Identifying crustal contributions in the Patagonian Chon Aike Silicic Large Igneous Province

The volcanic rocks of the Chon Aike Silicic Large Igneous Province (CASP) are recognized as magmas dominantly produced by crustal anatexis. Investigating the zircon of the CASP provides an opportunity to gain further insight into geochemical and isotopic differences of the potential magmatic sources (i.e., crust versus mantle), to identify crustal reservoirs that contributed to the felsic magmas during anatexis, and to quantify the contributions of the respective sources. We present a combined zircon oxygen and hafnium isotope and trace element dataset for 16 volcanic units of the two youngest volcanic phases in Patagonia, dated here with LA-ICP-MS U-Pb geochronology at ca. 148-153 Ma (El Quemado Complex, EQC) and ca. 159 Ma (western Chon Aike Formation, WCA). The EQC zircon have 18O-enriched values (δ18O from 7 to 9.5‰) with correspondingly negative initial εHf values (- 2.0 to - 8.0). The WCA zircon have δ18O values between 6 and 7‰ and εHf values ranging between - 4.0 and + 1.5. Binary δ18O-εHf mixing models require an average of 70 and 60% melt derived from partial melting of isotopically distinct metasedimentary basements for the EQC and WCA, respectively. Zircon trace element compositions are consistent with anatexis of sedimentary protoliths derived from LIL-depleted upper continental crustal sources. The overlap between a high heat flux environment (i.e., widespread extension and lithospheric thinning) during supercontinental breakup and a fertile metasedimentary crust was key in producing voluminous felsic volcanism via anatexis following the injection and emplacement of basaltic magmas into the lower crust.

210Pb geochronology and metal concentrations in sediment cores recovered in the Alvarado Lagoon system, Veracruz, Mexico

Three sediment cores recovered from the Alvarado Lagoon System (ALS) in the Gulf of Mexico were used to reconstruct the history of metals and metalloids and their environmental importance. The sedimentary profiles were dated with ²¹⁰Pb and verified with ¹³⁷Cs. Maximum ages of 77 and 86 years were estimated. Sediment provenance was described by sedimentological and geochemical proxies. The chemical alteration index (CIA) and weathering index (CIW) revealed moderate to high intensity of weathering in the source area that is controlled tropical climatic conditions, runoff, and precipitation in the basin that feeds sediments to this coastal lagoon. The Al₂O₃/TiO₂ ratios indicated that the sediments were derived from intermediate igneous rocks. The enrichment factor values revealed the lithogenic and anthropic contribution of metals and metalloids. Cd is classified under the category extremely severe enrichment; agricultural activities, fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides containing Cd are expected to supply this metal to the ecosystem. Factor Analysis and Principal Components provided two main factors, terrigenous and biological origins; ANOVA indicated that there are significant differences between the cores for the parameters analyzed and revealed that there are differences in depositional environments between the recovery zones of the cores. The ALS presented natural variations associated with the climatic conditions, terrigenous input, and its relationship with the hydrological variations of the main rivers. The contribution of this work was to identify the magnitude of the natural component versus the human contribution, mainly of risk metals such as Cd, to support better management of the hydrological basin that affects the ALS.

A unified conceptual model of coastal response to accelerating sea level rise, Florida, U.S.A

Aggregation of paleo-environmental data derived from geological investigations conducted on the shoreface and inner shelf of Florida's six coastal geomorphic sectors revealed a common and synchronous response to a decelerating rate of Holocene sea level rise: (1) early Holocene overstep and submergence (~10-5 mm yr^-1), (2) mid-Holocene erosional shoreface retreat (~2 mm yr^-1), and (3) late Holocene stabilization (<1 mm yr^-1). Linear best-fit analysis of sea level data collected at 14 NOAA tide gauge stations distributed along the entire Florida coast indicates the rate of sea level rise has accelerated from a historical average of 3.1 mm yr^-1 (<1972-2022; range 2.2 to 4.2) to 5.9 mm yr^-1 (1993-2022; range 4.8 to 6.9) and 8.2 mm yr^-1 during the 21st century (2003-2022; range 7.6 to 10.0). The 21st century rates vary between stations, however all fall within the range of values documented during the early Holocene; a time when Florida's coastline was rapidly transgressed. Recent studies have demonstrated that the destabilizing effects of this acceleration on Florida's coastal geomorphology and ecology are already evident. Rates of rise are expected to continue increasing and this will accelerate the pace and scale of landward translation and submergence of Florida's coastal environment.

Fidelity of the 210Pb dating method, a subaquatic sediment perspective

In recent decades, ²¹⁰Pb has been extensively used as a powerful dating and sedimentation rate-determining tool for sediments deposited over the past ~150 years. However, the conditional assumptions underlying this application have not been explicitly validated, and are always challenged by multiple factors. Here, we synthesize all the possible factors that may limit the accuracy of ²¹⁰Pb as a geochronometer and bring together related evidence from observations, measurements, and sediment records. It was demonstrated that by affecting the initial ²¹⁰Pb activity and challenging closed deposition system, particle affinity preference, physical/biological mixing, sedimentation events, and ²¹⁰Pb post-depositional mobility are the four main contributors to its compromising accuracy. By systematically deepening the knowledge of the ²¹⁰Pb dating method, this study highlights the necessity of testing the assumption before using it, provides a framework for interpreting non-steady-state accumulation profiles from various sediments, and identifies future research opportunities for chronology improvement and ²¹⁰Pb application development.

