Abstract
This study investigated the impact of a brief meditation workshop on a sample of 223 novice meditators. Participants attended a three-day workshop comprising daily guided seated meditation sessions using music without vocals that focused on various emotional states and intentions (open focus). Based on the theory of integrative consciousness, it was hypothesized that altered states of consciousness would be experienced by participants during the meditation intervention as assessed using electroencephalogram (EEG). Brainwave power bands patterns were measured throughout the meditation training workshop, producing a total of 5616 EEG scans. Changes in conscious states were analysed using pre-meditation and post-meditation session measures of delta through to gamma oscillations. Results suggested the meditation intervention had large varying effects on EEG spectra (up to 50 % increase and 24 % decrease), and the speed of change from pre-meditation to post-meditation state of the EEG co-spectra was significant (with 0.76 probability of entering end-meditation state within the first minute). There was a main 5 % decrease in delta power (95 % HDI = [-0.07, -0.03]); a global increase in theta power of 29 % (95 % HDI = [0.27, 0.33]); a global increase of 16 % (95 % HDI = [0.13, 0.19]) in alpha power; a main effect of condition, with global beta power increasing by 17 % (95 % HDI = [0.15, 0.19]); and an 11 % increase (95 % HDI = [0.08, 0.14]) in gamma power from pre-meditation to end-meditation. Findings provided preliminary support for brief meditation in altering states of consciousness in novice meditators. Future clinical examination of meditation was recommended as an intervention for mental health conditions particularly associated with hippocampal impairments.

Abstract
An important question for skill acquisition is whether and how augmented feedback can be designed to improve the learning of complex skills. Auditory information triggered by learners' actions, movement sonification, can enhance learning of a complex bimanual coordination skill, specifically polyrhythmic bimanual shape tracing. However, it is not clear whether the coordination of polyrhythmic sequenced movements is enhanced by auditory-specified timing information alone or whether more complex sound mappings, such as melodic sonification, are necessary. Furthermore, while short-term retention of bimanual coordination performance has been shown with movement sonification training, longer term retention has yet to be demonstrated. In the present experiment, participants learned to trace a diamond shape with one hand while simultaneously tracing a triangle with the other to produce a sequenced 4:3 polyrhythmic timing pattern. Two groups of participants received real-time auditory feedback during training: melodic sonification (individual movements triggered a separate note of a melody) and rhythmic sonification (each movement triggered a percussive sound), while a third control group received no augmented feedback. Task acquisition and performance in immediate retention were superior in the melodic sonification group as compared to the rhythmic sonification and control group. In a 24-h retention phase, a decline in performance in the melodic sonification group was reversed by brief playback of the target pattern melody. These results show that melodic sonification of movement can provide advantages over augmented feedback which only provides timing information by better structuring the sequencing of timed actions, and also allow recovery of complex target patterns of movement after training. These findings have important implications for understanding the role of augmented perceptual information in skill learning, as well as its application to real-world training or rehabilitation scenarios.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this exploratory study was to investigate the effect of ethanol, isopropanol and n-propanol on stratum corneum (SC) enzymes and keratinocytes in vitro together with their effects on skin condition and function. METHODS Activities of kallikrein 5 (KLK5) and phospholipase A2 (PLA2) as well as keratinocyte metabolic activity, interleukin-1α (IL-1α) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were measured in vitro in the presence and absence of the different alcohols. We also measured transepidermal water loss (TEWL), skin capacitance, visual dryness and visual redness on the volar forearms of 25 Caucasian women following application of the alcohols 20 and 100 times per day over a period of 14 days in a clinical study. RESULTS Reduced activities of KLK5 and PLA2 were observed in the presence of the alcohols. The greatest denaturing effect was always observed for n-propanol (P < 0.001), and in the case of PLA2, the effect of isopropanol was greater than ethanol (P < 0.001). Equally, ethanol had the mildest effects on keratinocyte metabolic activity and cytokine secretion (P < 0.001) and n-propanol always produced the most severe changes in normal and differentiated keratinocytes. These in vitro findings supported the clinical results where the major effects were on the induction of skin irritation (increased dropout rates) and ranked the intolerance of the different alcohols as follows: n-propanol > isopropanol > ethanol. At the high application frequencies, the effect of the different alcohols on transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and skin capacitance was similar, but at the low application frequencies, n-propanol had a significant effect on TEWL and capacitance values (P < 0.05). Equally, n-propanol and isopropanol produced significantly more skin redness at the low application frequencies. CONCLUSIONS Clearly, isopropanol and n-propanol caused significant SC and keratinocyte perturbation in vitro together with damage to skin condition and function in vivo whereas ethanol did not. As a result, we show that ethanol-based sanitizers are better tolerated by skin, particularly in high-use settings, than other alcohols and should be the active ingredient of choice.

