A behavioral role for enkephalins in regulating locomotor activity in the insect Leucophaea maderae: evidence for high affinity kappa-like opioid binding sites. Abstract
D'-Ala-2 met-5-enkephalinamide application to the cerebral ganglia of Leucophaea maderae results in a decrease in locomotor activity. The opiate antagonist, naloxone, can block this effect as well as the depressant effect of morphine on locomotor activity. D-Ala-2,leu-5-enkephalinamide and dynorphin enhance locomotor activity following their topical application to the cerebral ganglia. This effect also can be antagonized by concomitant naloxone treatment. Benzomorphans were the most potent ligands tested in their ability to displace [3H]D'-ala-2,met-5-enkephalinamide whereas mu and delta ligands were by comparison less potent. These results suggest the presence of kappa-like opioid receptors in Leucophaea cerebral ganglia. The kappa ligands also are potent in enhancing locomotor activity in addition to being weakly antagonized by naloxone. Again, these results indicate the presence of multiple-opiate receptor types in invertebrates.

Abstract
Bovine eyes were dissected and separate pools of lens, lens capsule, cornea and vitreous were extracted in guanidine, subjected to ultrafiltration, and examined for their effects on collagenolytic activity. Although lens extract was not inhibitory, the cornea and vitreous both contained inhibitors of collagenase. More inhibition was present in the filtrate of the vitreous than in the retentate, whereas the total amount of inhibition in the cornea was distributed almost equally between the two fractions. The inhibition observed was dose dependent. The partially purified inhibitors from cornea and vitreous blocked the activity of human skin and tadpole back skin collagenases, but they failed to inhibit the bacterial (Clostridium histolyticum) collagenase. The inhibitor was stable to heating to 60 degrees for 30 minutes and to trypsinization.

Abstract
A comparative trial was conducted in the United States to compare the Today contraceptive sponge and the diaphragm used with spermicide. Subjects were randomly assigned to contraceptive methods and were followed up for 1 year. None of the subjects were previous sponge users, but about 30% were previous diaphragm users. The overall cumulative 1-year life-table pregnancy rate was higher for sponge users compared to diaphragm users. No serious side effects occurred with either product. The discontinuation rates for allergic-type reactions and discomfort were higher for sponge users. Similar rates of method-related complaints and discontinuation rates for personal and product-related reasons suggest there were no differences in the acceptability of the two products. In this trial, the allowable use time for the sponge was 2 days. The sponge is now recommended for 1-day use. The overall results of the study indicate the sponge to be a safe and acceptable method of contraception with an effectiveness rate in the range of that for other vaginal contraceptives.

Avian-human reassortant influenza A viruses derived by mating avian and human influenza A viruses. J Infect Dis 1984; 150:841-50. Abstract
Reassortant influenza A viruses were produced by mating an avian virus (A/Mallard/NY/78, A/Mallard/Alberta/78, or A/Pintail/Alberta/79) with a wild-type human influenza A virus. From each mating a reassortant virus was obtained that contained the genes coding for the hemagglutinin and neuraminidase surface antigens of the human influenza A wild-type virus and the six other RNA segments ("internal genes") of the avian influenza A virus parent. The avian-human reassortant influenza viruses produced resembled their avian virus parent in that they produced plaques on MDCK monolayers at 42 C, a temperature restrictive for the human influenza viruses. In the trachea of squirrel monkeys, each avian-human reassortant influenza virus was as restricted in its replication as was its avian influenza virus parent. Thus, one or more of the six internal genes of each avian parent virus was responsible for restriction of the reassortant virus in monkeys. The A/Washington/80 X A/Mallard/NY/78 reassortant virus retained its phenotype of restricted replication in monkeys after five serial passages in vivo. It also failed to transmit to cagemates or induce resistance to wild-type virus challenge, and it did not initiate a systemic or enteric infection. These findings form the basis for evaluation of these attenuated avian-human reassortant influenza A viruses as live attenuated vaccines for humans.

Abstract
Viruses isolated during 1979 and 1980 from patients with polyarthritis in New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna Islands have been found to be more closely related to Ross River virus than any other regional Alphavirus. On the basis of virulence in suckling mice the majority of these isolates were found to be more closely related to the NB5092 strain of Ross River virus than to the prototype T48 strain.

