Abstract
BACKGROUND Malnutrition and epilepsy share a complex bidirectional relationship, with malnutrition serving as a potential risk factor for epilepsy development, while epilepsy, in turn, often exerts profound effects on nutritional status. Nutritional interventions have emerged as a critical adjunctive approach in epilepsy management.
AIM To explore the multifaceted associations between malnutrition and epilepsy, structured into three primary sections: (1) Elucidating the impact of malnutrition as a risk factor for epilepsy onset; (2) Examining the reciprocal influence of epilepsy on nutritional status, and (3) Evaluating diverse nutritional interventions in the management of epilepsy.
METHODS A systematic search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases utilizing defined keywords related to malnutrition, epilepsy, and nutritional interventions. Inclusion criteria encompassed various study types, including clinical trials, animal models, cohort studies, case reports, meta-analyses, systematic reviews, guidelines, editorials, and review articles. Four hundred sixteen pertinent references were identified, with 198 review articles, 153 research studies, 21 case reports, 24 meta-analyses, 14 systematic reviews, 4 guidelines, and 2 editorials meeting the predefined criteria.
RESULTS The review revealed the intricate interplay between malnutrition and epilepsy, highlighting malnutrition as a potential risk factor in epilepsy development and elucidating how epilepsy often leads to nutritional deficiencies. Findings underscored the importance of nutritional interventions in managing epilepsy, showing their impact on seizure frequency, neuronal function, and overall brain health.
CONCLUSION This systematic review emphasizes the bidirectional relationship between malnutrition and epilepsy while emphasizing the critical role of nutritional management in epilepsy treatment. The multifaceted insights underscore the need for a holistic approach to addressing nutritional aspects alongside conventional epilepsy management strategies.

Abstract
Overabundance of reactive oxygen species (oxidative distress) leads to redox homeostasis disturbance and is associated with many pathological conditions. Accumulating evidence suggests that oxidative distress may contribute to osteoporosis. This review thoroughly outlines the relationships among osteoporosis, redox homeostasis, and alcohol addiction, since these relations are not sufficiently known and subsequently summarized. The brain-bone axis plays a crucial role in alcohol-induced damage to the nervous and skeletal systems. Alterations in the nervous system can lead to osteoporosis because the central nervous system is involved in bone remodeling through various neural pathways. Conversely, as an endocrine organ, bone secretes a number of bone-derived factors (osteokines), which can influence brain function and behavior. As a result, osteoporosis is more common in individuals with neurological disorders, and sudden neurological events can rapidly increase the risk of osteoporosis. Excessive alcohol consumption is linked to many neurological complications, as well as osteoporosis, which are manifested by disrupted redox homeostasis, inflammation, neurodegeneration, inhibition of neurogenesis, decreased bone mineral density, impaired bone microarchitecture, altered mineral homeostasis, raising fracture risk, hormonal dysregulation, and altered gut microbiota composition. Compared to men, alcohol dependence has more negative consequences for women, including an increased risk of liver, cardiovascular, metabolic, mental disorders, and breast cancer. Abstinence has been demonstrated to improve bone and brain health in alcohol addiction. The discovery of the brain-bone axis may lead to the development of new therapeutic approaches for alcohol and other substance addictions. Further research is needed in this direction, as many questions remain unanswered.

Abstract
The triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) and the triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein ratio (TG/HDL-c) are novel indicators for assessing insulin resistance (IR) in epidemiological studies. This study aimed to evaluate the association between 25-hydroxy-vitamin D [25(OH)D] levels and these two indicators in the adult population of the United States. 14,380 participants aged 20 years and older were included from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Multivariable linear regression models were used to analyze the association between 25(OH)D and TyG, as well as TG/HDL-c. Smooth fitting curves were employed to identify potential non-linear relationships between 25(OH)D, TyG, and TG/HDL-c. The findings revealed a negative association between 25(OH)D and TyG, with the effect being more pronounced in males and individuals with diabetes (p < 0.01). Similarly, 25(OH)D was negatively associated with TG/HDL-c, with a stronger impact observed in males compared to females. The study population was divided into four quartiles based on 25(OH)D concentration, and TyG and TG/HDL-c levels in Q3 and Q4 were lower than those in Q1. Furthermore, a non-linear relationship was observed between 25(OH)D and TyG, with an inflection point at 19.352 ng/mL. A non-linear relationship was also found between TG/HDL-c and 25(OH)D, with an inflection point at 37.211 ng/mL. 25(OH)D is an independent factor significantly associated with TyG and TG/HDL-c indexes. This negative association may be related to the role of 25(OH)D in insulin resistance.

Abstract
Oral health is intricately related to systemic health, with new worldwide research demonstrating vitamin D's critical role in sustaining dental and periodontal health. Vitamin D regulates calcium and phosphate metabolism, which is required for the formation and maintenance of healthy teeth and bones. According to research, vitamin D deficiency may contribute to the etiology of periodontal disease by decreasing the host immune response, making it more susceptible to infections like gingivitis and periodontitis. Oral health in India is a tapestry of traditional practices, socioeconomic factors, lifestyle factors, and access to modern healthcare, all of which are intricately linked with the concept of habitus, which refers to deeply embedded habits, dispositions, and practices shaped by an individual's social space. Deep-rooted social and cultural influences have a substantial impact on oral hygiene practices, food patterns, and health-seeking behaviours. Oral diseases are considered as a worldwide health issue. Though standard Western medicine has had effectiveness in preventing and treating periodontal diseases and other oral disorders, the hunt for alternative solutions continues, and natural phytochemicals extracted from plants used in traditional medicine are regarded as viable alternatives to synthetic chemicals. India's traditional medical knowledge and practice, take a comprehensive approach to oral health, emphasizing the balance of physiological components and the use of natural treatments to maintain oral hygiene and treat oral disorders. However, the structural integrity of teeth and optimal oral health can be accomplished by combining Indian traditional medical practices with vitamin D supplementation, which has synergistic attributes for gum health, anti-inflammatory effects, and dental caries prevention. Nevertheless, the unique association of oral health, vitamin D deficiency and the habitus from Indian perspective is extremely underrepresented in academia. To the best of our knowledge, in the aforementioned context, the present narrative review is probably the maiden attempt to discern the crosstalk of oral health and Vitamin D from the perspectives of Indian habitus.

Abstract
The widespread prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among young elite soccer players living above 40° north latitude is a significant issue. Considering the adverse effects of vitamin D deficiency, it is crucial to investigate its prevalence and the effectiveness of self-used preventive strategies among high-risk groups. This study involved 209 young athletes (aged 7-18 years, mean age: 12.79 ± 3.04 years, weight: 50.11 ± 17.75 kg, height: 1.60 ± 0.19 m, and BMI: 18.69 ± 2.75) from a leading soccer academy, residing above 55° north latitude. Blood samples were collected in winter to analyze the total 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. High prevalence of insufficiency (38.3%) and deficiency (26.8%) of 25(OH)D was identified. There were no significant differences in the severity of deficiency among different age groups (6-9 years, 10-14 years, and 15-18 years) or during growth spurts. The analysis of self-used preventive methods showed no significant differences between the compared groups (p=0.149). Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency are widespread among young elite soccer players living above 55° north latitude and training indoors. The effectiveness of self-used preventive methods is considered low.

Abstract
Background Vitamin D deficiency is a growing global health concern that affects populations, even in sun-rich regions such as Lebanon. Despite abundant sunlight, limited research has explored the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to vitamin D among young Lebanese adults. Study design This study employed an online quantitative cross-sectional design. Methods A self-administered online questionnaire distributed over six months (from August 2023 to January 2024) collected data on the participants' demographic characteristics, as well as their knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to vitamin D. Results Most participants (75.7%) had sufficient knowledge about vitamin D sources. The internet and physicians emerged as the dominant sources, cited by 175 participants, which represented 17.6% of the total responses related to vitamin D knowledge sources. Sunlight was perceived by the participants as the most crucial source. Additionally, 244 (33.7%) of the participants acknowledged the role of vitamin D in preventing osteoporosis, whereas 144 (20.4%) believed that it was aiding in calcium absorption. Significant levels of knowledge (defined as scores of ≥21 out of 40) and positive attitudes (defined as ≥4 correct answers out of six) were evident among more than 255 (75%) of the participants. However, over half expressed concerns about their vitamin D levels. Most were willing to take supplements (330, 92.7%) and undergo testing (326, 92.1%). Conclusion Although young Lebanese adults demonstrated good overall knowledge and positive attitudes toward vitamin D deficiency, implementing comprehensive awareness campaigns and health programs that emphasize behavior change is crucial for combating deficiency. These initiatives should focus on promoting tangible changes in practices, such as safe sun exposure, the consumption of vitamin D-rich foods, and adherence to testing and supplementation when necessary.

