Source specific sedimentary response towards the differential anthropogenic impacts in terms of potentially toxic elements in an urban river

To investigate the interplay between varying anthropogenic activities and sediment dynamics in an urban river (Turag, Bangladesh), this study involved 37-sediment samples from 11 different sections of the river. Neutron activation analysis and atomic absorption spectrometry were utilized to quantify the concentrations of 14 metal(oid)s (Al, Ti, Co, Fe, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn). This study revealed significant toxic metal trends, with Principal coordinate analysis explaining 62.91 % of the variance from upstream to downstream. The largest RSDs for Zn(287 %), Mn(120 %), and Cd(323 %) implies an irregular regional distribution throughout the river. The UNMIX-model and PMF-model were utilized to identify potential sources of metal(oid)s in sediments. ∼63.65-66.7 % of metal(oid)s in sediments originated from anthropogenic sources, while remaining attributed to natural sources in both models. Strikingly, all measured metal(oid)s' concentrations surpassed the threshold effect level, with Zn and Ni exceeding probable effect levels when compared to SQGs.

Uncovering the impact of mega-scale shipbreaking yards on soil and crop quality in Bangladesh: A spatiotemporal dynamics and associated health risks of metal/loid contamination

The uncontrolled release of harmful metal/loids from mega-scale shipbreaking activities in Bangladesh is a significant concern. This study investigated the impact of shipbreaking activities on soil and crop quality and human health in relation to metal/loid contamination. This work covered an area of 1221 km2 surrounding the shipbreaking yards in Chittagong during the wet and dry seasons between 2019 and 2020. Amongst the sixteen elements measured, the concentrations of Pb, Cd, As, V, Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Sn in the soil, rice, and vegetables from the four exposure sites were significantly higher compared to the control site in both seasons. Soil pollution indices indicated moderate to higher contamination levels of Pb, Zn, Cd, As, and Se in 30-50% of soil, supporting their accumulation in food crops. Source apportionment analysis identified uncontrolled shipwrecking operations as the primary anthropogenic activity mainly contributing to metal/loid pollution. Health risk analysis showed inorganic arsenic (estimated), Cd, and Pb in food crops could pose potential health threats to the general population. Spinach leaf and gourd were identified as the highest-risk contributing vegetables in the dry and wet seasons. These findings help to inform management strategies to protect agroecosystems and public health.

Receptor model-based source tracing and risk assessment of elements in sediment of a transboundary Himalayan River

This study utilized surface sediments from a potentially less polluted transboundary Himalayan River (Brahmaputra: China-India-Bangladesh) to investigate the abundance of 15 geochemically and ecologically significant elements and to predict their sources and ecological consequences. INAA was applied to determine the elemental concentrations. The average abundances (μg.g-1) of Rb (94.20), Cs (4.49), Th (20.31), & U (2.73) were 1.12-2.26 folds elevated than shale. Environmental indices disclosed a pollution status ranging from "uncontaminated to moderately contaminated," with minimal Rb, U, and Th enrichment in the downstream zone. Consensus-based sediment quality guideline (SQG) threshold values suggested that only Cr (60% samples > TEL) may impose rare biological effects. Ecological risk indices suggested "minor to no" possible eco-toxicological risks for the accounted elements (Cr, Co, Mn, Zn, Sb, & As). The positive matrix factorization (PMF) model predicated the predominance of geogenic or crustal contributions (∼72.69%) for Al, K, Na, Ti, Co, Zn, Ba, Cs, As, Rb, Th, & U derived from elemental fractionations, mineral weathering, and bio-geo-chemical mobilization. The relative contributions of anthropogenic sources (∼27.31%; such as the construction of roads, settlement expansion, litter disposal, municipal waste discharge, mining activities, agricultural encroachment, etc.) on elemental distribution were significantly lower. The abundance of Cr and Mn was mainly influenced by anthropogenic sources. This study demonstrated the effectiveness of utilizing geo-environmental guidelines and receptor models in discriminating the natural & anthropogenic origins of metals in the complex riverine sediments of a less anthropogenically affected river.

Ecological engineering of iron ore tailings into useable soils for sustainable rehabilitation

Ecological engineering of soil formation in tailings is an emerging technology toward sustainable rehabilitation of iron (Fe) ore tailings landscapes worldwide, which requires the formation of well-organized and stable soil aggregates in finely textured tailings. Here, we demonstrate an approach using microbial and rhizosphere processes to progressively drive aggregate formation and development in Fe ore tailings. The aggregates were initially formed through the agglomeration of mineral particles by organic cements derived from microbial decomposition of exogenous organic matter. The aggregate stability was consolidated by colloidal nanosized Fe(III)-Si minerals formed during Fe-bearing primary mineral weathering driven by rhizosphere biogeochemical processes of pioneer plants. From these findings, we proposed a conceptual model for progressive aggregate structure development in the tailings with Fe(III)-Si rich cements as core nuclei. This renewable resource dependent eco-engineering approach opens a sustainable pathway to achieve resilient tailings rehabilitation without resorting to excavating natural soil resources.

Indexical and statistical approaches to investigate the integrated origins of elements in the sediment of Teesta River, Bangladesh: sediment quality and ecological risk assessment

This study investigates ecological consequences from the combined provenance (natural and manmade) of fifteen metal(oid)s (Na, Al, K, Ti, Cr, Mn, Co, Zn, As, Rb, Sb, Cs, Ba, Th, and U) from a major Indo-Bangla transboundary river (Teesta). Instrumental neutron activation analysis has been performed to calculate the elemental concentration for a total of thirty sediment samples which accumulated from the upper, middle and downstream section of the Teesta River. In comparison with the crustal origin Rb, Th, and U were 1.5-2.8 times elevated. Elements from upstream and midstream sediments showed greater spatial variability than those from downstream sediments in terms of Na, Rb, Sb, Th, and U. Statistical approaches suggested the dominance of geogenic sources (Na, K, Al, Ti, Co, and Ba) of elements over anthropogenic sources (Cr and Zn). Alkali feldspar and aluminosilicates release lithophilic minerals into the sediments under the redox condition (U/Th = 0.18). Site-specific ecotoxicological indices advocated that some specific locations are highly hazardous relative to Cr and Zn. From SQG-based guidelines, Cr showed higher potential toxicity in some upstream locations relative to Zn, Mn, and As. In order to attain the knowledge limitation of northern transboundary rivers from Bangladesh, this study of origin and relative environmental impact will be beneficial for policy makers.

