Abstract
Recombinant protein was produced from the cDNA library of Trichinella pseudospiralis, which seemed to form part of the excretory-secretory (ES) products. The library was constructed from cDNA of muscle larvae at 1 month post-infection, and immunoscreened with antibody against T. pseudospiralis ES products. A clone, designated Tp21-3, contained a cDNA transcript of 657 bp in length with a single open reading frame, which encoded 172 amino acids (19617 Da in the estimated molecular mass). The predicted amino acid sequence of clone Tp21-3 had a similarity of 76% to that of clone ORF 17.20 (GenBank under accession number U88239) from T. spiralis. The recombinant fusion proteins encoded by clone Tp21-3 were produced in an Escherichia coli expression system and affinity purified. On Western blotting analysis, Tp21-3 recombinant proteins migrated at 40 kDa and reacted to antibody against T. pseudospiralis ES products and T. pseudospiralis-infected sera. Sera were developed against Tp 21-3 recombinant proteins, which reacted to a single band migrating at 21 kDa in crude worm extract and ES products from T. pseudospiralis on Western blotting analysis, and reacted with stichocytes of T. pseudospiralis on immunohistochemical staining.

Abstract
Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma is the unique entity of epithelial-ectomesenchymal odontogenic tumors, which is characterized by enamel formation in addition to dentine. We examined immunohistochemically a case of this tumor in which enamel having prism structures was developed in the absence of odontoblast differentiation but was in contact with mesenchymal matrices. Histological examination showed diverse morphological features of epithelial tumor cells, e.g., cuboidal cells comprising tooth bud-like projections, ameloblast- and stellate reticulum-like cells, and residual cells in forms of extended cords or islands of odontogenic epithelium. Immunostaining with anti-amelogenin sera proved that the intracellular production of amelogenins was initiated at the tooth bud-like stage. The secreted amelogenins were detected almost exclusively in the induced enamel and dentinoid areas, as well as in the core region of cementicle-like spheres deposited in the encapsulating stroma. The results obtained indicate that the odontogenic tumor epithelia and its products, i.e., amelogenins, participate in multifaceted aspects of dental hard tissue formation that takes place during oncogenesis.

Abstract
Infection of an intracellular parasitic nematode, Trichinella spiralis, resulted in severe damage in muscle cells which was followed by activation and proliferation of satellite cells. The repairing process, shortly after the damage, histopathologically resembled those seen after mechanical injury. Resemblance was also true for kinetics of expression of myogenic regulatory factors (MyoD, myogenin and MRF4). The difference resided in the next step where the muscle cell infected with T. spiralis transformed to a unique cell which is parasitologically known as the nurse cell, and the proliferated satellite cells did not differentiate to the muscle cell but to the nurse cell (misdifferentiation). Thus the nurse cell was a fusion of the transformed infected muscle cell and misdifferentiated satellite cells. Infection with another species of Trichinella, T. pseudospiralis, also caused cell damage, but more extensively involving the entire length of the infected muscle cells because no septum was formed to minimize the affected area. Therefore, a large number of satellite cells were activated and proliferated. The myogenic regulatory factors such as MyoD and myogenin were activated for a longer period than in the case with T. spiralis infection. The infected muscle cell transformed to the nurse cell, whose cytoplasm was characterized by extensive smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Satellite cells misdifferentiated to the nurse cell, whose cytoplasm was amorphous, void of distinct cell organelles. The two kinds of cytoplasm did not fuse as examined thus far. Thus infection with T. spiralis and T. pseudospiralis caused misdifferentiation of satellite cells, but in a different way.

Abstract
To assess the efficacy of cancer chemotherapy, an important index is apoptosis of the target cells, which can usually be confirmed by electron microscopy (EM). We established a new experimental technique, whereby cancer cells (MKN45) were distributed in thin collagen gel as one or two cell layers, and cultured with anti-cancer drugs (5-FU and CDDP). The cells were stained with fluorescent Hoechst 33258 (Ho) and photographed, then with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and again photographed, and processed for EM. This approach allowed us to characterize the patterns of death of single cells in detail. There were six patterns of cell damage: two patterns of apoptosis, early peripheral condensation of chromatin and late apoptotic bodies, two patterns of necrosis, cytoplasmic swelling and washed-out images, and two further patterns, with morphological features of both apoptosis and necrosis, neither classified into necrosis nor apoptosis. The results show that cell death patterns can be mostly determined by combining observations of Ho and H&E-stained cells without the necessity for EM observation.