The Montecristo mining district, northern Chile: the relationship between vein-like magnetite-(apatite) and iron oxide-copper-gold deposits

The Montecristo district, northern Chile, is one of the few places worldwide where there is a direct relationship between magnetite-(apatite) (MtAp) mineralization and iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) mineralization. The MtAp mineralization includes Ti-poor magnetite, fluorapatite, and actinolite and is crosscut and partially replaced by a younger IOCG mineralization that includes a second generation of actinolite and magnetite with quartz, chalcopyrite, pyrite, and molybdenite. The MtAp stage at Montecristo is interpreted as the crystallized iron-rich melts that used the pre-existing structures of the Atacama Fault System as conduits. These rocks later acted as a trap for hydrothermal IOCG mineralization. Geochronology data at Montecristo indicate that the host diorite (U-Pb zircon 153.3 ± 1.8 Ma, 2-sigma), MtAp mineralization (40Ar-39Ar in actinolite, 154 ± 2 Ma and 153 ± 4 Ma, 2-sigma), and the IOCG event (Re-Os on molybdenite, 151.8 ± 0.6 Ma, 2-sigma) are coeval within error and took place in a time span of less than 3.4 Ma. The εHfi and εNdi values of the host diorite are + 8.0 to + 9.8 and + 4.3 to + 5.4, respectively. The whole-rock 87Sr/86Sri values of the IOCG mineralization (0.70425 to 0.70442) are in the lower end of those of the MtAp mineralization (0.70426-0.70629). In contrast, εNdi values for the IOCG mineralization (+ 5.4 and + 5.7) fall between those of the MtAp rocks (+ 6.6 to + 7.2) and the host diorite, which suggests that the IOCG event was related to fluids having a more crustal Nd (εNdi <  + 5.7) composition than the MtAp mineralization. This likely reflects the mixing of Nd from the MtAp protolith and a deep magmatic-hydrothermal source, very likely an unexposed intrusion equivalent to the host diorite. Sulfur isotope compositions (δ34S, + 0.3 to + 3.4‰) are consistent with a magmatic source.

Challenging the antiquity of the Cradle of Humankind, South Africa: Geochronological evidence restricts the age of Eurotomys bolti and Parapapio to less than 2.3 Ma at Waypoint 160, Bolt's Farm

Waypoint 160 is a paleocave at Bolt's Farm in the 'Cradle of Humankind,' South Africa. It is known for the novel murid taxa Eurotomys bolti, argued to be morphologically intermediate between Eurotomys pelomyoides from Langebaanweg (∼5.1 Ma) and the earliest Otomyinae from Makapansgat Limeworks (∼3.0-2.6 Ma). Based on the presence of this specimen, an age of ∼4.5 Ma was inferred for Waypoint 160, making it far older than other Cradle sites. This biochronological age was used to argue that Parapapio and Cercopithecoides fossils from Waypoint 160 were the oldest in the region. Here, we provide a detailed sedimentological context for the in-situ deposits at Waypoint 160. We have identified interior cave deposits, in contrast to other sites at Bolt's Farm. Petrography confirms that one unit (facies D) contains in-situ microfaunal fossils, indicating the likely provenience of the E. bolti specimen. Palaeomagnetic analysis shows four periods of magnetic polarity in the sequence. Using U-Pb ages as chronological pins, we argue that the upper part of the sequence records a polarity change at the end of the Olduvai subChron (1.78 Ma). The lower part of the sequence records a polarity shift from normal to reversed that likely relates to the Feni subChron (2.16-2.12 Ma), based on a basal flowstone U-Pb age of 2.269 ± 0.075 Ma. Together this points to a depositional window of ∼500 ka, with the Parapapio and E. bolti tentatively attributed to the micromammal fossil-bearing layers dating to ∼2.27-2.07 Ma. This has significant implications for other biochronological dates in South Africa, as E. bolti is now less than ∼2.27 Ma, younger than the oldest Otomyinae at Makapansgat Limeworks and thus not ancestral to them. This chronology for Waypoint 160 challenges the presence of older, early to mid-Pliocene deposits >3.20 Ma in the Gauteng portion of the Cradle.

Bottom sediment radioactivity of the six Caucasus lakes located in different altitude zones

Natural and artificial radioactivity of bottom sediment in the six lakes of the Western and Central Caucasus have been evaluated. It allowed to define the variation of sedimentation rate during the last 100-150 years using technogenic (¹³⁷Cs) and natural (²¹⁰Pb, ²²⁶Ra) radionuclides as a chronomarkers. The studied lakes are located in the contrasting geographic conditions, different orographic positions, and have different origin. The average annual precipitation in the area of each of the lakes has been detected to stay relatively constant during the ¹³⁷Cs fallout period, while the air temperature has markedly increased during the last decades. The detected sedimentation rates are the indirect indicator of climate change in the mountains. They are slightly decreasing owing to the increased protection of soil by vegetation cover in the lower altitude zone; in the upper zones, they are growing due to accelerated glacier retreat. The radioecological situation is estimated as normal. High levels of ¹³⁷Cs (33 kBq m^-2) and ²⁴¹Am (0.1 kBq m^-2) in bottom sediments are attributed to the region-specific geographical characteristics.

240Pu/239Pu signatures allow refining the chronology of radionuclide fallout in South America

Atmospheric nuclear tests (1945-1980) have led to radioactive fallout across the globe. French tests in Polynesia (1966-1974) may influence the signature of fallout in South America in addition to those conducted by USA and former USSR until 1963 in the Northern hemisphere. Here, we compiled the ²⁴⁰Pu/²³⁹Pu atom ratios reported for soils of South America and conducted additional measurements to examine their latitudinal distributions across this continent. Significantly lower ratio values were found in the 20-45° latitudinal band (0.04 to 0.13) compared to the rest of the continent (up to 0.20) and attributed to the contribution of the French atmospheric tests to the ultra-trace plutonium levels found in these soils. Based on sediment cores collected in lakes of Chile and Uruguay, we show the added value of measuring ²⁴⁰Pu/²³⁹Pu atom ratios to refine the age models of environmental archives in this region of the world.

