Abstract
Vitamin K is a multi-function vitamin that has emerging roles in bone, brain and vascular health. Vitamin K composition data remain limited globally and Australia has lacked nationally representative data for vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) in horticultural commodities. Primary samples (n = 927) of 90 Australian-grown fruit, vegetable and nut commodities were purchased in three Australian cities. We measured vitamin K1/phylloquinone in duplicate in 95 composite samples using liquid chromatography with electrospray ionisation-tandem mass spectrometry. The greatest mean concentrations of vitamin K1/phylloquinone were found in kale (565 μg/100 g), baby spinach (255 μg/100 g) and Brussels sprouts (195 μg/100 g). The data contribute to the global collection of vitamin K food composition data. They add to the evidence that vitamin K1/phylloquinone concentrations vary markedly between geographic regions, supporting development of region-specific datasets for national food composition databases that do not yet contain data for vitamin K. Such data are needed globally.

Abstract
The nutritional benefits and immunological advantages of consuming nuts and seeds are well-established. However, the link between nuts and seeds consumption and the susceptibility of being overweight or obese among adolescents is not clear. This study aims to explore this relationship in adolescents aged 12-19. Using a weighted multiple logistic regression model, we analysed data of the Food Patterns Equivalents Database and the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2003 to 2018. We found a significant association between nuts and seeds consumption and a reduced odds of being overweight or obese in females. Specifically, females who habitually consumed nuts and seeds had lower odds of being overweight or obese (OR = 0.55, 95% CI: 0.32-0.94). Additionally, we found an L-shaped relationship between nuts and seeds consumption and appropriate waist-to-height ratio in males. The findings suggest that nuts and seeds consumption may contribute to healthier physical development in adolescents.

Abstract
The Cyperaceae fruit consistency depends on the mesocarp. Seed structure is diverse and related to the evolutionary history of their species. A new storage tissue is described for Cyperaceae. Anatomy and histochemistry of Cyperaceae fruits (including seeds) are poorly known due to their hard, isolating tissues that prevent anatomical techniques. We performed the first, most comprehensive structural diversity characterisation of fruit and seed in Cyperaceae, accompanied by an unprecedented histochemical characterisation of seeds for this family. We analysed fruits of 29 species, included in 19 genera and 12 tribes within the subfamilies Cyperoideae and Mapanioideae, using light microscopy. Cyperaceae fruits have a pericarp with a one-cell-layered exocarp and endocarp, and a multi-cell-layered mesocarp. The mesocarp of the Mapanioideae has a spongy-fleshy outer region and a hard inner region. The mesocarp of the Cyperoideae has only a hard region. The pericarp is free from the seed coat. Cyperaceae seeds have a three-layered seed coat, an embryo with haustorial function of its scutellum, and two storage tissues: the endosperm and a putative perisperm. Nine seed morphotypes and four seed subtypes were observed among the studied species. Our results suggested that the fruit consistency is determined by the mesocarp. Both the terms "nut" and "achene" should be accepted to refer to the dry fruit of the Cyperaceae until a widely accepted fruit classification for angiosperms is proposed. The Cyperaceae seed structural diversity is high and related to the evolutionary history of the species. The "perisperm" is a new tissue proposed for sedge seeds, and is here characterized for the first time. The seed coat has a different structure than the one described so far for the family.

Abstract
Wastes and by-products of nuts, seeds, cereals and legumes carry a unique potential for valorization into value-added ingredients due to their protein, dietary fiber, antioxidant, vitamin and mineral contents. The most crucial factor in the recovery of value-added ingredients and bioactives from the wastes and by-products is the utilization of the most efficient extraction technique. This work is an overview of the classification of wastes and by-products of nuts, seeds, cereals and legumes processing, the methods used in the extraction of valuable compounds such as proteins, dietary fibers, phenolics, flavonoids and other bioactives. This chapter provides insights on the promising applications of extracted ingredients in various end products. A special emphasis is given to the challenges and improvement methods for extraction of value-added compounds from wastes and by-products of nuts, seeds, cereals and legumes processing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have assessed the effects of nut consumption on blood lipid profile. The aim of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis to quantitatively estimate the effects of nut consumption on blood lipid profile. METHODS AND RESULTS The PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases were systematically searched to identify RCTs examining the effects of nut intake on blood total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglycerides (TGs) from inception until March 2021. A random-effects model was used to pool standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Potential publication bias was assessed using Begg's test and Egger's test. Sensitivity analysis was performed to assess the impact of each individual study on the pooled results. The meta-analysis showed that nut consumption had no significant effect on the blood lipid profile. However, there was a significant reduction in TC (SMD: -2.89, 95% CI: -4.80, -0.98, I2 = 97.4) for pistachio consumption, and cashew consumption significantly increased HDL-C (SMD: 0.24, 95% CI: 0.04, 0.43, I2 = 0.0) compared with that in controls. There was no significant publication bias in the meta-analysis. The sensitivity analysis showed that removing one study at a time did not change the significance of the results. CONCLUSION There was no overall effect of nut consumption on lipid profile, and the results may vary depending on nut type. We found that pistachio consumption may reduce TC levels, while cashew consumption increases HDL-C. REGISTRY NUMBER PROSPERO CRD42021249147.

