The cathodically pretreated boron-doped diamond electrode as an environmentally friendly electrochemical tool for the detection and monitoring of mesotrione in food samples

Excessive pesticide use can harm human health, making it essential to develop new techniques to monitor hazardous pesticides in food. Our study focuses on detecting mesotrione (MST) using an unmodified boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode. This was the first application of cathodically pretreated BDD electrode for the detection of MST, based on its oxidation at a high potential value of +1.4 V. We theoretically examined the oxidation mechanism of MST trough the utilization of density functional theory (DFT) methodology. The utilized DPV method achieved a detection limit of 0.45 μM and showed satisfactory selectivity. The practical application of this method was demonstrated by examining corn-based food products. To ensure practical application of the method, MST was deliberately added to the samples to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed method. The effectiveness of the method was confirmed by using HPLC method. This environmentally-friendly approach can establish a solid foundation for future use in food analysis.

Metrisor: A novel diagnostic method for metritis detection in cattle based on machine learning and sensors

The Metrisor device has been developed using gas sensors for rapid, highly accurate and effective diagnosis of metritis. 513 cattle uteri were collected from abattoirs and swabs were taken for microbiological testing. The Metrisor device was used to measure intrauterine gases. The results showed a bacterial growth rate of 75.75 % in uteri with clinical metritis. In uteri positive for clinical metritis, the most commonly isolated and identified bacteria were Trueperella pyogenes, Fusobacterium necrophorum and Escherichia coli. Measurements taken with Metrisor to determine the presence of metritis in the uterus yielded the most successful results in evaluations of relevant machine learning algorithms. The ICO (Iterative Classifier Optimizer) algorithm achieved 71.22 % accuracy, 64.40 % precision and 71.20 % recall. Experiments were conducted to examine bacterial growth in the uterus and the random forest algorithm produced the most successful results with accuracy, precision and recall values of 78.16 %, 75.30 % and 78.20 % respectively. ICO also showed high performance in experiments to determine bacterial growth in metritis-positive uteri, with accuracy, precision and recall values of 78.97 %, 77.20 % and 79.00 %, respectively. In conclusion, the Metrisor device demonstrated high accuracy in detecting metritis and bacterial growth in uteri and could identify bacteria such as E. coli, S. aureus, coagulase-negative staphylococci, T. pyogenes, Bacillus spp., Clostridium spp. and F. necrophorum with rates up to 80 %. It provides a reliable, rapid and effective means of detecting metritis in animals in the field without the need for laboratory facilities.

The impact of hollow core-shell nanozymes in biosensing: A case study of p-Fe3O4@PDA@ZIF-67

BACKGROUND

Nanozymes, a new class of nanomaterials, have emerged as promising substitutes for enzymes in biosensor design due to their exceptional stability, affordability, and ready availability. While nanozymes address many limitations of natural enzymes, they still face challenges, particularly in achieving the catalytic activity levels of their natural counterparts. This indicates the need for enhancing the sensitivity of biosensors based on nanozymes. The catalytic activity of nanozyme can be significantly improved by regulating its size, morphology, and surface composition of nanomaterial.

RESULTS

In this work, a kind of hollow core-shell structure was designed to enhance the catalytic activity of nanozymes. The hollow core-shell structure material consists of a nanozymes core layer, a hollow layer, and a MOF shell layer. Taking the classic peroxidase like Fe3O4 as an example, the development of a novel nanozyme@MOF, specifically p-Fe3O4@PDA@ZIF-67, is detailed, showcasing its application in enhancing the sensitivity of sensors based on Fe3O4 nanozymes. This innovative nanocomposite, featuring that MOF layer was designed to adsorb the signal molecules of the sensor to improve the utilization rate of reactive oxygen species generated by the nanozymes catalyzed reactions and the hollow layer was designed to prevent the active sites of nanozymes from being cover by the MOF layer. The manuscript emphasizes the nanocomposite's remarkable sensitivity in detecting hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), coupled with high specificity and reproducibility, even in complex environments like milk samples.

SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY

This work firstly proposed and proved that Fe3O4 nanozyme@MOF with hollow layer structure was designed to improve the catalytic activity of the Fe3O4 nanozyme and the sensitivity of the sensors based on Fe3O4 nanozyme. This research marks a significant advancement in nanozyme technology, demonstrating the potential of structural innovation in creating high-performance, sensitive, and stable biosensors for various applications.

Ultrahigh sensitive and rapid-response self-powered flexible pressure sensor based on sandwiched piezoelectric composites

Flexible sensors and actuators are the basis for realizing the Internet of Everything. This study identifies specific interfacial polarization and filler dispersion challenges in flexible sensors. A novel sandwich-structured flexible sensor with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-filled Nb2CTx as the interlayer and poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)]-filled barium titanate (BTO) as the upper and lower layers was designed and fabricated. The thickness of the interlayer was optimized to be 6.2 μm, resulting in an ultrahigh sensitivity of 16.05 V/N and ultrashort response time of 626 μs. The interlayer achieved an oriented arrangement of the dipoles in the upper and lower piezoelectric films through interfacial polarization, enhancing the piezoelectric output and sensitivity. The proposed mechanism was confirmed by the dielectric properties, local piezoelectric response, cross-sectional potential simulation, and interfacial electrical calculations. Additionally, the sensor effectively distinguishes various body movements, facial micro-expressions, and throat vibrations during vocalization, and can be applied to ultrahigh-sensitive self-powered flexible piezoelectric pressure sensors.

Second-order scattering sensor based on the Zn0.97La0.03O compound for selective and stable detection of glycated albumin

Here, we presented a second-order scattering sensor based on the Zn0.97La0.03O compound (LaZnO) for selective and stable detection of glycated albumin (GA, glycemic long-term biomarker). The LaZnO sample was obtained through the co-precipitation method and then characterized using microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. Furthermore, the selectivity, molecular interference, temporal stability, and pH effects of the LaZnO SOS signal in the absence and presence of GA were investigated. The results indicate the stability of the SOS signal over more than 60 days. Assays conducted within the pH range of 5 to 8 indicate that the detection of GA remains unaffected under the given conditions. Selectivity studies show that the SOS signal of LaZnO is reduced only upon contact with GA, while interference studies show that detection is not affected by other chemical species. Additionally, the calibration curve test showed high sensitivity of the material, with a detection limit of 0.55 µg/ml. All the results suggest that LaZnO can deliver efficiency, selectivity, accuracy, and fast response as a GA biosensor, emphasizing LaZnO's usefulness in detecting protein biomarkers.

Nanocellulose-mediated conductive hydrogels with NIR photoresponse and fatigue resistance for multifunctional wearable sensors

The rapid development of hydrogels has garnered significant attention in health monitoring and human motion sensing. However, the synthesis of multifunctional conductive hydrogels with excellent strain/pressure sensing and photoresponsiveness remains a challenge. Herein, the conductive hydrogels (BPTP) with excellent mechanical properties, fatigue resistance and photoresponsive behavior composed of polyacrylamide (PAM) matrix, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yloxy-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNs) reinforcement and polydopamine-modified black phosphorus (BP@PDA) photosensitizer are prepared through a facile free-radical polymerization approach. The PDA adhered to the BP surface by π-π stacking promotes the optical properties of BP while also preventing BP oxidation from water. Through hydrogen bonding interactions, TOCNs improve the homogeneous dispersion of BP@PDA nanosheets and the mechanical toughness of BPTP. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of PDA and TOCNs, the conductive BPTP integrates superior mechanical performances, excellent photoelectric response and photothermal conversion capability. The BPTP-based sensor with high cycling stability demonstrates superior strain sensitivity (GF = 6.0) and pressure sensing capability (S = 0.13 kPa-1) to monitor various human activities. Therefore, this work delivers an alternative construction strategy for generating high-performance conductive hydrogels as multifunctional wearable sensors.

