Abstract
Basiliximab (Simulect) is a high-affinity chimeric and humanized monoclonal antibody, directed against the alpha chain of human interleukin-2 receptor (CD25). The administration of two doses (20 mg intravenously per dose), one given 2 hours before transplantation and the second on day 4 posttransplant, provides suppression of the interleukin-2 receptor for up to 45 days, reducing the rate of acute rejection in kidney transplantation. This study was designed to compare the efficacy of a single dose of Simulect to the recommended two doses. The other objective was the reduction of the costs related to the standard two dose protocol. Fifty-two patients were included: group I (32 patients) received two doses of Simulect; group II (20 patients) received one dose. There were 39 living related donors and 13 living unrelated. All patients were followed for 1 year. Maintenance immunosuppression consisted of tacrolimus or cyclosporine, mycophenolate mofetil, and steroids. The diagnosis of rejection was made clinically. All episodes were treated with intravenous steroids. The incidence of rejection was similar in both groups; there was no graft loss to rejection. There were two deaths in group I, and one death in group II, yielding graft and patient actual survival rates at 1 year of 93% and 95%, respectively. These results suggest that Simulect is equally effective when administered in two doses or in a single dose in kidney transplantation. The reduction of cost by giving a single dose is significant, especially in developing countries without national health insurance.

Abstract
The consumption of drugs of abuse provokes sensitization, the development of tolerance, dependency, and eventually addiction. It is thought that these events are partially a consequence of drug-induced alterations in the organization of neuronal circuits in specific areas of the brain. In the present study, we have used intracellular injections of lucifer yellow to examine the alterations that may occur in cortical pyramidal neurons of addiction-prone Lewis rats following 15 days of self-administration of morphine. Specifically, the effects of morphine on the structure, size and branching complexity of the basal dendrites, and spine density were determined in the basal dendritic arbors of layer III pyramidal neurons in both the prelimbic and motor cortex. We found that following morphine self-administration, there was a reduction in the size and branching complexity of the dendritic arbors of pyramidal cells in the motor cortex. In contrast, prelimbic pyramidal neurons from these morphine-treated animals had larger and longer basal dendritic arbors. Furthermore, the spine density on pyramidal neurons was higher in both cortical regions of morphine self-administered rats. These results suggest that at least part of the behavioral changes produced by repeated opiate administration may be attributed to alterations in pyramidal cell structure.

Abstract
We generalize to arbitrary waiting-time distributions some results which were previously derived for discrete distributions. We show that for any two waiting-time distributions with the same mean delay time, that with higher dispersion will lead to a faster front. Experimental data on the speed of virus infections in a plaque are correctly explained by the theoretical predictions using a Gaussian delay-time distribution, which is more realistic for this system than the Dirac delta distribution considered previously [J. Fort and V. Méndez, Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 178101 (2002)].

Abstract
This work presents the results of the application of an optimally controlled influent flow rate strategy to biodegrade, in a discontinuous reactor, a mixture of municipal wastewater and different concentrations of phenol when used as a toxic compound model. The influent is fed into the reactor in such a way to obtain the maximal degradation rate avoiding the inhibition of the microorganisms. Such an optimal strategy was able to manage increments of phenol concentrations in the influent up to 7000 mg/L without any problem. It was shown that the optimally controlled influent flow rate strategy is a good and reliable tool when a discontinuous reactor is applied to degrade an industrial wastewater.

Abstract
This work presents the results of the application of an optimally controlled influent flow rate strategy to biodegrade, in a discontinuous reactor, high concentrations of 4-chlorophenol used as toxic compound model. The influent is fed into the reactor in such a way as to obtain the maximal degradation rate, thus avoiding the inhibition of the microorganisms. The optimal strategy was able to manage increments of toxic concentrations in the influent up to 7,000 mg 4CP/L without any problem. It was shown not only that higher concentrations of toxic could be treated, but also that a reduction in degradation time (around 52%) and in the supplied air volume was obtained.

Abstract
Cellular immune responses were examined in the skin of cattle after primary and secondary experimental infections with Hypoderma lineatum larvae. Skin biopsies were taken at 0, 6, 12, 48 and 96 h post-infection (h.p.i.). In primary infected animals the penetration of Hypoderma larvae was characterized by moderate inflammatory responses. The pattern of cellular changes in previously infected animals suggested an allergic or rheumatic process, probably as a consequence of the development of a type III hypersensitivity reaction against the second or successive reinfections. Perivascular infiltration with CD3(+) T lymphocytes was marked in infected groups, but especially in previously infected animals, with a significant increase with respect to uninfected controls at 48 h.p.i. B cells remained close to control values during primary infection, while they increased significantly 12 h.p.i. in reinfected animals. IgG(+) plasma cells were also very abundant during secondary infections, with significant differences from primary infected and uninfected animals from 6 h.p.i. onwards. These results suggest that secondary infections allow cellular responses which may be effective in killing some of the entering larvae, resulting in a degree of resistance.

