Abstract
Phosphorus is a critical nutrient that significantly enhances tomato production, so maintaining an adequate level of phosphorus plays an essential role in enhancing the growth of tomato by being present in the soil. This study assessed the impact of soil texture and phosphorus content on tomato plant properties using a factorial, complete, randomized design with four replications. Treatments included clayey and sandy soils with varying phosphorus sources: non-phosphorus (P0), calcium phosphate (CaP1 and CaP2), and nano-hydroxyapatite (PN1 and PN2), where 1 indicates a concentration of 0.12 g and 2 indicates a concentration of 0.23 g per 5-kilogram pot of fertilizer. Results indicated that treatments significantly influenced yield parameters such as average fruit weight, juice content, antioxidant activity, and fruit volume. In the clayey soil, CaP2 treatment had a superior effect on yield, average fruit weight, and shoot fresh weight. In comparison with sandy conditions, CaP2 produced a 50% increase in fruit number, 29% increase in average fruit weight, and 91% increase in fruit yield. The treatments then impacted the shoot fresh weight and root length, while the phosphorus concentration appeared to be more dependent on soil type than on phosphorus sources. Similar to the CaP1 and CaP2 treatments, the PN1 treatment in clay soil also resulted in the highest fresh and dry weights of tomato shoots when compared with the control group. Generally, the findings from this study suggest that the use of CaP2 can serve as a reliable method to improve the growth, yield, and fruit quality of tomatoes, especially in clayey soil environments. However, nano-based phosphorous sources need to be tested more to see if they can improve tomato performance in a range of soil conditions. Also, further research should look into the long-term effects of phosphorous interventions on soil health and sustainability.

Abstract
Leaf nitrogen content (LNC) is an important indicator for scientific diagnosis of the nutrition status of crops. It plays an important role in the growth, yield and quality of wolfberry. This study aimed to develop new spectral indices (NSIs) and constructed machine learning regression (MLR) models for predicting wolfberry tree LNC. By utilizing four smoothing methods and five mathematic transformation methods, we obtained the original spectral dataset and five spectral transformation datasets for quantitative analysis and model establishment. Subsequently, published vegetation indices (PVIs) were acquired, sensitive wavelengths (SWs) were screened and NSIs were calculated based on SWs. Then MLR models were constructed by combining NSIs from six spectral datasets with three machine learning algorithms. Finally, a comparison was made among the MLR models. The study indicated that the application of mathematical transformation highlighted the differences in spectra, the square root, first-derivative and second-derivative transformation improved the prediction accuracy of MLR models constructed based on NSIs (MLR-NSIs models). However, these transformations had little impact on improving the prediction ability of MLR models constructed based on PVIs (MLR-PVIs models). Additionally, The optimal model for predicting the LNC of wolfberry tree was obtained by using the Random Forest (RF) algorithm combined with NSIs developed by first-derivative transformation spectra. The determination coefficient of validation (Rv2) and ratio of percentage deviation (RPD) was 0.71 and 1.90, respectively. In conclusion, this study has demonstrated that the combination of hyperspectral transformation and machine learning is useful for improving the accuracy of LNC estimation in wolfberry trees.

Abstract
Rapid detection of plant phenotypic traits is crucial for plant breeding and cultivation. Traditional measurement methods are carried out by rich-experienced agronomists, which are time-consuming and labor-intensive. However, with the increasing demand for rapid and high-throughput testing in tea plants traits, digital breeding and smart cultivation of tea plants rely heavily on precise plant phenotypic trait measurement techniques, among which hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology stands out for its ability to provide real-time and rich-information. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of the principles of hyperspectral imaging technology, the processing methods of cubic data, and relevant algorithms in tea plant phenomics, reviewing the progress of applying hyperspectral imaging technology to obtain information on tea plant phenotypes, growth conditions, and quality indicators under environmental stress. Lastly, we discuss the challenges faced by HSI technology in the detection of tea plant phenotypic traits from different perspectives, propose possible solutions, and envision the potential development prospects of HSI technology in the digital breeding and smart cultivation of tea plants. This review aims to provide theoretical and technical support for the application of HSI technology in detecting tea plant phenotypic information, further promoting the trend of developing high quality and high yield tea leaves.

