Effect of a Hybrid Pumice-Portland Cement Extract on Corrosion Activity of Stainless Steel SS304 and Carbon Mild Steel A36

The change in the corrosion activities of SS304 and the carbon steel A36 were studied during their exposure for 30 days to hybrid pumice-Portland cement extract (CE), to simulate the concrete-pore environment. The ionic composition and the initial pH (12.99) of the CE were influenced by the reduction of Portland cement (PC) content, volcanic pumice oxides and alkaline activators. Because of the air CO2 dissolution, the pH decreased and maintained a constant value ≈ 9.10 (established dynamic ionic equilibrium). The CE promoted the passivation of both steels and their free corrosion potential (OCP) reached positive values. On the surfaces, Fe and Cr oxides were formed, according to the nature of the steel. Over the time of exposure, the presence of chloride ions in the pumice caused a localized pitting attack, and for carbon steel, this fact may indicate an intermediate risk of corrosion. The chloride effect was retarded by the accumulation of SO42- ions at the steel surfaces. Based on electrochemical impedance (EIS), the polarization resistance (Rp) and the thickness of the passive layers were calculated. Their values were compared with those previously reported for the steels exposed to CEs of Portland and supersulfated cements, and the hybrid cement was considered as a PC "green" alternative.

Mechanical Properties of a Sustainable Low-Carbon Geopolymer Concrete Using a Pumice-Derived Sodium Silicate Solution

A geopolymer is an inorganic amorphous cementitious material, emerging as an alternative sustainable binder for greener concrete production over Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). Geopolymer concrete production promotes waste reuse since the applicable precursor materials include agricultural and industrial waste that requires disposal, helping to reduce waste in landfills and ensuring sustainable environmental protection. This study investigates the development of an environmentally friendly sodium silicate alternative (SSA) derived from pumice powder (PP) in place of a commercial Na2SiO3 solution at a 10 M concentration. Six concrete batches were produced at alkaline/precursor (A/P) ratios of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5. The geopolymer mix AF4, with an A/P ratio of 0.4, became the optimum geopolymer concrete design; however, it recorded lower compressive, tensile splitting, and flexural strengths, respectively, against the control OPC concrete. The geopolymer formulations, however, obtained 28-day-hardened concrete densities comparable to the control concrete. The 28-day compressive strength of the OPC concrete was 29.4 MPa, higher than the 18.8 MPa recorded for AF4. However, the 56-day strength of AF4 improved to 22.4 MPa, an around 19% increase compared to the 30.8 MPa achieved by the control mix on day 56, having experienced only a 5% strength increase. The low mechanical performances of the geopolymer formulation could be attributed to extra water added to the original geopolymer design to improve the workability of the geopolymer mix. Therefore, the SSA alkaline solution using PP showed some potential for developing geopolymer concrete for low-strength construction applications.

Comparative Performance Study of Acidic Pumice and Basic Pumice Inclusions for Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene-Based Composite Filaments

This study aims to evaluate the effective use of porous pumice powder as an additive in acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS)-based composite materials. The influence of pumice addition on mechanical, thermomechanical, thermal, and physical properties of ABS filaments was reported. Two types of pumice, namely acidic pumice (AP) and basic pumice (BP), were melt compounded with ABS at loading levels of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% by weight using the melt extrusion preparation method. Composites were shaped into dog bone test specimens by the injection molding process. The physical properties of pumice powders were investigated by particle size analysis and X-ray spectroscopy techniques. Mechanical, thermomechanical, thermal, melt flow, and morphological behaviors of ABS/AP and ABS/BP composite filaments were proposed. According to test results, pumice addition led to an increase in the mechanical response of ABS up to a filling ratio of 10%. Further inclusion of pumice caused sharp reduction due to the possible agglomeration of pumice particles. Composites filled with AP yielded remarkably higher mechanical performance in terms of tensile, impact, and hardness strength compared with BP-loaded composites. According to thermal analyses, ABS exhibited higher thermal stability after incorporation of AP and BP. Pumice addition also resulted in raising the glass transition temperature of ABS. Melt flow index (MFI) findings revealed that addition of two types of pumice led to an opposite trend in the melt flow behavior of ABS filaments. Homogeneous dispersion of pumice particles into the ABS matrix when adding low amounts, as well as reduction in dispersion homogeneity with high amounts, of AP and BP was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs.

