Abstract
INTRODUCTION Establishing reference ranges for central airway parameters and exploring their influencing factors in Han Chinese non-smoking adults. METHODS This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted on Han Chinese non-smoking adults who underwent chest CT scans at the Tongzhou Campus of Dongzhimen Hospital Affiliated with the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine between September 2022 and November 2022. The SYNAPSE 3D image analysis software was utilized, enabling the extraction of critical parameters such as central airway length, airway wall thickness (AWT), airway lumen area (ALA), and subcarinal angle (SCA). Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis and multiple linear regression analysis methods were employed to evaluate the relationship between central airway parameters and age, sex, weight, and height. RESULTS The study encompassed 888 Han Chinese non-smoking adults, comprising 456 females and 432 males. Significant sex differences were noted in central airway length, AWT, and ALA, with measurements in males exceeding those in females (p < 0.01) with no significant difference in SCA. Correlation analyses unveiled relationships between central airway parameters and age, sex, weight, and height. During multiple linear regression analyses, no conclusive evidence emerged to demonstrate the independent or combined explanatory or predictive capacity of the aforementioned variables for central airway length and SCA. Although sex has a significant impact on AWT and ALA, its capability in explanation or prediction remains limited. The conclusions drawn from the primary analysis receive reinforcement from the outcomes of sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSION Establishing the distribution range of central airway parameters in non-smoking Han Chinese adults. It observed significant sex differences in these parameters, except for the SCA. However, the study found that the predictive or explanatory power of age, sex, weight, and height for central airway parameters was either limited or non-significant.

Abstract
Introduction This study aimed to examine whether the Canadian Laboratory Initiative on Pediatric Reference Intervals (CALIPER) reference intervals for 19 commonly used biochemical assays (potassium, sodium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, inorganic phosphorous, glucose, urea, creatinine, direct and total bilirubin, C-reactive protein (CRP), total protein, albumin, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and lactate dehydrogenase (LD)) could be applied to the newborn population of one Croatian clinical hospital. Materials and methods Reference interval verification was performed according to the CLSI EP28-A3c guidelines. Samples of healthy newborns were selected using the direct a posteriori sampling method and analyzed on the Beckman Coulter AU680 biochemical analyzer. If verification wasn't satisfactory, further procedure included de novo determination of own reference intervals by analyzing 120 samples of healthy newborns. Results After the first set of measurements, 14/19 tested reference intervals were adopted for use: calcium, inorganic phosphorous, glucose, urea, creatinine, total bilirubin, CRP, total protein, albumin, AST, ALT, GGT, ALP and LD. A second set of samples was tested for 5 analytes: potassium, sodium, chloride, magnesium and direct bilirubin. The verification results of the additional samples for sodium and chloride were satisfactory, while the results for potassium, magnesium and direct bilirubin remained unsatisfactory and new reference intervals were determined. Conclusions The CALIPER reference intervals can be implemented into routine laboratory and clinical practice for the tested newborn population for most of the analyzed assays, while own reference intervals for potassium, magnesium and direct bilirubin have been determined.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Measurements of gastric emptying and accommodation for alternative test-meal protocol during gastric emptying scintigraphy (GES), such as high-calorie nutrient drinks, are not fully established. We aimed to compare the effects of standardized egg-white meal (EWM) versus high-calorie nutrient drink (Vital®; Abbott Laboratories) on global GES parameters and intragastric meal distribution at immediate scan (IMD0h). METHODS Of 84 screened participants, 60 asymptomatic healthy Asian population (38 females; 24.0 ± 1.5 years; 23.8 ± 2.6 kg/m2) were recruited in this 2 × 2 (AB/BA) crossover trial. Participants were randomized to a 4-h GES with 99mTc-radiolabeled EWM (~255.8 kcal), followed by a 200 mL Vital® (300 kcal), or vice versa, separated by a 2-week washout period. Global meal retention (GMR), power-exponential model emptying parameters (half-emptying [T1/2], lag phases [Tlag2%, Tlag5%, Tlag10%]), and IMD0h were determined and compared. RESULTS GMRs for both test meals were within the international standard references for solid GES. Compared to EWM, Vital® exhibited significantly lower GMRs (faster emptying) from 0.5 to 3 h (all P < 0.001) but comparable at 4 h (P = 0.153). Similar observations were found for the model-based T1/2 and the different Tlag thresholds (all P < 0.001). Furthermore, IMD0h was found to be lower with Vital®, indicating lower gastric accommodation (faster antral filling) immediately post-ingestion (P < 0.001). Both test meals showed significant moderate-to-strong positive associations at the late-phase GE (GMR 2-4 h, T1/2) (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Overall, Vital® is an acceptable alternative test meal to the EWM for GES; however, exercise caution when interpreting early-phase GE. The normative values for global GES parameters and IMD0h are also established.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION/AIMS Nerve conduction studies (NCSs) are widely used to support the clinical diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders. The aims of this study were to obtain reference values for peroneal, tibial, and sural NCSs and to examine the associations with demographic and anthropometric factors. METHODS In 5099 participants (aged 40-79 years) without type 2 diabetes of The Maastricht Study, NCSs of peroneal, tibial, and sural nerves were performed. Values for compound muscle action potential (CMAP) and sensory nerve action potential amplitude, nerve conduction velocity (NCV), and distal latency were acquired. The association of age, sex, body mass index (BMI), and height with NCS values was determined using uni- and multivariate linear regression analyses. RESULTS Detailed reference values are reported per decade for men and women. Significantly lower NCVs and longer distal latencies were observed in all nerves in older and taller individuals as well as in men. In these groups, amplitudes of the tibial and sural nerves were significantly lower, whereas a lower peroneal nerve CMAP was only significantly associated with age. BMI showed a multidirectional association. After correction for anthropometric factors in the multivariate analysis, the association between sex and NCS values was less straightforward. DISCUSSION These values from a population-based dataset could be used as a reference for generating normative values. Our findings show the association of NCS values with anthropometric factors. In clinical practice, these factors can be considered when interpreting NCS values.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Severe deficiency of growth hormone (GHD) of the newborn is a rare but potentially life-threatening disease. GH measured during the first week of life, using dried blood spots (DBS), may offer several advantages. Aim of the study was to estimate the reference values for GH in newborns by a new analytical method using DBS. METHODS Using a new developed analytical method, GH was estimated from DBS of 1,036 healthy newborns attending the Neonatology Unit of Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico of Milan in the period July-October 2021. Reference values for GH deficiency were estimated by the Harrell-Davis bootstrap method, with 90 %CI calculated by the bias-corrected and accelerated bootstrap method. RESULTS All GH measurements required 33 analytical sessions (8 months) with a CV% for calibration curve slopes equal to 6.9 %. Intermediate precision evaluated by measurement of low (3 μg/L) and high (10 μg/L) quality controls was, respectively, 14 and 6.5 %. GH reference values, estimated at percentiles 1.0st, 2.5th and 5.0th, and their 90 %CI, were, respectively, 4.5 μg/L (90 %CI 3.8-5.1), 5.9 μg/L (90 %CI 5.4-6.4) and 7.0 μg/L (90 %CI 6.7-7.3). GH levels were not associated with sex, standard deviation scores, birth weight, gestational age, type of delivery or mother's variables (age, smoking habit, gestational diabetes). CONCLUSIONS Validation data suggest that this method can be used to measured GH in newborns using DBS. The reference values estimated in this study are in accordance with previous published works using ELISA and may help confirming the clinical suspicion of neonatal GHD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (cardiac MR) reference ranges in Chinese children are lacking. PURPOSE To establish age- and sex-specific reference ranges for cardiac MR parameters in a cohort of healthy Chinese children. STUDY TYPE Retrospective. SUBJECTS One hundred ninety-six healthy children (mean age 9.5 ± 3.6 years, 111 boys). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE 1.5 T; balanced steady-state free precession. ASSESSMENT Biventricular volume and ejection fractions (EF), left atrial (LA) volume, right atrial (RA) area, left ventricular (LV) mass and thickness, aortic root (AR), and main pulmonary artery (MPA) dimensions were measured. Parameters were compared between age groups and sex. The relationships between parameters and age, body mass index (BMI) and body surface area (BSA) were investigated. STATISTICAL TESTS Independent-samples t tests; Pearson's correlation. A P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS Generally, boys exhibited greater absolute measurements of LV volume (end-diastolic: 94.4 ± 29.5 vs. 81.3 ± 31.0 mL), LA volume (end-diastolic: 42.6 ± 13.4 vs. 38.0 ± 13.3 mL), RA area (end-diastolic: 11.6 ± 2.5 vs. 10.8 ± 2.6 cm2), LV thickness (base: 4.4 ± 1.1 vs. 3.8 ± 0.9 mm), AR dimensions (annuls: 16.3 ± 2.7 vs. 15.0 ± 2.8 mm), and MPA dimensions (14.3 ± 2.3 vs. 13.1 ± 2.4 mm) than girls did. However, these differences were not observed when the measurements were normalized to BSA (LV volume: 75.3 ± 11.7 vs. 71.9 ± 12.3 mL/m2, P = 0.052; LA volume: 34.8 ± 8.9 vs. 34.5 ± 7.6 mL/m2, P = 0.783; RA area: 9.7 ± 2.3 vs. 10.2 ± 2.3 cm2/m2, P = 0.107; LV thickness: 3.6 ± 0.7 vs. 3.6 ± 0.9 mm/m2, P = 0.990; AR: 13.6 ± 2.7 vs. 14.3 ± 3.4 mm/m2, P = 0.108; MPA: 11.9 ± 2.3 vs. 12.4 ± 2.4 mm/m2, P = 0.118). Boys had greater RV volume (end-diastolic: 98.7 ± 33.5 vs. 82.7 ± 33.1 mL) and LV mass (52.6 ± 20.2 vs. 41.4 ± 16.0 g) compared to girls, irrespective of whether the values were indexed or not for BSA. Additionally, there were significant associations between age, BMI, and BSA with biventricular volume, LA volume, RA area, LV mass and thickness, AR and MPA dimensions in both boys and girls. DATA CONCLUSION This study suggests reference ranges at 1.5 T for Chinese children. EVIDENCE LEVEL 3 TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 2.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Trace elements (TEs) are ubiquitous. TE concentrations vary among individuals and countries, depending on factors such as living area, workplaces and diet. Deficit or excessive TEs concentrations have consequences on the proper functioning of human organism so their biomonitoring is important. The aim of this project was to provide reference values for TEs concentrations in the Swiss population. METHODS The 1,078 participants to the SKiPOGH cohort included in this study were aged 18-90 years. Their 24-h urine and/or plasma samples were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine 24 TEs concentrations: Ag, Al, As, Be, Bi, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, I, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Pd, Pt, Sb, Se, Sn, Tl, V and Zn. Statistical tests were performed to evaluate the influence of covariates (sex, age, BMI, smoking) on these results. Reference intervals for the Swiss adult population were also defined. RESULTS TEs concentrations were obtained for respectively 994 and 903 persons in plasma and urine matrices. It was possible to define percentiles of interest (P50 and P95) for almost all the TEs. Differences in TEs distribution between men and women were noticed in both matrices; age was also a cofactor. CONCLUSIONS This first Swiss biomonitoring of a large TEs-panel offers reference values in plasma and in urine for the Swiss population. The results obtained in this study were generally in line with clinical recommendations and comparable to levels reported in other population-based surveys.

