Abstract
Peripheral nerve injury is a critical condition that can disrupt nerve functions. Despite the progress in engineering artificial nerve guidance conduits (NGCs), nerve regeneration remains challenging. Here, we developed new nanofibrous NGCs using polycaprolactone (PCL) and chitosan (CH) containing piracetam (PIR)/vitamin B12(VITB12) with an electrospinning method. The lumen of NGCs was coated by hyaluronic acid (HA) to promote regeneration in sciatic nerve injury. The NGCs were characterized via Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), tensile, swelling, contact angle, degradation, and drug release tests. Neuronal precursor cell line (PCL12 cell) and rat mesenchymal stem cells derived from bone marrow (MSCs) were seeded on the nanofibrous conduits. After that, the biocompatibility of the NGCs was evaluated by the 2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining, and SEM images. The SEM demonstrated that PCL/CH/PIR/VITB12 NGCs had nonaligned, interconnected, smooth fibers. The mechanical properties of these NGCs were similar to rat sciatic nerve. These conduits had an appropriate swelling and degradation rate. The In Vitro studies exhibited favorable biocompatibility of the PCL/CH/PIR/VITB12 NGCs towards PC12 cells and MSCs. The in vitro studies exhibited favorable biocompatibility of the PCL/CH/PIR/VIT B12 NGCs towards MSCs and PC12 cells. To analyze functional efficacy, NGCs were implanted into a 10 mm Wistar rat sciatic nerve gap and bridged the proximal and distal stump of the defect. After three months, the results of sciatic functional index (55.3 ± 1.8), hot plate latency test (5.6 ± 0.5 s), gastrocnemius muscle wet weight-loss (38.57 ± 1.6 %) and histopathological examination using hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) /toluidine blue/ Anti-Neurofilament (NF200) staining demonstrated that the produced conduit recovered motor and sensory functions and had comparable nerve regeneration compared to the autograft that can be as the gold standard to bridge the nerve gaps.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteochondral lesions of the talus are common in patients suffering even minor trauma; timely diagnosis and treatment can prevent the development of early osteoarthritis. The objectives of this systematic review and meta-analysis were to evaluate the effects of additional procedures on arthroscopic ankle microperforations for osteochondral lesions. METHODS A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed-Medline, Cochrane Central, and Google Scholar to select clinical studies analyzing the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), hyaluronic acid (HA), and bone marrow concentrate (BMC) procedures. Ten articles following PRISMA guidelines with a total of 464 patients were included in this review. Quality assessment using MINORS was performed, and all studies demonstrated high quality. RESULTS The results of the systematic review showed benefits in all patients undergoing infiltrative therapy with PRP, hyaluronic acid, and BMC. The best results in terms of AOFAS score and VAS scale were found in patients undergoing PRP injection. The meta-analysis showed improvements in pain relief and return to daily activities in patients undergoing arthroscopic microperforations and PRP, although not reporting statistically significant results (p = 0.42). CONCLUSION All treatment strategies reported better scores compared to the control groups. Among the various treatments analyzed, the addition of PRP appears to be the most valuable probably for the larger population receiving this treatment, showing excellent outcomes in pain reduction, clinical outcomes, and return to daily activities. Abstract
Doxorubicin (DOX) is widely used against solid tumors. Niosomes are self-assembled nanocarriers of non-ionic surfactants. DOX loaded into cationic niosomes (DOX-Nio) was prepared via thin film hydration method. DOX-Nio was then decorated with a hyaluronic acid (DOX-HA-Nio) via electrostatic interaction. DOX-Nio and DOX-HA-Nio displayed a particle size of 120.0±1.02 and 182.9±2.3 nm, and charge of + 35.5±0.15 and -15.6±0.25 mV, respectively, with PDI < 0.3. DOX-HA-Nio showed a good stability regarding size and charge over 4 weeks at 4 °C and maintain their integrity after lyophilization. HPLC results showed a 94.1±4.2 % encapsulation efficiency of DOX with good entrapment and slow, prolonged DOX release even after 48 hrs. Cell viability assay showed an IC50 of 14.26 nM for the DOX-HA-Nio against MCF-7 cell line with micromolar IC50 results against CD-44 negative cell lines (NIH/3T3). DOX-HA-Nio was proven to be an effective, targeted nanocarrier for DOX against MCF-7 cell line.

Abstract
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent and debilitating musculoskeletal condition that significantly affects the quality of life of millions of individuals worldwide. In recent years, cooled radiofrequency ablation (CRFA) has become a viable treatment option for knee OA. This review thoroughly evaluated the existing literature on CRFA therapy for knee OA. It delved into the mechanisms behind CRFA, evaluated its clinical efficacy, and investigated potential avenues for future research and application. The insights gained from this review are crucial for healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers, offering an updated perspective on CRFA's role as a viable therapeutic option for knee OA.

Abstract
Chondral and osteochondral lesions encompass several acute or chronic defects of the articular cartilage and/or subchondral bone. These lesions can result from several different diseases and injuries, including osteochondritis dissecans, osteochondral defects, osteochondral fractures, subchondral bone osteonecrosis, and insufficiency fractures. As the cartilage has a low capacity for regeneration and self-repair, these lesions can progress to osteoarthritis. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the subject matter that it covers. PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar were accessed using the following keywords: "chondral lesions/defects of the femoral head", "chondral/cartilage lesions/defects of the acetabulum", "chondral/cartilage lesions/defects of the hip", "osteochondral lesions of the femoral head", "osteochondral lesions of the acetabulum", "osteochondral lesions of the hip", "osteochondritis dissecans," "early osteoarthritis of the hip," and "early stage avascular necrosis". Hip osteochondral injuries can cause significant damage to the articular surface and diminish the quality of life. It can be difficult to treat such injuries, especially in patients who are young and active. Several methods are used to treat chondral and osteochondral injuries of the hip, such as mesenchymal stem cells and cell-based treatment, surgical repair, and microfractures. Realignment of bony anatomy may also be necessary for optimal outcomes. Despite several treatments being successful, there is a lack of head-to-head comparisons and large sample size studies in the current literature. Additional research will be required to provide appropriate clinical recommendations for treating chondral/osteochondral injuries of the hip joint.

Abstract
Objective To describe the efficacy of using viscosupplementation in patients with hemophilic arthropathy (HA), on pain, limb functionality, and quality of life. Methods A systematic review of the literature was performed following the PRISMA guidelines without limitations of language or year of publication. The search was performed on the following medical databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, BVS/BIREME, Scopus, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, and PROQUEST in April 2020. The search used the following word: (hemophilia AND joint diseases) OR (haemophilic arthropathy OR hemophilic arthropathy) AND viscosupplementation. Results The systematic review identified 127 articles, 10 of which were selected for data extraction and qualitative analysis. The 10 selected articles included 297 joints with HA in 177 hemophilic subjects. Our review showed positive results in alleviating pain and improving functional capacity, and quality of life. No major adverse effects were observed. Conclusion There is a lack of scientific evidence regarding viscosupplementation with hyaluronic acid, but the results presented in this research suggest that it is an effective and safe therapeutic option to alleviate pain and improve functional capacity in patients with HA. Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this systematic review was to analyse the available clinical evidence on intra-articular knee injections for the treatment of degenerative cartilage lesions and osteoarthritis (OA) in sport-active patients. METHODS A literature search was performed in July 2023 according to the PRISMA guidelines on three electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science). Studies addressing intra-articular injections for degenerative knee cartilage lesions or knee OA in sport-active patients were included. The Downs and Black's "checklist for measuring quality" was used to evaluate risk of bias and quality of the included studies. RESULTS Only 10 clinical studies for a total of 296 sport-active patients were included, with a publication trend increasing over time. The studies were 9 case series and 1 RCT; 7 studies focused on hyaluronic acid (HA), 2 studies focused on platelet-rich plasma (PRP), while 1 study compared HA and PRP. Overall, safety and positive clinical findings were for both HA and PRP, although not always with satisfactory results in terms of return to sport. The Downs and Black evaluation showed an overall poor quality of the included studies, with an average score of 21.1 points (range 19-25). CONCLUSIONS The available clinical evidence is still limited, with only a few studies published and an overall low-quality of evidence, suggesting a potential role of HA and PRP injections to treat these patients. However, further high-level trials are needed to confirm the real benefits of these treatments for the management of sport-active patients affected by degenerative cartilage lesions or OA of the knee.

