Pickering emulsion biocatalysis: Bridging interfacial design with enzymatic reactions

Non-homogeneous enzyme-catalyzed systems are more widely used than homogeneous systems. Distinguished from the conventional biphasic approach, Pickering emulsion stabilized by ultrafine solid particles opens up an innovative platform for biocatalysis. Their vast specific surface area significantly enhances enzyme-substrate interactions, dramatically increasing catalytic efficiency. This review comprehensively explores various aspects of Pickering emulsion biocatalysis, provides insights into the multiple types and mechanisms of its catalysis, and offers strategies for material design, enzyme immobilization, emulsion formation control, and reactor design. Characterization methods are summarized for the determination of drop size, emulsion type, interface morphology, and emulsion potential. Furthermore, recent reports on the design of stimuli-responsive reaction systems are reviewed, enabling the simple control of demulsification. Moreover, the review explores applications of Pickering emulsion in single-step, cascade, and continuous flow reactions and outlines the challenges and future directions for the field. Overall, we provide a review focusing on Pickering emulsions catalysis, which can draw the attention of researchers in the field of catalytic system design, further empowering next-generation bioprocessing.

Scaling up of dual-chamber microbial electrochemical systems - An appraisal using systems design approach

Impetus to minimise the energy and carbon footprints of evolving wastewater resource recovery facilities has promoted the development of microbial electrochemical systems (MES) as an emerging energy-neutral and sustainable platform technology. Using separators in dual-chamber MES to isolate anodic and cathodic environments creates endless opportunities for its myriad applications. Nevertheless, the high internal resistance and the complex interdependencies among various system factors have challenged its scale-up. This critical review employed a systems approach to examine the complex interdependencies and practical issues surrounding the implementation and scalability of dual-chamber MES, where the anodic and cathodic reactions are mutually appraised to improve the overall system efficiency. The robustness and stability of anodic biofilms in large-volume MES is dependent on its inoculum source, antecedent history and enrichment strategies. The composition and anode-respiring activity of these biofilms are modulated by the anolyte composition, while their performance demands a delicate balance between the electrode size, macrostructure and the availability of substrates, buffers and nutrients when using real wastewater as anolyte. Additionally, the catholyte governed the reduction environment and associated energy consumption of MES with scalable electrocatalysts needed to enhance the sluggish reaction kinetics for energy-efficient resource recovery. A comprehensive assessment of the dual-chamber reactor configuration revealed that the tubular, spiral-wound, or plug-in modular MES configurations are suitable for pilot-scale, where it could be designed more effectively using efficient electrode macrostructure, suitable membranes and bespoke strategies for continuous operation to maximise their performance. It is anticipated that the critical and analytical understanding gained through this review will support the continuous development and scaling-up of dual-chamber MES for prospective energy-neutral treatment of wastewater and simultaneous circular management of highly relevant environmental resources.

Advanced treatment of industrial wastewater by ozonation with iron-based monolithic catalyst packing: From mechanism to application

An Fe-based catalyst was prepared by oxidising waste Fe shavings directly in a solution. In engineering applications, Fe shavings were compressed and modified to form Fe-based monolithic catalyst packing. Both of which exhibited excellent catalytic activity in catalytic ozonation industrial wastewater after biochemical treatment. Fe-based monolithic catalyst packing has irregular channels, large porosity, small pore diameter, and the effective specific surface area (SSA) up to 3500 m²/m³, these characteristics are conducive to mass transfer, and promote the effective utilisation of •OH in the catalyst "action zone". A tower reactor (<3000 m³/d) and reinforced concrete construction reactor (>5000 m³/d) were designed according to the wastewater flow. Regression analysis showed that hydraulic residence time (HRT) and O₃/COD_in are important parameters in engineering design and operation. In addition, strategies for the application of Fe-based monolithic catalyst packing to wastewater with high salinity and high inorganic carbon concentration have been proposed. Fe-based monolithic catalyst packing catalytic ozonation is a relatively cost-effective and eco-friendly process with extremely broad application prospects in the advanced treatment of industrial wastewater.

