Improved energy recovery from yard waste by water-starved hydrothermal treatment: Effects of process water and pressure

This study investigated the feasibility of a high-loading process with less water consumption for the valorization of wet biomass waste through hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) with and without N2 pressurization from the views of water saving, carbon utilization, and energy recovery. The results revealed that reducing the liquid-to-solid ratio from 10 to 2.5 significantly improved carbon storage in hydrochar due to preferential carbon sequestration as the solid phase (59.9%) instead of being lost in the liquid phase (∼10%). The pressurized HTC process resulted in a higher stability hydrochar through the devolatilization of secondary char that was less stable, yet resulted in ∼10% 15% more carbon transformation to the gas phase. A cost-benefit analysis further demonstrated the potential of the high-loading HTC process for enhancing energy recovery while minimizing energy consumption during hydrochar production from high-moisture yard waste.

Nanoparticles modulate heavy-metal and arsenic stress in food crops: Hormesis for food security/safety and public health

Heavy metal and arsenic (HM-As) contamination at the soil-food crop interface is a threat to food security/safety and public health worldwide. The potential ecotoxicological effects of HM-As on food crops can perturb normal physiological, biochemical, and molecular processes. To protect food safety and human health, nanoparticles (NPs) can be applied to seed priming and soil amendment, as 'manifestation of hormesis' to modulate HM-As-induced oxidative stress in edible crops. This review provides a comprehensive overview of NPs-mediated alleviation of HM-As stress in food crops and resulting hormetic effects. The underlying biochemical and molecular mechanisms in the amelioration of HM-As-induced oxidative stress is delineated by covering the various aspects of the interaction of NPs (e.g., magnetic particles, silicon, metal oxides, selenium, and carbon nanotubes) with plant microbes, phytohormone, signaling molecules, and plant-growth bioregulators (e.g., salicylic acid and melatonin). With biotechnical advances (such as clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) gene editing and omics), the efficacy of NPs and associated hormesis has been augmented to produce "pollution-safe designer cultivars" in HM-As-stressed agriculture systems. Future research into nanoscale technological innovations should thus be directed toward achieving food security, sustainable development goals, and human well-being, with the aid of HM-As stress resilient food crops.

Carbon dioxide-assisted thermochemical conversion of magnetically harvested harmful algae into syngas and metal biochar

With rising of harmful algae blooming and toxin exposure, practical utilization of harmful algae has been developed. This work aimed to magnetically harvest Microcystis aeruginosa (MA) using iron oxides and investigate the feasibility of algae/iron oxides mixture as feedstock in pyrolytic platform to produce syngas and metal biochar. Carbon dioxide (CO2) was used as a feeding gas to enhance the production efficiency of syngas and also functioned pH controller for better MA harvesting and toxin removal. CO2 support brought multiple benefits: magnetite (Fe3O4) and maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) recovered MA in a relatively short period of time (∼1 min), the recovered biomass generated 34-fold increased carbon monoxide, and metal biochar adsorbed higher amount of toxin from MA (2.8-fold). Pyrolytic utilization of harmful algae supported by CO2 and iron oxides could be one of promising techniques for evolution of metal biochar to remove toxin, while efficiently recover biomass and enhance syngas production.

Reactive cutaneous capillary endothelial proliferation predicted the efficacy of camrelizumab in patients with recurrent/metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

BACKGROUND

Reactive cutaneous capillary endothelial proliferation (RCCEP), a special adverse event (AE) only observed in patients treated with camrelizumab, was reported to be correlated with the efficacy of camrelizumab in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma. This study to analyze the possible correlation between the occurrence of RCCEP and efficacy of camrelizumab in patients with recurrent/metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (R/M HNSCC).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

In this study, we retrospectively analyzed the efficacy and RCCEP occurrence of camrelizumab in 58 patients with R/M HNSCC in the Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital affiliated to Shanghai JiaoTong University School of Medicine between January 2019 and June 2022. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to assess the correlation between the occurrence of RCCEP and the survival of enrolled patients, and COX multifactor analysis was adopted to evaluate associated factors that affected the efficacy of camrelizumab immunotherapy.

RESULTS

A significant correlation between the incidence of RCCEP and a higher objective response rate was observed in this study (p=0.008). The occurrence of RCCEP was associated with better median overall survival (17.0 months vs. 8.7 months, p<0.0001, HR=5.944, 95% CI:2.097-16.84) and better median progression-free survival (15.1 months vs. 4.0 months, p<0.0001, HR=4.329,95% CI:1.683-11.13). In COX multifactor analysis, RCCEP occurrence was also an independent prognostic factor affecting OS and PFS in patients with R/M HNSCC.

CONCLUSIONS

The occurrence of RCCEP can show a better prognosis, it could be used as a clinical biomarker to predict the efficacy of camrelizumab treatment.

Radiation Oncology Practice Changes during the COVID-19 Pandemic

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

The purpose of this study was to characterize the effects of institutional policies routine SARS-CoV-2 testing before treatment starts with mandatory quarantine periods for COVID-positive patients during the first year of the COVID19 pandemic across radiation oncology sections at our tertiary cancer center.

MATERIALS/METHODS

Electronic medical databases were queried to identify all patients treated with curative intent at a large urban cancer center and regional satellites a year prior to the pandemic (02/11/19-12/30/19; pre-pandemic) and the first year of the pandemic (03/11/20-12/30/20; post-pandemic). New treatment starts were filtered for those undergoing treatment under a single ICD-10 diagnosis and the first treatment in each time period for each patient. Chi-square tests were used for categorical variables, and the t-test was used for continuous variables to correlate differences in demographic and clinical factors before and during the pandemic.

RESULTS

The total number of new treatment starts were similar between the pre-pandemic (2,218 patients) and post-pandemic (2,130 patients) periods, but there was a 26% decrease in treatments in April 2020 compared to April 2019 and a 40% increase in treatments in November 2020 compared to November 2019. Post-pandemic patients had higher minimum Charlson Comorbidity Index scores (mean 46.0 vs 42.6, P = 0.0013) and were younger (62.8 yo vs 64.3 yo, P = 0.0001). The proportion of patients being treated from the same state as our institution was higher in the post-pandemic period compared to pre-pandemic (77.8% vs 72.43%, P = 0.0259). Distribution of treatments across department disease-site sections were significantly different (P<0.0001), with the proportion of patients treated by the Breast service having increased by 22% whereas the metropolitan area regional satellites experienced a 18% reduction. There were no statistically significant differences amongst pre- and post-pandemic patients with respect to race, marital status, or smoking status. Post-pandemic patients had less total radiation-related clinical visits (mean 24.8 vs 28.6, P<0.0001), lower administered dose (4329 cGy vs 4533 cGy, P<0.0001), and lower radiation fraction count (17 vs 19, P<0.0001). There was no statistically significant difference in the duration between CT simulation and treatment start, but post-pandemic patients had shorter duration of elapsed days during treatment (27 days vs 29 days, P = 0.0001). A disease-site-specific analysis demonstrated that these differences were most pronounced in patients treated for breast cancer.

CONCLUSION

In the first year of the COVID19 pandemic, our institution saw a dynamic change in the number of new radiation treatments. Additional analyses across individual disease-specific services may reveal insight into dose, fractionation, and technique, which may account for the observed differences.

Phase II study of a trastuzumab biosimilar in combination with paclitaxel for HER2-positive recurrent or metastatic urothelial carcinoma: KCSG GU18-18

BACKGROUND

Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) is a widely explored therapeutic target in solid tumors. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of trastuzumab-pkrb, a biosimilar of trastuzumab, in combination with paclitaxel, in HER2-positive recurrent or metastatic urothelial carcinoma (UC).

PATIENTS AND METHODS

We enrolled 27 patients; they were administered a loading dose of 8 mg/kg trastuzumab-pkrb on day 1, followed by 6 mg/kg and 175 mg/m2 paclitaxel on day 1 every 3 weeks, intravenously. All patients received six cycles of the combination treatment and continued to receive trastuzumab-pkrb maintenance until disease progression, unacceptable toxicity, or for up to 2 years. HER2 positivity (based on immunohistochemistry analysis) was determined according to the 2013 American Society of Clinical Oncology /College of American Pathologists HER2 testing guidelines. The primary endpoint was objective response rate (ORR); the secondary endpoints were overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and safety.