Abstract
Acute viral rhinosinusitis (viral ARS), or commonly referred to as the "common cold", is caused by respiratory viruses that cause disruption of the airway epithelial barrier and mucociliary dysfunction. Treatment of ARS is mainly symptomatic, with xylometazoline, a direct-acting α-adrenoceptor agonist, commonly used as a nasal decongestant. Unfortunately, this treatment does not resolve the epithelial dysfunction observed in ARS, and its use might negatively impact the nasal mucosa causing issues such as dryness, stinging, burning, rebound congestion, as well as atrophy. In light of this, a novel nasal spray formulation containing both xylometazoline and hyaluronic acid (HA) was developed to provide a more effective and safer treatment for viral ARS. HA is a natural polysaccharide known to hydrate and moisturise the upper respiratory tract, maintain the integrity of the nasal mucosa, and promote mucociliary clearance and wound healing. To investigate the potential of this combination, this study was conducted using the nasal MucilAirTMin vitro model and high-speed phase-contrast microscopy to examine the effect of xylometazoline and HA on ciliary function by measuring ciliary beat frequency and their cytotoxicity by morphological, histological and ultrastructural analysis. This research is the first to assess the effects of a specific dose and molecular weight of HA as an active pharmaceutical ingredient in nasal spray formulations. The combination of a fast-acting decongestant and an additional active agent targeting nasal epithelial dysfunction has the potential to provide an improved, reliable and safe treatment for viral ARS, and may serve as the basis for future clinical studies.

Abstract
Background Inhaled hypertonic saline (HS) is an effective mucolytic agent in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). However, adverse events can impair the clinical utility of hypertonic saline (HS) in this patient population. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effectiveness of hyaluronic acid (HA) in reducing these adverse events. Methods A literature search was conducted across three electronic databases (Medline, Cochrane Central, and EMBASE) from inception through February 2023. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the impact of hyaluronic acid (HA) in reducing adverse events in patients taking hypertonic saline (HS) for CF were included in the analysis. Outcomes of interest included cough, throat irritation, unpleasant taste, and FEV1. Evaluations were reported as risk ratios (RRs) and mean differences (MDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). The Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool (CRBT) was employed to assess the quality of RCTs. The New Castle Ottawa Scale was used to assess the quality of observational studies. Results From the 1960 articles retrieved from the initial search, five relevant studies (n=236 patients) were included in the final analysis. Compared with patients only on HS, patients with HS and HA were significantly less likely to experience cough (RR: 0.45; 95% CI, 0.28-0.72, p=0.001), throat irritation (RR: 0.43; 95% CI, 0.22-0.81, p= 0.009), and unpleasant smell (RR: 0.43; 95% CI, 0.23 - 0.80, p=0.09). In addition, patients with HS with HA had significantly less forced expiratory volume (FEV1) (MD: -2.97; 95% CI, -3.79-2.15, p=0.52) compared to patients only on HS. Discussion The addition of HA to HS was linked to a better tolerability profile. When HS was coupled with HA, there was a reduction in all side effects. This may permit tolerance of the medication in otherwise difficult patients, improve adherence to patients receiving frequent inhalations, and improve therapeutic outcomes. Conclusion The addition of HA is advantageous in CF patients who require continuous HS therapy and have previously shown poor tolerance to therapy.

Abstract
Hair loss is a common condition that can have a negative impact on an individual's quality of life. The severe side effects and the low efficacy of current hair loss medications create unmet needs in the field of hair loss treatment. Hyaluronan and Proteoglycan Link Protein 1 (HAPLN1), one of the components of the extracellular matrix, has been shown to play a role in maintaining its integrity. HAPLN1 was examined for its ability to impact hair growth with less side effects than existing hair loss treatments. HAPLN1 was predominantly expressed in the anagen phase in three stages of the hair growth cycle in mice and promotes the proliferation of human hair matrix cells. Also, recombinant human HAPLN1 (rhHAPLN1) was shown to selectively increase the levels of transforming growth factor-β receptor II in human hair matrix cells. Furthermore, we observed concomitant activation of the ERK1/2 signaling pathway following treatment with rhHAPLN1. Our results indicate that rhHAPLN1 elicits its cell proliferation effect via the TGF-β2-induced ERK1/2 pathway. The prompt entering of the hair follicles into the anagen phase was observed in the rhHAPLN1-treated group, compared to the vehicle-treated group. Insights into the mechanism underlying such hair growth effects of HAPLN1 will provide a novel potential strategy for treating hair loss with much lower side effects than the current treatments.

Abstract
Objectives: The focused question of this systematic review was "does hyaluronic acid (HA) injection in areas of interdental papillary deficiency reduce black triangles?" Materials and Methods: A systematic literature search was performed to find clinical studies on human patients with a minimum of 6-month follow-up, published in English from 2005 to May 2020. There were two outcome variables: black triangle area (BTA) change after treatment at different measurement time points compared with baseline, and patient reported outcome measures (PROMs), when available. Results: Of eight eligible articles (2 randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and 6 non-randomized, non-placebo controlled clinical studies), seven reported that HA injections had a positive impact on reduction of BTA and subsequent papillary augmentation. Six studies were included in meta-analysis and showed that the intervention led to a pooled reduction percentage of 57.7% in BTA after 6 months. Although there were clinical diversities between the studies, all the studies applied the same concentration of HA (approximately 2%), 2-3 mm apical to the papilla tip in several intervals. Some degrees of relapse were reported in some studies. Conclusion: Within the limits of this study, this systematic review and meta-analysis showed that HA injection can serve as an efficient minimally-invasive treatment for small interdental papillary deficiencies. It is essential to conduct further randomized clinical studies with prolonged follow-ups in order to support this conclusion.

Abstract
Regeneration of calvarial bone remains a major challenge in the clinic as available options do not sufficiently regenerate bone in larger defect sizes. Calvarial bone regeneration cases involving secondary medical conditions, such as brain herniation during traumatic brain injury (TBI) treatment, further exacerbate treatment options. Hydrogels are well-positioned for severe TBI treatment, given their innate flexibility and potential for bone regeneration to treat TBI in a single-stage surgery. The current study evaluated a photocrosslinking pentenoate-modified hyaluronic acid polymer with thiolated demineralized bone matrix (i.e., TDBM hydrogel) capable of forming a completely interconnected hydrogel matrix for calvarial bone regeneration. The TDBM hydrogel demonstrated a setting time of 120 s, working time of 3 to 7 days, negligible change in setting temperature, physiological setting pH, and negligible cytotoxicity, illustrating suitable performance for in vivo application. Side-by-side ovine calvarial bone defects (19 mm diameter) were employed to compare the TDBM hydrogel to the standard-of-care control material DBX®. After 16 weeks, the TDBM hydrogel had comparable healing to DBX® as demonstrated by mechanical push-out testing (~800 N) and histology. Although DBX® had 59% greater new bone volume compared to the TDBM hydrogel via micro-computed tomography, both demonstrated minimal bone regeneration overall (15 to 25% of defect volume). The current work presents a method for comparing the regenerative potential of new materials to clinical products using a side-by-side cranial bone defect model. Comparison of novel biomaterials to a clinical product control (i.e., standard-of-care) provides an important baseline for successful regeneration and potential for clinical translation.

