Abstract
1. The objective of this study was to investigate the protective effects of a peptidoglycan produced by Limosilactobacillus reuteri against aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) induced toxicity in vitro and in vivo in broiler chicks.2. Toxin adsorption experiments were carried out firstly in vitro. These experiments indicated that the absorption efficiency of the peptidoglycan for AFB1 was 64.3-75.9%.3. In the in vivo experiments, Hy-Line Brown chicks were fed a diet containing AFB1 at 71.43 µg/kg with and without peptidoglycan supplementation at concentrations of 100, 200, or 300 g/kg feed from 0-42 d of age.4. The peptidoglycan supplementation in AFB1-contaminated diets resulted in significant improvements in terms of average daily gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, white blood cell count, haemoglobin content, glutathione peroxidase activity, immunoglobulin (Ig) A, IgG, IgM and Newcastle disease virus antibody titres (p < 0.05) and diminished liver steatosis.5. In conclusion, peptidoglycan supplementation alleviated AFB1-induced toxicity through adsorbing toxins and improving growth performance, antioxidant ability, immunity and liver pathological changes in chicks. The optimal supplemental dose was 200 mg/kg in feed.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is caused by a complex interaction between genetic and environmental factors. However, how the role of peripheral organ changes in response to environmental stimuli during aging in AD pathogenesis remains unknown. Hepatic soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) activity increases with age. Hepatic sEH manipulation bidirectionally attenuates brain amyloid-β (Aβ) burden, tauopathy, and cognitive deficits in AD mouse models. Moreover, hepatic sEH manipulation bidirectionally regulates the plasma level of 14,15-epoxyeicosatrienoic acid (-EET), which rapidly crosses the blood-brain barrier and modulates brain Aβ metabolism through multiple pathways. A balance between the brain levels of 14,15-EET and Aβ is essential for preventing Aβ deposition. In AD models, 14,15-EET infusion mimicked the neuroprotective effects of hepatic sEH ablation at biological and behavioral levels. These results highlight the liver's key role in AD pathology, and targeting the liver-brain axis in response to environmental stimuli may constitute a promising therapeutic approach for AD prevention.

Abstract
There are still many controversies in the surgical treatment of esophagogastric junction tumors in terms of surgical approach, cleaning range, and resection scope. The reason is the confusion about the scope of the esophagogastric junction. The previous domestic and foreign anatomy descriptions of this part are not enough to solve the current problems. Based on a large number of basic anatomy and clinical operations, this article proposes that the esophagogastric junction may be wrapped by a complete and separate esophagogastric junction membrane with independent anatomy other than infracardiac bursa. The structure of the transitional tissue, mainly from the distribution of submucosal veins, explained the relationship and significance of tissue transitional changes and clinical operations, and made a reasonable analysis of the current controversy based on the anatomical characteristics, which is worthy of further investigation.

