Abstract
BACKGROUND Complex orbital fractures are impure orbital fractures because they involve the orbital walls and mid-facial bones. The author reported an orbital wall restoration technique in which the primary orbital wall fragments were restored to their prior position in complex orbital fractures in 2020. As a follow-up to a previous preliminary study, this study retrospectively reviewed the surgical results of complex orbital wall fractures over a 4-year period and compared the surgical outcomes by dividing them into groups with and without balloon restoration. METHODS Data of 939 patients with facial bone fractures between August 2018 and August 2022 were reviewed. Of these, 154 had complex orbital fractures. Among them, 44 and 110 underwent reduction with and without the balloon technique respectively. Pre- and postoperative Naugle exophthalmometer (Good-Lite Co.) scales were evaluated. The orbital volume and orbital volume ratio were calculated from preoperative and 6 months postoperative computed tomography images. RESULTS Among 154 patients with complex orbital fractures, 44 patients underwent restoration with the balloon technique, and 110 patients underwent restoration without it. The Naugle scale did not differ significantly between the two groups, but the orbital volume ratio significantly decreased by 3.32% and 2.39% in groups with and without the balloon technique and the difference in OVR was significantly greater in patients in the balloon restoration group compared with the control group. Postoperative balloon rupture occurred in six out of 44 cases (13.64%). None of the six patients with balloon rupture showed significant enophthalmos at 6 months of follow-up. CONCLUSION The balloon rupture rate was 13.64% (6/44 cases) with marginal screw fixation, blunt screws, and extra protection with a resorbable foam dressing. Furthermore, we restored the orbital wall with primary orbital fragments using balloon support in complex orbital wall fractures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Treating panfacial fractures (PFFs) can be extremely difficult even for experienced surgeons. Although several authors have attempted to systemize the surgical approach, performing surgery by applying a unidirectional sequence is much more difficult in practice. The purpose of this study was to review the literature on PFF surgery sequence and to understand how different surgical specialists-plastic reconstructive surgery (PRS) and oral maxillofacial surgery (OMS)-chose sequence and review PFFs fixation sequence in clinical cases. METHODS The PubMed and Google Scholar databases were scoured for publications published up until May 2020. Data extracted from the studies using standard templates included fracture part, fixation sequence, originating specialist, and the countries. Bibliographic details like author and year of publication were also extracted. Also, we reviewed the data for PFFs patients in the Trauma Registry System of Dankook University Hospital from 2011 to 2021. RESULTS In total, 240 articles were identified. This study comprised 22 studies after screening and full-text analysis. Sixteen studies (12 OMS specialists and 4 PRS specialists) used a "bottom-top" approach, whereas three studies (1 OMS specialist and 2 PRS specialists) used a "top-bottom" method. However, three studies (only OMS specialists) reported on both sequences. In our hospital, there were a total of 124 patients with PFF who were treated during 2011 to 2021; 64 (51.6%) were in upper-middle parts, 52 (41.9%) were in mid-lower parts, and eight (6.5%) were in three parts. CONCLUSION Bottom-top sequencing was mainly used in OMS specialists, and top-bottom sequencing was used at a similar rate by two specialists in literature review. In our experience, however, it was hard to consistently implement unidirectional sequence suggested by a literature review. We realigned the reliable and stable buttresses first with tailoring individually for each patient, rather than proceeding in the unidirectional sequence like bottom-top or top-bottom.

Abstract
An anatomical understanding of median nerve variation is essential for successful decompression of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Although iatrogenic injury of the thenar branch after carpal tunnel release (CTR) has not been reported in many cases, it can cause serious damage to the patient. In case of rapidly progressing thenar atrophy after CTS surgery, thenar branch of median nerve injury should be suspected. Nerve conduction examination and ultrasound before surgery can be a useful tool for diagnosis.

Abstract
Blast furnace slag (BFS) used in the road construction as base/subbase materials leads to leachate problems under poor drainage conditions. The BSF leachate is a source of high pH, sulfur, and dissolved solids which will be affected to surrounding ecosystem. A column experiment was performed to evaluate the treatment of BFS leachate by media commonly used in passive treatment systems. The treatment efficiency of column media was assessed for inorganic (gravel and limestone) and organic (peat and mushroom compost) with zero-valent iron (ZVI). Columns were dosed with experimentally generated BFS leachate and operated under residence times of 7 and 14 days. The column depths of 45 cm and 75 cm allowed for determination of the role of anoxic conditions in the transformation, precipitation, and adsorption of dissolved constituents. The organic treatments were more effective for reducing pH, TDS, sulfate, and total sulfur. Mushroom compost, with ZVI and a residence time of 14 days, was the most effective matrix for the removal of sulfate (67%), and total sulfur (72%). Peat treatments resulted in the lowest pH at 6.34; however, concentrations of Al, Fe, Mg, and Mn were elevated. Organic biofilters utilizing sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and ZVI may prove to be useful for treating BFS leachate and other sources of sulfur and TDS pollution.

Abstract
Although the physiological function of receptor-interacting protein kinase (RIPK) 3 has emerged as a critical mediator of programmed necrosis/necroptosis, the intracellular role it plays as an attenuator in human lungs and human bronchial epithelia remains unclear. Here, we show that the expression of RIPK3 dramatically decreased in the inflamed tissues of human lungs, and moved from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. The overexpression of RIPK3 dramatically increased F-actin formation and decreased the expression of genes for pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6 and IL-1β), but not siRNA-RIPK3. Interestingly, whereas RIPK3 was bound to histone 1b without LPS stimulation, the interaction between them was disrupted after 15 min of LPS treatment. Histone methylation could not maintain the binding of RIPK3 and activated movement towards the cytoplasm. In the cytoplasm, overexpressed RIPK3 continuously attenuated pro-inflammatory cytokine gene expression by inhibiting NF-κB activation, preventing the progression of inflammation during Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection. Our data indicated that RIPK3 is critical for the regulation of the LPS-induced inflammatory microenvironment. Therefore, we suggest that RIPK3 is a potential therapeutic candidate for bacterial infection-induced pulmonary inflammation.