Heavy metal background levels and pollution temporal trend assessment within the marine sediments facing a brownfield area (Gulf of Pozzuoli, Southern Italy)

In this study, site-specific natural background levels (NBLs) were determined for 18 elements (Al, As, Be, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Fe, Hg, K, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Tl, U, V, and Zn) in two sediment cores collected offshore the Bagnoli-Coroglio brownfield site (Gulf of Pozzuoli, southern Italy) to accurately assess the degree of contamination and the historical trends in Heavy Metals (HMs) enrichment. This objective was pursued taking in account the high temporal and spatial variability of the geochemical properties of the area due to the local geothermal activity. Moreover, the temporal variation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) was investigated.²²⁶Ra was used as an extraordinary marker to confirm ²¹⁰Pb dating. It especially allowed defining the geochronological framework of the sediment core closer the brownfield up to around 1500, providing compelling support to correlate the investigated elements' occurrences with natural geogenic dynamic. Sediment samples were accurately dated and analyzed for chemical and particle size composition. The contamination factor (Cf) and the pollution load index (PLI) showed very high enrichment of Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn. The contamination profiles of HMs and PAHs follow the same pattern in both sediment cores, increasing from deep to upper layers. The highest contamination levels for HMs and PAHs were observed between 10 and 30 cm, corresponding to the periods of most intense industrial activity. Decreasing trends of pollutants were observed in the surface layers (0-10 cm), probably affected by a natural attenuation process due to the cessation of industrial activities.

An integrated assessment to reconstruct the history of changes influenced by multiple anthropogenic activities (City of Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil)

In this study, the multi-marker approach was used for the first time with a highly urbanized lake located in the city of Fortaleza, Brazil, to provide a comprehensive view of temporal trends in sources of pollutants and evaluate the relation between the influence of anthropogenic activities and socioeconomic development. Total concentrations of the markers analyzed ranged from 21.0 to 103.8 ng g^-1, 450.2 to 2390.2 ng g^-1, and 233.8 to 9827.3 ng g^-1 for ∑_PAHs, ∑_n-alk, and ∑_sterols, respectively. Concentrations and patterns of PAH, AH, and sterol ratio distribution changed over time and may be associated with different episodes in the history of the city of Fortaleza. The marker ratio distribution in the sediment core revealed an overlap of natural and anthropogenic sources, with degraded oil, biogenic inputs, pyrogenic processes, and fecal contamination from humans and animals in the past changing to petroleum fossil inputs and high contamination from sewage in the present day. The distribution of markers and the chronological history of Fortaleza revealed two distinct periods related to human activities during the development of the city. In the first period (prior to the 1950s), the main human activities were animal breeding and the use of biomass for domestic activities, public and cargo transportation, and commercial activities, especially food production. In the second period (after the 1950s), expansion of the city occurred due to the so-called Brazilian economic miracle and the main human activities were industrialization and urbanization processes, involving deforestation, paving, sewage discharge, and petroleum combustion.

A Review of the "Black Beauty" Martian Regolith Breccia and Its Martian Habitability Record

The regolith breccia Northwest Africa (NWA) 7034 and paired samples are unique meteorite representatives of the martian crust. They are water rich, lithologically varied, and preserve the oldest martian zircon grains yet discovered that formed ca. 4500-4300 Ma. The meteorite thus provides us with an invaluable record of the crustal and environmental conditions on early Mars. Resetting of some radioisotopic chronometers occurred in response to a major thermal disturbance event ca. 1500-1400 Ma, likely caused by an impactor that brecciated and redeposited NWA 7034 near the surface in an ejecta blanket. Lithologies comprising NWA 7034 were then aqueously altered by a long-lasting impact-induced hydrothermal system, before being excavated and ejected by a subsequent impact at ca. 5-15 Ma. This review compiles chronological and petrological information into an overarching geochronological summary for NWA 7034 and paired samples. We then provide a synopsis for the volatile (H₂O, C) inventory and hydrothermal alteration history of NWA 7034. From this geochronological history and volatile inventory, we interpret and assess two potential periods of martian habitability: (1) an early window of pre-Noachian planetary habitability, and (2) impact-derived hydrothermal systems that allowed intermittent habitable crater environments well into the Amazonian.

Sedimentation rates by the 210Pb chronological method in Itanhaém river watershed, southeast Brazil

The historical variation of sedimentation rate was investigated in five cores collected from the Itanhaém watershed main rivers, the second largest coastal watershed of the São Paulo state, Brazil, using the lead-210 radioisotope as a geochronometer. The main characteristics of the rivers' waters and sediments were determined in order to support the geochronological analysis results and associate sediments with possible source areas. In this context, the fluvial waters' general classification indicated the facies sulfated or chlorinated sodium in the winter and summer seasons, except for the Branco river waters in summer, which were classified as calcium or magnesium bicarbonate. A longitudinal salinity gradient was found in the downstream river courses, under greater marine influence, with the ions Cl^-, Na⁺, SO₄²⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, and K⁺ being most common in the waters. Silica is the predominant constituent in the sediment cores and is inversely related to the organic matter (OM) presence. Inverse correlations were also found between silica and other constituents. The watershed sedimentation rates were determined in the range of 0.31 up to 3.97 g/cm²/year and 0.30 up to 3.40 cm/year, highlighting the core extracted from Branco river, which showed the highest sedimentation rate. The profiles corresponding to Preto and Aguapeú rivers presented discontinuities in the sedimentation rates. The discontinuities were dated and would probably be related to the anthropic activities, which intensified in the municipality of Itanhaém around the middle of the twentieth century.

Updating a Paleogene magnetobiochronological time scale through graphical integration

All studies focused on the evaluation of paleoecological variability over geological time must be linked to a specific age or time interval, which can be defined using different time scales (biostratigraphic, chronostratigraphic, geochronological or orbital). Therefore, integrated time scales are essential to allow comparisons of data from different locations and/or to assess evolutionary and other events through time. Here we use a new method to update a Paleogene magnetobiochronological time scale, with the following contributions:•

The update of the Paleogene magnetobiochronological scale was made by graphical correlation with new age models and adding calcareous nannoplankton and planktonic foraminiferal biozones from different authors.

An excel file structure was proposed to plot any kind of data in MATLAB software, as long as they are associated with some of the scales shown in our updated version of Paleogene magnetobiochronology.

The excel file structure facilitates the analysis of long-term trends of taxonomic groups throughout the Paleogene, and of their evolution in a period characterized by intense climate variability.

