Abstract
As a class of key building blocks in the chemical industry, aromatic compounds are mainly derived from the catalytic reforming of petroleum-based long chain hydrocarbons. The dehydroaromatization of methane can also be achieved by using zeolitic catalysts under relatively high temperature. Herein we demonstrate that Si-doped GaN nanowires (NWs) with a 97% rationally constructed m-plane can directly convert methane into benzene and molecular hydrogen under ultraviolet (UV) illumination at rt. Mechanistic studies suggest that the exposed m-plane of GaN exhibited particularly high activity toward methane C-H bond activation and the quantum efficiency increased linearly as a function of light intensity. The incorporation of a Si-donor or Mg-acceptor dopants into GaN also has a large influence on the photocatalytic performance.

Abstract
We demonstrated the continuous-wave operation of a resonantly pumped Er:YAG single-mode channel waveguide laser with diffraction-limited output and nearly quantum defect limited efficiency. Using a longitudinally core-pumped, nearly square (61.2 μm×61.6 μm) Er3+:YAG waveguide embedded in an undoped YAG cladding, an output power of 9.1 W with a slope efficiency of 92.8% (versus absorbed pump power) has been obtained. To the best of our knowledge, this optical-to-optical efficiency is the highest ever demonstrated for a channel waveguide laser.

Abstract
Polymorphisms of estrogen receptor (ER) genes have been implicated in male infertility, but studies of this association have produced conflicting results. The present study was conducted to examine whether polymorphisms within the ERα and ERβ genes are susceptibility factors for human male idiopathic infertility in Chinese men. We investigated the association between the ERα gene gene and PvuII and XbaI polymorphisms and the ERβ gene and RsaI and AluI polymorphisms and idiopathic male infertility in Han Chinese men. A total of 204 men with oligozoospermia (sperm count <20 x 10(6)/mL) or azoospermia and 252 fertile control men were included in this study. The analysis revealed a strong association between the XbaI genotype distribution and impaired spermatogenesis (P = 0.0018). The frequency of the G allele was significantly lower in patients than in controls (P = 0.003). Furthermore, serum levels of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone in XbaI AA carriers were significantly higher than those in AG or GG carriers. Our findings further support a possible role of ERα in male infertility. Further studies are needed to replicate our findings, as well as to elucidate more fully the biological mechanisms of the modulation of ERα on human spermatogenesis.

Abstract
Triptolide(CAS 38748-32-2), a major active component of Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F (TWHF), is known to have multiple pharmacological activities. However, studies have also shown that triptolide is highly disrupt to the reproductive system by disrupting normal steroid hormone signaling. In the present study, we investigated the effect of triptolide (5, 10, or 20 nM for 24 h) on progesterone production by rat granulosa cells. Triptolide inhibited both basal and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG)- and 8-bromo-cAMP-stimulated progesterone production as revealed by RIA assay. Furthermore, the HCG-evoked increase in cellular cAMP content was also inhibited by triptolide, indicating that disruption of the cAMP/PKA signaling pathway may mediate the deleterious effects of triptolide on progesterone regulation. In addition, triptolide inhibited 25-OH-cholesterol-stimulated progesterone production, suggesting that activity of the P450 side chain cleavage (P450scc) enzyme was also be inhibited by triptolide. Western blot and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) assays further revealed that triptolide decreased mRNA and protein expression of P450scc and the steroidogenic regulatory (StAR) protein in granulosa cells. In contrast, cell viability tests using 3-(4,5-dimethyl-thiazol-2-yl)-2,5- diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) indicated that triptolide did not cause measurable cell death at doses that suppressed steroidogenesis. The reproductive toxicity of triptolide may be caused by disruption of cAMP/PKA-mediated expression of a number of progesterone synthesis enzymes or regulatory proteins, leading to reduced progesterone synthesis and reproductive dysfunction.

Abstract
Using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (QPCR), the relative transcriptional levels of seven channel catfish antimicrobial peptide (AMP) genes (NK-lysin type 1, NK-lysin type 2, NK-lysin type 3, bactericidal permeability-increasing protein, cathepsin D, hepcidin and liver-expressed AMP 2) in response to Edwardsiella ictaluri infection were determined. None of the AMP genes tested was significantly upregulated at 2 h post-infection. Hepcidin was the only one that was significantly (P<0.05) upregulated at 4, 6 and 12 h post-infection. At 24 and 48 h post-infection, four AMPs (hepcidin, NK-lysin type 1, NK-lysin type 3 and cathepsin D) were significantly (P<0.05) upregulated. Among all the AMPs that were significantly upregulated at different time points, hepcidin at 4, 6 and 12 h post-infection was upregulated the most. When catfish were injected with different doses of E. ictaluri, all lethal doses were able to induce significant (P <0.05) upregulation of hepcidin in the posterior kidney, whereas sublethal doses failed to induce any significant upregulation of hepcidin. In vitro growth studies revealed that the presence of synthetic hepcidin peptide at a concentration of 16 μm or higher significantly inhibited the cell proliferation of E. ictaluri. Taken together, our results suggest that hepcidin might play an important role in the channel catfish defence against E. ictaluri infection.

