RGA1 regulates grain size, rice quality and seed germination in the small and round grain mutant srg5

BACKGROUND

Generating elite rice varieties with high yield and superior quality is the main goal of rice breeding programs. Key agronomic traits, including grain size and seed germination characteristics, affect the final yield and quality of rice. The RGA1 gene, which encodes the α-subunit of rice G-protein, plays an important role in regulating rice architecture, seed size and abiotic stress responses. However, whether RGA1 is involved in the regulation of rice quality and seed germination traits is still unclear.

RESULTS

In this study, a rice mutant small and round grain 5 (srg5), was identified in an EMS-induced rice mutant library. Systematic analysis of its major agronomic traits revealed that the srg5 mutant exhibited a semi-dwarf plant height with small and round grain and reduced panicle length. Analysis of the physicochemical properties of rice showed that the difference in rice eating and cooking quality (ECQ) between the srg5 mutant and its wild-type control was small, but the appearance quality was significantly improved. Interestingly, a significant suppression of rice seed germination and shoot growth was observed in the srg5 mutant, which was mainly related to the regulation of ABA metabolism. RGA1 was identified as the candidate gene for the srg5 mutant by BSA analysis. A SNP at the splice site of the first intron disrupted the normal splicing of the RGA1 transcript precursor, resulting in a premature stop codon. Additional linkage analysis confirmed that the target gene causing the srg5 mutant phenotype was RGA1. Finally, the introduction of the RGA1 mutant allele into two indica rice varieties also resulted in small and round rice grains with less chalkiness.

CONCLUSIONS

These results indicate that RGA1 is not only involved in the control of rice architecture and grain size, but also in the regulation of rice quality and seed germination. This study sheds new light on the biological functions of RGA1, thereby providing valuable information for future systematic analysis of the G-protein pathway and its potential application in rice breeding programs.

[Neurobehavioral effects of explosion exposure on acute and chronic traumatic brain injury in rats]

Objective: To explore the effect of nerve injury in rats by neurobehavioral experiments, in order to provide a model and idea for further clarification of the traumatic brain injury mechanism under explosion exposure. Methods: From May 2021 to August 2022, 160 SPF male rats were randomly divided into four groups, including control group, 60 kPa group (low intensity group), 90 kPa group (medium intensity group) and 120 kPa group (high intensity group). The blast induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) model of rats was established by using the shock tube platform to simulate the shock wave parameters of the explosion overpressure of 60 kPa, 90 kPa and 120 kPa. Acute observation was carried out after 24 h and 7 d of explosive exposure, and chronic recovery observation was carried out after 28 d and 90 d. The time effect of shock wave brain injury in different situations was discussed by open field, light dark test, active avoidance test. Finally, the results of brain injury in rats were detected by pathological tissue staining. Results: After 24 h explosion exposure, compared with the control group, the rest time of rats in low and high intensity groups increased, the total movement distance decreased, and the number of visits to the camera obscura decreased, with statistical significance (P<0.05). After 7 days of exposure, compared with the control group, the rest time of rats in high intensity group increased, and the number of visits to the obscura decreased, with statistical significance (P<0.05). After 28 and 90 days of exposure, compared with the control group, there were no significant differences in rest time, total exercise distance and times of visiting the camera obscura in all intensity groups (P>0.05). After 24 h of explosive exposure, compared with the control group, the cell morphology of rats in each intensity group was normal, and no inflammatory cell infiltration was observed. Conclusion: In the acute phase (24 h) of blast exposure, rats have no desire to explore the outside world, and shock wave exposure may damage the neurological function of rats.

From anaerobic digestion to single cell protein synthesis: A promising route beyond biogas utilization

The accumulation of a large amount of organic solid waste and the lack of sufficient protein supply worldwide are two major challenges caused by rapid population growth. Anaerobic digestion is the main force of organic waste treatment, and the high-value utilization of its products (biogas and digestate) has been widely concerned. These products can be used as nutrients and energy sources for microorganisms such as microalgae, yeast, methane-oxidizing bacteria(MOB), and hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria(HOB) to produce single cell protein(SCP), which contributes to the achievement of sustainable development goals. This new model of energy conversion can construct a bioeconomic cycle from waste to nutritional products, which treats waste without additional carbon emissions and can harvest high-value biomass. Techno-economic analysis shows that the SCP from biogas and digestate has higher profit than biogas electricity generation, and its production cost is lower than the SCP using special raw materials as the substrate. In this review, the case of SCP-rich microorganisms using anaerobic digestion products for growth was investigated. Some of the challenges faced by the process and the latest developments were analyzed, and their potential economic and environmental value was verified.

Current management of avascular necrosis of the metacarpal head: a comprehensive literature review

BACKGROUND

Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the metacarpal head is a rare disease that may lead to progressive destruction of the metacarpophalangeal joint and hand function. This study aimed to describe the epidemiology, possible risk factors, clinical presentation, diagnostic workup, and treatment of the rare condition of avascular necrosis of the metacarpal head.

METHODS

Articles were searched using the subject words "Dieterich disease","Mauclaire's disease", and "avascular necrosis of metacarpal head" in the PubMed and Scopus databases. Studies were retained for review after meeting the inclusion criteria. Those outcomes relevant to diagnose and assessing AVN of the metacarpal head and those related to curative management were extracted.

RESULTS

The literature search revealed 45 studies with 55 patients. Although the aetiology of osteonecrosis has not been clearly delineated, AVN of the metacarpal head most commonly arises from trauma but other risk factors may also be involved. Plain radiographs are often negative and therefore likely to be missed. Early-stage osteonecrosis of the metacarpal head was best assessed using MRI. Given the rarity of this condition, there is no clear consensus on the treatment.

CONCLUSIONS

Avascular necrosis of the metacarpal head should be considered in the differential diagnosis of painful metacarpophalangeal joints. An early understanding of this unusual disease will provide an optimal clinical outcome, restoring joint activity, and resolving pain. Nonoperative treatment cannot cure all patients. Surgical management is based on the patient and lesion characteristics.

