Screening of Multitarget Compounds against Acetaminophen Hepatic Toxicity Using In Silico, In Vitro, and In Vivo Approaches

Combination therapy and multitarget drugs have recently attracted much attention as promising tools to fight against many challenging diseases and, thus, represent a new research focus area. The aim of the current project was to screen multitarget compounds and to study their individual and combined effects on acetaminophen-induced liver injury. In this study, 2 of the best hepatoprotective multitargeting compounds were selected from a pool of 40 major compounds present in Curcuma longa and Cinnamomum zeylanicum by using molecular docking, ADMET profiling, and Pfizer's rule of five. The two selected compounds, quercetin and curcumin, showed a high binding affinity for the CYP2E1 enzyme, MAPK, and TLR4 receptors that contribute to liver injury. The candidates caused the decreased viability of cancer cell lines (HepG2 and Huh7) but showed no effect on a normal cell line (Vero). Examination of biochemical parameters (ALT, AST, ALP, and bilirubin) showed the hepatoprotective effect of the candidate drugs in comparison with the control group, which was confirmed by histological findings. Taken together, quercetin and curcumin not only satisfied the drug-like assessment criterion and proved to be multitargeting by preventing liver damage but also showed anticancer activities.

Comparison of All-Polyethylene Tibial Versus Metal-Backed Tibial Component in Total Knee Replacement Surgery

Introduction: Total knee replacement (TKR) is the most successful procedure in Orthopedics. The selection of an ideal implant relies on better survivorship, restoration of functional activities and cost-effectiveness. This study compared the effectiveness of all-polyethylene (AP) versus metal-backed tibial (MTB) implant in TKR patients in terms of objective and subjective patient related outcomes. Objectives: To compare the effectiveness of all-polyethylene tibial implants versus metal-backed tibial implants in total knee replacement patients in terms of improvement in the American Knee Society Score (AKSS). Methodology: It was a nonrandomized controlled trial done in the Orthopaedic Department of the Sharif Medical City Hospital, Lahore, after approval by the institutional ethical committee. Fifty patients of grade IV knee joint osteoarthritis for greater than six months were included by nonprobability convenient sampling technique. The patients were allocated equally into standard treatment and intervention groups; patients underwent TKR with MTB implants in the standard group and AP implants in the intervention group after taking informed written consent. The AKSS score was calculated pre-operatively, 3 months and 6 months after surgery by the team member not involved in surgical planning. Results: A statistically significant improvement was observed in pre-operative to post-operative knee scores (p-value = 0.004) and functional scores (p-value = 0.001) with TKR. When the means of knee scores were compared between AP and MTB implants, there was no significant difference between the two groups between pre-operative and post-operative knee scores and functional scores. Practical implication Conclusion: There is no significant difference in knee score between the all-polyethylene and metal-backed implants regarding pain and functional status. All-polyethylene implants are a better substitute for MTB implants due to their cost-effectiveness, particularly in countries with financial constraints. The most practical implication of the current study is health economics. In a developing country with a low per capita income, expensive implants can be swapped with low cost implants to bring the cost of the procedure down. Knowledge, attitude and practices regarding dengue and its vector among medical practitioners in Malakand region, Pakistan

Abstract Dengue fever (DF) is increasingly recognized as one of the world’s major mosquito borne diseases and causes significant morbidity and mortality in tropical and subtropical countries. Dengue fever is endemic in most part of Pakistan and continues to be a public health concern. Knowledge, attitude and practices can play an important role in management of the disease. Current study was aimed to determine the level of knowledge, attitude and practices regarding dengue fever among health practitioners, to study the level of knowledge and attitude with preventive practices for dengue fever. A cross sectional study was carried out in medical practitioners of the four districts of Malakand region during October to November 2019. A pre-structured questionnaire was used to collect data from medical practitioners. Data was analyzed using Graph Pad version 5. Significant value was considered when less than 0.05 (at 95% confidence of interval). The results revealed that most of participants have seen dengue vector (62%), the media being the most quoted source of information. Nearly 81.2% participants were aware from transmission of dengue fever is by mosquito bite. Practices based upon preventive measures were found to be predominantly focused towards prevention of mosquito bites rather than elimination of breeding places. Although the knowledge regarding DF and mosquito control measure was quite high among the medical practitioners but this knowledge was not put into practice. Further studies are required to aware the people about dengue and its vector in order to get prevention and control.

Fungal conversion of chicken-feather waste into biofortified compost

Poultry industry is amongst highly developed industries of Pakistan, fulfilling the protein demand of rapidly increasing population. On the other hand, the untreated poultry waste is causing several health and environmental problems. The current study was designed to check the potential of keratinolytic fungal species for the conversion of chicken-feather waste into biofortified compost. For the purpose, three fungal species were isolated from soil samples. These strains were pure cultured and then characterized phenotypically and genotypically. BLAST searches of 18S rDNA nucleotide sequence of the fungal isolates revealed that the two fungal isolates belonged to genus Aspergillus and one belonged to genus Chrysosporium. Optimum temperature for Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger and Chrysosporium queenslandicum was 29, 26 and 25 oC, respectively. A. flavus showed maximum (53%) feather degradation, A. niger degraded feather waste up to 37%, while C. queenslandicum showed 21% keratinolytic activity on chicken feathers at their respective temperature optima. The degradation potential of these fungal species showed their ability to form compost that has agro-industrial importance.

Wind-noise reduction for infrasonic measurements using adaptive line enhancement

Measurement quality and analysis capability of infrasonic signals are both affected by background wind-noise. Physical filters, i.e., barriers and pipe arrays, are traditionally employed to reduce such noise. However, limited efficacy, site dependence, cost, requirement of space, non-portability, and frequent maintenance are some of their major drawbacks. This work proposes an adaptive filtering-based adaptive line enhancer (ALE) noise cancellation scheme as an alternative. Two infrasonic sensors (Chaparral Physics 50A), are adjacently deployed. One sensor is fitted with a conventional four-armed non-porous hose array (physical filter), while the ALE scheme is applied to the second sensor, sans physical filter. In high wind-noise conditions, the ALE scheme seems to behave as a lowpass filter (cutoff at 0.2 Hz), with a maximum attenuation of 26 dB at 8 Hz, while the physical filter provides significant attenuation only above 4 Hz with a maximum attenuation of 17 dB at 8 Hz. Generally, at other frequencies, the ALE scheme provides up to 20 dB superior noise attenuation as compared to the physical filter. The ALE also provides up to 6 dB gain in the signal-to-noise ratio as compared to the physical filter, due to non-attenuation of the infrasonic signal.

