Abstract
The 2-phosphaethynolate (OCP) anion has found versatile applications across the periodic table but remains underexplored in group 2 chemistry due to challenges in isolating thermally stable complexes. By rationally modifying their coordination environments using 1,3-dialkyl-substituted N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), we have now isolated and characterized thermally stable, structurally diverse, and hydrocarbon soluble magnesium phosphaethynolate complexes (2, 4Me, and 8-10), including the novel phosphaethynolate Grignard reagent (2iPr). The methylmagnesium phosphaethynolate and magnesium diphosphaethynolate complexes readily activate dioxane with subsequent H-atom abstraction to form [(NHC)MgX(μ-OEt)]2 [X = Me (3) or OCP (8 and 9)] complexes. Their reactivities increased with the Lewis acidity of the Mg2+ cation and may be attenuated by Lewis base saturation or a slight increase in carbene sterics. Solvent effects were also investigated and led to the surreptitious isolation of an ether-free sodium phosphaethynolate (NHC)3Na(OCP) (6), which is soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons and can be independently prepared by the reaction of NHC and [Na(dioxane)2][OCP] in toluene. Under forcing conditions (105 °C, 3 days), the magnesium diphosphaethynolate complex (NHC)3Mg(OCP)2 (10) decomposes to a mixture of organophosphorus complexes, among which a thermal decarbonylation product [(NHC)2PI][OCP] (11) was isolated.

Abstract
The synthesis, electrochemistry, and photophysical properties of a series of bis-cyclometalated Pt(IV) complexes that combine the mesoionic aryl-NHC ligand 4-butyl-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene (trz) with either 1-phenylpyrazole or 2-arylpyridine (C∧N) are reported. The complexes (OC-6-54)-[PtCl2(C∧N)(trz)] bearing cyclometalating 2-arylpyridines present phosphorescent emissions in the blue to yellow color range, which essentially arise from 3LC(C∧N) states, and reach quantum yields of ca. 0.3 in fluid solutions and almost unity in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrices at 298 K, thus representing a class of strong emitters with tunable properties. A systematic comparison with the homologous C2-symmetrical species (OC-6-33)-[PtCl2(C∧N)2], which contains two equal 2-arylpyridine ligands, shows that the introduction of a trz ligand leads to significantly lower nonradiative decay rates and higher quantum efficiencies. Computational calculations substantiate the effect of the carbene ligand, which raises the energy of dσ* orbitals in these derivatives and results in the higher energies of nonemissive deactivating 3LMCT states. In contrast, the isomers (OC-6-42)-[PtCl2(C∧N)(trz)] are not luminescent because they present a 3LMCT state as the lowest triplet.

Abstract
Molecules with different resonance structures of similar importance, such as heterocumulenes and mesoionics, are prominent in many applications of chemistry, including 'click chemistry', photochemistry, switching and sensing. In coordination chemistry, similar chameleonic/schizophrenic entities are referred to as ambidentate/ambiphilic or cooperative ligands. Examples of these had remained, for a long time, limited to a handful of archetypal compounds that were mere curiosities. In this Review, we describe ambiphilicity - or, rather, 'charge frustration' - as a general guiding principle for ligand design and functional group transfer. We first give a historical account of organic zwitterions and discuss their electronic structures and applications. Our discussion then focuses on zwitterionic ligands and their metal complexes, such as those of ylidic and redox-active ligands. Finally, we present new approaches to single-atom transfer using cumulated small molecules and outline emerging areas, such as bond activation and stable donor-acceptor ligand systems for reversible 1e- chemistry or switching.

Abstract
We report on the convenient synthesis of a CNC pincer ligand composed of carbazole and two mesoionic carbenes, as well as the corresponding lithium- and magnesium complexes. Mono-deprotonation affords a rare "naked" amide anion. In contrast to the proligand and its mono-deprotonated form, tri-deprotonated s-block complexes show bright luminescence, and their photophysical properties were therefore investigated by absorption- and luminescence spectroscopy. They reveal a quantum yield of 16% in solution at ambient temperature. Detailed quantum-chemical calculations assist in rationalizing the emissive properties based on an Intra-Ligand-Charge-Transfer (ILCT) between the carbazolido- and mesoionic carbene ligands. (Earth-)alkali metals prevent the distortion of the ligand following excitation and, thus, by avoiding non-radiative deactivation support bright luminescence.