Abstract
Recipients who detect hepatitis C virus (HCV) ribonucleic acid during the liver transplantation will promptly infect the transplanted liver, so it is called recurrent HCV after liver transplantation. HCV recurrence can lead to the progression of fibrosis and cirrhosis to the transplanted liver, and thereby significantly reduce the transplanted liver survival rate. Therefore, the effective elimination of HCV is the key to improve the patients' prognosis. Patients should receive antiviral therapy as long as HCV RNA can be detected after liver transplantation, and treatment should be stopped as soon as the disease condition stabilizes. Currently, highly safe pan-genotypic direct-acting antiviral drugs (DAA) have been recommended to patients after liver transplantation, as their interaction with immunosuppressive drugs (DDI) is minimal. Clinically, different treatment scheme should be selected according to the hepatorenal function, and DDIs of the patient. This article reviews the current situation and progress of antiviral treatment for HCV infection after liver transplantation.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate whether there were differences between apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values derived from 3.0 T and 1.5 T MR diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in liver of patients with chronic hepatitis B. Methods: From January 2016 to November 2016, a total of 40 chronic hepatitis B prospectively underwent both 1.5 T and 3.0 T DWI before liver biopsy, the interval between two scans was within 15 minutes, the protocol was respiratory-triggered DWI(RT-DWI). The ADC values were measured at both field strengths using ROI method. Bland-Altman tests and paired t-tests were used to compare ADC values obtained at 1.5 T and 3.0 T. Results: The ADC values of different b values for patients with mild inflammation at 1.5 T were(1.22-1.48(1.35±0.08)×10(-3) mm(2)/s), the ADC values of different b values for patients with mild inflammation at 3.0 T were(1.18-1.45(1.30±0.08)×10(-3) mm(2)/s); the ADC values of different b values for patients with moderate to severe inflammation at 1.5 T were(1.11-1.37(1.25±0.06)×10(-3) mm(2)/s), the ADC values of different b values for patients with moderate to severe inflammation at 3.0 T were(1.08-1.31(1.20±0.06)×10(-3) mm(2)/s). There were significantly differences between the ADC values of different b values for patients with chronic hepatitis B obtained at two field strengths (P<0.01). Conclusions: Different field strengths have influence on ADC values in liver, the ADC values derived from 3.0 T are lower than the ADC values derived from 1.5 T.

Abstract
Objective: To study the correlation between ADC values of diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) and the pathological grading in inflammation activity of chronic hepatitis B, and combined with conventional MRI features to predict the diagnosis effectiveness. Methods: A total of 142 cases of patients with chronic hepatitis B were selected as inflammatory group in 302 Hospital of PLA from January 2014 to December 2015, while 20 cases of healthy subjects without history of liver disease were chosen as control group. All patients underwent MR plain scan and dynamic contrast enhancement and DWI examinations (b=0, 800 s/mm(2)) for liver, and were performed liver biopsy within two days.According to the degree of inflammation activity (G), the inflammation group was divided into G1, G2 and G3-4 level. The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value, and the MRI features of each group were analyzed. Results: The ADC values showed statistical difference (F=8.392, P<0.01) within inflammation group of chronic hepatitis B from different pathologic grading, and there was significant negative correlation between ADC values and liver inflammation activity grading (r=-0.613, P<0.01). The ADC value of inflammation group and control group was (1.31±0.16), (1.12±0.15)×10(-3) mm(2)/s, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). The ADC value of G1, G2 and G3-4 level was (1.22±0.12), (1.05±0.12), (0.98±0.10)×10(-3) mm(2)/s respectively, and there was statistical difference (P<0.05) between G1 and G2, G1 and G3-4. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve in diagnosis of equal and above G2 level showed the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.880, the sensitivity and the specificity was 82.4% and 76.8% respectively, the diagnostic cut-off value was 1.09×10(-3) mm(2)/s.Besides, the detection rate of portal around its orbit and gallbladder wall edema in inflammation group had statistical difference (P<0.05), and there was no statistical difference in the detection rate of abnormal liver arterial enhancement, hilus lymph node increases and ascites in inflammation group(P>0.05). The ROC in diagnosis of equal and above G2 level by ADC values combined with the MRI characteristic signs showed AUC was 0.938, the sensitivity and the specificity was 88.4% and 88.9% respectively. Conclusions: ADC values can predict the inflammation activity of chronic hepatitis B with quantitatively and non-invasively.Combining with characteristic MRI signs, ADC values can improve the diagnosis efficiency.

Abstract
As the IL-12 family plays an important role in immune regulation, it arouses the attention of the researchers increasingly. There are mainly four members in the IL-12 family, including IL-12, IL-23, IL-27 and IL-35 at present. The family members share many similar structures, but they have their own distinctive biological characteristics and play different roles to balance the functional effects of their own family. IL-12 and IL-23 are positive regulators and mainly play pro-inflammatory effect while IL-27 and IL-35 are negative regulators and mainly play anti-inflammatory effect. Thus, IL-12 family plays an important role in the regulation of the immune response and this function may be better than other cytokine family. IL-12 family has an important regulatory effect on multiple T cell subsets and also has an impact on their differentiation and function. So, we postulate that the IL-12 family may have an intense relationship with the generation and development of the allergic rhinitis. This article will mainly talk about the unique structure and role of the IL-12 cytokine family and discuss its immune regulation effect in the allergic rhinitis.

