Abstract
The occurrence of tetrodotoxin (TTX) in sediment from Lake Suwa, Japan, was confirmed by a tissue culture assay, high-performance liquid chromatography, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Altogether, 17 TTX-producing bacteria belonging to five genera were isolated from Lake Suwa and Pond Inokasira. Our results indicate that TTX and TTX-producing bacteria occur even in freshwater environments.

Abstract
Antitumor activity of cisplatin, carboplatin, etoposide, or human hepatocyte growth factor (hHGF), was compared by examining the colony formation ability of four liver cancer cell lines (PLC/PRF/5 and HuH-7, hepatocellular carcinoma; HuH-6 and HepG2, hepatoblastoma). Antitumor activity was evaluated from the drug concentration causing 50% cell death by a colony assay. PLC/PRF/5 cells were most effectively killed by cisplatin and etoposide, HuH-7 cells by cisplatin and carboplatin, HuH-6 cells by etoposide, and Hep G2 cells by cisplatin. These results indicate that among four liver cancer cell lines, the three were the most sensitive to cisplatin, the two were to etoposide and the only one cell line was to carboplatin. There was no significant relationship between each drug and types of liver cancer. Combined treatment with cisplatin (0.01-1.0 microgram/ml) and etoposide (0.1 microgram/ml) showed synergistic cytotoxic effects on the colony formation of PLC/PRF/5 cells, while combination of carboplatin (0.01-0.1 microgram/ml) and etoposide (0.1 microgram/ml) caused subadditive cytotoxic effects. hHGF stimulated the colony formation of HuH-6 cells, while it inhibited that of Hep G2 cells. The treatment of HuH-6 with cisplatin and hHGF showed a higher cell survival percentage compared with the treatment with cisplatin alone. On the other hand, cell survival of Hep G2 cells was remarkably decreased by the combined treatment with cisplatin and hHGF.

Abstract
The development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is very closely associated with chronic liver disease. In the present study, the prevalence of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection as a causative role in the development of HCC was analysed in 253 patients with HCC, who were admitted to our hospital during 1976-90. Among these patients, 68 (27%) were positive for HBsAg but negative for anti-HCV antibody (group I); in contrast, 147 (58%) were negative for HBsAg but positive for anti-HCV antibody (group II), 19 (7.5%) were both positive (group III), and 19 (7.5%) were both negative (group IV). To evaluate the serial changes in the prevalence of HBsAg and anti-HCV antibody, changes in the number of patients were compared between group I and group II. The number of group I patients reached a peak during 1982-84 and was thereafter followed by a decreasing trend, whereas the number of group II patients steadily increased and reached a plateau over 6 recent years. These results suggest that HCV infection recently seems to play a more important role in the development of HCC than chronic HBV infection, even in the Nagasaki Prefecture, where the HBV carrier rate is higher than elsewhere in Japan.

Abstract
The immunocytochemical localization of hCG in the syncytiotrophoblast of hydatidiform moles was observed by means of the immunoglobulin gold technique with rabbit anti-human hCG serum. Immunoreactive gold particles of hCG are preferentially localized in the distal portion of the Golgi complexes, Golgi-derived secretory granules 200-300 nm in diameter, and large electron dense bodies 500-1,000 nm in diameter. The secretory granules exist throughout the cytoplasm above the nuclear region and are occasionally released by exocytosis from the syncytiotrophoblast. On the other hand, the large electron dense granules seem to be cytolysosomes in nature and are involved in uptake and storage of hCG.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Colloid osmotic pressure has been thought to regulate albumin synthesis; however, the exact mechanism remains obscure. In the present study, the effect of colloid osmotic pressure on the albumin and alpha-fetoprotein gene expression in HuH-7 human hepatoma cells was analyzed. METHODS HuH-7 cells were treated with albumin or dextran (mean mol wt, 70,000), and changes in the levels of albumin and alpha-fetoprotein messenger RNA (mRNA) were analyzed by Northern blotting. Furthermore, in transient chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) plasmid transfection experiments, effects of colloid osmotic pressure on CAT activities were studied. RESULTS By Northern blot analysis, the levels of both albumin and alpha-fetoprotein mRNA were dose-dependently suppressed by the elevation of colloid osmotic pressure and returned to pretreatment levels 48 hours after the culture medium containing dextran was replaced with a dextran-free fresh medium. In transient CAT plasmid transfection experiments, the increased level of colloid osmotic pressure resulted in the repression of both albumin and alpha-fetoprotein promoter activities. In contrast, alpha-fetoprotein enhancer activity, which possibly regulates not only alpha-fetoprotein but also albumin gene expression, was not affected by changes in colloid osmotic pressure. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that colloid osmotic pressure regulates both albumin and alpha-fetoprotein gene transcription through the modulation of their promoter activities.

