Spatially Confined Nanoreactors Designed for Biological Applications

The applications of nanoreactors in biology are becoming increasingly significant and prominent. Specifically, nanoreactors with spatially confined, due to their exquisite design that effectively limits the spatial range of biomolecules, attracted widespread attention. The main advantage of this structure is designed to improve reaction selectivity and efficiency by accumulating reactants and catalysts within the chambers, thus increasing the frequency of collisions between reactants. Herein, the recent progress in the synthesis of spatially confined nanoreactors and their biological applications is summarized, covering various kinds of nanoreactors, including porous inorganic materials, porous crystalline materials with organic components and self-assembled polymers to construct nanoreactors. These design principles underscore how precise reaction control could be achieved by adjusting the structure and composition of the nanoreactors to create spatial confined. Furthermore, various applications of spatially confined nanoreactors are demonstrated in the biological fields, such as biocatalysis, molecular detection, drug delivery, and cancer therapy. These applications showcase the potential prospects of spatially confined nanoreactors, offering robust guidance for future research and innovation.

Transition-Metal-Based Nanozymes: Synthesis, Mechanisms of Therapeutic Action, and Applications in Cancer Treatment

Cancer, as one of the leading causes of death worldwide, drives the advancement of cutting-edge technologies for cancer treatment. Transition-metal-based nanozymes emerge as promising therapeutic nanodrugs that provide a reference for cancer therapy. In this review, we present recent breakthrough nanozymes for cancer treatment. First, we comprehensively outline the preparation strategies involved in creating transition-metal-based nanozymes, including hydrothermal method, solvothermal method, chemical reduction method, biomimetic mineralization method, and sol-gel method. Subsequently, we elucidate the catalytic mechanisms (catalase (CAT)-like activities), peroxidase (POD)-like activities), oxidase (OXD)-like activities) and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activities) of transition-metal-based nanozymes along with their activity regulation strategies such as morphology control, size manipulation, modulation, composition adjustment and surface modification under environmental stimulation. Furthermore, we elaborate on the diverse applications of transition-metal-based nanozymes in anticancer therapies encompassing radiotherapy (RT), chemodynamic therapy (CDT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), photothermal therapy (PTT), sonodynamic therapy (SDT), immunotherapy, and synergistic therapy. Finally, the challenges faced by transition-metal-based nanozymes are discussed alongside future research directions. The purpose of this review is to offer scientific guidance that will enhance the clinical applications of nanozymes based on transition metals.

State of the Art of Silica Nanoparticles: An Overview on Biodistribution and Preclinical Toxicity Studies

Over the past few years, nanoparticles have drawn particular attention in designing and developing drug delivery systems due to their distinctive advantages like improved pharmacokinetics, reduced toxicity, and specificity. Along with other successful nanosystems, silica nanoparticles (SNPs) have shown promising effects for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. These nanoparticles are of great significance owing to their modifiable surface with various ligands, tunable particle size, and large surface area. The rate and extent of degradation and clearance of SNPs depend on factors such as size, shape, porosity, and surface modification, which directly lead to varying toxic mechanisms. Despite SNPs' enormous potential for clinical and pharmaceutical applications, safety concerns have hindered their translation into the clinic. This review discusses the biodistribution, toxicity, and clearance of SNPs and the formulation-related factors that ultimately influence clinical efficacy and safety for treatment. A holistic view of SNP safety will be beneficial for developing an enabling SNP-based drug product.

Advances in Nanomaterials and Composites Based on Mesoporous Materials as Antimicrobial Agents: Relevant Applications in Human Health

Nanotechnology has emerged as a cornerstone in contemporary research, marked by the advent of advanced technologies aimed at nanoengineering materials with diverse applications, particularly to address challenges in human health. Among these challenges, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has risen as a significant and pressing threat to public health, creating obstacles in preventing and treating persistent diseases. Despite efforts in recent decades to combat AMR, global trends indicate an ongoing and concerning increase in AMR. The primary contributors to the escalation of AMR are the misuse and overuse of various antimicrobial agents in healthcare settings. This has led to severe consequences not only in terms of compromised treatment outcomes but also in terms of substantial financial burdens. The economic impact of AMR is reflected in skyrocketing healthcare costs attributed to heightened hospital admissions and increased drug usage. To address this critical issue, it is imperative to implement effective strategies for antimicrobial therapies. This comprehensive review will explore the latest scientific breakthroughs within the metal-organic frameworks and the use of mesoporous metallic oxide derivates as antimicrobial agents. We will explore their biomedical applications in human health, shedding light on promising avenues for combating AMR. Finally, we will conclude the current state of research and offer perspectives on the future development of these nanomaterials in the ongoing battle against AMR.

Hybrid Materials: A Metareview

The field of hybrid materials has grown so wildly in the last 30 years that writing a comprehensive review has turned into an impossible mission. Yet, the need for a general view of the field remains, and it would be certainly useful to draw a scientific and technological map connecting the dots of the very different subfields of hybrid materials, a map which could relate the essential common characteristics of these fascinating materials while providing an overview of the very different combinations, synthetic approaches, and final applications formulated in this field, which has become a whole world. That is why we decided to write this metareview, that is, a review of reviews that could provide an eagle's eye view of a complex and varied landscape of materials which nevertheless share a common driving force: the power of hybridization.

Biomimetic Sol-Gel Chemistry to Tailor Structure, Properties, and Functionality of Bionanocomposites by Biopolymers and Cells

Biosilica, synthesized annually only by diatoms, is almost 1000 times more abundant than industrial silica. Biosilicification occurs at a high rate, although the concentration of silicic acid in natural waters is ~100 μM. It occurs in neutral aqueous solutions, at ambient temperature, and under the control of proteins that determine the formation of hierarchically organized structures. Using diatoms as an example, the fundamental differences between biosilicification and traditional sol-gel technology, which is performed with the addition of acid/alkali, organic solvents and heating, have been identified. The conditions are harsh for the biomaterial, as they cause protein denaturation and cell death. Numerous attempts are being made to bring sol-gel technology closer to biomineralization processes. Biomimetic synthesis must be conducted at physiological pH, room temperature, and without the addition of organic solvents. To date, significant progress has been made in approaching these requirements. The review presents a critical analysis of the approaches proposed to date for the silicification of biomacromolecules and cells, the formation of bionanocomposites with controlled structure, porosity, and functionality determined by the biomaterial. They demonstrated the broad capabilities and prospects of biomimetic methods for creating optical and photonic materials, adsorbents, catalysts and biocatalysts, sensors and biosensors, and biomaterials for biomedicine.