Mineral weathering of iron ore tailings primed by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and elemental sulfur under contrasting pH conditions

The acidophilic sulfur oxidizing bacterium (SOB), Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, has been found to stimulate elemental sulfur (S⁰) oxidation and mineral weathering in alkaline Fe ore tailings. However, A. ferrooxidans growth and activities depend on the pH conditions surrounding their interfaces with minerals. The present study aimed to investigate how pH influences bacterial growth and functions in Fe ore tailings. A simulated aquatic 'homogeneous' incubation system was initially adjusted into acidic (pH 4), neutral (pH 7) and alkaline (pH 9) conditions, which mimicked the microenvironmental conditions of the water-cell-mineral interfaces in the tailings. It was found that A. ferrooxidans grew well and oxidised S⁰ under the prevailing and initially acidic conditions (pH < 6). These stimulated the weathering of biotite and amphibole-like minerals and the formation of nanosized jarosite and ferrihydrite-like minerals mediated by extracellular polymer substrate (EPS). In contrast, the initially neutral/alkaline pH conditions (i.e., pH > 7) with the presence of the alkaline tailings restricted SOB growth and functions in S⁰-oxidation and mineral weathering. These findings suggest that it is essential to prime acidic conditions in microenvironments to support SOB growth, activities, and functions toward mineral weathering in tailings, providing critical basis for involving SOB in eco-engineered pedogenesis in tailings.

Effects of shipwrecks on spatiotemporal dynamics of metal/loids in sediments and seafood safety in the Bay of Bengal

Metal/loid pollution from shipwrecking activities has drawn significant concern due to their persistent threat to the marine ecosystem and human health. We investigated the spatiotemporal distribution, pollution characteristics, risks, sources, and potential impact of metal/loids in the sediments and seafood in the Bay of Bengal at nearby open beaching shipwrecking yards in Bangladesh. We collected 78 sediments and 208 seafood samples from the exposed and control sites from 2018 to 2020 during the dry and wet seasons. The concentrations of 16 elements, including cadmium, arsenic, lead, chromium, manganese, copper, zinc, iron, tin, antimony, nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, vanadium, selenium, and thallium were measured using validated inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) methods. Based on the pollution indices (enrichment factor, geoaccumulation index, pollution index, and pollution load index), lead, arsenic, cadmium, selenium, copper, zinc, and tin from the dry season showed higher contaminations compared to the wet and their concentrations were increased from 2018 to 2020 with seasonal fluctuations. Sediment cadmium and arsenic posed relatively higher and moderate ecological risks. Health risk analysis indicated that lead, cadmium, and inorganic arsenic (estimated) in seafood species pose a possible health threat to the general population. Further, there were possible ecological and health risks for the metal/loids in combination based on the ecological risk index in sediment and the hazard index in seafood, respectively. Source apportionment suggested that anthropogenic activities through uncontrolled shipwrecking operations over the last four decades were the largest polluting dominator, contributing 55-77% of the metal/loid concentrations. Therefore, the data may inform mitigation strategies for emission control at the shipwrecking yards to protect marine ecosystems and their local population.

Distribution and source apportionment of toxic and trace elements in some benthic and pelagic coastal fish species in Karnaphuli River Estuary, Bangladesh: Risk to human health

The Karnaphuli River is one of the prime and most important streams in the southeastern part of Bangladesh. The favorable water current and the geographic location have rendered the Karnaphuly River estuary a suitable habitat and a breeding ground for diverse fish species. Reversely, this estuary has been polluted by discharges from many point and non-point sources due to its location in the catchment area of a heavily industrialized area, Chattagram port city. However, published research concerning the status of toxic and trace elements in some commercially important benthic and pelagic coastal fish species in Karnaphuli River estuary was not found in the existing literature. Therefore, it's an important field of study on the assessment of toxic and trace elements concentration in the commercially important benthic and pelagic coastal fish species and their health taxation in the Karnaphuli River Estuary. Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) was used to quantify trace metal concentration in edible parts of the fish species. This study revealed that the rank of the trace metals concentration was as follows (mg/kg): Zn (37.1) > Mn (16.12) > V (11.16) > Cu (9.49) > Rb (5.62) > Pb (2.98) > Cr (1.59) > Co (1.17). The F-test showed that a significant difference at 95 % confidence level in the distribution pattern of trace metals concentration among the examined fish species in the study area. The metal pollution index (MPI) in the muscle of fishes were found to be in the following order: L. bata > P. monodon > T. cirratus > M. bleekeri > O. pabda > H. nehereus > L. calcarifer > P. argenteus > P. paradiseus > T. toli, and the MPIs for most of the benthic fish species were higher compared to the pelagic fishes. On the other hand, the examined fish species were significantly bio-accumulative with the highest bio-accumulation factor value for benthic species. The multivariate analysis identified that the sources of the trace metals were associated with anthropogenic activities. For the human health risk assessment concern, estimated daily intake, target hazard quotient and cancer-causing risk were estimated. The results for non-cancer hazardous index values were found to be lower than unity. On the other hand, the total cancer risk data ranging from 1.24E-05 to 1.70E-05 were fallen within the range for the threshold values (1.0E-06 to 1.0E-04). However, considering the suggested values set by the environmental and regulatory agencies, it has been recommended that no significant non-carcinogenic and cancer-causing health risk for humans was seen due to the consumption of the studied fish species.

Co-solidification of bauxite residue and coal ash into indurated monolith via ambient geopolymerisation for in situ environmental application

Bauxite residues generated from alumina refineries worldwide have accumulated to more than 4 billion tons, at an annual increment of ~ 0.15 billion tons. It is imperative and urgent for the alumina sector to develop field-operable disposal solutions for rapid and cost-effective stabilisation of alkaline bauxite residues (BR) in the storage facility to minimise/prevent potential environmental risks. Taking advantage of the availability of coal ash (CA) on site, we studied a feasible way to synthesise geopolymer from active (amorphous) aluminosilicate components of BR and CA via the alkaline hydrolysis under ambient conditions. The new geopolymeric binder effectively solidifies BR-CA mixtures into indurated monoliths whose unconstrained compressive strength (UCS) can reach as high as ~ 20 MPa after 8 weeks. The Full Factorial Experimental Design was used to study relative influences of BR:CA ratio, modulus of activating solution, and H₂O/Na₂O ratio on UCS. Micro-spectroscopic structural analyses using electron-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy suggested a co-occurrence of cement-like calcium aluminosilicate hydrate (C-A-S-H) and Na-rich aluminosilicate 3D-extended network (geopolymer) within the binder phase. The advantage of this ambient geopolymerisation, without resorting to elevated temperature curing, renders a feasible way of valorising BR and CA for environmental management of alkaline wastes at alumina refineries.