Abstract
Background: Personal mobility devices (PMDs) have become an increasingly popular transport modality globally. With increasing social interest in and demand for PMDs, the number of individuals visiting emergency departments with PMD-related injuries has also increased annually. This study aimed to evaluate injury patterns and treatment costs for patients treated in the department of plastic surgery in a trauma center.Methods: In this retrospective study, data concerning patients with PMD-related injuries from January 2017 to December 2021 were reviewed. The data retrieved included age, sex, alcohol consumption, helmet use, the type of impact, onset of injury, place of first visit, type of injury, admission status, operation status, and treatment cost. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to determine the effects of various factors on cost.Results: Data were collected from 93 patients. Until 2019, the annual number of PMD-related accidents was less than 10; however, this number increased sharply in 2020. The average cost of hospitalization was USD 7,698 whereas the average cost of non-hospitalization was USD 631. Only fractures had a significant association with total cost in linear regression analysis (<i>p</i> < 0.001).Conclusion: The prevalence of PMD use and related injuries requiring plastic surgery during the study period showed significant health and financial costs both to the patients involved and to society. This cost could be reduced through stricter regulations concerning PMD use, advocating the use of protective gear, and promoting greater awareness of safety measures and of the consequences of PMD-related accidents.

Abstract
Background This study assessed the effect of a single bolus administration of lidocaine on the prevention of tourniquet-induced hypertension (TIH) and compared the effect of lidocaine to that of ketamine in patients undergoing general anesthesia. Methods This randomized, controlled, double-blind study included 75 patients who underwent lower limb surgery using a tourniquet. The patients were administered lidocaine (1.5 mg/kg, n = 25), ketamine (0.2 mg/kg, n = 25) or placebo (n = 25). The study drugs were administered intravenously 10 min before tourniquet inflation. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and heart rate (HR) were measured before tourniquet inflation, after tourniquet inflation for 60 min at 10 min intervals, and immediately after tourniquet deflation. The incidence of TIH, defined as an increase of 30% or more in SBP or DBP during tourniquet inflation, was also recorded. Results SBP, DBP, and HR increased significantly over time in the control group compared to those in the lidocaine and ketamine groups for 60 min after tourniquet inflation (P < 0.001, P < 0.001, and P = 0.007, respectively). The incidence of TIH was significantly lower in the lidocaine (n = 4, 16%) and ketamine (n = 3, 12%) group than in the control group (n = 14, 56%) (P = 0.001). Conclusion Single-bolus lidocaine effectively attenuated blood pressure increase due to tourniquet inflation, with an effect comparable to that of bolus ketamine.

Abstract
Currently, almost 70% of the world's population occupies urban areas. Owing to the high population density in these regions, they are exposed to various types of air pollutants. Fine particle air pollutants (<2.5 μm) can easily invade the human respiratory system, causing health issues. For fine particulate matter filtration, the use of a face mask filter is efficient; however, its use is accompanied by a high-pressure drop, making breathing difficult. Electrostatic interactions in the filter of the face mask constitute the dominant filtration mechanism for capturing fine particulate matter; these masks are, however, significantly weakened by the high humidity in exhaled breath. In this study, we demonstrate that a filter with an electrostatically rechargeable structure operates with normal breathing air power. In our novel face mask, a filter membrane is assembled by layer-by-layer stacking of the electrospun PVDF nanofiber mat formed on a nylon mesh. Tribo/piezoelectric characteristics via multilayer structure enhance filtration performance, even under air-powered filter bending taken as a normal breathing condition. The air gap between nanofiber and mesh layers increases air diffusion time and preserves the electrostatic charges within the multi-layered nanofiber filter membrane under humid air penetration, which is advantageous for face mask applications.

Abstract
A microfluidic circuit on a disk platform, also known as lab-on-a-disk, is an integrated system for automated high-throughput screening for biochemical analysis. The microfluidic circuit on a disk performs biochemical analysis through sequential processes such as filtration, separation, detection, and synthesis of reagents. Sequential processes in microfluidic circuits operate through the systematically linked components, which include channels, valves, and chambers. The microchannels should have micrometer-scale for precise micro-volume liquid control in the microfluidic circuit on a disk. However, it is difficult to also consider productivity in the traditional technology. In addition, as the channel length increases, much effort is required to construct the components of the microfluidic circuit in the limited space of the disk. 3D printing is drawing attention as a microfluidic channel fabrication technique in order to overcome the physical limitations of the traditional methods. A new concept of a 3D slope valve has been developed, which performs precise and sequential micro-volume liquid control through centrifugal and gravitational forces. Micro-volumes of liquids in a slope valve-equipped circuit are controlled over a wide range of angular velocities through the control of the valve geometry, types of liquid and volume. For sequential micro-volume of liquid control, three lines of assembled modules are connected to a microfluidic circuit. In the microfluidic circuit with slope valves, the detection of fluorescent dye tagged-VEGF is possible through sequential mixing and reaction processes. As a result, micro-volume liquid is successfully controlled with high accuracy using the 3D microfluidic circuit with a slope valve.