Abstract
Background Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) is viewed as a keystone microorganism in the pathogenesis of periodontal and peri-implant diseases. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is believed to exert antimicrobial activity. The aim of this study is to assess the in-vitro growth and biofilm formation of P. gingivalis under HA and compare the effect of HA to that of azithromycin (AZM) and chlorhexidine (CHX). Materials and methods In each material, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), 50% MIC, 25% MIC, and 12.5% MIC were tested. The growth of P. gingivalis was evaluated by absorbance spectrophotometry after 48 h. A biofilm inhibition assay was performed on a 72-hour culture by washing planktonic bacterial cells, fixing and staining adherent cells, and measuring the variation in stain concentrations relative to the untreated control using absorbance spectrophotometry. Results The results show that the overall growth of P. gingivalis after 48 h was 0.048 ± 0.030, 0.008 ± 0.013, and 0.073 ± 0.071 under HA, AZM, and CHX, respectively, while the untreated control reached 0.236 ± 0.039. HA was also able to significantly reduce the biofilm formation of P. gingivalis by 64.30 % ± 22.39, while AZM and CHX reduced biofilm formation by 91.16 %±12.58 and 88.35 %±17.11, respectively. Conclusions High molecular-weight HA significantly inhibited the growth of P. gingivalis. The overall effect of HA on the growth of P. gingivalis was similar to that of CHX but less than that of AZM. HA was also able to significantly reduce the biofilm formation of P. gingivalis. However, the ability of HA to prevent the biofilm formation of P. gingivalis was generally less than that of both AZM and CHX.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF), Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and ozone as effective treatment approaches in knee osteoarthritis management from Iran Health care perspective. METHODS A decision tree model was conducted to assess the cost-effectiveness of four common intra-articular treatment approaches in patients with mild and moderate knee osteoarthritis. The data on clinical effectiveness was obtained from a randomized controlled trial (RCT) conducted in Iran and used to estimate utility values. The direct medical costs were estimated according to tariffs for public medical centers and hospitals, approved by the Iran Ministry of Health and Medical Education in 2021. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) and the net monetary benefit (NMB) were used to evaluate the cost-utility analysis. Deterministic and probabilistic sensitivity analyses are performed to investigate the robustness of the results and account for the different sources of uncertainty. RESULTS In this study, HA intra-articular injection-related costs ($581.67/patient) were defined as the highest cost, followed by PRGF ($328.10/patient), PRP (318.58/patient), and Ozone (103.20/patient). According to the utility value, PRP and PRGF (0.68) have the same and the most utility among Intra-articular injections in knee osteoarthritis management. However, the PRP injection method was identified as the most cost-effective intervention due to its high NMB and ICER estimates. Based on the Monte Carlo Simulation, PR intervention, compared to other ones, was introduced as the dominant strategy regarding knee OA management, with a WTP of $10,000 for 100% of cases. CONCLUSION The study result demonstrated that intra-articular injection of PRP, compare to other injections, is a cost-effective treatment option for patients with mild and moderate knee osteoarthritis. In addition, intra-articular injection of PRP was identified as the best injection, with the highest level of net monetary benefit, for knee OA management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Perirectal spacers may be beneficial to reduce rectal side effects from radiotherapy (RT). Here, we present the impact of a hyaluronic acid (HA) perirectal spacer on rectal dose as well as spacer stability, long-term gastrointestinal (GI) and genitourinary (GU) toxicity and patient-reported outcome (PRO). METHODS In this phase II study 81 patients with low- and intermediate-risk prostate cancer received transrectal injections with HA before external beam RT (78 Gy in 39 fractions). The HA spacer was evaluated with MRI four times; before (MR0) and after HA-injection (MR1), at the middle (MR2) and at the end (MR3) of RT. GI and GU toxicity was assessed by physician for up to five years according to the RTOG scale. PROs were collected using the Swedish National Prostate Cancer Registry and Prostate cancer symptom scale questionnaires. RESULTS There was a significant reduction in rectal V70% (54.6 Gy) and V90% (70.2 Gy) between MR0 and MR1, as well as between MR0 to MR2 and MR3. From MR1 to MR2/MR3, HA thickness decreased with 28%/32% and CTV-rectum space with 19%/17% in the middle level. The cumulative late grade ≥ 2 GI toxicity at 5 years was 5% and the proportion of PRO moderate or severe overall bowel problems at 5 years follow-up was 12%. Cumulative late grade ≥ 2 GU toxicity at 5 years was 12% and moderate or severe overall urinary problems at 5 years were 10%. CONCLUSION We show that the HA spacer reduced rectal dose and long-term toxicity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Provoked vestibulodynia (PVD) is a challenging and distressing problem for women. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of hyaluronic acid (HA) in the management of this condition. METHOD This is a retrospective review of 12 women diagnosed with PVD and treated with HA (19 mg/mL) applied, point-by-point, to the vestibular region at 2 mm intervals and at a depth of 0.5 mm. Women completed a pain VAS and a Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) before and 45 days after treatment. RESULTS An improvement was observed both in mean FSFI scores (17.8 to 23.3; p = 0.003) and mean VAS scores (7.2 to 4.1; p = 0.002) after HA application respectively. However, on a telephone interview 3 months post treatment, five women (41.7 %) complained of recurrence of their dyspareunia. CONCLUSION HA is a promising management option in provoked vestibulodynia. However, further larger studies with possible alternative regimens and longer follow-up are required.

Abstract
Background Chemotherapy drugs can cause drug resistance and other problems when treating lung cancer, which leads to treatment failure. Ursolic acid (UA) is used in formulations based on traditional Chinese medicine. UA has excellent anti-tumor effects, but they are limited by solubility and non-specificity to tumor cells. Objectives To overcome these issues, we created a novel hyaluronic acid (HA)-targeted liposome system for delivering UA (HA-Lipo/UA) to explore the targeting and anti-tumor effects of UA. Methods We constructed the HA-Lipo/UA delivery system by the thin film hydration method. The uptake and localization of UA were detected by flow cytometry and microscope. Cell proliferation of A549 cells was detected by MTT assays. Apoptosis and reactive oxygen species (ROS) expression of A549 cells were also evaluated after being treated with HA-Lipo/UA. Western blot analysis evaluated the anti-tumor mechanism of HA-Lipo/UA. Results HA-Lipo/UA exhibited favorable targeting of the cluster of differentiation (CD)44-overexpressing A549 cells. HA-Lipo/UA exhibited significant inhibition of the proliferation of A549 cells and induced their apoptosis compared with the corresponding monotherapies. HA-Lipo/UA induced overexpression of reactive oxygen species and upregulated expression of p53 and apoptosis-related protein in the transforming growth factor-β signaling (ARTS) pathway, which induced cytochrome-c release, activation of caspase-3, and promoted mitochondrial apoptosis in A549 cells. Conclusions Taken together, these data suggested that HA-Lipo/UA could be used to target tumor cells.

Abstract
Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory immune-mediated condition that has been identified as a potentially malignant oral disorder. Various therapies have been proposed for its management as alternative to corticosteroids. However, no definitive treatment has been identified that can result in complete remission or minimal recurrence. Hyaluronic acid has recently been used as an alternative therapy for the management of OLP. This study aimed to systematically review the effectiveness of Hyaluronic acid in the management of symptomatic OLP. Online electronic databases and manual searches were performed for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in English between January 2010 and April 2022. RCTs were identified that compared the efficacy of hyaluronic acid and other interventional therapies at baseline and during follow-up. The Cochrane Risk of Bias tool was used to assess the quality of the included studies. Visual analog scale (VAS) scores, Thongprasom sign scores, lesion size, degree of erythema, clinical severity, and disease severity were assessed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Seven studies were analyzed. Five studies reported a high risk of bias while the remaining two studies reported an unclear risk of bias. The overall quantitative assessment of size, symptoms, degree of erythema, and sign score in OLP lesions treated with HA was not statistically significant compared to that in the control group (P > 0.05). In addition, subgroup analysis comparing HA with placebo or corticosteroids did not yield statistically significant (P > 0.05) results. Qualitatively, both HA and tacrolimus resulted in an effective reduction in signs and symptoms. Clinical/disease severity index/scores were inconsistent. A high degree of heterogeneity was observed among the included studies. None of the included studies reported the side effects of HA. These findings suggest that corticosteroids, tacrolimus, placebo, and HA could be equally effective in OLP management. The clinical/disease severity index or score reduction cannot be determined with certainty. Thus, OLP can be treated with HA as an alternative therapy. Owing to limited clinical trials on HA, high heterogeneity, and high risk of bias in the included studies, definitive conclusions cannot be derived.