Abstract
Permian-Triassic boundary microbialites (PTBMs) are thin (0.05-15 m) carbonates formed after the end-Permian mass extinction. They comprise Renalcis-group calcimicrobes, microbially mediated micrite, presumed inorganic micrite, calcite cement (some may be microbially influenced) and shelly faunas. PTBMs are abundant in low-latitude shallow-marine carbonate shelves in central Tethyan continents but are rare in higher latitudes, likely inhibited by clastic supply on Pangaea margins. PTBMs occupied broadly similar environments to Late Permian reefs in Tethys, but extended into deeper waters. Late Permian reefs are also rich in microbes (and cements), so post-extinction seawater carbonate saturation was likely similar to the Late Permian. However, PTBMs lack widespread abundant inorganic carbonate cement fans, so a previous interpretation that anoxic bicarbonate-rich water upwelled to rapidly increase carbonate saturation of shallow seawater, post-extinction, is problematic. Preliminary pyrite framboid evidence shows anoxia in PTBM facies, but interbedded shelly faunas indicate oxygenated water, perhaps there was short-term pulsing of normally saturated anoxic water from the oxygen-minimum zone to surface waters. In Tethys, PTBMs show geographic variations: (i) in south China, PTBMs are mostly thrombolites in open shelf settings, largely recrystallised, with remnant structure of Renalcis-group calcimicrobes; (ii) in south Turkey, in shallow waters, stromatolites and thrombolites, lacking calcimicrobes, are interbedded, likely depth-controlled; and (iii) in the Middle East, especially Iran, stromatolites and thrombolites (calcimicrobes uncommon) occur in different sites on open shelves, where controls are unclear. Thus, PTBMs were under more complex control than previously portrayed, with local facies control playing a significant role in their structure and composition.

Abstract
AIMS To evaluate the feasibility of using an in vitro cell assay to select attenuated bacterial mutants. METHODS AND RESULTS Using catfish gill cells G1B, the feasibility of using an in vitro assay instead of in vivo virulence assay using live fish to select attenuated bacterial mutants was evaluated in this study. Pearson correlation analysis between in vitro virulence to G1B cells and in vivo virulence of Aeromonas hydrophila and Edwardsiella tarda revealed that there was a significant correlation between the two (r = -0.768, P value = 3.7 × 10(-16)). CONCLUSIONS The in vitro cell assay might be initially used to screen large quantities of bacteria to select attenuated mutants of catfish pathogens. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The in vitro cell assay using catfish gill cells to identify attenuated mutants of catfish pathogens will reduce cost involved in the in vivo virulence assay that requires many fish and aquariums.

Abstract
AIMS To develop an in vitro screening method to be used for identifying potential effective chemotherapeutants to control Aeromonas hydrophila infections. METHODS AND RESULTS Using catfish gill cells G1B and four chemicals (hydrogen peroxide, sodium chloride, potassium permanganate and D-mannose), the feasibility of using an in vitro screening method to identify potential effective chemotherapeutants was evaluated in this study. In vitro screening results revealed that, at concentration of 100 mg l⁻¹, H₂O₂ was the only chemical tested that was able to completely abolish the attachment and invasion of Aer. hydrophila to catfish gill cells. In vivo virulence studies using live channel catfish through bath immersion confirmed that H₂O₂ was the only chemical tested that was able to significantly (P < 0·001) reduce the mortality (from 90 or 100% to 0 or 20%) caused by Aer. hydrophila infections. CONCLUSIONS The in vitro screening method using catfish gill cells G1B could be used to initially identify potential effective chemotherapeutants to control Aer. hydrophila. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY An in vitro screening method using catfish gill cells to identify potential effective chemotherapeutants described here will cut cost in research compared with the method of using live fish to screen lead compounds for fish disease control.

Abstract
The geometric, electronic and magnetic properties of NO molecules adsorbed on the Ni(100) surface are investigated by the first-principles calculation on the basis of the density functional theory (DFT). The NO molecules are predicted to be chemisorbed at hollow site with an upright configuration at 0.125 ML and 0.5 ML coverages. After adsorption, the magnetic moment is significantly suppressed for surface Ni atom and almost quenched for NO molecule. This behavior can be reasonably explained by the difference of the backdonation process between the spin-up and spin-down electronic states, which is demonstrated by the spin-resolved differential charge density map.

