Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Total Variation (TV) minimization algorithms have achieved great attention due to the virtue of decreasing noise while preserving edges. The purpose of this work is to implement and evaluate two TV minimization methods in 3D. Their performance is analyzed through 3D visualization of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) data with volume rendering. METHODS Both filters were studied with real phantom and one clinical DBT data. One algorithm was applied sequentially to all slices and the other was applied to the entire volume at once. The suitable Lagrange multiplier used in each filter equation was studied to reach the minimum 3D TV and the maximum contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). Imaging blur was measured at 0° and 90° using two disks with different diameters (0.5 mm and 5.0 mm) and equal thickness. The quality of unfiltered and filtered data was analyzed with volume rendering at 0° and 90°. RESULTS For phantom data, with the sequential filter, a decrease of 25% in 3D TV value and an increase of 19% and 30% in CNR at 0° and 90°, respectively, were observed. When the filter is applied directly in 3D, TV value was reduced by 35% and an increase of 36% was achieved both for CNR at 0° and 90°. For the smaller disk, variations of 0% in width at half maximum (FWHM) at 0° and a decrease of about 2.5% for FWHM at 90° were observed for both filters. For the larger disk, there was a 2.5% increase in FWHM at 0° for both filters and a decrease of 6.28% and 1.69% in FWHM at 90° with the sequential filter and the 3D filter, respectively. When applied to clinical data, the performance of each filter was consistent with that obtained with the phantom. CONCLUSIONS Data analysis confirmed the relevance of these methods in improving quality of DBT images. Additionally, this type of 3D visualization showed that it may play an important complementary role in DBT imaging. It allows to visualize all DBT data at once and to analyze properly filters applied to all the three dimensions. Concise Abstract Total Variation (TV) minimization algorithms are one compressed sensing technique that has achieved great attention due to the virtue of decrease noise while preserve edges transitions. The purpose of this work is to solve the same TV minimization problem in DBT data, by studying two 3D filters. The obtained results were analyzed at 0° and 90° with a 3D visualization through volume rendering. The filters differ in their application. One considers a slice-by-slice optimization, sequentially traversing all slices of the data. The other considers the intensity values of adjacent slices to make this optimization on each voxel. The performance of each filter was also tested with a clinical case. The results obtained were very encouraging with a significantly increased contrast to noise ratio at 0° and 90° and a small reduction in blur at 90° (slight reduction of the out-of-plane artifact).

Comparison of manual and semi-automatic registration in augmented reality image-guided liver surgery: a clinical feasibility study. Surg Endosc 2020; 34:4702-4711. Abstract
BACKGROUND The laparoscopic approach to liver resection may reduce morbidity and hospital stay. However, uptake has been slow due to concerns about patient safety and oncological radicality. Image guidance systems may improve patient safety by enabling 3D visualisation of critical intra- and extrahepatic structures. Current systems suffer from non-intuitive visualisation and a complicated setup process. A novel image guidance system (SmartLiver), offering augmented reality visualisation and semi-automatic registration has been developed to address these issues. A clinical feasibility study evaluated the performance and usability of SmartLiver with either manual or semi-automatic registration. METHODS Intraoperative image guidance data were recorded and analysed in patients undergoing laparoscopic liver resection or cancer staging. Stereoscopic surface reconstruction and iterative closest point matching facilitated semi-automatic registration. The primary endpoint was defined as successful registration as determined by the operating surgeon. Secondary endpoints were system usability as assessed by a surgeon questionnaire and comparison of manual vs. semi-automatic registration accuracy. Since SmartLiver is still in development no attempt was made to evaluate its impact on perioperative outcomes. RESULTS The primary endpoint was achieved in 16 out of 18 patients. Initially semi-automatic registration failed because the IGS could not distinguish the liver surface from surrounding structures. Implementation of a deep learning algorithm enabled the IGS to overcome this issue and facilitate semi-automatic registration. Mean registration accuracy was 10.9 ± 4.2 mm (manual) vs. 13.9 ± 4.4 mm (semi-automatic) (Mean difference - 3 mm; p = 0.158). Surgeon feedback was positive about IGS handling and improved intraoperative orientation but also highlighted the need for a simpler setup process and better integration with laparoscopic ultrasound. CONCLUSION The technical feasibility of using SmartLiver intraoperatively has been demonstrated. With further improvements semi-automatic registration may enhance user friendliness and workflow of SmartLiver. Manual and semi-automatic registration accuracy were comparable but evaluation on a larger patient cohort is required to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Activation of transcription within chromatin has been correlated with the incorporation of the essential histone variant H2A.Z into nucleosomes. H2A.Z and other histone variants may establish structurally distinct chromosomal domains; however, the molecular mechanism by which they function is largely unknown. Here we report the 2.6 A crystal structure of a nucleosome core particle containing the histone variant H2A.Z. The overall structure is similar to that of the previously reported 2.8 A nucleosome structure containing major histone proteins. However, distinct localized changes result in the subtle destabilization of the interaction between the (H2A.Z-H2B) dimer and the (H3-H4)(2) tetramer. Moreover, H2A.Z nucleosomes have an altered surface that includes a metal ion. This altered surface may lead to changes in higher order structure, and/or could result in the association of specific nuclear proteins with H2A.Z. Finally, incorporation of H2A.Z and H2A within the same nucleosome is unlikely, due to significant changes in the interface between the two H2A.Z-H2B dimers.

