Abstract
In the current study, we investigated decreased hatchability and increased embryonic mortality in two farms of layer breeders (flocks A1 and B1) and a farm of broiler breeders (flocks C1 and C2) from Austria, which also presented discoloration of eggshells in 2% of the eggs. After conducting clinical evaluations and the approval that the feed operator was common for flocks A1 and B1, and C1 and C2, it was decided to investigate the feed. Our findings revealed that the feed contained levels of nicarbazin and narasin up to five and 14 times, respectively, above the maximum limits allowed by the European Union for nontarget species. On the other hand, there were no significant abnormalities in vitamin levels, which were also described as the etiology of the noticed abnormalities. Switching to a noncontaminated feed resulted in the clinical signs and production parameters returning to expected ranges. This report emphasizes the significance of considering feed contamination by nicarbazin and narasin as a potential cause of hatchery losses in nontarget species, even in the absence of other clinical signs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRFs) has become an emerging therapy for treatment of patients with rib fractures. More commonly, it is used in the acute setting; however, delayed SSRF can be utilized for symptomatic rib fracture nonunions. Here, we describe our institution's experience with delayed SSRF, hypothesizing it is safe and resolves patient symptoms. METHODS This is a retrospective review of patients presenting to our Level I trauma center to undergo delayed SSRF for symptomatic nonunions from January 2017 to September 2022. Delayed SSRF was defined as SSRF over 2 weeks in the outpatient setting. Basic demographics were obtained. Outcomes of interest included mean pain score (preoperatively and postoperatively), intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital length of stay (LOS), and resolution of preoperative symptoms, specifically chest wall instability, with return to activities of daily living (ADLs). RESULTS Forty-four patients met inclusion criteria with a total of 156 symptomatic nonunion rib fractures that received delayed SSRF. The average age was 59.2 ± 11.9 years and median number of days from injury to SSRF was 172.5 (interquartile range, 27.5-200). The average number rib fractures plated per patient 3.5 ± 1.8. Only three patients required ICU admission postoperatively for no longer than 2 days. Median hospital LOS was 2 days (interquartile range 1-3 days). Average preoperative and postoperative pain score was 6.8 ± 1.9 and 2.02 ± 1.5, respectively ( p < 0.001). Chest wall instability and preoperative symptoms resolved in 93.2% of patients postoperatively ( p < 0.001). Two patients (4.5%) had postoperative complications that resolved after additional surgical intervention. Rib fracture healing was demonstrated on radiographic imaging during postoperative follow-up. CONCLUSION Delayed SSRF is safe and demonstrates significant resolution of preoperative symptoms by decreasing pain, improving chest wall stability, and allowing patients to return to activities of daily living. Abstract
BACKGROUND Surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRFs) continues to gain popularity due to patient benefits. However, little has been produced regarding the economic benefits of SSRF and its impact on hospital metrics such as Vizient. The aim of this study was to explore these benefits hypothesizing SSRF will demonstrate positive return on investment (ROI) for a health care institution. METHODS This is a retrospective review of all rib fracture patients over 5 years at our Level I trauma center. Patients were grouped into SSRF versus nonoperative management. Basic demographics were obtained including case mix index (CMI). Outcomes included narcotic requirements in morphine milliequivalents prior to discharge, mortality, and discharge disposition. Furthermore, actual hospital length of stay (ALOS) versus Vizient expected length of stay were compared between cohorts. Contribution margin (CM) was also calculated. Independent t-test, paired t-test, and linear regression analysis were performed, and significance set at p < 0.05. RESULTS A total of 1,639 patients were included; 230 (14%) underwent SSRF. Age, gender, and Injury Severity Score were similar. Surgical stabilization of rib fracture patients had more ribs fractured (7 vs. 4; p < 0.001) and more patients with flail chest (43.5% vs. 6.7%; p < 0.001). Surgical stabilization of rib fracture patients also had a significantly higher CMI (4.33 vs. 2.78; p = 0.001). Narcotic requirements and mortality were less in the SSRF cohort; 155 versus 246 morphine milliequivalents ( p < 0.001) and 1.7% versus 7.1% ( p = 0.003), respectively. Surgical stabilization of rib fracture patients were more likely to be discharged home (70.4% vs. 63.7%; p = 0.006). Surgical stabilization of rib fracture patients demonstrated shorter ALOS where nonoperative management patients demonstrated longer ALOS compared with Vizient expected length of stay. Contribution margins for SSRF patients were significantly higher and linear regression analysis showed a CM $1,128.14 higher per patient undergoing SSRF ( p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Patients undergoing SSRF demonstrate a significant ROI for a health care organization. Despite SSRF patients having a higher CMI, they were able to be discharged sooner than expected by Vizient calculations resulting in better a CM. Abstract
INTRODUCTION To investigate the effectiveness of third-wave cognitive behavior therapies in the treatment of peripartum depression. METHOD A systematic review of the effectiveness of psychological interventions in treating peripartum depression focus on the Third Wave has been conducted. The electronic databases MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Web of Science and Clinical Trials were searched, using a combination of different search terms. Data were independently extracted by two authors and a synthesis of the results was offered. Methodological quality was assessed by three authors, using ROBE-2 and MINORS. Search date was conducted in February 2022 and the search was re-run in November 2022 for new entries. FINDINGS Six papers were included and reported, focused on, the effectiveness of Third Wave approach interventions in reducing depressive symptoms. Papers included the following intervention approaches: Behavioral intervention (n = 2), Mindfulness (n = 2), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (n = 1) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (n = 1). All six papers were consistent in that interventions lead to a decrease in depression symptoms. However, risk of bias evaluation showed that all were critical low, but one paper was high quality. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE AND RESEARCH Systematic review showed that third-wave approaches are promising in effectiveness to reduce depression symptoms in peripartum women. However, more high-quality studies with follow-up are needed.

