Analysis of enterobiasis in the Czech Republic in 2018-2022

AIM

Pinworm infection (known as enterobiasis or oxyuriasis) is one of the most common parasitic diseases globally and in the Czech Republic (CZ). The aim of this study is to analyse the available epidemiological data on the incidence of enterobiasis in the CZ from 2018-2022.

METHODS

A descriptive analysis was done of enterobiasis (ICD-10 code B80) data reported to the electronic Infectious Disease Information System in the CZ from 2018 to 2022. Data processing and analysis were conducted using MS Excel 2016. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the association between the probability of hospitalization and categorical variables using STATA version 17. The ECDC Map Maker tool (EMMa) was used to create the incidence map.

RESULTS

A total of 4,836 cases were reported during the study period, with an average annual incidence of 9.1 cases per 100,000 population. The highest number of cases occurred in 2019 (n = 1,174), and the lowest in 2021 (n = 780). The disease was most common in the paediatric population, with the highest average age-specific incidence rates observed in children aged 5-9 years (80.9 per 100,000 population) and 10-14 years (42.3 per 100,000 population). Of 14 administrative regions of the CZ, the Olomouc Region had the highest average annual incidence (28.7 per 100,000 population), while the Pilsen Region had the lowest (2.2 per 100,000 population). A total of 472 (9.8%) patients needed hospitalization, most of them in the categories 10-14 years (n = 200, 42.4%) and 5-9 years (n = 178, 38%). The highest hospitalization rate was found in the age group 75+ (36.4%). A significantly higher probability of hospitalization was found in the age groups 6-19 years and 65+ compared to working-age population with enterobiasis. A significantly lower probability of hospitalization was seen in 2020-2022 compared to 2019. No difference in the hospitalization rates was noted between genders. No enterobiasis-related death was reported during the study period. The disease occurs year-round. A decrease in reported cases was observed annually during the school summer holidays in July and August. Neither outbreak nor imported cases were noted.

CONCLUSION

Given that enterobiasis is often asymptomatic, many cases are not captured in the surveillance system. The Czech prevalence data indicate that it mainly affects the paediatric population. Therefore, preventive measures and programs should primarily target children.

Enterobius vermicularis in Brazil: An integrative review

Enterobius vermicularis, an intestinal helminth, is transmitted through the ingestion of eggs found in food, water, dust, or other fomites, including infected individuals. This review aimed to examine the frequency and distribution of E. vermicularis infections in Brazil between 1991 and 2022. The conducted bibliographic survey revealed that the frequency of E. vermicularis infections in Brazil ranged from 0.1 to 26.1%, depending on factors such as population ethnicity, individual age group, geographic area, time frame, and diagnostic method. However, these findings were based on a limited number of publications, suggesting that the actual prevalence rates of E. vermicularis infection may still be unknown and potentially underestimated.

Genotype Distribution of Enterobius vermicularis Isolates from Northwest Provinces of Iran

Background

Human infection with Enterobius vermicularis occurs worldwide. The most common clinical manifestation of a pinworm infection is an itchy anal region. This parasite is incidentally found in appendicitis. This study aims to characterize and genotype this parasite from different samples inferred by mt-DNA.

Methods

Forty appendectomies for acute clinical appendicitis, 40 positive scotch-tape samples, and 10 adult females worm isolated from patients. Genetic differentiation, haplotype differences, and isolates population structure were analyzed based on the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (cox1) gene.

Results

It has been demonstrated that all isolations in the appendectomies specimens are similar, and the genetic difference divergence is seen in adult worm specimens. The neutral indices of the samples did not show a significant difference and show that there is no intra-specific and population distribution diversity.

Conclusion

Our results show different haplotypes in the B type of E. vermicularis population and add new information about genotyping of these parasites in Iran. In comparison with other studies, intra-specific variation of this parasite from Iran was observed.

Seeds or Parasites? Clinical and Histopathological Features of Seeds and Parasites in the Appendix

OBJECTIVE

Parasites and plant seeds may both be found in appendectomy specimens. Each plant seed has a different appearance and can thus exhibit wide variations under the microscope. Fragmented seeds may histologically mimic parasites. The differential diagnosis between seeds and parasites can be challenging in such cases. This study aimed to determine the incidence of parasites, seeds, and foreign bodies in appendectomy materials and highlight the most characteristic histopathological features associated with these structures.

MATERIAL AND METHOD

In this study, pathology slides of 9,480 patients, who underwent appendectomy between 2010 and 2021, were reviewed, and cases that contained parasites, seeds, or foreign bodies were identified. We reviewed the literature on seeds and parasites in appendectomy specimens.

RESULTS

Parasites were observed in 56 (0.6%) cases. Of these cases, 45 had Enterobius vermicularis (80%), and 11 had Taenia subspecies (20%). Plant seeds were observed in 47 cases (0.5%), and were macroscopically recognizable in 5 of them as olive, lemon, and cherry seeds. Parasites and seeds were usually observed in the lumen of appendix vermiformis, filled with abundant fecal materials.

CONCLUSION

Seeds are seen in approximately 0.5% of the appendectomy specimens. Though rarely seen, the fragmented seed appearance may cause diagnostic difficulties. In this context, the key morphological features of parasites and plant seeds outlined in this study may be helpful in their differential diagnosis.

Enterobiasis and its risk factors in urban, rural and indigenous children of subtropical Argentina

A cross-sectional survey to assess the prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis infection and its associated factors among the child population of infant, preschool and school age in the urban, rural and indigenous population of Iguazú city, in subtropical Argentina was presented. Additionally, the status of enterobiasis at country level was reviewed and analysed. Enterobius vermicularis presence was assessed employing an oviscopic serial sampling technique. Statistical analysis of socio-demographic determinants was performed by generalized linear mixed models at individual, household and community levels. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines were used to gather national information about E. vermicularis prevalence spanning the decade 2010–2020. A total of 916 children from 470 families participated. Overall prevalence was 29.8%, with 25.3, 30.7 and 34.2% detected for children inhabiting urban, rural and indigenous villages, respectively. The multi-level analysis showed that the presence of E. vermicularis was mostly determined by individual (e.g. age, playing habits, previous pinworm infection) and household-level factors (e.g. family size, overcrowding conditions). Interestingly, WASH variables, such as waste disposal, analysed at community level were also important. Data were analysed to provide eco-epidemiological features of enterobiasis in a heterogeneous subtropical child population in the same territory but with different socio-sanitary realities. The importance of promoting multi-level actions against the determinants identified, to control this public health problem integratively was evidenced. The scoping review of national data updated the state of knowledge of this parasitosis, identifying risk determinants and gaps in knowledge at country level.

Retrospective analysis and time series forecasting with automated machine learning of ascariasis, enterobiasis and cystic echinococcosis in Romania

The epidemiology of neglected tropical diseases (NTD) is persistently underprioritized, despite NTD being widespread among the poorest populations and in the least developed countries on earth. This situation necessitates thorough and efficient public health intervention. Romania is at the brink of becoming a developed country. However, this South-Eastern European country appears to be a region that is susceptible to an underestimated burden of parasitic diseases despite recent public health reforms. Moreover, there is an evident lack of new epidemiologic data on NTD after Romania's accession to the European Union (EU) in 2007. Using the national ICD-10 dataset for hospitalized patients in Romania, we generated time series datasets for 2008-2018. The objective was to gain deep understanding of the epidemiological distribution of three selected and highly endemic parasitic diseases, namely, ascariasis, enterobiasis and cystic echinococcosis (CE), during this period and forecast their courses for the ensuing two years. Through descriptive and inferential analysis, we observed a decline in case numbers for all three NTD. Several distributional particularities at regional level emerged. Furthermore, we performed predictions using a novel automated time series (AutoTS) machine learning tool and could interestingly show a stable course for these parasitic NTD. Such predictions can help public health officials and medical organizations to implement targeted disease prevention and control. To our knowledge, this is the first study involving a retrospective analysis of ascariasis, enterobiasis and CE on a nationwide scale in Romania. It is also the first to use AutoTS technology for parasitic NTD.