Abstract
Administration of epidermal growth factor (EGF) stimulates DNA synthesis in gut epithelial cells and inhibits gastric acid secretion. A physiological role of EGF in cell kinetics of gastric epithelium, however, has not been fully understood. In mature male mice, large amounts of EGF are produced in the submandibular glands, and sialoadenectomy (removal of the submandibular glands) causes a marked reduction of plasma EGF levels. For the evaluation of a biophysical function of EGF, sialoadenectomized mice and sham-operated mice were injected with 3H-thymidine to compare the proliferative activity and the cell-turnover of gastric epithelium between the two groups using the autoradiographic analysis. When mice were killed 90 min after a single injection of 3H-thymidine, the percentages of fundic gland mucosal cells radiolabeled in sialoadenectomized and sham-operated mice were 27.3 +/- 5.0% and 26.3 +/- 5.8% (mean +/- SD), respectively. The difference was not significant (p > 0.05). Similarly, the labeling indices of pyloric gland mucosal cells were not different between the two groups (26.7 +/- 4.3% vs 27.8 +/- 3.7%, p > 0.05). In contrast, when mice were given 17 repeated injections of 3H-thymidine at 6 hr intervals and killed 48 hr after the last injection, labeling indices in sialoadenectomized mice were significantly lower than those in sham-operated mice (35.3 +/- 4.3% vs 52.8 +/- 1.1% in the fundic gland area; 41.0 +/- 6.2% vs 55.1 +/- 5.9% in the pyloric gland area, p < 0.001, respectively). Treatment of sialoadenectomized mice with EGF (5 mg/mouse per day) completely restored the percentages of the radiolabeled cells to control levels. These findings suggest that endogenous EGF plays a major role in maintaining biological cell-turnover of the mouse gastric epithelium.

Abstract
Genetic and phenotypic studies on the strains biochemically identified as Shewanella putrefaciens, which had a G+C content ranging from 52 to 54 mol% were conducted. The moles percent G+C of the type strain of S. putrefaciens is 46. Surprisingly, DNA homology experiments revealed that all these strains are genetically related to Shewanella alga (which was reported to produce tetrodotoxin), not to the type strain of S. putrefaciens. In this study, we reidentified clinical strains of S. putrefaciens which have a high range of moles percent G+C, as does S. alga. We also characterized the reidentified strains and found that the original description of S. alga (U. Simidu, K. Kita-Tsukamoto, T. Yasumoto, and M. Yotsu, Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol. 40:331-336, 1990) is insufficient to identify this strain. An emended description of S. alga is given.

Abstract
A new dynamic CT method for evaluating the portal blood flow is described. Thirty healthy volunteers were injected with non-ionic hypo-osmotic iodine contrast medium to estimate the portal blood flow. Time density curves (TD-curves) for the abdominal aorta and the main trunk of the portal vein were determined on the basis of data obtained by dynamic CT. From the TD-curves, portal blood flow coefficient and circulation time to flow into the portal vein (P-P time) were calculated. More detailed data of the TD-curves could be obtained by the new dynamic CT than by the previous methods. Subjects were simultaneously studied by an ultrasonic pulsed Doppler method which has been clinically accepted. There was a significant correlation between our dynamic CT method (portal blood flow coefficient) and the ultrasonic pulsed Doppler method concerning the measurement of portal blood flow. Therefore, it may be concluded that this CT method is reliable and clinically acceptable.

