A Ce2MgMoO6 double perovskite decorated on a functionalized carbon nanofiber nanocomposite for quantification of ciprofloxacin in milk and honey samples: Density functional theory interpretation

In this study, a novel Ce2MgMoO6/CNFs (cerium magnesium molybdite double perovskite decorated on carbon nanofibers) nanocomposite was developed for selective and ultra-sensitive detection of ciprofloxacin (CFX). Physical characterization and analytical techniques were used to explore the morphology, structure, and electrocatalytic characteristics of the Ce2MgMoO6/CNFs nanocomposite. The sensor has a wide linear range (0.005-7.71 μM and 9.75-77.71 μM), a low limit of detection (0.012 μM), high sensitivity (0.807 μA μM-1 cm-2 nM), remarkable repeatability, and an appreciable storage stability. Here, we used density functional theory to investigate CFX and oxidized CFX as well as the locations of the energy levels and electron transfer sites. Furthermore, the Ce2MgMoO6/CNFs-modified electrode was successfully tested in food samples (milk and honey), indicating an acceptable response with a recovery percentage and relative standard deviation of less than 4%, which is comparable to that of GC-MS. Finally, the developed sensor exhibited high selectivity and stability for CFX detection.

NIR-Responsive Methotrexate-Modified Iron Selenide Nanorods for Synergistic Magnetic Hyperthermic, Photothermal, and Chemodynamic Therapy

Breast cancer is a malignant tumor with a high mortality rate among women. Therefore, it is necessary to develop novel therapies to effectively treat this disease. In this study, iron selenide nanorods (FeSe2 NRs) were designed for use in magnetic hyperthermic, photothermal, and chemodynamic therapy (MHT/PTT/CDT) for breast cancer. To illustrate their efficacy, FeSe2 NRs were modified with the chemotherapeutic agent methotrexate (MTX). MTX-modified FeSe2 (FeSe2-MTX) exhibited excellent controlled drug release properties. Fe2+ released from FeSe2 NRs induced the release of •OH from H2O2 via a Fenton/Fenton-like reaction, enhancing the efficacy of CDT. Under alternating magnetic field (AMF) stimulation and 808 nm laser irradiation, FeSe2-MTX exerted potent hyperthermic and photothermal effects by suppressing tumor growth in a breast cancer nude mouse model. In addition, FeSe2 NRs can be used for magnetic resonance imaging in vivo by incorporating their superparamagnetic characteristics into a single nanomaterial. Overall, we presented a novel technique for the precise delivery of functional nanosystems to tumors that can enhance the efficacy of breast cancer treatment.

Dual Z-scheme heterojunction Ce2Sn2O7/Ag3PO4/V@g-C3N4 for increased photocatalytic degradation of the food additive tartrazine, in the presence of persulfate: Kinetics, Toxicity, and Density functional theory studies

This study involved the synthesis of a Ce2Sn2O7/Ag3PO4/V@g-C3N4 composite through hydrothermal methods, followed by mechanical grinding. The resulting heterojunction exhibited improved catalytic activity under visible light by effectively separating electrons and holes (e-/h+). The degradation of Tartrazine (TTZ) reached 93.20% within 50 min by employing a ternary composite at a concentration of 10 mg/L, along with 6 mg/L of PS. The highest pseudo-first-order kinetic constant (0.1273 min-1 and R2 = 0.951) was observed in this system. The dual Z-scheme heterojunction is developed by Ce2Sn2O7, Ag3PO4, and V@g-C3N4, and it may increase the visible light absorption range while also accelerating charge carrier transfer and separation between catalysts. The analysis of the vulnerability positions and degradation pathways of TTZ involved the utilization of density functional theory (DFT) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to examine the intermediate products. Therefore, Ce2Sn2O7/Ag3PO4/V@g-C3N4 is an excellent ternary nanocomposite for the remediation of pollutants.

Synergistic activation of lamellar bismuth selenide anchored functionalized carbon nanofiber for detecting hazardous carbendazim in environmental water samples

Pesticides pollute natural water reservoirs through persistent accumulation. Therefore, their toxicity and degradability are serious issues. Carbendazim (CBZ) is a pesticide used against fungal infections in agricultural crops, and its overexploitation detrimentally affects aquatic ecosystems and organisms. It is necessary to design a logical, efficient, and field-deployable method for monitoring the amount of CBZ in environmental samples. Herein, a nano-engineered bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3)/functionalized carbon nanofiber (f-CNF) nanocomposite was utilized as an electrocatalyst to fabricate an electrochemical sensing platform for CBZ. Bi2Se3/f-CNF exhibited a substantial electroactive surface area, high electrocatalytic activity, and high conductivity owing to the synergistic interaction of Bi2Se3 with f-CNF. The structural chemical compositions and morphology of the Bi2Se3/f-CNF nanocomposite were confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Electrochemical analysis was carried out using cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The voltammetry and impedance experiments exposed that the Bi2Se3/f-CNF-modified GCE has attained adequate electrocatalytic function with amended features of electron transportation (Rct = 35.93 Ω) and improved reaction sites (0.082 cm2) accessible by CBZ moiety along with exemplary electrochemical stability (98.92%). The Bi2Se3/f-CNF nanocomposite exhibited higher sensitivity of 0.2974 μA μM-1cm-2 and a remarkably low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.04 nM at a broad linera range 0.001-100 μM. The practicability of the nanocomposite was tested in environmental (tap and pond water) samples, which supports excellent signal amplification with satisfactory recoveries. Hence, the Bi2Se3/f-CNF nanocomposite is a promising electrode modifier for detecting CBZ.

Near-infrared-driven upconversion nanoparticles with photocatalysts through water-splitting towards cancer treatment

Water splitting is promising, especially for energy and environmental applications; however, there are limited studies on the link between water splitting and cancer treatment. Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) can be used to convert near-infrared (NIR) light to ultraviolet (UV) or visible (Vis) light and have great potential for biomedical applications because of their profound penetration ability, theranostic approaches, low self-fluorescence background, reduced damage to biological tissue, and low toxicity. UCNPs with photocatalytic materials can enhance the photocatalytic activities that generate a shorter wavelength to increase the tissue penetration depth in the biological microenvironment under NIR light irradiation. Moreover, UCNPs with a photosensitizer can absorb NIR light and convert it into UV/vis light and emit upconverted photons, which excite the photoinitiator to create H2, O2, and/or OH˙ via water splitting processes when exposed to NIR irradiation. Therefore, combining UCNPs with intensified photocatalytic and photoinitiator materials may be a promising therapeutic approach for cancer treatment. This review provides a novel strategy for explaining the principles and mechanisms of UCNPs and NIR-driven UCNPs with photocatalytic materials through water splitting to achieve therapeutic outcomes for clinical applications. Moreover, the challenges and future perspectives of UCNP-based photocatalytic materials for water splitting for cancer treatment are discussed in this review.

Inorganic nanoparticles for photothermal treatment of cancer

In recent years, inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted increasing attention as potential theranostic agents in the field of oncology. Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a minimally invasive technique that uses nanoparticles to produce heat from light to kill cancer cells. PTT requires two essential elements: a photothermal agent (PTA) and near-infrared (NIR) radiation. The role of PTAs is to absorb NIR, which subsequently triggers hyperthermia within cancer cells. By raising the temperature in the tumor microenvironment (TME), PTT causes damage to the cancer cells. Nanoparticles (NPs) are instrumental in PTT given that they facilitate the passive and active targeting of the PTA to the TME, making them crucial for the effectiveness of the treatment. In addition, specific targeting can be achieved through their enhanced permeation and retention effect. Thus, owing to their significant advantages, such as altering the morphology and surface characteristics of nanocarriers comprised of PTA, NPs have been exploited to facilitate tumor regression significantly. This review highlights the properties of PTAs, the mechanism of PTT, and the results obtained from the improved curative efficacy of PTT by utilizing NPs platforms.

