One-dimensional Ga2O3-Al2O3 nanofibers with unsaturated coordination Ga: Catalytic dehydrogenation of propane under CO2 atmosphere with excellent stability

The pressing demand for propylene has spurred intensive research on the catalytic dehydrogenation of propane to produce propylene. Gallium-based catalysts are regarded as highly promising due to their exceptional dehydrogenation activity in the presence of CO2. However, the inherent coking issue associated with high temperature reactions poses a constraint on the stability development of this process. In this study, we employed the electrospinning method to prepare a range of Ga2O3-Al2O3 mixed oxide one-dimensional nanofiber catalysts with varying molar ratios for CO2 oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (CO2-OPDH). The propane conversion was up to 48.4 % and the propylene selectivity was high as 96.8 % at 500 °C, the ratio of propane to carbon dioxide is 1:2. After 100 h of reaction, the catalyst still maintains approximately 10 % conversion and exhibits a propylene selectivity of around 98 %. The electrospinning method produces one-dimensional nanostructures with a larger specific surface area, unique multi-stage pore structure and low-coordinated Ga3+, which enhances mass transfer and accelerates reaction intermediates. This results in less coking and improved catalyst stability. The high activity of the catalyst is attributed to an abundance of low-coordinated Ga3+ ions associated with weak/medium-strong Lewis acid centers. In situ infrared analysis reveals that the reaction mechanism involves a two-step dehydrogenation via propane isocleavage, with the second dehydrogenation of Ga-OR at the metal-oxygen bond being the decisive speed step.

Machine learning models for predicting thermal desorption remediation of soils contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Among various remediation methods for organic-contaminated soil, thermal desorption stands out due to its broad treatment range and high efficiency. Nonetheless, analyzing the contribution of factors in complex soil remediation systems and deducing the results under multiple conditions are challenging, given the complexities arising from diverse soil properties, heating conditions, and contaminant types. Machine learning (ML) methods serve as a powerful analytical tool that can extract meaningful insights from datasets and reveal hidden relationships. Due to insufficient research on soil thermal desorption for remediation of organic sites using ML methods, this study took organic pollutants represented by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as the research object and sorted out a comprehensive data set containing >700 data points on the thermal desorption of soil contaminated with PAHs from published literature. Several ML models, including artificial neural network (ANN), random forest (RF), and support vector regression (SVR), were applied. Model optimization and regression fitting centered on soil remediation efficiency, with feature importance analysis conducted on soil and contaminant properties and heating conditions. This approach enabled the quantitative evaluation and prediction of thermal desorption remediation effects on soil contaminated with PAHs. Results indicated that ML models, particularly the RF model (R2 = 0.90), exhibited high accuracy in predicting remediation efficiency. The hierarchical significance of the features within the RF model is elucidated as follows: heating conditions account for 52 %, contaminant properties for 28 %, and soil properties for 20 % of the model's predictive power. A comprehensive analysis suggests that practical applications should emphasize heating conditions for efficient soil remediation. This research provides a crucial reference for optimizing and implementing thermal desorption in the quest for more efficient and reliable soil remediation strategies.

Bimetallic CoCu-modified Pt species in S-1 zeolite with enhanced stability for propane dehydrogenation

Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has been an outstanding technique with a bright prospect, which can meet the growing global demand for propylene. However, undesired side reactions result in the deactivation of the Pt-based catalysts, which contribute to the insufficient lifetime of the catalysts. Herein, we describe a novel catalyst by encapsulating bimetallic CoCu-modified Pt species in S-1 zeolite for efficient dehydrogenation of propane, which synergizes the confinement of zeolites and the geometric and electronic effects on Pt species for enhancing the catalyst stability. The introduction of bimetallic additives efficiently promotes the dispersion of platinum and the electron transfer between Pt species and the additives, which greatly prolongs the lifetime of the catalysts. Particularly, no obvious deactivation is observed on 0.2Pt0.3Co0.5CuK@S-1 after 93 h on stream with a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 5.4 h-1, revealing an ultralow deactivation constant of 0.0011 h-1 (t = 909 h). The formation rate of propylene still maintains at a high value of 407 mol gPt-1 h-1 (WHSV = 21.6 h-1) at 580 ℃ even after on pure propane stream for 42 h. The catalyst with the bimetallic CoCu-modified Pt species in S-1 zeolite reveals ultra-high activity and stability for PDH, which is ascribed to the highly dispersed Pt species and the stabilization effect of bimetallic additives on Pt species.

TLR3 activation enhances abscopal effect of radiotherapy in HCC by promoting tumor ferroptosis

Radiotherapy (RT) has been reported to induce abscopal effect in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but such phenomenon was only observed in sporadic cases. Here, we demonstrated that subcutaneous administration of Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) agonist poly(I:C) could strengthen the abscopal effect during RT through activating tumor cell ferroptosis signals in bilateral HCC subcutaneous tumor mouse models, which could be significantly abolished by TLR3 knock-out or ferroptosis inhibitor ferrostatin-1. Moreover, poly(I:C) could promote the presentation of tumor neoantigens by dendritic cells to enhance the recruitment of activated CD8+ T cells into distant tumor tissues for inducing tumor cell ferroptosis during RT treatment. Finally, the safety and feasibility of combining poly(I:C) with RT for treating advanced HCC patients were further verified in a prospective clinical trial. Thus, enhancing TLR3 signaling activation during RT could provide a novel strategy for strengthening abscopal effect to improve the clinical benefits of advanced HCC patients.

Plasmoid Formation and Strong Radiative Cooling in a Driven Magnetic Reconnection Experiment

We present the first experimental study of plasmoid formation in a magnetic reconnection layer undergoing rapid radiative cooling, a regime relevant to extreme astrophysical plasmas. Two exploding aluminum wire arrays, driven by the Z machine, generate a reconnection layer (S_{L}≈120) in which the cooling rate far exceeds the hydrodynamic transit rate (τ_{hydro}/τ_{cool}>100). The reconnection layer generates a transient burst of >1  keV x-ray emission, consistent with the formation and subsequent rapid cooling of the layer. Time-gated x-ray images show fast-moving (up to 50  km s^{-1}) hotspots in the layer, consistent with the presence of plasmoids in 3D resistive magnetohydrodynamic simulations. X-ray spectroscopy shows that these hotspots generate the majority of Al K-shell emission (around 1.6 keV) prior to the onset of cooling, and exhibit temperatures (170 eV) much greater than that of the plasma inflows and the rest of the reconnection layer, thus providing insight into the generation of high-energy radiation in radiatively cooled reconnection events.