Abstract
Fasciola hepatica causes significant morbidity and mortality in dairy cattle in the Andean region of Cajamarca, Peru, where prevalence of infection of up to 78% has been reported. ELISA and Western blot analyses were used to characterise antibody responses in dairy cattle to adult F. hepatica to excretory-secretory (E/S), somatic (SO) and surface (SU) antigens. Three groups of dairy cattle - calves, heifers and adult cows - naturally exposed to F. hepatica in this region, were monitored every 2 months over a 2-year period. Calves, heifers and adult cows all had antibodies which recognised a 28kDa protein in the SO preparation, whereas only adult cows had antibodies that recognised a 28kDa protein in E/S products. All three groups of cattle responded to a 60-66kDa group of proteins in E/S and SU preparations and a 17kDa antigen in SO products was recognised by antibodies from cows and heifers but not calves. The total antibody response to E/S antigens measured by ELISA, increased over time in calves and remained constantly high over the 2-year period in all three groups of cattle. Slight fluctuations in the antibody response occurred in the group of heifers and cows coinciding with seasonal changes in the level of challenge.

Abstract
Synthesis of the protein components of nuclear chromatin occurs in the cytoplasm, necessitating specific import into the nucleus. Here, we report the binding affinities of the nuclear localisation sequence (NLS)-binding importin subunits for a range of histones and chromatin assembly factors. The results suggest that import of histones to the nucleus may be mediated predominantly by importin beta1, whereas the import of the other components probably relies on the conventional alpha/beta1 import pathway. Differences in recognition by importin beta1 were observed between histone H2A and the variant H2AZ, as well as between histone H3/4 with or without acetylation. The results imply that different histone variants may possess distinct nuclear import properties, with acetylation possibly playing an inhibitory role through NLS masking.

Abstract
One way in which a distinct chromosomal domain could be established to carry out a specialized function is by the localized incorporation of specific histone variants into nucleosomes. H2AZ, one such variant of the histone protein H2A, is required for the survival of Drosophila melanogaster, Tetrahymena thermophila and mice (R. Faast et al., in preparation). To search for the unique features of Drosophila H2AZ (His2AvD, also referred to as H2AvD) that are required for its essential function, we have performed amino-acid swap experiments in which residues unique to Drosophila His2AvD were replaced with equivalently positioned Drosophila H2A.1 residues. Mutated His2AvD genes encoding modified versions of this histone were transformed into Drosophila and tested for their ability to rescue null-mutant lethality. We show that the unique feature of His2AvD does not reside in its histone fold but in its carboxy-terminal domain. This C-terminal region maps to a short alpha-helix in H2A that is buried deep inside the nucleosome core.

Abstract
The experiment aimed to measure the effect of constant and variable temperatures on the growth of Lymnaea viatrix snails, on the development of a Peruvian isolate of Fasciola hepatica eggs and on the development of F. hepatica in the snails. This was carried out by cultivating infected and uninfected snails and fluke eggs in artificial, temperature controlled chambers. L. viatrix snails were found to develop at a rate dependent on environmental temperature, but developed at least as well under conditions of varying temperature as at the same mean constant temperature. F. hepatica eggs held at constant or varying temperatures, developed at a rate comparable to other reports. However, eggs developing at varying temperatures appeared to have reduced hatchability. Parasite development within the snails was slow, though within the limits calculated from the literature, and varying temperature did not appear to reduce development compared to constant temperatures.