A comparison of reactor configuration using a fruit waste fed two-stage anaerobic up-flow leachate reactor microbial fuel cell and a single-stage microbial fuel cell

Food waste generation and its consequent environmental impacts are increasing due to rapid urbanization, the global population, and associated food demand. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a sustainable technology through which this food waste can be treated and used to produce bioelectricity. This study used two MFC configurations, a two-stage anaerobic up-flow leachate reactor MFC and a single-stage MFC, comparing the potential to treat solid fruit waste and fruit waste leachate. The two-stage MFC showed a higher potential to remove substrate at a shorter time compared to single-stage MFC. In 30 days, the two-stage anaerobic up-flow leachate reactor had a power density of 221 mW/m². It was able to remove more total solids (by 95 %), volatile solids (by 70 %), total chemical oxygen demand (by 83 %), soluble chemical oxygen demand (by 87 %), and carbohydrates (by 33 %) compared to the single-stage MFC. However, the single-stage MFC showed higher coulombic efficiency (by 86.7 %) compared to the two-stage MFC. The efficiency of single-stage MFC improved by adding buffer and maintaining a neutral pH level of the substrate. The results of this study emphasize the importance of reactor design and demonstrate that MFC can be a viable technology to generate bioenergy from food waste.

Destruction of PFAS in AFFF-impacted fire training pit water, with a continuous hydrothermal alkaline treatment reactor

As regulations are being established to limit the levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water and wastewater, effective treatment technologies are needed to remove or destroy PFAS in contaminated liquid matrices. Many military installations and airports have fire training ponds (FTPs) where PFAS-containing firefighting foams are discharged during training drills. FTP water disposal is expensive and challenging due to the high PFAS levels. Hydrothermal alkaline treatment (HALT) has previously been shown to destroy a wide range of PFAS compounds with a high degree of destruction and defluorination. In this study, we investigate the performance of a continuous flow HALT reactor for destroying PFAS in contaminated FTP water samples. Processing with 5 M-NaOH and 1.6 min of continuous processing results in >99% total PFAS destruction, and 10 min processing time yields >99% destruction of every measured PFAS species. Operating with 0.1 M-NaOH or 1 M-NaOH shows little effect on the destruction of measured perfluorosulfonic acids, while all measured perfluorocarboxylic acids and fluorotelomer sulfonates are reduced to levels below the method detection limits. Continuous HALT processing with sufficient NaOH loading appears to destroy parent PFAS compounds significantly faster than batch HALT processing, a positive indicator for scaling up HALT technology for practical applications in environmental site remediation activities.

Photocatalytic Oxidation for Volatile Organic Compounds Elimination: From Fundamental Research to Practical Applications

Photocatalysis is regarded as one of the most promising technologies for indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) elimination due to its low cost, safe operation, energy efficiency, and high mineralization efficiency under ambient conditions. However, the practical applications of this technology are limited, despite considerable research efforts in recent decades. Until now, most of the works were carried out in the laboratory and focused on exploring new catalytic materials. Only a few works involved the immobilization of catalysts and the design of reactors for practical applications. Therefore, this review systematically summarizes the research and development on photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) of VOCs, with emphasis on recent catalyst's immobilization and reactor designs in detail. First, different types of photocatalytic materials and the mechanisms for PCO of VOCs are briefly discussed. Then, both the catalyst's immobilization techniques and reactor designs are reviewed in detail. Finally, the existing challenges and future perspectives for PCO of VOCs are proposed. This work aims to provide updated information and research inspirations for the commercialization of this technology in the future.

Two-stage anaerobic digestion: State of technology and perspective roles in future energy systems

Two-stage anaerobic digestion (TSAD) systems have been studied on a laboratory scale for about 50 years. However, they have not yet reached industrial scale despite their potential for future energy systems. This review provides an analysis of the TSAD technology, including the influence of process parameters on biomass conversion rates. The most common substrate (35.2% of the 38 selected studies) used in the analysed data was in the category of rapidly hydrolysable industrial waste with an average dry matter content of 7.24%. The highest methane content of 85% was reached when digesting food waste in a combination of two mesophilic continuously stirred tank reactors with an acidic (pH 5.5) first stage and alkaline (pH 7) second stage. Therefore, the review shows the limitations of the TSAD technology, future research directions, and the effect of integration of TSAD systems into the current strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Electrocoagulation and electrooxidation technologies for pesticide removal from water or wastewater: A review

