Abstract
Aims In this study, using Beck depression inventory (BDI), we aimed to determine alterations in the emotional state of patients who had impacted third molars (M3) extracted owing to postoperative pain, edema, and trismus.In this prospective clinical trial, which was conducted at Tokat Gaziosmanpasa University, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic, we studied 60 patients (30 males and 30 females), who were 18-47 years old (the mean of 25.6 years of age). The patients with M3 with moderate preoperative pain intensities, edema, and maximal mouth opening (MMO) data were recorded, and BDI was applied to determine their emotional states. The patients were re-evaluated using BDI to detect alterations in their emotional state owing to pain intensity, edema, and trismus on postoperative second and seventh day. Subjects and Methods Descriptive statistical analysis, Chi-square, and independent t-test were utilized to interpret the obtained data. Results According to our findings, a statistically significant relationship was observed between BDI scores and gender on the second postoperative day (P = 0.004), and between MMO and BDI scores on the second and seventh postoperative day (P = 0.012, P = 0.045). Pain intensity scores on the postoperative sixth hour and seventh day were significantly correlated with BDI scores on the postoperative second and seventh day (P = 0.000/ P = 0.000/P = 0.002/P = 0.004/P = 0.010/P = 0.017/P = 0.001/P = 0.000). Conclusions Our results suggest that the pain and trismus owing to the M3 surgery were significantly correlated with an increase in the postoperative BDI scores.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to clinically evaluate the efficacies of three treatment methods and to compare their outcomes in patients with painful disc displacement. The study group comprised 45 patients with unilateral temporomandibular disorders who fell into Axis I group II (with limited mouth opening) of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders. Magnetic resonance imaging was used for definitive diagnosis. The patients were divided randomly into three groups according to the treatment method: splint therapy, splint therapy with ultrasound-guided arthrocentesis, and splint therapy with low-level laser therapy. Patients were followed up after treatment for 6 months. The groups were compared in terms of pain and functional jaw movements (unassisted mouth opening without pain, maximum unassisted mouth opening, and contralateral movements). At the end of treatment, functional jaw movements were significantly increased while pain values were significantly decreased in all groups (P<0.05). Group 2 had a quicker improvement in terms of mouth opening scores at the end of the first month, and unassisted mouth opening without pain was found to be more than 35 millimetres in all groups at the end of 6 months. All treatment modalities showed effective results on pain and functional jaw movements in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the clinical performance and the marginal adaptation of inlay/ onlay restorations made of lithium of a new lithium disilicate strengthened, lithium alumino-silicate glass-ceramic (LAS) material compared with a conventional lithium-disilicate glass-ceramic (LDS) and new-generation polymer-based CAD/CAM resin composite (CS) materials over one year. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy-five inlay-onlay restorations were placed in 35 patients. The restorations were assigned and randomized to three groups as LDS, LAS, and CS. Clinical evaluations were performed after one week, six months, and one year after the cementation, according to the modified United States Public Health Services (USPHS) criteria. The marginal quality analyses of 21 samples (n=7) were assessed under a scanning electron microscope. The data were analyzed by using Friedman, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks, Chi-square and Paired t-tests (p⟨0.05). RESULTS No statistically significant difference (p⟩0.05) was found between groups in the modified USPHS, gingival index, and plaque index evaluations, and the total success rate was 100% for three groups after one year. Following SEM evaluations in all groups, continuous margin percentages were decreased, but these results were not statistically significant (p⟩0.05). CONCLUSIONS Lithium disilicate-strengthened lithium aluminosilicate glass-ceramics can be considered a reliable material for an option for posterior onlay/inlay restorations.