Abstract
This systematic review aimed to provide an overview of test protocols used to measure peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) in adults with Down syndrome (DS) and to determine how generalisable the outcomes are for the entire population of adults with DS by describing the sample characteristics of these studies and their impact on VO2peak. A literature search (PROSPERO CRD42022309560) was performed (18 July 2023) using the following databases: PubMed, CINAHL, APA PsycINFO, Web of Science, Embase and SPORTDiscus. For articles to be included, they had to be peer-reviewed pubications, reporting VO2peak or VO2max for individuals with DS separately, with a sample of n ≥ 5 and a mean age ≥18 years. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses were excluded but their reference lists were searched for additional papers to include. Studies were evaluated for risk of bias following the guidelines of Kmet et al. The results were summarised with frequency statistics. Forty-three studies were included in this systematic review. Sample sizes of included adults with DS ranged from n = 4-226, with a total of n = 1498 adults with DS being included. Most studies (29/43) used the same standardised maximal exercise treadmill protocol to measure VO2peak in adults with DS, and 33 out of 43 studies used at least one objective criterion to determine a valid maximal effort. Participants were predominantly male, under 40 years old, and overweight or obese. Additionally, the diversity of study samples was lacking or not reported. The most widely used, standardised, maximal exercise test treadmill protocol is recommended for future use in research and practice, including objective criteria to determine valid maximal effort. The current study samples are not representative of the population of adults with DS in terms of sex, age and diverse backgrounds and therefore likely overestimate VO2peak of this population.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There is important clinical information from placental weight and its ratio to the fetal weight. The aim with this study was to establish reference values for the placental weight and the placental:fetal weight ratio for gestational weeks 13-43 in a Swedish population. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cases were retrospectively collected from the database used at the Pathology Department at Karolinska University Hospital and information about the placental weight, fetal weight, and gestational age was retrieved. Conditions, which could affect the placental- or fetal weight were excluded. Thereafter percentile curves were calculated for the placental weight and the placental:fetal weight ratio for gestational weeks. RESULTS A total of 730 cases were included and percentile curves for the placental weight for gestational week 13-43 and placental:fetal weight ratio for gestational week 18-43 are presented. CONCLUSIONS Reference values for post fixation placental weight and its ratio to fetal weight for a Swedish population are presented. The reference values are lower than the current reference values used in our institution, and this will be of importance when interpreting findings after placental examination.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Computed tomography (CT) offers pulmonary volumetric quantification but is not commonly used in healthy individuals due to radiation concerns. Chronic airflow limitation (CAL) is one of the diagnostic criteria for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), where early diagnosis is important. Our aim was to present reference values for chest CT volumetric and radiodensity measurements and explore their potential in detecting early signs of CAL. METHODS From the population-based Swedish CArdioPulmonarybioImage Study (SCAPIS), 294 participants aged 50-64, were categorized into non-CAL (n = 258) and CAL (n = 36) groups based on spirometry. From inspiratory and expiratory CT images we compared lung volumes, mean lung density (MLD), percentage of low attenuation volume (LAV%) and LAV cluster volume between groups, and against reference values from static pulmonary function test (PFT). RESULTS The CAL group exhibited larger lung volumes, higher LAV%, increased LAV cluster volume and lower MLD compared to the non-CAL group. Lung volumes significantly deviated from PFT values. Expiratory measurements yielded more reliable results for identifying CAL compared to inspiratory. Using a cut-off value of 0.6 for expiratory LAV%, we achieved sensitivity, specificity and positive/negative predictive values of 72%, 85% and 40%/96%, respectively. CONCLUSION We present volumetric reference values from inspiratory and expiratory chest CT images for a middle-aged healthy cohort. These results are not directly comparable to those from PFTs. Measures of MLD and LAV can be valuable in the evaluation of suspected CAL. Further validation and refinement are necessary to demonstrate its potential as a decision support tool for early detection of COPD.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to define pediatric reference intervals for serum cobalamin and folate utilizing data generated from a population not exposed to food fortified with folic acid. Folate and cobalamin results analyzed by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (Roche Cobas) were obtained from 2375 children (2 months to 17.99 years of age). The serum samples were collected between 2011 and 2015 as part of the LIFE (Leipzig Research Centre for Civilization Diseases) Child cohort study in Germany, where folic acid fortification of food is not mandated. These results were used to generate age- and gender-specific reference intervals presented as non-parametric 2.5 and 97.5 percentiles. Because of a subsequent restandardisation of the Roche folate assay in 2016, folate values were recalculated accordingly for adaptation to results obtained using the present calibration. In both genders, folate concentrations decreased continuously with age, whereas cobalamin concentrations peaked at five years of age and then declined. Teenage females had higher concentrations of cobalamin in the age group 12-17.99 years.

Abstract
We have recently determined dimethylguanidino valeric acid (DMGV) to be a novel biomarker of liver injury in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and an independent predictor of incident diabetes over a decade in advance. DMGV consists of two stereo-isomers, asymmetric dimethylguanidino valeric acid (ADGV) and symmetric dimethylguanidino valeric acid (SDGV). Here we report, for the first time, the upper limits of normal of both isomers in humans at the accepted 5.56% liver fat threshold for NAFLD, determined using in vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopy. We performed independent and blinded comparative analyses of ADGV and SDGV levels using two different liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) methods in (A) our laboratory, and (B) the New South Wales Chemical Pathology state laboratory, using unique columns, LC-MS/MS equipment, extraction protocols and normalisation approaches. Despite these differences, each laboratory reported consistent absolute concentrations across a range of liver fat percentages. We next determined the diagnostic performance of SDGV compared to ADGV in a cohort of 268 individuals with liver fat measurements. In derivation-validation analyses we determined rule-in/rule-out thresholds and the concentration of SDGV that provides optimal performance across sensitivity and specificity for the identification of NAFLD. In conclusion, we have herein determined for the first time the true human plasma reference range of both isoforms of an emerging novel biomarker of NAFLD, at the accepted upper normal threshold of liver fat. We have also identified that SDGV is the isoform with the best diagnostic performance and determined the optimal cut-point for its detection of NAFLD.