Abstract
AIMS In an era when clinical microbiology laboratories are under increasing financial pressure, there is a need for inexpensive, yet effective, rapid microbiology tests. The aim of this study was to evaluate a novel modification of standard methodology for the identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) of pathogens in positive blood cultures, reducing the turnaround time of laboratory results by 24 h. METHODS 277 positive blood cultures had a Gram stain performed and were subcultured and incubated at 37°C in a CO2 atmosphere for 4-6 h. Identification of the visible growth was performed using matrix-assisted laser desorption time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Taking a modified approach to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute-standardised AST methodology, an inoculum density of 0.5 McFarland was prepared from the early growth for disc diffusion testing. The standard AST method was also performed on the 18-24 h culture. RESULTS 96% (n=73/76) of gram-negative organisms were correctly identified by MALDI-TOF MS. Comparative analysis of the rapid and standard AST results showed an overall interpretive category error rate of 7.7% (6.7% minor errors, 0.6% major errors and 0.4% very major errors). 100% of Staphylococcus aureus (n=41) and enterococcus isolates (n=9) were correctly identified after 4-6 h incubation. The overall AST categorical agreement was also 100% for these isolates. CONCLUSIONS An incubation of 4-6 h directly from positive blood cultures allowed for both a rapid species identification and an antimicrobial susceptibility result approximately 24 h earlier than is possible using standard methodology.

Abstract
Genes encoding resistance to mercury and to antibiotics are often carried on the same mobile genetic element and so it is possible that mercury-containing dental materials may select for bacteria resistant to mercury and to antibiotics. The main aim of this study was to determine whether the prevalence of Hg-resistant oral bacteria was greater in children with mercury amalgam fillings than in those without. A secondary aim was to determine whether the Hg-resistant isolates were also antibiotic resistant. Bacteria in dental plaque and saliva from 41 children with amalgam fillings and 42 children without such fillings were screened for mercury resistance by cultivation on a HgCl(2)-containing medium. Surviving organisms were identified and their susceptibility to mercury and to several antibiotics was determined. Seventy-eight per cent and 74% of children in the amalgam group and amalgam-free group, respectively, harboured Hg-resistant bacteria; this difference was not statistically significant. Nor was there any significant difference between the groups in terms of the proportions of Hg-resistant bacteria in the oral microflora of the children. Of Hg-resistant bacteria, 88% and 92% from the amalgam group and the amalgam-free group, respectively, were streptococci; 41% and 33% were resistant to at least one antibiotic, most frequently tetracycline. The results of this study show that there was no significant difference between children with amalgam fillings and those without such fillings with regard to the prevalence, or the proportion, of Hg-resistant bacteria in their oral microflora. The study also found that Hg-resistant bacteria were common in children regardless of whether or not they had amalgam fillings and that many of these organisms were also resistant to antibiotics.

Abstract
Representative isolates from 10 distinct extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae that caused hospital outbreaks in the United Kingdom from 1991 to 1994 were examined for relationships between their enzymes and plasmids. The beta-lactamases were identified by a combination of isoelectric focusing and gene sequencing. SHV-2 beta-lactamase was produced by isolates from four outbreaks, SHV-5 was involved in three, and SHV-4, TEM-15, and TEM-26 were involved in one outbreak each. All of the extended-spectrum beta-lactamases were encoded by self-transmissible plasmids, with sizes ranging from about 70 to 160 kb. No similarities between the restriction digest patterns of the extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-encoding plasmids were detected, except to some extent between those that produced TEM-15 and TEM-26. Thus, outbreaks of hospital infection with these organisms in the United Kingdom from 1991 to 1994 involved distinct organisms and resistance plasmids and appeared to be unrelated.