Association of Serum Ferritin Levels with Microalbuminuria, Glycemic Control and Dyslipidemia

As diabetes is on the rise worldwide, early screening and detection of its complications is crucial. The first clinical sign of renal dysfunction in diabetes is microalbuminuria. Ferritin may have a possible role in the development and prediction of microalbuminuria and other complications of diabetes by 3 possible mechanisms- 1) it is a marker of elevated body iron stores. 2) acts as acute-phase reactant and elevation reflects inflammation 3) Delayed clearance of glycosylated ferritin in patients with diabetes causes raised ferritin levels. In this premise, we studied the association between serum ferritin levels and microalbuminuria, glycemic control and dyslipidemia in type 2 diabetic patients.

MATERIAL

A cross-sectional study was carried out at a tertiary hospital in northern India involving 152 patients of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Anthropometric measurements (weight, height), sample collection for basic laboratory parameters including complete blood count, kidney function tests, liver function tests, HbA1c, lipid profile, serum iron and ferritin levels, urinary albumin- creatinine ratio was done. A fundus examination was performed. Results were analyzed using descriptive statistics and making comparisons among various groups. Categorical data were summarized as proportions or percentages while discrete as mean. Chi-square test was used for testing associations.

OBSERVATION

Mean serum ferritin levels were significantly higher in patients having microalbuminuria as against patients having normal urinary albumin- creatinine ratio (539 vs 292, p-value- 0.04). Patients having poor glycemic control (HbA1c > 7) had higher ferritin levels (p-value- 0.024). There was a near-significant association (p-value-0.06) between serum ferritin and triglyceride levels. More cases with raised serum ferritin had higher triglyceride levels. Patients having microalbuminuria had a higher prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (p-value- 0.003) and higher triglyceride levels (p-value- 0.041).

CONCLUSION

Ferritin can act as a marker of diabetic nephropathy, poor glycemic control and dyslipidemia in type 2 diabetic patients. Our study, therefore, indicates that programs to prevent complications of diabetes would be more effective by placing greater emphasis on patients having higher ferritin levels.

Data set showing the development of a hyperspectral imaging technique using LA-ICP-MS to determine the spatial distribution of nutrients in soil cores

This data in brief article represents the data set associated with a research article published in Geoderma [1]. The data set represents figures showing the spatial distribution of selected macro and micronutrients, and their quantification in different crop or nutrient management systems practiced in the boreal ecosystem. Spatial distribution of nutrients was measured by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA‒ICP‒MS), using the new techniques we developed to visualize nutrient distribution in intact soil cores representative of the root rhizosphere. This data article supports the findings published in the main article [1]. This work also demonstrates that LA-ICP-MS is a valuable technique to image the spatial distribution of macro and micronutrients in intact soil cores as affected by different crop management practices.

Preliminary Assessment of the Diversity and Habitat Preferences of Herpetofauna in Cholistan Desert, Pakistan

This one-year survey was conducted from February 2017 to January 2018 to assess the herpetofaunal diversity in Cholistan desert, Bahawalnagar district, Punjab, Pakistan. Field surveys were conducted during dawn and dusk for fifteen consecutive days in alternate months and five sub sampling sites were sampled at ten field visits. Specimens were collected through hand capture, using snake sticks, forceps, drag nets, noose traps, pitfall and funnel traps. Overall, two species of toads, two species of frogs, two species of turtles, ten lizards species and ten snake species belonging to 23 genera and 14 families were recorded. Simpson index was calculated as 0.933, evenness 0.733 and Shannon – Wiener index was 2.947 indicating moderate to high level of diversity. Bufo stomaticus (Pi = 0.1253), Uromastyx hardwickii (Pi = 0.0739) were the dominant amphibian and reptilian species, respectively while Uromastyx asmussi was recorded for the first time in the study area. Hand capture and pitfall traps appeared to be the most effective methods to capture the amphibian and reptiles. The distribution ranges of amphibians and reptiles have changed and such surveys are necessary to update baseline information in the country. We recommend further systematic survey work and molecular analysis of the native species be undertaken in the future to supplement our findings.

Prevalence of parasites in selected captive bird species

Blood and fecal samples of chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar), albino pheasant (Phasianus colchicus), silver pheasant (Lophura nycthemera), rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri) and turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) were analyzed to check parasitic prevalence. To record parasites these five avian species were placed kept in separate cages at Avian Conservation and Research Center, Department of Wildlife an Ecology, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore, Pakistan. 100 fecal and 100 blood samples for each bird species were inspected to analyze internal parasites. During present study, 17 species of endoparasites 14 from fecal samples and three from blood were examined. Two species of ectoparasites i.e. mite Dermanyssus gallinae 42% and fowl ticks Args persicus 41%were studied. Blood parasites included Plasmodium juxtanucleare 50%, Leucoctoyzoon simond having parasitic prevalence 40%, and Aegyptinella pullorum having parasitic prevalence of 40%. Parasitic species recorded from fecal samples included 6 species of nematodes viz. Allodpa suctoria 2%. Syngamus trachea with parasitic prevalence of 60%, Capillaria annulata 37.5%, Ascardia galli 24%, Capillaria anatis 40% and Heterakis gallinarum 28.3%. Similarly, two species of trematodes viz. Prosthogonimus ovatus having parasitic prevalence of 50% and Prosthogonimus macrorchis 21% were also documented from fecal avian samples . Single cestode species Raillietina echinobothrida having parasitic prevalence of 72% and 3 protozoan species i.e. Eimeria maxima having parasitic prevalence of 21%, Giardia lamblia 41% and Histomonas meleagridis 18% were documented during corpological analysis. In our recommendation, proper sanitation, medication and vaccination of bird's enclousres are suggested to avoid parasites.