Abstract
Fasciolosis is recognised as a major problem in dairy cattle in Cajamarca, Peru. The infection has an annual cycle, with the major period of infection from January to March. A control programme, involving two doses of the fasciolicide triclabendazole aimed at reducing the passage of Fasciola hepatica eggs on to the pasture, together with the use of the molluscicide, niclosamide, was evaluated against traditional treatment programmes. The double treatment regimen did not significantly reduce the overall parasite burden, as measured by faecal egg counts, but did control the parasites to a level similar to that achieved by traditional programmes averaging 3-7 treatments per year. The cows' eosinophil counts and serum liver enzyme activities were significantly lower than in animals treated by the traditional programmes. The use of niclosamide in addition to the triclabendazole treatments gave no clear advantage, although there was a significant reduction in the number of intermediate host snails after the application of the molluscicide.

Abstract
Pregnant ewes were infected in midpregnancy with three isolates of Chlamydia pecorum derived from the feces of healthy lambs from three different farms. Oral infection, alone or together with Fasciola hepatica, did not result in tissue invasion, since all placental and fecal samples were negative for chlamydiae. Intravenous infection resulted in placental infection in 16 of 18 ewes in that chlamydiae were cultured from placentas or vaginal swabs. Two ewes bore dead lambs after a shortened gestation time. The chlamydiae isolated were all C. pecorum. There were no significant differences between the weights of the lambs from the infected groups and those from uninfected control ewes. Most ewes showed no serological evidence of infection by the complement fixation test; therefore, it is unlikely that the enteric subtype of C. pecorum is responsible for the cross-reactions sometimes seen in flocks being tested for C. psittaci infection.

Abstract
Within 13 days of the experimental infection of 15 oestrus-synchronised ewes with 2000 sporulated oocysts of Toxoplasma gondii at 80 to 90 days of gestation 11 had aborted. The infection induced pyrexia and specific antibody in all the ewes. One ewe resorbed its fetus, 11 ewes aborted and three delivered, at full term, live congenitally infected lambs whose pre-colostral serum was antibody-positive. Tissues from the aborted fetuses and placentae from the live lambs were examined for toxoplasma infection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the B1 gene and by mouse inoculation. The live lambs were all shown to be infected by both methods, but there was no evidence of infection in any of the tissues from the acute phase abortions, suggesting that these fatalities occurred before the placenta or the fetus had been invaded by T gondii. Such toxoplasma-induced, acute-phase abortions are likely to be impossible to diagnose from fetal tissues. These results have implications not only for the diagnosis of naturally occurring ovine abortions but also for the understanding of the pathogenesis of toxoplasma-induced abortion.

Abstract
Eighteen oestrus-synchronised ewes were infected experimentally with 1500 sporulated oocysts of Toxoplasma gondii between 80 and 90 days of gestation. The infection induced pyrexia and specific antibody in all the ewes. One ewe resorbed its fetus, five ewes aborted and 12 delivered live, congenitally-infected lambs whose pre-colostral serum was antibody-positive. Tissues from the aborted fetuses and placentae from the live lambs were examined for toxoplasma infection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the B1 gene and by mouse inoculation. Using a simple protocol of tissue preparation without DNA extraction and a nested format, PCR was as sensitive as mouse inoculation. Placental cotyledon gave a higher sensitivity of detection than brain, lung or liver, and 16 of 19 placentae were positive by PCR compared with 13 of 18 by mouse inoculation. In mock-infected tissues, as few as 10 tachyzoites could be detected. The PCR could be applied to tissues unfit for mouse inoculation.

Abstract
Faeces samples were taken per rectum from sheep on 26 farms in England and Wales and examined for the presence of chlamydia by culture in McCoy cell monolayers. Thirteen of the farms were known to have had abortion outbreaks associated with Chlamydia psittaci (enzootic abortion) and 13 were free of this infection. The chlamydia isolated were characterized by cultural techniques. Chlamydia were isolated from the faeces of lambs on all 26 farms and the prevalence of infection varied form 5-50% on individual farms. There was no significant difference between the proportion of infected lambs on farms where enzootic abortion was present or absent. Lambs first showed infection when they were 3 months old and the prevalence rate of infection increased up to 9 months old. No chlamydia were isolated from the faeces of 316 adult ewes. The chlamydia were identified as enteric rather than abortion type and thus were C. pecorum rather than C. psittaci.

