Abstract
Adipocyte infiltration consists of a temporary increase in the number of adipocytes in the microenvironment of tissue injury. There is already evidence in the literature of adipocytes' participation in promoting the inflammatory response, and parallelly laser photobiomodulation can benefit the tissue repair process. This study aimed to chronologically analyze adipocytic infiltration in the repair of photobiomodulated skin wounds experimentally induced in rats through histomorphometric analysis. The sample consisted of 20 rats divided into 2 groups: control group and group subjected to laser photobiomodulation. The skin portions of the back of rats were processed and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin in 4 μm thick sections including the surgical wound 5 and 10 days after the proposed treatments. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were performed by capturing images of tissue sections, describing the organizational pattern of adipocytes around the surgical wound and counting individual adipocytes in the connective tissue in formation. Adipocytic infiltration was observed in both experimental groups on the 5th day, with a decrease on the 10th day. The group treated with photobiomodulation presented a greater number of adipocytes compared to the control group, in both periods analyzed. The findings of the present study seem to corroborate the literature, which indicates that adipose cells might stimulate inflammation and repair, and photobiomodulation can enhance these effects, since it aids the process of adipocytic infiltration in the injured area. Abstract
Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic mucosal inflammatory disease associated with T-cell-mediated immunological dysfunction. Symptomatic OLP is a painful condition, and complete healing is often not achieved. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the effectiveness of topical drugs, medications, and other interventions compared to placebo or to other treatments in pain reduction and clinical resolution in adult patients with symptomatic OLP. A detailed electronic literature search was performed through the MEDLINE (PubMed) database between 1 January 2005 and 30 September 2022. Eligible studies were selected based on the inclusion criteria, and a quality assessment was conducted. From 649 titles, 121 articles were selected as abstracts, 75 papers were assessed as full text, along with 15 other papers obtained through a manual search. A total of 15 RCTs were finally included in the review process. Because of the significant heterogeneity in the study design of the included studies, no meta-analysis of the data could be performed. Topical corticosteroids represent the first-line treatment in the management of symptomatic OLP due to their efficacy and minimal adverse effects. Calcineurin inhibitors seem to be equally effective and are indicated in recalcitrant cases, extensive lesions, patients susceptible to oral candidiasis, or cases unresponsive to corticosteroids. Other treatments, such as aloe vera, chamomile, isotretinoin, ozone, and laser therapy, could be beneficial as adjunct therapies in association with first-line treatments.

Comparative evaluation of the efficacy of ozone therapy and low level laser therapy on oral mucosal wound healing in rat experimental model. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of ozone therapy and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on healing of oral mucosal wounds in rats through histological assessment. METHODS Thirty male Wistar rats were employed in this study. Following a 5-mm surgical wound created on the buccal mucosa, the rats were randomly distributed into 3 groups of 10: (1) ozone group (treated with topical gaseous ozone), (2) laser group (treated with LLLT), and (3) control group (received no treatment). Following the sacrifice of rats on day 21, samples were taken from rats' buccal mucosa for histological assay and scoring. The data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney test. RESULTS Ozone and laser groups demonstrated reduced acute inflammation scores compared to control group (p=.01), while no significant differences were observed between the ozone and laser groups (p = 1.00). Similarly, ozone and laser groups showed higher histological tissue repair scores than the control group (p=.00), and no difference was found between ozone and laser groups (p=.76). On the other hand, no significant difference in expression of TNF-α (p=.33) and TGF-β1 (p=.13) was identified between ozone, laser and control samples. CONCLUSION The present study demonstrated that both adjunctive ozone therapy and LLLT with a 940 nm diode laser provided significant improvement in parameters of acute inflammation and tissue repair in surgical oral mucosal wounds in rats.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of bovine colostrum on 5-fluorouracil-induced oral mucositis in rats. MATERIAL AND METHOD Twenty-four male Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into three groups as the Preoperative, Postoperative and Control groups. All rats were administered 100 mg/kg 5-fluorouracil on the first day and 65 mg/kg 5-FU on the third day intraperitoneally. On the third and fifth days, a superficial incision was created on the mucosa of the right cheek pouch. The oral mucositis protocol was applied in the control group. The preoperative group was given bovine colostrum by gavage from the 1st day of the 5-FU procedure to the 5th day, while the postoperative group was given bovine colostrum by gavage from the 5th day to the 10th day. RESULTS According to the scoring made in terms of secondary infections, two cases in the control group had moderate infections, and two cases in each of the preoperative and postoperative groups had severe infections. The difference between the control group and the preoperative and postoperative groups was significant (p=0.020). There was no significant difference between the preoperative and postoperative groups. While the degree of wound healing in the postoperative group was higher than the other groups, the difference was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION No significant effect of bovine colostrum on the healing of oral mucositis was observed. Additional studies are needed to shed light on the pathogenic inflammatory mechanisms in mucositis and the prophylactic and therapeutic roles of antioxidants.