Abstract
Individual variations in the active form of vitamin D (Vit.D) arise from a combination of dietary intake, sun exposure, and genetic factors, making it complex and challenging to maintain optimal levels. Among Vit.D-related genes, variations in CYP2R1 and CYP27B1 influence Vit.D synthesis, CYP24A1 regulates its inactivation, and the Vit.D receptor (VDR) mediates Vit.D signaling. These genetic variations contribute to substantial differences in Vit.D concentrations and associated clinical effects. However, there has been a lack of comprehensive, simultaneous exploration of these key genes and their clinical implications. This review provides a systematic analysis of genetic variants in Vit.D-related P450 genes identified in human clinical studies, along with in silico predictions of their functional consequences. Since multiple genes seem to influence the body's response to Vit.D, studying just one genetic variant may not fully explain Vit.D deficiency. A comprehensive evaluation of all Vit.D-related genes could offer valuable insights for advancing personalized medicine in Vit.D management. This study provides a foundation for developing a more personalized approach to Vit.D supplementation and regulation, guided by genetic information.

Abstract
Breast cancer is one of the leading reasons of mortality due to cancer globally. Estrogen receptor-positive (ER +) breast cancer being a significant subtype. The therapeutic potential of Vitamin D3 in cancer treatment has gained attention due to its ability to modulate key molecular targets and signaling pathways. This study investigates the anticancer mechanisms of Vitamin D3 in MCF-7 breast cancer cells using network pharmacology and omics technology approach. Utilizing protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks, we identified several critical protein targets involved in breast cancer progression, including ESR1, ESR2, PGR, IGF1R, and KDR. Pathway enrichment analyses highlighted Vitamin D3's impact on pivotal signaling pathways such as the PI3K/Akt pathway, estrogen receptor signaling, and apoptosis regulation. In vitro studies showed that Vitamin D3 significantly inhibited cell proliferation in MCF-7 cells. It also induced apoptosis and disrupted mitochondrial function. Flow cytometry analysis demonstrated a dose-dependent increase in apoptotic cell death and S-phase cell cycle arrest. Confocal imaging and mitochondrial membrane potential assays further supported the findings, indicating mitochondrial dysfunction and chromatin condensation. Additionally, gene expression analysis in breast invasive carcinoma tissues confirmed the relevance of ESR1 and PGR in hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. Histopathological studies on DMBA-induced mammary carcinoma revealed Vitamin D3's protective effects, reducing tumor malignancy severity through anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic actions. These findings provide strong evidence for Vitamin D3's potential as a multi-targeted therapeutic agent in breast cancer, suggesting further investigation into its clinical applications and combination strategies with existing therapies as an adjunct or alternative in the treatment.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: Vitamin D is classically associated with calcium and phosphate homeostasis, but recent research has expanded its role to include several new roles such as immune regulation, inflammation, and potential anti-cancer properties. The vitamin D receptor (VDR) is expressed in over 400 tissues, including those of the head and neck, implying a potential link between vitamin D and head and neck cancers (HNCs). Given the need for newer and better therapeutic approaches, this systematic review aims to synthesize existing clinical evidence on the relationship between vitamin D status and clinical outcomes in HNC patients. Methods and Results: A comprehensive literature search, across multiple databases including PubMed, Google Scholar and Science Direct, identified 187,642 studies related to vitamin D and cancer, from which 16 studies met the inclusion criteria. The inclusion criteria were English-language, full-text original research (2015-2025) on vitamin D's role in HNC progression and treatment, focusing on human studies. The findings indicate that vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent among HNC patients, with rates ranging from 47% to 95%, particularly in advanced-stage cancers and those undergoing intensive treatment. Inverse association between vitamin D levels and HNC risk was reported, with higher serum 25(OH)D levels linked to a 30-32% reduction in cancer risk. Additionally, higher vitamin D levels correlated with improved survival rates and reduced recurrence, though some findings lacked statistical significance. Deficiencies were associated with higher rates of malnutrition and postoperative complications, reinforcing vitamin D's role in nutritional stability and surgical recovery. Conclusions: This systematic review highlights how common and significant vitamin D deficiency is among head and neck cancer (HNC) patients, exploring its possible role in cancer risk, prognosis, survival, treatment-related side effects, malnutrition, and post-surgical complications. The evidence suggests that while higher vitamin D levels are linked to better survival and fewer treatment-related issues, the benefits seem to level off beyond a certain point, indicating a more complex relationship. Additionally, vitamin D supplementation appears to help reduce chemoradiation side effects like mucositis, skin toxicity, dysphagia, and pain, ultimately improving patients' quality of life during treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Epidemiologic studies have shown that serum vitamin D (VD) deficiency is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and CVDs-mortality. Klotho is a well-recognized anti-aging protein. However, it is limited understanding the role of Klotho on the association of serum VD and CVDs risk. This study aimed to explore the role of serum Klotho on the association between serum VD and CVDs risk. METHODS AND RESULTS Totally 12,634 subjects were included from NHANES (2007-2016), of whom 1365 (10.80 %) had CVDs. Subjects were divided into serum VD deficient group sufficient group with the cutoff value of 50 nmol/L. Serum Klotho concentrations were detected by ELISA kit. Weighted univariate and multivariate were utilized to explore the association of serum Klotho, serum VD and CVDs risk, with odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs). Subjects with deficient serum VD had a 56 % increase in CVDs risk (OR = 1.56, 95%CI: 1.21-2.00); subjects with deficient serum VD and low serum Klotho have the highest CVDs risk (OR = 1.58, 95%CI: 1.19-2.11). We further found the association of low serum VD and CVDs risk was only observed in low serum Klotho concentration (OR = 1.74, 95%CI: 1.27-2.39), these results suggested serum Klotho concentration play a moderating effect on the association of serum VD concentration and CVDs risk. The results of subgroup analyses suggested these moderating effects were more prominent in subjects with overweight/obese (OR = 1.85, 9 %%CI: 1.25-2.72), and with the history of hypertension (OR = 1.87, 9 %%CI: 1.32-2.65) and dyslipidemia (OR = 1.81, 95%CI: 1.32-2.49). CONCLUSIONS Low serum VD was associated with high CVDs risk and high serum Klotho may play a moderating effect on the association between serum VD and CVDs risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Numerous studies have highlighted the nutritional imbalances that are commonly observed in children and adolescents diagnosed with celiac disease (CD) who follow a gluten-free diet (GFD). However, the development and timeline of these nutritional deficiencies remain unclear. The aim of the present study is to investigate the short-term (≥6 months to <12 months) and long-term (≥12 months) association between adherence to a GFD and nutrient intake as well as micronutrient blood status in children and adolescents aged from 0 to 18 years with CD. METHODS A systematic review was conducted in PubMed and Scopus for observational studies published up to June 2024. RESULTS A total of 15 studies (case-control, cross-sectional, and prospective studies) with 2004 children and adolescents were included. Their quality was assessed using the ROBINS-E tool. Despite the lack of high-quality data and the heterogeneity of the methods used in the included studies, the results of the cross-sectional/case-control studies show that, in the short term, children and adolescents with CD consumed excessive amounts of protein and carbohydrates compared to controls. After long-term adherence to a GFD, significant changes in the diets of children and adolescents with CD persisted. Fat intake was higher, while protein intake remained excessive compared to controls. Based on prospective studies, vitamin C and iodine intake improved both in the short and long term after adherence to a GFD. However, most other nutrients either remain inadequate or continue to decline, indicating that it is difficult to meet nutrient requirements despite dietary adjustments. CONCLUSIONS Gaps in adherence to dietary recommendations appear to be widespread in children and adolescents with CD, emphasizing the need for improved diet quality and regular monitoring.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early-life exposure to famine has been hypothesized to influence long-term bone health, potentially increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures in later life. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the association between early-life famine exposure and the risk of osteoporosis, bone mineral density (BMD) loss, and fractures. METHODS A comprehensive literature search was conducted across MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase, supplemented by manual searches on Google Scholar. Observational studies examining the impact of early-life famine exposure on osteoporosis, BMD, and fracture risk were included. Data were extracted and quality assessed independently by two reviewers, and meta-analyses were performed using the Mantel-Haenszel method for odds ratios (OR) and Hedges' g for standardized mean differences (SMD). Heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 statistic, and meta-regression analyses were conducted to explore potential sources of heterogeneity. RESULTS From 6147 initial studies, 10 met the inclusion criteria, with 8 included in the meta-analysis. The early-life famine-exposed group showed a significantly higher incidence of osteoporosis (OR = 2.12, 95%CI [1.35, 3.34], I2 = 88%) and fractures (OR = 1.58, 95%CI [1.07, 2.33], I2 = 92%) compared to non-exposed individuals. Meta-regression indicated that higher female prevalence in studies made the association with osteoporosis stronger, while higher ages strengthened the association with fractures. Exposure during fetal and childhood stages was particularly associated with increased risks of osteoporosis and fractures. Additionally, famine exposure correlated with lower BMD, particularly in the heels, femoral neck, and total hip regions. CONCLUSION Early-life famine exposure is significantly associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis, fractures, and lower BMD in later life. These results emphasize the lasting effects on bones from early lack of nutrition and stress the importance of specific interventions for bone health in groups with past famine experiences. Future studies should investigate the reasons behind these connections and assess preventative approaches to reduce the negative effects on bone health in those impacted.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the neuroprotective role of probiotics and 1,25-dyhydroxyvitamin D3 (calcitriol) against neurotoxicity on rotenone-induced human neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y. Rotenone was administered to induce neurotoxic effects in SH-SY5Y cells. Calcitriol and probiotics were administered at different concentrations as pre- and post-treatment. The thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was performed to measure cell viability. Intracellular protein levels of antioxidant enzymes (protein tyrosine kinase (PTK), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH), glutathione reductase (GSR), and catalase (CAT)) were determined by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Rotenone (150 nM) reduced (p < 0.001) cell viability compared to control cells. Single and combined pretreatments with probiotics (0.01 mg/ml, 0.05 mg/ml, and 0.1 mg/ml) and calcitriol (1.25 µM, 2.5 µM, and 5 µM) increased (p < 0.05) cell viability compared to rotenone group. In the pre- and post-treatment design, all treatment groups increased the SOD and GSH levels and decreased the GSR levels compared to rotenone. None of the pretreatments reversed the PTK levels (except probiotics: 0.01 mg/ml). Calcitriol (2.5 µM) increased the CAT levels in pretreatment design, and probiotics (0.05 mg/ml and 0.1 mg/ml) increased CAT levels in post-treatment design compared to rotenone group. Calcitriol and probiotics protect against rotenone-induced neurotoxicity in SH-SY5Y cells by decreasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and increasing antioxidant enzyme parameters. These neuroprotective effects of calcitriol and probiotics against rotenone-induced dopaminergic neurotoxicity provide an experimental basis for their potential clinical use in the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD).