Genetic variations and phylogenetic relationship of genus Uromastyx from Punjab Pakistan

During the present study, specimens were collected from selected sites of Cholistan desert and Kalabagh Game Reserve, Punjab province, Pakistan. Each captured specimen was tagged with voucher number and morphometric measurements were taken. The average snout to vent length was 172.559±1.40 mm and average weight was 92.1±1.30 g. The DNA of Uromastyx hardwickii was amplified and sequenced using 16S rRNA primer set. The obtained DNA sequence has shown reliable and clear species identification. After trimming ambiguous bases, the obtained 16S rRNA fragment was 520 bp while 16S rRNA fragments aligned with closely matched sequence from NCBI comprised of 510 bp. Closely matched sequences of genus Uromastyx were retrieved from NCBI in blast searches. Neighbour-joining tree of genus Uromastyx was constructed based on p-distance using MEGA X. The mean intraspecific variation was 0.095±0.01 while intraspecific variation was ranging from 0-1%. Similarly, interspecific variation of Uromastyx hardwikii with Saara asmussi, Uromastyx alfredschmidti, Uromastyx geyri, Uromastyx thomasi, Uromastyx alfredschmidti was 0-12%, 0-19%, 0-19%, 0-20%, 12-19% respectively. The newly produced DNA was submitted to NCBI and accession number was obtained (MW052563.1). Results of current study provided information about the molecular and morphological identification of Genus Uromastyx. In our recommendation, comprehensive molecular based identification of Pakistan's reptiles is required to report any new or subspecies from country.

Isolation and characterization of bacteria residing in the oral, gut, and fecal samples of different pheasant species

There is a paucity of research conducted on microbial prevalence in pheasants. The microbiota of captive birds has zoonotic significance and must be characterize. Present study is therefore planned to assess the microbiota from oral, fecal and gut content of captive avian species. It will be helpful in characterization of harmful microbes. Different samples taken from oral, gut and feces of ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus), green pheasants (Phasianus versicolor), golden pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus) and silver pheasant (Lophura nycthemera). Samples were collected, diluted, and inoculated onto different agar plates (MacConkey, SS agar, MSA and nutrient agar) for cultivation of bacterial species. Colonies of E.coli, Staphylococcus spp. Brachyspira spp. and Campylobacter spp were observed based on colony morphology. Colony forming unit showed E. coli as frequently found bacteria in fecal, oral and gut contents of all the above pheasants. The overall significance difference was found among bacterial species of golden pheasants, green pheasant, ring-necked pheasant, and silver pheasants. It was concluded that E.coli is predominant isolated from heathy pheasants followed by Campylobacter, Staphylococcus and Brachyspira.

Central Corneal Thickness: Ultrasound Pachymetry Verus Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography

Purpose: To determine the mean difference in central corneal thickness between ultrasound pachymetry and anterior segment optical coherence tomography in patients visiting tertiary care hospital of Karachi Study design: Cross sectional study Place and Duration of Study: Department of Ophthalmology, Liaquat National Hospital, Karachi from 27th December 2018 to 26th June 2019. Methods: Total 216 eyes of 108 patients were divided into two groups. Central corneal thickness was measured using ultrasound pachymeters in group A and with anterior segment optical coherence tomography in group B. Data was collected and analyzed using SPSS version 21. Mean central corneal thickness was compared between the two methods. Stratification was done on gender, age and post-stratification independent sample t-test was applied for mean difference CCT and P-value ≤ 0.05 was taken as significant. Results: Total 108 patients were equally divided into two groups. Mean age was 48.70±7.82 years in group A and 50.66±6.88 years in group B. In group A, there were 74.1% males and 25.9% females while in group B, there were 75.9% males and 24.1% females. There was statistically significant difference between the mean central corneal thickness of group A and group B for right and left eyes (p<0.001). Mean difference was also compared for gender and age groups. We found statistically significant differences in central corneal thickness in between the two methods in both age groups (≤45 years and > 45 years). Conclusion: Central corneal thickness was more with pachymeters as compared to the AS-OCT (p value < 0.05) Key Words: Central Corneal Thickness, Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography, Ultrasound Pachymetry.

Cross-genera amplification and identification of Colpodella sp. with Cryptosporidium primers in fecal samples of zoo felids from northeast China

The protozoans include many intracellular human pathogens. Accurate detection of these pathogens is necessary to treat the diseases. In clinical epidemiology, molecular identification of protozoan is considered a more reliable and rapid method for identification than microscopy. Among these protozoans, Cryptosporidium considered being one of the important water-borne zoonotic pathogens and a major cause of a diarrheal disease named cryptosporidiosis in humans, domestic animals, and wild animals. This study was aimed to identify Cryptosporidium in zoo felids (N= 56) belonging to different zoo of China, but accidentlly Colpodella was encountered in the zoo felids sample and phylogenetic data confirmed this unexpected amplification from fecal samples using two-step nested-PCR. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the fact about the specific primers used previously by many researchers and cross-genera amplification. We came to know that genetically sequenced amplicon gives more accurate identification of species. This study suggests more investigation on Colpodella which has been neglected previously but gains the attention of researchers after identified from humans and animals and has been known to correlate with neurological symptoms in patients.

Amelioration potential of Moringa oleifera extracts against sodium arsenate induced embryotoxicity and genotoxicity in mouse (Mus musculus)

Previous studies have suggested that arsenic crosses the placenta and affects the fetus development. The study under consideration aims to show comparative ameliorative effect of Moringa oleifera leaf and flower extracts against sodium arsenate induced fetus toxicity of mice. Pregnant mice (N=44) were kept in lab and divided into eleven group from (A to K) and were orally administered the doses 6 mg/kg, 12 mg/kg for sodium arsenate, 150 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg for Moringa oleifera leaf extracts (MOLE) and 150 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg for Moringa oleifera flower extracts (MOFE) comparing with control. The investigation revealed evident reduction in the fetuses weight, hind limb, fore limb, tail and snout length, crown rump and head circumferences well as malformations in tail, feet, arms, legs, skin and eyes in the negative control group (only administered with sodium arsenate). Co-administration of sodium arsenate with MOLE and MOFE ameliorate the reversed effect of sodium arsenate on the shape, length, body weight and DNA damage of fetus significantly at 95% confidence interval. However, Moringa oleifera leaf extract showed more significant results in comparison to Moringa oleifera flower extract. Hence concluded that Moringa oleifera leaf extract ameliorated the embryo toxic effects of sodium arsenate and can be used against environmental teratogens.

Phylogeography of cliff racer (Platyceps rhodorachis Jan, 1865) from Punjab, Pakistan

The present study reports the existence of cliff racer, Platyceps rhodorachis from the plains of Punjab, Pakistan. A total of 10 specimens were captured during the field surveys from June to September, 2018 from different sites of Punjab. Platyceps rhodorachis was identify on the basis of morphology and confirmed through COI gene sequences. The obtained DNA sequences have shown reliable and exact species identification. Newly produced DNA sequences of Platyceps rhodorachis were submitted to GenBank and accession numbers were obtained (MK936174.1, MK941839.1 and MT790210.1). N-J tree based on COI sequences of Platyceps rhodorachis clearly separated as out-group with other members of family Colubridae based on p-distance. The intra-specific genetic variation ranges from 12% to 18%. The DNA sequences of Platyceps rhodorachis kashmirensis, Platyceps rhodorachis ladacensis, Platyceps ventromaculatus, Platyceps ventromaculatus bengalensis and Platyceps ventromaculatus indusai are not available at NCBI to validate their taxonomic positions. In our recommendations, a large scale molecular based identification of Pakistan's herpetofauna is required to report more new or subspecies from country.