Abstract
We used a meta-analysis approach to investigate the association between proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use and risk of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) in cirrhotic patients. We searched Ovid Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane Library to identify eligible studies. We included studies that compared cirrhotic patients who did or did not use PPIs. The primary outcome was SBP, and the secondary outcome was overall bacterial infection. Results were pooled using random-effect models. This process led to identification of 12 journal articles and 5 conference abstracts. The pooled data showed that PPI use in patients with cirrhosis and ascites was significantly associated with an increased risk of SBP [odds ratio (OR) = 2.17; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.46-3.23; P < 0.05; I2 = 85.6%] and overall risk of bacterial infection (OR = 1.98; 95%CI = 1.36-2.87; P < 0.05; I2 = 0). Subgroup analysis revealed that journal articles and studies reporting adjusted effect estimates demonstrated that PPI users had a significantly increased risk of SBP (OR = 2.13; 95%CI = 1.61-2.82; P < 0.05; I2 = 29.4%; and OR = 1.98; 95%CI = 1.42-2.77; P < 0.05; I2 = 67%, respectively). In conclusion, PPI use increased the risk of SBP and overall bacterial infection in patients with cirrhosis and ascites. PPIs should be administered after careful assessment of the indications in cirrhotic patients. Future well-designed prospective studies are warranted to clarify the dose relationships and to compare infection risks associated with different classes of PPIs.

Abstract
We conducted a hospital-based case-control study to assess the association between IL-10-592 A/C, IL-10-819 C/T, and IL-10-1082 A/G polymorphisms and the risk of liver cirrhosis in a Chinese population. This 1:1-matched case-control study included 192 patients from the Chinese PLA General Hospital. Genotypes of IL-10-592 A/C, IL-10-819 C/T, and IL-10-1082 A/G were detected by polymerase chain reaction amplification-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. Conditional regression analysis showed that individuals carrying the IL-10-1082 G allele had an only slightly increased risk of liver cirrhosis, with an adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of 2.14 (0.97-1.68). However, we did not identify a significant association between polymorphisms in IL-10-592 A/C and IL-10-819 C/T and the risk of liver cirrhosis. These findings may provide important clues for future studies of early detection screening of liver cirrhosis.

Abstract
Biliary cystadenoma (BCA) and biliary cystadenocarcinoma (BCAC) are rare biliary duct neoplasms. This study investigated reasonable management strategies of cystic neoplasms in the liver. Charts of 39 BCA/BCAC patients (9 males, 30 female; median age 53.74 ± 14.50 years) who underwent surgery from January 1999 to December 2009 were reviewed retrospectively. Cyst fluid samples of 32 BCA/BCAC patients and 40 simple hepatic cyst patients were examined for the tumor markers carbohydrate associated antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). The most frequent symptoms were abdominal pain (N = 10), abdominal mass (N = 7), abdominal distension (N = 4), jaundice (N = 2), and fever (N = 3); the remaining patients showed no clinical symptoms. Liver resection (N = 17) or enucleation (N = 22) was performed in the 39 patients. Ultimately, 35 patients were diagnosed with intrahepatic BCA and four patients were diagnosed with BCAC. The median CA19-9 level was significantly higher in BCA/BCAC patients than in simple hepatic cyst patients. The median CEA levels in BCA/BCAC patients and controls were 6.83 ± 2.43 and 4.21 ± 2.91 mg/L, respectively. All symptoms were resolved after surgery, and only one BCAC patient showed recurrence. The incidence of intrahepatic cystic lesions was 1.7%. Increased CA19-9 levels in the cyst fluid is a helpful marker for distinguishing BCA/BCAC from common simple cysts. The presence of coarse calcifications is suggestive of BCAC. Complete surgical removal of these lesions yielded satisfying long-term outcomes with a very low recurrence rate.