RESULTS

Twenty-six patients were evaluated via primary endpoint analysis. The ORR was 48.1% (1 complete and 12 partial responses) and the duration of response was 6.9 months [95% confidence interval (CI) 4.4-9.3 months]. With a median follow-up of 10.5 months, the median PFS and OS were 8.4 months (95% CI 6.2-8.8 months) and 13.5 months (95% CI 9.8 months-not reached), respectively. The most common treatment-related adverse event (TRAE) of any grade was peripheral neuropathy (88.9%). The most common grade 3/4 TRAEs were neutropenia (25.9%), thrombocytopenia (7.4%), and anemia (7.4%).

CONCLUSIONS

Trastuzumab-pkrb plus paclitaxel demonstrates promising efficacy with manageable toxicity profiles in patients with HER2-positive recurrent or metastatic UC.

[Pathological classification of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma and comparative analysis with peritoneal carcinomatosis]

Objective: To analyze the pathological classification of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPeM) and screen the immunohistochemical markers that can distinguish MPeM from peritoneal metastatic carcinoma (PC) . Methods: In June 2020, the pathological results of peritoneal biopsy of 158 MPeM and 138 PC patients from Cangzhou Central Hospital, Cangzhou People's Hospital, and Cangzhou Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine from May 2011 to July 2019 were retrospectively analyzed, and the pathological classifications of MPeM in Cangzhou were summarized. Immunohistochemical markers of MPeM and PC patients were analyzed, and receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC curve) was drawn for differential diagnosis of MPeM and PC. Results: There were 55 male and 103 female MPeM patients in Cangzhou, with an average age of 57.1 years old. The asbestos exposure rate was 91.14% (144/158). The most common pathological classifications were cutaneous type, accounting for 90.51% (143/158). There were significant differences in the expression of calreticulum protein, CK5/6, vimentin, D2-40, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and tail type homologous nuclear gene transcription factor 2 (CDX-2) between MPeM and PC (P<0.05). Among the 6 positive markers, the sensitivity of calreticulum protein was the highest (0.905) and CEA was the lowest (0.428) . Conclusion: Calreticulum protein, CK5/6, vimentin, D2-40, CEA and CDX-2 may be used as specific markers to distinguish the diagnosis of MPeM from PC.

Practical approach of As(V) adsorption by fabricating biochar with low basicity from FeCl3 and lignin

One of the main challenges of biochar application for environmental cleanup is rise of pH in water or soil due to high ash and alkali metal contents in the biochar. While this intrinsic property of biochar is advantageous in alleviating soil and water acidity, it severely impairs the affinity of biochar toward anionic contaminants such as arsenic. This study explored a technical approach that can reduce the basicity of lignin-based biochar by utilizing FeCl₃ during production of biochar. Three types of biochar were produced by co-pyrolyzing feedstock composed of different combinations of lignin, red mud (RM), and FeCl₃, and the produced biochar samples were applied to adsorption of As(V). The biochar samples commonly possessed porous carbon structure embedded with magnetite (Fe₃O₄) particles. The addition of FeCl₃ in the pyrolysis feedstock had a notable effect on reducing basicity of the biochar to yield significantly lower solution pH values than the biochar produced without FeCl₃ addition. The extent of As(V) removal was also closely related to the final solution pH and the greatest As(V) removal (>77.6%) was observed for the biochar produced from co-pyrolysis of lignin, RM, and FeCl₃. The results of adsorption kinetics and isotherm experiments, along with x-ray spectroscopy (XPS), strongly suggested adsorption of As(V) occurred via specific chemical reaction (chemisorption) between As(V) and Fe-O functional groups on magnetite. Thus, the overall results suggest the use of FeCl₃ is a feasible practical approach to control the intrinsic pH of biochar and impart additional functionality that enables effective treatment of As(V).

Chitin and crawfish shell biochar composite decreased heavy metal bioavailability and shifted rhizosphere bacterial community in an arsenic/lead co-contaminated soil

Sustainable management of ever-increasing organic biowaste and arable soil contamination by potentially toxic elements are of concern from both environmental and agricultural perspectives. To tackle the waste issue of crawfish shells and simultaneously minimize the threat of arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) to human health, a pot trial was conducted using chitin (CT), crawfish shell biochar (CSB), crawfish shell powder (CSP), and CT-CSB composite to compare their remediation efficiencies in As/Pb co-contaminated soil. Results demonstrated that addition of all amendments decreased Pb bioavailability, with the greatest effect observed for the CT-CSB treatment. Application of CSP and CSB increased the soil available As concentration, while significant decreases were observed in the CT and CT-CSB treatments. Meanwhile, CT addition was the most effective in enhancing the soil enzyme activities including acid phosphatase, α-glucosidase, N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase, and cellobiohydrolase, whereas CSB-containing treatments suppressed the activities of most enzymes. The amendments altered the bacterial abundance and composition in soil. For instance, compared to the control, all treatments increased Chitinophagaceae abundance by 2.6-4.7%. The relative abundance of Comamonadaceae decreased by 1.6% in the CSB treatment, while 2.1% increase of Comamonadaceae was noted in the CT-CSB treatment. Redundancy and correlation analyses (at the family level) indicated that the changes in bacterial community structure were linked to bulk density, water content, and As/Pb availability of soils. Partial least squares path modeling further indicated that soil chemical property (i.e., pH, dissolved organic carbon, and cation exchange capacity) was the strongest predictor of As/Pb availability in soils following amendment application. Overall, CT-CSB could be a potentially effective amendment for simultaneously immobilizing As and Pb and restoring soil ecological functions in contaminated arable soils.

Triplex metallohelices have enantiomer-dependent mechanisms of action in colon cancer cells

Self-assembled enantiomers of an asymmetric di-iron metallohelix differ in their antiproliferative activities against HCT116 colon cancer cells such that the compound with Λ-helicity at the metals becomes more potent than the Δ compound with increasing exposure time. From concentration- and temperature-dependent ⁵⁷Fe isotopic labelling studies of cellular accumulation we postulate that while the more potent Λ enantiomer undergoes carrier-mediated efflux, for Δ the process is principally equilibrative. Cell fractionation studies demonstrate that both enantiomers localise in a similar fashion; compound is observed mostly within the cytoskeleton and/or genomic DNA, with significant amounts also found in the nucleus and membrane, but with negligible concentration in the cytosol. Cell cycle analyses using flow cytometry reveal that the Δ enantiomer induces mild arrest in the G₁ phase, while Λ causes a very large dose-dependent increase in the G₂/M population at a concentration significantly below the relevant IC₅₀. Correspondingly, G₂-M checkpoint failure as a result of Λ-metallohelix binding to DNA is shown to be feasible by linear dichroism studies, which indicate, in contrast to the Δ compound, a quite specific mode of binding, probably in the major groove. Further, spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) failure, which could also be responsible for the observed G₂/M arrest, is established as a feasible mechanism for the Λ helix via drug combination (synergy) studies and the discovery of tubulin and actin inhibition. Here, while the Λ compound stabilizes F-actin and induces a distinct change in tubulin architecture of HCT116 cells, Δ promotes depolymerization and more subtle changes in microtubule and actin networks.

Applications of agricultural residue biochars to removal of toxic gases emitted from chemical plants: A review

Crop residues are representative agricultural waste materials, massively generated in the world. However, a large fraction of them is currently being wasted, though they have a high potential to be used as a value-added carbon-rich material. Also, the applications of carbon-rich materials from agricultural waste to industries can have economic benefit because waste-derived carbon materials are considered inexpensive waste materials. In this review, valorization methods for crop residues as carbon-rich materials (i.e., biochars) and their applications to industrial toxic gas removals are discussed. Applications of crop residue biochars to toxic gas removal can have significant environmental benefits and economic feasibility. As such, this review discussed the technical advantages of the use of crop residue biochars as adsorbents for hazardous gaseous pollutants and greenhouse gases (GHGs) stemmed from combustion of fossil fuels and the different refinery processes. Also, the practical benefits from the activation methods in line with the biochar properties were comprehensively discussed. The relationships between the physico-chemical properties of biochars and the removal mechanisms of gaseous pollutants (H₂S, SO₂, Hg⁰, and CO₂) on biochars were also highlighted in this review study. Porosity controls using physical and chemical activations along with the addition of specific functional groups and metals on biochars have significantly contributed to the enhancement of flue gas adsorption. The adsorption capacity of biochar for each toxic chemical was in the range of 46-76 mg g^-1 for H₂S, 40-182 mg g^-1 for SO₂, 80-952 μg g^-1 for Hg⁰, and 82-308 mg g^-1 CO₂, respectively. This helps to find suitable activation methods for adsorption of the target pollutants. In the last part, the benefits from the use of biochars and the research directions were prospectively provided to make crop residue biochars more practical materials in adsorption of pollutant gases.