Abstract
Plasma calprotectin is a promising new biomarker of inflammatory activity and has been found to correlate well with clinical and endoscopic activity in children and adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease. A pediatric reference interval for plasma calprotectin has not been established for the Phadia 250 EliA™ Calprotectin fluoroenzyme immunoassay. In studies regarding pre-analytical properties, excellent precision and stability was found. However, sensitivity to hemolysis was demonstrated. We identified pediatric blood samples from apparently healthy children who were referred by their general practitioner for blood sampling including measurement of hemoglobin (Hb) and C-reactive protein (CRP). We excluded samples from children who had undergone additional blood sampling within 2 months before or after the index sample, if Hb was outside of local reference ranges or CRP levels were above the lower limit of the measuring interval (LLM), and any samples with a hemolysis above 0.02 mmol/L. Using this algorithm, we identified 141 blood samples. No outliers were identified. We established the following reference intervals according to CLSI C28-A3 using non-parametric statistics: 1-17 years: 16-246 µg/L. Our results may prove useful for further utilization of plasma calprotectin as a marker of inflammation in children and adolescents with inflammatory disorders.

Abstract
Assessment of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) after pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been limited in children and adolescents due to a lack of disease-specific instruments. To fill this gap, the Quality of Life after Traumatic Brain Injury for Children and Adolescents (QOLIBRI-KID/ADO) Questionnaire was developed for the German-speaking population. Reference values from a comparable general population are essential for comprehending the impact of TBI on health and well-being. This study examines the validity of the German QOLIBRI-KID/ADO in a general pediatric population in Germany and provides reference values for use in clinical practice. Overall, 1997 children and adolescents aged 8-17 years from the general population and 300 from the TBI population participated in this study. The questionnaire was tested for reliability and validity. A measurement invariance (MI) approach was used to assess the comparability of the HRQoL construct between both samples. Reference values were determined by percentile-based stratification according to factors that significantly influenced HRQoL in regression analyses. The QOLIBRI-KID/ADO demonstrated strong psychometric properties. The HRQoL construct was measured largely equivalently in both samples, and reference values could be provided. The QOLIBRI-KID/ADO was considered reliable and valid for assessing HRQoL in a general German-speaking pediatric population, allowing for clinically meaningful comparisons between general and TBI populations.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the reference values for serum uric acid (SUA) levels and their association with overweight/obese in children. We conducted a retrospective analysis of 8522 participants, including 6227 normal weight children, aged 2 to 18 years in China. Among normal children, SUA levels increased with age, showing significant sex differences in children over 10 years. Age-specific and sex-specific 95% reference intervals for SUA levels were established. Furthermore, we observed that the percentage of overweight/obesity significantly increased as SUA quartiles rose. Elevated SUA levels were associated with a high odds ratio (OR) for overweight/obesity (OR = 4.45, 95% confidence interval = 3.33, 5.93). We propose that the 97.5th percentile is a suitable value for defining elevated SUA levels, and there is a positive correlation between SUA levels and the presence of overweight or obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To synthesize and present reference values for double-leg and single-leg jump tests in healthy athletes who play pivoting sports, and athletes with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) who play pivoting sports. DESIGN: scoping review. LITERATURE SEARCH: We searched PubMed, the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, Embase and Web of Science until April 7, 2023. STUDY SELECTION CRITERIA: We included reference values in two different categories: (1) double-leg and/or single-leg jump test outcomes in pivoting-sport athletes with ACLR at a specific time point during rehabilitation, and (2) double-leg and/or single-leg jump test outcomes in healthy pivoting-sport athletes. DATA SYNTHESIS: We performed data synthesis for reference values from double-leg jump tests (squat jump and countermovement jump) and single-leg jump tests (vertical hop, single hop for distance, triple hop for distance, crossover hop for distance, medial triple hop for distance, lateral triple hop for distance, 6-meter timed hop, side hop, drop jump, and 10 second repeated hop) that were performed according to a standardized test description. We summarized the data for type of sport, sex, sport participation level and age group. RESULTS: Of the 27 included studies, 9 reported reference values from healthy soccer players, 6 from healthy basketball players, and 11 from other healthy pivoting-sport athletes. LSI dominant/non-dominant (LSI-D/ND) ranged between 97% to 106% for healthy soccer players, and between 99% to 120% for healthy basketball players. Four studies reported reference values from pivoting-sport athletes with ACLR from 7 to 10 months post-surgery. CONCLUSION: This scoping review summarizes double-leg and single-leg jump test reference values for athletes who play common pivoting sports, including soccer and basketball.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) has established itself as the gold standard for serial assessment of systemic right ventricular (RV) performance but due to the lack of standardized RV reference values for HLHS patients, the interpretation of RV volumetric data in HLHS remains difficult. Therefore, this study aimed to close this gap by providing CMR reference values for the systemic RV in HLHS patients. METHODS CMR scans of 160 children, adolescents and young adults (age range 2.2 to 25.2 years, 106 males) with HLHS were retrospectively evaluated. All patients were studied following total cavopulmonary connection. Short axis stacks were used to measure RV end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes (RVEDV, RVESV), stroke volume (RVSV), ejection fraction (RVEF) and end-diastolic myocardial mass (RVEDMM). Univariable and multiple linear regression analyses was performed to assess associations between RV parameters and demographic and anthropometric characteristics. Following the results of the regression analysis, reference graphs and tables were created with the LMS-method. RESULTS Multiple linear regression analysis showed strong associations between body height and RVEDV, RVESV as well as RVSV. Age was highly associated with RVEDMM. Therefore, percentile curves and tables were created with respect to body height (RVEDV, RVESV, RVSV) and age (RVEDMM). The influence of demographic and anthropometric parameters on RVEF was mild, thus no percentile curves and tables for RVEF are provided. CONCLUSION We were able to define CMR reference values for RV volumetric variables for HLHS patients. These data might be useful for the assessment and interpretation of CMR scans in these patients and for research in this field.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Serum calcium is frequently measured during the neonatal period, and is known to be influenced by the vitamin D status. We hypothesized that the 25OHD concentration may influence the lower limit of the serum calcium normal range in neonates. METHODS We included in our prospective cohort study 1002 mother-newborn pair recruited from April 2012 to July 2014, in two centers located in the neighborhoods of Paris, France, whose serum calcium was measured at 3 days of life. We established, after exclusion of outliers, a 95% confidence interval (CI) for serum calcium 1) in our whole population of 1002 neonates, 2) in neonates with a cord blood 25OHD concentration ≥ 30 nmol/L, and 3) in those with a 25OHD ≥ 50 nmol/L. RESULTS The mean serum total calcium was 2.46 ± 0.13 nmol/L [95% CI: 2.19-2.72 mmol/L], 2.47 ± 0.25 mmol/L [95% CI: 2.22-2.72 mmol/L], and 2.50 ± 0.25 mmol/L [95% CI: 2.25-2.75 mmol/L] in the whole group, in the 514 neonates with 25OHD ≥ 30 nmol/L, and in the 202 neonates with 25OHD ≥ 50 nmol/L respectively. The lower limit of the 95% range was significantly higher in neonates with 25 OHD ≥ 30 nmol/L (p<0.05) and ≥ 50 nmol/L (p<0.001) than in the entire cohort. CONCLUSION We show that the lower limit of the normal serum calcium range is higher in groups with a higher 25OHD than in unselected subjects. We propose that the reference range for serum calcium in neonates is 2.25 to 2.75 mmol/L.

Abstract
PURPOSE Reference values of occlusal characteristics are needed to interpret the data obtained using the T-Scan System. This study aimed to establish reference values for and to assess the reliability of, occlusal force distribution in the maximal intercuspal position and the occlusion time in young adults with healthy dentition. MATERIALS AND METHODS In total 178 adults with natural dentition participated in this retrospective cross-sectional study, of whom 76 performed a retest session. Several occlusal recordings were obtained from each participant using the T-Scan system while asking them to bite two or three consecutive times (multi-bite) or only once (single-bite) at the maximal intercuspal position. The lateral and anteroposterior occlusal force distribution were determined as percentages in the right and posterior teeth . Occlusion time was measured in seconds. After the occlusal force distribution and occlusion time percentiles were calculated, reliability was assessed by the intraclass correlation coefficient. RESULTS The 5th-95th percentiles for occlusal force distribution were 34%-67% on the right teeth and 55%-94% on the posterior teeth. The 90th percentile for multi-bite occlusion time was 0.17 s and for single-bite occlusion time was 0.27 s. The intraclass correlation coefficients for lateral occlusal force distribution, anteroposterior occlusal force distribution, multi-bite occlusion time, and single-bite occlusion time were 0.70, 0.68, 0.58, and 0.67, respectively. CONCLUSIONS This study generated reference values for key occlusal characteristics (occlusal force distribution and occlusion time) when using the T-Scan system. These values showed moderate reliability.