Abstract
A two factor three level factorial design was used to investigate the effects of carbopol and cationic hydrophilic polymers which have a common use in buccal drug formulations. Statistical models with interaction terms were derived to evaluate influence of carbopol (X1) and chitosan (X2) on tablet disintegration (Y1) and dissolution (Y2), mechanical properties (Y3), swelling (Y4). Tablet disintegration studies were carried out using two different pH environments within buccal region pH limits and also two different commonly used dissolution methods for buccal tablets were also investigated to compare the effect of polymer type on dissolution. Polymer type and ratio affect the characteristics of the buccal tablets due to their different physicochemical behavior at buccal pH. Also significant variances between dissolution profiles for buccal tablets, using either USP Paddle or flow through cell methods were found. These results indicate that both polymer type and ratio as well as combination of them effects the drug behavior in different ways.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWMRI) for differentation between Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. PATIENTS AND METHODS Fifty patients (27 Graves diseases and 23 Hashimoto thyroiditis) and twenty healthy volunteers were examined using T1, T2 and DWMRI. The patients were diagnosed on the basis of physical findings and the results of thyroid function tests and serological tests. Circular ROIs were positioned on the bilateral thyroid lobes and isthmus. All measurements were repeated three different b values including 100, 600 and 1000 s/mm2 in all cases. ADC (Apparent diffusion coefficient) maps were calculated automatically with the MR system. RESULTS Mean ADC values were 2.93 × 10-3, 1.97 × 10-3 and 1.62 × 10-3 mm2/s in the healthy volunteers; 3.47 × 10-3, 2.25 × 10-3 and 1.64 × 10-3 mm2/s in Graves' disease; 2.53 × 10-3, 1.76 × 10-3, 1.28 × 10-3 mm2/s in Hashimoto thyroiditis for b100, b600 and b1000, respectively. The ADC values of the Graves diseases were higher than healty volunteers and Hashimoto thyroiditis. ADC values were statistically significant for differentation between Hashimoto thyroiditis and Graves' disease all b values (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS DWMRI is fast sequence and does not require contrast agent. Quantitative assessment of the lesion is possible using ADC map. So, DWMRI may be useful differentiation of the Hashimoto thyroiditis and Graves' disease.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects of taurine (Tau) on experimental acute pancreatitis (AP) in a rat model by measuring cytokines and oxidant stress markers. Forty rats were randomly divided into four groups: sham, AP, Tau and AP + Tau. AP was induced with sodium taurocholate. No treatment was given to the AP. All rats were killed 5 days later. Pancreatic tissues of rats and blood samples were obtained. Tau treatment significantly decreased serum amylase activity ( p < 0.001), total injury score ( p < 0.001), malondialdehyde levels ( p < 0.001) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity ( p < 0.001). There was no significant difference between the Tau and AP + Tau groups in serum and pancreatic tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6 levels ( p = 1.000). Histopathologic scores in the AP + Tau and Tau groups were significantly lower compared with the AP group (both p < 0.001). These results showed that Tau reduces lipid peroxidation, amylase and MPO activities and the concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines secondary to AP and also increases superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities in rats with sodium taurocholate-induced AP. It also has a marked ameliorative effect at histopathologic lesions. With these effects, Tau protects the cells from oxidative damage, reduces inflammation and promotes regression of pancreatic damage.

Abstract
We studied the effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) and zoledronic acid (ZA) on posterior lumbar fusion using a validated animal model. A total of 40 New Zealand white rabbits underwent posterior lumbar fusion at L5-6 with autogenous iliac bone grafting. They were divided randomly into four groups as follows: group 1, control; group 2, HBO (2.4 atm for two hours daily); group 3, local ZA (20 μg of ZA mixed with bone graft); and group 4, combined HBO and local ZA. All the animals were killed six weeks after surgery and the fusion segments were subjected to radiological analysis, manual palpation, biomechanical testing and histological examination. Five rabbits died within two weeks of operation. Thus, 35 rabbits (eight in group 1 and nine in groups 2, 3 and 4) completed the study. The rates of fusion in groups 3 and 4 (p = 0.015) were higher than in group 1 (p < 0.001) in terms of radiological analysis and in group 4 was higher than in group 1 with regard to manual palpation (p = 0.015). We found a statistically significant difference in the biomechanical analysis between groups 1 and 4 (p = 0.024). Histological examination also showed a statistically significant difference between groups 1 and 4 (p = 0.036). Our results suggest that local ZA combined with HBO may improve the success rate in posterior lumbar spinal fusion.

Abstract
Expression of tryptophan-degrading enzyme indoleamine (2,3)-dioxygenase in tumour tissue is proposed to represent an important tumour immunoescape mechanism. To further investigate the potential role of activated indoleamine (2,3)-dioxygenase in bronchus carcinoma, we examined serum tryptophan and kynurenine concentrations in nine patients with small cell lung cancer and in 27 patients with non-small cell lung cancer. Tryptophan metabolic changes were compared with markers of inflammation and immune activation namely C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and neopterin. Compared with controls, patients presented with lower tryptophan concentrations (P < 0.01) and with higher serum kynurenine to tryptophan ratios (P < 0.01), an index of tryptophan degradation. Also ESR and CRP and neopterin concentrations were increased in the patients (all P < 0.001), and there was a weak correlation between kynurenine to tryptophan ratio and ESR, CRP and neopterin concentrations. We conclude that in the majority of patients with non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer, enhanced tryptophan degradation can be observed. It seems to relate to an inflammatory response and may reflect activation of indoleamine (2,3)-dioxygenase at the tumour site. The capacity of the tumour to escape normal host immune defence may be influenced by tryptophan degradation. Results of this pilot study deserve further confirmation.

Abstract
In this study, the effects of periosteal autograft and human amniotic membrane on tendon healing were compared. Forty-two New Zealand rabbits were divided into three groups. Flexor digitorum fibularis tendons were cut and repaired with a modified Kessler technique and circumferential sutures in all groups. Tendon repair alone was carried out in group 1, tendon repair and application of human amniotic membrane was done in group 2 and tendon repair and application of periosteal autograft was done in group 3. Biomechanical and histopathological examinations were done 2 and 6 weeks postoperatively. Biomechanical examination showed that group 3 was the strongest at weeks 2 and 6. Adhesion, inflammation and new bone formation showed no difference between groups at week 2. However, adhesion formation was found to be less in groups 2 and 3 than group 1 at week 6. The application of periosteal autograft might be useful in repair of tendon injuries.