Physico-Mechanical Properties and Hydration Processes of Cement Pastes Modified with Pumice, Trass and Waste Chalcedonite Powder

In this article, the physico-mechanical properties and hydration processes of cement pastes containing three additives are introduced. Cement was replaced with pumice, trass, waste chalcedonite powder at 30% by mass and a combination of pumice or trass and waste chalcedonite powder in the amounts of 15% each. The main aim of this research was to assess the properties of two- or three-component binders to save cement in these binders. Rheological properties such as consistency, yield stress, viscosity and thixotropy were determined, in addition to porosity, 7-day and 28-day flexural and compressive strength and bulk density. Additionally, the heat evolution and degree of hydration of the tested pastes were compared. The use of all additives resulted in a reduction in the consistency of the tested pastes. The highest compressive strength measured after 28 days was observed for the cement paste with a 30% content of waste chalcedonite powder, which is related to it having the best pozzolanic activity of the materials used. The results of this research have confirmed that pumice, trass and waste chalcedonite powder can be used as components of blended Portland cements.

Investigation of the removal kinetics, thermodynamics and adsorption mechanism of anionic textile dye, Remazol Red RB, with powder pumice, a sustainable adsorbent from waste water

Excessive growth and abnormal use of dyes and water in the textile industry cause serious environmental problems, especially with excessive pollution of water bodies. Adsorption is an attractive, feasible, low-cost, highly efficient and sustainable technique in terms of green chemistry for the removal of pollutants from water. This study aims to investigate the removal kinetics, thermodynamics and adsorption mechanism of Remazol Red RB, which was chosen as a representative anionic reactive dye, from synthetic wastewater using powdered pumice, taking into account various experimental parameters such as initial dye concentration, adsorption time, temperature and pH. Moreover, to support the proposed adsorption mechanism, before and after adsorption of the samples, the Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR) spectra, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) diffractograms and High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images were also taken and used. The results show that powder pumice can be an efficient adsorbent for anionic dye removal with a relatively high adsorption capacity of 38.90 mg/g, and it is very effective in 30-60 min in mild conditions. The experimental data showed a high agreement with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich adsorption isotherm equation. In addition, thermodynamically, the process exhibited exothermic nature and standard isosteric enthalpy and entropy changes of -4.93 kJ/mol and 16.11 J/mol. K were calculated. It was determined that the adsorption mechanism was predominantly based on T-shaped pi-pi interactions and had physical characteristics.

Thermoluminescence in pumice stone collected from the Mediterranean coast

Pumice is a low-density, light-coloured volcanic rock (igneous rock) formed when the magma from a volcanic eruption is suddenly cooled. It has a porous structure and can be different colours and have different densities. Pumice stone, unlike other rock, does not sink in water because it has a low density. In the present study, the thermoluminescent (TL) dosimetric characteristics, such as the dose-response, TL signal fading as a function of storage time, heating rate, and reusability of pumice collected on the Mediterranean coast were investigated. From this study, it was concluded that the pumice stone showed TL properties with a TL glow curve including an obviously wide peak at ∼200°C. A wide linear dose-response region up to 144 Gy, low fading of the TL signal when it was kept in a dark room for a long time, and poor reusability properties were observed for dosimetry use.

Improvement of Fire Resistance and Mechanical Properties of Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) Composite Prepared from Combination of Active Nano Filler of Modified Pumice and Commercial Active Fillers

Glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) composites have great potential to replace metal components in vehicles by maintaining their mechanical properties and improving fire resistance. Ease of form, anti-corrosion, lightweight, fast production cycle, durability and high strength-to-weight ratio are the advantages of GFRP compared to conventional materials. The transition to the use of plastic materials can be performed by increasing their mechanical, thermal and fire resistance properties. This research aims to improve the fire resistance of GFRP composite and maintain its strength by a combination of pumice-based active nano filler and commercial active filler. The nano active filler of pumice particle (nAFPP) was obtained by the sol-gel method. Aluminum trihydroxide (ATH), sodium silicate (SS) and boric acid (BA) were commercial active fillers that were used in this study. The GFRP composite was prepared by a combination of woven roving (WR) and chopped strand mat (CSM) glass fibers with an unsaturated polyester matrix. The composite specimens were produced using a press mold method for controlling the thickness of specimens. Composites were tested with a burning test apparatus, flexural bending machine and Izod impact tester. Composites were also analyzed by SEM, TGA, DSC, FT-IR spectroscopy and macro photographs. The addition of nAFPP and reducing the amount of ATH increased ignition time significantly and decreased the burning rate of specimens. The higher content of nAFPP significantly increased the flexural and impact strength. TGA analysis shows that higher ATH content had a good contribution to reducing specimen weight loss. It is also strengthened by the lower exothermic of the specimen with higher ATH content. The use of SS and BA inhibited combustion by forming charcoal or protective film; however, excessive use of them produced porosity and lowered mechanical properties.

