Structural Features of Styrene-Functionalized Cyclodextrin Polymers That Promote the Adsorption of Perfluoroalkyl Acids in Water

Cross-linked β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) polymers are promising adsorbents for the removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from contaminated water sources, including contaminated groundwater, drinking water, and wastewater. We previously reported porous, styrene-functionalized β-cyclodextrin (StyDex) polymers derived from radical polymerization with vinyl comonomers. Because of the versatility of these polymerizations, StyDex polymer compositions are tunable, which facilitates efforts to establish structure-adsorption relationships and to discover improved materials. Here, we evaluate the material properties and PFAS adsorption of 20 StyDex derivatives with varied comonomer structure and loading, regiochemistry of styrene placement on the CD monomer, and CD size. A StyDex polymer containing N,N'-dimethylbutyl ammonium ions exhibited the most effective PFAS adsorption in batch experiments. Furthermore, a StyDex polymer containing β-CD exhibited size-selective host-guest interactions with perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) and neutral contaminants in aqueous electrolyte when compared to similar polymers containing either α-CD or γ-CD. Polymers based on β-CD monomers with an average of seven styrene groups randomly positioned over the 21 available hydroxyl groups performed similarly to those based on a β-CD monomer functionalized regiospecifically at each of the seven 6' positions. The former β-CD monomer is prepared in a single step from unmodified β-CD, so the ability to use it without compromising performance demonstrates promise for developing economically competitive adsorbents. These results offered important insights into structure-adsorption properties of StyDex polymers and will inform the design of improved StyDex formulations.

Reconstructing Kaolinite Compounds for Remarkably Enhanced Adsorption of Congo Red

Organic dyes are widely used in many important areas, but they also bring many issues for water pollution. To address the above issues, a reconstructed kaolinite hybrid compound (γ-AlOOH@A-Kaol) was obtained from raw kaolinite (Kaol) in this work. The product was then characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the absorption properties of γ-AlOOH@A-Kaol for congo red were further studied. The results demonstrated that flower-like γ-AlOOH with nanolamellae were uniformly loaded on the surface of acid-treated Kaol with a porous structure (A-Kaol). In addition, the surface area (36.5 m2/g), pore volume (0.146 cm3/g), and pore size (13.0 nm) of γ-AlOOH@A-Kaol were different from those of A-Kaol (127.4 m2/g, 0.127 cm3/g, and 4.28 nm, respectively) and γ-AlOOH (34.1 m2/g, 0.315 cm3/g, and 21.5 nm, respectively). The unique structure could significantly enhance the sorption capacity for congo red, which could exceed 1000 mg/g. The reasons may be ascribed to the abundant groups of -OH, large specific surface area, and porous structure of γ-AlOOH@A-Kaol. This work provides an efficient route for comprehensive utilization and production of Kaol-based compound materials that could be used in the field of environmental conservation.

Zanthoxylum bungeanum Waste-Derived High-Nitrogen Self-Doped Porous Carbons as Efficient Adsorbents for Methylene Blue

In this study, we prepared high-nitrogen self-doped porous carbons (NPC1 and NPC2) derived from the pruned branches and seeds of Zanthoxylum bungeanum using a simple one-step method. NPC1 and NPC2 exhibited elevated nitrogen contents of 3.56% and 4.22%, respectively, along with rich porous structures, high specific surface areas of 1492.9 and 1712.7 m2 g-1 and abundant surface groups. Notably, both NPC1 and NPC2 demonstrated remarkable adsorption abilities for the pollutant methylene blue (MB), with maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of 568.18 and 581.40 mg g-1, respectively. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the adsorption isotherms conformed to the Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption mechanism primarily relied on the hierarchical pore structures of NPC1 and NPC2 and their diverse strong interactions with MB molecules. This study offers a new approach for the cost-effective design of nitrogen self-doped porous carbons, facilitating the efficient removal of MB from wastewater.

High Hydrogen Storage in Trigonal Prismatic Monomer-Based Highly Porous Aromatic Frameworks

Hydrogen storage is crucial in the shift toward a carbon-neutral society, where hydrogen serves as a pivotal renewable energy source. Utilizing porous materials can provide an efficient hydrogen storage solution, reducing tank pressures to manageable levels and circumventing the energy-intensive and costly current technological infrastructure. Herein, two highly porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs), C-PAF and Si-PAF, prepared through a Yamamoto C─C coupling reaction between trigonal prismatic monomers, are reported. These PAFs exhibit large pore volumes and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller areas, 3.93 cm3 g-1 and 4857 m2 g-1 for C-PAF, and 3.80 cm3 g-1 and 6099 m2 g-1 for Si-PAF, respectively. Si-PAF exhibits a record-high gravimetric hydrogen delivery capacity of 17.01 wt% and a superior volumetric capacity of 46.5 g L-1 under pressure-temperature swing adsorption conditions (77 K, 100 bar → 160 K, 5 bar), outperforming benchmark hydrogen storage materials. By virtue of the robust C─C covalent bond, both PAFs show impressive structural stabilities in harsh environments and unprecedented long-term durability. Computational modeling methods are employed to simulate and investigate the structural and adsorption properties of the PAFs. These results demonstrate that C-PAF and Si-PAF are promising materials for efficient hydrogen storage.

Cu(II)-Loaded Polydopamine-Coated Urchin-like Titanate Microspheres as a High-Performance IMAC Adsorbent for Hemoglobin Separation

Immobilized metal ion affinity chromatography (IMAC) adsorbents generally have excellent affinity for histidine-rich proteins. However, the leaching of metal ions from the adsorbent usually affects its adsorption performance, which greatly affects the reusable performance of the adsorbent, resulting in many limitations in practical applications. Herein, a novel IMAC adsorbent, i.e., Cu(II)-loaded polydopamine-coated urchin-like titanate microspheres (Cu-PDA-UTMS), was prepared via metal coordination to make Cu ions uniformly decorate polydopamine-coated titanate microspheres. The as-synthesized microspheres exhibit an urchin-like structure, providing more binding sites for hemoglobin. Cu-PDA-UTMS exhibit favorable selectivity for hemoglobin adsorption and have a desirable adsorption capacity towards hemoglobin up to 2704.6 mg g-1. Using 0.1% CTAB as eluent, the adsorbed hemoglobin was easily eluted with a recovery rate of 86.8%. In addition, Cu-PDA-UTMS shows good reusability up to six cycles. In the end, the adsorption properties by Cu-PDA-UTMS towards hemoglobin from human blood samples were analyzed by SDS-PAGE. The results showed that Cu-PDA-UTMS are a high-performance IMAC adsorbent for hemoglobin separation, which provides a new method for the effective separation and purification of hemoglobin from complex biological samples.

The Constructing of the Oxide Phase Diagram for Fluoride Adsorption on La-Fe-Al: A Collaborative Study of Density Functional Calculation and Experimentation

In recent years, fluoride pollution in water is a problem that has attracted much attention from researchers. The removal of fluoride-containing wastewater by adsorption with metal oxide as an adsorbent is the most common treatment method. Based on this, the effect of the doping ratio of La2O3, Fe2O3, and Al2O3 on the fluoride-removal performance was discussed by constructing a phase diagram. In this study, the adsorption mechanism of nanocrystalline lanthanum oxide terpolymer was investigated by density functional theory calculation and experiment. The optimal pH condition selected in the experiment was three, and the adsorption kinetics of fluoride ions were more consistent with the quasi-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption thermodynamics was more consistent with the Langmuir model. When the La-Fe-Al ternary composite oxides achieved the optimal adsorption efficiency for fluoride ions, the mass synthesis ratio was Al2O3:(Fe2O3:La2O3 = 1:2) = 1:100, resulting in a fluoride ion removal rate of up to 99.78%. Density functional calculations revealed that the La-Fe-Al ternary composite oxides had three important adsorption sites for La, Fe, and Al. Among them, the adsorption capacity for HF was Fe2O3 > La2O3 > Al2O3, and for F- was La2O3 > Al2O3 > Fe2O3. This provided good guidance for designing adsorbents to remove fluoride.

