CLM, 20.3% aged ≥ 70 years. Overall postoperative mortality and morbidity were 1.08 and 14.82%, revealing no age-related differences. With 5-year survival of 31.8% in the elderly and 37.5% in the mid-age population, age ≥ 70 years was linked with decreased survival (Hazard Ratio [HR] = 1.305; P = 0.0186). Multivariate overall analyses showed size of CLM > 50 mm (HR = 1.376; P = 0.0060), a high amount of transfusion during surgery (HR = 1.676; P = 0.0110), duration of surgery >210 min (HR = 1.241; P = 0.0322), primary UICC (International Union Against Cancer) stage IV (HR = 2.297; P < 0.0001), and performance of repeat resections (HR = 0.652; P = 0.0107) as independent predictors of survival. In the elderly group, effects of UICC IV (HR = 3.260; P = 0.0148) and high numbers of transfusions (HR = 3.647; P = 0.0129) were confirmed; the others did not show statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS Resection of CLM at older age is feasible with morbidity and mortality rates similar to those in younger patients. Although age ≥ 70 was shown to be associated with poorer overall outcome, reasonable 5-year survival was observed.

Abstract
Congenital myasthenic syndromes (CMS) are diseases of the neuromuscular junction. They usually belong to the disease groups that begin in the infantile or childhood period and carry genetic characteristics. The following is important in establishing the diagnosis of this disease: clinical findings, electromyography, genetic tests, determination of serum acetylcholine receptor antibodies. Acetylcholine esterase inhibitor drugs are used in treatment of CMS. A seven-month old male patient was brought to our department with the complaints of difficult breathing, falling of the eyelids and swallowing difficulty. With clinical and laboratory findings, he was diagnosed with congenital myasthenia and treatment was started. CMS should be suspected in patients with no pathological findings on the physical examination, and normal chest X-rays.

Abstract
Baller-Gerold Syndrome (BGS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that is apparent at birth. The disorder is characterized by distinctive malformations of the skull and facial area and bones of the forearms and hands. We report a 4 year old boy in whom the clinical features of craniosynostosis and bilateral absent thumbs and radii led to a diagnosis of Baller-Gerold syndrome. Physical examination revealed that the heart was localized to the right side. Echocardiography confirmed dextrocardia. Dextrocardia has not previously been reported with Baller-Gerold syndrome. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of Baller-Gerold syndrome associated with dextrocardia.

Abstract
Unilateral vocal fold agenesis: an unusual cause of dysphonia. Unilateral vocal fold agenesis is a rare congenital laryngeal anomaly. To our knowledge, there have been no published reports about this clinical entity to date. A 6-year-old female patient was referred to our practice for persistent hoarseness of voice since birth. On physical examination, her voice was hoarse and reduced in volume. She had facial features typical of Down syndrome and macroglossia. Laryngeal examination revealed the absence of the right vocal fold. She had no further evaluation or treatment.

Abstract
AbstractObjective:To define the impact of patient-related and audiovestibular parameters on the prognosis of sudden hearing loss.Methods:Eighty-three patients were included in this retrospective study. All were treated medically. We recorded the patients' demographic parameters, systemic diseases, time elapsed between onset of sudden hearing loss and initiation of treatment, tinnitus, vestibular symptoms, type of initial audiogram, pure tone averages and speech discrimination scores. For all patients, audiological measurements were performed on initial admission and at the completion of treatment on the 10th day. Results:There was no correlation between the hearing gain and recovery rate scores and patients' gender or age (p>0.05). However, a correlation was found between gender and relative hearing gain. Vertigo was not correlated with hearing gain and recovery rate scores (p<0.05). However, relative hearing gain correlated negatively with the presence of vertigo (−r=0.05, 81 degrees of freedom,p=0.043). Patients with <40 dB hearing loss on admission showed a better relative hearing gain (r=0.55, 81 degrees of freedom,p=0.03). Relative hearing gain correlated positively with better pre-treatment speech discrimination scores (r=0.82, 81 degrees of freedom,p=0.009) and negatively with poorer pre-treatment pure tone averages (−r=0.082, 81 degrees of freedom,p=0.009). There was no correlation between the scores for hearing gain, relative hearing gain and recovery rate and: systemic diseases (p>0.05); time elapsed between onset of sudden hearing loss and initiation of treatment (p>0.05); type of audiogram on initial admission (p>0.05), except for midfrequency type of audiogram; and tinnitus (p>0.05).Conclusions:The outcome of sudden hearing loss was unaffected by systemic disease, tinnitus or type of audiogram (except for midfrequency type). The following were poor prognostic factors in the outcome of sudden hearing loss: female gender, presence of vertigo, initiation of treatment more than seven days after onset of hearing loss, and >40 dB hearing loss on admission.