Abstract
The wide gap between the demand and supply of edible mustard oil can be overcome to a certain extent by enhancing the oil-recovery during mechanical oil expression. It has been reported that microwave (MW) pre-treatment of mustard seeds can have a positive effect on the availability of mechanically expressible oil. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) was used to understand the change in spatial spread of oil in the microwave (MW) treated seeds with bed thickness and time of exposure as variables, using visible near-infrared (Vis-NIR, 400-1000 nm) and short-wave infrared (SWIR, 1000-1700 nm) systems. The spectral data was analysed using chemometric techniques such as partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and regression (PLSR) to develop prediction models. The PLS-DA model demonstrated a strong capability to classify the mustard seeds subjected to different MW pre-treatments from control samples with a high accuracy level of 96.6 and 99.5% for Vis-NIR and SWIR-HSI, respectively. PLSR model developed with SWIR-HSI spectral data predicted (R2 > 0.90) the oil content and fatty acid components such as oleic acid, erucic acid, saturated fatty acids, and PUFAs closest to the results obtained by analytical techniques. However, these predictions (R2 > 0.70) were less accurate while using the Vis-NIR spectral data.

Abstract
As the raw material for tea making, the quality of tea leaves directly affects the quality of finished tea. The quality of fresh tea leaves is mainly assessed by manual judgment or physical and chemical testing of the content of internal components. Physical and chemical methods are more mature, and the test results are more accurate and objective, but traditional chemical methods for measuring the biochemical indexes of tea leaves are time-consuming, labor-costly, complicated, and destructive. With the rapid development of imaging and spectroscopic technology, spectroscopic technology as an emerging technology has been widely used in rapid non-destructive testing of the quality and safety of agricultural products. Due to the existence of spectral information with a low signal-to-noise ratio, high information redundancy, and strong autocorrelation, scholars have conducted a series of studies on spectral data preprocessing. The correlation between spectral data and target data is improved by smoothing noise reduction, correction, extraction of feature bands, and so on, to construct a stable, highly accurate estimation or discrimination model with strong generalization ability. There have been more research papers published on spectroscopic techniques to detect the quality of tea fresh leaves. This study summarizes the principles, analytical methods, and applications of Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) in the nondestructive testing of the quality and safety of fresh tea leaves for the purpose of tracking the latest research advances at home and abroad. At the same time, the principles and applications of other spectroscopic techniques including Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), Mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIRS), Raman spectroscopy (RS), and other spectroscopic techniques for non-destructive testing of quality and safety of fresh tea leaves are also briefly introduced. Finally, in terms of technical obstacles and practical applications, the challenges and development trends of spectral analysis technology in the nondestructive assessment of tea leaf quality are examined.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intelligent monitoring of fixation quality is a prerequisite for automated green tea processing. To meet the requirements of intelligent monitoring of fixation quality in large-scale production, fast and non-destructive detection means are urgently needed. Here, smartphone-coupled micro near-infrared spectroscopy and a self-built computer vision system were used to perform rapid detection of the fixation quality in green tea processing lines. RESULTS Spectral and image information from green tea samples with different fixation degrees were collected at-line by two intelligent monitoring sensors. Competitive adaptive reweighted sampling and correlation analysis were employed to select feature variables from spectral and color information as the target data for modeling, respectively. The developed least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) model by spectral information and the LS-SVM model by image information achieved the best discriminations of sample fixation degree, with both prediction set accuracies of 100%. Compared to the spectral information, the image information-based support vector regression model performed better in moisture prediction, with a correlation coefficient of prediction of 0.9884 and residual predictive deviation of 6.46. CONCLUSION The present study provided a rapid and low-cost means of monitoring fixation quality, and also provided theoretical support and technical guidance for the automation of the green tea fixation process. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Agriculture is facing the challenge of feeding the ever-growing population that is projected to reach ten billion by 2050. While improving crop yield and productivity can address this challenge, the increasing effects of global warming and climate change seriously threaten agricultural productivity. Thus, genomics and genome modification technologies are crucial to improving climate-resilient traits to enable sustained yield and productivity; however, significant research focuses on staple crops such as rice, wheat, and maize. Crops that are naturally climate-resilient and nutritionally superior to staple cereals, such as small millets, remain neglected and underutilized by mainstream research. The ability of small millets to grow in marginal regions having limited irrigation and poor soil fertility makes these crops a better choice for cultivation in arid and semi-arid areas. Hence, mainstreaming small millets for cultivation and using omics technologies to dissect the climate-resilient traits to identify the molecular determinants underlying these traits are imperative for addressing food and nutritional security. In this context, the review discusses the genomics and genome modification approaches for dissecting key traits in small millets and their application for improving these traits in cultivated germplasm. The review also discusses biofortification for nutritional security and machine-learning approaches for trait improvement in small millets. Altogether, the review provides a roadmap for the effective use of next-generation approaches for trait improvement in small millets. This will lead to the development of improved varieties for addressing multiple insecurities prevailing in the present climate change scenario.