Studies on parasitic prevalence in pet birds from Punjab, Pakistan

During this one year study, blood and fecal samples of doves (Zenaida asiatica), ducks (Anas platyrhynchos), pigeons (Columba livia), partridges (Alectoris chukar), turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) and goose (Chen caerulescens) were collected to assess the parasitic prevalence in these birds. The birds were kept at Avian Conservation and Research Center, Department of Wildlife and Ecology, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore. All these avian species were kept in separate cages and their entire body was inspected on regularly basis to record external parasites. For internal parasites, 100 blood and 100 fecal samples for each species were analyzed. During present study, two species of ectoparasites i.e. fowl ticks (Args persicus) and mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) while 17 species of endoparasites; three from blood and 14 from fecal samples were identified. Prevalence of blood parasites was Plasmodium juxtanucleare 29.3%, Aegyptinella pullorum 15% and Leucoctoyzoon simond 13%. Parasitic species recorded from fecal samples included 6 species of nematodes viz. Syngamus trachea with parasitic prevalence of 50%, Capillaria anatis 40%, Capillaria annulata 37.5%, Heterakis gallinarum 28.3%, Ascardia galli 24% and Allodpa suctoria 2%. Similarly, two species of trematodes viz. Prosthogonimus ovatus having parasitic prevalence of 12.1% and Prosthogonimus macrorchis 9.1% were also recorded from fecal samples of the birds. Single cestode species Raillietina echinobothrida having parasitic prevalence of 27% and 3 protozoan species i.e. Eimeria maxima having prevalence 20.1%, Histomonas meleagridis 8% and Giardia lamblia 5.3% were recorded. In our recommendation, proper medication and sanitation of the bird's houses and cages is recommended to avoid parasites.

Molecular identification of genus Pipistrellus (Mammalia: Chiroptera) from Fata region, Pakistan

A total of 10 specimens were captured from selected sites of Bajaur Agency FATA, Pakistan using mist nets. The captured specimens were morphologically identified and various morphometric measurements were taken. The head and Body length (HB) of Pipistrellus coromondra and Pipistrellus kuhlii lepidus (n=10) was 43±0.11 mm and 45±1.1 respectively. Morphologically identified Pipistrellus kuhlii confirmed as Pipistrellus kuhlii lepidus based on 16S rRNA sequences. The DNA sequences were submitted to GenBank and accession numbers were obtained (MN 719478 and MT430902). The available 16S rRNA gene sequences of Pipistrellus coromondra and Pipistrellus kuhlii lepidus were retrieved from NCBI and incorporated in N-J tree analysis. Overall, the interspecific genetic variations among Pipistrellus coromondra and Pipistrellus kuhlii lepidus were 8% and 1% respectively. In our recommendation, a comprehensive molecular identification of bats is need of hour to report more cryptic and new species from Pakistan.

Variations in nutritional profile of honey produced by various species of genus Apis

The medicinal attributes of honey appears to overshadow its importance as a functional food. Consequently, several literatures are rife with ancient uses of honey as complementary and alternative medicine, with relevance to modern day health care, supported by evidence-based clinical data, with little attention given to honey's nutritional functions. The moisture contents of honey extracted from University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore honey bee farm was 12.19% while that of natural source was 9.03 ± 1.63%. Similarly, ash and protein contents of farmed honey recorded were 0.37% and 5.22%, respectively. Whereas ash and protein contents of natural honey were 1.70 ± 1.98% and 6.10 ± 0.79%. Likewise fat, dietary fiber and carbohydrates contents of farmed source documented were 0.14%, 1.99% and 62.26% respectively. Although fat, dietary fiber and carbohydrates contents of honey taken from natural resource were 0.54 ± 0.28%, 2.76 ± 1.07% and 55.32 ± 2.91% respectively. Glucose and fructose contents of honey taken out from honeybee farm were 27% and 34% but natural source were 22.50 ± 2.12% and 28.50 ± 3.54%. Glucose and fructose contents of honey taken out from honeybee farm were 27% and 34% but natural source were 22.50 ± 2.12% and 28.50 ± 3.54%. Similarly, sucrose and maltose contents of farmed honey were 2.5% and 12% while in natural honey were 1.35 ± 0.49% and 8.00 ± 1.41% respectively. The present study indicates that such as moisture, carbohydrates, sucrose and maltose contents were higher farmed honey as compared to the natural honey. In our recommendation natural honey is better than farmed honey.

Fungal decomposition of chicken-feather waste in submerged and solid-state fermentation

Poultry industry is expanding rapidly and producing million tons of feather waste annually. Massive production of keratinaceous byproducts in the form of industrial wastes throughout the world necessitates its justified utilization. Chemical treatment of keratin waste is proclaimed as an eco-destructive approach by various researchers since it generates secondary pollutants. Keratinase released by a variety of microbes (bacteria and fungi) can be used for the effective treatment of keratin waste. Microbial degradation of keratin waste is an emerging and eco-friendly approach and offers dual benefits, i.e., treatment of recalcitrant pollutant (keratin) and procurement of a commercially important enzyme (keratinase). This study involves the isolation, characterization, and potential utility of fungal species for the degradation of chicken-feather waste through submerged and solid-state fermentation. The isolated fungus was identified and characterized as Aspergillus (A.) flavus. In a trial of 30 days, it was appeared that 74 and 8% feather weight was reduced through sub-merged and solid-state fermentation, respectively by A. flavus. The pH of the growth media in submerged fermentation was changed from 4.8 to 8.35. The exploited application of keratinolytic microbes is, therefore, recommended for the treatment of keratinaceous wastes to achieve dual benefits of remediation.