Abstract
We report a combined experimental and theoretical study on the first examples of carbodicarbene (CDC)-stabilized bismuth complexes, which feature low-coordinate cationic bismuth centers with C=Bi multiple-bond character. Monocations [(CDC)Bi(Ph)Cl][SbF6 ] (8) and [(CDC)BiBr2 (THF)2 ][SbF6 ] (11), dications [(CDC)Bi(Ph)][SbF6 ]2 (9) and [(CDC)BiBr(THF)3 ][NTf2 ]2 (12), and trication [(CDC)2 Bi][NTf2 ]3 (13) have been synthesized via sequential halide abstractions from (CDC)Bi(Ph)Cl2 (7) and (CDC)BiBr3 (10). Notably, the dications and trication exhibit C ⇉ Bi double dative bonds and thus represent unprecedented bismaalkene cations. The synthesis of these species highlights a unique non-reductive route to C-Bi π-bonding character. The CDC-[Bi] complexes (7-13) were compared with related NHC-[Bi] complexes (1, 3-6) and show substantially different structural properties. Indeed, the CDC ligand has a remarkable influence on the overall stability of the resulting low-coordinate Bi complexes, suggesting that CDC is a superior ligand to NHC in heavy pnictogen chemistry.

Abstract
We report the facile removal of surfactants from colloidally synthesized nanocrystals via ligand exchange with N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs). Subsequent protonation of the NHC ligands in acid efficiently cleans the nanocrystals' surface while preserving their uniform morphology and structure for catalysis. The broad efficacy of this strategy is validated using monodisperse Pt, Pd, and Au nanocrystals, each prepared with strongly bound phosphine stabilizers. The surface-activated nanocrystals exhibit significantly improved catalytic activities, superior to those obtained with other surface cleaning methods, as demonstrated in two centrally important electrochemical reactions (glycerol oxidation and CO2 reduction). This work highlights a new surface activation strategy for catalysis and other applications that enables the efficient use of well-defined nanocrystal libraries prepared by colloidal chemistry.

Abstract
Intramolecular 1,2-Dipp migration of seven mesoionic carbenes (iMICAr ) 2 a-g (iMICAr =ArC{N(Dipp)}2 CHC; Ar=aryl; Dipp=2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 ) under nickel catalysis to give 1,3-imidazoles (IMDAr ) 3 a-g (IMDAr =ArC{N(Dipp)CHC(Dipp)N}) has been reported. The formation of 3 indicates the cleavage of an N-CDipp bond and the subsequent formation of a C-CDipp bond in 2, which is unprecedented in NHC chemistry. The use of 3 in accessing super-iMICs (5) (S-iMIC=ArC{N(Dipp)N(Me)C(Dipp)}C) has been shown with selenium (6), gold (7), and palladium (8) compounds. The quantification of the stereoelectronic properties reveals the superior σ-donor strength of 5 compared to that of classical NHCs. Remarkably, the percentage buried volume of 5 (%Vbur =45) is the largest known amongst thus far reported iMICs. Catalytic studies show a remarkable activity of 5, which is consistent with their auspicious stereoelectronic features.

Abstract
The N-heterocyclic silylene [{Fe(η5 -C5 H4 -NDipp)2 }Si] (1DippSi, Dipp=2,6-diisopropylphenyl) shows an excellent combination of pronounced thermal stability and high reactivity towards small molecules. It reacts readily with CO2 and N2 O, respectively affording (1DippSiO2 )2 C and (1DippSiO)2 as follow-up products of the silanone 1DippSiO. Its reactions with H2 O, NH3 , and FcPH2 (Fc=ferrocenyl) furnish the respective oxidative addition products 1DippSi(H)X (X=OH, NH2 , PHFc). Its reaction with H3 BNH3 unexpectedly results in B-H, instead of N-H, bond activation, affording 1DippSi(H)(BH2 NH3 ). DFT results suggest that dramatically different mechanisms are operative for these H-X insertions.