Pesticides are known to be threats to the environment and human health. Excessive use of pesticides in agricultural practice can contaminate water bodies, leading to cancer, asthma, neurological disorders, reproductive defects, and hormonal disruption. Electrochemical methods such as electrocoagulation and electrooxidation can be used for pesticide removal due to their numerous advantages such as high efficiency, less sludge production, and low operational cost. During electrocoagulation, dissolution of anode metals results in metal hydroxide complexes, which precipitate with the contaminant present in the reactor. Simultaneously, electro-flotation occurs at the cathode and results in the evolution of hydrogen gas bubbles, leading to flotation of floc to the top surface of the reactor. This review focuses on the removal mechanisms, kinetics, modeling, effects of influencing factors, and sludge characterization of pesticide removal using electrocoagulation and electrooxidation. Major influencing factors include cell configuration, electrode material, current density, pH, supporting electrolyte concentration. In general, aluminum and iron are the most common electrodes used for pesticide removal using electrocoagulation, while boron-doped diamond was used to a far greater extent as the electrode in electrooxidation studies. Greater than 99% removal efficiency was observed in both processes. Overall, this review summarizes the use of electrochemical methods for pesticide removal and offers valuable information to researchers in this area of study.

Novel system design for high solid lignocellulosic biomass conversion

A novel system (Oregon State University High Solids Reactor; OSU-HSR) was designed and constructed for enzymatic hydrolysis at ultrahigh solids content (40%) by promoting better mixing using low energy consumption in a horizontal reactor with a new impeller design and a controllable feeding unit. System performance was evaluated using separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) and simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) methodologies. Using the dilute acid pretreated wheat straw as the substrate in the OSU-HSR system, the highest glucose (219.7 g/L) and ethanol (127.1 g/L) concentrations were achieved with the use of the SHF method while the highest ethanol concentration using SSF method was 134.5 g/L. The SSF method increased the return on investment to 12.21% with an estimated global warming potential of 54.5 g CO₂ eq/MJ Ethanol. The OSU-HSR successfully provided effective mixing and different fed-batch schemes, and can be used for efficient biochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into bio-chemicals and biofuels.

A critical review on the electrosorption of organic compounds in aqueous effluent - Influencing factors and engineering considerations

Despite being an old process from the end of the 19^th century, electrosorption has attracted renewed attention in recent years because of its unique properties and advantages compared to other separation technologies and due to the concomitant development of new porous electrode materials. Electrosorption offer the advantage to separate the pollutants from wastewater with the possibility of selectively adsorbing and desorbing the targeted compounds. A comprehensive review of electrosorption is provided with particular attention given to the electrosorption of organic compounds, unlike existing capacitive deionization review papers that only focus on inorganic salts. The background and principle of electrosorption are first presented, while the influence of the main parameters (e.g., electrode materials, electrode potential, physico-chemistry of the electrolyte solutions, type of compounds, co-sorption effect, reactor design, etc.) is then detailed and the modeling and engineering aspects are discussed. Finally, the main output and future prospects about recovery studies and combination between electro-sorption/desorption and degradation processes are given. This review particularly highlights that carbon-based materials have been mostly employed (85% of studies) as porous electrode in organics electrosorption, while existing studies lack of electrode stability and durability tests in real conditions. These electrodes have been implemented in a fixed-bed reactor design most of the time (43% of studies) due to enhanced mass transport. Moreover, the electrode potential is a major criterion: it should be applied in the non-faradaic domain otherwise unwanted reactions can easily occur, especially the corrosion of carbon from 0.21 V/standard hydrogen electrode or the water oxidation/reduction. Furthermore, there is lack of studies performed with actual effluents and without addition of supporting electrolyte, which is crucial for testing the real efficiency of the process. The associated predictive model will be required by considering the matrix effect along with transport phenomena and physico-chemical characteristics of targeted organic compounds.