[Surveillance of Enterobius vermicularis infections among children in Shandong Province from 2016 to 2020]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the prevalence and changing trend of Enterobius vermicularis infections among children in Shandong Province, so as to provide the scientific evidence for the adjustment and development of the enterobiasis control strategy.

METHODS

Soil-borne nematodiasis surveillance sites were assigned in 51 counties (districts, cities) in Shandong Province from 2016 to 2020, and the E. vermicularis infections were detected using a modified Kato-Katz technique and the cellophane tape method among children at ages of 3 to 9 years living in these surveillance sites. The epidemiological profiles of E. vermicularis-infected children were descriptively analyzed.

RESULTS

A total of 5 060 children at ages of 3 to 9 years were detected in 51 soil-borne nematodiasis surveillance sites in Shandong Province from 2016 to 2020, and the overall prevalence of E. vermicularis infections was 2.23%. The annual prevalence of E. vermicularis infections was 3.99% (26/651), 1.70% (14/824), 0.96% (8/837), 2.90% (45/1 552) and 1.67% (20/1 196) from 2016 to 2020, respectively, with a significant difference detected among years (χ² = 21.455, P < 0.01). The prevalence of E. vermicularis infections was 1.25% (15/1 198), 1.85% (14/755), 3.18% (84/2 640) and 0 (0/467) among children from central, eastern, southern and northern Shandong Province (χ² = 27.326, P < 0.01). In addition, there was no significant difference in the prevalence of E. vermicularis infections between male (1.98%, 56/2 831) and female children (2.56%, 57/2 229) (χ² = 1.916, P > 0.05); however, there was age-specific prevalence of E. vermicularis infections among children (χ² = 16.448, P < 0.05), with the greatest prevalence detected among children at ages of 6 years (3.18%, 25/786), and the lowest prevalence seen among children at ages of 3 years (0.75%, 6/800).

CONCLUSIONS

The prevalence of E. vermicularis infections remained at a medium level among children at ages of 3 to 9 years in Shandong Province from 2016 to 2020, with region-specific prevalence found across the province. An integrated strategy is required for enterobiasis control.

[Prevalence and influencing factors of Enterobius vermicularis infections among children in Fanxian County of Henan Province in 2019]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the prevalence and influencing factors of Enterobius vermicularis infections among children in Fanxian County, Henan Province in 2019, so as to provide insights into the management of enterobiasis.

METHODS

Five kindergartens were selected in urban and rural areas of Fanxian County, Henan Province using the stratified sampling method in 2019, and a census of E. vermicularis infections was performed among all children in the kindergartens. E. vermicularis eggs were detected using adhesive and scotch cellophane-tape anal swab methods, and the basic characteristics of children and their families, health habits and the kindergartens' information were investigated with questionnaires. Logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the risk factors and protective factors of pinworm infection in children.

RESULTS

A total of 671 children were tested, and the mean prevalence of E. vermicularis infections was 15.50% (104/671). The prevalence of E. vermicularis infections was higher among children in rural kindergartens (28.13%, 72/256) than in urban kindergartens (7.71%, 32/415) (χ² = 50.380, P < 0.01), and greater in private kindergartens (32.26%, 60/186) than in public kindergartens (9.07%, 44/485) (χ² = 55.183, P < 0.01). There was no gender-specific prevalence of E. vermicularis infections among children (χ² = 1.442, P > 0.05), and the prevalence of E. vermicularis infections presented a tendency towards a rise with age (χ²_trend = 8.373, P < 0.05) and school grade (χ²_trend = 30.274, P < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis identified rural kindergartens and high grades as risk factors, and separate washing of children's and adults' cloths, frequent bathing and frequent dinnerware disinfection in kindergartens as protective factors for E. vermicularis infections among children. In addition, there was no significant difference in the detection of E. vermicularis infections among children by using adhesive (73.08%, 76/104) and scotch cellophane-tape anal swab methods (56.73%, 59/104) (χ² = 3.959, P > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The prevalence of E. vermicularis infection is high among children in Fanxian Country, Henan Province. Health education and surveillance of enterobiasis are required to be intensified among children in rural kindergartens and senior grades and their parents and teachers.

Enterobius vermicularis Infection among Preschool Children: A 12-Year (2008-2019) Survey in Large Cities and Provinces of the Republic of Korea

A 12-year nationwide survey (2008-2019) was performed to investigate the prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis infection among preschool children in Seoul, 4 large cites (Busan, Incheon, Daegu, and Ulsan), and 9 provinces (grouped into 5 localities) in the Republic of Korea (=Korea). The survey was carried out once a year by 16 regional offices of the Korea Association of Health Promotion. The cello-tape perianal swab method (1 smear per child) was applied to detect eggs of E. vermicularis and other helminths. According to the results, the egg positive rate of E. vermicularis infection in 2008-2009 was 1.8-2.0%, but it decreased gradually to 0.6% in 2019 (P<0.05). The prevalence was significantly higher in boys (0.7-5.0%, mean 1.8%) than in girls (0.5-2.8%, mean 1.3%) (P<0.05). The 2 most southern localities, Jejudo (Province) and Jeolla-do (inclusive of Jeollabuk-do and Jeollanam-do) and a mid-western province, Gyeonggi-do, revealed higher prevalences, whereas Seoul and Gangwon-do showed lower prevalences. The results indicate that a low-grade prevalence of E. vermicularis infection (less than 4%) has been maintained for the recent 12 years among preschool children in Korea. Continuous monitoring of enterobiasis in the child age group is necessary in Korea.

[National surveillance on Enterobius vermicularis infections among children at ages of 3 to 9 years in China from 2016 to 2018]

OBJECTIVE

To understand the epidemic status of Enterobius vermicularis infections among children aged 3 to 9 years in China, so as to provide scientific basis for the formulation of the prevention and control strategies for enterobiasis.

METHODS

The national surveillance of enterobiasis was performed in 736 national surveillance sites (counties) from 30 provinces (municipalities/autonomous regions) in China from 2016 to 2018. All surveillance sites were classified into parts according to the geographical directions, including the eastern, western, southern, northern and middle parts, and a township was randomly selected from each part. Then, an administrative village was randomly selected from the township, and 200 permanent residents at ages of over 3 years living in the administrative village were randomly selected using the cluster sampling method. A total of 1 000 residents were examined in each surveillance site. E. vermicularis infections were detected among children at ages of 3 to 9 years using the modified Kato-Katz technique and the adhesive cellophane-tape perianal swab method, and the prevalence of infections was calculated and compared.

RESULTS

The prevalence of E. vermicularis infections was 2.50%, 2.84% and 2.46% among children at ages of 3 to 9 years in the 736 surveillance sites from 30 provinces (municipalities/autonomous regions) in China from 2016 to 2018, and there was no gender-specific prevalence of E. vermicularis infections (P > 0.05). Enterobiasis was main prevalent in the southern and southwestern part of China (Jiangxi, Guangxi, Guangdong, Sichuan, Fujian, Chongqing and Hainan), with 5.00% prevalence and greater, and the highest prevalence was seen in Jiangxi and Guangxi for successive 3 years. In addition, the prevalence of E. vermicularis infections was higher in children with the Han ethnicity than in those with the minority ethnicity, and a high prevalence was found in children at ages of 4 to 7 years, and a low prevalence seen in children at ages of 3, 8 and 9 years.

CONCLUSIONS

The prevalences of E. vermicularis infections have not changed much among children at ages of 3 to 9 years in China from 2016 to 2018, and high prevalence is seen in southern and southwestern China, which should be given a high priority.

