Abstract
Antibacterial materials are urgently needed to combat bacterial contamination, growth, or attachment on contact surfaces, as bacterial infections remain a public health crisis worldwide. Here, a novel ultrasound-assisted method is utilized for the first time to fabricate oxidative chlorine-loaded AH@PBAT/PBF-Cl films with more superior grafting efficiency and rechargeable antibacterial effect than those from conventional techniques. The films remarkably inactivate 99.9999% Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus cells, inducing noticeable cell deformations and mechanical instability. The specific antibacterial mechanism against E. coli used as a model organism is unveiled using several cell envelope structural and functional analyses combined with proteomics, peptidoglycomics, and fluorescence probe techniques. Film treatment partially neutralizes the bacterial surface charge, induces oxidative stress and cytoskeleton deformity, alters membrane properties, and disrupts the expression of key proteins involved in the synthesis and transport of the lipopolysaccharide and peptidoglycan, indicating the cell envelope as the primary target. The films specifically target lipopolysaccharides, resulting in structural impairment of the polysaccharide and lipid A components, and inhibit peptidoglycan precursor synthesis. Together, these lead to metabolic disorders, membrane dysfunction, structural collapse, and eventual death. Given the films' antibacterial effects via the disruption of key cell envelope components, they can potentially combat a wide range of bacteria. These findings lay a theoretical basis for developing efficient antibacterial materials for food safety or biomedical applications.

Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) is naturally accumulated
by bacteria
but can also be synthesized chemically. Its processability is limited,
as it tends to degrade at temperatures above its melting temperature;
hence, investigation into crystallization kinetics and morphology
of PHB materials of both natural and synthetic origins is of great
need and interest to get a better understanding of structure–property
relationship. Accordingly, this contribution reports a first study
of the crystallization and morphology of synthetic PHB materials of
different molecular weights. These synthetic PHBs are racemic mixtures
(50/50 mol %) of R and S chain configurations
and are compared with an enantiopure bacterial R-PHB.
Nonisothermal and isothermal crystallization studies show that R and S chains of PHB can cocrystallize
in the same unit cell as the R-PHB. Most significantly,
the results show that the presence of S chains decreases
the overall crystallization rate, which could enhance the processability
and industrialization of PHB-based materials.

Abstract
Poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) is a valuable bio-based and biodegradable polymer that may substitute common polymers in packaging and biomedical applications provided that the production cost is reduced and some properties improved. Blending PHB with other biodegradable polymers is the most simple and accessible route to reduce costs and to improve properties. This review provides a comprehensive overview on the preparation, properties and application of the PHB blends with other biodegradable polyesters such as medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoates, poly(ε-caprolactone), poly(lactic acid), poly(butylene succinate), poly(propylene carbonate) and poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) or polysaccharides and their derivatives. A special attention has been paid to the miscibility of PHB with these polymers and the compatibilizing methods used to improve the dispersion and interface. The changes in the PHB morphology, thermal, mechanical and barrier properties induced by the second polymer have been critically analyzed in view of industrial application. The biodegradability and recyclability strategies of the PHB blends were summarized along with the processing techniques adapted to the intended application. This review provides the tools for a better understanding of the relation between the micro/nanostructure of PHB blends and their properties for the further development of PHB blends as solutions for biodegradable packaging.

Abstract
Antibacterial textile materials are widely used in daily life, but most are disposable products with poor antibacterial durability. N-halamine can rapidly inactivate microorganisms, has good stability, and shows great potential applications in antibacterial fabrics. In this study, an N-halamine monomer precursor was synthesized and treated onto PET fabrics. The treated PET fabrics were rendered antibacterial functionality after chlorination, and exhibited good antibacterial properties with inactivation rate of 100.0 % for both E. coli O157:H7 and S. aureus. After 50 wash cycles, the chlorinated treated PET fabrics could maintain 80.0 % antibacterial efficacy, demonstrating durable antibacterial properties. Storage stability and UV irradiation tests showed that the treated PET fabrics had remarkable regenerable properties. The reduction of the breaking strength was within 12 % after treatment, which is in a satisfying range in antimicrobial finishing.