Adsorption of potentially harmful elements by metal-biochar prepared via Co-pyrolysis of coffee grounds and Nano Fe(III) oxides

Nano Fe(III) oxide (FO) was used as an amendment material in CO₂-assisted pyrolysis of spent coffee grounds (SCG) and its impacts on the syngas (H₂ & CO) generation and biochar adsorptive properties were investigated. Amendment of FO led to 153 and 682% increase of H₂ and CO in pyrolytic process of SCG, respectively, which is deemed to arise from enhanced thermal cracking of hydrocarbons and oxygen transfer reaction mediated by FO. Incorporation of FO successfully created porous structure in the produced biochar. The adsorption tests revealed that the biochar exhibited bi-functional capability to remove both positively charged Cd(II) and Ni(II), and negatively charged Sb(V). The adsorption of Cd(II) and Ni(II) was hardly deteriorated in the multiple adsorption cycles, and the adsorption of Sb(V) was further enhanced through formation of surface ternary complexes. The overall results demonstrated nano Fe(III) oxide is a promising amendment material in CO₂-assisted pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass for enhancing syngas generation and producing functional biochar.

Review on distribution, fate, and management of potentially toxic elements in incinerated medical wastes

Medical wastes include all solid and liquid wastes that are produced during the treatment, diagnosis, and immunisation of animals and humans. A significant proportion of medical waste is infectious, hazardous, radioactive, and contains potentially toxic elements (PTEs) (i.e., heavy metal (loids)). PTEs, including arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg), are mostly present in plastic, syringes, rubber, adhesive plaster, battery wastes of medical facilities in elemental form, as well as oxides, chlorides, and sulfates. Incineration and sterilisation are the most common technologies adopted for the safe management and disposal of medical wastes, which are primarily aimed at eliminating deadly pathogens. The ash materials derived from the incineration of hazardous medical wastes are generally disposed of in landfills after the solidification/stabilisation (S/S) process. In contrast, the ash materials derived from nonhazardous wastes are applied to the soil as a source of nutrients and soil amendment. The release of PTEs from medical waste ash material from landfill sites and soil application can result in ecotoxicity. The present study is a review paper that aims to critically review the dynamisms of PTEs in various environmental media after medical waste disposal, the environmental and health implications of their poor management, and the common misconceptions regarding medical waste.

Iron-modified phosphorus- and silicon-based biochars exhibited various influences on arsenic, cadmium, and lead accumulation in rice and enzyme activities in a paddy soil

Contamination of paddy soils with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) has become a severe environmental issue. Application of functionalized biochar for rice cultivation has been proposed as an effective means to reduce environmental risks of these PTEs in paddy soils. This work was undertaken to seek the positive effects of a rice husk-derived silicon (Si)-rich biochar (Si-BC) and a pig carcass-derived phosphorus (P)-rich biochar (P-BC), as well as their Fe-modified biochars (Fe-Si-BC and Fe-P-BC) on the enzyme activity and PTE availability in an As-Cd-Pb-contaminated soil. A rice cultivation pot trial was conducted using these functionalized biochars as soil amendments for the alleviation of PTE accumulation in rice plants. Results showed that Si-BC decreased the concentrations of As in rice grain and straw by 59.4 % and 61.4 %, respectively, while Fe-Si-BC significantly (P < 0.05) enhanced plant growth, increasing grain yield (by 38.6 %). Fe-Si-BC significantly (P < 0.05) elevated Cd and Pb accumulation in rice plants. P-BC enhanced the activities of dehydrogenase, catalase, and urease, and reduced grain-Pb and straw-Pb by 49.3 % and 43.2 %, respectively. However, Fe-P-BC reduced plant-As in rice grain and straw by 12.2 % and 51.2 %, respectively, but increased plant-Cd and plant-Pb. Thus, Fe-modified Si- and P-rich biochars could remediate paddy soils contaminated with As, and enhance the yield and quality of rice. Application of pristine P-rich biochar could also be a promising strategy to remediate the Pb-contaminated paddy soils and limit Pb accumulation in rice.

Multiple-functionalized biochar affects rice yield and quality via regulating arsenic and lead redistribution and bacterial community structure in soils under different hydrological conditions

Rice grown in soils contaminated with arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) can cause lower rice yield and quality due to the toxic stress. Herein, we examined the role of functionalized biochars (raw phosphorus (P)-rich (PBC) and iron (Fe)-modified P-rich (FePBC)) coupled with different irrigation regimes (continuously flooded (CF) and intermittently flooded (IF)) in affecting rice yield and accumulation of As and Pb in rice grain. Results showed that FePBC increased the rice yield under both CF (47.4%) and IF (19.6%) conditions, compared to the controls. Grain As concentration was higher under CF (1.94-2.42 mg kg^-1) than IF conditions (1.56-2.31 mg kg^-1), whereas the concentration of grain Pb was higher under IF (0.10-0.76 mg kg^-1) than CF (0.12-0.48 mg kg^-1) conditions. Application of PBC reduced grain Pb by 60.1% under CF conditions, while FePBC reduced grain As by 12.2% under IF conditions, and increased grain Pb by 2.9 and 6.6 times under CF and IF conditions, respectively, compared to the controls. Therefore, application of the multiple-functionalized biochar can be a promising strategy for increasing rice yield and reducing the accumulation of As in rice grain, particularly under IF conditions, whereas it is inapplicable for remediation of paddy soils contaminated with Pb.

Search for the Majorana Nature of Neutrinos in the Inverted Mass Ordering Region with KamLAND-Zen

The KamLAND-Zen experiment has provided stringent constraints on the neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay half-life in ^{136}Xe using a xenon-loaded liquid scintillator. We report an improved search using an upgraded detector with almost double the amount of xenon and an ultralow radioactivity container, corresponding to an exposure of 970 kg yr of ^{136}Xe. These new data provide valuable insight into backgrounds, especially from cosmic muon spallation of xenon, and have required the use of novel background rejection techniques. We obtain a lower limit for the 0νββ decay half-life of T_{1/2}^{0ν}>2.3×10^{26}  yr at 90% C.L., corresponding to upper limits on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of 36-156 meV using commonly adopted nuclear matrix element calculations.

Compact high repetition rate Thomson parabola ion spectrometer

We present the development of a compact Thomson parabola ion spectrometer capable of characterizing the energy spectra of various ion species of multi-MeV ion beams from >10²⁰W/cm² laser produced plasmas at rates commensurate with the highest available from any of the current and near-future PW-class laser facilities. This diagnostic makes use of a polyvinyl toluene based fast plastic scintillator (EJ-260), and the emitted light is collected using an optical imaging system coupled to a thermoelectrically cooled scientific complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor camera. This offers a robust solution for data acquisition at a high repetition rate, while avoiding the added complications and nonlinearities of micro-channel plate based systems. Different ion energy ranges can be probed using a modular magnet setup, a variable electric field, and a varying drift-distance. We have demonstrated operation and data collection with this system at up to 0.2 Hz from plasmas created by irradiating a solid target, limited only by the targeting system. With the appropriate software, on-the-fly ion spectral analysis will be possible, enabling real-time experimental control at multi-Hz repetition rates.