Electrocoagulation technology for water purification: An update review on reactor design and some newly concerned pollutants removal

Water shortage and quality deterioration are plaguing people all over the world. Providing sustainable and affordable treatment solutions to these problems is a need of the hour. Electrocoagulation (EC) technology is a burgeoning alternative for effective water treatment, which offers the virtues such as compact equipment, easy operation, and low sludge production. Compared to other water purification technologies, EC shows excellent removal efficacy for a wide range of contaminants in water and has great potential for addressing limitations of conventional water purification technologies. This review summarizes the latest development of principle, characteristics, and reactor design of EC. The design of key parameters including reactor shape, power supply type, current density, as well as electrode configuration is further elaborated. In particular, typical water treatment systems powered by renewable energy (solar photovoltaic and wind turbine systems) are proposed. Further, this review provides an overview on expanded application of EC in the removal of some newly concerned pollutants in recent years, including arsenite, perfluorinated compounds, pharmaceuticals, oil, bacteria, and viruses. The removal efficiency and mechanisms of these pollutants are also discussed. Finally, future research trend and focus are further recommended. This review can bridge the large knowledge gap for the EC application that is beneficial for environmental researchers and engineers.

New approach for the dimensionless analysis of a unidirectional flow solar reactor based on Damköhler's number profiles

A methodology for the analysis of the behavior of complex reactors based on the construction of profiles of a dimensionless number (Damköhler) for each main chemical species (Dai) was proposed. A 4-chlorophenol mineralization reaction in a heterogeneous solar reactor with suspended TiO₂ and addition of H₂O₂ with tubular geometry and radiation collectors, fluid flow and a recirculation system was selected as a complex model system in order to validate the approach. The dynamic behavior of the reactor in dimensionless variables was modeled as a function of Dai. Where Dai(z,t) is a local property and grouped the optical and surface's properties of the catalyst, catalyst load, radiation intensity, the photon absorption rate, rate of non-photochemical reactions, the H₂O₂ effect, the reaction rate of different stages like adsorption, attack of radicals, surface reactions, plus design and operation variables like reactor volume and volumetric flow.

A coupling of orthogonal collocation and Runge-Kutta methods were used to solve the PDEs and carry out the simulations to the different experimental conditions, resulting in profiles of Dai, Ci, and conversion in function of time and space. The Dai profiles proposed in the new methodology are capable of describing the disturbances in solar reactors, to indicate consumption and generation rates, instantaneous changes of reaction rate, to describe competitive reactions and quenching effects and to determine equilibrium concentrations, all of the above at each time and space. Therefore, this approach is a analysis tool of reactors which complements the concentration profile. This methodology can be extended to other reactive systems, adapting the intrinsic reaction rates.

A novel high rotation bubble reactor for the treatment of a model pollutant in ozone/goethite/H2O2 and UV/goethite coupled processes

This work proposes a novel approach for the coupling of ozonation and Fenton processes using a new prototype of a high rotation bubble reactor (HRBR), which improves utilization of the ozone and hydrogen peroxide through bubble generation and axial and radial dispersion of the flow. The HRBR integrates the rotor and the diffuser in the same device facilitating the generation and dispersion of the ozone bubbles inside the reaction tank. Thus, the mass transfer to the liquid phase is enhanced. Most of the experiments were carried out under neutral pH and 1580 rpm of agitation during the 20 min of reaction. Total ibuprofen degradation was achieved within 20 min of operation for most of the couplings and individual processes evaluated. It was successfully demonstrated that the HRBR can be used as a reactive system for heterogeneous Fenton and ozonation coupling because it presents a high synergy. For the ozonation process, the reactor also displayed a good performance because the residual ozone in the gas is lower than 0.4 mg/L, which indicates that there is a suitable ozone utilization. Ibuprofen degradation by other processes like oxidation direct by H₂O₂ and heterogeneous Fenton was 28.0% and 73.1%, respectively. It was determined that the reaction rate, synergy, OUI (ozone utilized index), and consumption of electrical energy (EE/O) of the coupled processes could be improved by using the HRBR depending on the experimental conditions.