Abstract
The purpose of the present research was to fabricate ethylcellulose (ECL)/polycaprolactone (PCL)/gelatin (GEL) electrospun nanofibers containing Zataria multiflora essential oil (ZEO) and zinc oxide nanoparticle (ZnO) to provide an appropriate substrate for food packaging. The ECL/PCL/GEL was incorporated with ZEO and ZnO at the concentrations of 10, 20, 30 and 50 wt% and 3 wt%, respectively. The results of ECL/PCL/GEL/ZEO/ZnO nanofiber exhibited uniform morphology with a mean diameter ranging from 361.85 ± 18.7 to 467.33 ± 14.50 nm and enhanced thermal stability. The ECL/PCL/GEL/ZEO/ZnO nanofiber had the highest mechanical parameters, such as young's modulus (437.49 ± 18), tensile strength (7.88 ± 0.7), and elongation at break (5.02 ± 0.6) and water contact angle (61.13 ± 0.5), compared with the other nanofibers. The cell viability during 48 and 72 h was obtained to be about more than 80% for all the nanofibers. Additionally, the ECL/PCL/GEL incorporated with 50% ZEO and 3% ZnO displayed the highest antioxidant activity (34.61 ± 1.98%) and antifungal properties against Penicillium notatum and Aspergillus niger. In general, the ECL/PCL/GEL with the weight ratio of 20:70:10 nanofiber incorporated with 30% ZEO and 3% ZnO was obtained to have appropriate mechanical, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties and thermal stability.

Abstract
Food is a basic necessity for life, growth, survival, and maintaining a proper body function. Rising food demand leads both producers and consumers to search for alternative food sources with high nutritional value. However, food products may never be completely safe. The oxidation reaction may alter both the physicochemical and immunological properties of food products. Maillard and caramelization nonenzymatic browning reactions can play a pivotal role in food acceptance through the ways they influence quality factors such as flavor, color, texture, nutritional value, protein functionality, and digestibility. There is a multitude of adulterated foods that portray adverse risks to the human condition. To maintain food safety, the packaging material is used to preserve the quality and freshness of food products. Food safety is jeopardized by plenty of pathogens by the consumption of adulterated food resulting in multiple foodborne illnesses. Though different analytical tools are used in the analysis of food products, yet, adulterated food has repercussions for the community and is a growing issue that adversely impairs human health and well-being. Thus, pathogenic agents' rapid and effective identification is vital for food safety and security to avoid foodborne illness. This review highlights the various analytical techniques used in the analysis of food products, food structure, and quality of food along with chemical reactions in food processing. Moreover, we have also discussed the effect on health due to the consumption of adulterated food and focused on the importance of food safety, including the biodegradable packaging material.

Abstract
For many years, conventional plastics are manufactured and used for packaging applications in different sectors. As the food industries are increasing, the demand for packaging material is also increasing. Plastics have transformed the food industry to higher levels; however, conventional petroleum-based plastics are non-degradable which has created severe ecological problems to the environment like a threat to aquatic life and degrading air quality. Biodegradable polymers or biopolymers emerged as an alternative approach for many industrial applications to control the risk caused by non-biodegradable plastic. According to the type of starting material, they have been categorized as polymers extracted from biomass, synthesized from monomers, and produced from microorganisms. The quality of biopolymers depends on the physical, mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties. The present review highlights the characteristics of various biopolymers and their blends, comparison of properties between non-biodegradable and biopolymers, the market potential for food packaging applications. The review also emphasizes different commercial forms like films, trays, bags, coatings, and foamed products for application as modified atmosphere packaging, active packaging, and edible packaging. Different issues affecting market growth like harmful products formed during production and consumer perception have also been discussed. Information on biopolymers is widely scattered over many sources, this article aims to provide an overview of biodegradable polymer packages for food applications.