Plastic wastes in the time of COVID-19: Their environmental hazards and implications for sustainable energy resilience and circular bio-economies

The global scope of pollution from plastic waste is a well-known phenomenon associated with trade, mass consumption, and disposal of plastic products (e.g., personal protective equipment (PPE), viral test kits, and vacuum-packaged food). Recently, the scale of the problem has been exacerbated by increases in indoor livelihood activities during lockdowns imposed in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The present study describes the effects of increased plastic waste on environmental footprint and human health. Further, the technological/regulatory options and life cycle assessment (LCA) approach for sustainable plastic waste management are critically dealt in terms of their implications on energy resilience and circular economy. The abrupt increase in health-care waste during pandemic has been worsening environmental quality to undermine the sustainability in general. In addition, weathered plastic particles from PPE along with microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) can all adsorb chemical and microbial contaminants to pose a risk to ecosystems, biota, occupational safety, and human health. PPE-derived plastic pollution during the pandemic also jeopardizes sustainable development goals, energy resilience, and climate control measures. However, it is revealed that the pandemic can be regarded as an opportunity for explicit LCA to better address the problems associated with environmental footprints of plastic waste and to focus on sustainable management technologies such as circular bio-economies, biorefineries, and thermal gasification. Future researches in the energy-efficient clean technologies and circular bio-economies (or biorefineries) in concert with a "nexus" framework are expected to help reduce plastic waste into desirable directions.

A flexible proton beam imaging energy spectrometer (PROBIES) for high repetition rate or single-shot high energy density (HED) experiments (invited)

The PROBIES diagnostic is a new, highly flexible, imaging and energy spectrometer designed for laser-accelerated protons. The diagnostic can detect low-mode spatial variations in the proton beam profile while resolving multiple energies on a single detector or more. When a radiochromic film stack is employed for "single-shot mode," the energy resolution of the stack can be greatly increased while reducing the need for large numbers of films; for example, a recently deployed version allowed for 180 unique energy measurements spanning ∼3 to 75 MeV with <0.4 MeV resolution using just 20 films vs 180 for a comparable traditional film and filter stack. When utilized with a scintillator, the diagnostic can be run in high-rep-rate (>Hz rate) mode to recover nine proton energy bins. We also demonstrate a deep learning-based method to analyze data from synthetic PROBIES images with greater than 95% accuracy on sub-millisecond timescales and retrained with experimental data to analyze real-world images on sub-millisecond time-scales with comparable accuracy.

A novel cardiac arrest severity score for the early prediction of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury and in-hospital death

Background

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) outcomes are unsatisfactory despite postcardiac arrest care. Early prediction of prognoses might help stratify patients and provide tailored therapy.

Purpose

In this study, we derived and validated a novel scoring system to predict hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury (HIBI) and in-hospital death (IHD).

Methods

We retrospectively analysed Korean Hypothermia Network prospective registry data collected from in Korea between 2015 and 2018. Patients without neuroprognostication data were excluded, and the remaining patients were randomly divided into derivation and validation cohorts. HIBI was defined when at least one prognostication predicted a poor outcome. IHD meant all deaths regardless of cause. In the derivation cohort, stepwise multivariate logistic regression was conducted for HIBI and IHD scores, and model performance was assessed. We then classified patients into four categories and analysed associations between the categories and cerebral performance categories (CPCs) at hospital discharge. Finally, we validated our models in the internal validation cohort.

Results

Among 1373 patients, 240 were excluded, and 1133 were randomised into derivation (n=754) and validation cohorts (n=379). In the derivation cohort, 7 and 8 predictors were selected for HIBI (0–8) and IHD scores (0–11), respectively, and the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.85 (95% CI 0.82–0.87) and 0.80 (95% CI 0.77–0.82), respectively. Applying optimum cutoff values of ≥6 points for HIBI and ≥7 points for IHD, patients were classified as follows: HIBI (-)/IHD (-), Category 1 (n=424); HIBI (-)/IHD (+), Category 2 (n=100); HIBI (+)/IHD (-), Category 3 (n=21); and HIBI (+)/IHD (+), Category 4 (n=209). CPCs at discharge were significantly different in each category (p&lt;0.001). In the validation cohort, the model showed moderate discrimination (AUC 0.83, 95% CI 0.79–0.87 for HIBI and AUC 0.77, 95% CI 0.72–0.81 for IHD) with good calibration. Each category of the validation cohort showed a significant difference in discharge outcomes (p&lt;0.001) and a similar trend to the derivation cohort.

Conclusions

We presented a novel approach for assessing illness severity after OHCA. Although external prospective studies are warranted, risk stratification for HIBI and IHD could help provide OHCA patients with appropriate treatment.

Novel serum biomarkers for predicting prognosis in post cardiac arrest patients

Objective

To determine the clinical feasibility of novel serum biomarkers by comparing them with conventional serum biomarkers in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients treated with target temperature management (TTM).

Methods

This study was a prospective observational study conducted on OHCA patients who underwent TTM. We measured serum biomarker Neuron‑Specific Enolase (NSE), S-100B (S100 calcium-binding protein), Tau protein, Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP), Neurofilament Light Chain (NFL), and Ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase-L1 (UCH-L1) at 0, 24, 48, and 72 hours after return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). Conventional biomarkers include NSE and S-100B. The primary outcome was good neurologic outcome at 6 months after OHCA.

Results

A total of 100 patients were included in this study from August 2018 to May 2020. Among the included patients, 46 patients had good neurologic outcomes. As for the biomarker's AUC value measured immediately after ROSC, GFAP had the highest value (0.850), and among the values measured 24 hours after ROSC, S100B showed the highest value (0.901). The AUC values of biomarkers measured after 48 hours and 72 hours after ROSC, were the highest in NFL (0.921, 0.946). AUC values measured after 72 hours of ROSC showed higher values in novel biomarkers than in conventional biomarkers.

Conclusion

After 72 hours of ROSC, the Novel biomarkers showed a higher AUC value than the conventional biomarkers. Among them, NFL showed the highest AUC values than other biomarkers at 48 and 72 hours of ROSC.

Impacts of land uses on spatio-temporal variations of seasonal water quality in a regulated river basin, Huai River, China

Land use impacts from agriculture, industrialization, and human population should be considered in surface water quality management. In this study, we utilized an integrated statistical analysis approach mainly including a seasonal Mann-Kendall test, clustering analysis, self-organizing map, Boruta algorithm, and positive matrix factorization to the assessment of the interactions between land use types and water quality in a typical catchment in the Huai River Basin, China, over seven years (2012-2019). Spatially, water quality was clustered into three groups: upstream, midstream, and downstream/mainstream areas. The water quality of upstream sites was better than of mid-, down-, and mainstream. Temporally, water quality did not change significantly during the study period. However, the temporal variation in water quality of up-, down-, and mainstream areas was more stable than in the midstream. The interactions between land use types and water quality parameters at the sub-basin scale varied with seasons. Increasing forest/grassland areas could substantially improve the water quality during the wet season, while nutrients such as phosphorus from cropland and developed land was a driver for water quality deterioration in the dry season. Water area was not a significant factor influencing the variations of ammonia nitrogen (NH₃-N) and total phosphorus (TP) in the wet or dry season, due to the intensive dams and sluices in study area. The parameters TP, and total nitrogen (TN) were principally linked with agricultural sources in the wet and dry seasons. The parameters NH₃-N in the dry season, and chemical oxygen demand (COD_Cr) in the wet season were mainly associated with point source discharges. Agricultural source, and urban point source discharges were the main causes of water quality deterioration in the study area. Collectively, these results highlighted the impacts of land use types on variations of water quality parameters in the regulated basin.