Application of Infrared Pyrolysis and Chemical Post-Activation in the Conversion of Polyethylene Terephthalate Waste into Porous Carbons for Water Purification

In this study, we compared the conversion of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into porous carbons for water purification using pyrolysis and post-activation with KOH. Pyrolysis was conducted at 400-850 °C, followed by KOH activation at 850 °C for samples pyrolyzed at 400, 650, and 850 °C. Both pyrolyzed and post-activated carbons showed high specific surface areas, up to 504.2 and 617.7 m2 g-1, respectively. As the pyrolysis temperature increases, the crystallite size of the graphite phase rises simultaneously with a decrease in specific surface area. This phenomenon significantly influences the final specific surface area values of the activated samples. Despite their relatively high specific surface areas, pyrolyzed PET-derived carbons prove unsuitable as adsorbents for purifying aqueous media from methylene blue dye. A sample pyrolyzed at 650 °C, with a surface area of 504.2 m2 g-1, exhibited a maximum adsorption value of only 20.4 mg g-1. We propose that the pyrolyzed samples have a surface coating of amorphous carbon poor in oxygen groups, impeding the diffusion of dye molecules. Conversely, post-activated samples emerge as promising adsorbents, exhibiting a maximum adsorption capacity of up to 127.7 mg g-1. This suggests their potential for efficient dye removal in water purification applications.

Comparison of Oil-Seed Shell Biomass-Based Biochar for the Removal of Anionic Dyes-Characterization and Adsorption Efficiency Studies

This research investigated the synthesis of biochar through the direct pyrolysis of pre-roasted sunflower seed shells (SFS) and peanut shells (PNS) and compared their application for the effective removal of textile dyes from wastewater. Biochar prepared at 900 °C (SFS900 and PNS900) showed the highest adsorption capacity, which can be attributed to the presence of higher nitrogen content and graphite-like structures. CHNS analysis revealed that PNS900 exhibited an 11.4% higher carbon content than SFS900, which enhanced the environmental stability of PNS biochar. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses of the produced biochar indicated the degradation of cellulosic and lignin moieties. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed a 13.8% and 22.6% increase in C-C/C=C mass concentrations in the SFS900 and PNS900, respectively, and could be attributed to the condensation of polyaromatic structures. Batch experiments for dye removal demonstrated that irrespective of dye species, PNS900 exhibited superior dye removal efficiency compared to SFS900 at similar dosages. In addition to H-bonding and electrostatic interactions, the presence of pyridinic-N and graphitic-N can play a vital role in enhancing Lewis acid-base and π-π EDA interactions. The results can provide valuable insights into the biochar-dye interaction mechanisms.

Efficacy of a multicomponent binding agent against combined exposure to zearalenone and ochratoxin A in weaned pigs

Introduction

The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a novel multicomponent substance against combined exposure to the mycotoxins zearalenone (ZEN) and ochratoxin A (OTA) in weaned piglets.

Methods

In total, 60 piglets at the age of 28 days were equally allocated to four experimental groups (A-D), consisting of eight female and seven male piglets each (15 animals per group, for a total trial duration of 42 days). Animals from group A received typical weaner feed without mycotoxins or the test product [multicomponent mycotoxin detoxifying agent (MMDA)]. Group B animals received the same weaner feed contaminated with 0.992 mg ZEN/kg feed and 0.531 mg OTA/kg feed without the addition of the MMDA. Animals in group C received the same contaminated feed as group B with the addition of 1.5 g MMDA/kg feed, whereas group D received the same feed as group B with the inclusion of 3 g MMDA/kg feed. Clinical signs and performance parameters [body weight (BW), average daily weight gain (ADWG), and feed conversion ratio (FCR)] were evaluated, while mycotoxin residues were also assessed in the liver and kidney tissues.

Results

Findings showed improved FCR in the group that received the greatest dose of the test product (3 g MMDA/kg feed) compared to the group that received the lower dose (1.5 g MMDA/kg feed). A few hematological and biochemical parameters were slightly altered, predominantly within normal limits. The residue analysis demonstrated a reduction of OTA in liver samples, a-ZEL in the liver and total tested samples, and a total of ZEN and metabolite contents in all samples of the group that received the greatest MMDA dose in comparison to the group that received the toxins without the addition of the test product.

Discussion

Therefore, a positive effect of the MMDA at the greatest dosage regime on reducing bioavailability and tissue deposition of ZEN and OTA, with a particularly positive effect on FCR in weaned pigs, is suggested under concurrent ZEN and OTA exposure in vivo.

Thiadiazole-Functionalized Th/Zr-UiO-66 for Efficient C2H2/CO2 Separation

Adsorptive separation technology provides an effective approach for separating gases with similar physicochemical properties, such as the purification of acetylene (C2H2) from carbon dioxide (CO2). The high designability and tunability of metal-organic framework (MOF) adsorbents make them ideal design platforms for this challenging separation. Herein, we employ an isoreticular functionalization strategy to fine-tune the pore environment of Zr- and Th-based UiO-66 by the immobilization of the benzothiadiazole group via bottom-up synthesis. The functionalized UPC-120 exhibits an enhanced C2H2/CO2 separation performance, which is confirmed by adsorption isotherms, dynamic breakthrough curves, and theoretical simulations. The synergy of ligand functionalization and metal ion fine-tuning guided by isoreticular chemistry provides a new perspective for the design and development of adsorbents for challenging gas separation processes.

Nanoarchitectonics Solution Plasma Polymerization of Amino-Rich Carbon Nanosorbents for Use in Enhanced Fluoride Removal

Amino-functionalized carbon (NH2C) is an effective adsorbent in removing pollutants from contaminated water because of its high specific surface area and electrical charge. In the conventional preparation method, the introduction of amino groups onto the carbon surface is limited, resulting in low pollutant adsorption. Herein, we present simultaneous carbonization and amination to form NH2C via electrical discharge of nonequilibrium plasma, and the resultant material is applied as an effective adsorbent in fluoride removal. The simultaneous process introduces numerous amino groups into the carbon framework, enhancing the adsorption efficiency. The fluoride adsorption capacity is approximately 121.12 mg g-1, which is several times higher than those reported in previous studies. Furthermore, computational modeling is performed to yield deeper mechanistic insights into the molecular-level adsorption behavior. These data are useful in designing and synthesizing advanced materials for applications in water remediation.

[Preparation of Chitosan-modified Biochar and Its Adsorption Mechanism for Cd2+ in Aqueous Solution]

Chitosan-modified biochar （CBC） was prepared as a low-cost and highly efficient adsorbent for Cd2+ in aqueous solutions. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to evaluate the adsorption performance. Characterization experiments with SEM-EDS， FTIR， and XPS were used to analyze the surface microstructure and chemical composition of the adsorbent. The results showed that the adsorption performance of CBC was remarkably improved by the introduction of surface functional groups （-OH， -C=O， and -NH2）. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model were better for describing the kinetics and isotherms for Cd2+ adsorption onto CBC， indicating that the adsorption rate was determined by the active sites and controlled by monolayer chemisorption. The adsorption process was endothermic spontaneous， and the key mechanisms involved complexation， precipitation， cation exchange， and cation-π bonds. After five instances of adsorption-desorption cycles， the adsorption capacity of CBC for Cd2+ still remained above 80% of the initial adsorption capacity， indicating that CBC had a favorable recyclability. The current work embodies the concept of green chemistry， and the prepared chitosan-modified biochar was a promising adsorbent for the removal of Cd2+ in wastewater and soil.

A Data-Driven Approach to Molten Salt Synthesis of N-Rich Carbon Adsorbents for Selective CO2 Capture

Applying a design of experiments methodology to the molten salt synthesis of nanoporous carbons enables inverse design and optimization of nitrogen (N)-rich carbon adsorbents with excellent CO2 /N2 selectivity and appreciable CO2 capacity for carbon capture via swing adsorption from dilute gas mixtures such as natural gas combined cycle flue gas. This data-driven study reveals fundamental structure-function relationships between the synthesis conditions, physicochemical properties, and achievable selective adsorption performance of N-rich nanoporous carbons derived from molten salt synthesis for CO2 capture. Taking advantage of size-sieving separation of CO2 (3.30 Å) from N2 (3.64 Å) within the turbostratic nanostructure of these N-rich carbons, while limiting deleterious N2 adsorption in a weaker adsorption site that harms selectivity, enables a large CO2 capacity (0.73 mmol g-1 at 30.4 Torr and 30 °C) with noteworthy concurrent CO2 /N2 selectivity as predicted by the ideal adsorbed solution theory (SIAST = 246) with an adsorbed phase purity of 91% from a simulated gas stream containing only 4% CO2 . Optimized N-rich porous carbons, with good physicochemical stability, low cost, and moderate regeneration energy, can achieve performance for selective CO2 adsorption that competes with other classes of advanced porous materials such as chemisorbing zeolites and functionalized metal-organic frameworks.