Abstract
In 2019, outbreaks of hepatitis-splenomegaly syndrome (HSS) were observed in six commercial layer chicken flocks, belonging to three different Polish farms, and characterized by increased mortality, hemorrhagic hepatitis with attached blood clots on the liver surface, and splenomegaly. Diseased flocks were initially investigated for the presence of avian hepatitis E virus (aHEV) - the etiological agent of HSS - by conventional reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, which revealed aHEV sequences clustering separately from all known aHEV genotypes. Additionally, an aHEV genome was identified for the first time in common pheasants, from a flock in France, using Next Generation Sequencing. This genome clustered together with the Polish aHEVs here investigated. Complete genome aHEV sequences from the HSS outbreaks confirmed the divergent cluster, with a shared nucleotide sequence identity of 79.6-83.2% with other aHEVs, which we propose to comprise a novel aHEV genotype - genotype 7. Histology and immunohistochemistry investigations in the liver and spleen established an association between aHEV and the observed lesions in the affected birds, consolidating the knowledge on the pathogenesis of aHEV, which is still largely unknown. Thus, the present investigation extends the natural host range and genotypes of aHEV and strengthens knowledge on the pathogenesis of HSS.

Abstract
Cutaneous fowlpox is a disease of chickens and turkeys caused by the fowlpox virus (FWPV), characterized by the development of proliferative lesions and scabs on unfeathered areas. FWPVs regularly carry an integrated, active copy of the reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV), and it has been hypothesized that such FWPVs are more problematic in the field. Extensive outbreaks are usually observed in tropical and sub-tropical climates, where biting insects are more difficult to control. Here, we report an epidemic of 65 cutaneous fowlpox cases in Austria in layer chickens (91% of the cases) and broiler breeders and turkeys, all of them unvaccinated against the disease, from October 2018 to February 2020. The field data revealed appearance in flocks of different sizes ranging from less than 5000 birds up to more than 20,000 animals, with the majority raised indoors in a barn system. The clinical presentation was characterized by typical epithelial lesions on the head of the affected birds, with an average decrease of 6% in egg production and an average weekly mortality of 1.2% being observed in the flocks. A real-time multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) confirmed the presence of FWPV-REV DNA, not only in the lesions but also in the environmental dust from the poultry houses. The integration of the REV provirus into the FWPV genome was confirmed by PCR, and revealed different FWPV genome populations carrying either the REV long terminal repeats (LTRs) or the full-length REV genome, reiterating the instability of the inserted REV. Two selected samples were fully sequenced by next generation sequencing (NGS), and the whole genome phylogenetic analysis revealed a regional clustering of the FWPV genomes. The extensive nature of these outbreaks in host populations naïve for the virus is a remarkable feature of the present report, highlighting new challenges associated with FWPV infections that need to be considered.

Abstract
In the present study, we report the occurrence of several outbreaks of hepatitis in flocks of young pheasants in France, between 2017 and 2021. The disease was characterized by prostration, apathy and a median cumulative mortality of 12%, with the birds presenting multifocal to coalescing necrotizing hepatitis on necropsy. Severe extensive areas of degeneration and necrosis were observed in the liver, with degenerative hepatocytes presenting large amphophilic to acidophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies. Transmission electron microscopy examination of liver samples showed the presence of parvovirus-like virions of 21-24 nm, a finding already reported decades ago. Further investigations by Next Generation Sequencing and PCR revealed the complete genome of a novel species of parvovirus, here designated Phasianus chaphamaparvovirus 1 (PhChPV-1), that belongs to the new genus Chaphamaparvovirus in the Hamaparvovirinae subfamily. In situ hybridization and real-time PCR confirmed the etiology of the outbreaks, demonstrating the viral genome in the lesions. The findings establish the etiology of a pathology first described in pheasants 50 years ago and pave the way for a targeted protection strategy.