Abstract
An influenza A virus isolated from seals [A/Seal/Mass/1/80 (H7N7)] and an isolate of this virus obtained from a human conjunctiva were evaluated for replication and virulence in squirrel monkeys. When the seal virus was administered intratracheally, it replicated in lungs and nasopharynges and induced illness almost to the same extent that a human influenza A virus [A/Udorn/72 (H3N2)] did. In one monkey that died of pneumonia, the seal virus was recovered from spleen, liver, and muscle as well as lung. After conjunctival administration in monkeys, the seal virus replicated to a peak titer in the conjunctivae 30-fold greater than that attained by the human virus, but this difference was not statistically significant. In contrast, the seal virus replicated less well than the human virus in the tracheae and nasopharynges when administered by the conjunctival route. These results indicate that the seal virus can replicate efficiently in primates, that it can spread systemically, and that it might differ from human virus in being able to replicate slightly better in primate conjunctival tissue.

Abstract
When cloned pith and leaf tissues of Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Havana 425 are subcultured for 3 d on auxin-containing medium and labelled for 18 h with [(35)S]methionine, up to 10% of the labelled, soluble-protein fraction is found in a single band with an apparent molecular weight of approx. 32,000-34,000 dalton on sodium-dodecylsulfate polyacrylamide-gel electrophoretograms. The labelling of this band, designated P33, is dramatically inhibited by the cytokinin, kinetin, in some cell lines at concentrations as low as 1.4·10(-8) M. P33 is a major component of the protein fraction obtained from non-habituated clones, cytokinin-habituated clones, and revertant subclones of crown-gall-transformed clones, but cannot be detected in clones habituated for both auxin and cytokinin, or crown-gall-transformed clones. The evidence supports the hypothesis that cytokinin in the presence of auxin regulates the production of a specific, major polypeptide in the soluble-protein fraction of the tissue and that this protein is not produced in tissues autotrophic for both auxin and cytokinin.

Abstract
Orally administered allopurinol at 50 mg/kg for 21 days showed pronounced antileishmanial activity against experimentally induced lesions of Leishmania braziliensis panamensis on the nose of Panamanian Aotus trivirgatus monkeys, with complete healing in 4 of 5, although parasitologic cure was achieved in only 2 of 5. The same total daily dose of drug, given in a divided dose twice daily, resulted in complete healing in all 5, and parasitologic cure in 4 of 5 animals. Standard treatment controls receiving 40 mg/kg of antimony stibogluconate intramuscularly for 15 days showed healing in 4 of 5 monkeys. It is not known if a similar level of effectiveness would result with this dose of allopurinol in humans, since Aotus may have a different pattern of metabolic conversion of the drug to the more active riboside.

Abstract
There are no previous reports of small left colon syndrome in twins. Small left colon syndrome is reported in 2 sets of twins. In 1 set 1 twin had clinical and radiographic signs of small left colon syndrome. The sib was clinically normal and had no radiographic studies. In the other set, both twins had identical clinical and radiographic findings of hyperplastic left colon. This suggests a genetic and/or environmental intrauterine, rather than a postpartum etiology for the small left colon syndrome.

Isolation and characterization of an operator-constitutive mutation in the recA gene of E. coli K-12. MOLECULAR & GENERAL GENETICS : MGG 1982; 187:4-11. Abstract
The recA gene of E. coli is regulated by a specific repressor, the lexA protein, which binds to an operator in the recA regulatory region. We describe in this paper the isolation and characterization of a mutant thought to carry an operator-constitutive mutation in the recA gene. This mutation has the following properties: 1) It partially suppresses the UV sensitivity of lexA- strains. 2) It maps near the recA gene. 3) It allows constitutive high-level synthesis of recA protein in both lexA- and lexA+ backgrounds. 4) It allows constitutive synthesis of the recA messenger RNA. 5) It is cis-acting. The mutation does not restore induced cellular mutagenesis in a lexA- background. The expression of induced repair and mutagenesis of UV irradiated phage lambda or the regulation of the lexA gene is not affected by the presence of the mutation in either a lexA+ or lexA- strain. These observations confirm other findings that high levels of recA protein synthesis per se is not sufficient for the expression of UV inducible functions and that the lexA protein represses other genes besides the recA gene.

Abstract
A double-blind randomized clinical trial was conducted at two sites comparing cefaclor and amoxicillin for the treatment of acute otitis media with effusion in 214 children (293 ears). Each child underwent unilateral or bilateral tympanocentesis and then was randomly assigned to receive a 14-day course of either amoxicillin or cefaclor. The symptomatic clinical response was the same for the two antibiotics, with four children considered "treatment failures" in each antibiotic treatment group. By 14 days after entry into the study 59 of 106 children (55.7%) in the cefaclor group had ears that were effusion-free as compared to 40 of 97 children (41.2%) in the amoxicillin group (P = 0.05). When considering all children with effusion-free ears as well as those "improved" from their original status (those with bilateral middle ear effusions at entry but only unilateral after treatment), 68 of 106 children (64.2%) receiving cefaclor were effusion-free or "improved," compared to 43 of 97 children (44.3%) receiving amoxicillin (P = 0.01). However, by 42 days after entry the percentage of children whose ears were without effusion or "improved" was equal in both treatment groups (68.9% in the cefaclor group and 67.5% in the amoxicillin group). The reasons for the differences observed at 14 days after entry are not readily apparent.