Abstract
Pathogenic bacteria have become global threats to public health. Since the advent of antibiotics about 100 years ago, their use has been embraced with great enthusiasm because of their effective treatment of bacterial infections. However, the evolution of pathogenic bacteria with resistance to conventional antibiotics has resulted in an urgent need for the development of a new generation of antibiotics. The use of antimicrobial polymers offers the promise of enhancing the efficacy of antimicrobial agents. Of the various antibacterial polymers that effectively eradicate pathogenic bacteria, those that are nanoengineered have garnered significant research interest in their design and biomedical applications. Because of their high surface area and high reactivity, these polymers show greater antibacterial activity than conventional antibacterial agents, by inhibiting the growth or destroying the cell membrane of pathogenic bacteria. This review summarizes several strategies for designing nanoengineered antibacterial polymers, explores the factors that affect their antibacterial properties, and examines key features of their design. It then comments briefly on the future prospects for nanoengineered antibacterial polymers. This review thus provides a feasible guide to developing nanoengineered antibacterial polymers by presenting both broad and in-depth bench research, and it offers suggestions for their potential in biomedical applications.

Abstract
In modern decades, an increase in environmental awareness has attracted the keen interest of researchers to investigate eco-sustainable, recyclable materials to minimize reliance on petroleum-based polymeric compounds. Poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) is amorphous, linear, and biodegradable bacterial polyesters that belong to the polyhydroxyalkanoates family with enormous applications in many fields. The present review provides comprehensive information on polyhydroxybutyrate production from different biomass feedstock. Various studies on PHB production by genetically engineered bacterial cells and optimization of parameters have been discussed. Recent technological innovation in processing polyhydroxybutyrate-based biocomposite through the different process has also been examined. Besides this, the potential applications of the derived competent biocomposites in the other fields have been depicted.

Abstract
Pathogenic microbial contamination poses serious threats to human healthcare and economies worldwide, which instigates the booming development of challenging antibacterial materials. N-halamine fibrous materials (NFMs), as an important part of antibacterial materials, featuring structural continuity, good pore connectivity, rapid sterilization, rechargeable bactericidal activity, and safety to humans and environment, have received significant research attention. This review aims to present a systematic discussion of the recent advances in N-halamine antibacterial fibrous materials. We firstly introduce the chemical structures and properties of N-halamine materials. Subsequently, the developed NFMs can be categorized based on their fabrication strategies, including surface modification and one-step spinning. Then some representative applications of these fibrous materials are highlighted. Finally, challenges and future research directions of the materials are discussed in the hope of giving suggestions for the following studies. The chemical structures and properties of N-halamine materials are briefly introduced. Design and fabrication strategies of N-halamine fibrous materials are systematically reviewed. The functional applications of the N-halamine fibrous materials are discussed. Challenges and future research directions of the antibacterial N-halamine fibrous materials are provided.

Abstract
The aim of this review is to provide an overview of recent findings related to bacterial cellulose application in bio-packaging industry. This constantly growing sector fulfils a major role by the maintenance of product safety and quality, protection against environmental impacts that affect the shelf life. Conventional petroleum-based plastic packaging are still rarely recyclable and have a number of harmful environmental effects. Herein, we discuss the most recent studies on potential good alternative to plastic packaging-bacterial nanocellulose (BNC), known as an ecological, safe, biodegradable, and chemically pure biopolymer. The limitations of this bio-based packaging material, including relatively poor mechanical properties or lack of antimicrobial and antioxidant activity, can be successfully overcome by its modification with a wide variety of bioactive and reinforcing compounds. BNC active and intelligent food packaging offer a new and innovative approach to extend the shelf life and maintain, improve, or monitor product quality and safety. Incorporation of different agents BNC matrices allows to obtain e.g., antioxidant-releasing films, moisture absorbers, antimicrobial membranes or pH, freshness and damage indicators, humidity, and other biosensors. However, further development and implementation of this kind of bio-packaging will highly depend on the final performance and cost-effectiveness for the industry and consumers.