Abstract
Between July and September 1997 a ceftazidime- and aminoglycoside-resistant strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae infected or colonized seven patients on three paediatric wards at Guy's Hospital in London. The patients were mostly neonates or infants recovering from cardiac surgery for congenital defects. The organism was probably introduced by an asymptomatic patient from Greece and the subsequent outbreak could largely be explained by person-to-person spread on individual wards and frequent transfers of patients between wards. The outbreak was controlled by patient isolation and attention to handwashing, and there were no fatalities. The organisms were non-typeable by serology but had a characteristic RAPD profile. They produced the extended spectrum beta-lactamase SHV-5 and the aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes AAC(6') + probably AAC(3)II, encoded on a conjugative plasmid of approximately 160 kb. Two other patients had multi-resistant klebsiellas, one of them an SHV-5 producer and one a TEM-5 producer, but these could be distinguished from each other and from the outbreak strain by serological and RAPD typing and by the genetics and mechanisms of their resistances. Three other multi-resistant enterobacteria were isolated during the outbreak: an Escherichia coli that had acquired the 160 kb resistance plasmid from the epidemic klebsiella, a Citrobacter isolated from one of the patients with the klebsiella but which did not produce SHV-5, and a TEM-5-producing Enterobacter. This outbreak illustrates the importance of screening patients from high-risk areas for multiply-resistant organisms on admission, and the value of bacterial typing and analysis of resistance mechanisms to define the epidemiology of hospital infection.

Abstract
In cases of disputed paternity investigated by DNA analysis, it is generally accepted that at least two independent exclusions be observed before concluding that a putative father is not the biological father of the child. We report here a case in which two apparent exclusions of paternity were obtained (at the loci FESFPS and TPOX), from a total of nineteen loci examined (short tandem repeats, AMFLPs, DQA1, Polymarkers). The combined paternity index of the other seventeen loci, and of two multilocus probes (33.15 and 33.6) would exceed twenty-eight trillion to one. In the absence of any alternative putative father (including close relatives of the man tested), we concluded that the most likely explanation for these results was that the putative father was indeed the biological father, but that two independent mutations had occurred in either the ovum and/or spermatozoon. We have altered our internal laboratory criterion for exclusion of paternity to require exclusions in three independent loci.

Abstract
Lower torso revascularisation following ischaemia results in a systemic inflammatory response. Endothelial barrier function is disrupted by neutrophil-derived proteases and oxidants. Taurine, an amino acid found in large quantities in neutrophils, is a powerful endogeneous anti-oxidant. The aims of this study were to investigate the systemic effects of reperfusion following lower limb revascularisation and to evaluate the role of taurine administration in preventing this injury. A rat model of aortic occlusion (30 min) followed by 2 h of reperfusion was used. Animals were randomised to one of three groups (n = 10 per group): control; ischaemia reperfusion untreated (IR) and taurine-treated. Taurine (4% solution) was administrated orally for 48 h prior to the experiment. Neutrophil infiltration and microvascular permeability were assessed by measuring tissue myeloperoxidase activity and wet/dry weights respectively in lung, liver, kidney, and in cardiac and skeletal muscle. Statistical analysis was by means of analysis of variance (ANOVA). Reperfusion resulted in pulmonary and renal microvascular injury as assessed by organ oedema. Hepatic tissue, skeletal and cardiac muscle were unaffected by lower limb revascularisation. Taurine was effective in preventing neutrophil-mediated pulmonary but not renal microvascular injury. These data suggest that, whilst reperfusion-induced pulmonary injury is predominantly neutrophil-mediated, agents other than neutrophil-derived oxidative metabolites, capable of independently causing organ injury through direct endothelial damage, are produced during reperfusion.

Abstract
Three groups of mutants with increased levels of beta-lactamase synthesis were selected from Citrobacter freundii 382010 by beta-lactam antibiotics at concentrations just above the MIC. Uninduced cultures of the hyperinducible group had 3- to 5-fold more beta-lactamase activity than the parent strain, with one mutant (termed type b) expressing 19 times the activity of the parent strain; the partially derepressed group had a relative 55-fold increase, while fully derepressed strains exhibited a 460-fold increase. Upon induction by growth in the presence of cefoxitin (32 micrograms/ml) for 2 h, the hyperinducible and derepressed groups had similar relative beta-lactamase activities of 650 and 725, respectively. Induction of beta-lactamase activity from partially derepressed mutants resulted in a relative activity of only 240. The ampD gene including its promoter region was amplified from the parent strain and the mutant strains by PCR. The sequence of ampD from the parent strain showed only three nucleotide changes from a previously published sequence, none of which resulted in a change to the deduced amino acid sequence. Hyperinducible mutant strains of type a had an amino acid change of either a tryptophan in codon 95 to an arginine (Trp-95-->Arg) (three mutants) or Ala-158-->Asp (one mutant). The hyperinducible type b strain had the change Tyr-102-->Asp. The derepressed strains had the following changes: Val-33-->Gly (one mutant), Asp-164-->Glu (one mutant), and Trp-95-->termination codon (two mutants). We infer that the amino acid changes in the hyperinducible mutants result in altered AmpD activity, whereas, in contrast, they lead to an inactive protein in derepressed mutants. No nucleotide differences were found in the ampD gene from partially derepressed strains.