Gold nanoparticles decorated on MOF derived Cu5Zn8 hollow porous carbon nanocubes for magnetic resonance imaging guided tumor microenvironment-mediated synergistic chemodynamic and photothermal therapy

Combining chemodynamic therapy (CDT) with photothermal therapy (PTT) has developed as a promising approach for cancer treatment, as it enhances therapeutic efficiency through redox reactions and external laser induction. In this study, we designed metal organic framework (MOF) -derived Cu5Zn8/HPCNC through a carbonization process and decorated them with gold nanoparticles (Au@Cu5Zn8/HPCNC). The resulting nanoparticles were employed as a photothermal agent and Fenton catalyst. The Fenton reaction facilitated the conversation of Cu2+ to Cu+ through reaction with local H2O2, generating reactive hydroxyl radicals (·OH) with potent cytotoxic effects. To enhance the Fenton-like reaction and achieve combined therapy, laser irradiation of the Au@Cu5Zn8/HPCNC induced efficient photothermal therapy by generating localized heat. With a significantly increased absorption of Au@Cu5Zn8/HPCNC at 808 nm, the photothermal efficiency was determined to be 57.45 %. Additionally, Au@Cu5Zn8/HPCNC demonstrated potential as a contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of cancers. Furthermore, the synergistic combination of PTT and CDT significantly inhibited tumor growth. This integrated approach of PTT and CDT holds great promise for cancer therapy, offering enhanced CDT and modulation of the tumor microenvironment (TME), and opening new avenues in the fight against cancer.

The High Stability and Selectivity of Electrochemical Sensor Using Low-Cost Diamond Nanoparticles for the Detection of Anti-Cancer Drug Flutamide in Environmental Samples

In this study, a novel electrochemical sensor was created by fabricating a screen-printed carbon electrode with diamond nanoparticles (DNPs/SPCE). The successful development of the sensor enabled the specific detection of the anti-cancer drug flutamide (FLT). The DNPs/SPCE demonstrated excellent conductivity, remarkable electrocatalytic activity, and swift electron transfer, all of which contribute to the advantageous monitoring of FLT. These qualities are critical for monitoring FLT levels in environmental samples. Various structural and morphological characterization techniques were employed to validate the formation of the DNPs. Remarkably, the electrochemical sensor demonstrated a wide linear response range (0.025 to 606.65 μM). Additionally, it showed a low limit of detection (0.023 μM) and high sensitivity (0.403 μA μM-1 cm-2). Furthermore, the practicability of DNPs/SPCE can be successfully employed in FLT monitoring in water bodies (pond water and river water samples) with satisfactory recoveries.

Synergistic effect of photothermal and magnetic hyperthermia for in situ activation of Fenton reaction in tumor microenvironment for chemodynamic therapy

Traditional cancer treatments are ineffective and cause severe adverse effects. Thus, the development of chemodynamic therapy (CDT) has the potential for in situ catalysis of endogenous molecules into highly toxic species, which would then effectively destroy cancer cells. However, the shortage of high-performance nanomaterials hinders the broad clinical application of this approach. In present study, an effective therapeutic platform was developed using a simple hydrothermal method for the in-situ activation of the Fenton reaction within the tumor microenvironment (TME) to generate substantial quantities of •OH and ultimately destroy cancer cells, which could be further synergistically increased by photothermal therapy (PHT) and magnetic hyperthermia (MHT) aided by FeMoO4 nanorods (NRs). The produced FeMoO4 NRs were used as MHT/PHT and Fenton catalysts. The photothermal conversion efficiency of the FeMoO4 NRs was 31.75 %. In vitro and \ experiments demonstrated that the synergistic combination of MHT/PHT/CDT notably improved anticancer efficacy. This work reveals the significant efficacy of CDT aided by both photothermal and magnetic hyperthermia and offers a feasible strategy for the use of iron-based nanoparticles in the field of biomedical applications.

A sensitive sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor using nitrogen-doped graphene/metal-organic framework-derived CuMnCoOx and Au/MXene for the detection of breast cancer biomarker

In terms of cancer-related deaths among women, breast cancer (BC) is the most common. Clinically, human epidermal growth receptor 2 (HER2) is one of the most commonly used diagnostic biomarkers for facilitating BC cell proliferation and malignant growth. In this study, a disposable gold electrode (DGE) modified with gold nanoparticle-decorated Ti3C2Tx (Au/MXene) was utilized as a sensing platform to immobilize the capturing antibody (Ab1/Au/MXene). Subsequently, nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) with a metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived copper-manganese-cobalt oxide, tagged as NG/CuMnCoOx, was used as a probe to label the detection antibody (Ab2). A sandwich-type immunosensor (NG/CuMnCoOx/Ab2/HER2-ECD /Ab1/Au/MXene/DGE) was developed to quantify HER2-ECD. NG/CuMnCoOx enhances the conductivity, electrocatalytic active sites, and surface area to immobilize Ab2. In addition, Au/MXene facilitates electron transport and captures more Ab1 on its surface. Under optimal conditions, the resultant immunosensor displayed an excellent linear range of 0.0001 to 50.0 ng. mL-1. The detection limit was 0.757 pg·mL-1 with excellent selectivity, appreciable reproducibility, and high stability. Moreover, the applicability for determining HER2-ECD in human serum samples indicates its ability to monitor tumor markers clinically.

Enhancing wound healing and adhesion through dopamine-assisted gelatin-silica hybrid dressings

Gelatin, widely employed in hydrogel dressings, faces limitations when used in high fluid environments, hindering effective material adhesion to wound sites and subsequently reducing treatment efficacy. The rapid degradation of conventional hydrogels often results in breakdown before complete wound healing. Thus, there is a pressing need for the development of durable adhesive wound dressings. In this study, 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) was utilized as a coupling agent to create gelatin-silica hybrid (G-H) dressings through the sol-gel method. The coupling reaction established covalent bonds between gelatin and silica networks, enhancing structural stability. Dopamine (DP) was introduced to this hybrid (G-H-D) dressing to further boost adhesiveness. The efficacy of the dressings for wound management was assessed through in-vitro and in-vivo tests, along with ex-vivo bioadhesion testing on pig skin. Tensile bioadhesion tests demonstrated that the G-H-D material exhibited approximately 2.5 times greater adhesion to soft tissue in wet conditions compared to pure gelatin. Moreover, in-vitro and in-vivo wound healing experiments revealed a significant increase in wound healing rates. Consequently, this material shows promise as a viable option for use as a moist wound dressing.

2D/2D heterostructure Ni-Fe LDH/black phosphorus nanosheets with AuNP for noxious substance diphenylamine detection in food samples

In this study, gold nanoparticles decorated on nickel-iron layered double hydroxide with black phosphorus nanosheets (AuNP/Ni-Fe LDH/BPNSs) composite were prepared using a stirring method. Analyte tracing is required for developing viable sensors. The AuNP/Ni-Fe LDH/BPNSs composite exhibited a large specific surface area, high conductivity, high electrocatalytic activity, and rapid electron transfer. These properties play a vital role in monitoring diphenylamine (DPA) in food samples. The formation of the AuNP/Ni-Fe LDH/BPNSs composite was confirmed using various structural and morphological characterization techniques. The electroanalytical character of the AuNP/Ni-Fe LDH/BPNSs composite was evaluated using voltammetry. Interestingly, the AuNP/Ni-Fe LDH/BPNSs showed a wide linear range of 0.0125-1003.82 μM and a detection limit of 4.63 nM with a sensitivity of 0.399 µA µM-1 cm-2. The constructed sensor shows considerable selectivity, stability, repeatability, and reproducibility, and the practicability of DPA was monitored in the apples, sweet tomatoes, pears, and grapes with satisfactory recoveries.

