Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the ameliorating effect of methanolic extract of green walnut husk (GWH) in hypercholesterolemic rats. A total of thirty male Albino Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus domestica) were divided randomly into six equal groups. Group 1, negative control, fed on a standard rat diet whereas groups 2–6, hypercholesterolemic rats, fed a high-fat diet (1% cholesterol in a standard diet). Group 2, positive control, was left untreated, whereas the groups 3–5 treated orally with methanolic extract of GWH at 200, 400, and 800 mg/kg/day BW, respectively. Group 6, treatment control, received atorvastatin intraperitoneally at a dosage rate of 0.8 mg/kg/day. The treatment lasted for 84 days. Lipid profiles, biomarkers for liver and kidney functions, some hematological parameters, and liver histopathological assessment were performed. No significant variation was observed on lipid profile values after 42 days of GWH intake; while after 84 days, there was significant reduction (P<0.05) in cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides and significant increase (P<0.05) in HDL. On day 42, the GWH intake revealed no ameliorating effect on ALT, AST, ALP, serum creatinine, and blood urea nitrogen (BUN); while on day 84, the GWH at 400 and 800 mg/kg BW reduced liver injury enzymes and serum creatinine levels but not the BUN. The GWH showed no significant effect on RBC, HGH, HCV, MCH, and MCHC counts; however, the WBCs count of all experimental groups showed significant (P<0.05) increase when compared to negative control. In comparison with other experimental groups, the 800 mg/kg GWH group and the treatment control group exhibited significant decrease (P<0.05) in HCT. The histopathological findings of the liver showed that the 800 mg/kg BW dosage rate of GWH was efficient in ameliorating the adverse tissue changes noticed in the positive control and other experimental groups. It can be inferred that GWH at dosage rate 200, 400, and 800 mg/kg BW have a potential antidyslipidemic effect in dose and period dependent manner. Further investigation to identify the safety of GWH for long standing using against hyperlipidemic patients is required.

Abstract
PURPOSE This in vitro study was undertaken to investigate the antimicrobial effect of distinctive oral mouth washes after the addition of zein-coated (Magnesium oxide) MgO nanoparticles on exemplary of some oral microorganisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three hundred and twelve samples were used in this study. A set of five concentrations of MgO nanoparticles with zein and without zein-coating were incorporated into three oral mouth washes: Listerine zero, Listerine total control and Oral B in the mass percentages of 0.3%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, 5% and 10%, in addition to controls with no MgO nanoparticles. The antimicrobial effect of three mouth washes with variable concentrations of MgO was tested against the following organisms: Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans using the disc diffusion test (DDT) and direct contact test (DCT). Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA statistical test. RESULTS The tested mouthwashes with zein-coated MgO nanoparticles showed significant differences of antimicrobial activity on S. mutans, S. aureus, E. faecalis, and C. albicans in the disc diffusion test. While in the DCT, all tested mouthwashes with MgO nanoparticles with and without zein coating showed antimicrobial activity on all tested microorganisms. CONCLUSION Zein-coated MgO nanoparticles may be considered as a potential antimicrobial agent when added to oral mouthwashes. Future analysis, including in vivo studies, is required in order to incorporate zein/MgO nanoparticles into oral mouthwashes that may improve its antibacterial property.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES 45S5 Bioglass is a bioactive glass capable of releasing ions that can interact with dental hard tissues. The current study aimed at examining the effectiveness of 45S5 Bioglass in remineralizing enamel white spot lesion (WSL) as well as its effect on the bond strength of orthodontic brackets bonded to demineralized enamel. MATERIALS AND METHODS WSLs were induced in the buccal surfaces of 135 human extracted teeth by storage in acid solution pH 4.5 for four days. The specimens were then equally divided into three groups; Demineralized group, Bioglass group (BG), and control group (intact enamel). The groups were chemically analyzed using (FTIR/ATR) Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy/attenuated total reflectance, (XRD) X-ray diffraction, and (SEM/EDS) scanning electron microscope equipped with electron-dispersive-spectroscopy. Moreover, 10 specimens from each group were tested using Transverse Micro Radiography (TMR) technique, and 15 specimens from each group were bonded with metal orthodontic brackets and tested for shear bond strength test (SBS). The data were analyzed statistically using One way ANOVA p < 0.05. RESULTS TMR study showed that bioglass group samples recorded lesion depth of 70.19 ± 29.21 μm and Δ Z (mineral loss) 732.15 ± 210.16 vol% μm which was significantly lower than the demineralized specimens having lesion depth of 115.75 ± 19.98 μm and Δ Z (mineral loss) 3472.69 ± 738.38 vol%μm, moreover, bioglass specimens recorded 14.15 ± 2.35 Mpa which was significantly higher than demineralized specimens 6.82+1.83 Mpa but less than the control specimens 20.5 + 6.1 MPa (p < 0.05). FTIR/ATR, XRD, and SEM/EDS tests showed that bioglass paste formed a layer of brushite crystals onto the treated enamel surface. CONCLUSION 45S5 bioglass paste may serve as an effective remineralizing agent for demineralized enamel.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate the effect of surface treatments on the push-out bond strength of Biodentine (BD) and white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA) to fiber posts. METHODS Two brands of fiber posts were used: Reblida post; RP and RelyX post; RX. Each type of post (n = 80/group) was divided into four groups (n = 20/group) and exposed to surface treatment as follows: Control (no treatment), sandblasting (SB), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and TiF4 4 wt/v%. Each group was further subdivided into two subgroups (n = 10/subgroup) based on the type of CSCs used as follows: Subgroup A: BD and Subgroup B: WMTA. Push-out bond strength of BD and WMTA to glass fiber posts was assessed. Data were statistically analyzed using three-way ANOVA and Tukey's test. A Weibull analysis was performed on the push-out bond strength data. RESULTS BD showed higher bond strength than WMTA (P < 0.001). The push-out bond strength for posts treated with TiF4 4 wt/v% showed greater bond strength than the other surface treatments (P < 0.05). The BD/RP-TiF4 4 wt/v% showed the greater characteristic bond strength (σ0) (15.93) compared with the other groups. Surface treatments modified the surface topography of glass fiber posts. CONCLUSIONS The BD/RP-TiF4 4 wt/v% showed greater bond strength compared with the other groups. The TiF4 4 wt/v% surface treatment enhanced the bond strength of BD and WMTA to glass fiber posts than the other treatments. Surface treatment of fiber post with TiF4 4 wt/v% could be used to improve the bond strength with calcium silicate-based cements.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare the amount of en-masse retraction with or without piezocision corticotomy, to assess the type of tooth movement, to evaluate root integrity after retraction, and to record reported pain levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS This randomized, controlled clinical trial included 26 orthodontic patients requiring premolar extraction. The patients were divided into two groups: (1) an extraction with piezocision corticotomy group (PCG) and (2) an extraction-only group, which served as the control group (CG). Cone-beam computed tomography images were acquired before and 4 months after the initiation of en-masse retraction utilizing miniscrews. The following variables were assessed: the amount of en-masse retraction, incisor inclination, incisor and canine root resorption, and patient-reported pain. RESULTS Twelve and 11 participants completed the entire study in the PCG and CG, respectively. The amount of en-masse retraction was significantly greater in the PCG compared to the CG (mean = 4.8 ± 0.57 mm vs 2.4 ± 0.33 mm, respectively [P < .001]). There was also significantly less tipping and root resorption of incisors in the PCG (P < .05). The reported pain was significantly higher on the first day in the PCG compared to the CG (P < .001); however, it became similar between the groups after 24 hours. CONCLUSIONS Piezocision corticotomy enhanced the amount of en-masse retraction two times more with less root resorption. However, future studies are required to assess the long-term effects of this technique.