Abstract
Lettuce is an important vegetable in the human diet and is commonly consumed for salad. It is a source of vitamin A, which plays a vital role in human health. Improvements in lettuce production will be needed to ensure a stable and economically available supply in the future. The influence of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) compounds on the growth dynamics of four hydroponically grown lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) cultivars (Black Seeded Simpson, Parris Island, Rex RZ, and Tacitus) in tubs and in a nutrient film technique (NFT) system were studied. Hyperspectral images (HSI) were captured at plant harvest. Models developed from the HSI data were used to estimate nutrient levels of leaf tissues by employing principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares regression (PLSR), multivariate regression, and variable importance projection (VIP) methods. The optimal wavebands were found in six regions, including 390.57-438.02, 497-550, 551-600, 681.34-774, 802-821, and 822-838 nm for tub-grown lettuces and four regions, namely 390.57-438.02, 497-550, 551-600, and 681.34-774 nm for NFT-system-grown lettuces. These fitted models' levels showed high accuracy (R2=0.85-0.99) in estimating the growth dynamics of the studied lettuce cultivars in terms of nutrient content. HSI data of the lettuce leaves and applied N solutions demonstrated a direct positive correlation with an accuracy of 0.82-0.99 for blue and green regions in 400-575 nm wavebands. The results proved that, in most of the tested multivariate regression models, HSI data of freshly cut leaves correlated well with laboratory-measured data.

Nitrogen Balance Index Prediction of Winter Wheat by Canopy Hyperspectral Transformation and Machine Learning. REMOTE SENSING 2022. Abstract
Nitrogen balance index (NBI) is an important indicator for scientific diagnostic and quantitative research on crop growth status. The quick and accurate assessment of NBI is necessary for farmers to make timely N management decisions. The objective of the study was to estimate winter wheat NBI based on canopy hyperspectral features between 400–1350 nm combined with machine learning (ML) methods in the individual and whole growth stages. In this study, 3 years of winter wheat plot experiments were conducted. Ground-level canopy hyperspectral reflectance and corresponding plant NBI values were measured during the jointing, booting, flowering and filling stages. Continuous removal spectra (CRS) and logarithmic transformation spectra (LOGS) were derived from the original canopy spectra. Sensitive bands and vegetation indices (VIs) highly correlated with NBI under different spectral transformations were selected as hyperspectral features to construct the NBI estimation models combined with ML algorithms. The study indicated that the spectral transformation significantly improved the correlation between the sensitive bands, VIs and the NBI. The correlation coefficient of the sensitive band in CRS in the booting stage increased by 27.87%, reaching −0.78. The leaf chlorophyll index (LCI) in LOGS had the highest correlation with NBI in the filling stage, reaching a correlation coefficient of −0.96. The NBI prediction accuracies based on the sensitive band combined with VIs were generally better than those based on the univariate hyperspectral feature, and the prediction accuracy of each growth stage was better than that of the whole growth stage. The random forest regression (RFR) method performed better than the support vector regression (SVR) and partial least squares regression (PLS) methods. The NBI estimation model based on the LOGS-RFR method in the filling stage could explain 95% of the NBI variability with relative prediction deviation (RPD) being 3.69. These results will provide a scientific basis for better nitrogen nutrition monitoring, diagnosis, and later for field management of winter wheat.

