Microzone-Acidification-Driven Degradation Mechanism of the NiFe-Based Anode in Seawater Electrolysis

The anode stability is critical for efficient and reliable seawater electrolyzers. Herein, a NiFe-based film catalyst was prepared by anodic oxidation to serve as a model electrode, which exhibited a satisfactory oxygen evolution performance in simulated alkaline seawater (1 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl) with an overpotential of 348 mV at 100 mA cm-2 and a long-term stability of over 100 h. After that, the effects of the current density and bulk pH of the electrolyte on its stability were evaluated. It was found that the electrode stability was sensitive to electrolysis conditions, failing at 20 mA cm-2 in 0.1 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl but over 500 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl. The electrode dissolved, and some precipitates immediately formed at the region very close to the electrode surface during the electrolysis. This can be ascribed to the pH difference between the electrode/electrolyte interface and the bulk electrolyte under anodic polarization. In other words, the microzone acidification accelerates the corrosion of the electrode by Cl-, thus affecting the electrode stability. The operational performances of the electrode under different electrolysis conditions were classified to further analyze the degradation behavior, which resulted in three regions corresponding to the stable oxygen evolution, violent dissolution-precipitation, and complete passivation processes, respectively. Thereby increasing the bulk pH could alleviate the microzone acidification and improve the stability of the anode at high current densities. Overall, this study provides new insights into understanding the degradation mechanism of NiFe-based catalysts and offers electrolyte engineering strategies for the application of anodes.

Fluoxetine removal by anodic oxidation using different anode materials and graphite cathode

Fluoxetine (FLX) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) medication commonly used to treat mental health disorders, but it can be harmful to the environment if not properly disposed of due to incomplete metabolism. In this study, electrochemical anodic oxidation with mixed metal oxide anodes was studied as a method to remove FLX from water and wastewater. Iridium dioxide-coated titanium (Ti/IrO2) and ruthenium dioxide-coated Ti (Ti/RuO2) electrodes were found to be more effective than platinum-coated Ti (Ti/Pt) electrodes, with removal efficiencies of 91.5% and 93.9%, respectively. Optimal conditions for FLX removal were determined to be an applied current of 150 mA, initial pH of 5, and oxidation time of 120 min. The rate of FLX degradation (kFLX) for the Ti/Pt, Ti/IrO2, and Ti/RuO2 electrodes were determined to be 0.0081 min-1 (R2:0,8161), 0.0163 min-1 (R2:0,9823), and 0.0168 (R2:0,9901) min-1 for 25 mg/L initial FLX concentration, respectively. The kFLX values varied based on the initial FLX concentration and decreased as the initial FLX concentration increased. The specific energy consumption (SEC) after 120 min of operation was 51.0 kWh/m3 for the Ti/Pt electrode, 39.6 kWh/m3 for the Ti/IrO2 electrode, and 48.6 kWh/m3 for the Ti/RuO2 electrode under optimised conditions. Overall, electrochemical anodic oxidation is an effective method for removing FLX from water and wastewater, with Ti/IrO2 and Ti/RuO2 electrodes providing superior performance compared to Ti/Pt electrodes.

Morphology of Nanostructured Tantalum Oxide Controls Stem Cell Differentiation and Improves Corrosion Behavior

Tantalum is receiving increasing attention in the biomedical field due to its biocompatible nature and superior mechanical properties. However, the bioinert nature of tantalum still poses a challenge and limits its integration into the bone tissue. To address these issues, we fabricated nanotubular (NT), nanocoral (NC), and nanodimple morphologies on tantalum surfaces via anodization. The size of these nanofeatures was engineered to be approximately 30 nm for all anodized samples. Thus, the influence of the anodized nanostructured morphology on the chemical and biological properties of tantalum was evaluated. The NT and NC samples exhibited higher surface roughness, surface energy, and hydrophilicity compared to the nonanodized samples. In addition, the NT samples exhibited the highest corrosion resistance among all of the investigated samples. Biological experiments indicated that NT and NC samples promoted human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cell (hADMSC) spreading and proliferation up to 5 days in vitro. ALP, COL1A1, and OSC gene expressions as well as calcium mineral synthesis were upregulated on the NT and NC samples in the second and third weeks in vitro. These findings highlight the significance of nanostructured feature morphology for anodized tantalum, where the NT morphology was shown to be a potential candidate for orthopedic applications.

Impact of Anodic Oxidation Reactions in the Performance Evaluation of High-Rate CO2 /CO Electrolysis

The membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) approach appears to be the most promising technique to realize the high-rate CO2 /CO electrolysis, however there are major challenges related to the crossover of ions and liquid products from cathode to anode via the membrane and the concomitant anodic oxidation reactions (AORs). In this perspective, by combining experimental and theoretical analyses, several impacts of anodic oxidation of liquid products in terms of performance evaluation are investigated. First, the crossover behavior of several typical liquid products through an anion-exchange membrane is analyzed. Subsequently, two instructive examples (introducing formate or ethanol oxidation during electrolysis) reveals that the dynamic change of the anolyte (i.e., pH and composition) not only brings a slight shift of anodic potentials (i.e., change of competing reactions), but also affects the chemical stability of the anode catalyst. Anodic oxidation of liquid products can also cause either over- or under-estimation of the Faradaic efficiency, leading to an inaccurate assessment of overall performance. To comprehensively understand fundamentals of AORs, a theoretical guideline with hierarchical indicators is further developed to predict and regulate the possible AORs in an electrolyzer. The perspective concludes by giving some suggestions on rigorous performance evaluations for high-rate CO2 /CO electrolysis in an MEA-based setup.

Anodic Oxidation of Tungsten under Illumination-Multi-Method Characterization and Modeling at the Molecular Level

Tungsten oxide has received considerable attention as photo-anode in photo-assisted water splitting due to its considerable advantages such as significant light absorption in the visible region, good catalytic properties, and stability in acidic and oxidative conditions. The present paper is a first step in a detailed study of the mechanism of porous WO3 growth via anodic oxidation. In-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS) during oxidation of W illuminated with UV and visible light are employed to study the ionic and electronic processes in slightly acidic sulfate-fluoride electrolytes and a range of potentials 4-10 V. The respective responses are discussed in terms of the influence of fluoride addition on ionic and electronic process rates. A kinetic model is proposed and parameterized via regression of experimental data to the EIS and IMPS transfer functions.

Antibacterial Structure Design of Porous Ti6Al4V by 3D Printing and Anodic Oxidation

Titanium alloy Ti6Al4V is a commonly used bone implant material, primarily prepared as a porous material to better match the elastic modulus of human bone. However, titanium alloy is biologically inert and does not have antibacterial properties. At the same time, the porous structure with a large specific surface area also increases the risk of infection, leading to surgical failure. In this paper, we prepared three porous samples with different porosities of 60%, 75%, and 85%, respectively (for short, 3D-60, 3D-75, and 3D-85) using 3D printing technology and clarified the mechanical properties. Through tensile experiments, when the porosity was 60%, the compressive modulus was within the elastic modulus of human bone. Anodic oxidation technology carried out the surface modification of a 3D-printed porous titanium alloy with 60% porosity. Through change, the different voltages and times on the TiO2 oxide layer on the 3D-printed porous titanium alloy are different, and it reveals the growth mechanism of the TiO2 oxide layer on a 3D-printed unique titanium alloy. The surface hydrophilic and antibacterial properties of 3D-printed porous titanium alloy were significantly improved after modification by anodic oxidation.