Abstract
The interaction of IFN-alpha with IL-1 beta or TNF-alpha on hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) expression was analysed in hepatitis B virus (HBV)-DNA integrated PLC/PRF/5 and non-integrated HuH-7 human hepatoma cells. Secretion of HBsAg in PLC/PRF/5 cells was reduced by IFN-alpha, IL-1 beta or TNF-alpha, and synergistically depressed when IFN-alpha was used in combination with IL-1 beta or TNF-alpha. By Northern blot analysis, the levels of HBsAg mRNA were suppressed by IFN-alpha in combination with IL-1 beta or TNF-alpha. In the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase plasmid transfection assay, IFN-alpha in combination with IL-1 beta or TNF-alpha caused a much greater suppression of HBV enhancer activity than IFN-alpha, IL-1 beta or TNF-alpha alone in both hepatoma cells. These findings suggest that the interaction of IFN-alpha with IL-1 beta or TNF-alpha synergistically represses HBV enhancer activity, resulting in depressed expression of HBsAg.

Abstract
9-deoxy-delta 9,delta 12-13,14-dihydro-prostaglandin D2 (delta 12-PGJ2) is a potent inhibitor of proliferation of tumor cells. In the present study, the effect of delta 12-PGJ2 on the alpha-fetoprotein(AFP) and the albumin gene expression was analyzed in HuH-7 human hepatoma cells. delta 12-PGJ2 inhibited the cell growth and reduced the medium AFP concentrations dose-dependently. To determine whether this decline of AFP depends only on the relative decrease in cell numbers by delta 12-PGJ2, or is in part, due to the decrease in the cellular AFP synthesis by delta 12-PGJ2, Northern blot analysis was performed in this study. By Northern blotting, it was shown that delta 12-PGJ2 caused a marked reduction in the levels of the AFP mRNA and the albumin mRNA. In contrast, the level of the beta-actin mRNA was not changed by delta 12-PGJ2. In the transient chloramphnicol acetyltransferase plasmid transfection experiments, delta 12-PGJ2 did not suppress the AFP enhancer activity, which possibly regulates both the AFP and the albumin gene expression in HuH-7 hepatoma cells, but resulted in the selective repression of the AFP and the albumin promoter activity. These results suggest that delta 12-PGJ2 suppresses not only cell growth but also expression of the AFP gene and the albumin gene at the transcriptional level in human hepatoma cells.

Abstract
Simultaneous immunoelectron microscopic localization of histamine and factor VIII-related antigen was examined on the same ultrathin section of the endothelium of the human umbilical vein from full-term deliveries by means of the double-immunolabeling technique. Small gold particles demonstrating antibody reaction with histamine are preferentially located in the cytoplasmic matrix and organelles, especially in mitochondria and on the luminal membrane surface of the endothelial cells. The gold particles representing histamine immunoreactivity also located on some of Weibel-Palade (WP) bodies. In contrast, large gold particles demonstrating factor VIII-related antigen are concentrated preferentially on most WP bodies. Single labeling of either histamine or factor VIII-related antigen shows similar results to those of the double labeling. The present study indicates that some WP bodies are involved in storage of both factor VIII-related antigen and histamine, but others store factor VIII-related antigen only. This difference in contents of WP bodies may be induced during the development and maturation process of this inclusion. At any rate, it is reasonable to consider that WP bodies have important roles in both vascular tonus and hemostasis during the vascular obliteration.

Abstract
A case of surgically confirmed primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the liver is presented. A 35-year-old man was admitted to hospital with an epigastric mass. No abnormal laboratory findings, including tumor markers, were detected. Ultrasound and computed tomography showed the main tumor in the left lateral segment and a daughter nodule in the posterior segment of the liver. Arteriography demonstrated a slightly hypervascular mass in the left lateral segment. Histological examination of the resected tumor showed bundles of spindle cells with a focal storiform pattern, which were intermingled with bizarre giant cells, therefore a diagnosis of malignant fibrous histiocytoma was made.