Abstract
A spatiotemporally dynamic therapy (SDT) is proposed as a powerful therapeutic modality that provides spatially dynamic responses of drug-carriers for adapting to the wound microenvironment. Herein, dynamic chitosan-poly (ethylene glycol) (CP) Schiff-base linkages are employed to perform SDT by directly converting a liquid drug Kangfuxin (KFX) into a gel formation. The obtained KFX-CP drug-gel with shape-adaptive property is used to treat a representative oral mucositis (OM) model in a spatiotemporally dynamic manner. The KFX-CP drug-gel creates an instructive microenvironment to regulate signaling biomolecules and endogenous cells behavior, thereby promoting OM healing by the rule of dynamically adjusting shape to fit the irregular OM regions first, and then provides space for tissue regeneration, over KFX potion control and the general hydrogel group of CP hydrogel and KFX-F127. Most interestingly, the regenerated tissue has ordered structure like healthy tissue. Therefore, the SDT provides a new approach for the design of next generation of wound dressing and tissue engineering materials.

Abstract
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effects of chlorhexidine, metronidazole, and ozone application on the healing of palatal wounds in diabetic rats. A defect in the form of a 4 mm-diameter wound was created on the palatal mucosa of 84 adult female Wistar albino rats, which were randomly divided into 4 groups: control, chlorhexidine, metronidazole, and ozone groups. The animals were euthanized after 3, 6, and 10 days, and wound closure was histologically assessed. On day 3, polymorphonuclear leukocytes were significantly higher in the control group than in the chlorhexidine and ozone groups (P < 0.05). Fibrosis was higher in the ozone group than in the control and chlorhexidine groups (P < 0.05). Vascular endothelial growth factor was higher in the metronidazole and ozone groups than in the control group (P < 0.05). On day 6, the quantity of polymorphonuclear leukocytes was higher in the control, metronidazole, and chlorhexidine groups than in the ozone group (P < 0.05). Vascular endothelial growth factor was higher in the ozone group than in the control, chlorhexidine, and metronidazole groups (P < 0.05). On day 10, Vascular endothelial growth factor was higher in the control, chlorhexidine, and metronidazole groups than in the ozone group (P < 0.05). The authors concluded that the use of chlorhexidine, ozone, and metronidazole pastes resulted in enhanced wound healing, as determined histologically. The authors suggest that ozone supplementation can be an alternative therapy to chlorhexidine in impaired wound healing in diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
Background Nattokinase (NK) is a promising alternative in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases due to its potent fibrinolytic activity. In this study, we investigated the effect of crude nattokinase extract on the healing of acetic acid-induced oral mucositis in mice. Methods Bacillus subtilis culture media (BSCM) was isolated into the supernatant, named nattokinase crude extract (NCE), and the pellet was named Bacillus subtilis mass (BSM). An oral mucositis model was established in mice by applying 50% glacial acetic acid to the buccal mucosa. According to the treatment conditions, the mice were divided into BSCM, NCE, BSM and phosphate buffered saline (PBS) groups. The weight of the mice, oral mucositis healing score and histopathological examination were used to evaluate the treatment. Results Fibrinolytic activities of BSCM, NCE and BSM were approximately 8069, 10,800 and 80 U/ml, respectively. The weight gain of mice in the NCE group was significantly different from the PBS group after three days’ treatment (p < 0.05). The oral mucositis score of NCE group was significantly higher than other groups (p < 0.05). The differences in histopathology scores between the NCE and other groups were statistically significant (p < 0.01). Conclusions NCE could possess remarkable potential to reduce pain and promote oral mucositis healing with minimal safety concerns. In this study, we first report that NCE from the supernatant of Bacillus subtilis can promote the healing of oral mucositis, which extends the application scope of NK.