"Nano Lab" Advanced Characterization Platform for Studying Electrocatalytic Iridium Nanoparticles Dispersed on TiOxNy Supports Prepared on Ti Transmission Electron Microscopy Grids

Aiming at speeding up the discovery and understanding of promising electrocatalysts, a novel experimental platform, i.e., the Nano Lab, is introduced. It is based on state-of-the-art physicochemical characterization and atomic-scale tracking of individual synthesis steps as well as subsequent electrochemical treatments targeting nanostructured composites. This is provided by having the entire experimental setup on a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) grid. Herein, the oxygen evolution reaction nanocomposite electrocatalyst, i.e., iridium nanoparticles dispersed on a high-surface-area TiO_xN_y support prepared on the Ti TEM grid, is investigated. By combining electrochemical concepts such as anodic oxidation of TEM grids, floating electrode-based electrochemical characterization, and identical location TEM analysis, relevant information from the entire composite's cycle, i.e., from the initial synthesis step to electrochemical operation, can be studied. We reveal that Ir nanoparticles as well as the TiO_xN_y support undergo dynamic changes during all steps. The most interesting findings made possible by the Nano Lab concept are the formation of Ir single atoms and only a small decrease in the N/O ratio of the TiO_xN_y-Ir catalyst during the electrochemical treatment. In this way, we show that the precise influence of the nanoscale structure, composition, morphology, and electrocatalyst's locally resolved surface sites can be deciphered on the atomic level. Furthermore, the Nano Lab's experimental setup is compatible with ex situ characterization and other analytical methods, such as Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and identical location scanning electron microscopy, hence providing a comprehensive understanding of structural changes and their effects. Overall, an experimental toolbox for the systematic development of supported electrocatalysts is now at hand.

LABS: Laboratory Automation and Batch Scheduling - A Modular Open Source Python Program for the Control of Automated Electrochemical Synthesis with a Web Interface

With LABS, an open source Python-based lab software is established that enables users to orchestrate automated synthesis setups. The software consists of a user-friendly frontend for data input and system monitoring. A flexible backend architecture enables the integration of multiple lab devices. The software allows users to easily modify experimental parameters or routines and switch between different lab devices. Compared to previously published projects, we aim to provide a more widely applicable and easily customizable automation software for any experimental setup. The usefulness of this tool was demonstrated in the oxidative coupling of 2,4-dimethylphenol to the corresponding 2,2'-biphenol. In this context, the suitable electrolysis parameters for flow electrolysis were optimized by way of design of experiments.

Electrochemical Oxidation of Organic Pollutants in Aqueous Solution Using a Ti4O7 Particle Anode

Anodes based on substoichiometric titanium oxide (Ti₄O₇) are among the most effective for the anodic oxidation of organic pollutants in aqueous solutions. Such electrodes can be made in the form of semipermeable porous structures called reactive electrochemical membranes (REMs). Recent work has shown that REMs with large pore sizes (0.5-2 mm) are highly efficient (comparable or superior to boron-doped diamond (BDD) anodes) and can be used to oxidize a wide range of contaminants. In this work, for the first time, a Ti₄O₇ particle anode (with a granule size of 1-3 mm and forming pores of 0.2-1 mm) was used for the oxidation of benzoic, maleic and oxalic acids and hydroquinone in aqueous solutions with an initial COD of 600 mg/L. The results demonstrated that a high instantaneous current efficiency (ICE) of about 40% and a high removal degree of more than 99% can be achieved. The Ti₄O₇ anode showed good stability after 108 operating hours at 36 mA/cm².

Controlled self-cleaning aluminum surfaces mediated by anodic aluminum oxide

Special porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes are created on Al in a phosphonic acid electrolyte solution through one-step anodic oxidation and modified with polydimethysiloxane using a vapor deposition technique. In this context, the anodic oxidation time is tuned during its process. As such, the Al surface's wettability, and self-cleaning property are controlled by the tunable anodic oxidation time, for the anodic oxidation, time can regulate the structure of the AAO and the proportion of the air-liquid interface.

An Experimental Anodized Titanium Surface for Transgingival Dental Implant Elements-Preliminary Report

The characteristics such as microtopography, physical and chemical properties influence the behavior of an implant in a soft tissue. Anodization-as a potent method of titanium alloy surface modification-of the transgingival abutment or healing screw, has achieved some improvement. One of the possible surface treatment method is low-pressure radiofrequency oxygen plasma treatment. The aim of the study was to evaluate the chemical properties and cytocompatibility of the experimental surface. Titanium discs made of grade-23 titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) anodized (A sample) with different voltage parameters (28, 67, 78, and 98 V) were included in the study. Half of the samples regarded as the "S" group were additionally treated with low-pressure radiofrequency oxygen plasma treatment. The surfaces were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, and electrochemically investigated via a corrosion test. Furthermore, two cell lines were used, including the CHO-compatible reference line and a primary human fibroblast line for the MTT assay; direct (contact) cytotoxicity of the materials was tested with the cells, and the growth of fibroblasts on the surfaces of the different materials was tested. The morphology of the "S"-treated samples did not differ from the morphology of only-anodized samples. However, the oxygen concentration on the surface in that group slightly increased by about 1% as a result of post-trial treatment. The highest corrosion resistance was observed for both A-78 V and S-78 V samples. The cytotoxicity assay revealed no changes in cell morphology or vitality. The MTT test proved comparable culture viability among all groups; however, the "S" samples showed statistically significantly higher fibroblast proliferation and adhesion scores compared to the "A" samples. Through the in vitro study, the low-pressure radiofrequency oxygen plasma treatment of the anodized Ti-6Al-4V alloy presented itself as an auspicious option in the field of transgingival element surface modification of implants.

Mechanistic Aspects of the Electrochemical Oxidation of Aliphatic Amines and Aniline Derivatives

The electrochemical oxidation of amines is an essential alternative to the conventional chemical transformation that provides critical routes for synthesising and modifying a wide range of chemically useful molecules, including pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. As a result, the anodic reactivity of these compounds has been extensively researched over the past seven decades. However, the different mechanistic aspects of the electrochemical oxidation of amines have never been discussed from a comprehensive and general point of view. This review examines the oxidation mechanism of aliphatic amines, amides, aniline and aniline derivatives, carbamates, and lactams, either directly oxidised at different electrode surfaces or indirectly oxidised by a reversible redox molecule, in which the reactive form was generated in situ. The mechanisms are compared and simplified to understand all possible pathways for the oxidation of amines using only a few general mechanisms. Examples of the application of these oxidation reactions are also provided.