Poly(methyl methacrylate) in Orthopedics: Strategies, Challenges, and Prospects in Bone Tissue Engineering

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is widely used in orthopedic applications, including bone cement in total joint replacement surgery, bone fillers, and bone substitutes due to its affordability, biocompatibility, and processability. However, the bone regeneration efficiency of PMMA is limited because of its lack of bioactivity, poor osseointegration, and non-degradability. The use of bone cement also has disadvantages such as methyl methacrylate (MMA) release and high exothermic temperature during the polymerization of PMMA, which can cause thermal necrosis. To address these problems, various strategies have been adopted, such as surface modification techniques and the incorporation of various bioactive agents and biopolymers into PMMA. In this review, the physicochemical properties and synthesis methods of PMMA are discussed, with a special focus on the utilization of various PMMA composites in bone tissue engineering. Additionally, the challenges involved in incorporating PMMA into regenerative medicine are discussed with suitable research findings with the intention of providing insightful advice to support its successful clinical applications.

Gender differences in oral health among prisoners: a cross-sectional study from Taiwan

BACKGROUND

The prevalence of oral diseases among Taiwanese prisoners has rarely been investigated. This study aimed to estimate the gender-specific prevalence of oral disease in a sample of Taiwanese prisoners.

METHODS

We included 83,048 participants from the National Health Insurance (NHI) Program. Outcomes were measured using the clinical version of the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9-CM). For prevalence, we provide absolute values and percentages. We also performed a χ2 test to assess sex and age group differences in the percentage of disease in the oral cavity, salivary glands, and jaw.

RESULTS

The prevalence rate of oral diseases was 25.90%, which was higher than that of the general population. The prevalence of oral diseases in female prisoners was higher than that in male prisoners (p < 0.001), and the prevalence of oral diseases in prisoners aged ≤ 40 was higher than that of prisoners aged > 40. Among all cases of diagnosed oral diseases, the top three diseases were dental hard tissue diseases (13.28%), other cellulitis and abscesses (9.79%), and pruritus and related conditions (2.88%), respectively. The prevalence of various oral diseases in female prisoners was significantly higher than that in male prisoners.

CONCLUSION

Oral disease is common among Taiwanese prisoners. Female prisoners had a higher prevalence of oral, salivary gland, and jaw diseases than male prisoners. Therefore, early prevention and appropriate treatment are required and also a need for gender-specific oral disease products given the differences in the prevalence of oral disease among male and female prisoners.

Overcoming the yield challenge of mussel foot proteins: Enhancing adhesion through metal ion-incorporated nanoparticles

Mussel foot proteins (MFPs) hold tremendous potential for various fields, but their low natural production yield presents a significant challenge for practical use. This study aims to explore possible solutions to overcome this limitation. While advanced recombinant technology can improve production efficiency, the resulting proteins lack the crucial chemical signature of mussel adhesion, 3,4-Dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA). Recent studies have shown that adhesives in nanoparticle form offer higher adhesion on solid surfaces, making them a promising alternative. Moreover, metal ions can enhance the cohesive forces between MFPs, leading to improved adhesion. In this study, we prepared MFP nanoparticles via spray-drying and tested their adhesion performance on surfaces with varying hydrophobicity using a universal testing machine. Our findings confirmed that MFP nanoparticles exhibit stronger adhesive performance than native MFPs, with metal ions contributing to even more robust adhesion. This study offers valuable insights into the adhesive behavior of MFPs in nanoparticle form with metal ions, presenting a potential solution to the challenge of low natural production yield of MFPs and the possibility of enhancing their adhesion properties in bio-adhesive materials.

Engineering Cathode-Electrolyte Interface of High-Voltage Spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 via Halide Solid-State Electrolyte Coating

The high-voltage spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) cathode material with high energy density, low cost, and excellent rate capability has grabbed the attention of the field. However, a high-voltage platform at 4.7 V causes severe oxidative side reactions when in contact with the organic electrolyte, leading to poor electrochemical performance. Furthermore, the contact between the liquid electrolyte and LNMO leads to Mn dissolution during cycles. In this work, we applied the sol-gel method to prepare Li3InCl6-coated LNMO (LIC@LNMO) to address the mentioned problems of LNMO. By introducing a protective layer of halide-type solid-state electrolyte on LNMO, we can prevent direct contact between LNMO and electrolyte while maintaining good ionic conductivity. Thus, we could demonstrate that 5 wt % LIC@LNMO exhibited a good cycle performance with a Coulombic efficiency of 99% and a capacity retention of 80% after the 230th cycle at the 230th cycle at 1C at room temperature.

Recent Advances in Rechargeable Metal-CO2 Batteries with Nonaqueous Electrolytes

This review article discusses the recent advances in rechargeable metal-CO2 batteries (MCBs), which include the Li, Na, K, Mg, and Al-based rechargeable CO2 batteries, mainly with nonaqueous electrolytes. MCBs capture CO2 during discharge by the CO2 reduction reaction and release it during charging by the CO2 evolution reaction. MCBs are recognized as one of the most sophisticated artificial modes for CO2 fixation by electrical energy generation. However, extensive research and substantial developments are required before MCBs appear as reliable, sustainable, and safe energy storage systems. The rechargeable MCBs suffer from the hindrances like huge charging-discharging overpotential and poor cyclability due to the incomplete decomposition and piling of the insulating and chemically stable compounds, mainly carbonates. Efficient cathode catalysts and a suitable architectural design of the cathode catalysts are essential to address this issue. Besides, electrolytes also play a vital role in safety, ionic transportation, stable solid-electrolyte interphase formation, gas dissolution, leakage, corrosion, operational voltage window, etc. The highly electrochemically active metals like Li, Na, and K anodes severely suffer from parasitic reactions and dendrite formation. Recent research works on the aforementioned secondary MCBs have been categorically reviewed here, portraying the latest findings on the key aspects governing secondary MCB performances.

Synthesis of Methotrexate-Loaded Dumbbell-Shaped Titanium Dioxide/Gold Nanorods Coated with Mesoporous Silica and Decorated with Upconversion Nanoparticles for Near-Infrared-Driven Trimodal Cancer Treatment

This study prepared dumbbell-shaped titanium dioxide (TiO₂)/gold nanorods (AuNRs) coated with mesoporous silica shells (mS) (AuNRs-TiO₂@mS). Methotrexate (MTX) was further loaded into the AuNRs-TiO₂@mS, and then upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were decorated to form AuNRs-TiO₂@mS-MTX: UCNP nanocomposites. TiO₂ is used as an intense photosensitizer (PS) to produce cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to photodynamic therapy (PDT). Concurrently, AuNRs exhibited intense photothermal therapy (PTT) effects and photothermal conversion efficiency. In vitro results suggested that these nanocomposites can kill oral cancer cells (HSC-3) without toxicity through irradiation of NIR laser, owing to the synergistic effect. The in vivo studies indicated that these nanocomposites exhibited excellent antitumor effects through synergistic PDT/PTT/chemotherapy under a near-infrared (NIR) 808 nm laser irradiation. Thus, these AuNRs-TiO₂@mS: UCNP nanocomposites have great potential to undergo deep tissue penetration with enhanced synergistic effects through NIR-triggered light for cancer treatment.