Abstract
Vitamin D is increasingly recognized for its role in cardiovascular health beyond its well-established effects on bone metabolism. This review synthesizes findings from observational studies, interventional trials, and meta-analyses to clarify the mechanisms through which vitamin D impacts cardiovascular health, including its influence on vascular function, inflammation, and metabolic pathways. Additionally, this review emphasizes the importance of a personalized approach to vitamin D supplementation, integrating individual cardiovascular risk profiles, baseline vitamin D levels, and comorbid conditions, such as hypertension and diabetes. While current evidence supports the association between low vitamin D levels and increased cardiovascular mortality, this work contributes novel insights by proposing tailored strategies for supplementation, particularly for high-risk subgroups. Practical recommendations for implementing these strategies in clinical practice are also discussed, providing a framework for optimizing cardiovascular outcomes through individualized vitamin D management.

Abstract
Background As a group of more than 3.67 million people, the bone health of Chinese plasmapheresis donors, which the main population is also a risk group of osteoporosis (OP), has raised concerns. Therefore, this article investigates the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD), bone metabolism indicators, and plasmapheresis donation behavior among some high-risk plasmapheresis donors for OP in China, and further explores the mediating factors through reasonable statistical methods. Methods Recruiting long-term and highly active plasmapheresis donors and new donors to measure the total calcium, albumin (ALB), 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25OHD), parathyroid hormone (PTH), type I procollagen amino-terminal peptide (P1NP), and type I collagen carboxy-terminal peptide (β-CTX) and serum ferritin (SF). Then, multiple linear regression was used to adjust confounding factors. Using restrictive cubic splines to explore the nonlinear relationship. Using the Bootstrap method, investigate whether SF has a mediating effect between plasmapheresis donation behavior and bone metabolism biomakers. Finally, analyze the differences in BMD between the two. Results Compared to new donors, repeat donors have a lower 25OHD, β-CTX and SF levels, while P1NP and PTH levels are high, with statistical differences. The Bootstrap analysis results show that SF level is a partial mediating factor between plasmapheresis donation behavior and bone metabolism biomakers, with a mediating effect ratio of 21.8%. There was no significant difference in the BMD between the two. Conclusion Long-term and frequently plasmapheresis donation does not affect the bone mass of even elderly donors at high risk for osteoporosis under the existing collection standards and anticoagulant use in China. However, as a self-regulation way, it does increase the osteogenic activity of the body.

Abstract
Background: Vitamin D deficiency is increasingly recognized as a global health concern, with potential implications for cancer development and progression. This systematic review investigated the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in pediatric cancer patients and its potential impact on clinical outcomes. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library, to identify the relevant studies published between 2009 and July 2024. Studies were included if they assessed vitamin D status in pediatric cancer patients and reported on the clinical outcomes. Data extraction and quality assessment were performed independently by two reviewers. Results: The review included 20 original articles encompassing a diverse pediatric population with various cancer types. A high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was observed across the studies. Deficiency was associated with older age and lower socioeconomic status. Several studies reported associations between vitamin D deficiency and the increased risk of infection, poorer treatment response, and decreased survival. Conclusions: Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent in pediatric cancer patients and may negatively impact clinical outcomes. Routine screening for vitamin D deficiency and personalized supplementation strategies should be considered in this population. Further research is needed to establish optimal vitamin D management protocols and evaluate the long-term benefits of vitamin D repletion in pediatric oncology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) presents unique challenges related to feeding and nutritional management. Children with ASD often experience feeding difficulties, including food selectivity, refusal, and gastrointestinal issues. Various interventions have been explored to address these challenges, including dietary modifications, vitamin supplementation, feeding therapy, and behavioral interventions. AIM To provide a comprehensive overview of the current evidence on nutritional management in ASD. We examine the effectiveness of dietary interventions, vitamin supplements, feeding therapy, behavioral interventions, and mealtime practices in addressing the feeding challenges and nutritional needs of children with ASD. METHODS We systematically searched relevant literature up to June 2024, using databases such as PubMed, PsycINFO, and Scopus. Studies were included if they investigated dietary interventions, nutritional supplements, or behavioral strategies to improve feeding behaviors in children with ASD. We assessed the quality of the studies and synthesized findings on the impact of various interventions on feeding difficulties and nutritional outcomes. Data extraction focused on intervention types, study designs, participant characteristics, outcomes measured, and intervention effectiveness. RESULTS The review identified 316 studies that met the inclusion criteria. The evidence indicates that while dietary interventions and nutritional supplements may offer benefits in managing specific symptoms or deficiencies, the effectiveness of these approaches varies. Feeding therapy and behavioral interventions, including gradual exposure and positive reinforcement, promise to improve food acceptance and mealtime behaviors. The findings also highlight the importance of creating supportive mealtime environments tailored to the sensory and behavioral needs of children with ASD. CONCLUSION Nutritional management for children with ASD requires a multifaceted approach that includes dietary modifications, supplementation, feeding therapy, and behavioral strategies. The review underscores the need for personalized interventions and further research to refine treatment protocols and improve outcomes. Collaborative efforts among healthcare providers, educators, and families are essential to optimize this population's nutritional health and feeding practices. Enhancing our understanding of intervention sustainability and long-term outcomes is essential for optimizing care and improving the quality of life for children with ASD and their families.