Abstract
Among Escherichia coli organisms isolated at St. Thomas's Hospital during the years 1990 to 1994, the frequency of resistance to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (tested by disk diffusion in a ratio of 2:1) remained constant at about 5% of patient isolates (10 to 15% of the 41 to 45% that were amoxicillin resistant). Mechanisms of increased resistance were determined for 72 consecutively collected such amoxicillin-clavulanic acid-resistant isolates. MICs of the combination were 16-8 micrograms/ml for 51 (71%) of these and > or = 32-16 micrograms/ml for the remainder. The predominant mechanism was hyperproduction of enzymes isoelectrically cofocusing with TEM-1 (beta-lactamase activities, > 200 nmol of nitrocefin hydrolyzed per min per mg of protein) which was found in 44 isolates (61%); two isolates produced smaller amounts (approximately 150 nmol/min/mg) of such enzymes, and two isolates hyperproduced enzymes cofocusing with TEM-2. Eleven isolates produced enzymes cofocusing with OXA-1 beta-lactamase, which has previously been associated with resistance to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid. Ten isolates produced increased amounts of chromosomal beta-lactamase, and four of these additionally produced TEM-1 or TEM-2. Three isolates produced inhibitor-resistant TEM-group enzymes. In one of the enzymes (pI, 5.4), the amino acid sequence change was Met-67-->Val, and thus the enzyme is identical to TEM-34. Another (pI, 5.4) had the substitution Met-67-->Ile and is identical to IRT-I67, which we propose now be given the designation TEM-40. The third (pI, 5.2) had the substitution Arg-241-->Thr; this enzyme has not been reported previously and should be called TEM-41. The rarity and diversity of inhibitor-resistant TEM-group enzymes suggest that they are the result of spontaneous mutations that have not yet spread.

Abstract
In an approach to mapping physically the most distal 30 Mb of human chromosome 1p, region-specific clone libraries were generated by microdissection and microcloning. PFGE blot hybridization of single or low-copy microclones against rare-cutter digests of genomic DNA revealed physical linkage for groups of markers. Supplementary PFGE analysis of 31 1p36-p35-specific probes for genetically mapped loci established a total of 15 grouped sets, consisting of altogether 69 markers. Twelve of the grouped sets were located in 1pter-p36.12, as revealed by microcell hybrid mapping; the remaining three were localized proximal to 1p36.12. Regional assignment and ordering of most grouped sets was achieved either by evaluating the included genetic markers or by fluorescence in situ hybridization of representative probes. The genomic extent of individual grouped sets encompassed between 1100 and 2100 kb, covering a total of approximately 22 Mb of the distal chromosome 1p region. One particular grouped set was shown to contain seven polymorphic marker loci that were previously suggested to be distributed across the entire 1pter-p35 region. The increase in the number of hybridization marker probes in 1p36 and their physical mapping is expected to facilitate positional cloning experiments in this region; in particular, the construction of clone contigs may be greatly facilitated.

Abstract
The ability of beta-lactam compounds to induce synthesis of the class C beta-lactamase of Citrobacter freundii was assessed both directly and indirectly, the latter by measurement of the different susceptibilities of strains with inducible and depressed beta-lactamase synthesis and those of a beta-lactamase-negative strain. Most beta-lactam compounds were poor inducers but ampicillin, amoxycillin and cephalexin were moderately good inducers and cefoxitin, imipenem and meropenem were strong inducers. The ability of the compounds to select mutants in which the synthesis of the beta-lactamase was derepressed was also assessed. Imipenem and temocillin, which had a high degree of stability to the beta-lactamase failed to select such mutants or were very poor selectors. In contrast, most other compounds showed considerable lability to the beta-lactamase and readily selected derepressed mutants, whether they were strong inducers of beta-lactamase synthesis (for example cefoxitin) or poor inducers (cefotaxime, ceftazidime and many other compounds). Thus it appears that lability to the beta-lactamase is a more important factor in determining whether or not a compound will select derepressed mutants than the power of the compound as an inducer of beta-lactamase synthesis, since induction results in the production of less beta-lactamase than derepression as a result of mutation.