Abstract
Background Orthodontic treatment may result in undesirable side effects, such as root resorption and a decrease in the size of the pulp tissue which could be associated with the duration of the orthodontic treatment. Piezocision-assisted tooth movement was introduced as a minimally invasive surgical procedure to shorten orthodontic treatment time. This prospective randomized clinical trial was aimed to compare the pulp volume changes of maxillary anterior teeth after en-masse retraction with or without piezocision-assisted orthodontics. Methods Patients who required orthodontic treatment with bilateral maxillary first premolar extractions and en-masse retraction were recruited. Patients were randomly divided into extraction with piezocision, or only extraction, serving as controls. Pulp volume and root length changes of the maxillary six anterior teeth were measured and compared between the two groups using a 3-Dimensional analytical software. Paired and independent sample t-tests were used to compare within and between groups. Bivariate correlation was done between the mean change in pulp volume and its corresponding root length. The significance level was set at α = 0.05. Results A total of 23 patients were included, 12 in the piezocision, and 11 in the control group. At the end of the en-masse retraction phase, (mean = 122.74 ± 3.06 days) pulp volume was significantly decreased in all six anterior teeth in both groups (P < 0.01). The decrease in pulp volume was not statistically different between both groups, (P > 0.05). There was a statistically significant but moderate correlation only between the pulp volume change of the right canine and its root length, r = 0.44, P = 0.034. Conclusions The effect of piezocision-assisted orthodontic tooth movement on the pulp volume was comparable to the conventional orthodontic treatment. The degree of change in pulp volume does not appear to be related to the amount of root resorption. Trial registration NCT03180151. Abstract
BACKGROUND Malocclusion is one of the most common oral health problems that affects quality of life. It is important to understand how different types of malocclusion can affect the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Vertical discrepancy in occlusion is highly prevalent, yet there are no studies evaluating its impact on OHRQoL in the Saudi population. Therefore, in this study, we aim to investigate the impact of vertical discrepancy in occlusion on patients' OHRQoL. PATIENT AND METHODS A cross-sectional evaluation of 109 patients with open and deep bites who attended the orthodontics screening clinic at King Abdulaziz University Dental Hospital was carried out. The OHRQoL of each participant was assessed using the shortened, Arabic-version of the oral health impact profile-14 questionnaire. Chi-squared and Fisher's exact tests were used for analysis. RESULTS The findings indicated a statistically significant association between anterior vertical discrepancy in occlusion and embarrassment (p = 0.001), followed by being self-conscious about their appearance, discomfort while eating (p = 0.009), generalized mouth aching (p = 0.012), and speech problems (p = 0.049). This Impact was significantly higher in participants with open bites. Regarding gender variables, female patients were found to be significantly more embarrassed (p = 0.005), while male patients were more self-conscious (p = 0.018). CONCLUSION Vertical discrepancy in occlusion has a negative impact on OHRQoL and its domains in both genders. The negative impact is highlighted in the psychological disability, psychological discomfort, physical pain, and functional limitation domains.

