A structural definition of polymer brushes

Controlling spatial distribution of functional lipids in a supported lipid bilayer prepared from vesicles

Conjugating biomolecules, such as antibodies, to bioconjugate moieties on lipid surfaces is a powerful tool for engineering the surface of diverse biomaterials, including cells and nanoparticles. We developed supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) presenting well-defined spatial distributions of functional moieties as models for precisely engineered functional biomolecular-lipid surfaces. We used quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to determine how vesicles containing a mixture of 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-N-[azido(polyethylene glycol)-2000] (DSPE-PEG-N3) form SLBs as a function of the lipid phase transition temperature (Tm). Above the DPPC Tm, DPPC/DSPE-PEG-N3 vesicles form SLBs with functional azide moieties on SiO2 substrates via vesicle fusion. Below this Tm, DPPC/DSPE-PEG-N3 vesicles attach to SiO2 intact. Intact DPPC/DSPE-PEG-N3 vesicles on the SiO2 surfaces fuse and rupture to form SLBs when temperature is brought above the DPPC Tm. AFM studies show uniform and complete DPPC/DSPE-PEG-N3 SLB coverage of SiO2 surfaces for different DSPE-PEG-N3 concentrations. As the DSPE-PEG-N3 concentration increases from 0.01 to 6 mol%, the intermolecular spacing of DSPE-PEG-N3 in the SLBs decreases from 4.6 to 1.0 nm. The PEG moiety undergoes a mushroom to brush transition as DSPE-PEG-N3 concentration varies from 0.1 to 2.0 mol%. Via copper-free click reaction, IgG was conjugated to SLB surfaces with 4.6 nm or 1.3 nm inter-DSPE-PEG-N3 spacing. QCM-D and AFM data show; 1) uniform and complete IgG layers of similar mass and thickness on the two types of SLB; 2) a higher-viscosity/less rigid IgG layer on the SLB with 4.6 nm inter-DSPE-PEG-N3 spacing. Our studies provide a blueprint for SLBs modeling spatial control of functional macromolecules on lipid surfaces, including surfaces of lipid nanoparticles and cells.

Pseudo-bottle-brush decorated thin-film composite desalination membranes with ultrahigh mineral scale resistance

High water recovery is crucial to inland desalination but is impeded by mineral scaling of the membrane. This work presents a two-step modification approach for grafting high-density zwitterionic pseudo-bottle-brushes to polyamide reverse osmosis membranes to prevent scaling during high-recovery desalination of brackish water. Increasing brush density, induced by increasing reaction time, correlated with reduced scaling. High-density grafting eliminated gypsum scaling and almost completely prevented silica scaling during desalination of synthetic brackish water at a recovery ratio of 80%. Moreover, scaling was effectively mitigated during long-term desalination of real brackish water at a recovery ratio of 90% without pretreatment or antiscalants. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal the critical dependence of the membrane's silica antiscaling ability on the degree to which the coating screens the membrane surface from readily forming silica aggregates. This finding highlights the importance of maximizing grafting density for optimal performance and advanced antiscaling properties to allow high-recovery desalination of complex salt solutions.

Nanopatterned Monolayers of Bioinspired, Sequence-Defined Polypeptoid Brushes for Semiconductor/Bio Interfaces

The ability to control and manipulate semiconductor/bio interfaces is essential to enable biological nanofabrication pathways and bioelectronic devices. Traditional surface functionalization methods, such as self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), provide limited customization for these interfaces. Polymer brushes offer a wider range of chemistries, but choices that maintain compatibility with both lithographic patterning and biological systems are scarce. Here, we developed a class of bioinspired, sequence-defined polymers, i.e., polypeptoids, as tailored polymer brushes for surface modification of semiconductor substrates. Polypeptoids featuring a terminal hydroxyl (-OH) group are designed and synthesized for efficient melt grafting onto the native oxide layer of Si substrates, forming ultrathin (∼1 nm) monolayers. By programming monomer chemistry, our polypeptoid brush platform offers versatile surface modification, including adjustments to surface energy, passivation, preferential biomolecule attachment, and specific biomolecule binding. Importantly, the polypeptoid brush monolayers remain compatible with electron-beam lithographic patterning and retain their chemical characteristics even under harsh lithographic conditions. Electron-beam lithography is used over polypeptoid brushes to generate highly precise, binary nanoscale patterns with localized functionality for the selective immobilization (or passivation) of biomacromolecules, such as DNA origami or streptavidin, onto addressable arrays. This surface modification strategy with bioinspired, sequence-defined polypeptoid brushes enables monomer-level control over surface properties with a large parameter space of monomer chemistry and sequence and therefore is a highly versatile platform to precisely engineer semiconductor/bio interfaces for bioelectronics applications.

Transparent PDMS Surfaces with Covalently Attached Lubricants for Enhanced Anti-adhesion Performance

Liquid-like surfaces featuring slippery, omniphobic, covalently attached liquids (SOCALs) reduce unwanted adhesion by providing a molecularly smooth and slippery surface arising from the high mobility of the liquid chains. Such SOCALs are commonly prepared on hard substrates, such as glass, wafers, or metal oxides, despite the importance of nonpolar elastomeric substrates, such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) in anti-fouling or nonstick applications. Compared to polar elastomers, hydrophobic PDMS elastomer activation and covalent functionalization are significantly more challenging, as PDMS tends to display fast hydrophobic recovery upon activation as well as superficial cracking. Through the extraction of excess PDMS oligomers and fine-tuning of plasma activation parameters, homogeneously functionalized PDMS with fluorinated polysiloxane brushes could be obtained while at the same time reducing crack formation. Polymer brush mobility was increased through the addition of a smaller molecular silane linker to exhibit enhanced dewetting properties and reduced substrate swelling compared to functionalizations featuring hydrocarbon functionalities. Linear polymer brushes were verified by thermogravimetric analysis. The optical properties of PDMS remained unaffected by the activation in high-frequency plasma but were impacted by low-frequency plasma. Drastic decreases in solid adhesion of not just complex contaminants but even ice could be shown in horizontal push tests, demonstrating the potential of SOCAL-functionalized PDMS surfaces for improved nonstick applications.