Abstract
Introduction Identifying suitable biomarkers is crucial for exploring the pathogenesis, early screening, and therapeutic monitoring of lung cancer. This study aims to analyze comprehensively the associations between lung cancer and biomarkers in blood and urine. Methods Bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) was used to evaluate the potential causal relationships between blood and urine biomarkers and lung cancer. We obtained Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) related to lung cancer from the 2021 Finnish database of genome-wide association studies, including small cell lung cancer (SCLC), total non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), lung adenocarcinoma (LAC), and lung squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC).Data on blood and urine biomarkers were derived from the UK Biobank cohort, comprising 376,807 participants. Results We found a potential inverse causal relationship between total bilirubin and SCLC (β=-0.285, P=0.015, FDR=0.12). Urate was inversely associated with NSCLC (β=-0.158, P=0.004, FDR=0.036*). Serum calcium showed a possible inverse relationship with lung squamous cell carcinoma (β=-0.256, P=0.046, FDR=0.138), while urinary creatinine was positively associated (β=1.233, P=0.024, FDR=0.216). Non-albumin proteins (β=-0.272, P=0.020, FDR=0.180) and total protein (β=-0.402, P=0.009, FDR=0.072) were inversely related to lung squamous cell carcinoma. The AST/ALT ratio was positively associated with lung adenocarcinoma (β=0.293, P=0.009, FDR=0.072). Our reverse Mendelian randomization study found a positive causal association between small cell lung cancer and serum creatinine (β=0.022, P=0.002, FDR=0.018*), while it was inversely associated with the estimated glomerular filtration rate(eGFR)(β=-0.022, P=0.003, FDR=0.027*). A positive causal relationship was also observed with cystatin C (β=0.026, P=0.005, FDR=0.045*) and glycated hemoglobin HbA1c (β=0.013, P=0.014, FDR=0.028*). A negative causal relationship was observed with Gamma_glutamyltransferase (β=-0.013, P=0.019, FDR=0.152). For non-small cell lung cancer, a negative causal relationship was found with albumin (β=-0.024, P=0.002, FDR=0.016*), while a potentially positive causal relationship was observed with cystatin C (β=0.022, P=0.006, FDR=0.054). Possible negative causal relationships were also observed with phosphate (β=-0.013, P=0.008, FDR=0.072) and urinary potassium (β=-0.011, P=0.012, FDR=0.108), while a potential positive causal relationship was observed with C-reactive protein (β=0.013, P=0.040, FDR=0.280).Regarding lung squamous cell carcinoma, an inverse causal relationship was found with eGFR (β=-0.022, P=9.58e-06, FDR=8.62×10-5*), while a positive causal relationship was observed with serum creatinine (β=0.021, P=1.16e-4, FDR=1.05×10-3*). Potential positive causal relationships were observed with Urate (β=0.012, P=0.020, FDR=0.180), urea (β=0.010, P=0.046, FDR=0.141), and glycated hemoglobin HbA1c (β=0.020, P=0.049, FDR P=0.098), whereas a potential negative causal relationship was observed with sex hormone-binding globulin(SHBG) (β=-0.020, P=0.036, FDR=0.108).Lastly, adenocarcinoma was found to have a positive causal association with alkaline phosphatase (β=0.015, P=0.006, FDR=0.033*). Conclusion Our study provides a robust theoretical basis for the early screening and therapeutic monitoring of lung cancer and contributes to understanding the pathogenesis of the disease.

Abstract
As of the 7th of July 2024, 775,754,322 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 7,053,902 deaths worldwide, had been reported to the WHO (World Health Organization). Nevertheless, untill the 15th of July 2024, a total of 13,578,710,228 vaccine doses had been administered, with almost no country spared from COVID-19 attacks. The pathophysiology of this virus is complicated, and several symptoms require a deep understanding of the actual mechanisms. It is unclear why some patients develop severe symptoms while others do not, although literature suggests a role for vitamin D. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in the infection or in ameliorating the severity of symptoms. The mechanism of action of vitamin D and vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is well understood. VDD is associated with increased hospitalization of severely ill patients and increased levels of COVID-19-caused mortality. Recent studies suggest that vitamin D levels and genetic variations in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene significantly impact the severity and outcomes of COVID-19, especially in the infections caused by Delta and Omicron variants. Furthermore, VDD causes immune system dysregulation upon infection with SARS-CoV-2, indicating that vitamin D sufficiency is crucial in fighting against COVID-19 infection. The therapeutic effect of vitamin D raises interest in its potential role as a prophylactic and treatment adjunct. We evaluate the immunomodulatory effects of vitamin D and its ability to enhance the efficacy of new antiviral drugs like molnupiravir and paxlovid against SARS-CoV-2. This review discusses the role of vitamin D sufficiency and VDD in COVID-19 initiation and progression, emphasizing the molecular mechanisms by which vitamin D exerts its actions as a proactive step for the next pandemic. However, there is still no clear evidence of vitamin D's impact on prevention and treatment, leading to contradictory findings. Therefore, large-scale randomized trials are required to reach a definitive conclusion. A bibliometric analysis of publications related to vitamin D, immunity, and COVID-19 revealed a significant increase in research activity in this area, particularly in 2020-2024, underscoring the growing recognition of vitamin D's potential role in the context of the pandemic.

Abstract
Ghee, a traditional form of clarified butter, has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine for its numerous health benefits. Recent scientific studies have begun to elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which ghee may support bone and joint health. This review explores the bioactive components of ghee, including short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), and fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K2), and their potential therapeutic effects on bone density, joint lubrication, and inflammation. SCFAs in ghee can potentially improve joint lubrication and reduce inflammation. MCFAs and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) exhibit anti-inflammatory properties, modulating cytokine production and oxidative stress pathways. Vitamins D and K2 in ghee can play potentially crucial roles in calcium metabolism and bone mineralization, while vitamin A supports immune regulation and cartilage health. This review integrates traditional knowledge with contemporary scientific research, highlighting the potential of ghee as a complementary therapy for conditions such as osteoporosis and arthritis. By understanding the molecular mechanisms involved, future studies can focus on this field to shed a light on different effects of ghee on bone and joint health.

Abstract
Significant advancements have been made in cancer therapy; however, limitations remain with some conventional approaches. Adjuvants are agents used alongside primary treatments to enhance their efficacy and the treatment outcomes of patients. Modern lifestyles contribute to deficiencies in melatonin and vitamin D. Limited sun exposure affects vitamin D synthesis, and artificial light at night suppresses melatonin production. Both melatonin and vitamin D possess anti‑inflammatory, immune‑boosting and anticancer properties, rendering them potential adjuvants of interest. Studies suggest melatonin and vitamin D supplementation may address antioxidant imbalances in lip, oral and pharyngeal cancers. Moreover, promising results from breast, head and neck, brain, and osteosarcoma research indicate potential for tumor growth inhibition, improved survival, and a better quality of life of patients with cancer. The radioprotective properties of melatonin and vitamin D are another exciting area of exploration, potentially enhancing radiotherapy effectiveness while reducing side effects. For its part, the sleep‑promoting effects of melatonin may indirectly benefit patients with cancer by influencing the immune system. Thus, the prevalence of vitamin D and melatonin deficiencies highlights the importance of supplementation, as lower levels can worsen side‑effects from cancer treatments. The present review explores the potential of combining melatonin and vitamin D as synergistic adjuvants for cancer therapy. These agents have shown promise individually in cancer prevention and treatment, and their combined effects warrant investigation. Therefore, large‑scale controlled trials are crucial to definitively determine the optimal dosage, safety and efficacy of this combination in improving the lives of patients with cancer.

Abstract
Introduction Exposure to Bisphenol A (BPA) during early development particularly in-utero has been linked to a wide range of pathology. Over the last two decades the importance of vitamin D in maternal and child health has been highlighted. The aim of this pilot study was to examine the relationship of BPA and its naturally occurring metabolite BPA-glucuronide (BPA-g) with 25-hydoxy vitamin D (25OHD) levels in South African mother-child pairs. Methods Third-trimester serum maternal samples and matching cord blood samples were analyzed for BPA and BPA-g using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and 25OHD3 and 25OHD2 using high performance liquid chromatography. A total of 58 maternal and child pairs were analyzed. Results More than fifty percent of maternal-child pairs were noted to be vitamin D deficient or insufficient using the Endocrine Society Practice guidelines cut-off of 50 nmol/L. Spearman rank correlation and Kruskal Wallis analysis did not show statistically significant relationship between cord 25OHD (total) and maternal and cord BPA-g concentrations. Analysis of covariance after controlling for confounders showed a significant relationship between cord BPA-g levels and cord 25OHD levels (p=0.03) as well as between maternal BPA-g levels (p=0.04) and cord total 25OHD levels (p=0.04). Discussion The findings of the current study indicate a possible relationship with BPA/BPA-g and fetal/early infant Vitamin D levels that needs to be further investigated in this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Recent studies suggest that vitamin D supplementation and higher serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) concentrations may reduce the incidence of respiratory infections in children and adolescents. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the association between different concentrations of vitamin D supplementation, serum 25-OHD concentrations, and the frequency of respiratory infections among individuals aged 1 to 18 years, for a duration of 2 years. METHODS Concerning sun exposure in relation to vitamin D, the study took place in Romania, at approximately 45-degree northern latitude. A total of 194 patients were divided into groups based on weekly vitamin D supplementation (<400 IU, 400-800 IU, >800 IU), serum 25-OHD concentrations (<20 ng/mL, 20-30 ng/mL, >30 ng/mL), and age (<6 years, 6-12 years, 12-18 years). The overall incidence of respiratory infections was 41.2%. RESULTS Participants receiving >800 IU/week had a significantly lower incidence of infections (16.7%) compared to those receiving <400 IU/week (60.0%, p < 0.001). Similarly, participants with serum 25-OHD concentrations >30 ng/mL had an infection rate of 16.7%, compared to 61.4% in those with concentrations <20 ng/mL (p < 0.001). Age-specific analyses revealed that the protective effect of vitamin D was most pronounced in children under 6 years old. Logistic regression showed that higher vitamin D supplementation and serum 25-OHD concentrations were independently associated with reduced odds of respiratory infections (OR = 0.25 and OR = 0.22, respectively, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS These findings support the potential role of vitamin D supplementation in preventing respiratory infections in the pediatric population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The current literature lacks the correlation between serum levels of vitamin D and interleukin-8 (IL-8) to the stages of periodontitis. The present research objectives are to evaluate the serum levels of vitamin D and IL-8 in periodontitis participants and healthy controls and to measure their correlation with the stages of periodontitis. METHODS The current case-control study was conducted on patients with periodontitis and healthy controls. After obtaining a questionnaire from the participants, the following clinical parameters were measured; periodontal probing depth (PPD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP), and tooth count. The serum levels of vitamin D and IL-8 were measured using ELISA kits. Then, we measured the correlation of the stages of periodontitis with the serum levels of vitamin D and IL-8. RESULTS Ninety-eight participants; 52 with periodontitis and 46 healthy controls were included. The patients with periodontitis showed a significantly lower level of vitamin D, higher PPD, CAL, BOP, and lower number of teeth than the controls. In addition, serum vitamin D significantly correlated with the stages of periodontitis. Serum IL-8 showed no significant difference between the study and control groups while it does not significantly correlate with the stages of periodontitis. CONCLUSION The current study's findings suggest a potential association between serum level of vitamin D with severity of periodontitis which necessitates screening vitamin D status in patients with periodontitis and investigating the possibility of vitamin D supplementation in decreasing the progression of periodontitis.