Abstract
Museum contents are vulnerable to bad ambience conditions and human vandalization. Preserving the contents of museums is a duty towards humanity. In this paper, we develop an Internet of Things (IoT)-based system for museum monitoring and control. The developed system does not only autonomously set the museum ambience to levels that preserve the health of the artifacts and provide alarms upon intended or unintended vandalization attempts, but also allows for remote ambience control through authorized Internet-enabled devices. A key differentiating aspect of the proposed system is the use of always-on and power-hungry sensors for comprehensive and precise museum monitoring, while being powered by harvesting the Radio Frequency (RF) energy freely available within the museum. This contrasts with technologies proposed in the literature, which use RF energy harvesting to power simple IoT sensing devices. We use rectenna arrays that collect RF energy and convert it to electric power to prolong the lifetime of the sensor nodes. Another important feature of the proposed system is the use of deep learning to find daily trends in the collected environment data. Accordingly, the museum ambience is further optimized, and the system becomes more resilient to faults in the sensed data.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study is to assess the impact of dental visits on oral health awareness among the Saudi population. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Saudi Arabia. An online self-administered questionnaire was distributed from January 2011 to June 2013. The questionnaire consisted of 21 multiple choice questions which was categorized into four: demographic data, dental care status, oral hygiene behavior, and oral health knowledge (OHK). Responses to the questions in the OHK category were grouped and scored according to their percentage of correct answers: 1 = very poor (0 to <25% correct), 2 = poor (25% to <50% correct), 3 = acceptable (50 to <75% correct), and 4 = good (75-100% correct). The sample was divided based on dental visit behavior into poor, average, and good dental visitors. Descriptive statistics, group comparisons, correlations, and linear regressions were conducted using SPSS (V16.0). A significance was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS A total of 845 participants were included: 73.4% were females, 85.1% were older than 19 years, 76.9% had a college-level education, and 75.3% were from western Saudi Arabia. A total of 14.1% were poor dental visitors, 67.5% were average dental visitors, and 18.5% were good dental visitors. The good dental visitor group showed significantly better results than the other two groups in terms of dental services received, brushing habits, interdental cleansing habits, use of miswak, and OHK (p < 0.05). The best predictors with significant but weak effects on dental visit habits were brushing habits, interdental cleansing habits, use of miswak, and OHK (F(8,836) = 7.212, R2 = 0.065, p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION Dental visits were significantly correlated with OHK. However, the impact of dental visits on oral health awareness was found to be weak. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Well-designed preventive and educational dental visit programs need to be widely implemented as part of the governmental oral health plans.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the effect of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) application on rat temporomandibular joints (TMJs) with early-stage of osteoarthritis-like conditions induced by mechanical overloading. Fifteen-week-old male Wistar rats were divided into two experimental groups and a control group (n = 10 each). Both TMJs of all rats in one experimental group were subjected to mechanical overloading for 5 d, and those in the other experimental group were exposed to LIPUS for 20 min/d after overloading. Condyles were assessed using micro-computed tomography, histology and histomorphometry. LIPUS treatment attenuated cartilage degeneration, decreased the number of osteoclastic cells and restored the expression of aggrecan after an initial decrease induced by mechanical overloading. These results indicate that LIPUS may have a protective effect on the early progression of TMJ osteoarthritis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effectiveness of pre-surgical nasoalveolar molding (PNAM) in patients with unilateral cleft lip nasal deformities. Methods: This was a retrospective study involving 29 patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate defects, of whom 13 were treated with palatal devices with nasal stents (PNAM group) and 16 were treated with palatal devices without nasal stents or surgical tapes (control group). Submental oblique photographs and orthodontic models were longitudinally obtained at the initial visit (T1) and immediately before (T2) and after cheiloplasty (T3). Asymmetry of the external nose, degree of columellar shifting, nasal tip/ala nose ratio, nasal base angle, interalveolar gap, and the sagittal difference in the alveolar gap were measured. The study was conducted in the Orthodontic Clinic at Tokushima University Hospital, Tokushima, Japan between 1997 and 2012. Results: At T1, there were no significant intergroup differences in the first 4 asymmetry parameters. At T2, the PNAM group showed a significant improvement in all values compared to the control group. At T3, the PNAM group showed significant improvement in nasal asymmetry and columellar shifting. Model analysis showed significantly greater changes in the inter-alveolar gap and the sagittal difference of the alveolar cleft gap from T1 to T2 in the PNAM group. Conclusion: The use of PNAM is indispensable for pre-surgical orthodontic treatment at the early postnatal age.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) involves many aspects such as chewing ability, sleeping, social interactions, self-esteem, and satisfaction with life and oral health. The increasing research interest in OHRQoL began only after the shortcomings of previous approaches of treating symptoms only and neglecting the patient's self-perception were revealed. PATIENTS AND METHODS The current study design is a cross-sectional study of patients who attended King Abdulaziz University Dental Hospital (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) and King Saud University Dental Hospital (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia). After obtaining their verbal consent, young adult and adult patients (mean age 25.19±7.29 years old) with anterior spacing or crowding were recruited to participate in the study. They filled the Arabic short version of the oral-health impact profile-14 questionnaire after a clinical evaluation of the severity of their spacing or crowding. Parameters of spacing/crowding severity assessment were as follows: <4, mild; 4-8, moderate; and >8, severe. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test in SPSS statistical package. The level of significance was set to <0.05. RESULTS The sample size of this study was 308 subjects. Findings indicated a statistically significant (p=0.001) association between anterior spacing malocclusion (ASM) with Q5 "self-consciousness", since 64.2% of patients with ASM reported being self-conscious. Results indicated a statistically significant association between educational level with anterior crowding malocclusion (ACM; p=0.02) and ASM (p=0.01) with Q3 "painful aching". Moreover, findings indicated a statistically significant association (p=0.04) between income and ACM with Q5 "self-consciousness". On the other hand, results showed no significant association between gender with either ACM or ASM. CONCLUSION This study sheds light on how anterior malocclusion (crowding or spacing) impacts OHRQoL negatively, especially heightening self-consciousness about their appearance. These effects should be addressed by the orthodontist during the course of treatment.

Abstract
MgO nanoparticles have been recently discovered as an antibacterial, however, they limited by property degradation due to agglomeration. The addition of a coating agent, such as a zein polymer, is effective in preventing agglomeration without affecting nanosized properties. The aim of this study was to assess the antimicrobial property of MgO nanoparticles when coated with a zein polymer against several oral bacteria and fungi. This was done by utilizing various assessment techniques. The ultimate aim is to use these nanoparticles in dental preparations. The antimicrobial activity of zein-coated MgO nanoparticles at different concentrations of 0.5, 1 and 2% were tested against four different microorganisms: Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans and Enterococcus faecalis (gram positive bacteria), and Candida albicans (as oral fungus). Two different techniques were utilized: the Kirby-Bauer test, and a modified direct contact test. The results indicated that the antibacterial effect of 1% or 2% zein-coated MgO nanowires were statistically significant (p<0.05) against the four organisms studied: S. mutans, S. aureus, E. faecalis and C. albicans. Zein-coated MgO nanoparticles are a new human friendly and potent antimicrobial agent that can be incorporated in the formulation of a variety of new dental materials and products that should provide improvements in dental care and oral health.

Abstract
The treatment of severe skeletal anterior open bite is extremely difficult in adults, and orthognathic surgery is generally selected for its treatment. We report the case of an 18-year-old adult patient with skeletal anterior open bite and temporomandibular disorders who was successfully treated using temporary anchorage devices. She had an open bite of −2.0 mm and an increased facial height. Miniplates were implanted in both the maxilla and mandible, and molar intrusion resulted in counterclockwise rotation of the mandible over a period of 12 months. After active treatment, her upper and lower first molars were intruded by approximately 2 mm and her overbite became +2.5 mm. Her retrognathic profile improved with counterclockwise rotation of the mandible. Orthodontic treatment aided with skeletal anchorage is beneficial for intrusion of bimaxillary molars in patients with anterior open bite.