A Magnetic Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite: Synthesis, Characterization, and Application for High-Efficiency Detoxification of Aflatoxin B1

(1) Background: Safety problems associated with aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) contamination have always been a major threat to human health. Removing AFB1 through adsorption is considered an attractive remediation technique. (2) Methods: To produce an adsorbent with a high AFB1 adsorption efficiency, a magnetic reduced graphene oxide composite (Fe3O4@rGO) was synthesized using one-step hydrothermal fabrication. Then, the adsorbent was characterized using a series of techniques, such as SEM, TEM, XRD, FT-IR, VSM, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis. Finally, the effects of this nanocomposite on the nutritional components of treated foods, such as vegetable oil and peanut milk, were also examined. (3) Results: The optimal synthesis conditions for Fe3O4@rGO were determined to be 200 °C for 6 h. The synthesis temperature significantly affected the adsorption properties of the prepared material due to its effect on the layered structure of graphene and the loading of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The results of various characterizations illustrated that the surface of Fe3O4@rGO had a two-dimensional layered nanostructure with many folds and that Fe3O4 nanoparticles were distributed uniformly on the surface of the composite material. Moreover, the results of isotherm, kinetic, and thermodynamic analyses indicated that the adsorption of AFB1 by Fe3O4@rGO conformed to the Langmuir model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 82.64 mg·g-1; the rapid and efficient adsorption of AFB1 occurred mainly through chemical adsorption via a spontaneous endothermic process. When applied to treat vegetable oil and peanut milk, the prepared material minimized the loss of nutrients and thus preserved food quality. (4) Conclusions: The above findings reveal a promising adsorbent, Fe3O4@rGO, with favorable properties for AFB1 adsorption and potential for food safety applications.

Influence of ZnO morphology on the capability of portable paper-based electrospray ionization mass spectrometry to determine therapeutic drugs in complex matrices

Adsorbents play a significant role in enhancing the analytical sensitivity of target analytes in complex samples by mitigating matrix effects. In our recent report, ZnO stood out among various adsorbents to determine target therapeutic drugs in complex biological matrices when applied for portable paper-based electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (PPESI-MS). However, the influence of the morphology of ZnO on the performance of PPESI-MS is elusive. Herein, different morphologies of ZnO particles were prepared via co-precipitation or ultrasonic methods, and their capability to determine different therapeutic drugs in serum were systemically investigated. The results demonstrated that flower-shaped ZnO gave a superior capacity, and its analysis sensitivity was 2.9-12.8-fold higher than those achieved with other ZnO morphologies. Further characterization revealed that the unique performance of flower-shaped ZnO was closely associated with its favorable desorption behavior to drugs, small spray plume, and few spray emitters at the tip of coated paper substrate. To illustrate the potential of flower-shaped ZnO, its coated paper was used as a substrate for the determination of various drugs in complex matrices such as serum, and a limit of detection as low as 2 pg mL-1 was achieved. The corresponding recoveries ranged from 93.2% to 107.2%. The developed protocol is promising in high-sensitivity analysis of target drugs in complex sample matrices.

MXene/Cellulose Hydrogel Composites: Preparation and Adsorption Properties of Pb2

In this work, acrylic cellulose hydrogel, a typical natural polymer adsorbent, was modified using MXene through in situ polymerization to create a synthetic inorganic-polymer composite known as MXene/cellulose hydrogel. FTIR, XRD, SEM, and thermogravimetric analyses were applied to characterize the chemical structure and micromorphology. The MXene/cellulose hydrogel was utilized for the removal of Pb2+ from wastewater. Under optimal experimental conditions (initial Pb2+ concentration of 0.04 mol/L, adsorption time of 150 min, pH = 5.5, and MXene doping content of 50% at 30 °C), a maximum adsorption capacity of 410.57 mg/g was achieved. The MXene/cellulose hydrogel corresponded with the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation model and exhibited a better fit with the Freundlich isotherm model.

Exploration of porous imine-based covalent organic framework for solid-phase extraction of five trace sulfonamides in food samples

In this article, a highly crystalline porous imine-based covalent organic framework was synthesized at room temperature and used as solid-phase extraction (SPE) adsorbent for the purification and enrichment of trace sulfonamides (SAs) from food samples. The structure of the obtained material was characterized and studied in detail. The extraction process was optimized and the final elution was determined by the ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry method. Low limits of detection (0.02-0.19 μg/kg) were obtained under optimal conditions, with the recoveries ranging from 70.5% to 105.3% when spiked at different levels. The adsorption process of the material for SAs was fitted by the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm model, and the extraction capacity for Nitrofuran metabolites from food samples was also investigated for comparison. The results demonstrated that the framework was a good candidate SPE adsorbent that can be used for the enrichment of drug residues in complex matrix, and the work may provide a systematic study method for the development of porous adsorbents.

[Advances in synthesis methods and applications of microporous organic networks for sample preparation]

Sample pretreatment is an essential step in chromatographic analysis. Solid phase extraction (SPE) is a widely used sample pretreatment method. In SPE, the quality of the adsorbent directly affects the adsorption and enrichment efficiency of the target compounds as well as the sensitivity and selectivity of the pretreatment and subsequent analysis. Therefore, the selection and development of adsorbents has become a research hotspot. Microporous organic networks (MONs) are a novel type of covalent organic materials that are synthesized by the Sonogashira reaction of aromatic alkynes and aromatic halides. These networks have the advantages of modifiable structures, large specific surface areas, high porosity, and simple synthesis methods. This paper reviews the synthesis and functional modification methods of MONs, with an emphasis on their applications in sample pretreatment. Future development trends are also prospected. In terms of synthesis, the preparation methods for MON-based materials have progressed from reflux and solvothermal synthesis to room-temperature synthesis, the conditions of which tend to be milder and more efficient. In terms of functional modification, the introduction of macromolecules and active groups (including amino, hydroxyl, and carboxylic groups) can increase the selectivity and active sites of MON-based materials. The combination of MONs with Fe3O4, SiO2, and metal organic frameworks yields core-shell-structured MONs. Furtherly, they can be calcined and etched to form porous carbon structures or hollow multilayer materials. Functionalized MONs and their composite materials have multiple interaction mechanisms (e. g., hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic, electrostatic, and π-π interactions) with various target compounds, thereby realizing their efficient extraction. MONs can be used as adsorbent materials in SPE, Solid phase microextraction, dispersed solid phase extraction, magnetic solid phase extraction, and other pretreatment methods. When combined with chromatography and chromatography-mass spectrometry, MONs achieve good adsorption effects and high sensitivity, demonstrating the application potential of these materials in sample pretreatment.

Adsorption of Safranin O Dye by Alginate/Pomegranate Peels Beads: Kinetic, Isotherm and Thermodynamic Studies

Water pollution is regarded as a dangerous problem that needs to be resolved right away. This is largely due to the positive correlation between the increase in global population and waste production, especially food waste. Hydrogel beads based on sodium alginate (Alg) and pomegranate fruit peels (PP) were developed for the adsorption of Safranin O dye (SO) in aqueous solutions. The obtained Alg-PP beads were widely characterized. The effects of the contact time (0-180 min), initial concentration (10-300 mg/L), initial pH (2-10), adsorbent dosage (1-40 g/L) and the temperature (293-333 K) were investigated through batch tests. The data proved that the adsorption kinetics of SO reached equilibrium within 30 min and up to 180 min. The dye adsorption is concentration dependent while a slight effect of pH was observed. The adsorption data of SO onto synthesized beads follow the pseudo second-order model. The experimental data fitted very well to Langmuir model with correlation factor of 0.92 which demonstrated the favourable nature of adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity of Alg-PP could reach 30.769 mg/g at 293 K. Calculation of Gibbs free energy and enthalpy indicated that adsorption of SO onto Alg-PP is spontaneous (negative ΔG) and endothermic (ΔH = 9.30 kJ/mol). Analysis of diffusion and mass transport phenomena were presented. The removal efficiency was found to be 88% at the first cycle and decreased to 71% at the end of the seventh cycle. The reported results revealed that the Alg-PP beads could be used as a novel natural adsorbent for the removal of high concentrated solutions of Safranin O which is a cationic dye from liquid affluents and as future perspective, it can be used to remove various pollutants from wastewater.

