Abstract
The paper gives the results of experimental studies determining the preservation of antibodies to C.cellulosae in the serum in relation to the period of their storage during deep freezing. These studies, as applied to parasitic pathology, have been conducted for the first time and are of practical medical value in determining optimal procedures and periods of serum storage without a loss of their diagnostic characteristics.

Abstract
A combined (human and porcine) mass chemotherapy program was tested in a controlled design in 12 village hamlets in the Peruvian highlands. A single dose of 5 mg of praziquantel was given to eliminate intestinal taeniasis in humans, and two rounds of oxfendazole (30 mg/kg) were administered to all pigs. The total population in the study villages was 5,658 resident individuals, and the porcine population at the beginning of the study was 716 pigs. Human treatment coverage was 75%, ranging from 69% to 80%. There were only a few refusals of owners for porcine treatment of their animals. The effect of the intervention was measured by comparing incidence rates (seroconversion in pigs who were seronegative 4 months before) in treatment versus control villages, before and up to 18 months after treatment. There was a clear effect in decreasing prevalence (odds ratio, 0.51; P < 0.001) and incidence (odds ratio, 0.39; P < 0.013) in the treatment area after the intervention, which did not leave to extinction of the parasite but stabilized in slightly decreased rates persisting along the follow-up period. Mass chemotherapy was effective in decreasing infection pressure in this hyperendemic area. However, the magnitude of the effect was small and did not attain the goal of eliminating transmission.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the changes of level of the essential elements of copper, magnesium, and zinc status in cases of teniasis in children. Copper, magnesium, and zinc levels were measured in 40 children who were positive for intestinal parasite of Taenia saginata. Scores were obtained for the positives and their 30 age- and sex-matched T. saginata-negative healthy children. The mean concentration of copper, magnesium, and zinc in blood showed no statistically difference in T. saginata-positive children than in their controls both in females (p>0.05) and males (p>0.05). However, a clear numerically decrease was observed especially in magnesium and zinc levels compared to the controls both in females and males. The average magnesium concentration in T. saginata-positive female children and male children were 20+/-1.9 and 22+/-2.2 mg/L and it was 27+/-2.1 and 27+/-2.3 mg/L in controls, respectively. The mean values of the zinc in blood were 0.76+/-0.5 and 0.72+/-0.4 mg/L in T. saginata-positive female children and male children and 0.85+/-0.3 and 0.81+/-0.5 mg/L in female and male controls, respectively. No correlation could be demonstrated between age and mean values of copper, magnesium, and zinc in T. saginata-positive females and males and controls (p>0.05). No significant correlation could be found between blood copper, magnesium and zinc levels in T. saginata-positive female and male children and controls (p>0.05). Although there was no statistical correlation observed in copper, magnesium, and zinc levels between patients and controls, there seem to be, especially in magnesium and zinc levels, a decrease, whereas no change was seen in the zinc level in children infected with T. saginata compared to controls.

Abstract
The gold standard serodiagnostic assay for cysticercosis and neurocysticercosis, diseases caused by the metacestode of Taenia solium, uses lentil lectin-purified glycoprotein (LLGP) in a Western blot assay. We tested two antigens derived from LLGP, synthetic TS18var1 (sTS18var1) and recombinant GP50 antigen (rGP50), in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples. The sensitivity for serum and CSF was 94.7% and 100% for rGP50 and 90.4% and 90.2% for sTS18var1, respectively. The specificity for serum and CSF samples was 93.8% and 100% for rGP50 and 90.3% and 98.0% for sTS18var1, respectively. The use of these antigens individually or combined as a diagnostic antigen cocktail eliminates the need for purification of antigens from parasite material and offers the advantage of using a simple and quantitative ELISA format.

Abstract
Neurocysticercosis (NC), a parasitic disease caused by Taenia solium, may be either asymptomatic or have mild to severe symptoms due to several factors. In this study, the immunological factors that underlie NC pleomorphism were studied. Ten of the 132 inhabitants of a rural community in Mexico (Tepez) had a computerized tomography (CT) scan compatible with calcified NC, and all were asymptomatic. Their immunological profiles were compared with those of 122 CT scan negative (non-NC) subjects from the same village. NC was associated with a TH2 response (IgG4, IL-4, IL-5, IL-13). Subjects from Tepez had higher levels of specific antibodies (IgG1, IgG2, IgG4, IgE) and specific cell proliferation than subjects from an area with low exposure (Ensenada). This suggests that non-NC subjects from Tepez had been exposed to T. solium and resisted infection in the brain. Distinct immunological profiles in equally exposed individuals differing in outcome of infection support the hypothesis of host-related factors in resistance to and pathogenesis of NC. This is the first study reporting the immunological profile associated with the asymptomatic form of NC.