Abstract
Piezocision (corticotomy) is a minimally invasive approach that involves micro-incisions, piezoelectric incisions, and selective tunnelling for soft or hard tissue grafting. Piezocision has many uses in orthodontics, but its uses in cross-bite cases are limited. This case report illustrates the outcomes of a 19-year-old female patient with unilateral cross-bite that was treated with a minimally invasive piezocision with bone grafting in the affected side. In addition, she also had a functional shift, severe crowding, and mid-line shift. Therefore, the shift was eliminated using a quad helix expansion, she was treated with a fixed appliance, and a bimaxillary extraction of the first premolars was performed. The patient followed-up at 18 months, and the occlusion was stable with a pleasant profile. Piezocision can be used as an adjunct to the orthodontic treatment of adults to facilitate the treatment of complicated cases.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on dentoalveolar structures during application of force to a cultured mandible slice taken from an ovariectomized rat model of osteoporosis. Rats were divided based on whether they had ovariectomy and/or LIPUS application into four groups: control osteoporosis group, control normal group, ultrasound-treated osteoporosis group and ultrasound-treated normal group. The mandibles were dissected, sliced and cultured before application of a 0.5-N force. Tissue specimens from five rats per group received LIPUS; the remaining rats served as untreated controls. Tissue sections were evaluated histologically and histomorphometrically. Osteoporosis significantly affected the alveolar bone without any effect on the dentin-pulp complex. LIPUS enhanced osteoporotic alveolar bone remodeling and increased cementum and predentin thickness. Furthermore, LIPUS application significantly increased odontoblast and periodontal ligament cell counts (p < 0.05) in both groups. Therefore, LIPUS enhances alveolar bone remolding and increases cementum and predentin formation in osteoporotic rat mandible slice organ cultures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the effects of nicotine on orthodontic tooth movement and accompanying histological and immunohistochemical changes in rats. METHODS An experimental study conducted at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia between 2013 and 2014. Thirty-two rats randomly divided into 4 groups. Three were experimental, received daily nicotine injections: group A: 0.37 mg/kg, group B: 0.57 mg/kg, and group C: 0.93 mg/kg. The control group (group D) received a daily injection of 0.5 mL saline. All rats were subjected to 30 g of orthodontic force on the maxillary left first molars and incisors using a nickel-titanium closed-coil spring. The distance between the 2 teeth was assessed before and after 14 days of force application. Histological, immunohistochemical, and histomorphometric assessments were performed on sections from groups C and D. RESULTS Groups C (p less than 0.001) and D (p less than 0.001) showed the significantly greatest and least amounts of tooth movement . The results were statistically dose-dependent. Unbalanced resorption-apposition bone remodeling patterns and increased osteoclast cell distribution were observed in the nicotine group with significantly smaller percentages of bone surface areas mesially and distally (p less than 0.05). Immunohistochemical stains showed low alkaline phosphatase activity and intense tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase activity in the nicotine group. CONCLUSIONS Nicotine accelerated orthodontic tooth movement with unbalanced bone resorption and apposition patterns around the moving teeth.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of applying 0.50% chlorhexidine (CHX) gel using the dental drug delivery system (3DS) on salivary Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and on the surface topography of metal and ceramic orthodontic brackets. The study involved 20 orthodontic patients with high levels of salivary S. mutans. The patients were treated with professional mechanical tooth cleaning followed by application of 0.50% CHX using individual trays (3DS). Salivary S. mutans levels were repeatedly measured 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks post-treatment. In vitro study utilized forty ceramic and metallic brackets that were immersed in 0.50% CHX gel for 10 min, whereas another untreated forty brackets served as controls. The frictional resistances of stainless steel wires to the brackets before and after CHX treatment were recorded using a universal testing machine. Scanning electron microscopy was used to compare changes in the surface topography of brackets. Statistical analyses were used to determine the effect of CHX on bacterial count and to evaluate the effect of CHX on frictional resistance. According to the results of this study, S. mutans levels were reduced significantly (P < 0.05). There were no significant changes in the frictional resistance and surface topography of brackets before or after application of CHX. (J Oral Sci 58, 35-42, 2016).

Abstract
Objectives: To investigate the effect of using osteogenic induced gingival fibroblasts (OIGFs) and low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on root resorption lacunae volume and cementum thickness in beagle dogs that received orthodontic tooth movement. Materials and Methods: Seven beagle dogs were used, from which gingival cells (GCs) were obtained and were induced osteogenically to produce OIGFs. Each third and fourth premolar was randomly assigned to one of the five groups, namely, LIPUS, OIGFs, bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2), OIGFs + LIPUS, and control. All groups received 4 weeks of bodily tooth movement, then LIPUS-treated groups received LIPUS for 20 min/day for 4 weeks, and OIGFs groups received an injection of OIGFs near the root apex. Microcomputed tomography analysis was used to calculate root resorption lacunae volume and histomorphometric analysis was performed to measure the cementum thickness of each root at 3 root levels on compression and tension sides. Results: There was no significant difference in resorption volume between the treatment groups. OIGFs + LIPUS increased cementum thickness (P > 0.05) in third premolars near the apex, and LIPUS increased cementum thickness (P > 0.05) in fourth premolars near the apex. Furthermore, BMP2 increased cementum thickness at the coronal third at the compression side. Conclusion: OIGFs, LIPUS, and BMP-2 can be potential treatments for orthodontically induced root resorption, however, improvements in experimental design and treatment parameters are required to further investigate these repair modalities.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE Wearing orthodontic appliances may negatively affect a patient's oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) physiologically, psychologically, and socially. Few studies have assessed the effect of palatal expanders on OHRQoL. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of palatal expanders on OHRQoL and to compare it with that of fixed orthodontic appliances. MATERIALS AND METHODS All adolescent and adult orthodontic patients who were undergoing treatment with fixed appliances or palatal expanders between July 2015 and January 2016 in King Abdulaziz University Orthodontc Dental Clinics, were recruited (n=399). The OHRQoL of each participant was assessed using the shortened Arabic version of the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 questionnaire. OHRQoL was compared between users of fixed appliances and users of palatal expanders; it was also compared after stratifying the patients by gender. Chi-squared and Fisher's exact tests were used, as indicated. RESULTS Palatal expanders had significantly greater negative effects on chewing ability (P≤0.01) and pronunciation (P=0.048). However, fixed orthodontic appliances had significantly greater negative impacts on mouth aching (P=0.003), difficulty in relaxing (P=0.01), irritability (P=0.001), and embarrassment (P≤0.01). CONCLUSION Palatal expanders had a significantly greater negative impact on some aspects of OHRQoL when compared with fixed orthodontic appliances in adolescents and young adults.

Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate the accuracy of using routine 2-dimensional (2D) radiographs (panoramic and periapical) when evaluating the position of orthodontic temporary anchorage devices (mini-implants) in the maxilla, and to compare the results to 3-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at King Abdulaziz University, Faculty of Dentistry, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from February 2014 to January 2015. Panoramic and periapical radiographs were used to examine the position of mini-implants in relation to the adjacent roots. Rating of mini-implants position was performed by 82 dentists from different specialties, using 2 D images according to the following criteria: 1) away from the root; 2) mini-implant tip appears touching the lamina dura; and 3) mini-implant overlays the lamina dura. The results were compared with CBCT findings. Results: There was no difference between dentists from different specialties when rating the position of the mini-implants (Cronbach’s alpha=0.956). The accuracy of the periapical images was 45.1%, while the panoramic images 33.6%. However, both panoramic and periapical radiographs were significantly inaccurate when assessing the mini-implant position when compared with the CBCT findings (p=0.0001). Conclusion: Three-dimensional CBCT technology allows better visualization of mini-implant placement. The use of CBCT when assessing the position of mini-implants is recommended.