Abstract
Hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels have been used for a multitude of applications, perhaps most notably for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, owing to the versatility of the polymer and its tunable nature. Various groups have investigated the impact of hydrogel parameters (e.g., molecular weight, concentration, stiffness, etc.) in vitro and in vivo to achieve desired material performance characteristics. A limitation in the literature to date has been that altering one hydrogel parameter (a 'manipulated variable') to achieve a given hydrogel characteristic (a 'controlled variable') changes two variables at a time (e.g., altering molecular weight and/or concentration to investigate cell response to stiffness). Therefore, if cell responses differ, it may be possible that more than one variable caused the changes in observed responses. In the current study, we leveraged thiol-ene click chemistry with a crosslinker to develop a method that minimizes material performance changes and permitted multiple material properties to be independently held constant to evaluate a single variable at a time. Independent control was accomplished by tuning the concentration of crosslinker to achieve an effectively constant stiffness for different HA hydrogel molecular weights and polymer concentrations. Specific formulations were thereby identified that enabled the molecular weight (76 - 1550 kDa), concentration (2 - 10%), or stiffness (~1 - 350 kPa) to be varied while the other two were held constant, a key technical achievement. The response of rat mesenchymal stem cells to varying molecular weight, concentration, and stiffness demonstrated consistent upregulation of osteocalcin gene expression. The methodology presented to achieve independent control of hydrogel parameters may potentially be adopted by others for alternative hydrogel polymers, cell types, or cell culture medium compositions to minimize confounding variables in experimental hydrogel designs.

Abstract
As a consequence of the current trend of performing minimally invasive surgery, the use of injectable fillers has progressively increased in aesthetic surgery. Vascular complications resulting due to filling of hyaluronic acid (HA) in the chin have been previously reported. However, clinical evidence regarding the results of treatment of lingual artery occlusion with super-selective intra-arterial dissolution is lacking. Herein, we reported a case of lingual artery occlusion resulting due to HA filling for which tongue arteriography and catheter-directed dissolution were implemented via femoral artery intubation for the first time in the literature. The aim of this paper is to discuss the rare complications arising due to chin augmentation and their treatment to provide a deeper understanding of the use and side effects of HA in this procedure.

Abstract
Articular cartilage is a layered tissue with a complex, heterogenous structure and lubricated surface which is challenging to reproduce using traditional tissue engineering methods. 3D printing techniques have enabled engineering of complex scaffolds for cartilage regeneration, but constructs fail to replicate the unique zonal layers, and limited cytocompatible crosslinkers exist. To address the need for mechanically robust, layered scaffolds, we developed an extracellular matrix particle-based biomaterial ink (pECM biomaterial ink) which can be extruded, polymerizes via disulfide bonding, and restores surface lubrication. Our cartilage pECM biomaterial ink utilizes functionalized hyaluronan, a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan, crosslinked directly to decellularized tissue particles (ø 40-100 µm). We experimentally determined that hyaluronan functionalized with thiol groups (t-HA) forms disulfide bonds with the ECM particles to form a 3D network. We show that two inks can be co-printed to create a layered cartilage scaffold with bulk compressive and surface (friction coefficient, adhesion, and roughness) mechanics approaching values measured on native cartilage. We demonstrate that our printing process enables the addition of macropores throughout the construct, increasing the viability of introduced cells by 10%. The delivery of these 3D printed scaffolds to a defect is straightforward, customizable to any shape, and adheres to surrounding tissue.

Abstract
Introduction Penile enhancement procedures are becoming more common in men looking to achieve a more desirable penile aesthetic. We describe a case of post-procedural dermatitis after receiving penile girth enhancement injections in an adult male and discuss management of penile girth injection side effects. Materials and Methods We review and present our case alongside a discussion of girth injection complications. Results Patient's exam and symptoms improved after treatment. Conclusion Post-procedural complications after penile girth injections seem to be under-reported and unfortunately can result in severe deformity and dysfunction of the penis. Abstract
Background The molecular weight of hyaluronic acid (HyA) depends on the type of organ in the body. When HyA of the desired molecular weight is implanted into the human body for regeneration of damaged tissue, it is degraded by hyaluronidase in associated with an inflammatory response. This study sought to evaluate the effects of HyA molecular weight and concentration on pro- and anti-inflammatory responses in murine macrophages. Methods The structures and molecular weights of HyAs (LMW-10, MMW-100, MMW-500, and HMW-1,500) were confirmed by 1 H NMR and gel permeation chromatography (GPC), respectively. After treatment of murine macrophages with a low (10 µg/mL) or high (100 µg/mL) concentration of each molecular weight HyA, cells were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and changes in immune response in both LPS-stimulated and untreated macrophages were evaluated by assessing nitric oxide (NO) production, and analyzing expression of pro- and anti-inflammatory genes including by RT-PCR. Results Molecular weights of LMW-10, MMW-100, MMW-500, and HMW-1,500 were 13,241 ± 161, 96,531 ± 1,167, 512,657 ± 8,545, and 1,249,500 ± 37,477 Da, respectively. NO production by LPS-stimulated macrophages was decreased by increasing concentrations and molecular weights of HyA. At a high concentration of 100 µg/mL, HMW-1,500 reduced NO production in LPS-stimulated macrophages to about 45 %. Using NanoString technology, we also found that the immune-related genes TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, TGF-β1, IL-10, IL-11, CCL2, and Arg1 were specifically over-expressed in LPS-stimulated macrophages treated with various molecular weights of HyA. An RT-PCR analysis of gene expression showed that HMW-1,500 decreased expression of classically activated (M1) macrophage genes, such as TNF‐α, IL-6, CCL2, and IL-1β, in LPS-stimulated macrophages, whereas medium molecular-weight HyA (MMW-100 and MMW-500) instead increased expression levels of these genes. HMW-1,500 at a high concentration (100 µg/mL) significantly decreased expression of pro-inflammatory genes in LPS-stimulated macrophages. Expression of genes associated with anti-inflammatory responses (M2 phenotype), such as TGF-β1, IL-10, IL-11, and Arg1, were increased by high concentrations of MMW-500 and HMW-1,500 in LPS-stimulated macrophages. Conclusions High molecular-weight HyA (i.e., > 1,250 kDa) inhibits pro-inflammatory responses in LPS-stimulated macrophages and induces anti-inflammatory responses in a concentration dependent manner.

Abstract
Background The gold standard treatment of periodontal diseases is scaling and root planing (SRP). Different adjunctive root conditioning agents such as hyaluronic acid (HA), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), and chlorhexidine (CHX) have been used with SRP to improve the smear layer removal and the healing of periodontal tissues. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of manual scaling with or without HA, EDTA, or CHX root conditioning on the attachment and viability of human gingival fibroblasts (GF). Methods Fifteen healthy single rooted teeth were co llected and divided randomly into a scaled (n = 12) and non-scaled control group (n = 3). The scaled roots were subdivided equally into four groups; the first group did not receive any chemical treatment, while the remaining groups were treated with the conditioning agents HA or 17% EDTA or 0.2% CHX gel. Gingival fibroblasts were seeded on the top of each root and incubated for 48 h to allow attachment to the roots. The viability of fibroblasts attached to the root surface was assessed using MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) cell viability assay. Results The cell viability was the highest in the scaled only group (p = 0.0001) while the lowest was in the scaled with EDTA group (p > 0.05). The scaled group was the highest followed by the HA and CHX groups, while the EDTA group showed the lowest mean value. Conclusion SRP remains the superior method for regaining cell attachment to the root surface, leading to better periodontal health, and adjunctive therapies did not enhance the GF attachment to the root surface beyond the effect of SRP. Further studies are needed to investigate the effect of root conditioning agents on periodontally diseased teeth in vitro and compare them in vivo.

Abstract
Hyaluronidase is a family of enzymes that degrade hyaluronic acid (HA). It is found to increase vascular permeability and temporarily disrupt the extracellular matrix, promoting diffusion of substances through tissues. Alongside its applications in ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynaecology, musculoskeletal medicine, radiology and drug and fluid administration, hyaluronidase has a number of roles in the field of plastic surgery. The popularity of HA fillers in recent years has led to an increase in the usage of hyaluronidase in the treatment of filler-related complications. The purpose of this article is to review the current and future uses of hyaluronidase within the field of plastic surgery. Hyaluronidase is used as an adjunct to local anaesthetics in skin infiltration, skin graft harvesting, tumescent analgesia, managing complications of dermal fillers, treatment of extravasation injury, prevention and management of oedema, treatment of ganglion and management of scars. However, it has some limitations. Hyaluronidase is known to interact with a number of common medications. Several case reports also highlight the risk of allergic reaction to the substance. Although rare and usually mild, hyaluronidase has the potential to cause anaphylaxis. Other adverse effects include bruising and swelling. Overall, hyaluronidase appears to be a very safe, cheap and effective medication for a variety of uses in the field of plastic surgery and beyond.