Abstract
Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic is having an unprecedented detrimental impact on mental health in people around the world. It is therefore important to examine factors that may buffer or heighten the risk of mental health problems in this context. Objectives This study explores the buffering effects of different flows of compassion (for self, for others, from others) and the magnifying effects of fears of compassion on the impact of perceived threat of COVID-19 on depression, anxiety and stress, and social safeness. Methods 4057 adult participants collected from the general community population across 21 countries from Europe, Middle East, North America, South America, Asia and Oceania, completed self-report measures of perceived threat of COVID-19, compassion, fears of compassion, depression, anxiety, stress, and social safeness. Results Self-compassion moderated the impact of perceived threat of COVID-19 on depression, anxiety and stress, whereas compassion from others moderated the effects of fears of COVID-19 on social safeness. Fears of compassion moderated the impact of perceived threat of COVID-19 on psychological distress. Only fears of compassion from others moderated the effects of fears of COVID-19 on social safeness. These effects were consistent across countries. Conclusions Our findings highlight the universal protective role of compassion, in particular self-compassion and compassion from others, in promoting resilience by buffering against the harmful effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health and social safeness. Furthermore, our results reveal that fears of compassion have a magnifying effect on the damaging impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health and social safeness. Abstract
Background
Cancer treatment–related cardiotoxicity (CTrCD) is commonly associated with anthracyclines and anti-HER2 agents which are widely used for the treatment of breast cancer. In order to mitgate CTrCD, exercise-based cardio-oncology rehabilitation (COR) involving a structured exercise program has been proposed.
Objectives
To evaluate the impact of a cardiac-rehabilitation program in breast cancer patients submitted to chemotherapy with known cardiotoxicity.
Methods
A systematic review was performed. Two databases were searched, PubMed and SCOPUS. All randomized or controlled trials and other prospective studies published between 2000 and March 2020 which evaluate the impact of an aerobic exercise program on cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), health-related quality of life (QOL), vascular/endothelial function as well as cardiac assessment namely through the evaluation of left ventricular function and cardiac biomarkers in patients undergoing anthracycline and/or anti-HER2 treatments were included.
Main results
Fourteen studies were included enrolling 578 breast cancer patients with a mean age of 48.80 years. Regarding the impact of exercise in CRF, 5 studies (n=176) reported a significant improvement of VO2 max. and 4 studies of VO2max./kg (n=137). The peak power output was also improved in 4 studies (n=95) in the exercise-group. Considering the assessment of QOL, 3 studies (n=180) revealed significant differences favoring the exercise-group. The results regarding the evaluation of the LVEF were not clear: 2 studies (n=48) reported a significant decrease on LVEF when compared to baseline at the end of the intervention in both groups, despite the exercise program. However, 2 studies (n=97) showed a significant increase on LVEF in the exercise-group. Three studies (n=82) did not found significant differences in global longitudinal strain between groups. Limited evidence was found in vascular and endothelial functon. In 2 studies (n=50), endothelial function measured by brachial artery flow-mediated dilatation significantly improved in the exercise-group. Two studies (n=98) reported no significant impact of exercise on atenuating the increase of cTnI and BNP levels in the course of chemotherapy. On the other hand, when considering NT-proBNP, an increase in its levels was attenuated in the exercise-group.
Conclusions
This study confirms that exercise-based COR seems to be an effective approach to improve several cardiovascular outcomes and quality of life in breast cancer patients.

Abstract
The present case is an unusual report of cutaneous fowlpox with an atypical appearance and incidence in broilers. Gross skin lesions were noticed in 41-day-old commercial broilers during the veterinary inspection at a processing plant in the north of Iran. The skin lesions were only observed on feathered skin areas of the broilers and remained unnoticed until slaughter. Round, nodular or coalescent, elongated, reddish-brown proliferative lesions were mainly located on the back, thighs, and proximal areas of the neck of broilers. Nonfeathered skin, including the wattle, comb, eyelids, and legs, were not affected. This condition incurred high losses due to a 5.3% condemnation and trimming of carcasses. Cutaneous lesions were sampled for histopathology and molecular virology for further investigations. Histopathology revealed multifocal necrotic dermatitis with epidermal eosinophilic cytoplasmic inclusion bodies in the skin lesions. Molecular investigations confirmed the presence of fowlpox virus (FWPV) in the proliferative lesions, with further investigations identifying two FWPV genome populations, one carrying a portion of the reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) and the other a nearly complete REV provirus. Furthermore, the 4b core protein gene-based molecular analysis clustered the field virus into clade A of the genus Avipoxvirus.

Abstract
Resveratrol is a photosensitive, bioactive molecule which has received increasing research interest during the past decade for its antioxidant properties. However, it has low solubility in water or common triglyceride oils. Resveratrol solubilization in oil can only be achieved in essential oils, such as flavour oils, but the stability of emulsions produced with this type of oils is low as they are prone to creaming phenomena and Oswald ripening. In this study, resveratrol was first dissolved in orange oil which was mixed into a medium-chain triglyceride (Miglyol) at different ratios and used as the internal phase of oil-in-water emulsions (O/W). The emulsions were stabilized by octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) modified rice starch granules using two different ratios of starch particle:oil to study the influence of interfacial coverage on the final emulsion droplet size and emulsion stability. The results of this study indicated that stable Pickering emulsions could be prepared using OSA-modified rice starch granules even at partial coverage conditions. Emulsions prepared at an oil fraction of 0.5 using 30% v/v mixture of orange oil in Miglyol as the dispersed phase seemed to be an appropriate resveratrol carrier system, obtaining encapsulation efficiency values close to 90% which results in emulsions with a resveratrol concentration of 8.45 mg/L. Hence, the emulsions prepared are suitable for food fortification applications.

Abstract
The present report describes an outbreak of Pullorum disease in a young layer parent stock in Austria. The flock, which comprised 14,220 Lohmann brown layer chickens, experienced high mortality from the first week of life, reaching a total of 1905 chickens in the fifth week, when the flock was depopulated. Clinical signs included uneven size of the chicks, pasty vents, apathy, and diminished water and feed intake, with some birds presenting central nervous system signs such as tremors and torticollis. The postmortem investigation of 43 birds, of ages 1 to 4 weeks, revealed retained yolk sacs filled with caseous exudate, purulent airsacculitis, hepatitis with whitish pinpoint coalescing necrotic foci, splenitis with splenomegaly, hemorrhagic-mucoid enteritis in the small intestine, fibrinous typhlitis, nephromegaly, and urate deposits in the ureters and cloaca. Inflammation and/or necrosis were identified in liver, spleen, kidney, small intestine, and heart by histopathology. However, no histopathologic lesions were observed in the brain. Salmonella enterica was isolated from heart, liver, spleen, and brain in pure culture. Group-specific serotyping determined the presence of group D, with S. enterica subspecies enterica serovar Gallinarum being confirmed based on the Kauffmann-White scheme. A duplex PCR further identified S. enterica subspecies enterica serovar Gallinarum biovar Pullorum as the responsible agent for the outbreak. Subsequently, the grandparent flocks, from which the affected flock originated, were tested and found to be negative for Salmonella Pullorum, with no other progenies from the same grandparents developing disease. Although the source of the pathogen could not be identified, such findings highlight the importance of "old" pathogens such as Salmonella Pullorum causing sudden high mortality in chicks, even in a highly controlled environment.