Abstract
Although diesel airborne particulate matter (PM2.5) has been known to play a role in many human diseases, there is no direct evidence that therapeutic drugs or proteins can diminish PM2.5-induced diseases. Nevertheless, studies examining the negative control mechanisms of PM2.5-induced diseases are critical to develop novel therapeutic medications. In this study, the consensus PDZ peptide of ZO-1 inhibited PM2.5-induced inflammatory cell infiltration, pro-inflammatory cytokine gene expression, and TEER in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid and AM cells. Our data indicated that the PDZ domain in ZO-1 is critical for regulation of the PM2.5-induced inflammatory microenvironment. Therefore, the PDZ peptide may be a potential therapeutic candidate during PM-induced respiratory diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We have reported orbital wall restoration surgery with primary orbital wall fragment in pure blowout fractures using a combination of transorbital and transnasal approach in pure blow out fractures. However, this method was thought to be difficult to use for complex orbital wall fractures, since the sharp screw tip that fixate the maxillary wall increases the risk of balloon ruptures. In this study, we reviewed 23 cases of complex orbital fractures that underwent orbital wall restoration surgery with primary orbital wall fragment and evaluated the result. METHODS A retrospective review was conducted of 23 patients with complex orbital fracture who underwent orbital restoration surgery with primary orbital wall fragments between 2012 and 2019. The patients underwent orbital wall restoration surgery with primary orbital wall fragment with temporary balloon support. The surgical results were evaluated by the Naugle scale and a comparison of preoperative and postoperative orbital volume ratio. Complex fracture type, type of screw used for fixation and complications such as balloon rupture were also investigated. RESULTS There were 23 patients with complex orbital fracture that used transnasal balloon technique for restoration. 17 cases had a successful outcome with no complications, three patients had postoperative balloon rupture, two patients had soft-tissue infection, and one patient had balloon malposition. CONCLUSION The orbital wall restoration technique with temporary balloon support can produce favorable results when done correctly even in complex orbital wall fracture. Seventeen cases had favorable results, six cases had postoperative complications thus additional procedure seems necessary to complement this method.

Abstract
Most orbital surgeons believe that it's difficult to restore the primary orbital wall to its previous position and that the orbital wall is so thin that cannot be firmly its primary position. Therefore, orbital wall fractures generally have been reconstructed by replacing the bony defect with a synthetic implant. Although synthetic implants have sufficient strength to maintain their shape and position in the orbital cavity, replacement surgery has some drawbacks due to the residual permanent implants. In previous studies, the author has reported an orbital wall restoring technique in which the primary orbital wall fragment was restored to its prior position through a combination of the transorbital and transantral approaches. Simple straight and curved elevators were introduced transnasally to restore the orbital wall and to maintain temporary extraorbital support in the maxillary and ethmoid sinus. A transconjunctival approach provided sufficient space for implant insertion, while the transnasal approach enabled restoration of the herniated soft tissue back into the orbit. Fracture defect was reduced by restoring the primary orbital wall fragment to its primary position, making it possible to use relatively small size implant, furthermore, extraorbital support from both sinuses decreased the incidence of implant displacement. The author could recreate a natural shape of the orbit with the patient's own orbital bone fragments with this dual approach and effectively restored the orbital volume and shape. This procedure has the advantages for retrieving the orbital contents and restoring the primary orbital wall to its prior position.

Abstract
Intraorbital infection shows a low incidence, but it might cause blindness or even death. This case is unusual in that its origin from a craniofacial bone fracture prior to infection of the maxillary sinus. A 33-year-old female patient was referred for right cheek swelling. When she visited the emergency room, we removed right cheek hematoma and bacterial examination was done. In the past, she had craniofacial bone surgical history due to a traffic accident 6 years ago. Next day, the swelling had remained with proptosis and pus was recognized in the conjunctiva. We planned an emergency operation and removed the pus which was already spread inside the orbit. And the evaluation for sinusitis was consulted to the otorhinolaryngology department simultaneously. There were Prevotella oralis and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis bacterial infection in the intraorbital and sinus respectively. Afterwards, the vigorous dressing was done for over a month with intravenous antibiotics. Though the intraorbital infection was resolved, blindness and extraocular movement limitation were inevitable. In conclusion, close follow up of the maxillary sinus in facial bone fracture patients is important and aggressive treatment is needed when an infection is diagnosed.

After myocardial infarction (MI), mitral valve (MV) tethering and fibrosis stimulate functional mitral regurgitation (MR), resulting in high morbidity of heart failure and cardiac mortality. However, pharmacological treatment has not been proven effective in reducing ischemic MR. MV change post-MI is associated with an excessive endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) by transforming growth factor (TGF)-β overexpression and also with left ventricular (LV) remodeling. In a recent clinical study using echocardiography, angiotensin receptor neprilysin inhibitor (ARNI) reduced functional MR to a greater extent than did valsartan, but the mechanism was not revealed.
Purpose
This study tested the hypothesis that treatment of neprilysin inhibitor attenuates functional MR after MI by facilitating LV reverse remodeling and suppressing EMT which mitigates inadequate leaflet adaptation.
Methods
In male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=31), functional MR was induced by occluding the left circumflex coronary artery. Two weeks after MI, MR and LV dilatation were confirmed by echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Rats were randomly assigned to LCZ696 treatment (ARNI, 60 mg/kg/d, n=10), valsartan treatment (30mg/kg/d, n=10), or corn oil only (MR control group; n=11). After 6 weeks, LV volumes, functions and MR extent were quantified by using echocardiography, cardiac MRI and pressure-volume loop analysis. Also, excised mitral leaflets and LV were analyzed by histopathology and primary cultured valvular endothelial cells (VECs) were evaluated focusing on molecular changes.
Results
LCZ696 significantly attenuated post-MI LV dilatation after 6 weeks when compared with the control group (LV end-diastolic volume (EDV), 461.3±41.3 uL versus 525.1±78.2 uL; p<0.05), while valsartan did not (LV EDV, 471.2±26.8 uL; p>0.05 to control). There were no significant differences in the change of arterial pressure and ejection fraction between the treatment groups, however, dP/dt was greater in the LCZ696 group than in the MR control group (8203±286 mmHg/s for LCZ696 versus 6936±555 mmHg/s for MR control; p=0.01). MR extent and LA volume were significantly decreased in the LCZ696 group compared with the valsartan group. Pathological analysis showed that fibrosis was more prominent in the MR control than in the LCZ696 group. LCZ696 strongly reduced leaflet thickness, TGF-β, and downstream phosphorylated extracellular-signal-regulated kinase and EMT (25.4±11.8% vs. 53.4±12.6% α-smooth muscle actin-positive VECs; p<0.05). Leaflet area increased comparably (5%) in the LCZ696 group compared with the valsartan group.
Conclusions
Neprilysin inhibitor has positive effects on LV reverse remodeling and also directly modulates profibrotic changes of MV leaflets post-MI without eliminating adaptive growth. Understanding the mechanisms could provide new opportunities to ARNI reducing ischemic MR.