Abstract
We produced a recombinant protein from a cDNA library from muscle larvae of Trichinella spiralis which had proteinase inhibitory activity. The predicted amino acid sequence of the clone had an identity of only 30% to the serine proteinase inhibitors (serpins) from Caenorhabditis elegans or Brugia malayi. At the putative reactive region, however, the identity was about 50%. The recombinant protein expressed in Escherichia coli inhibited 82% of the activity of the serine proteinase (trypsin). Stage-specific expression of this protein was suggested from the following experiments. Antibody against the recombinant protein could stain proteins migrating at about 42 kDa (which is the expected size from the sequence) in crude extracts from newborn larvae and 18-day post-infection (p.i.) muscle larvae, but it failed to stain any proteins in crude extracts from 30-day p.i. muscle larvae. Production of mRNA transcript for the serpin gene was restricted largely to the newborn larvae and to 18-day p.i. muscle larvae. The antibody reacted with the stichocytes of the larvae at 18 days p.i., but did not react with the muscle larvae at 24 days and 30 days p.i.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The optimal protocol of the treatment for early gastric cancer has not been fully established. The current study was designed to elucidate the relationship between the depth of tumors with or without an ulcer and the presence of lymph node metastasis and to establish the optimal and practical therapeutic strategy for patients with early gastric cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS A retrospective analysis of 1051 patients with early gastric cancer treated by gastrectomy with D1 or D2 lymph node dissection was performed. The patients were divided into those with mucosal (M) tumors and those with submucosal (SM) tumors. These 2 groups were subclassified, depending on the coexistence of ulcer or the degree of submucosal invasion, and were characterized in relation to clinicopathologic factors and 5-year prognosis. RESULTS The incidence of lymph node metastases from SM tumors (19.8%, 85 of 430) was more frequent than that from M tumors (2.3%, 14 of 621) (P <.001). All M tumors with lymph node involvement, including tumors smaller than 1.5 cm in diameter, had ulceration or ulceration scar in the lesions. SM tumors that had invaded less than 200 microm in depth (SM1a) had significantly less lymph node involvement than those with deeper invasion. The node metastases were confined to epigastric lymph nodes (N1) in both M tumors with ulceration or ulceration scar and SM1a tumors. CONCLUSIONS All macroscopic M tumors without ulceration or ulceration scar should be considered for endoscopic mucosal resection. The need for reoperation for a formal gastrectomy with lymphadenectomy or a limited surgical operation will vary depending on the pathologic analysis of endoscopic mucosal resection specimens (depth of invasion, presence of ulceration).

Abstract
We developed a detection system for myogenic regulatory factors such as MyoD and myogenin. Adapting the method we performed a longitudinal analysis of such regulatory factors after infection with T. spiralis and T. pseudospiralis. MyoD and myogenin were expressed from the early phase of cystogenesis in T. spiralis infection. The expression returned to the normal level after 18 days from the infection when the cyst was complete. In T. pseudospiralis infection, they were also expressed from the early phase of cystogenesis, but continuously expressed at least up to 43 days post infection.

Abstract
Percutaneous microwave coagulation therapy (PMCT) has been widely used as an effective minimal invasive therapy for small liver tumors. The occurrence of a sonographic masked space due to the presence of the lung, however, has become a major obstacle to visualizing the whole tumor in the hepatic dome. To facilitate the use of PMCT for liver tumors in the hepatic dome, we developed PMCT in combination with the artificial hydrothorax method (percutaneous transdiaphragmatic MCT: PTD-MCT). Our new approach for PMCT to the hepatic tumors located in Couinaud's segments VIII or VII just under the diaphragm resulted in a successful treatment. The separation of the lung from the diaphragm by the infusion of saline into the pleural cavity enabled us not only to visualize the whole tumor in the hepatic dome to accurately target the tumor, but also helped us to avoid injuring the lung. PTD-MCT is therefore strongly recommended for the treatment of liver tumors in the hepatic dome.

Abstract
Between April 1987 and March 1996, 32 deformed hands of 31 patients with cerebral palsy were treated with combined release of the flexor digitorum profundus, flexor digitorum superficialis, and intrinsic muscles. Of these 31 patients, 26 patients (27 hands) were followed up after treatment. Improvements were evaluated by the modified classification of Zancolli et al, the classification of House et al, the object handling score, and the activity of daily living score. Improvements of more than one level on an average were observed in the modified classification of Zancolli et al and the classification of House et al. The ability to grasp, pinch, and release increased with improvement of 2.5 points in the object handling score, and activities of daily living were enhanced with improvement of 2.4 points. The fine motor skills could be facilitated, and dexterity was restored in most patients.

