Abstract
Impairment of the immune response in MRONJ (medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws) is one of the still unclear etiopathogenic mechanisms of this condition encountered in cancer patients treated with bisphosphonates, with negative effects on the patient's quality of life. The aim of the present study was to correlate the immune response with etiopathogenic factors via immunohistochemical evaluation of the maxillary tissues in zoledronic acid osteonecrosis. The retrospective study included a group of 51 patients with various types of cancers, diagnosed with stage 2 or 3 MRONJ at zoledronic acid and treated surgically. Immunohistochemical expressions of αSMA, CD3, CD4, CD8, CD20, CD79α, CD68, CD204, and tryptase were evaluated. Immunohistochemical markers expressions were statistically analyzed according to the duration of the treatment, the trigger factor, the location of the MRONJ, and the healing status. Analysis of the immune response included T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, plasma cells, macrophages, and mast cells. The duration of treatment significantly influenced the immunohistochemical expression of most markers (p < 0.05). For an increasing trend in treatment duration, a decreasing trend in marker score was observed, suggesting an inverse correlation. The expression of the markers was different depending on the trigger factor, on MRONJ localization (maxilla/mandible), and the healing status, being more intense in patients cured per primam compared to those who had relapses. The patient's immune response was negatively influenced by the duration of the treatment, the trigger factor, the location of the lesion in the mandible, and the recurrence of MRONJ.

Abstract
The transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a common cerebrovascular ischemic disease whose symptoms resolve within a maximum of 24 hours. The study carried out by us is a retrospective descriptive one, in which we sought to highlight the main characteristics of TIA in patients admitted to the Emergency Hospital in Turnu-Severin municipality in Mehedinți county, in the period 2016-2020, including a group of 53 patients, mainly from Mehedinți county. The analysis of the study group and the risk factors showed that TIA mainly affects the elderly, over 50 years old, with the highest incidence being recorded in the 60-80-year age groups, with an extremely low incidence under 40 years. Significant differences were found between the sexes and between the social environments, with women and people from the urban environment being more prone to suffer a TIA. Among the most important modifiable risk factors encountered in TIA patients included in the study, the following were highlighted: HTN, obesity and atherosclerosis. Knowing the modifiable factors and combating them can improve the prognosis of AIT.

Abstract
Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a major complication of bisphosphonate treatment in cancer patients, and its etiology is not completely clarified. The study's goal is to find connections between the clinical and histopathological characteristics of osteonecrosis and bisphosphonates in a cohort of cancer patients who had osteonecrosis treated surgically. The retrospective study includes 51 patients of both sexes, aged 46 to 85 years, who underwent surgical treatment for MRONJ in two oral and maxillofacial surgery clinics (Craiova and Constanța). Demographic, clinical, and imaging data from the records of patients with osteonecrosis were analyzed. The surgical treatment removed the necrotic bone, and the harvested fragments were analyzed from a histopathological perspective. The histopathological examination data were evaluated and statistically processed to look for viable bone, granulation tissue, bacterial colonies, and inflammatory infiltrate. In the study groups, MRONJ was found particularly in the posterior regions of the mandible. Tooth extraction, but also periapical or periodontal infections, represented the trigger factors in most of the cases. The surgical therapy consisted of sequestrectomy or bone resection, and the histopathological examination of the fragments revealed osteonecrosis-specific features, such as the lack of bone cells, the development of an inflammatory infiltrate, and the existence of bacterial colonies. MRONJ in cancer patients receiving zoledronic acid is a severe complication that significantly lowers quality of life. Since these patients are not usually monitored by the dentist, they are identified in advanced stages of MRONJ. For these patients, thorough dental monitoring could reduce the incidence of osteonecrosis and its related complications.

Abstract
Cerebrovascular accidents (CVA)-strokes represent a major public health problem worldwide, due to the large number of people affected. Also, there is a large number of people who die from stroke, especially in developing countries. Our study included a group of 119 patients, diagnosed with stroke and admitted to the Emergency Hospital of Drobeta Turnul-Severin, Mehedinți county, between 2016-2020. The analysis of risk factors and associated comorbidities showed that stroke can affect both the elderly and young people, under 20 years old. However, approximately 4/5 of CVA patients (79.83%) were aged over 50 years old. If non-ischemic strokes predominated in patients under the age of 50, after this age there is a tendency to balance the incidence between the eight main forms of stroke. No significant differences were observed regarding the social environment of the patients, which shows that the risk factors are almost identical in both social environments. Among the modifiable risk factors, we highlighted: high blood pressure in 55.46% of cases, obesity in 19.33% of cases, atherosclerosis in 10.92% of cases, diabetes mellitus in 10.92%, kidney failure in 6.72% of cases. The data we obtained show that there are possibilities to reduce the incidence of stroke by controlling and reducing the modifiable risk factors.

Abstract
Coxarthrosis, or hip osteoarthritis (OA), is one of the main causes of hip pain, which can affect patients of all ages, being one of the most common reasons for patients presenting to the specialized outpatient clinic. The objective of our research was to determine the number of patients with coxarthrosis who presented to the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology within the Emergency County Hospital of Drobeta Turnu Severin, between 2017-2019, the sex, age, social environment of the patients. All patients underwent a thorough clinical examination to determine the risk factors, the favouring factors and their correlation with the paraclinical data obtained through imaging investigation (pelvis X-ray, computer tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance). The study included 462 patients, aged between 23 and 89 years old, who were diagnosed with varying degrees of coxarthrosis within the specialized outpatient clinic. The main risk factors were obesity, osteoporosis, chronic smoking, rural environment, female sex, the existence of a hip injury and intense physical exertion. The main purpose of the research was to analyse a series of data, which would bring information on the incidence, distribution by age groups, sex, living environment and professional activity of the population with coxarthrosis, in order to develop a therapeutic management as effective as possible.

Abstract
Gastric cancer continues to be a significant malignancy worldwide, accounting for approximately one million new cases in 2020. Scientists are focusing on the cancerous cells' plasma membrane (PM) as a potential therapeutic target in cancer because it functions as the cell's interface with its environment through a variety of mechanisms. The capacity of membrane shape and its structures to influence biological processes frequently occurs through the regulation of enzymes or preferential protein binding to membranes via membrane shape changes. We aimed here to assess the morphological irregularities of the cellular membranes in gastric adenocarcinoma tumors, and to find any putative differences from normal gastric mucosae epithelial cells. We analyzed the pattern of E-cadherin at the level of the cell membrane using the fractal dimension (FD) analysis on fluorescence immunohistochemistry samples labeled with E-cadherin in gastric well/moderate and solid gastric adenocarcinoma from patients without any associated chemotherapeutic treatment or radiotherapy. Images were binarized based on a fixed threshold of the E-cadherin fluorescence channel, and then the FD of the binarized image outlines has been calculated in order to assess the ruggedness of the cellular membranes. Overall assessment of the FD revealed that the subtle membrane variations were evident enough to deem a statistically significant difference and the complexity of the membrane roughness was clearly higher for adenocarcinoma cases. We intended to evaluate if separating adenocarcinoma cases as low grade (G1 and G2) and high grade (G3 and solid), FD analysis could still differentiate membrane patterns and check if the available clinical parameters like age, gender, tumor location, lymph ganglia involved might correlate with FD values for adenocarcinoma patients. Altogether, the morphological analysis of a simple marker for the cell membrane can identify and distinguish tumor cells. Although there was a limited correlation between this analysis and the main clinical and pathological indicators of the disease, it will be very useful in the future for automatic computer-assisted diagnosis on slides, as well as for evaluating cellular adhesion and inter-cellular trafficking in cancer cells.