Abstract
The goal of this study was to assess the effect of the intermittent combination of an antiresorptive agent (calcitonin) and an anabolic agent (vitamin D3) on treating the detrimental effects of Type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) on mandibular bone formation and growth. Forty 3-week-old male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: the control group (normal rats), the control C+D group (normal rats injected with calcitonin and vitamin D3), the diabetic C+D group (diabetic rats injected with calcitonin and vitamin D3) and the diabetic group (uncontrolled diabetic rats). An experimental DM condition was induced in the male Wistar rats in the diabetic and diabetic C+D groups using a single dose of 60 mg·kg−1 body weight of streptozotocin. Calcitonin and vitamin D3 were simultaneously injected in the rats of the control C+D and diabetic C+D groups. All rats were killed after 4 weeks, and the right mandibles were evaluated by micro-computed tomography and histomorphometric analysis. Diabetic rats showed a significant deterioration in bone quality and bone formation (diabetic group). By contrast, with the injection of calcitonin and vitamin D3, both bone parameters and bone formation significantly improved (diabetic C+D group) (P < 0.05). These findings suggest that these two hormones might potentially improve various bone properties.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) and orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIRR) in ovariectomized osteoporotic rats. Forty-eight 28-d-old female Wistar rats were divided into ovariectomized and intact groups. In both groups, animals were left untreated; treated with 50 g mesially directed orthodontic force on the maxillary first molars using nickel-titanium closed-coil springs for 28 d; or treated with the same orthodontic protocol along with a 20-min LIPUS application on alternate days for 28 d. Extent of OTM and amount of OIRR of mesial roots were measured on three-dimensionally reconstructed micro-computed tomography images. Ovariectomy increased OIRR (p < 0.05). LIPUS reduced root volumetric loss regardless of ovariectomy status (p < 0.05); only ovariectomized animals had decreased OTM (p < 0.05). LIPUS normalizes OTM and attenuates OIRR in ovariectomized osteoporotic rats. It may therefore be beneficial in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effect of 2% CHX and 2% CHX-methacrylate compared to the resin-dentin bonds created by a two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive system after 24h, 6min and 12min. METHODS Microtensile bond strengths and interfacial nanoleakage within resin-dentin interfaces created by Adper Single Bond 2, with or without CHX or CHX-methacrylate pre-treatment for 30s on acid-etched dentin surfaces, were evaluated after 24h, 6min and 12min of storage in distilled water at 37°C. RESULTS Twelve months of storage resulted in a significant decrease in microtensile bond strength in the control group, and significant increases in silver nanoleakage. In contrast, Single Bond 2+CHX, and to a greater extent CHX-methacrylate, significantly reduced the rate of deterioration of resin-dentin interfaces over the 12min water storage period, in terms of bond strength. CONCLUSIONS Similar to Single Bond 2+CHX, Single Bond+CHX-methacrylates reduced the degradation of resin-bonded interfaces over a 12 month storage period. Thus it can be concluded that Single Bond 2+CHX-methacrylate may be important to improve durability of bonded interfaces and therefore, prolong the life span of adhesive restorations. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Although CHX primers have been shown to enhance the durability of etch-and-rinse adhesives, that protection is lost after 2h. The use of CHX-methacrylate should last much longer since it may copolymerize with adhesive monomers, unlike CHX.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to develop and examine a new non-invasive injectable graft for the repair of alveolar bone clefts using recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) encapsulated within injectable liposomal in situ gel (LIG). METHOD Different liposomal formulations loaded with rhBMP-2 were prepared, and the effects of the preparation methods and lipid content on the efficiency of rhBMP-2 encapsulation within the liposomes were studied. For the preparation of in situ gel, deacetylated gellan gum (DGG) was used, and the in vitro gelation characteristics of the gel were evaluated. In vivo pharmacokinetics and histology were also assessed. Critical size alveolar defects were surgically created in the maxillae of 30 New Zealand rabbits and treated with different injectable formulae, including rhBMP-2 liposomes and in situ gel (rhBMP-2-LIG). RESULTS The results indicated that the prepared rhBMP-2-LIG prolonged the release and residence time of BMP-2 within rabbits for more than 7 days. Histomorphometric assessment showed 67% trabecular bone filling of the defects treated using this novel formula. CONCLUSION BMP-2-LIG is a promising delivery device for the repair of alveolar bone defects associated with cleft deformities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To systematically review the literature to assess the quality of evidence related to corticotomy-assisted orthodontic treatment (CAOT) as adjunctive treatment in orthodontics. METHODS The study was conducted in the Faculty of Dentistry, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia between 2013 and 2014. Various electronic databases were searched and abstracts were retrieved. Defined inclusion criteria were then applied to the obtained original articles for further evaluation by 2 examiners independently. The criteria of selection included human, or animal studies, which assessed some aspects of CAOT and/or the biological principles behind it. Case reports and series were excluded. The quality of the studies was evaluated by the methodological score for clinical trials developed. RESULTS Fourteen articles were retrieved initially, but only 12 articles were finally selected for the study. The CAOT was found to accelerate tooth movement by 2-2.5 folds when compared with conventional orthodontic tooth movement. The CAOT was found safe on periodontal health and exhibits no or little risk of root resorption. A localized turnover of alveolar spongiosa and the absence of a hyalinized zone was the acceptable biological explanation of CAOT. There is no evidence to support that CAOT enhances the movement of ankylosed teeth, closing old extraction sites, post-orthodontic stability, or transverse expansion. CONCLUSIONS Corticotomy-assisted orthodontic treatment should be considered with caution. Long term randomized clinical trials are still needed.