Abstract
Cancer is one of the major global health problems, responsible for the second-highest number of deaths. The genetic and epigenetic changes in the oncogenes or tumor suppressor genes alter the regulatory pathways leading to its onset and progression. Conventional methods are used in appropriate combinations for the treatment. Surgery effectively treats localized tumors; however, it fails to treat metastatic tumors, leading to a spread in other organs, causing a high recurrence rate and death. Among the different strategies, the nanocarriers-based approach is highly sought for, but its nonspecific delivery can cause a profound side effect on healthy cells. Targeted nanomedicine has the advantage of targeting cancer cells specifically by interacting with the receptors overexpressed on their surface, overcoming its non-specificity to target healthy cells. Nanocarriers prepared from biodegradable and biocompatible materials are decorated with different ligands by encapsulating therapeutic or diagnostic agents or both to target cancer cells overexpressing the receptors. Scientists are now utilizing a theranostic approach to simultaneously evaluate nanocarrier bio-distribution and its effect on the treatment regime. Herein, we have summarized the recent 5-year efforts in the development of the ligands decorated biodegradable nanocarriers, as a targeted nanomedicine approach, which has been highly promising in the treatment of cancer.

Abstract
Objective: To verify whether the use of Hylan G-F20 improves saline lavage and triamcinolone injection results in the treatment of hip osteoarthritis (HOA). Methods: 82 patients with HOA categorized as grades II and III severity, according to Kellgren and Lawrence criteria, were randomized into the groups: lavage and triamcinolone (G0); lavage, triamcinolone, and 2 mL of hylan G-F20 (G1); lavage, triamcinolone, and 4mL of hylan G-F20 (G2); lavage, triamcinolone, and 6mL of hylan G-F20 (G3). The VAS, range of motion (ROM), WOMAC, and Lequesne questionnaires were administered at baseline, one, three, six, and twelve months post-injection. Results: All groups showed clinically relevant improvements (> 20%) between baseline and first month post-injection, maintaining subjective results throughout the study period (p < 0.001). We found no differences between groups in any subjective evaluations (p > 0.05, for all). G2 and G3 obtained improved flexion results up to a year (p = 0.028). Hylan groups presented an improved external rotation since the first postoperative month and maintained the results up to a year (G1, p = 0.041; G2, p = 0.007), whereas G0 showed no improvement (p = 0.336). Conclusion: Hip lavage and triamcinolone injection, with or without the use of hylan, improves pain, function, and quality of life up to a year in HOA. Hylan may improve ROM up to one year. Abstract
BACKGROUND The decline in postmenopausal serum estrogen concentration results in several changes in the vulvovaginal and vesicourethral areas, resulting in the genitourinary syndrome of menopause, including symptoms such as vaginal atrophy. AIM To evaluate the effects of hyaluronic acid in vaginal atrophy. METHODS A search strategy was developed using the following terms: "Hyaluronic Acid vaginal gel," "vaginal estrogens," "Vaginitis, Atrophic," and "Postmenopause." This strategy was used in major databases such as MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, Cochrane library, Web of Science, Virtual Health Library (BVS), Congress Abstracts, and Gray Literature (Google Scholar and British Library) for studies published until June 2020. OUTCOMES A systematic review was carried out to assess the results of atrophic vaginitis/vaginal dryness, dyspareunia, vaginal pH, and cell maturation of the studies found by the search strategy. RESULTS A total of 833 studies were identified, 528 studies were directed for reading titles and abstracts, and 515 were excluded for not meeting the selection criteria. A total of 13 studies were selected for reading the full text. 5 primary studies involving 335 women met the criteria and were included. The studies were published between the years 2011 and 2017. It was not possible to perform meta-analysis owing to the substantial heterogeneity present in the studies. The results presented suggest that treatment with hyaluronic acid, when compared with the use of estrogens, does not present a significant difference in the results obtained for the outcomes: epithelial atrophy, vaginal pH, dyspareunia, and cell maturation. CLINICAL TRANSLATION Hyaluronic acid appears to be an alternative to non-hormonal treatments for the signs of vaginal atrophy and dyspareunia. STRENGTHS & LIMITATIONS The analysis of the studies in this systemic review suggests that hyaluronic acid has efficacy similar to vaginal estrogens for the treatment of the signs of vaginal atrophy and dyspareunia. However, the included studies measured the data in different ways, causing the performance of meta-analysis to be impaired. CONCLUSION The comparisons presented suggest that hyaluronic acid has a profile of efficacy, safety, and tolerability comparable with vaginal estrogens for the treatment of symptoms of vaginal atrophy. Abstract
Objectives The aim was to investigate the efficacy of single injections of two different hyaluronic acid products, Flex Barrier and Revident, in reducing the size of black triangles to treat Nordland-Tarnow Class I and II recessions. Materials and Methods Forty adult patients were recruited with at least two upper and two lower interdental papilla defects in the front region between canine teeth. According to the Nordland-Tarnow classification of papillary defects, both Class I and Class II recessions were included in the investigation. Patients were randomly assigned to experimental groups to receive single injections of two different hyaluronic acid products, either Flex Barrier or Revident. The untreated sites served as controls. Photographs were taken before and immediately after the treatment, and again after one week and one month. To determine the size of the black triangles, Image J software was used. For statistical analysis, a mixed-design ANOVA was applied. Results Both Flex Barrier and Revident significantly decreased the size of the treated defects immediately after the treatment and also one week later (p<0.001). The beneficial effect of Revident lasted longer than Flex Barrier as it remained significant even after one month in Revident-treated patients, however, not in the Flex Barrier-treated group. Furthermore, Nordland-Tarnow Class I lesions generally showed a greater improvement than Class II lesions. Conclusion In this proof-of-concept, randomized clinical trial we have demonstrated the clinical applicability of both Flex Barrier and Revident, although Revident gave longer-lasting improvements than Flex Barrier. Further trials are needed to optimize multiple-application protocols for treating gingival black triangles.

Abstract
Objective In the present study, the applicability of hyaluronic acid-alginate (HAA) hydrogel and ovarian cells (OCs) for
the culture of mouse ovarian follicles were investigated and compared with those of alginate (ALG) and fibrin-alginate
(FA) hydrogels.
Materials and Methods In the first step of this experimental study, mechanically isolated preantral follicles from the
ovaries of two-week-old mice were encapsulated in the absence or presence of OCs in ALG, HAA, and FA hydrogels and
cultured for 14 days. The morphology, diameter, survival and antrum formation rates of the follicles and the maturation
and quality of the oocytes were evaluated during culture. In the second step, preantral follicles were cultured similar
to the first step, but for 13 days, and their gene expressions and hormonal secretion were assessed on the last day of
culture.
Results In the absence of OCs, higher numbers of ALG- and HAA-encapsulated follicles reached the antral
stage compared to FA-encapsulated follicles (P<0.05). However, a higher percentage of HAA-developed oocytes
resumed meiosis up to the germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD)/metaphase II (MII) stages in comparison with
ALG-developed oocytes (P<0.05). HAA-encapsulated follicles had significant overexpression of most of the growth
and differentiation genes, and secreted higher levels of estradiol (E2) compared to ALG- and FA-encapsulated
follicles (P<0.05). The co-culture condition increased the diameter of ALG-encapsulated follicles on day 13 of
culture (P<0.05). It also increased the survival and maturation rates of ALG- and FA-encapsulated follicles,
respectively (P<0.05). The co-culture condition improved cortical granule distribution in all groups, increased E2
and progesterone (P4) secretions in the ALG and FA groups, and androstenedione (A4) secretion in the FA group
(P<0.05).
Conclusion The present study results show that HAA hydrogel is a promising hydrogel for follicle culture. OCs
utilization could ameliorate the culture conditions regardless of the type of hydrogel.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this meta-analysis was to compare platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and hyaluronic acid (HA) in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). METHODS Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the use of PRP and HA in KOA patients were retrieved from each database from the establishment date to April 2018. Outcome measurements were the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC), visual analog scale (VAS), International Knee Documentation Committee, and Lequesne Index scores and adverse events. The pooled data were evaluated with Review Manager 5.3.5. RESULTS Fifteen RCTs (N = 1,314) were included in our meta-analysis. The present meta-analysis indicated that PRP injections reduced pain more effectively than HA injections in patients with KOA at six and 12 months of follow-up, as evaluated by the WOMAC pain score; the VAS pain score showed a significant difference at 12 months. Moreover, better functional improvement was observed in the PRP group, as demonstrated by the WOMAC function score at three, six, and 12 months. Additionally, PRP injections did not display different adverse event rates compared with HA injections. CONCLUSION In terms of long-term pain relief and functional improvement, PRP injections might be more effective than HA injections as a treatment for KOA. The optimal dosage, the timing interval and frequency of injections, and the ideal treatment for different stages of KOA remain areas of concern for future investigations.

