Enhancing Focusing and Defocusing Capabilities with a Dynamically Reconfigurable Metalens Utilizing Sb2Se3 Phase-Change Material

Metalenses are emerging as an alternative to digital micromirror devices (DMDs), with the advantages of compactness and flexibility. The exploration of metalenses has ignited enthusiasm among optical engineers, positioning them as the forthcoming frontier in technology. In this paper, we advocate for the implementation of the phase-change material, Sb2Se3, capable of providing swift, reversible, non-volatile focusing and defocusing within the 1550 nm telecom spectrum. The lens, equipped with a robust ITO microheater, offers unparalleled functionality and constitutes a significant step toward dynamic metalenses that can be integrated with beamforming applications. After a meticulously conducted microfabrication process, we showcase a device capable of rapid tuning (0.1 MHz level) for metalens focusing and defocusing at C band communication, achieved by alternating the PCM state between the amorphous and crystalline states. The findings from the experiment show that the device has a high contrast ratio for switching of 28.7 dB.

Photoinduced bidirectional switching in lipid membranes containing azobenzene glycolipids

Following the reaction of biological membranes to external stimuli reveals fundamental insights into cellular function. Here, self-assembled lipid monolayers act as model membranes containing photoswitchable azobenzene glycolipids for investigating structural response during isomerization by combining Langmuir isotherms with X-ray scattering. Controlled in-situ trans/cis photoswitching of the azobenzene N = N double bond alters the DPPC monolayer structure, causing reproducible changes in surface pressure and layer thickness, indicating monolayer reorientation. Interestingly, for monolayers containing azobenzene glycolipids, along with the expected DPPC phase transitions an additional discontinuity is observed. The associated reorintation represents a crossover point, with the surface pressure and layer thickness changing in opposite directions above and below. This is evidence that the azobenzene glycolipids themselves change orientation within the monolayer. Such behaviour suggests that azobenzene glycolipids can act as a bidirectional switch in DPPC monolayers providing a tool to investigate membrane structure-function relationships in depth.

Hub genes, diagnostic model, and predicted drugs in systemic sclerosis by integrated bioinformatics analysis

Background: Systemic sclerosis (scleroderma; SSc), a rare and heterogeneous connective tissue disease, remains unclear in terms of its underlying causative genes and effective therapeutic approaches. The purpose of the present study was to identify hub genes, diagnostic markers and explore potential small-molecule drugs of SSc. Methods: The cohorts of data used in this study were downloaded from the Gene Expression Complex (GEO) database. Integrated bioinformatic tools were utilized for exploration, including Weighted Gene Co-Expression Network Analysis (WGCNA), least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression, gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA), Connectivity Map (CMap) analysis, molecular docking, and pharmacokinetic/toxicity properties exploration. Results: Seven hub genes (THY1, SULF1, PRSS23, COL5A2, NNMT, SLCO2B1, and TIMP1) were obtained in the merged gene expression profiles of GSE45485 and GSE76885. GSEA results have shown that they are associated with autoimmune diseases, microorganism infections, inflammatory related pathways, immune responses, and fibrosis process. Among them, THY1 and SULF1 were identified as diagnostic markers and validated in skin samples from GSE32413, GSE95065, GSE58095 and GSE125362. Finally, ten small-molecule drugs with potential therapeutic effects were identified, mainly including phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors (BRL-50481, dipyridamole), TGF-β receptor inhibitor (SB-525334), and so on. Conclusion: This study provides new sights into a deeper understanding the molecular mechanisms in the pathogenesis of SSc. More importantly, the results may offer promising clues for further experimental studies and novel treatment strategies.

[A prospective cohort study of long-term fasting blood glucose variability and risk of mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes]

Objective: To investigate the association between long-term fasting blood glucose (FPG) variability and all-cause mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: A total of 7 174 type 2 diabetic patients included in National Basic Public Health Service Program in Changshu of Jiangsu Province were recruited as participants. Long-term glucose variability was assessed using standard deviation (SD), coefficient of variation (CV), average real variability (ARV), and variability independent of the mean (VIM) across FPG measurements at the more than three visits. Death information were mainly obtained from the death registry system in Jiangsu. Then Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the associations of four variability indicators and all-cause mortality's hazard ratios (HRs) and their 95%CIs. Results: Among 55 058.50 person-years of the follow-up, the mean follow-up time was 7.67 years, and 898 deaths occurred during the follow-up period. After adjustment, compared with T1 group, the Cox regression model showed that HRs of T3 group in SD, CV, ARV and VIM were 1.24 (95%CI: 1.03-1.49), 1.20 (95%CI: 1.01-1.43), 1.28 (95%CI: 1.07-1.55) and 1.20 (95%CI:1.01-1.41), respectively. HRs of per 1 SD higher SD, CV, ARV and VIM were 1.13 (95%CI: 1.06-1.21), 1.08 (95%CI: 1.01-1.15), 1.05 (95%CI: 1.00-1.12) and 1.09 (95%CI: 1.02-1.16) for all-cause mortality, respectively. In the stratified analysis, age, gender, hypoglycemic agent and insulin uses had no effect on the above associations (all P for interaction >0.05). Conclusion: Long-term FPG glycemic variability was positively associated with the risk of all-cause mortality in type 2 diabetes patients.

Mechanistic investigation of the differential synergistic neurotoxicity between pesticide metam sodium and copper or zinc

Epidemiological studies suggest neurological disorders have been associated with the co-exposure to certain pesticides and transition metals. The present study aims to investigate whether co-exposure to the widely-used pesticide metam sodium and copper (Cu²⁺) or zinc ion (Zn²⁺) is able to cause synergistic neurotoxicity in neural PC12 cells and its possible mechanism(s). We found that both metam/Cu²⁺ and metam/Zn²⁺ synergistically induced apoptosis, intracellular Cu²⁺/Zn²⁺ uptake, reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, double-strand DNA breakage, mitochondrial membrane potential decrease, and nerve function disorder. In addition, metam/Cu²⁺ was shown to release cytochrome c and apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF) from mitochondria to cytoplasm and nucleus, respectively, and activate the caspase 9, 8, 3, 7. However, metam/Zn²⁺ induced caspase 7 activation and AIF translocation and mildly activated cytochrome c/caspase 9/caspase 3 pathway. Furthermore, metam/Cu²⁺ activated caspase 3/7 by the p38 pathway, whereas metam/Zn²⁺ did so via both the p38 and JNK pathways. These results demonstrated that metam/Cu²⁺ or metam/Zn²⁺ co-exposure cause synergistic neurotoxicity via different mechanisms, indicating a potential risk to human health when they environmentally co-exist.

Small bots, big impact: solving the conundrum of cooperation in optional Prisoner's Dilemma game through simple strategies

Cooperation plays a crucial role in both nature and human society, and the conundrum of cooperation attracts the attention from interdisciplinary research. In this study, we investigated the evolution of cooperation in optional Prisoner's Dilemma games by introducing simple bots. We focused on one-shot and anonymous games, where the bots could be programmed to always cooperate, always defect, never participate or choose each action with equal probability. Our results show that cooperative bots facilitate the emergence of cooperation among ordinary players in both well-mixed populations and a regular lattice under weak imitation scenarios. Introducing loner bots has no impact on the emergence of cooperation in well-mixed populations, but it facilitates the dominance of cooperation in regular lattices under strong imitation scenarios. However, too many loner bots on a regular lattice inhibit the spread of cooperation and can eventually result in a breakdown of cooperation. Our findings emphasize the significance of bot design in promoting cooperation and offer useful insights for encouraging cooperation in real-world scenarios.