Abstract
Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) screening is tedious and still performed by analysis of total glycosaminoglycans (GAG) using 1,9-dimethylmethylene blue (DMB) photometric assay, although false positive and negative tests have been reported. Analysis of differentiated GAGs have been pursued classically by gel electrophoresis or more recently by quantitative LC-MS assays. Secondary elevations of GAGs have been reported in urinary tract infections (UTI). In this manuscript, we describe the diagnostic accuracy of urinary GAG measurements by LC-MS for MPS typing in 68 untreated MPS and mucolipidosis (ML) patients, 183 controls and 153 UTI samples. We report age-dependent reference values and cut-offs for chondroitin sulfate (CS), dermatan sulfate (DS), heparan sulfate (HS) and keratan sulfate (KS) and specific GAG ratios. The use of HS/DS ratio in combination to GAG concentrations normalized to creatinine improves the diagnostic accuracy in MPS type I, II, VI and VII. In total 15 samples classified to the wrong MPS type could be correctly assigned using HS/DS ratio. Increased KS/HS ratio in addition to increased KS improves discrimination of MPS type IV by excluding false positives. Some samples of UTI patients showed elevation of specific GAGs, mainly CS, KS and KS/HS ratio and could be misclassified as MPS type IV. Finally, DMB photometric assay performed in MPS and ML samples reveal four false negative tests (sensitivity of 94%). In conclusion, specific GAG ratios in complement to quantitative GAG values obtained by LC-MS enhance discrimination of MPS types. Exclusion of patients with UTI improve diagnostic accuracy in MPS IV but not in other types.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Loss of muscle mass is a known feature of sarcopenia and predicts poor clinical outcomes. Although muscle metrics can be derived from routine computed tomography (CT) images, sex-specific reference values at multiple vertebral levels over a wide age range are lacking. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to provide reference values for skeletal muscle mass and attenuation on thoracic and abdominal CT scans in the community-based Framingham Heart Study cohort to aid in the identification of sarcopenia. MATERIALS AND METHODS This secondary analysis of a prospective trial describes muscle metrics by age and sex for participants from the Framingham Heart Study without prior history of cancer who underwent at least 1 CT scan between 2002 and 2011. Using 2 previously validated machine learning algorithms followed by human quality assurance, skeletal muscle was analyzed on a single axial CT image per level at the 5th, 8th, 10th thoracic, and 3rd lumbar vertebral body (T5, T8, T10, L3). Cross-sectional muscle area (cm 2 ), mean skeletal muscle radioattenuation (SMRA, in Hounsfield units), skeletal muscle index (SMI, in cm 2 /m 2 ), and skeletal muscle gauge (SMRA·SMI) were calculated. Measurements were summarized by age group (<45, 45-54, 55-64, 65-74, ≥75 years), sex, and vertebral level. Models enabling the calculation of age-, sex-, and vertebral-level-specific reference values were created and embedded into an open access online Web application. RESULTS The cohort consisted of 3804 participants (1917 [50.4%] males; mean age, 55.6 ± 11.8 years; range, 33-92 years) and 7162 CT scans. Muscle metrics qualitatively decreased with increasing age and female sex. CONCLUSIONS This study established age- and sex-specific reference values for CT-based muscle metrics at thoracic and lumbar vertebral levels. These values may be used in future research investigating the role of muscle mass and attenuation in health and disease, and to identify sarcopenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exertional breathlessness is a cardinal symptom of cardiorespiratory disease. RESEARCH QUESTION How does breathlessness abnormality, graded using normative reference equations during cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), relate to self-reported and physiological responses in people with chronic airflow limitation (CAL)? STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS An analysis was done of people aged ≥ 40 years with CAL undergoing CPET in the Canadian Cohort Obstructive Lung Disease study. Breathlessness intensity ratings (Borg CR10 scale [0-10 category-ratio scale for breathlessness intensity rating]) were evaluated in relation to power output (W), rate of oxygen uptake (V˙o2), and minute ventilation (V˙e) at peak exercise, using normative reference equations as follows: (1) probability of breathlessness normality (probability of having an equal or greater Borg CR10 rating among healthy; lower probability reflecting more severe breathlessness) and (2) presence of abnormal breathlessness (rating above the upper limit of normal). Associations with relevant participant-reported and physiologic outcomes were evaluated. RESULTS We included 330 participants (44% women): mean ± SD age, 64 ± 10 years (range, 40-89 years); FEV1/FVC, 57.3% ± 8.2%; FEV1, 75.6% ± 17.9% predicted. Abnormally low exercise capacity (peak V˙o2 < lower limit of normal) was present in 26%. Relative to peak W, V˙o2, and V˙e, abnormally high breathlessness was present in 26%, 25%, and 18% of participants. For all equations, abnormally high exertional breathlessness was associated with worse lung function, exercise capacity, self-reported symptom burden, physical activity, and health-related quality of life; and greater physiological abnormalities during CPET. INTERPRETATION Abnormal breathlessness graded using CPET normative reference equations was associated with worse clinical, physiological, and functional outcomes in people with CAL, supporting construct validity of abnormal exertional breathlessness.

Abstract
CONTEXT Guidelines recommend use of population- and trimester-specific thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (FT4) reference intervals (RIs) in pregnancy. Since these are often unavailable, clinicians frequently rely on alternative diagnostic strategies. We sought to quantify the diagnostic consequences of current recommendations. METHODS We included cohorts participating in the Consortium on Thyroid and Pregnancy. Different approaches were used to define RIs: a TSH fixed upper limit of 4.0 mU/L (fixed limit approach), a fixed subtraction from the upper limit for TSH of 0.5 mU/L (subtraction approach) and using nonpregnancy RIs. Outcome measures were sensitivity and false discovery rate (FDR) of women for whom levothyroxine treatment was indicated and those for whom treatment would be considered according to international guidelines. RESULTS The study population comprised 52 496 participants from 18 cohorts. Compared with the use of trimester-specific RIs, alternative approaches had a low sensitivity (0.63-0.82) and high FDR (0.11-0.35) to detect women with a treatment indication or consideration. Sensitivity and FDR to detect a treatment indication in the first trimester were similar between the fixed limit, subtraction, and nonpregnancy approach (0.77-0.11 vs 0.74-0.16 vs 0.60-0.11). The diagnostic performance to detect overt hypothyroidism, isolated hypothyroxinemia, and (sub)clinical hyperthyroidism mainly varied between FT4 RI approaches, while the diagnostic performance to detect subclinical hypothyroidism varied between the applied TSH RI approaches. CONCLUSION Alternative approaches to define RIs for TSH and FT4 in pregnancy result in considerable overdiagnosis and underdiagnosis compared with population- and trimester-specific RIs. Additional strategies need to be explored to optimize identification of thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy.

Abstract
Introduction. Bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) emerges as a technique that utilizes raw parameters of bioelectrical impedance analysis and assumes the use of a reference population for information analysis.Objective. To summarize the reference values, main studies objectives, approaches, pre-test recommendations and technical characteristics of the devices employed in studies utilizing BIVA among children and adolescents without diagnosed diseases.Methods. A systematic search was conducted in nine electronic databases (CINAHL, LILACS, PubMed, SciELO, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, Science Direct, MEDLINE, and Web of Science). Studies with different designs which allowed extracting information regarding reference values of BIVA in children and adolescents without diagnosed diseases, aged 19 years or younger, were included. The systematic review followed PRISMA procedures and was registered in PROSPERO (registration: CRD42023391069).Results. After applying the eligibility criteria, 36 studies were included. Twenty studies (55.6%) analyzed body composition using BIVA, thirteen studies (36.1%) aimed to establish reference values for BIVA, and three studies (8.3%) investigated the association of physical performance with BIVA. There was heterogeneity regarding the reference populations employed by the studies. Fifteen studies used their own sample as a reference (41.6%), four studies used the adult population as a reference (11.1%), and five studies used reference values from athletes (13.9%).Conclusion. Nutricional status and body composition were the main studies objectives. References values were not always adequate or specific for the sample and population. Furthermore, there was no pattern of pre-test recommendations among the studies.