Abstract
Purpose In this study, we used ultrasonography to monitor the use of hyaluronic acid (HA) as a filler in the face for esthetic reasons. We monitored changes in the filler shape, distribution, and relationship with adjacent anatomical structures over a 180-day period. Materials and Methods Two patients each received an ultrasound-guided injection of HA, with different products and application sites for each patient. In 1 patient, the injection was administered in the angle of the mandible, while in the other, it was administered in the zygomatic region. The injection sites were monitored via ultrasonography at 24 hours, 30 days, and 180 days, at which times the imaging characteristics of the filler were observed. All injections were performed by the same professional, as were the ultrasound exams, which were conducted using the same equipment. Results In both cases, the HA fillers were visualized using ultrasound at all time points. Some differences were observed between the cases in the images and the distribution of the pockets of filler. In 1 case, the filler appeared as a dark hypoechoic region with well-defined contours, and the material was observed to have moved posteriorly by the 180-day mark. In the other case, the material appeared hyperechoic relative to the previous case and presented no noticeable changes in its anteroposterior distribution over time. Conclusion Based on these 2 cases, ultrasonography can be a complementary tool used to monitor facial fillers over the long term, allowing for the dynamic observation of different fillers.

Abstract
Objective: To prospectively, clinically and functionally follow-up patients previously
diagnosed with lateral epicondylitis after periarticular application of
hyaluronic acid and analyze the results. Methods: All patients were previously treated conservatively and had no clinical
improvement. Data such as age, positivity for specific tests (Cozen and
Mill), visual analogue pain scale (VAS) before and during dorsiflexion of
the wrist with resistance, diagnosis time, Mayo Elbow Performance Score was
collected. Patients were reevaluated 30 and 90 days after application. Results: The positivity rates for Cozen and Mill tests were identical, starting at
100%, dropping to 50% after one month, and ending at 41.7% after 3 months.
The initial Mayo Elbow Score average was 61.3 points; 85.8 in the first
month, remaining at 85 in the third month. VAS in active force situations
had the initial average of 8.1; after one month it dropped to 3.8, and 3.6
after three months. At rest, the initial average was 5.9; after one month it
decreased to 3 and ended at 2.1 in three months. Conclusion: Patients showed improvement in pain parameters, in the Mayo Elbow Performance
Score standard, but with 25% of failure in satisfaction. Level of

Abstract
Osteoarthritis is a debilitating disease that results in pain and joint stiffness. Currently, steroidal and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and supplements aimed at restoring lubrication to the affected joint are the most successful with respect to improving patient comfort. Due to the success in lubricating therapies, there exists a keen interest to develop better therapies that mimic how lubrication occurs naturally in the joint. Here we describe the results obtained using a chondroitin sulfate chain to which is conjugated peptides that bind to either hyaluronic acid (found in high concentrations in the synovial fluid) or collagen type II (present on the cartilage surface). Our study investigates the effect of binding to the cartilage surface and interacting with hyaluronic acid on lubrication at the cartilage surface. The results described here suggest that binding to the cartilage surface is critical to supporting lubrication and did not require the addition of hyaluronic acid to reduce friction.

Abstract
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a biopolymer composed by the monomers Glucuronic Acid (GlcUA) and N-Acetyl Glucosamine (GlcNAc). It has a broad range of applications in the field of medicine, being marketed between USD 1000-5000/kg. Its primary sources include extraction of animal tissue and fermentation using pathogenic bacteria. However, in both cases, extensive purification protocols are required to prevent toxin contamination. In this study, aiming at creating a safe HA producing microorganism, the generally regarded as safe (GRAS) yeast Kluyveroymyces lactis is utilized. Initially, the hasB (UDP-Glucose dehydrogenase) gene from Xenopus laevis (xlhasB) is inserted. After that, four strains are constructed harboring different hasA (HA Synthase) genes, three of humans (hshasA1, hshasA2, and hshasA3) and one with the bacteria Pasteurella multocida (pmhasA). Transcript values analysis confirms the presence of hasA genes only in three strains. HA production is verified by scanning electron microscopy in the strain containing the pmHAS isoform. The pmHAS strain is grown in a 1.3 l bioreactor operating in a batch mode, the maximum HA levels are 1.89 g/L with a molecular weight of 2.097 MDa. This is the first study that reports HA production in K. lactis and it has the highest HA titers reported among yeast.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Specific-sized species of the carbohydrate hyaluronan elicit a variety of cellular responses mediating tissue integrity and repair, as well as regulating inflammatory responses. Orally provided hyaluronan with an average molecular weight of 35 kDa (HA35) protects mice from short-term ethanol (EtOH)-induced liver injury. This protection was associated with maintenance of the colocalization of zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) and occludin at tight junctions in the proximal colon. However, it is not known whether HA35 also protects other regions of the intestine or whether protection is due to a direct and/or indirect interaction of HA35 with the intestinal epithelium. METHODS Female C57BL/6J mice were fed an EtOH containing diet or pair-fed control diet (4 days) and treated with or without HA35 via daily gavage during the last 3 days of EtOH feeding. Intestinal morphology and tight junction integrity were assessed. Differentiated Caco-2 cells were transfected or not with scrambled siRNA or siRNA targeting layilin, a hyaluronan receptor. Caco-2 cells were treated with or without HA35 prior to challenge with EtOH. Localization of tight junction proteins, fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-dextran permeability, and transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) were evaluated. RESULTS While short-term EtOH did not result in any apparent changes in the gross morphology of the intestine, colocalization of ZO-1 and occludin at tight junctions was decreased in the proximal and distal colon. HA35 prevented these effects of EtOH. In differentiated Caco-2 cells, EtOH decreased the localization of ZO-1 and occludin at tight junctions and increased permeability of FITC-dextran. At higher concentrations, EtOH also decreased TEER. Pretreatment with HA35 prevented these changes. When the hyaluronan receptor layilin was knocked down in Caco-2 cells, HA35 no longer protected cells from EtOH-induced loss of tight junctions. CONCLUSIONS Taken together, these data indicate that HA35 interacts with layilin on intestinal epithelial cells and maintains intestinal tight junction integrity during short-term EtOH exposure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies about the clinical utility of fillers on penile augmentation (PA) are lacking. Furthermore, no randomized study has compared the utilities of fillers. AIM To compare the efficacy and safety between hyaluronic acid (HA) and polylactic acid (PLA) filler injection for PA. METHODS This prospective, randomized patient/evaluator-blind, comparative multicenter study consisted of an initial 2-week baseline period and 48-week patient/evaluator-blind post-injection period. 72 patients with small penis syndrome were enrolled from 3 institutions between March-July 2016. Patients were divided into 2 groups: the HA group, comprising 36 patients injected with HA, and the PLA group, comprising 36 patients injected with PLA. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Penile girth and satisfaction were assessed at baseline and at 4, 12, 24, and 48 weeks after injection. RESULTS Penile girth increases adequately lasted ≤48 weeks in both groups (16.95 ± 10.53 and 13.49 ± 9.98 mm of mean increase in the HA and PLA groups, respectively; P < .001). The mean penile girth increase in the HA group was significantly greater than that in the PLA group at 4 weeks (P < .001). Subsequently, it gradually decreased and was no longer significantly different at 48 weeks (P = .075). Satisfaction levels increased after injection and were maintained ≤48 weeks. No significant differences were observed in the overall satisfaction level between the groups (P > .05). Filler injection-related adverse events were mild and transient and occurred in 1 and 3 patients in the HA and PLA groups, respectively. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS This study provides an overview of the efficacy and safety of HA and PLA fillers, which are the most commonly used soft tissue fillers for PA. STRENGTH AND LIMITATIONS This study, to our knowledge, is the first to compare the efficacy and safety between different filler injections for human PA. However, it was impossible to perform a researcher-blinded trial because of the unique properties of fillers, and 31 patients (43.1%) were dropped during the study period. CONCLUSIONS Both HA and PLA filler injections for PA led to a significant augmentative effect without serious adverse events and had clinically comparable efficacy and safety. Abstract
Hyaluronic acid (HA) has long been studied in diverse applications. It is a naturally occurring linear polysaccharide in a family of unbranched glycosaminoglycans, which consists of repeating di-saccharide units of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and D-glucuronic acid. It is almost ubiquitous in humans and other vertebrates, where it participates in many key processes, including cell signaling, tissue regeneration, wound healing, morphogenesis, matrix organization, and pathobiology. HA is biocompatible, biodegradable, muco-adhesive, hygroscopic, and viscoelastic. These unique physico-chemical properties have been exploited for several medicinal purposes, including recent uses in the adjuvant treatment for chronic inflammatory disease and to reduce pain and accelerate healing after third molar intervention. This review focuses on the post-operative effect of HA after third molar intervention along with its various physio-chemical, biochemical, and pharmaco-therapeutic uses.

