Do children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes suffer from a lack of resources in France? Results from a benchmark study in the New Aquitaine region

BACKGROUND

A benchmark study was conducted in the southwest of France, in the New Aquitaine region, to investigate metabolic outcomes and availability of resources in pediatric diabetes units. We assessed whether the level of care was in accordance with the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes recommendations.

METHODS

Demographic and clinical data were collected, as were all HbA1c tests for the 2017 calendar year. Pediatricians specialized in diabetes care were invited to complete an online survey concerning means allocated to the management of type 1 diabetes in their centers.

RESULTS

Sixteen centers provided data for 1277 patients and 3873 clinical visits. A total of 1115 children suffering from diabetes for more than 1 year were studied. Median HbA1c was 8% (7.4-8.6) for the whole region. Only 29.2% of children had good metabolic control in accordance with the <7.5% target. We identified slight but significant variation in glycemic control among centers (P=0.029). The use of an insulin pump varied greatly among centers but did not explain HbA1c differences. We did not identify a correlation between medical or paramedical time dedicated to the follow-up of diabetic patients and the mean HbA1c of each center. For 100 diabetic patients, follow-up was provided by 0.42 physicians (0.23-1.50), 0.15 nurses (0-0.56), 0.12 dietitians (0-0.48), and 0.07 psychologists (0-0.30).

CONCLUSION

This study demonstrates a lack of human resources allocated to the management of type 1 diabetes in the region that is far below international recommendations. The proportion of children achieving the international glycemic target is low. There is a clear need to improve glycemic control in children, which will only be possible with improved professional practices, encouraged by benchmark studies, and by increasing the size of our multidisciplinary teams.

Lung ultrasonography in patients with COVID-19: comparison with CT

AIM

To determine whether findings from lung ultrasound and chest high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) correlate when evaluating COVID-19 pulmonary involvement.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The present prospective single-centre study included consecutive symptomatic patients with reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)-proven COVID-19 who were not in the intensive care unit. All patients were assessed using HRCT and ultrasound of the lungs by distinct operators blinded to each other's findings. The number of areas (0-12) with B-lines and/or consolidations was evaluated using ultrasound and compared to the percentage and classification (absent or limited, <10%; moderate, 10-25%; extensive, 25-50%; severe, 50-75%; critical, >75%) of lung involvement on chest HRCT.

RESULTS

Data were analysed for 21 patients with COVID-19 (median [range] age 65 [37-90] years, 76% male) and excellent correlation was found between the ultrasound score for B-lines and the classification (p<0.01) and percentage of lung involvement on chest HRCT (r=0.935, p<0.001). In addition, the ultrasound score correlated positively with supplemental oxygen therapy (r=0.45, p=0.041) and negatively with minimal oxygen saturation at ambient air (r=-0.652, p<0.01).

CONCLUSION

The present study suggests that among COVID-19 patients, lung ultrasound and HRCT findings agree in quantifying lung involvement and oxygen parameters. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, lung ultrasound could be a relevant alternative to chest HRCT.

Stomoxys calcitrans, mechanical vector of virulent Besnoitia besnoiti from chronically infected cattle to susceptible rabbit

Cattle besnoitiosis caused by Besnoitia besnoiti (Eucoccidiorida: Sarcocystidae) is a re-emerging disease in Europe. Its mechanical transmission by biting flies has not been investigated since the 1960s. The aim of this study was to re-examine the ability of Stomoxys calcitrans (Diptera: Muscidae) to transmit virulent B. besnoiti bradyzoites from chronically infected cows to susceptible rabbits. Three batches of 300 stable flies were allowed to take an interrupted bloodmeal on chronically infected cows, followed by an immediate bloodmeal on three rabbits (Group B). A control group of rabbits and a group exposed to the bites of non-infected S. calcitrans were included in the study. Blood quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analyses, and clinical, serological and haematological surveys were performed in the three groups over 152 days until the rabbits were killed. Quantitative PCR analyses and histological examinations were performed in 24 tissue samples per rabbit. Only one rabbit in Group B exhibited clinical signs of the acute phase of besnoitiosis (hyperthermia, weight loss, regenerative anaemia and transient positive qPCR in blood) and was seroconverted. Parasite DNA was detected in four tissue samples from this rabbit, but no cysts were observed on histological examination. These findings indicate that S. calcitrans may act as a mechanical vector of B. besnoiti more efficiently than was previously considered.

The enantioselective addition of 1-fluoro-1-nitro(phenylsulfonyl)methane to isatin-derived ketimines

An asymmetric organocatalytic addition of fluorinated phenylsulfonylnitromethane to isatin-derived ketimines was developed. The reaction was efficiently catalyzed by a chiral tertiary amine, cinchonine. This methodology provides a new type of optically active compound with two adjacent quaternary carbon stereocenters in good yield (up to 96%), with moderate diastereoselectivity (up to 5.7 : 1 dr) and excellent enantioselectivity (up to 98/96% ee).

A real-time PCR approach to identify anthelmintic-resistant nematodes in sheep farms

Resistance to fenbendazole, ivermectin, and moxidectin was explored by a fecal egg count reduction test in four meat sheep flocks in southwestern France where anthelmintic resistance was suspected. The FECR test results of the present study confirmed the presence of benzimidazole resistance in three out of the four farms and the presence of ivermectin resistance in one flock. In addition, a suspicion of moxidectin resistance was shown in this latter farm. Both conventional morphological and molecular identifications were performed on larval cultures before and after the treatment in the studied farms. A high positive correlation was found between the number of larvae counted under binocular microscope and the number of larvae estimated by the qPCR analysis (R ² = 0.88) and a high Cohen's Kappa value (0.91) in the detection of strongylid larvae in larval cultures. According to qPCR results, Trichostrongylus species demonstrated high levels of BZ resistance and Teladorsagia circumcincta was involved in the IVM resistance in one farm. The molecular procedures used in this study have the potential to be beneficial for anthelmintic resistance surveillance in sheep industry.

Evaluation of spinosad for the oral treatment and control of flea infestations on cats in Europe

METHODS

An ectoparasiticide containing spinosad was evaluated as an oral formulation for cats. Two European laboratory studies and a European multicentre field efficacy and safety study assessed the use of a chewable tablet formulation of spinosad at a dose range of 50-75 mg/kg for treatment and control of flea infestations on cats.