Epidemiology of lameness in dairy cattle: the influence of cubicles and indoor and outdoor walking surfaces. Vet Rec 1996; 139:130-6. Abstract
A survey of cubicles and indoor and outdoor walking surfaces on 37 farms served by four veterinary practices in Somerset, Cheshire, Wirral and west. Wales was carried out in 1989 to 1991. A study of the space requirements of Friesian/Holstein cows at pasture showed that they required approximately 240 cm x 120 cm lying space and a further 60 cm lunging space for rising. By these standards, 87 per cent of the cubicles were too short and 50 per cent were too wide or too narrow. Over 1500 observations on cows lying down, rising and standing indicated that only 12 per cent of the cubicles permitted real freedom of movement; 91 per cent of top partition rails were judged to be too low and 70 per cent of bottom rails too low or too high. In addition, the kerb was very high in 76 per cent of the cubicles. As a result, 10 per cent of cows appeared moderately or severely restricted when lying down, 33 per cent when rising and 55 per cent when standing. Over 2000 cubicle beds were also studied; 75 per cent had a concrete base and of those, 63 per cent were judged to have too little bedding and 11 per cent next to none. Higher incidences and prevalences of lameness were associated with limited borrowing space (P < 0.01) low bottom rails (P < 0.05), high kerbs (P < 0.05) and inadequate bedding (P < 0.01). Of 3190 walking surfaces, only 25 per cent were classified as satisfactory in the first winter and 34 per cent in the second. In general, surfaces in silage bays were too rough and those in other sites were too smooth. The farms with the smoothest indoor walking surfaces had a significantly higher incidence of lameness (P < 0.01). Of 3335 outdoor walking surfaces only 25 per cent were classified as satisfactory, and 70 per cent were too rough. The incidence of lameness was not significantly related to these findings.

Abstract
Information from 37 dairy farms, in four regions of England and Wales provided data on 8991 lesions and the preventive trimming of 4837 cows' feet. Of the total of 13,828 forms returned, veterinary surgeons treated 32 per cent and farmers or stockmen 46 per cent. Of the 8645 lesions associated with episodes of lameness, lesions in the hindlimbs accounted for 92 per cent, of which 65 per cent were in the outer claw, 20 per cent in the skin and 14 per cent in the inner claw. Sole ulcers (40 per cent) and white line lesions (29 per cent) were the predominant diseases of horn, and digital dermatitis (40 per cent) was the most common disease of the skin. Subjective assessments showed that sandcrack, penetration of the sole by foreign bodies and interdigital necrobacillosis were associated with the most severe cases of lameness. There was a significant seasonal effect in the reporting of lesions.

Abstract
A survey was made of 37 dairy farms in Wirral, mid-Cheshire, mid-Somerset and Dyfed, Wales, to assess the incidence and prevalence of lameness in the cows between May 1989 and September 1991. The incidence was obtained from records made whenever a cow was examined for lameness or received preventive foot-trimming. The mean annual incidence was 54.6 new cases per 100 cows with a range from 10.7 to 170.1 and the mean values during summer and winter were 22.9 and 31.7, respectively. The prevalence of lameness was measured by regular visits at which locomotion was scored on a scale of 1 to 5, and the prevalence of lameness was calculated for each visit as the proportion of cows with scores of 3 or more. The mean annual prevalence over the whole period was 20.6 per cent with a range from 2.0 to 53.9 per cent for the 37 farms. The mean prevalences during summer and winter were 18.6 and 25.0 per cent, respectively. The prevalence measured at a single visit in midsummer or midwinter was significantly correlated with the mean prevalence over the whole corresponding period and may be useful as an assessment of the extent of lameness in a herd and the efficacy of control measures. There was evidence that training farmers to recognise early cases of lameness and request veterinary treatment resulted in a marked reduction in the duration of cases of lameness.

Abstract
Analysis of the genomic DNAs of chlamydial isolates from sheep, cattle, and pigs was performed by Southern blot hybridization and by restriction endonuclease (RE) profiling of DNA amplified by PCR. The hybridization probes were derived from whole genomic DNA, the major outer membrane protein (MOMP) gene, the 16S rRNA gene, and an avian Chlamydia psittaci isolate plasmid. The PCR analysis used targets in the MOMP gene, the 16S rRNA gene, and the 60-kDa cysteine-rich protein gene. Together, the results showed that although there was considerable heterogeneity in the DNA sequence in the MOMP gene region, all the isolates had the same underlying total genomic RE profiles and yielded identical RE profiles for the rRNA and 60-kDa-protein gene regions. Most of the isolates were found to hybridize with the plasmid probe. Comparison of the MOMP sequence of one of the isolates (P787) with that of a known Chlamydia pecorum strain together with the results of the RE analyses allowed the conclusion that the isolates should all be classified within this new species.