Efficacy of Two Commercially Available Adsorbents to Reduce the Combined Toxic Effects of Dietary Aflatoxins, Fumonisins, and Zearalenone and Their Residues in the Tissues of Weaned Pigs

Mycotoxins present a significant health concern within the animal-feed industry, with profound implications for the pig-farming sector. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of two commercial adsorbents, an organically modified clinoptilolite (OMC) and a multicomponent mycotoxin detoxifying agent (MMDA), to ameliorate the combined adverse effects of dietary aflatoxins (AFs: sum of AFB1, AFB2, AFG1, and AFG2), fumonisins (FBs), and zearalenone (ZEN) at levels of nearly 0.5, 1.0, and 1.0 mg/kg, on a cohort of cross-bred female pigs (N = 24). Pigs were randomly allocated into six experimental groups (control, mycotoxins (MTX) alone, MTX + OMC 1.5 kg/ton, MTX + OMC 3.0 kg/ton, MTX + MMDA 1.5 kg/ton, and MTX + MMDA 3.0 kg/ton), each consisting of four individuals, and subjected to a dietary regimen spanning 42 days. The administration of combined AFs, FBs, and ZEN reduced the body-weight gain and increased the relative weight of the liver, while there was no negative influence observed on the serum biochemistry of animals. The supplementation of OMC and MMDA ameliorated the toxic effects, as observed in organ histology, and provided a notable reduction in residual AFs, FBs, and ZEN levels in the liver and kidneys. Moreover, the OMC supplementation was able to reduce the initiation of liver carcinogenesis without any hepatotoxic side effects. These findings demonstrate that the use of OMC and MMDA effectively mitigated the adverse effects of dietary AFs, FBs, and ZEN in piglets. Further studies should explore the long-term protective effects of the studied adsorbent supplementation to optimize mycotoxin management strategies in pig-farming operations.

Adsorption of sulfur-containing contaminant gases by pristine, Cr and Mo doped NbS2monolayers based on density functional theory

The adsorption and sensor performance of hazardous gases containing sulfur (SO2, H2S and SO3) on pristine, Cr and Mo doped NbS2monolayers (Cr-NbS2and Mo-NbS2) were investigated in detail based on density functional theory. The comparative analysis of the parameters such as density of states, adsorption energy, charge transfer, recovery time and work function of the systems showed that the pristine NbS2monolayer have poor sensor performance for sulfur-containing hazardous gases due to weak adsorption capacity, insignificant charge transfer and insignificant changes in electronic properties after gas adsorption on the surface. After doping with Cr atoms, the adsorption performance of Cr-NbS2was significantly improved, and it can be used as a sensor for SO2and H2S gases and as an adsorbent for SO3gas. The adsorption performance of Mo-NbS2is also significantly improved by doping with Mo atoms, and it can be used as a sensor for H2S gas and as an adsorbent for SO2and SO3gas. Therefore, Cr-NbS2and Mo-NbS2are revealed to be sensing or elimination materials for the harmful gases containing sulfur (SO2, H2S and SO3) in the atmosphere.

Carbon-in-Silicate Nanohybrid Constructed by In Situ Confined Conversion of Organics in Rectorite for Complete Removal of Dye from Water

The complete removal of low concentration organic pollutants from wastewater to obtain clean water has always been a highly desired but challenging issue. In response to this, we proposed a new strategy to fabricate a carbon-in-silicate nanohybrid composite by recycling dye-loaded layered clay adsorbent and converting them to new heterogeneous carbon-in-silicate nanocomposite through an associated calcination-hydrothermal activation process. It has been confirmed that most of the dye molecules were present in waste rectorite adsorbent using an intercalation mode, which can be in situ converted to carbon in the confined interlayer spacing of rectorite. The further hydrothermal activation process may further improve the pore structure and increase surface active sites. As expected, the optimal composite shows extremely high removal rates of 99.6% and 99.5% for Methylene blue (MB) and Basic Red 14 (BR) at low concentrations (25 mg/L), respectively. In addition, the composite adsorbent also shows high removal capacity for single-component and two-component dyes in deionized water and actual water (i.e., Yellow River water, Yangtze River water, and seawater) with a removal rate higher than 99%. The adsorbent has good reusability, and the adsorption efficiency is still above 93% after five regeneration cycles. The waste clay adsorbent-derived composite adsorbent can be used as an inexpensive material for the decontamination of dyed wastewater.

Rice Husk Cellulose-Based Adsorbent to Extract Rare Metals: Preparing and Properties

Adsorption is one of the common stages in the hydrometallurgy of rare metals. Its efficiency is largely determined by the quality of the sorbent used. The purpose of this work was to create an activated sorbent based on rice husk cellulose for the extraction of rhenium from aqueous solutions. Two types of cellulose were obtained by treating rice husk with a 1.5% NaOH solution (alkaline cellulose) and a nitric acid solution in ethyl alcohol (Kürschner and Hoffer cellulose). They were tested by IR, SEM, TA, TPD-MS, and XRD methods. It was found that Kürschner and Hoffer cellulose does not contain lignin and retains structural order to a greater extent. By means of this cellulose carbonization at 600 °C and activation by physical, chemical, and combined methods, a series of sorbents were prepared and studied by different methods. It was determined that the sorbent KHC4-600VA obtained by combined activation of cellulose carbonizate by water vapor at 850 °C, followed by an alkaline treatment, has the best textural characteristics: S-~1200 m2·g-1, V-1.22 cm3·g-1, and R-2.05 nm. KHC4-600VA provides 90% recovery of Re (VII) ions from aqueous solutions. According to the Freundlich model, sorption proceeds favorably on the sorbent's heterogeneous surface.

Polysaccharide-based biosorbents for cholesterol and bile salts in gastric-intestinal passage: Advances and future trends

Cholesterol is one of the hazard elements for many cardiovascular diseases, but many cholesterol-lowering drugs are expensive and unhealthy. Therefore, it is necessary to develop edible and safe biosorbents to reduce excess cholesterol and bile salts in the gastric-intestinal passage. Polysaccharide-based biosorbents offer a feasible strategy for decreasing them. This review summarized polysaccharide-based biosorbents that have been developed for adsorbing cholesterol and bile salts from the gastric-intestinal passage and analyzed common modification methods for these adsorbents. Finally, the adsorption models were also elucidated. Polysaccharides, including β-cyclodextrin, pectin, chitin/chitosan, dietary fiber extract, and cellulose, have been proposed for adsorbing cholesterol and bile salts in the gastric-intestinal passage as biosorbents. This is mainly due to the retention of pores, the capture of the viscosity network, and the help of hydrophobic interactions. In spite of this, the adsorption capacity of polysaccharides is still limited. Therefore, the modifications for them became the most popular areas in the recent studies of in vitro cholesterol adsorption. Chemical approaches namely grafting, (1) acetylation, (2) hydroxypropylation, (3) carboxymethylation, and (4) amination are considered to modify the polysaccharides for higher adsorption ability. Moreover, ultrasonic/microwave/pressure treatment and micron technology (microfluidization, micronization, and ball milling) are effective physical modification methods, while the biological approach mainly refers to enzymatic hydrolysis and microbial fermentation. The adsorption models are generally explained by two adsorption isotherms and two adsorption kinetics. In sum, it is reckoned that further food applications will follow soon.

Effective Removal of Dyes from Wastewater by Osmanthus Fragrans Biomass Charcoal

The exploration of low-cost, high-performance adsorbents is a popular research issue. In this work, a straightforward method that combined hydrothermal with tube firing was used to produce Osmanthus fragrans biomass charcoal (OBC) from low-cost osmanthus for dye adsorption in water. The study examined the parameters of starting concentration, pH, and duration, which impacted the process of adsorption of different dyes by OBC. The analysis showed that the adsorption capacities of OBC for six dyes: malachite green (MG, C0 = 800 mg/L, pH = 7), Congo red (CR, C0 = 1000 mg/L, pH = 8), rhodamine B (RhB, C0 = 500 mg/L, pH = 6), methyl orange (MO, C0 = 1000 mg/L, pH = 7), methylene blue (MB, C0 = 700 mg/L, pH = 8), and crystalline violet (CV, C0 = 500 mg/L, pH = 7) were 6501.09, 2870.30, 554.93, 6277.72, 626.50, and 3539.34 mg/g, respectively. The pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir isotherm model were compatible with the experimental findings, which suggested the dominance of ion exchange and chemisorption. The materials were characterized by using XRD, SEM, FTIR, BET, and XPS, and the results showed that OBC had an outstanding specific surface area (2063 m2·g-1), with potential adsorption mechanisms that included electrostatic mechanisms, hydrogen bonding, and π-π adsorption. The fact that the adsorption capacity did not drastically decrease after five cycles of adsorption and desorption suggests that OBC has the potential to be a dye adsorbent.