Abstract
Starch nanoparticles (SNPs) are a promising choice for the strategic development of new renewable and biodegradable nanomaterials for novel biomedical and pharmaceutical applications when loaded with antibiotics or with anticancer agents as target drug delivery systems. The final properties of the SNPs are strongly influenced by the synthesis method and conditions being a controlled and monodispersed size crucial for these applications. The aim of this work was to synthesize controlled size SNPs through nanoprecipitation and microemulsion methods by modifying main operating parameters regarding the effect of amylose and amylopectin ratio in maize starches. SNPs were characterized by size and shape. SNPs from 59 to 118 nm were obtained by the nanoprecipitation method, registering the higer values when surfactant was added to the aqueous phase. Microemulsion method led to 35-147 nm sizes observing a higher particle formation capacity. The composition of the maize used influenced the final particle size and shape.

Abstract
Aluminium (Al) toxicity is the major constraint for crop productivity in acid soils. Wild rye species (Secale spp.) exhibit high Al tolerance, being a good source of genes related to this trait. The Alt1 locus located on the 6RS chromosome arm is one of the four main loci controlling Al tolerance in rye and is known to harbour major genes but, so far, none have been found. Through synteny among the short arm of the rye chromosome 6R and the main grass species, we found a candidate MATE gene for the Atl1 locus, later named ScMATE3, which was isolated and characterized in different Secale species. The sequence comparisons revealed both intraspecific and interspecific variability, with high sequence conservation in the Secale genus. SNP with replacement substitution that changed the structure of the protein and can be involved in the Al tolerance trait were found in ScMATE3 gene. The predicted subcellular localization of ScMATE3 is the vacuolar membrane which, together with the phylogenetic relationships performed with other MATE genes of the Poaceae related to Al detoxification, suggest involvement of ScMATE3 in an internal tolerance mechanism. Moreover, expression studies of this gene in rye corroborate its contribution in some Al resistance mechanisms. The ScMATE3 gene is located on the 6RS chromosome arm between the same markers in which the Alt1 locus is involved in Al resistance mechanisms in rye, thus being a good candidate gene for this function.

Abstract
The Beers Criteria for Potentially Inappropriate Medication (PIM) use is a list of medications with multiple risks in older patients. Approximately 24 per cent use rate is reported in prior studies. Our objective was to determine the local PIM use and subsequent fall risk in geriatric trauma patients. We conducted a retrospective analysis of PIM use in all geriatric patients evaluated at our Level 1 trauma center between 2014 and 2017. Patients were identified from our trauma database. Pre-admission medication use was determined through medication reconciliation from our electronic medical record (EMR). Patients not undergoing medication reconciliation were excluded. After initial analysis, patients were stratified by age into three groups: 65 to 74, 75 to 84, and ≥85 years. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to calculate odds ratios of falls for specific PIMs. In all, 2181 patients met the inclusion criteria. Overall, 71.2 per cent of geriatric trauma patients were prescribed at least one PIM—73.1 per cent of falls compared with 68.6 per cent for other mechanisms. Specific PIM use varied by age group. PIMs associated with fall risk in all patients included antipsychotics, benzodiazepines, and diclofenac. For those aged 65 to 74 years, antihistamines, diclofenac, proton pump inhibitors, and promethazine were associated. In those aged 75 to 84 years, alprazolam, antipsychotics, benzodiazepines, cyclobenzaprine, diclofenac, and muscle relaxants were implicated. No significant associations were found for patients aged ≥85 years. PIM use at our trauma center seems to be rampant and well above the national average. Geriatric falls were associated with using ≥1 PIM and multiple specific PIMs implicated. We are designing a targeted educational program for local primary care physicians (PCPs) that will attempt to decrease geriatric PIM use.