Abstract
Rats heavily infected with larval Taenia taeniaeformis show hyperplasia of the gastric mucosa accompanied by mucous cell proliferation, increase in the level of intragastric pH and hypergastrinemia. Sixty one rats were divided into 2 groups designed as infected (36 rats) and control (25 rats) group. These rats were examined with time course of the infection histopathologically and physiopathologically, during 14-112 days postinfection (DPI). In the infected rats, gastric mucosal hyperplasia began to be observed at 56 DPI, and the structural disturbance of zymogenic units in the corpus and mucous units in the antrum had increased with time. However, the degree of these changes in the antrum was weaker than those in the corpus. Alcianblue and/or PAS-positive cells increased in their numbers with time, and 4 types of cells other than typical surface mucous cell and mucous neck cell were observed by electron-microscopy. However, zymogenic and parietal cells decreased in their number after 56 DPI. Further, the infected rats showed changes in the serum concentration of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, blood urea nitrogen, glucose and total protein. Some similarities with Menetrier's disease were discussed.

Abstract
Taenia solium, a human cestode parasite endemic throughout most of South-east Asia, causes a number of public health and economic problems. The parasite is endemic in Bali due to a mix of cultural and religious practices. Immunoepidemiological investigation of three rural communities revealed a taeniasis prevalence of 0.72% (3/415). One of the three cases was due to Taenia solium, the other two to Taenia saginata. A further nine cases of Taenia infection were identified from patients from villages surrounding the chosen communities, suggesting that prevalence levels may be higher in other areas. Seroprevalence of human cysticercosis by immunoblot was 1.65% (6/363), though all cases were detected within a single community (6/115; prevalence 5.22%). Several other cases of subcutaneous cysticercosis were identified from local clinics, suggesting continued transmission of Taenia solium in the region. Other intestinal helminth parasites identified within the communities were Ascaris lumbricoides (29.9%), Trichuris trichiuria (33.9%) and hookworm (8.2%).

The participation of platelets in the protection against larval Taenia taeniaeformis was studied. CB-17 SCID mice, susceptible to T. taeniaeformis, were protected against a challenge infection with T. taeniaeformis by the passive transfer of platelets from T. taeniaeformis-infected normal CB-17 mice, resistant to T. taeniaeformis.

Abstract
Sera from patients infected with Taenia solium, Hymenolepis nana and Echinococcus granulosus were tested against homologous and heterologous parasite antigens using an ELISA assay, and a high degree of cross-reactivity was verified. To identify polypeptides responsible for this cross reactivity, the Enzyme Linked Immunoelectro Transfer Blot (EITB) was used. Sera from infected patients with T.solium, H.nana, and E.granulosus were assessed against crude, ammonium sulphate precipitated (TSASP), and lentil-lectin purified antigens of T.solium and crude antigens of H.nana and E.granulosus. Several bands, recognized by sera from patients with T.solium, H.nana, and E.granulosus infections, were common to either two or all three cestodes. Unique reactive bands in H.nana were noted at 49 and 66 K-Da and in E.granulosus at 17-21 K-Da and at 27-32 K-Da. In the crude cysticercosis extract, a specific non glycoprotein band was present at 61-67 K-Da in addiction to specific glycoprotein bands of 50, 42, 24, 21, 18, 14, and 13 K-Da. None of the sera from patients with H.nana or E.granulosus infection cross reacted with these seven glycoprotein bands considered specific for T.solium infection.

Abstract
This report examined the effects of larval tapeworm infection on the reproductive functions in both male and female host rats. Female rats were matched by age, then randomly assigned to control and treatment groups (infected with larval tapeworms). Estrous cycles were determined by vaginal smear with 95% of the control group exhibiting 4-day normal cyclicity and only 55% of the treated group exhibiting normal cycles. Female fertility was then evaluated for the normally cycling rats based on the percentage of successful matings on the evening of proestrus, number of implantation sites on Day 8 of pregnancy, and number of pups born at term. The normally cycling rats exhibited 96% successful mating, 12.95 +/- 1.80 implantation sites, and 11.20 +/- 1.80 pups born. Five months after larval tapeworm infection, the fertility parameters were decreased to 79%, 9.10 +/- 1.20, and 7.50 +/- 1.50, respectively. The control females were then used in a study of male fertility after larval tapeworm infection employing the same parameters used to test female fertility. At the onset of the study, control groups exhibited 95% successful mating, 12.50 +/- 1.50 implantation sites, and 11.60 +/- 1.60 pups born at full term. After the 5-month infection period, the parameters were substantially reduced to 29%, 6.20 +/- 0.80 implantation sites, and 5.10 +/- 0.80 pups, respectively. Average testosterone concentrations in serum and testis from control male rats were 8.80 +/- 0.95 ng/ml and 3.88 +/- 0.25 ng/mg protein, respectively. After the 5-month infection period, these levels were reduced to 2.47 +/- 0.31 ng/ml and 1.28 +/- 0.12 ng/mg protein, respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Calves were infected with 25,000 or 50,000 viable eggs of Taenia saginata. Larval numbers ranged between 2077 and 6005. During infection the animals developed leucocytosis, which was mainly due to lymphocytosis. An apparently positive correlation was observed between the lymphocytosis and the in vitro proliferative response of the lymphocytes to antigen prepared from proglottids. Maximal in vitro blast transformation of the cells stimulated with antigen occurred on Days 12 and 32 post-infection (p.i.). Specific antibodies to T. saginata were demonstrated on Day 14 p.i. At that time, the proliferative response of the cells paralleled the formation of specific antibodies, particularly of the IgG class. The stimulated cells produced a lymphokine showing interleukin 2 (IL 2)-like activity, since the addition of supernatant of such cells to IL 2-dependent concanavalin A (Con A)-blast cells supported the in vitro growth of the cells. In addition, peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) specific for T. saginata could be maintained in long-term cultures when they were cultured in medium containing supernatants of MLA-144 cell lines. The data presented in this study indicate that cells specific for T. saginata produced and consumed T cell growth factor (TCGF).