Highly responsive and sensitive non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor for the detection of β-NADH in food, environmental and biological samples using AuNP on polydopamine/titanium carbide composite

In this study, a polydopamine/titanium carbide adorned with gold nanoparticles (Au@PDA/TiC) composite was prepared by a simple stirring technique and it was used for the dual-technique detection of β-Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH). The Au@PDA/TiC-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) oxidized NADH at a very low oxidation potential of approximately 0.60 V vs Ag/AgCl in pH = 7.0 (0.1 M PBS) via the transfer of two electrons and one proton (from NADH to NAD⁺). Based on the (i-t) amperometry mode, NADH can be quantified with a linear range of 0.018-674 μM and LOD of 0.0062 µM. In addition to the DPV mode, the electrochemical sensor had a linearity of 5-450 µM with a LOD of 3.17 µM. The developed sensor exhibited remarkable analytical performances concerning high sensitivity, electrocatalytic activity, low detection limit, wide linearity, appreciable specificity, repeatability, stability, reproducibility, and adequate recovery results in food, environmental and biological samples.

Nano-Diamond-Enhanced Integrated Response of a Surface Plasmon Resonance Biosensor

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensing is a real-time detection technique for measuring biomolecular interactions on gold surfaces. This study presents a novel approach using nano-diamonds (NDs) on a gold nano-slit array to obtain an extraordinary transmission (EOT) spectrum for SPR biosensing. We used anti-bovine serum albumin (anti-BSA) to bind NDs for chemical attachment to a gold nano-slit array. The covalently bound NDs shifted the EOT response depending on their concentration. The number of ND-labeled molecules attached to the gold nano-slit array was quantified from the change in the EOT spectrum. The concentration of anti-BSA in the 35 nm ND solution sample was much lower than that in the anti-BSA-only sample (approximately 1/100). With the help of 35 nm NDs, we were able to use a lower concentration of analyte in this system and obtained better signal responses. The responses of anti-BSA-linked NDs had approximately a 10-fold signal enhancement compared to anti-BSA alone. This approach has the advantage of a simple setup and microscale detection area, which makes it suitable for applications in biochip technology.

Lanthanum nickelate spheres embedded acid functionalized carbon nanofiber composite: An efficient electrocatalyst for electrochemical detection of food additive vanillin

Contemporary food marketing is ruined by flavor enhancers rather than emphasizing the nutritional value of food. Vanillin is an overexploited flavor enhancer added to food items, thereby necessitating its detection. In this study, an electrochemical sensor was designed using a modified electrode made up of La₂NiO₄ functionalized carbon nanofiber (f-CNF) to effectively detect vanillin in food samples. To confirm the successful formation of La₂NiO₄/f-CNF, structural and morphological studies were performed using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Further electrochemical analysis was performed using cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry techniques, which resulted in high sensitivity (0.2899 µA·μM^-1·cm^-2) and low limit of detection (LOD) (6 nM). This modified electrode material was tested in food samples, which showed an excellent response with recovery percentage and is a promising electrocatalyst for vanillin detection.

Effect of far-infrared radiation on inhibition of colonies on packaging during storage of sterilised surgical instruments

The sterilisation of surgical instruments is a major factor in infection control in the operating room (OR). All items used in the OR must be sterile for patient safety. Therefore, the present study evaluated the effect of far-infrared radiation (FIR) on the inhibition of colonies on packaging surface during the long-term storage of sterilised surgical instruments. From September 2021 to July 2022, 68.2% of 85 packages without FIR treatment showed microbial growth after incubation at 35 °C for 30 days and at room temperature for 5 days. A total of 34 bacterial species were identified, with the number of colonies increasing over time. In total, 130 colony-forming units were observed. The main microorganisms detected were Staphylococcus spp. (35%) and Bacillus spp. (21%) , Kocuria marina and Lactobacillus spp. (14%), and mould (5%). No colonies were found in 72 packages treated with FIR in the OR. Even after sterilisation, microbial growth can occur due to movement of the packages by staff, sweeping of floors, lack of high-efficiency particulate air filtration, high humidity, and inadequate hand hygiene. Thus, safe and simple far-infrared devices that allow continuous disinfection for storage spaces, as well as temperature and humidity control, help to reduce microorganisms in the OR.

Angiopep-2-conjugated FeTi@Au core-shell nanoparticles for tumor targeted dual-mode magnetic resonance imaging and hyperthermic glioma therapy

Herein, we fabricated gold surface-coated iron titanium core-shell (FeTi@Au) nanoparticles (NPs) with conjugation of angiopep-2 (ANG) (FeTi@Au-ANG) NPs for targeted delivery and improved NPs penetration by receptor-mediated endocytosis to achieve hyperthermic treatment of gliomas. The synthesized "core-shell" FeTi@Au-ANG NPs exhibited spherical in shape with around 16 nm particle size and increased temperature upon alternating magnetic field (AMF) stimulation, rendering them effective for localized hyperthermic therapy of cancer cells. Effective targeted delivery of FeTi@Au-ANG NPs was demonstrated in vitro by improved transport and cellular uptake, and increased apoptosis in glioma cells (C6) compared with normal fibroblast cells (L929). FeTi@Au-ANG NPs exhibited higher deposition in brain tissues and a superior therapeutic effect in an orthotopic intracranial xenograft mouse model. Taken together, our data indicate that FeTi@Au-ANG NPs hold significant promise as a targeted delivery strategy for glioma treatment using hyperthermia.

Standardized rate of hospitalization for violent injuries among different generations in counties and cities in Taiwan from 2000 to 2015

This study aimed to understand the distribution of the standardized rate of hospitalization for violent injuries in counties and cities in Taiwan. The ICD-9 diagnosis code N-codes 995.5 (abused child) and 995.8 (abused adult) or E-code E960-E969 (homicide and intentional injury by others) were defined as research cases. The study analyzed the standardized medical treatment rate of children and adolescents aged 0 to 17, adults aged 18 to 64, and older adults over 65 years old suffering from violence for the first time. During the 15-year period, the counties and cities with the highest rate of medical treatment for violent injuries among children (unit: per 105 people) were Pingtung County (33.1 males, 22.9 females), Lienchiang County (8.8 males, 9.8 females), and New Taipei City (8.2 males, 8.8 females). For adults, Pingtung County (73.2 males, 36.8 females), New Taipei City (26.0 males, 14.3 females), and Yunlin County (19.7 males, 7.7 females) registered the highest rates. For older adults, Pingtung County (33.6 persons), New Taipei City (12.5 persons), Yun Lin County (11.2 persons), and Taichung City (9.2 persons) registered the highest rates. The highest rates of older female adults receiving treatment were recorded in Pingtung County (15.1 persons), Yunlin County (9.0 persons), Taichung City (5.5 persons), and New Taipei City (5.1 persons). With the Poisson regression model, the relative risk ratio of seeking medical care owing to violence in Pingtung County (reference: Taipei City) was 25.1 times for children, 20.1 times for adults, and 11.7 times for older adults. The counties and cities with higher rates of violent medical treatment for adults and older adults during the 15-year period were Pingtung County, New Taipei City, and Yunlin County. For children and adolescents, Pingtung County, Lienchiang County, and New Taipei City recorded the highest rates. Pingtung County had the highest risk of sexual violence. These results may be related to the local industrial structure, demographic composition, and other characteristics explained in the text.