The determining factors of sediment nutrient content and stoichiometry along profile depth in seasonal water

In the recent decades, the area of seasonal water (SEW) has substantially increased at the global scale. To evaluate nutrient dynamics in aquatic ecosystems, previous studies have analyzed the determining factors of sediment nutrient content and stoichiometry on whole sediment profiles without depth separation on SEW sites. Such a methodology assumes that SEW sediment is a uniform unit and its nutrient dynamics are regulated by the same mechanism at various depths (uniformity assumption). We tested this assumption using sediment samples from six depth increments of 154 sediment profiles (1 m depth) on SEW sites at Shengjin Lake in subtropical China. We measured sediment total nitrogen (STN), total phosphorus (STP), nutrient fractions, and the molar ratio of STN to STP (R_SNP), and investigated their determining factors at various depths. STN, STP, and R_SNP were averaged at 1.34 g/kg, 0.55 g/kg, and 5.43, respectively, and all gradually decreased with depth. STN was positively affected by moisture and flooding duration in all depth increments. Instead, the major determining factors of STP changed from particle size at 0-20 cm of depth to pH and electrical conductivity at 30-100 cm of depth. These vertical patterns have close connections with sediment nutrient fractions since sediment N fractions did not shift along profile depths (i.e., over 99 % of STN was organic N) but sediment P fractions did (the percentage of Fe-P and Al-P decreased by 6.25 % but those of Ca-P increased by 4.31 % along the sediment depth gradient). The major determining factors of R_SNP showed no obvious vertical patterns because they frequently varied along depth gradients. The results demonstrate that SEW sediment is not a uniform unit and the determining factors of nutrient dynamics change with depth. Our study highlights the importance of improved methodological reflection in studies addressing sediment nutrient dynamics on SEW sites.

A Multicentre Clinical Study of Sarcoma Personalised Treatment Using Patient-Derived Tumour Xenografts

AIMS

Medication for advanced sarcomas has not improved for three decades. Patient-derived tumour xenografts (PDTX) are a promising solution for developing new therapies and real-time personalised medicine because of their highly effective prediction of drug efficacy. However, there is a dearth of PDTX models for sarcomas due to the scarcity and heterogeneity of the disease.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A multicentre clinical collaborative study (ChiCTR-OOC-17013617) was carried out. Fresh patient tumour tissues via resection or biopsy were used for the PDTX set-up. The standard medical care chosen by the physician was given to the patient, in parallel with testing on multiple regimens. The outcomes of patients' responses and PDTX tests were compared. Comprehensive analyses were carried out to assess the clinical value of PDTX for the treatment of sarcomas. Living tissues from successfully engrafted cases were deposited into a repository.

RESULTS

Forty-two cases, including 36 bone sarcomas and six soft-tissue sarcomas, were enrolled; the overall engraftment rate was 73.8%. Histopathological examination showed a 100% consistency between primary tumours and tumour grafts. The engraftment rate was independent of age, gender and sampling methods, but was associated with subtypes of tumour. The outgrowth time of tumour grafts could be associated with prognosis. Major somatic mutations in tumour grafts occurred primarily in common tumour driver genes. Poor prognosis was associated with the KMT2C mutation. A drug efficacy test showed complete concordance between the PDTX model and patients' responses in 17 regimens.

CONCLUSION

PDTX is an ideal preclinical model for sarcomas because of its faithful preservation of the heterogeneity of the disease, a satisfactory engraftment rate and high accuracy in its prediction of drug efficacy.

Potentially toxic elements exposure biomonitoring in the elderly around the largest polymetallic rare earth ore mining and smelting area in China

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) can be released during mining operations and ore processing. The pollution and health risk related to PTEs in total suspended particulates (TSPs) around the largest polymetallic rare earth mining area (Bayan Obo) and smelting area (Baotou) in Inner Mongolia, China, were evaluated. PTEs in the hair of the elderly living in these two areas and a reference area (Hohhot) were also examined. Relationships between PTEs in TSPs and hair with categorical factors (location, gender, etc.) were also modeled. Multivariate statistical analyses were carried out to analyze the possible sources of the PTEs in TSPs. The bubble maps of the concentrations of PTEs indicated that high concentrations of PTEs were near the industrial area where smelting plants and power plants were located. In addition, health risks were assessed for adults in the mining and smelting area. The carcinogenic risk of Cr was high for residents in the study areas. Also, the residents were exposed to a non-carcinogenic risk of Ni. Significant mean value differences were observed between PTEs in the hair of the elderly in Baotou and Hohhot. Results of the linear regression model indicated that around 31 % of the Pb in hair could be explained by the linear regression model, it could be affected by Ni and Zn in TSPs, but location, gender, and sampling time showed no significant contribution. Age was not significantly associated with the PTEs levels in hair in Baotou and Bayan Obo. The results provide important scientific evidence for a better understanding of the effects of PTEs in TSPs in polymetallic ore mining and smelting areas.

Release and mobilization of Ni, Co, and Cr under dynamic redox changes in a geogenic contaminated soil: Assessing the potential risk in serpentine paddy environments

The release dynamics and mobilization of geogenic Ni, Co, and Cr in serpentine paddy soils under fluctuating redox conditions have not yet been well studied. Here we investigated the release dynamics of Cr, Co, and Ni and controlling factors (e.g., Fe, Mn, Mg, Cl^-, PO₄^3-, SO₄^2-, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC)) in a geogenic-contaminated serpentine soil under wide range of redox potential (E_H) changes. The effects of re-oxidation process have been also investigated. The soil was incubated for 28 days and E_H was controlled from oxidation (+200 mV) to reduction (-200 mV) and re-oxidation (+240 mV) using a microcosm setup in duplicates. The slurry pH increased, along with decreasing E_H. The average concentration of dissolved Co (17.1-23.6 μg L^-1) decreased under low E_H/high pH and vice versa. The average concentration of dissolved Cr decreased sharply from 624 μg L^-1 to 54.4 μg L^-1 with decreasing E_H from +200 mV to 0 mV and the associated increase of pH from 7.8 to 8.5; then, it was constant around 24.5 μg L^-1. Concentration of dissolved Ni was lower (73.5-84.6 μg L^-1) under high E_H at the first week of incubation; then, increased to 108.5 μg L^-1 under low E_H (-200 mV); thereafter, increased more at the end up to 124.5 μg L^-1 at high E_H (+240 mV), because of the pH decrease. A factor analysis identified that Cr and Co formed one group with Mn and Mg, while Ni was clustered together with Cl^-, DOC, and SO₄^2-. This indicates that the redox-induced release dynamic of Cr and Co was mainly governed by MnMg compounds, while the release of Ni was mainly affected by the aliphatic compounds of DOC and the redox chemistry of chlorides and sulfur in this soil. The re-oxidation increased the mobilization of Ni and Co and did not affect the release of Cr. These findings suggest that the redox-induced mobilization of geogenic Co, Ni, and Cr from soil to water in serpentine rice soils should be considered due to the high solubility and thus the associated bioavailability and potential environmental and human health risks, when such metal-enriched soils will be used for agricultural flood-dry cycle systems.

Abundance, spatial variation, and sources of rare earth elements in soils around ion-adsorbed rare earth mining areas

Rare earth elements (REEs) concentrated in soils have attracted increasing attention about their impact on soil health as emerging contaminants. However, the sources of REEs enriched in soils are diverse and need to be further investigated. Here, surface soil samples were collected from southern Jiangxi Province, China. REEs contents and soil physicochemical properties were determined, and cerium (Ce) and europium (Eu) anomalies were calculated. Moreover, we established a model to further identify the main sources of REEs accumulation in the studied soils. Results show that the abundance of soil REEs reveals larger spatial variation, suggesting spatially heterogeneous distribution of REEs. The median content of light REEs in soils (154.5 mg kg^-1) of the study area was higher than that of heavy REEs and yttrium (35.8 mg kg^-1). In addition, most of the soil samples present negative Ce anomalies and all the soil samples present negative Eu anomalies implying the combined effect of weathering and potential exogenous inputs on soil REEs. Positive matrix factorization modeling reveals that soil REEs content is primarily influenced by soil parent materials. Potential anthropogenic sources include mining-related leachate, traffic exhaust, and industrial dust. These results demonstrate that the identification of sources of soil REEs is an important starting point for targeted REEs sources management and regulation of excessive and potentially harmful REEs levels in the soil.

Ultra-compact x-ray spectrometer for high-repetition-rate laser-plasma experiments

We present in this work the development of an ultra-compact, multi-channel x-ray spectrometer (UCXS). This diagnostic has been specially built and adapted to perform at high-repetition-rate (>1 Hz) for high-intensity, short-pulse laser plasma experiments. X-ray filters of varying materials and thicknesses are chosen to provide spectral resolution up to ΔE ≈ 1 keV over the x-ray energy range of 1-30 keV. These filters are distributed over a total of 25 channels, where each x-ray filter is coupled to a single scintillator. The UCXS is designed to detect and resolve a large variety of laser-driven x-ray sources such as low energy bremsstrahlung emission, fluorescence, and betatron radiation (up to 30 keV). Preliminary results from commissioning experiments at the ABL laser facility at Colorado State University are provided.