Coupling of redundancy analysis with geochemistry and mineralogy to assess the behavior of dust arsenic as a base of risk estimation in Dhaka, Bangladesh

Exposure to dust particles enriched with arsenic (As) is a significant health threat for populations living in Southeast Asian megacities. The mineralogical composition of dust particles is the key factor that controls the retention and release of As. This study investigated the degree of metal(oid)s pollution (As, Ca, Fe, K, Ga, Rb, Sr, Ti, V, Y, and Zr) in road dust of Dhaka city, Bangladesh. Enrichment factor and geoaccumulation index suggested that the road dust was heavily enriched with As, which triggers a comprehensive investigation of its controlling mechanisms and potential health risks by combining physicochemical and mineralogical information with multivariate analysis and a simulated probabilistic risk estimation model. Alkaline road dust (pH_1:5 ranges from 8.02 to 10.34) in Dhaka city was found to have significant enrichment of As. Dust alkalinity was possibly controlled by the presence of carbonate minerals, such as calcite. Quartz was identified as the dominant mineral phase followed by magnesium carbon arsenide (MgCAs₂). Carbonate mineral driven alkaline pH conditions in road dust would potentially trigger the release and mobilization of As to the environment. However, organic complexation can stabilize As on particle surfaces. Monte Carlo simulation-based health risk forecast suggested that the probability of As associated cancer risk has greatly exceeded the threshold value of 1E-4 for adults and children, and children are more vulnerable than adults. According to sensitivity analysis, the concentration of As and exposure duration (ED) posed the most significant impact (>58%) on risk estimation.

Depth-related dynamics of physicochemical characteristics and heavy metal accumulation in mangrove sediment and plant: Acanthus ilicifolius as a potential phytoextractor

The focus of this study was to determine the depth-wise variability of physicochemical properties (i.e., pH, TOC, TN, and EC), and heavy metals (i.e., Pb, Cu, Zn, As, and Cr) concentration, and the associated biological and ecological risks of the mangrove sediment. The accumulation of metal contents and the phytoremediation and phytoextraction were also investigated in a mangrove species, Acanthus ilicifolius. The mangrove sediment consists of a higher proportion of sand fraction (56.6-74.7%) followed by clay (10-28%) and silt (10.1-15. 7%) fractions. The concentrations (mg/kg) of Pb, Cu, Zn, As, and Cr were ranged from 22.05-34.3, 8.58-22.77, 85.07-114, 5.56-12.91, and 0.98-5.12 in all the sediment layers. The hierarchy of the mean metal concentration in sediment was Zn (102 mg/kg) > Pb (25.6 mg/kg) > Cu (14.8 mg/kg) > As (8.79 mg/kg) > Cr (2.74 mg/kg) respectively. The examined metal concentrations were below the respective average shale values (ASVs). The degree of environmental, ecological, and biological risks was minimal according to various pollution indices like geoaccumulation index (I_geo), contamination factor (CF), and pollution load index (PLI). According to sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), the adverse biological risk effect was not likely to occur. The result of the potential ecological risk index (PERI) demonstrated that the study area was in the low-risk condition as the corresponded RI value < 100. A combined influence of geogenic and anthropogenic factors was identified as the metal sources by multivariate analysis. The study found that the accumulation rate of the metal contents was higher in leaves than that of roots. The mean descending metal concentration values were Zn (107) > Pb (28. 7) > Cu (16.9) > As (11.2) > Cr (4.99) in leaves and Zn (104.32) > Pb (27.02) > Cu (15.29) > As (10.39) > Cr (3.80) in roots. The translocation and bioaccumulation factors of heavy metals suggested that the mangrove plant species, A. ilicifolius can be used for phytoremediation and phytoextraction since the bio-concentration factor and translocation factor > 1. The studied species exhibited the metal tolerance associated with two following strategies, metal exclusion, and metal accumulation. However, excess metal tolerance can impact the surrounding marine environment.

Chemodiversity of Dissolved Organic Matter and Its Molecular Changes Driven by Rhizosphere Activities in Fe Ore Tailings Undergoing Eco-Engineered Pedogenesis

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in soil structure and biogeochemical function development, which are fundamental for the eco-engineering of tailings-soil formation to underpin sustainable tailings rehabilitation. In the present study, we have characterized the DOM composition and its molecular changes in an alkaline Fe ore tailing primed with organic matter (OM) amendment and plant colonization. The results demonstrated that microbial OM decomposition dramatically increased DOM richness and average molecular weight, as well as its degree of unsaturation, aromaticity, and oxidation in the tailings. Plant colonization drove molecular shifts of DOM by depleting the unsaturated compounds with a high value of nominal oxidation state of carbon (NOSC), such as tannin-like and carboxyl-rich polycyclic-like compounds. This may be partially related to their sequestration by secondary Fe-Si minerals formed from rhizosphere-driven mineral weathering. Furthermore, the molecular shifts of DOM may have also resulted from plant-regulated microbial community changes, which further influenced DOM molecules through microbial-DOM interactions. These findings contribute to the understanding of DOM biogeochemistry and ecofunctionality in the tailings during early pedogenesis driven by OM input and pioneer plant/microbial colonization, providing an important basis for the development of strategies and technologies toward the eco-engineering of tailings-soil formation.

Deciphering the origin of Cu, Pb and Zn contamination in school dust and soil of Dhaka, a megacity in Bangladesh

In recent decades, anthropogenic activities have resulted in road dust and roadside soil hosted metal(oid)s pollution in the urban environment. In the South-Asian megacity "Dhaka", schools are situated in the areas with high population density and high traffic emissions. As the school-going children are the most vulnerable receptor, school premises in Dhaka city represent an important yet overlooked exposure point to contaminated dust and soil. Therefore, the present study investigated the metal(oid)s (Cu, Pb, Zn and As) pollution in dust and soil at school compounds, explored their possible sources and estimated the associated human health risk. This study revealed that dust contained higher concentration of metal(oid)s than soil, and the Azimpur Govt. Girls School & College was identified as the most contaminated site. The enrichment of school dust with Cu, Zn and Pb were strictly related to the dense population and substantial traffic activity in the study areas. Arsenic content in school soil was several folds higher than its concentration in the upper crust. Natural and anthropogenic activities possibly posed a synergistic effect on such high soil As. The multivariate statistics suggested that Cu, Zn and Pb were likely to be originated from traffic-related activities, while Zr, Fe, Ti and Rb from natural sources, and K, Sr and Ca from industrial activities. The assessment of health risk suggested the children as a vulnerable receptor and ingestion was identified as the dominant pathway of dust and soil exposure. The hazard index (HI) values were lower than unity, suggesting no possible non-cancer health risk. Arsenic posed a lifetime carcinogenic risk to the population in the study area through soil ingestion and dermal adsorption.