Integrating of analytical techniques with enzyme-mimicking nanomaterials for the fabrication of microfluidic systems for biomedical analysis

Bioanalysis faces challenges in achieving fast, reliable, and point-of-care (POC) determination methods for timely diagnosis and prognosis of diseases. POC devices often display lower sensitivity compared to laboratory-based methods, limiting their ability to quantify low concentrations of target analytes. To enhance sensitivity, the synthesis of new materials and improvement of the efficiency of the analytical strategies are necessary. Enzyme-mimicking materials have revolutionized the field of the fabrication of new high-throughput sensing devices. The integration of microfluidic chips with analytical techniques offers several benefits, such as easy miniaturization, need for low biological sample volume, etc., while also enhancing the sensitivity of the probe. The use enzyme-like nanomaterials in microfluidic systems can offer portable strategies for real-time and reliable detection of biological agents. Colorimetry and electrochemical methods are commonly utilized in the fabrication of nanozyme-based microfluidic systems. The review summarizes recent developments in enzyme-mimicking materials-integrated microfluidic analytical methods in biomedical analysis and discusses the current challenges, advantages, and potential future directions.

Sweat as a source of non-invasive biomarkers for clinical diagnosis: An overview

Sweat has excellent potential as one of the sources of non-invasive biomarkers for clinical diagnosis. It is relatively easy to collect and process and may contain different disease-specific markers and drug metabolites, making it ideal for various clinical applications. This article discusses the anatomy of sweat glands and their role in sweat production, as well as the history and development of multiple sweat sample collection and analysis techniques. Another primary focus of this article is the application of sweat detection in clinical disease diagnosis and other life scenarios. Finally, the limitations and prospects of sweat analysis are discussed.

Low voltage electric-double-layer transistor nonenzymic erythromycin sensors based on molecularly imprinted polymers

Erythromycin (Ery) is a commonly used antibiotic that can be found ubiquitously in water bodies. The increasing apprehension over the adverse effects of antibiotic remnants in aquatic environments necessitates the prompt advancement of erythromycin detection techniques that are both highly sensitive and compact. Here, we propose a non-enzyme Ery sensor that integrates a mesoporous SiO2-based low-voltage oxide electric-double-layer transistor (EDLT) with a molecular imprinting technique, featuring a molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) functionalized gate electrode. The mesoporous SiO2-based oxide transistor exhibits excellent electrical characteristics, including an operating voltage of small than 1.0 V, an on/off ratio exceeding 106 and a mobility of 14.95 cm2V-1s-1. At an ultra-low operating voltage within 0.5 V, the sensor exhibits a linear response to the concentration range of 1 nM-10 μM of Ery, with a detection limit of 0.22 nM and a sensitivity of 23.3 mV dec-1. Besides, the single-spike dynamic sensing mode effectively reduces the power consumption of the detection. The proposed sensor provides a rapid and convenient approach to detect Ery in aqueous environments, with benefits such as miniaturization, high sensitivity, and simplicity.

Zigzag boron nitride nanotube functionalization as a sensor for the recognition of group IIA (Mg2+, Ca2+) metal ions, quasi-metal (Si2+, Ge2+) ions, and transition metal (Cu2+, Zn2+) ions: a computational study

CONTEXT

Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) provide an exceptional and sophisticated platform for detecting metal ions with high surface area and remarkable chemical stability. Metal cations tend to bind to the surface of BNNTs, which leads to significant changes in the electrical properties of nanotubes. BNNT-based metal ion sensors have shown promising results in various applications, including water quality monitoring, biomedical research, industrial quality control, and environmental monitoring. In the present study, we have explored the electronic sensitivity of the BNNT to metal ions (Si2+, Ge2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Mg2+, and Ca2+). The interaction between the ions with the pristine BNNT is performed in the solution phase. The results show that ion adsorption on the nanotube surface is exothermic and favorable. The density of states calculation is presented to investigate the electronic properties of the nanotube during the adsorption process. The results display that an increase in the electrical conductivity of the complexes accompanies the reduction in the energy gap. Based on the obtained data, the Si2+ and Ge2+ cations adsorbed on the BNNT with satisfactory Eg changes (%ΔE) can be promising candidates for better sensing ability.

METHOD

All calculations are conducted within the density functional theory (DFT) using the ωB97XD functional and 6-31G(d,p) basis set. The present approach incorporates the utilization of empirical atom-atom dispersion in conjunction with long-range correction. The calculations are performed using the quantum chemistry package GAMESS, and the obtained results are visualized by employing the GaussView 6.0.16 program.

Chiral carbon dots derived from tryptophan and threonine for enantioselective sensing of L/D-Lysine

Presently, most fluorescent probes for amino acid enantiomers detection require metal ions participation, which greatly increases the detection steps and costs, and affects the accuracy of detection results. To solve this problem, a dual pattern recognition sensor of chiral carbon dots (L-Try-Thr-CDs) with a quantum yield of 36.23 % was prepared by a one-step solvothermal method for the highly selective detection of lysine (Lys) enantiomers. Under optimal experimental conditions, the fluorescence and circular dichroism (CD) signals of the obtained L-Try-Thr-CDs could rapidly and effectively responded to L-Lys with limits of detection (LOD) of 16.51 nM and 24.38 nM, respectively, much lower than previously reported sensors. Importantly, the L-Try-Thr-CDs as a dual-mode sensor could not only detect amino acid enantiomers and simplify the steps, but also avoid inaccurate detection results due to unstable metal ions. Furthermore, the L-Try-Thr-CDs could detect L-Lys in living cells via a fluorescence microscope because of their excellent fluorescence characteristics and low toxicity. These results indicated that the dual-mode sensor not only provided a practical strategy for the design of new fluorescent probes, but also possessed outstanding application prospects in the accurate detection of lysine enantiomers.

Visualized detection of water by modified metal organic framework-199 and its portable test paper with reversible color change

Herein, we fabricate a melamine modified metal organic framework-199 composite (MOF-199@melamine), of which the structure is affected by the dynamics of the guest H2O molecule with significant color change. It realizes the visualized quantitative detection of water in a variety of organic solvents within 30 s. Moreover, DMF restored the original structure by replacing H2O molecules, realizing the regeneration of the materials. On this basis, PTFE-MOF-199@melamine test paper is developed to portably detect water content in organic solvents (maximum 0 %-98 % (v/v) water content) and ambient relative humidity (11-85 %). The test paper can be recycled four times with a regeneration rate higher than 90 %. The results are expected to solve the problems of existed electrochemical or fluorescence strategy such as the complicated operation process and signal output/reading system.

Recent advances in sensing toxic nerve agents through DMMP model simulant using diverse nanomaterials-based chemical sensors

Recent terrorist assaults have demonstrated the need for the exploration and design of sustainable and stable chemical sensors with quick reaction times combined with great sensitivity. Among several classes of chemical warfare agents, nerve agents have been proven to be the most hazardous. Even short-term exposure to them can result in severe toxic effects. Human beings inadvertently face the after-effects of these chemicals even several years after these chemicals were used. Due to the extreme toxicity and difficulty in handling, dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), a simulant of nerve agents with much lesser toxicity, is frequently used in laboratories as a substitute. Having a chemical structure almost identical to those of nerve agents, DMMP can mimic the properties of nerve agents. Through this paper, authors have attempted to introduce the evolution of several chemical sensors used to detect DMMP in recent years, including field-effect transistors, chemicapacitors, chemiresistors, and mass-sensitive sensors. A detailed discussion of the role of nanomaterials as chemical sensors in the detection of DMMP has been the main focus of the work through a comprehensive overview of the research on gas sensors that have been reported making use of the properties of a wide range of nanomaterials.