A Drug Repurposing Approach Reveals Targetable Epigenetic Pathways in Plasmodium vivax Hypnozoites

Radical cure of Plasmodium vivax malaria must include elimination of quiescent 'hypnozoite' forms in the liver; however, the only FDA-approved treatments are contraindicated in many vulnerable populations. To identify new drugs and drug targets for hypnozoites, we screened the Repurposing, Focused Rescue, and Accelerated Medchem (ReFRAME) library and a collection of epigenetic inhibitors against P. vivax liver stages. From both libraries, we identified inhibitors targeting epigenetics pathways as selectively active against P. vivax and P. cynomolgi hypnozoites. These include DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) inhibitors as well as several inhibitors targeting histone post-translational modifications. Immunofluorescence staining of Plasmodium liver forms showed strong nuclear 5-methylcystosine signal, indicating liver stage parasite DNA is methylated. Using bisulfite sequencing, we mapped genomic DNA methylation in sporozoites, revealing DNA methylation signals in most coding genes. We also demonstrated that methylation level in proximal promoter regions as well as in the first exon of the genes may affect, at least partially, gene expression in P. vivax. The importance of selective inhibitors targeting epigenetic features on hypnozoites was validated using MMV019721, an acetyl-CoA synthetase inhibitor that affects histone acetylation and was previously reported as active against P. falciparum blood stages. In summary, our data indicate that several epigenetic mechanisms are likely modulating hypnozoite formation or persistence and provide an avenue for the discovery and development of improved radical cure antimalarials.

Boosting the Catalase-Like Activity of SAzymes via Facile Tuning of the Distances between Neighboring Atoms in Single-Iron Sites

A nanozyme with neighboring single-iron sites (Fe2 -SAzyme) was introduced as a bioinspired catalase mimic, featuring excellent activity under varied conditions, twice as high as that of random Fe1 -SAzyme and ultrahigh H2 O2 affinity as that of bioenzymes. Surprisingly, the interatomic spacing tuning between adjacent iron sites also suppressed the competitive peroxidase pathway, remarkably increasing the catalase/peroxidase selectivity up to ~6 times compared to Fe1 -SAzyme. This dramatically switched the catalytic activity of Fe-SAzymes from generating (i.e. Fe1 -SAzymes, preferably mimicking peroxidase) to scavenging ROS (i.e. Fe2 -SAzymes, dominantly mimicking catalase). Theoretical and experimental investigations suggested that the pairwise single-iron sites may serve as a robust molecular tweezer to efficiently trap and decompose H2 O2 into O2 , via cooperative hydrogen-bonding induced end-bridge adsorption. The versatile mechano-assisted in situ MOF capsulation strategy enabled facile access to neighboring M2 -SAzyme (M=Fe, Ir, Pt), even up to a 1000 grams scale, but with no obvious scale-up effect for both structures and performances.

β-Nicotinamide Mononucleotide Promotes Cell Proliferation and Hair Growth by Reducing Oxidative Stress

β-Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) has shown promising effects on intestinal health, and it is extensively applied as an anti-aging and Alzheimer's disease therapeutic, due to its medicinal properties. The effects of NMN on the growth of mouse hair were observed after hair removal. The results indicated that NMN can reverse the state of hair follicle atrophy, hair thinning, and hair sparsity induced by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), compared to that of minoxidil. In addition, the action mechanisms of NMN promoting hair growth in cultured human dermal papilla cells (HDPCs) treated with DHT were investigated in detail. The incubation of HDPCs with DHT led to a decrease in cell viability and the release of inflammatory mediators, including interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-1Beta (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor Alpha (TNF-α). It was found that NMN can significantly lower the release of inflammatory factors induced by DHT in HDPCs. HDPCs cells are protected from oxidative stress damage by NMN, which inhibits the NF-κB p65 inflammatory signaling pathway. Moreover, the levels of androgen receptor (AR), dickkopf-1 (DKK-1), and β-catenin in the HDPCs were assessed using PCR, indicating that NMN can significantly enhance the expression of VEGF, reduced IL-6 levels and suppress the expression of AR and DKK-1, and notably increase β-catenin expression in DHT-induced HDPCs.

Advances in ultrasonic treatment of oily sludge: mechanisms, industrial applications, and integration with combined treatment technologies

In the petroleum sector, the generation of oily sludge is an unavoidable byproduct, necessitating the development of efficient treatment strategies for both economic gain and the mitigation of negative environmental impacts. The intricate composition of oily sludge poses a formidable challenge, as existing treatment methodologies frequently fall short of achieving baseline disposal criteria. The processes of demulsification and dehydration are integral to diminishing the oil content and reclaiming valuable crude oil, thereby playing a critical role in the management of oily sludge. Among the myriad of treatment solutions, ultrasonic technology has emerged as a particularly effective physical method, celebrated for its diverse applications and lack of resultant secondary pollution. This comprehensive review delves into the underlying mechanisms and recent progress in the ultrasonic treatment of oily sludge, with a specific focus on its industrial implementations within China. Both isolated ultrasonic treatment and its combination with other technological approaches have proven successful in addressing oily sludge challenges. The adoption of industrial-scale systems that amalgamate ultrasound with multi-technological processes has shown marked enhancements in treatment efficacy. The fusion of ultrasonic technology with other cutting-edge methods holds considerable potential across a spectrum of applications. To fulfill the goals of resource recovery, reduction, and neutralization in oily sludge management, the industrial adoption and adept application of a variety of treatment technologies are imperative.

Carbonized polymer dots modified ZnIn2S4 microspheres for visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution promotion performance

To effectively separate electron-hole pairs produced by light, a heterojunction arrangement can be employed, thereby improving photocatalytic efficiency. In this study, a simple hydrothermal process is used to manufacture carbonized polymer dots/ZnIn2S4 (CPDs/ZIS) heterostructure, which enhances the light absorption and charge carrier lifetime in comparison to bare ZnIn2S4 (ZIS). Upon irradiation with visible light, the 3-CPDs/ZIS composite generates hydrogen at a rate of 133 μmol g-1 h-1, which is 8.9 times faster than that of pure ZIS. The addition of CPDs can increase the range of light that can be absorbed, extend the service life of the optical charge, increase the specific surface area, and promote charge separation and transmission, which could effectively accelerate the photocatalytic reduction reaction. The presence of CPDs results in the introduction of multiple transition energy states and a decrease in the H* adsorption free energy, which enhances the hydrogen evolution activity according to the theoretical calculation findings of density functional theory (DFT) and Gibbs free energy of the hydrogen evolution process. Combining theoretical calculations and experimental results, a direct Z-type heterojunction mechanism is proposed for the hydrogen evolution promotion effectiveness of CPDs/ZIS under visible light.