Design, preparation, and characterization of lubricating polymer brushes for biomedical applications

The lubrication modification of biomedical devices significantly enhances the functionality of implanted interventional medical devices, thereby providing additional benefits for patients. Polymer brush coating provides a convenient and efficient method for surface modification while ensuring the preservation of the substrate's original properties. The current research has focused on a "trial and error" method to finding polymer brushes with superior lubricity qualities, which is time-consuming and expensive, as obtaining effective and long-lasting lubricity properties for polymer brushes is difficult. This review summarizes recent research advances in the biomedical field in the design, material selection, preparation, and characterization of lubricating and antifouling polymer brushes, which follow the polymer brush development process. This review begins by examining various approaches to polymer brush design, including molecular dynamics simulation and machine learning, from the fundamentals of polymer brush lubrication. Recent advancements in polymer brush design are then synthesized and potential avenues for future research are explored. Emphasis is placed on the burgeoning field of zwitterionic polymer brushes, and highlighting the broad prospects of supramolecular polymer brushes based on host-guest interactions in the field of self-repairing polymer brush applications. The review culminates by providing a summary of methodologies for characterizing the structural and functional attributes of polymer brushes. It is believed that a development approach for polymer brushes based on "design-material selection-preparation-characterization" can be created, easing the challenge of creating polymer brushes with high-performance lubricating qualities and enabling the on-demand creation of coatings. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Biomedical devices have severe lubrication modification needs, and surface lubrication modification by polymer brush coating is currently the most promising means. However, the design and preparation of polymer brushes often involves "iterative testing" to find polymer brushes with excellent lubrication properties, which is both time-consuming and expensive. This review proposes a polymer brush development process based on the "design-material selection-preparation-characterization" strategy and summarizes recent research advances and trends in the design, material selection, preparation, and characterization of polymer brushes. This review will help polymer brush researchers by alleviating the challenges of creating polymer brushes with high-performance lubricity and promises to enable the on-demand construction of polymer brush lubrication coatings.

Perspectives on Theoretical Models and Molecular Simulations of Polymer Brushes

Polymer brushes have witnessed extensive utilization and progress, driven by their distinct attributes in surface modification, tethered group functionality, and tailored interactions at the nanoscale, enabling them for various scientific and industrial applications of coatings, sensors, switchable/responsive materials, nanolithography, and lab-on-a-chips. Despite the wealth of experimental investigations into polymer brushes, this review primarily focuses on computational studies of antifouling polymer brushes with a strong emphasis on achieving a molecular-level understanding and structurally designing antifouling polymer brushes. Computational exploration covers three realms of thermotical models, molecular simulations, and machine-learning approaches to elucidate the intricate relationship between composition, structure, and properties concerning polymer brushes in the context of nanotribology, surface hydration, and packing conformation. Upon acknowledging the challenges currently faced, we extend our perspectives toward future research directions by delineating potential avenues and unexplored territories. Our overarching objective is to advance our foundational comprehension and practical utilization of polymer brushes for antifouling applications, leveraging the synergy between computational methods and materials design to drive innovation in this crucial field.

Correlated Hybrid DNA Structures Explored by the oxDNA Model

Thermodynamically, perfect DNA hybridization can be formed between probes and their corresponding targets due to the favorable energy. However, this is not the case dynamically. Here, we use molecular dynamics (MD) simulations based on the oxDNA model to investigate the process of DNA microarray hybridization. In general, correlated hybrid DNA structures are formed, including one probe associated with several targets as well as one target hybrid with multiple probes leading to the target-mediated hybridization. The formation of these two types of correlated structures largely depends on the surface coverage of the DNA microarray. Moreover, DNA sequence, DNA length, and spacer length have an impact on the structural formation. Our findings shed light on the dynamics of DNA hybridization, which is important for the application of DNA microarray.

Surface-Initiated PET-RAFT via the Z-Group Approach

Surface-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (SI-RAFT) is a user-friendly and versatile approach for polymer brush engineering. For SI-RAFT, synthetic strategies follow either surface-anchoring of radical initiators (e.g., azo compounds) or anchoring RAFT chain transfer agents (CTAs) onto a substrate. The latter can be performed via the R-group or Z-group of the CTA, with the previous scientific focus in literature skewed heavily toward work on the R-group approach. This contribution investigates the alternative: a Z-group approach toward light-mediated SI photoinduced electron transfer RAFT (SI-PET-RAFT) polymerization. An appropriate RAFT CTA is synthesized, immobilized onto SiO2, and its ability to control the growth (and chain extension) of polymer brushes in both organic and aqueous environments is investigated with different acrylamide and methacrylate monomers. O2 tolerance allows Z-group SI-PET-RAFT to be performed under ambient conditions, and patterning surfaces through photolithography is illustrated. Polymer brushes are characterized via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ellipsometry, and water contact angle measurements. An examination of polymer brush grafting density showed variation from 0.01 to 0.16 chains nm-2. Notably, in contrast to the R-group SI-RAFT approach, this chemical approach allows the growth of intermittent layers of polymer brushes underneath the top layer without changing the properties of the outermost surface.

Fabrication of carboxylic functionalized poly(methacrylic acid 2-(tert-butylamino)ethyl ester)-coated mesoporous silica nanoparticles and their application for removing ionic dyes from polluted water

The removal of dyes from wastewater that are released during industrial processes has become a significant concern in the environmental science in recent years. To tackle this issue, researchers are exploring the use of nanomaterials for designing new adsorbents. Another promising approach is to grow polymer brushes with high density functional groups via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP), which can significantly enhance their ability to absorb dyes. The presence of carboxylic acid groups on the adsorbent material significantly contributes to its efficacy in dye removal by enhancing adsorption capacity, enabling selective adsorption, pH-dependent behavior, chelation, or complexation, and providing stability for repeated usage. In this work, a nanomaterial of carboxylic functionalized poly (methacrylic acid 2-(tert-butylamino)ethyl ester)-coated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs-PMATBAE-COOH) was synthesized by the growth of PTBAEMA via surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization, then reacted with succinic anhydride reaction. The chemical structure of MSNPs-PMATBAE-COOH was confirmed using multiple methods, including FT-IR and DLS, and the core-brush morphology was observed clearly using TEM. MSNPs-PMATBAE-COOH were subsequently employed to adsorb hazardous dyes efficiently. The anionic polymer brushes enabled the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) and tetraethylrhodamine (TER) at optimum pH value of 3. The results also indicated that MSNPs-PMATBAE-COOH possessed significant adsorption capacity (263.4 and 212.9 mg g-1 for MB and TER, respectively) and fast adsorption rate (within 15 min), which can be explained by the abundance of adsorptive polymer brushes and the small size of the nanoparticles. Overall, the findings indicate that MSNPs-PMATBAE-COOH is a highly effective adsorbent material for eliminating dye pollutants from wastewater.