Abstract
Two methods for the classification of eight-membered rings based on a Bayesian analysis are presented. The two methods share the same probabilistic model for the measurement of torsion angles, but while the first method uses the canonical forms of cyclooctane and, given an empirical sequence of eight torsion angles, yields the probability that the associated structure corresponds to each of the ten canonical conformations, the second method does not assume previous knowledge of existing conformations and yields a clustering classification of a data set, allowing new conformations to be detected. Both methods have been tested using the conformational classification of Csp3 eight-membered rings described in the literature. The methods have also been employed to classify the solid-state conformation in Csp3 eight-membered rings using data retrieved from an updated version of the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD).

Abstract
Time-resolved small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS and SANS) in solution were used to study the swelling reaction of TBSV upon chelation of its constituent calcium at mildly basic pH. SAXS intensities comprise contribution from the protein capsid and the RNA moiety, while neutron scattering, recorded in 72% D2O, is essentially due to the protein capsid. Cryo-electron micrographs of compact and swollen virus were used to produce 3D reconstructions of the initial and final conformations of the virus at a resolution of 13 A and 19 A, respectively. While compact particles appear to be very homogeneous in size, solutions of swollen particles exhibit some size heterogeneity. A procedure has been developed to compute the SAXS pattern from the 3D reconstruction for comparison with experimental data. Cryo-electron microscopy thereby provides an invaluable starting (and ending) point for the analysis of the time-resolved swelling process using the scattering data.

Abstract
This report describes a large cell immunoblastic lymphoma in a bottlenose dolphin found stranded alive in Gran Canaria, Spain. Diffuse infiltration of round neoplastic cells was observed in the splenic cords and sinuses and in hepatic sinusoids, resulting in moderate organ enlargement. The tumour cells (immunophenotype IgG+ and CD3-) showed scant, lightly eosinophilic or basophilic cytoplasm, distinct cell boundaries and hyperchromatic nuclei, each with one or more nucleoli. Mitoses were common. On the basis of histopathological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural features, the tumour was classified as an immunoblastic lymphoma. Eleven polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners, 23 organochlorine pesticides and 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were detected in the blubber and liver. High concentrations of PCBs 153, 180, 138 and 187 found in the liver may have been associated with the hepatosplenic lymphoma.

Abstract
Reissner's fiber (RF) is a threadlike structure present in the third and fourth ventricles and in the central canal of the spinal cord. RF develops by the assembly of glycoproteins released into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) by the subcommissural organ (SCO). SCO cells differentiate early during embryonic development. In chick embryos, the release into the CSF starts at embryonic day 7 (E7). However, RF does not form until E11, suggesting that a factor other than release is required for RF formation. The aim of the present investigation was to establish whether the factor(s) triggering RF formation is (are) intrinsic or extrinsic to the SCO itself. For this purpose, SCO explants from E13 chick embryos (a stage at which RF has formed) were grafted at two different developmental stages. After grafting, host embryos were allowed to survive for 6-7 days, reaching E 9 (group 1) and E13 (group 2). In experimental group 1, the secretion released by the grafted SCOs never formed a RF; instead, it aggregated as a flocculent material. In experimental group 2, grafted SCO explants were able to develop an RF-like structure, similar to a control RF. These results suggest that the factor triggering RF formation is not present in the SCO itself, since E13 SCO secretion forms an RF in E13 brains but never develops RF-like structures when placed in earlier developmental environments. Furthermore, the glycoproteins released by implanted SCOs bind specifically to several structures: the apical portion of the mesencephalic floor plate and the choroid plexus of the third and fourth ventricles.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the location of hyperhidrosis, the accompanying signs and symptoms, and patient anxiety assessed on 2 scales and standardized psychometric instruments. PATIENTS AND METHODS A prospective study of patients with hyperhidrosis was carried out between September 1, 2001 and June 30, 2003 with a self-administered preoperative questionnaire. The variables studied included the location of hyperhidrosis, the accompanying signs and symptoms, and the self-reported degree of anxiety and perception of its effect on daily life assessed by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and a questionnaire designed in our department. RESULTS Palmar hyperhidrosis was reported by 93.6% of patients, plantar by 70.2%, axillary by 66.4%, facial by 12.1%, groin by 8.2%, chest by 5%, and abdominal by 2%. While more than 50% of the patients reported facial blushing and palpitations as accompanying signs and symptoms, approximately 30% experienced epigastric pain, trembling, and headaches. Over half of the patients reported that their anxiety was incapacitating, and a mere 1.2% experienced none at all. STAI scores were similar to those of the general population whereas scores on our department's questionnaire reflected those of the self-reported anxiety ratings. CONCLUSIONS Primary hyperhidrosis is a disorder in which excessive sweating occurs mainly, but not exclusively, on the palms. The condition is accompanied by signs and symptoms typical of autonomic nervous system hyperactivity and by a degree of anxiety that has an incapacitating effect on normal life, although that anxiety is not detected by the STAI questionnaire alone.