Mitigation of hazardous toluene via ozone-catalyzed oxidation using MnOx/Sawdust biochar catalyst

This study investigated catalytic ozone oxidation using a sawdust char (SDW) catalyst to remove hazardous toluene emitted from the chemical industry. The catalyst properties were analyzed by proximate, ultimate, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, Fourier-transform infrared, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses. In addition, hydrogen-temperature programmed reduction experiments were conducted to analyze the catalyst properties. The specific area and formation of micropores of SDC were improved by applying KOH treatment. MnOx/SDC-K3 exhibited a higher toluene removal efficiency of 89.7% after 100 min than MnOx supported on activated carbon (MnOx/AC) with a removal efficiency of 6.6%. The higher (O_ads (adsorbed oxygen)+O_v(vacancy oxygen))/O_L (lattice oxygen) and Mn³⁺/Mn⁴⁺ ratios of MnOx/SDC-K3 than those of MnOx/AC seemed to be important for the catalytic oxidation of toluene.

Removal of nanoplastics in water treatment processes: A review

Nanoplastics are drawing a significant attention as a result of their propensity to spread across the environment and pose a threat to all organisms. The presence of nanoplastics in water is given attention nowadays as the transit of nanoplastics occurs through the aquatic ecosphere besides terrestrial mobility. The principal removal procedures for macro-and micro-plastic particles are effective, but nanoparticles escape from the treatment, increasing in the water and significantly influencing the society. This critical review is aimed to bestow the removal technologies of nanoplastics from aquatic ecosystems, with a focus on the treatment of freshwater, drinking water, and wastewater, as well as the importance of transit and its impact on health concerns. Still, there exists a gap in providing a collective knowledge on the methods available for nanoplastics removal. Hence, this review offered various nanoplastic removal technologies (microorganism-based degradation, membrane separation with a reactor, and photocatalysis) that could be the practical/effective measures along with the traditional procedures (filtration, coagulation, centrifugation, flocculation, and gravity settling). From the analyses of different treatment systems, the effectiveness of nanoplastics removal depends on various factors, source, size, and type of nanoplastics apart from the treatment method adopted. Combined removal methods, filtration with coagulation offer great scope for the removal of nanoplastics from drinking water with >99 % efficiency. The collected data could serve as base-line information for future research and development in water nanoplastics cleanup.

Mechanisms and influencing factors of yttrium sorption on paddy soil: Experiments and modeling

High-technology rare earth elements (REEs) as emerging contaminants have potentially hazardous risks for human health and the environment. Investigating the sorption of REEs on soils is crucial for understanding their migration and transformation. This study evaluated the sorption mechanisms and influencing factors of the rare earth element yttrium (Y) on paddy soil via integrated batch sorption experiments and theoretical modeling analysis. Site energy distribution theory (SEDT) combined with kinetics, thermodynamics, and isotherm sorption models were applied to illustrate the sorption mechanism. In addition, the effects of phosphorus (P), solution pH, particle size of soil microaggregates, and initial Y content on the sorption processes were evaluated by self-organizing map (SOM) and Boruta algorithm. The sorption kinetic behavior of Y on paddy soil was more consistent with the pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic results showed that the Y sorption was a spontaneous endothermic reaction. The generalized Langmuir model well described the isotherm data of Y sorption on heterogeneous paddy soil and soil microaggregates surface. The maximum sorption capacity of Y decreased with increasing soil particle size, which may be related to the number of sorption sites for Y on paddy soil and soil microaggregates, as confirmed by SEDT. The heterogeneity of sorption site energy for Y was the highest in the original paddy soil compared with the separated soil microaggregates. The SOM technique and Boruta algorithm highlighted that the initial concentration of Y and coexisting phosphorus played essential roles in the sorption process of Y, indicating that the addition of phosphate fertilizer may be an effective way to reduce the Y bioavailability in paddy soil in practice. These results can provide a scientific basis for the sustainable management of soil REEs and a theoretical foundation for the remediation of REEs-contaminated soils.

Hospital procedural volume and clinical outcomes for transcatheter aortic valve replacement – US nationwide readmission database, 2016–2019

Background

The number of hospitals offering transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) programs has increased exponentially in the United States over past several years. Multiple prior studies indicate relationship between hospital volume and clinical outcomes for various cardiac procedures.

Purpose

The association between the hospital procedural volume and clinical outcomes for TAVR is yet poorly understood. In this study, we aim to examine the in-hospital outcomes after TAVR stratified by hospital volume within a nationally representative, large database.

Methods

The National Readmission Database (NRD) 2016–2019 was used to identify hospitals with established TAVR programs (performing ≥20 TAVRs/year). Based on annualized procedural volume of transfemoral TAVR, hospitals were stratified into tertiles of low, medium, and high volume TAVR centers. Rates of adverse in-hospital events (death, cardiac arrest, stroke, vascular complications, and permanent pacemaker), 30-day mortality, and 30-day readmission rates were examined. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to compare overall outcomes following TAVR in low-, medium-, and high-volume centers; adjusted for baseline characteristics and comorbidity burden.

Results

Of 71 million discharge records reviewed, a total of 232,581 patients underwent transfemoral TAVR between 2016–2019. Of all the TAVR cases, 77,183 (33.2%), 75,987 (32.7%), and 79,411 (34.1%) were performed at low-, medium-, and high-volume hospitals respectively. The median number of annual TAVR procedures was 91, 229, and 456 in low-, medium-, and high-volume centers respectively. Adjusted in-hospital mortality was significantly higher in low-volume (OR: 1.40, 95% CI: 1.21–1.62, p&lt;0.01) and medium-volume (OR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.11–1.50, p&lt;0.01) hospitals compared with high-volume centers. Similarly, adjusted 30-day mortality (OR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.27–1.66, p&lt;0.01), 30-day readmission rates (OR: 1.11, 95% CI: 1.05–1.18, p&lt;0.01), and in-hospital cardiac arrest (OR: 1.20, 95% CI: 1.08–1.33, p&lt;0.01) were significantly higher for centers in the lowest-volume tertile compared with those in the highest-volume tertile. There were no significant differences in hospital length of stay (mean, 4.3±6.5 days), in-hospital stroke, acute kidney injury, vascular complications, need for permanent pacemaker, or mechanical circulatory support post-TAVR between the three groups.

Conclusion

In the United States, an inverse volume-mortality relationship was observed for transfemoral TAVR procedures from 2016 through 2019. Mortality and readmission rates at 30 days post-TAVR were significantly higher at low-volume hospitals compared with high-volume hospitals. Further research focusing at establishing protocols and standardized training programs may help mitigate the discrepancy in TAVR outcomes amongst hospitals with discrepant procedural volume.

Applications of machine learning to a compact magnetic spectrometer for high repetition rate, laser-driven particle acceleration

Accurately and rapidly diagnosing laser-plasma interactions is often difficult due to the time-intensive nature of the analysis and will only become more so with the rise of high repetition rate lasers and the desire to implement feedback on a commensurate timescale. Diagnostic analysis employing machine learning techniques can help address this problem while maintaining a high degree of accuracy. We report on the application of machine learning to the analysis of a scintillator-based electron spectrometer for experiments on high intensity, laser-plasma interactions at the Colorado State University Advanced Lasers and Extreme Photonics facility. Our approach utilizes a neural network trained on synthetic data and tested on experiments to extract the accelerated electron temperature. By leveraging transfer learning, we demonstrate an improvement in the neural network accuracy, decreasing the network error by 50%.