Swelling and Orientation Behavior of End-Grafted Polymer Chains by In Situ Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Complementing In Situ Ellipsometry

The literature lacks established concrete parameters for assigning grafted chain regimes. In this context, dichroic in situ attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and in situ ellipsometry were used complementarily, offering new opportunities for conformational analysis of end-grafted polymer chains. Especially polymer chain orientation was studied as a new parameter, among others, for proper chain regime assignment in this report. Alkyne-functionalized poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) with a molecular weight of 49.8 kg/mol and a contour length of around 80 nm was grafted to self-assembled monolayers bearing triazole end groups as reported. Different chain regimes were generated by using three different grafting densities. ATR-FTIR spectroscopy based on the ν(C═O) stretching vibration at around 1728 cm-1 provided a new direct approach to determine the GD of polymer chains. Significant shifts in the position of the ν(C═O) band comparing dry and wet states were observed, caused by increased hydrogen bonding interactions between PDMAEMA and water. Finally, the averaged orientation of PDMAEMA chains along the z-axis was determined using dichroic ATR-FTIR spectroscopy based on the dichroic ratios of the ν(C═O) band and molecular order parameters SZ,MOL calculated thereof. High SZ,MOL values were found for the wet state compared to the dry state, confirming that all GD PDMAEMA samples are in the brush regime in the swollen state.

Tailoring Thermoresponsive Polymer Architecture to Enhance Antifouling and Fouling Reversibility of Membranes

Cleaning a fouled membrane using warm water, instead of commonly used fouling control chemicals, is an approach advocated in resource-limited settings, where small-scale membrane filtration is used to provide clean water. Thermoresponsive polymers coated onto membranes undergo a conformational change across their lower critical solution temperature (LCST), enabling foulant removal during such temperature-swing cleaning. However, their intrinsic hydrophobicity above the LCST poses a fundamental material challenge. In this study, we examine how thermoresponsive polymers can be optimally copolymerized with hydrophilic polymers by precisely manipulating monomer arrangement of thermoresponsive N-isopropylacrylamide and hydrophilic 2-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]ethyl acrylate. We successfully grafted these copolymers with different monomer arrangements onto poly(ether sulfone) ultrafiltration membranes while maintaining other polymer characteristics, such as the degree of polymerization and grafting density, constant. We found that placing hydrophilic polymer blocks at the outermost surface above the thermoresponsive polymer blocks is critical to achieving high surface hydrophilicity while preserving the thermoresponsive functionality. We demonstrate enhanced fouling resistance and efficient temperature-swing cleaning with optimized copolymer design based on their interaction with bovine serum albumin during static adsorption, filtration, and cleaning processes. These findings emphasize the importance of accurately tailoring the polymer architecture to enable more efficient filtration with reduced fouling and the capability to effectively clean the fouled membrane by simply using warm water.

Polyester Brush Coatings for Circularity: Grafting, Degradation, and Repeated Growth

Polymer brushes are widely used as versatile surface modifications. However, most of them are designed to be long-lasting by using nonbiodegradable materials. This generates additional plastic waste and hinders the reusability of substrates. To address this, we present a synthetic strategy for grafting degradable polymer brushes via organocatalytic surface-initiated ring-opening polymerization (SI-ROP) from stable PGMA-based macroinitiators. This yields polyester brush coatings (up to 50 nm in thickness) that hydrolyze with controlled patterns and can be regrown on the same substrate after degradation. We chose polyesters of different hydrolytic stability and degradation mechanism, i.e., poly(lactic acid) (PLA), polycaprolactone (PCL), and polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), which are grown from poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA)-based macroinitiators for strong surface binding and initiating site reuse. Brush degradation is monitored via thickness changes in pH-varied buffer solutions and seawater with PHB brushes showing rapid degradation in all solutions. PLA and PCL brushes show higher stability in solutions of up to pH 8, while all coatings fully degrade after 14 days in seawater. These brushes offer surface modifications with well-defined degradation patterns that can be regrown after degradation, making them an interesting alternative to (meth)acrylate-based, nondegradable polymers brushes.

Nanostructure Explains the Behavior of Slippery Covalently Attached Liquid Surfaces

Slippery covalently-attached liquid surfaces (SCALS) with low contact angle hysteresis (CAH, <5°) and nanoscale thickness display impressive anti-adhesive properties, similar to lubricant-infused surfaces. Their efficacy is generally attributed to the liquid-like mobility of the constituent tethered chains. However, the precise physico-chemical properties that facilitate this mobility are unknown, hindering rational design. This work quantifies the chain length, grafting density, and microviscosity of a range of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) SCALS, elucidating the nanostructure responsible for their properties. Three prominent methods are used to produce SCALS, with characterization carried out via single-molecule force measurements, neutron reflectometry, and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. CO2 snow-jet cleaning was also shown to reduce the CAH of SCALS via a modification of their grafting density. SCALS behavior can be predicted by reduced grafting density, Σ, with the lowest water CAH achieved at Σ≈2. This study provides the first direct examination of SCALS grafting density, chain length, and microviscosity and supports the hypothesis that SCALS properties stem from a balance of layer uniformity and mobility.

Chemoselectivity Streamlines the Approach to Linear and Y-Shaped Thiol-Polyethers Starting from Thiocarboxylic Acids

Thiol-functionalized polyethers, especially poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), have extensive applications in biomedicine and materials sciences. Herein, we report a simple one-pot synthesis of α-thiol-ω-hydroxyl polyethers through ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of epoxides using thiocarboxylic acid initiators followed by in situ aminolysis. The efficient and chemoselective metal-free Lewis pair catalyst avoids transthioesterification thus achieving well-controlled molar mass, low dispersity, and high end-group fidelity. Kinetic and calculation results demonstrated a fast-initiation mode of the ROP for the strong nucleophilicity of the thiocarboxylate anion and its weak interaction with Lewis acid. The method is expanded for α-thiol-ω-dihydroxyl (Y-shaped) PEO by virtue of the stability of thioester during the ROP. The thiol functionality in linear/Y-shaped PEO is further corroborated by the intensified interaction with gold surface and the resultant protein resistance behavior.