Temperature-Sensitive Aerogel Using Bagasse Carboxylated Cellulose Nanocrystals/N-Isopropyl Acrylamide for Controlled Release of Pesticides

Temperature-sensitive carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals/N-isopropyl acrylamide aerogels (CCNC-NIPAMs) were developed as novel pesticide-controlled release formulas. Ammonium persulfate (APS) one-step oxidation was used to prepare bagasse-based CCNCs, and then the monomer N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM) was successfully introduced and constructed into the temperature-sensitive CCNC-NIPAMs through polymerization. The results of the zeta potential measurement and Fourier infrared transform spectrum (FTIR) show that the average particle size of the CCNCs was 120.9 nm, the average surface potential of the CCNCs was -34.8 mV, and the crystallinity was 62.8%. The primary hydroxyl group on the surface of the CCNCs was replaced by the carboxyl group during oxidation. The morphology and structure of CCNC-NIPAMs were characterized via electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), compression performance, porosity analysis, and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. The results demonstrate that CCNC-NIPAM has a high porosity and low density, as well as good thermal stability, which is conducive to loading and releasing pesticides. In the swelling, drug loading, and controlled release process, the CCNC-NIPAM exhibited significant temperature sensitivity. Under the same NIPAM reaction amount, the equilibrium swelling rate of the CCNC-NIPAM first increased and then decreased with increasing temperature, and the cumulative drug release ratio of the CCNC-NIPAM at 39 °C was significantly higher than that at 25 °C. The loading efficiency of the CCNC-NIPAM on the model drug thiamethoxam (TXM) was up to 23 wt%, and the first-order model and Korsmyer-Peppas model could be well-fitted in the drug release curves. The study provides a new method for the effective utilization of biomass and pesticides.

Novel synergistically effects of palladium-iron bimetal and manganese carbonate carrier for catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde at room temperature

The elimination of formaldehyde at room temperature holds immense potential for various applications, and the incorporation of a catalyst rich in surface hydroxyl groups and oxygen significantly enhances its catalytic activity towards formaldehyde oxidation. By employing a coprecipitation method, we successfully achieved a palladium domain confined within the manganese carbonate lattice and doped with iron. This synergistic effect between highly dispersed palladium and iron greatly amplifies the concentration of surface hydroxyl groups and oxygen on the catalyst, thereby enabling complete oxidation of formaldehyde at ambient conditions. The proposed method facilitates the formation of domain-limited palladium within the MnCO3 lattice, thereby enhancing the dispersion of palladium and facilitating its partial incorporation into the MnCO3 lattice. Consequently, this approach promotes increased exposure of active sites and enhances the catalyst's capacity for oxygen activation. The co-doping of iron effectively splits the doping sites of palladium to further enhance its dispersion, while simultaneously modifying the electronic modification of the catalyst to alter formaldehyde's adsorption strength on it. Manganese carbonate exhibits superior adsorption capability for activated surface hydroxyl groups due to the presence of carbonate. In situ infrared testing revealed that dioxymethylene and formate are primary products resulting from catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde, with catalyst surface oxygen and hydroxyl groups playing a crucial role in intermediate product decomposition and oxidation. This study provides novel insights for designing palladium-based catalysts.

Laboratory Study of Collisionless Magnetic Reconnection

A concise review is given on the past two decades' results from laboratory experiments on collisionless magnetic reconnection in direct relation with space measurements, especially by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission. Highlights include spatial structures of electromagnetic fields in ion and electron diffusion regions as a function of upstream symmetry and guide field strength, energy conversion and partitioning from magnetic field to ions and electrons including particle acceleration, electrostatic and electromagnetic kinetic plasma waves with various wavelengths, and plasmoid-mediated multiscale reconnection. Combined with the progress in theoretical, numerical, and observational studies, the physics foundation of fast reconnection in collisionless plasmas has been largely established, at least within the parameter ranges and spatial scales that were studied. Immediate and long-term future opportunities based on multiscale experiments and space missions supported by exascale computation are discussed, including dissipation by kinetic plasma waves, particle heating and acceleration, and multiscale physics across fluid and kinetic scales.

Phosphorus-Doped Hollow Tubular g-C3N4 for Enhanced Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is a tactic for solving the environmental pollution caused by greenhouse gases. Herein, NH4H2PO4 was added as a phosphorus source in the process of the hydrothermal treatment of melamine for the first time, and phosphorus-doped hollow tubular g-C3N4 (x-P-HCN) was fabricated and used for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Here, 1.0-P-HCN exhibited the largest CO production rate of 9.00 μmol·g-1·h-1, which was 10.22 times higher than that of bulk g-C3N4. After doping with phosphorus, the light absorption range, the CO2 adsorption capacity, and the specific surface area of the 1.0-P-HCN sample were greatly improved. In addition, the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs was enhanced. Furthermore, the phosphorus-doped g-C3N4 effectively activated the CO2 adsorbed on the surface of phosphorus-doped g-C3N4 photocatalysts, which greatly enhanced the CO production rate of photocatalytic CO2 reduction over that of g-C3N4.

One-step ethylene purification from ternary mixtures by an ultramicroporous material with synergistic binding centers

Developing advanced porous materials with industrial potential to separate multicomponent gas mixtures that are structurally similar is a crucial but challenging task. Here, we report the efficient one-step separation of ethylene (C2H4) from acetylene (C2H2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) using an ultramicroporous metal-organic framework UTSA-16. The synergistic effect of the polarized carboxyl groups and coordinated water molecules in its pore channel enables the material to have high uptakes for C2H2 and CO2 due to electrostatic potential matching, as well as excellent separation selectivity against C2H4. Breakthrough experiments suggest that UTSA-16 can efficiently separate 99.9% pure C2H4 from ternary mixtures with a high productivity of 403 L kg-1. Moreover, the preparation cost of UTSA-16 is significantly lower than other related adsorbents by 40-2000 times, indicating its unique potential for industrial applications.

Induced-Fit-Identification in a Rigid Metal-Organic Framework for ppm-Level CO2 Removal and Ultra-Pure CO Enrichment

Removing CO2 from crude syngas via physical adsorption is an effective method to yield eligible syngas. However, the bottleneck in trapping ppm-level CO2 and improving CO purity at higher working temperatures are major challenges. Here we report a thermoresponsive metal-organic framework (1 a-apz), assembled by rigid Mg2 (dobdc) (1 a) and aminopyrazine (apz), which not only affords an ultra-high CO2 capacity (145.0/197.6 cm3  g-1 (0.01/0.1 bar) at 298 K) but also produces ultra-pure CO (purity ≥99.99 %) at a practical ambient temperature (TA ). Several characterization results, including variable-temperature tests, in situ high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction (HR-SXRD), and simulations, explicitly unravel that the excellent property is attributed to the induced-fit-identification in 1 a-apz that comprises self-adaption of apz, multiple binding sites, and complementary electrostatic potential (ESP). Breakthrough tests suggest that 1 a-apz can remove CO2 from 1/99 CO2 /CO mixtures at practical 348 K, yielding 70.5 L kg-1 of CO with ultra-high purity of ≥99.99 %. The excellent separation performance is also revealed by separating crude syngas that contains quinary mixtures of H2 /N2 /CH4 /CO/CO2 (46/18.3/2.4/32.3/1, v/v/v/v/v).