Abstract
Angiomatous polyps are the extremely rare variant of sinochoanal polyps that are characterised by dilated, large vascular spaces. A 27-year-old female patient presented with a three-month history of unilateral right-sided nasal obstruction and recurrent mild epistaxis. Paranasal computed tomography demonstrated a mass in the right maxillary sinus extending through the nasal cavity. It was resected with both endonasal endoscopic and Caldwell-Luc approaches. Histopathological examination identified an angiomatous nasal polyp. Follow-up of thirteen months showed no recurrence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the vaccination coverage of children living in the South-east Anatolian Project (SEAP) region; whether the vaccination coverage was similar to formal reports, other studies and other countries; and which factors influence vaccination, in order to indicate how vaccination coverage can be improved. STUDY DESIGN A descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in nine provinces of the SEAP region in order to determine public health problems and their causes. METHODS A population-based sample of 1150 houses was selected from rural and urban areas of the SEAP region and visited by the researchers. Questionnaires were applied in 2001 and 2002. RESULTS In the SEAP region, only 30% of children had received a complete set of vaccines. The vaccination coverage was 76.7% for Bacille Calmette-Guérin; 62.0% for the third doses of diphtheria, tetanus toxoid, pertussis and polio vaccine; 62.7% for measles; 44% for the third dose of hepatitis B vaccine in children aged 12-23 months; and 13.3% for the second dose of tetanus toxoid in women who gave birth in the last 5 years. In logistic regression analysis, residence type, number of siblings, birth interval, follow-up visits of midwives, and maternal level of education were found to influence whether children were completely vaccinated. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study indicate that vaccination coverage is not acceptable in the SEAP region. Efforts must focus on family planning services, education of women, follow-up visits and strengthening health facilities, especially in rural regions, to improve vaccination.

Reactive oxygen species mediate abnormal contractile response to sympathetic nerve stimulation and noradrenaline in the vas deferens of chronically diabetic rats: effects of in vivo treatment with antioxidants. Fundam Clin Pharmacol 2005; 19:73-9. Abstract
Previous studies suggest that a link exists between increased oxidative stress and diabetic neuropathy. Moreover, antioxidants may protect neurones from the degenerative effects of reactive oxygen species. In our study, we used streptozotocin (STZ)-diabetic rats in a 8-month chronic diabetes model to study the effects of in vivo treatment with stobadine (ST), a pyridoindole antioxidant, and vitamin E. STZ-diabetic rats were treated with ST (24.7 mg/kg/day), vitamin E (D,L-alpha-tocopheryl acetate, 400-500 IU/kg/day) or ST plus vitamin E through an intra-oral catheter for a 8-month period beginning 10 days after STZ injection. Blood glucose and HbA1c levels were increased in diabetic rats by about 400 and 100%, respectively. Antioxidant treatment significantly decreased haemoglobin glycosylation (P < 0.05). We also determined the effects of chronic diabetes on sympathetic neurotransmission by measuring the contractility of isolated vas deferens. Furthermore, we investigated contractions elicited by electrical field stimulation (EFS) (1-64 Hz) which were significantly decreased in diabetic rats when compared with control rats. Treatment with ST or vitamin E alone partly enhanced the amplitude of the contractions induced by EFS, but a combination of ST and vitamin E treatment showed no additional effects. Contractile response of the vas deferens to exogenous noradrenaline, was increased in diabetic rats when compared with control rats. While the addition of vitamin E alone had no effect, ST completely returned noradrenaline-induced contractions to basal levels. The tension induced by 120 mm KCl was not statistically different among the experimental groups. In normal rats, EFS-induced contractions were significantly inhibited by pyrogallol (10(-4) m), a free-radical generator. Percentage inhibition of pyrogallol on EFS (32 Hz)-induced contractions in ring sections was 48 +/- 5.8 in control, 75 +/- 5.5 in untreated-diabetic, 54 +/- 2.7 in ST-treated diabetic, and 58 +/- 4.7 in vitamin E-treated diabetic rats. Combining both ST and vitamin E treatment had the same effects as each antioxidant alone with a percent inhibition of 48 +/- 6.8. These results are consistent with the degenerative changes seen in sympathetic nerves and the abnormal function observed in chronically diabetic rats, leading to a decrease in EFS response and an increase in response to adrenergic agonists in the vas deferens. Furthermore, we demonstrated that reactive oxygen species are responsible for impaired sympathetic neurotransmission and abnormal function of diabetic vas deferens, and that a combination of antioxidants may be better for the therapy of reproductive system disabilities in male diabetics.