Recent Advances in the Electrochemical Functionalization of Isocyanides

Isocyanides are well-known as efficient CO surrogates and C1 synthons in modern organic synthesis. Although tremendous efforts have been devoted to fully exploiting the reactivity of isocyanides, these transformations are primarily limited by their utilization of stoichiometric toxic chemical oxidants. With the recent resurgence of organic electrochemistry, which has considerably laid dormant over the past several decades, electrolysis has been identified as a green and powerful tool to enrich structural diversity by solely utilizing electric current as clean and inherently safe redox equivalents of stoichiometric chemical oxidants. In this regard, the unique reactivity of isocyanides has been studied in numerous electrochemical transformations. This review comprehensively highlights the most relevant progress in electrochemical strategies towards the functionalization of isocyanides up until June of 2022, with a focus on reaction outcomes and mechanisms.

Iridium Stabilizes Ceramic Titanium Oxynitride Support for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Decreasing iridium loading in the electrocatalyst presents a crucial challenge in the implementation of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers. In this respect, fine dispersion of Ir on electrically conductive ceramic supports is a promising strategy. However, the supporting material needs to meet the demanding requirements such as structural stability and electrical conductivity under harsh oxygen evolution reaction (OER) conditions. Herein, nanotubular titanium oxynitride (TiON) is studied as a support for iridium nanoparticles. Atomically resolved structural and compositional transformations of TiON during OER were followed using a task-specific advanced characterization platform. This combined the electrochemical treatment under floating electrode configuration and identical location transmission electron microscopy (IL-TEM) analysis of an in-house-prepared Ir-TiON TEM grid. Exhaustive characterization, supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, demonstrates and confirms that both the Ir nanoparticles and single atoms induce a stabilizing effect on the ceramic support via marked suppression of the oxidation tendency of TiON under OER conditions.

Effect of Persulfate Activation by Electrogenerated H2O2 and Anodic Oxidation on the Color Removal of Dye Solutions at Pt and BDD Anodes

In this study, tartrazine solutions were oxidized using innovative electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) that combined persulfate (PS) activation with electrogenerated H₂O₂, cathodic reduction and anodic oxidation at Pt and BDD anodes, and graphite cathode in an undivided stirred reactor. For the Pt anode, SO₄·^- was generated from a reduction reaction at the cathode and a reaction between the PS and electrogenerated H₂O₂. For the BDD anode, SO₄·^- was generated from a reduction reaction at the cathode, an oxidation reaction at the anode, and a reaction between PS and electrogenerated H₂O₂. Among these activation methods, the activation efficiency of PS by electrogenerated H₂O₂ is much better than other methods. The effects of PS concentration up to 36 mM, applied current density between 6 to 15 mA cm^-2, and temperatures between 25 to 45 °C were investigated. For the electro-Fenton process with Pt anode (Pt-H₂O₂/PS process), the best result for oxidizing 250 mg L^-1 tartrazine solution was obtained with 37.5 mM Na₂SO₄ + 9.0 mM Na₂S₂O₈, applied current density at 12 mA cm^-2 and 45 °C, acquiring total color removal after 30 min reaction. For the electro-Fenton process with BDD anode (BDD-H₂O₂/PS process), the best result for oxidizing 250 mg L^-1 tartrazine solution was obtained with 25 mM Na₂SO₄ + 18 mM Na₂S₂O₈, applied current density at 12 mA cm^-2 and 45 °C, yielding 100% color removal after 30 min reaction. The main oxidizing agents are SO₄·^- and OH· in the anodic oxidation process with PS and the electro-Fenton process with PS. It is concluded that the additions of PS tremendously improve the oxidation power of electro-Fenton processes with PS, especially the Pt-H₂O₂/PS process.

Enzyme-Inspired Microenvironment Engineering of a Single-Molecular Heterojunction for Promoting Concerted Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Challenges remain in the development of novel multifunctional electrocatalysts and their industrial operation on low-electricity pair-electrocatalysis platforms for the carbon cycle. Herein, an enzyme-inspired single-molecular heterojunction electrocatalyst ((NH_x )₁₆ -NiPc/CNTs) with specific atomic nickel centers and amino-rich local microenvironments for industrial-level electrochemical CO₂ reduction reaction (eCO₂ RR) and further energy-saving integrated CO₂ electrolysis is designed and developed. (NH_x )₁₆ -NiPc/CNTs exhibit unprecedented catalytic performance with industry-compatible current densities, ≈100% Faradaic efficiency and remarkable stability for CO₂ -to-CO conversion, outperforming most reported catalysts. In addition to the enhanced CO₂ capture by chemisorption, the sturdy deuterium kinetic isotope effect and proton inventory studies sufficiently reveal that such distinctive local microenvironments provide an effective proton ferry effect for improving local alkalinity and proton transfer and creating local interactions to stabilize the intermediate, ultimately enabling the high-efficiency operation of eCO₂ RR. Further, by using (NH_x )₁₆ -NiPc/CNTs as a bifunctional electrocatalyst in a flow cell, a low-electricity overall CO₂ electrolysis system coupling cathodic eCO₂ RR with anodic oxidation reaction is developed to achieve concurrent feed gas production and sulfur recovery, simultaneously decreasing the energy input. This work paves the new way in exploring molecular electrocatalysts and electrolysis systems with techno-economic feasibility.

Nanostructured Superhydrophobic Titanium-Based Materials: A Novel Preparation Pathway to Attain Superhydrophobicity on TC4 Alloy

This study develops the nanostructured superhydrophobic titanium-based materials using a combined preparation method of laser marking step and the subsequent anodizing step. The structural properties were determined using an X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), while the performance was explored by wear and corrosion tests. The laser marking caused a rough surface with paralleled grooves and protrusions, revealing surface superhydrophobicity after organic modification. The anodizing process further created a titanium oxide (TiO₂) nanotube film. Both phase constituent characterization and surface elemental analysis prove the uniform nanofilm. The inert nanosized oxide film offers improved stability and superhydrophobicity. Compared to those samples only with the laser marking process, the TiO₂ nanotube film enhances the corrosion resistance and mechanical stability of surface superhydrophobicity. The proposed preparation pathway serves as a novel surface engineering technique to attain a nanostructured superhydrophobic surface with other desirable performance on titanium alloys, contributing to their scale-up applications in diverse fields.

Nanofunctionalization of Additively Manufactured Titanium Substrates for Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Measurements

Powder bed fusion using a laser beam (PBF-LB) is a commonly used additive manufacturing (3D printing) process for the fabrication of various parts from pure metals and their alloys. This work shows for the first time the possibility of using PBF-LB technology for the production of 3D titanium substrates (Ti 3D) for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) measurements. Thanks to the specific development of the 3D titanium surface and its nanoscale modification by the formation of TiO₂ nanotubes with a diameter of ~80 nm by the anodic oxidation process, very efficient SERS substrates were obtained after deposition of silver nanoparticles (0.02 mg/cm², magnetron sputtering). The average SERS enhancement factor equal to 1.26 × 10⁶ was determined for pyridine (0.05 M + 0.1 M KCl), as a model adsorbate. The estimated enhancement factor is comparable with the data in the literature, and the substrate produced in this way is characterized by the high stability and repeatability of SERS measurements. The combination of the use of a printed metal substrate with nanofunctionalization opens a new path in the design of SERS substrates for applications in analytical chemistry. Methods such as SEM scanning microscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) were used to determine the morphology, structure and chemical composition of the fabricated materials.