Abstract
PURPOSE Maintaining optimal blood pressure (BP) levels can be an effective preventive strategy for reducing disease burden. Nut consumption may play a preventive role against hypertension, which is a lifelong condition. We aimed to prospectively examine the association between cumulative average nut consumption and the incidence of hypertension in Korean adults aged 40 years and older. METHODS A total of 10,347 participants who were free of hypertension at baseline, were included. Hypertension was defined as having a physician diagnosis and taking antihypertensive medications or having abnormal BP (systolic ≥ 140 mmHg or diastolic ≥ 90 mmHg). As an exposure, cumulative average nut consumption was calculated using repeated food-frequency questionnaires (mean: 2.1). We used a modified Poisson regression model with a robust error estimator to estimate the incidence rate ratios (IRRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for hypertension. RESULTS We identified 2047 incident cases of hypertension during 44,614 person-years of follow-up. Among both men and women, an average nut consumption of ≥ 1 serving/week (15 g/week]) was inversely associated with hypertension incidence (IRR = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.58-0.96, p for trend = 0.013 for men; IRR = 0.72, 95% CI = 0.59-0.88, p for trend = 0.002 for women) and these significant associations were consistently observed across the strata of potential confounders. CONCLUSION An average consumption of at least one serving (15 g) per week of peanuts, almonds, and/or pine nuts may be inversely associated with the risk of hypertension among Korean adults aged 40 years and older, in a dose-response manner.

