Abstract
1. Ribosomes isolated from the cortex tissue of goat brain contain very small amounts of spermidine and spermine. Ribosomes isolated from spermidine-treated slices have a higher spermidine content. 2. The polyamines partially prevent the temperature-dependent breakdown of ribosomes into acid-soluble nucleotides. 3. The ;melting' temperature of ribosomes rises slightly when the ribosomes are heated slowly in the presence of polyamines. 4. The pH-dependent breakdown of ribosomes into protein, RNA and acid-soluble nucleotide is markedly decreased by polyamines present in media in which ribosomes are suspended. 5. The breakdown of ribosomes in the presence of high concentrations of salts and EDTA is partially checked by the concurrent presence of polyamines. 6. Spermidine and spermine make ribosomes less susceptible to enzymic digestion by crystalline trypsin and ribonuclease.

Abstract
In the rat ventral prostate gland the biosynthesis of putrescine, a precursor of spermidine and spermine, is shown to occur by the direct decarboxylation of l-ornithine. Some properties of a soluble pyridoxal phosphate-dependent l-ornithine decarboxylase are described. The findings are discussed in relation to other enzymic reactions involved in the biosynthesis of polyamines by the prostate gland.

Abstract
A method for studying inhibitors of the contact stages of blood coagulation is described. A number of positively charged substances were shown to inhibit the contact stages. The inhibitory substances include spermine, cytochrome c, ribonuclease, and lysozyme. The inhibitory effect of these substances was neutralized by the addition of an activated plasma thromboplastin antecedent, factor XI, (PTA) fraction. Other positively charged substances including protamine, hexadimethrine, polylysine, polyornithine, methylene blue, and ortho-toluidine blue also inhibited the contact stages of coagulation, but the inhibitory effect on coagulation was not neutralized by the activated PTA fraction. Negatively charged substances such as heparin and insulin did not inhibit the contact stages of coagulation. Cytochrome c inhibited Celite adsorption of a partially purified Hageman factor fraction, and cytochrome, ribonuclease, spermine, and lysozome inhibited the adsorption of Hageman factor from PTA-deficient plasma. Very much smaller quantities of Celite completely adsorbed Hageman factor from the fraction rather than from whole plasma, which suggested the possibility that plasma contains an inhibitor or inhibitors of Hageman factor adsorption. Furthermore cytochrome c, spermine, ribonuclease, and lysozyme inhibited the coagulant activity of the following activators of the Hageman and PTA factors: Celite, kaolin, sodium stearate, ellagic acid, and skin. It is suggested that negatively charged sites on these activators are critical for adsorption and activation and that inhibition results from neutralization of the negatively charged sites by the adsorbed inhibtor. Tests with polylysine polymers indicate that inhibitory activity is directly related to molecular size over the molecular weight range of 4000 to 100,000.

Abstract
Enterotoxin B formation by Staphylococcus aureus S6 was inhibited by Tween 80, oleic acid, sodium deoxycholate, penicillin, d-cycloserine, or bacitracin. Toxin formation by strain 243 was sensitive to oleic acid, sodium deoxycholate, sodium lauryl sulfate, d-cycloserine, or bacitracin. The effect of d-cycloserine was reversed by d-alanine with strain 243 but not with strain S6. Neither penicillin nor bacitracin inhibited alpha-hemolysin or coagulase activity of strain S6; however, 0.118 mumoles of d-cycloserine per ml increased the alpha-hemolysin titer more than eightfold. Pigmentation of strain 243 was reduced by oleic acid, sodium deoxycholate, or methicillin, and was completely inhibited by d-cycloserine or bacitracin. Glucose was required for the inhibition by spermine of (14)C-valine incorporation into cellular protein of strain S6. These data indicate that the cell surface may contain sites important to the synthesis of enterotoxin B.

Abstract
Groman, Neal B. (University of Washington, Seattle), and Grace Suzuki. Effect of spermine on lysis and reproduction by bacteriophages phiX174, lambda, and f(2). J. Bacteriol. 92:1735-1740. 1966.-A test was made of the hypothesis that lysis by all bacteriophages shares as a common and critical step an alteration in the osmotic stability of the infected cell. This was done by examining the effect of spermine on lysis. Spermine is one of a number of compounds which can stabilize spheroplasts and protoplasts to lysis in distilled water. Spermine stabilized both phiX174- and f(2)-infected cells at concentrations ranging from 2 x 10(-3) to 4 x 10(-2)m, but failed to stabilize lambda-infected cells at concentrations up to 8 x 10(-2)m. Stabilization was reflected both in optical density measurements and in the retention of mature phage in structures sedimentable at low speeds. At optimal concentration, over 90% of the phage was retained in these structures. These data suggest that the mechanism of lysis by phiX174 and f(2) differs sharply from that caused by lambda, and other observations suggest that there are differences in the lytic process of phiX174 and f(2) as well. Spermine also displayed a differential effect on phage reproduction. The reproduction of lambda and f(2) was inhibited by spermine, though the data do indicate that maturation occurs in its presence. The reproduction of phiX174 was enhanced by spermine.