IntroductionThere is evidence suggesting that for some individuals self-generating compassion and being open to compassion from others can be difficult or aversive. To date, however, no study has explored how these fears of compassion are associated with early emotional memories, such as shame or safeness memories, and to symptoms of depression and anxiety in adulthood. The current study set out to investigate the mediator effect of fears of compassion on the relationship between the traumatic and centrality features of shame memories, early memories of warmth and safeness, and symptoms of depression and anxiety.MethodIn this cross-sectional study, participants were 302 individuals (171 women; age M = 36.28; SD = 11.45) recruited from the general community population, who completed self-report measures of fears of compassion (for self, for others and from others), shame memories, safeness memories, depression and anxiety.ResultsPath analysis showed that fears of compassion for self and of receiving compassion from others mediated the effects of shame traumatic memory, centrality of shame memory and early memories of warmth and safeness on depressive and anxiety symptoms. Fear of compassion for self was the best predictor of depression and anxiety.ConclusionsFears of compassion may render an individual more vulnerable to defeat and threat responses when faced with stressful life events, which can manifest as symptoms of depression or anxiety. Abstract
As part of the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Physics Section, the Nuclear Science and Instrumentation Laboratory (NSIL) helps Member States (MSs) to establish, operate and maintain various nuclear instrumentation and spectrometry techniques in support of a wide range of applications such as health care, food, agriculture, environment, forensics, cultural heritage, and materials science. NSIL is contributing to capacity building, transfer of knowledge and expertise sharing, including the development of instruments and validation of analytical methodologies. This paper describes NSIL's key activities and provides an overview of the recent developments and achievements, including the commissioning and utilization of an end-station at one of the beam lines in Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste (EST, Italy), the upgrade of an ultralight radiation monitoring system onboarded on a drone, as well as the development of a full field X-ray fluorescence analytical system for forensic applications and characterization of valuable art/archaeological objects.

Objective
Accurate diagnosis of neuropsychological (NP) impairment in Spanish-speaking Latinx women is limited by a lack of appropriate norms. While multiple normative datasets have emerged for Mexican/Mexican-American populations, there is a particular dearth of normative options for Puerto Rican women. This study collected normative data in a sample of Spanish-speaking healthy women in Puerto Rico (PR).
Participants and Method
The sample consisted of 63 healthy, HIV-seronegative women recruited as comparison participants in a longitudinal HIV-seropositive Latinx Women Cohort study at the University of Puerto Rico during 2002-2017. The NP battery included measures from seven cognitive domains: verbal fluency, executive functioning, processing speed, learning, memory, sensory, perceptual, and motor skills.
Results
The sample’s age ranged from 20-77 years (M = 42.14; SD = 12.71) and education ranged from 9-18 years (M = 13.74; SD = 2.09). The NP test M and SD raw score results were: Trail Making A (M = 41.29; SD = 14.87), Trail Making B (M = 105.14; SD = 49.77), Grooved Pegs Dominant Hand (M = 78.49; SD = 31.91), Stroop Word/Color (M = 47.86; SD = 23.66), Rey Verbal Learning Test Total (M = 42.0; SD = 9.36), Verbal Fluency FAS-F (M = 11.27; SD = 4.20), FAS-A (M = 12.05; SD=4.34), FAS-S (M = 10.67; SD = 4.19), Digit Span (M = 12.16; SD = 3.28), Spatial Span (M = 10.95; SD = 3.62), Benton Judgment of Line Orientation Test (M = 18.10; SD = 5.54), Finger Tapping Left (M = 50.58; SD = 7.78), Finger Tapping Right (M = 53.87; SD = 8.83), Seashore Rhythm Test (M = 23.38; SD = 3.99), and Rey Complex Figure Test Immediate (M = 13.17; SD = 6.99) and Delay (M = 13.58; SD = 7.21). The NP norms were stratified by age (10-year increments and 60+) and education (< 12 years and 12+ years).
Conclusions
This preliminary study provides initial normative data from a sample of healthy women living in PR, which can improve NP diagnostic accuracy for this population. This is particularly important given that this population experiences worse health outcomes compared to other Latinx subpopulations.

Abstract
Trauma recidivists are a high-risk patient population. The effects of recidivism on Geriatric trauma mortality have not been investigated. Our hypothesis is that trauma recidivism is associated with high postdischarge mortality after the initial index admission in both the geriatric and adult trauma populations. The trauma registry of our Level I trauma center was queried for patients evaluated between 2008 and 2012. Patients were stratified adult (18-64) and geriatric (≥65) groups and matched with mortality data from the National Death Index. Unique patients were identified and recidivists flagged. Statistical analysis was performed based on characteristics from the index admission using nonparametric tests, and Kaplan-Meier curves were plotted to examine postdischarge mortality after index admission for recidivists. A total of 8716 records met inclusion criteria; 800 recidivist records were identified representing 369 unique patients. Recidivists presented between 2 and 7 times. Recidivists were more likely to be male, required ICU admission and mechanical ventilation, had a longer median length of stay, were less likely to discharge home, and had a higher postdischarge mortality. Stratifying into adult and geriatric groups demonstrated significant differences in injury severity, injury patterns, length of stay, race, gender, mechanism, and postdischarge mortality. Recidivists demonstrated a higher postdischarge mortality in both groups with the geriatric group approaching 46 per cent. Trauma recidivists represent an at-risk group with significantly higher postdischarge mortality. Group characteristics differ significantly between the adult and geriatric recidivist populations. Further research is needed to identify modifiable risk factors in these populations to minimize risks of morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
Small granular starches from rice, quinoa, and amaranth were modified with octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) at 5 defined intervals (0-3.0%) and investigated with respect to emulsifying capacity and stability. Starch granule surfaces were characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller and contact angle measurements. Emulsifying capacity was characterized by multiple light scattering (MLS) and particle size analysis. Stability towards environmental stress was characterized by centrifugation and MLS. Surface hydrophobicity and emulsifying capacity correlated with starch type and modification level. Quinoa stabilized emulsions had the smallest droplet size (e.g. 59.2 μm at 3.0% OSA) and superior stability, both before and after centrifugation, especially at the lowest modification levels. Rice and amaranth had larger droplets (99.8 and 84.1 μm at 3.0% OSA respectively). Amaranth, despite its small size showed poorer performance than quinoa, especially at lower modification levels. The higher emulsifying efficiency of quinoa starch granules attributed to the higher protein content.