Responses of the post-term arterial duct to oxygen, prostaglandin E2, and the nitric oxide donor, 3-morpholinosydnonimine, in lambs and their clinical implications. Abstract
BACKGROUND Nitric oxide is a potent dilator of the pulmonary vasculature. There have been no previous reports on the action of nitric oxide on the arterial duct. OBJECTIVES To determine the responses of isolated post-term arterial duct rings from lambs to oxygen, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and the nitric oxide donor, 3-morpholinosydnonimine (SIN-1). SETTING Experimental laboratory. SUBJECTS Six neonatal lambs. METHODS Lambs aged 1-5 days were killed and the arterial duct and aorta excised and cut into rings. These were mounted on tension gauges in organ baths containing Krebs-Henseleit solution. Rings were exposed to increasing concentrations of oxygen, PGE2 and after preconstriction with potassium (40 mmol/l) to SIN-1. Tension and relaxation responses were recorded. RESULTS Increased oxygen tension resulted in increased tension in the ductal rings above 88.9 mm Hg as previously described. No response to PGE2 occurred before or after ductal rings were exposed to oxygen. SIN-1 caused relaxation of smooth muscle in the arterial duct to a similar degree as that in the aortic rings. CONCLUSIONS As previously shown, oxygen is a potent constrictor of the arterial duct. The post-term arterial duct does not relax in response to PGE2 possibly as a result of inactivation by oxygen of the special sensitivity of the duct to PGE2. SIN-1 is a potent smooth muscle relaxing agent in the term arterial duct and may have a role in the initial management of neonates with duct dependent pulmonary circulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Long-term maintenance of arterial duct patency by a catheter technique would be a valuable nonsurgical method of palliation for duct-dependent circulations. We used a new method: percutaneous radiofrequency thermal balloon angioplasty of neonatal lamb arterial ducts. METHODS AND RESULTS Radiofrequency balloons 5 or 6 mm in diameter were introduced via the femoral vein of 32 neonatal lambs and inflated to 4 atm. In 28, a radiofrequency generator was used to heat the saline/contrast mixture in the balloon to 65 degrees C (n = 2), 75 degrees C (n = 2), 85 degrees C (n = 10), 100 degrees C (n = 8), and 120 degrees C (n = 6). In 4 lambs, angioplasty alone was performed. Lambs were recatheterized to assess patency at intervals up to 78 weeks. Immediate results showed the arterial duct to be patent in all cases, with a mean rise in systolic pulmonary artery pressure of 13 +/- 8 mm Hg and a mean rise in pulmonary artery oxygen saturation of 12 +/- 15%. With a mean follow-up of 45.7 +/- 28 weeks, 3 of the 4 (75%) angioplasty alone ducts closed, but only 5 of the 28 (18%) radiofrequency-treated ducts (P < .05). The mean rise in oxygen saturation between the superior vena cava and the pulmonary artery was 7.6 +/- 7% at last follow-up. Follow-up angiography of the arterial ducts showed the development of stenoses in all patent ducts. CONCLUSIONS Radiofrequency thermal balloon angioplasty leads to long-term arterial duct patency in lambs in > 80% of the treated group and is significantly more effective than balloon angioplasty alone.

Abstract
The deaths on nine farms of lambs which had been fed cow colostrum as a substitute for ewe colostrum were investigated. Of 105 lambs which received cow colostrum, 65 (61.9 per cent) showed clinical signs of anaemia and 42 (40 per cent) died. The signs of anaemia usually appeared when the lambs were between eight and 12 days old. The most significant post mortem finding was the appearance of the bone marrow which was cream or grey rather than the normal bright red. The types of treatment which were given are summarised. Whey from samples of the colostrum fed to the lambs was tested for its effect on sheep red blood cells. Haemolysis or agglutination of the red cells occurred with some, though not all, of the samples which caused anaemia.

Abstract
Abortion and enteric isolates of Chlamydia psittaci from sheep differed in their growth in a fibroblastic cell culture derived from the small intestine of a lamb. Twenty abortion isolates, each from a different farm, produced large inclusions which could be passaged several times whereas 10 enteric isolates each from different farms (but from some of the farms of origin of the abortion isolates) produced sparse inclusions which could not be passaged. This appears to be a rapid method of distinguishing abortion and enteric isolates and may indicate different nutritional requirements or be related to the invasiveness of the isolates.