Abstract
Background: The 33-mg/mL hyaluronic acid (HA) formulation is a highly concentrated, cross-linked, cohesive, smooth, and completely reversible volumizing filler approved by Conformité Européene. For the first time, we aimed to evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of the 33- mg/mL HA filler for soft tissue augmentation in the treatment of facial wrinkles. Materials and Methods: After optimal wrinkle correction was achieved in the patients undergoing treatment by injecting the 33-mg/mL HA filler at the injection site plus one touch-up at a 2-week interval, the safety and efficacy of the filler were assessed on the 5-point Facial Volume Loss Scale through the 1-year study period. Patients were evaluated daily for 14 days and after 6 and 12 months post-treatment. Results: A total of 86 subjects were treated. The mean wrinkle scores of the patients were 3.95+0.79 (range of 3-5) before treatment, 2.3+0.94 (range 1-5) six months after treatment, and 2.93+1.29 (range of 1-5) one year after treatment. Clinically significant mean wrinkle correction (P=0.001) was still evident at>12 months of treatment through 33-mg/ mL HA formulation. A clinically significant correction at>12 months after treatment was maintained by 79% of patients. Nodule formation and swelling were more frequent when the 33- mg/mL HA filler was used compared with the use of less concentrated HA fillers. One patient developed angioedema-like swelling and induration last few months. Conclusion: The 33-mg/ mL HA filler can provide long-term correction lasting for one year or more. Adverse effects, especially swelling and nodule formation were more common in this filler compared with less concentrated HA fillers. The side effects were correlated with the volume of the injected filler. We recommend using this concentration with low volume or combining high volume with lower concentration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of intravesical hyaluronic acid (HA) treatment on inflammatory cells and the severity of inflammation in an interstitial cystitis rat model created with hydrogen chloride (HCL) via immunohistochemical studies and myeloperoxidase activity for the first time in the literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 30 adult female white Rattus Norvegicus rats were divided into 3 groups as the HCL group, hyaluronic acid treatment (HCL-HA) group and control group. Chemical cystitis was created by administering HCL(400 microL,10 mM) except control group. A single dose of intravesical HA(0.5 mL,0.8 mg/mL) was administered to the treatment group. The bladder tissues of all subjects were immunohistochemically stained. The cell surface markers were used to evaluate inflammatory cell infiltration. Mast cell activation and IL-6 was evaluated to assess the inflammation and severity of inflammation, respectively. Myeloperoxidase activity was measured as it shows neutrophil density. Statistical significance was accepted as P<0.05. RESULTS It was observed that there was rich monocyte, T lymphocyte, B lymphocyte, and Natural Killer cells infiltration and high IL-6 levels in the bladder tissue after the intravesical hydrogen chloride instillation, especially in the stroma layer(p<0.005). In the HCL-HA group, severity of inflammation had statistically significantly regressed to the levels of the control group(p<0.005). An increase was observed in the bladder myeloperoxidase activity of the HCL group compared to the other two groups(p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Single dose intravesical hyluronic acid instillation reduces inflammatory cell infiltration and the severity of bladder inflammation in the rat model of bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to develop a robust and redox-sensitive nanocarrier based on amphiphilic hyaluronic acid nanoparticles, in which the hydrophobic core was crosslinked by photo-crosslinking and the hyaluronic acid shell was crosslinked via a bioreducible disulfide linkage. Dynamic light scattering showed that the shell and core crosslinked nanocarriers were obviously more stable than core crosslinked or non-crosslinked nanoparticles. Moreover, the particle size changed as the glutathione concentration was altered, exhibiting obvious redox sensitivity. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the nanoparticle structure was denser after crosslinking. Additionally, methotrexate was effectively encapsulated into nanoparticles with high drug-loading efficiency. In vitro methotrexate release assays showed that the methotrexate-loaded bioreducible hyaluronic acid nanoparticles greatly suppressed drug release in phosphate-buffered saline (pH 7.4) without or with 20 μM glutathione. In contrast, in phosphate-buffered saline (pH 7.4) with higher glutathione concentrations (2, 5, or 10 mM), methotrexate was released more rapidly and completely from the nanocarriers in 24 h. Furthermore, methotrexate was released completely and rapidly from the nanoparticles under simulated tumor cell conditions (pH 5.0 with 10 mM glutathione), suggesting potential applications in tumor-specific drug release. In vitro anticancer activity tests showed that the inhibition rate of methotrexate-loaded nanoparticles in HeLa cells reached 94%. However, excess hyaluronic acid decreased cell toxicity. Cellular uptake studies suggested that the prepared nanoparticles were probably internalized into the cancer cells via receptor-mediated endocytosis. Overall, our data demonstrated that the bio-reducible shell and core crosslinked nanoparticles could be used as a potential carrier for cancer therapy.

Abstract
Owing to the high water content, porous structure, biocompatibility and tissue-like viscoelasticity, hydrogels have become attractive and promising biomaterials for use in drug delivery, 3D cell culture and tissue engineering applications. Various chemical approaches have been developed for hydrogel synthesis using monomers or polymers carrying reactive functional groups. For in vivo tissue repair and in vitro cell culture purposes, it is desirable that the crosslinking reactions occur under mild conditions, do not interfere with biological processes and proceed at high yield with exceptional selectivity. Additionally, the cross-linking reaction should allow straightforward incorporation of bioactive motifs or signaling molecules, at the same time, providing tunability of the hydrogel microstructure, mechanical properties, and degradation rates. In this review, we discuss various chemical approaches applied to the synthesis of complex hydrogel networks, highlighting recent developments from our group. The discovery of new chemistries and novel materials fabrication methods will lead to the development of the next generation biomimetic hydrogels with complex structures and diverse functionalities. These materials will likely facilitate the construction of engineered tissue models that may bridge the gap between 2D experiments and animal studies, providing preliminary insight prior to in vivo assessments.

Abstract
Performing rhinoplasty using filler injections, which improve facial wrinkles or soft tissues, is relatively inexpensive. However, intravascular filler injections can cause severe complications, such as skin necrosis and visual loss. We describe a case of blepharoptosis and skin necrosis caused by augmentation rhinoplasty and we discuss the patient's clinical progress. We describe the case of a 25-year-old female patient who experienced severe pain, blepharoptosis, and decreased visual acuity immediately after receiving a filler injection. Our case suggests that surgeons should be aware of nasal vascularity before performing an operation, and that they should avoid injecting fillers at a high pressure and/or in excessive amounts. Additionally, filler injections should be stopped if the patient complains of severe pain, and appropriate measures should be taken to prevent complications caused by intravascular filler injections.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Wound healing after endoscopic sinus surgery may result in adhesion formation. Hyaluronic acid may prevent synechiae development. A systematic review was performed to evaluate the current evidence on the clinical efficacy of hyaluronic acid applied to the nasal cavity after sinus surgery. METHODS Studies using hyaluronic acid as an adjunct treatment following endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis were identified. The primary outcome was adhesion formation rates. A meta-analysis was performed on adhesion event frequency. Secondary outcome measures included other endoscopic findings and patient-reported outcomes. RESULTS Thirteen studies (501 patients) met the selection criteria. A meta-analysis of adhesion formation frequency on endoscopy demonstrated a lower risk ratio in the hyaluronic acid intervention group (42 out of 283 cases) compared to the control group (81 out of 282) of 0.52 (95 per cent confidence interval = 0.37-0.72). Hyaluronic acid use was not associated with any significant adverse events. CONCLUSION Hyaluronic acid appears to be clinically safe and well tolerated, and may be useful in the early stages after sinus surgery to limit adhesion rate. Further research, including larger randomised controlled trials, is required to evaluate patient- and clinician-reported outcomes of hyaluronic acid post sinus surgery.