Western Carpathian mid-Permian Magmatism: Petrographic, geochemical, and geochronological data

This study presents geochemical and geochronological data from rock samples collected from the Western Carpathian mountains, eastern Slovakia. Granite assemblages that intrude the Gemeric and Veporic Superunits were imaged using a petrographic microscope to determine rock textures and their mineral assemblages. Zircon grains from seven individual portions of the Gemeric granites (Hnilec, Betliar, Elisabeth Mine, Poproč plutons) and one from the Veporic unit (Klenovec pluton) were dated using Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS). Eight individual portions of the Gemeric unit's Betliar pluton and seven from the Klenovec granite were analyzed for major and trace elements using Fusion Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) and Fusion ICP-mass spectrometry. We also report detrital zircon ages from a radiolarite from the Meliata Unit that overlies blueschist and harzburgite-lizardite serpentinite assemblages near the city of Dobšiná, Slovakia. We applied X-ray Diffraction to a sample from the serpentine rocks, which reveal the presence of lizardite. The data are available for re-use to compare to future analyses of these Permian-age granites found in the Carpathian Mountains or similar Permiam assemblages elsewhere more broadly. Sedimentary record of nutrients and sources of organic matter in the Shuanglong reservoir, Dianchi watershed, China

In the last few decades, the eutrophication of lakes has been a serious issue in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River watershed. To explore the relationship between lake systems and anthropogenic activities, sediments were collected from the Shuanglong reservoir in the Dianchi watershed in Southwest China. Total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total organic carbon (TOC), and the carbon isotopic ratio (δ¹³C) were analyzed in sediment cores to reconstruct the effects of natural succession and human activities on the past lacustrine environmental conditions. A reliable chronology of the sediment core was established by using the ²¹⁰Pb dating technique, which indicated that the age span of the 70-cm sediment core is from the years 1871 to 2011. Above - 31 cm depth in the core, TN, TP, TOC, C/N, and δ¹³C increased significantly, indicating that eutrophication has occurred since the 1980s. By combining the indicators of δ¹³C and C/N, it was shown that terrestrial and lacustrine components were the main sources of organic matter (OM) in the reservoir, which was mostly controlled by terrestrial C₃ plants and algae. Since the 1980s, increased sewage discharge, fish aquaculture, fertilizer application, population, and economic strength have sped up the eutrophication process, and the eutrophication was further intensified in 2001.

Anthropogenic mercury contamination in sediments of Krka River estuary (Croatia)

Coastal and estuarine sediments play an important role in the biogeochemical cycle of mercury (Hg) in the aquatic environment. When contaminated, sediments can act as a potential source of Hg and may pose a long-term risk to aquatic biota. The aim of this research was to assess spatial and historical distribution of Hg in the sediments of the Krka River estuary, an environment that so far has been regarded as relatively unpolluted. To achieve this goal, 40 surface sediment samples and 7 sediment cores were collected along the entire estuary. Hg concentrations in the surface and deep sediments of the Krka River estuary were found in a broad range 0.042-57.8 mg kg^-1, demonstrating significant spatial and temporal differences in Hg input to the estuarine sediments. Two distinct areas were distinguished; upper estuary where the Hg content was comparable to other unpolluted Adriatic sediments, and the lower estuary where sediment profiles reflected the history of anthropogenic Hg input associated with the city of Šibenik. The vertical Hg profile from the most affected area of the estuary, combined with ²¹⁰Pb and ¹³⁷Cs dating, demonstrated that a significant increase of Hg input started in late 1940s/early 1950s, mainly related to shipyard activities. This study provided more insight on the Hg concentration in the Krka River estuary, demonstrating that the high values obtained, although localized, were comparable to the ones found in some of the most contaminated sites in the Mediterranean.

Accumulation rates and chronologies from depth profiles of 210Pbex and 137Cs in sediments of northern Beibu Gulf, South China sea

Beibu Gulf is a highly dynamic and complex coastal environment that is currently experiencing one of the largest rates of development and urbanization in west China. Little is known about the effects of this increased human activity on coastal sedimentation processes and on the rates of sediment accumulation and the variation of organic materials to the coast. In this study, four sediment cores were collected and applied the ²¹⁰Pb dating method to reconstruct sedimentation rates and historical changes of materials to the northern Beibu Gulf over the past century. Depth profiles of excess ²¹⁰Pb (²¹⁰Pb_ex) showed highest activity values at the surface (28.4-104.0 Bq kg^-1) followed by a linear or exponential decay with depth for all but one study site. ¹³⁷Cs activity ranged between 0.236 and 2.034 Bq kg^-1, and a distinct peak activity - representing the 1963 fallout maximum - was observed at all but one site. Sediment chronologies were determined using the Constant Rate of Supply (CRS) model. Calculated accumulation rates in the studied sites were the lowest in the late 1920s and early 1930s (mass accumulation rate (MAR): 0.06 ± 0.01 g cm^-2 y^-1; sediment accumulation rate (SAR): 0.08 ± 0.01 cm y^-1) and increased gradually until reaching maximum values in the 2010s (MAR: 0.22 ± 0.09 g cm^-2 y^-1; SAR: 0.46 ± 0.32 cm y^-1). Current accumulation rates are up to 800% higher than rates observed in the 1920s, with most of the increase happening after 1970, coinciding with the increasing rate of urbanization and development in the region. The highest increase in SAR over the last century (+877%) was observed in Sanniang Bay, with the lowest rate of increase (+283%) observed in Lianzhou Bay. TOC content in these sediments has also increased over the last 100 years. Current values (0.98-1.28%) are about 170% higher than historical concentrations (before 1970). The positive correlations between TOC and population density and GDP growth in major cities surrounding the gulf, provide further indication that human activities have significantly altered the sedimentary environment in recent decades along the northern Beibu Gulf coast.