Nitrogen-Doped Nanoporous Anodic Stainless Steel Foils towards Flexible Supercapacitors

In this work, we report the fabrication and enhanced supercapacitive performance of nitrogen-doped nanoporous stainless steel foils, which have been prepared by electrochemical anodization and subsequent thermal annealing in ammonia atmosphere. The nanoporous oxide layers are grown on type-304 stainless steel foil with optimal thickness ~11.9 μm. The N-doped sample exhibits high average areal capacitance of 321.3 mF·cm⁻² at a current density of 1.0 mA·cm⁻², 3.6 times of increment compared with untreated one. Structural and electrochemical characterizations indicate that the significant enhancement is correlated to the high charge transfer efficiency from nitriding nanosheet products Fe₃N. Our report here may provide new insight on the development of high-performance, low-cost and binder-free supercapacitor electrodes for flexible and portable electronic device applications with multiple anions.

Degradation of isoniazid by anodic oxidation and subcritical water oxidation methods: Application of Box-Behnken design

Pharmaceutical compounds released into the aquatic environment are known to cause toxic effects on the environment. Isoniazid is widely used in the treatment of tuberculosis and is, therefore, frequently encountered in environmental waters. In this study, the degradation of isoniazid was investigated by anodic oxidation and subcritical water oxidation method which are members of Advanced Oxidation Processes. The Box-Behnken Design was used to determine the effects of current, initial concentration, and electrolysis time on mineralization in the anodic oxidation process, which carried out a cell with a Pt cathode and boron-doped diamond anode. The highest mineralization value of 78.14% was achieved at optimal conditions of 300 mA, 3 h, and 100 mg/L initial concentration. The degradation of Isoniazid was also investigated under subcritical water conditions using an ecological oxidizing agent, H₂O₂. The maximum mineralization rate of 72.23% was obtained when 100 mM H₂O₂ was used for a 90 min treatment at 125 °C for 100 mg/L Isoniazid solution in the subcritical water oxidation process. The LC-MS results showed that the degradation products obtained by AO and SWO methods were different from each other. Finally, possible degradation mechanisms are proposed according to the degradation products obtained for both processes.

Comparative electrochemical oxidation of the secondary effluent of petrochemical wastewater with electro-Fenton and anodic oxidation with supporting electrolytes

Electro-Fenton (EF) oxidation has high oxidation abilities and is widely used in the treatment of biorefractory and chemically refractory organic wastewater. However, it generates a large amount of iron sludge, which limits large-scale application. In this work, the comparative study of EF oxidation and anodic oxidation (AO) of the secondary effluent of petrochemical wastewater using boron doped diamond anode is carried out. In EF oxidation, the effects of Fe²⁺ concentration, pH value, and current density are investigated. The optimal conditions consist of the following: Fe²⁺ concentration of 1.5 mmol·L^-1, pH of 4, and current density of 10 mA·cm^-2. In AO process, the effect of adding SO42-, Cl^-, NO3-, PO43-, and CO32- is investigated; the optimal conditions can be obtained by adding a Na₂SO₄ solution (0.075 mol·L^-1). When compared with AO, although EF oxidation has a higher treatment efficiency, its energy consumption is higher, and the generated effluent (with 155 g of iron sludge·m^-3) dramatically increases the post-treatment cost, thereby limiting its large-scale application. For AO with Na₂SO₄ solution (0.075 mol·L^-1) and a COD removal efficiency of 70%, the corresponding treatment time is 1.34 h and the energy consumption is 2.44 kWh·m^-3.

Biological Effects of the Novel Mulberry Surface Characterized by Micro/Nanopores and Plasma-Based Graphene Oxide Deposition on Titanium

Purpose

This paper presents a technique for developing a novel surface for dental implants using a combination of nitriding and anodic oxidation, followed by the deposition of graphene oxide using atmospheric plasma. The effects of various surface treatments on bacterial adhesion and osteoblast activation were also evaluated.

Methods

CP titanium (control) was processed into disk-shaped specimens. Nitriding was conducted using vacuum nitriding, followed by anodic oxidation, which was performed in an electrolyte using a DC power supply, to form the novel “mulberry surface.” Graphene oxide deposition was performed using atmospheric plasma with an inflow of carbon sources. After analyzing the sample surfaces, antibacterial activity was evaluated using Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria. The viability, adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation of osteoblasts were also assessed. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Tukey’s post-hoc test was used to calculate statistical differences.

Results

We observed that the mulberry surface was formed on samples treated with nitriding and anodic oxidation, and these samples exhibited more effective antibacterial activity than the control. We also found that the samples with additional graphene oxide deposition exhibited better biocompatibility, which was validated by osteoblast adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation.

Conclusion

The development of the mulberry surface along with graphene oxide deposition inhibits bacterial adhesion to the implant and enhances the adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation of osteoblasts. These results indicate that the mulberry surface and graphene oxide deposition together can inhibit peri-implantitis and promote osseointegration.

Production, Characterization and Application of Oxide Nanotubes on Ti-6Al-7Nb Alloy as a Potential Drug Carrier

This work concerns the development of a method of functionalization of the surface of the biomedical Ti–6Al–7Nb alloy by producing oxide nanotubes (ONTs) with drug-eluting properties. Shaping of the morphology, microstructure, and thickness of the oxide layer was carried out by anodization in an aqueous solution of 1 M ethylene glycol with the addition of 0.2 M NH₄F in the voltage range 5–100 V for 15–60 min at room temperature. The characterization of the physicochemical properties of the obtained ONTs was performed using SEM, XPS, and EDAX methods. ONTs have been shown to be composed mainly of TiO₂, Al₂O₃, and Nb₂O₅. Single-walled ONTs with the largest specific surface area of 600 cm² cm⁻² can be obtained by anodization at 50 V for 60 min. The mechanism of ONT formation on the Ti–6Al–7Nb alloy was studied in detail. Gentamicin sulfate loaded into ONTs was studied using FTIR, TG, DTA, and DTG methods. Drug release kinetics was determined by UV–Vis spectrophotometry. The obtained ONTs can be proposed for use in modern implantology as carriers for drugs delivered locally in inflammatory conditions.

The Longer Route can be Better: Electrosynthesis in Extended Path Flow Cells

This personal account provides an overview of work conducted in my research group, and through collaborations with other chemists and engineers, to develop flow electrolysis cells and apply these cells in organic electrosynthesis. First, a brief summary of my training and background in organic synthesis is provided, leading in to the start of flow electrosynthesis in my lab in collaboration with Derek Pletcher. Our work on the development of extended path electrolysis flow reactors is described from a synthetic organic chemist's perspective, including laboratory scale-up to give several moles of an anodic methoxylation product in one day. The importance of cell design is emphasised with regards to achieving good performance in laboratory electrosynthesis with productivities from hundreds of mg h^-1 to many g h^-1 , at high conversion in a selective fashion. A simple design of recycle flow cell that can be readily constructed in a small University workshop is also discussed, including simple modifications to improve cell performance. Some examples of flow electrosyntheses are provided, including Shono-type oxidation, anodic cleavage of protecting groups, Hofer-Moest reaction of cubane carboxylic acids, oxidative esterification and amidation of aldehydes, and reduction of aryl halides.