OBJECTIVES To evaluate the cephalometric features of subjects with incompetent lips, and to find the most discriminant variables for lip incompetence among the following: dental protrusion and proclination, antero-posterior and vertical skeletal relationships, and lip dimensions. METHODS This retrospective study was conducted at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, between 2011 and 2012. Cephalograms of 84 subjects (22 males and 62 females, aged 20.18+/-3.65 years) diagnosed as having incompetent lips were collected (incompetent group [IG]) and compared with the control group (CG), matching in age and gender distribution. Thirty-five measurements were compared between the 2 groups using independent t-test. Stepwise discriminant analysis of lip incompetence was performed. RESULTS Compared to the CG, subjects in the IG had thinner upper lips, shorter upper and lower lips, more retrognathic facial types, greater angle between nasion-point A and nasion-point B, shorter anterior and posterior cranial bases, shorter palatal length, shorter mandibular body length, shorter ramal length, steeper mandibular plane, less prominent chin, bimaxillary dental protrusion, and smaller inter-incisal angle. The significant discriminant variables, in order, were inter-incisor angle, inclination of upper incisors, ramal height, anterior cranial base, palatal plane to Frankfort horizontal plane angle, lower and then upper anterior dental height, upper lip thickness, and length. CONCLUSIONS The presence of incompetent lips can be attributed to more than one factor and not only bimaxillary protrusion. This should be considered during the treatment planning of such problem.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of a light-emitting diode (LED) and/or low-level laser (LLL) with or without the use of anterior bite jumping appliances (also known as functional appliances [FAs]) on mandibular growth in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-six 8-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 200 g were obtained from Charles River Canada (St. Constant, QC, Canada) and were divided into six groups of six animals each. Groups were as follows: group 1: LLL; group 2: LLL + FA; group 3: LED; group 4: LED + FA; group 5: FA; and group 6: control (no treatment). Mandibular growth was evaluated by histomorphometric and micro computed tomographic (microCT) analyses. RESULTS The LED and LED + FA groups showed an increase in all condylar tissue parameters compared with other groups. CONCLUSION The LED-treated groups showed more mandibular growth stimulation compared with the laser groups.

Abstract
In the present report, two techniques of space closure; two-step anterior teeth retraction (TSR) and en masse retraction (ER) were used in two adult patients who had bimaxillary protrusion and were treated with four premolar extractions and fixed orthodontic appliance therapy. Both patients had a Class I dental malocclusion and the same chief complaint, which is protrusive lips. Anterior teeth were retracted by two-step retraction; canine sliding followed by retraction of incisors with T-loop archwire in the first patient and by en masse retraction using Beta titanium alloy T-loop archwire in the second case. At the end of treatment, good balance and harmony of lips was achieved with maintenance of Class I relationships. The outcome of treatment was similar in the two patients with similar anchorage control. ER can be an acceptable alternative to the TSR during space closure since it is esthetically more acceptable. However, it requires accurate bending and positioning of the T-loop.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The objective was to assess the effects of different orthodontic treatment needs on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of Saudi children seeking orthodontic treatment as perceived by the children and their parents. METHODS A cross-sectional evaluation of orthodontic patients and their attending parents was conducted to assess the relationship between orthodontic treatment needs and the OHRQoL. The study sample comprised 120 young orthodontic patients (36 boys, 84 girls; age range, 12-15 years). Each participant was assessed for orthodontic treatment needs and OHRQoL using the Dental Health Component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Needs and the Michigan Oral Health-related Quality of Life Scales-Version C (child) and Version PG (parent/guardian), respectively. RESULTS Orthodontic treatment needs significantly affected mouth aching, chewing and biting, going to school, and playing. Higher income and borderline index of orthodontic treatment needs are significantly related to oral health impact on quality of life perceived by the child, while younger age and high school education are related to oral health impact on quality of life as perceived by the parent/guardians. CONCLUSION These findings emphasize the impact of malocclusion on OHRQoL in children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the cephalometric characteristics of mandibles of Saudi patients having impacted third molars and to compare them to those of patients having normally erupted third molars. MATERIAL AND METHODS One hundred and twenty-one Saudi adult subjects (59 females and 62 males; age: 20-40 years) were divided into two groups based on the status of the mandibular third molars: (1) impaction group and (2) normal group. Means and standard deviations of 21 cephalometric measurements related to mandibular geometry were measured and compared between the two groups using the unpaired t-test. Males and females in the impaction group were also compared with their equivalent subgroups in the normal group using the unpaired t-test. RESULTS Anteroposteriorly, space distal to second molar, ramal width and mandibular body length were significantly less in the impaction group than in the control group. In addition, posterior teeth were more upright in the impaction group. Vertically, posterior alveolar height was significantly less in the impaction group. The Y-axis was significantly increased in the impaction group. The significance of these measurements was variable between males and females. CONCLUSIONS Third-molar impactions in the Saudis living in the Western region of Saudi Arabia were more likely to occur when inadequate retromolar space is present. This can be attributed to certain mandibular skeletal and dental features, among which the increased width of mandibular ramus and backward inclination of posterior teeth seem to be the most influencing factors in both sexes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe and analyze the cephalometric dento-skeletal characteristics associated with Angle's Class II, division 1 malocclusion in Saudi population living in the western region. MATERIALS AND METHODS The material examined included 149 lateral head radiographs comprising two series: (1) 85 films of children with Class II, division 1 malocclusion and (2) 62 films of children with "normal" occlusion. Age range of the representing children was 10-13 years. RESULTS In Class II division 1 subjects, the maxilla was prognathic in relation to anterior cranial base. The mandible was normally positioned in relation to anterior cranial base. Upper incisors were proclined and lower incisors were normally positioned. The cranial base angle was not different between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS In the western region of Saudi Arabia, Class II division 1 malocclusion has specific characteristics. The presence of prognathic maxilla, in this sample, indicates that the use of head gear therapy might be more appropriate than functional appliances when treating Class II division 1 malocclusion in Saudis living in the Western region.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the use of bone morphogenetic proteins to enhance postorthodontic stability in sheep and to develop a biological method of postorthodontic retention. MATERIALS AND METHODS First incisors were extracted in four mature and healthy sheep, and the second incisors were tipped reciprocally toward the midline and then retained. Dried bone matrix was injected into the distal periodontal space of the left second incisor. The right second incisor was left as a control. Both incisors were retained in the tipped position for 4 weeks. Then, the orthodontic appliance was removed and the teeth were left without retention. Six weeks later, the animals were killed and serial sections were prepared for histologic observation. RESULTS Unlike the control, the experimental second incisor maintained its tipped position with minimal relapse. On the distal periodontal space of the experimental tooth, areas of focal fusion between newly formed bone and newly formed areas of hypercementosis were observed. In the distal periodontal space of the control tooth, osteoclastic activity was observed along most of the socket wall, and the periodontal space appeared narrow and compressed. This brought the tooth close to the boundary of the alveolar bone, confirming the relapse observed on that side. CONCLUSION This study proposes a new method of retention in which a biologically safe osteoinductive material is used to retain the teeth via induction of points of approximation between the cementum and alveolar bone.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the current pattern of third molar impaction in a sample of Saudi patients. Methods One thousand thirty-nine orthopantomograms (OPG) of patients ranging in age from 19 to 46 years (536 males and 503 females) were evaluated to determine the frequency of impacted third molars, their levels of eruption, and their angulations. Results Four hundred twenty-two (40.5%) of the 1039 OPG showed at least one impacted third molar, with no significant difference between males (222; 52.6%) and females (200; 47.4%) (P = 0.284). The most common number of impacted third molars per OPG was one (72.5%). Impacted third molars were 1.64 times more likely to occur in the mandible than in the maxilla. The most common angulation of impaction in the mandible was the mesial (33.4%), while the most common angulation in the maxilla, was the vertical (49.6%). Level B impaction was the most common in both maxilla (48.2%) and mandible (67.7%). There was no significant difference in the frequency of impaction between the right and left sides in both jaws. Conclusion The pattern of third molar impaction in the western region of Saudi Arabia is characterized by a high prevalence of impaction that is greater in the mandibles and with no sex predilection.