Abstract
The stand-alone pathogenicity of fowl adenoviruses (FAdVs) had long been disputed, given the ubiquity of the viruses versus sporadic outbreaks, and variation between experimental studies. However, a globally emerging trend of FAdV-associated diseases has marked the past two decades, with hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome mainly in Asia besides Arabian and Latin American countries, and geographically more disseminated outbreaks of inclusion body hepatitis. Finally, the appearance of FAdV-induced gizzard erosion (AGE) in Asia and Europe completed the range of diseases. Epidemiological studies confirmed serotype FAdV-4 as agent of hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome, whereas inclusion body hepatitis is related to FAdV-2, -8a, -8b and -11. Members of the biologically more distant serotype FAdV-1 induce AGE. Urged by increasing problems in the field, numerous pathogenicity studies with FAdVs from outbreaks substantiated the primary aetiologic role of particular strains for distinct clinical conditions. Developments in the poultry industry towards highly specialized genetic breeds and rigorous biosecurity additionally contribute to the growing incidence of FAdV-related diseases. Confirming field observations, recent studies connected a higher susceptibility of broilers with their distinct physiology, implying the choice of bird type as a factor to be considered in infection studies. Furthermore, elevated biosecurity standards have generated immunologically naïve breeding stocks, putting broilers at risk in face of vertical FAdV transmission. Therefore, future prevention strategies should include adequate antibodies in breeders prior to production and - if necessary - vaccination, in order to protect progenies. This review aims to deliver a detailed overview on the current global situation about FAdV-induced diseases, their reproduction in vivo and vaccination strategies.

Abstract
Small granular starches from rice, quinoa and amaranth were hydrophobized by esterification with octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) in an aqueous alkaline slurry to obtain series of modified starches at defined intervals (i.e. 0.6, 1.2, 1.8, 2.4, 3.0%). The physical and the physico-chemical properties of the starch particles were characterized by proximate analysis including protein level, amylose level and dry matter. The shape and size of the starch granules were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and light scattering. The gelatinization properties were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry. The degree of modification was determined by titration with NaOH. With regard to the emulsion formulation and in order to assess the emulsifying capacity of the small granular starches, the effect of starch type, degree of modification and starch concentration on the resulting emulsion droplet size were evaluated by light scattering and optical microscopy. Emulsifying properties were found to depend on the degree of substitution, size of the granules and the starch to oil ratio of the formulation. Quinoa starch granules, in general, had the best emulsifying capacity followed by amaranth and rice. However, in higher starch concentrations (>400mg/mL oil) and adequate levels of OSA (3.0%) amaranth performed best, having the smallest size of starches studied.

Abstract
IntroductionCompassion can be defined as an intentional sensitivity to the suffering, with a motivation and commitment to try to relieve it, which can have a positive impact on individuals’ emotional and psychological well-being. The relevance of compassion focused therapies is well established and this makes the development of reliable instruments for the assessment of the different facets of compassion targeting different age groups crucial for research and clinical practice. The Compassionate Attributes and Actions Scale (CAAS) aims to assess compassion on three directions: self-compassion, compassion for others or compassion received from others. Each of the scales assesses one's compassionate attributes and compassionate actions separately when dealing with difficult or painful situations.Objective/aimThis study aimed to adapt the CAAS for adolescents and to explore its factor structure and psychometric properties in a sample of Portuguese adolescents.MethodsA total of 336 Portuguese adolescents with ages ranging from 12 to 19 years old participated in the study. Several exploratory factor analyses were conducted.ResultsExploratory factor analysis showed that, except for the attributes section of the self-compassion scale (that showed to be bi-factorial), all the other scales (and their sections) presented a single-factor structure. The three scales, and its sections, demonstrated a good reliability and excellent test-retest reliability and good convergent and discriminant validity.ConclusionResults were in line with the factor structure found in the adults’ version. Abstract
IntroductionCompassion and self-compassion can be protective factors against mental health difficulties, in particular depression. The cultivation of the compassionate self, associated with a range of practices such as slow and deeper breathing, compassionate voice tones and facial expressions, and compassionate focusing, is central to compassion focused therapy (Gilbert, 2010). However, no study has examined the processes of change that mediate the impact of compassionate self-cultivation practices on depressive symptoms.AimsThe aim of this study is to investigate the impact of a brief compassionate self training (CST) intervention on depressive symptoms, and explore the psychological processes that mediate the change at post intervention.MethodsUsing a longitudinal design, participants (general population and college students) were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: Compassionate self training (n = 56) and wait-list control (n = 37). Participants in the CST condition were instructed to practice CST exercises for 15 minutes everyday or in moments of stress during two weeks. Self-report measures of depression, self-criticism, shame and compassion, were completed at pre and post in both conditions.ResultsResults showed that, at post-intervention, participants in the CST condition decreased depression, self-criticism and shame, and increased self-compassion and openness to receive compassion from others. Abstract
Soil and water contamination by lead (Pb) remains a topic of great concern, particularly regarding crop production. The admissible Pb values in irrigation water in several countries range from ≈0.1 to ≈5 mg L-1. In order to evaluate putative effects of Pb within legal doses on crops growth, we exposed Lactuca sativa seeds and seedlings to increasing doses of Pb(NO3)2 up to 20 mg L-1. The OECD parameter seed germination and seedling/plant growth were not affected by any of the Pb-concentrations used. However, for doses higher than 5 mg L-1 significant DNA damage was detected: Comet assay detected DNA fragmentation at ≥ 5 mg L-1 and presence of micronuclei (MN) were detected for 20 mg L-1. Also, cell cycle impairment was observed for doses as low as 0.05 mg L-1 and 0.5 mg L-1 (mostly G2 arrest). Our data show that for the low doses of Pb used, the OECD endpoints were not able to detect toxicity, while more sensitive endpoints (related with DNA damage and mitotic/interphase disorders) identified genotoxic and cytostatic effects. Furthermore, the nature of the genotoxic effect was dependent on the concentration. Finally, we recommend that MN test and the comet assay should be included as sensitive endpoints in (eco)toxicological assays.