Advances in mechanism and regulation of PANoptosis: Prospects in disease treatment

PANoptosis, a new research hotspot at the moment, is a cell death pattern in which pyroptosis, apoptosis, and necroptosis all occur in the same cell population. In essence, PANoptosis is a highly coordinated and dynamically balanced programmed inflammatory cell death pathway that combines the main features of pyroptosis, apoptosis, and necroptosis. Many variables, such as infection, injury, or self-defect, may be involved in the occurrence of PANoptosis, with the assembly and activation of the PANoptosome being the most critical. PANoptosis has been linked to the development of multiple systemic diseases in the human body, including infectious diseases, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and inflammatory diseases. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the process of occurrence, the regulatory mechanism of PANoptosis, and its relation to diseases. In this paper, we summarized the differences and relations between PANoptosis and the three types of programmed cell death, and emphatically expounded molecular mechanism and regulatory patterns of PANoptosis, with the expectation of facilitating the application of PANoptosis regulation in disease treatment.

Co-Overexpression of Two Key Source Genes, OsBMY4 and OsISA3, Improves Multiple Key Traits of Rice Seeds

Optimized source-sink interactions are determinants of both rice yield and quality. However, most source genes have not been well studied in rice, a major grain crop. In this study, OsBMY4 and OsISA3, the key β-amylase and debranching enzymes that control transient starch degradation in rice leaves, were co-overexpressed in rice in order to accelerate starch degradation efficiency and increase the sugar supply for sink organs. Systematic analyses of the transgenic rice indicated that co-overexpression of OsBMY4 and OsISA3 not only promoted rice yield and quality, but also improved seed germination and stress tolerance. Moreover, since the OsBMY4 gene has not been characterized, we generated osbmy4 mutants using CRIPSR/Cas9 gene editing, which helped to reveal the roles of β-amylase in rice yield and quality. This study demonstrated that specific modulation of the expression of some key source genes improves the source-sink balance and leads to improvements in multiple key traits of rice seeds.

[Clinical validation of the 2020 diagnostic approach for pediatric autoimmune encephalitis in a single center]

Objective: To evaluate the value of the 2020 diagnostic criteria (Cellucci criteria) for pediatric autoimmune encephalitis (AE) in children with suspected AE in a single center. Methods: The clinical data of 121 children hospitalized at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from October 2019 to October 2021, with a diagnosis of suspected AE, were retrospectively collected and analyzed. The children were divided into definite antibody-positive AE (dAPAE), probable antibody-negative AE (prANAE), possible AE (pAE) and non-AE groups according to the Chinese expert consensus and the Graus criteria. A new diagnosis was made according to the Cellucci criteria which was compared with the clinical diagnosis to evaluate the diagnostic value of the Cellucci criteria. The Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and χ² test were used to compare the differences among groups. The sensitivity and specificity were used to evaluate efficacy of the Cellucci criteria. Results: Among the 121 children, 72 were males and 49 were females, with an age of 10.3 (6.5, 14.0) years at disease onset. There were 99 cases diagnosed as AE according the clinical diagnosis (58 males and 41 females), of which 43 cases were diagnosed as dAPAE, 14 cases as prANAE and 42 cases as pAE, and the other 22 cases were not AE (14 males and 8 females). The top 2 initial symptoms in the 99 children with AE were seizures (53 cases, 53.5%) and abnormal mental behaviors (35 cases, 35.4%). And the most common symptoms during the course of the disease were abnormal mental behaviors (77 cases, 77.8%) and seizures (64 cases, 64.6%). There were statistically differences in the incidence of consciousness disorders, autonomic dysfunctions during the course of the disease and the length of hospitalization among the 4 groups (χ²=21.63, 13.74, H=22.60, all P<0.05). Ninety-six of the 121 children were tested for AE-related antibodies, of which 45 cases (46.9%) were antibody-positive. According to the Cellucci criteria, 42 cases were diagnosed as dAPAE, 34 cases as prANAE and 14 cases as pAE. Compared with the clinical diagnosis, the sensitivity of the Cellucci criteria for the diagnosis of the 3 types of AE were 93.02%, 92.86% and 87.88%, and the specificity were 96.23%, 74.39% and 86.36%, respectively. Conclusions: The Cellucci criteria has a high sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of pAE and dAPAE in the clinical management of children with suspected AE, while a high sensitivity but low specificity for the diagnosis of prANAE. Therefore, it is recommended to apply the Cellucci criteria selectively in clinical practice according to the actual situation, especially in the diagnosis of prANAE.

Observation of Spin Splitting Torque in a Collinear Antiferromagnet RuO_{2}

Current-induced spin torques provide efficient data writing approaches for magnetic memories. Recently, the spin splitting torque (SST) was theoretically predicted, which combines advantages of conventional spin transfer torque (STT) and spin-orbit torque (SOT) as well as enables controllable spin polarization. Here we provide the experimental evidence of SST in collinear antiferromagnet RuO_{2} films. The spin current direction is found to be correlated to the crystal orientation of RuO_{2} and the spin polarization direction is dependent on (parallel to) the Néel vector. These features are quite characteristic for the predicted SST. Our finding not only presents a new member for the spin torques besides traditional STT and SOT, but also proposes a promising spin source RuO_{2} for spintronics.

[Evaluation of developmental toxicity of ammonium dinitramide by micromass culture and embryonic stem cells models]

Objective: To evaluated the potential developmental toxicity and teratogenicity of ammonium dinitroamide (ADN) by micromass test (MM Test) and embryonic stem cell test models. Methods: In September 2018, rat embryos were isolated and limb bud cells were collected. The limb bud cells were treated with different concentrations of ADN (0, 312.50, 625.00, 1250.00, 2500.00, 5000.00, 10000.00 μg/ml) . Half proliferation inhibitory concentration and half differentiation inhibitory concentration were calculated and the teratogenic effects were evaluated according to the criteria. For the embryonic stem cell test, the effects of different concentrations of ADN (0, 39.06, 78.13, 156.25, 312.50, 625.00, 1250.00, 2500.00 μg/ml) on the differentiation of mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs) into myocardial cells and the cytotoxicity of mESCs and 3T3 cells were detected. The embryonic toxicity was evaluated according to the criteria. In this study, both 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) , a known strong embryonic toxic drug, and penicillin-G (P-G) , a non-embryonic toxic drug, were used to verify the effectiveness of the model, and the validated test model was applied to evaluate the embryonic toxicity of ADN. Results: In the MM Test, the inhibition rates of proliferation and differentiation of limb bud cells in ADN groups were higher than that in control group (P<0.05) . And the half proliferation inhibitory concentration and half differentiation inhibitory concentration of ADN on limb bud cells were 7480.32 and 4526.09 μg/ml, respectively. ADN was determined to be non-teratogenic by standard. In the embryonic stem cell test, the inhibition rates of mESCs proliferation in ADN groups were higher than that in control group, and the inhibition rates of 3T3 cells in 156.25, 312.50, 625.00, 1250.00, 2500.00 μg/ml ADN groups were higher than that in control group (P<0.05) . The half proliferation inhibitory concentration and half differentiation inhibitory concentration of ADN on mESCs were 1851.73 and 1796.39 μg/ml, respectively, and the half proliferation inhibitory concentration on 3T3 cells was 3334.35 μg/ml. ADN was determined to be non-embryotoxic by standard. Conclusion: After evaluation by MM Test and embryonic stem cell models, ADN has no embryo toxicity and is a non-teratogenic substance.