Recent Progress of Layered Double Hydroxide-Based Materials in Wastewater Treatment

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) can be used as catalysts and adsorbents due to their high stability, safety, and reusability. The preparation of modified LDHs mainly includes coprecipitation, hydrothermal, ion exchange, calcination recovery, and sol-gel methods. LDH-based materials have high anion exchange capacity, good thermal stability, and a large specific surface area, which can effectively adsorb and remove heavy metal ions, inorganic anions, organic pollutants, and oil pollutants from wastewater. Additionally, they are heterogeneous catalysts and have excellent catalytic effect in the Fenton system, persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes, and electrocatalytic system. This review ends with a discussion of the challenges and future trends of the application of LDHs in wastewater treatment.

Avoiding artifacts in the determination of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance sorbent-water distribution

Characterizing sorbent affinity for a target compound (described by sorbent-water distribution coefficient, Ksw) is a necessary step in the sorbent selection and performance-testing process in the process of capturing aquatic contaminants. However, no standardized procedure exists to measure Ksw, and studies display significant variations in set-up and performance. For per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), most Ksw determinations employ batch experiments with small-scale water-sorbent mixtures, methanol-based spike of target compound(s), and analysis after assumed equilibrium, but methodological details of the above procedure differ and might cause artifacts in the determination of Ksw. We conducted several batch experiments systematically varying a general procedure to characterize effects of sub-optimal experimental design. Using a selection of PFAS (6-carbon fluorinated chain length with differing functional groups) and two sorbents, we tested variations of solution:sorbent ratio, methanol content, and PFAS initial concentration, and compared derived Ksw values. Each methodological component affected log(Ksw), usually by suppressing the value (by 0-48%) when compared with a "best design" procedure. Thus, we suggest (1) a reference procedure for PFAS and sorbents used here, and (2) general guidelines for batch experiment design with different compounds and sorbents. Additionally, we report well-constrained Ksw values for 23 PFAS and two sorbents.

One-pot fabrication of magnetic adsorbent based on polymeric ionic liquid/aminated carbon nanotubes composite for efficient capture of synthetic auxins in complex samples prior to chromatographic analysis

Efficient enrichment is a challenging and indispensable step in the quantification of polar synthetic auxins in complex samples. In the current study, a new magnetic adsorbent based on polymeric ionic liquid/aminated carbon nanotube composite was fabricated with a one-pot precipitation copolymerization strategy and employed as the extraction phase of magnetic solid phase extraction of synthetic auxins. Various characterization techniques were utilized to inspect the morphology, structure, magnetic property, and functional groups of the prepared adsorbent. Under the optimal conditions, the obtained adsorbent displayed satisfactory capture performance towards studied auxins through multiple interactions. Adsorption studies evidenced that the adsorption procedure of the developed method towards analytes was fit for the Freundlich adsorption model and pseudo-second-order kinetics. Combining with high-performance liquid chromatography, sensitive and reliable method for the identification and quantification of trace synthetic auxins in environmental water and fruit juice samples was developed. The obtained limits of detection for water and fruit juice samples located in the ranges of 0.0059-0.013 and 0.018-0.031 μg/L, respectively. Recoveries in actual samples with different fortified contents varied from 82.2% to 117%, with satisfactory reproducibility. The results will evidence that the introduced extraction technique is a useful alternative for the entrapment of trace synthetic auxins from complex samples.

Starch-Based Polymer Materials as Advanced Adsorbents for Sustainable Water Treatment: Current Status, Challenges, and Future Perspectives

Over the past three decades, chemical and biological water contamination has become a major concern, particularly in the industrialized world. Heavy metals, aromatic compounds, and dyes are among the harmful substances that contribute to water pollution, which jeopardies the human health. For this reason, it is of the utmost importance to locate methods for the cleanup of wastewater that are not genuinely effective. Owing to its non-toxicity, biodegradability, and biocompatibility, starch is a naturally occurring polysaccharide that scientists are looking into as a possible environmentally friendly material for sustainable water remediation. Starch could exhibit significant adsorption capabilities towards pollutants with the substitution of amide, amino, carboxyl, and other functional groups for hydroxyl groups. Starch derivatives may effectively remove contaminants such as oil, organic solvents, pesticides, heavy metals, dyes, and pharmaceutical pollutants by employing adsorption techniques at a rate greater than 90%. The maximal adsorption capacities of starch-based adsorbents for oil and organic solvents, pesticides, heavy metal ions, dyes, and pharmaceuticals are 13,000, 66, 2000, 25,000, and 782 mg/g, respectively. Although starch-based adsorbents have demonstrated a promising future for environmental wastewater treatment, additional research is required to optimize the technique before the starch-based adsorbent can be used in large-scale in situ wastewater treatment.

Polypyrrole Aerogels: Efficient Adsorbents of Cr(VI) Ions from Aqueous Solutions

Three-dimensional and porous polypyrrole (PPy) aerogels were prepared using a facile two-step procedure in which cryogels were synthesized via the cryopolymerization of pyrrole with iron (III) chloride in the presence of supporting water-soluble polymers (poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone), poly(vinyl alcohol), gelatin, methylcellulose or hydroxypropylcellulose), followed by freeze-drying to obtain aerogels. The choice of supporting polymers was found to affect the morphology, porosity, electrical conductivity, and mechanical properties of PPy aerogels. PPy aerogels were successfully used as adsorbents to remove toxic Cr(VI) ions from aqueous solutions.

Efficient Removal of Heavy Metals from Aqueous Solution Using Licorice Residue-Based Hydrogel Adsorbent

The removal of heavy metals through adsorption represents a highly promising method. This study focuses on the utilization of an abundant cellulose-rich solid waste, licorice residue (LR), as a natural material for hydrogel synthesis. To this end, LR-EPI hydrogels, namely, LR-EPI-5, LR-EPI-6 and LR-EPI-8, were developed by crosslinking LR with epichlorohydrin (EPI), specifically targeting the removal of Pb, Cu, and Cr from aqueous solutions. Thorough characterizations employing Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the successful crosslinking of LR-EPIs by EPI, resulting in the formation of porous and loosely structured hydrogels. Batch studies demonstrated the high efficacy of LR-EPI hydrogels in removing the three heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. Notably, LR-EPI-8 exhibited the highest adsorption capacity, with maximum capacities of 591.8 mg/g, 458.3 mg/g, and 121.4 mg/g for Pb²⁺, Cr³⁺, and Cu²⁺, respectively. The adsorption processes for Pb²⁺ and Cu²⁺ were well described by pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir model. The adsorption mechanism of LR-EPI-8 onto heavy metal ions was found to involve a combination of ion-exchange and electrostatic interactions, as inferred from the results obtained through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and FTIR. This research establishes LR-EPI-8 as a promising adsorbent for the effective removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions, offering an eco-friendly approach for heavy metal removal and providing an environmentally sustainable method for the reutilization of Chinese herb residues. It contributes to the goal of "from waste, treats waste" while also addressing the broader need for heavy metal remediation.

Multifunctional Hollow Porous Fe3O4@N-C Nanocomposites as Anodes of Lithium-Ion Battery, Adsorbents and Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrates

At present, it is still a challenge to prepare multifunctional composite nanomaterials with simple composition and favorable structure. Here, multifunctional Fe₃O₄@nitrogen-doped carbon (N-C) nanocomposites with hollow porous core-shell structure and significant electrochemical, adsorption and sensing performances were successfully synthesized through the hydrothermal method, polymer coating, then thermal annealing process in nitrogen (N₂) and lastly etching in hydrochloric acid (HCl). The morphologies and properties of the as-obtained Fe₃O₄@N-C nanocomposites were markedly affected by the etching time of HCl. When the Fe₃O₄@N-C nanocomposites after etching for 30 min (Fe₃O₄@N-C-3) were applied as the anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the invertible capacity could reach 1772 mA h g^-1 after 100 cycles at the current density of 0.2 A g^-1, which is much better than that of Fe₃O₄@N-C nanocomposites etched, respectively, for 15 min and 45 min (948 mA h g^-1 and 1127 mA h g^-1). Additionally, the hollow porous Fe₃O₄@N-C-3 nanocomposites also exhibited superior rate capacity (950 mA h g^-1 at 0.6 A g^-1). The excellent electrochemical properties of Fe₃O₄@N-C nanocomposites are attributed to their distinctive hollow porous core-shell structure and appropriate N-doped carbon coating, which could provide high-efficiency transmission channels for ions/electrons, improve the structural stability and accommodate the volume variation in the repeated Li insertion/extraction procedure. In addition, the Fe₃O₄@N-C nanocomposites etched by HCl for different lengths of time, especially Fe₃O₄@N-C-3 nanocomposites, also show good performance as adsorbents for the removal of the organic dye (methyl orange, MO) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates for the determination of a pesticide (thiram). This work provides reference for the design and preparation of multifunctional materials with peculiar pore structure and uncomplicated composition.