Comparison of Mean Axial Length Measured by Acoustic Biometry versus Optical Biometry

Purpose:  To compare the mean axial length measured by acoustic biometry with optical biometry. Design:  Descriptive observational study. Place and Duration of Study:  Department of Ophthalmology Liaquat National Hospital and Medical College, Karachi from November 2018 to April 2019. Methods:   were 246 patients with visually significant cataract who were recruited in this study by consecutive sampling. Axial lengths were measured by non-contact optical method using Carl Zeiss IOL master. After instillation of local anesthetic, axial lengths were re-measured by contact method with A-Scan probe. All readings were taken by a single observer to avoid data collection bias. Mean and standard deviation was computed for quantitative variable i.e. age, axial length by Applanation ultra sound and axial length by optical biometry. Frequency and percentage was calculated for qualitative variables i.e. gender. Differences of axial length between the Applanation and optical biometry were compared by using pair T-test. Effect modifiers like age and gender were addressed through stratification, post stratification independent test for two groups and ANOVA for more than two groups was applied. Results:  The average age of the patients was 58.09 ± 7.27 years. Mean axial length by optical biometry was 23.744 ± 0.74mm as compared to 22.29 ± 0.76 mm by acoustic method and this difference was statistically significant (P = 0.0005). Conclusion:  Results of axial length with Optical and acoustic biometry are significantly different with p value less than 0.05. However, optical biometers fail in cases of dense media opacities where acoustic biometry in needed. Key Words:  Cataract, Axial length, Applanation ultrasound, Optical Biometry.

Interspecific variations in external and internal egg quality among various captive avian species from Punjab, Pakistan

Present study was planned to determine variations in external and internal quality egg parameters of different avian species including ostrich Struthio camelus, ducks Anas platyrhynchos, chicken Gallus gallus, turkeys Meleagris gallopavo and grey francolin Francolinus pondicerinus. All the birds were kept under similar rearing conditions. A total of 150 eggs were collected for each species to record external features of these eggs. Statistically significant (p<0.05) variations were recorded in egg weight, egg length and egg width between ostrich, ducks, chicken, turkey and quail eggs. Significantly (p<0.05) higher egg weight, egg length and egg width was observed for ostrich eggs while the same was lowest for grey francolin eggs. Similarly, significantly (p<0.05) greater shape index and egg volume values were observed for ostrich eggs while lowest shape index values were recorded for turkey eggs and egg volume was lowest for grey francolin. Significantly, higher (p<0.05) values of egg density were noted for eggs of the quail and the same were lowest for ostrich eggs. Non-significant variations in egg density values were observed between eggs of the ducks, chicken, turkey and grey francolin. It has been concluded that the positive correlations between the internal and external egg quality traits indicated that the traits can be improved through selection.

Reversibility of heart block after congenital heart surgeries in pediatrics, is it predictable?

Background

 

AV block is a serious complication of congenital heart diseases(CHD) repair surgeries.it is associated with an increased mortality and morbidity.

Purpose : 

Identifying the incidence of Complete Heart Block (CHB) after heart surgeries for CHD, analyzing the patients` specifications and procedural data to evaluate the potential correlations that contribute the HB postoperatively.

Patients and methods : 

We enrolled all patients who underwent CHD surgeries from September 2014 till February 2020 and identified the patients who developed postoperative CHB, those patients  were divided into two groups, (a group who developed transient  CHB  and those who developed permanent CHB which required implantation  of permanent pacemaker (PPM).

We defined the transient HB as the recovery from  an advanced second or third degree HB after the surgery within 10days .  

And the presence of advanced second or third degree HB persisting for more than 10 days after cardiac surgery is considered a permanent HB and indicated  for PPM implantation according to current guidelines .

Results :  

Our cohort includes 2377 CHD surgeries, 46 % female patients, median weight was 12.06 kg at the time of the operation, median height was 85 cm. 

Mean age at the time of the operation was 2.7 years in the cohort with transient HB while it was 2.6 years  in the cohort who received PPM.

Incidence of HB following those surgeries was 3 %(72) patients, 1.8 %of the patients (43)  had transient HB  and 1.2% of the patients (21 ) received a PPM. 

Recovery from HB was within 7days in 35 patients (82%),Two out of the 43 patients who had transient HB ended up with late onset CHB requiring pacing representing 4.6 % of that cohort, one after one month of recovery and the other one after 11 years from the surgery despite they restored their sinus rhythm within 6 days and 10 days respectively. 

We found the highest incidence of postoperative HB associated with VSDs surgeries either isolated or with other complex CHD diseases followed by TOF with no significant difference between transient and permanent groups according to the type of surgery. 

The duration of preoperative PR interval suggested the incidence of permanent  CHB postoperatively with a P value of 0.005

We found that gender, age, weight and height didn`t affect the outcome, preoperative heart rate and preoperative medications didn`t alter the prognosis, the duration of CBP time and the clamping time were of no statistical significance between the 2 groups with P value of ( 0.38 and 0.33 ). 

Conclusion : 

Incidence of CHB post CHD surgeries in our center is 3 %, only 1.2 % required PPM. 

Various clinical data , ECG criteria , procedural time and duration of the HB except for the preoperative PR interval  failed to prove a significant correlation with the incidence of CHB necessitating further investigation to identify the specific risk factors for such complication. Corn-Soybean Intercropping Improved the Nutritional Quality of Forage Cultivated on Podzols in Boreal Climate

Intercropping systems could be a potential source of nutrient-rich forage production in cool climates on podzolic soils common in boreal ecosystems. In this study, we evaluated the effects of corn-soybean intercropping (IC) on the nutritional quality of forage. Two silage corn varieties were cultivated as monocropping (MC) or were intercropped with three forage soybean varieties using a randomized complete block design. IC significantly increased the crude protein (22%) and decreased the acid detergent (14%) and neutral detergent (6%) fibers. Forage net energy, total digestible nutrients, ash, dry matter intake, digestible dry matter and relative feed value were also significantly increased (p ≤ 0.05) in the IC treatments compared to corn MC. The macro and micro nutrients were higher in IC than corn MC. Intercropping increased the omega 3 fatty acid (FA) contents (67%) compared to corn MC. IC also increased the active microbial community in the plant root zone, which may contribute to the improvement in forage nutritional quality because the active soil microbial community composition showed significant correlations with soluble sugars, soluble proteins and potassium contents of the forage. These results demonstrate that corn-soybean IC could be a suitable cropping system to increase the nutritional quality of forage cultivated on podzols in boreal climates. The resultant forage has the potential to be a source of high-value animal feed for livestock production in cool climate regions of the world.