Polymeric Surfactant (PIBSA-X) Facilitates the Formation of a Water-in-Oil Emulsion Reactor for the Preparation of Ultrasmall Nanosilica

Despite the widespread application of ultrasmall nanosilica, solving its aggregation problem during the preparation process remains a challenge. In this paper, ultrasmall nanosilica with a controllable size and aggregates were prepared through the water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion method by using polyisobutylene succinic anhydride-type polymeric surfactants (PIBSA-X) as an isolating agent. PIBSA-X polymeric surfactants with different hydrophilic groups were prepared using industrial-grade PIBSA, which can form stable W/O-type emulsions well. Subsequently, the W/O-type emulsion droplets were used as reactors and tetraethyl orthosilicate was hydrolyzed under ammonia alkaline conditions to synthesize ultrasmall nanosilica (10 nm). Furthermore, the morphological evolution of nanosilica aggregates can be tuned by varying the oil/water ratio, which controls the emulsion droplets. A possible mechanism is proposed to explain why the emulsion method approach affords nanosilica aggregates with various morphologies and pellet size in water-in-oil (W/O-type) emulsion droplets. This study provides a precise and simple synthetic method for the development of ultrasmall nanosilica, which has good potential to be industrialized.

"3-in-1" Hybrid Biocatalysts: Association of Yeast Cells Immobilized in a Sol-Gel Matrix for Determining Sewage Pollution

This study presents a novel ″3-in-1″ hybrid biocatalyst design that combines the individual efficiency of microorganisms while avoiding negative interactions between them. Yeast cells of Ogataea polymorpha VKM Y-2559, Blastobotrys adeninivorans VKM Y-2677, and Debaryomyces hansenii VKM Y-2482 were immobilized in an organosilicon material by using the sol-gel method, resulting in a hybrid biocatalyst. The catalytic activity of the immobilized microorganism mixture was evaluated by employing it as the bioreceptor element of a biosensor. Optical and scanning electron microscopies were used to examine the morphology of the biohybrid material. Elemental distribution analysis confirmed the encapsulation of yeast cells in a matrix composed of methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) (85 and 15 vol %, respectively). The resulting heterogeneous biocatalyst exhibited excellent performance in determining the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) index in real surface water samples, with a sensitivity coefficient of 50 ± 3 × 10-3·min-1, a concentration range of 0.3-31 mg/L, long-term stability for 25 days, and a relative standard deviation of 3.8%. These findings demonstrate the potential of the developed hybrid biocatalyst for effective pollution monitoring and wastewater treatment applications.

Future of Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles in Nanomedicine: Protocol for Reproducible Synthesis, Characterization, Lipid Coating, and Loading of Therapeutics (Chemotherapeutic, Proteins, siRNA and mRNA)

Owing to their uniform and tunable particle size, pore size, and shape, along with their modular surface chemistry and biocompatibility, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have found extensive applications as nanocarriers to deliver therapeutic, diagnostic and combined "theranostic" cargos to cells and tissues. Although thoroughly investigated, MSN have garnered FDA approval for only one MSN system via oral administration. One possible reason is that there is no recognized, reproducible, and widely adopted MSN synthetic protocol, meaning not all MSNs are created equal in the laboratory nor in the eyes of the FDA. This manuscript provides the sol-gel and MSN research communities a reproducible, fully characterized synthetic protocol to synthesize MSNs and corresponding lipid-coated MSN delivery vehicles with predetermined particle size, pore size, and drug loading and release characteristics. By carefully articulating the step-by-step synthetic procedures and highlighting critical points and troubleshooting, augmented with videos and schematics, this Article will help researchers entering this rapidly expanding field to yield reliable results.

Sol-gel synthesis of Eu3+ doped silica-gold nanorod composites with tunable optical properties

Gold nanorods (AuNRs) suspension at various concentrations was added into the sol-gel process to engineer nanostructured europium-doped silica host matrices as light-emitting composites. For this purpose, the samples were prepared following two different routes depending on the chemicals used as dopant and catalyst: (a) Eu(NO3)3·5H2O and HNO3, and (b) EuCl·6H2O and HCl. In any case, samples adding various concentrations of AuNRs suspension were prepared. The structural characterization of the samples was through STEM, backscattered electrons (BSE), and EDS analysis. Additionally, their optical properties were evaluated by PL spectroscopy and CIE colorimetry. The results confirmed that (a) methodology produced samples with AuNRs embedded and randomly distributed in the samples. However, these features were not observed in the samples obtained through (b) due to AuNRs dissolution in HCl media. Regarding the optical properties, the analysis of the relative intensity ratio 5D0 → 7F2/5D0 → 7F1 suggested that Eu3+ ions occupy non-centrosymmetric sites in (a) host matrices and centrosymmetric sites in (b). Hence, the increase of AuNRs suspension when fabricating (a) host matrices produced remarkable color changes in the luminescence of the samples towards the reddish-orange region. Meanwhile, the dissolution of AuNRs in (b) minimized the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effects on the Eu3+ luminescence. These findings revealed that the evaluation and selection of chemicals are critical factors when engineering these materials for more efficient coupling between the LSPR and Eu3+ luminescence.

Recent Advances on Porous Siliceous Materials Derived from Waste

In recent years, significant efforts have been made in view of a transition from a linear to a circular economy, where the value of products, materials, resources, and waste is maintained as long as possible in the economy. The re-utilization of industrial and agricultural waste into value-added products, such as nanostructured siliceous materials, has become a challenging topic as an effective strategy in waste management and a sustainable model aimed to limit the use of landfill, conserve natural resources, and reduce the use of harmful substances. In light of these considerations, nanoporous silica has attracted attention in various applications owing to the tunable pore dimensions, high specific surface areas, tailorable structure, and facile post-functionalization. In this review, recent progress on the synthesis of siliceous materials from different types of waste is presented, analyzing the factors influencing the size and morphology of the final product, alongside different synthetic methods used to impart specific porosity. Applications in the fields of wastewater/gas treatment and catalysis are discussed, focusing on process feasibility in large-scale productions.

Anticorrosion and Antimicrobial Evaluation of Sol-Gel Hybrid Coatings Containing Clitoria ternatea Modified Clay

In this study, Clitoria ternatea (CT) was incorporated into the structure of sodium montmorillonite (Na⁺-MMT), then these new nanoparticles (CT-MMT) were added to sol-gel-based hybrid silanol coatings (SGC). The results of the CT-MMT investigation using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) confirmed the presence of CT in the structure. The results of polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests showed that the presence of CT-MMT in the matrix improves corrosion resistance. The EIS results showed that the coating resistance (R_f) of the sample containing 3 wt.% CT-MMT after immersion was 687 Ω·cm², while this value was 218 Ω·cm² for pure coating. CT and MMT compounds improve corrosion resistance by blocking anodic and cathodic regions, respectively. Additionally, the presence of CT in the structure created antimicrobial properties. CT contains phenolic compounds that have the ability to suppress by membrane perturbation, reduction of host ligands adhesion, and neutralizing bacterial toxins. Therefore, CT-MMT showed inhibitory effects and killing of Staphylococcus aureus (gram-positive bacteria) and Salmonella paratyphi-A serotype (gram-negative bacteria), and also improved corrosion resistance.