Abstract
We report an experimental study of the rotovibrational fundamental PQR-band shapes in the IR absorption spectra of HCl dissolved in condensed rare gases in a wide range of temperatures. The effective vibrational frequencies are determined from analysis of the fine rotational structure partially resolved in the band wings. The central Q-branch components appear redshifted with respect to the effective vibrational frequencies, their shifts in different solvents found to match the HCl stretching mode shifts in binary Rg...HCl van der Waals heterodimers. Theoretical quasi-free rotor and modified rotor models are applied to describe evolution of the band profiles at changing thermodynamic conditions. Both models are shown to reproduce equally well the observed spectral density distributions in the band wings. However, the modified rotor formalism that accounts for depopulation of the lower-energy rotational solute states provides better agreement with the experiment in the range of the P- and R-branch maxima. We surmise that the Q branches separated from the measured spectral profiles are formed by transitions between rotationally hindered states of diatomic molecules coupled to the solvent by the local anisotropy of the interaction potential.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In recent years, new atypical antipsychotic drugs have been marketed. This study aims to analyze the evolution of the consumption pattern and pharmaceutical cost of the antipsychotic drugs during the last years and the impact that the new atypical antipsychotic drugs have had. METHODS Based on the ECOM database of the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs of Spain, the sales data of the antipsychotic drugs in Catalonia during the 1990-2001 period have been chosen. The drugs have been classified into typical or classical and atypical. Consumption data have been expressed in daily defined dose (DDD) per 1,000 inhabitants and per day of treatment (DID), and cost data in constant euros. RESULTS Antipsychotic consumption increased from 3.31 DID in 1990 to 6.04 DID in 2001. Typical drugs consumption decreased (from 100 % consumption in 1990 to 46 % in 2001) and that of the atypical ones increased (from 1% consumption in the year 1993 to 54% in the year 2001). A change in the use pattern of different drugs is verified. In the year 1990, the most consumed drugs were flupenthixol (0.86 DID) and haloperidol (0.67 DID), and in the year 2001 olanzapine (1.69 DID) and risperidone (1.30 DID). The drugs with a greater increase in consumption were olanzapine, which multiplied its consumption five fold from 1997 to 2001 and risperidone, which multiplied it by 20 from 1994 to 2001. During the study period, the cost increased 13 times, above all due to increase in cost of atypical antipsychotics (from less than 1 % of the total cost in 1993 to 92 % of the total cost in 2001). The DDD cost of antipsychotics increased (6.48 euros in 1990 and 20.31 euros in 2001). However, that of the typical antipsychotics decreased (6.48 euros in 1990 and 4.62 euros in 2001) and that of the atypical ones increased (2.06 euros in 1993 and 15.69 euros in 2001). CONCLUSION The marketing of the new atypical antipsychotic drugs has had an extraordinary impact on antipsychotic drug consumption and cost. The cost/effectiveness ratio of the new atypical antipsychotic drugs in the clinical practice should be evaluated to determine the economic resources aimed at costs of the different antipsychotic drugs.

Abstract
X-ray diffuse scattering from protein crystals is, at the moment, the only available experimental process to be directly sensitive to long-range correlations between protein-atom displacements. It is shown here that calculations based on independent rigid-body displacements of individual molecules yield a description in good agreement with the experimental diffuse-scattering pattern displayed by tetragonal crystals of hen egg-white lysozyme (HEWL) In particular, it appears that molecular rigid-body translations and rigid- body rotations appear roughly in the same proportion as the average atomic mean-square positional fluctuations. The crystallographic temperature-factor analysis by TLS (translation/libration/screw) refinement, performed by Sternberg, Grace & Phillips [Sternberg, Grace, & Phillips (1979). J. Mol. Biol. 130, 231-253], is then confirmed and completed by a quantitative estimation of the molecular rigid-body translation contributions. The major contribution of molecular rigid- body displacements to the average atomic mean-square positional fluctuations, contradicts a previous analysis of the tetragonal HEWL diffuse-scattering data by Clarage, Clarage, Phillips, Sweet & Caspar [Clarage, Clarage, Phillips, Sweet & Caspar (1992). Proteins Struct. Funct. Genet. 12, 145-157] which concluded that short-range correlations dominate. The origin of these opposite conclusions mostly lies in the different hypotheses made to model diffuse scattering, underlying the limits of the 'homogeneous disorder' model.