Abstract
Ectopic endometrial epithelium associates a wide spectrum of symptomatology. Their evolution can be influenced by inflammatory and vascular changes, that affect not only the structure and cell proliferation rate, but also symptoms. This prospective study involved tissue samples from surgically treated patients, stained using classical histotechniques and immunohistochemistry. We assessed ectopic endometrial glands (CK7+, CK20-), adjacent blood vessels (CD34+), estrogen/progesterone hormone receptors (ER+, PR+), inflammatory cells (CD3+, CD20+, CD68+, Tryptase+), rate of inflammatory cells (Ki67+) and oncoproteins (BCL2+, PTEN+, p53+) involved in the development of endometriosis/adenomyosis. A CK7+/CK20- expression profile was present in the ectopic epithelium and differentiated it from digestive metastases. ER+/PR+ were present in all cases analyzed. We found an increased vascularity (CD34+) in the areas with abdominal endometriosis and CD3+-:T-lymphocytes, CD20+-:B-lymphocytes, CD68+:macrophages, and Tryptase+: mastocytes were abundant, especially in cases with adenomyosis as a marker of proinflammatory microenvironment. In addition, we found a significantly higher division index-(Ki67+) in the areas with adenomyosis, and inactivation of tumor suppressor genes-p53+ in areas with neoplastic changes. The inflammatory/vascular/hormonal mechanisms trigger endometriosis progression and neoplastic changes increasing local pain. Furthermore, they may represent future therapeutic targets. Simultaneous-multiple immunohistochemical labelling represents a valuable technique for rapidly detecting cellular features that facilitate comparative analysis of the studied predictors.

Abstract
Despite the numerous advances in tumor molecular biology and chemotherapy options, gastric adenocarcinoma is still the most frequent form of gastric cancer. One of the core proteins that regulates inter-cellular adhesion, E-cadherin plays important roles in tumorigenesis as well as in tumor progression; however, the exact expression changes and modulation that occur in gastric cancer are not yet fully understood. In an attempt to estimate if the synthesis/degradation balance matches the final membrane expression of this adhesion molecule in cancer tissue, we assessed the proportion of E-cadherin that is found in the Golgi vesicles as well as in the lysosomal pathway We utilized archived tissue fragments from 18 patients with well and poorly differentiated intestinal types of gastric cancer and 5 samples of normal gastric mucosa, by using high-magnification multispectral microscopy and high-resolution fluorescence deconvolution microscopy. Our data showed that E-cadherin is not only expressed in the membrane, but also in the cytoplasm of normal and tumor gastric epithelia. E-cadherin colocalization with the Golgian vesicles seemed to be increasing with less differentiated tumors, while co-localization with the lysosomal system decreased in tumor tissue; however, the membrane expression of the adhesion molecule clearly dropped from well to poorly differentiated tumors. Thus E-cadherin seems to be more abundantly synthetized than eliminated via lysosomes/exosomes in less differentiated tumors, suggesting that post-translational modifications, such as cleavage, conformational inactivation, or exocytosis, are responsible for the net drop of E-cadherin at the level of the membrane in more anaplastic tumors. This behavior is in perfect accordance with the concept of partial epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (P-EMT), when the E-cadherin expression of tumor cells is in fact not downregulated but redistributed away from the membrane in recycling vesicles. Moreover, our high-resolution deconvolution microscopy study showed for the first time, at the tissue level, the presence of Lysosome-associated membrane glycoprotein 1 (LAMP1)-positive exosomes/multivesicular bodies being trafficked across the membranes of tumor epithelial cells. Altogether, a myriad of putative modulatory pathways is available as a treatment turning point, even if we are to only consider the metabolism of membrane E-cadherin regulation. Future super-resolution microscopy studies are needed to clarify the extent of lysosome/exosome exchange between tumor cells and with the surrounding stroma, in histopathology samples or even in vivo.

Abstract
Background: Telocytes (TCs) are a peculiar morphological type of stromal cells. They project long and moniliform telopodes, visible on various bidimensional sections. Originally regarded as “interstitial Cajal-like cells”, gastrointestinal TCs were CD34+. Further double-labelling studies found that colon TCs are negative for the expressions of the PDGFR-α and α-SMA. However, the TCs in colon were not distinguished specifically from endothelial cells (ECs), vascular or lymphatic. A combinational approach is important for accurate TC identification. Hence, we designed an immunohistochemical study of human colon to check whether ECs and CD34+ TCs express different markers. Methods: Immunohistochemistry was performed on archived paraffin-embedded samples of human colon (nine cases) for the following markers: CD31, CD34, CD117/c-kit and D2-40 (podoplanin). Results: A distinctive population of CD34+ TCs was found coating the myenteric ganglia. However, also perivascular cells and vascular ECs were CD34+. c-kit expression was equally found in interstitial Cajal cells (ICCs) and perivascular cells. The CD34 TCs did not express c-kit. As they were equally CD31- and D2-40- they were assessed as different from ECs. Conclusions: Testing specific markers of ECs, vascular and lymphatic, in the same tissues in which CD34+ TCs are found, is much more relevant than to identify TCs by transmission electron microscopy alone.

Abstract
Arterial hypertension is the leading cause of death worldwide and is one of the most important public health problems. Arterial hypertension is a major cardiovascular risk factor with an increasing incidence. In this paper we set out to analyze a group of 3050 patients hospitalized between January 2013 and December 2017 in terms of drug therapy. We found that the majority of patients received drug treatment with a converting-enzyme inhibitor as a monotherapy, and the most common drug association was the association between conversion enzyme inhibitor and calcium channel blocker.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is considered a major global health concern due to an increasing number of new cases and cancer-related deaths each year, strong link to dietary habits prevalent in middle and high-income countries and limited therapeutic options especially in locally-advanced and metastatic settings. To counter this growing problem, the scientific community has strived to underpin the major molecular mechanisms behind the aggressive phenotype displayed by CRC and also develop new agents to selectively target and inhibit these core drivers. This evolution has allowed the separation of patients according to different risk groups in concordance with epidemiological parameters alongside novel biomarkers such as gene alterations, protein overexpression and aberrant signaling pathways. In this study we included 20 patients who underwent colonoscopy and were later received histopathologic confirmation of CRC. The statistical anamnestic data obtained from the patients (age, gender, home distribution, signs and symptoms) was corroborated with the results obtained from the histopathologic and immunohistochemical analysis of the samples obtained via colonoscopy. The average age was 63.8 years, the male: female ratio was 2.33 and the origin of 2/3 of the patients was urban and the most encountered symptoms were transit disorders (75%). In terms of colonoscopy results, the majority of tumors were found on the rectum (85%), 90% of tumors were adenocarcinomas, having a vegetant aspect in 60% of the cases and a moderate degree of differentiation in 50% of situations.

Abstract
During the past few years, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) became one of the most investigated and explored nanotechnology-derived nanostructures, given the fact that nanosilver-based materials proved to have interesting, challenging, and promising characteristics suitable for various biomedical applications. Among modern biomedical potential of AgNPs, tremendous interest is oriented toward the therapeutically enhanced personalized healthcare practice. AgNPs proved to have genuine features and impressive potential for the development of novel antimicrobial agents, drug-delivery formulations, detection and diagnosis platforms, biomaterial and medical device coatings, tissue restoration and regeneration materials, complex healthcare condition strategies, and performance-enhanced therapeutic alternatives. Given the impressive biomedical-related potential applications of AgNPs, impressive efforts were undertaken on understanding the intricate mechanisms of their biological interactions and possible toxic effects. Within this review, we focused on the latest data regarding the biomedical use of AgNP-based nanostructures, including aspects related to their potential toxicity, unique physiochemical properties, and biofunctional behaviors, discussing herein the intrinsic anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal activities of silver-based nanostructures.