Acidophilic Iron- and Sulfur-Oxidizing Bacteria, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, Drives Alkaline pH Neutralization and Mineral Weathering in Fe Ore Tailings

The neutralization of strongly alkaline pH conditions and acceleration of mineral weathering in alkaline Fe ore tailings have been identified as key prerequisites for eco-engineering tailings-soil formation for sustainable mine site rehabilitation. Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans has great potential in neutralizing alkaline pH and accelerating primary mineral weathering in the tailings but little information is available. This study aimed to investigate the colonization of A. ferrooxidans in alkaline Fe ore tailings and its role in elemental sulfur (S⁰) oxidation, tailings neutralization, and Fe-bearing mineral weathering through a microcosm experiment. The effects of biological S⁰ oxidation on the weathering of alkaline Fe ore tailings were examined via various microspectroscopic analyses. It is found that (1) the A. ferrooxidans inoculum combined with the S⁰ amendment rapidly neutralized the alkaline Fe ore tailings; (2) A. ferrooxidans activities induced Fe-bearing primary mineral (e.g., biotite) weathering and secondary mineral (e.g., ferrihydrite and jarosite) formation; and (3) the association between bacterial cells and tailings minerals were likely facilitated by extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The behavior and biogeochemical functionality of A. ferrooxidans in the tailings provide a fundamental basis for developing microbial-based technologies toward eco-engineering soil formation in Fe ore tailings.

Groundwater hydrogeochemistry and probabilistic health risk assessment through exposure to arsenic-contaminated groundwater of Meghna floodplain, central-east Bangladesh

A clear understanding of various hydrogeochemical processes is essential for the protection of groundwater quality, which is a prime concern in Bangladesh. The present study deals with the geochemistry of groundwater at various depths to investigate the hydrogeochemical processes controlling the water quality of Meghna floodplain, the sources and mechanisms of arsenic (As) liberation, and the estimation of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks (using probabilistic and deterministic approaches) to the adults and children of the Comilla district, central-east Bangladesh. The groundwaters were generally of Ca-Mg-HCO₃ type, and water-sediment interaction was the dominant factor in evolving the chemical signatures. The dissolution of carbonates, weathering of silicates, and cation exchange processes governed the major ion chemistry. Dissolved As concentration ranged from 0.002 to 0.36 mg/L and Monte Carlo simulation-based probabilistic estimation of cancer risk suggested that; (1) ~ 83% of the waters exceeded the higher end of the acceptable limit of 1 × 10^-4; (2) the probability of additional cases of cancer in every 10,000 adults and children were on average ~9 and ~5, respectively; (3) adults were more susceptible than children; and (4) ingestion was the main pathway of As poisoning and the contribution of dermal contact was negligible (<1%). According to sensitivity analysis, the duration of exposure to As and its concentration in groundwater posed the greatest impact on cancer risk assessment. However, hydrogeochemical investigations on the sources and mobilization mechanisms of As suggested that the reductive dissolution of Fe and Mn oxyhydroxides was the principal process of As release in groundwater. The oxidation of pyrite and competitive exchange of fertilizer-derived phosphate for the sorbed As were not postulated as the plausible explanation for As liberation.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) induced impairment of in vitro pollen performance of Peltophorum pterocarpum (DC.) K. Heyne

Increasing use of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in myriad applications including electronics, medicines and agriculture has led to serious concerns regarding its release to plant ecosystems. Over the years, numerous studies have demonstrated the toxic impact of AgNPs in a variety of cell and tissue systems involved in vegetative growth across a wide range of plant species. However, assessing their impact on haploid phase of plant life cycle was restricted only to a study with Kiwifruit. In this study, in vitro pollen performance of Peltophorum pterocarpum at two endpoints i.e., germination and tube growth was assessed to evaluate the impact of nanoparticulate or ionic form of silver. Increasing concentrations of AgNO₃/AgNPs significantly reduced the pollen germination and retarded the tube growth. The EC 50 values indicated a more potent toxic effect of AgNPs than AgNO₃ on pollen germination as well as tube growth. Impairment of pollen performance was more pronounced at the stage of emergence of pollen tube. Extensive alterations in the muri and lumen of exine as revealed through SEM analysis and subsequent blockage of germpore might disrupt the emergence of pollen tube. The dynamics of pollen tube growth was analyzed with polynomial models of different degrees. A high degree of polynomial, the quintic model was able to approximate the real data points with highest coefficient of determination and smallest RMSE, compared to other models. An oscillating pattern of tube growth was portrayed with the passage of time in all the treatments that fits well with the established mechanistic oscillatory model of tube growth. It appears that exposure to AgNO₃/AgNPs inhibited pollen germination and retarded tube growth without affecting the oscillatory behavior of tip-growth.

Combining molecular docking and molecular dynamics studies for modelling Staphylococcus aureus MurD inhibitory activity

The ATP-dependent bacterial MurD enzyme catalyses the formation of the peptide bond between cytoplasmic intermediate UDP-N-acetylmuramoyl-L-alanine and D-glutamic acid. This is essential for bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan synthesis in both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. MurD is recognized as an important target for the development of new antibacterial agents. In the present study we prepared the 3D-stucture of the catalytic pocket of the Staphylococcus aureus MurD enzyme by homology modelling. Extra-precision docking, binding free energy calculation by the MM-GBSA approach and a 40 ns molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of 2-thioxothiazolidin-4-one based inhibitor $1 was carried out to elucidate its inhibition potential for the S. aureus MurD enzyme. Molecular docking results showed that Lys19, Gly147, Tyr148, Lys328, Thr330 and Phe431 residues are responsible for the inhibitor-protein complex stabilization. Binding free energy calculation revealed electrostatic solvation and van der Waals energy components as major contributors for the inhibitor binding. The inhibitor-modelled S. aureus protein complex had a stable conformation in response to the atomic flexibility and interaction, when subjected to MD simulation at 40 ns in aqueous solution. We designed some molecules as potent inhibitors of S. aureus MurD, and to validate the stability of the designed molecule D1-modelled protein complex we performed a 20 ns MD simulation. Results obtained from this study can be utilized for the design of potent S. aureus MurD inhibitors.