Abstract
Zinc oxide(ZnO) is a versatile semiconductor material and its use is expanding into photoelectric applications. Anisotropic growth characteristics of ZnO are advantageous for growing a nanowire structure. ZnO nanowire based sensors exhibit enhanced performance in terms of photodetection due to their large specific surface area. ZnO nanowires on a highly aligned electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) nanofiber-based film are fabricated high performance ultraviolet (UV) detector. The movement of photo-induced electrons from ZnO nanowires is more effective in aligned electrospun film substrate (Rsq,off/Rsq,on = 551.0) than random electrospun film substrate (Rsq,off/Rsq,on = 47.8) under continuous UV irradiation. The current difference is 3.98 times higher on ZnO nanowires on aligned electrospun film than it is on random electrospun film in UV light on-off cycles. As a result, we improve the performance of photo sensitivity of electrospun nanofiber-based ZnO nanowires through controlling the directionality and fabrication time of the electrospun film without additional processes.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to investigate the outcomes of gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) therapy with or without growth hormone (GH) therapy for girls with idiopathic central precocious puberty (CPP). METHODS The medical records of 166 girls diagnosed with CPP from 2002 to 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. All included patients were treated with GnRHa for ≥36 months. Changes in height standard deviation score (SDS) for bone age, chronological age (CA), and predicted adult height (PAH) were assessed for the first three years of treatment. The final height gain SDS was calculated as the difference between the initial PAH SDS and adult height (AH) SDS; these were then compared between the GnRHa group (group A, n=135) and the combined GnRHa/GH group (group B, n=31). RESULTS The initial mean CA was 7.89 years. The mean menarcheal age was 13.12 years (group A, 13.1±0.99; group B, 13.18±0.58 years; P=0.755). PAH SDS at the start of GnRHa treatment and AH SDS were significantly lower in group B than in group A (PAH SDS: -2.20±0.83 vs. -3.19±0.84, P<0.001; AH SDS: 0.18±084 vs. -0.30±0.66, P=0.021). The increase in PAH SDS was higher in group B than in group A for the first three years of GnRHa treatment (1.66±0.66 vs. 2.35±0.93, P<0.001). The height gain SDS was significantly higher in group B than in group A (2.5±0.75 vs. 2.93±1.02, P=0.048). Younger age, higher PAH at the start of treatment, and a greater increase in PAH SDS during the first year of GnRHa treatment positively affected AH. CONCLUSION The combined GH group had more additional height gain than the GnRHa-alone group.

Abstract
Objective Forehead deformities are often caused by lack of treatment or incorrect restoration of the frontal buttress, so the underlying frontal buttress should be restored to its previous position to ensure that the previous forehead contour is restored in cases of complex depressed skull fractures. However, since brain injuries from skull fractures could have fatal consequences, the clinical concern in primary surgery has been to save the patient's life, and cosmetic concerns have always been secondary. We retrospectively reviewed fronto-orbital fracture patients who underwent primary restoration with primary bone fragments or an alloplastic implant and compared the surgical outcomes of autologous bone (group 1) and artificial materials (group 2). Methods A retrospective review was conducted of 47 patients with fronto-orbital fractures between March 2012 and January 2018. The patients underwent primary reconstruction with primary bone fragments or an alloplastic implant. The surgical results were evaluated by the incidence of infection and cosmetic satisfaction of patients. Results Infections occurred in one patient (5%) in group 1 and in two patients (15.3%) in group 2, which was not a statistically significant difference. In contrast, at 6 months after surgery, patient satisfaction showed a statistically significant between-group difference (group 1: 4.32 points, group 2: 3.54 points, p=0.001). Conclusion Primary reconstruction using fractured bone fragments is an effective and preferable method that could result in better surgical outcomes than restoration using an alloplastic implant.

Prophylactic antibiotics that are used to prevent post-operative infection can commonly cause anaphylactic reactions during anesthesia. It is therefore necessary to perform a skin test before antibiotics are administered in order to diagnose and prevent anaphylactic reactions. However, the results of the antibiotic skin test can differ according to the drug, dose, and reagent concentration. We report a case of anaphylactic shock with bronchospasm and cardiovascular collapse immediately following administration of the prophylactic cefazedone after induction of general anesthesia for laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Orbital resorbable mesh plates are adequate to use for isolated floor and medial wall fractures with an intact bony buttress, but are not recommended to use for large orbital wall fractures that need load bearing support. The author previously reported an orbital wall restoring surgery that restored the orbital floor to its prior position through the transnasal approach and maintained temporary extraorbital support with a balloon in the maxillary sinus. Extraorbital support could reduce the load applied on the orbital implants in orbital wall restoring surgery and the use of resorbable implants was considered appropriate for the author's orbital wall restoring technique. METHODS A retrospective review was conducted of 31 patients with pure unilateral orbital floor fractures between May 2014 and May 2018. The patients underwent transnasal restoration of the orbital floor through insertion of a resorbable mesh plate and maintenance of temporary balloon support. The surgical results were evaluated by the Hertel scale and a comparison of preoperative and postoperative orbital volume ratio (OVR) values. RESULTS The OVR decreased significantly, by an average of 6.01% (p< 0.05) and the preoperative and postoperative Hertel scale measurements decreased by an average of 0.34 mm with statistical significance (p< 0.05). No complications such as buckling or sagging of the implant occurred among the 31 patients. CONCLUSION The use of resorbable mesh plate in orbital floor restoration surgery is an effective and safe technique that can reduce implant deformation or complications deriving from the residual permanent implant.