Abstract
In the cosmetic sector, natural and sustainable products with a high compatibility with skin, thus conjugating wellness with a green-oriented consumerism, are required by the market. Poly(hydroxyalkanoate) (PHA)/starch blends represent a promising alternative to prepare flexible films as support for innovative beauty masks, wearable after wetting and releasing starch and other selected molecules. Nevertheless, preparing these films by extrusion is difficult due to the high viscosity of the polymer melt at the temperature suitable for processing starch. The preparation of blends including poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) (PBSA) or poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) was investigated as a strategy to better modulate melt viscosity in view of a possible industrial production of beauty mask films. The release properties of films in water, connected to their morphology, was also investigated by extraction trials, infrared spectroscopy and stereo and electron microscopy. Then, the biocompatibility with cells was assessed by considering both mesenchymal stromal cells and keratinocytes. All the results were discussed considering the morphology of the films. This study evidenced the possibility of modulating thanks to the selection of composition and the materials processing of the properties necessary for producing films with tailored properties and processability for beauty masks.

Abstract
Potential hazardous effects caused by non-biodegradable plastics are considered to be one of the most widely discussed and notable challenges of the 21st century. To address this particular problem, immense efforts have been devoted to the preparation of biodegradable plastics material. This green approach mitigates the major drawbacks e.g. improper waste management, low degradation rates, waste accumulation in water reservoirs and harmful chemical reagents hence providing a natural, economical and biodegradable alternative to the customarily employed non-biodegradable plastics. This review provides an insight into recently engineered biodegradable plastics used for packaging applications. Properties such as barrier/permeation indexes, thermal, electrical and mechanical characteristics of the biodegradable plastics are considered in detail for developing an understanding regarding the fundamentals of biodegradable materials. Recent literature (2010-2018) was classified according to the composition and nature of the used material. Materials such as polylactic acid, polyhydroxyalkanoates, polyhydroxybutyrate, polycaprolactone, starch and cellulose were comprehensively discussed along with their properties and blending agents.

Abstract
In this work, it is first reported that the poly (3-hydroxybutyric acid) (PHB) oligomer with a few degrees of polymerization possesses effective antibacterial and antifungal properties. Two preparation methods for the PHB oligomer are described, namely, one-step ring-opening polymerization of β-butyrolactone and extraction from the fermented PHB polymer. An appropriate amount of the synthesized PHB oligomer shows no physiological toxicity to the skin and major organs of mice. Topological application of the synthesized PHB oligomer imparts antimicrobial ability to non-antibacterial fabrics with washing resistance. The synthesized PHB oligomer offers effective sterilization and promotes wound healing in infected nude mice. Most importantly, the PHB oligomer is also reactive to drug-resistant bacteria. These results suggest that the PHB oligomer is not only a great candidate for antimicrobial modification but also a promising one for biomedical applications. Finally, the antimicrobial mechanisms of the PHB oligomer are revealed, and these include disruption of biofilm and the bacterial wall/membrane, leakage of the intracellular content, inhibition of protein activity, and change in the transmembrane potential.

Abstract
Stable antimicrobial nanofibrous membrane for air filtration based on polyamide 6 (hereafter PA6) modified by 1-dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) has been prepared by electrospinning using one-step technology, i.e. with modifying antimicrobial agent dissolved in spinning solution. Stability of antibacterial membrane function has been tested by air-blowing test to prove the permanency of chemical composition and antibacterial activity. X-ray diffraction, high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM) revealed the effect of modifying agent on structure and morphology of PA6 nanofibres. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electrokinetic analysis and antibacterial tests proved the stability of chemical composition and antibacterial activity after air-blowing tests. Special air-blowing device has been constructed for this purpose. The results prove the applicability so prepared membrane for a long-term air-conditioning.