Seasonal to decadal scale influence of environmental drivers on Ba/Ca and Y/Ca in coral aragonite from the southern Great Barrier Reef

Extensive catchment modification since European settlement on the eastern coast of Australia results in poor coastal water quality, which poses a major threat for near shore coral communities in the iconic Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Long lived inshore corals have the potential to provide long-term temporal records of changing water quality both pre- and post-anthropogenic modification. However, water quality proxies require more study and validation of the robustness of coral-hosted geochemical proxies for a specific site is critical. This study investigated the long-term (1958-2010) influence of environmental drivers on high-resolution Ba/Ca and Y/Ca proxies obtained from Porites sp. coral from Great Keppel Island, southern GBR, Australia. Geochemical proxy records were influenced by environmental change on a seasonal to decadal scale. Although seasonal oscillations of Ba/Ca and Y/Ca were related to rainfall and discharge from the Fitzroy River catchment, some uncorrelated anomalous peaks were evident throughout the time series. Regardless, the behaviour of these proxies was significantly consistent over the longer time scale. Most long-term drought-breaking floods, including one that occurred in winter, resulted in significant increase in the targeted elemental ratios owing to higher terrigenous sediment flux to the near shore marine environment from a catchment with reduced groundcover. Following this intense flushing event, elemental ratios were reduced in subsequent wet periods as a result of less sediment being available for transport to coastal seawater. Ba/Ca and Y/Ca proxies can be valuable tools in reconstructing multiyear variations in terrestrial runoff and associated inshore water quality. As these proxies and their regional and local controls are better understood they will aid our understanding of how reefs have responded and may respond to changing water conditions.

Metal concentrations in fillet and gill of parrotfish (Scarus ghobban) from the Persian Gulf and implications for human health

Despite the benefits of seafood's consumption, the bioaccumulation of metals in fish can endanger consumers' health. This study analyzed lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), Arsenic (As), and Cadmium (Cd) concentrations in fillet and gill of parrotfish (Scarus ghobban) using flame atomic adsorption spectroscopy (FAAS). The potential non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks due to consumption of Scarus ghobban fillet were assessed by estimating average target hazard quotient (THQ) and total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) and Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk cancer risk (ILCR) of the analyzed metals. This study indicated that Cd, Pb, As and Hg concentrations were significantly (p < 0.05) lower than Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and national standard limits. The meal concentrations (μg/kg dry weight) in both fillet and gill were ranked as follows Pb > Cd > As > Hg. THQ and TTHQ were lower than 1 for adults and children, indicating that consumers were not at considerable non-carcinogenic risk. However, ILCR value for As was greater than 10^-4, indicating that consumers are at carcinogenic risk. Overall, this research highlighted that although the consumption of parrotfish from the Persian Gulf does not pose non-carcinogenic health risks, carcinogenic risks derived from toxic As can be detrimental for local consumers.

Industrial metal pollution in water and probabilistic assessment of human health risk

Concentration of eight heavy metals in surface and groundwater around Dhaka Export Processing Zone (DEPZ) industrial area were investigated, and the health risk posed to local children and adult residents via ingestion and dermal contact was evaluated using deterministic and probabilistic approaches. Metal concentrations (except Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn) in Bangshi River water were above the drinking water quality guidelines, while in groundwater were less than the recommended limits. Concentration of metals in surface water decreased as a function of distance. Estimations of non-carcinogenic health risk for surface water revealed that mean hazard index (HI) values of As, Cr, Cu, and Pb for combined pathways (i.e., ingestion and dermal contact) were >1.0 for both age groups. The estimated risk mainly came from the ingestion pathway. However, the HI values for all the examined metals in groundwater were <1.0, indicating no possible human health hazard. Deterministically estimated total cancer risk (TCR) via Bangshi River water exceeded the acceptable limit of 1 × 10^-4 for adult and children. Although, probabilistically estimated 95th percentile values of TCR exceeded the benchmark, mean TCR values were less than 1 × 10^-4. Simulated results showed that 20.13% and 5.43% values of TCR for surface water were >1 × 10^-4 for adult and children, respectively. Deterministic and probabilistic estimations of cancer risk through exposure to groundwater were well below the safety limit. Overall, the population exposed to Bangshi River water remained at carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health threat and the risk was higher for adults. Sensitivity analysis identified exposure duration (ED) and ingestion rate (IR) of water as the most relevant variables affecting the probabilistic risk estimation model outcome.

Coral skeletal geochemistry as a monitor of inshore water quality

Coral reefs maintain extraordinary biodiversity and provide protection from tsunamis and storm surge, but inshore coral reef health is degrading in many regions due to deteriorating water quality. Deconvolving natural and anthropogenic changes to water quality is hampered by the lack of long term, dated water quality data but such records are required for forward modelling of reef health to aid their management. Reef corals provide an excellent archive of high resolution geochemical (trace element) proxies that can span hundreds of years and potentially provide records used through the Holocene. Hence, geochemical proxies in corals hold great promise for understanding changes in ancient water quality that can inform broader oceanographic and climatic changes in a given region. This article reviews and highlights the use of coral-based trace metal archives, including metal transported from rivers to the ocean, incorporation of trace metals into coral skeletons and the current 'state of the art' in utilizing coral trace metal proxies as tools for monitoring various types of local and regional source-specific pollution (river discharge, land use changes, dredging and dumping, mining, oil spills, antifouling paints, atmospheric sources, sewage). The three most commonly used coral trace element proxies (i.e., Ba/Ca, Mn/Ca, and Y/Ca) are closely associated with river runoff in the Great Barrier Reef, but considerable uncertainty remains regarding their complex biogeochemical cycling and controlling mechanisms. However, coral-based water quality reconstructions have suffered from a lack of understanding of so-called vital effects and early marine diagenesis. The main challenge is to identify and eliminate the influence of extraneous local factors in order to allow accurate water quality reconstructions and to develop alternate proxies to monitor water pollution. Rare earth elements have great potential as they are self-referencing and reflect basic terrestrial input.