Abstract
In this study, we determined the effects of transcranial electrical stimulation (TCES) on the anaesthetic requirements of thiopental and the analgesic requirements of remifentanil, in rats. The experiments were performed on 120 albino male Wistar rats, which were randomly allocated to four groups (n=30). (Thiopental, Thiopental+TCES, Thiopental+Remifentanil, and Thiopental+Remifentanil+TCES). Animals were anaesthetized with thiopental, and 15 min later, remifentanil was injected to rats in the Remifentanil groups. TCES was started in the stimulated groups 20 min after thiopental administration. Rats were stimulated 5 times for this experiment. The times for recovery, herein called Cognition Recovery Time and Motion Recovery Time were measured. Cognition Recovery and Motion Recovery Times were not affected by the stimulation. Analgesia was assessed using the wet tail-flick latency (TFL). In the Thiopental group, the analgesia level returned to control values on the 35th min. In the Thiopental+Remifentanil group, the analgesia level returned to control values on the 50th min. In the Thiopental+ TCES group, the analgesia level reached the peak value on the 65th min. In the Thiopental+Remifentanil+TCES group, the analgesia level reached the peak value on the 35th min and analgesia remained high during the 90 min after cessation of the stimulation. The analgesic potency for the Thiopental+Remifentanil+TCES group was increased by 30-40% when compared with the prior TFL values, 160% when compared with the control group, and 50-75% when compared with Thiopental+TCES group on the 35th min (P<0.001). In conclusion, TCES markedly decreases the anaesthetic and analgesic requirements for thiopental and remifentanil in rats.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate contraceptive use by women of reproductive age in the Southeast Anatolian Project Region and the promotion of the use of family planning services. METHODS An optimum sample size to represent the rural and urban area of the region was determined and the sample was chosen by sampling method proportional to the size. A total of 1126 houses were visited and questions about reproductive health were asked of 1019 ever-married (currently married, widows and divorced) women. RESULTS The study showed that 48.2% of the ever-married women of reproductive age had never used any method of family planning; 37.4% were currently using a family planning method, and 14.4% had used a family planning method in the past. Of the women who were currently using a family planning method, 73.1% were using an effective method. The result of the logistic regression analysis showed that educational level, knowledge of Turkish, type of residence, and total number of living children were the main variables that affected the use of family planning methods. CONCLUSIONS Use of family planning methods in the region was not at the expected level. In order to decrease the barriers to family planning in developing countries, we must provide obtainable, acceptable, integrated health services.

Simvastatin treatment restores vasoconstriction and the inhibitory effect of LPC on endothelial relaxation via affecting oxidizing metabolism in diabetic rats. Abstract
Oxidative stress and dyslipidaemia play an important role in the development of diabetes-induced vascular complications. The aim of this study was to examine the reversal effects of simvastatin on some metabolic and oxidative parameters, and vascular functions in diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced by a single injection of streptozotocin (STZ, 45 mg/kg, i.p.). Eight weeks after STZ induction, some of the diabetic and control rats were treated with simvastatin (10 mg/kg rat/d) for 4 weeks. Plasma glucose, triglyceride and total cholesterol concentrations were significantly increased in 12-week diabetic rats. Simvastatin treatment stopped the loss of body weight, completely normalized the increase of plasma lipids and partially reduced the hyperglycaemia in diabetic rats. Increased malondialdehyde levels, catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities were normalised by simvastatin treatment in diabetic aorta. Phenylephrine (PE)-induced contractility in aorta rings was unaffected by diabetes, but was markedly decreased after simvastatin treatment in both control and diabetic rats. Reduction of endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation in diabetes was significantly ameliorated by simvastatin treatment. Incubation of aorta rings with lysophosphatidylcholine, a component of the oxidized LDL, did not significantly affect PE-induced contractions, but reduced endothelium-dependent relaxations more in untreated-diabetic rats than in other experimental groups. The endothelium-independent vasorelaxations were similar in all ring preparations. These results indicate that simvastatin treatment may ameliorate diabetes-induced abnormal vasoconstriction and endothelial dysfunction via affecting general and oxidizing metabolism, nitric oxide disability and intracellular calcium mobilisation.