Abstract
Obesity, characterized by hyperleptinemia and hypoghrelinemia, has become a major health problem all over the world and is associated with an increased risk of complications including insulin resistance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis. The use of the pancreatic lipase inhibitor Orlistat can help seriously overweight people to achieve and maintain weight loss. The aim of our study was to compare the serum leptin and ghrelin levels in obese subjects who take orlistat with those receiving only dietary treatment. Twenty-one obese patients and 10 control subjects participated. The obese patients were divided into two groups; one group (n=11) took orlistat (120 mg, 3 times daily) and received dietary treatment and the other (n=10) only received the dietary treatment. The study lasted twelve weeks. The concentrations of serum ghrelin, leptin, insulin and C-peptide, and routine biochemical parameters, were measured in both groups. The serum ghrelin level was higher in control (183+/-62 fmol/ml) than obese (59+/-30 fmol/ml) subjects while the plasma leptin level was lower in control (8.7+/-12 microg/L) than obese (36.7+/-19 microg/L) subjects (all p<0.001). BMI and the total blood cholesterol, LDL and triglyceride levels fell significantly after both orlistat and dietary treatment in the obese subjects (all p<0.01), and the plasma ghrelin level rose (p<0.01). The leptin level demonstrated the opposite trend in both groups but only the patients taking orlistat showed a significant change (p<0.05).Taken together, these results show that orlistat has no effect on body weight in obese subjects additional to that conferred by a non-pharmacological life-style intervention. We therefore conclude that weight lost rather than type of treatment might be more valuable in obesity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hip fractures in the elderly are associated with significant mortality. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for mortality in elderly patients with hip fractures during a one-year period. METHODS This was a prospective study which included consecutive isolated nonpathologic hip fractures in 74 (52 female, 22 male) patients in a level-1 trauma centre. These patients were 65 years or older and were ambulatory before the fracture. The patients were treated with hemiarthroplasty. The factors investigated were age, gender, nutritional status determined by blood albumin and total lymphocyte count, haemoglobin levels on the day of admission, mobilisation time after surgery, length of hospital stay, comorbidities, American Society of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) rating of operative risk, and the time period between injury and surgery. The patients were followed up for one year after surgery, or until death. RESULTS In total, 15 patients died during the one-year period. Patient survival was 94.6 percent at 3 months, 81.1 percent at 6 months and 79.7 percent at 12 months. There were two in-hospital deaths. The factors significantly associated with mortality were patients with more than two comorbidities, an ASA score of III-IV, a blood albumin level of less than 3.5 g/dl and a total lymphocyte count of less than 1500 cells/ml on admission. However, after the multivariate analysis, an ASA score of III-IV, low total lymphocyte count, female gender and low haemoglobin levels on admission remained the independent and significant risk factors associated with a one-year mortality. CONCLUSION This study confirms that a high ASA score, female gender, a lower lymphocyte count and low haemoglobin levels on admission are significant factors in assessing the one-year mortality in elderly patients with hip fractures. Predicting these risk factors improves the case management.

Abstract
The increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from activated neutrophils in Behçet's disease (BD) and recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) may result in increased oxidative stress. Uric acid can react rapidly with neutrophil-derived ROS to form allantoin. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the serum levels of allantoin as a new marker of oxidative stress in BD compared with malondialdehyde (MDA) levels as a well-known marker. Blood samples were obtained from 23 BD patients, 22 RAS patients as positive controls, and 21 healthy controls. When compared to the healthy controls, we found higher allantoin and MDA levels in the BD patients and higher MDA levels in the RAS patients. Serum ascorbic acid levels in the BD patients were significantly lower than in the controls. Increased allantoin and MDA levels suggest the possible involvement of free radicals in BD. As allantoin is only a product of uric acid oxidation by reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, it may also be used as a marker of oxidative stress in BD.

