Identification of air pollutant sampling period using horizontal dilution potential

A new model is proposed for estimating horizontal dilution potential of an area using wind data. The mean wind speed and wind direction variation are used as a measure of linear and angular spread of pollutant in the atmosphere. The methodology is applied to monitored hourly wind data for each month of 1 year for wind data collected at Vadodara, Gujarat and monthly dilution potential is estimated. It is found that there is a gradual variation of horizontal dilution potential over a year with limited dilution during post monsoon period i.e., October and November and a high dilution in pre monsoon period i.e., May and June. This information can be used to design air quality sampling network and duration of sampling for source apportionment study. Air pollutant sampling during high dilution period can be carried out for identifying urban and rural dust and wind blown dust from mining activity. Air pollutant sampling during low dilution period can be carried out for capturing large amount of particulate matter from anthropogenic sources like elevated stack of furnace.

A preliminary operational classification system for nonmutagenic modes of action for carcinogenesis

This article proposes a system of categories for nonmutagenic modes of action for carcinogenesis. The classification is of modes of action rather than individual carcinogens, because the same compound can affect carcinogenesis in more than one way. Basically, we categorize modes of action as: (1) co-initiation (facilitating the original mutagenic changes in stem and progenitor cells that start the cancer process) (e.g. induction of activating enzymes for other carcinogens); (2) promotion (enhancing the relative growth vs differentiation/death of initiated clones (e.g. inhibition of growth-suppressing cell-cell communication); (3) progression (enhancing the growth, malignancy, or spread of already developed tumors) (e.g. suppression of immune surveillance, hormonally mediated growth stimulation for tumors with appropriate receptors by estrogens); and (4) multiphase (e.g., "epigenetic" silencing of tumor suppressor genes). A priori, agents that act at relatively early stages in the process are expected to manifest greater relative susceptibility in early life, whereas agents that act via later stage modes will tend to show greater susceptibility for exposures later in life.

Gender-related differences in quality of life domains of persons living with HIV/AIDS in South India in the era prior to greater access to antiretroviral therapy

This study sought to examine gender-based differences in the quality of life of men and women living with HIV in South India in the era prior to greater access to antiretroviral therapy. The participants in this prospective longitudinal study consisted of 215 men and 141 women who were administered a quality of life (QOL) instrument comprising five scales: physical well-being, psychosocial well-being, sexual well-being, satisfaction with health care, and strength of partner relationship. Interviews were conducted at enrollment and at 6 months in clinical care. Men and women reported similar scores in physical well-being, satisfaction with health care, and relationship with partner from the period prior to care, at enrollment, and at 6 months. Women scored significantly lower than men in psychosocial well-being from the period prior to care, at enrollment, and at 6 months (p < 0.05); women reported significantly higher levels of partner satisfaction at 6 months (p < 0.05). In light of the increasing feminization of the HIV epidemic in India, greater emphasis should be placed on examining the long-term experiences of Indian women living with HIV/AIDS, particularly their psychosocial well-being.

Locating air quality monitoring station using wind impact area diagram

In this study a new methodology is suggested to approximate the impact area downwind of an air pollution source, where air quality monitoring can be carried out to capture the maximum pollutant concentration. Hourly wind speed for a given month is grouped in to different wind speed ranges and the distance of pollutant travel is approximated from the average wind speed of that wind speed range. Since change in wind direction causes the impact distance to rotate, its rotation is approximated by the SD of wind direction change. Using this approach, area or region down wind of a source is determined and plotted. The pattern of monthly change of wind is better represented by the new type of diagram as compared to the wind rose diagram.

Use of wind data for estimating horizontal dilution potential of atmosphere

In this study, a new methodology is suggested for estimating horizontal dilution potential of an area using wind data. The mean wind speed and wind direction variation are used as a measure of linear and angular spread of pollutants in the atmosphere. A formula is developed for estimating the potential of horizontal spread of pollutants in an area wherein only the wind speed and direction are used. The methodology is further applied to monitor wind data of one year. It is found that there is a very smooth variation of horizontal dilution potential over a year with limited dilution during post monsoon period and a high dilution in pre monsoon period.