Abstract
Genotoxic cellular stressors induce damage to the structure of DNA. This potentially compromises the genetic integrity of the cell. Such damage is particularly dangerous in the early embryo since transmission of defects can affect most cells in the body. Canonical responses of cells to such stress include delaying or blocking mitosis to allow DNA repair to occur or induction of cell death (apoptosis) to ensure that damage is not propagated. To date there have been only limited studies of the response of the preimplantation embryo to genotoxic stress. Ultra violet (UV) irradiation typically induces single strand DNA breaks while drugs such as the chemotherapeutic cisplatin commonly induce double strand breaks. ATM (Ataxia telangiectasia mutated) and ATR (Ataxia telangiectasia and rad3 related) are checkpoint kinase that mediate early responses of the cell to DNA damage. ATM primarily responds to DNA double strand breaks while ATR typically responds to single strand breaks and stalled replication forks. However, ATM and ATR may have partially overlapping and complementary functions. Both kinases can exert P53 dependent and independent responses. ATR protein was detected by immunofluorescence in all preimplantation stages up to the morulae stage. ATM protein was detected in oocytes and all stages. Cisplatin or UV-irradiation at the 2-cell stage caused increased nuclear staining of both ATM and ATR. UV-irradiation of 2-cell embryos induced irreversible, ATR-dependent, P53-independent cell-cycle block without apoptosis. Cisplatin allowed cell-cycle progression with progressive ATR and ATM-dependent, P53-independent apoptosis over subsequent cell-cycles. UV-irradiation of morula caused an ATR and ATM-dependent, P53-independent block of blastocyst formation while the block caused by cisplatin was ATR and ATM-dependent and at least partially P53-dependent. The results demonstrate complexity and maturation of the cellular responses of the embryo to defined genotoxic stressors and help to define the nature of embryopathy under these circumstances.

Abstract
The fluorinated quinacridone derivatives N,N'-dialkyl-2,9-difluoroquinacridone (Cn-DFQA, n = 4, 8, 10, 16) with different alkyl chains were used as building blocks to assemble luminescent micromaterials. It was demonstrated that the morphology and emission of the Cn-DFQA-based micromaterials strongly depended on their alkyl chain length. C4-DFQA and C8-DFQA showed stronger tendency to form 1-D microstructures, while C10-DFQA and C16-DFQA displayed the aggregation properties to form diamond and hexagonal platelike microcrystals, respectively. The photoluminescent (PL) spectra of Cn-DFQA (n = 4, 8, 10, 16) in THF dilute solutions displayed approximate profiles with a sharp emission peak at 533 nm and a shoulder at 573 nm, while the PL spectra of the Cn-DFQA-based micromaterials exhibited obviously red-shift emission bands at 622 nm for C4-DFQA, 627 nm for C8-DFQA, 614 nm for C10-DFQA, and 613 nm for C16-DFQA, respectively. The single-crystal X-ray structures of four Cn-DFQA compounds have been studied. In the C4-DFQA and C8-DFQA single crystals, there are 1-D molecular columns based on the intermolecular pi...pi and hydrogen bonding interactions. In the single crystals of C10-DFQA and C16-DFQA, the molecules assembled into 2-D molecular sheets based on the hydrogen bonds and C-H...pi interactions. The molecular packing structures provide a reasonable explanation for the alkyl chain length dependent morphologies and emission properties of fluorinated quinacridone micromaterials.

Abstract
The sequencing of the Strongylocentrotus purpuratus genome provides a unique opportunity to investigate the function and evolution of neural genes. The neurobiology of sea urchins is of particular interest because they have a close phylogenetic relationship with chordates, yet a distinctive pentaradiate body plan and unusual neural organization. Orthologues of transcription factors that regulate neurogenesis in other animals have been identified and several are expressed in neurogenic domains before gastrulation indicating that they may operate near the top of a conserved neural gene regulatory network. A family of genes encoding voltage-gated ion channels is present but, surprisingly, genes encoding gap junction proteins (connexins and pannexins) appear to be absent. Genes required for synapse formation and function have been identified and genes for synthesis and transport of neurotransmitters are present. There is a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors, including 874 rhodopsin-type receptors, 28 metabotropic glutamate-like receptors and a remarkably expanded group of 161 secretin receptor-like proteins. Absence of cannabinoid, lysophospholipid and melanocortin receptors indicates that this group may be unique to chordates. There are at least 37 putative G-protein-coupled peptide receptors and precursors for several neuropeptides and peptide hormones have been identified, including SALMFamides, NGFFFamide, a vasotocin-like peptide, glycoprotein hormones and insulin/insulin-like growth factors. Identification of a neurotrophin-like gene and Trk receptor in sea urchin indicates that this neural signaling system is not unique to chordates. Several hundred chemoreceptor genes have been predicted using several approaches, a number similar to that for other animals. Intriguingly, genes encoding homologues of rhodopsin, Pax6 and several other key mammalian retinal transcription factors are expressed in tube feet, suggesting tube feet function as photosensory organs. Analysis of the sea urchin genome presents a unique perspective on the evolutionary history of deuterostome nervous systems and reveals new approaches to investigate the development and neurobiology of sea urchins.