Battery Performance Amelioration by Introducing a Conducive Mixed Electrolyte in Rechargeable Mg-O2 Batteries

With magnesium being a cost-effective anode metal compared to the other conventional Li-based anodes in the energy market, it could be a capable source of energy storage. However, Mg-O2 batteries have struggled its way to overcome the poor cycling stability and sluggish reaction kinetics. Therefore, Ru metallic nanoparticles on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were introduced as a cathode for Mg-O2 batteries, which are known for their inherent electronic properties, large surface area, and increased crystallinity to favor remarkable oxygen reduction reactions and oxygen evolution reactions (ORR and OER). Also, we deployed a first-of-its-kind, conducive mixed electrolyte (CME) (2 M Mg(NO3)2:1 M Mg(TFSI)2/diglyme). Hence, this synergistic incorporation of CME-based Ru/CNT Mg-O2 batteries could unleash long cycle life with low overpotential, excellent reversibility, and high ionic conductivity and also reduces the intrinsic corrosion behavior of Mg anodes. Correspondingly, this novel amalgamation of CME with Ru/CNT cathode has displayed superior cyclic stability of 65 cycles and a maximum discharge potential of 25 793 mAh g-1 with a small overvoltage plateau of 1.4 V, noticeably subjugating the findings of conventional single electrolyte (CSE) (1 M Mg(TFSI)2/diglyme). This CME-based Ru/CNT Mg-O2 battery design could have a significant outcome as a future battery technology.

A non-enzymatic, biocompatible electrochemical sensor based on N-doped graphene quantum dot-incorporated SnS2 nanosheets for in situ monitoring of hydrogen peroxide in breast cancer cells

The current study reports the design and construction of enzyme-free sensor using N-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs)-decorated tin sulfide nanosheets (SnS₂) for in situ monitoring of H₂O₂ secreted by human breast cancer cells. N-GQDs nanoparticles having a size of less than 1 nm were incorporated into SnS₂ nanosheets to form an N-GQDs@SnS₂ nanocomposite using a simple hydrothermal approach. The resulting hybrid material was an excellent electrocatalyst for the reduction of H₂O₂, owing to the combined properties of highly conductive N-GQDs and SnS₂ nanosheets. The N-GQDs@SnS₂-based sensing platform demonstrated substantial sensing ability, with a detection range of 0.0125-1128 µM and a limit of detection of 0.009 µM (S/N = 3). The sensing performance of N-GQDs@SnS₂ was highly stable, selective, and reproducible. The practical application of the N-GQDs@SnS₂ sensor was successfully demonstrated by quantifying H₂O₂ in lens cleaner, human urine, and saliva samples. Finally, the N-GQDs@SnS₂ electrode was successfully applied for the real-time monitoring of H₂O₂ released from breast cancer cells and mouse fibroblasts. This study paves the way to designing efficient non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors for various biomolecule detection using a simple method.

Theranostic doxorubicin encapsulated FeAu alloy@metal-organic framework nanostructures enable magnetic hyperthermia and medical imaging in oral carcinoma

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as attractive candidates in cancer theranostics due to their ability to envelop magnetic nanoparticles, resulting in reduced cytotoxicity and high porosity, enabling chemodrug encapsulation. Here, FeAu alloy nanoparticles (FeAu NPs) are synthesized and coated with MIL-100(Fe) MOFs to fabricate FeAu@MOF nanostructures. We encapsulated Doxorubicin within the nanostructures and evaluated the suitability of this platform for medical imaging and cancer theranostics. FeAu@MOF nanostructures (FeAu@MIL-100(Fe)) exhibited superparamagnetism, magnetic hyperthermia behavior and displayed DOX encapsulation and release efficiency of 69.95 % and 97.19 %, respectively, when stimulated with alternating magnetic field (AMF). In-vitro experiments showed that AMF-induced hyperthermia resulted in 90 % HSC-3 oral squamous carcinoma cell death, indicating application in cancer theranostics. Finally, in an in-vivo mouse model, FeAu@MOF nanostructures improved image contrast, reduced tumor volume by 30-fold and tumor weight by 10-fold, which translated to enhancement in cumulative survival, highlighting the prospect of this platform for oral cancer treatment.

Bimetallic Cu5Zn8 alloy-embedded hollow porous carbon nanocubes derived from 3D-Cu/ZIF-8 as efficient electrocatalysts for environmental pollutant detection in water bodies

Excessive use of nitrofurantoin (NFT) and its residues can be harmful to the ecosystem, and to mitigate this, rapid and cost-effective detection of NFT in water bodies is needed. In this regard, we prepared a three-dimensional (3D) copper-zeolitic imidazole framework (Cu/ZIF-8)-derived bimetallic Cu₅Zn₈ alloy-embedded hollow porous carbon nanocubes (Cu₅Zn₈/HPCNC) for electrochemical detection of NFT. The resultant material is characterized using suitable spectrophotometry and voltammetry methods. Cu₅Zn₈/HPCNC is an effective electrocatalyst with high electrical conductivity and a fast electron transfer rate. It also has more catalytic active sites for improved electrochemical reduction of NFT. Fabricated Cu₅Zn₈/HPCNC-modified screen-printed electrode (SPE) for NFT reduction have a wide linear range with a low detection limit, and high sensitivity (15.343 μA μМ^-1 cm^-2), appreciable anti-interference ability with related nitro compounds, storage stability, reproducibility, and repeatability. Also, the practicability of Cu₅Zn₈/HPCNC/SPE can be successfully employed in NFT monitoring in water bodies (drinking water, pond water, river water, and tap water) with satisfactory recoveries.

Sonochemical construction of hierarchical strontium doped lanthanum trisulfide electrocatalyst: An efficient electrode for highly sensitive detection of ecological pollutant in food and water

Herbicides are used constantly in agriculture to enhance productivity across the globe. This herbicide monitoring requires utmost importance since its high dose leads to ecological imbalance and a negative impact on the environment. Moreover, a quantification of toxic herbicide is one of the important problems in the food analysis. In this work, deals with the development of a simple, and facile one-pot sonochemical synthesis of strontium doped La₂S₃ (Sr@La₂S₃). Morphological and structural characterization confirms the doping of Sr@La₂S₃ to generate a hierarchical layered structure. The electrochemical performance of modified with rotating disk electrode (RDE) using Sr@La₂S₃ composite is high, compared to La₂S₃ and bare electrodes towards the quantitative detection of mesotrione (MTO) in phosphate buffer. Sr@La₂S₃/RDE showed good sensitivity for MTO detection and it exhibit a range of 0.01-307.01 μM and limit of detection of 2.4 nM. Besides, the selectivity of fabricated electrode is high as it can electrochemically reduce MTO particularly, even in the presence of other chemicals, biological molecules and inorganic ions. The repeatability of MTO detection is high even after 30 days with a lower RSD values. Hence, simple fabrication of Sr@La₂S₃/RDE could be a novel electrode for the sensitive, selective, and reproducible determination of herbicides in real-time applications.

Obese patients experience more severe OSA than non-obese patients

To investigate whether previous exposure to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) increases the risk of obesity in obese and nonobese patients. We identified 24,363 obese patients diagnosed between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2015, in the Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database (LHID) 2005 National Health Insurance Research Database; 97,452 sex-, age- and index date-matched nonobese patients were identified from the same database. This study is based on the ninth edition of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyze the previous exposure of obese patients to OSA. P < .05 was considered significant. The average age of 121,815 patients was 44.30 ± 15.64 years old; 42.77% were males, and 57.23% were females. Obese patients were more likely to be exposed to OSA than nonobese patients (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.927, 95% CI = 1.878-4.194, P < .001), and the more recent the exposure period was, the more severely obese the patient, with a dose-response effect (OSA exposure < 1 year, AOR = 3.895; OSA exposure 1 year, <5 years, AOR = 2.933; OSA exposure 5 years, AOR = 2.486). The probability of OSA exposure in obese patients was 2.927 times that in nonobese patients, and the longer the exposure duration was, the more severe the obesity situation, with a dose-response effect (OSA exposure < 1 year, AOR = 2.251; OSA exposure 1 year, <5 years, AOR = 2.986; OSA exposure 5 years, AOR = 3.452). The risk of obesity in subjects with OSA was found to be significantly higher in this nested case-control study; in particular, a longer exposure to OSA was associated with a higher likelihood of obesity, with a dose-response effect.