Spatial distribution and contamination assessment of six heavy metals in soils and their transfer into mature tobacco plants in Kushtia District, Bangladesh

Although the tobacco production and consumption rate in Bangladesh is very high and a substantial portion of premature deaths is caused by tobacco smoking, the status of heavy metals in tobacco plants has not yet determined. This study, therefore, investigated the concentrations of Cu, Ni, Cd, Pb, Cr, and Zn in tobacco plants and their surrounding agricultural soils in Kushtia District, Bangladesh. The geochemical maps showed a similar spatial distribution pattern of the analyzed metals and identified Shempur, Kharara, Taragunia, and Shantidanga as metal hot spots. Geoanalytical indexes were applied to assess the extent of soil contamination, and the results depicted that the soils of Shempur, Kharara, Taragunia, and Shantidanga were moderately contaminated where Cd contributed the most to contamination degree (C d) in spite of its relative low content. However, other five areas in Kushtia District were suggested as uncontaminated according to both C d and pollution load index (PLI). The hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) showed no possible indication of human health risks via ingestion of agricultural soils. This study also determined that human activities such as excess application of commercial fertilizers, animal manures, and metal-based pesticides were the sources of Cu, Ni, Cd, and Cr enrichment in soils and that the metals into tobacco plants were transported from the soils. The present study conclusively suggested that regulation of improper use of agrochemicals and continuous monitoring of heavy metals in tobacco plants are needed to reduce the tobacco-related detrimental health problems in Bangladesh.

Intraguild Predation in Heteroptera: Effects of Density and Predator Identity on Dipteran Prey

In tropical freshwaters, different species of water bugs (Heteroptera) constitute a guild sharing similar prey resources including chironomid and mosquito larvae. Assuming possibilities of intraguild predation (IGP) among the constituent members, an attempt was made to evaluate the effects of prey and predator density on the mortality of mosquito and chironomid larvae (shared prey), using Laccotrephes griseus Guérin-Méneville (Hemiptera: Nepidae) and Ranatra filiformis Fabricius (Hemiptera: Nepidae) as IG predators and Anisops bouvieri Kirkaldy (Hemiptera: Notonectidae) as IG prey. The predation on mosquito and chironomid larvae varied with the density and combinations of the predators. When present as conspecific IG predators, L. griseus exhibited greater effect on the prey mortality than R. filiformis. The effects on shared prey suggest that the two predators are not substitutable in terms of the effect on the shared prey mortality. The mortality of A. bouvieri (IG prey) at low shared prey density was significantly different (p < 0.05) from high shared prey density. In view of predatory effect of the heteropteran predators on the dipteran larvae, the results suggest possible interference by the presence of A. bouvieri as an intermediate predator. It seems that the presence of heteropteran predators including A. bouvieri as IG prey may benefit the dipteran prey under situations when the density is low in tropical waters. The intensity of the predatory effect may differ based on the species composition at IG predator level. For mosquito biological control, the interactions between the predators may not be substitutable and are independent in their effects.

Prey preferences of aquatic insects: potential implications for the regulation of wetland mosquitoes

Wetlands are potential sites for mosquito breeding and are thus important in the context of public health. The use of chemical and microbial controls is constrained in wetlands in view of their potential impact on the diverse biota. Biological control using generalist aquatic insects can be effective, provided a preference for mosquito larvae is exhibited. The mosquito prey preferences of water bugs and larvae of odonate species were evaluated using chironomid larvae, fish fingerlings and tadpoles as alternative prey. Manly's selectivity (αi ) values with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated to judge prey preference patterns. Multivariate analysis of variance (manova) and standardized canonical coefficients were used to test the effects of density on prey selectivity. The αi values indicated a significant preference (P < 0.05) in all of the insect predators tested for mosquito larvae over the alternative prey as a density-dependent function. On a comparative scale, chironomid larvae had the highest impact as alternative prey. In a multiple-prey experiment, predators showed a similar pattern of preference for mosquito larvae over alternative prey, reflecting a significant (P < 0.05) niche overlap. The results suggest that, in a laboratory setting, these insect predators can effectively reduce mosquito density in the presence of multiple alternative prey.

Urinary tuberculosis presented as isolated bladder lesion - a case report

Extra-pulmonary Tuberculosis (EPTB) may affect all organs of the body with varied presentations. Genitourinary tuberculosis (GUTB) carries importance for its morbidity, though it is an uncommon form of TB. A widow of 45 years was admitted with several episodes of painless haematuria and recently developed urinary incontinence. Diagnosis of urinary bladder tuberculosis was made only by histopathology from bladder lesion with supportive evidence of few nonspecific constitutional symptoms and positive family history of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and persistent sterile pyuria. Upper urinary tract involvement was not found. Category 1 anti-TB treatment was started. With this treatment recovery of the patient is satisfactory and symptoms are disappearing except for the incontinence. Urinary tuberculosis should be ruled out in a case of painless haematuria, repeated sterile pyuria.

Congenital stenosis in the descending colon causing intestinal obstruction in a one and half years male child

A one and half years male child presented with constipation with severe colicky abdominal pain, bilious vomiting & abdominal distension. He had history of recurrent bouts of constipation followed by gastroenteritis since birth for which he had taken symptomatic treatment & sometimes remained symptom free but he had no other significant history or associated condition. In laboratory investigations, barium enema study of large gut result simulates to Hirschsprung's disease but suction rectal biopsy revealed normal rectal tissue texture. So, consideration of diagnostic tools along with patient's general condition decision was taken for diagnostic laparotomy & peroperatively the child was diagnosed as a case of intestinal obstruction due to congenital colonic stenosis in the descending colon. After resection of stenotic segment and end to end anastomosis, histopathologycal examination of resected stenosed colon was done & it was finally proved as congenital stenosis in the descending colon. The post operative period of the patient was uneventful and he was discharged on 7th postoperative day & followed up upto 6 months. He had been found alright without any complain. Here we tried to high light that the congenital colonic stenosis as a rare, but might be a possible cause of partial/complete intestinal obstruction from newborn to older children in any part of the colon & that should kept in mind for avoiding diagnostic dilemma & proper management of patient.