RESULTS

The studies with experimentally infested cats consistently demonstrated persistent activity against Ctenocephalides felis with >98 per cent efficacy at four weeks post-treatment. In the field study with naturally infested client-owned cats from 18 clinics across Germany and Italy, two monthly doses of spinosad were administered; selamectin was the comparator product. Safety was evaluated in 226 cats, each receiving at least one dose of spinosad or selamectin; both products were well tolerated. 113 spinosad-treated cats and 71 selamectin-treated cats showed >97 per cent reductions in geometric mean flea counts within 14 days post-treatment and at 60 days post-treatment efficacy was >98 per cent in both groups. Analysis of success rates showed 96 per cent in spinosad-treated cats compared with 90.9 per cent in selamectin-treated cats at day 60. The spinosad tablets were successfully administered to over 98 percent of cats. These studies indicate that this formulation of spinosad is safe and efficacious for treatment and prevention of flea infestations in cats.

Feeding and breeding aspects of Stomoxys calcitrans (Diptera: Muscidae) under laboratory conditions

Bionomic aspects of Stomoxys calcitrans (Linnaeus, 1758) (Diptera: Muscidae) were studied under laboratory conditions. For this reason, laboratory-rearing techniques were optimized at the National Veterinary School of Toulouse. The colony was maintained at 25±2°C, 50±10% RH under a 12-hour light cycle and observed daily. The size of each adult cage is 30x30x30 cm and designed to house about 500-1,000 flies. The average cycle from egg to adult was 19.2±1.7 days. The mean longevity of imagos was 9.3±5.8 days and not significantly different between sexes. Stable flies were split into two groups; the first was fed with blood, honey and water, and the second was fed only with honey and water. The mean weight of a blood meal was 11.1±3.8 mg with no significant differences between males and females. The mean longevity of non-blood fed flies was found to be significantly higher (10.4±3.9 days) than those fed with blood. The maximum lifespan was shorter for non-blood fed males (17 days) and females (18 days) than for those fed with blood (females: 24 days, males: 23 days). Under these laboratory conditions, S. calcitrans rearing was successfully established. In the end, the number of expected generations of S. calcitrans and the net reproduction rate were estimated to be 11.8 generations/year and 16.2 living females per female respectively.

No detection of Besnoitia besnoiti DNA in the semen of chronically infected bulls

Bovine besnoitiosis is a chronic and debilitating disease observed in many European countries that may cause important economic losses in cattle. The recent widespread of the parasite in Europe had led the European Food Safety Authority to declare bovine besnoitiosis as a re-emerging disease in Europe. Many aspects of the epidemiology of bovine besnoitiosis such as the main routes of transmission are still unclear and need to be further studied. Among the different hypotheses, a sexual transmission has not yet been investigated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of Besnoitia besnoiti DNA in the semen of naturally infected bulls by using a highly sensitive method (real-time qPCR). Both pre-sperm and sperm fractions of 40 bulls, including seronegative (n = 11), seropositive subclinically (n = 17), and seropositive clinically (n = 12) infected animals, were collected by electroejaculation and analyzed by real-time qPCR. No B. besnoiti DNA was detected in 27 pre-sperm and 28 sperm fractions of the 40 examined bulls, suggesting that the transmission of B. besnoiti infection by the semen of chronically infected bulls is very unlikely.

Development of a protocol testing the ability of Stomoxys calcitrans (Linnaeus, 1758) (Diptera: Muscidae) to transmit Besnoitia besnoiti (Henry, 1913) (Apicomplexa: Sarcocystidae)

Cattle besnoitiosis due to the cyst-forming coccidian parasite Besnoitia besnoiti has recently been reported in expansion in Europe since the end of the twentieth century. The B. besnoiti life cycle and many epidemiological traits are still poorly known. Hematophagous flies, including the worldwide-distributed Stomoxys calcitrans, could be mechanical vectors in the contamination of mouthparts after the puncture of cutaneous cysts or ingestion of infected blood. In this study, a protocol is presented to assess more deeply the role of S. calcitrans, reared in laboratory conditions, in parasite transmission. A preliminary trial showed that stable flies could transmit tachyzoites from bovine artificially parasite-enriched blood to B. besnoiti-free blood using glass feeders. Evidence of transmission was provided by the detection of parasite DNA with Ct values ranging between 32 and 37 in the blood recipient. In a second time, a B. besnoiti-infected heifer harboring many cysts in its dermis was used as a donor of B. besnoiti. An interruption of the blood meal taken by 300 stable flies from this heifer was performed. Immediately after the blood meal was interrupted, they were transferred to a glass feeder containing B. besnoiti-free blood from a non-infected heifer. Quantitative PCR and modified direct fluorescence antibody test (dFAT) were used to detect B. besnoiti DNA and entire parasites, respectively, in the blood recipient, the mouthparts, and the gut contents of S. calcitrans at two time intervals: 1 and 24 h after the interrupted blood meal. Parasite DNA was detected at both time intervals (1 and 24 h) in all samples (blood recipient, mouthparts, and gut contents of stable flies) while entire parasites by dFAT were only found in the abdominal compartment 1 h after the interrupted blood meal. Then, S. calcitrans were able to carry B. besnoiti from chronically infected cattle to an artificial recipient in the conditions of the protocol.

Efficacy of permethrin, dinotefuran and pyriproxyfen on adult fleas, flea eggs collection, and flea egg development following transplantation of mature female fleas (Ctenocephalides felis felis) from cats to dogs

A novel spot-on formulation combining permethrin, pyriproxifen and dinotefuran (Vectra 3D™ spot-on solution for dogs) was evaluated in adult Beagle dogs in a study to determine adulticidal efficacy, egg laying inhibition and viability of Ctenocephalides felis felis eggs (development and emergence of fleas from the collected eggs). Prior to treatment sixteen dogs were checked for their ability to keep fleas 24 hours after infestation and were allocated to treatment groups: 8 dogs served as untreated controls, and 8 dogs were treated once with the tested formulation. The spot on was administered respecting the laboratory recommendations at a dosage of 65-126 mg/kg of permethrin; 8.9-17.4 mg/kg of dinotefuran and 0.8-1.5mg/kg of pyriproxyfen. Each dog was infested with 100 adult cat fleas ready to lay eggs after 72 hours spent feeding on cats. Dogs were infested 24 hours after treatment and then weekly during 63 days. Eggs were collected and counted 24 hours after each infestation and dogs were combed 48 hours after each infestation. Fleas were counted and removed. Collected eggs were placed in incubator to study their development in larvae and into newly emerged adults. A single treatment provided 99.7% adulticidal efficacy on fleas within 48 hours after treatment and controlled re-infestations for up to 30 days (efficacy >96.20%, p<0.05). The egg laying inhibition was over 92.3% for up to 29 days (p<0.05). The adult emergence inhibition remained 100% during 8 weeks after treatment and was 99.8% nine weeks after treatment (p<0.001).