Abstract
Endothelial dysfunction has been demonstrated in post-menopausal women. To assess the relationship between peripheral vascular reserve and cardiac function during exercise in post-menopausal women, 91 subjects, who had no ischaemic findings on myocardial SPECT, were assigned to four groups: pre-menopausal women (n=13), post-menopausal women (n=33), younger men aged < or =50 years (n=10), and older men aged >50 years (n=35). First-pass radionuclide angiography was performed before and during bicycle exercise to calculate ejection fraction (EF) and peripheral vascular resistance (VR). There were no differences in haemodynamic variables among the groups at baseline. The per cent increase in EF=(exercise EF - resting EF)x100/resting EF, and the per cent decrease in VR=(resting VR - exercise VR)x100/resting VR were depressed in the post-menopausal women (0.4+/-2% and 35+/-3%, respectively) compared to the pre-menopausal women (10+/-3% and 47+/-3%, respectively; P<0.05 each). Although the age dependent impairment is thought to cause this depression, neither the per cent increase in EF nor the per cent decrease in VR in the older men was significantly different from that in the younger men. Post-menopausal women exhibited depressed cardiac function during exercise, which may be related to the impairment of peripheral vascular function after menopause.

Abstract
Retinal development occurs in mice between embryonic day E11.5 and post-natal day P8 as uncommitted neuroblasts assume retinal cell fates. The genetic pathways regulating retinal development are being identified but little is understood about the global networks that link these pathways together or the complexity of the expressed gene set required to form the retina. At E14.5, the retina contains mostly uncommitted neuroblasts and newly differentiated neurons. Here we report a sequence analysis of an E14.5 retinal cDNA library. To date, we have archived 15 268 ESTs and have annotated 9035, which represent 5288 genes. The fraction of singly occurring ESTs as a function of total EST accrual suggests that the total number of expressed genes in the library could approach 27 000. The 9035 ESTs were categorized by their known or putative functions. Representation of the genes involved in eye development was significantly higher in the retinal clone set compared with the NIA mouse 15K cDNA clone set. Screening with a microarray containing 864 cDNA clones using wild-type and brn-3b (-/-) retinal cDNA probes revealed a potential regulatory linkage between the transcription factor Brn-3b and expression of GAP-43, a protein associated with axon growth. The retinal EST database will be a valuable platform for gene expression profiling and a new source for gene discovery.

Abstract
This study examined the role of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) in synaptic plasticity at the developing neuromuscular junction. Transgenic mice overexpressing GDNF in skeletal muscle under the myosin light chain-1 promoter were isolated. Northern blot and ELISA at 6 weeks of age indicated that GDNF mRNA and protein levels were elevated threefold in the lateral gastrocnemius muscle (LGM) of the GDNF-transgenic animals. Histochemical examination of LGM tissue sections at 6 weeks of age revealed a 70% increase in the number of cholinesterase-positive end plates without changes in end-plate area. Multiple end plates on a single muscle fiber were also observed, in addition to multiple axonal processes terminating on individual end plates. No change in the number of spinal motoneurons, overall LGM size, or muscle type composition was observed. Finally, overexpression of GDNF in muscle caused hypertrophy of neuronal somata in dorsal root ganglia without affecting their number. These findings demonstrate that overexpression of a single neurotrophic factor in skeletal muscle induces multiple end-plate formation and maintains hyperinnervation well beyond the normal developmental period. We suggest that GDNF, a muscle-derived motoneuron neurotrophic factor, serves an important role in the regulation of synaptic plasticity in the developing and adult neuromuscular junction.