Very Large Pores Mesoporous Silica as New Candidate for Delivery of Big Therapeutics Molecules, Such as Pharmaceutical Peptides

The synthesis of a scaffold that can accommodate big molecules with a pharmaceutical role is important to shield them and maintain their biological activity. In this field, silica particles with large pores (LPMS) are innovative supports. Large pores allow for the loading of bioactive molecules inside the structure and contemporarily their stabilization and protection. These purposes cannot be achieved using classical mesoporous silica (MS, pore size 2-5 nm), because their pores are not big enough and pore blocking occurs. LPMSs with different porous structures are synthesized starting from an acidic water solution of tetraethyl orthosilicate reacting with pore agents (Pluronic^® F127 and mesitylene), performing hydrothermal and microwave-assisted reactions. Time and surfactant optimization were performed. Loading tests were conducted using Nisin as a reference molecule (polycyclic antibacterial peptide, with dimensions of 4-6 nm); UV-Vis analyses on loading solutions were performed. For LPMSs, a significantly higher loading efficiency (LE%) was registered. Other analyses (Elemental Analysis, Thermogravimetric Analysis and UV-Vis) confirmed the presence of Nisin in all the structures and its stability when loaded on them. LPMSs showed a lower decrease in specific surface area if compared to MS; in terms of the difference in LE% between samples, it is explained considering the filling of pores for LPMSs, a phenomenon that is not allowed for MSs. Release studies in simulated body fluid highlight, only for LPMSs, a controlled release, considering the longer time scale of release. Scanning Electron Microscopy images acquired before and after release tests shows the LPMSs' maintenance of the structure, demonstrating strength and mechanical resistance of structures. In conclusion, LPMSs were synthesized, performing time and surfactant optimization. LPMSs showed better loading and releasing properties with respect to classical MS. All collected data confirm a pore blocking for MS and an in-pore loading for LPMS.

Microbe-Plant Interactions Targeting Metal Stress: New Dimensions for Bioremediation Applications

In the age of industrialization, numerous non-biodegradable pollutants like plastics, HMs, polychlorinated biphenyls, and various agrochemicals are a serious concern. These harmful toxic compounds pose a serious threat to food security because they enter the food chain through agricultural land and water. Physical and chemical techniques are used to remove HMs from contaminated soil. Microbial-metal interaction, a novel but underutilized strategy, might be used to lessen the stress caused by metals on plants. For reclaiming areas with high levels of heavy metal contamination, bioremediation is effective and environmentally friendly. In this study, the mechanism of action of endophytic bacteria that promote plant growth and survival in polluted soils-known as heavy metal-tolerant plant growth-promoting (HMT-PGP) microorganisms-and their function in the control of plant metal stress are examined. Numerous bacterial species, such as Arthrobacter, Bacillus, Burkholderia, Pseudomonas, and Stenotrophomonas, as well as a few fungi, such as Mucor, Talaromyces, Trichoderma, and Archaea, such as Natrialba and Haloferax, have also been identified as potent bioresources for biological clean-up. In this study, we additionally emphasize the role of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) in supporting the economical and environmentally friendly bioremediation of heavy hazardous metals. This study also emphasizes future potential and constraints, integrated metabolomics approaches, and the use of nanoparticles in microbial bioremediation for HMs.

Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles as a Gene Delivery Platform for Cancer Therapy

Cancer remains a major global health challenge. Traditional chemotherapy often results in side effects and drug resistance, necessitating the development of alternative treatment strategies such as gene therapy. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) offer many advantages as a gene delivery carrier, including high loading capacity, controlled drug release, and easy surface functionalization. MSNs are biodegradable and biocompatible, making them promising candidates for drug delivery applications. Recent studies demonstrating the use of MSNs for the delivery of therapeutic nucleic acids to cancer cells have been reviewed, along with their potential as a tool for cancer therapy. The major challenges and future interventions of MSNs as gene delivery carriers for cancer therapy are discussed.

Lipid-coated mesoporous silica nanoparticles for anti-viral applications via delivery of CRISPR-Cas9 ribonucleoproteins

Emerging and re-emerging viral pathogens present a unique challenge for anti-viral therapeutic development. Anti-viral approaches with high flexibility and rapid production times are essential for combating these high-pandemic risk viruses. CRISPR-Cas technologies have been extensively repurposed to treat a variety of diseases, with recent work expanding into potential applications against viral infections. However, delivery still presents a major challenge for these technologies. Lipid-coated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (LCMSNs) offer an attractive delivery vehicle for a variety of cargos due to their high biocompatibility, tractable synthesis, and amenability to chemical functionalization. Here, we report the use of LCMSNs to deliver CRISPR-Cas9 ribonucleoproteins (RNPs) that target the Niemann-Pick disease type C1 gene, an essential host factor required for entry of the high-pandemic risk pathogen Ebola virus, demonstrating an efficient reduction in viral infection. We further highlight successful in vivo delivery of the RNP-LCMSN platform to the mouse liver via systemic administration.

Colored Daytime Radiative Cooling Textiles Supported by Semiconductor Quantum Dots

Radiative cooling, a zero-energy, eco-friendly cooling technology, has attracted tremendous attention recently for its potential of fighting global warming and climate changes. Radiative cooling fabrics with diffused solar reflections typically have reduced light pollution and can be mass-produced with currently available techniques. However, the monotonous white color has hindered its further applications and no colored radiative cooling textiles are available yet. In this work, we electrospun PMMA textiles containing CsPbBr_xI_3-x quantum dots as the colorant to achieve colored radiative cooling textiles. A theoretical model to predict the 3D color volume and cooling threshold was proposed for this system. As indicated by the model, a sufficiently high quantum yield (>0.9) will guarantee a wide color gamut and strong cooling ability. In the real experiments, all of the fabricated textiles show excellent color agreement with the theory. The green fabric containing CsPbBr₃ quantum dots achieved a subambient temperature of ∼4.0 °C under direct sunlight with an average solar power density of 850 W/m². The reddish fabric containing CsPbBrI₂ quantum dots also managed to cool 1.5 °C compared to the ambient temperature. The fabric containing CsPbI₃ quantum dots failed to achieve subambient cooling with a slightly increased temperature. Nevertheless, all of the fabricated colored fabrics outperformed the regular woven polyester fabric when placed on a human hand. We believed that the proposed colored textiles may widen the range of applications for radiative cooling fabrics and have the potential to become the next-generation colored fabrics with stronger cooling ability.