Abstract
Nanotechnology has been successfully used for the fabrication of targeted anti-cancer drug carriers. This study aimed to obtain Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles functionalized with Gemcitabine to improve the cytotoxic effects of the chemotherapeutic substance on cancer cells. The (un) functionalized magnetite nanoparticles were synthesized using a modified co-precipitation method. The nanoconjugate characterization was performed by XRD, SEM, SAED and HRTEM; the functionalizing of magnetite with anti-tumor substances has been highlighted through TGA. The interaction with biologic media has been studied by means of stability and agglomeration tendency (using DLS and Zeta Potential); also, the release kinetics of the drug in culture media was evaluated. Cytotoxicity of free-Gemcitabine and the obtained nanoconjugate were evaluated on human BT 474 breast ductal carcinoma, HepG2 hepatocellular carcinoma and MG 63 osteosarcoma cells by MTS. In parallel, cellular morphology of these cells were examined through fluorescence microscopy and SEM. The localization of the nanoparticles related to the cells was studied using SEM, EDX and TEM. Hemolysis assay showed no damage of erythrocytes. Additionally, an in vivo biodistribution study was made for tracking where Fe₃O₄@Gemcitabine traveled in the body of mice. Our results showed that the transport of the drug improves the cytotoxic effects in comparison with the one produced by free Gemcitabine for the BT474 and HepG2 cells. The in vivo biodistribution test proved nanoparticle accumulation in the vital organs, with the exception of spleen, where black-brown deposits have been found. These results indicate that our Gemcitabine-functionalized nanoparticles are a promising targeted system for applications in cancer therapy.

Abstract
Telocytes (TCs) are morphologically defined as small-sized cells with long, thin, moniliform processes called telopodes (Tps). Numerous papers imply that TCs are a distinctive cell type, and that transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is the gold standard tool for their identification. We aimed to reproduce previous studies on myocardial TCs to check their validity. For this purpose we performed an immunohistochemical study on human cardiac samples from six autopsied donor cadavers, using antibodies against CD10, CD31, CD34, CD146, Ki67, alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), Platelet-Derived Growth Factor Receptor-alpha (PDGFRα) and laminin. Additionally we performed a TEM study on cardiac samples from three human autopsied donor cadavers and five adult Sprague-Dawley rats. We found endothelial cells (ECs), cords, and filopodia-projecting endothelial tip cells (ETCs) that expressed CD10, CD31, CD34, CD146, and PDGFR-α. Often, endothelial cells closely neighbored the sarcolemmal basal laminae. Endothelial progenitor cells, as well as nascent capillaries, were CD31+/CD34+. Proliferative endothelial cells expressed Ki67. In larger vessels we found pericytes that expressed CD146 and α-SMA; scarce α-SMA-expressing spindle-shaped cells lining cardiomyocytes were suggestive of a pericytic role in angiogenic sprout guidance. The TEM study showed that endothelial tubes are almost exclusively found in the narrow myocardial interstitia. ECs that built them up appeared identical to the cells that previous TEM studies have suggested to be myocardial telocytes. A subset of stromal cells with TC-like phenotype and telopodes-like processes actually seem to configure blood vessels, and therefore belong to the endothelial lineage. This study shows that data presented in previous studies on myocardial telocytes is not enough to allow the reproducibility of the results. At least a subset of cells considered to be TCs might belong to the endothelial lineage.

Abstract
The aim of our research activity was to obtain a biocompatible nanostructured composite based on naturally derived biopolymers (chitin and sodium alginate) loaded with commercial antibiotics (either Cefuroxime or Cefepime) with dual functions, namely promoting wound healing and assuring the local delivery of the loaded antibiotic. Compositional, structural, and morphological evaluations were performed by using the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analytical techniques. In order to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate the biocompatibility of the obtained composites, we performed the tetrazolium-salt (MTT) and agar diffusion in vitro assays on the L929 cell line. The evaluation of antimicrobial potential was evaluated by the viable cell count assay on strains belonging to two clinically relevant bacterial species (i.e., Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus).

Abstract
This work reports the non-surfactant templated synthesis and characterization of a new tyrosine-silica/antibiotics (TyR-SiO2/ATBs) nanocomposite, as well as both in vitro and in vivo cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activity against the microbial pathogen Staphylococcus aureus. The in vitro microbiological tests proved that the obtained nanobiostructure significantly enhance the antimicrobial activity of three commonly used antibiotics against S. aureus (i.e. erythromycin (ERI), gentamicin (GEN), and cloxacillin (CLO)) as revealed by the increased diameters of the growth inhibition zones and the decreased minimal inhibitory concentration values, as well as by the inhibitory effect of sub-lethal antibiotic concentrations on the ability of the respective pathogenic strains to adhere and colonize different substrata. These results, correlated with the lack of toxicity against mesenchymal stem cells along with an appropriate in vivo biodistribution highlight the promising therapeutic potential of this carrier that allows a decrease of the required active doses while significantly lessening the harmful side effects of the medication on the host organism.

Abstract
This review highlights and discusses the impact of nanotechnology on the inhibition of microbial colonization and biofilm development on modified surface prosthetic devices. In the first part of the paper the current status of infections related to prosthetic devices and the inquiries resulting from the increased number of patients with these infections are briefly reviewed. Next we discuss several aspects about the implication of nanotechnology in prosthetic devices surface modification and its impact on the prevention of infections. The main aspects regarding the biocompatibility and the application of these nanomodified prosthetic devices in tissue engineering are also highlighted.

Abstract
There have been few studies on human embryos describing a specific pattern of hindgut colonization by hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and interstitial Cajal cells (ICCs). We aimed to study CD34, CD45 and CD117/c-kit expression in late stage human embryos, to attain observational data that could be related to studies on the aorta-gonad-mesonephros (AGM)-derived HSCs, and data on hindgut ICCs. Antibodies were also applied to identify alpha-smooth muscle actin and neurofilaments. Six human embryos of 48-56 days were used. In the 48 day embryo, the hindgut was sporadically populated by c-kit+ ICCs, but, in all other embryos, a layer of myenteric ICCs had been established. Intraneural c-kit+ cells were found in pelvic nerves and vagal trunks, suggesting that the theory of Ramon y Cajal assuming that ICCs may be primitive neurons may not be so invalid. Also in the 48 day embryo, c-kit+/CD45+ perivascular cells were found along the pelvic neurovascular axes, suggesting that not only liver, but also other organs could be seeded with HSCs from the AGM region. CD45+ cells with dendritic morphologies were found in all hindgut layers, including the epithelium. This last evidence is suggestive of an AGM contribution to the tissue resident macrophages and could be related to processes of sprouting angiogenesis which, in turn, have been found to be guided by filopodia of endothelial tip cells. Further studies on human embryonic and fetal material should be performed to attempt to clarify whether the hindgut colonization with HSCs is a transitory or definitive process.