Sizing of reactors by charts of Damköhler's number for solutions of dimensionless design equations

The reaction kinetic rate and mass transport play an important role in the sizing and scale-up of reactors. The Damköhler's dimensionless number ( D a ) is the quotient of these effects. A new interpretation of D a as a local property is introduced D a ( x , y , z , t ) . A new graphical methodology is proposed for the sizing and scale-up of unidirectional flow reactors and CSTRs. The partial differential equation (PDE) and algebraic that describe the continuity within these reactors transform into dimensionless variables, and the conversion at the output is expressed as a function of the conditions at the input D a 0 . The operating conditions as volumetric flow, residence time; design variables as reactor volume; and intrinsic reaction rate are involved in D a 0 . The equations are solved numerically to develop the design charts D a 0 vs X. The design volume is linear with D a 0 , and the conversion is obtained from the charts ( D a 0 vs X) or vice versa. Using these charts avoids the analytical or numerical solution of the PDE that governs the unidirectional flow reactors becoming an easy tool for scale-up. The article portrays how to use these diagrams. Reactors with D a 0 < 0.1 have a low conversion per pass, the charts also allow estimating the number of recirculations required as a function of the overall conversion. Reactors with the same conversion have the same D a 0 , both laboratory and industrial scale. Then, the D a number is presented as a fundamental parameter for design and scaling-up these reactors.

TiO2 nanotube arrays-based reactor for photocatalytic oxidation of parabens mixtures in ultrapure water: Effects of photocatalyst properties, operational parameters and light source

Self-organized TiO₂ nanotubes as immobilized photocatalysts were evaluated in detail for the photocatalytic degradation of parabens mixtures from ultrapure water. This kind of approach can be a very suitable option for emerging contaminants degradation considering the possibility of the catalyst reuse and recovery which will be simpler than when catalytic powders are used. The anodization method was applied for the TiO₂ nanotubes production under different preparation voltages (20, 30 and 40 V). These preparation conditions are important on the morphological characteristics of nanotubes such as length, as well as internal and external diameters. The photocatalytic efficiency was dependent on the materials preparation voltages. The photocatalytic oxidation was evaluated using two different irradiation sources, namely UVA and sunlight. These irradiation sources were evaluated for parabens mixture degradation using different number of catalytic plates. The increase of the number of plates improved the parabens degradation possibly due to the availability of more active sites which can be relevant for the hydroxyl radical's generation. The effect of the reactor design was also evaluated using sunlight irradiation. The configuration, position and solar concentrators can be important for the performance of degradation. The mechanism of degradation was analysed through by-products formation under sunlight irradiation. The main responsible for parabens degradation was hydroxyl radical. Decarboxylation, dealkylation and hydroxylation seem to be the most important reactional steps for the mixture decontamination.

Design and analysis of continuous-flow reactors for copper sulfide precipitation process by a computational method

Sulfide precipitation method has been widely applied in heavy metal-polluted wastewater treatment, due to the low solubility of most metal sulfide precipitates. Nevertheless, the relevant hydrodynamics studies on the metal sulfide precipitation process are rarely found in the literature. In this study, three continuous-flow sulfide precipitation reactors (CFSPRs) were designed and evaluated by a computational method. To characterize the process efficiency of copper sulfide precipitation in different reactors, fluid velocity field, species concentration distribution, and reaction rate distribution maps were acquired as simulation results. A two-factor designed set of boundary conditions was used to determine their effects on processing efficiency. The model results indicate that the inflow rate and reactor layout have significant effects on the copper sulfide precipitation process. The layout of reactor no. 3 and the inflow rate of 0.75 m/s prove to have higher treatment efficiencies than those at other conditions. Possible explanations for the simulation results were proposed. The model data of effluent concentration were compared and statistically analyzed with the measured concentrations of copper ion and sulfur ion in the outlet stream, and the results demonstrate a strong correlation between them, which suggests the model is reasonably accurate.

Enzyme-Based Electrobiotechnological Synthesis

Oxidoreductases are enzymes with a high potential for organic synthesis, as their selectivity often exceeds comparable chemical syntheses. The biochemical cofactors of these enzymes need regeneration during synthesis. Several regeneration methods are available but the electrochemical approach offers an efficient and quasi mass-free method for providing the required redox equivalents. Electron transfer systems involving direct regeneration of natural and artificial cofactors, indirect electrochemical regeneration via a mediator, and indirect electroenzymatic cofactor regeneration via enzyme and mediator have been investigated. This chapter gives an overview of electroenzymatic syntheses with oxidoreductases, structured by the enzyme subclass and their usage of cofactors for electron relay. Particular attention is given to the productivity of electroenzymatic biotransformation processes. Because most electroenzymatic syntheses suffer from low productivity, we discuss reaction engineering concepts to overcome the main limiting factors, with a focus on media conductivity optimization, approaches to prevent enzyme inactivation, and the application of advanced cell designs. Selecting the best piping arrangement for scaling-up an annular channel reactor: An experimental and computational fluid dynamics study