Effects of simvastatin treatment on oxidant/antioxidant state and ultrastructure of diabetic rat myocardium. Gen Physiol Biophys 2003; 22:535-47. Abstract
In the present study we investigated the effects of simvastatin treatment on lipid metabolism and peroxidation, antioxidant enzyme activities and ultrastructure of the diabetic rat myocardium. Diabetes was induced by single injection of streptozotocin (45 mg/kg i.p.). Eight weeks after induction of diabetes, a subgroup of control and of diabetic rats was treated with simvastatin for 4 weeks (10 mg/kg/day, orally). Blood glucose, plasma cholesterol and triacylglycerol, as well as levels of cardiac thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were significantly increased in diabetic rats. The activities of antioxidant enzymes, catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx), were also elevated in the diabetic myocardium. Treatment with simvastatin markedly reduced serum triacylglycerol and cholesterol, and partially controlled hyperglycemia in diabetic animals. The increased activation of antioxidant enzymes and the excess of lipid peroxidation measured by TBARS were completely reversed by simvastatin treatment. Diabetic rats displayed ultrastructural ischemia-like alterations of cardiomyocytes and capillaries, which support oxidative stress-induced tissue remodelling. In the diabetic myocardium simvastatin treatment partly attenuated angiopathic and atherogenic processes, detected by electron microscopy. These results suggest that simvastatin, known as a lipid-lowering drug, may positively affect diabetes induced cardiovascular complications via reducing risks of atherosclerotic pathological processes, such as imbalance between oxidant and antioxidant state.

Food-borne botulism cases in Van region in eastern Turkey: importance of electromyography in the diagnosis. ELECTROMYOGRAPHY AND CLINICAL NEUROPHYSIOLOGY 2003; 43:373-6. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Food-borne botulism is an acute form of poisoning that results from ingestion of a toxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. Botulism toxin causes its major effect by blocking neuromuscular transmission in autonomic and motor nerve terminals. METHODS In this study, we present the features of eleven cases of food-borne botulism admitted to our hospital in 2001. All of the cases were caused by home-prepared foods; green beans. In these cases, the main symptoms and signs were generalized muscular weakness, dry mouth, dysphagia, disponea and diplopia. Electrophysiological studies were performed on four patients. RESULTS Motor conduction studies showed that compound muscle action potentials were decreased with normal latencies and conduction velocities. The needle electromyography showed signs of denervation potentials like fibrillation and positive waves in four patients. Repetitive nerve stimulation with high frequency (20 Hz) induced an increment close to 100% in the amplitudes in 2 of 4 patients. CONCLUSION Although toxin could not be detected in the patients, the electromyographic findings supported our diagnosis. We concluded that electromyography has an important role in diagnosis of botulism, especially in the condition that serologic tests are negative or cannot be performed.

Effect of positional change and inhalant anesthesia on parameters of acoustic reflectometry. Int J Pediatr Otorhinolaryngol 2003; 67:943-6. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Purpose of this study was to find out the effect of positional change and inhalant anesthesia on acoustic reflectometry (AR) parameters (reflectivity and curve angle). METHOD AR parameters were measured on 58 ears with otitis media in sitting position before anesthesia and in supine position under inhalant anesthesia, subsequently. RESULTS Under anesthesia, ears with effusion disclosed more changes in reflectivity (Chi-squared analysis, chi2-test; P<0.05) and curve angle (P>0.1) than those without effusion. Further, inhalant anesthesia caused more changes in the false negative ears (63.63%) than in those with effusion having positive test before anesthesia (12.90%) (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS From the data of this study, it could be said that reflectivity shows changes according to the amount of effusion which is in contact with the tympanic membrane under anesthesia, and that curve angle becomes more sensitive to detect effusion when anesthetic gas diffuses into the middle ear with effusion, probably due to the pushing of effusion towards the tympanic membrane.

Abstract
Untreated waste water usage in agriculture is an important health-threatening issue which could affect both workers' and the public's health. In this study we researched hepatitis E infection in 46 of 57 farmers who used untreated waste water in agriculture. We compared them with 45 persons of the same socio-economic status and age. Anti-HEV seropositivity was 34.8% in the workers and 4.4% in the control group. We suggest that this type of irrigation is an important potential risk for hepatitis E infection.

Abstract
This study was performed to describe the prevalence rates of allergic diseases among children in southeast Anatolia. A questionnaire survey of children six to 15 years old was conducted using a modified version of the Turkish translated ISAAC protocol, with additional questions concerning sociodemographic and environmental characteristics of children that could be potential risk factors for allergic disorders. Questionnaires were distributed to parents of all children aged below 11 years and to children themselves aged over 11 for completion. A total of 3,040 children returned the questionnaires. The lifetime prevalence rates of asthma, wheezing, allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis were 14.1%, 22.4%, 12.9%, and 7.8%, respectively. The prevalence of wheezing, rhinitis and chronic rash in the last 12 months were 14.7%, 39.9%, and 11.8%, respectively. The prevalence rates of symptoms and diagnoses of allergic disorders were similar in boys and girls. Passive smoking, pet ownership, number of household and socioeconomic status were not significant risk factors for allergic diseases. Family history of atopy was the most prominent risk factor for all types of allergic diseases, high prevalence rates of asthma, rhinitis and eczema exist among schoolchildren in southeast Anatolia.