Abstract
In order to prepare multifunctional fibrous membranes with hydrophobicity, antibacterial properties and UV resistance, we used silica and titanium dioxide for preparing SiO2@TiO2 nanoparticles (SiO2@TiO2 NPs) to create roughness on the fibrous membranes surfaces. The introduction of TiO2 was used for improving UV resistance. N-Halamine precursor and silane precursor were introduced to modify SiO2@TiO2 NPs to synthesize SiO2@TiO2-based core@shell composite nanoparticles. The hydrophobic antibacterial fibrous membranes were prepared by a dip-pad process of electrospun biodegradable polyhydroxybutyrate/poly-ε-caprolactone (PHB/PCL) with the synthesized SiO2@TiO2-based core@shell composite nanoparticles. TEM, SEM and FT-IR were used to characterize the synthesized SiO2@TiO2-based core@shell composite nanoparticles and the hydrophobic antibacterial fibrous membranes. The fibrous membranes not only showed excellent hydrophobicity with an average water contact angle of 144° ± 1°, but also appreciable air permeability. The chlorinated fibrous membranes could inactivate all S. aureus and E. coli O157:H7 after 5 min and 60 min of contact, respectively. In addition, the chlorinated fibrous membranes exhibited outstanding cell compatibility with 102.1% of cell viability. Therefore, the prepared hydrophobic antibacterial degradable fibrous membranes may have great potential application for packaging materials. Abstract
BACKGROUNDS N-halamine antibacterial materials have been extensively explored over the past few decades due to their fast inactivation of a broad spectrum of bacterial and rechargeability. Electrospun nanofibers loaded with N-halamines have gained great attention because of their enhanced antibacterial capability induced by the larger specific surface area. The patents on electrospun nanofibers (US20080679694), (CN2015207182871) helped in the method for the preparation of nanofibers. METHODS In this study, a novel N-halamine precursor, 3-(3'-Chloro-propyl)-5,5-dimethylimidazolidine- 2,4-dione(CPDMH), was synthesized. Antimicrobial electrospun Cellulose Acetate (CA) nanofibers were fabricated through impregnating CPDMH as an antimicrobial agent into CA fibers by the bubble electrospinning. The surface morphologies of CA/CPDMH nanofibrous membranes were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). RESULTS The chlorinated fibrous membranes (CA/CPDMH-Cl) exhibited effective antimicrobial activity against 100% of S. aureus and E. coli O157:H7 within 1 min and 5 min, respectively. The CA/CPDMH-Cl nanofibrous membranes showed good storage stability under the dark and excellent durability towards UVA light exposure. Meanwhile, the release of active chlorine from the chlorinated nanofibrous membranes was stable and safe. Besides, the addition of CPDMH could improve the mechanical property, and chlorination did not obviously affect the strength and elongation of the nanofibrous membranes. CONCLUSION CPDMH could endow the electrospun CA nanofibers with powerful, durable and regenerable antimicrobial properties. It will provide a continuous and effective method for health-care relative industrial application.

Abstract
The ethylcellulose/gelatin solutions containing various concentrations of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles were electrospun, and the resultant nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, mechanical testing, water contact angle, and water stability. Results indicated that ZnO nanoparticles acting as fillers interacted with polymers, resulting in the enhanced surface hydrophobicity and water stability of nanofibers. The antibacterial assay showed a concentration-dependent effect of ZnO on the viabilities of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Notably, the antimicrobial efficiency of the 1.5 wt % ZnO-containing fibers against Staphylococcus aureus was 43.7% but increased to 62.5% after UV irradiation at 364 nm, possibly due to the significantly increased amounts of intracellular reactive oxygen species. These results suggested that the ZnO-containing nanofibers with excellent surface hydrophobicity, water stability, and antimicrobial activity exhibited potential uses in food packaging.