Corrosion Activity of Carbon Steel B450C and Stainless Steel SS430 Exposed to Extract Solution of a Supersulfated Cement

Carbon steel B450C and low-chromium stainless steel SS430 were exposed for 30 days to supersulfated "SS1" cement extract solution, considered as a "green" alternative for partial replacement of the Portland cement clinker. The initial pH of 12.38 dropped since the first day to 7.84, accompanied by a displacement to more negative values of the free corrosion potential (OCP) of the carbon steel up to ≈-480.74 mV, giving the formation of γ-FeOOH, α-FeOOH and Fe₂O₃, as suggested by XRD and XPS analysis. In the meantime, the OCP of the SS430 tended towards more positive values (+182.50 mV), although at lower pH, and XPS analysis revealed the presence of Cr(OH)₃ and FeO as corrosion products, as well the crystals of CaCO₃, NaCl and KCl. On both surfaces, a localized corrosion attack was observed in the vicinity of local cathodes (Cu, Mn-carbides, Cr-nitrides, among others), influenced by the presence of Cl^- ions in the "SS1" extract solution, originating from the pumice. Two equivalent circuits were proposed for the quantitative analysis of EIS Nyquist and Bode diagrams, whose data were correlated with the OCP values and pH change in time of the "SS1" extract solution. The thickness of the corrosion layer formed on the SS430 surface was ≈0.8 nm, while that on the B450C layer was ≈0.3 nm.

Variation of Durability and Strength Parameters of Pumice Based Mixtures

The numerical modelling of chloride penetration into concrete is very sensitive to the correct description of the input data. In the recent era, high-performance concrete (HPC), which combines Portland cement and other supplementary cementitious materials, has been gaining attraction due to their desirable material properties and durability. The presented results show the application of the modified approach for the evaluation of the suitability of the time-dependent model for the variation of the diffusion coefficient. The 26 various binary and ternary-based concrete mixtures blended with volcanic pumice pozzolan (VPP) as a major supplementary cementitious material (SCM) are compared with the reference Ordinary Portland Cement mixture. Other SCMs namely fly ash, slag, silica fume, and metakaolin were also utilized in ternary-based concrete mixtures. In-depth statistical analysis was carried out to show the variability and effects of the amount of the volcanic pumice as an SCM on the diffusion coefficient. The mean value and regression via linear approximation of the time-dependent coefficient of variation of the diffusion coefficients were used as well as the Root of Mean Squared Error approach. The presented results are suitable as the component of the input parameters for the durability-related probabilistic assessment of the reinforced concrete structures exposed to chlorides. In addition, the time-dependent ultimate limit state-related data was presented.

Adsorptive Removal of Phosphate from Aqueous Solutions Using Low-Cost Volcanic Rocks: Kinetics and Equilibrium Approaches

The contamination of surface and groundwater with phosphate originating from industrial and household wastewater remains a serious environmental issue in low-income countries. Herein, phosphate removal from aqueous solutions was studied using low-cost volcanic rocks such as pumice (VPum) and scoria (VSco), obtained from the Ethiopian Great Rift Valley. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted using phosphate solutions with concentrations of 0.5 to 25 mg·L⁻¹ to examine the adsorption kinetic as well as equilibrium conditions. The experimental adsorption data were tested by employing various equilibrium adsorption models, and the Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherms best depicted the observations. The maximum phosphate adsorption capacities of VPum and VSco were calculated and found to be 294 mg·kg⁻¹ and 169 mg·kg⁻¹, respectively. A pseudo-second-order kinetic model best described the experimental data with a coefficient of correlation of R² > 0.99 for both VPum and VSco; however, VPum showed a slightly better selectivity for phosphate removal than VSco. The presence of competitive anions markedly reduced the removal efficiency of phosphate from the aqueous solution. The adsorptive removal of phosphate was affected by competitive anions in the order: HCO₃⁻ >F⁻ > SO₄⁻² > NO₃⁻ > Cl⁻ for VPum and HCO₃⁻ > F⁻ > Cl⁻ > SO₄⁻² > NO₃⁻ for VSco. The results indicate that the readily available volcanic rocks have a good adsorptive capacity for phosphate and shall be considered in future studies as test materials for phosphate removal from water in technical-scale experiments.