Abstract
The effect of relative humidity (RH) on the antimicrobial efficacy of chlorine dioxide (ClO2 ) gas against foodborne pathogens on tomatoes was evaluated. Also, levels of ClO2 residues on tomatoes after exposure to ClO2 gas under different RH conditions were measured to determine the quantity of solubilized ClO2 gas on tomato surfaces. Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella Typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes were inoculated on tomatoes and exposed to ClO2 gas (5, 10, 20 and 30 ppmv) under different RH conditions (50, 70 and 90%). As ClO2 gas concentration and treatment time increased, significant differences (P < 0·05) were observed between inactivation levels under different RH conditions. Exposure to 30 ppmv of ClO2 gas (50% RH) for 20 min resulted in 1·22-1·52 log reductions of the three foodborne pathogens. Levels of the three foodborne pathogens were reduced to below the detection limit (0·48 log CFU per cm2 ) within 15 min when exposed to 30 ppmv of ClO2 gas at 70% RH and within 10 min at 90% RH. At a given ClO2 gas concentration, ClO2 residues on tomatoes significantly (P < 0·05) increased with increasing RH, and there were close correlations between log reductions of pathogens and ClO2 residues on tomatoes. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This study reported on the correlation between the amount of ClO2 residues on produce surfaces and the level of inactivation of pathogens after ClO2 gas treatment. Variations in RH have great effect on the solubilization of ClO2 gas on tomato surfaces considering that ClO2 residues on tomatoes increased with increasing RH. Also, the amount of ClO2 residues on tomatoes is positively correlated with the level of inactivation of pathogens. The results of this study provide insights for predicting inactivation patterns of foodborne pathogens by ClO2 gas for practical application by the fresh produce industry.

Abstract
We report a case of free flap deterioration which may have been induced by pressure gradient resulting from cranial defect overlying a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VP shunt). The patient, male and aged 78, had a VP shunt operation for progressive hydrocephalus. Afterwards, the scalp skin flap surrounding the VP shunt collapsed and showed signs of necrosis, exposing part of the shunt catheter. After covering the defect with a radial forearm free flap, the free flap site showed signs of gradual sinking while the vascularity of the flap remained unimpaired. An agreement was reached to remove the shunt device and observe the patient for any neurological symptoms, and after the shunt was removed and the previous cranial opening filled with fibrin glue by Neurosurgery, we debrided the deteriorated flap and provided coverage with 2 large opposing rotational flaps. During 2 months' outpatient follow-up no neurological symptoms appeared, and the new scalp flap displayed slight depression but remained intact. The patient has declined from any further follow-up since.

Abstract
Bacterial biopolymers have drawn much attention owing to their unconventional three-dimensional structures and interesting functions, which are closely integrated with bacterial physiology. The nongenetic modulation of bacterial (Acetobacter xylinum) cellulose synthesis via nanocarbon hybridization, and its application to the emulation of layered neuronal tissue, is reported. The controlled dispersion of graphene oxide (GO) nanoflakes into bacterial cellulose (BC) culture media not only induces structural changes within a crystalline cellulose nanofibril, but also modulates their 3D collective association, leading to substantial reduction in Young's modulus (≈50%) and clear definition of water-hydrogel interfaces. Furthermore, real-time investigation of 3D neuronal networks constructed in this GO-incorporated BC hydrogel with broken chiral nematic ordering revealed the vertical locomotion of growth cones, the accelerated neurite outgrowth (≈100 µm per day) with reduced backward travel length, and the efficient formation of synaptic connectivity with distinct axonal bifurcation abundancy at the ≈750 µm outgrowth from a cell body. In comparison with the pristine BC, GO-BC supports the formation of well-defined neuronal bilayer networks with flattened interfacial profiles and vertical axonal outgrowth, apparently emulating the neuronal development in vivo. We envisioned that our findings may contribute to various applications of engineered BC hydrogel to fundamental neurobiology studies and neural engineering.

Abstract
Background As herpes zoster progresses via postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) to well-established PHN, it presents its recalcitrant nature to the treatment. At this point, the well-established PHN is fixed as a non-treatable, but manageable chronic painful neuropathic disorder. This study evaluated the incidence of complete relief from PHN according to PHN duration at their first visit, and the other factors influencing it. Methods A retrospective chart review was performed on patients with PHN at a university-based pain clinic over 7 years. The responders were defined as patients who had complete relief from pain after 1 year of active treatment. Age, sex, PHN duration at their first visit, dermatomal distribution, and underlying disorders were compared in the responder and non-responder groups. Responders were also compared according to these factors. Results Among 117 PHN patients (M/F = 48/69), 35 patients (29.9%) had complete relief from PHN. Mean ages were 64.3 ± 10.6 and 66.9 ± 10.7 years, numbers of male to female patients were 11/24 and 37/45, and mean durations of PHN at their first visit were 8.5 ± 6.3 and 15.3 ± 10.7 months in the responder and non- responder groups, respectively. In addition, PHN patients who visited the clinic before 9 months showed a better result. Dermatomal distribution and underlying disorders did not show significant differences. Conclusions Almost 30% of PHN patients received complete relief. Those who sought treatment in a pain clinic before 9 months received a better result.