Defining the concept of 'tick repellency' in veterinary medicine

Although widely used, the term repellency needs to be employed with care when applied to ticks and other periodic or permanent ectoparasites. Repellency has classically been used to describe the effects of a substance that causes a flying arthropod to make oriented movements away from its source. However, for crawling arthropods such as ticks, the term commonly subsumes a range of effects that include arthropod irritation and consequent avoiding or leaving the host, failing to attach, to bite, or to feed. The objective of the present article is to highlight the need for clarity, to propose consensus descriptions and methods for the evaluation of various effects on ticks caused by chemical substances.

Evaluation of spinosad for the oral treatment and control of flea infestations on dogs in Europe

The novel ectoparasiticide spinosad is a naturally occurring mixture of spinosyns A and D formed during a fermentation process. The spinosyns are tetracyclic macrolides with a unique ring system. Their mode of action differs from that of other commercially available insecticides. Laboratory and field trials were conducted to evaluate the use of spinosad in a chewable tablet at a dose range of 45 to 70 mg/kg for the treatment and control of flea infestations on dogs in Europe. Laboratory studies with artificially infested dogs confirmed persistent activity against Ctenocephalides felis of higher than 99 per cent at three weeks post-treatment with values of 96.5 to 97.8 per cent at four weeks. Two multicentric field trials with naturally infected client-owned animals in five European countries used selamectin as comparator. Monthly doses were given during the summer when many homes were heavily infested. Households with spinosad-treated dogs showed cumulative benefits with flea burdens reduced by about 97 per cent at 14 and 30 days and by 99.6 per cent at 60 and 90 days. Corresponding figures for selamectin were significantly lower (P<0.05) at all time points: between 88.5 and 91 per cent at 14 and 30 days, then 97.8 and 98.2 per cent at 60 and 90 days. Thus, the performance of spinosad compared favourably with that of the established reference product.

Results of a European multicentric field efficacy study of fipronil-(S) methoprene combination on flea infestation of dogs and cats during 2009 summer

Despite the increasing number of ectoparasiticides for pets and their use, flea infestations of cats and dogs are still widespread in Europe. It is therefore important to assess the maintenance of efficacy of the ectoparasiticides for cats and dogs. The present studies aimed to evaluate the efficacy of monthly treatments using a fipronil/(S)-methoprene combination spot-on (Frontline Combo) on dogs and cats from private veterinary clinics located in seven European countries. The survey was conducted for three months during the flea season 2009. A total of 233 dogs and 180 cats were included. Each animal was treated at Days 0 (Day 0), 30 (D30) and 60 (D60) at the vet clinics. For each animal, at least three flea counts were performed at D0, D30 and/or D60 and/or day 90 (Day 90) in order to evaluate the prevalence of flea infestation and the efficacy of control. At the beginning of the study the prevalence of infested animals was 41.63% (97/233) in dogs and 47.22% (85/180) in cats. At D90, the number of dogs remaining infested fell to 8/211 therefore 91.75% became flea-free. The number of infested cats fell from 85 to 9/173 at D90 therefore 89.41% were cured. All animals still infested at Day 90 were living under epidemiological conditions that favour heavy flea burdens. These results are similar or better to previous studies, indicating the continuous high level of efficacy for fipronil 10 years after launch.

Hydrolysis of benzonitrile herbicides by soil actinobacteria and metabolite toxicity

The soil actinobacteria Rhodococcus rhodochrous PA-34, Rhodococcus sp. NDB 1165 and Nocardia globerula NHB-2 grown in the presence of isobutyronitrile exhibited nitrilase activities towards benzonitrile (approx. 1.1-1.9 U mg(-1) dry cell weight). The resting cell suspensions eliminated benzonitrile and the benzonitrile analogues chloroxynil (3,5-dichloro-4-hydroxybenzonitrile), bromoxynil (3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxybenzonitrile) and ioxynil (3,5-diiodo-4-hydroxybenzonitrile) (0.5 mM each) from reaction mixtures at 30 degrees C and pH 8.0. The products were isolated and identified as the corresponding substituted benzoic acids. The reaction rates decreased in the order benzonitrile >> chloroxynil > bromoxynil > ioxynil in all strains. Depending on the strain, 92-100, 70-90 and 30-51% of chloroxynil, bromoxynil and ioxynil, respectively, was hydrolyzed after 5 h. After a 20-h incubation, almost full conversion of chloroxynil and bromoxynil was observed in all strains, while only about 60% of the added ioxynil was converted into carboxylic acid. The product of ioxynil was not metabolized any further, and those of the other two herbicides very slowly. None of the nitrilase-producing strains hydrolyzed dichlobenil (2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile). 3,5-Dibromo-4-hydroxybenzoic acid exhibited less inhibitory effect than bromoxynil both on luminescent bacteria and germinating seeds of Lactuca sativa. 3,5-Diiodo-4-hydroxybenzoic acid only exhibited lower toxicity than ioxynil in the latter test.

Bovine besnoitiosis: epidemiological and clinical aspects

Bovine besnoitiosis, due to the cyst-forming apicomplexan Besnoitia besnoiti, is widespread in Africa, in Asia and in the south of Europe. This infection leads to major economic losses in cattle production with a decrease in milk production, transient of definitive sterility of bulls and mortality. Since its emergence in Europe (Germany, Spain and Centre of France), more attention has been given to this infection during the last 10 years, including the recent development of serological methods for diagnosis. The life cycle of B. besnoiti remains a mystery: the definitive host is unknown and the transmission routes are poorly understood. B. besnoiti is thought to be transmitted mainly by hematophagous insects. This paper presents a review of what is currently known of the epidemiology of bovine besnoitiosis and the key manifestations of the disease. It highlights the urgent need for research programs to improve efficient and sustainable control methods.