Novel epoxy-terminated macromonomers and their polymerization for synthesis of bottle-brush type amphiphilic block copolymers

Architecture of polymers has vital implications for their physical properties and applications. In this study, synthesis of a series of novel epoxy-terminated macromonomers namely Ep-DEGMME, Ep-TEGMME, Ep-EGMEE, Ep-EGMBE, and Ep-EGMHE is reported. The synthesized macromonomers vary in number of ethylene oxide units and length of the alkyl group. These macromonomers are first homopolymerized by anionic ring-opening polymerization for synthesis of homopolymers of a molar mass range. Subsequently, these macromonomers with different lengths of two segments (alkyl group and ethylene oxide units) are copolymerized with other monomers for synthesis of bottle-brush type architectures. In the first case, di- and tri-block copolymers of Ep-EGMBE are synthesized while using MeO-PEG or PEG as a macroinitiator; the resulting block copolymers have hydrophilic handle and hydrophobic brush. On the same lines, block copolymers of Ep-TEGMME with ε-caprolactone have hydrophobic handle and hydrophilic brush. The synthesized block copolymers are comprehensively characterized by SEC and liquid chromatography at critical conditions. The analysis reveals the successful synthesis of block copolymers while providing information on relative total molar mass, and individual block lengths of the block copolymers, along with amount of unwanted homopolymers in the sample.

Supramolecular Polymer Brushes Grown by Surface-Initiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization from Cucurbit[7]uril-based Non-Covalent Initiators

Polymer brushes are densely grafted, chain end-tethered assemblies of polymers that can be produced via surface-initiated polymerization. Typically, this is accomplished using initiators or chain transfer agents that are covalently attached to the substrate. This manuscript reports an alternative route towards polymer brushes, which involves the use of non-covalent cucurbit[7]uril-adamantane host-guest interactions to surface-immobilize initiators for atom transfer radical polymerization. These non-covalent initiators can be used for the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization of a variety of water-soluble methacrylate monomers to generate supramolecular polymer brushes with film thicknesses of more than 100 nm. The non-covalent nature of the initiator also allows facile access to patterned polymer brushes, which can be produced in straightforward fashion by drop-casting a solution of the initiator-modified guest molecules onto a substrate that presents the cucurbit[7]uril host.

One Step Closer to Coatings Applications Utilizing Self-Stratification: Effect of Rheology Modifiers

Self-stratification of model blends of colloidal spheres has recently been demonstrated as a method to form multifunctional coatings in a single pass. However, practical coating formulations are complex fluids with upward of 15 components. Here, we investigate the influence of three different rheology modifiers (RMs) on the stratification of a 10 wt % 7:3 w:w blend of 270 and 96 nm anionic latex particles that do not stratify without RM. However, addition of a high molar mass polysaccharide thickener, xanthan gum, raises the viscosity and corresponding Péclet number enough to achieve small-on-top stratification as demonstrated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements. Importantly, this was possible due to minimal particle-rheology modifier interactions, as demonstrated by the bulk rheology. In contrast, Carbopol 940, a microgel-based RM, was unable to achieve small-on-top stratification despite a comparable increase in viscosity. Instead, pH-dependent interactions with latex particles lead to either laterally segregated structures at pH 3 or a surface enrichment of large particles at pH 8. Strong RM-particle interactions are also observed when the triblock associative RM HEUR10kC12 is used. Here, small-on-top, large-enhanced, and randomly mixed structures were observed at respectively 0.01, 0.1, and 1 wt % HEUR10kC12. Combining rheology, dynamic light scattering, and AFM results allows the mechanisms behind the nonmonotonic stratification in the presence of associative RMs to be elucidated. Our results highlight that stratification can be predicted and controlled for RMs with weak particle interactions, while a strong RM-particle interaction may afford a wider range of stratified structures. This takes a step toward successfully harnessing stratification in coatings formulations.

Adsorption of Aldehyde-Functional Diblock Copolymer Spheres onto Surface-Grafted Polymer Brushes via Dynamic Covalent Chemistry Enables Friction Modification

Dynamic covalent chemistry has been exploited to prepare numerous examples of adaptable polymeric materials that exhibit unique properties. Herein, the chemical adsorption of aldehyde-functional diblock copolymer spherical nanoparticles onto amine-functionalized surface-grafted polymer brushes via dynamic Schiff base chemistry is demonstrated. Initially, a series of cis-diol-functional sterically-stabilized spheres of 30-250 nm diameter were prepared via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) aqueous dispersion polymerization. The pendent cis-diol groups within the steric stabilizer chains of these precursor nanoparticles were then oxidized using sodium periodate to produce the corresponding aldehyde-functional spheres. Similarly, hydrophilic cis-diol-functionalized methacrylic brushes grafted from a planar silicon surface using activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (ARGET ATRP) were selectively oxidized to generate the corresponding aldehyde-functional brushes. Ellipsometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to confirm brush oxidation, while scanning electron microscopy studies demonstrated that the nanoparticles did not adsorb onto a cis-diol-functional precursor brush. Subsequently, the aldehyde-functional brushes were treated with excess small-molecule diamine, and the resulting imine linkages were converted into secondary amine bonds via reductive amination. The resulting primary amine-functionalized brushes formed multiple dynamic imine bonds with the aldehyde-functional diblock copolymer spheres, leading to a mean surface coverage of approximately 0.33 on the upper brush layer surface, regardless of the nanoparticle size. Friction force microscopy studies of the resulting nanoparticle-decorated brushes enabled calculation of friction coefficients, which were compared to that measured for the bare aldehyde-functional brush. Friction coefficients were reasonably consistent across all surfaces except when particle size was comparable to the size of the probe tip. In this case, differences were ascribed to an increase in contact area between the tip and the brush-nanoparticle layer. This new model system enhances our understanding of nanoparticle adsorption onto hydrophilic brush layers.

SI-PET-RAFT in flow: improved control over polymer brush growth

Surface-initiated photoinduced electron transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (SI-PET-RAFT) provides a light-dependent tool to synthesize polymer brushes on different surfaces that tolerates oxygen and water, and does not require a metal catalyst. Here we introduce improved control over SI-PET-RAFT polymerizations via continuous flow conditions. We confirm the composition and topological structure of the brushes by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ellipsometry, and AFM. The improved control compared to no-flow conditions provides prolonged linear growth of the polymer brush (up to 250 nm, where no-flow polymerization maxed out <50 nm), and improved polymerization control of the polymer brush that allows the construction of diblock polymer brushes. We further show the linear correlation between the molecular weight of the polymer brush and its dry thickness by combining ellipsometry and single-molecule force spectroscopy.