Electrochemical Generation of Hypervalent Bromine(III) Compounds

In sharp contrast to hypervalent iodine(III) compounds, the isoelectronic bromine(III) counterparts have been little studied to date. This knowledge gap is mainly attributed to the difficult-to-control reactivity of λ³ -bromanes as well as to their challenging preparation from the highly toxic and corrosive BrF₃ precursor. In this context, we present a straightforward and scalable approach to chelation-stabilized λ³ -bromanes by anodic oxidation of parent aryl bromides possessing two coordinating hexafluoro-2-hydroxypropanyl substituents. A series of para-substituted λ³ -bromanes with remarkably high redox potentials spanning a range from 1.86 V to 2.60 V vs. Ag/AgNO₃ was synthesized by the electrochemical method. We demonstrate that the intrinsic reactivity of the bench-stable bromine(III) species can be unlocked by addition of a Lewis or a Brønsted acid. The synthetic utility of the λ³ -bromane activation is exemplified by oxidative C-C, C-N, and C-O bond forming reactions.

A Simple 1D Convection-Diffusion Model of Oxalic Acid Oxidation Using Reactive Electrochemical Membrane

In recent years, electrochemical methods utilizing reactive electrochemical membranes (REM) have been recognized as the most promising technologies for the removal of organic pollutants from water. In this paper, we propose a 1D convection-diffusion-reaction model concerning the transport and oxidation of oxalic acid (OA) and oxygen evolution in the flow-through electrochemical oxidation system with REM. It allows the determination of unknown parameters of the system by treatment of experimental data and predicts the behavior of the electrolysis setup. There is a good agreement in calculated and experimental data at different transmembrane pressures and initial concentrations of OA. The model provides an understanding of the processes occurring in the system and gives the concentration, current density, potential, and overpotential distributions in REM. The dispersion coefficient was determined as a fitting parameter and it is in good agreement with literary data for similar REMs. It is shown that the oxygen evolution reaction plays an important role in the process even under the kinetic limit, and its contribution decreases with increasing total organic carbon flux through the REM.

Modeling the Formation of Gas Bubbles inside the Pores of Reactive Electrochemical Membranes in the Process of the Anodic Oxidation of Organic Compounds

The use of reactive electrochemical membranes (REM) in flow-through mode during the anodic oxidation of organic compounds makes it possible to overcome the limitations of plate anodes: in the case of REM, the area of the electrochemically active surface is several orders of magnitude larger, and the delivery of organic compounds to the reaction zone is controlled by convective flow rather than diffusion. The main problem with REM is the formation of fouling and gas bubbles in the pores, which leads to a decrease in the efficiency of the process because the hydraulic resistance increases and the electrochemically active surface is shielded. This work aims to study the processes underlying the reduction in the efficiency of anodic oxidation, and in particular the formation of gas bubbles and the recharge of the REM pore surface at a current density exceeding the limiting kinetic value. We propose a simple one-dimensional non-stationary model of the transport of diluted species during the anodic oxidation of paracetamol using REM to describe the above effects. The processing of the experimental data was carried out. It was found that the absolute value of the zeta potential of the pore surface decreases with time, which leads to a decrease in the permeate flux due to a reduction in the electroosmotic flow. It was shown that in the solution that does not contain organic components, gas bubbles form faster and occupy a larger pore fraction than in the case of the presence of paracetamol; with an increase in the paracetamol concentration, the gas fraction decreases. This behavior is due to a decrease in the generation of oxygen during the recombination reaction of the hydroxyl radicals, which are consumed in the oxidation reaction of the organic compounds. Because the presence of bubbles increases the hydraulic resistance, the residence time of paracetamol—and consequently its degradation degree—increases, but the productivity goes down. The model has predictive power and, after simple calibration, can be used to predict the performance of REM anodic oxidation systems.

Research on Surface Treatment and Interfacial Bonding Technology of Copper-Polymer Direct Molding Process

To realize the connection of copper and Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) by metal–polymer direct molding, this paper combined anodic oxidation and chemical corrosion to treat the surface of copper, and carried out the injection molding experiment. An orthogonal experimental arrangement was used to identify the optimal electrolyte and etching solution for preparing a microstructure on a copper surface. The bonding and fracture mechanisms of the copper–polymer assembly were investigated through injection molding experiment and SEM technology. The results revealed that the phosphoric acid concentration had the most significant effect on the microstructure quality and etching solution containing 20% phosphoric acid produced a uniform microstructure with 25.77% porosity and 5.52 MPa bonding strength. Meanwhile, SEM images of the interface from bonding to fracture in the copper–polymer assembly indicated a well-filled polymer in the microstructure with a mainly cohesive fracture mode.

Electrochemical Hydroboration of Alkynes

Herein we reported the electrochemical hydroboration of alkynes by using B₂Pin₂ as the boron source. This unprecedented reaction manifold was applied to a broad range of alkynes, giving the hydroboration products in good to excellent yields without the need of a metal catalyst or a hydride source. This transformation relied on the possible electrochemical oxidation of an in situ formed borate. This anodic oxidation performed in an undivided cell allowed the formation of a putative boryl radical, which reacted on the alkyne.

Synthesis of Morphinans through Anodic Aryl-Aryl Coupling

The morphinans are an important class of structurally fascinating and physiologically important natural products as exemplified by the famous opium alkaloids of the morphine family. Although this class of secondary metabolites from the juice of the opium poppy capsule was already used for medicinal purposes thousands of years ago, chemical modifications are still being applied to the core structure today in order to achieve the most specific effect on the various receptor subtypes possible with the fewest possible side effects. The unusual architecture of the morphinan core has also proven to be a highly challenging target for total synthesis. This review highlights electrosynthetic approaches towards natural and semisynthetic morphinan alkaloids. The historical progress in applying anodic aryl-aryl couplings to the construction of the morphinan framework is described in chronological order while particular benefits and challenges concerning the electrochemical transformations are grouped together, including the influence of substitution patterns, protecting groups, and reaction conditions.

Suitability of Different Titanium Dioxide Nanotube Morphologies for Photocatalytic Water Treatment

Photocatalysis has long been touted as one of the most promising technologies for environmental remediation. The ability of photocatalysts to degrade a host of different pollutants, especially recalcitrant molecules, is certainly appealing. Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) has been used extensively for this purpose. Anodic oxidation allows for the synthesis of a highly ordered nanotubular structure with a high degree of tunability. In this study, a series of TiO₂ arrays were synthesised using different electrolytes and different potentials. Mixed anatase-rutile photocatalysts with excellent wettability were achieved with all the experimental iterations. Under UVA light, all the materials showed significant photoactivity towards different organic pollutants. The nanotubes synthesised in the ethylene glycol-based electrolyte exhibited the best performance, with near complete degradation of all the pollutants. The antibacterial activity of this same material was similarly high, with extremely low bacterial survival rates. Increasing the voltage resulted in wider and longer nanotubes, characteristics which increase the level of photocatalytic activity. The ease of synthesis coupled with the excellent activity makes this a viable material that can be used in flat-plate reactors and that is suitable for photocatalytic water treatment.