Hydrogen sulfide removal from normal heptane using zinc oxide, silicon dioxide and zeolite 13X: adsorption capacity, kinetics, selectivity, breakthrough and regeneration

This article focuses on the H2S adsorption from normal heptane (nC7) as synthetic natural gas liquids (NGL) using ZnO, SiO2 and zeolite 13X in static mode. Results of the isotherm and kinetics of the investigated adsorbents for H2S adsorption under ambient condition showed that ZnO had the highest H2S adsorption capacity between 260 and 700 mgH2S.g-1 in the initial concentration range of 2500 and 7500 ppmH2S with an equilibrium time of less than 30 minutes. Additionally, the ZnO selectivity was greater than 3.16. In continued, H2S removal from nC7 with ZnO was examined in dynamic mode. The H2S breakthrough time for ZnO reduced from 210 to 25 minutes as weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) was increased from 5 to 20 h-1 at 30 bar. Also, the breakthrough time at 30 bar was about 2.5 times greater than that at atmospheric pressure. Furthermore, H2S/CO2 mixture (i.e., 1000 ppmH2S + 1000 ppmCO2) caused the H2S breakthrough time to increase approximately by 1.11-fold. Alternatively, the ZnO regeneration conditions with hot stagnant air were optimized at different initial H2S concentrations (1000 ~ 3000 ppmH2S) using the Box-Behnken design. For instance, ZnO contaminated with 1000 ppmH2S was regenerated with an efficiency of more than 98 % for 160 minutes at 285 °C.

Eco-Friendly Recycling of Lithium Batteries for Extraction of High-Purity Metals

The significant increase in lithium batteries consumption produces a significant quantity of discarded lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). On the one hand, the shortage of high-grade ores leads to the necessity of processing low-grade ores, which contain a low percentage of valuable metals in comparison to the discarded LIBs that contain a high percentage of these metals, which enhances the processing of the discarded LIBs. On the other hand, the processing of discarded LIBs reduces the negative environmental effects that result from their storage and the harmful elements contained in their composition. Hence, the current study aims at developing cost-effective and ecofriendly technology for cobalt and lithium metal ion recovery based on discarded LIBs. A novel synthesized solid-phase adsorbent (TZAB) was utilized for the selective removal of cobalt from synthetic solutions and spent LIBs. The synthesized TZAB adsorbent was characterized by using 13C-NMR, GC-MS, FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and TGA. The factors affecting the adsorption of cobalt and lithium ions from synthetic solutions and spent LIBs, including the sorbent dose, pH, contact time, temperature, and cobalt concentration were investigated. The conditions surrounding the recovery of cobalt and lithium from processing discarded LIBs, were investigated to optimize the maximum recovery. The Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm models were used to study the kinetics of the adsorption process. The obtained results showed that high-purity CoC₂O₄ and Li₃PO₄ were obtained with a purity of 95% and 98.3% and a percent recovery of 93.48% and 95.76%, respectively. The maximum recovery of Co(II) from synthetic solutions was obtained at C₀ = 500 mg·L^-1, dose of 0.08 g, pH 7.5, T = 25 °C, and reaction time = 90 min. The collected data from Langmuir's isotherm and the adsorption processes of Co agree with the data predicted by the D-R isotherm models, which shows that the adsorption of Co(II) onto the TZAB seems to be chemisorption, and the results agree with the Langmuir and D-R isotherm models.

Characteristics of Adsorption/Desorption Process on Dolomite Adsorbent in the Copper(II) Removal from Aqueous Solutions

The removal of hazardous heavy metals that have been released into the environment due to industrial activities has become an important issue in recent years. The presented study concerned the removal of copper(II) ions from aqueous solutions using dolomites. Dolomite is a very attractive adsorbent due to its wide availability, low cost, good adsorption, and environmental compatibility. The paper describes the properties of D-I and D-II dolomites from two different open-cast mines in Poland. The properties of natural adsorbents were determined based on point of zero charges (PZC), elemental analysis of the adsorbent composition, FT-IR, XRD, and SEM spectra analysis. Depending on the initial concentration of the solution used, the adsorption efficiency of copper(II) ions was 58-80% for D-I and 80-97% for D-II. The adsorption mechanism in the case of D-II dolomite was mainly based on ion exchange, while chemisorption dominated the D-I dolomite surface. Considering the possibility of the regeneration and reuse of the adsorbent, dolomite D-II is a better material (the desorption efficiency of copper(II) ions was 58-80%). The adsorption behavior of dolomites has been described using six adsorption isotherms. The best fit was obtained for the Redlich-Peterson, Jovanović, and Langmuir isotherms, indicating that monolayer adsorption occurred. The maximum adsorption capacity for copper(II) was 378 mg/g of D-I and 308 mg/g of D-II.

Magnetic Biochar Derived from Fenton Sludge/CMC for High-Efficiency Removal of Pb(II): Synthesis, Application, and Mechanism

Magnetic biochar composites (MBC) were developed by a simple one-step pyrolysis method using Fenton sludge waste solid and carboxymethyl cellulose sodium. Detailed morphological, chemical, and magnetic characterizations corroborate the successful fabrication of MBC. Batch adsorption experiments show that the synthesized MBC owns high-efficiency removal of Pb(II), accompanied by ease-of-separation from aqueous solution using magnetic field. The experiment shows that the equilibrium adsorption capacity of MBC for Pb(II) can reach 199.9 mg g^-1, corresponding to a removal rate of 99.9%, and the maximum adsorption capacity (q_m) reaches 570.7 mg g^-1, which is significantly better than that of the recently reported magnetic similar materials. The adsorption of Pb(II) by MBC complies with the pseudo second-order equation and Langmuir isotherm model, and the adsorption is a spontaneous, endothermic chemical process. Investigations on the adsorption mechanism show that the combination of Pb(II) with the oxygen-containing functional groups (carboxyl, hydroxyl, etc.) on biochar with a higher specific surface area are the decisive factors. The merits of reusing solid waste resource, namely excellent selectivity, easy separation, and simple preparation make the MBC a promising candidate of Pb(II) purifier.

The Development of Alginate/Ag NPs/Caffeic Acid Composite Membranes as Adsorbents for Water Purification

Since the water pollution problem still affects the environmental system and human health, the need to develop innovative membranes has become imperious. Lately, researchers have focused on developing novel materials to help diminish the contamination problem. The aim of present research was to obtain innovative adsorbent composite membranes based on a biodegradable polymer, alginate, to remove toxic pollutants. Of all pollutants, lead was chosen due to its high toxicity. The composite membranes were successfully obtained through a direct casting method. The silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and caffeic acid (CA) from the composite membranes were kept at low concentrations, which proved enough to bestow antimicrobial activity to the alginate membrane. The obtained composite membranes were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and microscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DSC). Swelling behaviour, lead ion (Pb²⁺) removal capacity, regeneration and reusability were also determined. Further, the antimicrobial activity was tested against selected pathogenic strains (S. aureus, E. faecalis sp., P. aeruginosa, E. coli and C. albicans). The presence of Ag NPs and CA improves the antimicrobial activity of the newly developed membranes. Overall, the composite membranes are suitable for complex water treatment (removal of heavy metal ions and antimicrobial treatment).

Effect of Chemical Refining on the Reduction of β-Carboline Content in Sesame Seed Oil

β-carbolines (harman and norharman) are potentially mutagenic and have been reported in some vegetable oils. Sesame seed oil is obtained from roasted sesame seeds. During sesame oil processing, roasting is the key procedure to aroma enhancement, in which β-carbolines are produced. Pressed sesame seed oils cover most market share, while leaching solvents are used to extract oils from the pressed sesame cake to improve the utilization of the raw materials. β-carbolines are nonpolar heterocyclic aromatic amines with good solubility in leaching solvents (n-hexane); therefore, the β-carbolines in sesame cake migrated to the leaching sesame seed oil. The refining procedures are indispensable for leaching sesame seed oil, in which some small molecules can be reduced. Thus, the critical aim is to evaluate the changes in β-carboline content during the refining of leaching sesame seed oil and the key process steps for the removal of β-carbolines. In this work, the levels of β-carbolines (harman and norharman) in sesame seed oil during chemical refining processes (degumming, deacidification, bleaching and deodorization) have been determined using solid phase extraction and high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The results indicated that in the entire refining process, the levels of total β-carbolines greatly decreased, and the adsorption decolorization was the most effective process in reducing β-carbolines, which might be related to the adsorbent used in the decolorization process. In addition, the effects of adsorbent type, adsorbent dosage and blended adsorbent on β-carbolines in sesame seed oil during the decolorization process were investigated. It was concluded that oil refining can not only improve the quality of sesame seed oil, but also reduce most of the harmful β-carbolines.