Analytical interpretation of the gap of CNN's cognition between SAR and optical target recognition

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) automatic target recognition (ATR) is a crucial technique utilized in various scenarios of geoscience and remote sensing. Despite the remarkable success of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in optical vision tasks, the application of CNNs in SAR ATR is still a challenging area due to the significant differences in the imaging mechanisms of SAR and optical images. This paper analytically addresses the cognitive gap of CNNs between optical and SAR images by leveraging multi-order interactions to measure their representation capacity. Furthermore, we propose a subjective evaluation strategy to compare human interactions with those of CNNs. Our findings reveal that CNNs operate differently for optical and SAR images. Specifically, for SAR images, CNNs' representation capacity is comparable to that of humans, as they can encode intermediate interactions better than simple and complex ones. In contrast, for optical images, CNNs excel at encoding simple and complex interactions, but not intermediate interactions.

One-Pot Three-Dimensional Printing of a Hierarchical NiMo/Al2O3 Monolithic Catalyst for 4,6-Dimethyldibenzothiophene Hydrodesulfurization

The development of a competitive-cost and high-efficiency NiMo/Al₂O₃ hydrodesulfurization (HDS) catalyst remains challenging in the field of petrochemical industry. Herein, a highly efficient NiMo/Al₂O₃ monolithic HDS catalyst was elaborately designed and successfully fabricated via a one-pot three-dimensional (3D) printing strategy, and its HDS activity was examined for 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene conversion. The results unveil that the NiMo/Al₂O₃ monolithic catalyst prepared by the 3D printing strategy (3D-NiMo/Al₂O₃) exhibits hierarchical structure due to the combustion of hydroxymethyl cellulose serving as adhesive, which endows the weaker metal-support-interaction between Mo oxides and Al₂O₃, remarkably promoting sulfidation of both Mo and Ni species and the formation of "Type II" NiMoS active phase, thereby reducing the apparent activation energy (E_a = 109.2 kJ·mol^-1) and increasing the catalytic activity (TOF = 4.0 h^-1) and thereafter dramatically boosting the HDS performance of 3D-NiMo/Al₂O₃ compared with that of NiMo/Al₂O₃ (E_a = 150.6 kJ·mol^-1 and TOF = 2.1 h^-1) counterpart synthesized by conventional method with P123 serving as the mesoporous template. Therefore, this study offers a facile and straightforward strategy to fabricate an efficient HDS catalyst with hierarchical structures.

Single Mo Atoms Stabilized on High-Entropy Perovskite Oxide: A Frontier for Aerobic Oxidative Desulfurization

The design and preparation of catalysts with both excellent stability and maximum exposure of catalytic active sites is highly desirable; however, it remains challenging in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, a entropy-stabilized single-site Mo catalyst via a high-entropy perovskite oxide LaMn_0.2Fe_0.2Co_0.2Ni_0.2Cu_0.2O₃ (HEPO) with abundant mesoporous structures was initiated by a sacrificial-template strategy. The presence of electrostatic interaction between graphene oxide and metal precursors effectively inhibits the agglomeration of precursor nanoparticles in a high-temperature calcination process, thereby endowing the atomically dispersed Mo⁶⁺ coordinated with four O atoms on the defective sites of HEPO. The unique structure of single-site Mo atoms' random distribution with an atomic scale greatly enriches the oxygen vacancy and increases surface exposure of the catalytic active sites on the Mo/HEPO-SAC catalyst. As a result, the obtained Mo/HEPO-SAC exhibits robust recycling stability and ultra-high oxidation activity (turnover frequency = 3.28 × 10^-2) for the catalytic removal of dibenzothiophene (DBT) with air as the oxidant, which represents the top level and is strikingly higher than the state-of-the-art oxidation desulfurization catalysts reported previously under the same or similar reaction conditions. Therefore, the finding here for the first time expands the application of single-atom Mo-supported HEPO materials into the field of ultra-deep oxidative desulfurization.

Emission inventories, emission factors, and composition profiles of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and heavy metals (HMs) from an electronic waste dismantling park in southern China

Electronic waste (e-waste) dismantling is a significant source of atmospheric pollutants, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and heavy metals (HMs), which may have adverse effects on the surrounding environment and residents. However, the organized emission inventories and emission characteristics of VOCs and HMs from e-waste dismantling are not well documented. In this study, the concentrations and components of VOCs and HMs were monitored at the exhaust gas treatment facility from two process areas of a typical e-waste dismantling park in southern China in 2021. Emission inventories of VOCs and HMs were established, with total emissions of 8.85 t/a and 18.3 kg/a for VOCs and HMs in this park, respectively. The cutting & crushing (CC) area was the largest emissions source, accounting for 82.6% of VOCs and 79.9% of HMs, respectively, while the baking plate (BP) area had higher emission factors. Additionally, the concentration and composition of VOCs and HMs in the park were also analyzed. For VOCs, the concentrations of halogenated hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons were comparable in the park, while m/p-xylene, o-xylene, and chlorobenzene were the key VOC species. The HM concentrations followed the order of Pb > Cu > Mn > Ni > As > Cd > Hg, with Pb and Cu being the main heavy metals released. This is the first VOC and HM emission inventory for the e-waste dismantling park, and our data will lay a solid ground for pollution control and management for the e-waste dismantling industry.

Taylor-Couette flow for astrophysical purposes

A concise review is given of astrophysically motivated experimental and theoretical research on Taylor-Couette flow. The flows of interest rotate differentially with the inner cylinder faster than the outer, but are linearly stable against Rayleigh's inviscid centrifugal instability. At shear Reynolds numbers as large as [Formula: see text], hydrodynamic flows of this type (quasi-Keplerian) appear to be nonlinearly stable: no turbulence is seen that cannot be attributed to interaction with the axial boundaries, rather than the radial shear itself. Direct numerical simulations agree, although they cannot yet reach such high Reynolds numbers. This result indicates that accretion-disc turbulence is not purely hydrodynamic in origin, at least insofar as it is driven by radial shear. Theory, however, predicts linear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities in astrophysical discs: in particular, the standard magnetorotational instability (SMRI). MHD Taylor-Couette experiments aimed at SMRI are challenged by the low magnetic Prandtl numbers of liquid metals. High fluid Reynolds numbers and careful control of the axial boundaries are required. The quest for laboratory SMRI has been rewarded with the discovery of some interesting inductionless cousins of SMRI, and with the recently reported success in demonstrating SMRI itself using conducting axial boundaries. Some outstanding questions and near-future prospects are discussed, especially in connection with astrophysics. Visible light driven reform of wasted plastics to generate green hydrogen over mesoporous ZnIn2S4

As the global consumption of plastics keeps increasing, the accumulated plastics in the natural environment have threatened the survival of human beings. Photoreforming, as a simple and low-energy way, could transform wasted plastic into fuel and small organic chemicals at ambient temperature. However, the previously reported photocatalysts have some drawbacks, such as low efficiency, containing precious or toxic metal. Herein, a noble-free, non-toxic, and easy prepared mesoporous ZnIn₂S₄ photocatalyst has been applied in photoreforming of polylactic acid (PLA), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyurethane (PU), generating small organic chemicals and H₂ fuel under simulated sunlight. Plastic was degraded into small organic molecules after the pretreatment, which futher acted as the substrate for photoreforming. Mesoporous ZnIn₂S₄ exhibits high H₂ production efficiency, strong redox ability, and long-term photostability. Furthermore, mesoporous ZnIn₂S₄ could overcome the hindrances of dyes and additives of realistic wasted plastic bags and bottles with high decomposition efficiency, providing an efficient and sustainable strategy for the upcycling of wasted plastics.