Nanostructure of Porous Si and Anodic SiO2 Surface Passivation for Improved Efficiency Porous Si Solar Cells

The photovoltaic effect in the anodic formation of silicon dioxide (SiO₂) on porous silicon (PS) surfaces was investigated toward developing a potential passivation technique to achieve high efficiency nanostructured Si solar cells. The PS layers were prepared by electrochemical anodization in hydrofluoric acid (HF) containing electrolyte. An anodic SiO₂ layer was formed on the PS surface via a bottom-up anodization mechanism in HCl/H₂O solution at room temperature. The thickness of the oxide layer for surface passivation was precisely controlled by adjusting the anodizing current density and the passivation time, for optimal oxidation on the PS layer while maintaining its original nanostructure. HRTEM characterization of the microstructure of the PS layer confirms an atomic lattice matching at the PS/Si interface. The dependence of photovoltaic performance, series resistance, and shunt resistance on passivation time was examined. Due to sufficient passivation on the PS surface, a sample with anodization duration of 30 s achieved the best conversion efficiency of 10.7%. The external quantum efficiency (EQE) and internal quantum efficiency (IQE) indicate a significant decrease in reflectivity due to the PS anti-reflection property and indicate superior performance due to SiO₂ surface passivation. In conclusion, the surface of PS solar cells could be successfully passivated by electrochemical anodization.

Effect of the Morphology of the High-Surface-Area Support on the Performance of the Oxygen-Evolution Reaction for Iridium Nanoparticles

The development of affordable, low-iridium-loading, scalable, active, and stable catalysts for the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) is a requirement for the commercialization of proton-exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWEs). However, the synthesis of high-performance OER catalysts with minimal use of the rare and expensive element Ir is very challenging and requires the identification of electrically conductive and stable high-surface-area support materials. We developed a synthesis procedure for the production of large quantities of a nanocomposite powder containing titanium oxynitride (TiON x ) and Ir. The catalysts were synthesized with an anodic oxidation process followed by detachment, milling, thermal treatment, and the deposition of Ir nanoparticles. The anodization time was varied to grow three different types of nanotubular structures exhibiting different lengths and wall thicknesses and thus a variety of properties. A comparison of milled samples with different degrees of nanotubular clustering and morphology retention, but with identical chemical compositions and Ir nanoparticle size distributions and dispersions, revealed that the nanotubular support morphology is the determining factor governing the catalyst's OER activity and stability. Our study is supported by various state-of-the-art materials' characterization techniques, like X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopies, X-ray powder diffraction and absorption spectroscopy, and electrochemical cyclic voltammetry. Anodic oxidation proved to be a very suitable way to produce high-surface-area powder-type catalysts as the produced material greatly outperformed the IrO2 benchmarks as well as the Ir-supported samples on morphologically different TiON x from previous studies. The highest activity was achieved for the sample prepared with 3 h of anodization, which had the most appropriate morphology for the effective removal of oxygen bubbles.

The Optical and Electrical Performance of CuO Synthesized by Anodic Oxidation Based on Copper Foam

Metal oxide semiconductor materials have a wide range of applications in the field of solar energy conversion. In this paper, CuO was prepared directly on copper foam substrate by anodic oxidation. The effects of current density and anodizing temperature on sample preparation and performance were studied. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD) had been used to determine the morphology and phase structure of the sample, and its optical and electrical properties were discussed through UV-vis spectrophotometer and electrochemical tests. In addition, the influences of experimental conditions such as current density and reaction temperature on the morphology and properties of CuO were systematically discussed. The FESEM images showed that as the anodic oxidation temperature increase, the morphology of the prepared sample changed from nanowires to leaf-like CuO nanosheets. According to the results of XRD, the structure of prepared CuO was monoclinic, and the intensity of diffraction peaks gradually increased as anodizing temperature increased. We found that the optimum current density and anodizing temperature were 20 mA cm⁻² and 60 °C, respectively. The results of electrochemical indicated that the CuO electrode based on copper foam (CuO/Cu foam) prepared at the optimum exhibited the highest specific capacitance (0.1039 F cm⁻²) when the scan rate was 2 mV s⁻¹.

Voltage-Controlled Anodic Oxidation of Porous Fluorescent SiC for Effective Surface Passivation

This study investigated the fabrication of porous fluorescent SiC using a constant voltage-controlled anodic oxidation process. The application of a high, constant voltage resulted in a spatial distinction between the porous structures formed inside the fluorescent SiC substrates, due to the different etching rates at the terrace and the large step bunches. Large, dendritic porous structures were formed as the etching process continued and the porous layer thickened. Under the conditions of low hydrofluoric acid (HF) concentration, the uniformity of the dendritic porous structures through the entire porous layer was considerably improved compared with the conditions of high HF concentration. The resulting large uniform structure offered a sizable surface area, and promoted the penetration of atomic layer-deposited (ALD) Al₂O₃ films (ALD–Al₂O₃). The emission intensity in the porous fluorescent SiC was confirmed via photoluminescence (PL) measurements to be significantly improved by a factor of 128 after ALD passivation. With surface passivation, there was a clear blueshift in the emission wavelength, owing to the effective suppression of the non-radiative recombination rate in the porous structures. Furthermore, the spatial uniformity of emitted light was examined via PL mapping using three different excitation lasers, which resulted in the observation of uniform and distinctive emissions in the fluorescent SiC bulk and porous areas.

Facilitating Ir-Catalyzed C-H Alkynylation with Electrochemistry: Anodic Oxidation-Induced Reductive Elimination

An electrochemical approach in promoting directed C-H alkynylation with terminal alkyne via iridium catalysis is reported. This work employed anodic oxidation of Ir(III) intermediate (characterized by X-ray crystallography) to promote reductive elimination, giving the desired coupling products in good yields (up to 95%) without the addition of any other external oxidants. This transformation is suitable for various directing groups with H2 as the only by-product, which warrants a high atom economy and practical oxidative C-C bond formation under mild conditions.

Coupling of Anodic Oxidation and Soil Remediation Processes: A Review

In recent years, due to industrial modernization and agricultural mechanization, several environmental consequences have been observed, which make sustainable development difficult. Soil, as an important component of ecosystem and a key resource for the survival of human and animals, has been under constant contamination from different human activities. Contaminated soils and sites require remediation not only because of the hazardous threat it possess to the environment but also due to the shortage of fresh land for both agriculture and urbanization. Combined or coupled remediation technologies are one of the efficient processes for the treatment of contaminated soils. In these technologies, two or more soil remediation techniques are applied simultaneously or sequentially, in which one technique complements the other, making the treatment very efficient. Coupling anodic oxidation (AO) and soil remediation for the treatment of soil contaminated with organics has been studied via two configurations: (i) soil remediation, ex situ AO, where AO is used as a post-treatment stage for the treatment of effluents from soil remediation process and (ii) soil remediation, in situ AO, where both processes are applied simultaneously. The former is the most widely investigated configuration of the combined processes, while the latter is less common due to the greater diffusion dependency of AO as an electrode process. In this review, the concept of soil washing (SW)/soil flushing (SF) and electrokinetic as soil remediation techniques are briefly explained followed by a discussion of different configurations of combined AO and soil remediation.