Strategies for surface coatings of implantable cardiac medical devices

Cardiac medical devices (CMDs) are required when the patient's cardiac capacity or activity is compromised. To guarantee its correct functionality, the building materials in the development of CMDs must focus on several fundamental properties such as strength, stiffness, rigidity, corrosion resistance, etc. The challenge is more significant because CMDs are generally built with at least one metallic and one polymeric part. However, not only the properties of the materials need to be taken into consideration. The biocompatibility of the materials represents one of the major causes of the success of CMDs in the short and long term. Otherwise, the material will lead to several problems of hemocompatibility (e.g., protein adsorption, platelet aggregation, thrombus formation, bacterial infection, and finally, the rejection of the CMDs). To enhance the hemocompatibility of selected materials, surface modification represents a suitable solution. The surface modification involves the attachment of chemical compounds or bioactive compounds to the surface of the material. These coatings interact with the blood and avoid hemocompatibility and infection issues. This work reviews two main topics: 1) the materials employed in developing CMDs and their key characteristics, and 2) the surface modifications reported in the literature, clinical trials, and those that have reached the market. With the aim of providing to the research community, considerations regarding the choice of materials for CMDs, together with the advantages and disadvantages of the surface modifications and the limitations of the studies performed.

pH-Mediated Size-Selective Adsorption of Gold Nanoparticles on Diblock Copolymer Brushes

Precise control of nanoparticles at interfaces can be achieved by designing stimuli-responsive surfaces that have tunable interactions with nanoparticles. In this study, we demonstrate that a polymer brush can selectively adsorb nanoparticles according to size by tuning the pH of the buffer solution. Specifically, we developed a facile polymer brush preparation method using a symmetric polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) block copolymer deposited on a grafted polystyrene layer. This method is based on the assembly of a PS-b-P2VP thin film oriented with parallel lamellae that remains after exfoliation of the top PS-b-P2VP layer. We characterized the P2VP brush using X-ray reflectivity and atomic force microscopy. The buffer pH is used to tailor interactions between citrate-coated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and the top P2VP block that behaves like a polymer brush. At low pH (∼4.0) the P2VP brushes are strongly stretched and display a high density of attractive sites, whereas at neutral pH (∼6.5) the P2VP brushes are only slightly stretched and have fewer attractive sites. A quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitored the adsorption thermodynamics as a function of AuNP diameter (11 and 21 nm) and pH of the buffer. Neutral pH provides limited penetration depth for nanoparticles and promotes size selectivity for 11 nm AuNP adsorption. As a proof of concept, the P2VP brushes were exposed to various mixtures of large and small AuNPs to demonstrate selective capture of the smaller AuNPs. This study shows the potential of creating devices for nanoparticle size separations using pH-sensitive polymer brushes.

Effects of electrostatic coupling and surface polarization on polyelectrolyte brush structure

In this work, we perform molecular dynamics simulations to study a spherical polyelectrolyte brush. We explore the effects of surface polarization and electrostatic coupling on brush size and distribution of counterions. The method of image charges is considered to take into account surface polarization, considering a metallic, an unpolarizable, and a dielectric nano-core. It is observed that, for all cases, a moderate shrinking-swelling effect appears with an increase in the electrostatic coupling parameter. This effect occurs under high Manning ratios. The curves relating the average size of polyelectrolyte brush as a function of coupling show a minimum. The results show that the grafting density of polyelectrolytes on the nano-core surface plays an important role in the polarization effect. We consider a modified Poisson-Boltzmann theory to describe the counterion profiles around the brush in the case of unpolarizable nano-cores and weak electrostatic coupling.

Hydrophilic Aldehyde-Functional Polymer Brushes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Potential Bioapplications

Surface-initiated activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (ARGET ATRP) is used to polymerize a cis-diol-functional methacrylic monomer (herein denoted GEO5MA) from planar silicon wafers. Ellipsometry studies indicated dry brush thicknesses ranging from 40 to 120 nm. The hydrophilic PGEO5MA brush is then selectively oxidized using sodium periodate to produce an aldehyde-functional hydrophilic PAGEO5MA brush. This post-polymerization modification strategy provides access to significantly thicker brushes compared to those obtained by surface-initiated ARGET ATRP of the corresponding aldehyde-functional methacrylic monomer (AGEO5MA). The much slower brush growth achieved in the latter case is attributed to the relatively low aqueous solubility of the AGEO5MA monomer. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirmed that precursor PGEO5MA brushes were essentially fully oxidized to the corresponding PAGEO5MA brushes within 30 min of exposure to a dilute aqueous solution of sodium periodate at 22 °C. PAGEO5MA brushes were then functionalized via Schiff base chemistry using an amino acid (histidine), followed by reductive amination with sodium cyanoborohydride. Subsequent XPS analysis indicated that the mean degree of histidine functionalization achieved under optimized conditions was approximately 81%. Moreover, an XPS depth profiling experiment confirmed that the histidine groups were uniformly distributed throughout the brush layer. Surface ζ potential measurements indicated a significant change in the electrophoretic behavior of the zwitterionic histidine-functionalized brush relative to that of the non-ionic PGEO5MA precursor brush. The former brush exhibited cationic character at low pH and anionic character at high pH, with an isoelectric point being observed at around pH 7. Finally, quartz crystal microbalance studies indicated minimal adsorption of a model globular protein (BSA) on a PGEO5MA brush-coated substrate, whereas strong protein adsorption via Schiff base chemistry occurred on a PAGEO5MA brush-coated substrate.

Swelling-Activated, Soft Mechanochemistry in Polymer Materials

Swelling in polymer materials is a ubiquitous phenomenon. At a molecular level, swelling is dictated by solvent-polymer interactions, and has been thoroughly studied both theoretically and experimentally. Favorable solvent-polymer interactions result in the solvation of polymer chains. For polymers in confined geometries, such as those that are tethered to surfaces, or for polymer networks, solvation can lead to swelling-induced tensions. These tensions act on polymer chains and can lead to stretching, bending, or deformation of the material both at the micro- and macroscopic scale. This Invited Feature Article sheds light on such swelling-induced mechanochemical phenomena in polymer materials across dimensions, and discusses approaches to visualize and characterize these effects.