Effect of Mineral Aggregates and Chemical Admixtures as Internal Curing Agents on the Mechanical Properties and Durability of High-Performance Concrete

In the present work, the effect of mineral aggregates (pumice stone and expanded clay aggregates) and chemical admixtures (superplasticizers and shrinkage reducing additives) as an alternative internal curing technique was investigated, to improve the properties of high-performance concrete. In the fresh and hardened state, concretes with partial replacements of Portland cement (CPC30R and OPC40C) by pulverized fly ash in combination with the addition of mineral aggregates and chemical admixtures were studied. The physical, mechanical, and durability properties in terms of slump, density, porosity, compressive strength, and permeability to chloride ions were respectively determined. The microstructural analysis was carried out by scanning electronic microscopy. The results highlight the effect of the addition of expanded clay aggregate on the internal curing of the concrete, which allowed developing the maximum compressive strength at 28 days (61 MPa). Meanwhile, the replacement of fine aggregate by 20% of pumice stone allowed developing the maximum compressive strength (52 MPa) in an OPC-based concrete at 180 days. The effectiveness of internal curing to develop higher strength is attributed to control in the porosity and a high water release at a later age. Finally, the lowest permeability value at 90 days (945 C) was found by the substitutions of fine aggregate by 20% of pumice stone saturated with shrinkage reducing admixture into pores and OPC40C by 15% of pulverized fly ash. It might be due to impeded diffusion of chloride ions into cement paste in the vicinity of pulverized fly ash, where the pozzolanic reaction has occurred. The proposed internal curing technology can be considered a real alternative to achieve the expected performance of a high-performance concrete since a concrete with a compressive strength range from 45 to 67 MPa, density range from 2130 to 2310 kg/m³, and exceptional durability (< 2000 C) was effectively developed.

A Novel "Microbial Bait" Technique for Capturing Fe(III)-Reducing Bacteria

Microbial reduction of Fe(III) is a key geochemical process in anoxic environments, controlling the degradation of organics and the mobility of metals and radionuclides. To further understand these processes, it is vital to develop a reliable means of capturing Fe(III)-reducing microorganisms from the field for analysis and lab-based investigations. In this study, a novel method of capturing Fe(III)-reducing bacteria using Fe(III)-coated pumice "microbe-baits" was demonstrated. The methodology involved the coating of pumice (approximately diameter 4 to 6 mm) with a bioavailable Fe(III) mineral (akaganeite), and was verified by deployment into a freshwater spring for 2 months. On retrieval, the coated pumice baits were incubated in a series of lab-based microcosms, amended with and without electron donors (lactate and acetate), and incubated at 20°C for 8 weeks. 16S rRNA gene sequencing using the Illumina MiSeq platform showed that the Fe(III)-coated pumice baits, when incubated in the presence of lactate and acetate, enriched for Deltaproteobacteria (relative abundance of 52% of the sequences detected corresponded to Geobacter species and 24% to Desulfovibrio species). In the absence of added electron donors, Betaproteobacteria were the most abundant class detected, most heavily represented by a close relative to Rhodoferax ferrireducens (15% of species detected), that most likely used organic matter sequestered from the spring waters to support Fe(III) reduction. In addition, TEM-EDS analysis of the Fe(III)-coated pumice slurries amended with electron donors revealed that a biogenic Fe(II) mineral, magnetite, was formed at the end of the incubation period. These results demonstrate that Fe(III)-coated pumice "microbe baits" can potentially help target metal-reducing bacteria for culture-dependent studies, to further our understanding of the nano-scale microbe-mineral interactions in aquifers.