Extracellular Vesicles from Human Urine-Derived Stem Cells Ameliorate Particulate Polyethylene-Induced Osteolysis

Purpose

Wear debris particle-induced periprosthetic osteolysis is a severe complication of total joint replacement that results in aseptic loosening and subsequent arthroplasty failure. No effective therapeutic agents or drugs have been approved to prevent or treat osteolysis; thus, revision surgery is often needed. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are vital nanosized regulators of intercellular communication that can be directly applied to promote tissue repair and regeneration. In this study, we assessed the therapeutic potential of EVs from human urine-derived stem cells (USCs) (USC-EVs) in preventing ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) particle-induced osteolysis.

Methods

USCs were characterized by measuring induced multipotent differentiation and flow cytometry. USC-EVs were isolated and characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and Western blotting. RAW264.7 cells and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) were cultured with USC-EVs to verify osteoclast differentiation and osteoblast formation, respectively, in vitro. The effects of USC-EVs were investigated on a UHMWPE particle-induced murine calvarial osteolysis model by assessing bone mass, the inflammatory reaction, and osteoblast and osteoclast formation.

Results

USCs differentiated into osteogenic, adipogenic and chondrogenic cells in vitro and were positive for CD44, CD73, CD29 and CD90 but negative for CD34 and CD45. USC-EVs exhibited a cup-like morphology with a double-layered membrane structure and were positive for CD63 and TSG101 and negative for calnexin. In vitro, USC-EVs promoted the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs and reduced proinflammatory factor production and osteoclastic activity in RAW264.7 cells. In vivo, local injection of USC-EVs around the central sites of the calvaria decreased inflammatory cytokine generation and osteolysis compared with the control groups and significantly increased bone formation.

Conclusion

Based on our findings, USC-EVs prevent UHMWPE particle-induced osteolysis by decreasing inflammation, suppressing bone resorption and promoting bone formation.

[Medication experience of TCM Master Academician Wang Qi in the treatment of premature ejaculation: Data mining and analysis]

Objective

To analyze the academic thought, medication experience and prescription rules of Academician Wang Qi in the treatment of premature ejaculation (PE) using the TCM inheritance support platform (V2.5).

METHODS

We collected and sorted out the medical records on the treatment of PE from Academician Wang Qi's Clinic. We established a database of medical records on the TCM inheritance support platform, analyzed the drugs and prescriptions in the database and explored new prescriptions using "statistical reports" and "data analysis" systems on the platform.

RESULTS

A total of 91 effective prescriptions were recorded, involving 148 TCM drugs, with Phellodendron, Amomum Villosum, Polygala Tenuifolia, Tuckahoe, Lodestone, Oyster, Acanthopanax Senticosus, Uncaria, Tribulus, and Keel as the top 10 with the highest frequency of use, which were featured mainly by "warm" and "cold" concerning the four natures, "sweet", "bitter" and "pungent" relating to the five flavors, and acting on "kidney meridian", "liver meridian" and "heart meridian" in terms of the meridian tropisms. In addition, 5 new prescriptions were obtained through unsupervised entropy hierarchical clustering.

CONCLUSIONS

In the treatment of PE, Academician Wang Qi employs tranquilizing the mind and consolidating the kidney (An Zhi Gu Shen) as the primary strategy, taking into account the three organs of heart, liver and kidneys, focusing on the phase of calming the mind or regulating the liver or clearing the kidney or controlling fire, and adding or reducing drugs according to different conditions and syndromes, which conforms to his diagnosis and treatment mode of "body differentiation－disease differentiation－syndrome differentiation". The analysis of the potential new prescriptions also accords with Academician Wang Qi's rules of medication, which can provide some ideas for the clinical treatment of and scientific researches on premature ejaculation in the future.

Antegrade intramedullary fixation for adolescent fifth metacarpal neck fracture and its impact on epiphyseal growth

Background

Antegrade intramedullary nailing (AIMN) with Kirschner wire (K-wire) is a minimally invasive osteosynthesis technique. This procedure has been widely performed to treat the fifth metacarpal neck fracture (FMNF) in adults. This study was performed to determine whether using AIMN with a single K-wire to treat FMNF in adolescents would have good clinical and radiographic outcomes.

Methods

In this retrospective study, 21 children (aged 11–16 years) with FMNF were treated using AIMN with a single K-wire from May 2017 to January 2020 in our hospital. Indications for intervention were severe displacement with malrotation deformity, apex dorsal angulation of greater than 40°, or both. Collected data included apex dorsal angulation, range of motion (ROM) in the fifth metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint, Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain, grip strength, and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) score.

Results

All patients were followed up for 12–24 months (average, 16.57 months), and all patients obtained anatomical reduction postoperatively. The healing time was 2.69 ± 0.83 months (range, 2–4 months). Average apex dorsal angulation was reduced significantly from 44.49°±2.64° to 15.74°±2.47° (P < 0.001). The average ROM in the MCP joint and apex dorsal angulation of the injured side were not significantly different from those of the uninjured side. The average DASH score was 1.76 ± 1.48 (range, 0–4), the mean VAS was 0.19 ± 0.60 (range, 0–2), and the mean grip strength was 91.55 %±4.52 % (range, 85–101 %). No secondary displacement, dysfunction, nonunion, infection, or osteonecrosis was observed during the follow-up. Although premature epiphyseal closure was found in one patient, no long-term clinical finding of angulation or shortening was identified.

Conclusions

Antegrade intramedullary fixation with single K-wire was an effective and reliable technique that successfully resulted in good functional and cosmetic outcomes for treating adolescents with FMNF. The impact on the growth plate was low in this population given that most patients were at or approaching skeletal maturity.