A smartphone-assisted portable sensing hydrogel modules based on UCNPs and Co3O4 NPs for fluorescence quantitation of hypoxanthine in aquatic products

Hypoxanthine is a promising index for evaluating the freshness of various aquatic products. Combined the hydrogels containing upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), Co3O4 NPs, and N-ethyl-N-(3-sulfopropyl)-3-methylaniline sodium salt/4-amino-antipyrine (TOPS/4-AAP) with a smartphone, a portable sensor was developed for the convenient, sensitive detection of hypoxanthine. With the H2O2 from xanthine oxidase (XOD)-catalyzed reactions of hypoxanthine, the fluorescence of UCNPs was effectively quenched by the purple product produced from the oxidization of TOPS/4-AAP catalyzed by Co3O4 NPs exhibiting peroxidase activity, among which the color change could be transformed into digital signals for quantification of hypoxanthine. The Green value in the RGB analysis of the fluorescence image was negatively proportional to hypoxanthine concentration in the range of 2.5-20 mg/L with a detection limit of 0.69 mg/L and a quantitation limit of 2.30 mg/L. Finally, this sensor was applied for hypoxanthine detection in real aquatic products, showing potential application for freshness evaluation of aquatic products.

A smartphone-assisted fluorescent sensing platform for ochratoxin A using Mn-doped CsPbBr3 perovskite quantum dots embedded in the mesoporous silica as a ratiometric probe

Food sources are susceptible to contamination with ochratoxin A (OTA), which is a serious threat to human health. Thus, the construction of novel, simple sensing platforms for OTA monitoring is of utmost need. Manganese-doped lead halide perovskite quantum dots encapsulated with mesoporous SiO2 (Mn-CsPbBr3 QDs@SiO2) were prepared here and used as a ratiometric fluorescent probe for OTA. Mn-CsPbBr3 QDs, synthesized at room temperature, exhibit dual emission with maximum wavelengths of 440 and 570 nm and, when embedded in the SiO2 layer, produce a stable and robust photoluminescence signal. By adding OTA to the probe, emission at 440 nm increases while emission at 570 nm decreases, so a ratiometric response is obtained. Experimental variables affecting the probe signal were studied and optimized and the mechanism of sensing was discussed. This ratiometric sensor demonstrated excellent selectivity and low detection limit (4.1 ng/ml) as well as a wide linear range from 5.0 to 250 ng/ml for OTA. A simple portable smartphone-based device was also constructed and applied for the fluorescence assay. With different OTA concentrations, the multicolor transition from pink to blue under a UV lamp led to simple visual and smartphone-assisted sensing of OTA by using a color analyzing application. Satisfactory recoveries in black tea, coffee, moldy fig and flour samples confirmed the reliability of the assay. The accuracy of the probe was proved by comparison of the results with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Recent advancements in modifications of metal-organic frameworks-based materials for enhanced water purification and contaminant detection

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a key focus in water treatment and monitoring due to their unique structural features, including extensive surface area, customizable porosity, reversible adsorption, and high catalytic efficiency. While numerous reviews have discussed MOFs in environmental remediation, this review specifically addresses recent advancements in modifying MOFs to enhance their effectiveness in water purification and monitoring. It underscores their roles as adsorbents, photocatalysts, and in luminescent and electrochemical sensing. Advancements such as pore modification, defect engineering, and functionalization, combined synergistically with advanced materials, have led to the development of recyclable MOF-based nano-adsorbents, Z-scheme photocatalytic systems, nanocomposites, and hybrid materials. These innovations have broadened the spectrum of removable contaminants and improved material recyclability. Additionally, this review delves into the creation of multifunctional MOF materials, the development of robust MOF variants, and the simplification of synthesis methods, marking significant progress in MOF sensor technology. Furthermore, the review addresses current challenges in this field and proposes potential future research directions and practical applications. The growing research interest in MOFs underscores the need for an updated synthesis of knowledge in this area, focusing on both current challenges and future opportunities in water remediation.

Polyacrylamide/sodium alginate/sodium chloride photochromic hydrogel with high conductivity, anti-freezing property and fast response for information storage and electronic skin

Photochromic hydrogels have promising prospects in areas such as wearable device, information encryption technology, optoelectronic display technology, and electronic skin. However, there are strict requirements for the properties of photochromic hydrogels in practical engineering applications, especially in some extreme application environments. The preparation of photochromic hydrogels with high transparency, high toughness, fast response, colour reversibility, excellent electrical conductivity, and anti-freezing property remains a challenge. In this study, a novel photochromic hydrogel (PAAm/SA/NaCl-Mo7) was prepared by loading ammonium molybdate (Mo7) and sodium chloride (NaCl) into a dual-network hydrogel of polyacrylamide (PAAm) and sodium alginate (SA) using a simple one-pot method. PAAm/SA/NaCl-Mo7 hydrogel has excellent conductivity (175.9 S/cm), water retention capacity and anti-freezing properties, which can work normally at a low temperature of -28.4 °C. In addition, the prepared PAAm/SA/NaCl-Mo7 hydrogel exhibits fast response (<15 s), high transparency (>70 %), good toughness (maximum elongation up to 1500 %), good cyclic compression properties at high compressive strains (60 %), good biocompatibility (78.5 %), stable reversible discolouration and excellent sensing properties, which can be used for photoelectric display, information storage and motion monitoring. This work provides a new inspiration for the development of flexible electronic skin devices.

Self-adhesive, conductive, and multifunctional hybrid hydrogel for flexible/wearable electronics based on triboelectric and piezoresistive sensor

Flexible electronics are highly developed nowadays in human-machine interfaces (HMI). However, challenges such as lack of flexibility, conductivity, and versatility always greatly hindered flexible electronics applications. In this work, a multifunctional hybrid hydrogel (H-hydrogel) was prepared by combining two kinds of 1D polymer chains (polyacrylamide and polydopamine) and two kinds of 2D nanosheets (Ti3C2Tx MXene and graphene oxide nanosheets) as quadruple crosslinkers. The introduced Ti3C2Tx MXene and graphene oxide nanosheets are bonded with the PAM and PDA polymer chains by hydrogen bonds. This unique crosslinking and stable structure endow the H-hydrogel with advantages such as good flexibility, electrical conductivity, self-adhesion, and mechanical robustness. The two kinds of nanosheets not only improved the mechanical strength and conductivity of the H-hydrogel, but also helped to form the double electric layers (DELs) between the nanosheets and the bulk-free water phase inside the H-hydrogel. When utilized as the electrode of a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), high electrical output performances were realized due to the dynamic balance of the DELs between the nanosheets and the H-hydrogel's inside water molecules. Moreover, flexible sensors, including triboelectric, and strain/pressure sensors, were achieved for human motion detection at low frequencies. This hydrogel is promising for HMI and e-skin.

A smartphone-assisted sensing hydrogels based on UCNPs@SiO2-phenol red nanoprobes for detecting the pH of aquatic products

For some aquatic products, pH has been considered a useful index to reflect the changes in materials during the loss of freshness. Based on the inner filter effect (IFE) between deprotonated phenol red (PR) and upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), UCNPs coated with PR-doped SiO2 shell were embedded in agarose hydrogel to develop a smartphone-assisted method for pH sensing. With the enhancement of pH response using a phase transfer agent (i.e., tetra butyl ammonium hydroxide, TBAH), the proposed senor realized the colorimetric and fluorescence detection of pH in the range of pH 6.6-8 and pH 6-8, respectively. The sensor also showed satisfied reversibility when switched between pH 6 and 8 for at least 5 cycles. Moreover, this sensor displayed great sensitivity, stability, and portability in analyzing actual fish, shrimp, and shellfish samples, providing a new sight for evaluating the freshness of aquatic products.