Clinical factors of PICC-RVT in cancer patients: a meta-analysis

PURPOSE

There is a lack of studies that systematically evaluate the clinical factors of PICC-RVT such as treatment, tumor stage, metastasis, and chemotherapy drugs in cancer patients. This study, therefore, aims to evaluate the clinical factors of catheter-related venous thrombosis in cancer patients with indwelling PICC to provide a basis for the clinical prevention and reduction of thrombosis.

METHODS

Relevant studies were retrieved from major databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), WanFang Data, and China Biology Medicine disc (CMB)) and searched from their earliest available dates until July 2022. If two or more studies had the same outcome, a meta-analysis using RevMan 5.4.1 was performed. This systematic review was registered at PROSPERO (number CRD42022358426).

RESULTS

A total of 19 articles involving 19,824 patients were included for quantitative analysis. Meta-analysis of these studies indicated that a history of chemotherapy, tumor type, tumor stage, presence or absence of metastasis, and use of fluorouracil, etoposide, platinum drugs, and taxane were all risk factors for PICC catheter thrombosis in cancer patients.

CONCLUSION

In clinical PICC catheter thrombosis prevention, patients with the above characteristics should be watched more closely than other patients, as they have a higher risk for PICC catheter thrombosis. Based on the present evidence at hand, radiotherapy cannot be considered to be related to the formation of PICC-RVT in cancer patients.

Unexpectedly high thermoelectric performance of anisotropic Zr2Cl4monolayer

Recently, the Hf2Cl4-type materials as functional materials have attracted broad interest because of their enormous potential in thermoelectric (TE) applications. However, relevant investigations are still scarce up to now. To explore the Hf2Cl4-type materials with excellent TE properties, we focus on the thermoelectric properties of Zr2Cl4 monolayer and calculate the thermoelectric parameters based on first-principles calculations and Boltzmann transport equation. Although, as compared to some typical TE materials, it exhibits better heat transport and thus higher lattice thermal conductivity, the figure of merits (ZT) of both p-type and n-type Zr2Cl4 reach an unexpectedly high value of 3.90 and 3.60, respectively, owing to the larger electrical conductivity and higher power factor. Additionally, owing to the prominent difference in electrical conductivity between the x- and y-direction, strong anisotropy in ZT values is observed. Our study reveals that both n-type and p-type Zr2Cl4 monolayers have the potential for future thermoelectric applications.&#xD.

MXene-Based Aptameric Fluorosensor for Sensitive and Rapid Detection of COVID-19

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-caused COVID-19 pandemic has rapidly escalated into the largest global health emergency, which pushes to develop detection kits for the detection of COVID-19 with high sensitivity, specificity, and fast analysis. Here, aptamer-functionalized MXene nanosheet is demonstrated as a novel bionanosensor that detects COVID-19. Upon binding to the spike receptor binding domain of SARS-CoV-2, the aptamer probe is released from MXene surface restoring the quenched fluorescence. The performances of the fluorosensor are evaluated using antigen protein, cultured virus, and swab specimens from COVID-19 patients. It is evidenced that this sensor can detect SARS-CoV-2 spike protein at final concentration of 38.9 fg mL^-1 and SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus (limit of detection: 7.2 copies) within 30 min. Its application for clinical samples analysis is also demonstrated successfully. This work offers an effective sensing platform for sensitive and rapid detection of COVID-19 with high specificity.

Hybrid Domain Consistency Constraints-Based Deep Neural Network for Facial Expression Recognition

Facial expression recognition (FER) has received increasing attention. However, multiple factors (e.g., uneven illumination, facial deflection, occlusion, and subjectivity of annotations in image datasets) probably reduce the performance of traditional FER methods. Thus, we propose a novel Hybrid Domain Consistency Network (HDCNet) based on a feature constraint method that combines both spatial domain consistency and channel domain consistency. Specifically, first, the proposed HDCNet mines the potential attention consistency feature expression (different from manual features, e.g., HOG and SIFT) as effective supervision information by comparing the original sample image with the augmented facial expression image. Second, HDCNet extracts facial expression-related features in the spatial and channel domains, and then it constrains the consistent expression of features through the mixed domain consistency loss function. In addition, the loss function based on the attention-consistency constraints does not require additional labels. Third, the network weights are learned to optimize the classification network through the loss function of the mixed domain consistency constraints. Finally, experiments conducted on the public RAF-DB and AffectNet benchmark datasets verify that the proposed HDCNet improved classification accuracy by 0.3-3.84% compared to the existing methods.

Preparation and Properties of Natural Polysaccharide-Based Drug Delivery Nanoparticles

In recent years, natural polysaccharides have been widely used in the preparation of drug delivery systems. In this paper, novel polysaccharide-based nanoparticles were prepared by layer-by-layer assembly technology using silica as a template. The layers of nanoparticles were constructed based on the electrostatic interaction between a new pectin named NPGP and chitosan (CS). The targeting ability of nanoparticles was formed by grafting the RGD peptide, a tri-peptide motif containing arginine, glycine, and aspartic acid with high affinity to integrin receptors. The layer-by-layer assembly nanoparticles (RGD-(NPGP/CS)₃NPGP) exhibited a high encapsulation efficiency (83.23 ± 6.12%), loading capacity (76.51 ± 1.24%), and pH-sensitive release property for doxorubicin. The RGD-(NPGP/CS)₃NPGP nanoparticles showed better targeting to HCT-116 cells, the integrin αvβ3 high expression human colonic epithelial tumor cell line with higher uptake efficiency than MCF7 cells, the human breast carcinoma cell line with normal integrin expression. In vitro antitumor activity tests showed that the doxorubicin-loaded nanoparticles could effectively inhibit the proliferation of the HCT-116 cells. In conclusion, RGD-(NPGP/CS)₃NPGP nanoparticles have potential as novel anticancer drug carriers because of their good targeting and drug-carrying activity.

HDAC inhibitors enhance the anti-tumor effect of immunotherapies in hepatocellular carcinoma

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common liver malignancy with a poor prognosis and increasing incidence, remains a serious health problem worldwide. Immunotherapy has been described as one of the ideal ways to treat HCC and is transforming patient management. However, the occurrence of immunotherapy resistance still prevents some patients from benefiting from current immunotherapies. Recent studies have shown that histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACis) can enhance the efficacy of immunotherapy in a variety of tumors, including HCC. In this review, we present current knowledge and recent advances in immunotherapy-based and HDACi-based therapies for HCC. We highlight the fundamental dynamics of synergies between immunotherapies and HDACis, further detailing current efforts to translate this knowledge into clinical benefits. In addition, we explored the possibility of nano-based drug delivery system (NDDS) as a novel strategy to enhance HCC treatment.