Ewe placental and lamb intestinal isolates of Chlamydia psittaci recovered from flocks affected with ovine enzootic abortion were examined by inclusion morphology, indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) and immunoblot analysis. Chlamydiae recovered from the faeces of sheep from two flocks free of clinical disease were also examined. In cell culture ovine abortion (OA) and intestinal isolates were distinguishable by inclusion development and morphology. Similarly, in two-way IIF tests with one week mouse antisera isolates fell into two distinct groups: abortion or intestinal. Immunoblotting with convalescent sheep abortion antiserum identified 30 out of at least 40 silver staining polypeptides as antigenic both in OA and intestinal isolates. The serum produced a similar reaction pattern to the resolved proteins of each OA isolate, indicating a higher degree of antigenic conservation among these isolates. Considerable cross reactivity between the OA and intestinal isolates was identified, but the serum also showed apparent molecular weight differences between antigens of the two types in the 87-116 kDa, 38-44 kDa and 26-28 kDa regions. Furthermore, the immunoblotting analysis revealed heterogeneity among the intestinal isolates, particularly in antigens between 87-116 kDa and 38-44 kDa.

Abstract
Four separate experiments were carried out by dosing dogs (Beagles and Border collies) and red foxes with protoscoleces obtained from hydatid cysts in sheep from mid-Wales. The dogs and foxes were killed at intervals over a period from 34-180 days after infection and the intestines were examined for Echinococcus granulosus. Border collie dogs were efficient hosts in that large numbers of worms developed, with gravid segments present by 55 days after infection; but Beagle dogs were poor hosts in that only small numbers of immature worms developed. Foxes were poor hosts in that few or no worms developed, but gravid segments were seen in three of 29 foxes. The worms showed morphological features similar to the 'sheep' rather than the 'horse' strain.

Comparison of Albendazole and Praziquantel therapy of Echinococcus granulosus in naturally infected sheep. Vet Parasitol 1990; 36:83-90. Abstract
The effects of albendazole (10 mg kg-1 day-1) and praziquantel (50 mg kg-1 day-1) for 6 weeks on naturally infected sheep with pulmonary cysts of Echinococcus granulosus of proven viability were studied. Immediately following therapy, one of three sheep treated with praziquantel had viable cysts and 7 months later one of two sheep had viable cysts. One sheep died during albendazole therapy, but 7 months following therapy only one of five sheep had viable cysts. Electron microscopy demonstrated necrotic germinal layer tissue in most albendazole-treated cysts and praziquantel also had an effect on cyst ultrastructure. These data suggest that recurrence in humans treated with albendazole may be small. Whilst praziquantel was not particularly effective in this animal model, its clear effect on the ultrastructure suggests that an increased dose and combination therapy with albendazole may be more effective.

Abstract
Analysis of a detergent-solubilized somatic antigen of Ostertagia ostertagi 3rd stage larvae by SDS-PAGE and Western blotting has revealed two specific antigens with apparent molecular weights of 17 and 43 kD under reducing conditions. Probing of the Ostertagia ostertagi preparation with preinfection control sera has shown two cross-reacting antigens with apparent molecular weights of 67 and 81 kD. Both the 17 and the 43 kD antigens were recognised by IgG1 which was the predominant reactive subclass. FPLC fractionation of the crude extract with gel filtration and ion-exchange columns demonstrated immune reactivity in discrete peaks. Comparisons of ELISA and lymphocyte transformation showed antigenic components reactive with both antibodies and primed lymphocytes.

Abstract
In a field survey of ovine infectious keratoconjunctivitis, the microbiological flora of 240 clinically unaffected eyes from sheep in 10 flocks was compared with the flora of an equivalent number of clinically affected eyes from 12 natural outbreaks of the disease. Totals of 16 and 17 genera of bacteria were recovered from unaffected and affected eyes, respectively. Staphylococcus, bacillus and branhamella were isolated significantly more often than the other genera of bacteria, in both the unaffected and affected eyes (P less than 0.05). Branhamella ovis and Escherichia coli occurred more frequently in affected eyes, and Staphylococcus aureus occurred more frequently in severely than mildly affected eyes. The genera Mycoplasma and Acholeplasma were isolated from both groups, and Mycoplasma conjunctivae occurred in 92 affected eyes (38.3 per cent), and 27 unaffected eyes (11.3 per cent).