Abstract
Denosumab is a human monoclonal immunoglobulin G2 (IgG2) antibody that is used in the management of osteoporosis and various bone-related disorders to help strengthen bones and prevent fractures. Declining renal function and the drug denosumab are both associated with an increased risk of hypocalcaemia. The combination of both factors in a patient, along with the long half-life of the drug, can cause further exacerbation of this risk. A thorough understanding of pharmacokinetics is therefore essential when encountering drug adverse effects. We present a case of recurrent severe hypocalcaemia secondary to denosumab administration in a patient with chronic kidney disease. This case report highlights the importance of close monitoring of calcium levels in patients with established risk factors for hypocalcaemia, as well as in those who have achieved resolution of denosumab-induced hypocalcaemia.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: Bone nonunion remains a clinical challenge in orthopedic surgery with significant impacts on mental and physical wellbeing for patients. There are several previously established risk factors of nonunion that are connected to nutrition, but this has yet to be substantially explored. This review seeks to assess all studies that present associations between nutrition and nonunion to understand the potential for clinical relevance in nonunion prevention. Methods: Case-control and cohort studies comparing nonunion risk based on nutritional factors were gathered through PubMed in July 2024. Data were extracted with dual verification through Covidence and assessed for bias using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Results: A total of 21 studies were included in this literature review. Vitamin D deficiency was a significant risk factor of nonunion in six studies and not significant in six other studies. Albumin was significant in three of the five studies addressing this lab value. Iron deficiency anemia was significant in a study assessing its impact on nonunion. Calcium was not significant in the one study mentioned. ICD-10-coded malnutrition was significant in one of the two studies. Sarcopenia, nutritional care plans, and dietitian-diagnosed malnutrition were statistically significant clinical indicators for predicting nonunion, but food insecurity was insignificant. Conclusions: Vitamin D, calcium, albumin, iron deficiency anemia, sarcopenia, and clinically diagnosed malnutrition have all been associated with an increased risk of nonunion in observational studies and should be considered when preventing nonunion development.

Abstract
This study explored the factors influencing serum 25(OH)D3 levels and the effects of Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and VD supplementation on 25(OH)D3 levels and neuropsychobehavioral development in premature infants, to provide a theoretical basis for improving their prognosis. Physical examination, neuropsychobehavioral development and serum 25(OH)D3 levels were assessed regularly in 158 preterm infants supplemented with VD formulation. 25(OH)D3 levels were analyzed at 3, 6, 9, 12, and 18 months after birth. The Gesell neuropsychological development test was conducted at 6, 9, 12, and 18 months after birth to obtain the developmental quotient (DQ). Based on the serum 25(OH)D3 levels at 42 days of age, the infants were divided into VDD and non-VDD groups. Preterm infants in the VDD group were supplemented with more VD until their 25(OH)D3 levels were normal, and were divided into sustained VDD (SVDD) and corrected VDD (CVDD) groups according to serum 25(OH)D3 levels at 3 months of age. Appropriate statistical methods were chosen to compare differences in 25(OH)D3 and DQ between or among different groups, screen for the factors influencing 25(OH)D3 levels in preterm infants at 42 days of age, and analyze the relationship between 25(OH)D3 and DQ. The 25(OH)D3 levels of preterm infants at 42 days of age were positively correlated with VD supplementation during pregnancy, and before 42 days after birth (P < 0.05). The 25(OH)D3 levels in preterm infants at 42 days and 3 months of age were positively correlated with the DQ levels at 6, 9, 12, and 18 months of age (P < 0.05). The DQ level in the VDD group, especially SVDD group, was lower than that in CVDD and non-VDD groups at the same time point (P < 0.05). This research thus demonstrates that VD supplementations during pregnancy and after birth is a major factor affecting 25(OH)D3 levels in premature infants. Early VDD and SVDD can affect their neuropsychobehavioral development, and effective VD supplementation can gradually correct VDD and mitigate this influence.

Abstract
Background Complications related to diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) due to diabetes are increasing. One of the factors influencing the management and treatment of complications related to DFU is the vitamin D serum levels of patients. Therefore, we sought to comprehensively review meta-analyses from randomized controlled trials and observational studies examining the link between serum vitamin D levels and DFU outcomes in diabetic patients. Methods We searched PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science until September 2024 and extracted the required data from related articles according to Inclusion criteria. The certainty of the evidence and the quality of conduct of the published meta-analyses were rated using the ASMTAR 2 tools, respectively. Result A total of 8 meta-analyses studies that met inclusion criteria were included. Based on the obtained results, it has been noted that individuals with DFU exhibit serum vitamin D levels significantly lower, ranging from -7.14 (5.44, 8.83) to -0.93 (95% CI: 0.17, 1.68) ng/ml, compared to those with diabetes but without DFU. Furthermore, individuals exhibiting severe vitamin D deficiency are found to be at least 1.82 times more susceptible to developing DFU. Conversely, administering varying doses of vitamin D supplementation has been shown to positively affect the size and number of ulcers in DFU patients. Conclusion This study suggests a potential link between lower levels of vitamin D in the blood and the risk of DFU, hinting at the benefits of vitamin D supplementation in improving outcomes associated with DFU. However, caution is warranted due to the potential bias present in the included studies.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore the causal relationship between trace elements and osteoarthritis (OA). The results showed a relatively weak association between copper and OA, while vitamin D showed a significant positive association with OA. Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was used to investigate the causal relationship between copper and vitamin D and OA. A variety of MR methods including inverse variance weighting, weighted median, MR-Egger, simple model, and multi-text mixed model were analyzed to confirm the consistency of these results. Sensitivity analysis further confirmed the reliability of these causal relationships and excluded the interference of pleiotropy. These findings add to the understanding of the potential role of micronutrients in the prevention and treatment of OA and support the idea of vitamin D as a potential therapy for the prevention and treatment of OA. Future studies should further explore the specific biological mechanisms of these trace elements and the differences in their effects in different populations in order to develop more effective treatment strategies to reduce the health burden of degenerative joint diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a sensorineural disease that is associated with a number of factors. In addition to age, sex, environment, lifestyle, and comorbidities are all known to be related to ARHL as well. The prevalence of ARHL can be reduced by controlling the adjustable factors that cause it. Vitamin D levels are strongly related to calcium metabolism, which can affect ARHL. This study aimed to investigate the association between vitamin D and ARHL. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A total of 1,104 subjects aged >65 years were enrolled from the fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which was conducted from 2010-2012. Every participant received both an audiological assessment and a nutritional survey. The association between ARHL and serum vitamin D concentration was analyzed using logistic regression analyses with complex sampling adjusted for confounding factors such as alcohol consumption, smoking status, mobility, and bone mineral density. RESULTS Our multivariable analysis revealed that males in the group with lower serum levels of vitamin D (< 20 ng/mL) had a higher prevalence of ARHL (odds ratio, 1.638, 95% confidence interval, 1.058-2.538, p=0.027). CONCLUSIONS This finding suggests that lower serum levels of vitamin D are associated with ARHL in the older male population.