Abstract
Hormone ghrelin and orotic acid accelerate wound healing as well as controlling inflammation and immunity. We have, therefore, investigated the serum and milk levels of ghrelin and orotic acid in dairy cows with (n = 21) or without (n = 21) subclinical mastitis. Acylated and des-acylated ghrelin as well as orotic acid concentration were detected by using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results revealed that ghrelin level in milk and serum was significantly higher in dairy cows with subclinical mastitis than that of dairy cows without subclinical mastitis. This was also the case when the orotic acid concentrations in dairy cows with subclinical mastitis were compared with those dairy cows without subclinical mastitis. In conclusion, ghrelin and orotic acid occur in particularly high concentrations in subclinical mastitis, and might, therefore, be required in greater amounts for tissue repair and may be also used as a indicator for subclinical mastitis.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of raloxifene (RLX) and tibolone (TBN) on plasma homocysteine (Hcy) levels and their relationship with atherosclerotic changes in the walls of the carotid artery in ovariectomised rats. Thirty surgically ovariectomised Wistar albino rats after a menopausal period of 6 cycles were randomly assigned to receive RLX 0.01 mg/kg/day (n=10), TBN 0.04 mg/kg/day (n=10) and the same dose of placebo (n=10) for 6 cycles. Serum levels of vitamin B12, folate and Hcy were measured and carotid arteries were examined histopathologically following the termination of treatment. Hcy levels were 3.27+/-0.97, 2.57+/-0.32 and 2.28+/-0.12 micromol/l, Vitamin B12 levels were 901.90+/-239.76, 694.70+/-112.20 and 631+/-309.44 pg/ml and folate levels were 73.80+/-12.71, 72.51+/-7.05 and 84.79+/-20.82 ng/ml in receiving RLX, TBN and placebo respectively. Hcy levels were increased by RLX vs. placebo (P=0.006) but not by TBN vs. placebo (P=0.070). Vitamin B12 levels were found to be elevated by TBN vs. the control group (P=0.041) but not by RLX vs. placebo (P=0.059). Histopathological examination of carotid arteries from rats receiving both RLX and TBN revealed no difference vs. placebo. Data obtained from the study support the view that neither RLX nor TBN appears to have a primary protective effect on vascular disease by effecting the metabolism of Hcy at menopause.

Abstract
The release of ketoprofen incorporated into modified release ketoprofen microsponge 200 mg tablets and Profenid Retard 200 mg was studied in vitro and in vivo. The formulation containing ketoprofen microsponges yielded good modified release tablets. An in vivo study was designed to evaluate the pharmacokinetic parameters and to compare them with the commercially available ketoprofen retard tablets containing the same amount of the active drug. Commercial ketoprofen retard tablets showed a more rapid absorption rate than modified release tablets and peak levels were reached within almost 3.6 h after administration. However, the new modified release tablets showed a slower absorption rate and peak levels were reached 8 h after administration.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Behçet's disease is a rare, chronic disorder. The cause of Behçet's disease is unknown. It is believed to be caused by an autoimmune reaction. As in other chronic autoimmune diseases, Behçet's disease may show a subclinical adrenal failure and some changes in cortisol levels. We aimed to evaluate adrenal gland function in Behçet's disease patients. MATERIAL AND METHOD This study included 18 Behçet's disease patients and 15 healthy controls. Patient and control groups were administered i.v. 1 microg low dose test (LDT) and 250 microg standard dose test (SDT) adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation test after 12 h of night fasting with an interval of 3-days and cortisol responses in the 0th, 30th and 60th minutes were evaluated. RESULTS There was no statistically significant difference between basal cortisol values of Behçet's disease and control groups. Cortisol values in the 60th minute in LDT were significantly lower in Behçet's disease group than in the control group. In the peak cortisol responses to LDT, a significant decrease was found in Behçet's disease group. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that hypothalamo-pituitary adrenal axis is partially suppressed in Behçet's disease.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare colour stability of pink and white acetal resin with one conventional poly (methylmethacrylate) resin. Five specimen disks 50 +/- 0.1 mm in diameter and approximately 1.0 mm thick were prepared from each material. The discs were hydrated for a period of 30 days in distilled water and were then desiccated to a constant weight. Total of fifteen specimens were thermocycled for 100 and 300 hours (4000-12000 cycle) between water baths of 5-55 degrees C. Changes from baseline colour readings were recorded at each interval. Data were analysed with descriptive statistic, repeated measured analysis of variance and single factor analysis of variance. The colour changes for all materials at 100 hours were in the categories of slight, based upon the National Bureau of Standard System (NBS) for expressing colour difference. At 300 hours, the colour changes of materials were significantly different (p = 0.0001). All the materials tested showed clinically acceptable discolouration values.

Abstract
A HPLC method for zalcitabine determination in bulk form, pharmaceutical dosage forms and human serum has been developed and validated. The proposed method was conducted using a reverse phase technique, and UV monitoring at 265 nm. The mobile phase consisted of methanol: 0.01 M NaH2PO4 (85:15; v/v) adjusted to pH 4.62 with 1 M NaOH. The detector response was linear in the range of 0.015-50 microg mL(-1). The limit of detection and the limit of quantification of the procedure were 0.0066 microg mL(-1) and 0.022 microg mL(-1), respectively. The retention time was 2.5 min for zalcitabine and 3.5 min for the internal standard. No interferences from tablet additives were observed and analysing tablets containing zalcitabine proved the applicability of the method. This method was also applied for the determination of zalcitabine in spiked human serum samples.