Abstract
The presence of benzimidazole-resistant strains of equine small strongyles was confirmed in horses at two properties in north west England by a series of faecal egg counts and larval cultures after treatment with mebendazole. A trail formulation of mebendazole in combination with piperazine citrate gave greater reductions in faecal egg counts than mebendazole alone but was much less effective than pyrantel embonate or dichlorvos.

Abstract
Toxoplasmosis was thought to be a minor problem on a lowland sheep farm purchasing some 200 ewe lambs annually. Serological investigations and production records suggested a more substantial problem with most of the ewe lambs seroconverting during their first pregnancy, many while still at grass and receiving no supplementary food. Only 60 live lambs were produced per 100 ewe lambs tupped. It was known that cats occasionally inhabited the sheep houses, from which straw bedding was spread onto the pastures after lambing. Trials over two years with ewe lambs grazing either 'clean' or 'dirty' pastures indicated that the straw bedding was the most likely source of infection. Serial serological studies not only defined the time of infection but also showed that the ewe lambs could be kept free of infection and produce more live lambs; 58 live births came from 81 'clean' ewe lambs compared with 21 from 50 'dirty' ewe lambs.

Abstract
The epidemiology of hydatid disease in man in England and Wales, based on the data collected between 1981 and 1983 at the Hydatid Reference Laboratory of the Public Health Laboratory Service, is presented. The incidence of hydatid disease was 42 cases per annum, with 2 cases per million population occurring in Wales and 0.2 per million in England. The highest prevalence was in London amongst the immigrant population. The incidence in the indigenous population was 15.5 cases per annum, with 5.6 cases per million occurring in South Powys, parts of South Wales and Herefordshire. The population most at risk is the rural, farming community in that area, but the West Midlands is also an apparent focus of the disease.

Abstract
The etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of skin and soft tissue infections are discussed, and the results of clinical experience with ticarcillin plus clavulanate potassium in these diseases at one clinic are reported. In a randomized and controlled clinical trial, the safety and effectiveness of ticarcillin plus clavulanate potassium and cefazolin were compared in the treatment of soft tissue infections in 20 patients. The 12 patients in the group treated with ticarcillin plus clavulanate potassium included 10 men and two women, with a mean age of 61 years; the eight patients in the group treated with cefazolin were five men and three women, with a mean age of 63.8 years. Ticarcillin plus clavulanate potassium was administered for four to 26 days (mean 12.5 days), and cefazolin for four to 20 days (mean 12 days). There were 29 evaluable pathogens in the group receiving ticarcillin plus clavulanate potassium and 22 in the group receiving cefazolin. Of the 29 pathogens in the former group, 22 were eradicated; three reinfections or superinfections occurred but were ultimately eradicated, and four pathogens persisted. Eighteen of the 22 pathogens in the cefazolin-treated group were eliminated and the other four persisted. Clinically, six of the 12 patients in the ticarcillin plus clavulanate potassium-treated group had cures, four showed improvement, and two failed to show a response. In the cefazolin-treated group, five of the eight patients had cures, one showed improvement, and two failed to show a response.

Abstract
Embryo transfer was carried out on nine Texel donor ewes, one of them on two occasions, over two breeding seasons (1980 and 1981). The donors were prepared for superovulation on the farm by two different regimens and the recipients were also synchronised on the farm of origin. Surgery was carried out on donors and recipients at a veterinary practice and the techniques of anaesthesia, surgery and embryo transfer are described. Superovulation was variable and more than two ovulations were seen in only four of the 10 ewes. Forty-one corpora lutea were produced by the 10 ewes and 27 embryos were recovered. Twenty-one embryos were transferred to recipients and 14 lambs were produced. All the 10 donors except one produced lambs themselves. The value, economics and welfare aspects of the technique of embryo transfer under practice conditions are discussed and it is concluded that the procedure should not be carried out routinely but reserved for special circumstances.

Abstract
The immune status of a group of sheep naturally infected with hydatid cysts was investigated. Low specific anti-hydatid antibody (Sab) titres and negative results in intradermal and leucocyte migration tests occurred in hosts with high hydatid antigen-stimulated lymphocyte transformation (LT). Total (non-specific) IgG was elevated in infected sheep and was positively correlated with LT. Circulating hydatid antigen (cAg) was detectable in some infected sheep, but not in all of those with low Sab. Relationships between cAg, Sab and immune complex levels suggest that most cAg is present in immune complexes.