Abstract
Osteoporosis (OP) is characterized by decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and increased fracture risk, poses a significant global health burden. Recent research has shed light on the bidirectional relationship between gut microbiota (GM) and bone health, presenting a novel avenue for understanding OP pathogenesis and developing targeted therapeutic interventions. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the GM-bone axis, exploring the impact of GM on OP development and management. We elucidate established risk factors and pathogenesis of OP, delve into the diversity and functional changes of GM in OP. Furthermore, we examine experimental evidence and clinical observations linking alterations in GM composition or function with variations in BMD and fracture risk. Mechanistic insights into microbial mediators of bone health, such as microbial metabolites and products, are discussed. Therapeutic implications, including GM-targeted interventions and dietary strategies, are also explored. Finally, we identify future research directions and challenges in translating these findings into clinical practice.

Abstract
Background: The aim is to assess the association between the level of vitamin D, maternal diseases, and macrosomia in newborns. Methods: This study included 258 full-term newborns (86 newborns with macrosomia; and 172 newborns with normal weight). Enzyme immunoassays for the determination of vitamin D were performed. Results: Newborns with macrosomia were statistically significantly more likely to have severe vitamin D deficiency compared with control (13.5 ± 6.7 ng/mL vs. 21.3 ± 12.1 ng/mL; p < 0.05). In the main group, severe deficiency was found in 40.7% of newborns, in the control group this rate was 5.8% (χ2 = 71,788, df = 3, p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis shows that statistically significant risk factors for the development of macrosomia were vitamin D deficiency in the cord blood (OR = 2.29), maternal age over 36 years old (OR = 19.54), and hypothyroidism (OR = 9.35). Conclusion: the results of our study demonstrate relationship between macrosomia in newborns and vitamin D deficiency in the cord blood, maternal overweight and obesity, maternal age and thyroid disease.

Abstract
We aimed to investigate the preventive effect of vitamin D2 on COVID-19 and the improvement of symptoms after COVID-19 infection. The study recruited 228 health care workers who tested negative PCR or antigen for COVID-19. Subjects were randomly allocated to vitamin D2 or non-intervention at a ratio 1:1. Subjects recorded PCR or antigen tests and the symptoms of COVID-19 twice a week during the follow-up visit. The concentration of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), C-reaction protein (CRP), complement component C1q and inflammatory cytokines were measured. The rates of COVID-19 infection were 50.5% in the vitamin D2 group and 52.4% in the non-intervention group (P = 0.785). There was no difference in the COVID-19 symptoms between the two groups. The mean 25(OH)D level significantly increased from 14.1 to 31.1 ng/mL after administration (P < 0.001). The difference between the two groups was not significant for the concentrations of CRP, C1q and inflammatory cytokines on the thirtieth day of the trial. According to the second level of vitamin D, there was a 14.3% difference in positive infection rates between the vitamin D adequate (> 30 ng/mL) and deficient groups (< 20 ng/mL). Adequate vitamin D had a tendency to prevent COVID-19.Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05673980, dated: 12/2022.

Abstract
Background Increasing attention to liver-bone crosstalk has spurred interest in targeted interventions for various forms of osteoporosis. Liver injury induced by different liver diseases can cause an imbalance in bone metabolism, indicating a novel regulatory paradigm between the liver and bone. However, the role of the liver-bone axis in both primary and secondary osteoporosis remains inadequately elucidated. Therefore, exploring the exact regulatory mechanisms of the liver-bone axis may offer innovative clinical approaches for treating diseases associated with the liver and bone. Methods Here, we summarize the latest research on the liver-bone axis by searching the PubMed and Web of Science databases and discuss the possible mechanism of the liver-bone axis in different types of osteoporosis. The literature directly reporting the regulatory role of the liver-bone axis in different types of osteoporosis from the PubMed and Web of Science databases has been included in the discussion of this review (including but not limited to the definition of the liver-bone axis, clinical studies, and basic research). In addition, articles discussing changes in bone metabolism caused by different etiologies of liver injury have also been included in the discussion of this review (including but not limited to clinical studies and basic research). Results Several endocrine factors (IGF-1, FGF21, hepcidin, vitamin D, osteocalcin, OPN, LCAT, Fetuin-A, PGs, BMP2/9, IL-1/6/17, and TNF-α) and key genes (SIRT2, ABCB4, ALDH2, TFR2, SPTBN1, ZNF687 and SREBP2) might be involved in the regulation of the liver-bone axis. In addition to the classic metabolic pathways involved in inflammation and oxidative stress, iron metabolism, cholesterol metabolism, lipid metabolism and immunometabolism mediated by the liver-bone axis require more research to elucidate the regulatory mechanisms involved in osteoporosis. Conclusion During primary and secondary osteoporosis, the liver-bone axis is responsible for liver and bone homeostasis via several hepatokines and osteokines as well as biochemical signaling. Combining multiomics technology and data mining technology could further advance our understanding of the liver-bone axis, providing new clinical strategies for managing liver and bone-related diseases.The translational potential of this article is as follows: Abnormal metabolism in the liver could seriously affect the metabolic imbalance of bone. This review summarizes the indispensable role of several endocrine factors and biochemical signaling pathways involved in the liver-bone axis and emphasizes the important role of liver metabolic homeostasis in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis, which provides novel potential directions for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of liver and bone-related diseases.

Abstract
This narrative review comprehensively explores the cardiometabolic implications of two vital nutrients, magnesium and vitamin D, during gestation. Magnesium, a key regulator of vascular tone, glucose metabolism, and insulin sensitivity, plays a crucial role in mitigating gestational hypertension and diabetes, a point this review underscores. Conversely, vitamin D, critical for immune response and calcium level maintenance, is linked to gestational diabetes and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. The authors aim to enhance comprehension of the complex interaction between these nutrients and cardiometabolic function in pregnancy, knowledge that is pivotal for optimizing maternal-fetal outcomes. The mother's health during pregnancy significantly influences the long-term development of the fetus. Recognizing the impact of these nutrient deficiencies on the physiology of cardiometabolic cycles underscores the importance of adequate nutritional support during pregnancy. It also emphasizes the pressing need for future research and targeted interventions to alleviate the burden of pregnancy complications, highlighting the crucial role of healthcare professionals, researchers, and policy makers in obstetrics and gynecology in this endeavor.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency has been a growing concern in recent years. Vitamin D is important in many of the body's physiological systems, such as the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and immune functions. A deficiency of vitamin D in athletes may negatively impact both muscle functions and recovery and, thus, affect performance and increase the risk of injury. Many studies assessed the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in athletes; however, as of today, there are no official recommendations/protocols for screening vitamin D levels in athletes, and only a few studies were performed in male and female elite athletes (i.e., Olympic level), in different sport disciplines. METHOD We investigated the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among athletes entering the Israeli Olympic team. A total of 761 samples of Vitamin D(OH)25 from 334 athletes were analyzed. For this analysis, we used the first test the athlete had performed when joining the Olympic team. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (<50 nmol/L, as defined by the Endocrine Society Committee) was investigated according to gender, types of sports and outdoor vs. indoor sports through the different seasons of the Israeli Olympic team athletes. RESULT Twenty-five athletes (7.5%) were diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency. One hundred and thirty-one athletes (39.2%) had insufficient levels of vitamin D (50-75 nmol/L). The highest incidence of vitamin D deficiency was found amongst gymnastics and combat sport athletes. A significant difference was also found in vitamin D concentration between seasons. Vitamin D average concentration in the winter was 74.1 nmol/L compared to 86.4 nmol/L in the Summer (p < 0.0005). CONCLUSIONS Due to the importance of vitamin D to athletic performance and the high prevalence of deficiency and insufficiency, we suggest careful and frequent monitoring of groups at risk, including elite athletes, especially in susceptible sports and during the winter. Future studies are necessary to investigate the effectiveness of Vitamin D supplementation in athletes with low baseline vitamin D levels.