Abstract
Potential beneficial effects of outer and inner ostrich eggshell membranes alone and in combination with the shell powder on bone regeneration in cranial defects of 18 rabbits were investigated using radiological, clinical and histological methods. Three 6 mm wide, half-thickness defects were made in the calvarial bones of each rabbit. One defect remained empty as a control; prepared eggshell membranes were extended across the other two defects; and prepared eggshell powder was inserted inside the membrane in one case. Either alone or in combination with eggshell powder, the outer and inner ostrich eggshell membranes produced little adjunctive effect under the conditions and duration of this experiment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate periodontal conditions, prevalence and determination of dental caries and oral health behaviours in a group of young people in Istanbul. DESIGN Subjects were orally examined and questioned. SETTING A high school in Istanbul. SUBJECTS One hundred of fifty students. RESULTS This study showed that 28 per cent of teenagers had adequate oral hygiene. These findings suggest that 72 per cent of the subjects needed oral hygiene education and required restorative dental care. CONCLUSIONS The present study showed that dental treatment need is very high in the sample group. Strong co-operation should be set up between families, schools, communities, regulators and legislators in order to develop and implement comprehensive oral health promotion programmes.

Abstract
The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the color stability of commercially available porcelain, reinforced acrylic, and conventional acrylic denture teeth materials used in removable prostheses. Two brands of porcelain (Unilux-Enta Lactona-Holland and Vivoperl-Ivoclar-Liechtenstein), 2 brands of reinforced acrylic (Optodent-Bayer-Germany and Ivolek-Ivoclar-Liechtenstein), and 2 brands of conventional acrylic (Isodent-Güney Diş Deposu-Turkey and Samed-Turkey), were made, for a total of 6 different denture teeth groups. Denture teeth were subjected to 3 staining solutions (filtered coffee, tea, and cola) and distilled water. From each group of denture teeth, 4 sets of maxillary anterior denture teeth were immersed in each of the 4 solutions. The color values of denture teeth were measured colorimetrically with the Gardner XL 20 Tristimulus Colorimeter (Gardner Lab. Inc., Bethesda, Maryland, USA). Color changes were characterized in the CIEL*a*b* color space. Color change values were determined after 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks. The color difference values were calculated and then evaluated by two-way ANOVA statistically. The filtered coffee solution was found to be more chromogenic than the other 2 staining solutions, while porcelain denture teeth materials were more color stable. Assuming the color change of deltaE* < 1.0 as a discernible limit and deltaE* = 3.3 as an acceptable value, the filtered coffee, tea, and cola had slight staining effects on all 6 groups of denture teeth.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To measure the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of lipid peroxidation, in patients with breast and lung cancer. METHOD Analysis of plasma MDA, and serum uric acid, albumin, cholesterol and triglycerides in 26 breast and 12 lung cancer patients and 41 healthy controls. The effects of age, body mass index (BMI), and menopausal status on plasma MDA were evaluated in the 26 patients with breast cancer. RESULTS Plasma MDA levels in cancer patients were significantly higher than those in controls (P < 0.001). Average MDA levels were 6.33 micromol/L in breast cancer patients and 5.87 micromol/L in lung cancer patients. There was no correlation between MDA and triglyceride levels in either controls or cases. There was no correlation between MDA and cholesterol levels in patients with breast cancer, but there was a correlation in patients with lung cancer. Albumin levels did not differ significantly between controls and cases (P > 0.05), but uric acid levels in breast cancer patients were significantly higher than those of controls (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION The results of this study provide further evidence of the relationship between lipid peroxidation and cancer and should contribute to the interpretation of epidemiological studies in this area and the planning of future research.

Abstract
A new, simple, precise and rapid high performance liquid chromatographic method was developed for the determination of meropenem in human serum, urine and pharmaceutical dosage forms. Chromatography was carried out on an LC(18) column using a mixture of 15 mM KH(2)PO(4):acetonitrile:methanol (84:12:4; v/v/v), adjusted to pH 2.8 with H(3)PO(4). The proposed method was conducted using a reversed-phase technique, UV monitoring at 307.6 nm and cefepime as an internal standard. The retention times were 5.98 and 7.47 min for cefepime and meropenem, respectively. The detector response was linear over the concentration range of 50-10,000 ng/mL. The detection limit of the procedure was found to be 22 ng/mL. The detection limit for meropenem in human plasma was 108.4 ng/mL and the corresponding value in human urine was 179.3 ng/mL. No interference from endogenous substances in human serum, urine and pharmaceutical preparation was observed. The proposed method is sufficiently sensitive for determination of the concentrations of meropenem and may have clinical application for its monitoring in patients receiving the drug.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare topographic indices of surface regularity in dry eye patients and in normal subjects (controls) and to investigate the short-term effect of lacrimal punctal plugs on these indices in dry eye patients. METHODS The surface regularity index (SRI) and surface asymmetry index (SAI) of the TMS-2 corneal topographic modelling system were used to evaluate corneal surface regularity in 20 eyes of 10 dry eye patients before and after the insertion of Herrick silicon lacrimal plugs (Lacrimedics, Rialto, CA, USA) and in 24 eyes of 12 normal subjects as controls. RESULTS SRI and SAI were significantly lower in controls than dry eye patients (p=0.00). Median SRI was 1.72 in dry eye patients before punctal occlusion and 0.525 in the control group. Median SAI was 1.305 in dry eye patients and 0.240 in controls. After lacrimal punctal occlusion, Schirmer test results and fluorescein breakup time increased in nine patients and remained the same in one patient. After occlusion, the SRI decreased in 9 eyes, and increased in 11 (p=0.970); SAI decreased in 13 eyes and increased in 7 (p=0.135). CONCLUSIONS No significant change in topographic indices of corneal surface irregularity could be detected in severe dry eye patients with lacrimal punctal plugs in the short-term follow-up.