This study is focused on the selection of the best piping arrangement for a pilot scale annular channel reactor intended for the remediation of waters and wastewaters. Two annular channel reactors composed of a single UV lamp and distinct piping arrangements were considered: (i) a novel reactor with tangential inlet/outlet pipes - the FluHelik reactor, and (ii) a conventional Jets reactor. These two reactors were manufactured at lab scale and characterized in terms of residence time distribution (RTD), radiant power and ability to degrade aqueous solutions spiked with a model compound - 3-amino-5-methylisoxazole (AMI) - by H₂O₂/UVC and UVC processes. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were used to assess the hydrodynamics, RTD and UV radiation intensity distribution of both reactors at pilot scale. In general, experimental results at lab scale revealed quite similar RTDs, radiant powers and AMI degradation rates for both reactors. On the other hand, CFD simulations at pilot scale revealed the generation of a helical motion of fluid around the UVC lamp in the FluHelik reactor, inducing: (i) a longer contact time between fluid particles and UV light, (ii) more intense dynamics of macromixing as a result of larger velocity gradients, turbulent intensities and dispersion of RTD values around the peak, and (iii) a more homogeneous UV radiation distribution. In addition, the design of the FluHelik reactor can favor the implementation of various reactors in series, promoting its application at industrial scale. The FluHelik reactor was chosen for scaling-up. A pre-pilot scale treatment unit containing this reactor was constructed and its feasibility was proven.

Anaerobic membrane bioreactors for biohydrogen production: Recent developments, challenges and perspectives

Biohydrogen as one of the most appealing energy vector for the future represents attractive avenue in alternative energy research. Recently, variety of biohydrogen production pathways has been suggested to improve the key features of the process. Nevertheless, researches are still needed to overcome remaining barriers to practical applications such as low yields and production rates. Considering practicality aspects, this review emphasized on anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) for biological hydrogen production. Recent advances and emerging issues associated with biohydrogen generation in AnMBR technology are critically discussed. Several techniques are highlighted that are aimed at overcoming these barriers. Moreover, environmental and economical potentials along with future research perspectives are addressed to drive biohydrogen technology towards practicality and economical-feasibility.

Fermentative hydrogen and methane co-production from anaerobic co-digestion of organic wastes at high loading rate coupling continuously and sequencing batch digesters

The anaerobic co-digestion of the most abundant organic wastes was investigated for enhancing biogas production rate and quality. The used feedstock was composed of fruit and vegetable waste (FVW), waste-activated sludge (WAS), olive mill wastewater (OMW) and cattle manure (CM). A considerable methane yield of 340 L/kg volatile solid (VS) inlet was obtained using single-stage anaerobic sequencing batch reactors (ASBRs). However, VS biodegradation becomes difficult at high organic loading rate (OLR). Therefore, a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) was integrated to the ASBR for waste pre-digestion. The dark fermentation leads to the improvement of organic matter solubilisation and bio-hydrogen productivity, reaching 0.73 L/L/day (H₂ content of 49.8%) when pH decreased to 5.8. Therefore, methane productivity increased from 0.6 to 1.86 L/L/day in the methanogenic reactor with a better VS biodegradation (91.1%) at high OLR. Furthermore, the bio-hythane production was performed through a controlled biogas recirculation from the dark fermentation stage into the methaniser to reach 842.4 L/kg VS inlet. The produced biogas was composed of 8% H₂, 28.5% CO₂ and 63.5% CH₄. Therefore, two-stage anaerobic co-digestion with coupled CH₄ and H₂ recuperation may be an important contribution for pollution control and high-rate bioenergy recovery (21.1 kJ/g VS inlet) from organic wastes.