Abstract
Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor, initially purified from the rat glial cell line B49, has the ability to promote the survival and differentiation of various types of neurons in the central and peripheral nervous systems. In the present study, to evaluate the physiological role of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor in the central nervous system, we investigated the cellular and regional distribution of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor immunoreactivity in autopsied control human brains and spinal cords using a polyclonal glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor-specific antibody. On western blot analysis, the antibody reacted with recombinant human glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor, and recognized a single band at a molecular weight of approximately 34,000 in human brain homogenates. Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor immunoreactivity was observed mainly in the neuronal somata, dendrites and axons. In the telencephalon, diencephalon and brainstem, the cell bodies and proximal processes of several neuronal subtypes were immunostained with punctate dots. Furthermore, immunopositive nerve fibers were also observed, and numerous axons were intensely immunolabeled in the internal segment of the globus pallidus and the pars reticulata of the substantia nigra. In the cerebellum, the most conspicuous immunostaining was found in the Purkinje cells, in which the somata and dendrites were strongly immunolabeled. Intense immunoreactivity was also detected in the posterior horn of the spinal cord. In addition to the neuronal elements, immunopositive glial cell bodies and processes were observed in various regions. Our results suggest that glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor is widely localized, but can be found selectively in certain neuronal subpopulations of the human central nervous system. Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor may regulate the maintenance of neuronal functions under normal circumstances.

Abstract
A 68-year-old man with chest pain was treated under a diagnosis of angina pectoris based on coronary angiography by percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty including stent implantation performed by the femoral approach. About 1 month after intervention, his renal function deteriorated and purpura appeared on both feet, especially at the toe tips. He was treated under a tentative diagnosis of cholesterol embolism conservatively at the out-patient clinic. However, he was admitted by ambulance due to worsening renal failure 2 months later and died from multiple organ failure 2 weeks after admission. Autopsy examination identified cholesterol embolism due to crystal emboli in several organs. Cholesterol embolism rarely occurs after angiographic or interventional procedures, but is difficult to diagnose clinically and there is no established therapy. The number of intervention and angiography procedures is increasing, so the occurrence of embolism as a complication of these procedures might also increase.

Abstract
JTV-803, 4-[(2-amidino-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolin-7-yloxy)methyl]-1-(4-pyridinyl)piperidine-4-carboxylic acid monomethanesulfonate trihydrate, at > or = 0.1 mg/kg/h inhibited the increase in plasma thrombin-antithrombin III complex in response to continuous infusion of thromboplastin in rats. JTV-803 inhibited thrombus formation in an arteriovenous shunt model by intravenous infusion at > or = 0.3 mg/kg/h and prolonged the occlusion time of photochemically induced arterial thrombus in the middle cerebral artery at >1.5 mg/kg/0.5 h. Activated partial thromboplastin time was prolonged at 10 mg/kg/h. Intravenous administration of JTV-803 prolonged bleeding time at 30 mg/kg/h, a dose 10-100 times higher than the dose that inhibited thrombus formation. Compared with thrombin inhibitor, JTV-803 had less of an effect on the bleeding time. In the arteriovenous shunt model in cynomolgus monkey, JTV-803 prolonged the occlusion time when administered by continuous infusion at 0.3 mg/kg/h or orally at 10 mg/kg. These results suggest that the human factor Xa inhibitor JTV-803 is an orally active anticoagulant that does not affect bleeding time and is useful for the prevention of thrombus.

Abstract
To determine the occurrence, outcome, and prognostic factors of West syndrome (WS), we performed a retrospective epidemiological study of WS occurred in 47 children (26 boys and 21 girls) in Nagasaki prefecture during a recent 10-year period from 1989 to 1998. The incidence of WS was 3.1/10,000 live births. The mean age at onset of spasm is 6.3 months (range: 2 to 12 months). Thirty-nine patients (83%) had symptomatic WS, in which the prenatal causes (patients) were most frequent, followed by low-birth weight infants (patients), perinatal (patients) and postnatal (patients). The brain CT was performed in 37 patients, and revealed congenital brain malformations (9 patients), destructive brain disorders (12 patients), and no structural abnormalities (16 patients). The seizure outcome was worse in the symptomatic WS than in the cryptogenic WS; seizure/disappeared in 39% of the former and in 75% of the latter/developmental delay before the onset of WS, relapse of WS and persistence of seizures were associated with poor seizure outcomes. Among the remaining seizures at the time of this surveillance, a tonic seizure was most frequently observed, followed by the partial seizures. Lennox-Gastaut syndrome was observed in 2 patients only. Epileptic discharge in the latest interictal EEG were diffuse in 4.3%, focal or multifocal in 60.7%, and absent in 35%, suggesting that many patients with WS had cortical epileptogenic foci. The developmental outcome was very poor in both the symptomatic and cryptogenic WS. The mean DQ in all the patients was 25, and only 4 patients (11%) had a normal DQ (> 75). DQ was lower in patients with congenital brain malformations than in those with destructive brain disorders.