Abstract
This paper reports the synthesis and characterization of amoxicillin- functionalized magnetite nanostructures (Fe3O4@AMO), revealing and discussing several biomedical applications of these nanomaterials. Our results proved that 10 nm Fe3O4@AMO nanoparticles does not alter the normal cell cycle progression of cultured diploid cells, and an in vivo murine model confirms that the nanostructures disperse through the host body and tend to localize in particular sites and organs. The nanoparticles were found clustered especially in the lungs, kidneys and spleen, next to the blood vessels at this level, while being totally absent in the brain and liver, suggesting that they are circulated through the blood flow and have low toxicity. Fe3O4@AMO has the ability to be easily circulated through the body and optimizations may be done so these nanostructures cluster to a specific target region. Functionalized magnetite nanostructures proved a great antimicrobial effect, being active against both the Gram positive pathogen S. aureus and the Gram negative pathogen E. coli. The fabricated nanostructures significantly reduced the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the active drug. This result has a great practical relevance, since the functionalized nanostructures may be used for decreasing the therapeutic doses which usually manifest great severe side effects, when administrated in high doses. Fe3O4@AMO represents also a suitable approach for the development of new alternative strategies for improving the activity of therapeutic agents by targeted delivery and controlled release.

Abstract
During the healing process of third-degree skin burns, a very complex response involves different cells and tissues linked together by intra- and extra-cellular mechanisms. For the restoration of damaged tissues, angiogenesis is the key point in the formation of new blood vessels. By their emollient, astringent, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, biostimulator, epithelizing and cicatrizing effect, active principles from natural products contribute to the acceleration of the wound-healing process. In our study, we investigated the angiogenesis process in experimental model of third-degree skin burns treated with three topical preparations (cold-creams) containing 10% herbal extracts, comparing with 1% sulfadiazine cream and cold-cream base respectively. By their biostimulator, epithelizing and cicatrizing effect, cold-creams with herbal extracts are locally modulators of the cellular response and support the wound healing. The phytocomplex stimulates the favorable evolution of the burnt skin wounds and the development of neoangiogenesis capillaries.

Abstract
Oral cavity cancer is a public health problem as the sixth leading cause of cancer worldwide. Most tumor lesions are detected in stage III and IV, leading to a poor prognosis, five-year survival rate ranging between 10% and 40%. Oral cancer etiology is multifactorial, known still incomplete. The main etiopathogenic factors are exposure to cigarette smoke and alcohol consumption. We conducted a retrospective study of oral cavity tumors hospitalized in 2008-2012 in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic of the Emergency County Hospital of Craiova, Romania. Of 143 tumors of the oral cavity, 125 were malignant, and of these, 115 (92%) were represented by squamous cell carcinoma. Tumor lesions were more common in males (69%), patients from rural areas (64%) and those over 50-year-old (87.71%).

Abstract
Skin burns represent a major problem of public health because of their frequency and because of their seriousness, too. The healing process of the burnt wound is extremely complex, as it requires a well-coordinated collaboration among different tissues and cellular strings. From the morphological point of view, the stages of the repairing process of the skin wounds include processes of inflammation, proliferation and tissular remodeling. Angiogenesis has a role of extreme importance within the healing process of third-degree skin burns. That is because the vascularization remake is necessary for feeding the tissue of granulation with nutritive substances and oxygen. The angiogenesis started relatively fast. Three days after the producing of the burn, there could be identified strings of CD34+ endothelial precursor cells at the edges and deep into the wound, all these having contact with the normal blood vessels or with those lees affected by the thermal aggression. After the lumenization of the newly-formed capillary vessels, there appeared the pericytes within their membrane. The CD34+ endothelial precursor cells (EPc), as well as the pericytes, participate at the synthesis of the base membrane of the angiogenesis vessels. The density of the angiogenesis vessels on the surface unit within the tissue of granulation grew from three to 12 days. After that, they reduced progressively while the tissue of granulation was becoming mature. The angiogenesis vessels go through a process of reshuffling and maturation at the same time with the maturation of the tissue of granulation, but these processes did not appear to be finished when the skin was completely healed, and the epidermis was totally recovered.

Abstract
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation in high doses may have harmful effects on the eye. The sources of UV radiation are the sun, as well as some artificial sources such as UV lamps or voltaic arcs. Chronic exposure to UV can cause damage to the anterior pole of the eye, ranging from minor (pterygium) to serious photokeratitis. In our study, we applied a UV dose of 6.5 J/cm(2) in the wavelength range of 290-400 nm, for five consecutive days per rat anterior pole of the eye. Seven days after the last dose of radiation, the animals were sacrificed, harvesting both the irradiated and the non-irradiated eye. Histological and immunohistochemical examination of the lesions revealed that the greatest damage to the epithelium was recorded prior to and 2/3 of the remaining corneal stroma. The epithelial lesions we found varied from pseudokeratosis and detachment of the Bowman epithelium membrane to deep epithelial necrosis. Within the corneal stroma, we observed the formation of interstitial edema with disruption of the collagen structure. We also noticed the presence of an inflammatory infiltrate composed mainly of lymphocytes and CD68+ and CD163+ macrophages, as well as the occurrence of vascular devices. These consisted of angiogenesis capillaries with structured wall composed mainly of endothelial CD34+ precursor cells and a basal membrane rich in collagen IV fibers.

Abstract
Macrophages are some of the innate immune cells with a central role in inflammatory and immune responses. Studies in the last 20 years have shown that these cells have a particular influence in the reparative processes also. Our aim in this study was to evaluate the macrophage response in third-degree skin burns treated with allograft in an experimental model. Macrophages were specifically highlighted by immunohistochemical staining with anti-CD68 antibody. In the first evolutive part of the reparatory process, macrophages rapidly increased both numerically and as a relative area with about 300%, and then decreased progressively along with the granulation tissue maturation. Macrophage overall response curve was similar in animals treated with allograft and in the control group (untreated), which leads us to believe that the allograft does not induce a more ample immune response that could be regarded as pathological.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Adverse effects appearing during combined peg-Interferon and Ribavirin antiviral treatment against chronic infection with the hepatitis C virus are a major cause for treatment failures and abrupt interruption. In the prospect of the imminent introduction of new direct acting antiviral agents, with demonstrated higher rates of adverse effects, our study aimed to assess the severity and incidence of several types of adverse effects in a cohort of genotype 1 infected Romanian patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS We prospectively included a total of 150 patients (45 men), aged 25 to 64 years, who received combined peg-Interferon and Ribavirin antiviral treatment for chronic hepatitis C. Out of these, 145 patients also had liver biopsies prior to treatment initiation. We recorded their viral loads, hemoglobin values and thrombocyte counts, as well as any dermatological, psychiatric or constitutional adverse effect after twelve doses, eight and twelve months of treatment, with two follow-up examinations at three and six months after treatment completion. RESULTS Viral loads significantly decreased after 12 doses of treatment, in the end a total of six patients (two men and four women) being declared non-responders. Hemoglobin values and thrombocyte counts significantly decreased during treatment (p<0.0001), with their values being restored to pre-treatment levels during the follow-up period. We did not find significant differences between the 12-doses, 8 and 12 months values during treatment (p>0.05). We recorded 43 cases (11 men and 32 women) presenting with rashes, drug eruptions and erythema. We only encountered grade 1 and 2 dermatological adverse effects. Psychiatric effects were present in 34 cases (10 men and 24 women, 22.6% of the group) and manifested as mild depressions, which did not require specific medication or antiviral dose adjustment. Patients also presented headaches (80.6%), fatigue (71.3%), nausea (47.3%), arthralgias (35.3%) and fever (30%). CONCLUSIONS We did not encounter severe hematological adverse effects that would require Ribavirin dosage adjustments. Cutaneous and psychiatric adverse effects were also present in a significant number of patients; however, their severity did not influence the continuity or outcome of the antiviral treatment. Other constitutional effects were also present with no direct consequence on the course of treatment. Future agents employed in antiviral therapy shall require extensive monitoring of all adverse effects already acknowledged during dual combination therapy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In the present study, we aimed to assess MMP-9 and type IV collagen in the gingival tissue in patients with gingival overgrowth (GO) after orthodontic treatment, with or without clinical signs of inflammation to appreciate the role of balance between those two markers in the onset of GO during tooth movement. MATERIALS Gingival tissue was harvested from 45 patients divided in three groups: 15 patients with orthodontic appliance that developed GO on at least two teeth; 15 patients with chronic gingivitis with GO; 15 patients (control group) with healthy periodontal tissues, without clinical gingival changes, in whom the first premolar was planned for extraction for orthodontic purposes (canine distalization). METHODS The tissue samples obtained by gingivectomy were fixed in 10% neutral formalin solution for 48 hours and then included in paraffin with the usual technique. The histologic examination was performed using classic Hematoxylin-Eosin technique. Double immunofluorescence was performed for anti-MMP-9 and anti-collagen IV antibodies. RESULTS MMP-9/collagen IV double stainings showed an increase of fibrosis and inflammation in different degrees. CONCLUSIONS The mechanical stress induced by the orthodontic devices, might be the key players in driving both the inflammation and the fibrotic reaction.