Evaluation of speed and duration of efficacy of spinosad tablets for treatment and control of Ctenocephalides canis (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) infestations in dogs

A controlled clinical trial was performed to determine the duration of efficacy of a new oral insecticide formulation of spinosad for the control of experimentally induced Ctenocephalides canis infestations in dogs. Twelve Beagle dogs (two groups of six) were used in the study. Dogs in the treated group received spinosad tablets per os on D0 at the commercial dosage. All dogs were infested with 100 fleas on Days - 7, - 1, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35. The dogs were combed four hours after each infestation and fleas were counted and replaced on the coat. 24 hours after each infestation fleas were combed, counted and removed. The efficacy of the formulation was calculated four and 24 hours after the treatment and then four and 24 hours after each new infestation. The mean number of fleas on the control dogs was respectively between 65.1 and 83.3 at four hour counts and between 58.3 and 75.3 at 24 hour counts. The product was well tolerated. The treatment controlled the fleas already present on the skin with 81% efficacy at four hours and 100% efficacy at 24 hours. For the weekly infestations, the speed of action of the product was high: at four hours the efficacy was 100% at D7, 96% at D14, 74% at D21, 42% at D28, 12.90% at D35 and 12.8% at D42. The efficacy evaluated 24 hours after each infestation was approximately 100% during three weeks then 90% at D39, 81.4% at D36 and 80.4% at D43. A single dose of the new spinosad tablet formulation should control flea populations in dogs for four weeks as indicated in the claim (evaluation performed at 48 h for the registration). Spinosad tablet is the first product administered per os which acts so long and so quickly against adult fleas.

Efficacy of fipronil-(S)-methoprene, metaflumizone combined with amitraz, and pyriprole commercial spot-on products in preventing Culex pipiens pipiens from feeding on dogs

A controlled clinical trial was carried out to assess the effectiveness of pyriprole, metaflumizone combined with amitraz, and fipronil-(S)-methoprene commercial spot-on products in preventing adult female Culex pipiens pipiens from feeding on dogs. Twenty-four beagle dogs were tested for their attractiveness to the mosquitoes and ranked accordingly to produce four groups of equivalent sensitivity to mosquitoes; six were treated with the pyriprole spot-on, six with the metaflumizone combined with amitraz spot-on, six with the fipronil-(S)-methoprene spot-on, and six were left untreated. All the dogs were challenged with 50 unfed adult female Culex in cages for one hour seven days before the treatment, and one and seven days after it. The mosquitoes were checked for blood feeding after one hour and for mortality 24 hours after they had been released into the cages. There was a significant reduction in the number of engorged mosquitoes only with the fipronil-(S)-methoprene product and there were significantly more dead mosquitoes with this product and the pyriprole product, but their effects were too small for them to be recommended for use in a dirofilariosis prevention programme.

Efficacy of a combination of a fipronil-(S)-methoprene spot-on formulation and a deltamethrin-impregnated collar in controlling fleas and sandflies on dogs

This study investigated the use of two commercial products, a deltamethrin-impregnated collar and a fipronil-(S)-methoprene spot-on formulation, in combination to protect dogs against sandflies and fleas when they live in or travel to leishmaniasis-enzootic areas. Interactions, tolerance, and efficacy were evaluated. The combination was well tolerated by the six treated dogs. The antifeeding effect on Phlebotomus perniciosus ranged from 89.6% (day 1) to 99.51% (day 21) and exceeded 95% from day 7 through the end of the study; the mortality effect against P. perniciosus ranged from 87.52% (day 22) to 96.82% (day 15). The combination was 100% effective in controlling Ctenocephalides felis felis infestations for 36 days after treatment. These results suggest that it is feasible and advantageous to combine these two commercial products to protect dogs against sandflies and fleas in leishmaniasis-enzootic areas.

The effectiveness of a pyriprole (125 mg/ml) and a metaflumizone (150 mg/ml) combined with amitraz (150 mg/ml) spot-on treatment in preventing Phlebotomus perniciosus from feeding on dogs

A controlled clinical trial was performed to assess the effectiveness of a pyriprole (125 mg/ml) and a metaflumizone (150 mg/ml) combined with amitraz (150 mg/ml) spot-on treatment (recommended dosage) in preventing adult female sandflies (Phlebotomus perniciosus) from feeding on dogs. Sandfly mortality was also assessed. Twelve beagle dogs were used in the study. Prior to treatment they were checked for their attractiveness to sandflies, ranked accordingly to generate partner triplets of equivalent sensitivity to sandflies: four control dogs, four treated with the pyriprole and four with the metaflumizone spot-on. The dogs were challenged with 50 unfed adult female sandflies (8-10 days old), in cages for one hour on Day 1 and Day 7. The sandflies were checked for blood feeding and mortality at one hour, 24 hours and 48 hours after exposure to the dogs. A very poor anti-feeding effect (near 7%) was seen on sandflies with the metaflumizone combined with amitraz and no antifeeding effect was seen with pyriprole. The sandfly mortality effect as a result of exposure to treated dogs was under 20% for the two spot-on. The two formulations could not be proposed in a leishmaniosis prevention program.

A comparative evaluation of the speed of kill and duration of efficacy against weekly infestations with fleas on cats treated with fipronil-(S)-methoprene or metaflumizone

Spot-on formulations of metaflumizone and a combination of fipronil-(S)-methoprene were evaluated in adult cats to determine the duration of 24- and 48-hour efficacy and short-term speed of kill against adult cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis felis. Speed of kill efficacies (at 12, 18, 24, and 48 hours) were assessed against existing (day -1) infestations and against infestations at day 7, and efficacy was assessed 24 and 48 hours after weekly flea infestations through day 42. Cats treated with fipronil-(S)-methoprene had significantly (P<.01) fewer fleas than those treated with metaflumizone at 12 and 18 hours after treatment (day 0) and on the day 7 infestations. Fipronil-(S)-methoprene-treated cats also had significantly (P<.05) fewer fleas than metaflumizone-treated cats for all 24-hour counts from initial treatment on day 0 through infestation day 42 and for the 48-hour counts on day 28 through day 42.