Beyond HbA1c: Identifying Gaps in Glycemic Control Among Children and Young People with Type 1 Diabetes Using Continuous Glucose Monitoring

OBJECTIVES

To describe continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) derived glycemic variables, and study their association with HbA1c and socio-economic factors in young people with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM).

METHODS

Ninety-two participants [age 15.7 ± 5.0 y (mean ± SD), HbA1c 8.0 ± 1.5% (mean ± SD)] wore a professional CGM sensor for 14 d.

RESULTS

Median (IQR) time in range (TIR) was 41 (18)%. Participants spent 41 ± 20% of their day in hyperglycemia (>180 mg/dl), and 14 (13)% in hypoglycemia (<70 mg/dl). High glycemic variability (percent CV >36%) was seen in 92% participants. Older age at diagnosis was associated with higher TIR (β = 0.267, p = 0.01), lower time above range (TAR) (β = -0.352, p <0.001), but higher time below range (TBR) (β = 0.274, p = 0.006). The use of NPH vs. glargine basal insulin was associated with higher TBR (β = -0.262, p = 0.009) but lower TAR (β = 0.202, p = 0.041). HbA1c showed negative correlation with TIR (r = -0.449, p <0.001) and TBR (r = -0.466, p <0.001) and positive correlation with TAR (r = 0.580, p <0.001) and mean glucose (r = 0.589, p <0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

These data demonstrate wide gaps between the recommended vs. real world glycemic variables in patients with T1DM in this region on multiple daily insulin injections. CGM identifies glycemic variability and complements HbA1c in improving glycemic control.

Copper-crosslinked carbon dot hydrogel nanozyme for colorimetric - tert-butylhydroquinone biosensing and smartphone-assisted visual ratiometric assay

Due to the potential environment and health risks of tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), rapid, portable, selective and sensitive quantification of TBHQ in food and the environment are strictly essential. With this in mind, a selective, sensitive and rapid colorimetric TBHQ biosensor was developed using rationally designed copper-crosslinked carbon dot hydrogel nanozyme (BC-CDs@Cu). The BC-CDs@Cu had a high peroxidase-like activity toward the chromogenic reaction of hydrogen peroxide with dopamine via the generation of hydroxyl radicals and electron transfer process. The Michaelis-Menten constants of BC-CDs@Cu for dopamine and hydrogen peroxide were determined to be 0.86 and 0.91 mM. The added TBHQ markedly inhibited the BC-CDs@Cu-catalyzed dopamine oxidation by hydrogen peroxide, ascribing to the highly effective and rapid scavenging of hydroxyl radicals and the suppression of electron transfer. The inhibitory extent was applied for well quantifying TBHQ in the range of 0.5 - 20.0 μM with a detection limit of 70 nM. The proposed biosensor had a negligible response to various interfering substances. Moreover, a smartphone-assisted visual ratiometric biosensor was fabricated, and used to accomplish portable quantification of TBHQ in edible oils and water samples. This work reveals the enormous potential of hydrogel nanozyme, which will open a new situation for the detection of hazardous substances.

Necklace-like Te-Au reticula platform with three dimensional hotspots Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) sensor for food hazards analysis

In this work, we combined three-dimensional (3D) necklace-like Te-Au reticula as novel surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active substrates with oxidation-reduction displacement reactions to construct a molecular machine for SERS detection. The structurally tunable 3D necklace-like spatial structures generated more active 'hot spots' and thus enhanced the sensitivity of SERS signals. Besides, layers of ultrathin nanowires showed high sequence dependence that ensure the repeatability and abundant hotspots at interparticle gaps and guarantee the high SERS performance of the substrate. A better-localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of the sensor was verified by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) analysis in both Raman intensities and electromagnetic field distributions compared to the citrate-stabilized AuNPs and CTAB-protected AuNRs. The proposed strategy can also serve as a universally amplified and sensitive detection platform for monitoring different molecules, thus achieving an amplification detection of 3,3'-diethylthiatricarbocyanine iodide (DTTCI) are 1 nM and R6G with a low limit of detection of 1 pM. Especially, the intensity of the main vibration of R6G from 30 spots of SERS data with excellent reproducibility (relative standard deviation of 6.25 %). High selectivity and accuracy of the SERS sensor were proved by practical analysis melamine (MM) in milk with a linear calibration curve (R2 = 0.9962) and a limit of detection of 0.75 mg/kg. Our research provides a new perspective to construct 3D SERS sensor from integrated structural design.

Indium nanocubes based recyclable fluorescent chemosensor for sustainable environmental monitoring: pH-induced fluorescence transition and selective detection of Pd(II) ions

Rapid modern industrialization and urbanization have escalated heavy metal pollution, with palladium (Pd2+) raising significant concerns due to its extensive usage in catalysis, hydrogen storage, and electronics, thereby imposing substantial risks on the environment and human health. In this study, we report a highly fluorescent indium nanocubes based chemosensor (InNCs) functionalized with perylene tetracarboxylic acid (PTCA) and 4-(pyridyl)ethenyl benzene (PEB). The InNCs exhibited emission maximum at 415 nm (λex ∼ 350 nm) with robust chemical and photo-stability, and acted as a fluorogenic probe for selective recognition of Pd2+ in aqueous medium. The fluorescence sensing properties of InNCs were thoroughly assessed via different techniques including steady-state absorption, emission and time-resolved emission spectroscopic methods. Among the various competitive analytes, only Pd2+ could induce a significant fluorescence quenching in the probe. This "turn-off" fluorescence sensing demonstrated a remarkably low LoD of ∼65 nM. Notably, with the addition of EDTA, the probe displayed good recyclability upto 4 cycles. The sensory probe was successfully employed as a reusable platform to estimate Pd(II) in different real water and soil samples with considerable accuracy (∼ 5-10 % error). Moreover, the probe exhibited a pH-induced fluorescence transition, indicating its potential to be applied as a pH sensor. The Pd(II) binding and pH-sensing mechanisms have also been elucidated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Electrochemical determination of fenitrothion pesticide based on ultrathin manganese oxide nanowires/molybdenum titanium carbide MXene ionic nanocomposite and molecularly imprinting polymer

A novel molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor is presented based on one-dimensional ultrathin manganese oxide nanowires/two-dimensional molybdenum titanium carbide MXene (MnO2NWs@Mo2TiC2 MXene) for fenitrothion (FEN) determination. After the synthesis of MnO2NWs@Mo2TiC2 MXene ionic nanocomposite was successfully completed with a facile hydrothermal and the pillaring methods, a new type molecular imprinted electrochemical sensor based on MnO2NWs@Mo2TiC2 MXene was constructed with cyclic voltammetry (CV) polymerization including pyrrole monomer and FEN target molecule. After the characterization studies including spectroscopic, electrochemical and microscopic methods, the analytical applications of the prepared sensor were performed. A linearity of 1.0×10-9-2.0×10-8 mol L-1 was obtained and the values of the quantification limit (LOQ) and the detection limit (LOD) were 1.0×10-9 mol L-1 and 3.0×10-10 mol L-1, respectively. The studies of selectivity, stability and reproducibility of the constructed sensor based on MnO2NWs@Mo2TiC2 nanocomposite and molecularly imprinting polymer (MIP) were carried out in detail. Finally, the developed sensor was applied to white flour samples with the values close to 100%.

Characterization of Surgical Movements As a Training Tool for Improving Efficiency

INTRODUCTION

Surgical experience is often reflected by efficient, fluid, and well-calculated movements. For a new trainee, learning these characteristics is possible only by observation as there is no quantification system to define these factors. We analyzed surgeons' hand movements with different experience levels to characterize their movements according to experience.