Abstract
The toxic effects of cadmium on the thyroid gland of pregnant rats were studied with an electron microscope and an X-ray microanalyzer. Serum levels of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) were also analyzed. Deterioration of the rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum occurred in the thyroid follicular epithelium on the fifth day of cadmium treatment. Large intracellular vacuoles, which arose from dilated cisternae of the rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum, were fused together, and marked swelling of the mitochondria was also noted. Thyroglobulin-secreting granules at the apical cytoplasm were decreased in number. By energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis, cadmium peaks were preferentially obtained from swollen mitochondria in the follicular epithelial cells. Serum levels of T3 and T4 were significantly decreased in cadmium-treated rats dams when compared to those of controls. In the present experiment, cycloheximide also caused degenerative changes in the rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum and the disappearance of thyroglobulin-secreting granules. Cycloheximide is a known inhibitor of protein synthesis on cytosolic ribosomes. These results indicated that accumulated cadmium in the mitochondria of thyroid follicular epithelial cells might disturb the oxidative phosphorylation of this organelle and the loss of energy supply possibly caused the inhibition of the synthesis and release of thyroid hormones.

Abstract
[35S]Methionine-labeled protein-secretory patterns resolved by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in abnormal hydatidiform-mole placentas were compared with those in normal full-term placentas with special reference to human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) by means of immunoblotting and immunoelectron-microscopic techniques. Although basic protein-secretory patterns of both placentas were similar to each other, four polypeptide spots appeared and one spot disappeared in the hydatidiform-mole samples. Among four newly synthesized and secreted spots, three were immunoreacted with anti-hCG serum by an immunoblotting experiment. Ultrastructural localization of hCG showed that the labeling intensity of anti-hCG serum in hydatidiform-mole placentas was much heavier than that in full-terms ones. Particularly, the Golgi apparatus, middle-sized granules and large bodies were highly immunoreactive. The present study reveals that hydatidiform-mole placentas have different protein-secretory functions especially in hCG synthesis and secretion from those of normal pregnancy.

Abstract
An extremely rare case of in situ adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix that developed into invasive cancer is reported. The patient was a 54-year-old Japanese female who complained of vaginal spotting. Pelvic examination revealed no abnormalities and routine Papanicolaou smear was misinterpreted as negative. Multiple wedge biopsies of the uterine cervix were done because Papanicolaou smears taken after 7 months were reported as suspicious. The wedge biopsy revealed dysplastic changes of the endocervical glands. It was diagnosed as being in situ adenocarcinoma by a later review. The patient was examined by cytology and colposcopy every 3 to 12 months. An advanced adenocarcinoma was found in the uterine cervix after 5 years. Total abdominal hysterectomy, resection of the vagina and cardinal ligament, and postoperative irradiation were performed. The patient is alive and well at this writing. This is the second case of in situ adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix that developed into invasive cancer.

Abstract
The effect of various anticancer drugs on alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) secretion and some other properties of human hepatoma cells was investigated in vitro with the following results. (1) There was a high correlation between AFP secretion and cell number after treatment of human hepatoma cells with anticancer drugs and the amounts of AFP secreted per 10(4) cells per 72 hours (AFP-secreting capacity) were not affected within therapeutically achievable concentrations (TAC). (2) The AFP-secreting capacity was affected with some exceptions in the cells treated with higher concentration of drugs than TAC. Furthermore, chromosomal and morphological aberrations in the similarly treated cells, were also observed, suggesting the relationship between the change of AFP-producing capacity and that of some other properties.

Abstract
Four patients with recurrent or advanced endometrial cancer have undergone combination chemotherapy with Cyclophosphamide, Adriamycin and Cisplatin (CAP). All drugs were administered by I.V. on day 1 in the following doses: Cyclophosphamide 500 mg/m2, Adriamycin 50 mg/m2 and Cisplatin 50 mg/m2. The treatment was repeated every 4 weeks and continued as long as there was disease progression. Two complete clinical responses and two partial responses were achieved. Based on these good results, we have initiated post-operative prophylactic chemotherapy using CAP in high risk patients. Adverse effects including myelo-suppression, nausea, and vomiting, and alopecia were seen in almost all patients. In no case, however, did any patient experience life-threatening toxicity. Based on our experience, CAP therapy appears tolerable when used per our schedule.

Abstract
Simultaneous immunoelectron microscopic localization of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) and human placental lactogen (HPL) was examined on the same ultrathin section of human chorionic villi by means of the double labeling technique. Using specific rabbit antisera against HCG and HPL followed by goat anti-rabbit IgG-coated colloidal gold of different sizes (15 nm and 5 nm), immunoreactions of HCG were concentrated on middle-sized secretory granules of 200-300 nm and large dense bodies of 500-1000 nm, while those of HPL were exclusively located on small secretory granules of 80-180 nm. The present experiment provides direct evidence for our previous data that HCG and HPL seem to be stored in different granular components in the syncytiotrophoblast.