Bibliometric analysis of global research on bioretention from 2007 to 2021

Bioretention is a typical low impact development (LID) practice that helps reduce peak urban stormwater runoff and runoff pollutant concentrations (e.g., heavy metals, suspended solids, organic pollutants), which has become an important part of urban stormwater management over the past 15 years. To understand the research hotspots and frontiers in the field of bioretention facility research and provide a reference for research into bioretention facilities, we conduct a statistical analysis of global bioretention literature published during 2007-2021 using the Web of Science core database and the data visualization and analysis software VOSviewer and HistCite. The number of published articles related to bioretention facilities shows a rising trend over the study period, with research from China contributing greatly to global research on bioretention facilities. However, the influence of articles needs to be increased. Recent studies mainly focus on the hydrologic effect and water purification effect of bioretention facilities and on the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients from runoff rainwater. Further studies should focus on the interaction of fillers, microorganisms, and plants in bioretention facilities and its impact on the migration, transformation, and concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus; the purification effect and mechanism of specific emerging contaminants in runoff; the selection and configuration optimization of filler materials and plant species; and the optimization of the design parameters of the model for bioretention systems.

Performance of two interferon-gamma release assays for tuberculosis infection screening in Kawasaki children before immunosuppressive therapy

Objective

We aimed to compare QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-GIT) and X.DOT-TB for screening latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in kawasaki patients, and to identify the risk factors associated with indeterminate IGRA results.

Methods

We conducted a retrospective study on children with KD, who were screened for mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection by either ELISA-based QFT-GIT or ELISPOT-based X.DOT-TB tests, admitted in Department of Cardiology, Beijing Children's Hospital from July 2019 to April 2022.

Results

A total of 1327 cases were included. Among them, 932 cases were tested by QFT-GIT and 395 cases by X.DOT-TB. The positive rate of children was 0.1% and 0.2%, and the indeterminate rate was 68.2% and 6.1% for QFT-GIT and X.DOT-TB, respectively. Patients with hypoproteinemia had a higher risk of indeterminate X.DOT-TB result. Female, critical ill, shock or hypoproteinemia presented statistically significant associations with an increased risk of indeterminate QFT-GIT result. High-dose of IVIG inhibited the release of IFN-γ by more than 90%, which might account for the high indeterminate incidence.

Conclusion

It is recommended to perform X.DOT-TB rather than QFT-GIT to screen LTBI in patients with high level of the mitogen that can inhibit IFN-γ release. For KD children with positive IGRA results, it has a higher risk of activation TB infection when treated with immunosuppressive therapy in the future. Children with KD aged <5 years old had higher frequency of indeterminate IGRA results.

The thioesterase APT1 is a bidirectional-adjustment redox sensor

The adjustment of cellular redox homeostasis is essential in when responding to environmental perturbations, and the mechanism by which cells distinguish between normal and oxidized states through sensors is also important. In this study, we found that acyl-protein thioesterase 1 (APT1) is a redox sensor. Under normal physiological conditions, APT1 exists as a monomer through S-glutathionylation at C20, C22 and C37, which inhibits its enzymatic activity. Under oxidative conditions, APT1 senses the oxidative signal and is tetramerized, which makes it functional. Tetrameric APT1 depalmitoylates S-acetylated NAC (NACsa), and NACsa relocates to the nucleus, increases the cellular glutathione/oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) ratio through the upregulation of glyoxalase I expression, and resists oxidative stress. When oxidative stress is alleviated, APT1 is found in monomeric form. Here, we describe a mechanism through which APT1 mediates a fine-tuned and balanced intracellular redox system in plant defence responses to biotic and abiotic stresses and provide insights into the design of stress-resistant crops.

Discovering pathway biomarkers of hepatocellular carcinoma occurrence and development by dynamic network entropy analysis

OBJECTIVE

Gene expression profiling techniques measure the transcription of thousands of genes in a parallel manner. With more and more hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) transcriptomic data becoming available, the high-throughput data provides an unprecedented opportunity to discover HCC diagnostic biomarkers. In this work, we propose a bioinformatics method based on dynamic network entropy analysis, called DNEA, to identify potential pathway biomarkers for HCC occurrence and development by integrating transcriptome and interactome.

METHODS

We firstly collect the pathways documented in different knowledge-bases and then impose the genome-wide human transcriptomic data of multistage cancerous tissues during the development and progression of HCC. After linking the gene sets of pathways into individual connected networks, we map the corresponding gene expression information onto these pathways. The dynamic network entropy of individual pathways is calculated to evaluate its activities and dysfunctionalities during the disease occurrence and development. We use the overall significant difference in the entropic dynamics during the time course to prioritize distinctive pathways during disease progression. Then machine learning classification methods are employed to screen out pathway biomarkers with the classification ability to distinguish different-stage samples of HCC progression.

RESULTS

Pathway biomarkers discovered based on DNEA demonstrate good classification performance in measuring HCC progression. The classification accuracy is as follows: DNA replication pathway (mean AUC= 0.82, 20 genes) from KEGG, FMLP pathway (mean AUC=0.84, 14 genes) from BioCarta, and downstream signaling of activated FGFR pathway (mean AUC =0.80, 15 genes) from Reactome. At the same time, previous studies have shown that these genes and pathways screened are closely related to the occurrence and development of HCC in terms of oncogenesis dysfunctions.

CONCLUSIONS

Our method for cancer biomarker discovery based on dynamic network entropy analysis is effective and efficient in identifying pathway biomarkers related to the progression of complex diseases.

[The distribution of blood pressure and associated factors of the elderly with type 2 diabetes in Jiangsu Province]

Objective: To investigate the distribution of blood pressure and analyze the associated factors of blood pressure of the elderly with type 2 diabetes in Jiangsu Province. Methods: The elderly over 60 years old participants with type 2 diabetes in the communities of Huai'an City and Changshu City, Jiangsu Province were selected in this study. They were divided into two groups: taking antihypertensive drugs and not taking antihypertensive drugs. The demographic characteristics, such as age and sex, and relevant factors were collected by questionnaire. The systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were measured by physical examination. The percentile of SBP and DBP in each age group of men and women were described. The kernel density estimation curve was used to show the blood pressure distribution. The trend of blood pressure with age was fitted by locally weighted regression. The logistic regression model was used to analyze relevant factors of blood pressure. Results: A total of 12 949 participants were included in this study, including 7 775 patients in the antihypertensive drug group and 5 174 patients in the group without antihypertensive drugs. The SBP of participants was concentrated at 140-160 mmHg, and their DBP was concentrated at 75-85 mmHg. There were significant differences in the distribution of blood pressure among the subgroups of body mass index (BMI) and rural areas whether taking antihypertensive drugs and not. For participants aged under 80 years old, the SBP showed an increasing trend with age and the DBP showed a decreasing trend with age. Age, BMI ≥24 kg/m², fasting blood glucose ≥7.0 mmol/L, living in rural areas and no smoking were influencing factors of the elevated SBP; BMI ≥24 kg/m², male, living in rural areas, no smoking, drinking alcohol and not receiving drug hypoglycemic treatment were influencing factors of the elevated DBP. Conclusion: The SBP of older diabetic adults in Jiangsu Province is at a high level, and the distribution of blood pressure is significantly different between men and women in taking antihypertensive drugs group. The SBP presents a rising trend and the DBP is decreasing at the age of 60-80 years. The blood pressure level of this population are mainly affected by age, BMI, urban and rural areas, smoking.