Earth's Impact Events Through Geologic Time: A List of Recommended Ages for Terrestrial Impact Structures and Deposits

This article presents a current (as of September 2019) list of recommended ages for proven terrestrial impact structures (n = 200) and deposits (n = 46) sourced from the primary literature. High-precision impact ages can be used to (1) reconstruct and quantify the impact flux in the inner Solar System and, in particular, the Earth-Moon system, thereby placing constraints on the delivery of extraterrestrial mass accreted on Earth through geologic time; (2) utilize impact ejecta as event markers in the stratigraphic record and to refine bio- and magneto-stratigraphy; (3) test models and hypotheses of synchronous double or multiple impact events in the terrestrial record; (4) assess the potential link between large impacts, mass extinctions, and diversification events in the biosphere; and (5) constrain the duration of melt sheet crystallization in large impact basins and the lifetime of hydrothermal systems in cooling impact craters, which may have served as habitats for microbial life on the early Earth and, possibly, Mars.

In Situ Geochronology on Mars and the Development of Future Instrumentation

We review the in situ geochronology experiments conducted by the Mars Science Laboratory mission's Curiosity rover to understand when the Gale Crater rocks formed, underwent alteration, and became exposed to cosmogenic radiation. These experiments determined that the detrital minerals in the sedimentary rocks of Gale are ∼4 Ga, consistent with their origin in the basalts surrounding the crater. The sedimentary rocks underwent fluid-moderated alteration 2 Gyr later, which may mark the closure of aqueous activity at Gale Crater. Over the past several million years, wind-driven processes have dominated, denuding the surfaces by scarp retreat. The Curiosity measurements validate radiometric dating techniques on Mars and guide the way for future instrumentation to make more precise measurements that will further our understanding of the geological and astrobiological history of the planet.

Monte Carlo sampling for error propagation in linear regression and applications in isochron geochronology

Geochronology is essential for understanding Earth's history. The availability of precise and accurate isotopic data is increasing; hence it is crucial to develop transparent and accessible data reduction techniques and tools to transform raw mass spectrometry data into robust chronological data. Here we present a Monte Carlo sampling approach to fully propagate uncertainties from linear regressions for isochron dating. Our new approach makes no prior assumption about the causes of variability in the derived chronological results and propagates uncertainties from both experimental measurements (analytical uncertainties) and underlying assumptions (model uncertainties) into the final age determination. Using synthetic examples, we find that although the estimates of the slope and y-intercept (hence age and initial isotopic ratios) are comparable between the Monte Carlo method and the benchmark "Isoplot" algorithm, uncertainties from the later could be underestimated by up to 60%, which are likely due to an incomplete propagation of model uncertainties. An additional advantage of the new method is its ability to integrate with geological information to yield refined chronological constraints. The new method presented here is specifically designed to fully propagate errors in geochronological applications involves linear regressions such as Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd, Re-Os, Pt-Os, Lu-Hf, U-Pb (with discordant points), Pb-Pb and Ar-Ar.

Historical accumulation of potentially toxic trace elements resulting from mining activities in estuarine salt marshes sediments of the Asturias coastline (northern Spain)

The extensive extraction activity of mercury ores in Asturias (northwest Spain), also rich in As and Sb, has impacted the Nalón river estuary. The objective of this research was to assess the historical evolution of As-Hg-Sb accumulation in the salt marsh sediments of this area. For this purpose, sediment cores were collected from two different salt marshes (eastern and western river banks) in the estuarine environment to evaluate the degree of anthropogenic enrichment and the geochronology of As-Hg-Sb accumulation. Core subsampling was performed by cutting 2-cm-thick slices of sediments. The subsamples were then analysed for several physical and chemical parameters. Sedimentation rate was assessed by measuring short-lived radionuclides (excess ²¹⁰Pb and ¹³⁷Cs). Pre-mining levels of As-Hg-Sb were observed at core depths below 50 cm. In the less extended salt marsh (eastern river bank), maximum As-Hg-Sb concentrations of 87.48, 3.66, and 5.75 μg·g^-1, respectively, were found at the core top as a consequence of long-term mining activity in the area. The vertical distribution of As-Hg-Sb was influenced by the single-point contamination sources, whereas grain-size variability and diagenetic remobilisation did not seem affected. Geochronological measurements showed that the depositional fluxes of As-Hg-Sb were influenced by anthropogenic input after 1900, when mining activity in the area was most intense. Hg mining ceased in 1969; however, the corresponding core profiles did not show a drastic decreasing trend in element fluxes, implying that the river drainage basin retains some "memory" of contamination which affects riverine sediments. A preliminary gross estimation of total As-Hg-Sb "trapped" in the Nalón river salt marsh sediments amounted to approximately 18.7, 1.0, and 0.7 t, respectively. These morphological structures suffer erosive processes, thus representing a potential source of these elements associated with sediments; consequently, management conservation and monitoring of salt marshes should be taken into consideration from this environmental point of view.

Sediment accumulation and mixing in the Penobscot River and estuary, Maine

Mercury (Hg) was discharged in the late 1960s into the Penobscot River by the Holtra-Chem chlor-alkali production facility, which was in operation from 1967 to 2000. To assess the transport and distribution of total Hg, and recovery of the river and estuary system from Hg pollution, physical and radiochemical data were assembled from sediment cores collected from 58 of 72 coring stations sampled in 2009. These stations were located throughout the lower Penobscot River, and included four principal study regions, the Penobscot River (PBR), Mendall Marsh (MM), the Orland River (OR), and the Penobscot estuary (ES). To provide the geochronology required to evaluate sedimentary total Hg profiles, 58 of 72 sediment cores were dated using the atmospheric radionuclide tracers ¹³⁷Cs, ²¹⁰Pb, and ^239,240Pu. Sediment cores were assessed for depths of mixing, and for the determination of sediment accumulation rates using both geochemical (total Hg) and radiochemical data. At most stations, evidence for significant vertical mixing, derived from profiles of ⁷Be (where possible) and porosity, was restricted to the upper ~1-3cm. Thus, historic profiles of both total Hg and radionuclides were only minimally distorted, allowing a reconstruction of their depositional history. The pulse input tracers ¹³⁷Cs and ^239,240Pu used to assess sediment accumulation rates agreed well, while the steady state tracer ²¹⁰Pb exhibited weaker agreement, likely due to irregular lateral sediment inputs.