Low cost and highly dispersed Ce/Na-ZSM-5 catalysts close to atomic dispersion for enhancing formaldehyde oxidation

Formaldehyde oxidation at room temperature with low-cost catalysts is one of the main development directions of environmental governance. Herein, we developed a low-cost and superior performance highly dispersed Ce on Na-ZSM-5 (Ce/Na-ZSM-5) catalyst, which is close to atomic dispersion for indoor formaldehyde (HCHO) oxidation at low temperature. The highly dispersed catalyst that was similar to atomic dispersion was characterized by EXAFS and AC HAADF-STEM. The optimal Ce/Na-ZSM-5 displays high HCHO removal performance (95%, at room temperature), as well as 100 h stable testing (∼90% HCHO removal). In addition, a reasonable reaction mechanism of the HCHO catalytic oxidation is proposed based on the in situ DRIFT spectra and DFT calculation. This work provides a new way to design an efficient catalyst for the complete oxidation of formaldehyde.

Low-Spin Fe Redox-Based Prussian Blue with excellent selective dual-band electrochromic modulation and energy-saving applications

Dual-band electrochromic materials (DBEMs) are of utmost importance for smart windows to realize independent control of the visible (VIS) and near-infrared (NIR) light. However, very few single-component DBEMs are capable of independently and effectively controlling both VIS and NIR light. Here, we present Prussian blue (PB) with remarkable performance to replace the composite DBEMs that require deliberate design and complicated preparation. Excellent durability and capacity were achieved simultaneously due to the activated low-spin Fe in PB. A dual-band electrochromic device (DBED) by using PB thin films as electrochromic layers was constructed, exhibiting superior dual-band electrochromic performance, energy storage performance and memory effect. We show that the energy-saving DBED can be bleached without applying any external bias potential, and can be colored by using a commercial photovoltaic solar panel under ambient solar irradiation. The stored energy during coloration can be further used to light up the lights. Finally, the coloration mechanism of the DBED was studied by the density functional theory calculations, to shed light on the large optical transmittance modulation in both VIS and NIR regions. The new insights will advance the design of efficient and durable DBEMs and the development of bi-functional smart windows.

Treatment of Cd(Ⅱ) and As(Ⅴ) co-contamination in aqueous environment by steel slag-biochar composites and its mechanism

As toxic elements of concern, Cd(II) and As(V) pose a threat to human health. In this study, a new type of magnetic adsorbent (SBNa800) was prepared using a mixture of industrial waste steel slag and ginkgo leaves to treat wastewater contaminated with Cd(II) and As(V). The maximum adsorption capacities of SBNa800 for Cd(II) and As(V) were 109.17 (pH 5, 1.82 times that of the original biochar) and 59.79 (pH 3) mg/g, respectively. Cd(II) and As(V) adsorption capacities was above 90 % at pH = 4. Cd(II) and As(V) were synergistic and competitive adsorption. The results of μ-XRF, XANES and XPS showed that Cd(II) was adsorbed by SBNa800 in the forms of Cd(OH)₂, CdCO₃, Cd₅H₂(AsO₄)₄·4 H₂O, CdCl₂·2.5 H₂O and Cd(NO₃)₂. About 52.79-64.61 % As(V) was reduced to As(III) by Fe(0) on SBNa800 and then adsorbed. The adsorption mechanisms of Cd(II), As(V) and As(III) were hydrogen bonding/electrostatic attraction, inner-sphere complexation and precipitation. The saturation magnetisation of SBNa800, which was easy to separate from wastewater, was 6.54 emu/g. Therefore, SBNa800 can be used as a potential adsorbent to treat wastewater contaminated with Cd(II) and As(V).

The performance of left/right adrenal volume ratio and volume difference in predicting unilateral primary aldosteronism

PURPOSE

The role of computed tomography (CT) in the diagnosis of primary aldosteronism (PA) warrants attention, since the success application of adrenal venous sampling (AVS) remains limited. We aimed to investigate the value of CT-based volumetric indicators, including left-versus-right-adrenal-volume ratio (L/Rv) and left-subtract-right-adrenal-volume difference (L - Rv), in the diagnosis of unilateral primary aldosteronism (UPA).

METHODS

A retrospective case-control study included 153 patients with PA and 1272 controls. AVS was used to classify patients into bilateral disease, left-sided disease, and right-sided disease groups.

RESULTS

Adrenal gland volume on both sides of PA patients was significantly larger than controls. The optimal cutoff values of L/Rv and L - Rv were 1.417 [area under the curve (AUC) 0.864] and 1.185 (AUC 0.827), respectively, for the diagnosis of left-sided PA, and 1.030 (AUC 0.767) and 0.220 (AUC 0.769), respectively, for the diagnosis of right-sided PA. The mean AUC for subsequent cross-validation ranged from 0.77 ± 0.03 to 0.86 ± 0.02. Based on the optimal cutoff values, the combination of L/Rv and L - Rv detected 69.6% of patients with left-sided PA and 74.3% of patients with right-sided PA, with a specificity of 93.5% and 89.0%, respectively. For a better clinical application, we reported the sub-optimal cutoffs corresponding to a specificity of 95%. A L/Rv higher than 1.431 and a L - Rv higher than 3.185 as sub-optimal cutoff values was detected in 26.1% of patients with left-sided PA (specificity: 97.2%). A L/Rv smaller than 0.892 and a L - Rv smaller than -0.640 could detect 48.6% of patients with right-sided PA (specificity: 97.5%).

CONCLUSIONS

CT-based L/Rv and L - Rv performed well in predicting UPA. The combination of L/Rv and L - Rv may serve as a potential indicator for guiding surgical decision making in centers without AVS programs.