Mapping QTLs for popping ability in a popcorn x flint corn cross

Popping expansion volume (PEV) in popcorn (Zea mays L.) is a distinct heritable character and defined as the ratio of the volume after popping to the volume before popping. PEV is quantitatively inherited and 3-4 genes/quantitative trait loci (QTLs) have been implicated. In the present study, we have dissected the quantitative PEV into two component traits, viz., flake volume (FV) and percent unpopped kernels (UPK), and mapped QTLs using SSR markers for all three traits with 194 F3 families derived from a popcorn (A-1-6) x flint corn (V273) cross. Heritability (broad sense) estimates for PEV, FV and UPK based on F3 mean bases were 0.72, 0.54 and 0.68, respectively. The QTL analyses for the three traits based on combined environment data were performed by composite interval mapping using QTL cartographer. Four QTLs were identified for PEV on chromosomes 1, 3, 8 and 10, which together explained 62% of the phenotypic variance (sigma2p). Four QTLs were found on chromosomes 1, 5, 9 and 10 for FV (explaining 44% of sigma2p) and five QTLs for UPK on chromosomes 1, 3, 4, 5 and 9 (explaining 57% of sigma2p). The relative efficiency estimates of marker-based selection in comparison to phenotypic selection for PEV (1.10), FV (1.22) and UPK (1.11) indicated that marker-based selection could be relatively more efficient. The QTL on chromosome 1S for PEV was found to be most significant, where QTLs for hard endosperm starch concentration had been detected earlier.

Topical lignocaine for vaginismus: a case report

Vaginismus is a sexual dysfunction in which spasm of vaginal musculature precludes penetrative intercourse. In many cases associated pain or fear of pain may contribute to the maintenance of vaginismus. We report a case of primary vaginismus with associated pain that benefited from topical application of lignocaine gel along with systematic desensitization resulting in successful consummation, and suggest that it may be a useful adjunct during finger dilatation in the treatment of vaginismus, specifically in patients who have associated pain or areas of hyperesthesia in the introitus.

235 THE INVESTIGATION OF mRNA EXPRESSION OF SEVERAL CHROMATIN REMODELLING GENES DURING BOVINE PREIMPLANTATION DEVELOPMENT

The efficiency of obtaining live calves from somatic cell nuclear transfer remains quite low. One factor implicated in this failure is inadequate chromatin remodelling of the donor nucleus. Five Polycomb group (PcG) genes were investigated as potential remodelling factors in bovine oocytes and preimplantation embryos. These genes (Cbx6, Eed, Edr1, Yy1, and Zfp144) are involved in transcriptional activation and cell cycle regulation. We hypothesize that inadequate expression may cause the developmental abnormalities seen following cloning. This study is aimed at characterizing normal expression, prior to comparative studies with cloned embryos. Three single abattoir-derived in vitro-matured (IVM) oocytes or in vitro-produced (IVP) embryos from each of the following stages: 2-cell, 4-cell, 8-cell, 16–32 cell, morula, Day 7 blastocyst, and Day 8 hatched blastocyst, were studied. Messenger RNA was isolated from individual samples with Dynabeads (Dynal, Inc., Lake Success, NY, USA) and then cDNA was created and amplified with a SMART cDNA synthesis kit (BD Biosciences Clontech, Palo Alto, CA, USA). Products were diluted 1:10 and used to amplify target genes by PCR. PCR products were sequenced for confirmation of identity. All amplified embryo samples expressed the housekeeping genes Poly(A) polymerase and actin. Similarly, all embryos up to the 8-cell stage expressed GDF9, an oocyte-specific gene, while IFN-tau, involved in maternal recognition of pregnancy, was expressed in one morula and all blastocyst samples. Cbx6 was not expressed at any stage. The other four genes were all expressed fairly consistently throughout the pre-implantation period. Eed transcript was detected in all samples, with the exception of one oocyte, one 4-cell embryo, and one 8-cell embryo. Edr1 transcript was detected in all samples except for two oocytes, one 16–32-cell embryo, and one Day 7 blastocyst. Yy1 was expressed in all but one oocyte, one 2-cell embryo, two 4-cell embryos, and one Day 7 blastocyst. Finally, Zfp144 transcript was detected in one oocyte and in all embryos until the 16–32 stage, and then was not detected until seen in one Day 7 and all Day 8 blastocysts. Cbx6, yet to be fully characterized in any species, is also known as the neuronal pentraxin receptor, and is involved in transport and clearance of synaptic debris. It is known to have the characteristic chromobox domain of the Cbx family, of which several family members play a role during pre-implantation development. Eed, Edr1, Yy1, and Zfp144 are expressed throughout the pre-implantation period, although levels of Zfp144 mRNA appear to drop during the embryonic genome activation and then reappear by the late blastocyst stage. This consistent expression may suggest a role for the proteins in chromatin remodelling or modulating patterns of gene expression in early development. Further studies are required to determine if these factors are expressed incorrectly in cloned embryos, potentially providing a link to the abnormalities observed post nuclear transfer.