Uptake and distribution of organo-iodine in deep-sea corals

Understanding iodine concentration, transport, and bioavailability is essential in evaluating iodine's impact to the environment and its effectiveness as an environmental biogeotracer. While iodine and its radionuclides have proven to be important tracers in geologic and biologic studies, little is known about transport of this element to the deep sea and subsequent uptake in deep-sea coral habitats. Results presented here on deep-sea black coral iodine speciation and iodine isotope variability provides key information on iodine behavior in natural and anthropogenic environments, and its geochemical pathway in the Gulf of Mexico. Organo-iodine is the dominant iodine species in the black corals, demonstrating that binding of iodine to organic matter plays an important role in the transport and transfer of iodine to the deep-sea corals. The identification of growth bands captured in high-resolution scanning electron images (SEM) with synchronous peaks in iodine variability suggest that riverine delivery of terrestrial-derived organo-iodine is the most plausible explanation to account for annual periodicity in the deep-sea coral geochemistry. Whereas previous studies have suggested the presence of annual growth rings in deep-sea corals, this present study provides a mechanism to explain the formation of annual growth bands. Furthermore, deep-sea coral ages based on iodine peak counts agree well with those ages derived from radiocarbon (¹⁴C) measurements. These results hold promise for developing chronologies independent of ¹⁴C dating, which is an essential component in constraining reservoir ages and using radiocarbon as a tracer of ocean circulation. Furthermore, the presence of enriched ¹²⁹I/¹²⁷I ratios during the most recent period of skeleton growth is linked to nuclear weapons testing during the 1960s. The sensitivity of the coral skeleton to record changes in surface water ¹²⁹I composition provides further evidence that iodine composition and isotope variability captured in proteinaceous deep-sea corals is a promising geochronometer as well as an emerging tracer for continental material flux.

Rate of sediment accumulation and historic metal contamination in a tidewater glacier fjord, Svalbard

The sedimentation rates in Arctic fjords are influenced by the changes in the glacial inputs. The recent studies have indicated the retreat of glaciers due to climate change and subsequent increase in melt water outflow with high content of debris. The debris may contain natural and anthropogenically originated contaminants. The present study analysed the sedimentation rate in inner Kongsfjorden, Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard using ²¹⁰Pb/²¹⁰Po dating technique. The sedimentation rate ranged between 0.22 and 0.37 cm/year during the last 112 years. The average sedimentation rate obtained was 0.28 cm/y. The rate has been increased during the last 20 years and it might be due to the increased influx of glacial melt water containing debris. Metals and other elements showed an increasing trend towards the surface and observed high deposition rate since 1970s, indicating influence of industrial emissions and it can be a potential threat to Arctic biota.

Source and fractionation controls on subduction-related plutons and dike swarms in southern Patagonia (Torres del Paine area) and the low Nb/Ta of upper crustal igneous rocks

The subduction system in southern Patagonia provides direct evidence for the variability of the position of an active continental arc with respect to the subducting plate through time, but the consequences on the arc magmatic record are less well studied. Here we present a geochemical and geochronological study on small plutons and dykes from the upper crust of the southern Patagonian Andes at ~ 51°S, which formed as a result of the subduction of the Nazca and Antarctic plates beneath the South American continent. In situ U-Pb geochronology on zircons and bulk rock geochemical data of plutonic and dyke rocks are used to constrain the magmatic evolution of the retro-arc over the last 30 Ma. We demonstrate that these combined U-Pb and geochemical data for magmatic rocks track the temporal and spatial migration of the active arc, and associated retro-arc magmatism. Our dataset indicates that the rear-arc area is characterized by small volumes of alkaline basaltic magmas at 29-30 Ma that are characterized by low La/Nb and Th/Nb ratios with negligible arc signatures. Subsequent progressive eastward migration of the active arc culminated with the emplacement of calc-alkaline plutons and dikes ~ 17-16 Ma with elevated La/Nb and Th/Nb ratios and typical subduction signatures constraining the easternmost position of the southern Patagonian batholith at that time. Geochemical data on the post-16 Ma igneous rocks including the Torres del Paine laccolith indicate an evolution to transitional K-rich calc-alkaline magmatism at 12.5 ± 0.2 Ma. We show that trace element ratios such as Nb/Ta and Dy/Yb systematically decrease with increasing SiO₂, for both the 17-16 Ma calc-alkaline and the 12-13 Ma K-rich transitional magmatism. In contrast, Th/Nb and La/Nb monitor the changes in the source composition of these magmas. We suggest that the transition from the common calc-alkaline to K-rich transitional magmatism involves a change in the source component, while the trace element ratios, such as Nb/Ta and Dy/Yb, of derivative higher silica content liquids are controlled by similar fractionating mineral assemblages. Analysis of a global compilation of Nb/Ta ratios of arc magmatic rocks and simple geochemical models indicate that amphibole and variable amounts of biotite exert a major control on the low Dy/Yb and Nb/Ta of derivative granitic liquids. Lastly, we suggest that the low Nb/Ta ratio of silica-rich magmas is a natural consequence of biotite fractionation and that alternative models such as amphibolite melting in subduction zones and diffusive fractionation are not required to explain the Nb/Ta ratio of the upper continental crust.

Comprehensive study of the mountainous lake sediments in relation to natural and anthropogenic processes and time (Mały Staw Lake, Poland)

The Sudety Mts. form a chain of mountains in the South of Poland and during the last 200 years were subjected to strong industrial and agricultural pressure. The records of these human-induced changes are stored in natural archives like lake sediments. For the comprehensive study, three sediment cores taken from Mały Staw Lake (Sudety Mts.) were analyzed for the concentration of K, Na, Mn, Fe, Cu, Mg, Zn, Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb and radioactivity of ¹³⁷Cs and ²¹⁰Pb. As a result of the studies, the bathymetry map was developed and the sources of solid material supplied to the lake were identified. The geochronology studies of the cores were performed using ²¹⁰Pb method, to evaluate model of time changes in the sediment. Radioactivity of ²¹⁰Pb_uns (determined indirectly by ²¹⁰Po) ranged from 1051 ± 64 to 12 ± 8 Bq kg^-1. The ¹³⁷Cs radioactivity was determined directly by gamma spectrometry and varied from 525 ± 37 Bq kg^-1 for top layers to 9.80 ± 5.40 Bq kg^-1 for the bottom of the core. Two characteristic peaks of ¹³⁷Cs radioactivity related to the global fallouts after nuclear weapons testing and the Chernobyl accident were observed and used to confirm ²¹⁰Pb dating method. Chemometrics analysis of the chosen metal's concentrations combined with sample dating showed distinct imprint of human activity on the studied area.