Sequential dark and photo fermentation hydrogen production from hydrolyzed corn stover: A pilot test using 11 m3 reactor

Pilot tests of sequential dark and photo fermentation H₂ production were for the first time conducted in a 11 m³ reactor (3 m³ for dark and 8 m³ for photo compartments). A combined solar and light-emitting diode illumination system and a thermal controlling system was installed and tested. With dark fermentation unit maintained at pH 4.5 and 35 °C and photo fermentation unit at pH 7.0 and 30 °C, the overall biogas production rate using hydrolyzed corn stover as substrate reached 87.8 ± 3.8 m³/d with 68% H₂ content, contributed by dark unit at 7.5 m³-H₂/m³-d and by photo unit at 4.7 m³/m³-d. Large variation was noted for H₂ production rate in different compartments of the tested units, revealing the adverse effects of poor mixing, washout, and other inhomogeneity associated with large reactor operations.

Design of an ultrasonic tank reactor for copper deposition at electrodes separated by a narrow gap

This work describes the design and testing of an ultrasonic reactor suitable for processes which require agitation within a narrow gap in a tank geometry. A maskless microfabrication process was used to validate the ultrasonic reactor design. This mask-less electrodeposition method requires the inter-electrode distance between the anode tool and the cathode substrate to be maintained at 300 μm, and sufficient stirring of the electrolyte by ultrasound agitation. A design was proposed allowing 74 mm × 105 mm size substrates to be mounted into an electrode holder and loaded into an 18 L ultrasonic reactor. Experiments were carried out to test the uniformity of the mass transfer within the narrow electrode gap at different locations on the substrate, and to validate the feasibility of a mask-less metal plating technique by depositing features of μm-scale. When increasing ultrasonic powers from 30 to 60 W L^-1, increasing agitation was observed at the centre of the substrate, but not at its edges. A Sherwood number correlation showed developing turbulence within the narrow gap, even in the centre of the plate. Micron scale features were plated onto A7 substrates, but the deposited features were 2.5 times the original width. The work showed that sonic streaming can produce sufficient agitation in long sub millimetre channels which can be employed to overcome mass transfer limitations.

Biochemicals from food waste and recalcitrant biomass via syngas fermentation: A review

An effective method for the production of value-added chemicals from food waste and lignocellulosic materials is a hybrid thermal-biological process, which involves gasification of the solid materials to syngas (primarily CO and H₂) followed by fermentation. This paper reviews the recent advances in this process. The special focus is on the cultivation methods that involve the use of single strains, defined mixed cultures and undefined mixed cultures for production of carboxylic acids and higher alcohols. A rate limiting step in these processes is the low mass transfer between the gas and the liquid phases. Therefore, novel techniques that can enhance the gas-liquid mass transfer including membrane- and trickle-bed bioreactors were discussed. Such bioreactors have shown promising results in increasing the volumetric mass transfer coefficient (k_La). High gas pressure also influences the mass transfer in certain batch processes, although the presence of impurities in the gas would impede the process.

Dry syngas purification process for coal gas produced in oxy-fuel type integrated gasification combined cycle power generation with carbon dioxide capturing feature

Electricity production from coal fuel with minimizing efficiency penalty for the carbon dioxide abatement will bring us sustainable and compatible energy utilization. One of the promising options is oxy-fuel type Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (oxy-fuel IGCC) power generation that is estimated to achieve thermal efficiency of 44% at lower heating value (LHV) base and provide compressed carbon dioxide (CO₂) with concentration of 93 vol%. The proper operation of the plant is established by introducing dry syngas cleaning processes to control halide and sulfur compounds satisfying tolerate contaminants level of gas turbine. To realize the dry process, the bench scale test facility was planned to demonstrate the first-ever halide and sulfur removal with fixed bed reactor using actual syngas from O₂-CO₂ blown gasifier for the oxy-fuel IGCC power generation. Design parameter for the test facility was required for the candidate sorbents for halide removal and sulfur removal. Breakthrough test was performed on two kinds of halide sorbents at accelerated condition and on honeycomb desulfurization sorbent at varied space velocity condition. The results for the both sorbents for halide and sulfur exhibited sufficient removal within the satisfactory short depth of sorbent bed, as well as superior bed conversion of the impurity removal reaction. These performance evaluation of the candidate sorbents of halide and sulfur removal provided rational and affordable design parameters for the bench scale test facility to demonstrate the dry syngas cleaning process for oxy-fuel IGCC system as the scaled up step of process development.