Conservative management of avascular necrosis of the metacarpal head: A case report and brief review

RATIONALE

Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the metacarpal head is rare, and there is no clear consensus on treatment. The main aim of this study was to discuss the possible pathologic-mechanics of its development, epidemiology, radiographic features, and outcome after conservative treatment.

PATIENT CONCERNS

A 14-year-old male with a history of fractures in little finger complained of right-hand pain with a limited range of motion for 1 month. Diagnosis: Imaging examination confirmed the diagnosis of AVN in the long metacarpal finger and ring finger.

INTERVENTIONS

The patient was treated using non-surgical management, such as splint immobilization, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and physiotherapy.

OUTCOMES

At the last follow-up 26 months later, the patient was in complete remission with no residual symptoms. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed excellent remodeling and regeneration in the metacarpal head.

LESSONS

Metacarpal head necrosis typically occurs in adolescent patients with a history of trauma. Conservative treatment may sometimes have an excellent prognosis.

Interferometric control of magnon-induced nearly perfect absorption in cavity magnonics

The perfect absorption of electromagnetic waves has promoted many applications, including photovoltaics, radar cloaking, and molecular detection. Unlike conventional methods of critical coupling that require asymmetric boundaries or coherent perfect absorption that require multiple coherent incident beams, here we demonstrate single-beam perfect absorption in an on-chip cavity magnonic device without breaking its boundary symmetry. By exploiting magnon-mediated interference between two internal channels, both reflection and transmission of our device can be suppressed to zero, resulting in magnon-induced nearly perfect absorption (MIPA). Such interference can be tuned by the strength and direction of an external magnetic field, thus showing versatile controllability. Furthermore, the same multi-channel interference responsible for MIPA also produces level attraction (LA)-like hybridization between a cavity magnon polariton mode and a cavity photon mode, demonstrating that LA-like hybridization can be surprisingly realized in a coherently coupled system.

High Curie temperature and carrier mobility of novel Fe, Co and Ni carbide MXenes

Two-dimensional (2D) magnets with room temperature ferromagnetism and semiconductors with moderate band gap and high carrier mobility are highly desired for applications in nanoscale electronics and spintronics. By performing the first-principles calculations, we investigate novel Fe, Co, Ni carbide based pristine (M₂C) and functionalized (M₂CT₂, T: F, O, OH) MXenes. Our calculations show that Fe₂C, Co₂C, Ni₂C, Fe₂CF₂, Fe₂CO₂, Fe₂C(OH)₂, Co₂CF₂, Co₂C(OH)₂ and Ni₂CF₂ are dynamically and mechanically stable. More importantly, Fe₂C, Co₂C, Fe₂CF₂ and Fe₂C(OH)₂ exhibit intrinsic ferromagnetism (magnetic moments 2-5μ_B per unit cell). Monte Carlo simulations suggest high Curie temperatures of 590 and 920 K for Fe₂C and Fe₂CF₂, respectively, at the HSE06 level owing to the large spin magnetic moments and strong ferromagnetic coupling. Based on the deformation potential theory, we predict high and anisotropic hole mobility (0.2-1.4 × 10⁴ cm² V^-1 s^-1) for semiconducting Fe₂CO₂ and Co₂C(OH)₂. Additionally, Ni₂CF₂ demonstrates highly anisotropic electron mobility together with a direct band gap. Our results further show the effectiveness of surface functionalization in modulating the electronic and magnetic properties and broadening the properties of MXenes to achieve long-range intrinsic ferromagnetism well above room temperature and high carrier mobility.

[Academician Wang Qi's medication rules for oligoasthenozoospermia: An analysis based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine Inheritance Auxiliary Platform]

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the medication rules for oligoasthenozoospermia (OAZ) observed by Wang Qi, an academician, master of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and initiator of andrology in TCM.

METHODS

We collected the outpatient cases of OAZ treated by Wang Qi and established a database of clinical medical records using the TCM Inheritance Auxiliary Platform. Employing the integrated rule-based system for analysis of the software, we modified the mutual information method, complex system entropy clustering analysis and other data mining methods, and summarized the medication rules Wang Qi followed in the treatment of OAZ.

RESULTS

A total of 134 prescriptions made by Wang Qi for the treatment of OAZ were collected, involving 110 TCM drugs, which are mainly neutral and warm in nature and taste sweet and mostly act through the liver and kidney meridians. The core formula ingredients of the prescriptions included Morinda officinalis, Cuscuta chinensis, Lycium barbarum, Mulberry, Angelica sinensis, Astragalus mongholicus and Fish Maw, and most frequently Morinda officinalis, Cuscuta chinensis, Lycium barbarum and Mulberry.

CONCLUSIONS

Wang Qi holds that kidney deficiency, dampness-heat, blood stasis and toxin are the main pathogenic factors for OAZ. The basic treatment of OAZ is to invigorate the kidney and replenish the essence, and meanwhile activate blood circulation, dissipate stasis and eliminate dampness-heat.

Gibberellin recovers seed germination in rice with impaired brassinosteroid signalling

Seed germination is essential for ensuring grain yield and quality. Germination rate, uniformity, and post-germination growth all contribute to cultivation. Although the phytohormones gibberellin (GA) and brassinosteroid (BR) are known to regulate germination, the underlying mechanism of their crosstalk in co-regulating rice seed germination remains unclear. In this study, the isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) proteomic approach was employed to identify target proteins responsive to GA during recovery of germination in BR-deficient and BR-insensitive rice. A total of 42 differentially abundant proteins were identified in both BR-deficient and BR-insensitive plants, and most were altered consistently in the two groups. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis revealed enrichment in proteins with binding and catalytic activity. A potential protein-protein interaction network was constructed using STRING analysis, and five Late Embryogenesis Abundant (LEA) family members were markedly down-regulated at both mRNA transcript and protein levels. These LEA genes were specifically expressed in rice seeds, especially during the latter stages of seed development. Mutation of LEA33 affected rice grain size and seed germination, possibly by reducing BR accumulation and enhancing GA biosynthesis. The findings improve our knowledge of the mechanisms by which GA and BR coordinate seed germination.