Abstract
In the present study, inclusion body hepatitis (IBH) was experimentally induced by oral inoculation of two groups of specific pathogen-free (SPF) broilers and two groups of SPF layers at day-old with either a fowl aviadenovirus (FAdV)-D or a FAdV-E strain. A substantial variation in the degree of susceptibility was observed with mortalities of 100 and 96% in the FAdV-E and D infected SPF broiler groups, respectively, whereas in the groups of infected SPF layers mortalities of only 20 and 8% were noticed. Significant changes in clinical chemistry analytes of all infected birds together with histopathological lesions indicated impairment of liver and pancreas integrity and functions. Furthermore, significantly lower blood glucose concentrations were recorded at peak of infection in both inoculated SPF broiler groups, in comparison to the control group, corresponding to a hypoglycaemic status. High viral loads were determined in liver and pancreas of SPF broilers already at 4 days post-infection (dpi), in comparison to SPF layers, indicating a somewhat faster viral replication in the target organs. Overall, highest values were noticed in the pancreas of SPF broilers independent of the virus used for infection. The actual study provides new insights into the pathogenesis of IBH, a disease evolving to a metabolic disorder, to which SPF broilers were highly susceptible. Hence, this is the first study to report a significant higher susceptibility of SPF broiler chickens to experimentally induced IBH in direct comparison to SPF layers.

Abstract
There is considerable evidence for an adaptive role of inversions, but how their genetic content evolves and affects the subsequent evolution of chromosomal polymorphism remains controversial. Here, we track how life-history traits, chromosomal arrangements and 22 microsatellites, within and outside inversions, change in three replicated populations of Drosophila subobscura for 30 generations of laboratory evolution since founding from the wild. The dynamics of fitness-related traits indicated adaptation to the new environment concomitant with directional evolution of chromosomal polymorphism. Evidence of selective changes in frequency of inversions was obtained for seven of 23 chromosomal arrangements, corroborating a role for inversions in adaptation. The evolution of linkage disequilibrium between some microsatellites and chromosomes suggested that adaptive changes in arrangements involved changes in their genetic content. Several microsatellite alleles increased in frequency more than expected by drift in targeted inversions in all replicate populations. In particular, there were signs of selection in the O3+4 arrangement favouring a combination of alleles in two loci linked to the inversion and changing along with it, although the lack of linkage disequilibrium between these loci precludes epistatic selection. Seven other alleles increased in frequency within inversions more than expected by drift, but were not in linkage disequilibrium with them. Possibly these alleles were hitchhiking along with alleles under selection that were not specific to those inversions. Overall, the selection detected on the genetic content of inversions, despite limited coverage of the genome, suggests that genetic changes within inversions play an important role in adaptation.

Abstract
Several studies have demonstrated that wildlife reservoirs of mycobacteria are responsible for the maintenance and spreading of the infection to livestock and wildlife counterparts. Recent data report the role of wild boar (Sus scrofa) as a reservoir for Mycobacterium bovis. This study was conducted to evaluate the chronic inflammatory response in the mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) of wild boar with granulomatous lymphadenitis (n=30). Morphological parameters of the lesions were recorded. The expression of CD3 and CD79α molecules was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Molecular genotyping and culture to identify mycobacteria were performed. The lesions consisted mainly of stage III and stage IV granulomas. CD3 and CD79α positive cells were observed in 15 (50%) and in 11 (36.6%) MLN, respectively. In these lesions, higher percentages of T lymphocytes were found and a limited number of animals exhibited a tendency for an increased percentage of B lymphocytes. Our results suggest that there are similar percentages and distribution patterns of CD3 and CD79α in the lesions, regardless of the presence of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map), M. bovis or Map-M. bovis co-infection, and confirm that wild boar is both susceptible and could be an important Map and M. bovis wild reservoir in the study area.

Abstract
Clinal variation is one of the most emblematic examples of the action of natural selection at a wide geographical range. In Drosophila subobscura, parallel clines in body size and inversions, but not in wing shape, were found in Europe and South and North America. Previous work has shown that a bottleneck effect might be largely responsible for differences in wing trait-inversion association between one European and one South American population. One question still unaddressed is whether the associations found before are present across other populations of the European and South American clines. Another open question is whether evolutionary dynamics in a new environment can lead to relevant changes in wing traits-inversion association. To analyse geographical variation in these associations, we characterized three recently laboratory founded D. subobscura populations from both the European and South American latitudinal clines. To address temporal variation, we also characterized the association at a later generation in the European populations. We found that wing size and shape associations can be generalized across populations of the same continent, but may change through time for wing size. The observed temporal changes are probably due to changes in the genetic content of inversions, derived from adaptation to the new, laboratory environment. Finally, we show that it is not possible to predict clinal variation from intrapopulation associations. All in all this suggests that, at least in the present, wing traits-inversion associations are not responsible for the maintenance of the latitudinal clines in wing shape and size.