Abstract
This study investigated the clinical value of I-123 MIBG pulmonary accumulation and washout in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). Nineteen patients with CHF and 15 normal volunteers (NL) were included. The uptake ratio of heart to mediastinum (H/M), that of lung fields to mediastinum (L/M), and washout rate (WR) of the heart and lung fields were calculated in anterior planar images and compared with results of echocardiography and cardiac catheterization. In the CHF group, the lung uptake in delayed images increased and lung WR was decreased, suggesting pulmonary endothelial lesions. Furthermore, there was a negative correlation between right and left lung WR and pulmonary arterial diastolic pressure (PA(D)) and pulmonary arterial systolic pressure (PA(s)) in the CHF group. Since the WR of MIBG reflected PA, it may be used as an index of severity of cardiac dysfunction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the curative effect of transnasal medial canthopexy. METHODS By a coronal or medial canthal incision, we applied transnasal medial canthopexy to repair medial canthal detachment. A total of 78 patients received the operation. RESULTS Of them, 64 patients obtained satisfactory postoperative appearance with one operation; 6 patients obtained satisfactory results with two operations. The operation was unsuccessful in 8 patients. CONCLUSION This method is one of the ideal methods of repairing medial canthal detachment, however its indications should be observed.

Abstract
During aggregation, Dictyostelium establish nanomolar oscillation waves of extracellular cAMP, but as development progresses, cells become responsive to higher, non-fluctuating concentrations of cAMP. The regulation of the promoter responsible for expression of cAMP receptor subtype 1, CAR1, during aggregation reflects these signaling variations. Transcription of CAR1 from the early, aggregation promoter is activated by cAMP pulsing, but is repressed by continuous exposure to micromolar concentrations of cAMP. Deletion and mutation analyses of this promoter had defined an element essential for cAMP-regulated expression, and mobility shift assay, DNA crosslinking and DNase I footprinting experiments had identified a nuclear protein (CRTF) with zinc-dependent sequence binding specificity. In our study, CRTF was purified to homogeneity, peptides were sequenced and full-length cDNAs were obtained. The deduced CRTF protein is ∼100 kDa with a C-terminal, zinc finger-like motif required for DNA binding; CRTF purified from cells, however, represents only a 40 kDa C-terminal fragment that retains DNA-binding activity.
As might have been predicted if CRTF were essential for the regulation of CAR1, crtf-null strains fail to develop under standard conditions or to exhibit induced expression of CAR1 or other cAMP-regulated genes. Furthermore, crtf-nulls also fail to sporulate, even under conditions that bypass the dependence on early cAMP signaling pathways. In addition, early developmental events of crtf-null strains could be rescued with exogenous cAMP treatment, constitutive expression of CAR1 or co-development with wild-type cells; however, these treatments were insufficient to promote sporulation. This suggests a cell-autonomous role for CRTF during late development that is separate from its capacity to control CAR1 expression. Finally, ablation of CRTF promotes a precocious induction of certain cAMP-dependent gene expression pathways. We suggest that CRTF may function to help insulate distinct pathways from simultaneous and universal activation by cAMP. CRTF, thus, exhibits multiple complex and independent regulatory functions during Dictyostelium development.

Abstract
A partly periodically poled KTiOPO(4) (KTP) crystal has been designed to integrate quasi-phase-matched second-harmonic generation (QPM SHG) with sum-frequency generation in one crystal for generating a third-harmonic beam. The highest conversion efficiencies of 45% and 3% have been achieved in our experiments for QPM SHG and third-harmonic generation, respectively, by use of picosecond laser pulses at 1.327 microm . We have also discovered that periodically poled KTP has slightly different indices (n(z)) from bulk KTP.

Abstract
We have examined the effects of a replication-defective adenovirus encoding p53 (RPR/INGN 201 [Ad5CMV-p53]; Adp53), alone or in combination with the breast cancer therapeutic doxorubicin (Adriamycin), to suppress growth and induce apoptosis in breast cancer cells in vitro. We have also examined the in vivo effect of intratumoral administration of Adp53, alone or in combination with doxorubicin, to suppress the growth of established subcutaneous MDA-MB-435 breast cancer tumors. Finally, using the MDA-MB-435 orthotopic model of metastatic breast cancer, we have examined the effect of systemic administration of Adp53, alone or in combination with doxorubicin, to reduce the incidence of metastases. We find that whereas in vitro treatment of cells with Adp53 reduces [(3)H]thymidine incorporation by about 90% at 48 hr, cell viability at 6 days is reduced by only some 50% relative to controls. Although apoptosis is detectable in Adp53-treated cultures, these results suggest that a large fraction of Adp53-treated cells merely undergo reversible cell cycle arrest. Combined treatment with Adp53 and doxorubicin results in a greater than additive loss of viability in vitro and increased apoptosis. In vivo, locally administered Adp53 suppresses growth of established subcutaneous tumors in nude mice and suppression is enhanced by doxorubicin. In the metastatic breast cancer model, systemic administration of Adp53 plus doxorubicin leads to a significant reduction in the incidence of metastases relative to Adp53 or doxorubicin alone. Taken together, these data indicate an additive to synergistic effect of Adp53 and doxorubicin for the treatment of primary and metastatic breast cancer.