Beam-induced back-streaming electron suppression analysis for an accelerator type neutron generator designed for 40Ar/39Ar geochronology

A facility based on a next-generation, high-flux D-D neutron generator has been commissioned and it is now operational at the University of California, Berkeley. The current generator designed for ⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar dating of geological materials produces nearly monoenergetic 2.45MeV neutrons at outputs of 10⁸n/s. The narrow energy range is advantageous relative to the ²³⁵U fission spectrum neutrons due to (i) reduced ³⁹Ar recoil energy, (ii) minimized production of interfering argon isotopes from K, Ca, and Cl, and (iii) reduced total activity for radiological safety and waste generation. Calculations provided show that future conditioning at higher currents and voltages will allow for a neutron output of over 10¹⁰n/s, which is a necessary requirement for production of measurable quantities of ³⁹Ar through the reaction ³⁹K(n,p)³⁹Ar. A significant problem encountered with increasing deuteron current was beam-induced electron backstreaming. Two methods of suppressing secondary electrons resulting from the deuterium beam striking the target were tested: the application of static electric and magnetic fields. Computational simulations of both techniques were done using a finite element analysis in COMSOL Multiphysics^®. Experimental tests verified these simulations. The most reliable suppression was achieved via the implementation of an electrostatic shroud with a voltage offset of -800V relative to the target.

Fundamental uncertainty equations for nuclear dating applied to the 140Ba-140La and 227Th-223Ra chronometers

Basic equations for age dating through activity ratio measurements are presented and applied to nuclear chronometers based on parent-daughter decay. Uncertainty propagation formulae are derived which relate the relative uncertainty on the half-lives and measured activity ratios with the relative uncertainty on the calculated time of a nuclear event. Particular attention is paid to the case of relatively short-lived radionuclides for which the change in decay rate during the measurement is non-negligible. Mathematical solutions are presented to correct the perceived activity ratio and adapt the uncertainty propagation formulae to complete the uncertainty budget. The formulae have been applied to ¹⁴⁰Ba-¹⁴⁰La chronometry, which is particularly useful for dating a nuclear explosion through measurement of the produced activity ratio of ¹⁴⁰La and ¹⁴⁰Ba in a finite time interval. They were also applied to the ²²⁷Th-²²³Ra parent-daughter pair produced for therapeutic use. The impact of inaccuracies in the nuclear decay data on the performance of these nuclear chronometers is shown and discussed.

From nappe stacking to exhumation: Cretaceous tectonics in the Apuseni Mountains (Romania)

New Ar-Ar muscovite and Rb-Sr biotite age data in combination with structural analyses from the Apuseni Mountains provide new constraints on the timing and kinematics of deformation during the Cretaceous. Time-temperature paths from the structurally highest basement nappe of the Apuseni Mountains in combination with sedimentary data indicate exhumation and a position close to the surface after the Late Jurassic emplacement of the South Apuseni Ophiolites. Early Cretaceous Ar-Ar muscovite ages from structurally lower parts in the Biharia Nappe System (Dacia Mega-Unit) show cooling from medium-grade conditions. NE-SW-trending stretching lineation and associated kinematic indicators of this deformation phase (D1) are overprinted by top-NW-directed thrusting during D2. An Albian to Turonian age (110-90 Ma) is proposed for the main deformation (D2) that formed the present-day geometry of the nappe stack and led to a pervasive retrograde greenschist-facies overprint. Thermochronological and structural data from the Bihor Unit (Tisza Mega-Unit) allowed to establish E-directed differential exhumation during Early-Late Cretaceous times (D3.1). Brittle detachment faulting (D3.2) and the deposition of syn-extensional sediments indicate general uplift and partial surface exposure during the Late Cretaceous. Brittle conditions persist during the latest Cretaceous compressional overprint (D4).

Direct dating of Pleistocene stegodon from Timor Island, East Nusa Tenggara

Stegodons are a commonly recovered extinct proboscidean (elephants and allies) from the Pleistocene record of Southeast Asian oceanic islands. Estimates on when stegodons arrived on individual islands and the timings of their extinctions are poorly constrained due to few reported direct geochronological analyses of their remains. Here we report on uranium-series dating of a stegodon tusk recovered from the Ainaro Gravels of Timor. The six dates obtained indicate the local presence of stegodons in Timor at or before 130 ka, significantly pre-dating the earliest evidence of humans on the island. On the basis of current data, we find no evidence for significant environmental changes or the presence of modern humans in the region during that time. Thus, we do not consider either of these factors to have contributed significantly to their extinction. In the absence of these, we propose that their extinction was possibly the result of long-term demographic and genetic declines associated with an isolated island population.

Examining (239+240)Pu, (210)Pb and historical events to determine carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus burial in mangrove sediments of Moreton Bay, Australia

Two sediment cores were collected in a mangrove forest to construct geochronologies for the previous century using natural and anthropogenic radionuclide tracers. Both sediment cores were dated using (239+240)Pu global fallout signatures as well as (210)Pb, applying both the Constant Initial Concentration (CIC) and the Constant Rate of Supply (CRS) models. The (239+240)Pu and CIC model are interpreted as having comparable sediment accretion rates (SAR) below an apparent mixed region in the upper ∼5 to 10 cm. In contrast, the CRS dating method shows high sediment accretion rates in the uppermost intervals, which is substantially reduced over the lower intervals of the 100-year record. A local anthropogenic nutrient signal is reflected in the high total phosphorus (TP) concentration in younger sediments. The carbon/nitrogen molar ratios and δ(15)N values further support a local anthropogenic nutrient enrichment signal. The origin of these signals is likely the treated sewage discharge to Moreton Bay which began in the early 1970s. While the (239+240)Pu and CIC models can only produce rates averaged over the intervals of interest within the profile, the (210)Pb CRS model identifies elevated rates of sediment accretion, organic carbon (OC), nitrogen (N), and TP burial from 2000 to 2013. From 1920 to 2000, the three dating methods provide similar OC, N and TP burial rates, ∼150, 10 and 2 g m(-2) year(-1), respectively, which are comparable to global averages.