Abstract
A metal-templated synthetic route to cyclic (aryl)(ylidic) mesoionic carbenes (CArY-MICs) featuring an endocyclic P-ylide is presented. This approach, which requires metal templates with two cis-positioned open coordination sites, is based on the controlled cyclisation of a P,P'-diisopropyl-substituted 2,2'-diphosphinotolane (1) and leads to chelate complexes coordinated by a phosphine donor and the CArY-MIC carbon atom. The C-P bond formation involved in the former partial cyclisation of 1 proceeds under mild conditions and was shown to be applicable all over the d-block. In the presence of a third fac-positioned open coordination site, the P-C bond formation was found to be reversible, as shown for a series of molybdenum complexes. DFT modelling studies are in line with an interpretation of the target compounds as CArY-MICs.

Abstract
We report the synthesis, characterization and computational analysis of coinage metal-ether complexes supported by N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC), SIPr and Et2CAAC. The related water adducts are also included. The [(NHC)M]+(M = Cu, Ag, Au) species show the noteworthy ability to bind Et2O and H2O. This interaction towards Et2O and H2O is partly ascribed to a σ-hole bonding with an almost linear disposition, taking advantage of the enhanced σ-hole potential evaluated for such [(NHC)M]+ species. This enhanced ability is larger than those found for non-covalent interactions involving main group species.

Abstract
The phospha-Wittig reagent MesTerPPMe3 (MesTer = 2,6-{2,4,6-Me3-C6H2}-C6H3) and arsa-Wittig reagent DipTerAsPMe3 (DipTer = 2,6-{2,6-iPr2-C6H3}-C6H3) have been employed to synthesize the titanocene complexes Cp2Ti(PMe3)PnAr (Pn = P, As) with terminal phosphinidene or arsinidene ligands, respectively. Ab initio studies show that the description as singlet biradicaloids in their ground state is warranted.

Abstract
Quantum chemical calculations and NBO, ETS-NOCV, QTAIM and ELF interpretative approaches have been carried out on C-donor ligand-stabilized dihydrido borenium cations. Numerous descriptors of the C-B π-bond strength obtained from orbital localization, energy partitioning or topological methods as well as from structural and chemical parameters have been calculated for 39 C-donor ligands including N-heterocyclic carbenes and carbones. Comparison of the results allows the identification of relative and absolute descriptors of the π interaction. For both families of descriptors excellent correlations are obtained. This enables the establishment of a π-donation capability scale and shows that the interpretative methods, despite their conceptual differences, describe the same chemical properties. These results also reveal noticeable shortcomings in these popular methods, and some precautions that need to be taken to interpret their results adequately.

Abstract
Hydrogen bonding plays a critical role in maintaining order and structure in complex biological and synthetic systems. N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) represent one of the most versatile tools in the synthetic chemistry toolbox, yet their potential as neutral carbon hydrogen bond acceptors remains underexplored. This report investigates this capability in a strategic manner, wherein carbene-based hydrogen bonding can be assessed by use of ditopic NH-containing molecules. N-H bonds are unique as there are three established reaction modes with carbenes: non-traditional hydrogen bonding adducts (X-H⋯:C[double bond splayed right]), salts arising from proton transfer ([H-C[double bond splayed right]]+[X]-), or amines from insertion of the carbene into the N-H bond. Yet, there are no established rules to predict product distributions or the strength of these associations. Here we seek to correlate the hydrogen bond strength of symmetric and asymmetric ditopic secondary amines with 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IPr, a representative NHC). In symmetric and asymmetric ditopic amine adducts both the solid-state (hydrogen bond lengths, NHC interior angles) and solution-state (1H Δδ of NH signals, 13C signals of carbenic carbon) can be related to the pK a of the parent amine.