Angiopep-2-decorated titanium-alloy core-shell magnetic nanoparticles for nanotheranostics and medical imaging

The poor permeability of therapeutic agents across the blood-brain barrier and blood-tumor barrier is a significant barrier in glioma treatment. Low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein (LRP-1) recognises a dual-targeting ligand, angiopep-2, which is overexpressed in the BBB and gliomas. Here, we have synthesized Ti@FeAu core-shell nanoparticles conjugated with angiopep-2 (Ti@FeAu-Ang nanoparticles) to target glioma cells and treat brain cancer via hyperthermia produced by a magnetic field. Our results confirmed that Ti@FeAu core-shell nanoparticles were superparamagnetic, improved the negative contrast effect on glioma, and exhibited a temperature elevation of 12° C upon magnetic stimulation, which implies potential applications in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and hyperthermia-based cancer therapy. Angiopep-2-decorated nanoparticles exhibited higher cellular uptake by C6 glioma cells than by L929 fibroblasts, demonstrating selective glioma targeting and improved cytotoxicity up to 85% owing to hyperthermia produced by a magnetic field. The in vivo findings demonstrated that intravenous injection of Ti@FeAu-Ang nanoparticles exhibited a 10-fold decrement in tumor volume compared to the control group. Furthermore, immunohistochemical analysis of Ti@FeAu-Ang nanoparticles showed that coagulative necrosis of tumor tissues and preliminary safety analysis highlighted no toxicity to the haematological system, after Ti@FeAu-Ang nanoparticle-induced hyperthermia treatment.

A Sandwich-Type Electrochemical Immunosensor for Insulin Detection Based on Au-Adhered Cu5 Zn8 Hollow Porous Carbon Nanocubes and AuNP Deposited Nitrogen-Doped Holey Graphene

Rapid, accurate, and sensitive insulin detection is crucial for managing and treating diabetes. A simple sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor is engineered using gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-adhered metal-organic framework-derived copper-zinc hollow porous carbon nanocubes (Au@Cu₅ Zn₈ /HPCNC) and AuNP-deposited nitrogen-doped holey graphene (NHG) are used as a dual functional label and sensing platform. The results show that identical morphology and size of Au@Cu₅ Zn₈ /HPCNC enhance the electrocatalytic active sites, conductivity, and surface area to immobilize the detection antibodies (Ab₂ ). In addition, AuNP/NHG has the requisite biocompatibility and electrical conductivity, which facilitates electron transport and increases the surface area of the capture antibody (Ab₁ ). Significantly, Cu₅ Zn₈ /HPCNC exhibits necessary catalytic activity and sensitivity for the electrochemical reduction of H₂ O₂ using (i-t) amperometry and improves the electrochemical response in differential pulse voltammetry. Under optimal conditions, the immunosensor for insulin demonstrates a wide linear range with a low detection limit and viable specificity, stability, and reproducibility. The platform's practicality is evaluated by detecting insulin in human serum samples. All these characteristics indicate that the Cu₅ Zn₈ /HPCNC-based biosensing strategy may be used for the point-of-care assay of diverse biomarkers.

Irradiation-Induced Synthesis of Ag/ZnO Nanostructures as Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Sensors for Sensitive Detection of the Pesticide Acetamiprid

Detecting pesticides using techniques that involve simple fabrication methods and conducting the detection at very low levels are challenging. Herein, we report the detection of acetamiprid at the quadrillionth level using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The SERS chip comprises Ag nanoparticles deposited on a tetrapod structure of ZnO coated onto indium tin oxide glass (denoted as Ag@ZnO-ITO). Controlled Ag decoration of ZnO occurs via irradiation-induced synthesis. The morphology of the surface plays a significant role in achieving an enhanced SERS performance for acetamiprid detection. 4,4'-Dipyridyl (DPY) is used to investigate synthesis conditions for the chip, leading to an optimal irradiation time of 60 min. Furthermore, the enhancement factor for acetamiprid on Ag@ZnO-ITO is higher than 10⁷. These results demonstrate that SERS sensors have the potential for practical use in acetamiprid detection.

Tuning Surface Plasmonic Resonance and Surface Wettability of Au/CrN Films Using Nitrogen-Containing Gas

The surface plasmonic resonance, surface wettability, and related mechanical nanohardness and of face-centered-cubic (fcc) chromium nitride (CrN) films have been successfully manipulated via the simple method of tuning nitrogen-containing gas with different nitrogen-to-argon ratios, varying from 3.5 (N35), to 4.0 (N40), to 4.5 (N45), which is directly proportional to argon. All of the obtained CrN films showed that the surface wettability was due to hydrophilicity. All of the characteristics were mainly confirmed and explained by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, including plan-view and cross-section SEM images, with calculations of the average grain size performed via histograms accompanied by different preferred grain orientations. In the present work, not only the surface plasmonic resonance, but also the surface wettability and the related mechanical nanohardness of CrN films were found to be tunable via a simple method of introducing adjustable nitrogen-reactive-containing gas during the deposition process, while the authors suggest that the crystal orientation transition from the (111) to the (200) crystalline plane changed significantly with the nitrogen-containing gas. So the transition of the preferred orientation of CrN’s cubic close-packed from (111) to (200) varied at this composite, caused and found by the nitrogen-containing gas, which can be tuned by the nitrogen-to-argon ratio. The surface plasmonic resonance and photoluminescence quenching effects were coupled photon and electron oscillations, which could be observed, and which existed at the interface between the CrN and Au metals in the designed heterostructures.

Males with low income and catastrophic illnesses are important risk factors for in-hospital homicide-related deaths in Taiwan from 1998 to 2015: A cross-sectional study

This study aimed to investigate not only the differences in in-hospital deaths between male and female homicides in Taiwan from 1998 to 2015, but also the epidemiological characteristics and long-term trend analysis. We collected data on 76,125 hospitalized patients injured in attempted homicides from January 1, 1998, to December 31, 2015, from the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD), identifying 59,161 male and 16,694 female patients. Age, gender, and index date match. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyze the risks of gender differences in terms of homicide. The death risk of male patients was 1.673 times that of female patients and the mortality risk of low-income male patients was 3.447 times greater than that of non-low-income male patients. Moreover, the in-hospital death risk was 23.584 and 5.064 times higher for male and female patients with catastrophic illness, respectively, compared to patients with noncritical diseases. There is a higher trend of male than female patients hospitalized after an attempted homicide. Gender differences are significantly related to homicide, with males having a higher risk of death risk from homicide than females, especially in terms of low-income and catastrophic illness.

Human Skin-Inspired Electrospun Patterned Robust Strain-Insensitive Pressure Sensors and Wearable Flexible Light-Emitting Diodes

Wearable skin-inspired electronic skins present remarkable outgrowth in recent years because their promising comfort device integration, lightweight, and mechanically robust durable characteristics led to significant progresses in wearable sensors and optoelectronics. Wearable electronic devices demand real-time applicability and factors such as complex fabrication steps, manufacturing cost, and reliable and durable performances, severely limiting the utilization. Herein, we nominate a scalable solution-processable electrospun patterned candidate capable of forming ultralong mechanically robust nano-microdimensional fibers with higher uniformity. Nanofibrous patterned substrates present surface energy and silver nanoparticle crystallization shifts, contributing to strain-sensitive and -insensitive conductive electrodes (10 000 cycles of 50% strain). Synergistic robust stress releasing and durable electromechanical behavior engenders stretchable durable health sensors, strain-insensitive pressure sensors (sensitivity of ∼83 kPa^-1 and 5000 durable cycles), robust alternating current electroluminescent displays, and flexible organic light-emitting diodes (20% improved luminescence and 300 flex endurance of 2 mm bend radius).