[Investigation of Enterobius vermicularis infection in children in Jiangxi Province in 2014]

OBJECTIVE

To know the status of Enterobius vermicularis infection in children in Jiangxi Province in 2014, so as to provide the evidence for the formulation of prevention and control measures.

METHODS

A survey was performed according to the scheme of the 3rd Principal Human Parasites of Jiangxi Province in 2014. Based on the ecological regions, a stratified cluster sampling method was applied by the economic and geographic situation. There were 84 survey sites from 28 counties, and the basic data were also collected in the different investigation sites, and the round-end tube adhesive cellophane anal swab was used to examine E. vermicularis eggs for the children aged 3-6 years.

RESULTS

A total of 1 486 children aged 3-6 years were detected, the E. vermicularis infection rate was 13.73% (204/1 486), and the infection rates were 13.89% (114/821) and 13.53% (90/665) in the male and female, respectively. The infection rate in the different age groups showed a gradual rise then fall trend, the lowest infection rate was 10.05% (38/378) in the 3-year age group, and the highest infection rate was 18.24% (81/444) in the 5-year age group. The infection rates in the high, medium and low-income survey sites were 13.79% (87/631), 17.23% (51/296), and 11.81% (66/559), respectively. The E. vermicularis infection rates in the 4 ecological regions were from 12.34% to 17.74%, but there was no significant difference among the different ecological regions (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The status of E. vermicularis infection in children in Jiangxi Province is relatively serious, and therefore, the parasitic disease control sectors should continue to strengthen the monitoring and control work of E. vermicularis infection in children.

Enterobius vermicularis: A Cause of Abdominal Pain Mimicking Acute Appendicitis in Children. A Retrospective Cohort Study

BACKGROUND

Enterobius vermicularis (EV) is the most common helminthic infection in the world. This small parasite is predominant in the pediatric population. The presence of EV in the appendix can cause or mimick appendicitis. The aim of our study was to compare patients with EV infection and those without EV infection, and to identify predictive factors that may help the diagnosis of EV infection in patients presenting with right iliac fossa pain and avoid negative appendectomy.

METHODS

A retrospective analysis of all the appendices removed between January 2012 and December 2016 was conducted at the department of pediatric surgery, Hedi Chaker Hospital, Sfax, Tunisia. According to the final histopathological diagnosis, patients with EV infection were compared to those without EV infection. Data including age, sex, white blood cell (WBC) count, neutrophil count, eosinophil count, C-reactive protein, and ultrasound results for both groups were analyzed and compared. The study protocol was approved by the local hospital ethics committee. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS, version 20. Descriptive analysis in the form of mean and standard deviation was performed on demographic information. Differences between groups were assessed using the student t-test for continuous variables and the χ2 test and Fisher exact test where appropriate for categorical variables.

RESULTS

In total, 540 pediatric appendectomies were performed. Overall, 63.5% of patients were male and 36.5% were female. Mean age was 9.28 ± 2.77 years. 22.2% of procedures were completed laparoscopically, 76.5% were open and 1.3% were converted. The negative appendectomy rate was 11.1%. EV was present in 9.8% of cases. Comparison of clinical, biological, and ultrasound findings between two groups of patients with EV (EV+) and those without EV (EV-) shows a statistical significance for pruritus ani (P < 0.001), WBC count (P < 0.001), neutrophil count (P < 0.001), C-reactive protein (CRP) (P = 0.001), positive ultrasound (P < 0.001), perforation rate (P = 0.009), and negative appendectomy rate (P < 0.001). No significant difference between the two groups was seen when comparing gender (P = 0.271), vomiting (P = 0.130), eosinophil count (P = 0.915), and procedure (P = 0.536).

CONCLUSION

EV was seen in 9.8% of pediatric appendectomies in our study. Pruritus ani, normal WBC count, normal neutrophil count, and normal CRP level at presentation could predict EV infection in children who present with right iliac fossa pain.

Parasitic infestation in appendicitis. A retrospective analysis of 660 patients and brief literature review

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the incidence of parasitic infestations and inflammation accompanying parasitosis in a series of appendectomy cases.  Methods: Six-hundred-sixty  patients who had undergone appendectomy in Bingöl State Hospital, Bingol, Turkey with the preliminary diagnosis of appendicitis between January 2012 and February 2015 were included in this retrospective study. They were retrospectively evaluated in terms of age, gender and pathological findings. Cases diagnosed with parasitic infestations were re-evaluated histopathologically for inflammatory response.  Results: The mean age was 19.6 years, and the male/female ratio was 1.8. When evaluated in terms of histopathological diagnoses, 573 (86.8%) were diagnosed as acute appendicitis, and parasitic infestation was identified in 12 (1.8%). Among cases with parasitic infestation, Enterobius vermicularis was identified in 9 (75%) and Taenia in 3 (25%) cases. Of cases with Enterobius vermicularis, 4 (44.4%) had lymphoid hyperplasia, 1 (11.1%) had normal-structured appendix vermiformis, and 4 (44.4%) had findings of acute appendicitis. All cases with taeniasis had an inflammatory response: acute appendicitis was identified in 2 (66%) and acute gangrenous appendicitis in 1 (33%) of them.  Conclusion: Parasitic infestations are among the probable causes in appendicitis etiology and should be kept in mind during differential diagnosis. However, whether every parasitic infestation leads to appendiceal inflammatory response is controversial.

[Analysis of human intestinal nematode infections in Nanjing City from 2006 to 2015]

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the epidemiological situation of human intestinal nematode infections in Nanjing City from 2006 to 2015, so as to provide the reference for formulating prevention and control measures.

METHODS

The surveillance data of human intestinal nematode infections in Nanjing City from 2006 to 2015 were collected and analyzed statistically.

RESULTS

From 2006 to 2015, 98 804 person-times of residents were surveyed in Nanjing City, and 465 person-times of residents were detected with intestinal nematode infections. The highest infection rate was in 2006 (1.97%), and the lowest in 2013 and 2015 (both 0.05%). Moreover, the positive rate of human intestinal nematode infections showed a significantly declining trend in total ( χ² = 552.19, P < 0.001). Meanwhile, the numbers of Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm and Trichuris trichura cases were 329, 98 and 25 respectively, and the infection rates were 0.33%, 0.10% and 0.03% respectively. Among them, 443 cases had mild infection intensity (98.66%). There were 462 cases of single-infection (99.35%), and 3 of co-infection of two parasites (0.65%). From 2006 to 2015, 92 539 person-times of children under 12 years old were surveyed for Enterobius vermicularis infection and 352 cases were detected with E. vermicularis infection. Moreover, the positive rate showed a significantly decreasing trend in total (χ² = 147.94, P <0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The control effect of human intestinal nematode infections in Nanjing City is remarkable. However, the surveillance and health education in key groups still should be strengthened, and the prevention and control programs should be adjusted promptly to further consolidating the effectiveness of intestinal nematode disease prevention and control.

Soil transmitted helminthiasis in different occupational groups in Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan

We investigated the prevalence of geohelminth parasites in farmers, education concerned and shepherd of Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. A total of 1041 stool samples were examined from January 2006 to December 2008 using direct smear (Normal saline and Lugol's Iodine solution) the concentration methods and procedures. Seven hundred and sixty three (73.2%) individuals were found infected with one or more than one geohelminth parasites. Four hundred and eighteen (54.7%) were infected with single parasite and three hundred forty five (45.3%) with multiple infections. Ascaris lumbricoides 460 (53.0%), Trichuris trichura 228 (26.2%), Enterobius vermicularis 123 (14.1%) and Ancylostoma duedenale 56 (6.45%) were detected. The adults were found more parasitized than children and males were more infected than females. Shepherds were found more infected than farmers and education concerned. Although Swat is an area with poor hygiene located in temperate zone near the border of Afghanistan and China. The prevalence of reported geohelminth parasites here compared with the same studies is unexpectedly high. These types of studies should continue time to time to know the hazardous of such parasitic infections for the betterment of the human health.