Ni-Ti Intercalated and Supported Bentonite for Selective Hydrogenation of Cinnamaldehyde

Ni-Ti intercalated bentonite catalysts (Ni-Ti-bentonite) and Ni-TiO₂ supported bentonite catalysts (Ni-TiO₂ /bentonite) were prepared, and the effects of Ni-Ti supported and intercalated bentonite on the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde were investigated. Ni-Ti intercalated bentonite enhanced the Brønsted acid sites strength, decreased the acid amount and Lewis's acid sites strength, which inhibited the activation of the C=O bond and contributed to selective hydrogenation of the C=C bond. When Ni-TiO₂ was supported on bentonite, the acid amount and Lewis's acid strength of the catalyst increased, providing additional adsorption sites and increased the acetals byproducts. Due to the higher surface area, mesoporous volume, and suitable acidity, compared with Ni-TiO₂ /bentonite in methanol solvent, 2 MPa, 120 °C for 1 h, Ni-Ti-bentonite exhibited a higher cinnamaldehyde (CAL) conversion of 98.8 %, as well as a higher hydrocinnamaldehyde (HCAL) selectivity of 95 %, and no acetals were found in the product.

Understanding the microfluidic generation of double emulsion droplets with alginate shell

The monodisperse double emulsions obtained by microfluidic method can serve as ideal templates for preparing core-shell alginate microcapsules, which have attracted much attention in biological applications, such as drug delivery systems and cell encapsulation, tissue engineering. However, the formation behavior and dynamic analysis of double emulsion with an alginate shell is still unclear due to the complex rheological behavior of alginate solutions. Herein, we employ a dual-coaxial microfluidic device to generate the high-quality double emulsion droplets with alginate shell, focusing on the effects of the fluid properties of alginate solution in the middle phase (viscosity, μ_m) and the fluid flow rate on the droplet formation mechanism. As the viscosity of the middle fluid (μ_m) increased, the size of compound droplets (D₂) increased and the size of inner droplets (D₁) decreased, and the break-up regimes occurred a dripping-to-jetting transition when μ_m = 160 mPa s. The number of encapsulated inner droplets can be predicted and precisely controlled by regulating the generation frequency of inner (f₁) and outer droplets (f₂). The breakup dynamics of the alginate thread are also analyzed by using the volume-of-fluid/continuum-surface-force (VOF/CSF) method. The results show that the pressure and velocity in the neck of pinch-off is lower in the jetting than that in the dripping regime. This study will provide useful guidance for the rational design and controllable preparation of core-shell alginate microcapsules.

Genomics for the characterization of the mechanisms of microbial strains in degrading petroleum pollutants

Four petroleum-tolerant bacteria, namely, Pseudomonas hibiscicola, Enterobacter hormaechei, Rhizobium pusense and Pseudomonas japonica were isolated. These strains showed excellent performance in the remediation of petroleum contamination with degradation percentages of 26.13%, 26.47%, 32.27%, and 18.74% for petroleum hydrocarbons, 29.63%, 70.11%, 88.38%, and 67.03% for n-docosane, and 61.00%, 96.36%, 98.00%, and 67.01% for fluorene. Accordingly, the strain of Rhizobium pusense was used to further study its underlying degradation mechanism. N-docosane could be metabolised through the pathway of subterminal oxidation by Rhizobium pusense, while the main pathway for fluorene metabolism is the meta-cleavage. R. pusense contains 10 genes that are involved in the synthetic of biosurfactants and 71 genes that are involved in the metabolism of petroleum hydrocarbons and organic pollutants, such as hydrocarbons, toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene and naphthalene. This study was the first to determine that concerning the metabolism ability and metabolic genes of R. pusense for petroleum pollutant degradation, which is important for understanding the bioremediation mechanism of petroleum pollution.

Characterization of Modified Mechanically Activated Cassava Starch Magnetic Porous Microspheres and Its Adsorption for Cd(II) Ions

The magnetic polymer microsphere is a promising adsorbent due to its high adsorption efficiency and good regeneration ability from wastewater. Cassava starch magnetic porous microspheres (AAM-MSMPMs) were synthesized by graft copolymerization in inverse emulsion. Mechanically activated cassava starch (MS) was used to graft skeletons, vinyl monomers [acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM)] as copolymerized unsaturated monomers, methyl methacrylate (MMA) as the dispersing agent, and polyethylene glycol/methanol (PEG2000/MeOH) as the porogen. It was found that the AAM-MSMPM adsorbent is superparamagnetic, the saturation magnetization is 14.9 emu·g^-1, and it can be rapidly and directionally separated from Cd(II) ions in aqueous solution. The FTIR indicated that the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups were grafted into MS. The AAM-MSMPM had good speroidization and a uniform size. After the porogen was added, the particle size of the AAM-MSMPM decreased from 19.00 to 7.00 nm, and the specific surface area increased from 7.00 to 35.00 m²·g^-1. The pore volume increased from 0.03 to 0.13 cm³·g^-1. The AAM-MSMPM exhibited a large specific surface area and provided more adsorption active sites for Cd(II) ions. The maximum adsorption capacity of the AAM-MSMPM for Cd(II) ions was 210.68 mg·g^-1, i.e., 81.02% higher than that without porogen. Additionally, the Cd(II) ion adsorption process on the AAM-MSMPM can be described by Langmuir isothermal and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. A chemical reaction dominated the Cd(II) ion adsorption process on the AAM-MSMPM, and chemisorption was the rate-controlling step during the Cd(II) ion adsorption process. The AAM-MSMPM still had excellent stability after five consecutive reuses.

Salicylic acid functionalized zein for improving plant stress resistance and as a nanopesticide carrier with enhanced anti-photolysis ability

BACKGROUND

There is a serious global problem of salinization of arable land, causing large reduction in world food production. Use of plant hormones is an effective way to reduce damage caused to crops and salt stress.

RESULTS

In this study, PEI-EDA was modified with AM-zein and grafted with plant hormone SA (AM-zein-SA) and used as a nano-pesticide carrier to load emamectin benzoate (EB). The use of AM-zein-SA as a nano-pesticide carrier could reduce the damage caused by salt stress to crops. The structure of AM-zein-SA was characterized by FTIR, UV, fluorescence, Raman, and ¹H NMR spectroscopic techniques. AM-zein-SA could effectively improve the resistance of EB to ultraviolet radiations, resistance of cucumber to salt stress, and the absorption of EB by plants. The experimental results showed that AM-zein-SA could effectively improve the anti-UV property of EB by 0.88 fold. When treated with 120 mmol NaCl, the germination rate of cucumber seeds under salt stress increased by 0.93 fold in presence of 6.25 mg/L carrier concentration. The POD and SOD activities increased by 0.50 and 1.21 fold, whereas the content of MDA decreased by 0.23 fold. In conclusion, AM-zein-SA nano-pesticide carrier could be used to improve the salt resistance of crops and the adhesion of pesticides to leaves.

CONCLUSION

AM-zein-SA, without undergoing any changes in its insecticidal activity, could simultaneously improve the salt stress resistance and salt stress germination rate of cucumber, reduce growth inhibition due to stress under high-concentration salt, and had a good effect on crops. In addition, EB@AM-zein-SA obviously improved the upward transmission rate of EB, as compared with EB. In this study, SA was grafted onto zein-based nano-pesticide carrier, which provided a green strategy to control plant diseases, insects, and pests while reducing salt stress on crops in saline-alkali soil.