Simulation and Experiment on the Low-Velocity Impact Response of Flax Fabric Reinforced Composites

Natural fiber reinforced composites are increasingly used to fabricate structural components prone to suffering low-velocity impacts. The low-velocity impact response of flax fabric reinforced composites under different impact energies is experimentally studied and numerically simulated. A multi-scale finite element analysis strategy for the progressive damage prediction of flax fabric reinforced composites is developed. Micro- and meso-scale analyses are conducted to predict the effective properties of the woven unit cell. Macro-scale analysis is carried out subsequently to predict the impact response of composite laminates using the results of micro- and meso-scale analyses as inputs. Simulation results and experimental results both show that most of the impact energy is absorbed by the specimens when the impact energy is lower than 4 J, and the absorption ratio of impact energy slightly increases with the increase in impact energy. On the contrary, a dramatic decrease occurs in the absorption ratio when the impact energy is 6 J, due to the severe damage to the specimen. In addition, simulation results indicate that matrix shear damage and interlaminar damage are the primary failure modes of composites under high impact energy. The numerical results of impact force, absorbed energy, and damage morphologies on both sides for all specimens show good agreement with the experimental results.

Development of lung segmentation method in x-ray images of children based on TransResUNet

Background

Chest x-ray (CXR) is widely applied for the detection and diagnosis of children's lung diseases. Lung field segmentation in digital CXR images is a key section of many computer-aided diagnosis systems.

Objective

In this study, we propose a method based on deep learning to improve the lung segmentation quality and accuracy of children's multi-center CXR images.

Methods

The novelty of the proposed method is the combination of merits of TransUNet and ResUNet. The former can provide a self-attention module improving the feature learning ability of the model, while the latter can avoid the problem of network degradation.

Results

Applied on the test set containing multi-center data, our model achieved a Dice score of 0.9822.

Conclusions

This novel lung segmentation method proposed in this work based on TransResUNet is better than other existing medical image segmentation networks.

Self-assembly Mechanism and Chiral Transfer in CuO Superstructures

Chiral inorganic superstructures have received considerable interest due to the chiral communication between inorganic compounds and chiral organic additives. However, the demanding fabrication and complex multilevel structure seriously hinder the understanding of chiral transfer and self-assembly mechanisms. Herein, we use chiral CuO superstructures as a model system to study the formation process of hierarchical chiral structures. Based on a simple and mild synthesis route, the time-resolved morphology and the in-situ chirality evolution could be easily followed. The morphology evolution of the chiral superstructure involves hierarchical assembly, including primary nanoparticles, intermediate bundles, and superstructure at different growth stages. Successive redshifts and enhancements of the CD signal support chiral transfer from the surface penicillamine ligands to the inorganic superstructure. Full-field electro-dynamical simulations reproduced the structural chirality and allowed us to predict its modulation. This work opens the door to a large family of chiral inorganic materials where chiral molecule-guided self-assembly can be specifically designed to follow a bottom-up chiral transfer pathway.

Tailoring Conversion-Reaction-Induced Alloy Interlayer for Dendrite-Free Sulfide-Based All-Solid-State Lithium-Metal Battery

Utilization of lithium (Li) metal anodes in all-solid-state batteries employing sulfide solid electrolytes is hindered by diffusion-related dendrite growth at high rates of charge. Engineering ex-situ Li-intermetallic interlayers derived from a facile solution-based conversion-alloy reaction is attractive for bypassing the Li0 self-diffusion restriction. However, no correlation is established between the properties of conversion-reaction-induced (CRI) interlayers and the deposition behavior of Li0 in all-solid-state lithium-metal batteries (ASSLBs). Herein, using a control set of electrochemical characterization experiments with LixAgy as the interlayer in different battery chemistries, this work identifies that dendritic tolerance in ASSLBs is susceptible to the surface roughness and electronic conductivity of the CRI-alloy interlayer. This work thereby tailors the CRI-alloy interlayer from the typical mosaic structure to a hierarchical gradient structure by adjusting the pit corrosion kinetics from the (de)solvation mechanism to an adsorption model, yielding a smooth organic-rich outer layer and a composition-regulated inorganic-rich inner layer composed mainly of lithiophilic LixAgy and electron-insulating LiF. Ultimately, desirable roughness, conductivity, and diffusivity are integrated simultaneously into the tailored CRI-alloy interlayer, resulting in dendrite-free and dense Li deposition beneath the interlayer capable of improving battery cycling stability. This work provides a rational protocol for the CRI-alloy interlayer specialized for ASSLBs.

Construction and Performance Evaluation of Nicandra physalodes (Linn.) Gaertn. Polysaccharide-Based Nanogel

The nanogels made from these polysaccharides and their derivatives are often used to construct drug delivery systems owing to their biocompatible, biodegradable, non-toxic, water-soluble, and bioactive characteristics. In this work, a novel pectin with unique gelling properties was extracted from the seed of Nicandra physalodes (NPGP). The structural research indicated that NPGP was a low methoxyl pectin with a high content of galacturonic acid. NPGP-based nanogels (NGs) were accomplished employing the water in oil (W/O) nano-emulsion method. The cysteamine containing reduction-responsive bond and integrin-targeting RGD peptide were also grafted onto NPGP. The anti-tumor drug doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) was loaded during the formation of NGs, and the performance of DOX delivery was studied. The NGs were characterized by UV-vis, DLS, TEM, FT-IR, and XPS. The results showed that the prepared NGs were nanosized (167.6 ± 53.86 nm), had excellent encapsulation efficiency (91.61 ± 0.85%), and possessed a fine drug loading capacity (8.40 ± 0.16%). The drug release experiment showed that DOX@NPGP-SS-RGD had good redox-responsive performance. Furthermore, the results of cell experiments revealed good biocompatibility of prepared NGs, along with selective absorption by HCT-116 cells through integrin receptor-mediated endocytosis to play an anti-tumor effect. These studies indicated the potential application of NPGP-based NGs as targeted drug delivery systems.

Concerned or Apathetic? Exploring online public opinions on climate change from 2008 to 2019: A Comparative study between China and other G20 countries

G20 countries, account for the majority of global carbon emissions, need to take the lead in mitigating climate change. However, there are differences in economic, political and sociocultural backgrounds amongst G20 countries, especially between China and other G20 countries. Since the implementation of climate policies largely require domestic public support, it is vital to explore similarities and differences of public opinions on climate issues between China and other G20 countries. However, little research has investigated the micro-level climate concerns from the perspective of cross-country differences. Therefore, based on big data and text mining analysis, this study crawled user-generated data on Sina Weibo (N = 271,487) and Twitter (N = 4,874,546) from 2008 to 2019 to comprehensively catalog and compare climate opinions. Results show that climate change has become a salient issue in China and other G20 countries, with climate-related surges in public opinions always occurring after major natural, social and political events. Moreover, in China, there has been a significant shift in public attention from climate impacts to climate mitigation strategies, but in other G20 countries, people are more radical by emphasizing the climate movement and calling for authoritative actions. This study provides "snapshots" of climate communication and offers a quantification-based reference for promoting climate actions and collaborative governance.