Composition of Organically Modified Silica for the Superhydrophobic Surface with Low Sliding Angle

Extremely water-repellent surfaces with low sliding angle (SA) have been obtained with a facile single-step sol-gel strategy via co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) in basic media with an efficient self-cleaning property. We investigated the effect of the molar ratio of HDTMS and TEOS on the properties of the modified silica-coated poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) film. A high water contact angle (WCA) of 165° and a low SA of 1.35° were obtained at a molar ratio of 0.125. The dual roughness pattern for the low SA was developed by a one-step coating of the modified silica with a molar ratio of 0.125. The evolution of the surface to the dual roughness pattern by nonequilibrium dynamics depended on the size and shape factor of modified silica. The primitive size and the shape factor of the organosilica with a molar ratio of 0.125 were 70 nm and 0.65, respectively. We also presented a new method to determine the superficial surface friction (ζ) of the superhydrophobic surface. The ζ was a physical parameter that characterized the slip and rolling behavior of water droplets on the superhydrophobic surface along with the equilibrium property WCA and the static frictional property SA.

Inorganic nanoparticles as scaffolds for bioorthogonal catalysts

Bioorthogonal transition metal catalysts (TMCs) transform therapeutically inactive molecules (pro-drugs) into active drug compounds. Inorganic nanoscaffolds protect and solubilize catalysts while offering a flexible design space for decoration with targeting elements and stimuli-responsive activity. These "drug factories" can activate pro-drugs in situ, localizing treatment to the disease site and minimizing off-target effects. Inorganic nanoscaffolds provide structurally diverse scaffolds for encapsulating TMCs. This ability to define the catalyst environment can be employed to enhance the stability and selectivity of the TMC, providing access to enzyme-like bioorthogonal processes. The use of inorganic nanomaterials as scaffolds TMCs and the use of these bioorthogonal nanozymes in vitro and in vivo applications will be discussed in this review.

Sustainable Secondary-Raw Materials, Natural Substances and Eco-Friendly Nanomaterial-Based Approaches for Improved Surface Performances: An Overview of What They Are and How They Work

To meet modern society’s requirements for sustainability and environmental protection, innovative and smart surface coatings are continually being developed to improve or impart surface functional qualities and protective features. These needs regard numerous different sectors, such as cultural heritage, building, naval, automotive, environmental remediation and textiles. In this regard, researchers and nanotechnology are therefore mostly devoted to the development of new and smart nanostructured finishings and coatings featuring different implemented properties, such as anti-vegetative or antibacterial, hydrophobic, anti-stain, fire retardant, controlled release of drugs, detection of molecules and mechanical resistance. A variety of chemical synthesis techniques are usually employed to obtain novel nanostructured materials based on the use of an appropriate polymeric matrix in combination with either functional doping molecules or blended polymers, as well as multicomponent functional precursors and nanofillers. Further efforts are being made, as described in this review, to carry out green and eco-friendly synthetic protocols, such as sol–gel synthesis, starting from bio-based, natural or waste substances, in order to produce more sustainable (multi)functional hybrid or nanocomposite coatings, with a focus on their life cycle in accordance with the circular economy principles.

From Antibacterial to Antibiofilm Targeting: An Emerging Paradigm Shift in the Development of Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QACs)

In a previous development stage, mostly individual antibacterial activity was a target in the optimization of biologically active compounds and antiseptic agents. Although this targeting is still valuable, a new trend has appeared since the discovery of superhigh resistance of bacterial cells upon their aggregation into groups. Indeed, it is now well established that the great majority of pathogenic germs are found in the environment as surface-associated microbial communities called biofilms. The protective properties of biofilms and microbial resistance, even to high concentrations of biocides, cause many chronic infections in medical settings and lead to serious economic losses in various areas. A paradigm shift from individual bacterial targeting to also affecting more complex cellular frameworks is taking place and involves multiple strategies for combating biofilms with compounds that are effective at different stages of microbiome formation. Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) play a key role in many of these treatments and prophylactic techniques on the basis of both the use of individual antibacterial agents and combination technologies. In this review, we summarize the literature data on the effectiveness of using commercially available and newly synthesized QACs, as well as synergistic treatment techniques based on them. As an important focus, techniques for developing and applying antimicrobial coatings that prevent the formation of biofilms on various surfaces over time are discussed. The information analyzed in this review will be useful to researchers and engineers working in many fields, including the development of a new generation of applied materials; understanding biofilm surface growth; and conducting research in medical, pharmaceutical, and materials sciences. Although regular studies of antibacterial activity are still widely conducted, a promising new trend is also to evaluate antibiofilm activity in a comprehensive study in order to meet the current requirements for the development of highly needed practical applications.

Engineered Living Materials For Sustainability

Recent advances in synthetic biology and materials science have given rise to a new form of materials, namely engineered living materials (ELMs), which are composed of living matter or cell communities embedded in self-regenerating matrices of their own or artificial scaffolds. Like natural materials such as bone, wood, and skin, ELMs, which possess the functional capabilities of living organisms, can grow, self-organize, and self-repair when needed. They also spontaneously perform programmed biological functions upon sensing external cues. Currently, ELMs show promise for green energy production, bioremediation, disease treatment, and fabricating advanced smart materials. This review first introduces the dynamic features of natural living systems and their potential for developing novel materials. We then summarize the recent research progress on living materials and emerging design strategies from both synthetic biology and materials science perspectives. Finally, we discuss the positive impacts of living materials on promoting sustainability and key future research directions.

Revisiting carboxylic group functionalization of silica sol-gel materials

The carboxylic chemical group is a ubiquitous moiety present in amino acids, a ligand for transition metals, a colloidal stabilizer, and a weak acidic ion-exchanger in polymeric resins and given this property, it is attractive for responsive materials or nanopore-based gating applications. As the number of uses increases, subtle requirements are imposed on this molecular group when anchored to various platforms for the functioning of an integrated chemical system. In this context, silica stands as an inert and multipurpose platform that enables the anchoring of multiple chemical entities combined through several orthogonal synthesis methods on the interface. Surface chemical modification relies on the use of organoalkoxysilanes that must meet the demand of tuned chemical properties; this, in turn, urges for innovative approaches for having an improved, but simple, organic toolbox. Starting from commonly available molecular precursors, several approaches have emerged: hydrosilylation, click thiol-ene additions, the use of carbodiimides or the reaction between cyclic anhydrides and anchored amines. In this review, we analyze the importance of the COOH groups in the area of materials science and the commercial availability of COOH-based silanes and present new approaches for obtaining COOH-based organoalkoxide precursors. Undoubtedly, this will attract widespread interest for the ultimate design of highly integrated chemical platforms.