Abstract
Longitudinal bone growth is mediated through several mechanisms including macro- and micronutrients, and endocrine and paracrine hormones. These mechanisms can be affected by childhood obesity as excess adiposity may affect signaling pathways, place undue stress on the body, and affect normal physiology. This review describes the physiology of the epiphyseal growth plate, its regulation under healthy weight and obesity parameters, and bone pathology following obesity. A literature review was performed utilizing PubMed, PMC, NIH, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews pertinent to hormonal and nutritional effects on bone development, child obesity, and pathologic bone development related to weight. The review indicates a complex network of nutrients, hormones, and multi-system interactions mediates long bone growth. As growth of long bones occurs during childhood and the pubertal growth spurt, pediatric bones require adequate levels of minerals, vitamins, amino acids, and a base caloric supply for energy. Recommendations should focus on a nutrient-dense dietary approach rather than restrictive caloric diets to maintain optimal health. In conclusion, childhood obesity has profound multifaceted effects on the developing musculoskeletal system, ultimately causing poor nutritional status during development. Weight loss, under medical supervision, with proper nutritional guidelines, can help counteract the ill effects of childhood obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Previous reports indicate bone deficits in patients with Fontan circulation. However, the consequences of these deficits on bone strength and when these changes occur are unclear. AIM To compare the tibial bone strength-strain index between young patients (6-19 years) with Fontan circulation and age- and sex-matched controls, and to determine strength-strain-index in subgroups of children (6-12 years) and adolescents (13-19 years) versus controls. METHOD The tibia was examined with peripheral quantitative CT. Based on the assessed data, bone strength-strain index was calculated in the lateral and anterior-posterior directions. RESULTS Twenty patients with Fontan and twenty controls (mean age 13.0 ± 4.4 years; 50% females) were examined. Patients had a lower strength-strain index in the lateral direction compared to controls (808.4 ± 416.8mm3 versus 1162.5 ± 552.1mm3, p = 0.043). Subgroup analyses showed no differences regarding strength-strain index in children (6-12 years) with Fontan circulation compared to controls. However, the adolescents (13-19 years) with Fontan circulation had lower strength-strain indexes in both the lateral and anterior-posterior directions compared to controls (1041.4 ± 299.8mm3 versus 1596.4 ± 239.6mm3, p < 0.001, and 771.7 ± 192.4mm3 versus 1084.9 ± 215.0mm3, p = 0.004). When adjusted for height, there were differences between patients (6-19 years) and controls in strength-strain indexes in both the lateral and anterior-posterior directions. In subgroup analyses, the results remained robust. CONCLUSION Young patients (6-19 years) with Fontan circulation have a lower strength-strain index in the tibia compared to controls. Subgroup analyses show that this deficit is mainly driven by the differences in adolescents (13-19 years), which might suggest that bone strength decreases with age.

Abstract
Vitamin D3 deficiency and insufficiency are becoming a common global issue for us, especially in the most industrially developed countries. The only acknowledged activity of vitamin D3 in vertebrates is to promote the absorption of calcium and, therefore, allow for the mineralization of bones. Accordingly, its deficiency is associated with diseases such as rickets. Other numerous vital functions associated with vitamin D3 are yet to be considered, and the function of vitamin D2 in plants is unknown. Thus, 100 years after its discovery, the importance of vitamin D still seems to be unacknowledged (except for rickets), with little attention given to its decrease throughout the world. In this review, I suggest that vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency may be linked to the westernized lifestyle in more developed countries. Furthermore, I suggest that, rather than the calcemic activity, the main function of vitamin D is, in general, that of strengthening living organisms. I conclude with the hypothesis that vitamin D deficiency may represent a marker for a greater risk of chronic inflammatory diseases and a shorter life expectancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Phosphorus is a vital mineral crucial for various physiological functions. Critically ill trauma patients frequently experience hypophosphatemia during the immediate post-traumatic phase, potentially impacting outcomes. This study aims to investigate the incidence of early hypophosphatemia in critically major trauma patients. METHODS In this prospective observational study, trauma patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) within one day were enrolled. These patients were categorized into Hypo-P groups and Non-hypo groups based on the development of new-onset hypophosphatemia within 72 h after feeding. The primary outcome assessed was the incidence of new-onset hypophosphatemia. The secondary outcomes included ICU and hospital stay, ventilation duration, and mortality. RESULTS 76.1% of patients developed a new onset of hypophosphatemia within 72 h after feeding. The Hypo-P group had significantly longer ICU stays (8.1 days ± 5.5 vs. 4.4 days ± 3.1; p = 0.0251) and trends towards extended hospital stay, ventilation duration, and higher mortality. Additionally, they demonstrated significantly higher urine fractional excretion of phosphate (FEPO4) on the first ICU day (29.2% ± 14.23 vs. 19.5% ± 8.39; p = 0.0242). CONCLUSION Critically ill trauma patients exhibited a significantly higher incidence of early hypophosphatemia than typical ICU rates, indicating their heightened vulnerability. The significantly high urine FEPO4 underscores the crucial role of renal loss in disrupting phosphate metabolism in this early acute phase after trauma. A significant correlation was observed between hypophosphatemia and longer ICU stays. Monitoring and managing phosphate levels may influence outcomes, warranting further investigation.

Abstract
Osteoporosis is a common disorder with a strong genetic component. Bone mineral density (BMD), vitamin D, and calcium levels declining are a main contributor of osteoporosis and fragility fractures. This cross-sectional study designed to explore the possible link between CYP2R1 rs10741657 polymorphism and BMD of the total hip, lumbar spine and femoral neck, vitamin D, and calcium in Iranian children and adolescents. 247 children and adolescents (127 girls and 120 boys) between 9 and 18 years old from Kawar (an urban area located 50 km east of Shiraz, the capital city of the Fars province in the south of Iran) were randomly selected based on age-stratified systematic sampling and recruited for genetic analysis. The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method was used for genotyping CYP2R1 rs10741657. Anthropometric, biochemical, and bone mineral density (BMD) parameters were also measured. The results specified that in the dominant [P < 0.0001, - 2.943 (- 4.357-1.529)] and over-dominant [P < 0.0001, 2.789 (1.369-4.209)] models, vitamin D concentration significantly differed between genotypes. The highest vitamin D levels were displayed for participants carrying the rs10741657 AG genotype (16.47 ng/ml). In regard to calcium, in a dominant model [P = 0.012, 0.194 (0.043-0.345)] and over-dominant model [P = 0.008, 0.206 (- 0.357-0.055), there was a significant association. AG genotype displayed the highest (9.96 mg/dl) and GG genotype the lowest (9.75 mg/dl) calcium values. This study reported the association of CYP2R1 rs10741657 polymorphisms with calcium and vitamin D levels in Iranian children and adolescents.

Abstract
Background Diabetes mellitus is already a major cardiovascular risk factor (CRF). Hypovitaminosis D is common in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). It also increases the cardiovascular risk of these subjects. Objective To determine the vitamin D status of Malagasy with T2DM seen at the Soavinandriana Hospital Center, and the association between hypovitaminosis D and CRF. Methods This was a cross-sectional study, carried out over a period of 2 years. Assayed by the chemiluminescence technique, vitamin D was "normal", "insufficient" and "deficient" if the 25-hydroxyvitamin D plasma was ≥30 ng/mL, 20-29 ng/mL and ≤19 ng/mL, respectively. Hypovitaminosis D was the set of vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency. Results Among the 318 T2DM, the prevalence of hypovitaminosis D was 66.0% (45.2% insufficiency and 20.8% deficiency). Their factors associated were age ≥70 years (OR = 2.15 [1.26-3.66]), glycated haemoglobin ≥7% (4.97 [2.97-8.39]), and retinopathy (OR = 4.15 [1.85-9.32]). After adjustment for age, Hb A1c ≥7% and retinopathy, hypovitaminosis D was associated with hypertension (OR = 8.77 [4.76-16.2]), dyslipidaemia (OR = 8.05 [3.98-14.5]), ex-smoking (OR = 6.07 [2.78-13.3]), microalbuminuria (OR = 2.95 [1.25-6.97]) and carotid atherosclerosis (OR = 2.96 [1.83-4.35]). Conclusion Hypovitaminosis D was common in T2DM. Its treatment is primarily preventive. It is also important to control associated CRF, diabetes and its complications.