Efficacy of fipronil-(S)-methoprene on fleas, flea egg collection, and flea egg development following transplantation of gravid fleas onto treated cats

The goal of this study was to assess the insect growth regulator activity of the combination product fipronil-(S)-methoprene under a severe challenge model. Gravid fleas were allowed to feed on untreated donor cats for 48 hours before being transplanted onto untreated control cats and treated cats (treated once on day 0); 24 hours later, adult fleas were collected from all cats and counted to assess the 24-hour kill efficacy against the transplanted fleas, and flea eggs were collected and incubated to assess viability. The process was repeated weekly for 11 weeks. The 24-hour efficacy against transplanted adult fleas in the treated group was about 100% for the first 3 weeks and gradually declined to 93.4% by week 6. Egg production numbers were reduced on the treated cats compared with controls, with geometric mean egg counts on treated cats reduced from 76.9% to 96.3% during the initial 6 weeks of the study. The combination product was 100% ovicidal through day 56 and was still about 98% effective against eggs at the end of the study (day 76).

Field evaluation of the efficacy and the safety of a combination of oxantel/pyrantel/praziquantel in the treatment of naturally acquired gastrointestinal nematode and/or cestode infestations in dogs in Europe

In five multicentre field trials, the efficacy and safety of a combination of oxantel/pyrantel/praziquantel (Dolpac), Vetoquinol SA) in the treatment of naturally acquired gastrointestinal nematode and/or cestode infestation in dogs was evaluated in northern and southern Europe. Forty-eight investigators from France, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Spain enrolled 329 dogs to be treated with the tested combination; 235 of these dogs complied with the inclusion criteria of the protocol and had a tested helminth identified on Day 0. A pooled analysis was performed on each of the following helminth species: Toxocara canis, Ancylostoma caninum, Toxascaris leonina, Trichuris vulpis, Uncinaria stenocephala, Taenia spp. and Dipylidium caninum, which were isolated on Day 0. The main efficacy criterion was the egg per gram (epg) percent reduction of the nematodes and the absence of proglottids and or eggs for the cestodes. After treatment, dogs were examined on Day 7, Day 14 and Day 21. The efficacy of the combination against Toxocara canis was 99.1%, 98.8% and 98.9% on Day 7, Day 14 and Day 21, respectively. At the same occasions the efficacy was, respectively, 99.2%, 99.2% and 99.3% against Ancylostoma caninum, 97.3%, 97.2% and 98.4% against Trichuris vulpis, 98.4%, 98.8% and 98.8% against Uncinaria stenocephala, 98.9%, 99.5% and 99.9% against Toxascaris leonina, 97.1%, 100% and 100% against Dipylidium caninum and 100% against Taenia spp.

Comparison of the activity of selamectin, imidacloprid and fipronil for the treatment of cats infested experimentally with Ctenocephalides felis felis and Ctenocephalides felis strongylus

Twenty adult, domestic short hair cats were randomly allocated into four groups of five cats and housed in separated cages. Each cat was infested with 25 fleas Ctenocephalides felis felis and 25 Ctenocephalides felis strongylus and 2 days later (day 0) the cats in group 1, 2 and 3 received a spot on application of selamectin, imidacloprid or fipronil, respectively, while the cats in group four were not treated. The cats were combed 48 h later, the fleas were removed, counted and their subspecies were determined. All the cats were reinfested with the same number of the two subspecies of fleas on days 7, 14, 21, 29 and 35. The efficacy of each treatment was calculated 48 h after each infestation. The mean number of fleas on the control cats was 16.4 C. f. felis and 13.4 C. f. strongylus. The three treatments were effective for the first 31 days for C. f. felis and for the full 37 days for C. f. strongylus. Over the first 31 days, the efficacy of selamectin ranged from 89 to 100% and 85 to 100% against C. f. felis and C. f. strongylus, respectively, the efficacy of imidacloprid ranged from 76 to 100% and 92 to 100% and the efficacy of fipronil ranged from 98 to 100% and 97 to 100% against C. f. felis and C. f. strongylus. There were no significant differences between the control of C. f. felis and C. f. strongylus by the three products.

Étude de quelques paramètres écologiques deCtenocephalides felis strongylus(Jordan, 1925) (Siphonaptera : Pulicidae)

Among the fleas of medico-veterinary interest, Ctenocephalides felis (Bouché, 1 835) is the one most studied. This taxon includes two subspecies: Ctenocephalides f. felis, and Ctenocephalides f. strongylus (Jordan, 1925); only C. f. felis has been the subject of almost all the studies available. We were, thus, interested in C. f. strongylus which can be regarded as the species of substitution of C. f. felis on the African continent. The purpose of our work was to establish some biological parameters such as: hatching of eggs, cycle of development and emergence of adults. These data were compared with those available on C. f. felis. With temperatures ranging between 19 degrees C and 29 degrees C and a relative humidity (HR) of 75 % +/- 5, the hatching rates of eggs observed from the two subspecies of C. felis, are higher than 88 %. The optimal temperature of eggs hatching for C. felis is 29 degrees C, with more than 70 % of hatching obtained in 1-2 days after the laying. The larval developments of the two subspecies are almost identical and function of the temperature 18-9 days with 27 degrees C). Only differs the minimal duration of the progressive cycle. For C. f. strongylus, it lasts in 16-17 days at 29 degrees C, 20-21 days at 27 degrees C and 38 days at 19 degrees C. For C. f. felis, published values give report of 15 days at 27 degrees C and 17 days at 24 degrees C. The emergence of adults of C. f. strongylus takes eight to ten days between 19 degrees C and 29 degrees C, while data published on C. f. felis are about 26 days at 19 degrees C and 15 days at 27 degrees C.

Pharmacokinetics of Selamectin in Dogs after Topical Application

Some pharmacokinetic parameters of selamectin were determined in male (n = 5) and female (n = 5) Beagle dogs following a topical application at a dose rate of 6 mg/kg. The plasma concentration versus time data for the drug were analysed using a one-compartment model. The maximum plasma concentrations of 12.72 +/- 5.13 ng/ml for males and 22.65 +/- 11.95 ng/ml for females occurred around 5 days after administration. The area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) was 192.08 +/- 63.85 ng.day/ml for males and 370.97 +/- 146.87 ng.day/ml for females. The mean residence time was the same in males and females (12.55 days). This study reveals a sex-influence on the disposition of selamectin in the plasma of dogs, which implies that further information will be needed for correlation with efficacy studies in dogs.