Abstract
Introduction Although the growth of digital tools for cognitive health assessment, there's a lack of known reference values and clinical implications for these digital methods. This study aims to establish reference values for digital neuropsychological measures obtained through the smartphone-based cognitive assessment application, Defense Automated Neurocognitive Assessment (DANA), and to identify clinical risk factors associated with these measures. Methods The sample included 932 cognitively intact participants from the Framingham Heart Study, who completed at least one DANA task. Participants were stratified into subgroups based on sex and three age groups. Reference values were established for digital cognitive assessments within each age group, divided by sex, at the 2.5th, 25th, 50th, 75th, and 97.5th percentile thresholds. To validate these values, 57 cognitively intact participants from Boston University Alzheimer's Disease Research Center were included. Associations between 19 clinical risk factors and these digital neuropsychological measures were examined by a backward elimination strategy. Results Age- and sex-specific reference values were generated for three DANA tasks. Participants below 60 had median response times for the Go-No-Go task of 796 ms (men) and 823 ms (women), with age-related increases in both sexes. Validation cohort results mostly aligned with these references. Different tasks showed unique clinical correlations. For instance, response time in the Code Substitution task correlated positively with total cholesterol and diabetes, but negatively with high-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, and triglycerides. Discussion This study established and validated reference values for digital neuropsychological measures of DANA in cognitively intact white participants, potentially improving their use in future clinical studies and practice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study is to prospectively investigate the reference values of masseter and temporal muscle thicknesses by ultrasonography and muscle hardness values by shear wave elastography in healthy adults. METHODS The sample of the study consisted of a total of 160 healthy individuals aged between 18 and 59, including 80 women and 80 men. By examining the right and left sides of each participant, thickness and hardness values were obtained for 320 masseter muscles and 320 temporal muscles in total. RESULTS The mean masseter muscle thickness was found to be 1.09 cm at rest and 1.40 cm in contraction. The mean temporal muscle thickness was found to be 0.88 cm at rest and 0.98 cm in contraction. The thickness values of the masseter and temporal muscles were significantly greater in the male participants than in the female participants (P < .001). While there were significant differences between the right and left masseter muscle thickness values at rest and in contraction, the values of the temporal muscles did not show a significant difference between the sides. While the resting hardness (rSWE) of the masseter muscle was transversally 6.91 kPa and longitudinally 8.49 kPa, these values in contraction (cSWE) were found, respectively, 31.40 and 35.65 kPa. The median temporal muscle hardness values were 8.84 kPa at rest and 20.43 kPa in contraction. Masseter and temporal muscle hardness values at rest and in contraction were significantly higher among the male participants compared to the female participants (P < .001). CONCLUSION In this study, reference values for the thickness and hardness of the masseter and temporal muscles are reported. Knowing these values will make it easier to assess pain in the masseter and temporal muscles and determine the diagnosis and prognosis of masticatory muscle pathologies by allowing the morphological and functional assessments of these muscles, and it will identify ranges for reference parameters.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Walking speed (WS) represents an objective measure of motor function and health. We aimed to develop usual (UWS) and fast WS (FWS) norms for the general population using a regression-based approach, while considering age, sex, height, and education. DESIGN Cross-sectional analysis of a population-based study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS French Constances study (45-69 years). METHODS UWS/FWS were measured over 3 m (dynamic start) using photoelectric cells. We addressed selection effects (related to survey sampling and nonresponse) and missing data using a combination of inverse probability weighting (IPW) and multiple imputation (MI). Norms by sex, age, height, and education ( RESULTS Analyses are based on 44,772 participants (51.2% women) with a mean age of 56.8 years (SE = 0.2) for women and 57.3 years (SE = 0.2) for men, and a mean height of 161.4 cm (SE = 0.1) for women and 174.2 cm (SE = 0.1) for men after IPW/MI. WS estimates decreased after IPW/MI. The mean UWS was 116.9 cm/s (SE = 0.8) in women and 120.7 cm/s (SE = 0.8) in men, and the mean FWS was 168.7 cm/s (SE = 1.0) in women and 182.8 cm/s (SE = 1.2) in men. In the multiadjusted model, UWS/FWS decreased with age and increased with height and education. Men had faster FWS than women; they had slightly slower UWS than women in the low-education group, but there were no sex differences in the high-education group. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS We developed UWS/FWS norms by age, sex, height, and education for the French general population (45-69 years) that are available through a web app (https://cesp-proxy2.vjf.inserm.fr/NORMES-VM-EN/). These norms can be used to identify in midlife persons with lower motor performances than the general population, given their age, sex, height, and education, who are at higher risk of adverse outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) reference values are relied upon to accurately diagnose left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) pathologies. To date, reference values have been derived from modest sample sizes with limited patient diversity and attention to 1 but not both commonly used tracing techniques for papillary muscles and trabeculations. We sought to overcome these limitations by meta-analyzing normal reference values for CMR parameters stemming from multiple countries, vendors, analysts, and patient populations. METHODS We comprehensively extracted published and unpublished data from studies reporting CMR parameters in healthy adults. A steady-state free-precession short-axis stack at 1.5T or 3T was used to trace either counting the papillary muscles and trabeculations in the LV volume or mass. We used a novel Bayesian hierarchical meta-analysis model to derive the pooled lower and upper reference values for each CMR parameter. Our model accounted for the expected differences between tracing techniques by including informative prior distributions from a large external data set. RESULTS A total of 254 studies from 25 different countries were systematically reviewed, representing 12 812 healthy adults, of which 52 were meta-analyzed. For LV parameters counting papillary muscles and trabeculations in the LV volume, pooled normative reference ranges in men and women, respectively, were as follows: LV ejection fraction of 52% to 73% and 54% to 75%, LV end-diastolic volume index of 60 to 109 and 56 to 96 mL/m2, LV end-systolic volume index of 18 to 45 and 16 to 38 mL/m2, and LV mass index of 41 to 76 and 33 to 57 g/m2. For LV parameters counting papillary muscles and trabeculations in the LV mass, pooled normative reference ranges in men and women, respectively, were as follows: LV ejection fraction of 57% to 74% and 57% to 75%, LV end-diastolic volume index of 60 to 97 and 55 to 88 mL/m2, LV end-systolic volume index of 18 to 37 and 15 to 34 mL/m2, and LV mass index of 50 to 83 and 38 to 65 g/m2. For RV parameters, pooled normative reference ranges in men and women, respectively, were as follows: RV ejection fraction of 47% to 68% and 49% to 71%, RV end-diastolic volume index of 64 to 115 and 57 to 99 mL/m2, RV end-systolic volume index of 23 to 52 and 18 to 42 mL/m2, and RV mass index of 14 to 29 and 13 to 25 g/m2. CONCLUSIONS Our Bayesian hierarchical meta-analysis provides normative reference values for CMR parameters of LV and RV size, systolic function, and mass, encompassing both tracing techniques across a diverse multinational sample of healthy men and women.

Abstract
Shoulder pain is a common issue often linked to conditions such as subacromial impingement or rotator cuff lesions. The role of the acromion in these symptoms remains a subject of debate. This study aims to establish standardized values for commonly used acromion dimensions based on whole-body MRI scans of a large and healthy population and to investigate potential correlations between acromion shape and influencing factors such as sex, age, BMI, dominant hand, and shoulder pain. The study used whole-body MRI scans from the Study of Health in Pomerania, a German population-based study. Acromion index, acromion tilt, and acromion slope were measured. Interrater variability was tested with two independent, trained viewers on 100 MRI sequences before actual measurements started. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression were used to evaluate the results. We could define reference values based on a shoulder-healthy population for each acromion parameter within the 2.5 to 97.5 percentile. No significant differences were found in acromion slope, tilt, and index between male and female participants. No significant correlations were observed between acromion morphology and anthropometric parameters such as height, weight, or BMI. No significant differences were observed in acromion parameters between dominant and non-dominant hands or stated pain intensity. This study provides valuable reference values for acromion-related parameters, offering insight into the anatomy of a healthy shoulder. The findings indicate no significant differences in acromion morphology based on sex, weight, BMI, or dominant hand. Further research is necessary to ascertain the clinical implications of these reference values. The establishment of standardized reference values opens new possibilities for enhancing clinical decision making regarding surgical interventions, such as acromioplasty.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To develop reference values for cardiorespiratory fitness, as quantified by peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) and treadmill time, in patients aged 6 through 18 years referred for cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). STUDY DESIGN We reviewed a clinical pediatric CPET database for fitness data in children aged 6-18 years with no underlying heart disease. CPET was obtained via the Bruce protocol utilizing objectively confirmed maximal effort via respiratory exchange ratio. Fitness data (VO2peak and treadmill test duration) were analyzed to determine age- and sex-specific reference values for this pediatric cohort. RESULTS Data from 2025 pediatric CPETs (53.2% female) were included in the analyses. VO2peak increased with age in males, but not females. Treadmill test duration increased with age in both males and females. Fitness was generally higher in males when compared with females in the same age groups. CONCLUSIONS Our study provides extensive reference values for both VO2peak and total treadmill test time via the Bruce protocol for a pediatric population without known cardiac disease. Furthermore, the inclusion of objectively confirmed maximal exercise effort increases confidence in these findings compared with prior studies in this area. Clinicians performing CPET in pediatric populations can utilize these reference values to characterize test results according to representative peer data.