Unexpected Penetration of CO Molecule into Zeolitic Micropores Almost Plugged by CuCl via π-Complexation of CO-CuCl

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a key reactant in several Fischer-Tropsch processes, including those used in light olefin and methanol syntheses. However, it is highly toxic and causes serious poisoning of noble metal catalysts. Thus, a solid adsorbent that can selectively capture CO, especially at low concentrations, is required. In this study, zeolite Y-based adsorbents in which Cu(I) ions occupy the supercage cation sites (CuCl/Y) are prepared via solid-state ion exchange. Volumetric adsorption measurements reveal that the Cu(I) ions significantly enhance CO adsorption in the low-pressure range by π-complexation. Furthermore, unexpected molecular sieving behavior, with extremely high CO/CO₂ selectivity, is observed when excess CuCl homogeneously covers the zeolite pore structures. Thus, although CO has a larger kinetic diameter, it can penetrate the zeolite supercage while smaller molecules (i.e., Ar and CO₂) cannot. Density functional theory calculations reveal that CO molecules can remain adsorbed in pseudoblocked pores by CuCl, thanks to the strong interaction of C 2p and Cu 3d states, resulting in the high CO/CO₂ selectivity. One of the prepared adsorbents, CuCl/Y with 50 wt % CuCl, is capable of selectively capturing 3.04 mmol g^-1 of CO with a CO/CO₂ selectivity of >3370.

Biomass Derived, Hierarchically Porous, Activated Starbons® as Adsorbents for Volatile Organic Compounds

The use of potassium hydroxide activated Starbons® derived from starch and alginic acid as adsorbents for 29 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was investigated. In every case, the alginic acid derived Starbon (A800K2) was found to be the optimal adsorbent, significantly outperforming both commercial activated carbon and starch derived, activated Starbon (S800K2). The saturated adsorption capacity of A800K2 depends on both the size of the VOC and the functional groups it contains. The highest saturated adsorption capacities were obtained with small VOCs. For VOC's of similar size, the presence of polarizable electrons in lone pairs or π-bonds within non-polar VOCs was beneficial. Analysis of porosimetry data suggests that the VOC's are being adsorbed within the pore structure of A800K2 rather than just on its surface. The adsorption was completely reversible by thermal treatment of the saturated Starbon under vacuum.

Preparation of Molybdenum Disulfide with Different Nanostructures and Its Adsorption Performance for Copper (Ⅱ) Ion in Water

The environmental problems in the world are attracting increasing amounts of attention, and heavy metal pollution in the water has become one of the focuses of the ecological environment. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) has excellent adsorption performance because of its extremely high specific surface area and unique active site structure, which has attracted an increasing amount of attention in the field of heavy metal disposal in various types of water. In this paper, two sorts of MoS₂ nanoparticles, spherical and lamellar, were synthesized by different chemical methods. Their morphology and structure were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and a Raman spectrometer. The adsorption properties of two sorts of MoS₂ nanoparticles for copper (Ⅱ) ions in water were investigated by changing the pH value, adsorption time, initial concentration of solution, adsorption temperature, etc. Finally, the adsorption mechanism was analyzed by kinetic, isothermal, and thermodynamic models. The results show that two microstructures of MoS₂ nanoparticles can be used as efficient adsorption materials for removing heavy metal ions from water, although there are differences in adsorption capacity between them, which expands the theoretical basis of heavy metal adsorption in a water environment.

Preparation of Amphiphilic Chitosan-Loaded Bentonite Adsorbent and Its Performance in Removing Organic Matter from Coking Wastewater

An amphiphilic chitosan-loaded bentonite adsorbent (C18CTS-BT) was prepared for the efficient removal of organic matter from coking wastewater. The structure and surface morphology of adsorbents were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, and SEM. The removal of those organics by C18CTS-BT was investigated by comparing the adsorption performances of C18CTS-BT with bentonite (BT) and chitosan-loaded bentonite (CTS-BT). The results showed that compared with BT and CTS-BT, C18CTS-BT showed the performance advantages of having a low dosage, wide pH range, and short adsorption equilibrium time. The optimized treatment process was as follows: the adsorbent dosage was 1.5 g·L^-1, the adsorption time was 60 min, and the pH of the system was 7.0. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the coking wastewater treated with BT, CTS-BT, and C18CTS-BT decreased from 342 mg·L^-1 in the raw water to 264 mg·L^-1, 218 mg·L^-1, and 146 mg·L^-1, corresponding to COD removal rates of 22.81%, 36.26%, and 57.31%, respectively. The results of GC-MS analysis also confirmed that C18CTS-BT could remove most of the organic compounds in coking wastewater, especially long-chain alkanes and their derivatives. The hydrophobic modification of the adsorbent material can effectively improve the removal performance of organic compounds from coking wastewater.

Lanthanum-loaded peanut shell biochar prepared via one-step pyrolysis method for phosphorus removal and immobilization

Phosphorus (P) is a nutrient element triggering eutrophication. Therefore, the removal of excess phosphorus has become an emergent demand. In this study, lanthanum-loaded biochar (La-BC) was prepared via a simple one-step pyrolysis method. Its surface properties and structural characteristics were analyzed by SEM, XRD, FTIR and pH_pzc. The phosphate removal by the La-BC was systematically investigated in batch mode. Results showed that the phosphorus adsorption obeyed the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm. The calculated maximum adsorption capacities were 31.94, 33.06 and 33.98 mg/g at 25, 35 and 45°C, respectively. Except for SO₄^2- and CO₃^2-, phosphate adsorption by the La-BC showed strong anti-interference to coexisting ions. For real water samples, the phosphate concentrations in the effluents were below 0.02 mg/L after treatment. The P loaded the La-BC was difficult to be desorbed, suggesting that the La-BC was not only a P-capping agent but also a P-immobilizing agent. More interestingly, a large number of stable LaPO₄ nanofibers were formed on the La-BC surface via the reaction between the dissolved phosphate anions and La(OH)₃ loaded on the adsorbent. Their intertwining facilitated the formation of the floc, which was conducive to the solid-liquid separation. Hence, the developed La-BC can be used as a potential adsorbent for natural waterbody remediation.

Efficacy of Bentonite and Fumonisin Esterase in Mitigating the Effects of Aflatoxins and Fumonisins in Two Kenyan Cattle Breeds

The objective of the study was to investigate the efficacy of bentonite and fumonisin esterase, separately or combined, in mitigating the effects of aflatoxins (AF) and fumonisins (FUM) in Boran and Friesian-Boran crossbreed cattle. These effects were studied by measuring mycotoxins, their metabolites, and biomarkers that relate to animal health, productivity, and food safety. The study was divided into three experiments each lasting for 2 weeks. Cows in experiment 1 received in random order aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) [788 μg/cow/day (69.7 μg/kg dry matter intake (DMI)) for Borans and 2,310 μg/cow/day (154 μg/kg DMI) for crossbreeds], bentonite (60 g/cow/day), or both AFB1 and bentonite. Boran cows in experiment 2 received in random order FUM (12.4 mg/cow/day (1.1 mg/kg DMI)), fumonisin esterase (120 U/cow/day), or both FUM and fumonisin esterase. Boran cows in experiment 3 received in random order AFB1 (952 μg/cow/day (84.2 μg/kg DMI)) + FUM (30.4 mg/cow/day (2.7 mg/kg DMI)), bentonite (60 g/cow/day) + fumonisin esterase (120 U/cow/day), or both AFB1 + FUM and bentonite + fumonisin esterase. Feeding AFB1 and/or FUM contaminated feed with or without the addition of the detoxifiers for 14 days did not affect DMI, milk composition, hematology, and blood biochemical parameters. The addition of bentonite in a diet contaminated with AFB1 led to a decrease in milk aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) concentration of 30% and 43%, with the carry-over subsequently decreasing from 0.35% to 0.20% and 0.08% to 0.06% for crosses and Borans, respectively. No significant change was observed in the sphinganine/sphingosine (Sa/So) ratio following feeding with FUM alone or in combination with fumonisin esterase; however, the ability of fumonisin esterase to hydrolyze FUM into less toxic fully hydrolyzed FUM and partially hydrolyzed FUM was evident in the rumen fluid and feces. These results indicate bentonite was effective in decreasing AFM1 concentration in milk, and AFB1 and AFM1 in plasma, while fumonisin esterase can convert FUM into less toxic metabolites and can be a suitable addition to feed cocontaminated with AFB1 and FUM.