MOF-Derived Cu-BTC Nanowire-Embedded 2D Leaf-like Structured ZIF Composite-Based Aptamer Sensors for Real-Time In Vivo Insulin Monitoring

Insulin, which is a hormone produced by the β-cells of the pancreas, regulates the glucose levels in the blood and can transport glucose into cells to produce glycogen or triglycerides. Insulin deficiency can lead to hyperglycemia and diabetes. Therefore, insulin detection is critical in clinical diagnosis. In this study, disposable Au electrodes were modified with copper(II) benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (Cu-BTC)/leaf-like zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-L) for insulin detection. The aptamers are easily immobilized on the Cu-BTC/ZIF-L composite by physical adsorption and facilitated the specific interaction between aptamers and insulin. The Cu-BTC/ZIF-L composite-based aptasensor presented a wide linear insulin detection range (0.1 pM to 5 μM) and a low limit of detection of 0.027 pM. In addition, the aptasensor displayed high specificity, good reproducibility and stability, and favorable practicability in human serum samples. For the in vivo tests, Cu-BTC/ZIF-L composite-modified electrodes were implanted in non-diabetic and diabetic mice, and insulin was quantified using electrochemical and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay methods.

Preparation of gamma poly-glutamic acid/hydroxyapatite/collagen composite as the 3D-printing scaffold for bone tissue engineering

Background

All types of movements involve the role of articular cartilage and bones. The presence of cartilage enables bones to move over one another smoothly. However, repetitive microtrauma and ischemia as well as genetic effects can cause an osteochondral lesion. Numerous treatment methods such as microfracture surgergy, autograft, and allograft, have been used, however, it possesses treatment challenges including prolonged recovery time after surgery and poses a financial burden on patients. Nowadays, various tissue engineering approaches have been developed to repair bone and osteochondral defects using biomaterial implants to induce the regeneration of stem cells. 

Methods

In this study, a collagen (Col)/γ-polyglutamate acid (PGA)/hydroxyapatite (HA) composite scaffold was fabricated using a 3D printing technique. A Col/γ-PGA/HA 2D membrane was also fabricated for comparison. The scaffolds (four layers) were designed with the size of 8 mm in diameter and 1.2 mm in thickness. The first layer was HA/γ-PGA and the second to fourth layers were Col/γ-PGA. In addition, a 2D membrane was constructed from hydroxyapatite/γ-PGA and collagen/γ-PGA with a ratio of 1:3. The biocompatibility property and degradation activity were investigated for both scaffold and membrane samples. Rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs) and human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs) were cultured on the samples and were tested in-vitro to evaluate cell attachment, proliferation, and differentiation. In-vivo experiments were performed in the rat and nude mice models.

Results

In-vitro and in-vivo results show that the developed scaffold is of well biodegradation and biocompatible properties, and the Col-HA scaffold enhances the mechanical properties for osteochondrogenesis in both in-vitro and animal trials.

Conclusions

The composite would be a great biomaterial application for bone and osteochondral regeneration.

Self-templating hydrothermal synthesis of carbon-confined double-shelled Ni/NiO hollow microspheres for diphenylamine detection in fruit samples

Toxic substances, such as heavy metals, toxins, pesticides, pathogens, and veterinary drug residues in food are hazardous to consumer health. The variety and quantity of food consumption have increased owing to developments in the agricultural and food industries. Food safety has a substantial socioeconomic impact, and an increasing number of consumers have become aware of its importance. Therefore, simple and cost-effective analytical methods are required to quantify the safety of preservatives. Herein, we report an electrochemical method using double-shelled carbon-confined Ni/NiO (C@Ni/NiO) hollow microspheres to detect diphenylamine (DPA). The microspheres were synthesized by a self-templating hydrothermal method followed by calcination. The hydrothermal temperature and precursor ratio were optimized systematically to prepare double-shelled C@Ni/NiO hollow microspheres. The excellent electrocatalytic activity and electron transport properties of a C@Ni/NiO-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) were exploited in the electrochemical oxidation of DPA. Interestingly, the engineered C@Ni/NiO/GCE has a wide dynamic linear range (0.02-473 μM) and a DPA detection limit of 0.007 μM. In addition, the DPA sensor exhibited good selectivity, reproducibility, repeatability, and stability. The practical feasibility of the DPA sensor was evaluated in fruit samples (sweet tomatoes, apples, and red grapes), with considerable recovery.

Angiogenesis, Osseointegration, and Antibacterial Applications of Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Coatings Incorporated With Silver/Strontium Containing Mesoporous Bioactive Glass on 316L Stainless Steel

The main causes for failure in implant surgery are prolonged exposure of implants or wound and tissue ischemia. Bacterial infection caused by the surrounding medical environment and equipment is also a major risk factor. The medical risk would be greatly reduced if we could develop an implant coating to guide tissue growth and promote antibacterial activity. Mesoporous bioactive glasses are mainly silicates with good osteoinductivity and have been used in medical dentistry and orthopedics for several decades. Strontium ions and silver ions could plausibly be incorporated into bioactive glass to achieve the required function. Strontium ions are trace elements in human bone that have been proposed to promote osseointegration and angiogenesis. Silver ions can cause bacterial apoptosis through surface charge imbalance after bonding to the cell membrane. In this study, functional polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) coatings were adhered to 316L stainless steel (SS) by spin coating. The multilayer film was composed of biocompatible and biodegradable collagen as a positively charged layer, γ-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA) as a negatively charged layer. Chitosan was incorporated to the 11th positively charged layer as a stabilizing barrier. Spray pyrolysis prepared mesoporous bioactive glass incorporated with silver and strontium (AgSrMBG) was added to each negatively charged layer. The PEM/AgSrMBG coating was well hydrophilic with a contact angle of 37.09°, hardness of 0.29 ± 0.09 GPa, Young’s modulus of 5.35 ± 1.55 GPa, and roughness of 374.78 ± 22.27 nm, as observed through nano-indention and white light interferometry. The coating’s antibacterial activity was sustained for 1 month through the inhibition zone test, and was biocompatible with rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), as observed in the MTT assay. There was more hydroxyapatite precipitation on the PEM/AgSrMBG surface after being soaked in simulated body fluid (SBF), as observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In both in vitro and in vivo tests, the PEM/AgSrMBG coating promoted angiogenesis, osseointegration, and antibacterial activity due to the sustained release of silver and strontium ions.

Obese Patients Experience More Severe CSA than Non-Obese Patients

Objective: To investigate whether central sleep apnea (CSA) is associated with an increased risk of obesity. Materials and methods: From 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2015, we screened 24,363 obese patients from the 2005 longitudinal health insurance database, which is part of the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. From the same database, 97,452 non-obese patients were also screened out. Age, gender, and index dates were matched. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyze the previous exposure risk of obese and CSA patients. A p-value of <0.05 was considered significant. Results: Obese patients were more likely to be exposed to CSA than non-obese patients would (AOR = 2.234, 95% CI = 1.483–4.380, p < 0.001). In addition, the closeness of the exposure time to the index time is positively correlated with the severity of obesity and has a dose–response effect (CSA exposure < 1 year, AOR = 2.386; CSA exposure ≥ 1 year and <5 years, AOR = 1.725; CSA exposure time ≥ 5 years, AOR = 1.422). The CSA exposure time of obese patients was 1.693 times that of non-obese patients. Longer exposure time is associated with more severe obesity and has a dose-response effect (CSA exposure < 1 year, AOR = 1.420; CSA exposure ≥ 1 year and <5 years, AOR = 2.240; CSA ≥ 5 years, AOR = 2.863). Conclusions: In this case-control study, patients with CSA had a significantly increased risk of obesity. Long-term exposure to CSA and obesity is more likely and has a dose-response effect.