Rice hull biochar enhances the mobilization and methylation of mercury in a soil under changing redox conditions: Implication for Hg risks management in paddy fields

Biochar amendment to paddy soils was promising to mitigate mercury (Hg) accumulation in rice; thus, it was applied to reduce human Hg exposure via rice consumption. However, how biochar affects Hg mobilization and MeHg formation in soil under changed redox potential (Eh) conditions remained unknown. Here, we explored the change of dissolved total Hg (DTHg) and dissolved MeHg (DMeHg), and their controlling biogeochemical factors in a soil with(out) biochar amendment under changing Eh conditions using biogeochemical microcosm. Biochar amendment resulted in a widen Eh range (-300 to 400 mV) compared to the control (-250 to 350 mV), demonstrating that biochar promoted reduction-oxidization reactions in soil. Biochar amendment enhanced Hg mobilization by mediating reductive dissolution of Fe/Mn (hydr)oxides. Thus, the increased Hg availability promoted MeHg formation in the soils. Biochar amendment changed the soil organic matter (SOM) composition. Positive correlations between the relative abundance of LIPID (lipids, alkanes/alkenes), ALKYL (alkylaromatics), and suberin and MeHg concentrations indicate that these SOM groups might be related to MeHg formation. Biochar enhanced the releasing and methylation of Hg by promoting the mobilization of Fe(oxyhydr)oxides and alternation of carbon chemistry under dynamic Eh conditions. There is an unexpected environmental risk associated with biochar application to paddy soils under dynamic Eh condition, and one should be aware this risk when applying biochar aiming to minimize human Hg exposure health risks via rice consumption.

Homogeneous, Micron-Scale High-Energy-Density Matter Generated by Relativistic Laser-Solid Interactions

Short-pulse, laser-solid interactions provide a unique platform for studying complex high-energy-density matter. We present the first demonstration of solid-density, micron-scale keV plasmas uniformly heated by a high-contrast, 400 nm wavelength laser at intensities up to 2×10^{21}  W/cm^{2}. High-resolution spectral analysis of x-ray emission reveals uniform heating up to 3.0 keV over 1  μm depths. Particle-in-cell simulations indicate the production of a uniformly heated keV plasma to depths of 2  μm. The significant bulk heating and presence of highly ionized ions deep within the target are attributed to the few MeV hot electrons that become trapped and undergo refluxing within the target sheath fields. These conditions enabled the differentiation of atomic physics models of ionization potential depression in high-energy-density environments.

Mobilization of contaminants: Potential for soil remediation and unintended consequences

Land treatment has become an essential waste management practice. Therefore, soil becomes a major source of contaminants including organic chemicals and potentially toxic elements (PTEs) which enter the food chain, primarily through leaching to potable water sources, plant uptake, and animal transfer. A range of soil amendments are used to manage the mobility of contaminants and subsequently their bioavailability. Various soil amendments, like desorbing agents, surfactants, and chelating agents, have been applied to increase contaminant mobility and bioavailability. These mobilizing agents are applied to increase the contaminant removal though phytoremediation, bioremediation, and soil washing. However, possible leaching of the mobilized pollutants during soil washing is a major limitation, particularly when there is no active plant uptake. This leads to groundwater contamination and toxicity to plants and soil biota. In this context, the present review provides an overview on various soil amendments used to enhance the bioavailability and mobility of organic and inorganic contaminants, thereby facilitating increased risk when soil is remediated in polluted areas. The unintended consequences of the mobilization methods, when used to remediate polluted sites, are discussed in relation to the leaching of mobilized contaminants when active plant growth is absent. The toxicity of targeted and non-targeted contaminants to microbial communities and higher plants is also discussed. Finally, this review work summarizes the existing research gaps in various contaminant mobilization approaches, and prospects for future research.

Environmental implications, potential value, and future of food-waste anaerobic digestate management: A review

Globally, the valorisation of food waste into digestate through the process of anaerobic digestion is becoming increasingly popular. As a result, a large amount of food-waste digestate will need to be properly utilised. The utilisation of anaerobic digestion for fertiliser and alternative uses is essential to obtain a circular bioeconomy. The review aims to examine the environmental management of food-waste digestate, the value of digestate as a fertiliser and soil conditioner, and the emerging uses and improvements for post-anaerobic digestion reuse of digestate. Odour emissions, contaminants in food waste, emission and leaching of nutrients into the environment, and the regulations, policies, and voluntary initiatives of anaerobic digestion are evaluated in the review. Food-waste digestate can provide essential nutrients, carbon, and bio-stimulants to soils and increase yield. Recently, promising research has shown that digestates can be used in hydroponic systems and potentially replace the use of synthetic fertilisers. The integration of anaerobic digestion with emerging uses, such as extraction of value-added products, algae cultivation, biochar and hydrochar production, can further reduce inhibitory sources of digestate and provide additional economic opportunities for businesses. Moreover, the end-product digestate from these technologies can also be more suitable for use in soil application and hydroponic use.

The effects of COVID-19 transmission on environmental sustainability and human health: Paving the way to ensure its sustainable management

The transmission dynamics and health risks of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic are inextricably linked to ineract with environment, climate, air pollution, and meteorological conditions. The spread of COVID-19 infection can thus perturb the 'planetary health' and livelihood by exerting impacts on the temporal and spatial variabilities of environmental pollution. Prioritization of COVID-19 by the health-care sector has been posing a serious threat to economic progress while undermining the efforts to meet the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for environmental sustainability. Here, we review the multifaceted effects of COVID-19 with respect to environmental quality, climatic variables, SDGs, energy resilience, and sustainability programs. It is well perceived that COVID-19 may have long-lasting and profound effects on socio-economic systems, food security, livelihoods, and the 'nexus' indicators. To seek for the solution of these problems, consensus can be drawn to establish and ensure a sound health-care system, a sustainable environment, and a circular bioeconomy. A holistic analysis of COVID-19's effects on multiple sectors should help develop nature-based solutions, cleaner technologies, and green economic recovery plans to help maintain environmental sustainability, ecosystem resilience, and planetary health.

[Correlation analysis of clock genes and MEN2 medullary thyroid carcinoma]

Objective: To investigate the correlation between CLOCK and BMAL1 genes and MEN2 medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). Methods: Thirteen cases with MEN2 MTC and thirteen cases with non-MEN2 MTC were selected who were treated in the Yantai Yuhuangding Hospital between January 2013 and September 2021. Clinical indicators such as blood calcitonin level, tumor diameter and metastatic lymph node of patients were collected. The expression differences of CLOCK and BMAL1 between MEN2 MTC and para-carcinoma tissue as well as between MEN2 MTC and non-MEN2 MTC were detected by immunohistochemistry and qPCR. The correlation between lymph node metastasis and CLOCK or BMAL1 expression was analyzed. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis combined with qPCR and correlation analysis was used to explore the expression regulation relationship between RET and circadian clock genes. The rhythm disorder of MEN2 cells was verified by lipopolysaccharide cell stimulation experiment after dexamethasone rhythm synchronization. Results: MEN2 MTC exhibited typical RET gene mutation. The mean blood calcitonin level, the tumor diameter and the number of metastatic lymph nodes of patients with MEN2 MTC were higher than those of patients with non-MEN2 MTC (t value was 2.76, 2.53, 2.26, all P<0.05). Immunohistochemical results showed that the expression levels of CLOCK and BMAL1 in MEN2 MTC were higher than those in non-MEN2 MTC, while negatively expressed in para-cancerous thyroid follicle. qPCR displayed that the expression of CLOCK gene in cancer tissues was higher than that in non-MEN2 MTC and para-cancerous tissues (t value was 2.68 and 2.86, all P<0.05); the expression of BMAL1 gene in MEN2 MTC was higher than that in non-MEN2 MTC and para-cancerous tissues (t value was 2.21 and 2.35, all P<0.05). Correlation analysis showed that the expression levels of CLOCK and BMAL1 genes were positively correlated with the number of lymph node metastases in patients with MEN2 MTC (r=0.65, P<0.001; r=0.52, P=0.005). PPI network analysis indicated that the expression of CLOCK gene was positively correlated with the abnormal expression of RET gene (r=0.96, P<0.001). With lipopolysaccharide to stimulate cultured cells in vitro after dexamethasone rhythm synchronization, the expressions of CLOCK and BMAL1 in MEN2 MTC cells (0.47±0.22 and 2.60±1.48) at 12 hours of synchronization were significantly lower than those in para-cancerous tissues (1.70±1.62 and 8.23±2.52), the difference was statistically significant(t=5.04, P=0.007; t=3.34, P=0.029). Conclusion: CLOCK and BMAL1 are correlated with the occurrence and development of MEN2 MTC, and may be potential targets for the development of new therapeutic strategies for MEN2 MTC.