Critical Analysis of Adhesion Work Measurements from AFM-based Techniques for Soft Contact

HYPOTHESIS

The work of adhesion is a thermodynamic quantity that is frequently measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Determination of the work of adhesion requires quasi-equilibrium measurements, where we address the question of to what extent atomic force microscopy qualifies for quasi-equilibrium measurements.

EXPERIMENT

To measure the work of adhesion, we combined soft colloidal probe AFM (SCP AFM) with reflection interference contrast microscopy (RICM). This allowed us to extract the work of adhesion either from the pull-off force or from the contact radius. With these methods, we investigated the adhesion behavior of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) polymer brushes in the swollen and solvent-induced collapsed state by systematically analyzing contact radii and adhesive forces.

FINDINGS

In the swollen state, the adhesion to the PNIPAM brush was fivefold larger and exhibited significant time dependencies when measured with SCP AFM. A strong rate dependence of the pull-off force method was indicative of a non-equilibrium process. In order to reliably determine the equilibrium work of adhesion, the contact radius method was found to be the better because it is not rate dependent. Our work highlights the important benefits of using optical measurements to determine the contact radius when deriving the works of adhesion between colloidal probes and polymer brush surfaces.

Thermal and Bulk Properties of Triblock Terpolymers and Modified Derivatives towards Novel Polymer Brushes

We report the synthesis of three (3) linear triblock terpolymers, two (2) of the ABC type and one (1) of the BAC type, where A, B and C correspond to three chemically incompatible blocks such as polystyrene (PS), poly(butadiene) of exclusively (~100% vinyl-type) -1,2 microstructure (PB_1,2) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) respectively. Living anionic polymerization enabled the synthesis of narrowly dispersed terpolymers with low average molecular weights and different composition ratios, as verified by multiple molecular characterization techniques. To evaluate their self-assembly behavior, transmission electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering experiments were conducted, indicating the effect of asymmetric compositions and interactions as well as inversed segment sequence on the adopted morphologies. Furthermore, post-polymerization chemical modification reactions such as hydroboration and oxidation were carried out on the extremely low molecular weight PB_1,2 in all three terpolymer samples. To justify the successful incorporation of -OH groups in the polydiene segments and the preparation of polymeric brushes, various molecular, thermal, and surface analysis measurements were carried out. The synthesis and chemical modification reactions on such triblock terpolymers are performed for the first time to the best of our knowledge and constitute a promising route to design polymers for nanotechnology applications.

Omniphobic liquid-like surfaces

Liquid-repellent surfaces, especially smooth solid surfaces with covalently grafted flexible polymer brushes or alkyl monolayers, are the focus of an expanding research area. Surface-tethered flexible species are highly mobile at room temperature, giving solid surfaces a unique liquid-like quality and unprecedented dynamical repellency towards various liquids regardless of their surface tension. Omniphobic liquid-like surfaces (LLSs) are a promising alternative to air-mediated superhydrophobic or superoleophobic surfaces and lubricant-mediated slippery surfaces, avoiding fabrication complexity and air/lubricant loss issues. More importantly, the liquid-like molecular layer controls many important interface properties, such as slip, friction and adhesion, which may enable novel functions and applications that are inaccessible with conventional solid coatings. In this Review, we introduce LLSs and their inherent dynamic omniphobic mechanisms. Particular emphasis is given to the fundamental principles of surface design and the consequences of the liquid-like nature for task-specific applications. We also provide an overview of the key challenges and opportunities for omniphobic LLSs.

The Influence of Constraints on Gelation in a Controlling/Living Copolymerization Process

We developed a simple model of the copolymerization process in the formation of crosslinked macromolecular systems. A living copolymerization was carried out for free chains, in bulk and in a slit, as well as for grafted chains in a slit. In addition, polymer 2D brushes were placed in a slit with initiator molecules attached to one of the confining walls. Coarse-grained chains were embedded in the vertices of a face-centered cubic lattice with the excluded volume interactions. The simulations of the copolymerization processes were performed using the Dynamic Lattice Liquid algorithm, a version of the Monte Carlo method. The influence of the initial initiator to cross-linker ratio, slit width and grafting on the polymerization and on the gelation was examined. It was also shown that the influence of a confining slit was rather small, while the grafting of chains affected the location of the gel pint significantly.

End-Tethered Chains Increase the Local Glass Transition Temperature of Matrix Chains by 45 K Next to Solid Substrates Independent of Chain Length

The local glass transition temperature T_g of pyrene-labeled polystyrene (PS) chains intermixed with end-tethered PS chains grafted to a neutral silica substrate was measured by fluorescence spectroscopy. To isolate the impact of the grafted chains, the films were capped with bulk neat PS layers eliminating competing effects of the free surface. Results demonstrate that end-grafted chains strongly increase the local T_g of matrix chains by ≈45 K relative to bulk T_g, independent of grafted chain molecular weight from M_n = 8.6 to 212 kg/mol and chemical end-group, over a wide range of grafting densities σ = 0.003 to 0.33 chains/nm² spanning the mushroom-to-brush transition regime. The tens-of-degree increase in local T_g resulting from immobilization of the chain ends by covalent bonding in this athermal system suggests a mechanism that substantially increases the local activation energy required for cooperative rearrangements.

Super-Slippery Poly(Dimethylsiloxane) Brush Surfaces: From Fabrication to Practical Application

Superwetting surfaces with special slippery performances have been the focus of practical applications and basic research for decades. Compared to superhydrophobic/superoleophobic and slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS), liquid-like covalently attached poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) brush surfaces have no trouble in constructing the micro/nanostructure and the loss of infused lubricant, meanwhile, it can also provide lots of new advantages, such as smooth, transparent, pressure- and temperature-resistant, and low contact angle hysteresis (CAH) to diverse liquids. This paper focuses on the relationship between the wetting performance and practical functional application of PDMS brush surfaces. Recent progress of the preparation of PDMS brush surfaces and their super-slippery performances, with a special focus on diverse functional applications were summarized. Finally, perspectives on future research directions are also discussed.