METHODS

Hand motions were recorded by an inertial measurement unit (IMU) mounted on the hands of the surgeons during a simulated surgical procedure. IMU data provided acceleration and Eulerian angles: yaw, roll, and pitch corresponding to hand motions as radial/ulnar deviation, pronation/supination, and extension/flexion, respectively. These variables were graphically depicted and compared between three surgeons.

RESULTS

Participants were assigned to three groups based on years of surgical experience: group 1: >15 y; group 2: 3-10 y; and group 3: 0-1 y. Visualization of the roll motion, being the main motion during suturing, showed the clear difference in fluidity and regularity of the movements between the groups, showing minimal wasted movements for group 1. The angle of the roll motion, measured at the minimum, midpoint, and maximum points was significantly different between the groups. As expected, the experienced group completed the procedure first; however, the acceleration was not different between the groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Surgeons' hand movements can be easily characterized and quantified by an IMU device for automatic assessment of surgical skills. These characteristics graphically visualize a surgeon's regularity, fluidity, economy, and efficiency. The characteristics of an experienced surgeon can serve as a training model and as a reference tool for trainees.

Self-healing and adhesive MXene-polypyrrole/silk fibroin/polyvinyl alcohol conductive hydrogels as wearable sensor

Conductive hydrogels become increasing attractive for flexible electronic devices and biosensors. However, challenges still remain in fabrication of flexible hydrogels with high electrical conductivity, self-healing capability and adhesion property. Herein, a conductive hydrogel (PSDM) was prepared by solution-gel method using MXene and dopamine modified polypyrrole as conductive enhanced materials, polyvinyl alcohol and silk fibroin as gel networks, and borax as cross-linking agent. Notably, the PSDM hydrogels not only showed high permeability (13.82 mg∙cm-2∙h-1), excellent stretch ability (1235 %), high electrical conductivity (11.3 S/m) and long-term stability, but also exhibited high adhesion performance and self-healing properties. PSDM hydrogels displayed outstanding sensing performance and durability for monitoring human activities including writing, finger bending and wrist bending. The PSDM hydrogel was made into wearable flexible electrodes and realized accurate, sensitive and reliable detection of human electromyographic and electrocardiographic signals. The sensor was also applied in human-computer interaction by collecting electromyography signals of different gestures for machine learning and gesture recognition. According to 480 groups of data collected, the recognition accuracy of gestures by the electrodes was close to 100 %, indicating that the PSDM hydrogel electrodes possessed excellent sensing performance for high precision data acquisition and human-computer interaction interface.

Cellulose-reinforced highly stretchable and adhesive eutectogels as efficient sensors

A cellulose-reinforced eutectogel was constructed by deep eutectic solvent (DES) and cotton linter cellulose. Cellulose was dispersed in the ternary DES consisting of acrylic acid, choline chloride and AlCl3·6H2O. The photoinitiator was then introduced into the system to in situ polymerize acrylic acid monomer to form transparent and ionic conductive eutectogels while keeping all the DES. The crosslinks formed by Al3+ induced ionic bonds and reversible links formed by hydrogen bonds give the eutectogels high stretchability (3200 ± 200 % tensile strain), self-adhesive (52.1 kPa to glass), self-healing and good mechanical strength (670 kPa). The eutectogels were assembled into sensors and epidermal patch electrodes that demonstrated high quality human motion sensing and physiological signal detection (electrocardiogram and electromyography). This work provides a facile way to design flexible electronics for sensing.

The sensor applications for prostate and lung cancer biomarkers in terms of electrochemical analysis

Prostate and lung cancers are the most common types of cancer and affect a large part of the population around the world, causing deaths. Therefore, the rapid identification of cancer can profoundly impact reducing cancer-related death rates and protecting human lives. Significant resources have been dedicated to investigating new methods for early disease detection. Cancer biomarkers encompass various biochemical entities, including nucleic acids, proteins, sugars, small metabolites, cytogenetic and cytokinetic parameters, and whole tumor cells in bodily fluids. These tools can be utilized for various purposes, such as risk assessment, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment efficacy, toxicity evaluation, and predicting a return. Due to these versatile and critical purposes, there are widespread studies on the development of new, sensitive, and selective approaches for the determination of cancer biomarkers. This review illustrates the significant lung and prostate cancer biomarkers and their determination utilizing electrochemical sensors, which have the advantage of improved sensitivity, low cost, and simple analysis. Additionally, approaches such as improving sensitivity with nanomaterials and ensuring selectivity with MIPs are used to increase the performance of the sensor. This review aims to overview the most recent electrochemical biosensor applications for determining vital biomarkers of prostate and lung cancers in terms of nanobiosensors and molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based biosensors.

Rigidifying AIEgens in covalent organic framework nanosheets for electrochemiluminescence enhancement: TABE-PZ-CON as a novel emitter for microRNA-21 detection

Enhancing electrochemiluminescence (ECL) properties of luminophores is a hot direction in the current ECL field. Herein, we found that covalent rigidification of the aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) TABE (TABE = tetra-(4-aldehyde-(1,1-biphenyl))ethylene) into covalent organic framework nanosheets (TABE-PZ-CON, PZ = piperazine) could result in stronger ECL emission than those of TABE aggregates and TABE monomers. We termed the interesting phenomenon "covalent rigidification-triggered electrochemiluminescence (CRT-ECL) enhancement". The superior ECL performance of TABE-PZ-CON not only because massive TABE luminogens were covalently assembled into the rigid TABE-PZ-CON network, which limited the intramolecular motions of TABE and hampered the radiationless transition, but also because the ultrathin porous TABE-PZ-CON significantly reduced the transportation distance of ions, electrons, and coreactants, which enabled the electrochemical excitation of more TABE luminogens and thus enhanced the ECL efficiency. Bearing in mind the exceptional ECL performance of TABE-PZ-CON, it was utilized as a high-efficient ECL indicator in combination with the DNA walker and duplex-specific nuclease-assisted target recycling amplification strategies to design an "off-on" ECL biosensor for the ultrasensitive assay of microRNA-21, exhibiting a favorable response range (100 aM-1 nM) with an ultralow detection limit of 17.9 aM. Overall, this work offers a valid way to inhibit the intramolecular motions of AIEgens for ECL enhancement, which gives a new vision for building high-performance AIEgen-based ECL materials, thus offering more chances for assembling hypersensitive ECL biosensors.

Fluorescence enhancing and quenching signal based on new approach for selective detection of multiple organochlorine pesticides using blue emissive-carbon dot

Measuring the concentration of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in agriculture has engaged significant awareness for healthcare investigation since OCPs are harmful to many physiological processes. Excessive usage of these compounds can result in major contamination of the environment and food supply chains. As a result, more accurate and rapid ways to detect pesticide residues in food are required. In this work, we have portrayed the surface-engineered fluorescent blue emissive-carbon dot (B-CD) with a high quantum yield (49.3 %) via the hydrothermal method for fluorescent sensing of OCPs on real samples. The amine group functionalities of carbon dots have supported the direct coordination with -Cl and -OH groups of HEP, ENS, CDF and 2,4-DPAC for the sensitive detection of OCPs, by switching in the fluorescent intensity of B-CD. The functional group of OCPs exhibits a variety of binding interactions with B-CD to contribute a complex formation, which leads to static quenching via an insubstantial restricted electron transfer process. The synthesized carbon dots exhibit individuality in binding nature towards different OCPs. Fluorescence studies help to distinguish the target OCPs and their low detection limits (LODs) were 0.002, 0.099, 0.16 and 0.082 μM for Heptachlor (HEP - turn "on"), Endosulfan (ENS), Chlordimeform (CDF) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-DPAC - turn "off") OCPs respectively. The real water samples and agriculture food samples were effectively investigated and the OCP toxicity was noted. Thus, the design of the fluorescence sensor is established as an easy and proficient sensing method for detecting OCPs.