Abstract
The biological applications of vertical nanostructures mostly rely on their intracellular accessibility through the cellular membrane by promoting cell-to-nanostructure interactions. Herein, we report a seemingly counter-intuitive approach for the spontaneous formation of mouse induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived three-dimensional spherical colonies with unlimited self-renewal and differentiation potential. The comprehensive analyses of iPSCs cultured on vertical silicon nanocolumn arrays (vSNAs) with various nanocolumn geometries show reduced cell-to-substrate adhesion and enhanced cell-to-cell interactions under optimized vSNA conditions, successfully accommodating the spontaneous production of iPSC-derived spherical colonies. Remarkably, these colonies which were only minimally penetrated by and thereby easily harvested from wafer-sized vSNAs display a substantial increase in pluripotency marker expression and successfully differentiate into three germ layers. Our vSNAs capable of large-scale fabrication, efficient for spherical colony formation, and reusable for multiple iPSC culture could serve as a broad-impact culture platform for stem cell research.

Because there is different body mass index (BMI) for obesity globally, studies based on BMI levels on association of obesity with osteoporosis were quite few. Therefore, we discussed the relationship of body composition with skeletal BMD according to WHO BMI and BMI on Working Group on Obesity in China (WGOC). METHODS A total of 502 adult men aged 20-89 were enrolled as healthy subjects for osteoporosis study at Qianfoshan Hospital, Shandong University between September 2008 and August 2010. According to WHO BMI, all subjects were divided into three groups: normal weight (18.5 ≤ BMI < 25 kg/m(2), n = 202), overweight (25 ≤ BMI < 30 kg/m(2), n = 242), and obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m(2), n = 58). According to WGOC BMI, normal weight (18.5 ≤ BMI < 24 kg/m(2), n = 137), overweight (24 ≤ BMI < 28 kg/m(2), n = 225), and obesity (BMI ≥ 28 kg/m(2), n = 140). Total body and regional BMD, lean mass (LM), lean body mass index (LBMI), fat mass (FM), percent body fat (%BF) and fat mass index (FMI) were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Age-partial Pearson correlation analyses between body composition-related parameters and BMD. Multiple regression analyses were performed to explore the associations of BMD with LM, LBMI, FM, %BF and FMI. RESULTS Fat mass (FM), %BF, FMI, LM and LBMI were positively correlated with BMD at almost sites (P < 0.001) in all subjects. However, the relationship was not different among groups. LM, LBMI, FM and FMI were positively correlated with BMD (P < 0.01) in normal weight. LM and LBMI appeared significantly positive with BMD in overweight and obesity according to WHO and WGOC criteria. %BF and FMI were negative significance with BMD at total body and some regional BMD according to WHO criteria in overweight (P < 0.05). In two obese groups, %BF appeared negatively significant with BMD (P < 0.05) according to WGOC criteria, and %BF and FMI appeared negatively significant with BMD (P < 0.05) according to WHO criteria. In regression of independent variables as FM and LM, LM showed statistically positively significant relations with BMD at almost sites (P < 0.05) in all groups. FM appeared positively significant with BMD in normal groups and overweight group according to WGOC criteria. In regression of independent variables as %BF and FMI, %BF and FMI appeared statistically negatively significant relations with BMD in overweight and obesity, but %BF and FMI were inconsistent in same site. CONCLUSIONS Lean mass (LM) and LBMI could help to determinant of BMD, and %BF and FMI were adverse to BMD in overweight and obesity. Comparing with two criteria, we found the differences in fat-related parameters and BMD according to WHO criteria were more obvious than that according to WGOC criteria. We also found that %BF and FMI were useful to research the relationship between osteoporosis and obesity at the same time.

Abstract
This paper presents the effects of thermal grease on the electrical and thermal characteristics of GdBCO pancake coils, observed through charge-discharge, sudden discharge, over-current, and thermal quench testing. In charge-discharge and sudden discharge tests, a coil using thermal grease as an insulation material demonstrated faster charging/discharging rates compared to a coil without turn-to-turn insulation. In the case of over-current tests, the coil using thermal grease exhibited the highest electrical stability. Furthermore, thermal quench testing showed the coil employing thermal grease to possess superior thermal characteristics, with rapid cooling and low temperature rise. Overall, the use of thermal grease as an insulation material may be a potential solution to the problems observed with the existing insulation materials, possessing fast charging/discharging rates with superior thermal and electrical stabilities.

Abstract
This study quantified the uptake of five antibiotics (chlortetracycline, monensin, sulfamethazine, tylosin, and virginiamycin) by 11 vegetable crops in two different soils that were fertilized with raw versus composted turkey and hog manures or inorganic fertilizer. Almost all vegetables showed some uptake of antibiotics from manure treatments. However, statistical testing showed that except for a few isolated treatments the concentrations of all antibiotics in vegetable tissues were generally less than the limits of quantification. Further testing of the significant treatments showed that antibiotic concentrations in vegetables from many of these treatments were not significantly different than the corresponding concentrations from the fertilizer treatment (matrix effect). All five antibiotic concentrations in the studied vegetables were <10 μg kg(-1). On the basis of the standards for maximum residue levels in animal tissues and suggested maximum daily intake based on body weight, this concentration would not pose any health risk unless one is allergic to that particular antibiotic.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study was to assess patient outcome after discontinuation of alfuzosin treatment in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). METHODS This study included 200 BPH patients. Alpha-blockers were discontinued after 12 weeks of treatment when the International Prostatic Symptom Score (IPSS) was reduced to < 8 points, peak urine flow rate (Q(max)) was increased to ≥ 15 ml/s, the postvoiding residual (PVR) urine volume was ≤ 100 ml and the patient agreed to discontinue treatment. Urinary symptoms of the patients were assessed at 4, 8, 12 and 24 weeks after discontinuation of medication, and surveys were performed asking whether patients wanted to restart administration of medication. RESULTS Of 200 enrolled patients, 142 (71.00%) received 12 weeks of treatment with 10 mg of alfuzosin. The medication was discontinued in 58 of 142 patients (40.85%) because urinary symptoms had improved. Among these patients, follow-up observations were performed for 49 patients up to 24 weeks after treatment discontinued. Of these 49 patients, 28 (57.14%) showed correct urination without a need to restart treatment up to 24 weeks after the medication was discontinued. The discontinuation group demonstrated improved voiding symptoms, including Q(max) and PVR, relative to the re-administration group at baseline. Furthermore, the discontinuation group showed a smaller prostate volume than the re-administration group (p = 0.045). CONCLUSION When patients with BPH displayed symptomatic improvement upon treatment with alpha-blockers, the improvements were maintained in a select subpopulation of patients without the need to re-administer the alpha-blockers.