Abstract
A new tospovirus, HCRV 2007-ZDH, was isolated from a Hippeastrum sp. plant displaying necrotic and chlorotic ringspot symptoms in Yunnan province. This virus isolate was characterized based on particle morphology and RNA sequences analyses. Quasi-spherical, enveloped particles measuring about 70-100 nm, typical of tospoviruses, were observed in sap and cells of the infected plants. Transmission studies by inoculating this isolate mechanically to Hippeastrum sp. confirmed that 2007-ZDH is the causal agent of the chlorotic ringspot disease of Hippeastrum sp. The complete sequence of S RNA of 2007-ZDH was 2,744 nucleotides in length, sharing 74.4 % nucleotide identity with Tomato yellow ring virus (TYRV) isolate tomato (AY686718). The S RNA encoded a non-structural protein (NSs) (444 aa, 50.4 kDa) and the nucleocapsid (N) protein (273 aa, 30.1 kDa).The deduced NSs protein shared amino acid identities of 78.6, 76.3, and 74.9 % with that of TYRV, IYSV, and PolRSV, respectively. The deduced N protein shared amino acid identities of 86.1, 84.7, and 70.0 % with that of PolRSV, TYRV, and IYSV, respectively. These results suggest that the chlorotic ringspot virus belongs to a new tospovirus species, for which the name Hippeastrum chlorotic ringspot virus (HCRV) is proposed.

With the development of evidence-based medicine (EBM), the concept of "transfer of current best evidence into clinical decision-making" has garnered substantial attention worldwide. As such a good tool, many clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have been published worldwide under the guide of current best evidence. Our study did a systematic evaluation of the current 17 guidelines for HCC worldwide, which found that the appropriate constructing approach is the most important factor that influences guidelines implementation. Three factors of organizations or bodies drafting the guideline, exploration for achieving current best evidence, and purpose of constructing evidence-based CPGs for HCC should be paid close attention to. In order to achieve the current best evidence and promote evidence-based CPGs to be widely accepted and fully implemented, we recommend to conduct a systematic approach with 4 steps of global guidelines assessment, systematic literature review, experts' consensus and draft implementation, as well as implementation evaluation and periodic update in constructing and implementing evidence-based CPGs for HCC.

[PMID: 21693271 DOI: 10.1016/j.transproceed.2010.11.025] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.1] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/24/2009] [Revised: 10/07/2010] [Accepted: 11/03/2010] [Indexed: 01/22/2023]
Abstract
AIM The aim was to deduce suitable calcineurin inhibitor concentrations for the Chinese liver transplantation population. METHODS We retrospectively studied 97 liver transplant recipients who displayed stable liver and renal function. No grafts were obtained from prisoners, procurements were performed with donor consent conforming to international ethics regulations. At 3, 6, and 12 months, we increased the concentrations and doses of calcineurin inhibitors as well as the values of alanine transaminase and serum creatinine. RESULTS Twenty-eight recipients received cyclosporine and 69 tacrolimus. The mean cyclosporine daily dosages were 203 ± 62 mg at 3, 188 ± 55 mg at 6, and 173 ± 52 mg at 12 months, the tacrolimus daily dosages were 3.08 ± 0.98, 2.82 ± 0.98, and 2.58 ± 0.93 mg, respectively. The corresponding mean cyclosporine peak concentrations (C(2)) were 806 ± 322 ng/mL, 681 ± 206 ng/mL, and 644 ± 190 ng/mL and the mean tacrolimus trought concentrations (C(0)) 6.61 ± 3.02 ng/mL, 5.85 ± 2.44 ng/mL, and 5.22 ± 2.33 ng/mL, respectively. In both groups, transaminases and serum creatinine were stable over time. CONCLUSIONS An individualized immunosuppressive regimen for the local population is necessary. We delayed calcineurin inhibitors with subsequent low-dose mycophenolate mofetil plus minimized calcineurin inhibitors, which seemed to be nephroprotective and safe for Chinese liver transplantation patients.