Surface antimicrobial functionalization with polymers: fabrication, mechanisms and applications

Undesirable adhesion of microbes such as bacteria, fungi and viruses onto surfaces affects many industries such as marine, food, textile, and healthcare. In particular in healthcare and food packaging, the effects of unwanted microbial contamination can be life-threatening. With the current global COVID-19 pandemic, interest in the development of surfaces with superior anti-viral and anti-bacterial activities has multiplied. Polymers carrying anti-microbial properties are extensively used to functionalize material surfaces to inactivate infection-causing and biocide-resistant microbes including COVID-19. This review aims to introduce the fabrication of polymer-based antimicrobial surfaces through physical and chemical modifications, followed by the discussion of the inactivation mechanisms of conventional biocidal agents and new-generation antimicrobial macromolecules in polymer-modified antimicrobial surfaces. The advanced applications of polymer-based antimicrobial surfaces on personal protective equipment against COVID-19, food packaging materials, biomedical devices, marine vessels and textiles are also summarized to express the research trend in academia and industry.

Enhanced vapor sorption in block and random copolymer brushes

Polymer brushes in gaseous environments absorb and adsorb vapors of favorable solvents, which makes them potentially relevant for sensing applications and separation technologies. Though significant amounts of vapor are sorbed in homopolymer brushes at high vapor pressures, at low vapor pressures sorption remains limited. In this work, we vary the structure of two-component polymer brushes and investigate the enhancement in vapor sorption at different relative vapor pressures compared to homopolymer brushes. We perform molecular dynamics simulations on two-component block and random copolymer brushes and investigate the influence of monomer miscibility and formation of high-energy interfaces between immiscible monomers on vapor sorption. Additionally, we present absorption isotherms of pure homopolymer, mixed binary brush and 2-block, 4-block, and random copolymer brushes. Based on these isotherms, we finally show that random copolymer brushes absorb more vapor than any other architecture investigated thus far. Random brushes display enhanced sorption at both high and low vapor pressures, with the largest enhancement in sorption at low vapor pressures.

Structure of Self-Initiated Photopolymerized Films: A Comparison of Models

Self-initiated photografting and photopolymerization (SI-PGP) uses UV illumination to graft polymers to surfaces without additional photoinitiators using the monomers as initiators, "inimers". A wider use of this method is obstructed by a lack of understanding of the resulting, presumably heterogeneous, polymer structure and of the parallel degradation under continuous UV illumination. We have used neutron reflectometry to investigate the structure of hydrated SI-PGP-prepared poly(HEMA-co-PEG₁₀MA) (poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-(ethylene glycol)₁₀ methacrylate)) films and compared parabolic, sigmoidal, and Gaussian models for the polymer volume fraction distributions. Results from fitting these models to the data suggest that either model can be used to approximate the volume fraction profile to similar accuracy. In addition, a second layer of deuterated poly(methacrylic acid) (poly(dMAA)) was grafted over the existing poly(HEMA-co-PEG₁₀MA) layer, and the resulting double-grafted films were also studied by neutron reflectometry to shed light on the UV-polymerization process and the inevitable UV-induced degradation which competes with the grafting.

Polymer brush-based nanostructures: from surface self-assembly to surface co-assembly

Surface structures play an important role in the practical applications of materials. The synthesis of polymer brushes on a solid surface has emerged as an effective tool for tuning surface properties. The fabrication of polymer brush-based surface nanostructures has greatly facilitated the development of materials with unique surface properties. In this review article, synthetic methods used in the synthesis of polymer brushes, and self-assembly approaches applied in the fabrication of surface nanostructures including self-assembly of polymer brushes, co-assembly of polymer brushes and "free" block copolymer chains, and polymerization induced surface self-assembly, are reviewed. It is demonstrated that polymer brush-based surface nanostructures, including spherical surface micelles, wormlike surface structures, layered structures and surface vesicles, can be fabricated. Meanwhile, the challenges in the synthesis and applications of the surface nanostructures are discussed. This review is expected to be helpful for understanding the principles, methods and applications of polymer brush-based surface nanostructures.

Biorecognition antifouling coatings in complex biological fluids: a review of functionalization aspects

Recent progress in biointerface research has highlighted the role of antifouling functionalizable coatings in the development of advanced biosensors for point-of-care bioanalytical and biomedical applications dealing with real-world complex samples. The resistance to nonspecific adsorption promotes the biorecognition performance and overall increases the reliability and specificity of the analysis. However, the process of modification with biorecognition elements (so-called functionalization) may influence the resulting antifouling properties. The extent of these effects concerning both functionalization procedures potentially changing the surface architecture and properties, and the physicochemical properties of anchored biorecognition elements, remains unclear and has not been summarized in the literature yet. This critical review summarizes these key functionalization aspects with respect to diverse antifouling architectures showing low or ultra-low fouling quantitative characteristics in complex biological media such as bodily fluids or raw food samples. The subsequent discussion focuses on the impact of functionalization on fouling resistance. Furthermore, this review discusses some of the drawbacks of available surface sensitive characterization methods and highlights the importance of suitable assessment of the resistance to fouling.

Effect of Molecular Weight on Tribological Properties of Polyether Amine Derivatives under Different Contact Modes

The requirements for the fuel economy of modern industry continue to drive the progress of low-viscosity lubricants. The present work reports the application of polyether amine derivatives as friction modifiers to improve the tribological properties of low viscosity poly-alpha-olefin. Three polyether amine derivatives with different molecular weights were synthesized, the tribological properties of which were systematically investigated under three different contact modes. These functionalized polymers exhibited significant friction reduction and wear resistance properties in the point-on-flat and line-on-flat friction tests, but just showed anti-wear performance in the severe point-to-point contact mode. The results exhibited that molecular weights of the polymers had a direct effect on their tribological properties. The increase of molecular weight in a certain range was beneficial to the improvement of tribological properties, but further undue increase will rather reduce the friction reduction and wear resistance performances. It can be indicated that the number of oxygen atoms increased with the molecular weight of the polymer, which will be conductive to the adsorption of the polymer on the metal surface. However, when the molecular weight of the polymer exceeds a certain value, the steric hindrance of the molecules adsorbing to the metal surface increases, which in turn has a negative impact on the tribological properties.