Abstract
Chocolates paired with nuts are highly marketed products, however, there is a lack of scientific research and limited understanding of consumer sentiment towards the combination of these food products. The main objective of this research was to determine the consumers' response towards pairing five different chocolates (dark origin, milk, Gold, white fruity, and white vanilla) and three different nuts (hazelnut, almond, and pistachio) for the creation of pairing guidelines within Barry Callebaut's range. TimeSens© software was applied to assess the dynamic interaction of flavors through temporal dominance of sensations (TDS). It was observed that each type of chocolate presents different interactions of dominant flavors depending on the nut and its applications. Furthermore, variables such as liking, balance, and check-all-that-apply (CATA) were analyzed to create pairing guidelines related to different responses on the predominant flavor of each of the chocolates. These case studies determined that the liking of the different pairs was influenced by the dominant flavors of each of the chocolates and the balance found in the match. From the predominant flavors, it was concluded that respondents preferred chocolates with sweet and dairy attributes such as: milky, creamy, buttery. Salty and vanilla flavors also made good pairs as they accentuate the nut flavor. On the contrary, chocolates with intense bitter, roasted, cocoa, and sour flavors did not create the best combinations with the nuts, as these are contrasting or strong flavors that consumers are usually unfamiliar with when combined with nuts. To complement this study, further analysis can be developed using other types of chocolates, nuts, and applications, and then comparing the dominant flavors of the chocolates with distinctive nuts to assess the consumers' response towards the combinations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Studies have reported that nuts intake is potentially beneficial to cardiometabolic health. However, there have been heterogeneous results regarding the association between nut intake/consumption and the risk of diabetes mellitus (DM). Insulin resistance (IR) is a major pathophysiology of DM. Thus, this study was to assess the association between nuts consumption and IR. DESIGN A retrospective cross-sectional study. SETTING Multivariable-adjusted OR and 95 % CI for increased IR (adjusted OR (95 % CI)) were calculated according to the frequency of consuming one serving dose (15 g) of nuts including peanut, pine nut and almond (< 1/month, 1/month-1/week, 1-3/week, 3-5/week, ≥ 5/week). Elevated IR was defined in homoeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance corresponding to the fourth quartile levels within each study group. Subgroup analysis was conducted for gender, glycaemic status (normal, prediabetes and DM) and age (≥ and < 40 years). PARTICIPANTS 379 310 Koreans who received health check-up. RESULTS Compared with nut consumption < 1/month (reference), nuts consumption ≥ 1/month had the lower OR and 95 % CI for elevated IR (1/month-1/week: 0·90 (95 % CI 0·89, 0·92), 1-3/week: 0·90 (95 % CI 0·87, 0·92), 3-5/week: 0·94 (95 % CI 0·89, 0·98) and ≥ 5/week: 0·90 (95 % CI 0·86, 0·94)). This association was more remarkable in women, normal glycaemic group and young age group (< 40 years). However, men, prediabetes, DM and old age group did not show the significant association. CONCLUSION Nuts consumption ≥ 1/month was less associated with elevated IR. Increased nuts consumption may have a favourable effect on IR.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The relationship between dietary nut intake and hyperuricemia risk remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between different nut intake and hyperuricemia risk with a cross-sectional study. DESIGN A semi-quantitative FFQ was adopted to collect dietary information. Biochemical and anthropometric parameters were measured by standard methods. Multivariate-adjusted logistic regression models were implemented to analyse the relationship between individual nut intake and hyperuricemia risk. SETTING Qingdao University in Shandong Province, China. PARTICIPANTS During 2018-2019, a total of 14 056 undergraduates (6862 males and 7194 females) aged 15-25 years participated in the study. RESULTS After adjusting for multiple confounding factors, compared with the lowest quartile, the highest quartile intakes of pine nut (95 % CI (0·51, 0·98)) was significantly associated with 29 % reduction in hyperuricemia risk, the highest quartile intake of walnut (OR = 0·78; 95 % CI (0·58, 1·05)) was marginally negatively associated with hyperuricemia risk. CONCLUSIONS The present study showed that the relationships between intakes of different nuts and hyperuricemia risk were different. Increased dietary intakes of walnut and pine nut are negatively associated with the hyperuricemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pediatric airway foreign bodies (FBs) are a surgical emergency, and peanuts and tree nuts (PN/TNs) can pose a significant aspiration risk in young children. In 2015, the Learning Early About Peanut allergy (LEAP) trial established that early introduction of peanuts in high-risk infants reduced the risk of developing a peanut allergy. Infant feeding guidelines were subsequently modified to actively encourage the introduction of allergenic foods for all infants. The impact of this shift in feeding advice on the incidence of PN/TN inhalation has not been previously studied. OBJECTIVE To determine the incidence of PN/TN inhalation presentations to a quaternary pediatric hospital between 2008 and 2018. METHODS A retrospective cohort study of children who were diagnosed with an airway FB by rigid bronchoscopy. RESULTS There were 200 cases of FB inhalation (35% PN/TN, 34% other foods, and 31% inorganic material). There was a rise in the total incidence of FB inhalation over the study period (incidence ratio rate [IRR], 1.09; P < .001). The rise was due to PN/TN (IRR, 1.16; P < .002) and other food inhalation (IRR, 1.12; P = .01), with no significant increase in inorganic FB aspiration (IRR, 1; P = .94). Between pre-LEAP (2008-2014) and post-LEAP (2015-2018) periods, there was a trebling, doubling, and no increase in the rate of PN/TN, other food, and inorganic FB inhalation, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Since the publication of the LEAP study, there has been a rise in PN/TN and other hard solid food inhalation at our institution. This study highlights the urgent need to engage the public to promote safe introduction of hard foods in young children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Given the high prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among older adults, especially in men compared to women, the aim of this study was to examine nut and legume consumption in relation to Framingham risk score (FRS) and cardiovascular risk factors in older adult men. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, we recruited 267 men aged 60-74 years old. Diet was measured using a validated and reliable food frequency questionnaire. We used FRS to predict a 10-year chance of developing CVD among participants. RESULTS Nut consumption was inversely associated with serum levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (Odds ratio (OR): 0.36, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.17, 0.59; P < 0.001) and directly associated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) level (OR: 2.24, 95% CI: 1.18, 3.89; P = 0.001). In addition, higher intake of legumes was associated with lower serum levels of LDL-C (OR: 0.28, 95% CI: 0.15, 0.49; P < 0.001) and higher serum levels of HDL-C (OR: 2.14, 95% CI: 1.20, 3.72; P = 0.005). However, no associations were observed between nuts and legumes on FRS and other CVD risk factors. CONCLUSIONS Overall, nut and legume consumption was associated with higher serum levels of HDL-C and lower serum levels of LDL-C. Future studies are required to elucidate the association between nut and legume consumption and CVD risk factors to characterize gender differences.