Abstract
The homolytic cleavage of O-H and N-H or weak C-H bonds is a key elementary step in redox catalysis, but is thought to be unfeasible for palladium. In stark contrast, reported here is the room temperature and reversible oxidative addition of water, isopropanol, hexafluoroisopropanol, phenol, and aniline to a palladium(0) complex with a cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) and a labile pyridino ligand, as is also the case in popular N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) palladium(II) precatalysts. The oxidative addition of protic solvents or adventitious water switches the chemoselectivity in catalysis with alkynes through activation of the terminal C-H bond. Most salient, the homolytic activation of alcohols and amines allows atom-efficient, additive-free cross-coupling and transfer hydrogenation under mild reaction conditions with usually unreactive, yet desirable reagents, including esters and bis(pinacolato)diboron.

Quantitative and Chemically Intuitive Evaluation of the Nature of M-L Bonds in Paramagnetic Compounds: Application of EDA-NOCV Theory to Spin Crossover Complexes. Chemistry 2020; 26:13677-13685. Abstract
To improve understanding of M-L bonds in 3d transition metal complexes, analysis by energy decomposition analysis and natural orbital for chemical valence model (EDA-NOCV) is desirable as it provides a full, quantitative and chemically intuitive ab initio description of the M-L interactions. In this study, a generally applicable fragmentation and computational protocol was established and validated by using octahedral spin crossover (SCO) complexes, as the transition temperature (T1/2 ) is sensitive to subtle changes in M-L bonding. Specifically, EDA-NOCV analysis of Fe-N bonds in five [FeII (Lazine )2 (NCBH3 )2 ], in both low-spin (LS) and paramagnetic high-spin (HS) states led to: 1) development of a general, widely applicable, corrected M+L6 fragmentation, tested against a family of five LS [FeII (Lazine )3 ](BF4 )2 complexes; this confirmed that three Lazine are stronger ligands (ΔEorb,σ+π =-370 kcal mol-1 ) than 2 Lazine +2 NCBH3 (=-335 kcal mol-1 ), as observed. 2) Analysis of Fe-L bonding on LS→HS, reveals more ionic (ΔEelstat ) and less covalent (ΔEorb ) character (ΔEelstat :ΔEorb 55:45 LS→64:36 HS), mostly due to a big drop in σ (ΔEorb,σ ↓50 %; -310→-145 kcal mol-1 ), and a drop in π contributions (ΔEorb,π ↓90 %; -30→-3 kcal mol-1 ). 3) Strong correlation of observed T1/2 and ΔEorb,σ+π , for both LS and HS families (R2 =0.99 LS, R2 =0.95 HS), but no correlation of T1/2 and ΔΔEorb,σ+π (LS-HS) (R2 =0.11). Overall, this study has established and validated an EDA-NOCV protocol for M-L bonding analysis of any diamagnetic or paramagnetic, homoleptic or heteroleptic, octahedral transition metal complex. This new and widely applicable EDA-NOCV protocol holds great promise as a predictive tool.

Abstract
The structure and bonding of a series of selected phosphine-protected gold clusters (Aun-P) of nuclearity varying from n = 6 to 13 were investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and compared to those of the hypothetical homologues in which phosphines were replaced by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) analogues (Aun-C). Both the Aun-P and Aun-C series exhibit similar stabilities and structural features, except for n = 6, where some differences are noted. The NHC ligands are found to be even slightly more strongly bonded to the gold core (by a few kilocalories per mole per ligand) than phosphines. Investigation of the optical properties of both series using time-dependent DFT calculations indicates similarities in the nature and energies of the UV-vis optical transitions and, consequently, relatively similar shapes of the simulated spectra, with a general blue-shift tendency when going from Aun-P to Aun-C. The fluorescence behavior observed experimentally for some of the Aun-P species is expected to occur also for their Aun-C analogues, which can be extended to other carbene-ligand-protected nanoclusters. Our results show that it should be possible to stabilize gold clusters with NHC ligands, in relation to the seminal Au13-ligand-protected core, offering novel building blocks for the design of nanostructured materials with various properties.