Abstract
LAT1 (the 4F2-light chain 1) is a component of the CD98 surface antigen which participates in multiple functions including amino acid transport, cell survival, cell fusion and integrin activation. We examined the distribution of LAT1 in the mouse brain using immunohistochemistry. LAT1 was expressed on the microvessels, the subfornical organ, the subcommissural organ, ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus, subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus, ependymal layer of the lateral ventricles, and the olfactory bulb. LAT1-positive cells incorporated bromodeoxyuridine in the latter three regions where neurogenesis occurs in adult mouse brain, indicating that LAT1 is involved in neuronal cell proliferation, as well as in amino acid transport in these regions.

Abstract
L-DOPA is transported across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) by an amino acid transporter, system L. Recently, it has been demonstrated that system L consists of two subunits, 4F2hc and either LAT1 or LAT2. 4F2hc/LAT1 and 4F2hc/LAT2 show different transport characteristics, while their distribution in the brain has not been determined. To clarify whether 4F2hc/LAT1 participates in L-DOPA transport across the BBB, we first examined the expression of 4F2hc/LAT1 in the mouse brain capillary endothelial cell line, MBEC4, as an in vitro BBB model. Northern hybridization and immunoblotting revealed that both 4F2hc and LAT1 are expressed and form a heterodimer in MBEC4 cells. To confirm whether 4F2hc/LAT1 acts as system L to transport L-DOPA, we characterized L-DOPA uptake into the cells. The uptake process was time-dependent, temperature-sensitive, and Na(+)-independent. Neutral amino acids with bulky side chains and a bicyclic amino acid, 2-aminobicyclo-[2, 2,1]-heptane-2-carboxylic acid (BCH), inhibited L-DOPA uptake into MBEC4 cells to a great extent, while an acidic amino acid, basic amino acids, and glycine had no effect. Other neutral amino acids, such as alanine, asparagine, glutamine, serine, and threonine inhibited L-DOPA uptake by 40-70% at most. These characteristics are more compatible with those of 4F2hc/LAT1, rather than those of 4F2hc/LAT2. Finally, immunohistochemistry with anti-LAT1 antibody demonstrated that LAT1 is predominantly expressed in the microvessels of the central nervous system. This is the first report showing that the 4F2hc/LAT1 complex participates in L-DOPA transport across the BBB.