Sustainable valorization of styrofoam and CO2 into syngas

Plastic is a versatile material broadly used in a variety of industries. However, the current disposal practices for plastic wastes (incineration/landfilling) add the hazardous materials into the environment. To offer a sustainable valorization platform for plastic waste, this study adopted the catalytic pyrolysis process using CO₂ as a co-feedstock. A model plastic waste collected from a seaport was waste buoy (WB), which has been widely used in fishing industry. Prior to the pyrolysis tests, the exact type of plastic in WB and the thermolytic characteristics of WB were examined. Since the WB was made of polystyrene, it was mainly converted into styrene monomer (styrene), dimer (diphenyl-1-butene), and trimer (2,4,6-triphenyl-1-hexene) from pyrolysis of WB. To further valorize/detoxify styrene derivatives into value-added syngas, catalytic pyrolysis of WB was practiced using the Ni-based catalysts (2/5/10 wt% Ni/SiO₂). The yield of H₂ from the catalytic pyrolysis process of WB was more than one magnitude higher comparing to that from the non-catalytic one. H₂ formation also increased as catalyst loading increased. When flow gas was switched from inert gas to CO₂, CO gas formation was enhanced due to the chemical reactions between CO₂ and styrene derivatives over Ni catalysts. Syngas (H₂/CO) formation under the CO₂ condition was 5 times higher in comparison to the N₂ condition in catalytic pyrolyses of WB with 10 wt% Ni/SiO₂. CO₂ also effectively suppressed coke deposition on a Ni catalyst. This study proposes a sustainable valorization and disposal platform for used plastic waste and greenhouse gas (CO₂), converting them into value-added fuel.

Physical activity patterns, genetic susceptibility, and risk of hip/knee osteoarthritis: a prospective cohort study based on the UK Biobank

OBJECTIVES

The effect of physical activity on hip/knee osteoarthritis (OA) and how it varies by genetic susceptibility to OA remains inconclusive.

METHODS

In a cohort study of UK Biobank, 436,166 OA-free participants were recruited in 2006-2010 and followed for knee/hip OA until the end of 2020. 28 physical activity-related items were collected at baseline. Cox regression was used to estimate associations between physical activity behaviors, as well as major activity patterns (i.e., significant principal components[PCs] identified by principal component analysis), and risk of OA, adjusting for multiple confounders. We further stratified the analyses by polygenic risk score (PRS) for OA to examine the impact of genetic susceptibility to OA on the studied association.

RESULTS

During a mean follow-up of 11.15 years, 13,227 hip and 21,119 knee OA cases were identified. 19, out of 28, studied items showed associations with increased OA risk. Compared with low adherence group(<1^st tertile of PC score for each pattern), individuals with high adherence to five identified patterns were associated with increased risk of OA. The moderate adherence to "strenuous sports"(HR = 0.93, 95%CI: 0.89-0.97) and "walking for pleasure"(HR = 0.93, 95%CI: 0.89-0.98) patterns was associated with reduced OA. Similar risk patterns were obtained in the stratified analysis by PRS levels for OA.

CONCLUSION

High intensity of most activity patterns were associated with increased OA. However, a protective effect was suggested for moderate adherence to patterns of "strenuous sports" and "walking for pleasure" that consistent across different genetic susceptibilities, underscoring the potential benefits of moderate-intensity physical activity on OA.

Enhancing microplastics biodegradation during composting using livestock manure biochar

Biodegradation of microplastics (MPs) in contaminated biowastes has received big scientific attention during the past few years. The aim here is to study the impacts of livestock manure biochar (LMBC) on the biodegradation of polyhydroxyalkanoate microplastics (PHA-MPs) during composting, which have not yet been verified. LMBC (10% wt/wt) and PHA-MPs (0.5% wt/wt) were added to a mixture of pristine cow manure and sawdust for composting, whereas a mixture without LMBC served as the control (CK). The maximum degradation rate of PHA-MPs (22-31%) was observed in the thermophilic composting stage in both mixtures. LMBC addition significantly (P < 0.05) promoted PHA-MPs degradation and increased the carbon loss and oxygen loading of PHA-MPs compared to CK. Adding LMBC accelerated the cleavage of C-H bonds and oxidation of PHA-MPs, and increased the O-H, CO and C-O functional groups on MPs. Also, LMBC addition increased the relative abundance of dominant microorganisms (Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Deinococcus-Thermus, Bacteroidetes, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota) and promoted the enrichment of MP-degrading microbial biomarkers (e.g., Bacillus, Thermobacillus, Luteimonas, Chryseolinea, Aspergillus and Mycothermus). LMBC addition further increased the complexity and connectivity between dominant microbial biomarkers and PHA-MPs degradation characteristics, strengthened their positive relationship, thereby accelerated PHA-MPs biodegradation, and mitigated the potential environmental and human health risk. These findings provide a reference point for reducing PHA-MPs in compost and safe recycling of MPs contaminated organic wastes. However, these results should be validated with other composting matrices and conditions.

Valorizing plastic toy wastes to flammable gases through CO2-mediated pyrolysis with a Co-based catalyst

Toys are discarded due to their short life cycle. Unfortunately, development of sustainable disposal platform for toy has not gained particular concern. To establish a reliable disposal platform, this study employed a pyrolysis platform to valorize plastics into value-added fuels. To confer more environmentally resilient process, CO₂ was used as a feedstock to enhance the process efficiency from a perspective of the yield of flammable gases. To this end, waste toy brick (WTB) was used as a model compound. The exact types of plastics (polyacrylonitrile, polybutadiene, polystyrene, and polymethyl methacrylate) in WTB were experimentally determined. In pyrolysis of WTB, the complicated mixture of benzene derivatives was inevitably generated. To detoxify them by means of syngas (H₂/CO) production, catalytic pyrolysis was performed. Co catalyst effectively induced chemical bond scissions, leading to substantially enhanced H₂ formation. Also, the gas phase reactions (GPRs) between CO₂ and volatile compounds over Co catalyst expedited the production rate of CO, and such CO enhancement effectively offered a chance to mitigate toxic chemical generations. The synergistic contribution of CO₂ and Co catalyst enhanced syngas formation more than 25 times in reference to pyrolysis of WTB without Co catalyst. The GPRs also greatly prevented catalyst deactivation.

Feasibility of an ultra-low dose contrast media protocol for coronary CT angiography

AIM

To evaluate the feasibility of an ultra-low volume contrast media (CM) protocol for coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In total, 214 patients receiving coronary CTA were enrolled prospectively and divided into group A (n=107) receiving a conventional dose of CM and group B (n=107) receiving an ultra-low dose. CT values of the right coronary artery (RCA), left anterior descending artery (LAD), and left circumflex artery (LCX) were measured and radiation doses recorded. The image quality was compared between the groups. Changes in renal function indices and proteinuria before, 24, and 72 hours after coronary CTA among those with chronic kidney disease (CKD) were also assessed.

RESULTS

There were significant differences in CT values and radiation doses between groups A and B. In group A, the average RCA, LAD, and LCX CT values were 412.5 ± 79.2, 423.5 ± 73.7, and 422.0 ± 88.1 HU, respectively. In group B, the average RCA, LAD, and LCX CT values were 275.2 ± 16.2, 277.8 ± 16.4, and 278.9 ± 16.5 HU, respectively. The radiation dose in the ultra-low protocol recipients (118.70 ± 18.52 mGy·cm) was significantly lower than that used in conventional coronary CTA (131.75 ± 20.96 mGy·cm). The image quality of group B was comparable to that of group A, satisfying the diagnostic requirement. In patients with mild CKD, there were no significant differences in renal functions after coronary CTA.

CONCLUSION

An ultra-low CM protocol was established for coronary CTA, providing comparable image quality and diagnostic yields but significantly lower radiation dose compared with a conventional protocol. This new protocol might be applicable to patients with mild CKD.