Abstract
Propolis obtained from honeybee hives has been used in folk medicine as an anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic or immunomodulatory agent. In animal studies, the radioprotector effect of propolis has been attributed to its free-radical scavenging properties. The present study was carried out to show the protective properties of propolis extract against DNA damage induced by gamma irradiation. The evaluation of the radioprotective effect of propolis has been carried out by the analysis of chromosome aberration induction after several doses of gamma rays. The results of an analysis in the presence of ethanol extract of propolis (EEP) were compared with the dose-effect calibration curve for gamma-rays by analysis of chromosome aberrations without propolis, a decrease in the radiation-induced chromosome aberrations has been observed to be higher than 50% for all the doses.

Abstract
Patients receiving recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) therapy show wide variability in their responsiveness to the drug. Variables that affect rHuEPO dose requirements can be broadly divided into modificable and immutable characteristics. Most of the scientific research on rHuEPO hyporesponsiveness has focused on modificable variables (iron status, dialysis adequacy), while immutable variables such as gender, etiology of chronic renal failure (CRF) and age have been insufficiently explored. A cross sectional study was performed in order to evaluate if immutable patient characteristics determine rHuEPO dose requirements among 215 patients (52% males; mean age 66 +/- 14 years) on hemodialysis (HD) for more than twelve months. Data were collected at 10 hemodialysis units in Aragon. Patients were divided into three groups according to their gender, their cause of CRF (diabetic nephropathy, vascular nephropathy, tubulointerstitial nephropathy and primary glomerulonephritis) and their age (younger than 60 years, from 60 to 75 years, older than 75 years). Despite a similar dose of rHuEPO, women had lower mean hemoglobin (11.1 +/- 1.5 versus 11.6 +/- 1.7 g/dl; p = 0.0258) than men. The greater hemoglobin in men than women may be attributed to greater serum albumin in men (3.5 +/- 0.3 versus 3.7 +/- 0.3 mg/dl; p = 0.0001). Requirements of rHuEPO were higher in the patients with etiology of primary glomerulonephritis compared with those with the other etiologies, even those with diabetic nephropathy (p = 0.0374). The rHuE-PO doses required to obtain similar hemoglobin levels were higher in patients younger than 60 years (p = 0.0249). We conclude that women, patients with primary glomerulonephritis as cause of CRF, and patients younger than 60 years showed the highest requirements of rHuEPO doses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the efficacy of 4 techniques for internal saphenous nerve block with 10 mL of 1.5% mepivacaine. METHODS Eighty ASA I-II patients scheduled for foot (hallux valgus) surgery with combined sciatic and saphenous nerve blocks were randomized to receive the saphenous nerve block by one of the following techniques: a paravenous approach (n = 20), a transsartorial approach (n = 20), a femoral nerve approach in the inguinal region using a nerve stimulator (n = 20), and by subcutaneous infiltration between the tibial tuberosity and the internal gastrocnemius muscle (n = 20). A pressure cuff was placed 10 cm below the knee of all patients. Success was assessed by pin prick inside the ankle 30 minutes after initiation of the block. Tolerance of the pressure cuff and discomfort during performance of the technique were also assessed. RESULTS The 4 groups were similar as to distribution of males and females and mean weight, age, and height. Blocking the saphenous nerve by way of the femoral nerve in the inguinal region was the most effective approach (success in 95% of patients), significantly better than the other 3 techniques (P < 0.05). The paravenous approach was successful in 60% of cases, the transsartorial approach in 50%, and the subcutaneous infiltration technique in 45%. The pressure cuff was well tolerated by all patients (100%) in whom the femoral nerve approach was used. The cuff was tolerated by 70% in the paravenous approach group, by 65% in the transsartorial approach group, and by 60% in the subcutaneous infiltration group. Patients reported more discomfort during initiation of the blockade in the paravenous approach and subcutaneous infiltration groups than in the femoral nerve or transsartorial approach groups (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The femoral nerve approach in the inguinal region, with nerve stimulator, to block the internal saphenous nerve led to a larger number of successful blocks than did the paravenous or transsartorial approaches, or the technique of subcutaneous infiltration between the tibial tuberosity and internal gastrocnemius muscle.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The most unpleasant consequence of upper thoracic sympathectomy is compensatory sweating (CS). De-pending on the series, the incidence of CS ranges from 24% to 85%. The aim of this study was to determine the relation between CS and the following factors: distribution of hyperhidrosis, procedure performed (unilateral, synchronic bilateral, or sequential bilateral), and number of sympathetic ganglia eliminated. In addition, the degree of patient satisfaction was recorded as objectively as possible. PATIENTS AND METHODS Prospective study of 123 patients who underwent upper thoracic sympathectomy for palmar and/or axillary hyperhidrosis between 1 January, 1996 and 1 June, 2002 at our unit. All patients completed a questionnaire on symptoms 8 weeks before and after surgery to deter-mine postoperative changes in distribution of the hyperhidrosis and the overall degree of satisfaction on a scale of 0 to 4. RESULTS The sensation of CS was reported by 86.1% of the patients. When asked to relate this sensation to changes in sweating intensity in specific parts of the body, 46.54% reported CS and 48.37% no change. The trunk was the only region where statistically significant increases in CS occurred; in the feet, a decrease in sweating was noted. No differences in CS were observed with respect to the type of surgery or the number of sympathetic ganglia eliminated. The overall results were considered very satisfactory or quite satisfactory by 84.55% of the patients, while 4.88% were very dissatisfied. CONCLUSIONS Although CS is a side effect of upper thoracic sympathectomy, not all patients are affected by it. Significant CS occurs mainly in the back, chest, and abdomen. Neither the type of intervention nor the number of ganglia eliminated has an effect on CS. This side effect notwithstanding, overall satisfaction with the treatment is very satisfactory given that the palmar hyperhidrosis is eliminated.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze in-hospital and 2-year survival of patients who require mechanical ventilation with intubation after acute respiratory failure due to exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The secondary objective was to identify the prognostic factors for in-hospital mortality and mortality at 2 years. PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrospectively studied 101 patients with suspected COPD admitted to the intensive care unit between July 1993 and December 1998. Variables potentially related to mortality were analyzed with a univariate model and by logistic regression. RESULTS In-hospital survival was 74.3% and 2-year survival was 55.4%. Survival at 2 years was 81% for patients discharged from hospital. The variables associated with in-hospital mortality were age greater than 65 years, electrocardiographic diagnosis of chronic cor pulmonale, and development of multiorgan dysfunction syndrome. No factors predictive of mortality at 2 years were identified. CONCLUSIONS The in-hospital survival rate for patients with an acute exacerbation of COPD who require mechanical ventilation is good and the 2-year survival rate is acceptable. Age, electrocardiographic signs of cor pulmonale, and development of multiorgan dysfunction syndrome were associated with greater risk of in-hospital mortality.