Worm infestations and development of autoimmunity in children - The ABIS study

Worm infestations influence the immune system and may therefore decrease the risk for autoimmune diseases. The aim of the study was to determine whether children who have developed autoimmune disease were less likely to have had worm infestations in childhood. The ABIS-study is a prospective population-based cohort study of children born in southeast Sweden 1997/99. 17.055 children participated. As of June 2014 116 individuals had developed Type 1 diabetes, 181 celiac disease, and 53 Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. The parents answered questions on worm infestations when the children were 1, 5 and 8 years of age. The ABIS registry was connected to the National Registry of Drug Prescriptions, and national registries for diagnosis of the studied diseases. We found no differences in incidence of worm infestations at 1, 5 or 8 years of age between children who developed autoimmune disease(s) or healthy controls. At 8 years in total 20.0% of the general child population had experienced a worm infestation; children who developed Type 1 diabetes, 21,3%, celiac disease 19,5% and JRA 18,8%. There was no difference in prescriptions of drugs for treatment of worm infestations between those who had and who had not developed Type 1 diabetes, celiac disease, Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. We found no associations indicating that worm infestations in childhood does not play a role in the development of autoimmune diseases in Sweden.

Intestinal parasites in stool samples and perianal swabs examined by The Voivodeship Sanitary-Epidemiological Station in Bydgoszcz between 2000-2014

INTRODUCTION

Epidemiological conditions are changing due to the modifications in human behavior and environment. Parasitic diseases are most often caused by intestinal parasites. The frequency of Echinococcus multilocularis and tropical diseases increases in Poland.

AIM OF STUDY

Analysis of intestinal parasites’ occurrence in stool samples and perianal swabs tested in Medical Diagnostics Department of The Voivodeship Sanitary-Epidemiological Station in Bydgoszcz between 2000-2014.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

24 609 fecal samples and perianal swabs were tested using microscopic method for intestinal parasites’ presence and immunoenzymatic method (ELISA) for Giardia intestinalis presence. The study population was sorted into four groups according to age.

RESULTS

Prevalence of intestinal parasites in persons tested over 2000-2014 period ranged between 2.15% - 7.04%. The most common invasive parasite was Enterobius vermicularis, especially among children between 3-7 years (64.58%). In the same time period the most prevalent pathogenic intestinal parasite in adults (>16 years) was Giardia intestinalis (65.81%).

CONCLUSIONS

1. The prevalence of intestinal parasites infection changes depending on the number of tests carried out. The number of infections may be underestimated given that the testing encompassed only a part of population. A need for more thorough examination exists. 2. Enterobius vermicularis infection was most often found in children between 3-7 years, mainly from specific communities (kindergartens, orphanages).

[Demographic and clinical features of diagnosed individuals of enterobiasis in the southern Gran Canaria: sampling assessment]

OBJECTIVE

Enterobius vermicularis, also known as pinworn, is the responsible agent for Human Enterobiasis. It is one of the most prevalent, but underrated, parasitic disease in children population. Diagnosis involves demonstration of either eggs or adult worms by Graham test. The aim of this study is to describe the clinical, demographic and microbiological features of patients with suspected diagnosis of Enterobiasis in southern Gran Canaria.

METHODS

Descriptive and prospective study of perianal samples evaluated by Graham test in the Microbiology Department of `Insular de Gran Canaria´ University Hospital between November 2014 and November 2015. Descriptive analysis to evaluate the correlation between clinical and demographic variables and the results of Graham test microbiological observation.

RESULTS

1,128 samples were analyzed. E. vermicularis was found in 11.4% of the samples. Among the positives samples, 88.4% belonged to children under 14 years, and 53.5% were male. Abdominal pain (18.6%), anal itching (11.6%), eosinophilia (8.5%) and intestinal parasitosis suspicion (7.8%) were the reasons of parasitological investigation request in positive samples. Nevertheless, a high proportion of the requests was not founded in a suspicious diagnosis or was unrelated to Enterobiasis.

CONCLUSIONS

Enterobiasis is a common disease in primary health care and is of great importance in Gran Canaria. Quality in sample collection as well as diagnosis suspicious information are necessary for a good microbiological analysis.

PREVALENCE AND ASSOCIATED RISK FACTORS OF INTESTINAL PARASITES IN HUMANS AND DOMESTIC ANIMALS ACROSS BORDERS OF THAILAND AND LAO PDR: FOCUS ON HOOKWORM AND THREADWORM

Hookworm and threadworm infections are major public health problems in developing countries. A cross sectional study comprising 843 participants (346 males and 497 females) was conducted in three populations: i) Thai residents (TR) of Ubon Ratchathani Province, Thailand; ii) Laotian immigrant workers (LI) in the same province; and iii) Laotian residents (LR) in Champasak Province, Lao PDR. Participants were interviewed based on a structured questionnaire regarding their health status. Stool samples from participants and 300 samples from domestic animals (277 dogs and 23 cats) living in the participants households were collected and examined for parasitic infection using a formalin-ether concentration and a Harada-Mori filter paper culture techniques. Approximately one-third of TR and LI populations and domestic animals in Thailand were positive for parasitic infections, while almost half of LR population and domestic animals were positive. We confirmed by PCR and DNA sequencing a case of Ancylostoma ceylanicum infection in a Thai man. We also observed infections of other parasites, such as Taenia spp and Opisthorchis viverrini. Multivariate analysis indicated that risk factors for hookworm infection were population group and walking barefoot. Factors associated with threadworm infection were population group, adult male, lack of previous antiparasitic treatment and of knowledge of parasitic infection, and failure to wash hands after contact with domestic animals. Our results highlight the high prevalence of both hookworm and threadworm infections especially among LI population and domestic animals in both countries. Our findings emphasize the need for public health intervention to control the spread of parasitic infections in Thailand and Lao PDR.

[Effect of control program of human intestinal parasitic diseases in Nanping City]

OBJECTIVE

To understand the epidemic status of human intestinal parasitic diseases and evaluate the effect of the control program in Nanping City, so as to provide an evidence for improving the disease control.

METHODS

The villages were selected by the stratified cluster sampling method and the residents in these villages were surveyed for human intestinal parasitic diseases, and kindergartens were also selected and the children in these kindergartens were surveyed for Enterobius vermicularis infection.

RESULTS

In 2007, before the control program, 9 851 residents of Nanping City were surveyed, with the parasitic infection rate of 9.10% (896 infection cases), and the infection rate of E. vermicularis of children was 18.56% (328/1 767). From 2011 to 2014, when the control program was performed, 4 679 residents were surveyed, with the infection rate of 4.06% (190 infection cases), and the infection rate of E. vermicularis of children was 3.87% (33/853). After the control program was launched, the infection rates of human intestinal parasites were decreased. The overall parasitic infection rate and hookworm infection rate showed increasing trends by age (χ² = 49.03 and 53.58 respectively, both P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

The infection situation of human intestinal parasites is decreased after the implementation of the control program but the infection rate is still at a high level, and the control work should be strengthened.

Transmission of Enterobius vermicularis eggs through hands of school children in rural South Africa

Enterobius vermicularis is a helminth that is difficult to control, is found globally, especially in crowded conditions, and can be transmitted from person to person by contaminated hands. A newly developed method for the quantification of helminth eggs on hands was tested among schoolchildren in a rural South African region to look at the role hands play in helminth infection, and to determine the risk factors for hand contamination. The study found 16.6% of participants' hands positive for helminth eggs, with E. vermicularis most commonly identified. Egg concentrations on hands ranged from 0 to 57 eggs/2 hands. Gender, toilet type used at home, and not reporting to wash hands with soap before eating were all associated with the presence of eggs on hands. The study highlights the need to improve sanitation facilities, and promote handwashing with soap in schools to prevent transmission of E. vermicularis.