Development and internal validation of clinical prediction models for outcomes of complicated intra-abdominal infection

BACKGROUND

Complicated intra-abdominal infections (cIAIs) are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics of patients with cIAI in a multicentre study and to develop clinical prediction models (CPMs) to help identify patients at risk of mortality or relapse.

METHODS

A multicentre observational study was conducted from August 2016 to February 2017 in the UK. Adult patients diagnosed with cIAI were included. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to develop CPMs for mortality and cIAI relapse. The c-statistic was used to test model discrimination. Model calibration was tested using calibration slopes and calibration in the large (CITL). The CPMs were then presented as point scoring systems and validated further.

RESULTS

Overall, 417 patients from 31 surgical centres were included in the analysis. At 90 days after diagnosis, 17.3 per cent had a cIAI relapse and the mortality rate was 11.3 per cent. Predictors in the mortality model were age, cIAI aetiology, presence of a perforated viscus and source control procedure. Predictors of cIAI relapse included the presence of collections, outcome of initial management, and duration of antibiotic treatment. The c-statistic adjusted for model optimism was 0.79 (95 per cent c.i. 0.75 to 0.87) and 0.74 (0.73 to 0.85) for mortality and cIAI relapse CPMs. Adjusted calibration slopes were 0.88 (95 per cent c.i. 0.76 to 0.90) for the mortality model and 0.91 (0.88 to 0.94) for the relapse model; CITL was -0.19 (95 per cent c.i. -0.39 to -0.12) and - 0.01 (- 0.17 to -0.03) respectively.

CONCLUSION

Relapse of infection and death after complicated intra-abdominal infections are common. Clinical prediction models were developed to identify patients at increased risk of relapse or death after treatment, these now require external validation.

Factors Predisposing to Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment in a Tertiary Care Hospital of Pakistan

Purpose:  To find out the factors predisposing to rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Study Design:  Descriptive cross sectional study. Place and Duration of Study:  Liaquat National Hospital, Karachi, from October 2017 to April 2018. Methods:  After approval from ethical review committee 117 patients presenting with Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) were included in the study. A detailed history was taken including previous surgery and trauma. Complete ocular examination was performed including dilated fundus examination. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 21. Mean and standard deviation were computed for quantitative variable i.e. age and frequency. Percentages were calculated for qualitative variables i.e. gender, eye involved, lattice degeneration, trauma and intraocular surgery. Stratification was done with regards to age, gender, eye involved to see the effect of these modifiers on individual factor (lattice degeneration, trauma, intraocular surgery) by using chi square test and considering p value ≤ 0.05 as significant. Results:  There were 117 patients including 91 males and 26 females. Sixty four were right eyes and fifty three were left eyes. Mean age was 37.30 ± 8.97 years. Lattice Degeneration was observed in 29.1% patents, Trauma was 37.6% and intraocular surgery was observed in 33.3% patients. There was a significant association of age with trauma (p = 0.045) and intraocular surgery (p = 0.001), which had statistically significant association with RRD. Conclusion:  Intraocular surgery, trauma were significantly associated with age and RRD. However, although lattice degeneration is an established risk factors for Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment it was not associated with increased age. Evaluation of the nuclear reaction cross sections via proton induced reactions on 72Ge and 76Se to produce 72As: A potential entrant for the theranostic pairs

Theranostic applications of radiopharmaceuticals have revolutionized present era specially, dealing with cancer diseases. Increase in the uses of radionuclides in nuclear medicine has resulted in the demands of optimized new radionuclides to be produced focussing on the economy, simplicity and maximum yield. Two radionuclides of arsenic offer a well agreed theranostic systems namely ⁷⁷As and ⁷²As. Some arsenic radionuclides are capable of positron-emission, with range of hour to weeks half-lives and have potential to be used for nuclear medicine. Present work will elucidate the production of ⁷²As on Germanium and Selenium via proton induced nuclear reactions. The experimental results obtained by several nuclear reactions were analyzed. The results of nuclear model codes namely ALICE-IPPE, EMPIRE-3.2.3 and TALYS-1.9 are compared with the experimental cross sections to generate recommended cross section data. Recommended excitation functions are used to compute the thick target yields (TTY) of ⁷²As. Assessment of radionuclidic impurities are also studied and comparison of several radionuclidic impurities is done. To produce ⁷²As,⁷²Ge (p, n)⁷²As, ⁷³Ge (p, 2n)⁷²As, ⁷⁴Ge (p, 3n)⁷²As and ⁷⁶Se (p, x)⁷²As reactions in different energy ranges are discussed. We have identified ⁷²Ge (p, n)⁷²As reaction; gives pre-eminent yield with least impurities mark it as feasible entrant to be applied in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and theranostic applications.

Immobilization of peroxidase on textile carrier materials and their application in the bleaching of colored whey

Textiles represent promising support materials for enzymes. The goal of the present work was to investigate the immobilization of commercial peroxidase on a polyester needle felt and the repeated use in the gentle degradation of norbixin in whey from dairy cheese as a practical application. High enzyme loads were obtained by a 2-step immobilization procedure. First, the number of functional groups on the textile surface was increased by a modification with amino-functional polyvinylamine. Second, the enzyme was immobilized by using 2 types of crosslinking agents. Due to the iron content of peroxidase, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry was used for the quantitative determination of the enzyme load on the textile. The enzyme activity was evaluated using common 2,2'-azino-di-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) assay for peroxidases. By the variation of enzyme input and crosslinker concentration, a maximal enzyme load of 80 mg/g of textile was achieved, and a maximum specific activity of 57 U/g of textile. For the visualization of the enzyme on the fiber surface, fluorescence microscopy as well as scanning probe microscopy were used. The immobilized peroxidase showed significant activity, even after 50 reuse cycles. In addition, the potential of the new support and enzyme combination in commercial whey bleaching was demonstrated successfully on a 10-L scale.