Two new compounds from the roots of Scrophularia ningpoensis and their anti-inflammatory activities

Aiming to investigate the bioactive constituents with anti-inflammatory activity from the roots of Scrophularia ningpoensis, two new compounds (1 and 3) were isolated from the extract of the roots of the plant. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectral analyses (UV, IR, NMR, and MS spectroscopy), as well as experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD) analyses. All of the isolates were tested for their anti-inflammatory properties in terms of suppressing the production of NO in lipopolysaccharide-induced BV2 cells. Compound 2 exhibited stronger anti-inflammatory effects (77.65%) than the positive control curcumin (69.75%) at 10 μM.

[Surgical treatment strategy for endograft infection after thoracic endovascular aortic repair]

Objective: To examine the results of surgical treatment for endograft infection after thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEAVR). Methods: Clinical data of 7 patients underwent surgical treatment for endograft infection after TEAVR at Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Changhai Hospital, the Navy Medical University between January 2016 and December 2018 were analyzed retrospectively. There were 6 males and 1 female, aging (51.5±16.7) years (range: 25 to 68 years). The origin of the aortic disease was descending aortic aneurysm in 5 cases, and Stanford B aortic dissection in 2 cases. Abdominal aorta below the level of the diaphragm was not involved in all patients. Two patients received "chimney technology" for left subclavian artery procedures. Time to infection was 5(3) months (M(Q(R))) (range: 1 to 24 months). Aortic endograft infection was diagnosed with a combination of microbiology (positive blood cultures, except one with mycotic), radiological evidence and clinical evidence of sepsis. Two patients suffered from aorto-esophageal fistula received emergency surgery, others were treated with elective surgery. Extra-anatomic prosthetic graft bypass was used for reconstruction of aorta, infected endogarft and aorta was removed, sac drainage was performed. Aorto-esophageal fistula was procedured according to the degree of lesions. All patients received antibiotics with specialist advice for 6 to 8 weeks. Results: One patient died due to septic shock. In the follow-time (range: 6 to 24 months), 1 patient suffered from thoracic infection in 3 months after surgery, an other patient got iliac abscess after a month. Conclusions: Endograft infection after TEAVR is high risk but may be curative. Appropriate selection of patients for infected endograft explantation could get a satisfied results.

[Medical staff's exposure to solid particles and health impact survey]

Objective: To investigate the current situation of exposure of solid particles in medical staff and the occurrence of related diseases, and to understand the distribution characteristics of occupational exposure and the influencing factors. Methods: In August 2016, the stratified cluster sampling method was adopted to select three tertiary general hospitals with different regions, different administrative levels and departments in Shandong Province. A face-to-face questionnaire survey was conducted on the basic situation of the staff of the hospital, the status of exposure to occupational hazards and the health effects. Two-class logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between medical staff's solid particle contact and occupational health effects. In August 2016, the stratified cluster sampling method was adopted to select three tertiary general hospitals with different regions, different administrative levels and departments in Shandong Province, which were in contact with the basic conditions and occupational hazards of the staff of the hospital. Current situation and health impacts were conducted face-to-face questionnaires. Two-class logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between medical staff's solid particle contact and occupational health effects. Results: The overall contact rate of solid particles of medical staff was 41.5% (1843/4 446) , and the solid particles with the highest contact rate were 28.2% (1254/4 446) of talc dust. There was a statistically significant difference in the contact rate of solid particles between medical staff of different occupations, current working age, education and hospital type (χ(2)=76.30, 41.26, 26.16, 188.97, P<0.05) . There were significant differences in the conditions and types of solid particles in different departments (χ(2)=740.23, P<0.05) . Compared with the control group, the incidence of allergic asthma, chronic tracheobronchitis and dermatitis was higher in the contact group medical staff (P<0.05) . Contact with zirconia dust, talc dust, cotton dust is a risk factor for dermatitis in medical staff (OR=2.09, 1.45, 1.34) ; exposure to zirconia dust and cotton dust is a risk factor for chronic tracheobronchitis in medical staff (OR=2.38, 1.66) ; exposure to zirconia dust, gypsum dust is a risk factor for allergic asthma in medical staff (OR=3.90, 1.52) . Conclusion: The contact rate of solid particles in medical staff is high, and there are many types of contact. Frequent contacted with solid particles is a dangerous cause of related diseases. The working environment of medical staff should be further monitored and be strengthen the targeted protective measures and regulatory systems for the exposure of medical personnel to solid particles.

Improved methane elimination by methane-oxidizing bacteria immobilized on modified oil shale semicoke

Methane is a greenhouse gas with significant global warming potential. The methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) immobilized on biocarrier could perform effectively and environmentally in methane elimination. To further improve the efficiencies of MOB immobilization and methane elimination, the surface biocompatibility of biocarrier needs to be improved. In this work, the oil shale semicoke (SC) was chemically modified by sodium p-styrenesulfonate hydrate (SS) and 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyltrimethylammonium chloride (DMC) to promote surface hydrophilicity and positive charge, respectively. Results revealed that, under methane concentrations of ~10% (v/v) and ~0.5% (v/v), the MOB immobilized on semicoke modified with 1.0 mol L^-1 of SS permitted improved methane elimination capacities (ECs), which were 15.02% and 11.11% higher than that on SC, respectively. Additionally, under methane concentrations of ~10% (v/v) and ~0.5% (v/v), the MOB immobilized on semicoke modified with 0.4 mol L^-1 of DMC held superior ECs, which were 17.88% and 11.29% higher than that on SC, respectively. The qPCR analysis indicated that the MOB abundance on modified semicoke were higher than that on SC. In consequence, the surface biocompatibility of semicoke could be promoted by SS and DMC modifications, which potentially provided methods for other biocarriers to improve surface biocompatibility.

iTRAQ-Based Analysis of Proteins Co-Regulated by Brassinosteroids and Gibberellins in Rice Embryos during Seed Germination

Seed germination, a pivotal process in higher plants, is precisely regulated by various external and internal stimuli, including brassinosteroid (BR) and gibberellin (GA) phytohormones. The molecular mechanisms of crosstalk between BRs and GAs in regulating plant growth are well established. However, whether BRs interact with GAs to coordinate seed germination remains unknown, as do their common downstream targets. In the present study, 45 differentially expressed proteins responding to both BR and GA deficiency were identified using isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ) proteomic analysis during seed germination. The results indicate that crosstalk between BRs and GAs participates in seed germination, at least in part, by modulating the same set of responsive proteins. Moreover, most targets exhibited concordant changes in response to BR and GA deficiency, and gene ontology (GO) indicated that most possess catalytic activity and are involved in various metabolic processes. Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes/Proteins (STRING) analysis was used to construct a regulatory network of downstream proteins mediating BR- and GA-regulated seed germination. The mutation of GRP, one representative target, notably suppressed seed germination. Our findings not only provide critical clues for validating BR–GA crosstalk during rice seed germination, but also help to optimise molecular regulatory networks.