Abstract
As heart development is an incomplete described area, and likewise an important source of intra- and post-partum morbidity and mortality, we have aimed at analyzing both vascular and cytoskeletal factors during early heart development in humans. The distribution of CD105, CD31, α-SMA, vimentin and desmin have been studied on a series of normal human heart tissues varying between five and 33 weeks of gestational age, utilizing both enzymatic single immunohistochemistry, as well as double immunofluorescence. We showed here that CD105 is already expressed at five weeks of gestational age in the future endocardium, and that between 9 and 10 weeks it shows clear-cut formed vessels. CD31 was also present diffusely at five weeks in the myocardium, while beginning with seven weeks, endocardium and vessels were clearly positive. Contrary to what it might be expected for striated muscle cells, cardiomyocytes were α-SMA positive between 9 and 20 weeks, a time window during which the marker showed clear-cut sarcomer formation. Desmin was first detected at nine weeks lining the cardiomyocyte plasma membrane, and after 17 weeks it showed the adult-like striated pattern of the protein. As expected, vimentin was already present in the mesenchymal cells from the first investigated time point, retaining a perivascular localization only towards higher ages. This is the first study that describes these vascular, muscular and mesenchymal factors on a large series of sequential human tissues, in an attempt to shed more light on the development of heart.

UNLABELLED The avascular necrosis of the femoral head is an illness induced by the cutoff of blood flow to the femoral head and it affects mostly young adults between the ages of 30 and 50 years, raising therapeutic and diagnostic issues. Many risk factors are incriminated in the development of avascular necrosis of the femoral head like: trauma, chronic alcohol consumption, smoking, administration of corticosteroid drugs, most of the cases are considered to be idiopathic. The main goal of our paper is to describe the macroscopic and microscopic variations of the bone structure, which occur in patients with avascular necrosis of the femoral head. MATERIALS AND METHODS The biological material needed for our study was obtained following hip arthroplasty surgery in 26 patients between the ages of 29 and 59 years, which previously were diagnosed with avascular necrosis of the femoral head and admitted in the Orthopedics Department of the Emergency County Hospital of Craiova (Romania) between 2010 and 2011. From a macroscopic point of view, we found well defined areas of necrosis, most of which were neatly demarcated of the adjacent viable tissue by hyperemic areas, loss of shape and contour of the femoral head and transformations of the articular cartilage above the area of necrosis. When examined under the microscope, we found vast areas of fibrosis, narrow bone trabeculae, obstructed blood vessels or blood vessels with clots inside, hypertrophic fat cells, bone sequestration but also small cells and pyknotic nuclei. The microscopic and macroscopic findings on the femoral head sections varied with the patients and the stage of the disease.

Abstract
Dilated cardiomyopathy is a major cause of heart failure and a major cause of morbidity and mortality. It is a multifactorial disease that includes both hereditary and acquired forms. It is estimated that around 20-35% of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy have hereditary forms. It is the third most common cause of heart failure and the most common cause of heart transplant. Dilated cardiomyopathy can be a secondary condition of many diseases such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, pheochromocytoma, infections, malnutrition, ingestion of toxic substances (alcohol, cocaine), ingestion of chemotherapeutic drugs, autoimmune diseases. In our study, we aimed to describe the changes of myocardial cells and interstitial connective tissue in patients clinically diagnosed with alcoholic dilated cardiomyopathy. The material studied consisted of heart fragments sampled from the left ventricle (LV) during necropsy from a total of 28 patients, aged between 58 and 73 years, with a clinical and laboratory diagnosis of dilated cardiomyopathy, hospitalized in the Cardiology Center of the Emergency County Hospital of Craiova in 2009 and 2010. In dilated cardiomyopathy, myocardial muscle fibers appeared slightly elongated or wavy, with hypochromatic, heterogeneous, vacuolar sarcoplasm, by a decrease of myofibril numbers. Lipofuscin granules were frequently seen in the sarcoplasm. Nuclear changes were consistent with sarcoplasmic alterations. Changes of the interstitial connective tissue were sometimes extensive and sometimes barely noticeable. The most common alteration of this structure was the onset and development of a mainly perivascular collagen fibrillogenetic process.

Abstract
Chronic gastritis has a high incidence in adults, causing progressive destruction of glandular structures, favoring the development of gastric atrophy. The association of chronic gastritis with intestinal type metaplasia of gastric mucosa has a poor outcome as intestinal metaplasia is regarded as a precancerous lesion. Metaplasia is common in patients with Helicobacter pylori infection and also heavy smokers. The aim of our study was to evaluate the relationship between chronic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia. The study was conducted on a total of 1218 patients, aged between 5 and 90 years, who presented for dyspeptic disorders in the period 2007-2010 and were examined clinically and endoscopically. During the gastroscopic examination, fragments of gastric mucosa were collected for the histopathological study and for highlighting the H. pylori infection. For the histopathological study, the Hematoxylin-Eosin and PAS-Alcian Blue stains were performed, while for the immunohistochemical study the anti-TAG72 and anti-PCNA antibodies were used. A diagnosis of gastritis was established in 615 patients, representing approximately 50.5% of all cases. Most cases with gastritis were found in people of middle age. Gastritis was present in almost all age groups, from teenagers to the elders. Of the 615 cases of gastritis, urease test was positive in 353 patients, representing approximately 57.40% of all patients with gastritis. Histopathological examination identified the presence of intestinal metaplasia in 61.60% of patients with chronic gastritis, mostly complete metaplasia. PCNA immunohistochemistry revealed that cell proliferation processes are intensified in intestinal metaplasia. This study highlights the importance of chronic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, and H. pylori infection in the etiopathogeny of gastric cancer.