Deletion of DYRK1A Accelerates Osteoarthritis Progression Through Suppression of EGFR-ERK Signaling

Dual-specificity tyrosine phosphorylation regulated kinase 1A (DYRK1A) signaling is involved in the dynamic balance of catabolism and anabolism in articular chondrocytes. This study aimed to investigate the roles and mechanism of DYRK1A in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA). The expressions of DYRK1A and its downstream signal epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) were detected in the cartilage of adult wild-type mice with destabilized medial meniscus (DMM) and articular cartilage of patients with OA. We measured the progression of osteoarthritis in chondrocyte-specific knockout DYRK1A(DYRK1A-cKO) mice after DMM surgery. Knee cartilage was histologically scored and assessed the effects of DYRK1A deletion on chondrocyte catabolism and anabolism. The effect of inhibiting EGFR signaling in chondrocytes from DYRK1A-cKO mice was analyzed. Trauma-induced OA mice and OA patients showed downregulation of DYRK1A and EGFR signaling pathways. Conditional DYRK1A deletion aggravates DMM-induced cartilage degeneration, reduces the thickness of the superficial cartilage, and increases the number of hypertrophic chondrocytes. The expression of collagen type II, p-ERK, and aggrecan was also downregulated, and the expression of collagen type X was upregulated in the articular cartilage of these mice. Our findings suggest that DYRK1A delays the progression of knee osteoarthritis in mice, at least in part, by maintaining EGFR-ERK signaling in articular chondrocytes.

Speaking in the presence of noise: Consistency of acoustic properties in clear-Lombard speech over time

Individual speakers are often able to modify their speech to facilitate communication in challenging conditions, such as speaking in a noisy environment. Such vocal "enrichments" might include reductions in speech rate or increases in acoustic contrasts. However, it is unclear how consistently speakers enrich their speech over time. This study examined inter-speaker variability in the speech enrichment modifications applied by speakers. The study compared a baseline habitual speaking style to a clear-Lombard style and measured changes in acoustic differences between the two styles over sentence trials. Seventy-eight young adult participants read out sentences in the habitual and clear-Lombard speaking styles. Acoustic differences between speaking styles generally increased nonlinearly over trials, suggesting that speakers require practice before realizing their full speech enrichment potential when speaking clearly in noise with reduced auditory feedback. Using a recent objective intelligibility metric based on glimpses, the study also found that predicted intelligibility increased over trials, highlighting that communicative benefits of the clear-Lombard style are not static. These findings underline the dynamic nature of speaking styles.

Outcomes of early versus late functional weight-bearing after the acute Achilles tendon rupture repair with minimally invasive surgery: a randomized controlled trial

INTRODUCTION

Optimal postoperative rehabilitation regimen for acute Achilles tendon rupture (AATR) remains unclear. It is important to evaluate whether early functional weight-bearing rehabilitation program after minimally invasive repair results in an earlier return to pre-injury activity but increases the risk of re-rupture.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This was a prospective randomized controlled trial involving 68 AATR patients undergoing minimally invasive surgery. 34 patients were enrolled in early weight‑bearing mobilization accelerated rehabilitation group (AR group); 34 patients were enrolled in the traditional rehabilitation (TR) group. Outcomes measures included American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society Score (AOFAS) score and Achilles Tendon Total Rupture Score (ATRS) score before surgery and 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery, incidence rate of Achilles tendon re-rupture and total complications, length of hospital stay, time return to work and sports.

RESULTS

There was no significant difference in preoperative basic data between the two groups. However, AOFAS score and ATRS score were better in AR group than TR group at 3 months postoperatively (92.4 ± 3.5 vs 88.3 ± 4.5, P < 0.01; 91.1 ± 4.4 vs 88.9 ± 3.4, P = 0.03, respectively), the mean length of hospital stay (4.7 ± 1.5 vs 7.6 ± 2.0 days, P < 0.01) and time return to work (4.5 ± 1.0 vs 7.5 ± 1.6 weeks, P < 0.01) were shorter in AR group than in TR group. No statistical significance was calculated in patient-reported outcomes during the rest of the follow-up time and complications.

CONCLUSION

Early accelerated rehabilitation with weight-bearing in patients with AATR after minimally invasive surgery results in better early functional outcomes and shows similar security and feasibility.

The transdermal cream of Formestane anti-breast cancer by controlling PI3K-Akt pathway and the tumor immune microenvironment

Background

Treatment of ER+ breast cancer with intramuscular formulation of Formestane (4-OHA) shrinks the tumor within weeks. Since the tedious way of intramuscular administration and side effects are not suited for adjuvant treatment, Formestane was withdrawn from the market. A new transdermal formulation of 4-OHA cream may overcome the defects and retain the effect of shrinking the breast cancer tumor. However, the effects of 4-OHA cream on breast cancer need further confirmatory studies.

Methods

In this work, in vivo, the influence of 4-OHA cream on breast cancer was evaluated using the mode of 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) induced rat mammary cancer. We explored the common molecule mechanisms of action of 4-OHA cream and its injection formulation on breast cancer through RNA- sequencing-based transcriptome analysis and several biochemical experiments.

Results

The results showed that the cream substantially reduced the entire quantity, size, and volum of tumors in DMBA-treated rats consistent with 4-OHA injection, and indicated that there were comprehensive signals involved in 4-OHA antitumor activity, such as ECM-receptor interaction, focal adhesion, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, and proteoglycans in cancer. In addition, we observed that both 4-OHA formulations could enhance immune infiltration, especially CD8+ T cells, B cells, natural killer cells, and macrophages infiltration, in the DMBA-induced mammary tumor tissues. The antitumor effects of 4-OHA partly depended on these immune cells.

Conclusion

4-OHA cream could inhibit breast cancer growth as its injection formulation and may provide a new way for neoadjuvant treatment of ER+ breast cancer.

Strong synergy between gold nanoparticles and cobalt porphyrin induces highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

The reaction efficiency of reactants near plasmonic nanostructures can be enhanced significantly because of plasmonic effects. Herein, we propose that the catalytic activity of molecular catalysts near plasmonic nanostructures may also be enhanced dramatically. Based on this proposal, we develop a highly efficient and stable photocatalytic system for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by compositing a molecular catalyst of cobalt porphyrin together with plasmonic gold nanoparticles, around which plasmonic effects of localized electromagnetic field, local heating, and enhanced hot carrier excitation exist. After optimization, the HER rate and turn-over frequency (TOF) reach 3.21 mol g^-1 h^-1 and 4650 h^-1, respectively. In addition, the catalytic system remains stable after 45-hour catalytic cycles, and the system is catalytically stable after being illuminated for two weeks. The enhanced reaction efficiency is attributed to the excitation of localized surface plasmon resonance, particularly plasmon-generated hot carriers. These findings may pave a new and convenient way for developing plasmon-based photocatalysts with high efficiency and stability.

Evidence synthesis of Chinese medicine for monkeypox: Suggestions from other contagious pox-like viral diseases

Background: Monkeypox, a zoonotic disease caused by an Orthopoxvirus, presents an etiology similar to smallpox in humans. Currently, there are no licensed treatments for human monkeypox, so clear and urgent research on its prophylaxis and treatment is needed.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the evidence of Chinese medicine for contagious pox-like viral diseases and provide suggestions for the multi-country outbreak management of monkeypox.