Abstract
Consumption of nuts and legumes has been associated with several health benefits. The aim of this study was to systematically review existing meta-analyses of observational studies on nut and legume intake and non-communicable diseases, and assess the level of evidence. Out of the six meta-analyses focussed on legume and 15 on nut intake, a possible association with decreased risk of colorectal adenoma and coronary heart disease was found for higher legume consumption, and a decreased risk of cardiovascular and cancer mortality, colon cancer, hypertension and ischaemic stroke for higher nut consumption. The association between legume consumption and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), as well as nut consumption and risk of cancer, CVD incidence and all-cause mortality, was deemed as "limited" due to heterogeneity between results and/or potential confounding factors. General benefit towards better health can be observed for nut and legume consumption. Further studies are needed to better elucidate potential confounding factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Studies have reported that nut consumption is potentially beneficial in preventing cardiovascular disease. However, data are insufficient regarding the association between nut consumption and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). METHODS AND RESULTS In the Kangbuk Samsung Health Study, the participants were 34,617 men and 12,257 women who completed a food-frequency questionnaire for nut consumption and received echocardiography. Nut consumption was evaluated only for peanuts, pine nuts, and almonds defining 15 g as one serving/servings dose. Multivariable adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for LVH were evaluated according to the consumption frequency of one serving dose of nut. The frequency of nut consumption was categorized into five groups (<1/month, 1/month-1/week, 1-2/week, 2-4/week, and ≥4/week). The subgroup analysis was conducted by dividing the participants into the following two groups: the nonhypertensive/nondiabetic group and hypertensive or diabetic group. In women, nut consumption ≥2/week had the lower multivariable adjusted OR and 95% CI for LVH (2-4/week: 0.46 [0.26-0.81] and ≥4/week: 0.48 [0.25-0.92]) when compared with nut consumption <1/month. This association was identically observed in the subgroup analysis for women without hypertension and diabetes mellitus (DM) and women with hypertension or DM. However, men did not show the significant association. CONCLUSION In women, nut consumption ≥2/week was associated with the decreased probability of LVH. Further research studies should investigate whether the beneficial effect of nut consumption on LV structure results in better cardiovascular prognosis.

Abstract
Background Breeding for new macadamia cultivars with high nut yield is expensive in terms of time, labour and cost. Most trees set nuts after four to five years, and candidate varieties for breeding are evaluated for at least eight years for various traits. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) are promising methods to reduce evaluation and selection cycles by identifying genetic markers linked with key traits, potentially enabling early selection through marker-assisted selection. This study used 295 progeny from 32 full-sib families and 29 parents (18 phenotyped) which were planted across four sites, with each tree genotyped for 4113 SNPs. ASReml-R was used to perform association analyses with linear mixed models including a genomic relationship matrix to account for population structure. Traits investigated were: nut weight (NW), kernel weight (KW), kernel recovery (KR), percentage of whole kernels (WK), tree trunk circumference (TC), percentage of racemes that survived from flowering through to nut set, and number of nuts per raceme. Results Seven SNPs were significantly associated with NW (at a genome-wide false discovery rate of < 0.05), and four with WK. Multiple regression, as well as mapping of markers to genome assembly scaffolds suggested that some SNPs were detecting the same QTL. There were 44 significant SNPs identified for TC although multiple regression suggested detection of 16 separate QTLs. Conclusions These findings have important implications for macadamia breeding, and highlight the difficulties of heterozygous populations with rapid LD decay. By coupling validated marker-trait associations detected through GWAS with MAS, genetic gain could be increased by reducing the selection time for economically important nut characteristics. Genomic selection may be a more appropriate method to predict complex traits like tree size and yield.