Fundamentals and Applications of Polymer Brushes in Air

For several decades, high-density, end-tethered polymers, forming so-called polymer brushes, have inspired scientists to understand their properties and to translate them to applications. While earlier research focused on polymer brushes in liquids, it was recently recognized that these brushes can find application in air as well. In this review, we report on recent progress in unraveling fundamental concepts of brushes in air, such as their vapor-swelling and solvent partitioning. Moreover, we provide an overview of the plethora of applications in air (e.g., in sensing, separations or smart adhesives) where brushes can be key components. To conclude, we provide an outlook by identifying open questions and issues that, when solved, will pave the way for the large scale application of brushes in air.

Versatile Coating Platform for Metal Oxide Nanoparticles: Applications to Materials and Biological Science

In this feature article, we provide an overview of our research on statistical copolymers as a coating material for metal oxide nanoparticles and surfaces. These copolymers contain functional groups enabling noncovalent binding to oxide surfaces and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) polymers for colloidal stability and stealthiness. The functional groups are organic derivatives of phosphorous acid compounds R-H₂PO₃, also known as phosphonic acids that have been screened for their strong affinity to metals and for their multidentate binding ability. Herein we develop a polymer-based coating platform that shares features with the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) and layer-by-layer (L-b-L) deposition techniques. The milestones of this endeavor are the synthesis of PEG-based copolymers containing multiple phosphonic acid groups, the implementation of simple protocols combining versatility with high particle production yields, and the experimental evidence of the colloidal stability of the coated particles. As a demonstration, coating studies are conducted on cerium (CeO₂), iron (γ-Fe₂O₃), aluminum (Al₂O₃), and titanium (TiO₂) oxides of different sizes and morphologies. We finally discuss applications in the domain of nanomaterials and nanomedicine. We evaluate the beneficial effects of coatings on redispersible nanopowders, contrast agents for in vitro/vivo assays, and stimuli-responsive particles.

Molecular Dynamics Characterization of Radiosensitizing Coated Gold Nanoparticles in Aqueous Environment

Functionalized metal nanoparticles (NPs) have been proposed as promising radiosensitizing agents for more efficient radiotherapy treatment using photons and ion beams. Radiosensitizing properties of NPs may depend on many different parameters (such as size, composition, and density) of the metal core, the organic coatings, and the molecular environment. A systematic exploration of each of these parameters on the atomistic level remains a formidable and costly experimental task, but it can be addressed by means of advanced computational modeling. This paper describes a detailed computational procedure for construction and atomistic-level characterization of radiosensitizing metal NPs in explicit molecular media. The procedure is general and is extensible to many different combinations of the core, coating, and environment. As an illustrative and experimentally relevant case study, we consider nanometer-sized gold NPs coated with thiol-poly(ethylene glycol)-amine molecules of different length and surface density and solvated in water at ambient conditions. The radial distribution of different atoms in the coatings as well as distribution and structural properties of water around the coated NPs are analyzed and linked to radiosensitizing properties of the NPs. It is revealed that the structure of the coating layer on the solvated NPs depends strongly on the surface density of ligands. At surface densities below ∼3 molecules/nm² the coating represents a mixture of different conformation states, whereas elongated "brush"-like structures are formed at higher densities of ligands. The water content in denser coatings is significantly lower at distances from 1 nm up to 3 nm from the gold surface depending on the length of ligand molecules. Such dense and thick coatings may suppress the production of hydroxyl radicals by low-energy electrons emitted from the metal NPs and thus diminish their radiosensitizing properties. The presented computational framework provides precise information for a quantitative atomistic-level description of the structural properties of coated metal NPs in biologically relevant environments and so may form a basis for future developments to achieve a more realistic description of irradiation-driven chemistry effects in the vicinity of coated metal NPs.

Mechanofluorescent Polymer Brush Surfaces that Spatially Resolve Surface Solvation

Polymer brushes, consisting of densely end-tethered polymers to a surface, can exhibit rapid and sharp conformational transitions due to specific stimuli, which offer intriguing possibilities for surface-based sensing of the stimuli. The key toward unlocking these possibilities is the development of methods to readily transduce signals from polymer conformational changes. Herein, we report on single-fluorophore integrated ultrathin (<40 nm) polymer brush surfaces that exhibit changing fluorescence properties based on polymer conformation. The basis of our methods is the change in occupied volume as the polymer brush undergoes a collapse transition, which enhances the effective concentration and aggregation of the integrated fluorophores, leading to a self-quenching of the fluorophores' fluorescence and thereby reduced fluorescence lifetimes. By using fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy, we reveal spatial details on polymer brush conformational transitions across complex interfaces, including at the air-water-solid interface and at the interface of immiscible liquids that solvate the surface. Furthermore, our method identifies the swelling of polymer brushes from outside of a direct droplet (i.e., the polymer phase with vapor above), which is controlled by humidity. These solvation-sensitive surfaces offer a strong potential for surface-based sensing of stimuli-induced phase transitions of polymer brushes with spatially resolved output in high resolution.

Advances in design and applications of polymer brush modified anisotropic particles

Current advancements in the creation of anisotropy in particles and their surface modification with polymer brushes have established a new class of hybrid materials termed polymer brush modified anisotropic particles (PBMAP). PBMAPs display unique property combinations, e.g., multi-functionality in multiple directions along with smart behavior, which is not easily achievable in traditional hybrid materials. Typically, anisotropic particles can be categorized based on three different factors, such as shape anisotropy (geometry driven), compositional anisotropy (functionality driven), and surface anisotropy (spatio-selective surface modification driven). In this review, we have particularly focused on the synthetic strategies to construct the various type of PBMAPs based on inorganic or organic core which may or may not be isotropic in nature, and their applications in various fields ranging from drug delivery to catalysis. In addition, superior performances and fascinating properties of PBMAPs over their isotropic analogues are also highlighted. A brief overview of their future developments and associated challenges have been discussed at the end.

Research progress in self-oscillating polymer brushes

Polymer brushes possess unique changes in physical and chemical properties when they are exposed to external stimuli and have a wide range of applications. Self-oscillating polymers are anchored on surfaces of certain materials and are coupled with some self-oscillating reactions (with the Belousov–Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction as an example) to form self-oscillating polymer brushes. As an independent field of stimulus response functional surface research, the development of new intelligent bionic materials has good potential. This article reviews the oscillation mechanisms of self-oscillating polymer brushes and their classifications. First, the oscillation mechanisms of self-oscillating polymer brushes are introduced. Second, the research progress in self-oscillating polymers is discussed in terms of the type of self-oscillation reactions. Finally, possible future developments of self-oscillating polymer brushes are prospected.