Abstract
Hyperspectral imagery was applied to estimating non-galloyl (EC, EGC) and galloyl (ECG, EGCG) types of catechins in new shoots of green tea. Partial least squares regression models were developed to consider the effects of commercial fertilizer (CF) and organic fertilizer (OF). The models could explain each type of catechin with a precision of more than 0.79, with a few exceptions. When the CF model was applied to the OF hyperspectral reflectance and the OF model was applied to the CF hyperspectral reflectance for mutual prediction, the prediction accuracy was better with the OF models than CF models. The prediction models using both CF and OF data (hyperspectral reflectances, and concentrations of catechins) had a precision of more than 0.76 except for the non-galloyl-type catechins as a group and EGC alone. These results provide useful data for maintaining and improving the quality of green tea.

Abstract
The accurate and nondestructive assessment of leaf nitrogen (N) is very important for N management in winter wheat fields. Mobile phones are now being used as an additional N diagnostic tool. To overcome the drawbacks of traditional digital camera diagnostic methods, a histogram-based method was proposed and compared with the traditional methods. Here, the field N level of six different wheat cultivars was assessed to obtain canopy images, leaf N content, and yield. The stability and accuracy of the index histogram and index mean value of the canopy images in different wheat cultivars were compared based on their correlation with leaf N and yield, following which the best diagnosis and prediction model was selected using the neural network model. The results showed that N application significantly affected the leaf N content and yield of wheat, as well as the hue of the canopy images and plant coverage. Compared with the mean value of the canopy image color parameters, the histogram could reflect both the crop coverage and the overall color information. The histogram thus had a high linear correlation with leaf N content and yield and a relatively stable correlation across different growth stages. Peak b of the histogram changed with the increase in leaf N content during the reviving stage of wheat. The histogram of the canopy image color parameters had a good correlation with leaf N content and yield. Through the neural network training and estimation model, the root mean square error (RMSE) and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of the estimated and measured values of leaf N content and yield were smaller for the index histogram (0.465, 9.65%, and 465.12, 5.5% respectively) than the index mean value of the canopy images (0.526, 12.53% and 593.52, 7.83% respectively), suggesting a good fit for the index histogram image color and robustness in estimating N content and yield. Hence, the use of the histogram model with a smartphone has great potential application in N diagnosis and prediction for wheat and other cereal crops.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tea (Camellia sinensis L) is a highly nutritious beverage with commercial value globally. However, it is at risk of economic fraud. This study aims to develop a powerful evaluation method to distinguish Chinese official Dianhong tea from various other categories, employing hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology and chemometric algorithms. RESULTS Two matrix statistical algorithms encompassing a gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and a gradient co-occurrence matrix (GLGCM) are used to extract HSI texture data. Three novel spectral variable screening methods are utilized to select wavenumbers of near-infrared (NIR) spectra: iteratively retaining informative variables (IRIV), interval random frog, and variable combination population analysis. Feature fusion of image texture characteristics and spectra data are the eigenvectors for model building. Authentic classification models are constructed using the extreme learning machine approach and the least squares support vector machine (LSSVM) approach, coupling them with features from wavelength extraction techniques for assessing the quality of Dianhong black tea. The results demonstrate that the LSSVM model using fused data (IRIV + GLGCM) provides the best results and achieves a predictive precision of 99.57%. CONCLUSION This study confirms that HSI coupled with LSSVM is effective in differentiating authentic Dianhong black tea samples. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Tea quality is generally assessed through panel sensory evaluation, which requires elaborate sample preparation steps. Here, a novel and low-cost evaluation method of using smartphone imaging coupled with micro-near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer based on digital light processing is proposed to classify the quality grades of Keemun black tea. RGB color information was obtained by Image J software, eight texture characteristics, including scheme, contrast, dissimilarity, entropy, correlation, second moment and variance, and homogeneity were obtained by ENVI software based on co - occurrence method from smartphone images, and spectral data were preprocessed with standard normal variate. A principal component analysis (PCA)-support vector machine (SVM) model was established to analyze the color, texture, and spectral data. Low-level and middle-level fusion strategies were introduced for analyzing the fusion data. The results indicated that the accuracy of the SVM model on mid-level data fusion (100.00%, 94.29% for calibration set and prediction set, respectively) was higher than that obtained for separate color (97.14%, 88.57%), texture (84.29%, 60%), spectrum (74.29%, 68.57%) evaluation, or low-level data fusion (88.57%, 82.86%). The best SVM model yielded satisfactory performance with 94.29% accuracy for the prediction sets. These results suggested that smartphone imaging coupled with micro-NIR spectroscopy is an effective and low-cost tool for evaluating tea quality.