Methods: The review was registered on INPLASY (INPLASY202270013). Ancient classics in China and clinical trials involving randomized controlled trials , non-RCTs, and comparative observational studies of CM on the prevention and treatment of monkeypox, smallpox, measles, varicella, and rubella were retrieved from the Chinese Medical Code (fifth edition), Database of China Ancient Medicine, PubMed, the Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chongqing VIP, Wanfang, Google Scholar, International Clinical Trial Registry Platform, and Chinese Clinical Trial Registry until 6 July 2022. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were applied to present the data collected.

Results: The use of CM to control contagious pox-like viral diseases was traced back to ancient Chinese practice cited in Huangdi’s Internal Classic, where the pathogen was recorded nearly two thousand years back. There were 85 articles (36 RCTs, eight non-RCTs, one cohort study, and 40 case series) that met the inclusion criteria, of which 39 studies were for measles, 38 for varicella, and eight for rubella. Compared with Western medicine for contagious pox-like viral diseases, CM combined with Western medicine showed significant improvements in fever clearance time (mean difference, −1.42 days; 95% CI, −1.89 to −0.95; 10 RCTs), rash/pox extinction time (MD, −1.71 days; 95% CI, −2.65 to −0.76; six RCTs), and rash/pox scab time (MD, −1.57 days; 95% CI, −1.94 to −1.19; five RCTs). When compared with Western medicine, CM alone could reduce the time of rash/pox extinction and fever clearance. Chinese herbal formulas, including modified Yinqiao powder, modified Xijiao Dihaung decoction, modified Qingjie Toubiao decoction, and modified Shengma Gegen decoction, were frequently applied to treat pox-like viral diseases and also showed significant effects in shortening the time of fever clearance, rash/pox extinction, and rash/pox scabs. Compared with Western medicine (placental globulin) or no intervention, eight non-randomized trials and observational studies on the prevention of contagious pox-like viral diseases showed a significant preventive effect of Leiji powder among high-risk populations.

Conclusion: Based on historical records and clinical studies of CM in managing contagious pox-like viral diseases, some botanical drugs could be an alternative approach for treating and preventing human monkeypox. Prospective, rigorous clinical trials are urgently needed to confirm the potential preventive and treatment effect of Chinese herbal formulas.

Accurate identification of traumatic lung injury (TLI) by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy combined with chemometrics

Traumatic lung injury (TLI), which is a common mechanical injury, is receiving increasing attention because of its serious hazards. In forensic practices, accurately identifying TLI is of great importance for investigations and case trials. The main goal of this research was to identify TLI utilizing attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy in combination with chemometrics. The macroscopic appearance of lung tissue showed that identifying TLI in lung tissue at the decomposition stage is not feasible by only visualization, and significant pulmonary hypostasis was observed in the lungs regardless of whether the lung tissue was injured. Average spectra and principal component analysis (PCA) suggested that the biochemical difference between injured lung tissue samples from the TLI group and noninjured lung tissue samples from the negative control group was mainly attributed to the different structures and contents of proteins. Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was then utilized to identify TLI with an accuracy of 96.4% and 98.6% based on the training set and the test set, respectively. Next, we focused on samples that were misclassified in the model and proposed that the misclassification could be caused by the pulmonary hypostasis effect. Therefore, two additional PCA and PLS-DA models were created to identify the pulmonary hypostatic areas between the TLI group and the negative control group and the nonpulmonary hypostatic areas between the TLI group and the negative control group. The PCA results indicated that the biochemical difference between the two groups was still associated with proteins, and the two PLS-DA models achieved 100% accuracy based on both the training and test sets. This result indicated that when pulmonary hypostasis was considered and the lung tissue was divided into pulmonary hypostatic areas and nonpulmonary hypostatic areas for separate comparisons, TLI identification was achieved with a greater accuracy than that obtained when the two areas were combined. This research confirms that the combined application of ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and chemometrics can be utilized to accurately identify TLI.

Do female officials promote local eco-innovation? The moderating role of public pressure

Based on upper echelons theory, feminist caring theory, and social role theory, we analyzed the intrinsic relationship between female officials and local eco-innovation and the moderating role of public pressure. A panel data set of 281 cities in China from 2003 to 2017 was selected as the research sample. The results showed that female municipal secretaries had a positive effect on incremental eco-innovation; female mayors had a positive effect on both radical and incremental eco-innovation; and the impact of female officials on eco-innovation varied across regions. Based on these findings, we propose that local governments should strengthen the evaluation system for officials, increase the participation rate of female officials in politics, and broaden the path of environmental monitoring for the general public.

Magnetically Assembled Ultrablack Surface with Omnidirectional and Broadband Light Absorption

Ultrablack surfaces with stable and omnidirectional light absorption over a wide spectral range are fundamentally crucial for applications concerning strict optical requirements from high-end optical to solar-heat conversion devices. Inspired by nature, we report a needle-like array structure (NAS) prepared by spraying and self-assembling the magnetic composite ink under an external magnetic field. With high structure regularity and small feature size, the NAS presents extremely low hemispherical reflectance (≤0.3%) over a wide spectral range of 300-2000 nm and stable omnidirectional absorption (incident angle insensitivity up to 70°), which could be one of the darkest surfaces ever reported. The exciting light absorption performance can be attributed to the synergistic effects of (1) structural absorption caused by multiple scattering between array units and (2) strong forward scattering and high light absorptivity of magnetic particles. The NAS exhibits outstanding photothermal conversion for solar harvesting, self-cleaning performance, good flexibility, and thermal-aging resistance, offering an appealing alternative to construct ultrablack surfaces for practical applications.

Acrylamide, acrylic acid, or 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid induced cytotoxic in Photobacterium phosphoreum, PC12, and SK-N-SH cells

In enhancing oil recovery, more and more new water-soluble polymers are developed to replace the high toxicity and low stability acrylamide (ACR) monomer. The common replacement monomer is acrylic acid (AA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), which are considered safe and efficient. In this study, AA, ACR and AMPS caused remarkable cytotoxicity in Photobacterium phosphoreum, the rat pheochromocytoma cells (PC12) and the Human neuroblastoma cells (SK-N-SH). ACR is much more lethal than AA and AMPS in PC12 and SK-N-SH cells, meanwhile, the toxicity of AA and AMPS decreases with the decrease of acid. Furthermore, similar to ACR, AA, and AMPS can induce severe DNA double-strand breakage in PC12 and SK-N-SH cells. Both AA and ACR can cause cell cycle arrest in the G0/G1 phase in PC12 and SK-N-SH cells. In addition, like ACR, AA, and AMPS can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, mitochondrial dysfunction and mitochondrial-dependent apoptosis in both PC12 and SK-N-SH cells. The acute toxicity of AA and AMPS is lower than ACR, however, the decline in acute toxicity in monomers does not mean toxic-free. We should focus on the toxicity of AA and ACR and reduce occupational contact to protect employee occupational health.