Down-Regulation of SSSII-2 Gene Expression Results in Novel Low-Amylose Rice with Soft, Transparent Grains

Although soft rice, with low amylose content (AC), has high eating and cooking quality (ECQ), its appearance is poor due to the opaque endosperm. Here, a novel soft rice with low AC but a transparent appearance was generated by knocking-down the expression of SSSII-2, a gene encoding one isoform of soluble starch synthase (SSS). The physicochemical properties of the SSSII-2 RNAi rice are quite different from the control but more like the popular soft rice "Nanjing 46". The taste value assay further demonstrated that the ECQ of SSSII-2 RNAi rice was as high as "Nanjing 46", but only SSSII-2 RNAi rice retained the transparent endosperm under low moisture conditions. Further examination showed that the different morphologies and fine structures of the starch granules may contribute to the specific properties of SSSII-2 RNAi rice. Therefore, SSSII-2 has potential application in future high quality rice breeding programs.

Improved methane removal in exhaust gas from biogas upgrading process using immobilized methane-oxidizing bacteria

Methane in exhaust gas from biogas upgrading process, which is a greenhouse gas, could cause global warming. The biofilter with immobilized methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) is a promising approach for methane removal, and the selections of inoculated MOB culture and support material are vital for the biofilter. In this work, five MOB consortia were enriched at different methane concentrations. The MOB-20 consortium enriched at the methane concentration of 20.0% (v/v) was then immobilized on sponge and two particle sizes of volcanic rock in biofilters to remove methane in exhaust gas from biogas upgrading process. Results showed that the immobilized MOB performed more admirable methane removal capacity than suspended cells. The immobilized MOB on sponge reached the highest methane removal efficiency (RE) of 35%. The rough surface, preferable hydroscopicity, appropriate pore size and particle size of support material might favor the MOB immobilization and accordingly methane removal.

[Cross-sectional survey of autism spectrum disorders in children aged 0-6 years in Hainan province]

Objective: To understand the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in children aged 0-6 years old and influencing factors in Hainan province. Methods: A total of 37 862 children aged 0-6 years were selected from 18 counties in Hainan province for a screening by using questionnaire of"warning signs in child development", then field diagnosis was made, and general descriptive statistic analysis was conducted. The prevalence of ASD and related factors were analyzed with χ(2) test and unconditional logistic regression model. Results: Among 37 862 children aged 0-6 years, 235 were diagnosed with ASD, the prevalence of ASD was 0.62% (0.99% in boys, 0.17% in girls), the differences was significant (χ(2)=101.91, P=0.000). The prevalence of ASD increased with age (χ(2)=288.62, P=0.000). The prevalence of ASD was significantly higher in urban area than in other areas (χ(2)=114.77, P=0.000). Factors such as full term pregnancy or not, neonatal asphyxia, father's characteristics, father's habit of chewing areca or smoking, mother's general mood, and mother's induced abortion history were the influencing factors for ASD. Conclusion: The prevalence of ASD in children aged 0-6 years was high in Hainan and was influenced by genetic factors, pregnancy and delivery process, parents unhealthy habit before and during pregnancy and other factors.

Effects of organic loading rate on biogas production from macroalgae: Performance and microbial community structure

Macroalgae biomass has been considered as a promising feedstock for biogas production. In order to improve the efficiency of anaerobic digestion (AD) of macroalgae, semi-continuous fermentation was conducted to examine the effects of organic loading rate (OLR) on biogas production from Macrocystis pyrifer. Results showed that, under OLRs of 1.37, 2.74, 4.12 and 6.85kgVS_substrate/(m³·d), the average unit biogas yields were 438.9, 477.3, 480.1 and 188.7mL/(gVS_substrated), respectively. It indicated that biogas production was promoted by the increased OLR in an appropriate range while inhibited by the OLR beyond the appropriate range. The investigation on physical-chemical parameters revealed that unfavorable VFAs concentration, pH and salinity might be the main causes for system failure due to the overrange OLR, while the total phenols failed to reach the inhibitory concentration. Microbial community analysis demonstrated that several bacterial and archaeal phyla altered with increase in OLR apparently.

Elimination of methane in exhaust gas from biogas upgrading process by immobilized methane-oxidizing bacteria

Biogas upgrading is essential for the comprehensive utilization of biogas as substitute of natural gas. However, the methane in the biogas can be fully recovered during the upgrading process of biogas, and the exhaust gas produced during biogas upgrading may contain a very low concentration of methane. If the exhaust gas with low concentration methane releases to atmosphere, it will be harmful to environment. In addition, the utilization of large amounts of digestate produced from biogas plant is another important issue for the development of biogas industry. In this study, solid digestate was used to produce active carbon, which was subsequently used as immobilized material for methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) in biofilter. Biofilter with MOB immobilized on active carbon was used to eliminate the methane in exhaust gas from biogas upgrading process. Results showed porous active carbon was successfully made from solid digestate. The final methane elimination capacity of immobilized MOB reached about 0.13molh^-1m^-3, which was more 4 times higher than that of MOB without immobilization.

[Change in serum intestinal fatty acid binding protein and its significance in children with pneumonia and gastrointestinal injury]

OBJECTIVE

To study the change in serum intestinal fatty acid binding protein (IFABP) in children with pneumonia and its correlation with gastrointestinal injury.

METHODS

A total of 82 children with community-acquired pneumonia who were treated from January to October, 2015 were enrolled, among whom 34 had mild pneumonia and 48 had severe pneumonia. According to pediatric critical illness score (PCIS), the children with severe pneumonia were further divided into non-critical group (25 patients) and critical group (23 patients). Thirty healthy children who underwent physical examination at outpatient service were enrolled as the control group. ELISA was used to measure serum IFABP level, and the acute gastrointestinal injury (AGI) grade was determined for children with severe pneumonia. Serum IFABP level was compared between groups, and the correlations of IFABP with AGI grade and PCIS were analyzed.