Abstract
Introduction: The most important side effect after non-surgery cancer treatment (NSCT) is oral mucositis (OM) which degrades the quality of life. Using photobiomodulation (PBM), formerly known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT), in the prevention of NSCT-induced OM was widely studied. Hence, this review evaluates the efficacy of optical treatment parameters behind the working process of PBM in preventing NSCT-induced OM in preclinical studies. Methods: Using the PubMed, Scopus and Embase databases, the present study systematically reviewed existing preclinical studies for optical treatment parameters of PBM in preventing NSCT-induced OM in experimental models without restriction on the year of publication. Results: In total, 51 articles were recognized during the search of the literature, and only 16 research papers were included in this review, taking into consideration the inclusion as well as exclusion benchmarks. The reviewed studies showed that a consensus has yet to be reached on the optimal PBM treatment parameters in preventing NSCT-induced OM. However, a wavelength of 660 nm, a power density of 40 mW as well as fluence which ranged between 2 and 6 J/cm2 were mostly utilized in the included studies. Furthermore, the severity of NSCT-induced OM was reduced following PBM application with no reported severe side effects. Conclusion: The efficacy of PBM with the associated optical parameters is a promising strategy in preventing NSCT-induced OM. However, the optimal parameters of PBM need to be investigated.

Abstract
Introduction: Given the inconsistencies in the literature regarding laser performance in non-surgical treatments, this study investigated the available literature to determine the advantages and disadvantages of low-power lasers in treating non-surgical complications and diseases. Methods: Authentic information from articles was extracted and evaluated to assess low-power laser performance for non-surgical treatments. A systematic search of studies on low-level laser therapy (LLLT) for non-surgical treatments was conducted mainly in PubMed and google scholar articles. Results: Four categories of diseases, including brain-related diseases, skin-related diseases, cancers, and bone-related disorders, which were treated by LLLT were identified and introduced. The various types of LLLT regarding the studied diseases were discussed. Conclusion: Positive aspects of LLLT versus a few disadvantages of its application imply more investigation to find better and efficient new methods.

BACKGROUND Management of erosive Oral Lichen Planus (eOLP) is challenging. Currently, topical corticosteroids are widely used as first-line therapy, but they might be associated with side-effects and incomplete clinical response. Among non-pharmacological strategies, ozone at low medical concentration has proven to induce a mild activation of protective anti-oxidant pathways, thus exerting therapeutic effects in many inflammatory diseases. The aim of this randomized controlled study was to investigate the effectiveness of ozonized water in association with conventional topical corticosteroids for the treatment of eOLP. MATERIAL AND METHODS Fifty-one patients were included in the study and randomized into 2 groups: study group (n=26) included patients receiving ozonized water treatment; control group (n=25) included patients receiving placebo treatment (i.e. double-distilled water). Treatment protocol consisted of 1-minute oral rinses, repeated for 4 times, twice a week for 4 weeks. All patients received conventional corticosteroid topical therapy (betamethasone soluble tablets, 2 rinses/day for 4 weeks). Assessment of size of lesions, sign and pain scores was performed before treatment, after 2 weeks of treatment (T1) and at the end of 4-week treatment (T2). Efficacy Index (EI) of treatment, candidiasis and relapse rates were also recorded. RESULTS All patients experienced significant improvement of sign and pain scores with a higher rate of improvement in ozone-treated group (T1 improvement rates: Thongprasom 92.2% vs 28%; VAS pain 76.9% vs 32%; p<0.05). Pain and size reduction were significantly higher in ozone-treated group both at T1 and T2 (p<0.05). Ozone-treated group showed a higher EI at every time point (T0-T2: 72.77% vs 37.66%, p<0.01). Candidiasis (32% vs 11.5%) and relapse (40% vs 34.6%) rates were higher in control group, however the differences were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of this study, ozonized water seems to be effective as an adjunct therapy, in combination with topical corticosteroids, for the treatment of eOLP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of ozone therapy on wound healing formed experimentally in the oral cavity of rats. DESIGN Two surgical wounds were generated on the cheeks of 24 Wistar rats, bilaterally. Half of the animals were submitted to ozone therapy on both wounds (experimental group) and the other half received no treatment (control group). In the experimental group, wounds were exposed to ozone gas 1, 2 or 3 (60 μg/mL) times. Evaluation of wound healing of the buccal mucosa was followed for 1, 3 and 7 days. The distribution of neutrophils, fibroplasia and angiogenesis were analyzed. Samples were classified in a healing numerical scale according to the inflammatory intensity. Data were submitted to Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS On day 1, wounds were similar in both groups, lesions were open and bloody with slightly minor bleeding in the ozone therapy group. On day 3, the group with ozone therapy was almost all refurbished and with higher angiogenesis, while the control group still had more bloody points and lower blood vessels. On day 7, both wounds were remodeled, with higher fibroplasia in the group that received ozone therapy. CONCLUSION It can be concluded that ozone therapy was effective in improving angiogenesis and fibroblasts count in the buccal mucosa of rats.