Evaluation of possible health risks of heavy metals by consumption of foodstuffs available in the central market of Rajshahi City, Bangladesh

Considering the human health risk due to the consumption of foodstuffs, the concentrations of heavy metals (lead, manganese, chromium, cadmium, and arsenic) are investigated in vegetables, fruits, and fish species collected from the central market (called Shaheb Bazar) of Rajshahi City, Bangladesh. The foodstuffs examined for metal constituents are the basis of human nutrition in the study area. The highest concentrations of Mn and As in vegetables (onion and pointed gourd, respectively), Cr and Cd in fruits (black berry and mango, respectively), and Pb in fish (catla) are recorded. Health risks associated with these heavy metals are evaluated due to dietary intake. Target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI) are calculated to evaluate the non-carcinogenic health risk from individual and combined heavy metals. The THQ values for individual heavy metals are below 1, suggesting that people would not experience significant health risks if they ingest a single heavy metal from one kind of foodstuff (e.g., vegetables). However, consumption of several of the foodstuffs could lead a potential health risk to human population since HI value is higher than 1. The relative contributions of vegetables, fishes, and fruits to HI are 49.44, 39.07, and 11.53 %, respectively. Also, the relative contributions of Pb, Cd, As, Mn, and Cr to HI are 51.81, 35.55, 11.73, 0.85, and 0.02 %, respectively. The estimation shows that the carcinogenic risk of arsenic exceeds the accepted risk level of 1 × 10(-6). Thus, the carcinogenic risk of arsenic for consumers is a matter of concern.

Surgical outcome of laparoscopic and open surgery of pediatric inguinal hernia

Inguinal hernia repair is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in infants and young children. This prospective comparative study was conducted with initial experience in the department of pediatric surgery, Dhaka Shishu (children) hospital during the period of July 2007 to August 2008. We enrolled 62 children undergoing surgery for inguinal hernia, of which 30 underwent laparoscopic procedure (bilateral in 21, unilateral 9) and 32 open procedures (bilateral in 5, unilateral in 27). Mean±SD patient age was 5.92±2.11 months in laparoscopic group and 6.63±2.64 months in open group (p=0.264), 3 months to 5 years in both groups. Patients were studied under variables of operative time, duration of postoperative hospital stay & post operative complications. During laparoscopy a contralateral patent processus vaginalis of ≥2cm was noted and repaired peroperatively in 18 out of 27 children (66%), who were initially diagnosed as unilateral hernia. For unilateral repair mean±SD operative time was significantly longer in Group A (62.63±52.75) minutes compares to the Group B (29.37±9.40), p<0.001. On the contrary, for bilateral repair Mean±SD operative time was comparable between the two groups (64.65±49.70) minutes for laparoscopy & (35.65±11.53 minutes) for open herniotomy & P=0.01, that was not remarkably significant. The mean±SD post operative length of hospital stay (in hours) 36.00±32.7 hours in Group A compared to 29.97±11.82 hours in Group B which was not statically significant (p=0.342). The mean±SD follow up was 24.5±10.5 months in laparoscopic group (Group A) & 22.5±10.5 months in open group (Group B), p=0.251. Regarding post operative complication, in this study, contra lateral metachronous inguinal hernia (CMIH) manifested in none of the patient out of 27 (total unilateral repaired number) patients in laparoscopic group but contrary to this in open group 2 patients out of 27 had developed CMIH & p value was <0.05, which is statistically significant. There were 2 cases of scrotal hydrocele out of 30, observed in Group A whereas 1 case out of 32 in Group B, p=0.49, which was statistically insignificant. The scrotal hydrocele was lasted only for 2 days & resolved spontaneously. About recurrence after operation, our study noted that, 1 case (3.3%) out of 30 in laparoscopic group and 2 cases (6%) out of 32 in open surgery group had developed recurrent inguinal hernia in about one year follow up where p value was 0.459, & it was statistically insignificant. In this study, none of the patient had developed post operative testicular atrophy (due to any vas or vascular injury) or testicular ascend. So, overall this study result implies that, Laparoscopic herniotomy might be a safe and effective option as open herniotomy for the treatment of inguinal hernia in children but which one would be superior or best option it requires a large series of randomized trial.

Congenital duodenal web (wind-soak variety) in the fourth part of the duodenum causing obstruction in a female child

Delayed presentation of Duodenal Obstruction is a great diagnostic dilemma due to non-specific, varied & wide spectrum presentation. In this study, a 6 years female child presented with recurrent, intermittent, colicky abdominal pain with bilious vomiting, and occasional constipation from 9 months of her age, without having any significant family history or associated condition. She was initially diagnosed as a case of recurrent small bowel obstruction due to atypical variant of malrotation. But, after laparotomy, she was finally diagnosed as a case of recurrent duodenal obstruction due to Congenital Duodenal Web (Wind-Soak Variety) with a central hole in the fourth part of the duodenum. After uneventful recovery of post operative period the patient was discharged at 7th postoperative day & followed up upto 3 months. She had been found alright without any complication.

Congenital urogenital sinus anomaly without Adrenal Hyperplasia

Urogenital sinus anomaly is a mal-development of female urogenital system, usually associated with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia and may varied in presentation according to embryologic separation and length of sharing of common channel between vagina and urethra. We report a case of pure urogenital sinus anomaly of 2.5 years female child without any feature of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia or any other associated anomalies which is quite uncommon. The patient was diagnosed with thorough physical, biochemical, radiological and endoscopic evaluation. She had clitiromegaly, very poorly developed fused Labia minoras with a central hole, the length of common channel was about 2.5 cm and the level of vaginal confluence was at the mid portion of common channel. After in general counseling to parents, according to their desire she was operated. We performed Labialo-clitoro-vagino-urothroplasty and from post operative period to till now (after 3 months of operation) she is uneventful. Both functionally and cosmetically she is sound and her parents are also happy.

Laparoscopic versus open pyloromyotomy for infantile hypertropic pyloric stenosis: an early experience