Abstract
The CD19 gene codes for one of the earliest markers of the human B cell lineage and is a target for the B lymphoid-specific transcription factor BSAP (Pax-5). The transmembrane protein CD19 has been implicated in controlling proliferation of mature B lymphocytes by modulating signal transduction through the antigen receptor. In this study, we have employed Southern blot and fluorescence in situ hybridization analyses to localize the CD19 gene to human chromosome 16p11.

Abstract
Glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzymes detoxify carcinogens in tobacco smoke. Interindividual variation in GST function may be related to differences in risk for smoking-related cancer. Leukocytes from 50% of Caucasians lack GST activity toward trans-stilbene oxide (TSO), due to a deletion of the gene for the GST-mu enzyme. Presence of GST-TSO activity in leukocytes has been associated with low risk for lung cancer among cigarette smokers. We sought to determine whether GST activity in lung tissue is determined by the same gene polymorphism and whether it is associated with risk for lung cancer. Subjects were cigarette smokers, identified at the time of lung resection or autopsy in Seattle hospitals. Uninvolved lung tissue was obtained from 35 patients with lung carcinoma and 43 control patients and assayed for GST-mu activity with TSO, for the presence of the GST-mu gene product with an immunological assay, and for the GST-mu gene with Southern blotting. Mailed questionnaires were used to collect information on subjects' smoking histories and exposures which might alter enzyme activity. Interindividual results from the three assays correlated well. Smokers with high GST-TSO enzyme activity present in their lung tissue had a lower risk for lung carcinoma than did smokers with no or low activity (relative risk = 0.30; 95% confidence interval, 0.11-0.79), as did smokers with GST-mu antigen identified in lung tissue versus those with no antigen (relative risk = 0.30; 95% confidence interval, 0.11-0.79). Smokers with both maternal and paternal copies of GST-mu DNA (n = 7) had a lower cancer risk than smokers lacking GST-mu DNA (n = 30; relative risk = 0.35; 95% confidence interval, 0.06-2.10). High GST-mu activity appeared to be associated with a greater decrease in lung cancer risk among 38 heavy cigarette smokers (relative risk = 0.15; 95% confidence interval, 0.03-0.64) than among 38 light smokers (relative risk = 0.61; 95% confidence interval, 0.14-2.60). Presence or absence and number of copies of the GST-mu gene appear to determine activity of the GST-mu enzyme in lung. Smokers with the GST-mu enzyme have approximately one-third of the risk for lung carcinoma of smokers without the enzyme.

Abstract
In the human paired box-containing (PAX) gene family, only two members, PAX-3 and PAX-6, which are associated with Waardenburg's syndrome and aniridia, respectively have been mapped to human chromosomes. We have now isolated cosmids for six additional human PAX genes (PAX-1,-2,-5,-7,-8,-9) and a polymerase chain reaction fragment for PAX-4. PAX-9 is a novel family member which is closely related in its paired domain to PAX-1. The chromosomal location of all cloned PAX genes was determined by analysis of somatic cell hybrids and (except PAX-4) by fluorescence in situ hybridization to metaphase chromosomes. PAX-1 and PAX-7 map to chromosomal regions containing previously assigned disease loci.

Abstract
The effects of deregulated expression of the human c-myc and MC29 v-myc oncogenes have been examined in a murine myelomonocytic cell line J774 (c-myc) and in a variety of myelomonocytic cell lines of different degrees of maturity generated from primary hematopoietic tissue (v-myc). Introduction of a Moloney murine leukemia virus long terminal repeat (LTR) c-myc construct into J774 cells resulted in constitutive expression of the exogenous myc gene and a concomitant increase in the degree of transformation and tumorigenicity of the cells. In addition, constitutive expression of exogenous myc inhibited induced differentiation of these cells by a variety of treatments including addition to the medium of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or the phorbol ester 12-O-tetradecanoyl phorbol 13-acetate (TPA) as well as complete withdrawal of serum from the medium. The degree of increased transformation, tumorigenicity and inhibition of terminal differentiation was dependent upon the level of exogenous myc expression. For the v-myc-generated myelomonocytic cell lines, introduction of v-myc resulted in a high degree of transformation and, irrespective of the differentiation status of the cells, a block of induced differentiation. These results indicate that the level of constitutive myc expression can affect the transformed phenotype, tumorigenicity and differentiation inducibility of myelomonocytic cells.