Abstract
The seed yield and healthy oil in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), as an important industrial crop, decrease under stress. There is not much investigation, to our knowledge, on the use of potassium fertilization, a regulator of plant water potential, affecting the biochemical properties and seed components of sunflower under drought stress. Accordingly, such parameters were investigated in a split-split plot field experiment, conducted in two different field sites (Natanz (Nt) and Eghlid (Eg), Iran), using potassium fertilization (subplots, 0, 150 and 300 kg/ha) and six drought levels (main plots) in four replicates. Although stress significantly affected sunflower biochemical properties and seed components in the two fields, the effects of stress were more pronounced in the Eg site (significant interaction of field and drought). The plant alleviated the stress by increasing the proline, oleic and linoleic acid concentrations, however, potassium fertilization also increased plant tolerance further under stress by enhancing such components compared with control. Interestingly, the Eg site was more responsive to the potassium fertilization (significant interaction of field and fertilization), as the fertilizer resulted in a higher rate of plant biochemical properties and seed components. The use of potassium fertilization at 300 kg/ha (K3) was the most effective treatment in the alleviation of stress. Interestingly, under drought stress, potassium contributed to the enhanced quantity and quality of sunflower by increasing seed components, and enhancing the biochemical properties of the plant, which can also improve crop physiological mechanisms. The results can further increase our understanding related to the effects of potassium fertilization on the yield and physiology of sunflower under drought stress. Such results are of economic, environmental and health significance.

Abstract
In this study, mineral nutrient and heavy metal (Al, Ca, Cd, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, and Zn) contents of the walnut kernels and their co-located soil samples collected from the four different zones of natural walnut forests (Sary-Chelek, Arslanbap, and Kara-Alma in Jalal-Abad Region and Kara-Shoro in Osh Region) in Kyrgyzstan were investigated. The highest concentrations for all elements determined in the soil samples were observed in the Sary-Chelek zone whereas the Arslanbap zone was found to be having the lowest concentrations except Fe and Zn. The highest concentrations in the kernels of walnut samples were found to be in the Sary-Chelek zone for Ca, Fe, K, Mg, and Zn; in the Kara-Shoro zone for Cu; in the Arslanbap zone for Mn; and in the Kara-Alma zone for Na whereas the lowest concentrations were found to be in the Arslanbap zone for Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Na, and Zn and in the Sary-Chelek zone for Cu and Mn, respectively. Also, the levels of Al, Cd, Ni, and Pb in kernel samples could not be detected by ICP-OES because their levels were lower than the threshold detection point (10 μg.kg-1). Additionally, our data indicated that the walnut kernels from Kyrgyzstan have higher values for RDA (recommended daily allowances) in comparison with the walnut kernels from other countries.

Abstract
Nuts contain a variety of nutrients and bioactive compounds that are capable of promoting metabolic health. However, due to their high energy density, concerns have been raised that nut consumption in the long term may contribute to weight gain. This systematic review summarizes the findings of prospective studies regarding the relationship between long-term nut consumption and obesity. Searches were conducted up through February 2018, using the PUBMED, EMBASE, and SCOPUS databases with the relevant MeSH terms and phrases. This systematic review included prospective cohort studies investigating the relationship between consumption of total nut and/or nut subtypes with changes in weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC), as well as the risk of overweight/obesity, with follow-up duration ≥1-year. Out of a total of 1580 papers that were initially examined, 6 met the inclusion criteria. Four out of the 6 studies showed an inverse association between nut consumption (typically at the dosages of ≥1 to 2 servings per week) and weight gain and risk of overweight/obesity. The remaining 2 studies evaluated the association between nut intake and changes in WC. From these 2 studies, only one study reported a significant inverse association. Overall, evidence from limited cohort studies demonstrated that long-term nut intake was associated with less weight gain and reduced risk of overweight/obesity. Whether such findings are generalizable to racially diverse ethnic groups, individuals of low socioeconomic status, and populations in developing countries should be addressed in future studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cashews, as the main source of monounsaturated (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated (PUFAs) fatty acids, are associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases. Despite evidence for beneficial effects of nuts on lipid profile and glycemic control, to the authors' best knowledge, little is known about cashews. METHODS An eight-week, randomized, isocaloric, controlled-feeding study was conducted on 50 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) randomly assigned to either the control or intervention group (10% of total calorie from cashews). Weight, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), serum insulin concentration and sensitivity, lipid profile ratio, high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) were measured at baseline and after eight weeks of intervention adjusted for age, gender, baseline values of FPG, insulin, HOMA-IR (homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance), fiber, and both baseline and post-intervention vitamin C levels as covariates. RESULTS Weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC) were not significantly different in the groups after eight weeks of intervention, as well as between the two groups, compared with the baseline measures. At the end of the study, serum insulin and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol-to-high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C/HDL-C) ratio significantly decreased in the cashews group compared with those of the controls (P = 0.01 and P = 0.04, respectively). Although, HOMA-IR decreased significantly in the cashews group (P = 0.03), changes were not significant compared with the baseline measures (P = 0.056). Despite more increase in PON-1 activity in the cashews group, the changes were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS Daily consumption of cashews reduced serum insulin and LDL-C/HDL-C ratio in patients with T2DM. However, further studies with larger sample sizes and more duration are needed to confirm the current study results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nut consumption is known to reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease. However, in previous studies, portion sizes and categories of nut consumption have varied, and few studies have assessed the association between colorectal cancer risk and nut consumption. In this study, we investigated the relationship between nut consumption and colorectal cancer risk. METHODS A case-control study was conducted among 923 colorectal cancer patients and 1846 controls recruited from the National Cancer Center in Korea. Information on dietary intake was collected using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire with 106 items, including peanuts, pine nuts, and almonds (as 1 food item). Nut consumption was categorized as none, < 1 serving per week, 1-3 servings per week, and ≥3 servings per week. A binary logistic regression model was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between nut consumption and colorectal cancer risk, and a polytomous logistic regression model was used for sub-site analyses. RESULTS High nut consumption was strongly associated with reduced risk of colorectal cancer among women (adjusted ORs: 0.30, 95%CI: 0.15-0.60 for the ≥3 servings per week group vs. none). A similar inverse association was observed for men (adjusted ORs: 0.28, 95% CI: 0.17-0.47). In sub-site analyses, adjusted ORs (95% CIs) comparing the ≥3 servings per week group vs none were 0.25 (0.09-0.70) for proximal colon cancer, 0.39 (0.19-0.80) for distal colon cancer, and 0.23 (0.12-0.46) for rectal cancer among men. An inverse association was also found among women for distal colon cancer (OR: 0.13, 95% CI: 0.04-0.48) and rectal cancer (OR: 0.40, 95% CI: 0.17-0.95). CONCLUSIONS We found a statistically significant association between high frequency of nut consumption and reduced risk of colorectal cancer. This association was observed for all sub-sites of the colon and rectum among both men and women, with the exception of proximal colon cancer for women.