PREDICTORS OF INTESTINAL HELMINTHIC INFECTIONS AMONG SCHOOL CHILDREN IN GWAGWALADA, ABUJA, NIGERIA

BACKGROUND

Prevalence and risk factors predisposing to intestinal helminthic infections vary widely. Risk factors to intestinal helminthic infections among children have not been documented in Gwagwalada, Nigeria which necessitated present study.

OBJECTIVE

To determine risk factors to intestinal helminthiasis among children aged 1-15 years in Gwagwalada, Nigeria.

METHODS

Cross-sectional study was carried out from June to November, 2011 in public schools using multi-staged, random sampling. Risk factors and helminth species were determined. Multiple stool samples were analyzed using the Kato-Katz technique. Participants had a single anal swab to search for Enterobius ova.

RESULTS

Of 220 subjects evaluated, prevalence rate of intestinal helminthic infections was 73.2%. Most common helminth identified was Ascaris lumbricoides (40.9%) and least was Trichostrongylus species (2.3%). Logistic regression analysis showed that significant, predictors of intestinal helminthiasis among subjects were female gender (P = 0.028), lack of hand washing after defecation (P < 0.01), multiple sources of drinking water (P = 0.011) and eating of unwashed fruits/vegetables (P = 0.012).

CONCLUSION

The present study identified predictors of intestinal helminthiasis among children Gwagwalada. Efforts should be made to institute regular health education, provision of potable water, environmental sanitation and de-worming programmes for children, as ways of reducing burden of the infections.

The Frequency of Enterobius Vermicularis Infections in Patients Diagnosed With Acute Appendicitis in Pakistan

INTRODUCTION

The main aim of this study was to determine the frequency of Enterobius vermicularis infections and other unique histopathological findings in patients diagnosed with acute appendicitis.

MATERIALS

This retrospective study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital of Karachi, Pakistan over a time period of 9 years from 2005 to 2013. The recorded demographic and histopathological data for the 2956 appendectomies performed during this time frame were extracted using a structured template form. Negative and incidental appendectomies were excluded from the study.

RESULTS

Out of the 2956 patients diagnosed with acute appendicitis, 84 (2.8%) patients had Enterobius vermicularis infections. Malignancy (n=2, 0.1%) and infection with Ascaris (n=1, 0.1%) was found very rarely among the patients.Eggs in lumen (n=22, 0.7%), mucinous cystadenoma (n=28, 1.0%), mucocele (n=11, 0.4%), lymphoma (n=9, 0.3%), obstruction in lumen (n=17, 0.6%) and purulent exudate (n=37, 1.3%) were also seldom seen in the histopathological reports.

CONCLUSION

Enterobius vermicularis manifestation is a rare overall but a leading parasitic cause of appendicitis. Steps such as early diagnosis and regular de worming may help eradicate the need for surgeries.

[Prevalence and risk factors of Enterobius vermicularis among preschool children in kindergartens in Luohu District, Shenzhen City]

OBJECTIVE

To understand the prevalence and risk factors of Enterobius vermicularis among preschool children in kindergartens in Luohu District, Shenzhen City.

METHODS

A total of 489 children in 6 kindergartens were selected by the stratified sampling method and investigated for E. vermicularis infection by the cellophane anal swab technique. The information of sanitary condition of the kindergartens, personal hygiene, and family hygiene were investigated by questionnaire.

RESULTS

The infection rate of E. vermicularis was 10.2% (50/489). The single factor analysis indicated that the following factors might related to the infection: the different classes of kindergartens, grades, ground of bed ioom, private toilet, types of taps and beds, bed management, education levels of parents, frequency of shower and washing anus, and washing hands before meal and after WC. The multivariate Logistic analysis indicated that the bed management, education level of mothers, frequency of washing anus, and private toilet were independent risk factors for E. vermicularis infection.

CONCLUSION

To control the infection of E. vermicularis, the circumstance and management of kindergartens, parents' knowledge of E. vernicularis infection, and children's healthy habit need improve.

The prevalence of intestinal parasites in children in preschools and orphanages in the Warmia-Masuria province (North-Eastern Poland)

OBJECTIVE

A comparison of the prevalence of intestinal parasites (IP) in preschoolers and orphans in the Warmia-Masuria province (Poland).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Between 2003-2006 fecal samples and perianal swabs from 1052 preschoolers and 859 orphans were tested on the basis of direct saline and iodine mount, decantation test and the adhesive cellophane tape method.

RESULTS

10.8% of preschoolers and 46,3% of orphans were infected with IP. Among the six detected IP species the E. vermicularis was the most common. Infections of E. vermicularis were diagnosed in 9.5% of preschoolers and 36,7% of orphans. There were statistically significant differences in the distribution of IP between males and females in preschools. IP infections were the most frequent among 7-year-old children, 19.1% in preschools and 65.7% in orphanages, respectively. In preschools, the prevalence of IP was higher among preschoolers from the rural area (17.3%) than from the urban area (10.3%).

CONCLUSION

Orphans and children from rural areas, especially at the age of 7, should be covered by systematic screening with parasitic tests throughout all of Poland. In this group of children, enterobiasis is the main health problem. The promotion of the awareness of IP infections and their prevention among parents and educational staff is required.

Effect of a one-off educational session about enterobiasis on knowledge, preventative practices, and infection rates among schoolchildren in South Korea

Although health education has proven to be cost-effective in slowing the spread of enterobiasis, assessments of the effectiveness of health education to reduce infectious diseases specifically in children are rare. To evaluate the effect of health education on knowledge, preventative practices, and the prevalence of enterobiasis, 319 children from 16 classes were divided into experimental and control groups. Data were collected from May 2012 to March 2013. A 40-minute in-class talk was given once in the experimental group. There were significant differences over the time in the mean scores for children's knowledge of Enterobius vermicularis infection in the intervention group compared to the control group (p<0.001). After the educational session, the score for knowledge about E. vermicularis infection increased from 60.2 ± 2.32 to 92.7 ± 1.19 in the experimental group; this gain was partially lost 3 months later, decreasing to 83.6 ± 1.77 (p<0.001). Children's enterobiasis infection prevention practice scores also increased, from 3.23 ± 0.27 to 3.73 ± 0.25, 1 week after the educational session, a gain that was partially lost at 3 months, decreasing to 3.46 ± 0.36 (p<0.001). The overall E. vermicularis egg detection rate was 4.4%; the rates for each school ranged from 0% to 12.9% at screening. The infection rate at 3 months after the treatment sharply decreased from 12.3% to 0.8% in the experimental group, compared to a decrease from 8.5% to 3.7% in the control group during the same period. We recommend that health education on enterobiasis be provided to children to increase their knowledge about enterobiasis and improve prevention practices.

[Survey of intestinal parasitic infections and related knowledge and behavior of residents in Jiaodong area of Shandong Province]

OBJECTIVE

To understand the status of intestinal parasitic infections and the related knowledge and behavior in residents of Jiaodong area of Shandong Province, so as to provide the evidence for making an appropriate preventive and control strategy.

METHODS

A total of 18 villages from 6 counties in Jiaodong area were selected as investigation sites according to the stratified sampling method. The feces samples of the permanent residents aged above 3 years were collected and examined by Kato-Katz technique to find the intestinal parasite eggs, and the children under 12 years old were examined by the method of cellophane anal swab to detect the Enterobius vennrmicularis eggs. In addition, 50 households in each survey sites were randomly selected to investigate the basic family situation and the condition of awareness on prevention knowledge and formation of correct behavior of residents by using a structured questionnaire.