Abstract
Albendazole was given orally to sheep with naturally occurring live pulmonary and hepatic cysts. The viability of pulmonary cysts was established before treatment by thoracotomy and needle puncture. Both 10 and 20 mg/kg/day doses were found effective in that no viable protoscoleces were found after six weeks' treatment in either group while untreated controls still had viable cysts. In addition, treated animals showed macroscopic and electron microscopic changes. Bone marrow toxicity probably occurred in two sheep.

Abstract
Two Friesian cows were used to attempt to produce colostrum containing a high concentration of clostridial antibodies which could be fed to newborn lambs in order to passively transfer immunity to diseases caused by clostridia. One cow was given a commercial multicomponent clostridial sheep vaccine in two successive pregnancies and the second cow in one pregnancy. The first cow produced a low concentration of epsilon antitoxin (Clostridium perfringens, type D) in its blood and colostrum after the first course of three injections of vaccine. A higher concentration was produced by cow 2 after a course of six injections and by cow 1 after a further course of four injections in its next pregnancy. Two hundred ml of colostrum from cow 1 (after the second course of vaccine) was given to 12 newborn colostrum-deprived lambs. All showed a high concentration of antitoxin 48 hours later. The lambs were actively immunised by injections of the same clostridial vaccine at three and nine weeks or six and 12 weeks old and all produced sufficient antitoxin to protect up to slaughter at 24 weeks. It is concluded that colostrum from cows vaccinated with sheep clostridial antigens can be fed to protect lambs passively.

Abstract
Thirty-two patients with cysts caused by Echinococcus granulosus were treated with albendazole in a dosage of 10 mg/kg/day. Reversible abnormalities in liver-cell function tests were seen in five patients. Some radiological evidence of remission (on serial computed tomographic or ultrasound scanning) was seen in 15 of 22 patients undergoing a therapeutic course of albendazole (as opposed to those treated before or after surgery). In five patients, the cysts virtually disappeared. Apart from reduction in size, the appearance of a halo around the cysts and the apparent disappearance of daughter cysts has been seen. Serological findings have not correlated well with radiological or clinical improvement. Serum and cyst concentrations of albendazole sulfoxide (the principal metabolite) have been measured.

Abstract
Isolation of Chlamydia psittaci in McCoy cell coverslip cultures from clinical material from field cases of enzootic abortion of ewes proved more sensitive than diagnosis by examination of smears stained by Ziehl-Neelsen. Enzootic abortion could be diagnosed in the absence of fetal membranes by culture of fetal lung or liver tissue.

Abstract
Minimum inhibitory (MIC) and minimal lethal (MLC) concentrations of 30 antimicrobial agents were determined for field strains and for the A22 EAE vaccine strain of Chlamydia psittaci (ovis). No differences in susceptibility could be detected between strains. The antimicrobials could be divided into four groups. Group A had no effect on growth and development, Group B were bacteriostatic at concentrations in excess of 100 mg/l, Group C were bacteriostatic at concentrations of 10 mg/l or less but were bactericidal at concentrations above 10 mg/l and Group D were bactericidal at concentrations above 0.5 mg/l. The value of antimicrobials in aiding diagnosis and in the therapy of chlamydial abortion of ewes is discussed.

Abstract
The spread of enzootic abortion was observed in a flock of 37 unvaccinated Scottish blackface ewes, in mid-pregnancy at the start of the trial. Eight ewes were infected with the ZC 26 strain of chlamydia and allowed to run with 29 untreated controls until lambing was completed. All eight inoculated ewes aborted between 26 and 51 days after infection and chlamydial infection was demonstrated in seven of the abortions. Complement fixing antibodies were not detected in the controls until nine days after the first infected abortion, but within four weeks 69 per cent of the control ewes had developed significant complement fixation titres. Ten of the control ewes lost lambs, chlamydial infection was demonstrated in seven cases, two were undiagnosed and one was attributed to dystocia. The seven infected cases occurred between 69 and 87 days after the start of the trial and coincided with a further rise in the percentage of seropositive controls to a maximum of 90 per cent by the end of lambing.

Abstract
One hundred and forty mice were infected orally with 1000 embryonated Toxocara canis eggs. Groups of 10 mice were then treated with high doses of piperazine, mebendazole, oxfendazole, albendazole, fenbendazole and diethylcarbamazine for four days, either immediately after infection or three weeks after infection. The mice were killed three to six weeks after treatment and the number of larvae in the brains and muscles estimated and compared with those in untreated mice. Few larvae were recovered from the muscles of any of the mice, including the untreated controls, despite the use of a variety of recognised techniques. Large numbers of live larvae were recovered from the brains of the mice and there was no significant difference between the treated and untreated mice.