Abstract
A new redox-active N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) architecture is obtained using N-methylated pyrazinediimine iron complexes as precursors. The new species exhibit strong π-accepting/σ-donating properties and are able to ligate two metal centres simultaneously. The redox activity was demonstrated by the reversible chemical oxidation of a heterobimetallic Fe0 /RhI example, which affords an isolable ligand-based radical cation. The reversible redox process was then applied in the catalytic hydrosilylation of 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone, where the reaction rate could be reversibly controlled as a function of the catalyst oxidation state. The new NHC exhibits high electrophilicity and nucleophilicity, which was demonstrated in the reversible activation of alcohols and amines. The electronic structure of the resulting complexes was investigated through various spectroscopic and computational methods.

Abstract
Critical to advancing the uptake of olefin metathesis in leading contexts, including pharmaceutical manufacturing, is identification of highly active catalysts that resist decomposition. Amines constitute an aggressive challenge to ruthenium metathesis catalysts. Examined here is the impact of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU), morpholine, n-butylamine, and triethylamine on Ru metathesis catalysts that represent the current state of the art, including cyclic alkyl amino carbene (CAAC) and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes. Accordingly, the amine-tolerance of the nitro-Grela catalyst RuCl2(H2IMes)(=CHAr) (nG; Ar = C6H4-2-O i Pr-5-NO2) is compared with that of its CAAC analogues nGC1 and nGC2, and the Hoveyda-class catalyst RuCl2(C2)(=CHAr') HC2 (Ar' = C6H4-2-O i Pr). In C1, the carbene carbon is flanked by an N-2,6-Et2C6H3 group and a CMePh quaternary carbon; in C2, by an N-2- i Pr-6-MeC6H3 group and a CMe2 quaternary carbon. The impact of 1 equiv amine per Ru on turnover numbers (TONs) in ring-closing metathesis of diethyl diallylmalonate was assessed at 9 ppm Ru, at RT and 70 °C. The deleterious impact of amines followed the trend NEt3 ∼ NH2 n Bu ≪ DBU ∼ morpholine. Morpholine is shown to decompose nGC1 by nucleophilic abstraction of the methylidene ligand; DBU, by proton abstraction from the metallacyclobutane. Decomposition was minimized at 70 °C, at which nGC1 enabled TONs of ca. 60 000 even in the presence of morpholine or DBU, vs ca. 80 000 in the absence of base. Unexpectedly, H2IMes catalyst nG delivered 70-90% of the performance of nGC1 at high temperatures, and underwent decomposition by Brønsted base at a similar rate. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis shows that this similarity is due to comparable net electron donation by the H2IMes and C1 ligands. Catalysts bearing the smaller C2 ligand were comparatively insensitive to amines, owing to rapid, preferential bimolecular decomposition.

Abstract
Density functional theory calculations are employed to explore the reactivity of metalla-N-heterocyclic carbenes (MNHCs) towards activation of a variety of small molecules (H2, NH3, PH3, SiH3Ph and CH4). All the MNHCs considered are found to have a stable singlet ground state and possess suitable electronic properties for their application in small molecule activation. The calculated energy barriers of E-H (E = H, C, N, Si, P) activation for the MNHCs are found to be in agreement with those of the experimentally evaluated cyclic alkyl(amino)carbene (CAAC) and diamidocarbenes (DACs), thereby indicating the activating effect of the incorporation of an ancillary metal center within a cyclic NHC, and highlighting a new, underexplored strategy in achieving difficult bond activations with carbenes.