A 2D Convection-Diffusion Model of Anodic Oxidation of Organic Compounds Mediated by Hydroxyl Radicals Using Porous Reactive Electrochemical Membrane

In recent years, electrochemical methods utilizing reactive electrochemical membranes (REM) have been considered as a promising technology for efficient degradation and mineralization of organic compounds in natural, industrial and municipal wastewaters. In this paper, we propose a two-dimensional (2D) convection-diffusion-reaction model concerning the transport and reaction of organic species with hydroxyl radicals generated at a TiO_x REM operated in flow-through mode. It allows the determination of unknown parameters of the system by treatment of experimental data and predicts the behavior of the electrolysis setup. There is a good agreement in the calculated and experimental degradation rate of a model pollutant at different permeate fluxes and current densities. The model also provides an understanding of the current density distribution over an electrically heterogeneous surface and its effect on the distribution profile of hydroxyl radicals and diluted species. It was shown that the percentage of the removal of paracetamol increases with decreasing the pore radius and/or increasing the porosity. The effect becomes more pronounced as the current density increases. The model highlights how convection, diffusion and reaction limitations have to be taken into consideration for understanding the effectiveness of the process.

Charged Tags for the Identification of Oxidative Drug Metabolites Based on Electrochemistry and Mass Spectrometry

Most of the active pharmaceutical ingredients like Metoprolol are oxidatively metabolized by liver enzymes, such as Cytochrome P450 monooxygenases into oxygenates and therefore hydrophilic products. It is of utmost importance to identify the metabolites and to gain knowledge on their toxic impacts. By using electrochemistry, it is possible to mimic enzymatic transformations and to identify metabolic hot spots. By introducing charged-tags into the intermediate, it is possible to detect and isolate metabolic products. The identification and synthesis of initially oxidized metabolites are important to understand possible toxic activities. The gained knowledge about the metabolism will simplify interpretation and predictions of metabolitic pathways. The oxidized products were analyzed with high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry using electrospray ionization (HPLC-ESI-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. For proof-of-principle, we present a synthesis of one pyridinated main oxidation product of Metoprolol.

In Vitro Studies on Nanoporous, Nanotubular and Nanosponge-Like Titania Coatings, with the Use of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells

In vitro biological research on a group of amorphous titania coatings of different nanoarchitectures (nanoporous, nanotubular, and nanosponge-like) produced on the surface of Ti6Al4V alloy samples have been carried out, aimed at assessing their ability to interact with adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) and affect their activity. The attention has been drawn to the influence of surface coating architecture and its physicochemical properties on the ADSCs proliferation. Moreover, in vitro co-cultures: (1) fibroblasts cell line L929/ADSCs and (2) osteoblasts cell line MG-63/ADSCs on nanoporous, nanotubular and nanosponge-like TiO₂ coatings have been studied. This allowed for evaluating the impact of the surface properties, especially roughness and wettability, on the creation of the beneficial microenvironment for co-cultures and/or enhancing differentiation potential of stem cells. Obtained results showed that the nanoporous surface is favorable for ADSCs, has great biointegrative properties, and supports the growth of co-cultures with MG-63 osteoblasts and L929 fibroblasts. Additionally, the number of osteoblasts seeded and cultured with ADSCs on TNT5 surface raised after 72-h culture almost twice when compared with the unmodified scaffold and by 30% when compared with MG-63 cells growing alone. The alkaline phosphatase activity of MG-63 osteoblasts co-cultured with ADSCs increased, that indirectly confirmed our assumptions that TNT-modified scaffolds create the osteogenic niche and enhance osteogenic potential of ADSCs.

Preparation of Superhydrophobic Surface on Titanium Alloy via Micro-milling, Anodic Oxidation and Fluorination

The superhydrophobic surface has a great advantage of self-cleaning, inhibiting bacterial adhesion, and enhancing anticoagulant properties in the field of biomedical materials. In this paper, a superhydrophobic surface was successfully prepared on titanium alloy via high-speed micro-milling, anodic oxidation and fluoroalkylsilane modification. The surface morphology was investigated by scanning electron microscope and a laser scanning microscope. The surface wettability was investigated through the sessile-drop method. Firstly, regular microgrooves were constructed by micro-milling. Then, nanotube arrays were fabricated by anodic oxidation. Afterwards, fluoroalkylsilane was used to self-assemble a monolayer on the surface with a composite micro/nanostructure. Compared to polished titanium samples, the modified samples exhibited superhydrophobic properties with the water contact angle (CA) of 153.7° and the contact angle hysteresis of 2.1°. The proposed method will provide a new idea for the construction of superhydrophobic titanium surgical instruments and implants in the future.

Sulfate-Functionalized Nickel Hydroxide Nanobelts for Sustained Oxygen Evolution

Nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)₂)-based electrocatalysts are promising for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their low cost, but their activity and durability still need substantial improvement to meet practical application. Here, we report a sulfate-functionalized Ni(OH)₂ nanobelt (S-Ni(OH)₂) electrocatalyst, which exhibited self-enhanced OER activity due to its self-renewed surface during anodic oxidation. The S-Ni(OH)₂ was in situ grown on the nickel foam (NF) surface in potassium peroxydisulfate solution through one-step hydrothermal treatment. This material outperformed all the existing electrocatalysts in the intensity and duration of the OER activity enhancement. An overpotential drop of 70 mV is shown by the S-Ni(OH)₂/NF electrode during 110 h reaction at a current density of 100 mA cm^-2, and the overpotential remains as low as 358 mV at a current density of 200 mA cm^-2. Such activity enhancement during OER is mainly ascribed to the formation of a highly active NiOOH/Ni(SO₄)_0.3(OH)_1.4 composite on the S-Ni(OH)₂ surface as a result of gradual sulfate release. Given the facile and environmentally benign fabrication process (without external addition of a Ni source and surfactant) and good electrochemical properties (high activity and long lifetime), the S-Ni(OH)₂ holds great potential for practical OER application. The surface self-renewal strategy developed here might also be expanded to other electrocatalysts and electrochemical processes.

Oxo-Thiolation of Cationically Polymerizable Alkenes Using Flow Microreactors

The present study describes the cationic oxo-thiolation of polymerizable alkenes by using highly reactive cationic species generated by anodic oxidation. These highly reactive cations were able to activate alkenes before their polymerization. Fast mixing in flow microreactors effectively controlled chemoselectivity, enabling higher reaction temperatures.