Abstract
Aim: To compare the improvement in erectile dysfunction (ED) and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) as well as safety of tadalafil dosed at 20 mg on-demand and 5 mg once daily among ED patients. Materials and methods: A total of 194 ED patients visited between March 2010 and June 2011 were recruited. Out of 194 individuals, 168 (86.6%) met inclusion criteria after completing the two-week screening period (V0). The Patients were randomly allocated into two groups: (i) 20 mg of tadalafil as needed (Group 1: n = 84, 50.0%) and (ii) 5 mg of tadalafil once daily (Group 2: n = 84, 50.0%). Blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR) and the five-item version of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) were assessed immediately before initiation of treatment (V1) and after four (V2) and twelve weeks of treatment (V3). In men with an IPSS of ≥ 8 at V1, IPSS, maximal flow rate (Qmax) and post-void residual volume (PVR) were also assessed. Results: Of the 168 patients, 134 (79.8%; Group 1: n = 68, 81.0%; Group 2: n = 66, 78.6%) patients completed the trial. IIEF-5 improved in both groups, and the mean change was larger in Group 2 at V3 (4.9 ± 4.2 vs. 6.5 ± 4.5; p = 0.032) Similarly, though IPSS (with ≥ 8, n = 88, 65.7%; Group 1: n = 44, 64.7%; Group 2: n = 44, 66.7%) improved in both groups, the mean change was larger in Group 2 at V3 (-2.8 ± 4.3 vs. -4.8 ± 4.1; p = 0.026). Qmax and PVR did not differ significantly in either group. Conclusions: Once daily tadalafil was more efficacious in treating both ED and LUTS than on-demand dosing. However, no differences were observed between the two dosing schedules with regard to the improvement in LUTS when stratified by improvement in ED. The side effects were insignificant for both dosing schedules.

Abstract
AIMS To develop a new instrument of great versatility for recovering micro-organisms from all types of food samples and to compare the effects with existing sample preparation methods. METHODS AND RESULTS To detach micro-organisms from large-size unbroken food samples such as apples, carrots, potatoes and tomatoes without preprocessing, the Spindle apparatus was newly developed. The Spindle was used to effectively detach micro-organisms from large-size samples. In a comparative study involving 51 food samples, treatment with the Spindle and Stomacher showed that recovery of total aerobic micro-organisms (naturally occurring mesophilic microflora) and foodborne pathogens (from samples inoculated with Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella Typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes) for both methods was highly correlated (R² = 0·98). Furthermore, diluents treated by the Spindle contained much less food debris than those treated by stomaching. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that Spindle is a novel, effective alternative method for detaching micro-organisms from food samples including four kinds of large-size samples without the need for preprocessing. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF STUDY The Spindle might be used to widely detaching micro-organisms from all types of food samples for microbiological assay.

Abstract
To search for candidate control agents against Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida infections in aquaculture, one bacteriophage (phage), designated as PAS-1, was isolated from the sediment samples of the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) culture farm in Korea. The PAS-1 was morphologically classified as Myoviridae and possessed approximately 48 kb of double-strand genomic DNA. The phage showed broad host ranges to other subspecies of A. salmonicida as well as A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida including antibiotic-resistant strains. Its latent period and burst size were estimated to be approximately 40 min and 116.7 PFU/cell, respectively. Furthermore, genomic and structural proteomic analysis of PAS-1 revealed that the phage was closely related to other Myoviridae phages infecting enterobacteria or Aeromonas species. The bacteriolytic activity of phage PAS-1 was evaluated using three subspecies of A. salmonicida strain at different doses of multiplicity of infection, and the results proved to be efficient for the reduction of bacterial growth. Based on these results, PAS-1 could be considered as a novel Aeromonas phage and might have potentiality to reduce the impacts of A. salmonicida infections in aquaculture.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate whether a small dose of midazolam and lessening the propofol dosage could prevent cardiovascular change at tracheal intubation for induction in aged patients. METHODS Eighty patients over 65 years (ASA physical status 1, 2) scheduled for elective surgery received general anesthesia with remifentanil and propofol or midazolam. Patients in group P (n = 40) were induced with 0.9% NaCl 0.03 ml/kg, propofol 1. 2 mg/kg and remifentanil. Patients in group MP (n = 40) were induced with midazolam 0.03 mg/kg, propofol 0.8 mg/kg and remifentanil. The time taken to reach loss of consciousness (LOC) and the value of bispectral index score (BIS) at LOC were recorded. After LOC, 0.8 mg/kg of rocuronium was given and tracheal intubation was performed. The mean blood pressure (MBP) and heart rate (HR) were recorded before induction as the base value, before intubation, immediately post-intubation and 3 minutes after intubation. RESULTS Compared with the base values, MBP at before intubation and 3 minutes after intubation was significantly decreased in group P and group MP (P < 0.05). Compared with group P, the decrease of MBP was significantly less at before intubation, immediately after intubation and 3 minutes after intubation in group MP (P < 0.05). The time taken to reach LOC was significantly decreased in group MP compared with that in group P (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences of HR at any time between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS Co-induction with midazolam and propofol could prevent a marked BP decrease at tracheal intubation for induction in aged patients.