Comparison of two techniques for diagnosis of giardiasis in dogs

Giardiasis is an intestinal parasitosis affecting dogs and able to infect human beings. Its diagnosis can not be done with the only clinical signs, the main of which is non characteristic diarrhoea. It implicates to perform further tests to detect the parasite. The zinc sulfate concentration technique (ZSCT) is the more effective one if performed on two or three successive days. Fecal ELISA kits have been developed to detect Giardia in humans and were found to be less sensitive than the ZSCT in dogs. In this study, we used 30 infected Beagles to compare the sensitivity of one, two or three fecal examinations following ZSCT and one or two ELISA tests. We conclude that if a single ZSCT is insufficient, two or three ZSCT and one or two ELISA using the commercial kit ProSpecT Giardia have almost the same sensitivity.

Comparison of the activity of selamectin, imidacloprid and fipronil for the treatment of dogs infested experimentally with Ctenocephalides canis and Ctenocephalides felis felis

Twenty-four beagles were randomly allocated into four groups of six and housed in separate cages. Each dog was infested with 25 Ctenocephalides canis and 25 Ctenocephalides felis felis and two days later (day 0) the dogs in groups 1, 2 and 3 received a spot-on application of selamectin (6 mg/kg), imidacloprid (10 mg/kg), or fipronil (6-7 mg/kg), respectively, while the dogs in group 4 were not treated. The dogs were combed 48 hours later, the fleas were removed, counted and their species were determined. All the dogs were reinfested with the same number of the two species of fleas on days 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35, and the efficacy of the treatments was calculated 48 hours after each infestation. The mean numbers of fleas on the control dogs were 19.8 C. canis and 14.7 C. felis felis. The three treatments were effective for the full 35 days of the trial; over the first 28 days, the efficacy of selamectin ranged from 81 to 100 and 92 to 99 per cent against C. felis felis and C canis, respectively, the efficacy of imidacloprid ranged from 98 to 100 per cent and the efficacy of fipronil was 100 per cent against both species. There were no significant differences between the three treatments.

Determination of selamectin in dog plasma by high performance liquid chromatography with automated solid phase extraction and fluorescence detection

A method is described for the determination of selamectin in dog plasma, using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection (excitation and emission wavelengths fixed at 355 and 465 nm, respectively). The fluorescent derivative was obtained by condensation reaction with trifluoroacetic anhydride and N-methylimidazole. The method employs 1 mL plasma samples and gives linear calibration graphs (r = 0.999) over the concentration range studied (0.5-50 ng mL(-1)). Automatic solid phase extraction using the benchmate procedure was used for sample preparation. This method permits the determination of selamectin at levels as low as 0.1 ng mL(-1) and its suitability was demonstrated by a pharmacokinetic study on a dog receiving the therapeutic dose (Spot-on administration).

First blood meal of Ctenocephalides canis (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) on dogs: time to initiation of feeding and duration

Two experiments were conducted on dogs to evaluate interval to initiation and duration of the first blood meal of Ctenocephalides canis (Curtis). Percentage of fed male and female fleas was calculated for fleas held on dogs for 5, 15, 30, 60 min, 6, and 24 hr. Duration of first blood meal was also measured for individual fleas confined on dogs. When fleas were free in the hair coat, 21.2% had begun blood feeding within 5 min. After 1 hr, 72.5% of fleas had fed. After 6 hr, 95.2% of males and 100% of females had taken a blood meal, and 24 hr after deposition all fleas had fed. There was no significant difference between the 2 sexes. The mean delay between deposition and biting for fleas that began feeding within 15 min was 2 min 52 sec +/- 3 min 2 sec for female fleas and 3 min 8 sec +/- 2 min 45 sec for males. The mean duration of female and male meals was 5 min 3 sec +/- 3 min 41 sec and 6 min 9 sec +/- 6 min 8 sec, respectively. There was no significant difference between the 2 sexes. The dog flea took its blood meal on dogs more slowly than the cat flea did on cats; this meal was significantly longer for Ctenocephalides felis felis (Bouche) than for C. canis.

A comparison of jump performances of the dog flea, Ctenocephalides canis (Curtis, 1826) and the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis felis (Bouché, 1835)

Jump performances of Ctenocephalides canis and Ctenocephalides felis felis have been measured and compared on unfed young imagos. The mean length of the C. felis felis jump was 19.9+/-9.1cm; minimum jump was 2cm, and the maximum was one 48cm. The C. canis jump was significantly longer (30.4+/-9.1cm; from 3 to 50cm). For height jump evaluation, grey plastic cylindric tubes measuring 9cm in diameter were used. Their height was increasing from 1 to 30cm by 1cm. Groups of 10 fleas of the same species were deposited on the base of the tube. The number of fleas which succeeded in jumping above the tube was recorded. The mean height jump carried out by 50% of fleas was calculated after linearisation of the curves: it was 15.5 and 13.2cm for C. canis and C. felis, respectively. The highest jump was 25 for C. canis and 17cm for C. felis.

First bloodmeal of Ctenocephalides felis felis (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) on cats: time to initiation and duration of feeding

Three experiments were conducted on cats to evaluate precocity and duration of the first blood meal of Ctenocephalides felis felis (Bouché). Percentage of engorged fleas was calculated for fleas held on cats for 5, 15, 30, and 60 min. Duration of first blood meal was also measured for individual fleas confined on cats. When fleas are free in the hair coat, 24.9% are engorged after 5 min and 97.2% are engorged after 1 h. Fleas confined to a vial on the cats fed significantly sooner; 60% of females were engorged within 5 min. The mean delay between deposition and biting for fleas, which began feeding within 15 min, was 24 s +/- 31 s for females and 23 s +/- 44 s for males. The mean duration of meals was 25 +/- 18 min for females and 11 +/- 8 min for males.

Efficacy of an adulticide used alone or in combination with an insect growth regulator for flea infestations of dogs housed in simulated home environments

OBJECTIVE

To determine the effect of an adulticide on flea populations of dogs and to evaluate efficacy of combined use of the adulticide and an insect growth regulator (IGR) in dogs with experimentally induced flea infestations.

ANIMALS

40 adult Beagles.