Abstract
Introduction The study findings investigated uric acid reference values and their association with a cluster of cardiometabolic risk factors among adolescents using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Methods A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using the KNHANES database from 2016 to 2018, involving a total of 2,462 participants aged between 10 and 18 years. Based on age- and sex-specific percentile curves for serum uric acid (SUA) levels from the KNHANES, we examined the correlation between cardiometabolic risk factors and serum uric acid levels. Results The percentile values of SUA varied with sex and age. In male subjects, SUA levels tended to increase from 10 to 14 years of age and plateaued after 14 years of age. Moreover, the overall uric acid level in females was found to be lower than that in males; the levels tended to increase at approximately 10 to 12 years old but were relatively consistent according to age. Mean uric acid levels increased according to obesity status in both males and females. However, correlation analysis revealed that SUA levels were associated with several metabolic risks even after adjusting for obesity. The detailed metabolic syndrome (MetS) components that were observed to be associated with an increase in uric acid levels were different between males and females, but overall, high uric acid levels increased MetS risk. Additionally, a significant increase in MetS-related odds ratio (OR) for components, including waist circumference (WC), triglyceride (TG) levels, and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), was observed. However, differences between sexes were apparent, with a more pronounced increase in OR based on SUA levels in girls. Discussion SUA levels were closely associated with MetS and its components, even in nonobese subjects. Therefore, high SUA levels in children and young adolescents should be closely monitored to prevent MetS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The primary objective of this study was to examine the glenohumeral subluxation index (GHSI) in a large general population cohort and to define reference values. Glenohumeral subluxation is important in the development and prediction of pathological states of the shoulder joint and in total shoulder arthroplasty. Therefore, another objective was to examine the influence of age, sex, body mass index, and body height and weight on GHSI. METHODS GHSI according to Walch was measured on bilateral magnetic resonance imaging of 3004 participants of the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP, aged 21-90 years). SHIP drew a sample of the adult general population of Pomerania (Northeastern Germany). Reference values for GHSI were assessed by quantile regression models. Associations of sex, age, and anthropometric markers with the GHSI were calculated by linear regression models. RESULTS A reference range between 42% and 55% for men with a mean of 49% ± 4% was defined, while the upper reference limit for women was 1% higher (mean, 50% ± 4%). Age was inversely associated with the GHSI in males (P < 0.001), while no significant association in females was observed (P = .625). Body weight and body mass index were positively associated (P < .001) without effect modification by sex. Heavy mechanical oscillations on the upper extremity showed no significant association with GHSI (P = .268). CONCLUSION The reference values for GHSI were expanded to a range of 42%-57% on magnetic resonance imaging. Several associations between GHSI and anthropometric properties are present. According to these associations, adjusted formulas are provided to enable individual, patient-specific diagnostics and therapy. Nevertheless, the clinical picture cannot be neglected.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS®) is commonly used across medical conditions. To facilitate interpretation of scores across countries, we calculated Dutch reference values for PROMIS Physical Function (PROMIS-PF), Pain Interference (PROMIS-PI), Pain Behavior (PROMIS-PB), Ability to Participate in Social Roles and Activities (PROMIS-APSRA), and Satisfaction with Social Roles and Activities (PROMIS-SSRA), as compared to US reference values. PATIENTS AND METHODS A panel completed full PROMIS-PF (n=1310), PROMIS-PI and PROMIS-PB (n=1052), and PROMIS-APSRA and PROMIS-SSRA (n=1002) item banks and reported their level of health per domain (no, mild, moderate, severe limitations). T-scores were calculated by sample and subgroups (age, gender, self-reported level of domain). Distribution-based and anchor-based thresholds for mild, moderate, and severe scores were determined. RESULTS Mean T-scores were close to the US mean of 50 for PROMIS-PF (49.8) and PROMIS-APSRA (50.6), lower for PROMIS-SSRA (47.5) and higher for PROMIS-PI (54.9) and PROMIS-PB (52.0). Distribution-based thresholds for mild, moderate, and severe scores were comparable to US recommended cut-off values (except for PROMIS-PI) but participants reported limitations 'earlier' than suggested thresholds. CONCLUSION Dutch reference values were close to US reference values for some PROMIS domains but not all. We recommend country-specific reference values to facilitate worldwide PROMIS use.KEY MESSAGESPROMIS offers universally applicable IRT-based efficient and patient-friendly measures to assess commonly relevant patient-reported outcomes across medical conditions.To support the use of PROMIS in daily clinical practice and research across the world, country-specific general population reference values should be obtained.More research is necessary to obtain reliable and valid cut-off values for what constitutes mild, moderate and severe scores from the patients' perspective.

Abstract
Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) occurs due to enzyme defects in adrenal steroidogenesis. The 21-hydroxylase deficiency accounts for 90-95% of cases, triggering accumulation of 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP). Early diagnosis through neonatal screening allows adequate treatment and reduced mortality. The purpose of the study was to determine 17-OHP cutoffs for the diagnosis of CAH in a public newborn screening program in Southern Brazil. A retrospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted to analyze 17-OHP levels in dried blood samples collected on filter paper of 317,745 newborns screened at a public newborn screening center from May 2014 to April 2017. Neonatal 17-OHP was measured in DBS samples using a time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay (GSP® kit 3305-0010; PerkinElmer). Different cutoffs were determined and stratified by birth weight. The incidence of CAH was 1:15,887 live births in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, with 20 cases of classical CAH diagnosed during the study period. Most newborns (80.73%) were white, and the prematurity rate was 9.8% in the study population. The combination of different percentiles, 98.5th for birth weight 2001-2500 g and 99.8th for the other birth weight groups, decreased false-positive results and increased specificity compared with current reference values to identify classical CAH cases. The local 17-OHP cutoffs determined were higher than those currently used by this screening program for all birth weight groups. The calculation of reference values from local population data and the combination of percentiles proved to be a valuable tool for proper diagnosis of CAH and reduction in the number of false positives.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Lear's macaw, Anodorhynchus leari (Psittaciformes, Psittacidae), is an endemic species of the Caatinga region in Brazil. With only a few free-living individuals that are constantly under threat from agricultural clearance, hunting, and trapping, A. leari is classified as "endangered" by the Red Book of Endangered Brazilian Fauna and by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. At the same time, the number of individuals in captivity has been growing due to the efforts of biologists and veterinarians in zoological parks to reproduce this species. Thus, having species-specific reference intervals for hematologic and biochemical measurands is essential to assess the health status of these captive and wild birds and guarantee their reproductive success. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to determine reference intervals for hematologic and biochemical measurands for A. leari kept in captivity in São Paulo Zoo, Brazil. METHODS Blood samples from 32 individuals were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Only samples from adults and healthy individuals were included in this study. All statistical analyses were performed according to the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology guidelines and available literature. RESULTS Reference values and reference intervals were determined for the captive population of Anodorhynchus leari. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to establish reference intervals for A. leari, which can aid the veterinarian in the interpretation of laboratory test results, helping in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of diseases of this endangered species of Brazilian fauna.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Reference values of body fat for competitive volleyball players are lacking, making it difficult to interpret measurement results. This review systematically summarized published data on the relative body fat of volleyball players and calculated potential differences between sex, measurement method, and competitive level. METHODS The protocol followed the Preferred Reported Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. The literature search was conducted using five electronic databases to retrieve all relevant publications from January 1, 2010, to July 1, 2021. The 63 studies including 2607 players that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed using random-effects models. Data were reported as pooled mean body fat with 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS Body fat for males and females was 12.8% (11.9-13.8%) and 22.8% (21.9-23.7%), respectively. Body fat was 18.3% (16.3-20.4%) measured via skinfolds, 18.4% (15.6-21.2%) via bioelectrical impedance analysis, 24.2% (20.4-28.0%) via dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and 21.6% (17.4-25.8%) via densitometry. Regional, national, and international-level players had body fat values of 19.5% (17.8-21.2%), 20.3% (18.6-22.0%), and 17.9% (15.7-20.4%), respectively. When the meta-regression was adjusted for the variables sex, measurement method, and competitive level, a significant difference between sex (p < 0.001), dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and skinfolds (p = 0.02), and national and international-level players (p = 0.02) was found. However, sensitivity analysis revealed that findings regarding measurement method and competitive level were not robust and should, therefore, be interpreted with caution. CONCLUSIONS Despite the limitations of published data, this meta-analysis provided pooled values for body fat of male and female volleyball players for different competitive levels and measurement methods.