Fenvalerate-induced macromolecular changes in the catfish, Clarias batrachus

The effects of sublethal concentration of fenvalerate on DNA, RNA, RNA/DNA ratio and protein contents were estimated in gill and kidney tissues of an air breathing fish, Clarias batrachus. Fenvalerate reduced the DNA content in gill, whereas it did not produce any significant effect on DNA in kidney. This tissue-specific change in DNA content may be due to differential effects of fenvalerate or its metabolite(s) on synthesis and/degradation of DNA in gill and kidney cells of the fish. RNA and protein contents declined substantially in both the tissues in response to fenvalerate treatment. However, RNA/DNA ratio remains unchanged. It indicates that decrease in protein content in response to fenvalerate treatment might have been brought about by reduce rate of translation of messenger (mRNA) without a decrease in concentration of ribosomes.

Decolorization of synthetic textile dyes by lignin peroxidase of Phanerochaete chrysosporium

Neem hull waste (containing a high amount of lignin and other phenolic compounds) was used for lignin peroxidase production by Phanerochaete chrysosporum under solid-state fermentation conditions. Maximum decolorization achieved by partially purified lignin peroxidase was 80% for Porocion Brilliant Blue HGR, 83 for Ranocid Fast Blue, 70 for Acid Red 119 and 61 for Navidol Fast Black MSRL. The effects of different concentrations of veratryl alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, enzyme and dye on the efficiency of decolorization have been investigated. Maximum decolorization efficiency was observed at 0.2 and 0.4 mmol/L hydrogen peroxide, 2.5 mmol/L veratryl alcohol and pH 5.0 after a 1-h reaction, using 50 ppm of dyes and 9.96 mkat/L of enzyme.