Abstract
Plant stress detection is considered one of the most critical areas for the improvement of crop yield in the compelling worldwide scenario, dictated by both the climate change and the geopolitical consequences of the Covid-19 epidemics. A complicated interconnection of biotic and abiotic stressors affect plant growth, including water, salt, temperature, light exposure, nutrients availability, agrochemicals, air and soil pollutants, pests and diseases. In facing this extended panorama, the technology choice is manifold. On the one hand, quantitative methods, such as metabolomics, provide very sensitive indicators of most of the stressors, with the drawback of a disruptive approach, which prevents follow up and dynamical studies. On the other hand qualitative methods, such as fluorescence, thermography and VIS/NIR reflectance, provide a non-disruptive view of the action of the stressors in plants, even across large fields, with the drawback of a poor accuracy. When looking at the spatial scale, the effect of stress may imply modifications from DNA level (nanometers) up to cell (micrometers), full plant (millimeters to meters), and entire field (kilometers). While quantitative techniques are sensitive to the smallest scales, only qualitative approaches can be used for the larger ones. Emerging technologies from nuclear and medical physics, such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography, are expected to bridge the gap of quantitative non-disruptive morphologic and functional measurements at larger scale. In this review we analyze the landscape of the different technologies nowadays available, showing the benefits of each approach in plant stress detection, with a particular focus on the gaps, which will be filled in the nearby future by the emerging nuclear physics approaches to agriculture.

Abstract
Multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for plant protection are widely used in China’s agricultural production. However, spray droplets often drift and distribute nonuniformly, thereby harming its utilization and the environment. A variable spray system is designed, discussed, and verified to solve this problem. The distribution characteristics of droplet deposition under different spray states (flight state, environment state, nozzle state) are obtained through computational fluid dynamics simulation. In the verification experiment, the wind velocity error of most sample points is less than 1 m/s, and the deposition ratio error is less than 10%, indicating that the simulation is reliable. A simulation data set is used to train support vector regression and back propagation neural network with multiple parameters. An optimal regression model with the root mean square error of 6.5% is selected. The UAV offset and nozzle flow of the variable spray system can be obtained in accordance with the current spray state by multi-sensor fusion and the predicted deposition distribution characteristics. The farmland experiment shows that the deposition volume error between the prediction and experiment is within 30%, thereby proving the effectiveness of the system. This article provides a reference for the improvement of UAV intelligent spray system.

Abstract
The main objectives of the study are to understand and explore critical feature wavelengths of the obtained near-infrared (NIR) data relating to dianhong black tea quality categories, we propose a multi-variable selection strategy based on the variable space optimization from big to small which is the kernel idea of a variable combination of the improved genetic algorithm (IGA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) in this study. A rapid description based on the NIR technology is implemented to assess black tea tenderness and rankings. First, 700 standard samples from dianhong black tea of seven quality classes are scanned using a NIR system. The raw spectra acquired are preprocessed by Savitzky-Golay (SG) filtering coupled with standard normal variate transformation (SNV). Then, the multi-variable selection algorithm (IGA-PSO) is applied to compare with the single method (the IGA and PSO) and search the optimal characteristic wavelengths. Finally, the identification models are developed using a decision tree (DT), partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), and support vector machine (SVM) based on different kernel functions combined with the effective features from the above variables screening paths for the discrimination of black tea quality. The results show that the IGA-PSO-SVM model with a radial basis function achieves the best predictive results with the correct discriminant rate (CDR) of 95.28% based on selected four characteristic variables in the prediction process. The overall results demonstrate that NIR combined with a multi-variable selection method can constitute a potential tool to understand the most important features involved in the evaluation of dianhong black tea quality helping the instrument manufacturers to achieve the development of low-cost and handheld NIR sensors.