PROCEDURE

Each group of 5 dogs was housed in a separate room. Each dog was infested 3 times with 50 fleas, and fleas were counted beginning on day -21. Groups of dogs and treatments (initiated on day 0) were as follows: 1, adulticide once; 2, adulticide on days 0 and 7; 3, adulticide on days 0, 3, and 7; 4, sham treatment; 5, IGR monthly; 6, IGR monthly plus adulticide once weekly for 6 weeks; 7, IGR monthly plus adulticide twice weekly for 6 weeks; 8, sham treatment. Flea counts were compared between treated and control dogs.

RESULTS

By 24 hours after initial treatment, all adult fleas but 1 were dead in treated dogs. In groups 1 and 3, populations increased to 15 to 20 fleas/dog 2 months after treatment, compared with 48 fleas/dog in group 4. After treatment, mean flea counts were significantly lower for groups 1, 2, and 3, relative to group 4. Efficacy of treatment for group 5, relative to group 8, was > 94% after day 84. Efficacy of treatment for groups 6 and 7 was 99% after day 28.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Treatment with adulticide alone or in combination with an IGR had better efficacy, compared with sham treatment or IGR alone. Administration of adulticide twice weekly was not more efficacious than treatment once weekly.

Activity of a deltamethrin shampoo against Ctenocephalides felis and Rhipicephalus sanguineus in dogs

A controlled clinical trial was undertaken to assess the efficacy of an application of a 0.07% deltamethrin shampoo against fleas and ticks in dogs. Twenty beagles, housed in separate cages, were randomly allocated into two groups of 10. The dogs were infested with 50 Ctenocephalides felis and 50 Rhipicephalus sanguineus each, and parasites were counted 24 h (fleas) and 72 h (ticks) later (Day 0). Dogs, when state, were then treated with 25 ml of a shampoo containing 0.07% deltamethrin (Group 1). Dogs in Group 2 were the controls. Fleas and ticks were counted 24 h (Day 1) and 48 h (Day 2) after the shampoo was applied, and the parasites were then removed. All the dogs were reinfested with fleas and ticks on Days 2, 7, 9, 14, 16 and 20. Parasites were counted 24 and 48 h after each reinfestation. Effectiveness against fleas was calculated 24 h after infestation, and against ticks 48 h after infestation. This study showed that the application of 25 ml of shampoo containing 0.07% deltamethrin to beagle dogs weighing between 10.2 and 12 kg was very well tolerated. It controlled the parasites present on the animals at the time of application: with an efficacy of 100% against fleas 24 h after treatment and an efficacy of 95% against ticks 48 h after treatment. The treatment protected against flea reinfestations with an efficacy of 100% during the first week, >98% in the second week and >95% in the third week. It also gave >99% protection against tick reinfestations in the first week and >96% in the second week.

Antifeeding effect of several insecticidal formulations against Ctenocephalides felis on cats

Evaluation of insecticidal activity of flea products is generally based on counting live fleas in the animal's coat 24 and 48 hours following artificial infestation. This approach, however, does not allow to specify whether the fleas have had the opportunity to bite and take a bloodmeal prior to their death. To address this question, 30 cats were alloted to six groups of five animals. Each cat was housed in a separate cage. At Day 0, each group of cats received a single treatment as follows: Group 1: spot-on application of imidacloprid: cats < 4 kg: 40 mg/cat, cats > or = 4 kg: 80 mg/cat (Advantage). Group 2: spot-on application of fipronil: 50 mg/cat (Frontline spot-on). Group 3: spray application of fipronil: 7.5 mg/kg b.w. (Frontline spray). Group 4: foam application of permethrin 40/60: 50 mg/kg b.w. (Defencat). Group 5: aerosol spray application of dichlorvos + fenitrothion: one second/kg b.w. (NuvanTop). Group 6: control group: cats were left untreated. One hour after treatment, each cat was infested with 50 unengorged young adult fleas, Ctenocephalides felis, deposited along the dorsal midline. One hour later, each cat was carefully combed using a fine-toothed comb (13 teeth/cm). Collected fleas were swatted to deteci blood in their abdomen. To the manufacturers respective product use instructions and efficacy claims, reeinfestations were made at Days 3, 7, 14 in all groups; at Days 21 and 30 in Groups 1, 2, 4, 6; at Days 35 and 42 in Groups 3 and 6. The cats were combed one hour after each reinfestation. The results indicate that the topical application of imidacloprid or fipronil does not prevent fleas from biting and feeding within the first hour after infestation prior to being killed while the topical application of dichlorvos/fenitrothion and permethrin let to a better than 80% decrease of the number of engorged fleas for three and seven days post treatment, respectively.

Comparative activity in dogs of deltamethrin- and diazinon-impregnated collars against Ctenocephalides felis

OBJECTIVE

To compare effectiveness of deltamethrin- and diazinon-impregnated collars against fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) in an experimental infestation.

ANIMALS

30 Beagles.

PROCEDURE

Dogs were housed in separate cages. Dogs were infested with 50 fleas each, and fleas were counted 24 hours later. Dogs were then fitted with a collar containing 4% deltamethrin (group 1) or 15% diazinon (group 2). Dogs in group 3 were controls. Fleas were counted 24 and 48 hours after collars were applied, and fleas were then removed. Dogs were reinfested with fleas on days 7, 14, 28, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 210. Fleas were counted 24 and 48 hours after each reinfestation.

RESULTS

48 hours after applying collars, flea counts were not notably decreased. Effectiveness in groups 1 and 2 was 24 and 29%, respectively. Infestation on day 7 was controlled, to a comparable extent, by both insecticides (effectiveness approx 85%). Effectiveness > 97% was obtained after collars had been worn for 14 days. Between days 14 and 91, both collars had comparable effectiveness (> 93%) that did not differ significantly. After day 91, effectiveness of the collar containing diazinon decreased sharply, whereas that of the collar containing deltamethrin remained > 90% until day 152.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE

The collar containing deltamethrin controlled flea populations on dogs beginning 14 days after application and continuing until day 150. The collar containing diazinon controlled infestation for 90 days. Deltamethrin-impregnated collars are a new formulation that can be introduced into a program to easily control fleas.