The immunocytochemical localization of human chorionic gonadotropin was investigated in chorionic villi from the seventh to twelfth week of gestation. By the light microscopic peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique, positive reactions of human chorionic gonadotropin were found exclusively in the syncytiotrophoblast. Immunoelectron microscopy by means of the protein A-gold technique reveals localization of the immunoreactive gold particles in two kinds of membrane-bound granular inclusions in this cell; one type is granules of 200 to 300 nm in diameter with moderate electron density and the other is large electron-dense bodies of 500 to 1000 nm. The former seems to be Golgi-derived secretory granules that play a role in the release of human chorionic gonadotropin from the syncytiotrophoblast. Although the origin of the latter is still uncertain, a certain amount of this hormone might be stored or treated by lysosomal digestion in the large bodies during these stages.

Abstract
Immunoelectron microscope localization of human placental lactogen (hPL) was investigated in the chorionic villi from week 7 to full-term gestation with the protein A-gold technique. With specific antiserum against hPL, immuno-reactive gold particles were found to be preferentially located in Golgi-derived, electron-dense small granules of 80-180 nm in the syncytiotrophoblast. Our electron micrographs indicate that these small granules increase in number in the course of gestation and are released by exocytosis from the apical cell surface. The present study reveals that hPL is segregated from the Golgi apparatus, stored in the syncytiotrophoblast as secretory granules, and released into the maternal blood.

Abstract
The immunocytochemical localization of factor VIII-related antigen in the human umbilical vein was investigated with the light microscopic immunoperoxidase and immunoelectron microscopical protein A-gold techniques. The light microscopic observation showed that peroxidase reactions were found exclusively in the endothelia of the vessel. By the protein A-gold method, immunoreactive gold particles were located in endothelial specific granules (Weibel-Palade bodies). These data suggest that endothelial specific granules are storage sites of factor VIII-related antigen.

Abstract
The syncytiotrophoblast of the human chorionic villi during earlier stages of gestation contains abundant granules derived from Golgi complexes. The granules often include very electron-dense lamellae in their interior, and X-ray microanalysis revealed the presence of iron in these lamellae. It is, therefore, supposed that iron particles absorbed into the syncytiotrophoblast are transported to Golgi complexes and integrated into these lamellae. No evidences that the granules are released from the cells by exocytosis have been proved. Thus, one possibility to their nature might be considered, that is they play a role in lysosomal storage of iron during earlier stages when the capillaries in the chorionic stroma are undeveloped and so have little ability to transport iron into the fetal circulation.

Abstract
High-performance liquid chromatography revealed that toad aorta delivered appreciable concentrations of histamine into the perfusate when perfused by Ringer's solution containing the histamine liberator. Electron micrographs of this vessel after the perfusion showed an expulsion of the endothelial specific granules into the vascular lumen. These results support to our previous hypothesis that the granules are a reservoir site of histamine and might take an important role in the regulation of vascular tone.

Abstract
Six established Japanese Burkitt lymphoma (BL) cell lines including one case with null cell type were studied by chromosomal banding techniques. The modal chromosome number was diploid or nearly diploid in five cases and hyperdiploid in one case. The marker chromosome 14q+ was observed in four of the six cases; the origin of the extra band was a chromosome 8 in three including the null cell case but could not be identified in the other. The two cases lacking the 14q+ marker had variant translocations involving the long arm of chromosome 8, one of which carried a translocation, t(8;22) (q24;q13) and the other a translocation, t(2;8) (p12;q24). Although structural and/or numerical aberrations were found in all six cell lines, chromosome 8 was the one most consistently involved. This frequent involvement of chromosome 8 in aberrations; therefore, may be an important event in the development of BL rather than the presence of a 14q+ marker chromosome.