Occurrence of a Reovirus Infecting Maize in India

During the 1998-99 season, maize plants showing viruslike symptoms were observed at two locations in the Andhra Pradesh state in Southern India. Several hybrids were evaluated at Hyderabad in a replicated yield trial and most were affected, with disease incidence ranging from 4.4 to 61.8% of the plants among plots. Hybrid 4642 (Proagro 3-way hybrid, late maturity) and the pre-commercial hybrid YLY102 were the most susceptible, whereas the popular hybrid 4640 was among the least susceptible entries. In seed production fields near Eluru, incidence ranged from 10 to 15% among plots, with the female parent of hybrid 4210 (Proagro 3-way hybrid, early maturity) being especially affected. Symptoms observed in hybrids varied, presumably, according to the infection time and included severe plant dwarfing, dark-green leaves, enations on the lower leaf surface, and small malformed ears with few or no kernels. Symptomatic and asymptomatic field plants (root and leaf tissues) were tested by ds-RNA polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and by double-antibody sandwich enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-ELISA) with antiserum to Mal de río cuarto virus (MRCV), a Reoviridae-Fijivirus member. MRCV and Maize rough dwarf virus (MRDV) were selected as controls because the symptoms were similar to those caused by these maize viruses (1,2). ds-RNA gels from symptomatic plants showed 10 bands with banding patterns different from those of MRCV or MRDV. DAS-ELISA indicated a distant relationship to MRCV. These results provide evidence of a reovirus infection to maize hybrids in India and suggest that a virus belonging to the family Reoviridae, genus Fijivirus is causing this new disease. The high disease incidence and the severity of symptoms should alert breeders and pathologists in southern Asia about potential yield losses. References: (1) G. Boccardo and R. G. Milne. 1984. Insulin-Like growth factor I (IGF-I) and cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate regulate IGF-binding protein-3 gene expression by transcriptional and posttranscriptional mechanisms in mammary epithelial cells

Insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) is a potent mitogen for both normal and transformed mammary epithelial cells (MEC), and IGF-binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) potentiates IGF-I action in these cells. The synthesis of IGFBP-3 is stimulated by both IGF-I and agents that increase intracellular cAMP (e.g. forskolin) in the bovine MEC line MAC-T. In addition, the combination of IGF-I and cAMP increases IGFBP-3 messenger RNA to a greater extent than does either treatment alone. The molecular mechanisms responsible for this regulation are not known and therefore represent the focus of this study. The half-life of IGFBP-3 messenger RNA in untreated MAC-T cells was determined to be 11 h. Exposure to IGF-I or forskolin increased the half-life to 27 and 101 h, respectively. Nuclear run-on assays indicated that IGFBP-3 transcription rates were increased 3.5 +/- 0.83-fold (n = 4) in cells treated with a combination of IGF-I and forskolin. To further study this regulation, 1.1 kb of the 5'-flanking region of the IGFBP-3 promoter were fused to a promoterless reporter plasmid encoding luciferase. Transient transfection assays indicated that both IGF-I and forskolin alone produced small, but significant, increases in IGFBP-3 promoter activity of 1.57 +/- 0.12 and 1.59 +/- 0.08-fold (P < 0.01), respectively (mean +/- SE; n = 7). However, the combination of IGF-I and forskolin increased IGFBP-3 promoter activity 2.25 +/- 0.14-fold above control values (P < 0.01), suggesting that these factors activate discrete signaling pathways that act in concert to stimulate IGFBP-3 gene transcription. Deletion analysis indicated that promoter fragments containing as little as 267 bp upstream of the TATA box retained responsiveness to IGF-I and forskolin. This region contains a 200-bp sequence that is approximately 80% homologous between the murine and bovine promoters. It contains several conserved AP-2 and Sp1 consensus binding sequences that may be important for the effects of IGF-I and forskolin on IGFBP-3 promoter activity. In summary, these data indicate that IGF-I and cAMP, working through separate signaling pathways, activate both transcriptional and post-transcriptional mechanisms to stimulate IGFBP-3 synthesis in MEC.

Laboratory diagnosis of anaerobic pleuropulmonary infections

Anaerobic organisms play a major role in pleuropulmonary infections. Clinical manifestations range from simple aspiration to acute, severe, necrotizing pneumonias to chronic infections, such as lung abscess and empyema. Implicated pathogens are usually of endogenous origin. Laboratory diagnosis of anaerobic pleuropulmonary infections is based on recovering the etiological agent from clinical specimens. Appropriate specimens include pleuml fluid, transtracheal aspirates, transthoracic aspirates and fiberoptic bronchoscopic aspirates. Collection and transport of uncontaminated specimens is crucial to the recovery of the causative agents. Evaluation of a Gram's stain of clinical material provides a guide to initial therapy. Pigmented and non-pigmented Prevotella species, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Peptostreptococcus species, and Bacteriodes species are the most commonly recovered anaerobes in pleuropulmonary infections. Successful treatment of anaerobic pleuropulmonary infections requires a combination of antibiotic therapy and surgical interventions. Routine susceptibility testing of recovered isolates is rarely warranted.