Super-Assembled Multi-Level Asymmetric Mesochannels for Coupled Accelerated Dual-Ion Selective Transport

Asymmetric nanofluidic devices hold great potential in energy conversion applications. However, most of the existing asymmetric nanofluidic devices remain a single-level asymmetric structure and a single-ion selective layer, which results in weak ion selectivity and limited energy conversion efficiency. Herein, a multi-level asymmetric mesoporous carbon/anodized aluminum/mesoporous silica (MC/AAO/MS) nanofluidic device with abundant and ordered mesochannels is constructed from super-assembly strategy. The resultant MC/AAO/MS exhibits diode-like ion transport and outstanding ion storage-release performance. Importantly, MC/AAO/MS couples the MC and MS dual-ion selective layers, which ensures a high ionic conductance and evidently enhances the cation selectivity. Thereby, the MC/AAO/MS demonstrates ascendant salinity gradient energy conversion performance. The power density and conversion efficiency can reach up to 5.37 W m^-2 and 32.79%, respectively. Noteworthy, a good energy conversion performance of 63 mW m^-2 can still be achieved upon high working area, outperforming 300% of the performance of MC/AAO and MS/AAO single-level asymmetric nanochannels. Theoretical calculation further verifies that the multi-level asymmetric structure and dual-ion selective transport are the reason for the enhanced cation selectivity and energy conversion efficiency. This work opens a new avenue for constructing multi-level asymmetric structured nanofluidic devices for various applications.

Revealing the role of tunable amino acid residues in elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs)-mediated biomimetic silicification

Elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs) are attractive materials for the green preparation of silica nanoparticles via biomimetic silicification. However, the critical factors affecting the ELP-mediated silicification remain unclear. Herein, the role of tunable amino acid residues of ELPs in silicification was studied using three ELPs (ELPs[V9F-40], ELPs[KV8F-40], and ELPs[K5V4F-40]) and their fusion proteins (ELPs[V9F-40]-SpyCatcher, ELPs[KV8F-40]-SpyCatcher, and ELPs[K5V4F-40]-SpyCatcher) with different contents of lysine residues. Bioinformatics methods were employed for the first time to reveal the key physicochemical parameters correlated with silicification. The specific activity of ELPs was increased with the promotion of lysine content with a high correlation coefficient (R = 0.899). Furthermore, exogenous acidic protein SpyCatcher would hinder the interactions between the silica precursors and ELPs, leading to the significantly decrease in specific activity. The isoelectric point (pI) of ELPs presented the highest correlation to silicification with a coefficient of 0.963. The charges of the ELPs [K5V4F-40] at different pH were calculated based on the sequence or structure. Interestingly, the excellent correlation between charges based on structure and specific activity was obtained. Collectively, the novel methods developed here may pave a new way for rational design of ELPs or other peptides for efficient and green preparation of silica nanomaterials for biomedicine, biocatalysis, and biosensor.

Biological Use of Nanostructured Silica-Based Materials Functionalized with Metallodrugs: The Spanish Perspective

Since the pioneering work of Vallet-Regí's group on the design and synthesis of mesoporous silica-based materials with therapeutic applications, during the last 15 years, the potential use of mesoporous silica nanostructured materials as drug delivery vehicles has been extensively explored. The versatility of these materials allows the design of a wide variety of platforms that can incorporate numerous agents of interest (fluorophores, proteins, drugs, etc.) in a single scaffold. However, the use of these systems loaded with metallodrugs as cytotoxic agents against different diseases and with distinct therapeutic targets has been studied to a much lesser extent. This review will focus on the work carried out in this field, highlighting both the pioneering and recent contributions of Spanish groups that have synthesized a wide variety of systems based on titanium, tin, ruthenium, copper and silver complexes supported onto nanostructured silica. In addition, this article will also discuss the importance of the structural features of the systems for evaluating and modulating their therapeutic properties. Finally, the most interesting results obtained in the study of the potential therapeutic application of these metallodrug-functionalized silica-based materials against cancer and bacteria will be described, paying special attention to preclinical trials in vivo.

Alginate Beads Containing Cerium-Doped Mesoporous Glass and Curcumin: Delivery and Stabilization of Therapeutics

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, its genesis and progression are caused by homeostatic errors, and reactive oxygen species play a major role in promoting aberrant cancer homeostasis. In this scenario, curcumin could be an interesting candidate due to its versatile antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-HIV, and anti-infection properties. Nonetheless, the major problem related to its use is its poor oral bioavailability, which can be overcome by encapsulating it into small particles, such as hydrogel beads containing mesoporous silica. In this work, various systems have been synthesized: starting from mesoporous silica glasses (MGs), cerium-containing MGs have been produced; then, these systems have been loaded with 4 to 6% of curcumin. Finally, various MGs at different compositions have been included in alginate beads. In vitro studies showed that these hybrid materials enable the stabilization and effective delivery of curcumin and that a synergic effect can be achieved if Ce³⁺/Ce⁴⁺ and curcumin are both part of the beads. From swelling tests, it is possible to confirm a controlled curcumin release compartmentalized into the gastrointestinal tract. For all beads obtained, a curcumin release sufficient to achieve the antioxidant threshold has been reached, and a synergic effect of cerium and curcumin is observed. Moreover, from catalase mimetic activity tests, we confirm the well-known catalytic activity of the couple Ce³⁺/Ce⁴⁺. In addition, an extremely good radical scavenging effect of curcumin has been demonstrated. In conclusion, these systems, able to promote an enzymatic-like activity, can be used as drug delivery systems for curcumin-targeted dosing.

Preparation of PLGA-Coated Porous Silica Nanofibers for Drug Release

Fibrous materials have unique applications in drug release and biomedical fields. This study reports on the preparation of porous silica nanofibers, using organic nanofibers as templates, and their use for drug release. Different from the commonly used electrospinning method, the organic nanofibers are produced via a self-assembly approach between melamine and benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid. Silica is then coated on the organic nanofibers via homogenization in a silica sol, a freeze-drying process, and then a sol-gel process. In order to regulate the surface area and mesopore volume of silica nanofibers, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide at different concentrations is used as template in the sol-gel process. With the removal of organic nanofibers and the surfactant by calcination, porous silica nanofibers are generated and then assessed as a scaffold for controlled drug release with ketoprofen as a model drug. Poly (D, L-lactide-co-glycolide) is coated on the silica nanofibers to achieve slow burst release and prolonged cumulative release of 25 days. This study demonstrates an effective method of preparing hollow silica nanofibers and the use of such nanofibers for long-term release with high drug loading.