Abstract
The evaluation of tea quality tended to be subjective and empirical by human panel tests currently. A convenient analytical approach without human involvement was developed for the quality assessment of tea with great significance. In this study, near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (HSI) combined with multiple decision tree methods was utilized as an objective analysis tool for delineating black tea quality and rank. Data fusion that integrated texture features based on gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and short-wave near-infrared spectral features were as the target characteristic information for modeling. Three different types of supervised decision tree algorithms (fine tree, medium tree, and coarse tree) were proposed for the comparison of the modeling effect. The results indicated that the performance of models was enhanced by the multiple perception feature fusion. The fine tree model based on data fusion obtained the best predictive performance, and the correct classification rate (CCR) of evaluating black tea quality was 93.13% in the prediction process. This work demonstrated that HSI coupled with intelligence algorithms as a rapid and effective strategy could be successfully applied to accurately identify the rank quality of black tea.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The quality of fresh tea leaves after harvest determines, to some extent, the quality and price of commercial tea. A fast and accurate method to evaluate the quality of fresh tea leaves is required. RESULTS In this study, the potential of hyperspectral imaging in the range of 328-1115 nm for the rapid prediction of moisture, total nitrogen, crude fiber contents, and quality index value was investigated. Ninety samples of eight tea-leaf varieties and two picking standards were tested. Quantitative partial least squares regression (PLSR) models were established using a full spectrum, whereas multiple linear regression (MLR) models were developed using characteristic wavelengths selected by a successive projections algorithm (SPA) and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling. The results showed that the optimal SPA-MLR models for moisture, total nitrogen, crude fiber contents, and quality index value yielded optimal performance with coefficients of determination for prediction (R2 p) of 0.9357, 0.8543, 0.8188, 0.9168; root mean square error of 0.3437, 0.1097, 0.3795, 1.0358; and residual prediction deviation of 4.00, 2.56, 2.31, and 3.51, respectively. CONCLUSION The results suggested that the hyperspectral imaging technique coupled with chemometrics was a promising tool for the rapid and nondestructive measurement of tea-leaf quality, and had the potential to develop multispectral imaging systems for future online detection of tea-leaf quality. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Eucommiae Cortex is commonly used for treating various diseases in a form of the crude and salt-fired products. Generally, it is empirical to distinguish the difference between two types of Eucommiae Cortex. The metabolomics coupled with chemometrics strategy was proposed to filter the combinatorial discriminatory quality markers for precise distinction and further quality control of the crude and salt-fired Eucommiae Cortex. The metabolomics data of multiple batches of Eucommiae Cortex samples was obtained by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS). Orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis was utilized to filter candidate markers for characterizing the obvious difference of the crude and salt-fired Eucommiae Cortex. The accuracy of combinatorial markers was validated by random forest and partial least squares regression. Finally, eleven combinatorial discriminatory quality markers from 67 identified compounds were rapidly screened, identified, and determined for distinguishing the difference between crude and salt-fired Eucommiae Cortex. It was demonstrated that UHPLC-MS based metabolomics with chemometrics was a powerful strategy to screen the combinatorial discriminatory quality markers for distinguishing the crude and salt-fired Eucommiae Cortex and to provide the reference for precise quality control of Eucommiae Cortex.

Abstract
Volatile fatty acid derivatives (VFADs) produced in tea plants (Camellia sinensis) not only have been shown to function as defense compounds but also impart a "fresh green" odor to green tea products; however, little is known about alternative splicing (AS) of genes in regulating the production of VFADs in plants. In this study, the contents of VFADs and corresponding transcriptome profiles were obtained in five different months (April, June, August, September, and October). Correlation analysis identified seven unique transcripts of enzyme-coding genes (CsLOX2, CsLOX4, CsADH4, CsADH8, and CsADH10), which are responsible for regulating VFAD biosynthesis; four AS transcripts of these genes (CsLOX2, CsLOX4, CsADH4, and CsADH8) were validated by RT-PCR. By employing the gene-specific antisense oligodeoxynucleotide-mediated reduction method, we found the expression levels of alternatively spliced transcripts of CsLOX4-iso1, CsLOX4-iso2, and CsADH4-iso3 were lower, and the contents of cis-3-hexenol were correspondingly reduced in the leaves of tea plant; this result suggested that the AS play important roles in regulating biosynthesis of VFADs in C. sinensis. Our results provide new insights into the important contribution of AS events in regulating the VFAD biosynthesis in tea plant.