Post harvest physiconutritional changes in Kagzi limes (Citrus aurantifolia Swingle) treated with selected oil emulsions and diphenyl

Influence of oil emulsions and diphenyl on post-harvest physiconutritional changes in Kagzi limes (Citrus aurantifolia) was studied. During twelve days of storage, physiological loss in weight (PLW) and rotting were at a minimum in fruits treated with Neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss.) oil plus diphenyl; juice content was at a maximum in mustard oil + diphenyl treated fruits. With the advancement of storage period, total soluble solids were increased while ascorbic acid and acidity of fruits decreased. Mustard oil plus diphenyl supported maximum ascorbic acid (25.60 mg/100 ml juice) and minimum total soluble solids (9.03%).

Non-surgical mitral commissurotomy using metallic commissurotome

Percutaneous transatrial mitral commissurotomy using a new miniaturised metallic commissurotome mounted on a 12 F catheter was done in 24 patients with severe mitral stenosis. There were 17 (70.8%) females and seven (29.2%) males with age ranging from 12-42 years (mean 26.0 +/- 6.7 years). Atrial fibrillation was present in three (12.5%) patients. Three (12.5%) patients had restenosis following closed mitral commissurotomy. The mitral valve score on echocardiography ranged from 6 to 10 (mean 7 +/- 1.3). The procedure was performed with one device which was reused after sterilisation with glutaraldehyde. The device was opened maximally upto 39.0 +/- 1.7 mm (range 35-40 mm). The procedure was successful in 23 (95.8%) patients. The mean left atrial pressure decreased from 26.8 +/- 8.0 to 9.3 +/- 7.1 mm Hg (p < 0.001). There was a fall of mean pulmonary artery pressure from 47.2 +/- 18.6 (range 20-29 mm Hg) to 23.6 +/- 9.6 mm Hg (range 12-51 mm Hg) (p < 0.001). The mitral valve area as assessed by Doppler echocardiography (pressure half time) increased from 0.9 +/- 0.1 (range 0.6-1.2 cm2) to 2.1 +/- 0.4 cm2 (range 1.6-2.6 cm2) (p < 0.001), with split in both commissures in 22 (95.6%) cases. One patient developed severe mitral regurgitation with tear in the anterior mitral leaflet needing immediate mitral valve replacement. One patient developed transient aphasia which recovered completely within four hours. Percutaneous transatrial mitral commissurotomy using metallic commissurotome offers reliable and effective alternative to balloon mitral commissurotomy and may be more cost-effective because of its reusability.

A decade of subclavian angioplasty: aortoarteritis versus atherosclerosis

The therapeutic outcome of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) for subclavian steno-occlusive disease performed over the last 10 years was assessed in 60 consecutive patients of aortoarteritis (n = 35) and atherosclerosis (n = 25). Sixty lesions were stenotic and 6 short segment total occlusions. Twenty-five lesions were prevertebral and 41 postvertebral. PTA was successful in 56 (primary success rate 93.3%) stenotic lesions and 3 (50%) total occlusions. In comparison to atherosclerosis, patients with aortoarteritis were younger (27.7 +/- 9.1 versus 54.7 +/- 10.7 years; p < 0.001), more often female (75% versus 20%; p < 0.001), gangrene was uncommon (0% versus 16%; p < 0.05) and diffuse involvement was more often seen (42.9% versus 4.0%; p < 0.001). The luminal diameter stenosis was similar before PTA (88.6 +/- 9.7% versus 89.0 +/- 9.1%; p = NS); however, aortoarteritis group had more residual stenosis (15.7 +/- 12.5% versus 8.3 +/- 9.6%; p < 0.05) after PTA. Higher balloon inflation pressure was required to dilate the lesions of aortoarteritis (9.9 +/- 4.6 versus 5.5 +/- 1.0 atm; p < 0.001). Three (5%) patients had complications which could be effectively managed nonsurgically. There were no neurological sequelae, even in PTA of prevertebral lesions. On clinical follow-up over a period of 4-120 (43.7 +/- 29.6) months in 45 of the 60 (75%) patients, higher restenosis rate (20.8% versus 4.8%; p = NS) was observed in aortoarteritis group, particularly in those patients with diffuse arterial narrowing. These lesions could be effectively redilated. Successful PTA resulted in marked improvement in symptoms on long-term follow-up. In conclusion, subclavian PTA is safe and can be as effectively performed in aortoarteritis as in atherosclerosis with good long-term results.