Abstract
Background Post-concussion symptoms (PCS) are a common consequence of pediatric traumatic brain injury (pTBI). They include cognitive, emotional, and physical disturbances. To address the lack of age-adapted instruments assessing PCS after pTBI, this study examines the psychometric properties of the German 17-item post-TBI version of the Postconcussion Symptom Inventory (PCSI-SR8) in children aged 8-12 years. The study also aims to establish reference values based on data from a pediatric general population sample to better estimate the prevalence and clinical relevance of PCS after pTBI in clinical and research settings. Methods A total of 132 children aged 8-12 years from a post-acute TBI sample and 1,047 from a general population sample were included in the analyses. The questionnaire was translated from English into German and linguistically validated using forward and backward translation and cognitive debriefing to ensure comprehensibility of the developed version. Reliability and validity were examined; descriptive comparisons were made with the results of the English study. Measurement invariance (MI) analyses between TBI and general population samples were conducted prior to establishing reference values. Factors contributing to the total and scale scores of the PCSI-SR8 were identified using regression analyses. Reference values were calculated using percentiles. Results Most children (TBI: 83%; general population: 79%) rated at least one symptom as "a little" bothersome. The German PCSI-SR8 met the psychometric assumptions in both samples and was comparable to the English version. The four-factor structure comprising physical, emotional, cognitive, and fatigue symptoms could be replicated. The MI assumption was retained. Therefore, reference values could be provided to determine the symptom burden of patients in relation to a comparable general population. Clinical relevance of reported symptoms is indicated by a score of 8, which is one standard deviation above the mean of the general population sample. Conclusion The German version of the PCSI-SR8 is suitable for assessment of PCS after pTBI. The reference values allow for a more comprehensive evaluation of PCS following pTBI. Future research should focus on validation of the PCSI-SR8 in more acute phases of TBI, psychometric examination of the pre-post version, and child-proxy comparisons.

Abstract
Background Peripheral muscle fractional tissue oxygen extraction (pFTOE) represents the relative extraction of oxygen from the arterial to venous compartment, providing information about dynamic changes of oxygen delivery and oxygen consumption. The aim of the present study was to establish reference values of pFTOE during the first 24 h after birth in stable term and late preterm neonates. Methods The present study is a post-hoc analysis of secondary outcome parameters of prospective observational studies. Only stable neonates without infection, asphyxia and any medical support were eligible for our analysis to obtain normal values. For measurements of peripheral muscle tissue oxygenation index (pTOI) during the first 24 h after birth in term and preterm neonates, the NIRO200/NIRO200NX was used. Arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) was obtained by pulse oximetry. pFTOE was calculated out of pTOI and SpO2: pFTOE = (SpO2-pTOI)/SpO2. Measurements of neonates were stratified into four groups according to their respective measurement time point (6 h periods) after birth. Term and preterm neonates were analyzed separately. Mean values of measurements during the first time period (0-6 h after birth) were compared to measurements of the following time periods (second = 7-12 h, third = 13-18 h, fourth = 19-24 h after birth). Results Two-hundred-fourty neonates (55 term and 185 late preterm neonates) had at least one peripheral muscle NIRS measurements within the first 24 h after birth. Mean gestational age and birth weight were 39.4 ± 1.1 weeks and 3360 (2860-3680)g in term neonates and 34.0 ± 1.4 weeks and 2060 (1750-2350)g in preterm neonates, respectively. In term neonates pFTOE was 0.264 (0.229-0.300), 0.228 (0.192-0.264), 0.237 (0.200-0.274) and 0.220 (0.186-0.254) in the first, second, third and fourth time period. In preterm neonates pFTOE was 0.229 (0.213-0.246), 0.225 (0.209-0.240), 0.226 (0.210-0.242) and 0.238 (0.222-0.255) in the first, second, third and fourth time period. pFTOE did not show any significant changes between the time periods, neither in term nor in preterm neonates. Conclusion We provide reference values of pFTOE for stable term and late preterm neonates within the first 24 h after birth, which were stable when comparing four 6-h periods. These normal values are of great need for interpreting pFTOE in scientific context as well as for potential future clinical applications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this study, we aimed to evaluate the serum creatinine (SCr) levels with the reference change value (RCV) in patients receiving colistin treatment. METHODS We retrospectively recorded the SCr levels of 47 patients receiving colistin treatment before treatment and on days 3 and 7 after treatment. RCV was calculated with the asymmetrical RCV formula (Z = 1.64, P < .05). Percent (%) increase in the SCr results of the patients was compared with RCV and values exceeding RCV were regarded as statistically significant. RESULTS The RCV was calculated as 15.6% for SCr. Compared with pretreatment values, SCr value on day 3 was 32/47 and on day 7 it was 36/47; as these results exceeded RCV, they were considered statistically significant. CONCLUSION Use of RCV in the interpretation of results between serial measurements will provide a more rapid and sensitive method when making decisions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Changes in cortisol binding globulin (CBG) impact the total serum cortisol concentration and affect the accurate assessment of adrenal function. Free biologically cortisol can be calculated using different equations or directly measured after complicated procedures. METHODS The free cortisol index (FCI) obtained using the Bonte formula as well as the free cortisol concentration calculated (Coolens equation) were first estimated for 45 healthy workers. The CBG level was determined by a competitive radioimmunoassay and the total cortisol concentration, was measured with an electrochemiluminescent assay. The correlations between FCI, the free cortisol concentrations calculated and the free cortisol levels measured with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry after equilibrium dialysis were studied for those 45 samples. Reference limits were established on 158 healthy hospital workers and patients with serum samples collected between 7:30 am and 10 am. RESULTS The FCI as well as the free cortisol concentrations calculated obtained for the 45 samples correlated significantly with the free cortisol levels measured. Although the cortisol and CBG levels were statistically higher in women using contraceptives compared with women not taking them as well as men, the calculated FCI and free cortisol concentrations did not differ between these groups. The medians (P2.5-P97.5) obtained for the 158 healthy workers were respectively 26.4% (12.3-51.6%) and 10.6 nmol/L (4.3-26.7 nmol/L). CONCLUSIONS This study highlighted a significant correlation between the FCI, the free cortisol concentrations calculated and the free cortisol levels measured with LC-MS/MS, it has also allowed the establishment of reference intervals for calculated FCI and free cortisol.

Abstract
The ordering of clinical haemostasis tests is increasing in Burkina Faso due to the newly emergence of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. However, appropriate local reference values (RV) are lacking. Our study aimed to establish RV for prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) and fibrinogen assays. In 2020, we carried out a cross-sectional study at the transfusion centre of Ouagadougou and included 280 healthy blood donors (140 males and 140 females) as reference subjects (RS) according to CLSI guidelines (C28 A3). From each RS a 5 mL blood sample had been withdrawn in citrated tubes. We performed PT, aPTT and fibrinogen assays using the Sysmex™ CA660 coagulometer and Siemens™ reagents. RV were calculated using the "central 95 percentile" method. Reference values of PT, aPTT and Fibrinogen were respectively [73.84%-117.50%], [20,01-29.45] seconds and [2.04-3.83] g/L for females and [58.81%-112,31%] seconds, [20,9-29,98] seconds and [1.58-3.35] g/L for males. We report for the first time locally appropriate haemostasis RV for the Burkina Faso adult's population. They will be of clinical use to our health care professionals.

Abstract
Morais et al. conducted a pioneering study with Brazilian indigenous populations to determine reference values for immunologic cells from healthy adult individuals. The main findings included a higher relative median for T lymphocyte subsets in females than males, and T CD3+, T CD4+, and T CD8+ relative values were statistically different when compared with Brazilian populations from other Brazilian regions. The relative medians of CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+ T cells were significantly higher in women than in men in a healthy indigenous population. Demographic and ethnic diversity of the Brazilian population can be associated with quantitative modifications in the immunologic cells of healthy individuals. OBJECTIVE The establishment of reference values for a subset of leukocytes is common in clinical practice, and ethnic variations are strongly associated with disease development. In Brazil, indigenous people are vulnerable to infections, and few studies have described the health and disease conditions of this population. This study aimed to provide reference values for immunological cell subsets in indigenous Brazilians living in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. METHODS Flow cytometry and 4-color combinations of monoclonal antibodies were used to characterize cells. A total of 115 healthy adults, mostly females (72%), were included in the study. The results are presented as mean and median (2.5%-97.5% percentiles) for T and B lymphocytes, CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, Natural Killer cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells, providing an average immunological profile for the population in question. RESULTS The relative medians of CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+ T cells were significantly higher in women than in men in a healthy indigenous population. CONCLUSION To our knowledge, cell reference data from indigenous Brazilians are unknown in the literature. The immune cell results presented in this pioneering study will contribute to the clinical and laboratory evaluation of the Brazilian indigenous population, especially given the important differences when compared with other Brazilian ethnic groups.