The Depletion of NAMPT Disturbs Mitochondrial Homeostasis and Causes Neuronal Degeneration in Mouse Hippocampus

Nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT) is the key enzyme in the salvaging synthesis pathway of the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD). Both NAMPT and NAD progressively decline upon aging and neurodegenerative diseases. The depletion of NAMPT induces mitochondrial dysfunction in motor neurons and causes bioenergetic stress in neurons. However, the roles of NAMPT in hippocampus neurons need to be further studied. Using floxed Nampt (Nampt^flox/flox) mice, we knocked out Nampt specifically in the hippocampus CA1 neurons by injecting rAAV-hSyn-Cre-APRE-pA. The depletion of NAMPT in hippocampus neurons induced cognitive deficiency in mice. Nevertheless, no morphological change of hippocampus neurons was observed with immunofluorescent imaging. Under the transmission electron microscope, we observed mitochondrial swollen and mitochondrial number decreasing in the cell body and the neurites of hippocampus neurons. In addition, we found the intracellular Aβ (6E10) increased in the hippocampus CA1 region. The intensity of Aβ42 remained unchanged, but it tended to aggregate. The GFAP level, an astrocyte marker, and the Iba1 level, a microglia marker, significantly increased in the mouse hippocampus. In the primary cultured rat neurons, NAMPT inhibition by FK866 decreased the NAD level of neurons at > 10^-9 M. FK866 dropped the mitochondrial membrane potential in the cell body of neurons at > 10^-9 M and in the dendrite of neurons at > 10^-8 M. FK866 decreased the number and shortened the length of branches of neurons at > 10^-7 M. Together, likely due to the injury of mitochondria, the decline of NAMPT level can be a critical risk factor for neurodegeneration.

Electrocatalytic Biomass Upgrading of Furfural using Transition-Metal Borides via Density Functional Theory Investigation

Electrocatalytic biomass upgrading has proven to be an effective technique for generating value-added products. Herein, the design and development of furfural upgrading using transition-metal borides (MBenes) with simultaneous production of hydrogen are presented. Using density functional theory, the stabilities, selectivities, and activities of 13 MBene candidates are systematically evaluated for furfural upgrading. This research suggests that Fe₂ B₂ can serve as a promising electrocatalyst for the formation of furoic acid (FAC), with a limiting potential of -0.15 V, and 5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone (HFO), with a limiting potential of -0.93 V. Furthermore, Fe₂ B₂ and Mn₂ Fe₂ are shown to exhibit favorable limiting potentials of -1.35 and -1.36 V, respectively, for producing 6-hydroxy-2.3-dihydro-6H-pyrano-3-one (HDPO), indicating that they may also serve as electrocatalysts. Based on Sabatier's principle, a descriptor (φ) of material properties is developed for screening catalysts with high catalytic activity considering the electronegativities and d-electron number of metals. Additionally, surface redox potential, electronic properties, and charge-density differences are determined for Fe₂ B₂ , which is estimated to exhibit high catalytic activity for the oxidation of furfural to FAC and HFO.

Chinese herbal medicine for drug-induced liver injury in patients with HIV/AIDS: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials

Background

To explore the effectiveness and safety of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) for drug-induced liver injury (DILI) in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Methods

A systematic search was made of eight databases (Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, Sinomed) and two trial registries (WHO ICTRP, ClinicalTrials.gov) from inception to September 2022. The effect size was presented as risk ratio (RR) or mean difference (MD) with their 95% confidence interval (CI). The Cochrane Risk of Bias and Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) tools were used for quality appraisal.

Results

Ten randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 732 participants were included. Comparing CHM alone with routine treatment, the CHM group showed lower aspartate aminotransferase (MD=-11.47 U/L, 95%CI[-13.05, -9.89], low certainty), lower alanine aminotransferase (MD=-2.68 U/L, 95%CI[-4.27, -1.08], low certainty), lower total bilirubin (MD=-4.31 mmol/L, 95%CI[-5.66, -2.96], low certainty), lower bilirubin direct (MD=-3.19 mmol/L, 95%CI[-3.87, -2.51], low certainty), and higher effective rate (assessed by symptoms and liver indicators) (RR=1.13, 95%CI[1.06, 1.20], low certainty). A significant difference was also found in CHM plus routine treatment versus routine treatment in the previous outcomes. No significant difference was found on helper T cells among these comparisons. Only one RCT reported safety of CHM and found no adverse reaction during the trial.

Conclusions

CHM may improve the liver function indices and effective rate for HIV/AIDS patients with DILI. However, the sample size was small and quality was low. Larger-samples of high-quality trials are needed.

Air pollution and human cognition: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

This systematic review summarises and evaluates the literature investigating associations between exposure to air pollution and general population cognition, which has important implications for health, social and economic inequalities, and human productivity.

METHODS

The engines MEDLINE, Embase Classic+Embase, APA PsycInfo, and SCOPUS were searched up to May 2022. Our inclusion criteria focus on the following pollutants: particulate matter, NOx, and ozone. The cognitive abilities of interest are: general/global cognition, executive function, attention, working memory, learning, memory, intelligence and IQ, reasoning, reaction times, and processing speed. The collective evidence was assessed using the NTP-OHAT framework and random-effects meta-analyses.

RESULTS

Eighty-six studies were identified, the results of which were generally supportive of associations between exposures and worsened cognition, but the literature was varied and sometimes contradictory. There was moderate certainty support for detrimental associations between PM_2.5 and general cognition in adults 40+, and PM_2.5, NOx, and PM₁₀ and executive function (especially working memory) in children. There was moderate certainty evidence against associations between ozone and general cognition in adults age 40+, and NOx and reasoning/IQ in children. Some associations were also supported by meta-analysis (N = 14 studies, all in adults aged 40+). A 1 μg/m³ increase in NO₂ was associated with reduced performance on general cognitive batteries (β = -0.02, p < 0.05) as was a 1 μg/m³ increase in PM_2.5 exposure (β = -0.02, p < 0.05). A 1μgm³ increase in PM_2.5 was significantly associated with lower verbal fluency by -0.05 words (p = 0.01) and a decrease in executive function task performance of -0.02 points (p < 0.001).

DISCUSSION

Evidence was found in support of some exposure-outcome associations, however more good quality research is required, particularly with older teenagers and young adults (14-40 years), using multi-exposure modelling, incorporating mechanistic investigation, and in South America, Africa, South Asia and Australasia.

Exfoliated 2D Layered and Nonlayered Metal Phosphorous Trichalcogenides Nanosheets as Promising Electrocatalysts for CO2 Reduction

Two-dimensional (2D) materials catalysts provide an atomic-scale view on a fascinating arena for understanding the mechanism of electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction (CO₂ ECR). Here, we successfully exfoliated both layered and nonlayered ultra-thin metal phosphorous trichalcogenides (MPCh₃ ) nanosheets via wet grinding exfoliation (WGE), and systematically investigated the mechanism of MPCh₃ as catalysts for CO₂ ECR. Unlike the layered CoPS₃ and NiPS₃ nanosheets, the active Sn atoms tend to be exposed on the surfaces of nonlayered SnPS₃ nanosheets. Correspondingly, the nonlayered SnPS₃ nanosheets exhibit clearly improved catalytic activity, showing formic acid selectivity up to 31.6 % with -7.51 mA cm^-2 at -0.65 V vs. RHE. The enhanced catalytic performance can be attributed to the formation of HCOO* via the first proton-electron pair addition on the SnPS₃ surface. These results provide a new avenue to understand the novel CO₂ ECR mechanism of Sn-based and MPCh₃ -based catalysts.