Abstract
Blood serotonin level, 5-HIAA in 24 h urine, serum immunoglobulins-IgG, IgM, IgA, percentage of lymphocytes T and B in rosette test were ascertained in 3 groups of patients with taeniosis, treated with Radeverm (32 patients), Praziquantel (22 patients) and Yomesan (10 patients). Primary hyperserotoninemia and higher level of 5-HIAA in post-treatment values were not uniformly differentiated. The same tendency was observed in post-treatment values of immunoglobulins and lymphocytes T and B as compared with values before treatment.

Abstract
The eosinophil has long been associated with diseases of acute hypersensitivity and with parasite infections, but its exact role in the pathogenesis of these conditions remains uncertain. Characterization of factors associated with migration of eosinophils into tissues has helped to elucidate eosinophil function. Eosinophil chemotactic factors associated with acute hypersensitivity reactions include the eosinophil chemotactic factors of anaphylaxis, histamine, and arachidonic acid metabolites, all of which are released from mast cells, and the lymphokine eosinophil stimulation promoter (ESP). Eosinophilotaxins associated with parasitic diseases include the lymphokine ESP and the low molecular weight factor ECF-G, both associated with schistosome infection in mice. In addition, in several parasite infections parasite-derived protein eosinophil chemotactic factors have been identified and characterized. The proteins associated with Ascaris, Anisakis, and Schistosoma infections appear to be distinct from one another. We have recently partially characterized a protein from Taenia taeniaeformis larvae which has marked chemotactic activity for eosinophils. In addition we have demonstrated eosinophil chemotactic activity associated with metabolism of arachidonic acid by T. taeniaeformis metacestodes. The results of studies in taeniasis and other parasite infections, therefore, indicate that parasite-derived factors may directly influence migration of eosinophils.

Abstract
Normal rats were given intravenous doses of either immune serum or immunoglobulin fractions 24 hr before oral challenge with 1,000 eggs of Taenia taeniaeformis. Total eosinophil counts per mm3 were performed for 3 days prior to and 6 days after challenge. Sensitized rats usually showed sharp peaks of eosinophilia 2 to 6 days after this dose. The pattern of the eosinophilic response was similar to that which occurs after challenge of immune infected rats. The differences in peripheral eosinophil levels in passively immunized and normal rats were statistically significant. Immunoglobulin fractions containing protective IgG2alpha were most effective, but a fraction containing reaginic antibody activity also sensitized rats to give secondary eosinophilic responses. The findings are discussed in relation to the probable contribution of antigen-antibody reactions to the production of secondary eosinophilic responses in experimental cysticercosis.

Abstract
Rats were dosed with eggs of Taenia taeniaeformis and hematologic parameters were measured throughout the course of primary infection. There was no evidence of anemia but differential leukocyte counts revealed distinct and reproducible patterns of white blood cell changes. A lymphocytosis developed at the end of the 1st and 5th weeks postinfection (p.i.). Neutrophil counts peaked 8 days p.i., although at that time there was no marked neutrophilic infiltration of the tissues. Eosinophil counts began to rise during the 2nd week p.i., and reached a peak during the 3rd week, followed by a decline and then another peak during the 5th week p.i. Eosinophilic infiltration of the tissues was remarkable during the period of peripheral eosinophilia. A wide zone of eosinophils surrounded the developing larvae at 22 days p.i. and persisted in some cases for a further 2 weeks. Eosinophils remained in lesser numbers in the connective tissue capsule throughout the infection, often in association with plasma cells. After oral challenge with 1,000 eggs infected rats showed brisk secondary eosinophilic responses 3 to 7 days later but other hematologic parameters were unaffected. Average peripheral eosinophil counts at 3 and 4 days post-challenge were significantly higher than those in unchallenged controls (P less than 0.05 and P less than 0.01, respectively). There was no detectable increase in eosinophilic infiltration of small intestinal tissues in challenged rats. These results are discussed in relation to current understanding of the mechanisms of eosinophil chemotaxis in vitro and the possible causes of local eosinophil accumulation in parasitic infections in vivo.