RESULTS

Totally 6 163 residents involved in the feces examinations, and the total infection rate of intestinal parasites was 6.91%. The infection rates of Trichuris trichiura, Ascaris lumbricoides and hookworm were 6.56%, 0.62% and 0.21%, respectively. The infection rate of E. vermicularis in children under 12 years old was 0.51%. The eggs of Clonorchis sinensis and Taenia solium were not found in this survey. The awareness rate of knowledge about preventing parasitic diseases was 49.54%. The formation rates of washing hands before eating, washing hands after using the toilet, never eating raw fruit and vegetable without washing clean, never working in the field with bare feet, and never drinking unboiled water were 97.78%, 91.95%, 88.81%, 92.42% and 86.48% respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

The infection rate of intestinal parasites is low in Jiaodong area, but there is a significant difference among different counties. The awareness rate of knowledge about preventing parasitic diseases is low, but the formation rate of healthy behavior is high. In the future, the health education and the strategy of taking medicine among the key population should be enhanced, and the project of reconstructing safe water supply and lavatory should be advanced.

[Monitoring of Enterobius vermicularis infection among children from 2006 to 2010 and SWOT analysis]

OBJECTIVE

To understand the infection status and variation tendeNcy of Enterobius vermicularis infection among children at national monitoring spots of soil-transmitted nematodosis from 2006 to 2010, and master the epidemic regularity, so as to provide the evidence for making control strategy and evaluating the control effect.

METHODS

A total of 22 national monitoring spots of soil-transmitted nematodosis were established according to the National Surveillance Program of Soil-Transmitted Nematodiasis (Trial), and the children aged 3-12 years were examined through adhesive cellophane anal swabs, thenthe infection rates of children with different ages, genders, nationalities and education levels were analyzed. In addition, the advantage, disadvantage, opportunity and threat of the monitoring work were analyzed by SWOT analysis. Results: A total of 17 068 children were examined in 22 monitoring spots from 2006 to 2010, and 1 363 of them were found being infected with E. vermnicularis, the average infection-rate was 7.99%, and the infection rates of male and female children were 7.39% and 8.70%, respectivel; the average infection rates in each year were 10.01%, 9.68%, 7.41%, 6.96% and 6.57%, respectively. From 2006 to 2009, the infection rates of E. vermicularis in children in Fujian Province was the highest, which were 56.15%, 53.42%, 37.82% and 49.53%, respectively, but in 2010, the infection rate in Guangdong Province (46.06%) was the highest. The fur- ther analysis demonstrated that the female children, 3-6 age group, Li nationality and children at kindergarten stage had relatively high infection rates. The SWOT analysis showed that the advantage of E. vermicularis monitoring in China was its wide coverage and continuity, and the disadvantage was the relatively small investment from the government, the opportunity was that the national monitoring Spot could drive the monitoring work at the provincial, county and other levels, and the threat was that the work was paid less and less attention to in recent years.

CONCLUSION

Though the infection rate of E. vermicularis in children at national monitoring spots of soil-transmitted nematodosis has been decreased year by year, high-endemic areas still exist, and thus the work on enterobiasis control and prevention still needs to be strengthened.

[Parasitological monitoring as part of epidemiological surveillance of helminthiasis in the Russian Federation]

The paper presents data on the prevalence of helminthiasis in Russia on the basis of the State Reports on the sanitary and epidemiological situation in the Russian Federation. It comparatively characterizes morbidity rates in 2010-2012. Morbidity analysis has revealed the main reasons for the prevalence of parasitic diseases and the possible ways of their elimination.

[Survey of distribution of Enterobius vermicularis infection of children in Huadu District, Guangzhou City]

OBJECTIVE

To understand the status of Enterobius vermicularis infection of children in Huadu District, Guangzhou City so as to provide the evidence for improving the control work.

METHODS

In 2012, 24 kindergartens and 24 primary schools were selected as survey sites by the stratified random sampling method and 200 or more children aged below 10 years per site were investigated for the Enterobius vermicularis infection by the cellophane tape method. The relevant influencing factors (environment conditions, sanitary facilities and management system, and health habits of families and individuals) were surveyed with questionnaire, and all the data were analyzed statistically with the Excel software.

RESULTS

From September to December, 2012, totally 9 777 children were investigated and 760 ones were detected with Enterobius vermicularis infection (7.77%). With a school as the unit, the highest infection rate reached to 33.82% (69/204). The infection rate in urban areas was 4.63% (195/ 4 213), and the rate in villages was 10.15% (760/5 546) ( chi2 =102.126, P <0.01). The infection rate of preschool children was 3.51% (1 70/4 840) and the rate of school children was 11.95% (590/4 973), and the latter was much higher than the former (chi2 =242.732, P < 0.01). The infection rates of the male and the female were 7.44% (412/5 537) and 8.21% (348/4, 240) respectively ( chi2 = 1.969, P > 0.05). The survey of relevant influencing factors showed that the conditions of the kindergartens were better than those in the primary schools, and the conditions in the urban areas were better than those in the villages.

CONCLUSIONS

The Enterobius vermicularis infection of children in Huadu District is high. The control key points should be put on the schools with poor sanitary facilities and environment conditions in villages and urban areas.

[Investigation of pinworm infection among kindergarten children in Jurong City, Jiangsu Province]

In order to understand pinworm infection of kindergarten children in Jurong City, Jiangsu Province, a total of 1 088 children were sampled for the survey from September 2011 to October 2012. The cellophane tape swab technique was used to examine pinworm eggs. The infection rate of pinworm was 1.1% (12/1 088). The rate in boys and girls was 1.3% (7/551) and 0.9% (5/537), respectively. Higher infection rate was in the senior class (1.4%, 5/370), and no significant difference was found with gender, as well as among different classes (P > 0.05). Evidently, pinworm prevalence is at a low level in the kindergarten children of Jurong.

[Enterobius vermicularis infection status among children in 9 provinces/autonomous regions/municipalities of China]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the infection status of Enterobius vermicularis among children in 9 Provinces/Autonomous regions/Municipalities (P/A/M) of China, and analyze its risk factors.

METHOD

From April to December 2011, one provincial capital (prefecture-level city) and one county (city, district) were chosen as investigation spots from Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Chongqing, Sichuan, Zhejiang, Fujian, Anhui and Guizhou, respectively. Children aged 2 to 12 were examined by using adhesive cellophane anal swab with round-bottom tube. Information of children's family condition, health behavior and school environment were collected by questionnairing.

RESULTS

14 964 children were examined, and 14 582 qualified questionnaires were collected. The total prevalence was 17.8% (2 659/14 964). Of the 9 P/A/M, the prevalence was highest in Hainan Province (51.1%, 869/1 701) and lowest in Anhui Province (0.8%, 13/1 589). The prevalence in urban areas (7.3%, 552/7 581) was lower than that of rural areas (28.5%, 2 107/7 383) (chi2 = 1156.73, P < 0.01). The highest prevalence in urban and rural areas was found in Haikou City(38.0%, 322/847) and Wanning City (64.1%, 547/854) of Hainan Province. The prevalence rate in males and females was 17.4% (1 410/8 128) and 18.3% (1249/6 834), respectively (chi2 = 2.192, P > 0.05). The highest prevalence in males (61.2%, 300/490) and females (67.9%, 247/364) was found in children of Wanning City. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that residence, education level of parents, occupation of parents, nail biting, types of classroom ground and type of boarding were the risk factors on E. vermicularis infection.

CONCLUSION

The prevalence of enterobiasis in children is still high in many areas of China, and the prevention and control measures should be taken according to the risk factors.