Abstract
Skin burns are a rather high incidence lesions which, depending on their depth and extension, can severely affect not only the skin but the entire organism. Third-degree skin burns extended on over 20% of the body surface often require skin graft. Skin allograft is a therapeutic alternative when autograft cannot be used. We investigated the allograft influence on the angiogenesis process in third-degree skin burns, using an experimental model. We noticed that the allograft induces a stronger inflammatory reaction associated with intense angiogenesis process by about 10-15% compared to control group.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) currently represents the fifth most common cancer worldwide, while being the third leading cause of cancer death. Fractal analysis is a novel tool used in quantitative and qualitative image assessment. Vascular patterns and cellular nuclei particularities in tumoral pathology make ideal candidates for this technique. Our aim was to apply fractal analysis in quantifying nuclear chromatin patterns and vascular axels in order to identify differences between images of primary HCC, liver metastasis (LM) and surrounding normal liver tissue. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections from 40 cases of HCC and 40 LM of various origins were used. We performed Hematoxylin staining for nuclear chromatin as well as immunohistochemical staining for vascular patterns. High-resolution images were captured; nuclear and vascular morphologies were assessed on binarized skeleton masks using the fractal box counting method. Analysis was performed using the free, public domain Java-based image processing tool, ImageJ, which provided the fractal dimensions (FDs) for each studied element. Statistical analysis was performed using the ANOVA test with Bonferroni post-tests and t-tests for paired samples. Fractal analysis of vascular patterns clearly differentiated between tumoral tissue and normal surrounding tissue (p<0.01). Further analysis of nuclear FDs improved the specificity of these results, providing clear differentiation between pathological and normal tissue (p<0.01). When comparing primary HCC images with metastatic formations, we encountered statistically significant differences in nuclear chromatin assessment. However, blood vessels had a higher FD in primary tumors when compared with liver metastasis (p<0.05) and also allowed for a differentiation between primary liver tumors with and without neurodifferentiation. Fractal analysis represents a potent tool for discriminating between tumoral and non-tumoral tissue images. It provides accurate, quantifiable data, which can be easily correlated with the pathology at hand. Primary and metastatic liver tissue can be differentiated to some extent, however further studies, possibly including other variables (cellular matrix for instance) are needed in order to validate the method.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We report a case of a 78-year-old woman with a large cerebral infarction probably due to athermanous embolism following atrial fibrillation. CASE DESCRIPTION The patient, known with atrial fibrillation, high blood pressure and heart failure, complained of headache and motor impairment on the left side of the body. CT imaging revealed a subacute ischemic lesion in the right fronto-occipital lobes, and an old ischemic lesion in the right fronto-parietal lobes. Anticoagulant treatment was conducted with careful monitoring of the coagulability status. After almost three weeks, suddenly the patient became comatose and died shortly after. Macroscopic and microscopic examination confirmed the cortico-subcortical ischemic lesions, but also identified a fresh hemorrhagic site in pons, distant from the initial lesion sites. An immunohistochemical study identified blood vessels in the ischemic sites completely isolated from any glial support. CONCLUSIONS This is a rare case of a large cerebral infarction with a pontine hemorrhagic event.

Abstract
Reduced cerebral blood flow beyond the compensatory mechanisms leads to cerebral hypoxia. Hypoxia causes various lesions of neurons, glial cells and cerebral blood vessels, depending on its duration and intensity. In our study, we reduced cerebral blood flow in the experience animal on average by 30%, by right internal carotid artery ligation. Fifteen days after the onset of hypoxia, by histology and immunohistochemical studies, we identified neuronal, glial and vascular damage. Lesions of nerve and glial cells ranged from changes of cytoplasmic tinting with the development of "red neurons", to neuronal and glial cytolysis with areas of focal necrosis. Vascular lesions were represented by the collapse, fragmentation and discontinuity of capillaries, always associated with a marked perivascular edema.

Abstract
Pericytes and myofibroblasts are two types of connective cells that appear in large quantities in reparative processes. In order to evaluate their response and any relationships between them, we have inflicted third degree skin burns to seven groups of five common Wistar rats each from which we sampled granulation tissue at three days interval for histological and immunohistochemical studies. Alpha-SMA and CD34 antibodies revealed that granulation tissue myofibroblasts do not express CD34 and do not arise from pericytes. The parallel arrangement of myofibroblasts in relation to the burned wound surface suggests that their main function is mechanical traction on granulation tissue and wound edges.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pterygium represents a triangular conjunctivo-epithelial overgrowth, proliferating from the bulbar conjunctiva and covering the cornea, causing severe vision loss. It is an abnormal growth and differentiation of the conjunctive epithelial structures of the corneal limbus. Chronic exposures to solar ultraviolet radiation, heat and dust, as well as viral agents, are the most common pathogenic entities involved in its evolution. Recent studies linked pterygium with neoplastic proliferation, as ocular limbic stem cells and p53-protein expression are altered. MATERIALS AND METHODS Our study was conducted on 84 fragments of pterygium, collected after surgery from patients admitted between 2008 and 2009 in the Departments of Ophthalmology of the Emergency County Hospital of Craiova and Hospital of Rovinari. Histological studies were performed by staining with Hematoxylin-Eosin, light green trichromic (Goldner-Szekely technique) and PAS-Hematoxylin. Immunohistochemistry highlighted the T-lymphocytes by using the CD3 antibody, B-lymphocytes by using the CD20 antibody and cells of the macrophage system using the CD68 antibody. The slides were analyzed under a 55I Nikon microscope, resulting pictures being captured with a 5 MP digital camera and digitally retrieved and enhanced using the dedicated NIS-Elements software. RESULTS Histology showed the presence of a conjunctivo-epithelial structure, significantly different from the structure from which it developed. In 20% of the cases, the covering epithelium was similar to that of the bulbar conjunctival mucosa. In some cases, when pathogens were more active in the environment, the appearance of the covering epithelium of the membrane appeared pleomorphic, with dysplastic aspects, suggesting significant alteration of cell proliferation and differentiation. In approximately 75% of patients, we identified goblet cells in the surface epithelium. They appeared either isolated or associated in variable numbers, structures resembling intraepithelial glands. These particular cells synthesize and accumulate PAS-positive mucines rich in glycosaminoglycans, and are usually found in conjunctival epithelium. We observed a number of invaginations in the connective tissue underlying the epithelium, mostly formed by goblet cells, this giving the aspect of mucous glands, similar to the "glands of Henle". A highly developed vascular neoformation network, consisting of arterioles, venules and a very large number of capillaries can also be found in the connective tissue. Immunohistochemistry suggested that B-lymphocytes marginally take part in the immune response in pterygium. T-lymphocytes formed the majority of the mass of immune system cell present in connective tissue of the pterygium. Macrophage-type cells were distributed unevenly in the pterygium tissue, as the intensity of the inflammatory process varies depending on antigen levels. CONCLUSIONS Pterygium shows significant changes both in the epithelium and in the underlying connective tissue. Immune cell infiltrate was diffuse, more abundant in areas with erosion of the covering epithelium.

Abstract
In the past 30 years, after the discovery of vascular proliferation factors, angiogenesis is one of the most intensively studied fields. Restoring the vascular network after burn injury is essential for healing, as it brings oxygen and nutrients to injured tissues, improves the contribution of inflammatory cells and prepares the damaged area for repair and tissue regeneration. To study the process of angiogenesis we used seven groups of five animals, each of adult Wistar rats, which were inflicted with third degree skin burns. From each group of animals, we sampled at successive intervals of three days the entire burnt wound with a ring of surrounding normal skin. Sampled skin fragments were processed for paraffin inclusion, sectioned with a microtome and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin or Masson trichrome. The samples were also analyzed using single chromogenic immunohistochemistry or double immunofluorescence for the presence of CD34 and alpha smooth muscle actin (α-SMA). Angiogenesis process started at about three days after the burn infliction, with the appearance of tubular structures lined by CD34-positive cells. Subsequently, these cells showed intense proliferative activity that generated a network that included progressive neovascularization around the wound surface. Maximum vascular proliferation occurred at 9-15 days after injury, when the number of capillaries reached 229/mm², and the total area of capillary angiogenesis at 100.27 μm² (about 10% of the section area). Subsequently, the process of angiogenesis was gradually reduced, but remained at moderate levels after wound healing. During the process of angiogenesis, there was a very close relationship between CD34-positive cells and pericytes (as α-SMA-positive).