Abstract
The Galactic 1.809-MeV γ-ray signature from the β decay of ^{26g}Al is a dominant target of γ-ray astronomy, of which a significant component is understood to originate from massive stars. The ^{26g}Al(p,γ)^{27}Si reaction is a major destruction pathway for ^{26g}Al at stellar temperatures, but the reaction rate is poorly constrained due to uncertainties in the strengths of low-lying resonances in ^{27}Si. The ^{26g}Al(d,p)^{27}Al reaction has been employed in inverse kinematics to determine the spectroscopic factors, and hence resonance strengths, of proton resonances in ^{27}Si via mirror symmetry. The strength of the 127-keV resonance is found to be a factor of 4 higher than the previously adopted upper limit, and the upper limit for the 68-keV resonance has been reduced by an order of magnitude, considerably constraining the ^{26g}Al destruction rate at stellar temperatures.

Abstract
Non–invasive approaches are increasingly investigated and applied in studies of small mammal assemblages because they are more cost–effective and bypass conservation and animal welfare issues. However, pellets of diurnal raptors have rarely been used for these purposes. We evaluated the potential of marsh harrier pellets (Circus aeruginosus) as a non–invasive method to sample small mammal assemblages, by comparing the results with those of sampling using Sherman live–traps and pitfalls. The three methods were applied simultaneously in an agricultural–wetland complex in NW Portugal. Estimates of species richness, diversity, evenness, abundance, and proportion of each species within the assemblage showed significant differences between the three methods. Our results suggest that the use of marsh harrier pellets is more effective in inventorying small mammal species than either of the two kinds of traps, while also avoiding any involuntary fatalities associated with the sampling of small non–volant mammals. Moreover, the analysis of pellets was the most cost–effective method. Comparison of the two trapping methodologies showed involuntary fatalities were higher in pitfalls than in Sherman traps. We discuss the advantages and flaws of the three methods, both from technical and conservational perspectives.

Abstract
A survey to determine the prevalence of Mycobacterium bovis in wild mammals in Portugal was conducted by testing samples from hunted animals and those found dead between 2009 and 2013. In this study, we investigated 2116 wild mammals. Post-mortem examinations were performed, and tissues were collected from wild mammals representing 8 families and 11 different species, with a total of 393 animals analysed. Cultures were performed, and acid-fast isolates were identified by PCR. Tissues were also screened for Mycobacterium bovis by directly extracting DNA and testing for the Mycobacterium bovis-specific sequences. Mycobacterium bovis prevalence was 26.9% (95% CI: 22.8-31.5%). Mycobacterium bovis was recorded in 106 of the 393 studied species: prevalence by species were 26.9% (95% CI: 16.8-40.2%) in red foxes, 20.0% (95% CI: 7.0-45.2%) in Egyptian mongooses, 21.4% (95% CI: 16.2-27.7%) in wild boar and 38.3% (95% CI: 29.9-47.4%) in red deer. Mycobacterium bovis infection was detected in six of eight taxonomic families. For some species, the small sample sizes obtained were a reflection of their restricted range and low abundance, making estimates of infection prevalence very difficult (1 beech marten of 4; 1 Eurasian otter of 3; 2 common genet of 3). Infection was not detected in European badgers, hedgehog, wild rabbits and hare. The results of this study confirm the presence of Mycobacterium bovis infection in wild carnivores in Portugal.

Abstract
Chromosomal inversions are present in a wide range of animals and plants, having an important role in adaptation and speciation. Although empirical evidence of their adaptive value is abundant, the role of different processes underlying evolution of chromosomal polymorphisms is not fully understood. History and selection are likely to shape inversion polymorphism variation to an extent yet largely unknown. Here, we perform a real-time evolution study addressing the role of historical constraints and selection in the evolution of these polymorphisms. We founded laboratory populations of Drosophila subobscura derived from three locations along the European cline and followed the evolutionary dynamics of inversion polymorphisms throughout the first 40 generations. At the beginning, populations were highly differentiated and remained so throughout generations. We report evidence of positive selection for some inversions, variable between foundations. Signs of negative selection were more frequent, in particular for most cold-climate standard inversions across the three foundations. We found that previously observed convergence at the phenotypic level in these populations was not associated with convergence in inversion frequencies. In conclusion, our study shows that selection has shaped the evolutionary dynamics of inversion frequencies, but doing so within the constraints imposed by previous history. Both history and selection are therefore fundamental to predict the evolutionary potential of different populations to respond to global environmental changes.

Abstract
An approach is presented to experimentally constrain previously unreachable (p, γ) reaction rates on nuclei far from stability in the astrophysical rp process. Energies of all critical resonances in the (57)Cu(p,γ)(58)Zn reaction are deduced by populating states in (58)Zn with a (d, n) reaction in inverse kinematics at 75 MeV/u, and detecting γ-ray-recoil coincidences with the state-of-the-art γ-ray tracking array GRETINA and the S800 spectrograph at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The results reduce the uncertainty in the (57)Cu(p,γ) reaction rate by several orders of magnitude. The effective lifetime of (56)Ni, an important waiting point in the rp process in x-ray bursts, can now be determined entirely from experimentally constrained reaction rates.