[Investigation on pinworm infection and relative factors on prevalence among urban and rural preschool children in Xianyang City]

A total of Eight hundred eighty-six children from 3 to 7 years old in 8 kindergartens were sampled in urban and rural area in Xianyang City from March to May 2012. The cellophane tape swab technique was used to examine pinworm eggs. Children's hygiene habits, clinical symptoms and hygienic condition were surveyed by questionnairing. The total infection rate of pinworm was 11.2% (99/886). The rate in males and females was 10.4% (52/500) and 12.2% (47/386), respectively. The infection rate in rural kindergartens (19.1%, 70/367) was higher than that of urban kindergartens (5.6%, 29/519) (chi2 = 39.39, P < 0.01). Among the investigated children aged 3-7 years, the infection rate in 4-5 years group (12.7%) was the highest, but no statistical difference was found among age groups (P> 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the hygiene habits such as washing hands before eating (OR = 0.180), drinking unboiled water and eating non-cooked food (OR = 2.473), cleaning perianal region frequently (OR = 0.836), cutting nails frequently (OR = 0.450), drying the quilt regularly (OR = 0.224) and health education (OR = 0.639) were the influence factors on pinworm infection. The main symptoms of pinworm infection include pruritus and bruxism.

[Nematodes of humans in the Primorye Territory]

Nematodes occupy the top in the general pattern of human parasitic diseases in the Primorye Territory. In the south of the Far East, there are a total of 28 nematode species that can parasitize man. However, the authors have identified only 8 nematode-induced diseases, such as ascariasis, enterobiasis, toxocariasis, trichocephaliasis, anisakiasis, trichinosis, dirofilariasis, dioctophymosis. The latter has been found only once in the 1920s. According to official statistical data, the proportion of ascariasis and enterobiasis accounted for 43.8 and 53.5% of the total number of helminthiases, respectively.

The dynamics of spreading bacterial diseases and ilnesses caused by helminthosis in Adjara Autonomous Republic 2011

According to the data of past few years it has been determined that the general incidence and the prevalence of the bacterial and helminthosis diseases have increased. Epidemic Supervision has registered a slight increase of such diseases in data of 2011. Taking into consideration this fact, this research is quite important for the region of Adjara. The aim of our research is to study the dynamics of spreading some bacterial and helminthosis diseases in Adjara Autonomous Republic. In particular, the diseases caused by different bacterias of leptospira family - leptospirosis and illnesses caused by helminthosis - ascariasis, enterobiasis and trichocephalosis. according to the reseaches held it has been determined that there have been several cases of leptospirosis registered in Adjara. Specifically, 10 cases in 2008, 6 in 2009, 30 in 2010 and 31 cases in 2011 out of which 10 of the cases where laboratorily claimed. There were cases of ascariasis, enterobiasis and trichocephalosis. According to data, there are 5 times less cases of trichocephalosis than of ascariasis. As for enterobiasis, it's less than ascariasis (the difference is 205 cases). In therms of the aging, all the cases occur more frequently in the group of children below the age of 14.

[Survey on pinworm infection and egg contamination among urban, suburban and rural pupils in Shangqiu City]

Seven hundred and ninety-eight preschool children and grade one pupils from three schools in the city of Shangqiu were sampled randomly in urban, suburban and rural areas. The transparent tape method was used to examine the infection of pinworm and the contamination of pinworm eggs on the environments. The average infection rate of pinworm was 9.9% (79/798). The prevalence of pinworm infection among the pupils of urban(4.6%) was statistically lower than those of suburban (11.2%) and rural (13.8%) (P < 0.01). The contamination rate of pinworm eggs from armor, fingers, bedclothes, briefs,and stationery in infected pupils are 23.8% (5/21), 18.0% (9/50), 15.8% (3/19), 12.9% (4/31) and 5.0% (2/40), respectively, which showed no statistical significance (P > 0.05).

[Prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis infection of children and its influencing factors in Chongqing City]

OBJECTIVE

To understand the infection status of Enterobius vermicularis of children aged 3-12 years and its influencing factors in Chongqing City.

METHODS

One rural county and 1 urban county were selected as investigation areas. The children aged 3-12 years of 5 towns from 5 different directions of each county were investigated. About 150 children were investigated every town. The Enterobius vermicularis eggs of children were detected by the adhesive cellophane anal swab method. The children's parent education levels and personal circumstances of sanitation were investigated by the questionnaire survey.

RESULTS

Among 1 592 children investigated, the total infection rate of Enterobius vermicularis was 6.85%. The infection rates of boys and girls were 6.29% and 7.40%, respectively. The infection rates of rural and urban areas were 12.13% and 2.14%, respectively. The infection rate in children aged 5-7 years was the highest (13.56%) among all the child aged groups. There were significant differences for the infection rates of Enterobius vermicularis among children of different aged groups, different areas, different education levels and occupations of parents, washing hand before meal or not, washing hand after WC or not, different classroom grounds, and lodging or not (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05). The multivariate logistic analysis indicated that aged group, different areas, classroom ground and lodging children were independent risk factors for Enterobius vermicularis infection.

CONCLUSIONS

The infection rate of Enterobius vermicularis in rural area is higher than that in urban area. The control emphases should be the children of low group, rural area, poor classroom and lodging.

[Influence factors of Enterobius vermicularis infection among pupils in Chongqing City]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate Enterobius vermicularis infection among primary school students and its influence factors in Chongqing.

METHODS

Beibei and Changshou were selected as investigated points from October to December 2011. One primary school was randomly chosen from each of the 5 different directions in every investigated point. Adhesive cellophane anal swab was used to examine pinworm eggs for 3 consecutive days. Information on children's family, hygiene habits and school environment was collected by questionnaire.

RESULTS

The total infection rate of E. vermicularis was 6.7% (71/1 071). The infection rate in rural schools (7.9%, 60/755) was higher than that of urban schools (3.8%, 12/316) (chi2 = 6.1169, P < 0.05). The rate in males and females was 6.3% (34/536) and 7.1% (38/535), respectively (chi2 = 0.2463, P > 0.05). Among the investigated children aged 6-12 years, the infection rate in 6-year-old children (16.03%) was highest. There was a statistical significance among age groups (chi2 = 29.1492, P < 0.01). With the increase of age, the rate decreased. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that location (OR = 0.411), age groups (OR = 0.714), education level of mothers (OR = 0.568), materials of classroom-ground (OR = 0.116) and types of boarding (OR = 0.272) were the influence factors on E. vermicularis infection in primary schools (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Pinworm control should more focused on rural children, younger group, mothers with lower education, classroom with cement ground and lodging schools in Chongqing City.

[Advances in research on harm and control of Enterobius vermicularis infection in children]

In China, the infection rate of Enterobius vermicularis in children is still relatively high. Because the development and spread of worm eggs is fast, it is easy to treat but difficult to control the disease, and the control effect is also difficult to be consolidated. The long-term repeated Enterobius vermicularis infection may cause the damage on children's body and mind in different degrees. This paper offers an overview on the current status, harm and prevention and control of Enterobius vermicularis infection.

[Investigation of pinworm infection among Kindergarten children in Ninghai County]

6,257 children in 39 kindergartens were examined by adhesive tape wiping in the morning during April, 2009 to November, 2010, and 460 children were found pinworm infected with a prevalence of 7.4% (460/6,257), 7.7% (260/3,359) in girls and 6.9% (200/2,898) in boys. Children in junior class had lowest infection rate of 4.6% (77/1,667), while children in senior class had highest rate of 9.7% (252/2,594) (chi2 = 36.8, P < 0.01). Furthermore, the rate in public kindergartens (6.5%, 255/3,927) was lower than that in private kindergartens (8.8%, 255/2,330) (chi2 = 11.4, P < 0.01) , and the rate in urban kindergartens (12.4%, 199/1,611) was much higher than that in rural kindergartens (5.6%, 261/4,646) (chi2 = 79.7, P < 0.01) . Evidently, pinworm prevalence is high in children in Ninghai, and it is higher in private and urban kindergartens than in public and rural ones respectively.