Highly sensitive and simultaneous detection of ascorbic acid, dopamine, and uric acid using Pt@g-C3N4/N-CNTs nanocomposites

The detection of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), and uric acid (UA) is crucial for understanding and managing various illnesses. In this research, Pt@g-C3N4 nanoparticles were synthesized via hydrothermal method and combined with N-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs). The Pt@g-C3N4/N-CNTs-modified glassy carbon (GC) electrode was fabricated as an electrochemical sensor for the determination of AA, DA, and UA. The linear response range of AA, DA, and UA in the optimal condition was 100-3,000 μM, 1-100 μM, and 2-215 μM boasting a low detection limit (S/N = 3) of 29.44 μM (AA), 0.21 μM (UA), and 2.99 μM (DA), respectively. Additionally, the recoveries of AA, DA, and UA in serum sample were 100.4%-106.7%. These results corroborate the feasibility of the proposed method for the simultaneous, sensitive, and reliable detection of AA, DA, and UA. Our Pt@g-C3N4/N-CNTs/GC electrode can provide a potential strategy for disease diagnosis and health monitoring in clinical settings.

Cross enclosed square split ring resonator based on D.N.G. metamaterial absorber for X-band glucose sensing application

This article presents a novel real-time meta-material (MM) sensor based on a non-invasive method that operates in microwave frequency ranges at 8.524 GHz to measure blood glucose levels with quality factor 184 is designed and fabricated. A cross enclosed between two square shapes produces a strong interaction between glucose samples and electromagnetic waves. In this study, 5 were tested noninvasively using the proposed glucose resonant sensor with a range of glucose-level changes from 50 to 130 mg/dL. For this range of glucose-level changes, the frequency detection resolution is 5.06 MHz/(mg/dL), respectively. Despite simulations, fabrication procedures (F.P.) have been carried out for more precise result verification. For the purpose of qualitative analysis, the proposed MM sensor is considered a viable candidate for determining glucose levels.

Ratiometric Fluorescence and Chromogenic Probe for Trace Detection of Selected Transition Metals

The design and development of a fluorescence sensor aimed at detecting and quantifying trace amounts of toxic transition metal ions within environmental, biological, and aquatic samples has garnered significant attention from diagnostic and testing laboratories, driven by the imperative to mitigate the health risks associated with these contaminants. In this context, we present the utilization of a heterocyclic symmetrical Schiff Base derivative for the purpose of fluorogenic and chromogenic detection of Co2+, Cu2+ and Hg2+ ions. The characterization of the ligand involved a comprehensive array of techniques, including physical assessments, optical analyses, NMR, FT-IR, and mass spectrometric examinations. The mechanism of ligand-metal complexation was elucidated through the utilization of photophysical parameters and FT-IR spectroscopic analysis, both before and after the interaction between the ligand and the metal salt solution. The pronounced alterations observed in absorption and fluorescence spectra, along with the distinctive chromogenic changes, following treatment with Co2+, Cu2+ and Hg2+, affirm the successful formation of complexes between the ligands and the treated metal ions. Notably, the receptor's complexation response exhibited selectivity towards Co(II), Cu(II), and Hg(II), with no observed chromogenic changes, spectral variations, or band shifts for the various tested metal ions, including Na+, Ag+, Ni2+, Mn2+, Pd2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, Sn2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Cr3+ and Al3+. This absence of interaction between these metal ions and the ligand could be attributed to their compact or inadequately conducive conduction bands for complexation with the ligand's structural composition. To quantify the sensor's efficacy, fluorescence titration spectra were employed to determine the detection limits for Co2+, Cu2+ and Hg2+, yielding values of 2.92 × 10-8, 8.91 × 10-8, and 4.39 × 10-3 M, respectively. The Benesi-Hildebrand plots provided association constant values for the ligand-cobalt, ligand-copper, and ligand-mercury complexes as 0.74, 2.52, and 13.89 M-1, respectively.

Rapid fabricated in-situ polymerized lignin hydrogel sensor with highly adjustable mechanical properties

Conductive hydrogels have been widely used as sensors owing to their tissue-like properties. However, the synthesis of conductive hydrogels with highly adjustable mechanical properties and multiple functions remains difficult to achieve yet highly needed. In this study, lignin hydrogel characterized by frost resistance, UV resistance, high conductivity, and highly adjustable mechanical properties without forming by-products was prepared through a rapid in-situ polymerization of acrylic acid/zinc chloride (AA/ZnCl2) aqueous solution containing lignin extract induced by the reversible quinone-catechol redox of the ZnCl2-lignin system at room temperature. Results revealed that the PAA/ZnCl2/lignin hydrogel exhibited mechanical properties with tensile stress (ranging from 0.08 to 3.28 MPa), adhesion to multiple surfaces (up to 62.05 J m-2), excellent frost resistance (-70-20 °C), UV resistance, and conductivity (0.967 S m-1), which further endow the hydrogel as potential strain and temperature sensor with wide monitor range (0-300 %), fatigue resistance, and quick response (70 ms for 150 % strain). This study proposed and developed a green, simple, economical, and efficient processing method for a hydrogel sensor in flexible wearable devices and man-machine interaction fields.

DNA aptamer-linked sandwich structure enhanced SPRi sensor for rapid, sensitive, and quantitative detection of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein

The harm and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted the importance of fast, sensitive, and cost-effective virus detection methods. In this study, we developed a DNA aptamer sensor using nanoparticle-enhanced surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi) technology to achieve efficient labeling-free detection of SARS-CoV-2 S protein. We used the same DNA aptamer to modify the surface of the SPRi sensor chip and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), respectively, for capturing target analytes and amplifying signals, achieving ideal results while greatly reducing costs and simplifying the preparation process. The SPRi sensing method exhibits a good linear relationship (R2 = 0.9926) in the concentration range of 1-20 nM before adding AuNPs to amplify the signal, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.32 nM. After amplifying the signal, there is a good linear relationship (R2 = 0.9829) between the concentration range of 25-1000 pM, with a LOD of 5.99 pM. The simulation results also verified the effectiveness of AuNPs in improving SPRi signal response. The SPRi sensor has the advantage of short detection time and can complete the detection within 10 min. In addition, the specificity and repeatability of this method can achieve excellent results. This is the first study to simultaneously capture a viral marker protein and amplify the signal using polyadenylic acid (polyA)-modified DNA aptamers on the SPR platform. This scheme can be used as a fast and inexpensive detection method for diagnosis at the point of care (POC) to combat current and future epidemics caused by the virus.

Advances in ionic liquids as fluorescent sensors

Ionic liquids (ILs) are a class of liquid salts with characteristics such as a low melting point, an ionic nature, non-volatility, and tunable properties. Because of their adaptability, they have a significant influence in the field of fluorescence. This paper reviews the primary literature on the use of ILs in fluorescence sensing technologies. The kind of target material is utilized to classify the fluorescence sensors made with the use of ILs. They include using ILs as probes for metals, nitro explosives, small organic compounds, anions, and gases. The efficacy of an IL-based fluorescence sensor depends on the precise design to guarantee specificity, sensitivity, and a consistent reaction to the desired analyte. The precise method can differ depending on the chemical properties of the IL, the choice of fluorophore, and the interactions with the analyte. Overall, the viability of the aforementioned materials for chemical analysis is evaluated, and prospective possibilities for further development are identified.