Oral Cancer Theranostic Application of FeAu Bimetallic Nanoparticles Conjugated with MMP-1 Antibody

Metastatic oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) displays a poor disease prognosis with a 5-year survival rate of 39%. Chemotherapy has emerged as the mainstream treatment against small clusters of cancer cells but poses more risks than benefits for metastatic cells due to the non-specificity and cytotoxicity. To overcome these obstacles, we conjugated antibodies specific for matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1), a prognostic biomarker of SCC, to iron–gold bimetallic nanoparticles (FeAu NPs) and explored the capability of this complex to target and limit SSC cell growth via magnetic field-induced hyperthermia. Our results showed that 4.32 ± 0.79 nm sized FeAu NPs were superparamagnetic in nature with a saturation magnetization (Ms) of 5.8 emu/g and elevated the media temperature to 45 °C, confirming the prospect to deliver hyperthermia. Furthermore, conjugation with MMP-1 antibodies resulted in a 3.07-fold higher uptake in HSC-3 (human tongue squamous cell carcinoma) cells as compared to L929 (fibroblast) cells, which translated to a 5-fold decrease in cell viability, confirming SCC targeting. Finally, upon magnetic stimulation, MMP-1-FeAu NPs conjugate triggered 89% HSC-3 cellular death, confirming the efficacy of antibody-conjugated nanoparticles in limiting SCC growth. The synergistic effect of biomarker-specific antibodies and magnetic nanoparticle-induced hyperthermia may open new doors towards SCC targeting for improved disease prognosis.

Disposable and cost-effective label-free electrochemical immunosensor for prolactin based on bismuth sulfide nanorods with polypyrrole

Prolactin (PRL) is produced by the pituitary gland and plays a vital role in the production of milk after a baby is born. PRL levels are normally elevated in pregnant and nursing women, and high levels of PRL in the human body cause hyperprolactinemia, infertility, galactorrhea, infrequent or irregular periods, amenorrhea, breast pain, and loss of libido. Accordingly, herein, a novel label-free immunosensor using a bismuth sulfide/polypyrrole (Bi₂S₃/PPy)-modified screen-printed electrode (SPE) for the fast and facile detection of the peptide hormone PRL. Bi₂S₃ nanorods were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal technique, and PPy was prepared by chemical polymerization method. Subsequently, the Bi₂S₃/PPy/ SPE was modified with 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) and EDC/NHS. Owing to the cross-linking effect of EDC/NHS, antibody-PRL (anti-PRL) was firmly stabilized on the modified SPE surface. These layer-by-layer modifications enhanced the conducting properties, anti-PRL loading capacity, and sensitivity of the developed immunosensor. Under optimized conditions, the PRL immunosensor demonstrated a broad linear range of approximately 1-250 ng/mL, a low detection limit of approximately 0.130 ng/mL (3 × SD/b), good specificity, reproducibility, and stability. PRL was successfully evaluated in human and mouse serum samples, and the corresponding outcomes were compared with those of the electrochemical and ELISA methods.

3D Printing of Collagen/Oligomeric Proanthocyanidin/Oxidized Hyaluronic Acid Composite Scaffolds for Articular Cartilage Repair

Articular cartilage defects affect millions of people worldwide, including children, adolescents, and adults. Progressive wear and tear of articular cartilage can lead to progressive tissue loss, further exposing the bony ends and leaving them unprotected, which may ultimately cause osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease). Unlike other self-repairing tissues, cartilage has a low regenerative capacity; once injured, the cartilage is much more difficult to heal. Consequently, developing methods to repair this defect remains a challenge in clinical practice. In recent years, tissue engineering applications have employed the use of three-dimensional (3D) porous scaffolds for growing cells to regenerate damaged cartilage. However, these scaffolds are mainly chemically synthesized polymers or are crosslinked using organic solvents. Utilizing 3D printing technologies to prepare biodegradable natural composite scaffolds could replace chemically synthesized polymers with more natural polymers or low-toxicity crosslinkers. In this study, collagen/oligomeric proanthocyanidin/oxidized hyaluronic acid composite scaffolds showing high biocompatibility and excellent mechanical properties were prepared. The compressive strengths of the scaffolds were between 0.25–0.55 MPa. Cell viability of the 3D scaffolds reached up to 90%, which indicates that they are favorable surfaces for the deposition of apatite. An in vivo test was performed using the Sprague Dawley (SD) rat skull model. Histological images revealed signs of angiogenesis and new bone formation. Therefore, 3D collagen-based scaffolds can be used as potential candidates for articular cartilage repair.

Label-free electrochemical immunosensor based on gold nanoparticle/polyethyleneimine/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites for the ultrasensitive detection of cancer biomarker matrix metalloproteinase-1

Matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) is associated with many types of cancers, including oral, colorectal, and brain cancers. This paper describes the fabrication of an MMP-1 immunosensor based on a gold nanoparticle/polyethyleneimine/reduced graphene oxide (AuNP/PEI/rGO)-modified disposable screen-printed electrode (SPE). A microwave-assisted single-step method was employed for the simultaneous reduction of gold and graphene oxide in a PEI environment to avoid AuNP agglomeration. The crystal structure, chemical composition, optical properties, and interior morphology of the materials were probed by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, UV-visible spectrometry, and transmission electron microscopy techniques. To assemble a label-free MMP-1 immunosensor layer-by-layer, 3-mercaptopropionic acid was utilized due to its strong sulfur-gold bonding ability, and its tail end was attached to a carboxyl group, allowing the MMP-1 antibody (anti-MMP-1) to be subsequently cross-linked using the traditional N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) and N' ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride method. Differential pulse voltammetry analysis showed a linear relationship with MMP-1 concentration in the range of 1-50 ng ml-1 with an R2 value of ∼0.996 (n = 5, RSD < 5%). This immunosensor was successfully applied for MMP-1 detection in urine, saliva, bovine serum, and cell culture media (HSC-3 & C6) of oral and brain cancers showing results comparable to those of the credible ELISA method.

An Investigation on Spray-Granulated, Macroporous, Bioactive Glass Microspheres for a Controlled Drug Delivery System

Bioactive glass (BG) has been regarded as an excellent candidate for biomedical applications due to its superior properties of bioactivity, biocompatibility, osteoconductivity and biodegradability. Thus, in this study, we aimed to fabricate drug carriers that were capable of loading therapeutic antibiotics while promoting bone regeneration using macroporous BG microspheres, prepared by a spray drying method. Characterizations of particle morphology and specific surface area were carried out via scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherm. Evaluations of in vitro bioactivity were performed based on Kokubo's simulated body fluid to confirm the formation of the hydroxyapatite (HA) layer after immersion. In addition, the in vitro drug release behaviors were examined, using tetracycline as the therapeutic antibiotic in pH 7.4 and 5.0 environments. Finally, the results showed that BG microspheres of up to 33 μm could be mass-produced, targeting various therapeutic situations and their resulting bioactivities and drug release behaviors, and related properties were discussed.