Abstract
Laboratory studies have suggested that some alkylphenols and pesticides elicit developmental toxicity to crustaceans. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the possibility that the alkylphenol degradation product 4-nonylphenol is embryotoxic to the crustacean Daphnia magna through its known ability to interfere with the metabolic elimination of testosterone. Direct exposure of maternal daphnids to testosterone caused developmental abnormalities in neonates that consisted of partial arrest of early embryonic development and abnormalities in shell spine and first antennae development. Exposure of maternal daphnids to concentrations of 4-nonylphenol also produced developmental abnormalities though the profile of abnormalities was distinct from that observed throughout the testosterone concentration-response curve. Thus, 4-nonylphenol is a developmental toxicant in daphnids, but its toxicity is not consistent with that elicited by elevated testosterone accumulation. Further experiments demonstrated that testosterone was directly toxic to developing embryos, and the maternal organism can serve as the vector for this toxicity. In contrast, neither direct embryo exposure nor early maternal exposure to 4-nonylphenol elicited embryotoxicity consistent with that observed during continuous maternal and gestational exposure. Thus, 4-nonylphenol is not directly embryotoxic at these exposure levels, but rather toxicity is mediated by maternal influences during gestation. The threshold concentration for the occurrence of developmental abnormalities ( approximately 44 microg/L) indicates that typical environmental concentrations of 4-nonylphenol pose no imminent hazard with respect to developmental toxicity. However, these effects do occur at sufficiently low levels to warrant evaluation of the relative susceptibility of other crustacean species to this previously uncharacterized mode of toxicity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the dynamic changes of the plasma ET-1 and the effect of low dose nitroglycerin in patients with coronary artery bypass surgery. METHODS 40 patients with coronary artery bypass surgery were divided into group A and B. Group B received intravenous nitroglycerin 1 microg x kg(-1) x min(-1) perioperatively. We used RIA to assay the plasma ET-1 level. All the hemodynamic parameters were recorded by the Swan-Ganz catheter. RESULTS The preoperative plasma ET-1 level in patients with coronary artery disease was significantly higher than the normal level. Five minutes after cardiopulmonary bypass in these patients the plasma ET-1 level was increased significantly until 6 to 8 hours after operation. The increased plasma ET-1 level in group B was less than in group A. There was a positive correlation between the plasma ET-1 level and the mean pulmonary pressure in group A 2 and 8 hours after operation. CONCLUSION In patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery, the increased plasma ET-1 level may be partly due to the influence of cardiopulmonary bypass. Low dose of nitroglycerin is beneficial to these patients.

Abstract
The potential use of riluzole (a glutamate release inhibitor) alone or in combination with methyl-prednisolone (MP) in treating acute spinal cored injury (SCI) was examined. Rats received a contusion injury to the spinal cord using the NYU impactor and were treated with vehicle, riluzole (8 mg/kg), MP(30 mg/kg), or riluzole + MP at 2 and 4 h following injury. Animals continued to receive riluzole treatment (8 mg/kg) for a period of 1 week. The animals were then tested weekly for functional recovery using the BBB open field locomotor score. At the end of testing (6 weeks after injury), each spinal cord was examined for the amount of remaining tissue at the injury site and a myelination index was used to quantify remaining axons in the ventromedial white matter. In this study, only the combination treatment was found to significantly improve behavioral recovery as assessed using the BBB open field locomotor scale. In addition, the combination treatment promoted tissue sparing at the lesion epicenter, but had no clear effect on the index of myelination. The results of this study clearly demonstrate the potential beneficial effects of a combination approach in the treatment of traumatic SCI.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the anti-convulsant agent, riluzole, on high-affinity glutamate uptake as measured in rat spinal cord synaptosomes. The rate of glutamate uptake was significantly increased in the presence of 0.1 microM and 1.0 microM riluzole, but not at the higher concentrations examined. Kinetics analysis demonstrated that riluzole (0.1 microM) decreased the apparent K(m) by 21% and increased the V(max) by 31%. Glutamate uptake also was significantly increased in spinal cord synaptosomes obtained from rats treated with 8 mg/kg (i.p.) of riluzole and sacrificed 4 h later. The increase in glutamate uptake in vitro was not affected by pretreatment either with H7, an inhibitor of PKA and PKC, or with the PKC activating phorbol ester, 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate. Previous studies have shown that some of the actions of riluzole are mediated by G proteins sensitive to pertussis toxin. Surprisingly, treatment of synaptosomes with pertussis toxin alone increased the rate of glutamate uptake, while having no effect on uptake in the presence of riluzole. However, pretreatment with cholera toxin was found to completely block the effects of riluzole on glutamate uptake. These results reveal an additional mechanism by which riluzole can affect glutamatergic neurotransmission, and provides further support that riluzole may prove beneficial in the treatment of traumatic central nervous system injuries involving the excitotoxic actions of glutamate.