Biochar amendment mitigates greenhouse gases emission and global warming potential in dairy manure based silage corn in boreal climate

About 11% of the global anthropogenic greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions result from agricultural practices. Dairy manure (DM) application to soil is regarded as a best management practice due to C sequestration and improvement of soil physiochemical properties. However, GHGs emissions from the soil following the DM application could offset its advantages. Biochar (BC) is known to affect N transformation and GHGs emissions from soil. There had been considerably less focus on the BC amendment and its effects on GHGs emissions following DM application under field conditions. The objectives of this study were; i) to determine the temporal patterns and cumulative GHGs fluxes following DM and inorganic nitrogen (IN) application and, ii) to investigate BC amendment impact on DMY, GWP, direct N₂O emission factor (EF_d) and the response of CH₄ emissions (RC) in DM based silage corn. To achieve these objectives a two-year field experiment was conducted with these treatments: 1) DM with high N conc. (DM₁: 0.37% N); 2) DM with low N conc. (DM₂: 0.13% N); 3) IN; 4) DM₁+BC; 5) DM₂+BC; 6) IN + BC; and 7) Control (N₀); and were laid out in randomized complete block design with four replications. BC amendment to DM₁, DM₂ and IN significantly reduced cumulative CO₂ emission by 16, 25.5 and 26.5%, CH₄ emission by 184, 200 and 293% and N₂O emission by 95, 86 and 93% respectively. It also reduced area-scaled and yield-scaled GWP, EF_d, RC and enhanced DMY. Thus, BC application showed great potential to offset the negative effects of DM application i.e GHGs emissions from the silage corn cropping system. Further research is needed to evaluate soil organic carbon and nitrogen dynamics (substrates for GHG emissions) after DM and BC application on various soil types and cropping systems under field conditions.

Molecular identification of genus Duttaphrynus from Punjab, Pakistan

The Indus valley toad and common Asian toad are widely distributed toads in Pakistan. There is doubt in the taxonomic position of species within the genus Duttaphrynus in Pakistan as most of the species identified on morphology. Previously, Bufo melanostictus hazarensis identified on morphology but during the present study, it is confirmed as Duttaphrynus melanostictus-based COI sequences (MK941836). The interspecific divergence between Duttaphrynus stomaticus and D. melanostictus was 16%. The intraspecific divergence of D. stomaticus (MK947909.1) was ranging from 0% to 1% while the intraspecific divergence of D. melanostictus (MK941836) was high ranging from 10% to 11%. Overall, genetic variation between the species of genus Duttaphrynus based on p-distance was 14%. In our recommendation, a large-scale molecular identification of amphibians should take into consideration for exact species identification to report any new species from Pakistan.

First record of Euphlyctis kalasgramensis (Anura: Dicroglossidae) from Punjab, Pakistan

The present study documented the first record of Euphlyctis kalasgramensis from Punjab, Pakistan. The specimens were collected during field visits from June through August 2018. Various morphometric measurements of E. kalasgramensis were taken and compared with Euphlyctis cyanophlyctis. Snout-vent length (SVL) was 38.11 ± 0.87 mm (n = 5), snout length was 3% of SVL, foot length was 55% of SVL, head length was 32% of SVL and weight was 8.01 ± 0.12 g (n = 5). A few specimens (n = 2) were euthanized and preserved for molecular analysis through mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene sequences. The newly obtained DNA sequences of E. kalasgramensis were submitted to GenBank and accession numbers were obtained (MK881165.1 and MK920114.1). The Maximum likelihood and Neighbor-joining trees based on Kimura 2-parameter distance resulted in similar phylogenetic trees. Euphlyctis kalasgramensis was out group in both phylogenetic trees. The interspecific divergence of E. kalasgramensis and E. cyanophlyctis was high ranging from 4% to 6% as compared to low intraspecific divergence 0% and 1%. The diversity and distribution ranges of many amphibians species are not well known in Pakistan due to lack of taxonomic information. In our recommendation, a large scale DNA barcoding is required to report more cryptic or new species from Pakistan.

Nanostrain sensitivity in a wire torsion experiment

The feasibility of a thin-wire torsion stress-strain experiment with nanostrain sensitivity is demonstrated. A gauge length of 50 m was made possible by using The Monument, London, thereby restoring it to its original purpose as a scientific instrument. A wire of 150 μm diameter was studied using the load-unload method, and data were recorded in the elastic regime and through the elastic-plastic transition. Analysis of this preliminary experiment suggested some necessary improvements to the equipment and methods. Progress towards definitive experiments is described together with difficulties still to be overcome.

Does Absenteeism Affect Academic Performance Among Undergraduate Medical Students? Evidence From "Rashid Latif Medical College (RLMC)."

BACKGROUND

Despite the strictness in attendance policies, absenteeism is an important current issue among medical and health sciences that affects the performance of undergraduate students worldwide. Attending lectures is the key to reaping the rewards of academic achievements in undergraduate medical students. As attendance pattern and performance go hand in hand- the physical engagement of students in the classroom and practical teaching approach have a synergistic impact on the output of lower-performing students to do their best.

METHODS

A total of 404 full-time undergraduate MBBS male and female students of Rashid Latif Medical College (RLMC) of age 18 or above were included in this study. The principal outcome variable, such as class grades or performance, is the dependent variable, while absenteeism is a unique independent variable.

RESULTS

Our results capture the positive and significant impact of attendance coefficient in all proxy variables of regression models but exhibit significant decline from OLS3 to OLS4 when proxy variables for ability, effort, and motivation were included. However, we found the effect disappears, when we incorporate panel data fixed effect estimators to minimize the time-invariant student-specific unobservable traits on performance.

CONCLUSION

Attendance of the student is only the mandatory variable that must be monitored and regulated by corrective actions to achieve the better academic performance of the students.

Potential role of root membrane phosphatidic acid in superior agronomic performance of silage-corn cultivated in cool climate cropping systems

The literature is replete with information describing the composition of the root lipidome in several plant species grown under various environmental conditions. However, it is unknown to what extent the root membrane lipidome vary between silage-corn genotypes, and how such variation could influence agronomic performances during field cultivation in cool climate. To address this issue, the root membrane lipidome and agronomic performance were assessed for five silage-corn genotypes (Fusion-RR, Yukon-R, A4177G3-RIB, DKC23-17RIB, DKC26-28RIB) cultivated under cool climatic conditions. Leaf area, plant height and biomass production were used as agronomic performance indicators. Varieties DKC26-28RIB and Yukon-R expressed significantly higher leaf area, plant height and biomass production compared to the other genotypes. A strong positive Spearman rank-order correlation (P = 0.001) was observed between biomass production and root phosphatidic acid (PA). The high correlation observed between PA and agronomic performance indicates PA could potentially be used as biomarker to assist in the selection of silage-corn genotypes with superior agronomic performance ideally suited for field cultivations in cool climatic conditions.