The Usability of Pumice Powder as a Binding Additive in the Aspect of Selected Mechanical Parameters for Concrete Road Pavement

In this study, the usability of pumice powder and lime in concrete production as a binding additive for rigid superstructure concrete road pavement was investigated. Following the determination of the optimum binder ratio, these new binder ratios were used in crushed limestone concrete production. The concrete thus formed was named concrete containing cement, pumice powder and lime (PPCC). The normally produced concrete, without pumice powder and lime binder was selected as reference concrete (RC). Regarding the total binder amount of the most appropriate binder ratio 50% was found to be cement, 30% pumice powder and 20% lime in the result of the study. In consequence of the study, the 20 ± 2 °C and 7-28 days compressive strengths of the reference concrete were found to be 33.8 MPa and 38.2 MPa and its bending strengths were 4.2 MPa and 4.7 MPa. The 20 ± 2 °C and 7-28 days compressive strengths of PPCC were found to be 25.1 MPa and 28.3 MPa and its bending strengths were 3.2 MPa and 3.5 MPa. The results of the study showed the usability of PPCC in concrete pavement.

Long-term operational studies of lab-scale pumice-woodchip packed stormwater biofilters

The performance of three pumice-woodchip packed stormwater biofilter (PWSWBF) systems with three packing volume ratios of pumice to woodchip (1:2, 1:1 and 2:1) were compared. The results show that the PWSWBF system packed with a lower percentage of woodchip attained a higher removal efficiency of TCOD, TN, NH₄-N and TP, whereas all three systems completely removed nitrate. The highest removal efficiencies for TCOD, TN, NH₄-N, NO₃-N and TP were 95%, 70%, 86%, 100% and 100%, respectively. In the biofilter with a lower percentage of woodchip, the pollutants that get removed through aerobic biological processes were removed more significantly, which is attributed to less oxygen depletion via woodchip decomposition, which is common under wet conditions. Nitrate was significantly removed via denitrification in all three systems, indicating that the woodchip that occupied one-third of the main media was sufficient for denitrification, and also that the oxygen condition inside the column was proper for denitrification to proceed. A smaller amount of woodchip as the packing material also mitigated the adverse effect of the release of organics from the media during the initial period. In addition, the system showed very good buffering capacity, in that the outflow pH was constant within the optimal range for microorganism growth.

Removal of Arsenic (V) from Aqueous Solutions Using Chitosan-Red Scoria and Chitosan-Pumice Blends

In different regions across the globe, elevated arsenic contents in the groundwater constitute a major health problem. In this work, a biopolymer chitosan has been blended with volcanic rocks (red scoria and pumice) for arsenic (V) removal. The effect of three blending ratios of chitosan and volcanic rocks (1:2, 1:5 and 1:10) on arsenic removal has been studied. The optimal blending ratio was 1:5 (chitosan: volcanic rocks) with maximum adsorption capacity of 0.72 mg/g and 0.71 mg/g for chitosan: red scoria (Ch–Rs) and chitosan: pumice (Ch–Pu), respectively. The experimental adsorption data fitted well a Langmuir isotherm (R² > 0.99) and followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The high stability of the materials and their high arsenic (V) removal efficiency (~93%) in a wide pH range (4 to 10) are useful for real field applications. Moreover, the blends could be regenerated using 0.05 M NaOH and used for several cycles without losing their original arsenic removal efficiency. The results of the study demonstrate that chitosan-volcanic rock blends should be further explored as a potential sustainable solution for removal of arsenic (V) from water.

Evaluation of the surface roughness of three heat-cured acrylic denture base resins with different conventional lathe polishing techniques: A comparative study

PURPOSE

Surface roughness promotes adhesion and colonization of denture plaque. Therefore, it is important to know the effects of polishing and finishing on the surface roughness of various acrylic resin materials.

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate and compare the effects of different conventional lathe polishing techniques on heat cured acrylic resins in producing surface roughness.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Three different commercially available heat-cured acrylic resin materials namely DPI, Meliodent and Trevalon Hi were selected. 30 Specimens of each acrylic material (30 x 3 = 90, 10 x 60 x 2mm) were prepared and divided into 5 groups, each group consisted of 6 Nos. of specimens per material(6x3=18) and were grouped as Group A(unfinished), Group B (finished), Group C (Polishing Paste), Group D (Polishing Cake) and Group E (Pumice and Gold rouge). The resulted surface roughness (μm) was measured using Perthometer and observed under Scanning Electron Microscope. The values obtained were subjected statistical analyses.

RESULTS

Among the materials tested, better results were obtained with Trevalon Hi followed by Meliodent and DPI. Among the polishing methods used, superior results were obtained with universal polishing paste followed by polishing cake; Pumice and Gold rouge. Although Pumice and Gold rouge values produced greater roughness value, they were well within the threshold value of 0.2 mm.