Transient episodes of mild environmental oxygenation and oxidative continental weathering during the late Archean

It is not known whether environmental O2 levels increased in a linear fashion or fluctuated dynamically between the evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis and the later Great Oxidation Event. New rhenium-osmium isotope data from the late Archean Mount McRae Shale, Western Australia, reveal a transient episode of oxidative continental weathering more than 50 million years before the onset of the Great Oxidation Event. A depositional age of 2495 ± 14 million years and an initial (187)Os/(188)Os of 0.34 ± 0.19 were obtained for rhenium- and molybdenum-rich black shales. The initial (187)Os/(188)Os is higher than the mantle/extraterrestrial value of 0.11, pointing to mild environmental oxygenation and oxidative mobilization of rhenium, molybdenum, and radiogenic osmium from the upper continental crust and to contemporaneous transport of these metals to seawater. By contrast, stratigraphically overlying black shales are rhenium- and molybdenum-poor and have a mantle-like initial (187)Os/(188)Os of 0.06 ± 0.09, indicating a reduced continental flux of rhenium, molybdenum, and osmium to seawater because of a drop in environmental O2 levels. Transient oxygenation events, like the one captured by the Mount McRae Shale, probably separated intervals of less oxygenated conditions during the late Archean.

High-precision geochronology confirms voluminous magmatism before, during, and after Earth's most severe extinction

The end-Permian mass extinction was the most severe in the Phanerozoic, extinguishing more than 90% of marine and 75% of terrestrial species in a maximum of 61 ± 48 ky. Because of broad temporal coincidence between the biotic crisis and one of the most voluminous continental volcanic eruptions since the origin of animals, the Siberian Traps large igneous province (LIP), a causal connection has long been suggested. Magmatism is hypothesized to have caused rapid injection of massive amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, driving climate change and subsequent destabilization of the biosphere. Establishing a causal connection between magmatism and mass extinction is critically dependent on accurately and precisely knowing the relative timing of the two events and the flux of magma. New U/Pb dates on Siberian Traps LIP lava flows, sills, and explosively erupted rocks indicate that (i) about two-thirds of the total lava/pyroclastic volume was erupted over ~300 ky, before and concurrent with the end-Permian mass extinction; (ii) eruption of the balance of lavas continued for at least 500 ky after extinction cessation; and (iii) massive emplacement of sills into the shallow crust began concomitant with the mass extinction and continued for at least 500 ky into the early Triassic. This age model is consistent with Siberian Traps LIP magmatism as a trigger for the end-Permian mass extinction and suggests a role for magmatism in suppression of post-extinction biotic recovery.

New investigations at Kalambo Falls, Zambia: Luminescence chronology, site formation, and archaeological significance

Fluvial deposits can provide excellent archives of early hominin activity but may be complex to interpret, especially without extensive geochronology. The Stone Age site of Kalambo Falls, northern Zambia, has yielded a rich artefact record from dominantly fluvial deposits, but its significance has been restricted by uncertainties over site formation processes and a limited chronology. Our new investigations in the centre of the Kalambo Basin have used luminescence to provide a chronology and have provided key insights into the geomorphological and sedimentological processes involved in site formation. Excavations reveal a complex assemblage of channel and floodplain deposits. Single grain quartz optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) measurements provide the most accurate age estimates for the youngest sediments, but in older deposits the OSL signal from some grains is saturated. A different luminescence signal from quartz, thermally transferred OSL (TT-OSL), can date these older deposits. OSL and TT-OSL results are combined to provide a chronology for the site. Ages indicate four phases of punctuated deposition by the dominantly laterally migrating and vertically aggrading Kalambo River (∼500-300 ka, ∼300-50 ka, ∼50-30 ka, ∼1.5-0.49 ka), followed by deep incision and renewed lateral migration at a lower topographic level. A conceptual model for site formation provides the basis for improved interpretation of the generation, preservation, and visibility of the Kalambo archaeological record. This model highlights the important role of intrinsic meander dynamics in site formation and does not necessarily require complex interpretations that invoke periodic blocking of the Kalambo River, as has previously been suggested. The oldest luminescence ages place the Mode 2/3 transition between ∼500 and 300 ka, consistent with other African and Asian sites where a similar transition can be found. The study approach adopted here can potentially be applied to other fluvial Stone Age sites throughout Africa and beyond.

A simple-rapid method to separate uranium, thorium, and protactinium for U-series age-dating of materials

Uranium-series dating techniques require the isolation of radionuclides in high yields and in fractions free of impurities. Within this context, we describe a novel-rapid method for the separation and purification of U, Th, and Pa. The method takes advantage of differences in the chemistry of U, Th, and Pa, utilizing a commercially-available extraction chromatographic resin (TEVA) and standard reagents. The elution behavior of U, Th, and Pa were optimized using liquid scintillation counting techniques and fractional purity was evaluated by alpha-spectrometry. The overall method was further assessed by isotope dilution alpha-spectrometry for the preliminary age determination of an ancient carbonate sample obtained from the Lake Bonneville site in western Utah (United States). Preliminary evaluations of the method produced elemental purity of greater than 99.99% and radiochemical recoveries exceeding 90% for U and Th and 85% for Pa. Excellent purity and yields (76% for U, 96% for Th and 55% for Pa) were also obtained for the analysis of the carbonate samples and the preliminary Pa and Th ages of about 39,000 years before present are consistent with (14)C-derived age of the material.