Abstract
The application of the ratio spectra derivative spectrophotometry and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to the simultaneous determination of paracetamol (PAR) and methocarbamol (MET) in combined pharmaceutical tablets is presented. The spectrophotometric procedure is based on the use of the first derivative of the ratio spectra obtained by dividing the absorbtion spectrum of the binary mixtures by a standard spectrum of one of the compounds. The first derivative amplitudes were measured at 243.0 and 230.3 nm for the assay of PAR and MET, respectively. Calibration graphs were established for 2-30 microg ml for PAR and 2-36 microg/ml for MET in binary mixture. The detection limits for PAR and MET were found 0.097 and 0.079 microg/ml, respectively; while the quantification limits were 0.573 microg/ml for PAR and 1.717 microg/ml for MET. For the HPLC procedure, a reversed-phase column with a mobile phase of methanol-water (60:40, v/v), was used to separate both compounds with a detection of 274.0 nm. Linearity was obtained in the concentration range of 2 300 and 1.5-375 microg/ml for PAR and MET, respectively. The detection and quantification limits were found to be 0.42 and 1.4 microg/ml for PAR and 0.36 and 1.2 microg/ml for MET, respectively. The relative standard deviations were found to be less than 0.52%, indicating reasonable repeatibility of both methods. The proposed methods were successfully applied to the determination of these drugs in commercial tablets.

Abstract
Micropheres are drug carrier system which ensures controlled release in the shape of solid sphere particles with variable diameter distributions from a few microns to a milimeter of size. The active substance is dispersed in molecular level or in forms of macroscopic particles. Clarithromycin was selected as the model active substance in our study. Clarithromycin microspheres were prepared and evaluated by an emulsion polymerization technique. Two matrix materials have been considered as the basis in preparing the selected model active substance. Natural human serum albumin and bovine serum albumin, which were frequently used in early microsphere studies and are being used in some studies as microshpere matrix material were used. Albumin microspheres containing clarithromycin were prepared by heat stabilization at different stirring rate. In the first part of our study, drug content, payload, particle size, surface morphology and release characteristics from microspheres prepared.

Abstract
For the purpose of enhancement the bioavailability of furosemide (FR), a floating dosage form with controlled release of FR was designed in this study. Because of the lower solubility of active material in the gastric medium, it was first enhanced by preparing an inclusion complex of FR with beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) in a 1:1 proportion using the kneading method. Following the design of dosage form, bilayer floating tablets were prepared. After dissolution rate studies were performed using the continuous flow-through cell method, the formulation that provided delivery of active material near the target profile was given to six healthy male volunteer subjects, and in vivo tests were performed. It was determined by radiographs that floating tablets prepared by adding BaSO4 stayed in the stomach for 6 hr. Further, values of the area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) obtained with the floating dosage form were about 1.8 times those of the conventional FR tablet in blood analyses; maximum and minimum plasma concentrations were also found to be between the desired limits. In urine analyses, the peak diuretic effect seen in classical preparations was decreased and prolonged in floating dosage forms. Also, a considerably significant correlation was detected between in vivo results and in vitro data of the dissolution rate, and it was concluded that the modified continuous flow-through cell method is usable for in vitro dissolution rate tests of floating dosage forms.

Abstract
Pharmaceutical availability or in vitro availability is one of the aspects of drug bioavailability. Dissolution can be described best as a tool that can provide valuable information about the availability of a drug product. Dissolution test was performed on three different designed and formulated of salbutamol tablet formulations marketed in Turkey. The test methods were the paddle method and the rotating basket method described in United States Pharmacopeia. All studied formulations showed a good agreement with pharmacopeial requirements. In particular all studied commercial tablet formulations showed a quite fast release of the antiasthmatic drug. Other type of table formulations showed slow release. In order to evaluate the dissolution rates five different kinetics have been examined and the best fitting kinetics was found to be RRSBW kinetic.

Abstract
Simple, rapid and reliable spectroscopic methods (absorbance ratio and Vierordt) were compared with HPLC for quantitative determination in dissolution tests of benazepril-HCl (BNZ) and hydrochlorothiazide (HCT) in commercial tablets. A 249 nm wavelength was chosen as the isosbestic point in the absorbance ratio method, and the absorbance ratios A236/A249 nm for BNZ and A269/A249 nm for HCT were used for calculation of regression equations. For the Vierordt method, A1(1) values (%1.1 cm) obtained at 236 and 269 nm for both substances were used for quantitative analyses of BNZ and HCT. In the HPLC method, simultaneous determination of BNZ and HCT from dissolution medium was achieved using the mobile phase containing phosphate buffer (0.01 M, pH 6.2) and acetonitrile (65:35) on a Supelcocil LC-18 (4.6 x 250, 5.6 mm) reversed phase column. Dissolution tests of commercial tablets were carried out according to USP XXII paddle method in 0.1 N HCl at 50 rpm at 37 +/- 0.5 degrees C. Comparison of the dissolution data from the HPLC and two spectroscopic methods indicated that spectroscopic and HPLC methods were in good correlation with each other. Therefore, it was concluded that both spectroscopic methods as well as HPLC can be used in routine analyses of BNZ and HCT in dissolution tests of commercial tablets.