Abstract
Msx1 is a regulatory gene involved in epithelio-mesenchymal interactions in limb formation and organogenesis. In the embryonic CNS, the Msx1 gene is expressed along the dorsal midline. Msx1 mutant mice have been obtained by insertion of the nlacZ gene in the Msx1 homeodomain. The most important features of homozygous mutants that we observed were the absence or malformation of the posterior commissure (PC) and of the subcommissural organ (SCO), the collapse of the cerebral aqueduct, and the development of hydrocephalus. Heterozygous mutants developed abnormal PC and reduced SCO, as revealed by specific antibodies against SCO secretory glycoproteins. About one third of the heterozygous mutants also showed hydrocephalus. Other defects displayed by homozygous mutants were ependymal denudation, subventricular cavitations and edema, and underdevelopment of the pineal gland and subfornical organ. Some homozygous mutants developed both SCO and PC, probably as a consequence of genetic redundancy with Msx2. However, these mutants did not show SCO-immunoreactive glycoproteins and displayed obstructive hydrocephalus. This suggests that Msx1 is necessary for the synthesis of SCO glycoproteins, which would then be required for the maintenance of an open aqueduct.

Abstract
This article describes the gross, histopathologic, and ultrastructural findings of the livers of cetaceans stranded on the coast of the Canary Islands between 1992 and 2000. A total of 135 cetaceans were included in the study, among which 25 were common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), 23 Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis), 19 striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba), and 15 other species of dolphins and whales. The most common lesion observed in these animals was a nonspecific chronic reactive hepatitis (47/135), followed by hyaline intracytoplasmic inclusions in hepatocytes (33/135). Parasitic cholangitis was detected in 8/135 animals, whereas hepatic lipidosis was presented in 7/135 animals. The ultrastructure of hyaline hepatocytic cytoplasmic inclusions is described, and possible causes of these inclusions are discussed.

Abstract
Streptococcus agalactiae is an endogenous bacterium that has emerged in the last 20 years as an etiological agent in both neonatal and perinatal infections, and in immunocompromised patients. The differentiation of the capsular polysaccharide, the presence of surface proteins c, X, R, and molecular methods allow classification in serotypes and genotypes. This identification is a useful tool for epidemiological purposes and virulence studies in this bacterium. The objective of this work was to study the serotypes and the antimicrobial susceptibility of isolates recovered from invasive diseases in different areas of Argentina. In the analyzed sample a fair predominance of Ia and III serotypes was recovered, followed by II and IV serotypes. All the isolates were found to be sensitive to penicillin. A 6% of resistance to erythromycin and a 4.5% to clindamycin were detected. In three of the isolates, constitutive MLS phenotype (resistance to macrolides, lincosamins and streptogramins) was founded, while in the remaining one, inducible MLS phenotype was detected. These results stress the importance of conducting a surveillance of the prevalent serotypes in our country with the goal of future prevention of this disease with an effective vaccine. The knowledge of the antimicrobial susceptibility profile will be also important to obtain therapeutic success in the treatment.