Three component synthesis of triazolo[1,2-a]indazole-trione and spiro triazolo[1,2-a]indazole-tetraones using GO/SiO2/Co (II)

In this study, a functionalized graphene oxide catalyst (GO/f-SiO₂/Co) was successfully synthesized by decorating the graphene oxide surface using the attachment of hybrid silane (silica/nitrogen) and chelation with Co (II). The catalyst has been characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectra, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and Thermal Gravimetric (TGA) analyses. The synthesized catalyst was used as an effective heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of triazolo[1,2-a]indazole-trione and spiro triazolo[1,2-a]indazole-tetraones derivatives under solvent-free conditions at 90 °C. The high thermal stability, corrosion resistance, and ability of the catalyst to recycle make the catalyst favorable. In addition, easy work-up procedure and short reaction time with high conversion yields (91-97%) are some benefits of the current method.

Novel multifunctional dexamethasone carbon dots synthesized using the one-pot green method for anti-inflammatory, osteogenesis, and osteoimmunomodulatory in bone regeneration

Bone tissue regeneration is still a major orthopedic challenge. The process of bone regeneration is often disrupted by inflammation. Elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) can lead to aggravated inflammation and even hinder tissue repairs. Therefore, inhibiting the inflammatory response during the process of bone regeneration and promoting bone tissue regeneration under inflammatory conditions are the goals that need to be achieved urgently. In this work, dexamethasone carbon dots (DCDs) were developed by a one-pot facile hydrothermal method using citric acid, ammonium fluoride, and a trace amount of dexamethasone. The obtained DCDs exhibited good biocompatibility and could promote the differentiation of rBMSCs under both normal and inflammatory conditions. Owing to the abundant-reducing groups, DCDs could also scavenge ROS (˙OH) and retain the pharmacological activity of dexamethasone, thereby reducing the inflammatory response. Moreover, DCDs presented a good osteoimmunomodulatory activity to induce a bone immune microenvironment and further promote the differentiation of BMSCs. DCDs could promote macrophage phenotype switching (from M1-type macrophages to M2-type macrophages) under inflammatory conditions, which was beneficial to the anti-inflammatory response. All in all, DCDs could reduce the inflammatory response of bone tissue and accelerate bone regeneration in combination with the regulation of the bone immune. Undoubtedly, it also provided a new idea for developing a novel carbon nanomaterial for repairing bone tissue defects.

Synthesis of Cellular Silica Using Microbubbles as Templates

In this work, cellular silica was synthesized by using microbubbles as templates, which contain a mixture of argon and silicon tetrafluoride (SiF₄). The latter is generated from decomposition of hexafluorosilicic acid (H₂SiF₆) at ambient conditions. The specific surface area of cellular silica can be as high as 130 m²/g, the size of the cavity is hundreds-of-nanometers, and the thickness of the cavity wall is around 30 nm. The cavity size, apparent packing density, and porosity of cellular silica strongly depend on the nature of the aqueous solutions; the cavity size appears to be negatively proportional to the surface tension, but thickness of cavity walls seems to be weakly affected by the aqueous properties. An attempt was made to introduce aluminum atoms in situ in the second-coordination sphere of Si atoms and/or load aluminum into the silica structure. Cellular silica with large pores facilitate the transfer of large molecules, including polymers and enzymes; thus, it could find applications in (bio)catalysis, sorption, controlled release and separations.

A review on the latest developments of mesoporous silica nanoparticles as a promising platform for diagnosis and treatment of cancer

Cancer is the second cause of human mortality after cardiovascular disease around the globe. Conventional cancer therapies are chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. In fact, due to the lack of absolute specificity and high drug concentrations, early recognition and treatment of cancer with conventional approaches have become challenging issues in the world. To mitigate against the limitations of conventional cancer chemotherapy, nanomaterials have been developed. Nanomaterials exhibit particular properties that can overcome the drawbacks of conventional therapies such as lack of specificity, high drug concentrations, and adverse drug reactions. Among nanocarriers, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have gained increasing attention due to their well-defined pore size and structure, high surface area, good biocompatibility and biodegradability, ease of surface modification, and stable aqueous dispersions. This review highlights the current progress with the use of MSNs for the delivery of chemotherapeutic agents for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Various stimuli-responsive gatekeepers, which endow the MSNs with on-demand drug delivery, surface modification strategies for targeting purposes, and multifunctional MSNs utilized in drug delivery systems (DDSs) are also addressed. Also, the capability of MSNs as flexible imaging platforms is considered. In addition, physicochemical attributes of MSNs and their effects on cancer therapy with a particular focus on recent studies is emphasized. Moreover, major challenges to the use of MSNs for cancer therapy, biosafety and cytotoxicity aspects of MSNs are discussed.

Dendritic Mesoporous Silica Hollow Spheres for Nano-Bioreactor Application

Mesoporous silica materials have attracted great research interest for various applications ranging from (bio)catalysis and sensing to drug delivery. It remains challenging to prepare hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSN) with large center-radial mesopores that could provide a more efficient transport channel through the cell for guest molecules. Here, we propose a novel strategy for the preparation of HMSN with large dendritic mesopores to achieve higher enzyme loading capacity and more efficient bioreactors. The materials were prepared by combining barium sulfate nanoparticles (BaSO4 NP) as a hard template and the in situ-formed 3-aminophenol/formaldehyde resin as a porogen for directing the dendritic mesopores’ formation. HMSNs with different particle sizes, shell thicknesses, and pore structures have been prepared by choosing BaSO4 NP of various sizes and adjusting the amount of tetraethyl orthosilicate added in synthesis. The obtained HMSN-1.1 possesses a high pore volume (1.07 cm3 g−1), a large average pore size (10.9 nm), and dendritic mesopores that penetrated through the shell. The advantages of HMSNs are also demonstrated for enzyme (catalase) immobilization and subsequent use of catalase-loaded HMSNs as bioreactors for catalyzing the H2O2 degradation reaction. The hollow and dendritic mesoporous shell features of HMSNs provide abundant tunnels for molecular transport and more accessible surfaces for molecular adsorption, showing great promise in developing efficient nanoreactors and drug delivery vehicles.

Structural Rearrangements of Carbonic Anhydrase Entrapped in Sol-Gel Magnetite Determined by ATR–FTIR Spectroscopy

Enzymatically active nanocomposites are a perspective class of bioactive materials that finds their application in numerous fields of science and technology ranging from biosensors and therapeutic agents to industrial catalysts. Key properties of such systems are their stability and activity under various conditions, the problems that are addressed in any research devoted to this class of materials. Understanding the principles that govern these properties is critical to the development of the field, especially when it comes to a new class of bioactive systems. Recently, a new class of enzymatically doped magnetite-based sol-gel systems emerged and paved the way for a variety of potent bioactive magnetic materials with improved thermal stability. Such systems already showed themself as perspective industrial and therapeutic agents, but are still under intense investigation and many aspects are still unclear. Here we made a first attempt to describe the interaction of biomolecules with magnetite-based sol-gel materials and to investigate facets of protein structure rearrangements occurring within the pores of magnetite sol-gel matrix using ATR Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy.