Biological Effects of Anodic Oxidation on Titanium Miniscrews: An In Vitro Study on Human Cells

This controlled in vitro study compared the effects of varying the thickness of a TiO₂ layer on cellular activity using commercially available miniscrew samples with identical surface features to derive information with direct clinical impact. Titanium grade V plates with four different thicknesses of TiO₂ layer/color were used: absent/gray (Control group), 40–50 nm/pink (Pink group), 130 nm/gold (Gold group) and 140 nm/rosé (Rosé group). In vitro experiments used Saos-2 cells and included cell growth analysis, phospho-Histone H3 and procollagen I staining, cell viability analysis, and a cell migration assay at 12, 24, 40 and to 48 h. Few differences were seen among the groups, with no clear behavior of cellular activity according to the TiO₂ thickness. The Control group showed a greater cell count. Phospho-Histone H3 staining was similar among the groups and procollagen I staining was greater in the Rosé group. Cell viability analysis showed a significant difference for live cell counts (greater in the Rosé group) and no difference for the dead cell counts. The cell migration assay showed a delay for the Rosé group up to 40 h, where full repopulation of cell-free areas was obtained at 48 h. The results suggest that the TiO₂ layers of the commercial miniscrews have minimal biological effects, including cytotoxicity, with possibly negligible or minimal clinical implications.

Performance of Electrochemical Processes in the Treatment of Reverse Osmosis Concentrates of Sanitary Landfill Leachate

Electrochemical technologies have been broadly applied in wastewaters treatment, but few studies have focused on comparing the performance of the different electrochemical processes, especially when used to treat highly-polluted streams. The electrochemical treatment of a reverse osmosis concentrate of sanitary landfill leachate was performed by means of electrocoagulation (EC), anodic oxidation (AO) and electro-Fenton (EF) processes, and the use of different electrode materials and experimental conditions was assessed. All the studied processes and experimental conditions were effective in organic load removal. The results obtained showed that EC, with stainless steel electrodes, is the cheapest process, although it presents the disadvantage of sludge formation with high iron content. At high applied current intensity, AO presents the best treatment time/energy consumption ratio, especially if the samples’ initial pH is corrected to 3. However, pH correction from natural to 3 deeply decreases nitrogen-containing compounds’ removal. For longer treatment time, the EF process with a carbon-felt cathode and a BDD anode, performed at natural iron content and low applied current intensity, is the most favorable solution.

Tuning the Size and Shape of NanoMOFs via Templated Electrodeposition and Subsequent Electrochemical Oxidation

The control over the size and shape of nanoMOFs is essential for their exploitation in integrated devices such as sensors, membranes for gas separation, photoelectrodes, etc. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of nanowires and three-dimensionally interconnected nanowire networks of Cu-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by a combination of ion-track technology and electrochemical methods. In particular, Cu nanowires and nanowire networks were electrodeposited inside polymeric etched ion-track membranes and subsequently converted by electrochemical oxidation into different Cu-based MOFs such as the well-known Cu₃(BTC)₂ (also known as HKUST-1) and the lesser-known MOF Cu(INA)₂. The MOFs are formed inside the template, therefore adopting the shape of the host nanochannels. The synthesized MOF nanowires exhibit tunable diameters between 80 and 260 nm. Characterization by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy indicates that the employed electrochemical conversion includes the formation of Cu₂O as an intermediate, as well as the initial formation of an amorphous MOF phase, which crystallizes upon longer reaction times.

Electrochemical Umpolung of Bromide: Transition-Metal-Free Bromination of Indole C⁻H Bond

A facile and sustainable electrochemical umpolung of bromide ion protocol was developed under mild reaction conditions. Transition metal catalysts and exogenous chemical oxidants were obviated for the bromination of C⁻H bond. Notably, graphite rod, which is commercially available at supermarkets and is inexpensive, was employed as the electrode material. This operationally easy and environmentally friendly approach accomplished the synthesis of 3-bromoindole in excellent yield and regioselectivity.

Surface Modification and Microstructuring of 4H-SiC(0001) by Anodic Oxidation with Sodium Chloride Aqueous Solution

Anodic oxidation is a promising surface modification technique for the manufacture of SiC wafers owing to its high oxidation rate. It is also possible to fabricate porous SiC by anodic oxidation and etching owing to the material properties of SiC. In this study, the anodic oxidation of a 4H-SiC(0001) surface was investigated by performing repeated anodic oxidation and hydrofluoric acid etching on a 4H-SiC(0001) surface, during which the formation of porous SiC was observed and studied. Anodic oxidation is very effective for removing the surface damage formed by mechanical polishing, and the surface after removing the surface damage can be oxidized uniformly and has a higher oxidation rate than a surface newly finished by chemical mechanical polishing (CMP). We proposed a model based on the electrochemical impedance method to explain the difference in the oxidation between an as-CMP-finished surface and an oxidized/etched surface. Porous SiC was obtained in this study, which was due to the anisotropy of the SiC crystal. The structure of the porous SiC was significantly dependent on the etch pits generated at the beginning of anodic oxidation and can be controlled via anodic oxidation parameters. Anodic oxidation and hydrofluoric acid etching cannot remove porous SiC owing to the anisotropic oxidation of the SiC surface and the difficulty of anodizing SiC fibers. This study shows that anodic oxidation is a promising technique for the modification of SiC surfaces and the fabrication of porous SiC.

Novel Titania Nanocoatings Produced by Anodic Oxidation with the Use of Cyclically Changing Potential: Their Photocatalytic Activity and Biocompatibility

The anodic oxidation of Ti6Al4V substrate surfaces with the use of cyclically changing potential enabled the production of novel titania nanocoatings. Morphologically different coatings were prepared in the ethylene glycol-based electrolyte with diluted HF and various amounts of water. The structure of the produced surface materials was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. Their morphology was visualized by scanning electron microscopy. The photocatalytic efficiency of produced materials was studied by the observation of methylene blue degradation under UV irradiation. Their biointegration properties were established on the basis of immunological assays, which checked murine fibroblasts adhesion and proliferation on novel coatings. The obtained results pointed out to both high biocompatibility, as well as the photoactivity of one of the obtained nanocoatings, allowing trusting in the applicative nature of this material.

Achieving Ultrahigh Breakdown Strength and Energy Storage Performance through Periodic Interface Modification in SrTiO3 Thin Film

A periodic layer structure consisting of sol-gel-derived SrTiO₃ and anodized Al₂O₃ has been designed and fabricated by interface engineering. Utilizing the anodized Al₂O₃ to be the blocking layer, not only the local high electric field around the hole and crack defects could be significantly reduced but also, and equally important, the blocking layer undertaking higher electric field could effectively decrease the breakdown probability of a SrTiO₃ layer based on the finite element analysis. As the sample has been modified, the barrier height of the charge carrier was increased through fitting the conductance activation energy ( H_c). In addition, the space charge-limited conductance mechanism was almost eliminated according to the fitted results in the ln E-ln J diagram, indicating that most of the charge carrier released from traps were blocked or isolated by the Al₂O₃ layer. As a result of the periodic interface modification, the leakage current was decreased 2 orders of magnitude and the breakdown strength was enhanced from 144.13 to 754.23 MV m^-1. More importantly, the ultimate energy density is up to 39.49 J cm^-3, which is 1505% greater than the sample without interface modification.