RESULTS

The severe pneumonia group showed a significantly higher serum IFABP level than the control group and the mild pneumonia group (P<0.01), and the mild pneumonia group also showed a significantly higher serum IFABP level than the control group (P<0.01). The critical group showed a significantly higher serum IFABP level than the non-critical group (P<0.01). The patients with grade I-IV AGI had significantly higher serum IFABP levels than the control group (P<0.01), and the serum IFABP level increased significantly with the increasing AGI grade (P<0.01). Serum IFABP level was positively correlated with AGI grade (P<0.01) but negatively correlated with PCIS (P<0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

Children with pneumonia experience an increased serum IFABP level which can be used as a sensitive indicator for the early diagnosis of gastrointestinal injury and the evaluation of conditions in children with pneumonia.

[Methanogenic activity and methanogen diversity in marine gas field sediments]

Methanogens play an important role in marine sediments, which are related to methane production and methane hydrate deposits. Methanogenic activity of marine gas field sediments was investigated using substrates that methanogens usually used as carbon sources. H2/CO2, methanol, methylamines and trimethylamines could support the growth and methane production of gas field sediments. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that the predominant methanogens in the enrichment cultures were related to known cultured methanogens in the family Methanosarcinaceae of the order Methanosarcinales and the family Methanomicrobiales of the order Methanomicrobiales, with genera Methanococcoides, Methanogenium and Methanosarcina as major methanogens.

[Phylogenetic analysis of methanogenic corn stalk degrading microbial communities]

Methanogenic corn stalk degrading enrichment cultures were constructed using corn stalk as the sole carbon source and eight types of environmental samples as inocula. All the cultures could degrade corn stalk within 30-50 days and the total solids (TS) removal rates were in the range of 30%-40%. In six out of eight cultures, the cumulative methane yields per gram TS were 62.1-118.4 mL x g(-1), with acetate, propionate and butyrate as the major volatile fatty acids (100-500 mg x L(-1)), and the final pH were 6.5-6.7. In the other two cultures, the cumulative methane yields per gram TS were 8.5-9.7 mL xg(-1), while the concentrations of acetate were high (1200 mg x L(-1)), and the final pH were low (5.6-5.9). The bacterial and archaeal structures in eight enrichments were investigated with a 16S rRNA genes-based clone library method. Clones belonging to the bacterial phyla Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Synergistetes and Thermotogae were observed in abundance within the bacterial clone libraries, which accounted for 37.8%, 34.3%, 11.6% and 6.4% of the total number of bacterial clones, respectively. Within the domain Archaea, clones affiliated with the classes Methanomicrobia and Methanobacteria were found to be abundant in the archaeal clone libraries, which accounted for 61.1% and 38.9% of the total number of archaeal clones, respectively.

Seebeck rectification enabled by intrinsic thermoelectrical coupling in magnetic tunneling junctions

An intrinsic thermoelectric coupling effect in the linear response regime of magnetic tunneling junctions (MTJ) is reported. In the dc response, it leads to a nonlinear correction to Ohm's law. Dynamically, it enables a novel Seebeck rectification and second harmonic generation, which apply for a broad frequency range and can be magnetically controlled. A phenomenological model on the footing of the Onsager reciprocal relation and the principle of energy conservation explains very well the experimental results obtained from both dc and frequency-dependent transport measurements performed up to GHz frequencies. Our work refines previous understanding of magnetotransport and microwave rectification in MTJs. It forms a new foundation for utilizing spin caloritronics in high-frequency applications.

[Spectral analysis of green pigments of painting and colored drawing in northern Chinese ancient architectures]

It is important to identify pigments of painting and colored drawing in ancient architectures in order to restore and conserve them. The components of green pigments were detected with X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX). Twenty-seven samples were collected from painting and colored drawing in northern Chinese ancient architectures in Beijing, Shanxi province and Gansu province. The experiment results showed that emerald green [CuCH3COO]2 x Cu(AsO2)2], a complex of copper aceto-arsenite pigment, had been used as the colored component in fifteen samples, whereas organic materials synthesized in the rest. However, in all samples there were no malachite and atacamite, green pigments commonly used in ancient time a long time ago. These two pigments have been found in Qin Shihuang's Terracotta Army and the wall paintings at Mogao Grettoes, Dunhuang, and some other famous wall paintings and color pottery figurines. However, emerald green was used many years later. It was reported that emerald green was synthesized by Germany in 1814 and had been widely used in China as watercolor on pith paper works and on scroll paintings since the 1850s. Because painting and colored drawing in ancient architectures stands outside, under sunlight and rain, it must be repaired and repainted in less than fifty years. Therefore, it is not surprising that emerald green was used in them. In recent years, artificial organic materials are increasingly used in painting and colored drawing in ancient architectures. From experiments it was also showed that in the same recolored painting and colored drawing, organic materials are usually in the later layers, but emerald green is in the earlier layers. This work supplies a lot of data for the purpose of selecting restoration materials and identifying painting and colored drawing in ancient architectures with a new method.

[Study on HPLC fingerprint characteristics of Selaginella plants]

OBJECTIVE

To establish a method to analyze HPLC fingerprint characteristics of 10 plants from Selaginella.

METHOD

HPLC was applied for establishment of fingerprints, which were used to evaluate and distinguish the different species of Selaginella.

RESULT

The different species from Selaginella showed different HPLC fingerprint characteristic. The samples of the same species but collected in different period, different environment or different locations showed certain difference in fingerprints

CONCLUSION

2 important mutual fingerprint peaks were found in the 10 plants of Selaginella species and 5 peaks can be used as "main fingerprint peaks". The dates of these peaks can used for assessment of phylogenetic relation among species and evaluation of quality.

Exotic meson decay to omegapi0pi-

A partial-wave analysis of the mesons from the reaction pi(-)p --> pi(+)pi(-)pi(-)pi(0)pi(0)p has been performed. The data show b(1)pi decay of the spin-exotic states pi(1)(1600) and pi(1)(2000). Three isovector 2(-+) states were seen in the omegarho(-) decay channel. In addition to the well known pi(2)(1670), signals were also observed for pi(2)(1880) and pi(2)(1970).

Adsorption of triplet O(2) on Si(100): the crucial step in the initial oxidation of a silicon surface

It has long been understood that a precursor mediated chemisorption is a significant part of the dynamics for the adsorption of O(2) on Si(100), which is a much studied model system of surface reaction with considerable technological relevance. However, theoretical studies on the interaction between O(2) and Si(100) have been focused on the excited singlet state of O2 and unable to explain the observations in surface scattering experiments. We demonstrate by first principles calculations that such a focus is misplaced. In reality, triplet O(2) can also react with Si(100), after overcoming small barriers, and its reaction paths provide a full account for experiments. Our results highlight the important role played by triplet O(2) in surface oxidation.