Abstract
Stroke is an important public health issue because it has high morbidity and mortality rates. In addition, it has one of the highest rates of disability in adults. Recent data show that macrophage system cells, especially microglial cells, are involved both in neuroprotective processes and in the neurotoxicity, depending on the type and extent of the brain damage. In our study, using histology and immunohistochemistry techniques, we evaluated the macrophage-type cell reaction in cerebral hemorrhage. We found that the number of CD68-positive cells increased 7-8 folds per square millimeter of cortical surface in the cerebral parenchyma adjacent to the hemorrhage. We identified a large number of perivascular-activated macrophages, in areas distant to the hemorrhage, showing that individuals with hemorrhagic stroke have profound and extensive alterations of the blood-brain barrier.

Abstract
Metaplasia represents the process of transforming a well-differentiated adult tissue into another type of adult tissue. Pancreatic metaplasia of the gastric mucosa represents the process in which the normal mucosa of the stomach is replaced with pancreatic formations, which mimic the structure of pancreatic acini. We describe the case of a male patient aged 39 who was admitted for abdominal pain, vomiting, hematemesis, melena, pale teguments, intense perspiration and nausea. The patient underwent surgery for suturing a perforated duodenal ulcer five years prior to this episode (2002). A gastric ulcer complicated with superior digestive bleeding and a chronic duodenal ulcer complicated with partial stenosis and perivisceritis were found during surgery. Gastric wall fragments were harvested and underwent usual histological techniques and immunohistochemistry. We found an ulceration from the gastric mucosa to the submucosa, covered by fibrino-leukocytic detritus. In the mucosal chorion we found numerous round or oval shaped nested formations which occupied the lower two thirds of the chorion, to the muscularis mucosae. Some metaplasic acini contain cells variable in shape, color and immunophenotype. Surrounding the nested acini we found tubular formations, formed of cubic shaped cells, representing excretory canals which were continued by gastric glands or opened directly in the crypts of the gastric epithelium.

Abstract
Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the first cause of disability with an increasing incidence, especially of the ischemic type. There is no effective curative treatment for stroke and therefore the therapy for this disease currently relies on identifying patients at risk and instituting preventive measures. Since ischemic stroke in middle cerebral artery territory (and with preferential localization in the striated nuclei) is the main type of stroke in humans, animal models obtained by surgical ligation of the middle cerebral artery (MCAO) are valuable tools for the fundamental study of this disease. In this study, we investigated the morphological and immunohistochemical remodeling of the tissue after stroke and in particular the vascular component in a MCAO murine model. The analysis included the sequential sacrificing of animals at 1, 14, 28 and 60 days post-stroke and brain processing for paraffin embedding and sectioning. Our results show a gradual revascularization of the lesion as we move away from the time of the surgical intervention. This effect is accompanied by the development of an increasingly dense glial scar at the periphery of the lesion. The perilesional area itself, the penumbra, is characterized by minimal histological changes (such as eosinophilic neurons), but also by an increased expression of activated caspase 3 as a sign of apoptotic neurons and glial cells. Our study confirms the potential of the organism in its attempt to revascularize the injured area, and raises questions on the role of the glial scar in limiting the process of neovascularization.

Abstract
The prognostic value of tumor-associated angiogenesis is still a subject of debate. As microvascular density and the expression of different growth factors were not demonstrated to be good predictors of the response to antiangiogenic and antivascular therapy, there is a strong need to search for more sensitive markers. In the present study we evaluated by double immunohistochemical staining the profile of tumor-associated blood vessels and the rate of endothelial cell proliferation in patients with thymoma (n=38). Results were compared with specimens of normal thymus and from patients with myasthenia gravis. We found a significant increase in the number of immature and intermediate blood vessels in the tumor area of thymoma, regardless the histological type of the tumor. Proliferating endothelial cells were found in 15 cases, and co-expression of Ki67 and CD34 had the highest value in immature vessels. Both blood vessel type and endothelial cell proliferation significantly correlated with invasive thymoma. Based on these findings, it can be assumed that the type of tumor-associated vessel together with endothelial cell proliferation are useful predictors of invasion, immature and intermediate vessels can be targeted with antivascular drugs and endothelial cell proliferation could be used as a good predictor of the response to antiangiogenic therapy.

In the present paper, we analyzed the immunohistochemical expression of D2-40 in the normal human thymus and thymoma. In both fetal and postnatal normal thymus, we found a strong expression of D2-40 in the subcapsular and cortico-medullary epithelial cells, and lack of expression in the thymus of involution. These findings support a role for podoplanin in the proliferation of some subtypes of epithelial cells of the normal thymus stroma. In thymoma, the expression of D2-40 was detected in neoplastic cells in 18 from 26 cases (69.23%). No correlation was found between D2-40 expression and histological types of thymoma, but strong correlation was noticed with tumor stage. Based on these results, it is suggested that D2-40 expression is a good predictor of invasion and can be considered as a potential target for therapy in selected cases.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Levels of metalloproteinase 8 (MMP8) in gingival crevicular fluid were studied in case of treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances. It were found a relationship between its levels and stages of the treatment under a good control of the bacterial plaque. Gingival overgrowth (GO) during the orthodontic treatment was traditionally considered as an inflammatory reaction consecutive of bacterial plaque accumulation because of difficult hygiene in those patients. Our study starts from the hypothesis that the gingival volume growth during the fixed orthodontic treatment appears at the beginning, without any inflammatory signs, as a result of the mechanical stress and periodontal remodeling during the orthodontic dental movement, the MMP8 acting as an indicator of this situation. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-two patients received a fixed orthodontic treatment. Periodontal examination took place one hour before and one hour, four and eight hours and weekly after until eight weeks. At each session gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) was sampled and the level of MMP8 was determined. At the appearance of gingival overgrowth (GO) gingivectomy was performed. RESULTS In the 13 patients that did not develop gingival overgrowth, the levels of MMP8 increased in the first 4-8 hours after orthodontic appliance and then fall to the initial level. In the nine patients with gingival overgrowth, the MMP8 levels in GCF continued to rise until the appearance of GO. In cases of GO with inflammation the levels of MMP8 were significantly higher than in cases of GO without inflammation. The expression of MMP8 in hypertrophied gingiva was more intensive in cases of GO with inflammation. CONCLUSIONS It is possible that the MMP8 values in GCF to be a marker of the GO onset. MMP8 determination and monitoring at shorter time intervals may lead to a better control of the bacterial plaque and avoidance of gingival inflammation.

Abstract
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequent cutaneous tumour. Having as aim the identification of the clinical-evolutional and histopathologic aspects of the basal cell carcinomas, we have undertaken a retrospective study for a period of 5 years, from 1st January 2004 to 31st December 2008, on 706 patients interned in the Dermatology Clinic of Craiova, whom indicated 738 tumours. A clinical data was drawn for the patients, containing the identification data, environment, profession, cancer localisation and history of the disease, clinical and histopathologic diagnosis. Results. In our lot, the most numerous cases were of pearly BCC (33.6%), nodular BCC (22.2%), respectively scar plane BCC (13.1%).Regarding the histopathologic type, the repartition was as it follows: solid BCC (33.7%), polymorph (19.2%), adenoid (13.1%), keratinised (11.8%), superficial (7.0%), cystic (3.8%), pigmented (3.8%), scleroderma form (2.2%), in situ (1.4%).