Abstract
Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) has a trophic effect on various types of neurons, including cerebellar Purkinje cells. To investigate the role of GDNF in the human cerebellum, we examined the cerebella of eight control cases and eight patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA) immunohistochemically using a polyclonal anti-GDNF antibody. The antibody recognized a single band of approximately 34 kDa on Western blot analysis of human cerebellar homogenates. In the cerebella from normal subjects, the neuronal somata and dendrites of the Purkinje cells were immunostained intensely, as were some axons, including torpedoes, immunolabeled in the granular layer. Many axons and a few oligodendrocytes were also immunopositive in the white matter, and weak immunoreactivity was detected in the granule cells and neurons in the cerebellar nuclei. In the cerebella from patients with MSA, the general immunostaining pattern was similar to that observed in the normal subjects. Most of the remaining Purkinje cells showed strong immunoreactivity, and abundant GDNF-positive granular structures or dense arborizations of GDNF-positive dendrites were found in some areas of the molecular layer. These data suggest that GDNF may be mainly produced and localized in the Purkinje cells of the human cerebellum, even in patients with MSA, and that the functional impairment of the Purkinje cells of MSA patients might cause a focal accumulation of GDNF in the dendrites of some of the surviving Purkinje cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE It has been hypothesized that fibrohyalinosis of the medullary arteries may cause white matter lesions in Binswanger's disease (BD). However, previous reports have been inconsistent on the pathological alterations of the cellular components, which may vary in terms of vessel sizes. We therefore quantitatively examined vasculopathy in the medullary arteries of a defined caliber in BD brains with a quantitative technique. METHODS A total of 20 brains were examined: 10 from patients with BD and 10 from age-matched nonneurological control patients. The alterations in the vascular cell components were examined with quantitative immunohistochemistry and immunoelectron microscopy for collagen and smooth muscle actin. RESULTS The nonneurological control patients showed no white matter lesions. In contrast, the patients with BD invariably had marked white matter lesions, as well as fibrohyalinosis of the medullary arteries. The ratio of the area immunolabeled for collagen type I and type IV to the cross-sectional area was 2-fold higher in the BD patients than in the control patients, regardless of the vessel caliber (P<0.005). Although the ratio for smooth muscle actin in the BD brains was increased in arteries of <100 microm (P<0.0001), there was no corresponding increase in the arteries of >100 microm. However, in the ultrastructure of these vessels, the cell bodies immunolabeled for smooth muscle actin were hypertrophic and segregated from each other by proliferated fibrils. The basal lamina appeared multilayered, and the endothelial cells were swollen. Collagen type I and type IV immunoreactive fibrils also proliferated in the pericapillary space of the BD brains. CONCLUSIONS The proliferation of collagen fibrils in the media and adventitia of the blood vessels in BD brains was not specific to small arteries and arterioles but also occurred in the pericapillary spaces. Pericapillary sclerosis, smooth muscle cell proliferation in the terminal arterioles, and their morphological transformation in the proximal arteries may alter the shear rates and thus cause profound microcirculatory disturbances in BD brains.

Abstract
This study describes morphological changes during capsule formation of Trichinella spiralis with emphasis on nuclei within the capsule. The nuclei of the pre-existing muscle cell may become hypertrophied or degrade soon after the entrance of newborn larvae. Cytoplasm associated with these hypertrophied nuclei was basophilic in H&E staining and composed of mitochondria and rough endoplasmic reticulum. Satellite cells underwent cell division and joined to the nurse cell. These nuclei may also become hypertrophied or degrade. Cytoplasm associated with nuclei of satellite cell origin was eosinophilic in H&E staining and composed of mitochondria, polysomes, and smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum. Eosinophilic cytoplasm (of satellite cell origin) became prevalent in the capsule as capsule formation proceeded. Infiltrated cells were observed within the capsule. Thus this study showed diversity of nuclei in the capsule of Trichinella.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate MR cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) findings of intraductal papillary tumors of the pancreas and correlate them with histopathology. MATERIAL AND METHODS Seventeen patients with intraductal papillary tumor of the pancreas underwent MRCP before surgery. MRCP findings were correlated to histopathology with regard to the presence of septa and excrescent nodules in the cystic lesion, communication between the cystic lesion and the main pancreatic duct (MPD), degree of dilatation of MPD, and dilatation of the common bile duct (CBD). RESULTS MRCP demonstrated septa in 17 cases (100%), excrescent nodules in 8 cases (47.1%), communication between the intraductal papillary tumor and the MPD in 14 cases (82.3%), dilatation of MPD over 50% in 6 cases (35.3%), and dilatation of CBD in 3 cases (17.6%). These findings showed excellent correlation with histopathology. The septum on MRCP corresponded with a layer of connective tissue with pancreatic duct epithelium. Excrescent nodules in the carcinomas consisted not only of malignant cells, but also of dysplasia and adenoma. Excrescent nodules in adenomas were consistent not only with minimal papillary growth of adenoma, but also with proliferation of fibrosis, and hematoma and organized fibrin with minimal fibrosis. Pancreatic tissue was affected by chronic pancreatitis in all cases. Cases with dilatation of CBD on MRCP were due to microscopic invasion by the carcinoma. CONCLUSION MRCP appearances of intraductal papillary tumors are well correlated with the findings at histopathology.

Abstract
We have examined genetic alterations in 11 surgically removed oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs) using comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) and laser scanning cytometry (LSC), which allow quantitative analysis of chromosomal abnormalities. CGH analysis revealed gains and/or losses of DNA sequence copy number in all tumors. Gains in DNA sequence copy number were detected frequently for chromosome arms 3q25-28 (6/11), 5p (6/11) and 8q (5/11), and losses in chromosome arms 18q (4/11), 19q (4/11), 17p (3/11), and 19p (3/11). Amplification of 5p was observed in two tumors. LSC detected DNA aneuploidy with DNA indices ranging from 1.30 to 1.82 in 6 of 11 tumors. The number of chromosomal aberrations was higher in DNA aneuploid tumors than in diploid tumors (8.17 vs 3.60/tumor, P<0.05). Furthermore, the average number of chromosomal aberrations was significantly higher in stage T2 tumors and larger tumors than in stage T1 tumors (7.71 vs 3.25/tumor, P<0.05). Our results suggest that DNA aneuploidy and large tumor size reflect an underlying chromosomal instability.