Abstract
MAIN CONCLUSION Application of auxin to root stock and scion increases the success rate of grafting in Chinese hickory. The nuts of the Chinese hickory (Carya cathayensis) tree are considered both delicious and healthy. The popularity and high demand result is that the hickory nuts are of very high economical value for horticulture. This is particularly true for the Zhejiang province in eastern China where this tree is widely cultivated. However, there are several difficulties surrounding the hickory cultivation, such as for example long vegetative growth, tall trees, labour-intensive nut picking, and slow variety improvements. These complications form a great bottleneck in the expansion of the hickory industry. The development of an efficient grafting procedure could surpass at least some of these problems. In this study, we demonstrate that application of the auxin indole-3-acetic acid promotes the grafting process in hickory, whereas application of the auxin transport inhibitor 1-N-naphthylphthalamic acid inhibits the grafting process. Furthermore, we have identified hickory genes in the PIN, ABCB, and AUX/LAX-families known to encode influx and efflux carriers in the polar transport of auxin. We show that increased expression of several of these genes, such as CcPIN1b and CcLAX3, is correlating with successful grafting.

Abstract
The antioxidant and anti-adipogenic activities of the water extract (WE) and methanol extract (ME) of the shell and kernel of Castanopsis cuspidata var. thunbergii (CCT) nuts were evaluated. The shell extracts showed higher DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities (RSAs) than did the kernel extracts. Furthermore, the RSA of the ME was higher than that of the WE, regardless of the part. The total phenolic contents (TPCs) of the ME of the shell and kernel were 71.38 and 10.56 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/100 mg extract, respectively. The TPCs of the WE of the shell and kernel were 17.44 and 9.27 mg GAE/100 mg extract, respectively. The WE inhibited 3T3-L1 adipogenesis more effectively than did the ME, and the shell extracts suppressed 3T3-L1 adipogenesis more effectively than did the kernel extracts. These results suggest that CCT nut kernels (ME) and shells (WE) may be strategically used to enhance antioxidant or and anti-obesity materials.