Abstract
D-003 is a mixture of very long chain saturated fatty acids (VLCSFA) purified from sugar cane wax with cholesterol-lowering effects proven in animal models and healthy volunteers. D-003 inhibits cholesterol biosynthesis through the regulation of HMG-CoA reductase activity. Rabbits fed diets enriched with casein develop endogenous hypercholesterolemia (EH), making them a very useful model for determining the mechanism of action of drugs affecting lipids. We examined whether D-003 prevented EH. Rabbits were fed a casein diet for 4 weeks, administered simultaneously with D-003 (5, 50, and 100 mg·kg–1·day–1). As expected, nontreated rabbits became hipercholesterolemic; however, as early as 15 days following administration, the treated group (50 and 100 mg·kg–1·day–1) had significantly decreased total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Triglycerides were not affected; however, at study completion, HDL-C levels significantly increased at all the doses assayed. D-003 inhibited de novo synthesis of cholesterol, since the incorporation of3H2O into sterols in the liver and proximal small bowel was significantly depressed. Also, D-003 significantly raised the rate of removal of [125I]-LDL from serum and significantly elevated [125I]-LDL binding activity to liver homogenates. Taken together, these results show that the efficacy of D-003 in reducing casein-derived hypercholesteromeia could involve, at least partially, an inhibition of hepatic cholesterol bio synthesis, which may elicit a decreased cholesterol concentration in hepatocytes, preventing the loss of hepatic LDL receptors induced by casein administration. However, since casein-induced hypercholesterolemia is also a consequence of a stimulation of cholesterol absorption in the lumen and an increase of the output of cholesterol associated with LDL, the effect of D-003 on cholesterol absorption and LDL synthesis by the liver should be investigated.Key words: D-003, very long chain saturated fatty acids, casein-fed rabbits, LDL-C, cholesterol biosynthesis, LDL clearance, LDL receptor.

Abstract
The different advances in the Micro Ecological Life Support System Alternative project (MELISSA), fostered and coordinated by the European Space Agency, as well as in other associated technologies, are integrated and demonstrated in the MELISSA Pilot Plant laboratory. During the first period of operation, the definition of the different compartments at an individual basis has been achieved, and the complete facility is being re-designed to face a new period of integration of all these compartments. The final objective is to demonstrate the potentiality of biological systems such as MELISSA as life support systems. The facility will also serve as a test bed to study the robustness and stability of the continuous operation of a complex biological system. This includes testing of the associated instrumentation and control for a safe operation, characterization of the chemical and microbial safety of the system, as well as tracking the genetic stability of the microbial strains used. The new period is envisaged as a contribution to the further development of more complete biological life support systems for long-term manned missions, that should be better defined from the knowledge to be gained from this integration phase. This contribution summarizes the current status of the Pilot Plant and the planned steps for the new period.

Abstract
This study evaluates the cross-reactivity of seven anti-human and one anti-bovine antibodies in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples of liver and mesenteric lymph nodes of 13 striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba). Four antibodies (CD3, IgG, lysozyme and S100 protein) reacted with striped dolphin lymph nodes in a similar pattern to that observed in the species of origin. The anti-human MHC class II mAb reacted strongly with macrophages and dendritic-like cells of striped dolphins, whereas a small number of lymphocytes were labelled with this antibody. These antibodies were used to study the immunophenotype of the inflammatory infiltrated in non-specific chronic reactive hepatitis (eight cases) and chronic parasite cholangitis (two cases) and normal liver (three cases) of striped dolphins. Non-specific chronic reactive hepatitis was composed of inflammatory infiltration of CD3+ T lymphocytes and IgG+ plasma cells in portal spaces and hepatic sinusoids. Lymphonodular aggregates observed in chronic parasitic cholangitis showed a cellular distribution similar to that found in lymph node cortex, including the presence of S100+ and MHC class II+ dendritic-like cells in lymphoid follicles and interfollicular areas. This result suggests that those inflammatory infiltrates are highly organised to enhance antigen presentation to B and T cells.