Invasive fungal infection is associated with antibiotic exposure in preterm infants: a multi-centre prospective case-control study

BACKGROUND

Previous antibiotic exposure is an important risk factor for invasive fungal infection (IFI). Antibiotic overexposure is common in lower-income countries; however, multi-centre studies concerning IFI in relation to antibiotic exposure are scarce.

AIM

This prospective, multi-centre matched case-control study explored the correlation of IFI and antibiotic exposure in very preterm infants or very-low-birthweight infants admitted to 23 tertiary hospitals in China between 2018 and 2021.

METHODS

Using a 1:2 matched design for gestational age, birth weight and early-onset sepsis (yes/no), the risk factors between infants diagnosed with IFI and infection-free controls were compared. The antibiotic use rate (AUR) was calculated using calendar days of antibiotic therapy in the 4 weeks preceding IFI onset divided by onset day of IFI.

FINDINGS

In total, 6368 infants were included in the study, of which 90 (1.4%) were diagnosed with IFI. Median AUR, length of antibiotic therapy (LOT) and days of antibiotic therapy (DOT) within the 4 weeks preceding IFI onset were 0.90, 18 days and 30 days, respectively. Multi-variate analysis showed that a 10% increase in AUR, each additional day of DOT and LOT, and each additional day of third-generation cephalosporins and carbapenems were notably associated with IFI.

CONCLUSION

Prolonged antibiotic therapy is common before the onset of IFI, and is an important risk factor, especially the use of third-generation cephalosporins and carbapenems. Antibiotic stewardship should be urgently developed and promoted for preterm infants in order to reduce IFI in lower-income countries such as China.

Tuning the olefin-VOCs epoxidation performance of ceria by mechanochemical loading of coinage metal

Under the background of carbon dioxide emission reduction, how to realize the treatment and the high value-added conversion of typical olefin volatile organic compounds (olefin-VOCs), such as styrene, is a big challenge. In this contribution, the ceria-supported coinage metal catalysts (M/CeO₂, M = Au, Ag, and Cu) are successfully synthesized by a dry mechanochemical method, and their catalytic performance for styrene-VOC epoxidation with tert-butyl hydrogen peroxide (TBHP) as an oxidant to prepare high-value styrene oxide (SO) is investigated. The oxygen vacancies of ceria play a key role in the anchoring of metal nanoparticles. After ball milling, Au(III) is partially reduced and coexists on ceria in two valence states (Au³⁺ and Au⁰), and the reactive oxygen species of the as-prepared catalyst are enhanced. The catalytic behaviors, including solvents effect, substrate concentration, oxidant ratio, catalyst dosage, reaction time, and temperature, are systematically investigated. Au/CeO₂ exhibits good styrene epoxidation performance with a total styrene conversion of 94% and a SO yield of 63%, along with good reusability and substrate scalability. Thermodynamics and kinetics show that Au/CeO₂ was more favorable for styrene epoxidation and this reaction is dominated by the rate of intrinsic chemical reactions on the surface of the catalyst. Based on experimental discussions and a set of characterizations (XPS, XRD, in-situ FT-IR, ESR, ESI-HSMS, etc.), the mechanism is revealed as the synergistic catalysis between the reactive oxygen species of Au/CeO₂ and the peroxide radicals generated by the homolysis of TBHP.

Highly Efficient Fabrication of Kilogram-Scale Palladium Single-Atom Catalysts for the Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling Reaction

Palladium single-atom catalysts (SACs) have caught great attention owing to their maximal atom utilization and outstanding activity for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. However, a facile manufacturing method for kilogram-scale synthesis of noble metal SACs with high productivity is still in demand. This study reports on the synthesis of SACs by direct ball milling of commercial metal oxides and nitrate precursors with a productivity of ∼100%. The as-prepared Pd₁/FeO_x SACs show high catalytic performance (the TOFs are 7844 h^-1), high stability, and general applicability for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction under mild conditions. More encouragingly, kilogram-scale Pd₁/FeO_x SACs can be synthesized in one batch by this approach, endowing great potential for industrial applications. Furthermore, the preparation of Pt, Ru, and Rh SACs is also successfully carried out via the ball milling method, demonstrating favorable applicability. Our findings illustrate exciting chances presented by the highly efficient synthesis of SACs for the formation of C-C bonds.

Distinct structural strategies with similar functional responses of abundant and rare subcommunities regarding heavy metal pollution in the Beiyun river basin

Bacteria within a metacommunity could be partitioned into different subcommunities ecological assemblages in light of potential importance for the community function. It is unknown how abundant and rare microbial subcommunities in urban river sediments respond to heavy metal pollutants. Using high-throughput sequencing, we analyzed these response patterns in the heavliy polluted (Beijing, China). We found that this river faces substantial ecological risks, owing to high rates of Cd and Hg pollution from urban activities. Surprisingly, abundant and rare subcommunity structures showed opposite responses to heavy metals. Abundant taxa, such as Crenarchaeota and Euryarchaeota, are resistant to heavy metal pollution through the synergistic of ammonia nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N) and total phosphorus (TP). By contrast, rare taxa, such as Verrucomicrobia, Fibrobacteres, Berkelbacteria, and Euryarchaeota, had a high synergy with NH₄⁺-N and TP with high a resilience to heavy metal pollution. However, the functions of both abundant and rare subcommunities showed a similar response to heavy metal pollutants, especially in denitrification processes. The abundant taxa responded to heavy metal pollution through methanogenesis by CO₂ reduction with H₂, human pathogens nosocomia, sulfate respiration, photoheterotrophy, and dark sulfide oxidation synergy with NH₄⁺-N and TP. The rare taxa responded to heavy metals through methanogenesis by CO₂ reduction with H₂, cellulolysis, sulfate respiration, intracellular parasites, nitrate reduction and plant pathogen. We observed distinct patterns between the structural and functional responses of microbial subcommunities to heavy metal pollutants. Our findings support the concept that denitrification processes are sensitive to but not inhibited by high levels of heavy metals pollution. We propose that the structures and functions of the abundant and rare microbial subcommunities could inform the management of pollutants in heavily polluted urban river ecosystems at fine geographical scales.