Abstract
Twenty-nine pesticide residues in nut-planted soils from China were investigated. One organophosphate (chlorpyrifos) was detected in 5.3% soils, and the residue levels of 7.2 μg/kg to 77.2 μg/kg. The concentrations of six organochlorines (DDT, HCH, endosulfan, quintozene, aldrin and dieldrin) detected in 78.9% soils were 0.6 μg/kg to 90.1 μg/kg. The residue levels of six pyrethroids (bifenthrin, fenpropathrin, cyhalothrin, cypermethrin, fenvalerate and deltamethrin) detected in 65.8% soils were 1.5 μg/kg to 884.3 μg/kg. Triadimefon and buprofezin were found in 71.1% and 52.6% samples, respectively, with the corresponding concentrations of 9.8 μg/kg to 193.7 μg/kg and 87.9 μg/kg to 807.4 μg/kg. The multiple residues were found in 76.3% soils. A significant correlation between pesticide residues in nuts and soils was observed, with the correlation coefficient (r) 0.83 (P < 0.001). In addition, the bioconcentration factor (BCF) values for the explanation of pesticides from soils into nuts were ranged from 0.8 to 16.5. The results showed that some pesticides could accumulate in nut by the uptake effect from soil.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE nut consumption has consistently been found to be associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and mortality in prospective studies. However, its effect on endothelial function, a prognostic marker of CVD, is still controversial in clinical trials. This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) aimed to quantitatively assess the effect of nuts on vascular endothelial function. METHODS Major electronic databases were searched for published RCTs that reported the effect of nuts on flow mediated dilation (FMD) as a measurement of endothelial function in the adult population (age eighteen years or over). We calculated the pooled estimates of weighted mean differences (WMDs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) by using random-effects models. RESULTS A total of nine papers (10 trials) involving 374 participants were included. The pooled estimates found that nut consumption significantly improved FMD (WMD: 0.41%; 95% CI: 0.18%, 0.63%; P = 0.001). Moderate and marginally significant heterogeneity was observed among the studies (I2 = 39.5%, P = 0.094). Subgroup analyses indicated that walnuts significantly improved FMD (WMD: 0.39%; 95% CI: 0.16%, 0.63%; P = 0.001). In addition, nut consumption had a significant effect on FMD in the trials with study duration <18 weeks, nut dose <67 g/d, or subjects with baseline FMD ≥8.6%. CONCLUSIONS Nut consumption significantly improved endothelial function. However, the beneficial effect was limited to walnuts. More studies examining the effect of other nuts on endothelial function are needed in the future.

Abstract
The pesticide residue levels of three nuts (chestnut, walnut, pinenut) collected from seven main producing areas of China were investigated. Twenty-nine pesticides, including organophosphates (OPs), organochlorines (OCs), pyrethroids (PYs) and two fungicides (triadimefon and buprofezin) were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC). Four OPs (acephate, dimethoate, chlorpyrifos and parathion-methyl) were found in 11.4% samples, with the concentrations of 19.0 µg kg(-1) to 74.0 µg kg(-1). Six OCs (DDT, HCH, endosulfan, quintozene, aldrin and dieldrin) were found in 18.2% samples, with the concentrations of 2.0 µg kg(-1) to 65.7 µg kg(-1). Among OCs, p,p-DDE and α-HCH were the dominant isomer for DDT and HCH. Five PYs (fenpropathrin, fenvalerate, cypermethrin, bifenthrin and cyhalothrin) were found in 15.9% samples, with the concentrations of 2.5 µg kg(-1) to 433.0 µg kg(-1). Fenpropathrin was the most frequently detected pesticide. In addition, triadimefon and buprofezin were detected only in two samples. For the tested nuts, 25.0% samples with multiple residues (containing more than two pesticides) were noted, even up to 9.1% samples with five pesticide residues. The residue of 15.9% samples was higher than the maximum residue limits (MRLs) of China. The short-term risks for the tested nuts were below 1.2%, and the highest long-term risk was 12.58%. The cumulative risk (cHI) for the tested pesticides were 8.43% (OPs), 0.42% (OCs), 12.82% (PYs) and 0.15% (fungicides), respectively. The total cHI was 21.82%. There was no significant health risk for consumers via nuts consumption.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM The relationships between dietary nuts and legume intake and risk of stroke are inconsistent. We summarized the evidence by a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies. METHODS AND RESULTS We systematically searched the MEDLINE and EMBASE databases up to 31 January 2014. Random-effects models were used to calculate summary relative risks (SRRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Between-study heterogeneity was assessed using the Cochran's Q and I(2) statistics. Eight prospective studies with a total of 468,887 subjects and 10,493 stroke events were included in the meta-analysis. Overall, a diet containing greater amounts of legumes may be not associated with a lower risk of stroke (SRR = 0.95, 95% CI: 0.84-1.08; P(heterogeneity) = 0.091, I(2) = 43.2%); however, a diet containing greater amounts of nuts may be associated with a lower risk of stroke (SRR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.81-0.99; P(heterogeneity) = 0.527, I(2) = 0). Gender significantly modified the effects of nut consumption on stroke risk, and high nut intake was associated with reduced risk of stroke in women (SRR = 0.85, 95% CI: 0.75-0.97) other than in men (SRR = 0.95, 95% CI: 0.82-1.11). CONCLUSION The current meta-analysis provides some evidences for the hypothesis that high intake of dietary nut was inversely associated with stroke risk, whereas dietary legumes intake was not associated with stroke risk.