Pushing the limits of nanopore transport performance by polymer functionalization

Inspired by the design and performance of biological pores, polymer functionalization of nanopores has emerged as an evolving field to advance transport performance within the last few years. This feature article outlines developments in nanopore functionalization and the resulting transport performance including gating based on electrostatic interaction, wettability and ligand binding, gradual transport controlled by polymerization as well as functionalization-based asymmetric nanopore and nanoporous material design going towards the transport direction. Pushing the limits of nanopore transport performance and thus reducing the performance gap between biological and technological pores is strongly related to advances in polymerization chemistry and their translation into nanopore functionalization. Thereby, the effect of the spatial confinement has to be considered for polymer functionalization as well as for transport regulation, and mechanistic understanding is strongly increased by combining experiment and theory. A full mechanistic understanding together with highly precise nanopore structure design and polymer functionalization is not only expected to improve existing application of nanoporous materials but also opens the door to new technologies. The latter might include out of equilibrium devices, ionic circuits, or machine learning based sensors.

Toxicity of innovative antifouling additives on an early life stage of the oyster Crassostrea gigas: short- and long-term exposure effects

Recent advances in nanotechnology have allowed the encapsulation of hazardous antifouling (AF) biocides in silica mesoporous nanocapsules (SiNC) reducing their short-term toxicity. However, the chronic effects of such novel nanoadditives remain understudied. The present study aimed to assess short- and long-term sub-lethal effects of soluble forms (DCOIT and Ag) and nanostructured forms (SiNC-DCOIT and SiNC-DCOIT-Ag) of two AF biocides and the "empty" nanocapsule (SiNC) on juveniles of Crassostrea gigas after 96 h and 14 days of exposure. Juvenile oysters exposed for a short period to free DCOIT and AgNO₃ presented worse physiological status comparing with those exposed to the nanostructured forms. The long-term exposure to DCOIT and Ag⁺ caused an extensive biochemical impairment comparing with the tested nanomaterials, which included oxidative damage, activation of the antioxidant defense system, and neurotransmission impairment. Despite the negative effects mostly observed on the health condition index and AChE, the encapsulation of the abovementioned AF biocides into SiNC seems to be a technological advantage towards the development of AF nanoadditives with lower long-term toxicity comparing with the soluble forms of such biocides.

Application of Sol–Gels Modified with Natural Plants Extracts as Stationary Phases in Open-Tubular Capillary Electrochromatography

Ethanol extracts of three widely growing plants were added to silica sol–gel solutions, which were subsequently applied as wall surface modifiers in inner quartz capillaries. Modified capillaries were used for open-tubular capillary electrochromatographic separation of nucleotides and amino groups containing biological compounds (neurotransmitters, amino acids and oligopeptides). The experiments were performed at physiological pH 7.40, and eventual changes of effective mobilities were calculated. Specific compounds characteristic for each plant were tested as sol–gel additives as well, and thus-modified capillaries were used for the separations of the same analytes under identical conditions. The aim of this study was to find out possible interactions between physiological compounds and extracts of freely available plants anchorded in the sol-gel stationary phase in the flowing system. Even though the amount of the modifier in each capillary is very small, basic statistical evaluation showed some not negligible changes in effective mobility of tested analytes. These changes were bigger than ±5% for separations of nucleotides in capillaries with curcuma, Moringa or the mixture of synthetic additives as the sol-gel aditive, and for separations of amino compounds where these changes varying by additive, analyte by analyte.

Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) on Biopolymers and Hydrogels for Biotechnological Applications-Possibilities and Limits

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is one of the microscopic techniques with the highest lateral resolution. It can usually be applied in air or even in liquids, enabling the investigation of a broader range of samples than scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which is mostly performed in vacuum. Since it works by following the sample surface based on the force between the scanning tip and the sample, interactions have to be taken into account, making the AFM of irregular samples complicated, but on the other hand it allows measurements of more physical parameters than pure topography. This is especially important for biopolymers and hydrogels used in tissue engineering and other biotechnological applications, where elastic properties, surface charges and other parameters influence mammalian cell adhesion and growth as well as many other effects. This review gives an overview of AFM modes relevant for the investigations of biopolymers and hydrogels and shows several examples of recent applications, focusing on the polysaccharides chitosan, alginate, carrageenan and different hydrogels, but depicting also a broader spectrum of materials on which different AFM measurements are reported in the literature.

Robust and Long-Term Cellular Protein and Enzymatic Activity Preservation in Biomineralized Mammalian Cells

Preservation of evolved biological structure and function in robust engineering materials is of interest for storage of biological samples before diagnosis and development of vaccines, sensors, and enzymatic reactors and has the potential to avoid cryopreservation and its associated cold-chain issues. Here, we demonstrate that "freezing cells in amorphous silica" is a powerful technique for long-term preservation of whole mammalian cell proteomic structure and function at room temperature. Biomimetic silicification employs the crowded protein microenvironment of mammalian cells as a catalytic framework to proximally transform monomeric silicic acid into silicates forming a nanoscopic silica shell over all biomolecular interfaces. Silicification followed by dehydration preserves and passivates proteomic information within a nanoscale thin silica coating that exhibits size selective permeability (<3.6 nm), preventing protein leaching and protease degradation of cellular contents, while providing access of small molecular constituents for cellular enzymatic reaction. Exposure of dehydrated silicified cells to mild etchant or prolonged hydrolysis removes the silica, completely rerevealing biomolecular components and restoring their accessibility and functionality.

Alkyl Silica Hybrid Nanowire Assembly in Improved Superhydrophobic Membranes for RO Filtration

Alkyl silica membranes and wires were synthesized by a sol-gel method, which has the capacity to control the size of the particles or membranes by controlling the reactions. Trimethoxyoctylsilane (C₈TMOS) was used as a chemical surfactant; poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) as an emulsifier, dissolved in butanol for emulsion; and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as a precursor and a source of silica. An assembly of silica wires was fabricated on glass and cotton substrates by the dip-coating technique. Porous membranes and silica wires were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. The contact angles of all of the samples were in the range of 140-154° as measured by ImageJ software, which confirmed the hydrophobic nature of the samples. The contact angle was increased by increasing the amount of the surfactant. Phase changes of silica wires and membranes were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. Chemical bonds of the sample were studied using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The band gap of silica nanowires was measured to be 3.8-3.4 eV using the UV-visible spectrum and decreased as compared to that of bulk silica. These silica-based porous membranes with enhanced transport properties can be used in filtration and separation techniques. This fabricated hybrid silica membrane showed ∼96% salt rejection within a permeation flux of 3.04 L/m² h.