Abstract
Rats received a contusion injury to the spinal cord followed by treatment with riluzole (a glutamate release inhibitor, 8 mg/kg), methylprednisolone (MP 30 mg/kg) or both. At 4 h following injury, spinal cords were removed and synaptosomes prepared and examined using five measures of oxidative stress. Riluzole treatment was found to improve mitochondrial function, and enhance glutamate and glucose uptake. As expected, MP treatment was found to reduce lipid peroxidation, but also improved glutamate and glucose uptake. Interestingly, the combination treatment was found to be effective in improving all five measures of oxidative stress. The results of this study clearly demonstrate the potential beneficial effects of a combination approach in the treatment of oxidative stress events in traumatic spinal cord injury.

Abstract
We have developed a simple method that uses cw irradiation from an argon laser to measure the damage threshold of KTP crystals. Our experimental results show that there are two types of damage in KTP crystal, depending on the polarization of the incident laser beam. One type of optical damage is the appearance of gray tracks, including both dark tracks and orange dots, when the pump polarization is perpendicular to the z axis. The other type is invisible damage when the polarization is parallel to the z axis. In addition, we have also observed weak photorefractive two-wave mixing in KTP crystals in each of these polarization states. After a systematic analysis we have concluded that the first type of damage is due to the formation and absorption of Ti3+ and Fe3+ centers and the second is due to the drift of K+ ions. The weak photorefractive effect is the result of screening of the electric field by the drifted K+ ions.

Abstract
We report the case of a boy with achondroplasia and i(21q) Down syndrome. Besides craniofacial features typical in Down syndrome, the skeletal findings of achondroplasia dominate the clinical picture. The diagnosis of Down syndrome was based on clinical features and the cytogenetic finding of i(21q) trisomy 21. The diagnosis of achondroplasia was based on the presence of clinical and radiographic findings and confirmed by the presence of a common FGFR3 gene mutation (Gly380Arg) detected by restriction enzyme analysis and sequencing of the polymerase chain reaction products. This is the first report of achondroplasia associated with i(21q) Down syndrome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In order to simultaneous correct the contracted eye socket and orbitozygomatic hypoplasia that caused by early ophthalmectomy and radiotherapy. METHODS The one-stage surgical procedure for eye socket reconstruction and bone graft coverage included rotation of a postauricular skin flap and a temporal fascial flap. Hydroxyapatite implant was inserted as an onlay bone graft substitute to enlarge the orbitozygomatic region. RESULTS In 16 cases using this method, the results were satisfactory and encouraging with minor complications. CONCLUSION This procedure is effective for radiated complex deformities in paraorbit and eye socket.

Abstract
We have achieved effective third-harmonic generation (THG) by cascading second-harmonic and sum-frequency generation in a single cerium-doped KTiOPO (4) crystal by using femtosecond laser pulses at 1.32 microm. A conversion efficiency of 0.17% was achieved with an average pump power of 35 mW.Furthermore, a unique quadratic power dependence for this type of THG was confirmed. We developed a theory and obtained an analytical solution for the THG.The solution exactly describes the measured characteristics of the THG.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the risk factors of naevus fusco-caeruleus zygomaticus, a case-control study was conducted in 100 cases. METHODS The selection of major risk factors was through logistic regression and chi 2-test. RESULTS It was suggested that the high exposed rate in the family history of objectives was related to "genetic susceptibility". Histories of using cosmetics and exposure to ultraviolet ray were identified as environmental risk factors. However, there was no single factor that could completely explain the etiology of naevus fusco-caeruleus zygomaticus. CONCLUSION We believe that coordinating effects of both susceptibility in genetics and environmental risk factors may play important roles in the pathogenesis of naevus fusco-caeruleus zygomaticus. Thus combined research on the location of gene mutation with environmental factors is important in the discovery of the etiology of naevus fusco-caeruleus zygomaticus.

Abstract
The domestic application of PACS will surely be developed in the future, but it will still take a few years. This paper proposes a tradeoff scheme: Attaching to digital imaging apparatus the PACS components, which mainly contain the Auto-archiving unit, the Communication unit supporting WAN as well as LAN and the Converting Interface unit to the hospital PACS. In this way, a single digital imaging apparatus can archive and transmit data independently, also can merge with the hospital PACS conveniently in the future. In this paper, both the design and the implement are discussed in detail.