Abstract
This work examines the release of etodolac from various molecular weight fractions of polyethylene glycol (PEG) solid dispersions. Solid dispersions of etodolac were prepared in different molar ratios of drug/carrier by using solvent and melting methods. The release rate of etodolac from the resulting complexes was determined from dissolution studies by use of USP dissolution apparatus 2 (paddle method). The physical state and drug:PEG interaction of solid dispersions and physical mixtures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The dissolution rate of etodolac is increased in all of the solid dispersion systems compared to that of the pure drug and physical mixtures. The solid dispersion compound prepared in the molar ratio of 1:5 by the solvent method was found to have the fastest dissolution profile. The physical properties did not change after 9 months storage in normal conditions.

Abstract
In this study, the effects of surface-active agents in different types and concentrations, added into the coating solution, on release of model hydrophilic compound have been examined. For this purpose, the tablets, prepared with the use of methylene blue as a model substance, were coated by spray coating technique with cellulose acetate solution containing polyethylene glycol 400 as a plasticizer. In addition, cetylpyridinium chloride as cationic surface-active agent and sodium lauryl sulphate as anionic surface-active agent were added into coating solution in different concentrations. After creating a delivery orifice by a microdrill on the tablets, release of model hydrophilic compound was tested by the USP paddle method. The data obtained were evaluated according to the different kinetics and the mechanism of release from the preparations was examined. The surface properties of the coating material were investigated by scanning electron microscope taken before and after the contact with medium fluid, as well as the mechanical properties by tensile tests. In conclusion, it has been found that the cationic surface active agent, cetylpyridinium chloride reduced the lag time, observed during the release of model hydrophilic compound, as a result of its enhancing effect on wettability of tablets by reducing the contact angle between the medium fluid and the coating material. On the other hand, the anionic surface active agent, sodium lauryl sulphate has been inactivated possibly due to the interaction with model hydrophilic compound that has cationic properties and/or substances contained in membrane composition; thus, the lag time has not decreased and furthermore, a significant decrease in the delivery rate of model hydrophilic compound has been observed.

Abstract
A high-performance liquid chromatographic procedure with two detectors is presented for the determination of verapamil in pharmaceutical dosage forms. The procedure is based on the use of reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with UV and fluorimetric detectors. Each analysis required no longer than 6 min for both detection procedures. Quantification was achieved by measurement of the ratio of the peak area of the drug to the internal standard (fluoxetine) and the detection limit was 10 ng/ml for the UV detector and 750 pg/ml for the fluorimetric detector. There was no significant difference between inter- and intra-day studies for verapamil determined for two different concentrations (0.05 and 1.00 microgram/ml). This process could be used to determine verapamil concentrations in the range 0.025-50 and 0.0008-20 micrograms/ml for UV and fluorimetric detection, respectively. These methods were applied, without any interference from the excipients, for the determination of the drug in tablets and in drug dissolution studies. It is suggested that the proposed HPLC procedures could be used for routine quality control and dosage form assay of verapamil hydrochloride.

Abstract
Inclusion complexes of gliclazide with beta-cyclodextrin were prepared using different two methods: neutralization and recrysstalization. Host-guest interactions were studied in the solid state by X-ray diffractometry and infrared spectroscopy. The stability constant between gliclazide and beta-cyclodextrin was calculated from the phase solubility diagram. It was found that the neutralization technique and a solid complex of gliclazide with beta-cyclodextrin in a molar ratio of 1.5:1 could be used to prepare the amorphous state of drug inclusion complexes. The dissolution rates of gliclazide from the inclusion complex made by neutralization was much faster than the pure drug, physical mixture of drug and cyclodextrin, recyristalization system and also comparable to the data reported in literature. Results of this report indicate that beta-cyclodextrin could be useful for the solid gliclazide formulations as it may results in a more rapid and uniform release of the drug.

Abstract
Microspheres of clarithromycin have been prepared from human serum albumin using the emulsion polymerization technique. Albumin microspheres containing the active substance were injected into the tail vein of mice. Mice were sacrificed at intervals and microspheres collected from lungs and livers. The clarithromycin amount in microspheres was determined by reversed phase high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method from the mice organs. Morphological and histopathological observations were also reported. The microsphere accumulation began at 10 min, and increased gradually until 6 h, then a decrease was observed. The microspheres were still present after 24 h. In the liver sample, no microsphere accumulation was observed at any time.