Abstract
The localization of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) family receptor alpha-1 (GFRalpha-1) was investigated in rat brain by immunohistochemistry using a polyclonal antibody against a specific sequence of the rat protein. For raising the antisera in rabbits, we synthesized the oligopeptide SDVFQQVEHISKGN that corresponds to residues 139 to 152 of rat GFRalpha-1. On immunospot assay, 0.5 microg/ml of an affinity-purified antibody was capable of detecting 7.8 pmol of the rat GFRalpha-1 oligopeptides. When rat brain homogenates were examined by Western blots, the antibody revealed two main bands with molecular weights of approximately 47 kDa and 53 kDa, corresponding to the known sizes of GFRalpha-1. Immunohistochemistry in rat brain demonstrated that GFRalpha-1-like immunoreactivity was present in neurons but not in glial cells. The localization of GFRalpha-1-like immunoreactivity was largely consistent with that of the corresponding GFRalpha-1 mRNA. Positive neurons were distributed widely in various brain regions, but were particularly abundant in such regions as the olfactory bulb, diagonal band, substantia innominata, zona incerta, substantia nigra, cerebellar cortex, nuclei of the cranial nerves including auditory system and spinal motoneurons. The present study showed that GFRalpha-1 in the normal central nervous system is expressed preferentially in certain multiple neuronal systems that include cholinergic system as well as dopaminergic system and motor neurons. As GFRalpha-1 protein was found in numerous brain structures, GDNF family ligands may have therapeutic application not only in degenerative diseases affecting in specific nervous systems, such as Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and multiple system atrophy, but in diffusely damaging diseases like cerebrovascular diseases.

Abstract
One pair of high-sensitive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers for Cryptosporidium parvum was constructed based on the sequence of random amplified polymorphic DNA. PCR with this primer pair amplified only the DNA of C. parvum, not the control DNA including Cryptosporidium muris. This primer pair had most advantageous in its sensitivity over the six pairs of primers reported elsewhere. The minimum amount of template DNA required to produce visible bands after gel electrophoresis and ethidium bromide staining was 0.156 pg of C. parvum or just a single oocyst in the PCR tube.

Abstract
Hybrids between female Trichinella spiralis and male Trichinella britovi were constructed. Then, hybrid genotype was characterized by DNA markers including mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (CO I) gene, the gene encoding the 43-kDa excretory-secretory (ES) protein, and genomic DNA fragments specific for T. spiralis and T. britovi identified from random amplified polymorphism DNA (RAPD). PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis of the mitochondrial CO I gene revealed that all hybrids carried a T. spiralis pattern. The same analysis of the gene encoding the 43-kDa ES protein showed that each hybrid carried both T. spiralis and T. britovi gene type simultaneously. In the analysis of genomic DNA using RAPD-derived PCR primers, some hybrids carried T. spiralis and T. britovi-specific RAPD markers, while others carried the RAPD marker of T. spiralis only.

Abstract
This study investigates the effects of Ca on bone in the ovariectomized mice. Twenty-six female ICR mice aged 5 weeks were used. They were ovariectomized (OVX) or sham-operated (SHAM) and fed standard mouse diet (SF) or special low calcium diet (L.Ca), respectively. All animals were sacrificed at day 100 after operation. Mechanical strength of the left femur and tibia was measured by the three-point bending strength test. The bones were dried, weighed and burned to ash. Correlation between mechanical strength and ash content was found. A specimen of the right tibia was prepared. Mechanical strength, ash content and ratio of dry bone weight to body weight of the femur and tibia in OVX and L.Ca mice were significantly less than in SHAM and SF mice. SHAM/SF mice and OVX/L.Ca group showed highest and lowest values in all cases. The values for the femur and tibia in OVX/SF mice were lower than in SHAM/SF group and in OVX/L.Ca group were less than in OVX/SF mice. Correlation coefficients for mechanical strength and ash content were 0.704 and 0.776 for the femur and tibia. Ca is thus related to inhibition of bone loss and maintenance of bone mass and effective prevention of osteoporosis.