Abstract
We report on a 43-year-old woman who was referred for evaluation because of minor facial anomalies, myopathy, sterility, short stature, hearing loss, downward slant of palpebral fissures, bilateral ptosis, severe micro/retrognathia, high arched palate, and scoliosis. Cytogenetic analyses utilizing GTG/CBG bandings showed presence of one i(1p) and one i(1q) without normal chromosome 1 homologues. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis showed hybridization to only two chromosomes, consistent with the G-banded interpretation of i(1p) and i(1q). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of isochromosomes 1p and 1q replacing the two normal chromosome 1s. Molecular investigations using markers for chromosome 1 showed inheritance of only one set of paternal alleles and absence of any maternal alleles in the patient. The adverse phenotype of the patient may be due to one or more recessive mutations, genomic imprinting, or a combination of both.

Abstract
Major stages of Dictyostelium development are regulated by secreted, extracellular cAMP through activation of a serpentine receptor family. During early development, oscillations of extracellular cAMP mobilize cells for aggregation; later, continuous exposure to higher extracellular cAMP concentrations downregulates early gene expression and promotes cytodifferentiation and cell-specific gene expression. The cAMP receptor 1 gene CAR1 has two promoters that are differentially responsive to these extracellular cAMP stimuli. The early CAR1 promoter is induced by nM pulses of cAMP, which in turn are generated by CAR1-dependent activation of adenylyl cyclase (AC). Higher, non-fluctuating concentrations of cAMP will adapt this AC stimulus-response, repress the activated early promoter and induce the dormant late promoter. We now identify a critical element of the pulse-induced CAR1 promoter and a nuclear factor with sequence-specific interaction. Mutation of four nucleotides within the element prevents both in vitro protein binding and in vivo expression of an otherwise fully active early CAR1 promoter and multimerization of the wild-type, but not mutant, sequence will confer cAMP regulation to a quiescent heterologous promoter. These cis and trans elements, thus, constitute a part of the molecular response to the cAMP transmembrane signal cascade that regulates early development of Dictyostelium.

Abstract
Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is a neurotrophic factor that influences the survival and function of several neuronal populations in the central (CNS) and peripheral nervous systems. The actions of GDNF are mediated by a multicomponent receptor complex composed of the tyrosine kinase product of c-ret and the ligand-binding protein GDNF receptor alpha (GDNFR-alpha). In the present study, we used in situ hybridization to localize cells expressing the mRNA for these GDNF receptor subunits in rat CNS. As reported previously, GDNFR-alpha and c-ret mRNA are present in the substantia nigra and ventral tegmental area, regions containing GDNF-responsive dopamine neurons. However, both mRNA were found in motor neurons of spinal cord and brainstem nuclei that innervate skeletal muscle. These areas include alpha motor neurons in the ventral horn of spinal cord and neurons in hypoglossal, facial, trigeminal, and abducens nuclei. In areas rostral to the substantia nigra, c-ret mRNA is not detected, whereas GDNFR-alpha is found in numerous brain structures, including the hippocampus, cortex, medial geniculate, and the medial habenula, the latter area expressing the highest levels of GDNFR-alpha mRNA in brain. These results provide evidence that c-ret and GDNFR-alpha mRNA are expressed in neuronal populations involved in motor function and provides further support for GDNF as a target-derived neurotrophic for these motor neurons. The observation that GDNFR-alpha mRNA is localized in several brain structures that do not contain detectable levels of c-ret mRNA indicates that either GDNFR-alpha utilizes signal transduction molecules other than c-ret in these areas or that other GDNF-like ligands that utilize GDNFR-alpha as a receptor may be present.

Abstract
Fab-peptide complexes formed between a 15 residue peptide derived from the HIV-1 gp120 V3 loop and two of its cognate monoclonal antibodies, 5023A and 5025A, were studied using isotope-edited solution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. Since these antibodies neutralize HIV-1 virus with different strain specificities, this study was conducted to better understand the nature of these differences. The amide proton and nitrogen NMR resonances of specific residues were used to monitor the backbone of this peptide in these complexes. Three central residues of this peptide ('RAF') were found to be strongly affected by binding to both antibodies. Several other peptide residues were affected by binding to antibody 5023A but not 5025A. The antibody epitopes mapped by NMR are similar to those obtained previously via PEPSCAN at higher pH. One main difference between the PEPSCAN and NMR determined epitopes for 5023A involved two glycine residues of the peptide. By NMR, one of these glycines was more dramatically affected by antibody binding than predicted by PEPSCAN, while the other was much less so.