Gastrointestinal helminths in dog feces surrounding suburban areas of Lower Dir district, Pakistan: A public health threat

Data on environmental contamination of the parasites of zoonotic importance is scarce in Pakistan. Soil contamination with feces of dogs hide infective stages of the parasite represents a health-risk to humans. This study was aimed to assess the eggs of gastrointestinal parasites of stray dogs and household dogs in lower Dir district, Pakistan with special consideration to those that can be spread to humans. One hundred and fifty two stool specimens from (stray dogs=90 and household dogs=62) were collected. The helminth eggs were processed by direct smear method and centrifugation techniques and identified by microscopic examination. Of the total examined dogs 26.8% (n=41 /152) were found to be infected with one or more intestinal parasites. The intestinal helminths detected were Dipylidium caninum (n =18, 11.8%), followed by Toxocara canis (n =16, 10.5%), Taenia spp., (n=10, 6.57%) Ancylostoma caninum (n=6, 3.94), Toxascaris spp., Capillaria spp., and Trichuris vulpis (n=2, 1.31% each) in order of their prevalence. Pattern of infection revealed that 27 (65.8%) dogs have single, 13(31.7%) double and 1(2.43%) triple infection. The stray dogs were highly infected 34.4% (n=31) than house hold dogs 16.1% (n=10). The prevalence of infection with intestinal parasites was significantly different among these two groups (p = 0.0097). This study highlight a severe environmental contamination by frequent parasitic stages infectious to humans. There is a higher risk of zoonotic transmission from dogs which indicate an immediate need for the controlling of these parasites and educating the public to take wise action relating to the parasites and pets.

The potential of corn-soybean intercropping to improve the soil health status and biomass production in cool climate boreal ecosystems

Intercropping (IC) is a promising approach used to improve soil health and sustainable crop production. However, it is unknown whether IC improve the soil health status and biomass productivity of crops cultivated in podzols under cool climate in boreal ecosystems. Two silage corn and three forage soybean genotypes were cultivated either as inter or monocrop (MC) treatments in a randomized complete block design. IC resulted in 28% increase in total forage production (FP). A reduction in rhizosphere soil pH (RS-pH) was observed in the IC treatments. Conversely, the rhizosphere soil acid phosphatase (RS-APase) activity was significantly higher (26-46%) in the IC treatments and occurred concomitant with a significant increase in available phosphorus (RS-Pavailable) (26-74%) in the rhizosphere. Furthermore, IC enhanced the active microbial composition and strong positive correlations were observed between RS-Pavailable, RS-APase, microbial biomass and FP; while RS-pH was negatively correlated with FP, RS-APase and RS-Pavailable. These findings suggested silage corn intercropped with forage soybean could be a viable approach to enhance FP through improved active microbial community structure, RS-APase activity and RS-Pavailable when cultivated on podzols in cool climate boreal ecosystem.

The soybean root membrane lipids and forage quality data in response to field cultivation on agricultural podzols in boreal climates

The objective of this data in brief article is to represent the associated data set regarding our published paper in Plant Science Nadeem et al., 2019. Data set represent soil acid phosphatase activity, association of individual molecular species of four major lipid classes with soybean forage quality indices when cultivated in boreal podzolic soils under cool climatic conditions. Phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidic acid (PA) and acylated glucosyl betasitosterol ester (AGIcSiE) molecular species grouped the soybean forage quality indices in different quadrants on principal component analyses. Furthermore, the total lipid profile and correlation of major lipid species with forage quality indices are included in this data in brief article. This data set support the main findings described in Nadeem et al., 2019.

Adaptation strategies of forage soybeans cultivated on acidic soils under cool climate to produce high quality forage

Boreal soils tend to be podzols characterized by acidic pH, which can further limit forage crop growth and production. It is unclear, how forage soybeans adopt to produce forage with high nutritional quality when cultivated on podzols in boreal climate. To answer this question, we cultivated forage soybeans on agricultural podzols at 3 farm sites with varied soil pH (6.8, 6.0 or 5.1), and assessed the root membrane lipidome remodeling response to such climatic conditions. Contrary to our expectations, significantly lower biomass was observed at pH 6.8 compared to 6.0 and 5.1. However, surprisingly the plants produced similar forage quality at 6.8 and 5.1 pH. Three major lipid classes including phospholipids, glycolipids and phytosterols were observed in roots irrespective of soil pH. Phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidic acid (PA), and acylated glucosyl betasitosterol ester (AGlcSiE) accounted for 95% of the root lipidome, and expressed significant changes in response to cultivation across the three soil pH levels. These lipids were also observed to have strong correlations with forage production, and forage quality. Therefore, soybean genotypes with higher abilities to remodel PC, PE, PA, and AGlcSiE could be better suited for producing higher quality forage in acid podzolic soils characteristics of boreal ecosystems.

A State Optimization Model Based on Kalman Filtering and Robust Estimation Theory for Fusion of Multi-Source Information in Highly Non-linear Systems

Consistent state estimation is a vital requirement in numerous real life applications from localization to multi-source information fusion. The Kalman filter and its variants have been successfully used for solving state estimation problems. Kalman filtering-based estimators are dependent upon system model assumptions. A deviation from defined assumptions may lead to divergence or failure of the system. In this work, we propose a Kalman filtering-based robust state estimation model using statistical estimation theory. Its primary intention is for multiple source information fusion, although it is applicable to most non-linear systems. First, we propose a robust state prediction model to maintain state constancy over time. Secondly, we derive an error covariance estimation model to accept deviations in the system error assumptions. Afterward, an optimal state is attained in an iterative process using system observations. A modified robust MM estimation model is executed within every iteration to minimize the impact of outlying observation and approximation errors by reducing their weights. For systems having a large number of observations, a subsampling process is introduced to intensify the optimized solution redundancy. Performance is evaluated for numerical simulation and real multi sensor data. Results show high precision and robustness of proposed scheme in state estimation.

Evaluation of nuclear reaction cross sections via proton induced reactions on 55Mn for the production of 52Fe: A potential candidate for theranostic applications

The proton induced nuclear reactions on ⁵⁵Mn were considered to investigate for the production of ⁵²Fe. The experimental results obtained by ⁵⁵Mn(p,4n)⁵²Fe reaction were compared with the results of nuclear model calculations using the codes ALICE-IPPE, EMPIRE 3.2 and TALYS 1.9. The thick target yields (TTY) of ⁵²Fe were calculated from the recommended excitation functions. Analysis of impurities was also discussed. A comparison of the various radio-impurities showed that for the production of ⁵²Fe via ⁵⁵Mn(p,4n)⁵²Fe reaction, energy ranges from 70→45 MeV could be the method of choice, which gives high yield with minimum impurities to make it as a potential candidate for theranostic applications and in particular, Positron Emission Tomography (PET).