Abstract
During the last few years the popularity for the plant based butters (nut and seed butters) has increased considerably. Earlier peanut butter was the only alternative to the dairy butter, but over the years development in the technologies and also the consumer awareness about the plant based butters, has led the development of myriad varieties of butters with different nuts and seeds, which are very good source of protein, fiber, essential fatty acids and other nutrients. These days' different varieties of plant based butters are available in the market viz., peanut butter, soy butter, almond butter, pistachio butter, cashew butter and sesame butter etc. The form of butter is one of the healthy way of integrating nuts and seeds in to our regular diet. Nut and seed butters are generally prepared by roasting, grinding and refrigerated to consume it when it is still fresh. During this process it is imperative to retain the nutritional properties of these nuts and seeds in order to reap the benefits of the fresh nuts and seeds in the form of butter as well. Proper care is needed to minimize the conversion of healthful components in to unhealthy components during processing and further storage. Roasting temperature, temperatures during grinding and storage are the vital factors to be considered in order to have healthy and nutritious plant based butters. In this article, different plant based butters and their processing methods have been described.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Few studies outside of Western countries have evaluated the relationship between consumption of nuts and blood pressure (BP). This study aimed to investigate the relationship between nut consumption and blood pressure in an Iranian adult population. METHODS AND RESULTS We performed a cross-sectional investigation among 9660 randomly selected Iranian adults, sampled to represent three large Iranian regions, using data collected in the Isfahan Healthy Heart Program in 2007. The frequency of nut consumption was assessed by a food frequency questionnaire. Systolic and diastolic BPs (SBP and DBP) were measured in duplicate by trained personnel using a standard protocol. Multiple linear and logistic regressions were applied to assess the relationship between nut intake and BP levels and the presence of hypertension as SBP ≥ 140 mmHg, and/or a DBP ≥ 90 mmHg and/or current use of at least one type of anti-hypertensive medication. Those with nut consumption ≥4 times/week showed less mean of BPs and hypertension prevalence, compared to those who consumed nuts <1 times/week (p < 0.001). Compared to no consumption, consuming nuts ≥4 times/week was associated with a 34% lower prevalence of hypertension (multivariate odds ratio (OR) = 0.66; confidence interval (CI) = 0.51-0.87; p for trend = 0.009). CONCLUSIONS More frequent nut consumption is associated with lower BP and lower risk of hypertension among Iranian adults.

Abstract
Eleven types of nuts and seeds were analyzed to determine their energy (326-733 mg), moisture (1.6-18.3 mg), carbohydrate (8.8-70.9 mg), protein (4.9-30.5 mg), lipid (2.5-69.8 mg), and ash (1.2-5.5 mg) contents per 100 g of sample. Energy content was highest in pine nuts (733 mg/100 g), carbohydrate level was highest in dried figs (70.9 mg/100 g) and protein was highest in peanuts (30.5 mg/100 g). The amino acid compositions of nuts and seeds were characterized by the dominance of hydrophobic (range = 1,348.6-10,284.6 mg), hydrophilic (range = 341.1-3,244.3 mg), acidic (range = 956.1-8,426.5 mg), and basic (range = 408.6-4,738.5 mg) amino acids. Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) were highest in macadamia nuts (81.3%), whereas polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were highest in the walnuts (76.7%). Macadamia nuts did not contain any vitamin E, whereas sunflower seeds contained the highest level (60.3 mg/kg). Iron (Fe) content was highest in pumpkin seeds (95.85 ± 33.01 ppm), zinc (Zn) content was highest in pistachios (67.24 ± 30.25 ppm), copper (Cu) content was greatest in walnuts (25.45 ± 21.51 ppm), and lead (Pb) content was greatest in wheat nuts (25.49 ± 4.64 ppm), significantly (P < 0.05). In conclusion, current commercial nuts and seeds have no safety concerns, although further analysis of Pb contents is necessary to ensure safety.