Susceptibility of the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) to four pyrethroids

The amounts of active ingredient required to kill adult Ctenocephalides felis fleas on filter insecticide impregnated papers were determined in an attempt to compare the activity of different active ingredients. The following compounds were tested: bioallethrin, deltamethrin, esbiothrin and permethrin. The LD50 and LD90 against Ctenocephalides felis were 121 and 770 mg/m2 respectively for bioallethrin, and 161 and 671 mg/m2 respectively for esbiothrin. For deltamethrin and permethrin, the LD50 were 0.38 and 23 mg/m2 respectively, and 15 and 60 mg/m2 respectively for LD90.

Use of injectable lufenuron for treatment of infestations of Ctenocephalides felis in cats

OBJECTIVE

To determine whether and for how long a single dose of a new injectable formulation of lufenuron would successfully control experimentally induced Ctenocephalides felis infestations in cats.

ANIMALS

15 cats (3 groups of 5).

PROCEDURE

Each group of cats was housed in a separate room. Each cat was infested with 150 fleas, and flea counts were checked weekly. Once flea populations had stabilized, cats were treated with lufenuron at a dosage of 5 mg/kg of body weight, s.c. (group 1) or 10 mg/kg, s.c. (group 2). Group-3 cats were not treated. Flea counts were checked weekly for 18 weeks, and effectiveness was determined by comparing flea counts for treated cats with flea counts for control cats. Cats were reinfested with fleas during weeks 19, 26, 36, and 49, and flea counts were again determined weekly.

RESULTS

Effectiveness for both dosages of lufenuron was > 90% by 5 weeks after treatment, > 95% by 9 weeks after treatment, and > 98% by 13 weeks after treatment. Reinfestations performed during weeks 19 and 26 were well controlled (ie, > 90% reduction in flea counts, compared with control group) in both groups of cats treated with lufenuron. Reinfestations performed during week 36 were well controlled only in cats treated with lufenuron at the higher dosage. Reinfestations performed during week 49 were not controlled in either group of treated cats.

CONCLUSIONS

A single dose of the new injectable formulation of lufenuron should control flea populations in cats for up to 26 weeks, even among cats that are periodically reinfested with fleas.

[Fleas and methods of control]

Over 2,000 species of fleas parasitize mammals and birds. A simplified study of their morphology indicates for the main identification criteria. After listing the main families of fleas, the author outlines the identification of species most often encountered by veterinarians. Knowledge of the different types of flea parasitism and their life cycles is essential for effective control measures. Control is justified by the direct and indirect pathogenic roles of fleas (transmission of plague, tularaemia, myxomatosis, Dipylidium caninum). Effective agents are organochlorine compounds, organophosphorus compounds, pyrethroids and insect growth regulators, available in various formulations to destroy parasitic fleas on animals or in the environment. A novel method is to administer a systemic growth regulator to dogs and cats, which persists in the bloodstream and inhibits the reproduction of fleas which feed on a treated animal. Advantages and disadvantages of each formulation are presented.

[Lice and methods of control]

The morphology and biology of sucking lice (Anoplura) and biting lice (Mallophaga) are described. A table shows the main species for given hosts and provides simplified keys for identification. Lice have a direct pathogenic effect (damage to skin and cutaneous appendages, fall in productivity) and an indirect effect (transmission of Rickettsia prowazeki, R. quintana and Borrelia recurrentis in human beings; African and classical swine fever virus, equine infectious anaemia virus and Dipylidium caninum in animals). Control methods, current active insecticides (and those being tested) and appropriate formulations are outlined.

Incidence of experimental fascioliasis on the activity of drug-metabolizing enzymes in lamb liver

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of a subclinical fascioliasis at various stages of its development (by week--4, 8, 12, and 16 weeks after the infestation by an oral administration of 150 metacercariae of Fasciola hepatica) on the activity of some hepatic drug-metabolizing systems in lamb. The parasitic pathology was ascertained at autopsy and by clinical observation of animals. Hepatic microsomal cytochrome P-450 content was significantly decreased (by 9-22%) in all infected groups of animals. In early stages of the parasitic disease, decreases in cytochrome b5 content (10-18%) and ethoxycoumarin O-deethylase (25%) were observed, whereas aminopyrine N-demethylase, benzphetamine N-demethylase, and aniline hydroxylase were significantly lowered by 8 to 16 weeks postinfection. Among investigated transferases, glutathione transferase was only decreased (28%) in animals killed 16 weeks after the infestation; in these animals a significant increase in microsomal gamma-glutamyltransferase was observed, probably related to the elevated plasma activity of this enzyme. By 8 weeks postinfection, a simultaneous increase in cytosolic calcium (38%) and decrease in cytosolic glutathione (22%) would correspond to an oxidative cell injury occurring in the course of fascioliasis. The consequences of the fascioliasis-induced decreases in liver-oxidative and conjugative liver drug metabolism are discussed.

Incidence of experimental fascioliasis on hepatic disposition of [3H]tetracycline and [14C]rafoxanide in rats

[7-3H]Tetracycline and [carbonyl-14C]rafoxanide were injected intravenously into anesthetized controls and rats in which experimental fascioliasis had been induced by 20 Fasciola hepatica metacercariae. The biliary excretion (1 and 3 h, respectively) of the radioactivity consisted of approximately 4% of the administered dose. In 4-week infested rats, biliary excretion of [3H]tetracycline and hepatic levels of radioactivity were decreased, whereas bile flow did not vary and plasma clearance of the antibiotic was significantly decreased in comparison with control animals. These differences could be the result of the fascioliasis-induced decrease in the hepatic uptake of tetracycline and the limited active transport for its output into bile canaliculi. No change in [14C]rafoxanide disposition was shown in infested rats.

Impairment of drug metabolism by the liver in experimental fascioliasis in the rat

Fascioliasis has been produced in the rat by an oral administration of 20 metacercariae of Fasciola hepatica. Hepatic microsomal cytochrome P450 and b5 contents and both aminopyrine demethylase and aniline hydroxylase activities have been measured during the course of the experimental distomiasis. The cytochrome P450 concentration and microsomal drug metabolizing enzymes generally fell by weeks 3 to 8 post-infestation and recovered to normal values thereafter. For the same period, both the histoenzymatically assayed liver cytochrome oxidase and arylsulphatase activities were reduced whereas there were correlated increases in glutamic pyruvic and glutamic oxaloacetic plasma transaminases. Tissue inflammation and destruction provoked by young histophagous migrating flukes could be responsible for these changes that have already been observed in several hepatic diseases. The possible influence of naturally-induced fasciolasis on liver drug metabolism is discussed.