Abstract
An analysis was made of clinical complications, determined with objective methods, in 68 patients at the University Clinic of Navarra with the clinical suspicion of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) and presence of anticardiolipin antibodies (ACA). Patients with IgG higher than 23 GPL were considered for the study. The most prevalent pathology was thrombosis: venous thrombosis (42.6%) and arterial thrombosis (22%). Other complications were abortions (23.8% of the 42 women) and thrombocytopenia (12.1%). With respect to the localisation of venous thrombosis, predominance corresponded to lower extremities (51.7%), followed by superficial thrombophlebitis (27.5%) and pulmonary thromboembolism (20.6%). Among the arterial complications, the most frequent were cerebrovascular disease (86.6 %) and coronary disease (13.4%). There was no correlation between the presence of high values of ACA and the prevalence or severity of clinical manifestations. In the series of patients with ACA IgG>23 GPL, we appreciated a high percentage of venous and arterial thrombosis detected with objective methods. The presence of ACA constitutes a prothrombotic risk factor

Abstract
Of 14 common dolphins, 12 showed non-specific reactive hepatitis and three chronic parasitic cholangitis with lymphoid proliferation. Non-specific reactive hepatitis was shown immunohistochemically to be associated with small clusters of CD3(+) cells in portal areas and hepatic sinusoids. Polyclonal antibody against S100 protein reacted with a variable number of lymphocytes from portal areas and hepatic sinusoids, as well as with Kupffer cells and epithelial cells of the bile ducts. The majority of plasma cells observed in portal areas and hepatic sinusoids were IgG(+). In lymphonodular lesions of chronic parasitic cholangitis, the distribution of immunoreactive cells was similar to that found in the cortex of lymph nodes. The presence of stellate cells similar to follicular dendritic and interdigitating cells expressing S-100 protein and MHC class II antigen in lymphonodular lesions suggested that these were highly organized structures developed to enhance antigen presentation to B and T cells.

Abstract
Histopathological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural cutaneous changes are described in acute and subacute forms of experimental African Swine Fever (ASF). Fourteen 3-month-old Large White cross pigs were infected intramuscularly with the Dominican Republic 78 (DR78) ASF virus isolate and euthanized in pairs on alternatives days (3 to 17) post-inoculation (dpi). Three pigs were found dead at 8, 10 and 13 dpi, respectively. Antibodies against viral antigen Vp73, human fibrinogen, glycoprotein IIIa and Factor VIII-ra were used to evaluate viral antigen distribution, fibrin microthrombi and platelets in dermal vessels, respectively. Cutaneous lesions were characterised by vascular changes ranging from hyperaemia, mild oedema, scarce fibrin microthrombi and microhaemorrhages in euthanized animals, to generalized fibrin microthrombosis and microhaemorrhages in dead pigs. Secondary pustules and superficial folliculitis were observed in two animals dead at 10 and 13 dpi. Diffuse cytoplasmic Vp73 labelling was found in numerous intravascular monocytes and dermal macrophages. Ultrastructural studies showed mature viral particles in the lumen of dermal vessels but viral replication was not observed; nonetheless, microtubuloreticular structures were observed in the cytoplasm of some endothelial cells and macrophages which showed cytopathic effects, signs of cell activation or degeneration. Morphological and immunohistochemical evidences of platelet activation, degranulation and consumption were observed from 5 dpi onward.

Abstract
To choose the best possible dialysis technique for those patients with end-stage renal disease continues to be a matter of debate. Even after putting aside the evident influence that economic and geographic factors as well as the health politics may have in the selection of the technique, different studies comparing survival between hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) have shown contradictory results which could be explained by the differing methodological and statistical methods used together with the different influence assigned to the comorbidity found when starting the treatment, a situation that has increased the confusion about this topic. Based on this we performed a retrospective analysis with a follow-up time of seven years including all those patients who started dialytic treatment in our area, with a final number of 3.106 hemodialysis patients and 542 peritoneal dialysis patients. Those patients who were transferred to another treatment technique during the time of the study were excluded. Age higher than 70 years, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, diabetes mellitus and the presence of dyslipidemia were included as comorbidity factors. Peritoneal dialysis patients were younger than those treated by hemodialysis (54.53 vs 60.1 years), but suffered from higher cardiovascular comorbidity and were more often diabetic. The global survival was the same in both groups up to 32 months of treatment. Although no differences were found when comparing those patients without comorbidity factors, those with comorbidity had better survival on hemodialysis. Age higher than 70 years was the only comorbidity factor with statistically significant difference for a better survival in hemodialysis.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to investigate the expression and predictive value for outcome of multidrug resistance-associated (MDR) proteins P-glycoprotein (Pgp), MRP1, BCRP, and LRP, in advanced testicular germ-cell tumours (TGCT). Paraffin-embedded sections from 56 previously untreated patients with metastatic TGCT were immunostained for Pgp, MRP1, BCRP, and LRP. All patients received platinum-based chemotherapy after orchidectomy. Immunostaining was related to clinicopathological parameters, response to chemotherapy, and outcome. Strong and intermediate expressions of the different MDR-related proteins were: 27 and 41% (Pgp), 54 and 37% (MRP1), 86 and 7% (BCRP), and 14 and 29% (LRP). P-glycoprotein and MRP1 associated, respectively, to low AFP (P=0.026) and high LDH levels (P=0.014), whereas LRP expression associated with high beta-hCG levels (P=0.003) and stage IV tumours (P=0.029). No correlation was found between Pgp, MRP1, and BCRP expression and response to chemotherapy and survival. In contrast, patients with LRP-positive tumours (strong or intermediate expression) had shorter progression-free (P=0.0006) and overall survival (P=0.0116) than LRP-negative patients, even after individual log-rank adjustments by statistically associated variables. Our data suggest that a positive LRP immunostaining at the time of diagnosis in metastatic TGCT is associated with an adverse clinical outcome.