First Report of Kidney Bean Little Leaf Disease Associated with 16SrII Group Phytoplasma in China. PLANT DISEASE 2010; 94:132. Abstract
Kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) is an important cash crop in China. It is widely grown in the Yunnan Province in the southwest region. In November of 2008, a new disease was observed on kidney bean plants grown in Yuanmou County. Affected plants displayed symptoms that included numerous twisted lateral shoots with abundant, tiny trifoliate leaves that were approximately one-tenth the size of healthy leaves. Some affected leaves, which were slightly distorted and oblong to oval, were evident on diseased plants and appeared pale green. On plants with little leaf symptoms, flowers were poorly formed, withered or aborted, and no pods were present. Surveys conducted in areas affected by disease revealed the presence of the disease in approximately 10% of the plants. DNA was extracted from 0.1 g of petioles and midveins harvested from both diseased and symptomless plants with the Qiagen DNeasy Plant Mini Kit (Qiagen, Hilden, Germany). Plants were evaluated for phytoplasma infection by a nested PCR assay with phytoplasma specific ribosomal operon primer pair P1/Tint followed by R16F2/R16R2 (2,3). An rDNA product of approximately 1,250 bp was amplified from seven of seven diseased plants, whereas no products were amplified from symptomless plants or a negative control devoid of DNA. Digests of nested PCR products (approximately 200 ng) with endonucleases AluI, ScaI, or EcoRI revealed no differences in restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) among diseased plants. The amplicon was cloned and sequenced (GenBank Accession No. GQ336993). Comparison of in silico RFLP profiles with published profiles showed that kidney bean little leaf phytoplasma is a member of peanut witches' broom group 16SrII. Blast analysis of the kidney bean little leaf phytoplasma 16S rDNA sequence revealed that this strain is most similar (99.0%) to Syringa oblata yellows phytoplasma (Accession No. FJ263629) and to other phytoplasmas classified as group 16SrII members. Previously, phytoplasmas identified as 16SrII strains have been reported as probable cause of cactus witches' broom (1) and crotalaria witches' broom (4) in China. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a 16SrII phytoplasma infecting the kidney bean in China. References: (1) H. Cai et al. Plant Pathol. 51:394, 2002. (2) I.-M Lee et al. Abstract
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been thought of as a mitogen that promotes proliferation of endothelial cells and as a neurotrophic factor that stimulates neurogenesis and axonal growth in both peripheral and central nervous systems. To investigate the potential involvement of VEGF in the lesion-induced reorganization in the brain, the expression changes of VEGF and its receptor Flk-1 were analyzed in the mouse hippocampus after transections of the entorhinal afferents. In situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry showed the time-dependent expression upregulation of VEGF mRNA and protein in the entorhinally denervated hippocampal stratum lacunosum-moleculare and dentate outer molecular layer, which initiated by 3 days postlesion, reached its maximum at 7-15 days postlesion, still persisted by 30 days postlesion for protein, and recovered to the normal levels at 30 days postlesion for mRNA and at 60 days postlesion for protein. Double labeling of VEGF and glial fibrillary acidic protein revealed that VEGF-expressing cells in the denervated areas were reactive astrocytes. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR analysis showed that VEGF receptor Flk-1 mRNA was also time-dependently upregulated in the deafferented hippocampus with its maximal elevation at 7-15 days postlesion while the Flt-1 mRNA levels remained unchanged at any time point we examined. Immunohistochemistry analysis also displayed the upregulation of Flk-1 protein in the denervated stratum lacunosum-moleculare and outer molecular layer with a time course similar to that of VEGF mRNA upregulation. Flk-1 receptors were found to be expressed not only by reactive astrocytes but also by neurites, which most likely belong to sprouting axons by 7 days postlesion and regrowing dendrites by 15-30 days postlesion. From these data we suggest that the spatiotemporal upregulation of VEGF and Flk-1 in the hippocampus is induced by entorhinal deafferentation and that VEGF may be involved in the structural reorganization in the deafferented hippocampus via directly or indirectly promoting neurite growth.