Abstract
The inflammatory answer of the dental pulp in front of an antigen presents a series of particularities caused by its special anatomical conditions. The evaluation of the inflammatory answer in the evaluation tests of the biocompatibility of the dental materials is made by histological methods without defining precise quantitative criteria to measure the pulp reaction. In this study, we followed the reaction of the pulp tissue to five antibodies (CD20, CD45Ro, CD4, CD8, and CD68) in order to evaluate the inflammatory aspects of the dental pulp. We did not find positive answers for the CD20 protein, specific for B-lymphocytes, for the fragments of normal pulp tissue taken into study. Even if they are in small number among the pulp cells, the T-lymphocytes that express the protein CD45Ro may be also found in the normal dental pulp. Of the two subsets of T-lymphocytes, we found positive answers on the studied preparations only for the CD8 protein. For the CD68 protein, strongly expressed by the macrophages, we obtained positive results both for the inflammated pulp tissue, and for the normal dental pulp, yet in a very small amount. The use of immunohistochemical techniques, with well-defined markers of the pulp inflammation, can offer better results for a highly accurate evaluation of the inflammatory answer of the dental pulp.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Old age is associated with an enhanced susceptibility to stroke and poor recovery from brain injury. Therefore, find therapeutic strategies aimed at improving functional recovery after brain ischemia in aged subjects is of considerable clinical interest. While environmental enrichment has been shown to improve the behavioral outcome of stroke in young animals, the effect of an enriched environment, hypothermia and Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor (G-CSF) on behavioral and neuropathological recovery in aged animals is not known. Focal cerebral ischemia was produced by occlusion of the right middle cerebral artery in 3-month- and 20-month-old male Sprague-Dawley rats. The functional outcome was assessed in neurobehavioral tests conducted over a period of 14-28 days following surgery. Brain tissue then was immunostained for proliferating astrocytes and the infarct and scar tissue volumes were measured. Aged rats showed more severe behavioral impairments and diminished functional recovery compared to young rats. Most infarcted animals had disturbances of sensorimotor function, with recovery beginning later, progressing more slowly, and reaching a lower functional endpoint in aged animals. However, the enriched environment significantly improved the rate and extent of recovery in aged animals. Correlation analysis revealed that the beneficial effect of the enriched environment on recovery, both in young and aged rats, correlated highly with a reduction in infarct size, in the number of proliferating astrocytes, and in the volume of the glial scar. These results suggest that temporally modulating astrocytic proliferation and the ensuing scar formation might be a fruitful approach to improving functional recovery after stroke in aged rats. In aged humans, stroke is a major cause of disability for which no neuroprotective measures are available. A viable alternative to conventional drug-based neuroprotective therapies is brain/body cooling, or hypothermia. In animal studies of focal ischemia, short-term hypothermia consistently reduces infarct size. Nevertheless, efficient neuroprotection requires long-term, regulated lowering of whole body temperature. In this study, we show that two days post-stroke exposure of aged rats to a mixture of air and a mild inhibitor of oxidative phosphorylation, H2S, causes deep hypothermia (27.8+/-0.3 degrees C) and a 50% reduction in infarct size without obvious neurological deficits or physiological side effects. G-CSF treatment after stroke exerted a robust and sustained beneficial effect on survival rate and running function. Transient improvement after G-CSF treatment could be observed for coordinative motor function on the inclined plane test and for working memory in the radial maze test. At cellular level, G-CSF treatment increased the number of proliferating cells in the SVZ and the dentate gyrus and increased the number of newborn neurons in the SVZ, ipsilateral to the lesion. These results suggests that the G-CSF treatment in aged rats has a survival enhancing capacity and a beneficial effect on functional outcome most likely via supportive cellular processes such as neurogenesis. CONCLUSIONS These findings are important for the further clinical development of the drug in elderly stroke patients. Future studies should focus on an optimization of treatment schedule to achieve a maximum of post-stroke recovery enhancement in aged subjects.

Abstract
Osteoporosis has become in recent years a public health problem considered a true "silent epidemic", by increasing the number of osteoporosis fractures in the world as a result of increased number of persons 3rd group of age by increasing life expectancy and reducing physical effort and the emergence of sedentary occupations, increasing incidence of obesity, diabetes, liver disease and kidney by applying widely corticosteroid therapy. Starting from the macroscopic and microscopic aspects of the bone spongy tissue affected by osteoporosis, from vertebral bodies, we try to explain the modality of damaging the bone micro-structure by buckling phenomenon, knowing that the bone tissue has at trabecular level, an elasticity degree and supports high levels of mechanical forces.

Abstract
We study here the histopathological changes in twenty-two cases of acute ischemic stroke. The average age of the patients was 62-year-old, and the interval from the onset of the disease to the death varied from 6 hours to 15 years. The brain lesions after acute stroke were observed in all regions. Their evolution allowed us to classify them in fourth stages. Phase one changes (1-2 days after onset) (n=2 patients) included red hypoxic and "ghost" neurons and other acute neuronal injury and spongiosis. The second phase (n=14 patients) was subdivided into: (a) a phase of acute inflammation (3-37 days after onset) (n=5 patients), where we observed especially features of acute inflammation together with coagulative necrosis, and (b) phase of chronic inflammation (10 days-53 years after the onset) (n=9 patients), in which prevail mononuclear and macrophage infiltrate, astrogliosis, spongiosis and neo-vascularization. In the third phase (26 days-23 years after the onset), we included six cases characterized by the absence of an inflammatory reaction, presence of cavitation, astrogliosis and macrophages. Our study describes the heterogeneity of brain injury after acute ischemic stroke with the participation of all brain components, and the chronology in which these lesions develop and evolve.

Abstract
The varied morphological forms in which astrocytes occur in brain of ischemic/hemorrhagic stroke and Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients are complex and the mechanisms that drive their formation are not yet properly understood. Subjective differences can be described between these pathologies in what it concerns astrocyte implication, but these have not been yet subjected to a morphometrical quantification. Here we apply a fractal dimension (FD) analysis algorithm to differentiate both between fibrous, protoplasmatic and activated astroglia; but also between the three pathological conditions studied. Analyzing more than 1000 astroglia, we show here first that FD can clearly differentiate between the three morphological subtypes. Second, we describe resemblances of the FD values for ischemic and hemorrhagic lesions, and significant differences when these are compared to AD patients. These results are further discussed and integrated in what it regards the preferential regions proved to be affected in these conditions, and which parallels our results. This work illustrates that fractal dimension analysis of astroglia is a useful method for quantitatively describing gliosis in different pathologies, and that it may offer more insight into the pathogenesis of brain diseases.

Abstract
Oral cancer is an important cause of worldwide morbidity and mortality, with substantial economic, physiological, and psychosocial impacts due to its treatment modality and a great risk for recurrences and second primary oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC) development. Therefore, it is very important to understand the underlying cell biology of such tumors. It is now a well-accepted fact that angiogenesis is essential for the growth and metastasis of solid tumors, including head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. The main factor responsible for angiogenesis is VEGF and its receptors. It has been demonstrated that VEGFRs are also present on tumor cells themselves and other cells from the tumor microenvironment, in addition to tumoral endothelial cells (ECs). Therefore between these cells take place numerous and different interactions mediated via paracrine/autocrine pathways that promote angiogenesis, uncontrolled tumor proliferation and metastasation. In consequence, estimation of VEGF expression and its receptors became a reliable prognostic tool in OSCCS, predicting the poor disease-free survival, poor overall survival, and metastatic disease. Understanding the distribution and role of VEGF and its receptors in the progression of OSCC will be essential to the development and design of new therapeutic strategies.