Abstract
Living in biofilms is probably the most common condition for bacteria and fungi and biofilm-related infections account for the majority of bacterial infectious diseases worldwide. Among others biofilm-related infections, those associated with implanted biomaterials have an enormous and still largely underestimated impact in orthopaedics and trauma, cardio-surgery and several other surgical disciplines. Given the limited efficacy of existing antibiotics in the prevention and treatment of bacterial biofilms, new strategies are needed to protect implants and host tissues, overcoming the striking ability of the microorganisms to adhere on different surfaces and to immediately protect themselves by forming the biofilm matrix. Adhesion is a necessary first step in microbial colonization and pathogenesis and provides a potential target for new preventive and treatment approach. Among various polymers, tested as antibacterial coatings, hyaluronic acid and some of its composites do offer a well-established long-term safety profile and a proven ability to reduce bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. Aim of the present review is to summarize the available evidence concerning the antiadhesion/antibiofilm activity of hyaluronic acid and some of its derivatives to reduce/prevent bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation in various experimental and clinical settings.

Abstract
We evaluated and compared the effectiveness of intra-articular injection of hip joint using hyaluronic acid and steroid in patients with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). Thirty patients with FAI clinically and radiologically were enrolled and underwent hip injection using steroid (TA) or hyaluronic acid (HA) at 0-weeks with cross-over injection at 2-weeks in patients without clinical response of decrease of pain intensity less than 2-point. Patients were followed up to 12-weeks for pain intensity (Numeric rating scale, NRS: 0-10), hip disability score (HOOS), oral medication and adverse events. In 17 patients without cross-over, HOOS at 2-weeks was improved significantly in patients with HA injection (mean increase of HOOS = 13.8 with HA vs. -2.2 with TA, P = 0.031) without difference of NRS (P = 0.943). In 13 patients with cross-over, NRS was significantly improved at 2-weeks with first TA injection (mean decrease of NRS= 1.7 with first TA vs. 0.3 with first HA, P = 0.036), without difference of HOOS (P = 0.431). At 4-weeks, NRS and HOOS were significantly different according to injection drugs (NRS: 0.9 with TA first and HA later vs. 2.7 with HA first and TA later, P = 0.001; mean increase of HOOS: 5.3 with TA first and HA later vs. 10.2 with HA first and TA later, P = 0.032). Intra-articular hip injection may be effective in FAI, with faster effect of pain improvement by TA and more delayed effect of function improvement by HA.

Abstract
Background Hydrogels that possess hydrophilic and soft characteristics have been widely used in various biomedical applications, such as tissue engineering scaffolds and drug delivery. Conventional hydrogels are not electrically conductive and thus their electrical communication with biological systems is limited. Method To create electrically conductive hydrogels, we fabricated composite hydrogels of hyaluronic acid and polypyrrole. In particular, we synthesized and used pyrrole-hyaluronic acid-conjugates and further chemically polymerized polypyrrole with the conjugates for the production of conductive hydrogels that can display suitable mechanical and structural properties. Results Various characterization methods, using a rheometer, a scanning electron microscope, and an electrochemical analyzer, revealed that the PPy/HA hydrogels were soft and conductive with ~ 3 kPa Young’s modulus and ~ 7.3 mS/cm conductivity. Our preliminary in vitro culture studies showed that fibroblasts were well attached and grew on the conductive hydrogels. Conclusion These new conductive hydrogels will be greatly beneficial in fields of biomaterials in which electrical properties are important such as tissue engineering scaffolds and prosthetic devices.

Abstract
Objective In 2014, enrolled 20 patients who applied to the Unit of Assisted Reproduction
Techniques, Konya Necmettin Erbakan University. Based on the presence of hyaluronic
acid (HA) in the oocyte-cumulus cell complex, sperm attached to HA in vivo were modeled in vitro. Available healthy sperm obtained in the swim-up procedure using HA were
investigated.
Materials and Methods This observational cohort study, a routine analysis was conducted on the ejaculation samples obtained from 20 patients. We divided each sample
into two groups and the swim-up method was applied. Human serum albumin (HSA, 0.5%)
was added to samples from the first group. HA (10%) was added to samples from the second group. We determined the floating linear and non-linear sperm concentrations of both
groups annexin V was used to determine the rate of apoptosis of these sperm.
Results Following swim-up, linear and non-linear sperm concentrations were higher in
the group that contained HA compared to the group with HSA. However, there was a significantly higher apoptosis rate in the HSA group compared to the HA group.
Conclusion The addition of HA to the medium in the swim-up procedure positively affected sperm parameters. Thus, healthier sperm cells were obtained without DNA damage
and with high motility.

Abstract
Introduction Hyaluronic acid has been shown to be efficacious in decreasing scar formation, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Aim To assess the efficacy of intralesional injection of hyaluronic acid in patients affected by Peyronie's disease. Methods In this prospective, single-arm, self-controlled, interventional, multicenter pilot study, 65 patients underwent a 10-week cycle of weekly intraplaque injections with hyaluronic acid (0.8% highly purified sodium salt hyaluronic acid 16 mg/2 mL; Sinovial, IBSA, Lodi, Italy). Patients were re-evaluated 2 months after the end of therapy. Main Outcome Measures Plaque size (millimeters), penile curvature (degrees), International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) score, visual analog scale (VAS) score for sexual satisfaction, and Patient's Global Impressions of Improvement (PGI-I) score. Results Median age was 57 years (range = 23–70). At baseline, mean plaque size was 10 mm (range = 3–30 mm), mean penile curvature was 30° (range = 0°–50°), and mean IIEF-5 score was 20 (range = 0–25), with slight to moderate erectile dysfunction (IIEF score < 21) in 36 of 65 patients (55%). A median VAS score of 6 (range = 2–10) was found. Mean follow-up was 12 months (range = 6–24 months). Statistically significant post-treatment improvements were detected for plaque size (before treatment = 10 mm [3–30 mm], after treatment = 8 mm [1–30 mm], P < .0001), penile curvature (before treatment = 30° [0°–50°], after treatment = 20° [0°–40°], P < .0001), IIEF-5 score (before treatment = 20 [11–25], after treatment = 21 [15–25], P < .0001), and VAS score (before treatment = 6 [2–10], after treatment 8 [2–10], P < .0001). After treatment, the rate of patients with an IIEF score lower than 21 decreased from 55% (36 patients) to 40% (25 patients). Overall improvement on the PGI-I questionnaire was 69%. Conclusion Intralesional treatment with hyaluronic acid can improve plaque size, penile curvature, and overall sexual satisfaction and seems preferably indicated in the early (active) phase of the disease. Furthermore, it is easy to perform and well tolerated.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Vocal fold scarring is one of the most challenging laryngeal disorders to treat and there are currently no consistently effective treatments available. Our previous studies have shown the therapeutic potential of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) for vocal fold scarring. However, the histological effects of bFGF on scarred vocal fold have not been elucidated. The aim of this study was to examine the histological effects of bFGF on chronic vocal fold scarring. METHODS Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into phosphate buffered saline (sham) and bFGF groups. Unilateral vocal fold stripping was performed and the drug was injected into the scarred vocal fold for each group 2 months postoperatively. Injections were performed weekly for 4 weeks. Two months after the last injection, larynges were harvested and histologically analyzed. RESULTS A significant increase of hyaluronic acid was observed in the vocal fold of the bFGF group compared with that of the sham group. However, there was no remarkable change in collagen expression nor in vocal fold contraction. CONCLUSION Significant increase of hyaluronic acid by local bFGF injection was thought to contribute to the therapeutic effects on chronic vocal fold scarring.