Ochrobactrum anthropi meningitis in pediatric pericardial allograft transplant recipients

An epidemiologic investigation was done after 3 patients contracted Ochrobactrum anthropi meningitis at one hospital in October 1994. Neurosurgical patients with pericardial tissue implants were at greater risk of infection than other neurosurgical patients (3/14 vs. 0/566; P<.001). Cultures of implants removed from 2 case-patients, an implant at implantation, a nonimplanted pericardial tissue, and an unwrapped but unopened bottle of Hank's balanced salt solution (HBSS) grew O. anthropi. Patient and tissue isolates had identical genotypes; the isolate from the HBSS bottle had a unique genotype. Culture samples from an unopened HBSS bottle and from pericardial tissue grew Pseudomonas stutzeri of the same genotype; however, no P. stutzeri infections were detected. The investigation documented intrinsic P. stutzeri contamination of HBSS. O. anthropi contamination of tissues occurred during processing, possibly due to extrinsic contamination of HBSS. Active surveillance is needed to detect infection in patients receiving transplanted tissues, and rigorous infection control practice are necessary during tissue harvesting and processing to ensure sterility.

Treatment of acquired autoimmune myasthenia gravis: a topic review

We propose a new approach to staging the disease based on clinical and immunological response to treatment. We oppose clinical remission to immunological remission and define total clinical remission as the goal of therapy. We describe the use, side effects and indications of established therapies. Acetylcholine esterase inhibitors are only a symptomatic treatment as is plasma exchange. Usefulness and limits of thymectomy, corticosteroids and immunosuppressants are described here. Their goal is to reduce the auto-immune process. Long-term hazards from these medications are described and methods to reduce their potential risks are suggested. We suggest the number of patients having life threatening complications while undergoing aggressive immunosuppression can be reduced by a systematic approach to follow-up. In the second part of this review article, adapting management to specific situations is emphasized in refractory disease, respiratory failure, neonatal and juvenile forms of the disease. The special situation of seronegative myasthenia is discussed.

Radioimmunoassay of pyridostigmine in plasma and tissues

A sensitive and specific radioimmunoassay is reported for the cholinergic agent, pyridostigmine. Antibodies were raised in rabbits against a conjugate of pyridostigmine and bovine serum albumin. The assay can detect as little as 2.5 ng/ml of drug directly in plasma and tissue homogenates. Structurally similar compounds and major metabolites are not recognized by the antibody. The specificity of the antibody has been confirmed by utilizing high pressure liquid chromatography. Plasma concentration-time profiles and tissue distribution of the drug were determined by this method in rat after intramuscular administration of pyridostigmine.

Outbreak of cholera in Berasia block of Bhopal District in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal district, Madhya Pradesh has been considered to be free of cholera. In an outbreak of gastro-enteritis in Berasia block of Bhopal district, Cholera vibrio Inaba and Ogawa were isolated from 17.64 per cent of stool samples collected. Extreme insanitary conditions, large aggregation of uncontrolled population and probably consumption of infected ice candies were responsible for the outbreak of cholera.