Abstract
We synthesized the vertical-structured LED (VLED) using nano-scaled Pt between p-type GaN and Ag-based reflector. The metallization scheme on p-type GaN for high reflectance and low was the nano-scaled Pt/Ag/Ni/Au. Nano-scaled Pt (5 A) on Ag/Ni/Au exhibited reasonably high reflectance of 86.2% at the wavelength of 460 nm due to high transmittance of light through nano-scaled Pt (5 A) onto Ag layer. Ohmic behavior of contact metal, Pt/Ag/Ni/Au, to p-type GaN was achieved using surface treatments of p-type GaN prior to the deposition of contact metals and the specific contact resistance was observed with decreasing Pt thickness of 5 A, resulting in 1.5 x 10(-4) ohms cm2. Forward voltages of Pt (5 A)/Ag/Ni contact to p-type GaN showed 4.19 V with the current injection of 350 mA. Output voltages with various thickness of Pt showed the highest value at the smallest thickness of Pt due to its high transmittance of light onto Ag, leading to high reflectance. Our results propose that nano-scaled Pt/Ag/Ni could act as a promising contact metal to p-type GaN for improving the performance of VLEDs.

Abstract
Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder of branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) metabolism caused by dysfunction of the multienzyme branched-chain alpha-ketoacid dehydrogenase (BCKDH) complex. Although a few cases of MSUD have been reported in the Korean population, the genetic background of MSUD is not well understood. In this study, we investigated three newborn males who were diagnosed with MSUD using a standard newborn screening test and amino acid analysis. We screened all coding regions of the BCKDHA, BCKDHB and DBT genes for abnormalities using direct sequencing. Changes in these genes are associated with MSUD. For one patient with complex deletion/duplication mutations, we also performed TOPO TA cloning sequencing. Amino acid analysis showed elevated levels of all branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) in all patients. Three patients were either homozygous or compound heterozygous for the BCKDHA mutations. Patient 1 was homozygous for c.1036C>T (p.R346C); patient 2 was heterozygous, with c.632C>T (p.T211M) and c.659C>T (p.A220V); and patient 3 had c.1204_1209dupAAACCC (p.L402_P403dup) and c.1280_1282delTGG (p.L427_A428delinsP). Among these mutations, c.1036C>T, c.632C>T, c.1204_1209dup and c.1280_1282del were novel. These patients had no mutations in either the BCKDHB or the DBT gene. Although this study included only three patients, the five different mutations in these patients may indicate mutational heterogeneity in Korean patients with MSUD. In addition, the BCHDHA gene may present a primary target for clinical genetic analysis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of genetically confirmed MSUD in Korea.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Klebsiella pneumoniae is one of the organisms most commonly isolated from pyogenic liver abscesses in Asian populations. We compared CT findings in liver abscesses caused by K. pneumoniae with those caused by other bacterial pathogens. METHODS Of 214 patients with liver abscesses examined over a 5 year period, 129 patients with positive blood or aspirate cultures were enrolled. The patients were divided into two groups: the K. pneumoniae monomicrobial liver abscess (KLA) group (n = 59) and the non-K. pneumoniae monomicrobial or polymicrobial liver abscess (non-KLA) group (n = 70). Two radiologists blinded to the culture results evaluated the CT images, recording the number, size, location and configuration of abscesses, the thickness of the abscess wall, the pattern of rim enhancement, septal enhancement, the double target sign, internal necrotic debris, internal gas bubbles and underlying biliary disease. The presence of diabetes and metastatic infection was also compared between groups. Statistical analyses were performed using univariate (Student's t-test and χ(2) test) and multivariate analyses. RESULTS Multivariate analysis showed that a thin wall, necrotic debris, metastatic infection and the absence of underlying biliary disease were the most significant predictors of KLA. When three of the four criteria were used in combination, a specificity of 98.6% was achieved for the diagnosis of KLA. CONCLUSION A thin-walled abscess, internal necrotic debris, the presence of metastatic infection and the absence of underlying biliary disease may be useful CT findings in the early diagnosis of K. pneumoniae liver abscesses.

Abstract
AIMS The efficiency of eight enrichment broths for the selective isolation of Campylobacter jejuni was compared to identify an optimal enrichment broth. METHODS AND RESULTS Brucella-FBP, Preston, Doyle and Roman, modified CCD (mCCD), Park and Sanders, Bolton, Hunt and Radle and Hunt broths were compared for their recovery of (i) Camp. jejuni in suspension, (ii) Camp. jejuni from inoculated ground pork, (iii) heat-injured Camp. jejuni (55 degrees C for 20 min) in suspension and (iv) heat-injured Camp. jejuni from inoculated ground pork. Hunt broth and Bolton broth showed the highest and most rapid enrichment efficacy for the cell suspensions and ground pork, respectively. Preston, Park and Sanders and mCCD broths had relatively high enrichment efficiencies, while Brucella-FBP broth was significantly inferior to the other broths (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Cell recovery from the eight enrichment broths was dependent on the sample type and the state of the cells. The use of the appropriate broth is important for the rapid and efficacious enrichment of Camp. jejuni. In particular, heat-injured Camp. jejuni require a longer cultivation time and a suitable enrichment broth. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The results from the present study provide information for selecting the most appropriate enrichment broth for Camp. jejuni and may contribute to improved detection methods for the organism.