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the in vitro potential of axially 1-morpholiniumpropan-2-ol disubstituted silicon (IV) phthalocyanine (SiPc) which was synthesized previously, on HCT-116 cells as a photodynamic therapy (PDT) agent. The singlet oxygen and photodegradation quantum yields of SiPc were calculated using UV-vis spectrophotometer. The cytotoxic and phototoxic effects of SiPc were evaluated by 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining kit, cell cycle kit, and mitochondria membrane potential (ΔΨm) assay kit with JC-1 were used to indicate the cell death pathway. Caspase-3 and β-catenin protein expressions were evaluated by western blotting. The singlet oxygen and photodegradation quantum yields of SiPc were calculated as 0.73 and 3.64 × 10-4 in DMSO. The cell viability assays showed that IC50 value of SiPc did not reach to 100 μM without irradiation. However, excellent phototoxicity was observed in the presence of SiPc upon light irradiation. The cells undergoing early/late apoptosis significantly increased in the presence SiPc at 5 μM upon light irradiation. Besides, the proportion of cells at S and G2/M phase increased. Moreover, mitochondria membrane potentials significantly decreased at 1 and 5 μM of SiPc with light irradiation. While caspase-3 expression increased, β-catenin expression significantly decreased on HCT-116 in the presence of SiPc (p < 0.01). The results indicated that the PDT could be related to apoptosis and Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. Based on our findings, SiPc exhibited a significant PDT effect on HCT-116 cells therefore, worthy of more detailed study.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a common chronic infection of dental tissues. Ozone therapy (OT) and low level laser therapy (LLLT) are useful treatments for periodontitis. We investigated the effects of OT and LLLT on periodontal disease-induced bone destruction in rats with experimentally induced periodontitis (EP). We used 30 male Wistar rats divided into three groups: control, OT and LLLT. EP was induced by placing a 3.0 silk suture around the cervix of the left mandibular first molar tooth. OT was performed using an ozone generator at 80% concentration. LLLT was applied using a diode laser. Both OT and LLLT were performed for two weeks at two day intervals. Histomorphometric and immunohistochemical analyses also were performed. Alveolar bone loss was significantly less in the LLLT group compared to the control group. The number of HIF-1α positive cells was significantly less in the LLLT group compared to the control group. We found significantly fewer RANKL-positive cells in the OT group compared to the control group. The number of osteoprotegerin (OPG) positive cells was significantly greater for the LLLT group than for the control group. Although both treatments produced positive effects, LLLT appears to be more effective for increasing alveolar bone formation.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Mucositis remains a prevalent, yet poorly managed side effect of anticancer therapies. Mucositis affecting both the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract predispose to infection and require extensive supportive management, contributing to the growing economic burden associated with cancer care. Animal models remain a critical aspect of mucositis research, providing novel insights into its pathogenesis and revealing therapeutic targets. The current review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current animal models used in mucositis research. RECENT FINDINGS A wide variety of animal models of mucositis exist highlighting the highly heterogenous landscape of supportive oncology and the unique cytotoxic mechanisms of different anticancer agents. Golden Syrian hamsters remain the gold-standard species for investigation of oral mucositis induced by single dose and fractionated radiation as well as chemoradiation. There is no universally accepted gold-standard model for the study of gastrointestinal mucositis, with rats, mice, pigs and dogs all offering unique perspectives on its pathobiology. SUMMARY Animal models are a critical aspect of mucositis research, providing unprecedent insight into the pathobiology of mucositis. Introduction of tumour-bearing models, cyclic dosing scheduled, concomitant agents and genetically modified animals have been integral in refining our understanding of mucositis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Photodynamic therapy improves oral mucositis treatment. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated from this reaction could contribute to an anti-inflammatory effect by suppressing inflammatory cells. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of photodynamic therapy using guaiazulene and a red laser in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). METHODS Guaiazulene solutions (1, 2, 5, 25, 35, and 100 μM in 99.8 % methanol) were irradiated with red laser light (625 nm, 146.2 mW/cm2) in continuous mode at 0, 4, and 8 J/cm2 in black 96-well plates. ROS were measured using spin trapping technique with electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and fluorescence. The two highest concentrations were tested using cell viability (PrestoBlue®) and anti-inflammation (RANTES and PGE2 ELISA) assay kits. Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn Bonferroni tests were used for statistical analyses with significant differences at p-value < 0.05. RESULTS Guaiazulene solutions between 2 and 5 μM exposed to red laser light at 4-8 J/cm2 generated significantly more singlet oxygen compared to the no guaiazulene group (p < 0.01) and reduced RANTES and PGE2 levels in TNF-α-inflamed peripheral blood mononuclear cells without affecting cell viability. CONCLUSION Photodynamic activation of guaiazulene generated singlet oxygen and suppressed inflammatory markers in PBMCs.

Abstract
Cancer treatment with chemotherapy or radiotherapy is associated with some side effects including in the oral cavity. One of the more significant oral complications is oral mucositis (OM) which induces severe pain and limits fundamental life behaviors such as eating, drinking, and talking. Although advancements in cancer treatment improved the survival rate, severe OM and opportunistic infection affect treatment adversely. Therefore, the control of OM is important for oral health quality of life and prognosis. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and photodynamic therapy (PT) are noninvasive methods that reduce inflammation and pain during wound healing. The aim of this study is to evaluate immunohistochemical and histological examination of the OM region of the PT comparing LLLT. In this study, 24 Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups as control, LLLT, and PT groups. All groups received 5-fluorouracil intraperitoneally and a linear trauma to the mouth pouch with a needle. After the formation of OM in the mouth, the control group had no treatment; the LLLT group was administered LLLT, and the PT group had LLLT after indocyanine green application. Then all groups were sacrificed, and histological analyses and protein level detection of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), transforming growth factor (TGF-β), and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF-BB) were evaluated in all groups. PT was determined to be more statistically significantly than LLLT with bFGF and PDGF-BB. However, regarding TGF-β, no statistically significant difference was observed between the groups. Within the limitations of this study, indocyanine green may accelerate the LLLT effect. However, further studies on this subject are required.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Oral mucositis is an iatrogenic condition of erythematous inflammatory changes which tends to occur on buccal and labial surfaces, the ventral surface of the tongue, the floor of the mouth and the soft palate of patients receiving chemotherapy. This protocol of ongoing randomised parallel group clinical trial aims to access the therapeutic effect of an herbal gel containing 2.5% Arrabidaea chica Verlot standardised extract on oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer compared with low-level laser therapy. METHODS AND ANALYSIS Patients with head and neck cancer held at Clinics Hospital of University of Campinas, Sao Paulo, who develop early signs/symptoms of oral mucositis are eligible. Baseline characteristics of participants include oral mucositis grade and quality of life assessments. Enrolment started in November 2017 with allocation of patients to one of the study groups by means of randomisation. Patients will be treated either with Arrabidaea chica or laser until wound healing. Monitoring includes daily assessment of mucositis grade and diameter measurement by photographs and millimetre periodontal probe. Treatments will be concluded once mucositis is healed. A blinded assessor will evaluate mucositis cure after referred by the study team. At this point, the gel tube will be weighed to indirectly assess patient's compliance. At close-out, data will be analysed by a blinded researcher following the procedures described in the statistical analyses. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This clinical trial was approved by the ethics committee of research in humans at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of University of Campinas (report no. 1,613,563/2016). Results from this trial will be communicated in peer-reviewed publications and scientific presentations. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER RBR-5×4397.

Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Hypericum perforatum (HP) oil on wound-healing process in rabbit palatal mucosa. Materials and Methods: Thirty-six New Zealand albino rabbits were randomly allocated to following groups; (1) HP oil (test, n = 18) and (2) olive oil (control, n = 18). Palatinal excisional wounds were created and the oils were topically applied (0.1 ml, 30 s, twice a day). Gingival biopsies were excised, and analyzed for re-epithelialization (RE) and granulation tissue maturation (GTM) on days 3, 7, and 14 after surgery. Levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2) were assessed using the immunohistochemical method. Apoptotic cells (ACs) were evaluated using TUNEL staining. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to assess tissue catalase (CAT) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Results: RE and GTM were completed earlier in the HP oil group than in the control group. The number of positively stained cells/vessels was higher in olive oil than in the test group on day 3 for FGF-2 and on days 3 and 7 for VEGF (p < 0.05). In contrast, on day 14, a higher number of vessels was observed in the HP oil group than in the control group. HP oil treatment reduced the number of ACs compared to olive oil (p < 0.05), but the difference during the healing period did not reach significance. Tissue CAT and MDA levels between groups were not different, and also the results were the same when the levels were analyzed by the evaluated time periods (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrated that topical HP oil treatment did not provide an additional benefit to its base, olive oil, in the early phase of secondary wound healing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral mucositis is a side effect of treatment regimens containing 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). The purpose of this study was to present our evaluation to see if rosiglitazone (RGZ) protected normal tissues from chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis. METHODS C57BL/6J mice were treated with 5-FU for 5 days, with or without RGZ. Mice were euthanized after 5, 8, 11, or 15 days, and mucosal segments were collected. RESULTS The RGZ did not affect the 5-FU-induced decrease in mouse body weight. The 5-FU caused loss of epithelial architecture, collagen fiber impairment, and inflammatory infiltration. The RGZ reduced leukocyte infiltration, preserved tissue structure, and dampened the 5-FU-induced expression of p53 and matrix metalloproteinase (Mmp)-2 after 5 days, and of Mmp-2 and interleukin (Il-1β after 15 days. The RGZ inhibited the 5-FU-induced increase of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) proteins and restored collagen protein levels. CONCLUSION The RGZ had a protective effect on oral mucosa damaged by chemotherapy. These data encourage the further study of RGZ for the prevention of 5-FU-induced mucositis in patients with cancer.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of systemic administration of probiotics (PROB) on the progression of experimentally induced oral and intestinal mucositis in rats immunosuppressed by chemotherapy (5-fluorouracil: 5-FU). Twenty-four rats were divided into the following groups (n=6): GC (control), GPROB, G5FU and G5-FU/PROB. Groups GPROB and G5-FU/PROB received 1 g of probiotic incorporated into each 100 g of feed (Bacillus subtilis, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Enterococcus faecium and Lactobacilllus acidophilus), beginning 30 days before oral mucositis induction. Groups G5FU and G5-FU/PROB received 60 mg/kg of 5-FU on days 0 and 2. The left oral mucosa of each animal was irritated by mechanical trauma (days 1 and 2). On days 3 and 7, three animals from each group were sacrificed, and their oral mucosa and small intestine were biopsied and processed for histopathological analysis. Groups G5-FU and G5-FU/PROB showed ulcerated oral lesions at day 3, with progression in group G5-FU and regression in group G5-FU/PROB at day 7. Histologically, less severe signs of inflammation in the oral mucosa were observed in group G5-FU/PROB than in group G5-FU. Regarding the intestine, villus-related defects of lesser magnitude were observed in group G5-FU/PROB, compared with group G5-FU. Group GPROB showed greater villus height than group GC. It can be concluded that probiotic supplementation reduced oral and intestinal inflammation in immunosuppressed rats with experimentally induced mucositis, and may protect the intestine from changes induced by chemotherapy, thus contributing to overall health.