Effect of L-thyroxine on serum angiotensin converting enzyme activity in sheep

The effect of L-thyroxine on serum angiotensin converting enzyme activity using a sheep model was examined. Following two weeks of L-thyroxine treatment, the activity of serum angiotensin converting enzyme was increased from 6.92 U/ml to 8.65 U/ml (s.e.m. = 0.40, n = 13, P less than 0.01). Discontinuation of L-thyroxine treatment resulted in lowering the activity of serum angiotensin converting enzyme within three weeks to values close to those observed during the control period. It was concluded that L-thyroxine modulates serum angiotensin converting enzyme activity. The sheep is an appropriate animal model for the study of the factors that control serum angiotensin converting enzyme activity.

Atropine serum concentrations after multiple inhaled doses of atropine sulfate

Atropine may be given by inhalation for bronchodilation. Intravenous atropine at doses of 0.32 to 1 mg yields serum levels of 2 to 6 ng/ml, with an elimination t1/2 of about 4 hours. Efficient inhalation of large single doses leads to similar concentrations in some individuals, but under clinical conditions drug delivery may be less efficient. Of concern is accumulation of the drug in the body with multiple-dose therapy. We measured serum levels of atropine after single inhaled doses and again after 48 to 72 hours of inhalation every 4 to 6 hours in 11 subjects. The drug was administered by therapists at doses and techniques commonly used in the clinical setting. Serum concentrations of atropine were negligible after the first dose in all subjects but were detectable in six of nine subjects who received the drug for more than 48 hours. Three of the subjects had levels greater than 2 ng/ml.

Purgative and anthelmintic effects of Mallotus philippinensis in rats against tape worm

A resin isolated from Mallotus philippinensis (Kamala) caused a significant purgative effect after an oral dose (120 mg/kg) in rats as assessed from the weight of faeces as well as from the surface area of blotting paper soaked by liquid faeces. The anthelmintic effect of the resin was evaluated in albino rats found to be infested with tape worms. The resin in 60 and 120 mg/kg dose had a lethal effect on 35.69% and 78.21% population of tape worms respectively, in small intestine.

Plasma pharmacokinetics of intravenously administered atropine in normal human subjects

The pharmacokinetics of atropine (dl-hyoscyamine) was studied in six normal volunteers following a single 1-mg intravenous dose of atropine. Atropine plasma levels were collected for 24 hours and analyzed by radioimmunoassay. Pulse rates were monitored and compared with predose values in each subject. Atropine plasma concentrations were fitted by least-squares regression analysis. The observed maximal increase in pulse rate, at 12 to 16 minutes after the dose, correlated with the maximum predicted tissue levels of atropine based on the computer fit of the plasma atropine concentration-time data. No correlation between the time of maximum response and atropine plasma concentrations was observed. The average half-life of atropine was 4.125 hours. This data may be used to design a multiple-dosing regimen for intravenous atropine in patients.

Malignant histiocytoma of the rectum: report of a case

A case of malignant histiocytoma of the rectum has been described. We believe this is the first report of a case of this type. Other relevant reports are reviewed.

Massive rectal bleeding due to intestinal tuberculosis

Two cases of massive rectal bleeding due to tuberculosis of the intestine are described and 24 reported cases of massive rectal bleeding in intestinal tuberculosis are reviewed. Tuberculosis of the intestine, though uncommon should be considered as a cause for rectal bleeding.

A competitive protein binding radioassay for 17alpha-ethynylestradiol in human plasma

A competitive protein binding radioassay system using a rabbit uterine cytosol preparation for the measurement of ethynylestradiol [EE2e] in human plasma has been developed. Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography is used for the separation of the estrogens prior to assay. EE2 levels were measured in 23 normotensive subjects on contraceptive pills containing either 50 mug of EE2 or mestranol. The EE2 values ranged from 144 to 248 pg with a mean of 211 pg (S.D. +/- 37.94). The method is sensitive enough to detect 25 pg of EE2 in plasma. The intra- and inter-assay coefficients of variation were 7.54% and 10.75%, respectively. Water blanks and plasma blanks from subjects not on pills gave negligible readings for EE2.