Abstract
Corticotomy-assisted orthodontic treatment is an established and efficient orthodontic technique that has recently been studied in a number of publications. It has gradually gained popularity as an adjunct treatment option for the orthodontic treatment of adults. It involves selective alveolar decortication in the form of decortication lines and dots performed around the teeth that are to be moved. It is done to induce a state of increased tissue turnover and a transient osteopenia, which is followed by a faster rate of orthodontic tooth movement. This technique has several advantages, including faster tooth movement, shorter treatment time, safer expansion of constricted arches, enhanced post-orthodontic treatment stability and extended envelope of tooth movement. The aim of this article is to present a comprehensive review of the literature, including historical background, contemporary clinical techniques, indications, contraindications, complications and side effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND True unilateral posterior crossbite in adults is a challenging malocclusion to treat. Conventional expansion methods are expected to have some shortcomings. The aim of this paper is to introduce a new technique for treating unilateral posterior crossbite in adults, namely, corticotomy-assisted expansion (CAE) applied on two adult patients: one with a true unilateral crossbite and the other with an asymmetrical bilateral crossbite, both treated via modified corticotomy techniques and fixed orthodontic appliances. METHODS Two cases with asymmetric maxillary constriction were treated using CAE. RESULTS In both cases, effective asymmetrical expansion was achieved using CAE, and functional occlusion was established as well. CONCLUSIONS Unilateral CAE presents an effective and reliable technique to treat true unilateral crossbite.

Abstract
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is fundamental for Sertoli cell function stimulating spermatogenesis and follicular growth by a specific receptor (FSHR). This work aimed to investigate the occurrence of Asn and Ser FSHR gene variants and its relationship with seminal anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) among normozoospermic and infertile oligoasthenozoospermic (OAT) males. Eighty-two Caucasian males grouped into normozoospermic healthy controls (n = 30) and infertile OAT males (n = 52). FSHR gene variants were determined by DNA from anti-coagulated blood and underwent polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and electrophoresis in detecting amplification products. AMH in seminal plasma was determined by ELISA. The results showed that the frequency of FSHR gene variants among fertile men was 46.7% Asn/Asn (N680S), 33.3% Asn/Ser, and 20% Ser/Ser, whereas among OAT men were 34.6%, 38.5% and 26.9% respectively with nonsignificant differences. Seminal AMH was significantly higher in fertile than infertile OAT men. There was significant increase in seminal AMH with Asn/Asn variant of FSHR gene than those with Asn/Ser or Ser/Ser. It is concluded that FSH gene variants showed no difference in distribution between fertile or infertile OAT men. However, when correlated with seminal AMH values, there was an increase in Asn/Asn in men with high seminal AMH.

Abstract
Most studies of the neuroendocrine effects of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) have focused on its role in the regulation of the pituitary-adrenal axis; activation of this axis follows release of the peptide from CRF-containing terminals in the median eminence. However, a sizeable proportion of CRF fibres terminate within the hypothalamus itself, where synaptic contacts with other hypothalamic neuropeptidergic neurons (e.g. gonadotropin-releasing hormone-containing and opioidergic neurons) have been identified. Here, we summarize physiological and pharmacological data which provide insights into the nature and significance of these intrahypothalamic connections. It is now clear that CRF is a potent secretagogue of the three major endogenous opioid peptides (beta-endorphin, Met-enkephalin and dynorphin) and that it stimulates opioidergic neurons tonically. In the case of beta-endorphin, another hypothalamic peptide, arginine vasopressin, appears to be an essential mediator of CRF's effect, suggesting the occurrence of CRF synapses on, or in the vicinity of, vasopressin neurons; morphological support for this assumption is still wanting. Evidence for direct and indirect inhibitory effects of CRF on sexual behaviour and secretion of reproductive hormones is also presented; the indirect pathways include opioidergic neurons. An important conclusion from all these studies is that, in addition to its better known functions in producing adaptive responses during stressful situations, CRF might also contribute to the coordinated functioning of various components of the neuroendocrine system under basal conditions. Although feedback regulation of hypothalamic neuronal activity by peripheral steroids is a well-established tenet of endocrinology, data on modulation of the intrahypothalamic actions of CRF by adrenal and sex steroids are just emerging. Some of these newer findings may be useful in framing questions related to the mechanisms underlying disease states (such as depressive illness) in which CRF has been strongly implicated.