Abstract
The content of 34 elements was determined in tissue samples of several marine bivalve species collected from various sites in the Jiaozhou Bay. The scope of the study was to determine the most suitable bivalve species to be used for environmental biomonitoring and to evaluate the environmental status of the bay. Clams exhibited higher elemental contents than oysters and they are the major marine bivalve species in the Jiaozhou Bay; therefore, we consider clams to be more suitable than oysters as bioindicators for evaluating the environmental status of the area. Increased elemental levels in clam tissues indicate polluted sites. Also, increased elemental levels in mussels point to possible pollution from tourism development at one selected site.

Elevations of hepatic quinone reductase, glutathione, and alpha- and mu-class glutathione S-transferase isoforms in mice with chronic hepatitis: a compensatory response to injury. Abstract
Hepatic levels of GSH and Phase II detoxication enzymes were compared to biochemical and histological indices of hepatic damage in 4- to 76-week-old nontransgenic mice and their transgenic littermates that overexpress the hepatitis B virus large envelope protein. The mice were fed a low-sucrose AIN-76A diet ad libitum. Hepatic-specific activities of quinone reductase (QR) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) were increased 2- to 10-fold beginning at 12 weeks of age in transgenic mice and correlated with increases in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (r = 0.84 and 0.59, respectively). Quantitative histological analysis demonstrated that apoptosis was the predominant feature in 4- to 12-week-old transgenic mice, whereas necrosis and inflammation predominated at later time points. Surprisingly, 3-fold elevations in ALT were observed beginning at 52 weeks of age in nontransgenic mice, and hepatic-specific activities of QR and GST were also modestly increased in elderly nontransgenic animals. In contrast to transgenic mice, apoptosis was not a prominent feature. The strongest histological correlates to ALT in 4- to 76-week-old nontransgenic mice were necrosis and inflammation (r > 0.96), which in turn may have been evoked by hepatic fat accumulation. Profiles of specific GST isoforms were quantitated chromatographically and identified by sequencing tryptic digests. The Ya1 subunit of alpha-class GST was markedly increased from undetectable levels in transgenic mice, while more modest increases were observed in nontransgenic mice more than 1 year old. Fivefold elevations of the Yb1 subunit, a constitutively expressed mu-class GST, were found in transgenic mice older than 4 weeks of age, while 2-fold increases were observed in nontransgenic animals that were more than 1 year old. These studies demonstrate that selected increases in Phase II detoxication enzymes are a stereotyped response to chronic hepatitis that is strikingly reminiscent of the treatment of mice with anticarcinogenic enzyme inducers.

Abstract
To detect the clinical course and possible pathogenetic factors of multiple organ failure (MOF) after severe acute pancreatitis (SAP), we investigated retrospectively 70 consecutive patients with SAP for a 16-year period. Two different patterns of MOF were identified: rapid-single phase MOF developed early after SAP attack, and delayed tow-phase MOF developed progressively and sequentially with a lag phase. The clinical course of MOF was characterized by a severely systemic inflammatory response. Clinical variables associated with the evolution of MOF included early circulatory shock, pancreatic sepsis and severe pancreatic necrosis, which might be the leading one. It is suggested that the generalized inflammatory response triggered by the toxic focus seems to be the final common pathway linking SAP with MOF syndrome.

