Pancreatic duct obstruction by a benign polypoid adenoma of the ampulla of Vater

An unusual presentation of polyp of the ampulla of Vater is described. The patient initially had a chronic relapsing pancreatitis. Pancreatocholangiography revealed a tumor in the main pancreatic duct that proved to be a pedunculated polyp of the ampulla of Vater by operation. Transduodenal excision and sphincteroplasty may cure the lesion and relieve the symptoms of this disease.

Transplantation of chemically induced gastric cancer in Wistar rats

Seven of 35 male Wistar rats developed well-differentiated adenocarcinoma of the glandular stomach on combined treatment with N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitro soguanidine and 4-nitroquinolin 1-oxide. One of the tumors was successfully transplanted into newborn Wistar rats by subcutaneous inoculation. The latent period after inoculation was less than one month and the growth of the transplanted tumor was slow throughout 10 transplant generations. The tumor appeared nodular or cystic in subcutaneous tissues of rats and often caused ulceration of the skin. The histology of transplanted tumors was very similar to that of the primary tumor. Metastasis to both lungs was observed in one rat of the first transplant generation.

Carcinoma of the duodenum: its preoperative diagnosis

Carcinoma of the duodenum, although uncommon, can be diagnosed by direct visualization, photography of the tumour and biopsy by the fibre-duodenoscope. The duodenoscopic examination may not only distinguish carcinoma of the duodenum from pancreatic carcinoma, ampullary carcinoma and secondary tumour from an adjacent organ but will also enable a correct diagnosis to be made early in the course of the disease. It is therefore suggested that duodenoscopy and biopsy will increase the resectability and 5-year survival rate.

Magnetic Properties of the Lunar Crystalline Rock and Fines

Magnetic measurements have shown that nondiamagnetic minerals in a lunar crystalline rock of type B are (free Fe(2)+ in paramagnetic pyroxenes) : (antiferromagnetic FeSiO(3)) : (antiferromagnetic FeTiO(3)) : (ferromagnetic iron) = 4.3 : 7 : 20 : 0.08 in weight percentage. The abundance of ferromagnetic Fe in the lunar fines is about 7.5 times its abundance in the crystalline rock. The natural remanent magnetization of the crystalline rock of 7.5 x 10(-6) emu/ g in intensity may not be attributable to its thermoremanent magnetization.