Abstract
Reactions involving C–F, Si–F, and S–F bond cleavage with N-heterocyclic carbenes and isoelectronic species are reviewed. Most examples involve activation of aromatic C–F bond via an SNAr pathway and nucleophilic substitution of fluorine in electron-deficient olefins. The mechanism of the C–F bond activation depends on the reaction partners and the reaction can proceed via addition–elimination, oxidative addition (concerted or stepwise) or metathesis. The adducts formed upon substitution find applications in organic synthesis, as ligands and as stable radical precursors, but in most cases, their full potential remains unexplored.1 Introduction1.1 The C–F Bond1.2 C–F Bond Activation: A Short Summary1.3 C–F Bond Activation: A Special Case of SNAr1.4 N-Heterocyclic Carbenes (NHCs)1.5 The Purpose of this Article2 C–F bond Activation in Acyl Fluorides3 Activation of Vinylic C–F Bonds4 Activation of Aromatic C–F Bonds5 X–F Bond Activation (X = S or Si)6 C–F Bond Activation by Main Group Compounds Isoelectronic with NHCs7 Conclusions and Outlook

Abstract
We elucidate why some electron rich-olefins such as tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) or paraquat (1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinylidene) form persistent radical cations, whereas others such as the dimer of N,N'-dimethyl benzimidazolin-2-ylidene (benzNHC) do not. Specifically, three heterodimers derived from cyclic (alkyl) (amino) carbenes (CAAC) with N,N'-dimethyl imidazolin-2-ylidene (NHC), N,N'-dimethyl imidazolidin-2-ylidene (saNHC) and N-methyl benzothiazolin-2-ylidene (btNHC) are reported. Whereas the olefin radical cations with the NHC and btNHC are isolable, the NHC compound with a saturated backbone (saNHC) disproportionates instead to the biscation and olefin. Furthermore, the electrochemical properties of the electron-rich olefins derived from the dimerization of the saNHC and btNHC were assessed. Based on the experiments, we propose a general computational method to model the electrochemical potentials and disproportionation equilibrium. This method, which achieves an accuracy of 0.07 V (0.06 V with calibration) in reference to the experimental values, allows for the first time to rationalize and predict the (in)stability of olefin radical cations towards disproportionation. The combined results reveal that the stability of heterodimeric olefin radical cations towards disproportionation is mostly due to aromaticity. In contrast, homodimeric radical cations are in principle isolable, if lacking steric bulk in the 2,2' positions of the heterocyclic monomers. Rigid tethers increase accordingly the stability of homodimeric radical cations, whereas the electronic effects of substituents seem much less important for the disproportionation equilibrium.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of a series of homoleptic iron complexes [Fe(benzNHCOCO)2]2-/1-/0/1+ supported by the tridentate bis-aryloxide benzimidazolin-2-ylidene pincer ligand benzNHCOCO2- (II) is presented. While the reaction of 2 equiv of free ligand II with a ferrous iron precursor leads to the isolation of the coordination polymer [Fe(benzNHCOCOK)2]n (1), treatment of II with ferric iron salts allows for the synthesis and isolation of the mononuclear, octahedral bis-pincer compound K[Fe(benzNHCOCO)2] (2) and its crown-ether derivative [K(18c6)(THF)2][Fe(benzNHCOCO)2] (3). Electrochemical studies of 2 suggested stable products upon further one- and two-electron oxidation. Hence, treatment of 2 with 1 equiv of AgPF6 yields the charge-neutral species [Fe(benzNHCOCO)2] (4). Similarly, the cationic complex [Fe(benzNHCOCO)2]PF6 (5) is obtained by addition of 2 equiv of AgPF6. The characterization of complexes 1, 3, and 4 reveals iron-centered reduction and oxidation processes; thus, preserving the dianionic, closed-shell structure of both coordinated benzNHCOCO pincer chelates, II. This implies a stabilization of a highly Lewis acidic iron(IV) center by four phenolate anions rather than charge distribution across the ligand framework with a lower formal oxidation state at iron. Notably, the overall charge-neutral iron(IV) complex undergoes reductive elimination of the pincer ligand, providing a metal-free compound that can be described as a spirocyclic imidazolone ketal (6). In contrast, the ligand-metal bonds in 5, formally an iron(V) complex, are considerably covalent, rendering the assignment of its oxidation state challenging, if not impossible. All compounds are fully characterized, and the complexes' electronic structures were studied with a variety of spectroscopic and computational methods, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and zero-field 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, variable-field and variable-temperature superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetization measurements, and multi-reference ab initio (NEVPT2/CASSCF) as well as density functional theory (DFT) studies. Taken altogether, the electronic structure of 5 is best described as an iron(IV) center antiferromagnetically coupled to a ligand-centered radical.