Abstract
Cytochrome c1 from a photosynthetic bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides R-26 has been purified to homogeneity. The purified protein contains 30 nmol heme per mg protein, has an isoelectric point of 5.7, and is soluble in aqueous solution in the absence of detergents. The apparent molecular weight of this protein is about 150,000, determined by Bio Gel A-0.5 m column chromatography; a minimum molecular weight of 30,000 is obtained by sodium dodecylsulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The absorption spectrum of this cytochrome is similar to that of mammalian cytochrome c1, but the amino acid composition and circular dichroism spectral characteristics are different. The heme moiety of cytochrome c1 is more exposed than is that of mammalian cytochrome c1, but less exposed than that of cytochrome c2. Ferricytochrome c1 undergoes photoreduction upon illumination with light under anaerobic conditions. Such photoreduction is completely abolished when p-chloromercuriphenylsulfonate is added to ferricytochrome c1, suggesting that the sulfhydryl groups of cytochrome c1 are the electron donors for photoreduction. Purified cytochrome c1 contains 3 +/- 0.1 mol of the p-chloromercuriphenylsulfonate titratable sulfhydryl groups per mol of protein. In contrast to mammalian cytochrome c1, the bacterial protein does not form a stable complex with cytochrome c2 or with mammalian cytochrome c at low ionic strength. Electron transfer between bacterial ferrocytochrome c1 and bacterial ferricytochrome c2, and between bacterial ferrocytochrome c1 and mammalian ferricytochrome c proceeds rapidly with equilibrium constants of 49 and 3.5, respectively. The midpoint potential of purified cytochrome c1 is calculated to be 228 mV, which is identical to that of mammalian cytochrome c1.

Abstract
Antibodies against cytochromes b and c1 of bovine heart mitochondria and the photosynthetic bacterium, Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides R-26, were raised in rabbits. The purified antibodies showed high titers against their respective antigens in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Less than 15% cross-reactivity between the mitochondrial and bacterial cytochromes was detected. Although antibodies against mitochondrial cytochrome b did not inhibit the mitochondrial cytochrome b-c1 complex, a 70% inhibition was obtained when these antibodies were incubated with delipidated mitochondrial cytochrome b-c1 complex prior to reconstitution with phospholipids indicating that the catalytic site(s) of mitochondrial cytochrome b are masked by phospholipids. On the other hand, antibodies against bacterial cytochrome b showed significant inhibition of the intact bacterial cytochrome b-c1 complex, indicating that some of the catalytic site epitopes of bacterial cytochrome b are exposed to the hydrophilic environment. Similar to antibodies against mitochondrial cytochrome b, antibodies against bacterial cytochrome b inhibited 50% activity of the mitochondrial cytochrome b-c1 complex only when they were incubated with the delipidated mitochondrial cytochrome b-c1 complex prior to reconstitution with phospholipids, indicating that the common epitopes between the cytochromes b are masked by phospholipids. Antibodies against mitochondrial and bacterial cytochromes c1 completely inhibited their respective cytochrome b-c1 complexes but no cross-immunoinhibition was observed. However, when antibodies against bacterial cytochrome c1 were incubated with the delipidated mitochondrial cytochrome b-c1 complex before reconstitution with phospholipids, a 65% inhibition was observed, indicating that the common epitopes between the cytochromes c1 were also somewhat masked by phospholipids. Antibodies against mitochondrial cytochrome c1 inhibited 70% of the succinate oxidase activity in the intact mitochondria preparation, but no inhibition was observed in submitochondrial particles, indicating that some mitochondrial cytochrome c1 epitopes are exposed to the cytoplasmic side.

Abstract
The purified cytochrome b-c1 complex of Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides has two b cytochromes distinguishable by optical, thermodynamic and electron paramagnetic resonance criteria (gz values are approximately equal to 3.75 and approximately equal to 3.4). EPR features typical of a Rieske iron sulfur cluster (g values of 2.03 1.90 and 1.81) and a c1 type cytochrome (g approximately equal to 3.4) were also observed. The b and c1 cytochromes were individually purified from the complex. The cytochrome c1 retained its native EPR spectrum. The b cytochrome lost over 90% of the intensity from the 'b566 type' heme site (g approximately equal to 3.75), while the 'b561 type' heme site (g approximately equal to 3.4) retained its native EPR spectrum.