Associations between performance-based and patient-reported physical functioning and real-world mobile sensor metrics in older cancer survivors: A pilot study

INTRODUCTION

Older cancer survivors are at increased risk for impaired physical functioning, but current assessments of function are difficult to implement in busy oncology clinics. Mobile devices measuring continuous activity and mobility in daily life may be useful for estimating physical functioning. The goal of this pilot study was to examine the associations between consumer wearable device (a wrist-worn activity tracker) and smartphone sensor data and commonly used clinical measures of physical function in cancer survivors aged 65 and older.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Older adults within five years of completing primary treatment for any cancer completed standardized questionnaires and performance-based tests to measure physical functioning. Continuous passive data from smartphones and consumer wearable devices were collected for four weeks and linked to patient-reported and performance-based physical functioning as well as patient-reported falls or near falls at the end of the four-week monitoring period. To examine associations between sensor variables and physical functioning, we conducted bivariate Pearson correlations as well as multivariable linear regression analyses. To examine associations between sensor variables and falls, we conducted exploratory receiver operating characteristic curve and multivariable logistic regression analyses.

RESULTS

We enrolled 40 participants (mean age 73 years old, range 65-83; 98% White; 50% female). In bivariate analyses, consumer wearable device features reflecting greater amount and speed and lower fragmentation of walking in daily life were significantly related to better patient-reported function (r= 0.43-0.65) and performance-based physical function (r = 0.56-0.72), while smartphone features reflecting more geographic mobility were related to better performance-based physical function (r = 0.40-0.42) but not patient-reported function. After adjusting for age and comorbidities, only consumer wearable device features remained associated with performance-based physical functioning. In exploratory analyses, peak gait cadence was associated with fall risk even after covariate adjustment.

DISCUSSION

This study provides preliminary evidence that real-world data from consumer devices may be useful for estimating functional performance among older cancer survivors and potentially for remotely and longitudinally monitoring functioning in older patients during and after cancer treatment.

A review on the chemical and biological sensing applications of silver/carbon dots nanocomposites with their interaction mechanisms

The development of new nanocomposites has a significant impact on modern instrumentation and analytical methods for chemical analysis. Due to their unique properties, carbon dots (CDs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), distinguished by their unique physical, electrochemical, and optical properties, have captivated significant attention. Thus, combining AgNPs and CDs may produce Ag/CDs nanocomposites with improved performances than the individual material. This comprehensive review offers an in-depth exploration of the synthesis, formation mechanism, properties, and the recent surge in chemical and biological sensing applications of Ag/CDs with their sensing mechanisms. Detailed insights into synthesis methods to produce Ag/CDs are unveiled, followed by information on their physicochemical and optical properties. The crux of this review lies in its spotlight on the diverse landscape of chemical and biological sensing applications of Ag/CDs, with a particular focus on fluorescence, electrochemical, colorimetric, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and surface plasmon resonance sensing techniques. The elucidation of sensing mechanisms of the nanocomposites with various target analytes adds depth to the discussion. Finally, this review culminates with a concise summary and a glimpse into future perspectives of Ag/CDs aiming to achieve highly efficient and enduring Ag/CDs for various applications.

Smart and emerging point of care electrochemical sensors based on nanomaterials for SARS-CoV-2 virus detection: Towards designing a future rapid diagnostic tool

In the recent years, researchers from all over the world have become interested in the fabrication of advanced and innovative electrochemical and/or biosensors for respiratory virus detection with the use of nanotechnology. These fabricated sensors demonstrated a number of benefits, including precision, affordability, accessibility, and miniaturization which makes them a promising test method for point-of-care (PoC) screening for SARS-CoV-2 viral infection. In order to comprehend the principles of electrochemical sensing and the role of various types of sensing interfaces, we comprehensively explored the underlying principles of electroanalytical methods and terminologies related to it in this review. In addition, it is addressed how to fabricate electrochemical sensing devices incorporating nanomaterials as graphene, metal/metal oxides, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), MXenes, quantum dots, and polymers. We took an effort to carefully compile current developments, advantages, drawbacks, possible solutions in nanomaterials based electrochemical sensors.

The reliability and validity of a novel wearable inertial sensor to measure the cervical proprioception

BACKGROUND

Proprioceptive function assessment is crucial in clinical practice for patients with chronic non-specific neck pain (CNNP) as it is a major issue affecting their condition.

PURPOSE

To verify the reliability and validity of baiobit sensor in measuring the neck proprioceptive function of CNNP patients.

METHODS

Fifty-three CNNP patients were recruited (36 females, 17 males; age range 21-60 years) and were assessed for cervical joint position error by two blinded raters using the Baiobit sensor and laser pointer devices. The second measurement was conducted by the same rater 48 h later. Intra and inter-rater reliability of the Baiobit sensor was evaluated using the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC), while the validity of the Baiobit sensor was established using the Spearman correlation coefficient.

RESULTS

The Baiobit sensor demonstrated moderate to excellent intra-rater reliability in flexion, extension, left lateral flexion, right lateral flexion, and right rotation (ICCs=0.71∼0.85, 95 %CIs: 0.50∼0.91), left-rotation shows poor to good intra-rater reliability (ICC=0.56, 95 %CI: 0.25∼0.75). The Baiobit sensor also demonstrated moderate to excellent inter-rater reliability in flexion, extension, left lateral flexion, right lateral flexion, and right rotation (ICCs=0.80∼0.88, 95 %CIs: 0.65∼0.91), left-rotation shows poor to good intra-rater reliability (ICC=0.59, 95 %CI: 0.29∼0.76). Validity analysis showed that the Baiobit sensor had a range of low to high validity (r = 0.46∼0.88) for measuring cervical proprioception function, with lower validity observed in the left flexion direction. The Baiobit showed good absolute reliability with low SEM and MDC90 values (0.35°∼2.42°).

CONCLUSION

The new device could be used as an alternative tool to evaluate neck proprioception.

Superoxide dismutase-like cerium dioxide hollow sphere-based highly specific photoelectrochemical biosensing for ascorbic acid

Conventional N-type semiconductor-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors are difficult to achieve high selectivity for ascorbic acid (AA) detection in real samples because co-existing reducing agents act as hole sacrificial agents like AA to promote the increase of photocurrent. Cerium dioxide (CeO2) is a superoxide dismutase-like nanozyme with the reversible Ce3+/Ce4+ redox pair as well as one of alternative N-type semiconductors. To address the problem of PEC detection selectivity of AA, bifunctional CeO2 is a good choice. Herein, a novel and rational PEC biosensor for AA is constructed based on CeO2 hollow spheres as both AA superoxide dismutase-like nanozyme and the photoelectric beacon, which enable the PEC approach with high selectivity. In this protocol, AA can selectively induce a decrease in the CeO2-based photoanode current, which is significantly different from the conventional N-type semiconductor-based PEC sensor, this unique working mechanism is also proposed. The results show that the CeO2-based photocurrent response decreases linearly with AA concentrations in the ranges of 1 μM-600 μM and 600 μM-3000 μM, with a limit of detection of 0.33 μM. Moreover, the fabricated PEC biosensor has advantages of cost-effectiveness, replicability, and stability. Additionally, the sensor is competent for AA determination in practical settings and has achieved satisfactory results.