Abstract
Reactions between N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and the trityl cation, [Ph3C]+, give covalent adducts of type [NHC-CPh3]+ and/or [NHC-C6H5-CPh2]+. EPR spectroscopy, UV-Vis analyses, and trapping experiments imply that adduct formation involves carbene radical cations and the trityl radical. The results demonstrate that single electron transfer (SET) processes should be considered for reaction of NHCs with oxidizing Lewis acids.

Abstract
![]()
New examples of the very rare class
of iridium(I) Fischer carbene complexes (FCCs) are reported from the
facile transmetalation from group 6 FCCs. Postcomplexation modification
of either the carbene ligand or the ancillary coligands results in
a tunable IrI metal center, for unprecedented application
as a (pre)catalyst in a benchmark transfer hydrogenation reaction.
The introduction of an aminocarbene ligand with a pendant N-donor
moiety capable of hemilabile coordination yielded the best catalytic
results with turnover frequencies reaching 445 h–1 and requiring 0.1 mol % catalyst and 0.5 mol % base loading, respectively. A benchmark transfer hydrogenation is
catalyzed by an iridium(I) acyclic aminocarbene of the Fischer type
with a pendant N donor.

Abstract
Both the 13 C chemical shift and the calculated anisotropy effect (spatial magnetic properties) of the electron-deficient centre of stable, crystalline, and structurally characterized carbenes have been employed to unequivocally characterize potential resonance contributors to the present mesomerism (carbene, ylide, betaine, and zwitter ion) and to determine quantitatively the electron deficiency of the corresponding carbene carbon atom. Prior to that, both structures and 13 C chemical shifts were calculated and compared with the experimental δ(13 C)/ppm values and geometry parameters (as a quality criterion for obtained structures).

Abstract
Alkyl-substituted carbene (CHR or CR2, R = alkyl) complexes have been extensively studied for alkylcarbene (CHR) ligands coordinated with high-valent early transition metal ions (a.k.a. Schrock carbenes or alkylidenes), yet dialkylcarbene (CR2) complexes remain less developed with bis(dialkylcarbene) species being little (if at all) explored. Herein, several group 8 metal porphyrin dialkylcarbene complexes, including Fe- and Ru-mono(dialkylcarbene) complexes [M(Por)(Ad)] (1a,b, M = Fe, Por = porphyrinato dianion, Ad = 2-adamantylidene; 2a,b, M = Ru) and Os-bis(dialkylcarbene) complexes [Os(Por)(Ad)2] (3a-c), are synthesized and crystallographically characterized. Detailed investigations into their electronic structures reveal that these complexes are formally low-valent M(ii)-carbene in nature. These complexes display remarkable thermal stability and chemical inertness, which are rationalized by a synergistic effect of strong metal-carbene covalency, hyperconjugation, and a rigid diamondoid carbene skeleton. Various spectroscopic techniques and DFT calculations suggest that the dialkylcarbene Ad ligand is unique compared to other common carbene ligands as it acts as both a potent σ-donor and π-acceptor; its unique electronic and structural features, together with the steric effect of the porphyrin macrocycle, make its Fe porphyrin complex 1a an active and robust catalyst for intermolecular diarylcarbene transfer reactions including cyclopropanation (up to 90% yield) and X-H (X = S, N, O, C) insertion (up to 99% yield) reactions.

Abstract
Synthesis of the first tricyclic bis(carbenes) with facially opposed imidazole-2-ylidenes and two linking phosphorus centres in different oxidation states is presented using a modular, high-yield synthetic route. The formation of homo bimetallic coinage metal complexes provides a glimpse on their potential use.