Abstract
D-002 is a mixture of higher aliphatic alcohols isolated from beeswax that inhibits rat microsomal lipid peroxidation in vitro and in vivo. This study was undertaken to investigate whether D-002 also inhibits lipid peroxidation in older subjects. The free radical theory of aging suggests that progressive defects in the protection against free radical reactions leads to progressive deleterious effects of free radicals on cells and tissues. This free radical damage has been implicated in several pathophysiological processes associated with the chronic degenerative diseases that occur with aging. Forty-eight older subjects were randomly assigned, in a double-blind fashion, to receive placebo or D-002 tablets (50 mg/day) once daily. At baseline, D-002 and placebo groups were well matched regarding several variables. D-002 significantly reduced the susceptibility of nonfractionated plasma samples to copper-mediated lipid peroxidation. It also significantly increased the length of the lag phase (P <.001) and the total antiioxidant status (P <.05) compared with baseline and placebo. In addition, D-002 significantly decreased malondialdehyde levels (expressed in terms of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS, P <.001) compared with baseline, but not with placebo. No significant changes on lipid peroxidation parameters were observed in the placebo group. We conclude that D-002 treatment may be useful to prevent or manage certain pathophysiological conditions in the elderly.

Abstract
First case of parotid gland tuberculosis publicated to date is presented after intravesical instillation of BCG for a superficial bladder cancer. The diagnosis of the parotid gland tuberculosis is difficult because it is usually indistinguishable from a neoplasm. Combined fine-needle aspiration cytology with PCR or LCR amplification of mycobacterial DNA could be a good diagnostic tool avoiding an open biopsy.

Abstract
The development of a loop of interconnected continuous bioreactors, aimed to provide life support in space, is reported. The complete loop concept consists of four bioreactors and one higher plant compartment. For its realization the continuous and controlled operation of the bioreactors is characterized, up to the pilot scale level, first for each individual reactor, second for the interconnected reactor operation. The results obtained with the two more advanced bioreactors in the Micro Ecological Life Support System Alternative (MELISSA) loop are described more specifically. These reactors consist of a packed-bed reactor working with an immobilized co-culture of Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter cells, and an external loop gas-lift photobioreactor for the culture of the cyanobacteria Spirulina platensis. Their individual operation for long duration runs has been achieved and characterized, and their interconnected operation at pilot scale is reported.

Abstract
Triazines are widely used herbicides that can be detected in the environment at trace level. A preconcentration step is necessary to determinate them before analysis. In this study, carbonaceous and polymeric adsorbents are compared with C18 for the solid-phase extraction of simazine, atrazine, and propazine in water samples in order to quantitate their levels by high-performance liquid chromatography using photodiode-array detection.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Kleine Levin syndrome is an infrequent disorder of uncertain aetiopathogenesis that usually affects adolescent males, producing drowsiness and alterations in behaviour, appetite and sexuality. We report a clinically typical case in which the brain SPECT showed right frontal hypoperfusion. CASE REPORT Male aged 17, right handed, who presented drowsiness, apathy, alterations in his sexual behaviour (masturbations in public and attempted assault of women) and hyperphagia, which coincided with his undergoing an emotionally stressful period in his life. Brain SPECT revealed reduced flow in the right frontal lobe, although MRI and CSF study were normal. The polysomnographic study revealed a destructured pattern of sleep, with a reduction in phases III and IV and in REM sleep. He was treated with lithium and evolved favourably without any relapses during the 18 month follow up. CONCLUSIONS Cases of Kleine Levin syndrome with structural lesions have been reported, but most of them are idiopathic. A disorder in the hypothalamus and the limbic system is suggested. In our case, the findings from the brain SPECT confirmed a non dominant hypoperfusion of the frontal lobe, which could result from a phenomenon of diaschisis brought about by a diencephalic dysfunction.
