Contraceptive method switching among American female adolescents, 1979

Better knowledge about contraceptive use in adolescents is needed if pregnancy prevention is to be improved. Data from the 1979 National Survey of Young Women were used to examine method switching once contraceptive use had begun among 449 never-pregnant young women who reported premarital intercourse more than once. Bivariate chi2 tests and multivariate logit regression were used to examine factors related to switching in four analyses: overall switching; switching among those with one intercourse partner; and switching from nonmedical and medical methods separately. Frequency of intercourse and type of first method had an interactive effect on switching; length of exposure to switching, type of relationship, and reason for choosing the first method were also significant. These results suggest that providers and educators should consider the circumstances under which contraceptive methods are chosen and used by young women when counseling them as to what method may be best for them.

Sterilization in Canberra

In contrast to the USA and the UK, vasectomy is less popular than tubal ligation in Australia, and this may reflect differences in husband-wife communication. Using data from the 1979 Canberra Population Survey, it seemed that although a majority of respondents would use sterilization, female sterilization would be preferred, largely because males were more resistant to the idea than females. Respondents born outside Australia, the UK, and Eire were more resistant to the idea of sterilization, but reported higher use of tubal ligation.

Integrating health services into an MCH-FP program: lessons from Matlab, Bangladesh

Since 1977 the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, has conducted a field experiment in family planning and MCH in its Matlab research station. The project began with an emphasis on family planning and MCH services were added in stages. This paper uses time series regression methods to address the question of whether the addition of health services contributed to family planning efficacy in Matlab in a program launched with minimal MCH services. The results show that some MCH interventions increased contraceptive prevalence, some decreased it, and others had no effect. The broader significance of these findings for implementing integrated programs is discussed.

Changes in condom use among homosexual men in San Francisco

Employed data from two longitudinal surveys of gay men in San Francisco (a) to examine for cohort (Study 1) and attrition (Studies 1 and 2) bias effects on reported changes in condom use by gay men and (b) to investigate predictors of condom use (Study 2). Substantial increases in condom use were observed, and these changes were unrelated to attrition and cohort bias. In terms of predictors of condom use, men who always used condoms had higher levels of social support from informal sources of help, had more positive expectations that condoms would have positive interpersonal and personal consequences, and were more likely to be HIV positive than men who used condoms occasionally or never. The results are discussed in terms of their implications for HIV-prevention research.