Effect of prosocial behavior on school bullying victimization among children and adolescents: Peer and student-teacher relationships as mediators

INTRODUCTION

In this study, we examined the relationship between prosocial behavior and school bullying victimization in children and adolescents. We also tested the mediating effects of peer alienation and student-teacher closeness, as well as the moderating effect of the educational stage.

METHODS

In total, 538 children and adolescents were recruited from three suburban schools in Beijing, China (252 boys, 286 girls; mean age = 12.47; 237 elementary school students, 101 middle school students, and 200 high school students). The participants were asked to complete the measures of prosocial behavior, peer alienation, and student-teacher closeness at the initial time point and reported school bullying victimization 3 months later.

RESULTS

We found that prosocial behavior was directly and negatively associated with traditional bullying victimization (i.e., physical, nonphysical, and relational); however, it had no direct association with cyberbullying victimization. Prosocial behavior was indirectly associated with school bullying victimization (except in the relational dimension) via peer alienation, but no indirect effect of student-teacher closeness was found. Besides, the associations between prosocial behavior, peer alienation, student-teacher closeness, and bullying victimization were found equally among elementary, middle, and high school students.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings suggest that prosocial behavior is an important factor associated with decreased school bullying victimization, and peer relationships play a mediating role in this association. Our study extends the current understanding of prosocial behavior primarily as a consequence of child and adolescent development to an antecedent (of school bullying victimization), which contributes to a more comprehensive view of prosocial behavior.

Modelling of daily radiofrequency electromagnetic field dose for a prospective adolescent cohort

INTRODUCTION

Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields originate from a variety of wireless communication sources operating near and far from the body, making it challenging to quantify daily absorbed dose. In the framework of the prospective cohort SCAMP (Study of Cognition, Adolescents and Mobile Phones), we aimed to characterize RF-EMF dose over a 2-year period.

METHODS

The SCAMP cohort included 6605 children from greater London, UK at baseline (age 12.1 years; 2014-2016) and 5194 at follow-up (age 14.2; 2016-2018). We estimated the daily dose of RF-EMF to eight tissues including the whole body and whole brain, using dosimetric algorithms for the specific absorption rate transfer into the body. We considered RF-EMF dose from 12 common usage scenarios such as mobile phone calls or data transmission. We evaluated the association between sociodemographic factors (gender, ethnicity, phone ownership and socio-economic status), and the dose change between baseline and follow-up.

RESULTS

Whole body dose was estimated at an average of 170 mJ/kg/day at baseline and 178 mJ/kg/day at follow-up. Among the eight tissues considered, the right temporal lobe received the highest daily dose (baseline 1150 mJ/kg/day, follow-up 1520 mJ/kg/day). Estimated daily dose [mJ/kg/day] increased between baseline and follow-up for head and brain related tissues, but remained stable for the whole body and heart. Doses estimated at baseline and follow-up showed low correlation among the 3384 children who completed both assessments. Asian ethnicity (compared to white) and owning a bar phone or no phone (as opposed to a smartphone) were associated with lower estimated whole-body and whole-brain RF-EMF dose, while black ethnicity, a moderate/low socio-economic status (compared to high), and increasing age (at baseline) were associated with higher estimated RF-EMF dose.

CONCLUSION

This study describes the first longitudinal exposure assessment for children in a critical period of development. Dose estimations will be used in further epidemiological analyses for the SCAMP study.

Visual-Olfactory Synergistic Perception Based on Dual-Focus Imaging and a Bionic Learning Architecture

The synergistic interaction of vision and olfaction is critical for both natural and artificial intelligence systems to recognize and adapt to complex environments. However, current bioinspired systems with visual and olfactory sensations are mostly assembled with separate and heterogeneous sensors, inevitably leading to bulky systems and incompatible datasets. Here, we demonstrate on-chip integration of visual and olfactory sensations through a dual-focus imaging approach. By combining lens-based visual imaging and lensless colorimetric imaging, a target object and its odor fingerprint can be captured with a single complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor imager, and the obtained multimodal images are analyzed with a bionic learning architecture for information fusion and perception. To demonstrate the capability of this system, we adapted it to food detection and achieved 100% accuracy in identifying meat freshness and category with a 10 s sampling time. In addition to the highly integrated sensor design, our approach exhibits superior accuracy and efficiency in object recognition, providing a promising approach for robotic sensing and perception.

BloodNet: An attention-based deep network for accurate, efficient, and costless bloodstain time since deposition inference

The time since deposition (TSD) of a bloodstain, i.e., the time of a bloodstain formation is an essential piece of biological evidence in crime scene investigation. The practical usage of some existing microscopic methods (e.g., spectroscopy or RNA analysis technology) is limited, as their performance strongly relies on high-end instrumentation and/or rigorous laboratory conditions. This paper presents a practically applicable deep learning-based method (i.e., BloodNet) for efficient, accurate, and costless TSD inference from a macroscopic view, i.e., by using easily accessible bloodstain photos. To this end, we established a benchmark database containing around 50,000 photos of bloodstains with varying TSDs. Capitalizing on such a large-scale database, BloodNet adopted attention mechanisms to learn from relatively high-resolution input images the localized fine-grained feature representations that were highly discriminative between different TSD periods. Also, the visual analysis of the learned deep networks based on the Smooth Grad-CAM tool demonstrated that our BloodNet can stably capture the unique local patterns of bloodstains with specific TSDs, suggesting the efficacy of the utilized attention mechanism in learning fine-grained representations for TSD inference. As a paired study for BloodNet, we further conducted a microscopic analysis using Raman spectroscopic data and a machine learning method based on Bayesian optimization. Although the experimental results show that such a new microscopic-level approach outperformed the state-of-the-art by a large margin, its inference accuracy is significantly lower than BloodNet, which further justifies the efficacy of deep learning techniques in the challenging task of bloodstain TSD inference. Comparison of Outcomes of Two Different Corticosteroid Injection Approaches for Primary Frozen Shoulder: A Randomized Controlled Study

OBJECTIVE

Corticosteroid injection is a common treatment for primary frozen shoulder, but controversy remains regarding whether different injection approaches to the glenohumeral joint have similar clinical benefits.

DESIGN

Randomized controlled clinical trial.

PATIENTS

A total of 60 patients with primary frozen shoulder were divided randomly into either anterior or posterior approach groups.

METHODS

Both groups received a 5-mL drug injection, including 1 mL 40 mg/mL triamcinolone acetonide and 4 mL 2% lidocaine. Follow-up time-points were 4, 8 and 12 weeks post-injection. Outcome measures included visual analogue scale score, Constant-Murley score, and passive range of motion of the shoulder joint.

RESULTS

All outcome measures improved over the follow-up period compared with those of previous follow-up time-points within the groups. The primary finding was that the visual analogue scale score in the anterior group was better than that in the posterior group at each follow-up time-point (all p < 0.05). In addition, improvement in function score and external rotation was faster and significant in the anterior group in the early stages (p = 0.02).

CONCLUSION

The anterior approach achieves more satisfactory results in pain control and offers better recovery of functional activity than posterior approach in the early period for primary frozen shoulder.