Removable air-cathode to overcome cathode biofouling in microbial fuel cells

An innovative microbial fuel cell (MFC) design is described, which allows the air-cathode to be replaced easily without draining the electrolyte. MFCs equipped with 9-cm² or 50-cm² bioanodes provided 0.6 and 0.7W/m² (referred to the cathode surface area) and were boosted to 1.25 and 1.96W/m², respectively, when the initial air-cathode was replaced by a new one. These results validate the practical interest of removable air-cathodes and evidence the importance of the cathode biofouling that takes place during the MFC starting phase. As this biofouling is compensated by the concomitant improvement of the bioanodes it cannot be detected on the power curves and may be a widespread cause of performance underestimation.

Optimization of process parameters for removal of heavy metals by biomass of Cu and Co-doped alginate-coated chitosan nanoparticles

In this study, the efficiency of alginate-coated chitosan nanoparticles (Alg-CS-NPs) for removal of heavy metals from industrial effluents was investigated. To this end, the researchers constructed a reactor containing biomass, using response surface methodology (RSM) for process optimization. Reactor tests were carried out with both synthetic and industrial effluents containing nickel. The optimum conditions to achieve maximum removal efficiency (RE) rates for both synthetic and industrial effluents were specified for contact time (0-120min), pH level (1-9), biomass dose (0.1-0.9g), and initial metal ion concentration (10-90mg/L). It was determined that 94.48% of the nickel could be removed at pH=3, 70mg/L initial nickel concentration, a dose of 0.3g biomass, and 30min contact time. The kinetic data fit well to a pseudo second-order model and the equilibrium data of the metal ions could be described well with Freundlich isotherm models.

Insights into the scalability of magnetostrictive ultrasound technology for water treatment applications

To date, the successful application of large scale ultrasound in water treatment has been a challenge. Magnetostrictive ultrasound technologies for constructing a large-scale water treatment system are proposed in this study. Comprehensive energy evaluation of the proposed system was conducted. The effects of chosen waveform, scalability and reactor design on the performance of the system were explored using chemical dosimetry. Of the fundamental waveforms tested; sine, triangle and square, the highest chemical yield resulted from the square wave source. Scaling up from the 0.5L bench-scale system to the 15 L large-scale unit resulted in a gain of approximately 50% in sonochemical efficiency (SE) for the system. The use of a reactor tank with 45° inclined sides further increased SE of the system by 70%. The ability of the large scale system in removing contaminants from natural water samples was also investigated. The results revealed that the large-scale unit was capable of achieving a maximum removal of microbes and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) of 35% and 5.7% respectively at a power density approximately 3.9 W/L. The results of this study suggest that magnetostrictive ultrasound technology excited with square wave has the potential to be competitive in the water treatment industry.

Ultrasound pressure distributions generated by high frequency transducers in large reactors

The performance of an ultrasound reactor chamber relies on the sound pressure level achieved throughout the system. The active volume of a high frequency ultrasound chamber can be determined by the sound pressure penetration and distribution provided by the transducers. This work evaluated the sound pressure levels and uniformity achieved in water by selected commercial scale high frequency plate transducers without and with reflector plates. Sound pressure produced by ultrasonic plate transducers vertically operating at frequencies of 400 kHz (120 W) and 2 MHz (128 W) was characterized with hydrophones in a 2 m long chamber and their effective operating distance across the chamber's vertical cross section was determined. The 2 MHz transducer produced the highest pressure amplitude near the transducer surface, with a sharp decline of approximately 40% of the sound pressure occurring in the range between 55 and 155 mm from the transducer. The placement of a reflector plate 500 mm from the surface of the transducer was shown to improve the sound pressure uniformity of 2 MHz ultrasound. Ultrasound at 400 kHz was found to penetrate the fluid up to 2 m without significant losses. Furthermore, 400 kHz ultrasound generated a more uniform sound pressure distribution regardless of the presence or absence of a reflector plate. The choice of the transducer distance to the opposite reactor wall therefore depends on the transducer plate frequency selected. Based on pressure measurements in water, large scale 400 kHz reactor designs can consider larger transducer distance to opposite wall and larger active cross-section, and therefore can reach higher volumes than when using 2 MHz transducer plates.