[Effects of Shenqi compound recipe on cell cycle and apoptosis of ascites inducible hepatocarcinoma cell line H22]

AIM

To observe the effects of Shenqi compound recipe (SQ) on cell cycle and apoptosis of hepatocarcinoma cell line H22 in-vitro and in-vivo.

METHODS

BALB/c mice bearing tumors were perfused with SQ for 10 days running. And then cytotoxic activity of mouse NK cells and macrophages and variation of cell cycle of H22 cells were observed. Inhibition of H22 cell proliferation and induction of the their apoptosis by SQ were analyzed by flow cytometry.

RESULTS

The tumor-suppre ssive rate of SQ was 65.68%. SQ could make H22 cells arrested at the S phase and induce their apoptosis.

CONCLUSION

SQ has significant anti-tumor effect both in-vitro and in-vivo. Its mechanism may be related to blocking of cell cycle and inducing apoptosis of H22 cells.

Differential regulation of beta-arrestin 1 and beta-arrestin 2 gene expression in rat brain by morphine

Beta-arrestins are a family of regulatory and scaffold proteins functioning in signal transduction of G protein-coupled receptors including opioid receptors. Upon agonist stimulation, beta-arrestins bind to opioid receptors phosphorylated by G protein-coupled receptor kinases and promote receptor internalization and desensitization. Studies indicated that beta-arrestins are required in the development of morphine tolerance in mice. In the current study, we investigated the potential regulatory effects of morphine administration on beta-arrestin 1 and beta-arrestin 2 mRNA levels in different brain regions in rat using in situ hybridization method. Our results showed that the acute morphine administration (10 mg/kg) resulted in approximately 30% reduction in both beta-arrestin 1 and beta-arrestin 2 mRNA levels in hippocampus while the chronic morphine treatment (10 mg/kg, b.i.d., for 9 days) caused no significant change in level of either beta-arrestin mRNA. In locus coeruleus, both acute and chronic morphine treatments resulted in significant decreases (over 50%) in beta-arrestin 1 mRNA level but failed to induce any change in the level of beta-arrestin 2 gene expression. The acute morphine administration had no significant effect on beta-arrestin 1 or beta-arrestin 2 mRNA level in periaqueductal gray and cerebral cortex. However, after chronic morphine treatment, beta-arrestin 2 mRNA level decreased by 40% in periaqueductal gray and increased by 25% in cerebral cortex, in strong contrast to the unchanged beta-arrestin 1 mRNA level in these two brain regions. Furthermore, spontaneous or naloxone-precipitated withdrawal of morphine that did not affect the level of beta-arrestin 1 mRNA resulted in an aberrant increase (100% over control) in beta-arrestin 2 mRNA level in hippocampus. Our results thus demonstrated for the first time that opiate administration regulates level of beta-arrestin mRNAs in brain and the expression of beta-arrestin 1 and beta-arrestin 2 subtypes is differentially regulated in locus coeruleus, periaqueductal gray, and cerebral cortex by morphine. These data suggest that beta-arrestin 1 and beta-arrestin 2 may play different roles in the development of opioid tolerance and dependence.

Observation of exotic meson production in the reaction pi- p --> eta'pi- p at 18 GeV/c

An amplitude analysis of an exclusive sample of 5765 events from the reaction pi- p-->eta'pi- p at 18 GeV/c is described. The eta'pi- production is dominated by natural parity exchange and by three partial waves: those with J(PC) = 1(-+), 2(++), and 4(++). A mass-dependent analysis of the partial-wave amplitudes indicates the production of the a2(1320) meson as well as the a4(2040) meson, observed for the first time decaying to eta'pi-. The dominant, exotic (non- qq) 1(-+) partial wave is shown to be resonant with a mass of 1.597+/-0.010(+0.045)(-0.010) GeV/c2 and a width of 0.340+/-0.040+/-0.050 GeV/c2. This exotic state, the pi1(1600), is produced with a t dependence which is different from that of the a2(1320) meson, indicating differences between the production mechanisms for the two states.

[Effects of muscle spindle afferents on the regulation of respiration in rabbit]

Effect of muscle spindle afferent invoked by intraarterial injection of succinylcholine (Sch) on respiration was assessed by changes in unit discharge of respiration related neurons and phrenic nerve of 63 anesthetized, bilaterally vagotomized and artificially ventilated rabbits. The results are as follows. (1) Intra~arterial injection of Sch prolonged inspiratory duration (Ti) or decreased expiratory duration (Te) and augmented respiratory frequency (RF). (2) 66% (37/56) of the medullary inspiratory neurons were excited and 10/17 of the expiratory neurons were inhibited by intraarterial injection of Sch, reaching maximum respectively at 1 2 and 2 3 min after injection, while non-respiration related neurons were not affected. (3) This effect of Sch was suppressed or abolished when muscle spindles were destroyed by intramuscular injection of bupivacaine.

Effects of simulated microgravity on immunoreactivity of conjugated-ubiquitin of muscle spindles of soleus in rats

It is well known that the muscle spindle is a receptor of muscle's tension and length, it plays an important role in maintaining the muscle's tension. The aim of the present study is to compare the cross-section area (CSA) and the immunoreactivity of conjugated-ubiquitin in soleus extrafusal and intrafusal fibers after simulated-microgravity in order to demonstrate the role of muscle spindle in muscle atrophy induced by simulated microgravity.

[Role of red nucleus in inhibiting nociceptive responses of rat spindle afferent]

Using extracellular recording techniques, the effect of excitation of red nucleus (RN) on C-responses of wide dynamic range (WDR) neurons and the roles of RN in the inhibitory effect of spindle afferent activated by succinycholine (SCH) on C-responses of WDR neurons were studied. Stimulation of RN caused a significant reduction of nociceptive responses of WDR neurons, which was significantly attenuated by intravenous cyproheptadine and contralateral lesion of RN. These results suggest that the inhibitory effect on nociceptive responses of WDR neurons caused by RN stimulation was partly mediated by 5-HT and RN plays an important role in analgesia induced by the muscle spindle afferent activity.