Abstract
European-American norms are still used in the orthodontic treatment of Saudi patients, despite the different ethnic backgrounds of Saudis. The aims of this study were to evaluate the cephalometric features of a Saudi population and to establish cephalometric norms for Saudis living in the western region of Saudi Arabia. Seventy lateral cephalometric radiographs of Saudis (32 females and 38 males; aged 18-28 years) with acceptable profiles and Class I dental relationships were traced and analyzed. The mean value, standard deviation, and range of 16 angular and linear variables were calculated. The resulting norms for Saudis were compared with European-American norms using an independent t-test. Male and female groups were also compared using the t-test. Saudis tend to have an increased ANB angle because of retrognathic mandibles and bimaxillary protrusion as compared with European-Americans. Males tend to have more prognathic mandibles than females as indicated by the statistically significant increase in facial angle (P < .05) and SNB angle (P < .05). Although the anterior lower face height was similar in males and females, males tend to have a steeper mandibular plane angle when related to the anterior cranial base than females (P < .05). Saudis have distinct cephalometric features, which should be used as a reference in treating Saudi orthodontic patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evaluation of self perceived and actual need for orthodontic treatment helps in planning orthodontic services and estimating the required resources and man power. In the present study, the perceptive need as evaluated by patients and the actual need to orthodontic treatment, as assessed by orthodontists, were evaluated at two types of dental practices in the city of Jeddah using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). METHODS A consecutive sample of 743 adults seeking orthodontic treatment at two different types of dental practices in Jeddah; King Abdulaziz University, Faculty of Dentistry (KAAU) (Free treatment) and two private dental polyclinics (PDP) (Paid treatment), was examined for orthodontic treatment need using the dental health component (DHC) of the IOTN. The self-perceived need for orthodontic treatment was also determined using the aesthetic component (AC) of the IOTN. The IOTN score and the incidence of each variable were calculated statistically. AC and DHC categories were compared using the Chi-Square and a correlation between them was assessed using Spearman's correlation test. AC and DHC were also compared between the two types of dental practices using the Chi-Square. RESULTS The results revealed that among the 743 patients studied, 60.6% expressed no or slight need for treatment, 23.3% expressed moderate to borderline need and only16.1% thought they needed orthodontic treatment. Comparing these estimates to professional judgments, only 15.2% conformed to little or no need for treatment, 13.2% were assessed as in borderline need and 71.6% were assessed as in need for treatment (p < 0.001). Spearman's correlation test proved no correlation (r = -.045) between the two components. Comparing the AC and the DHC between the KAAU group and PDP group showed significant differences between the two groups (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Patient's perception to orthodontic treatment does not always correlate with professional assessment. The IOTN is a valid screening tool that should be used in orthodontic clinics for better services especially, in health centers that provide free treatment.

Abstract
Background Previous studies have established specific cephalometric norms for children with different ethnic backgrounds, showing different facial features for each group. Up till now, there is a paucity of information about the cephalometric features of Saudi children living in the western region of Saudi Arabia, who have distinct social and climatic characteristics. The aim of the present study was to establish cephalometric norms for children living in the western region of Saudi Arabia. Methods A total of 62 lateral cephalometric radiographs of Saudis (33 females and 29 males; aged 9–12 years) having good facial proportions and Class I dental occlusion, were traced and analyzed. Using the t-test, the mean value, standard deviation and the range of 20 angular and linear variables were calculated and compared to norms of adult Saudis living in the Western region of Saudi Arabia using the t-test. Male and female groups were also compared using the t- test. Results Saudi children tend to have a significantly shorter and lower face height, a larger angle of convexity, and more proclined and protruded incisors when compared with adult Saudis (P < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences between male and female groups. Conclusion Saudi children have distinct cephalometric features, which should be used as a reference in the orthodontic treatment of young Saudi patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objectives of this research were to assess the quality of dental services delivered in King Abdulaziz University and highlight the necessary recommendations that would improve it. METHODS The methods used were live photographs illustrating the structure of dental services of the faculty presented in the clinic buildings, waiting places, equipments, instruments and supplies, as well as the comfort and privacy. Review of official records of the faculty for the number, qualifications and training of the dental staff and auxiliary personnel, as well as the process of care (starting from patient registration until completion of treatment). Records also demonstrated the access and utilization of services delivered in the various departments, the quality of these services and of infection control measures and procedures. RESULTS The results revealed the high quality of services delivered through evaluating the structure and process of care in the university dental clinics. CONCLUSIONS Dental services of King Abdulaziz University conform to high quality standards, with implementation of some changes for improvement and development.

Abstract
Onplants are known to provide absolute anchorage for orthodontic tooth movement in humans if loaded after 3 to 4 months, and can be removed after use. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the speed and effectiveness of osteointegration of onplants treated with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) and/or dentin matrix protein-1 (DMP-1) in rabbits. Fifty-four onplants were placed on the calvaria of 9 rabbits. Onplants were divided into four groups: rBMP-2, rDMP-1, BMP-2 +DMP-1 (B+D), and controls. The hydroxyapatite surface of each onplant was soaked in a solution of the assigned protein in each of the study groups or a phosphate buffer solution in the control group. Onplants were inserted into subperiosteal tunnels and allowed to heal for 6 weeks. After euthanizing the animals, bone blocks, each containing an onplant, were prepared for either histological examination or biomechanical characterization. Histological and histomorphometric results demonstrated significant bone formation at the bone-onplant interface in the BMP-2 and B+D groups when compared with DMP1 and the controls. Mechanically, onplants treated with BMP-2 withstood tensile forces between 3.4 and 5.0 kg. Onplants treated with BMP-2 and DMP1 (B+D) withstood an average of 3 kg of pulling forces. On the other hand, onplants in the DMP1 and control groups withstood forces ranging between 0 kg to 1.3 kg. Abstract
OBJECTIVES In a histopathologic study, we assessed the balance of cell proliferation and apoptosis by counting the number of apoptotic and proliferating cell nuclear antigen-positive cells in freshly harvested atherectomy specimens from 34 patients. BACKGROUND Remodeling of human coronary arteries is an adaptive process that alters vascular lumen size. METHODS Intravascular ultrasound was performed prior to atherectomy. Total vessel area (area within the external elastic lamina [EEL]), lumen area and plaque area were measured at the region of interest (ROI), and at a proximal and distal reference segment, utilizing the formula Delta(%)=100x(ROI-reference segment)/reference segment. Positive arterial remodeling (R+) resulting in luminal expansion was defined as DeltaEEL >10%. Absence of remodeling (0 < DeltaEEL <10%) and constrictive arterial remodeling (DeltaEEL <0) were considered as neutral remodeling (R0) and negative remodeling (R-), respectively. RESULTS In R- lesions, apoptotic indices (APO) were significantly elevated (17.17 +/- 2.19%) compared with R+ lesions (4.89 +/- 1.7%; p = 0.0007). In a rabbit iliac percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty model intimal apoptosis was increased four weeks after balloon angioplasty injury (APO 8.8 +/- 0.03%) compared with contralateral untreated segments (APO 3.0 +/- 0.04%, n = 6). Lesions with an EEL/intimal area <3.0 showed significantly more intimal apoptosis than untreated lesions (p = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS The data indicate that constrictive remodeling of atherosclerotic coronary lesions is associated with increased apoptosis of intimal cells. We speculate that increased apoptosis is due to extensive plaque healing after episodes of symptomatic or asymptomatic plaque rupture.