Parasitological stool examination from children without the typical symptoms of parasitic disease

Most parasitic intestinal infestations in humans are sub-clinical and, therefore, they are rarely diagnosed. A number of general, non-specific symptoms of parasitic invasions are often attributed to other diseases. A parasitological examination of feces performed as part of this study confirmed the presence of intestinal parasites in 21.6% of samples. Among the patients who reported 6 different symptoms, the percentage of parasite-positive samples reached 80%. The obtained results suggest that coproscopic tests may establish the diagnosis in unclear cases, particularly in children. Many parasitic invasions are zoonoses and pets owe a reservoir. In view of the above, the results for pet owners and non-pet owners were compared in the study. There was no direct correlation between pet ownership and the incidence of parasitic infections.

[Atopic diseases and intestinal helminth infections]

The purpose of the current study was to examine the relationship between past and current intestinal helminth infections, and asthma, allergic rhino-conjunctivitis, and atopic dermatitis.

MATERIAL AND METHOD

The study was performed on 84 patients aged 2-18 years with a mean of 9.31 +/- 3.75 years. Helminth infection was determined by stool examinations and questionnaire. Asthma was diagnosed by spirometry, atopic dermatitis and allergic rhino-conjunctivitis by skin prick testing.

RESULTS

Stool examinations revealed infection with A. lumbricoides in 5.95% of cases and E. vermicularis in 4.76% of cases. 8 patients had positive tests for at least a helminth. The most frequent respiratory symptoms were caught, wheezing and dispneea. Spirometry showed anormal results in 4.76% of patients and skin tests were positive in 20.24% of cases. 11 patients were diagnosed with allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and 5 with atopic dermatitis. A history of infection with E. vermicularis was associated with increased risk of atopic dermatitis (OR 1.86), asthma (OR 2.11), and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (OR 1.34), and a positive stool examination for A. lumbricoides was negatively associated with asthma (OR 2.60).

CONCLUSIONS

Current A. lumbricoides infection protects against asthma while past infection with E. vermicularis are risk factors for allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, asthma and atopic dermatitis. Interactions depend on the type of helminth and time of infestation.

Prevalence and risk factors for pinworm infection in the kindergarten of Thammasat University, Thailand

We studied the prevalence and risk factors for pinworm infection in children attending the kindergarten of Thammasat University, Pathum Thani, Thailand, using the Scotch-tape technique. Slides were examined by a standard light microscope; 20% of negative slides were reexamined for quality control. Symptoms and risk factor data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Three hundred thirty children age 3 to 6 years old were sampled (males=159). Sixty-five (19.7%) had symptoms consistent with pinworm infection. No pinworm eggs were detected. Most parents (73%) had a good socioeconomic status and 64% were university graduates. Pinworm infection may be uncommon in urban Thailand.

[The distribution of intestinal parasites detected in The Dokuz Eylul University Medical Faculty Hospital between 2005 and 2008.]

A retrospective evaluation of the data from 14,246 patients with gastrointestinal complaints who presented at the parasitology laboratory of the Dokuz Eylul University Medical Faculty Hospital between January 2005 and December 2008 was carried out. Fecal samples of all patients were examined using native-Lugol and the trichrome and Kinyoun acid-fast staining method after sedimentation in fecal concentration tubes. One or more parasites were detected in 1320 (9.3%) of the patients. The distribution of the intestinal parasites was as follows: Blastocystis hominis, 689 (4.83%); nonpathogenic amoebas, 108 (21.82%); Giardia intestinalis, 320 (2.24%); Enterobius vermicularis, 23 (0.16%); Entamoeba histolytica/Entamoeba dispar, 34 (0.24%); and other rare parasites, 78 (0.54%). The results of this study emphasize the fact that intestinal parasitic infections are still an important public health problem.

Current status of Enterobius vermicularis infection in primary schoolchildren in Miaoli County and Taichung County, Taiwan

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

No epidemiological survey of the prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis infection in Miaoli County and Taichung County has been conducted. This epidemiological survey was performed to describe the profile of E. vermicularis infection in schoolchildren in Miaoli County and Taichung County.

METHODS

The first part of this study was conducted between November 2005 and February 2006 in Miaoli County. 44,071 primary schoolchildren from 18 districts were examined by 2 consecutive-day adhesive cellophane perianal swabs to estimate the infection rate. The second part was performed between October 2006 and January 2007 in Taichung County. 24,382 primary schoolchildren from 14 districts were examined.

RESULTS

In Miaoli County, the infection rate was 2.39% (1054/44,071). The infection rate was highest in the Taian (6.69%; 20/299), Shytarn (4.49%; 11/245), and Dahu townships (3.6%; 40/1111). In Taichung County, the infection rate was 2.95% (720/24,382). The infection rate was highest in the Da-an (5.46%; 26/476) and Heping townships (4.48%; 9/201). The infection rate for a family with > or =3 children was significantly higher than that for a family with < or =2 children (p = 0.007). The frequency of washing linen and cleaning bedclothes significantly affected the infection rate of enterobiasis (p < 0.01). The efficacy rate for mebendazole was 96%, with no difference between 1 and 2 doses.

CONCLUSIONS

The number of children per family and the frequency of washing linen and cleaning bedclothes were the most important factors for transmission of pinworm infection among the groups surveyed.

[The distribution of intestinal parasites in children living in orphanages in Hatay, Turkey]

Intestinal parasites are an important public health problem in our country as in the rest of the world. Parasitic infection frequencies are related to the socioeconomic status and environmental factors. The aim of this study was to determine the parasite frequency in children in the 0-7 age group in the Hatay Society for the Protection of Children and in teenagers in the 7-17 age group in the Hatay Orphanage for boys and girls. One hundred and seventy seven children were examined for intestinal parasites. One or more intestinal parasites were found in 87 (49.2%) stool samples. The number and distribution of these parasites in the specimens is as follows: 57 (32.2%) Enterobius vermicularis, 14 (7.9%) Giardia intestinalis, 11 (6.2%) Ascaris lumbricoides, and 5 (2.8%) Taenia saginata.

[The distribution of intestinal parasites among children in Denizli]

Intestinal parasitic disease appears to be an important national health problem in our country. Parasitic infection distribution is related to the socioeconomic status and environmental factors. The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of intestinal parasites among children in the 1-15 age group in the Denizli province. Parasitic infection was observed in 256 (10.2%) out of 2518 children. The highest rate of 31.4% was that of Giardia intestinalis. The rates of Enterobius vermicularis and Blastocystis hominis were found to be 29.6% and 14% respectively.

Enterobiosis in Sivas, Turkey from past to present, effects on primary school children and potential risk factors

The prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis and potential risk factors was investigated in 2,230 pupils in Sivas between November 2006 and June 2008. A total of ten primary schools in different regions (4 located in City center, 4 in districts and 2 in villages) were classified as Region 1, Region 2 and Region 3, respectively and children completed a questionnaire about the potential risk factors. The overall egg positivity rate for E. vermicularis was 8.2% in Region 1, and the prevalence in the other regions was 7.0% and 14.8%, respectively. Children, aged 10-14 years, didn't show a significantly higher egg positivity rate than younger children (chi(2): 0.10, p > 0.05) and the infection rate for boys was not statistically different than girls (chi(2):0.40, p > 0.05). The socio-economic status of the family and personal hygiene were found to be associated with enterobiosis, (chi(2):30.83, p < 0.05). Furthermore, it was found that there was a statistically important relation between parasite occurrence and school success (chi(2):39.52, p < 0.05).But there is no difference between the parasitic and non-parasitic groups in terms of weight and height (t: 1.75, p > 0.05, t: 1.43, p > 0.05; respectively). The frequency of enterobiosis is obviously decreased in our region when the previous studies are considered.