This prospective comparative study was conducted with an initial experience in the Department of Pediatric Surgery, Dhaka Shishu (Children) Hospital during the period of December 2007 to January 2009, with the infants of 2-12 weeks age, diagnosed as Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis. Patients selection was done by simple random technique by means of lottery. For open pyloromyotomy conventional method & for laparoscopic pyloromyotomy three trocher techniques was applied. In this study, among 60 cases with infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, 30 cases were finally selected for analysis irrespectively both in laparoscopic (Group A) & in open pyloromyotomy (Group B) group. Patients were studied under variables of operative time, required time of full feeds after operation, post operative hospital stay & both per and post operative complications. Regarding operative time, in Group A, mean±SD operating time (in minutes) was 61.59±51.73 whereas in Group B it was 28.33±8.40 & P value was 0.001. The result was statistically significant. The mean±SD time (in hours) of full feeds (ad libitum) was 35.00±31.70 hours in Group A compared to 28.95±10.99 hours in Group B and P value was found 0.342ns which was not statistically significant. On study of total length (in days) of post operative hospital stay, mean±SD was 3.09±2.25 & 2.58±1.15days in laparoscopic group & open pyloromyotomy group respectively. The p value was 0.355ns, which was statistically insignificant. Again, on study of complications, per operatively 6(19.5%) patients had developed haemorrage, 1(3.33%) had mucosal perforation & 4(13.36%) had developed duodenal serosal injury in laparoscopic group whereas only 1(3.33%) patient in open pyloromyotomy group had nothing else except simple hemorrhage. The p value (0.051ns) was also statistically insignificant. In regard to post operative complications, 2(6.6%) patients had developed wound hematoma, 2(6.6%) had wound infection, 1(3.33 %) had developed wound dehiscence and incisional hernia respectively in Group A. But in group B there was no subject with any complication. This result was also statistically insignificant. So, the overall study results denote that, laparoscopic pyloromyotomy would not be considered as a superior procedure or as safe as that of traditional open pyloromyotomy for the beginners.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is a pathological lead point causing large gut (colo-colic varity) intussusception

Intussusception secondary to Primary Non-Hodgkin lymphoma presenting colo-colic variety is a very rare clinical entity and sometimes causing diagnostic dilemma due to non-specific, varied & wide spectrum presentation. In this study, a 9 years female child presented with recurrent, intermittent, colicky abdominal pain with occasional bilious vomiting, along with a left illiac fossa swelling & occasional per rectal bleeding and constipation for 3 months was clinically diagnosed as a case of recurrent obstructing intussusception. At laparotomy, a colo-colic intussusception with prolapsed intussusception was marked & finally on histopathology, she was diagnosed as a case of colo-colic variety of intussusception due to primary Non-Hodgkin lymphoma- a pathological lead point in mid transverse colon. After uneventful recovery of post operative period she was treated with combination chemotherapy accordingly & follow up was given up to 5 years. She had been found alright without any recurrence or organ involvement. The study focused on the avoidance of unusual delay in diagnosis as well as in proper management of rare variants of intussusception.

Comparison of post operative morbidity between laparoscopic and open appendectomy in children

This prospective comparative study was conducted in the department of Pediatric Surgery, Dhaka Shishu (children) Hospital during the period of June 2007 to September 2008 with the children of <12 years, diagnosed as acute Appendicitis. Patient selection was done by simple random technique by means of lottery. For open Appendectomy (OA) conventional method & for Laparoscopic Appendectomy (LA) 3 trocher technique was applied. Data was analyzed with the help of SPSS version 10. In this study 60 cases with acute Appendicitis including both gender were studied by two groups, group-A include 30 cases for laparoscopic and group-B include 30 cases for open appendectomy. Postoperative pain was assessed in both groups by using FLACC scale and compared at 1st 6-hours, 24 hours, 72 hours, 96 hours & at day 7. At 1st 6-hours, most of the children 24(80%) of group A had moderate pain whereas 17(56.7%) children of group B had severe pain (p<0.001). At 24 hours most of the patient 17(56.7%) of group A had mild pain compared to 27 (90%) patients of group B had moderate pain (p<0.0001). At 48 hours in group A most of the children 23(76.7%) had mild pain compared to moderate pain in 18(60%) children of group B (p<0.0001). Subsequently at 72 hours and at 96 hours most of the patients of LA group were free of pain compared to OA group. At final follow-up on day 7, 29(96.7%) children of group A had no pain compared to 26(86.7%) of group B. Regarding analgesics requirement both qualitative & quantitative requirements of analgesics were less in LA group than OA group. About post operative wound infection in group A only 1(3.3%) case had developed post operative wound infection whereas in group B 7(23.3 %) cases had. The mean (+/-SD) of post operative length of hospital stay was 52.00+/-11.62 (range 48-96) hours for group A and 76.00+/-12.74 (range 48-96) hours for group B children (p<0.001). Laparoscopic Appendectomy is more effective, preferable & superior procedure than that of open Appendectomy to reduce the post operative morbidity in children undergone appendectomy for acute appendicitis.

Blood protein polymorphism in the one-humped camel (Camelus dromedarius) in the Sudan

The blood protein polymorphism of serum albumin, haptoglobin, transferrin, ceruloplasmin and haemoglobin have been studied in 135 samples from one-humped Arabian camel (Camelus dromedarius) of the Sudan by starch gel electrophoresis. Only the serum albumin and haptoglobin systems exhibited polymorphism with the estimated frequencies of 0.0222, 0.2227 and 0.7773 for Albv, Hp1 and Hp2 respectively. The frequency of Hp0 was 0.0325. No electrophoretic variant was observed at transferrin, ceruloplasmin and haemoglobin loci in the camel. The activity of the ceruloplasmin of the camel sera was weak.

Influence of apolipoprotein B signal peptide insertion/deletion polymorphism on serum lipids and apolipoproteins in a Chinese population

Insertion/deletion polymorphism of the apo B gene encoding signal peptide and its influence on serum lipids and apolipoproteins was studied in 269 Chinese of both sexes in Singapore. The frequency of the Del allele was found to be 0.20, which is significantly lower than that in Caucasians (France) (0.34). The distribution of genotypes of ins/del polymorphism was at Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in this population. There was an excess of individuals with the deletion allele in hypercholesterolemic subjects compared to those with normal cholesterol levels (P less than 0.05). All the lipid and apolipoprotein values were regressed for age, sex and BMI by multiple regression analysis. Individuals with one or two del alleles had significantly higher levels of serum total cholesterol (248.8 +/- 13.0 and 255.4 +/- 20.4 mg/dl, respectively) compared to those in individuals with only the Ins allele (218.4 +/- 7.8 mg/dl) (P less than 0.05). Serum LDL cholesterol level was also significantly higher in individuals with del allele (173.4 +/- 11.7 mg/dl) compared to that in those without the del allele (141.1 +/- 7.4 mg/dl) (P = 0.02). The percentages of sample variance of different lipid traits explained by apo B signal peptide polymorphism were estimated by analysis of variance (ANOVA) with sex, age and BMI as covariates. 2.3% of variability of serum total cholesterol (F = 3.27, P = 0.040) and 2.8% of LDL cholesterol (F = 3.87, P = 0.023) could be explained by the ins/del polymorphism of the apo B signal peptide gene.