Abstract
Relapses in nine patients with acute myelocytic leukemia were treated with a combination of aclarubicin (ACR) and cytosine arabinoside (ara-C). ACR, 40 mg/m2/day, was administered daily by intravenous injection from day 1 to day 3 and ara-C, 60-80 mg/m2/day, divided into 2 doses, was given every 12 h by intravenous infusion from day 1 to day 7. Depending on the state of the bone marrow, ACR-ara-C regimen was modified in administration period and repeated after the resting periods of at least 7 days. Complete remission was obtained in 7 of 9 patients (77.8%). The time required for achieving the complete remission varied from 20 to 55 days with a median of 39 days. The duration of complete remission was from 8 to 52 weeks with a median of 22 weeks. Side effects on digestive system such as nausea, vomiting and anorexia, were seen in all patients, although they were managed by symptomatic treatment. The results indicate the effectiveness of this ACR-ara-C regimen in the clinical management of acute nonlymphocytic leukemia.

Abstract
Effects of age and sex on microsomal heme oxygenase activity and cytochrome P-450 content were investigated in Wister rats. Heme oxygenase activity declined with an increase in age, namely, its activity in 100 days old (young) rats was 58% in male and 72% in female rats as compared with respective 30 days old (immature) rats, and in 300 days old (old) rats it was 32% in male and 39% in female rats. In male rats, cytochrome P-450 content based on 100 g body weight decreased only in old rats as compared with immature rats, whereas a significant reduction was observed in female rats in the content based on mg microsomal protein as well as based on 100 g body weight in young and old animals. In littermate rats at the age of 56 days which obtained by in breeding in our laboratory, sex difference was apparent in heme oxygenase activity and cytochrome P-450 content, and further a good reciprocal correlation between that activity and content (r = 0.9730 in male, and r = -0.852 in female) was observed.

Abstract
After a single treatment with d-methamphetamine (philopon) at a dose of 8 mg/kg in 10 weeks old female Wistar rats, heme oxygenase activity was enhanced at 3 hr and reached it peak level at 12 hr, whereas cytochrome P-450 content showed the lowest level at 12 hr. However, activity of delta-aminolevulinic acid synthetase was not affected. Twenty-four hr later, all measured parameters returned to nearly initial levels at zero time. The pretreatment with cycloheximide blocked the increase of heme oxygenase activity in philopon-treated animals.

Abstract
Partial excess of chromosome 1 (q25-q32) was noted in malignant cells from all of 10 patients who had disorders such as non-African Burkitt's lymphoma, adult T-cell leukemia, myelofibrosis, malignant lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia or chronic myelocytic leukemia in blast crisis. The break points on chromosome 1 were at centromere, q12, q21, q23, q25 and q32. Variations in the specific region of the long arm of chromosome 1, q25-q32, were thought to be important in the evolution of malignant cell proliferation.

Abstract
A 30 year old female patient diagnosed as acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with hand mirror like configuration of lymphoblastic-lymphocytic cells is reported. Although the leukemia was resistant to conventional chemotherapeutic regimens, the patient always looked well and survived for more than 20 months. Surface marker analysis showed that the cell was non-T, non-B, and not reactive to antiserum against common ALL antigen. A cytogenetic study of all the analyzable metaphases of the direct bone marrow preparation had a normal female karyotype. The clinical and hematological course is described. The immunological significance and the influence of hand mirror cell on chemosensitivity and prognosis are discussed.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to investigate the usefulness of the direct leucocyte migration agarose method for studying cell-mediated immunity in vitro. Comparative studies of the purified protein derivative (PPD) skin test and the leucocyte migration inhibition test (LMIT) in which PPD was used as test antigen indicated a significant qualitative and a weak quantitative correlation between these two tests. Furthermore a positive correlation was found between the LMIT and the macrophage migration inhibition test (MIT) using ultrasonicated authochthonous tumor antigen. Comparative studies of the LMIT, MIT, PPD skin and DNCB tests on the same patients showed that cases responding positively to the the PPD skin and DNCB tests tended to respond positively to the LMIT and MIT. Patients with digestive organ cancers were examined by the LMIT. With the advance of cancer, decreased positive test test rates were found. After gastric cancer operations the LMIT findings were divided into two groups: one type changed from positive to negative, and the other type changed from negative to positive. The former response was suggestive of a successful operation, and the latter response was suggestive of a non-curative operation. These results indicated that the direct leucocyte migration inhibition agarose test was useful investigating cell-mediated immunity.