Optimal fabrication of a thin-film thermocouple (TFTC) using Alumel/chromel junctions

Thin-film thermocouple (TFTC) technology is a novel measurement method that produces a thermocouple sensor during the deposition process, even though it is a complex surface, to obtain the surface temperature. TFTC is a thin film sensor for measuring temperature by contact methods, consisting of two different metals which can generate thermoelectric forces named "Seebeck effects". In the past decade there have been many attempts to measure the cutting temperature during machining processes using TFTF sensors. However, research has not yet progressed to optimize the sensor performance or fabrication process. This paper studies a preliminary technique for the fabrication of a TFTC sensor on a cutting tool surface and optimizes the deposition conditions, TFTC design, and sensor performance. Chromel and Alumel, which are materials commonly used in K-type thermocouples, were used for the thermal evaporation process. When the Chromel has a nickel to chrome ratio of 9:1, low resistivity and minimal variation with increasing temperature were observed. When the contact area of the deposited electrode (+) and (-) poles increased, the resistivity decreased and the TFTC sensitivity improved. Data acquisition tests using a DAQ system connected to the TFTC sensor show the lowest resistivity in TFTC B and C types are able to measure temperature data. It is expected that the heat generated during the cutting process can be detected using the TFTC sensor with B-type shape and Chromel with a 9:1 nickel to chrome ratio.

triact package for R: analyzing the lying behavior of cows from accelerometer data

Accelerometers are sensors proven to be useful to analyze the lying behavior of cows. For reasons of algorithm transparency and control, researchers often prefer to use their own data analysis scripts rather than proprietary software. We developed the triact R package that assists animal scientists in analyzing the lying behavior of cows from raw data recorded with a triaxial accelerometer (manufacturer agnostic) attached to a hind leg. In a user-friendly workflow, triact allows the determination of common measures for lying behavior including total lying duration, the number of lying bouts, and the mean duration of lying bouts. Further capabilities are the description of lying laterality and the calculation of proxies for the level of physical activity of the cow. In this publication we describe the functionality of triact and the rationales behind the implemented algorithms. The triact R package is developed as an open-source project and freely available via the CRAN repository.

Recent Development on Copper-Sensor and its Biological Applications: A Review

Metal ion recognition is one of the most prospective research topics in the field of chemical sensors due to its wide range of clinical, biological and environmental applications. In this context, hydrazones are well known compounds that exhibit metal sensing and several biological properties due to the presence of N=CH- bond. Some of the biological properties includes anti-cancer, anti-tumor, anti-oxidant, anti-microbial activities. Hydrazones are also used as a ligand to detect metal ion as well as to generate metal complexes that exhibit medicinal properties. Thus, in recent years, many attempts were made to develop novel ligands with enhanced metal sensing and medicinal properties. In this review, some of the recent development on the hydrazones and their copper complexes are covered from the last few years from 2015-2023. These includes significance of copper ions, synthesis, biological properties, mechanism and metal sensing properties of some of the copper complexes were discussed.

Synthesis of Fluorescent Pyrazoline Sensors as Versatile Tool for Zinc ion Detection: A Mini-Review

Zinc ions are one of the 2nd most abundant mineral after iron and it is important for immune system, enzymatic catalysis, DNA synthesis, and maintaining structural integrity in humans. But, monitoring the Zn levels in human body poses more challenges. This review paper investigates (paper from 2010 to 2023) the synthesis of pyrazoline derivatives by different methods, including conventional methods and green chemistry protocol. These Pyrazoline derivatives highlighted for their potential application as chemo-sensor for Zn2+ ions recognition. Pyrazoline compounds exhibit excellent sensitivity & selectivity and emitting blue-light with high quantum yields and electroluminescence, along with a superior limit of detection. These derivatives are stable bioactive molecule, with well-known diverse biological activities. This review not only gives valuable insights into the essential role of Zinc in human physiology but also provides a practical method for accurate Zinc detection in various samples. Which holds the potential for advancements in health diagnostics and environmental monitoring. Because of their significant biological application and selectivity as sensors, researchers have much more attention to prepare green environmentally-friendly pyrazoline derivatives.

Research progress on preparation methods and sensing applications of molecularly imprinted polymer-aptamer dual recognition elements

The aptamer (Apt) and the molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP), as effective substitutes for antibodies, have received widespread attention from researchers because of their creation. However, the low stability of Apt in harsh detection environment and the poor specificity of MIP have hindered their development. Therefore, some researchers have attempted to combine MIP with Apt to explore whether the effect of "1 + 1 > 2" can be achieved. Since its first report in 2013, MIP-Apt dual recognition elements have become a highly focused research direction in the fields of biology and chemistry. MIP-Apt dual recognition elements not only possess the high specificity of Apt and the high stability of MIP in harsh detection environment, but also have high sensitivity and affinity. They have been successfully applied in medical diagnosis, food safety, and environmental monitoring fields. This article provides a systematic overview of three preparation methods for MIP-Apt dual recognition elements and their application in eight different types of sensors. It also provides effective insights into the problems and development directions faced by MIP-Apt dual recognition elements.

Portable sensors equipped with smartphones for organophosphorus pesticides detection

Organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) play an important role in agricultural production and the accurate detection of OP residues is essential to ensure food safety. Portable sensors are expected to be a potential device due to their high detection efficiency, easy-to-use processes and low cost. Due to the widespread popularity and powerful capabilities of smartphones, smartphone-based sensing systems have rapidly developed into ideal tools for portable detection, however, a systematic review on the detection of OPs is still lacking. Therefore, a comprehensive overview of sensors equipped with smartphones for OP detection in recent year is provided; this overview includes their sensing signals (colorimetric, fluorescent, chemiluminescent and electrochemical signals), detection mechanism, analysis applications, advantages/disadvantages and perspectives. Moreover, the progress of sensors equipped with smartphones for the detection of OPs in food is thoroughly summarized. This review contributes to food safety and the development of efficient and reliable methods for smartphone-based OPs detection.

Cupric oxide nanosheet as an oxidase mimic for fluorescent detection of acetone by a 3D-printed portable device

A cupric oxide (CuO) nanosheet-based chemical fluorescence sensor was developed to realize the detection of acetone in aqueous solutions. CuO is an oxidase mimic and can catalyze the oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) to form 2,3-diaminophenazine (oxOPD). Interestingly, acetone was found to possess the scavenging ability for superoxide anions generated in the CuO-catalyzed oxidation system, hence weakening the OPD oxidation and leading to a reduction in the fluorescence intensity of the catalyzing system at 574 nm under excitation at 425 nm. Based on this property of acetone, a fluorescent sensor was constructed to detect acetone. The sensor exhibits a linear range of 1.35 to 2 × 105 µmol L-1 and a detection limit of 1.08 µmol L-1. Additionally, a smartphone-free portable device was constructed to realize on-the-spot and rapid detection of acetone in cauliflower, mineral water, tap water, and lake water samples. The recoveries by the portable device are 93.2 to 108% for actual samples, with relative standard deviations of less than 4.3%, indicating a potential application prospect of the device in on-site detection.

The clinical applicability of sensor technology with body position detection to combat pressure ulcers in bedridden patients

INTRODUCTION

Pressure Ulcers (PUs) are a major healthcare issue leading to prolonged hospital stays and decreased quality of life. Monitoring body position changes using sensors could reduce workload, improve turn compliance and decrease PU incidence.

METHOD

This systematic review assessed the clinical applicability of different sensor types capable of in-bed body position detection.

RESULTS

We included 39 articles. Inertial sensors were most commonly used (n = 14). This sensor type has high accuracy and is equipped with a 2-4 hour turn-interval warning system increasing turn compliance. The second-largest group were piezoresistive (pressure) sensors (n = 12), followed by load sensors (n = 4), piezoelectric sensors (n = 3), radio wave-based sensors (n = 3) and capacitive sensors (n = 3). All sensor types except inertial sensors showed a large variety in the type and number of detected body positions. However, clinically relevant position changes such as trunk rotation and head of bed elevation were not detected or tested.

CONCLUSION

Inertial sensors are the benchmark sensor type regarding accuracy and clinical applicability but these sensors have direct patient contact and (re)applying the sensors requires the effort of a nurse. Other sensor types without these disadvantages should be further investigated and developed. We propose the Pressure Ulcer Position System (PUPS) guideline to facilitate this.