Abstract
Platelet factor 4, which inhibits collagenases derived from both human skin and granulocytic extracts, was found to block reversibly parathyroid hormone-stimulated 45Ca release from fetal rat bone in vitro. The inhibitory property was equally effective in both actively resorbing bones and in bones stimulated to initiate resorption.

Abstract
A prospective study of the accuracy of interpretation of radiographs by casualty officers and radiologists is presented. The casualty officers readings were correct in 83% of cases, and the radiologists' in 95%. There was agreement of interpretation in 83% of the examinations. This study indicates that there are clinical and economic benefits when the radiologist's report is available before the patient leaves the hospital. Delayed reporting of films is considered to be less satisfactory but is still of value as it increases the detection of clinically significant abnormalities and also clarifies most of the 10% of studies about which the casualty officer is uncertain. Where a delayed reporting system is practised, a25% reduction in radiologist's workload would be achieved by reporting only those films considered by the casualty officer to be "normal" or "uncertain". Attempts to reduce workload still further by not reporting any films will increase the number of patients poorly managed in casualty.

Abstract
Ninety-three children with a diagnosis of depression were admitted to a residential children's unit over a six-year period. Background and clinical data were analysed in order to identify correlates associated with the disorder and to examine the concept of 'depressive equivalents'. The results indicated that parental loss, particularly loss of father, through death or desertion, psychiatric illness in the parents and stressful events in early childhood were important concomitants of the disorder. The study also supported the current literature on 'depressive equivalents' and their expression in childhood.

Abstract
A prospective study of 500 patients was performed to determine the reasons for requesting radiographs in an accident and emergency department. Most examinations were requested either to confirm a clinically suspected abnormality or because of difficulty in excluding a significant bone injury on clinical grounds alone. Several requests were also made to reassure the patient. Medicolegal reasons were relatively few, and those made purely because the doctor feared litigation probably accounted for only 5% of requests. Undue emphasis on the medicolegal aspects of accident and emergency radiography in the United Kingdom is unhelpful in that it directs attention away from the real reasons for x-ray referral. Although a reduction in the number of x-ray examinations is desirable on the grounds of expense and radiation exposure it is likely to be obtained only by improving experience and acumen in the clinical assessment of injuries.

Abstract
A questionnaire sent to all women psychiatrists and trainees in North Carolina as part of the development of a district branch Task Force on Women indicated that institutional sexism affects the careers of many of the respondents. Problems of family-professional role conflicts were especially pronounced in residents and faculty women. Survey findings have resulted in recommendations in the areas of education, communication, and increasing women's participation in task force and district branch activities. The authors feel that such task forces provide a much needed network of supportive relationships for women psychiatrists and raise the consciousness of the district branch regarding women's issues.

Abstract
A retrospective study of 131 autistic children was made in which 2 groups, Natal and Acquired, were defined on the bases of age at onset and type of onset. Prenatal and perinatal variables were found to be significantly related to Natal onset, whereas in the Acquired group the significant variables were those occurring in early childhood, between years 1 and 3. Follow-up data on intellectual functioning and language development indicated a better prognosis for the Acquired group. An inability to cope with stress is postulated as an underlying feature in both instances, present from birth in the Natal group and occurring in the face of developmental stresses in the Acquired group.

Abstract
Ninety-seven children were diagnosed as suffering from infantile autism according to the nine points of the British Working Party and the World Health Organization classification of Mental Disorders in Childhood. Data on these cases were analyzed in terms of aetiology as known, social class of parents, year of onset, its relationship to the presence of an organic cerebral defect, and outcome in terms of the present educational placement of the child. Findings suggested that infantile autism was a disorder with a multiple aetiology and the causes, both organic and environmental, were interrelated. It was postulated that the most consistent effect present in the early backgrounds of these children was a history of sensory deprivation at a critical period of development.

Abstract
SUMMARYA modified Shigella—Salmonella medium in semi-solid agar was shown to inhibit the spread of most faecal organisms through a Craigie tube, while selectively allowing the passage ofSalmonella.A medium for routine use is described.Over a period of 3 years, in this laboratory, 90% of specimens from which salmonellas were isolated gave positive results with this medium. Over 40% of these specimens would have been reported as negative if the method had not been in use. However, 10% would have been missed if this method alone had been used. It should therefore be used in conjunction with other culture methods, of which direct plating on SS agar was the most successful in this series.