Elements and Pb isotopic composition as evidence for contaminant-metal dispersal in surficial soil and sediment of drinking water source in Beijing, China

Pb pollution in soils and sediments has adverse effects on human health and the environment. Identifying and quantifying the relative contribution of Pb pollution sources are key issues to control Pb pollution. In this study, U, Th and Pb concentration, Pb enrichment coefficient and Pb isotopic composition in the sediment and surface soil samples of the Miyun Reservoir and its upstream Chaohe, Baihe and Tanghe River were analysed to determine the source and relative contribution of Pb pollution. Results show a significant enrichment of Pb in the sediments of the Baihe River (2.7 ± 0.9). The enrichment of Pb in the soils in Baihe (8.0 ± 10.5) and Tanghe (313.3 ± 1139.4) is more obvious, and Pb is unevenly distributed in the soil in the Tanghe Basin. In general, soil is more seriously affected by human activities than sediment. The Pb isotope ratio indicates that mining activities and natural background are the main sources of Pb in soil and sediment. Based on the binary mixture model, the average contribution rate of mining activities to Pb pollution in the sediment is 21.5%, of which the contribution rates in the Miyun Reservoir, Chaohe, Baihe and Tanghe River are 14.86%, 17.20%, 41.03% and 26.32%, respectively. The average contribution rate of mining activities to soil Pb is 43.1%, among which the contribution rates in the Chaohe River Basin, Baihe River Basin and Tanghe River Basin are 58.79%, 60.98% and 36.24%, respectively. In summary, soils and sediments in the basin are affected by mining activities to varying degrees. Nevertheless, natural background is still the main source of Pb in the sediments in the basin and in soil in the Tanghe River. Mining activities are the main sources of Pb in soils in the Chaohe and Baihe River.

Crystallization Thermodynamics of α-Lactose Monohydrate in Different Solvents

It is common to find that some of the lactose in dairy powders and pharmaceutical tablets is present in the unstable amorphous state. Therefore, their crystallization thermodynamics in different solvents are particularly important. In this paper, the solubility of α-lactose monohydrate (α-LM) in 15 mono-solvents such as ethanol, isopropanol, methanol, 1-propanol, 1-butanol, 2-butanol, isobutanol, 1-pentanol, isoamylol, 1-hexanol, 1-heptanol, 1-octanol, propanoic acid, acetonitrile, and cyclohexanone was evaluated by using the gravimetric method in the temperature ranges from 274.05 K to 323.05 K at constant pressure (1 atm). In the given temperature range, the solubility of α-LM in these solvents increased with the rising of temperature, the highest solubility of α-LM was found in methanol (2.37 × 104), and the lowest was found in 1-hexanol (0.80 × 105). In addition, the increase of α-LM solubility in isopropanol was the largest. The sequence at 298.15 K was: methanol > 1-butanol > isopropanol > ethanol > 1-propanol > 1-heptanol > isobutanol > propionic acid > 1-pentanol > 1-octanol > acetonitrile > isoamylol > 2-butanol > cyclohexanone > 1-hexanol. Solvent effect analysis shows that the properties of α-LM are more important than those of solvents. The Apelblat equation, λh equation, Wilson model, and NRTL model were used to correlate the experimental values. The root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) and relative average deviation (RAD) of all models were less than 2.68 × 10−2 and 1.41 × 10−6, respectively, implying that the fitted values of four thermodynamic models all agreed well with the experimental values. Moreover, the thermodynamic properties of the dissolution process (i.e., dissolution Gibbs free energy (ΔdisG), molar enthalpy (ΔdisH), and molar entropy (ΔdisS)) for α-LM in selected solvents were determined. The results indicate that ΔdisH/(J/mol) (from 0.2551 to 6.0575) and ΔdisS/(J/mol/K) (from 0.0010 to 0.0207) of α-LM in these solvents are all positive, and the values of ΔdisH and ΔdisS. ΔdisG/(J/mol) (from −0.0184 to −0.6380) are all negative. The values were observed to decrease with rising temperatures, implying that α-LM dissolution is an endothermic, entropy-driven, and spontaneous process. The solid−liquid equilibrium data and dissolution thermodynamics of α-LM were obtained, which provide a basis for industrial production.

Quasi-Orthogonal Configuration of Propylene within a Scalable Metal-Organic Framework Enables Its Purification from Quinary Propane Dehydrogenation Byproducts

Propylene production via nonoxidative propane dehydrogenation (PDH) holds great promise in meeting growing global demand for propylene. Effective adsorptive purification of a low concentration of propylene from quinary PDH byproducts comprising methane (CH₄), ethylene (C₂H₄), ethane (C₂H₆), propylene (C₃H₆), and propane (C₃H₈) has been an unsolved academic bottleneck. Herein, we now report an ultramicroporous zinc metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF, termed as 1) underlying a rigid one-dimensional channel, enabling trace C₃H₆ capture and effective separation from quinary PDH byproducts. Adsorption isotherms of 1 suggest a record-high C₃H₆ uptake of 34.0/92.4 cm³ cm^-3 (0.01/0.1 bar) at 298 K. In situ spectroscopies, crystallographic experiments, and modeling have jointly elucidated that the outstanding propylene uptakes at lower pressure are dominated by multiple binding interactions and swift diffusion behavior, yielding quasi-orthogonal configuration of propylene in adaptive channels. Breakthrough tests demonstrate that 30.8 L of propylene with a serviceable purity of 95.0-99.4% can be accomplished from equimolar C₃H₆/C₃H₈ mixtures for 1 kg of activated 1. Such an excellent property is also validated by the breakthrough tests of quinary mixtures containing CH₄/C₂H₄/C₂H₆/C₃H₆/C₃H₈ (3/5/6/42/44, v/v/v/v/v). Particularly, structurally stable 1 can be easily synthesized on the kilogram scale using cheap materials (only $167 for per kilogram of 1), which is important in industrial applications.

Systematic review of adjuvant external beam radiotherapy for hepatocellular carcinoma following radical hepatectomy

BACKGROUND AND AIM

Recurrence remains the main bottleneck hindering outcomes of hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Owing to technological advances, external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) is being increasingly used in the management of HCC; however, there is no consensus on the role of adjuvant EBRT following hepatectomy.

METHODS

A systematic review was conducted according to the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis. PubMed, MedLine, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Web of Knowledge were used to screen eligible studies (published as of May 1st, 2022) that evaluated the clinical safety and efficacy of EBRT for HCC receiving hepatectomy. The endpoints were disease-free survival (DFS), overall survival (OS), and adverse events (AEs).

RESULTS

A total of ten studies were eligible (three randomized controlled trials, one phase II trial, and six retrospective comparative studies). The pooled hazard ratio (HR) for median DFS and OS were both in favor of adjuvant EBRT compared with surgery alone (all P<0.05), and the advantage of adjuvant EBRT was also confirmed in subgroups stratified by different populations (narrow margin, P<0.05; microvascular invasion, P<0.05; portal vein tumor thrombus, P<0.05) and study designs (prospective studies, P<0.05; retrospective studies, P<0.05). Adjuvant EBRT was also found to be superior to adjuvant TACE (P<0.05). Pooled rates of overall AEs and severe AEs were 65.3% and 12.2%, but no fatal AEs were reported.

CONCLUSION

Adjuvant EBRT can be considered for HCC patients, especially those with a high risk of recurrence. Further studies are required for validation of these findings.