Abstract
The discriminative capacity of ribotyping was initially assessed without knowledge of results obtained for the same isolates by use of more established typing methods. Forty-eight isolates of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) from peritoneal fluids were studied. They were collected prospectively during 31 consecutive episodes of infection associated with peritoneal dialysis in 17 patients. DNA was digested by the restriction endonucleases EcoRI or HindIII and ribotyped by means of a biotinylated cDNA probe to 16S + 23S staphylococcal ribosomal RNA gene sequences. These methods in combination produced a total of 27 types which compared well with numbers of groups distinguished by other typing methods: limited biotype-antibiotic resistogram (ARB; 28), antibiotic resistogram alone (25), API-Staph (12), phage typing (9) and plasmid analysis (22). Ribotyping was highly reproducible and typed all isolates, including those that were not phage-typable (35) or did not contain plasmids (4). When used in a hierarchical manner with ARB, ribotyping results produced 13 additional types in comparison with the other three methods. When used hierarchically with all other typing systems, a further five types were found among isolates from two patients. However, some of the differences observed as a result of ribotyping could have been due to subtle changes produced by mutation, lysogenisation or gene transposition. Since the method requires additional time, expense and technical expertise, it is likely to be useful only when answers to specific epidemiological problems are required or as an initial screen before using other methods of genetic analysis.

Abstract
Monocyte transformation by the v-myc oncogene has been used to study myelomonocytic tumor progression in vitro. Murine monocytes transformed by a recombinant retrovirus containing MC29 v-myc were found to exhibit a proliferative burst to day 28-40 post-infection. There-after growth slowed and cell number remained relatively static to day 80-90 post-infection. During both the proliferative and quiescent periods, the cells were dependent on the myelomonocytic growth factor CSF-1 for growth and viability. Analysis of this transformation revealed that the initial transformants were polyclonal, non-immortal, and non-tumorigenic in syngeneic mice. At day 80-90 post infection, a fresh round of cellular proliferation occurred and, in contrast to the initial burst, growth was sustained allowing the establishment of cell lines. These lines were found to be monoclonal, immortal, growth factor independent and, in certain cases, tumorigenic in syngeneic mice. Associated with the establishment of growth factor independent cell lines was the constitutive synthesis of the myelomonocytic growth factor, CSF-1. Proto-oncogene screening of the initial transformants and the cell lines also revealed the expression of c-raf and the CSF-1 receptor, c-fms. Our results indicate that, following transformation by v-myc, monocytes can progress in vitro to become growth factor independent and immortal and that both monocyte transformation and immortalization can be dissociated from tumorigenicity.

Abstract
Tumour-induced host-cell transformation has been addressed by examining human tumours in situ and following xenograft to nude mice. We have found evidence for the transformation of host stromal fibroblasts both in vivo and following the introduction of the tumours to in vitro culture. The in vitro culture of one such xenograft--derived from a human prostatic adenocarcinoma--resulted in the outgrowth of a transformed aneuploid mouse cell line. This transformed line was tumourigenic both in BALB/c nu/nu (nude) mice and in heterozygous nu/+mice, with the morphology of a spindle-cell sarcoma. The cell line did not express human isozymes or human histocompatibility antigens, nor were human chromosomes present. Moreover, human DNA sequences were not detected by human Alu repeat sequence element probing in the transformed cell line grown either in vitro or in vivo. The line contained retroviral long terminal repeat sequences but there was no evidence of proviral activation. These findings indicate that tumour cells may cause transformation of neighbouring stromal cells; that this transformation may proceed in the absence of DNA transfer or activation of endogenous proviruses; and that the means of this observed transformation may involve humoral factors elaborated by the tumour cells.

Abstract
Radionuclide micturating cystography (RMC) has been compared with the standard micturating cystourethrogram for detecting vesicoureteric reflux (VUR). Of 16 renal tracts with VUR radiologically classified as gross all had reflux demonstrated on RMC and in 15 of these the reflux reached the renal pelvis. Eight of the 12 renal tracts with moderate VUR and three of four with slight VUR were shown to reflux on RMC. RMC should prove valuable for following the course of patients with VUR treated surgically or conservatively because of the lower gonadal radiation dose resulting from this technique compared with the conventional radiological method.