Characteristics of Smoldering on Moist Rice Husk for Silica Production

In order to assess the possibility of silica production via smoldering of moist rice husk, experiments of washed (moist) rice husk (7 kg with moisture content of 51%) in a newly designed smoldering apparatus was performed. The temperature inside the fuel bed during smoldering was recorded, and characteristics of ash were analyzed. Results showed that the highest temperature in the middle of the naturally piled fuel bed was about 560.0 °C, lower than those in most of combustors. Some volatiles from the lower part of the fuel bed adhere to its upper ash during piled smoldering. Silica content and specific surface area of ash from smoldering of washed (moist) rice husk were 86.4% and 84.9 m2/g, respectively. Compared to our experiments, they are close to smoldering of unwashed rice husk (89.0%, 67.7 m2/g); different from muffle furnace burning (600 °C, 2 h) of washed (93.4%, 164.9 m2/g) and un-washed (90.2%, 45.7 m2/g) rice husk. The specific surface area is higher than those from most industrial methods (from 11.4 to 39.3 m2/g). After some improvements, the smoldering process has great potential in mass product of high quality silica directly from moist rice husk.

Cefixime-Containing Silica Nanoseeds Coated by a Hybrid PVA-Gold Network with a Cys-Arg Dipeptide Conjugation: Enhanced Antimicrobial and Drug Release Properties

Therapeutic nano-bioconjugates (TNBCs) as an advanced class of drug delivery systems have attracted much attention due to more efficacy than the individual medications. Hence, in this study, a novel anti-infection TNBC system is designed based on highly porous silica nanoparticles, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), and hybridized polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) for the efficient delivery of cefixime (CFM). Furthermore, a conjugation of cysteine-arginine (CR) dipeptide is made onto the surfaces for the enhancement of cell adhesion. Concisely, the AuNPs incorporated inside the PVA network play the key role in the controlled release process triggered by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) heating. The drug content of the CFM-containing cargo (named as CFM@SiO₂/PVA/Au-CR) and related release profile have been precisely studied by the confirmed analytical methods. Eventually, confocal microscopy on the stained cells has revealed that the TNBC particles are capable of entering the Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) bacterial cells better than the individual CFM. Also, optical density experiments (OD₆₀₀) have corroborated that the prepared CFM@SiO₂/PVA/Au-CR TNBC includes a high antimicrobial effect on K. pneumoniae and E. coli cells with (93.0 ± 1.5) % and (86.8 ± 1.0) % success rates, respectively, whereas the same dosage of the individual CFM has shown a lower effect on the cell growth rate. Also, estimation of minimum inhibitory/bactericidal concentrations (MIC/MBC) confirmed the enhanced antibacterial property of the CFM through the presented delivery method. Overall, this product is suggested to be clinically administrated instead of the individual CFM due to its high efficacy and containing lower dosage of the antibiotic drug.

Interfacial Assembly and Applications of Functional Mesoporous Materials

Functional mesoporous materials have gained tremendous attention due to their distinctive properties and potential applications. In recent decades, the self-assembly of micelles and framework precursors into mesostructures on the liquid-solid, liquid-liquid, and gas-liquid interface has been explored in the construction of functional mesoporous materials with diverse compositions, morphologies, mesostructures, and pore sizes. Compared with the one-phase solution synthetic approach, the introduction of a two-phase interface in the synthetic system changes self-assembly behaviors between micelles and framework species, leading to the possibility for the on-demand fabrication of unique mesoporous architectures. In addition, controlling the interfacial tension is critical to manipulate the self-assembly process for precise synthesis. In particular, recent breakthroughs based on the concept of the "monomicelles" assembly mechanism are very promising and interesting for the synthesis of functional mesoporous materials with the precise control. In this review, we highlight the synthetic strategies, principles, and interface engineering at the macroscale, microscale, and nanoscale for oriented interfacial assembly of functional mesoporous materials over the past 10 years. The potential applications in various fields, including adsorption, separation, sensors, catalysis, energy storage, solar cells, and biomedicine, are discussed. Finally, we also propose the remaining challenges, possible directions, and opportunities in this field for the future outlook.

Solvent Mediating the in Situ Self-Assembly of Polysaccharides for 3D Printing Biomimetic Tissue Scaffolds

Intensively studied 3D printing technology is frequently hindered by the effective printable ink preparation method. Herein, we propose an elegant and gentle solvent consumption strategy to slowly disrupt the thermodynamic stability of the biopolymer (polysaccharide: cellulose, chitin, and chitosan) solution to slightly induce the molecule chains to in situ self-assemble into nanostructures for regulating the rheological properties, eventually achieving the acceptable printability. The polysaccharides are dissolved in the alkali/urea solvent. The weak Lewis acid fumed silica (as solvent mediator) is used to (i) slowly and partially consume the alkali/urea solvent to induce the polysaccharide chains to self-assemble into nanofibers to form a percolating network in a limited scale without leading to gelation and (ii) act as the support to increase the solution modulus, for achieving superior printability and scaffold design flexibility. As a demonstration, the resulting polysaccharide scaffolds with biomimetic nanofibrous structures exhibit superior performances in both the cell-free and cell-loaded bone tissue engineering strategies, showing the potential in tissue engineering. Moreover, the fumed silica could be completely removed by alkali treatment without defecting the nanofibrous structure, showing the potential in various applications. We anticipate our solvent-mediated 3D printing ink preparation concept could be used to fabricate other polymeric facile inks and for widespread applications in diverse fields.

Anticorrosion and Cytocompatibility Assessment of Graphene-Doped Hybrid Silica and Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation Coatings for Biomedical Applications

Magnesium AZ31 alloy substrates were coated with different coatings, including sol–gel silica-reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets, sol–gel silica, plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), and combinations of them, to improve cytocompatibility and control the corrosion rate. Electrochemical corrosion tests, as well as hydrogen evolution tests, were carried out using Hanks’ solution as the electrolyte to assess the anticorrosion behavior of the different coating systems in a simulated body fluid. Preliminary cytocompatibility assessment of the different coating systems was carried out by measuring the metabolic activity, deoxyribonucleic acid quantification, and the cell growth of premyoblastic C2C12-GFP cell cultures on the surface of the different coating systems. Anticorrosion behavior and cytocompatibility were improved with the application of the different coating systems. The use of combined PEO + SG and PEO + SG/GNP coatings significantly decreased the degradation of the specimens. The monolayer sol–gel coatings, with and without GNPs, presented the best cytocompatibility improvement.