Cd2+ and Zn2+ Complexes with 2,4,6-Tri(2-pyridyl)-s-Triazine and Terephthalate for Rapid, High-Capacity Adsorption of Congo Red

Three crystal complexes were designed and synthesised through the solvothermal method, with Cu²⁺ , Zn²⁺ , and Cd²⁺ ions as the metal centres and 2,4,6-tri(2-pyridyl)-s-triazine (TPTZ) and terephthalate (BDC^2- ) as the ligands. Their compositions were determined to be Cd(TPTZ)Cl₂ (Cd-MOF), {[Zn(TPTZ)(BDC)] ⋅ 3H₂ O}_n (Zn-MOF), and Cu₂ (PCA)₂ (BDC)(H₂ O)₂ (Cu-MOF) (PCA^- =2-pyridinium amide), respectively. Cd-MOF can adsorb 90 % of Congo red (CR) in 10 s at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, and CR removal was complete at 20 s over a wide pH range. The adsorption capacity for CR reached 1440 mg g^-1 in 5 min. Selective adsorption was demonstrated in mixed dyes. The adsorption kinetic data agree well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The Temkin model was successfully used to evaluate the adsorption isotherms of CR on Cd-MOF at room temperature, suggesting that adsorption occurs through a hybrid of monolayer and multilayer mechanisms.

Evaluation of the Adsorption Efficacy of Bentonite on Aflatoxin M(1) Levels in Contaminated Milk

The existence of aflatoxin M₁ (AFM₁) in raw milk results in economic losses and public health risks. This research aims to examine the capability of bentonite to adsorb and/or eliminate AFM₁ from various raw milk types. In addition, the effects of numerous bentonites (HAFR 1, 2, 3 and 4) on the nutritional characteristics of the milk were studied. Our findings revealed that goat milk had the highest value of AFM₁ (490.30 ng/L) in comparison to other milks. AFM₁ adsorption was influenced by applying bentonite (0.5 and 1 g) in a concentration-dependent manner for different time intervals (from 0 to 12 h). The percentage of AFM₁ reached the maximum adsorption level after 12 h to 100, 98.5 and 98% for bentonites HAFR 3, 1 and 2, respectively. HAFR 3 (1 g bentonite) presented higher adsorption efficiency than other bentonites used in the phosphate buffer saline (PBS) and milk. Residual levels of AFM₁ reached their lowest values of 0 and 1.5 ng/L while using HAFR 3 in PBS and milk, respectively. With regard to the influence of bentonite on the nutritional characteristics of milk, there was an increase in fat, protein and solid non-fat ratio while using HAFR 3 and 4, yet decreased lactose in comparison with the control. Scanning Electron Microscopy and Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy both identified bentonites as superior AFM₁ binders. The results demonstrated that bentonite, particularly HAFR 3, was the most effective adsorbent and could thus be a promising candidate for the decontamination of AFM₁ in milk.

Optimization of Process and Formulation Variables for Semha-Pinas Extract Effervescent Tablets Using the Box-Behnken Design

Semha-Pinas (SHPN) is a Thai traditional herbal formula used as an expectorant. Its traditional dosage form is pills, which are dispersed in water before use. The development of this recipe to effervescent tablets could enhance patient convenience with shortened the time needed to disintegrate the active ingredients. This work aimed to develop SHPN extract effervescent tablets based on process and formulation optimization using the Box-Behnken design. Four levels of three independent variables, including a compressional force, a quantity of effervescent base, and a quantity of fumed silica, were screened using the one factor at a time method. Three levels of each independent variable were included in the Box-Behnken design, including 1000 - 2000 psi, 46 - 52%, and 1.67 - 3.33%, respectively. Four responses were monitored, including tablet thickness, hardness, disintegration time, and friability. In terms of design space, the results showed that the tablet hardness was not less than 5 kP, disintegration time was not more than 5 min, and friability was not more than 1% found when 2000 psi compressional force was used. The optimal parameters were a compressional force of 2000 psi, effervescent base of 50%, and fumed silica of 2.5%. This formulation had a tablet weight of 598.86 ± 0.05 mg, a diameter of 12.68 ± 0.01 mm, a thickness of 3.67 ± 0.01 mm, a hardness of 5.57 ± 0.22 kP, a disintegration time of 1.68 ± 0.04 min, and friability of 0.43 ± 0.02%. In conclusion, this work succeeded in developing SHPN extract effervescent tablets with desired properties that were easy to use. Furthermore, the time needed to disintegrate the active ingredients was decreased when compared with the traditional dosage form due to being easily dissolved in water.

Biochar as Sustainable Alternative and Green Adsorbent for the Remediation of Noxious Pollutants: A Comprehensive Review

The current water crisis necessitates the development of new materials for wastewater treatment. A variety of nanomaterials are continuously being investigated for their potential as adsorbents for environmental remediation. Researchers intend to develop a low-cost, simple, and sustainable material that can cater to removal of pollutants. Biochar derived from biowaste is a potential candidate for the existing problem of water pollution. The review focuses on the various aspects of biochar, such as its sources, preparation methods, mechanism, applications for wastewater treatment, and its regeneration. Compared with other adsorbents, biochar is considered as an environmentally friendly, sustainable, and cost-effective substitute for waste management, climate protection, soil improvement, wastewater treatment, etc. The special properties of biochar such as porosity, surface area, surface charge, and functional groups can be easily modified by various chemical methods, resulting in improved adsorption properties. Therefore, in view of the increasing environmental pollution and the problems encountered by researchers in treating pollutants, biochar is of great importance. This review also highlights the challenges and prospective areas that can be explored and studied in more detail in the future.

Preparation of Hydrogarnet/Poly(Lactic Acid) Composite Adsorbents for Humic Substance Removal

Humic substances are constituents of organic matter that require removal from water environments because of their adverse ecological and sanitation effects. A mixture of hydrogarnet and poly(lactic acid) dissolved in chloroform was electrospun to prepare a composite as a adsorbent for humic substance removal. Here, humic acid was used as the model substance for evaluating the adsorbent's water remediation efficiency. Despite the hydrogarnet particles being embedded in its poly(lactic acid) fibers, the composites demonstrated a higher humic acid removal ability than the pure poly(lactic acid) sample prepared using an electrospinning process. Pores were introduced to the fiber surfaces of the composite by controlling the relative humidity during electrospinning, thus enhancing their humic acid removal ability (4.6 ± 2.4 mg/g), compared to the composite consisting of the fibers without pores (1.2 ± 0.9 mg/g).

Cage-Based Covalent Organic Framework for the Effective and Efficient Removal of Malachite Green from Wastewater

A cage-covalent organic framework (COF)-TP {T = bis(tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine); P = piperazine}, a novel two-dimensional covalent organic skeleton substituted with a nucleophilic cyanuric chloride analogue, was synthesized by a simple polymerization process. Cage-COF-TP is advantageous owing to its good structural order, permanent porosity, and low preparation cost. This skeleton was employed as a cost-effective adsorbent for the intermittent adsorption of an organic dye from aqueous solutions. Adsorption experiments were carried out at different initial dye concentrations, contact times, and solution pH. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second order model, and the results of thermodynamic studies were consistent with the Langmuir isotherm model. The high degree of matching between the size and shape of malachite green (MG) and the shrunken channels present in Cage-COF-TP were responsible for the enhanced adsorption ability of this material. Furthermore, theoretical calculations indicated that the high adsorption of the studied adsorbent can be attributed to the presence of nitrogen-rich triazine units in the Cage-COF-TP, which are expected to strengthen its affinity to guest molecules. The obtained results showed that the developed adsorbent is an efficient adsorbent that is theoretically capable of stimulating the removal of ∼2000 mg/g MG from wastewater at ambient temperature. This study will therefore be expected to promote the development of new functional materials based on COFs.