Abstract
The oxidative voltammetric behaviour of zuclopenthixol (ZPT) at a glassy carbon has been studied using cyclic, linear sweep and differential pulse voltammetry. Oxidation of the drug produced three pH dependent anodic steps (representing an irreversible oxidation). Using differential pulse voltammetry, the drug yielded a well-defined voltammetric response in phosphate buffer, pH 5.2 at + 0.82 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). This process could be used to determine ZPT concentrations in the range 8 x 10(-7)-2 x 10(-4) M. The method was applied, without any interferences from the excipients, to the determination of the drug in tablets and oral drops, and in drug dissolution studies.

Abstract
Dissolution can best be described as a tool that can provide valuable information about the availability of a drug product. In this study, nine different paracetamol tablet dosage forms available on the Turkish Drug Market have been investigated and physical controls were realized. Paddle and rotating basket apparatus methods were applied to all the formulations. In order to evaluate the dissolution rates, five different kinetics have been studied and the best fitting kinetics was found to be the Hixson-Crowell kinetics. It was found that all the preparations are in accordance with the Pharmacopeia standards.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anal fissure in children usually is treated by sitz baths, stool softeners, and analgesic ointments. However, some cases are intractable to the treatment. In recent years, it has been reported that nitric oxide donors such as local glyceryl-trinitrate (GTN) ointment causes a reversible chemical sphincterotomy. Although the GTN ointment can be an alternative therapy for adult cases, it has not yet been studied in the children who suffer from anal fissure. METHODS Sixty-five children with anal fissure were divided randomly into 3 groups. Each group received double-blinded a topical ointment that contained either 0.2% GTN, 10% lidocaine, or placebo. These ointments were applied to the lowest part of the anal canal twice daily. Patients were periodically reviewed, and the study was ended after 8 weeks. RESULTS Complete healing of the fissure occurred in 26 of 31 (83.9%) patients treated with GTN, 7 of 14 (50%) patients treated with lidocaine, and 6 of 17 (35.2%) treated with placebo. In 29 of 31 (93.5%) GTN-treated patients, a total relief of symptoms was observed, whereas this occurred in 7 of 14 (50%) treated with lidocaine and 6 of 11 (35.3%) in the placebo group. The differences between the study group and control groups were highly statistically significant (P < .001). CONCLUSION The majority of children suffering from anal fissure will be cured and have relief of symptoms after topical application of GTN ointment to the anal canal.

Abstract
A voltammetric method has been developed for the determination of metronidazole in dosage forms. The method is based on the electrochemical reduction of the drug at a glassy carbon electrode activated by applying a new pretreatment. The influence of pH, concentration, scan rate and presence of organic solvent and surfactant has been studied. The current is proportional to the concentration and permits the drug to be determined in the concentration range 2 x 10(-6)-6 x 10(-4) M in Britton-Robinson buffer (pH 10). Furthermore, results obtained by the proposed method have been compared with USP XXIII procedure which involves a HPLC method.

Abstract
The electrochemical properties of nifedipine have been investigated in aqueous solution by linear sweep and cyclic voltammetry. The method is based both on the reduction and on the oxidation of the drug at a glassy carbon electrode activated by applying a new pre-treatment. The voltammograms of nifedipine on pH, concentration and scan rate have been carefully examined. Both the electroreduction and electrooxidation of nifedipine allow its determination at pH 1.5 in the concentration range of 2 x 10(-5)-6 x 10(-4) M and 8 x 10(-5)-1 x 10(-3) M, respectively. The method has been applied to commercial samples (tablets and capsules).

Abstract
In this study a total of 305 adult fibulae were examined to determine the number and location of the nutrient foramina in the shafts of bones. Of 305 fibulae, 281 had one foramen, 12 had two and the remaining 12 had no foramen. The foramina were seen primarily on the posterior surface (48.36%) and in the middle third (98.00%) of the bone. The mean foraminal index of the fibula was found to be 48.14 +/- 0.46.

Abstract
In this study a total of 269 adult lower limb long bones were examined to determine the number and location of the nutrient foramina in the shafts of bones. The mean of foraminal index was 48.82 for femur, 33.17 for tibia, and 47.82 for fibula. The number of foramina noted were: two on the linea aspera in the middle third of the femur, one on the posterior surface of the upper third of the tibia, and one on the posterior surface of the middle third of the fibula.

Abstract
Two hundred ninety-four stool sample obtained from primary schools of different social status and environmental conditions were examined for intestinal parasite. The age range was between seven and 13 years, 43% of the patients were females and 57% of the patients were males. In our study it has been observed that the parasite incidence was 29.3%. The predominant parasite was Giardia intestinalis (15.7%). Enterobius vermicularis (10.5%) and Ascaris lumbricoides (2.3%) have been followed respectively. There were three different parasites in the primary school of good social status and environmental conditions. In the contrary in the village school, there were five different parasites. In the conclusion parasite incidence was high in our region. In primary schools of different conditions there were no difference Giardia intestinalis but there were marked difference in the other parasites.