Abstract
CONTEXT The lack of syndrome-specific reference ranges for thyroid function tests (TFT) among pediatric patients with Down syndrome (DS) results in an overestimation of the occurrence of hypothyroidism in this population. OBJECTIVE To (a) outline the age-dependent distribution of TFT among pediatric patients with DS; (b) describe the intraindividual variability of TFT over time; and (c) assess the role of elevated thyrotropin (TSH) in predicting the future onset of overt hypothyroidism. METHODS In this retrospective, monocentric, observational analysis, we included 548 patients with DS (0-18 years) longitudinally assessed between 1992 and 2022. Exclusion criteria were abnormal thyroid anatomy, treatments affecting TFT, and positive thyroid autoantibodies. RESULTS We determined the age-dependent distribution of TSH, FT3, and FT4 and outlined the relative nomograms for children with DS. Compared with non-syndromic patients, median TSH levels were statistically greater at any age (P < .001). Median FT3 and FT4 levels were statistically lower than controls (P < .001) only in specific age classes (0-11 for FT3, 11-18 years for FT4). TSH levels showed a remarkable fluctuation over time, with a poor (23%-53%) agreement between the TSH centile classes at 2 sequential assessments. Finally, the 75th centile was the threshold above which TSH values predicted future evolution into overt hypothyroidism with the best statistical accuracy, with a satisfactory negative predictive value (0.91), but poor positive predictive value (0.15). CONCLUSION By longitudinally assessing TFT in a wide pediatric DS population, we outlined the syndrome-specific reference nomograms for TSH, FT3, and FT4 and demonstrated a persistent upward shift of TSH compared to non-syndromic children.

Abstract
Background Identifying atypical lower limb biomechanics may help prevent the occurrence or recurrence of running-related injuries. No reference values for spatiotemporal or kinetic variables in healthy recreational runners are available in the scientific literature to support clinical management. Purpose To (1) present speed- and sex-stratified reference values for spatiotemporal and kinetic variables in healthy adult recreational runners; (2) identify the determinants of these biomechanical variables; and (3) develop reference regression equations that can be used as a guide in a clinical context. Study Design Descriptive laboratory study. Methods This study involved 860 healthy recreational runners (age, 19-65 years [38.5% women]) tested on an instrumented treadmill at their preferred running speed in randomly allocated, standardized running shoes with either hard or soft cushioning. Twelve common spatiotemporal and kinetic variables-including contact time, flight time, duty factor, vertical oscillation, step cadence, step length, vertical impact peak (VIP), time to VIP, vertical average loading rate, vertical stiffness, peak vertical ground-reaction force (GRF), and peak braking force-were derived from GRF recordings. Reference values for each biomechanical variable were calculated using descriptive statistics and stratified by sex and running speed category (≤7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and ≥15 km/h). Correlations and multiple regression analyses were performed to identify potential determinants independently associated with each biomechanical variable and generate reference equations. Results The mean running speed was 10.5 ± 1.3 km/h and 9 ± 1.1 km/h in men and women, respectively. While all potential predictors were significantly correlated with many of the 12 biomechanical variables, only running speed showed high correlations (r > 0.7). The adjusted R2 of the multiple regression equations ranged from 0.19 to 0.88. Conclusion This study provides reference values and equations that may guide clinicians and researchers in interpreting spatiotemporal and kinetic variables in recreational runners. Clinical Relevance The reference values can be used as targets for clinicians working with recreational runners in cases where there is a clinical suspicion of a causal relationship between atypical biomechanics and running-related injury.

Abstract
Introduction Neurological impairment in multiple sclerosis is highly variable among patients and over time it is difficult to quantify. The Multiple Sclerosis Outcome Assessment Consortium established sensitive, cost-effective, clinically significant, and reproducible measures of different functional systems to measure outcomes in clinical trials. However, their use in clinical care routines is not widespread due to time and training constraints. Objective To evaluate the self-administration feasibility of the timed 25-foot walking, symbol-digit-modality, and 9-peg hole tests in healthy individuals. Materials and methods We performed a descriptive pilot study. Healthy individuals between 18 and 80 years of age were included. The Timed 25-Foot Walking Test (T25- FWT), the Symbol Digit Modality Test (SDMT), and the Nine-Hole Peg Test (9-HPT) (using the dominant and non-dominant hand) were administered by a trained physician, who also instructed the subjects about test self-administration. The correlation and agreement, between the guided and self-administered tests were assessed with Pearson and Spearman coefficients and the Bland-Altman method. Results Thirty-eight healthy volunteers were included. The median age was 36 (range: 23-55) years old, and 55.26% were female. The correlation coefficient between guided and selfadministered tests was 0.37 for the T25-FWT (p=0.01), 0.54 for the SDMT (p<0.001), and 0.64 and 0.65 for the 9-HPT, in the dominant and non-dominant hands, respectively (p<0,001). Both forms of administration were concordant for the T25-FWT (95%CI: -1,49 to 1,43), the 9-HPT with dominant hand (95%CI: -5,23 to 4,09), the 9-HPT with non-dominant hand (95%CI: -7,75 to 7,14) and the SDMT (95% CI: -20,94 to 24,10). Conclusions We provide a proof of concept related to the feasibility of the selfadministration of the T25-FWT, the 9-HPT, and the SDMT, as a tool to improve monitoring in routine clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High-resolution ultrasound of the tibial nerve has been used for screening of several neurologic disorders, but normative reference values of tibial nerve cross-sectional areas (CSA) have not been well established. Thus, the present meta-analysis was performed to generate normative estimates of tibial nerve CSA at various sites of the lower limb based on ultrasonography. METHODS Google Scholar, Scopus and PubMed were searched for potential studies. Studies were required to report tibial nerve CSA in healthy individuals to be included. A random-effect meta-analysis was performed to calculate tibial nerve CSA values. Subgroup and statistical analyses were performed to study covariates. RESULTS Forty-eight eligible articles consisting of 2695 limbs were included. The average tibial nerve CSA was found to be 10.9 mm2 at the ankle (95% CI: 9.9-11.8) and should not exceed 11.8 mm2 in healthy adults. At the popliteal fossa, the overall CSA was 21.7 mm2 (95% CI: 17.5-25.8) in healthy adults. At both sites, the average tibial nerve CSA was significantly larger in adults than in children, and the differences by geographical region were not statistically significant. At the ankle, tibial nerve CSA increased with age and body mass index, while at the popliteal fossa it increased with age and weight. CONCLUSIONS our findings indicate that the tibial nerve varied not only along its course but also among sub-variables. Establishing normal references values of tibial nerve CSA is helpful to differentiate healthy from diseased tibial nerves such as in diabetic peripheral neuropathy or tarsal tunnel syndrome.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to measure how age affects the speech recognition threshold (SRT50) of the Oldenburg Sentence Test (OLSA) and the listening effort at the corresponding signal-to-noise ratio (SNRcut). The study also investigated the effect of the spatial configuration of sound sources and noise signals on SRT50 and SNRcut. To achieve this goal, the study used olnoise and icra5 noise presented from one or more spatial locations from the front and back. Ninety-nine participants with age-related hearing loss in the 18-80 years age range, specifically in the 18-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60, 61-70, and 71-80 age groups, participated in this study. Speech recognition and listening effort in noise were measured and compared between the different age groups, different spatial sound configurations and noise signals. Speech recognition in noise decreased with age and became significant from the age group of 50-51. The decrease in SRT50 with age was greater for icra5 noise than for olnoise. For all age groups, SRT50 and SNRcut were better for icra5 noise than for olnoise. The measured age-related reference data for SRT50 and SNRcut can be used in further studies in listeners with age-related hearing loss and hearing aid or implant users.

Abstract
Objective Establish median nerve CSA reference values and identify patient-level factors impacting diagnostic thresholds. Methods Studies were identified through a robust search of multiple databases, and quality assessment was conducted using a modified version of the National Institute of Health Study Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies. A meta-analysis was performed to identify normative values stratified by anatomic location. A meta-regression was conducted to examine heterogeneity effects of age, sex, and laterality. Results The meta-analysis included 73 studies; 41 (56.2%) were high quality. The median nerve CSA [95% CI] was 6.46mm2 [6.09-6.84], 8.68mm2 [8.22-9.13], and 8.60mm2 [8.23-8.97] at the proximal forearm, the carpal tunnel inlet, and the proximal carpal tunnel, respectively. Age was positively associated with CSA at the level of proximal carpal tunnel (β=0.03mm2, p=0.047). Men (9.42mm2, [8.06-10.78]) had statistically larger proximal tunnel CSA (p = 0.03) as compared to women (7.71mm2, [7.01-8.42]). No difference was noted in laterality. Conclusion A reference value for median nerve CSA in the carpal tunnel is 8.60mm2. Adjustments may be required in pediatrics or older adults. The diagnostic threshold of 10.0mm2 for male patients should be cautiously applied as the upper limit of normative averages surpasses this threshold.