Abstract
(1) Background: This study examines vitamin D's impact on dental caries to inform prevention strategies, given its critical role in bone and calcium regulation, vital for dental health. (2) Methods: Data from 18,683 participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2016 were analyzed. NHANES collects U.S. population data through interviews, physical exams, and tests, including vitamin D levels and dental health assessed using both the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index and the presence of untreated dental caries. Vitamin D levels were measured according to serum 25(OH)D concentrations, and the analyses adjusted for confounders such as body mass index (BMI) and socioeconomic status (SES) using Chi-square, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis tests, as well as logistic and Poisson regression. (3) Results: This study found a mean DMFT score of 7.36 and a 33.2% prevalence of untreated dental caries. A higher caries prevalence was correlated with a lower SES (p < 0.001), the male gender (p < 0.001), and a higher BMI (p < 0.001). Severe vitamin D deficiency (<25 nmol/L) doubled the risk of dental caries, with odds ratios of 2.261 and 1.953 after adjusting for demographic factors and BMI. (4) Conclusions: Our study confirms a significant relationship between low vitamin D levels and an increased risk of dental caries nationwide, even after accounting for sociodemographic factors, emphasizing the importance of maintaining sufficient vitamin D levels for preventing caries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients often experience accelerated bone turnover, leading to osteoporosis and osteopenia. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of osteoporosis in Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) patients using bone mineral density (BMD) measurements obtained through dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan and to explore any possible associations with clinical and biochemical factors. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled 76 peritoneal dialysis patients from the dialysis center at An-Najah National University Hospital in Nablus, Palestine. We used the DEXA scan to measure BMD at the lumbar spine and hip, with values expressed as T-scores. We conducted a multivariate analysis to explore the relationship between BMD and clinical and biochemical parameters. RESULTS Over half (52.6%) of the PD patients had osteoporosis, with a higher prevalence observed among patients with lower BMI (p<0.001). Higher alkaline phosphatase levels were found among osteoporotic patients compared to non-osteoporotic patients (p = 0.045). Vitamin D deficiency was also prevalent in this population, affecting 86.6% of patients. No significant correlation was found between 25 vitamin D levels and BMD. No significant correlation was found between Parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels and BMD. CONCLUSION A notable proportion of PD patients experience reduced BMD. Our study found no correlation between vitamin D levels and BMD, but it highlighted the significant vitamin D deficiency in this population. Furthermore, our analysis indicated a positive correlation between BMI and BMD, especially in the femoral neck area. This underscores the significance of addressing bone health in PD patients to mitigate the risk of fractures and improve their overall well-being.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Vitamin D plays a critical role in bone health, affecting bone mineral density and fracture healing. Insufficient serum vitamin D levels are associated with increased fracture rates. Despite guidelines advocating vitamin D supplementation, little is known about the prescription rates after fragility fractures. This study aims to characterize vitamin D prescription rates after three common fragility fractures in patients older than 50 years and explore potential factors influencing prescription rates. METHODS The study used the PearlDiver Database, identifying patients older than 50 years with hip fractures, spinal compression fractures, or distal radius fractures between 2010 and 2020. Patient demographics, comorbidities, and vitamin D prescription rates were analyzed. Statistical methods included chi-square analysis and univariate and multivariable analyses. RESULTS A total of 3,214,294 patients with fragility fractures were included. Vitamin D prescriptions increased from 2.50% to nearly 6% for all fracture types from 2010 to 2020. Regional variations existed, with the Midwest having the highest prescription rate (4.25%) and the West the lowest (3.31%). Patients with comorbidities such as diabetes, tobacco use, obesity, female sex, age older than 60 years, and osteoporosis were more likely to receive vitamin D prescriptions. DISCUSSION Despite a notable increase in vitamin D prescriptions after fragility fractures, the absolute rates remain low. Patient comorbidities influenced prescription rates, perhaps indicating growing awareness of the link between vitamin D deficiency and these conditions. However, individuals older than 60 years, a high-risk group, were markedly less likely to receive prescriptions, possibly because of practice variations and concerns about polypharmacy. Educational initiatives and revised guidelines may have improved vitamin D prescription rates after fragility fractures. However, there is a need to raise awareness about the importance of vitamin D for bone health, particularly in older adults, and additional study variations in prescription practices. These findings emphasize the importance of enhancing post-fracture care to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with fragility fractures. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE III.

Association between vitamin B2 intake and prostate-specific antigen in American men: 2003-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. BMC Public Health 2024; 24:1224. Abstract
BACKGROUND Accumulating evidence suggests a pivotal role of vitamin B2 in the pathogenesis and progression of prostate cancer (PCa). Vitamin B2 intake has been postulated to modulate the screening rate for PCa by altering the concentration of prostate-specific antigen(PSA). However, the relationship between vitamin B2 and PSA remains indeterminate. Hence, we conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the association between vitamin B2 intake and PSA levels, utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. METHODS From a pool of 20,371 participants in the NHANES survey conducted between 2003 and 2010, a cohort of 2,323 participants was selected for the present study. The male participants were classified into four distinct groups based on their levels of vitamin B2 intake. We employed a multiple linear regression model and a non-parametric regression method to investigate the relationship between vitamin B2 and PSA levels. RESULTS The study cohort comprised of 2,323 participants with a mean age of 54.95 years (± 11.73). Our findings revealed a statistically significant inverse correlation between vitamin B2 intake (mg) and PSA levels, with a reduction of 0.13 ng/ml PSA concentration for every unit increase in vitamin B2 intake. Furthermore, we employed a fully adjusted model to construct a smooth curve to explore the possible linear relationship between vitamin B2 intake and PSA concentration. CONCLUSIONS Our study in American men has unveiled a notable inverse association between vitamin B2 intake and PSA levels, potentially posing a challenge for the identification of asymptomatic prostate cancer. Specifically, our findings suggest that individuals with higher vitamin B2 intake may be at a greater risk of being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in the future, possibly indicating a detection bias. These results may offer a novel explanation for the observed positive correlation between vitamin B2 intake and prostate cancer.

Abstract
Microgravity in the space environment can potentially have various negative effects on the human body, one of which is bone loss. Given the increasing frequency of human space activities, there is an urgent need to identify effective anti-osteoporosis drugs for the microgravity environment. Traditional microgravity experiments conducted in space suffer from limitations such as time-consuming procedures, high costs, and small sample sizes. In recent years, the in-silico drug discovery method has emerged as a promising strategy due to the advancements in bioinformatics and computer technology. In this study, we first collected a total of 184,915 literature articles related to microgravity and bone loss. We employed a combination of dependency path extraction and clustering techniques to extract data from the text. Afterwards, we conducted data cleaning and standardization to integrate data from several sources, including The Global Network of Biomedical Relationships (GNBR), Curated Drug-Drug Interactions Database (DDInter), Search Tool for Interacting Chemicals (STITCH), DrugBank, and Traditional Chinese Medicines Integrated Database (TCMID). Through this integration process, we constructed the Microgravity Biology Knowledge Graph (MBKG) consisting of 134,796 biological entities and 3,395,273 triplets. Subsequently, the TransE model was utilized to perform knowledge graph embedding. By calculating the distances between entities in the model space, the model successfully predicted potential drugs for treating osteoporosis and microgravity-induced bone loss. The results indicate that out of the top 10 ranked western medicines, 7 have been approved for the treatment of osteoporosis. Additionally, among the top 10 ranked traditional Chinese medicines, 5 have scientific literature supporting their effectiveness in treating bone loss. Among the top 20 predicted medicines for microgravity-induced bone loss, 15 have been studied in microgravity or simulated microgravity environments, while the remaining 5 are also applicable for treating osteoporosis. This research highlights the potential application of MBKG in the field of space drug discovery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In observational studies, the 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) level in body has been found to be closely related to particulate matter (PM) air pollution. In this study, we used the two-sample mendelian randomisation (MR) method to investigate and discuss the potential causal relationship and mode of influence. STUDY DESIGN MR study. METHODS PM data (PM10, PM2.5-10, PM2.5, PM2.5 absorbance) came from the UK Biobank database, and 25(OH)D data came from European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) database. The analysis was conducted utilising three prominent methods (inverse-variance-weighted [IVW], MR-Egger, weighted median, weighted mode, and simple mode). The primary emphasis was placed on IVW, accompanied by heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy tests. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis was undertaken. RESULTS The MR analysis revealed a significant association between exposure to PM10 and a decrease in levels of 25(OH)D (odds ratio [OR]: 0.878, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.789-0.977). However, no significant relationship was observed between PM2.5 exposure and 25(OH)D (OR: 0.943, 95%CI: 0.858-1.037). Further analysis indicated that the main contributor to the decline in 25(OH)D levels is linked to PM2.5-10 exposure (OR: 0.840, 95%CI: 0.751-0.940) and PM2.5 absorbance (OR: 0.875, 95%CI: 0.824-0.929). No heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy existed. CONCLUSIONS The MR results suggest that PM (PM10, PM2.5-10 and PM2.5 absorbance) exposure lowers vitamin D (VD) levels, but PM2.5 was not found to have a significant effect on VD in humans.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency is a public health issue, with low dietary vitamin D intakes a contributing factor. Rates of vitamin D deficiency are 31% in Australia, and up to 72% in some regions globally. While supplementation is often prescribed as an alternative to additional sun exposure, complementary approaches including food-based solutions are needed. Yet, food-centric dietary guidelines are not always adequate for meeting vitamin D needs. Edible mushrooms such as Agaricus bisporus can produce over 100% of vitamin D recommendations (10 μg/day, Institute of Medicine) per 75 g serve (18 μg) on exposure to UV-light, with the vitamin D2 produced showing good stability during cooking and processing. However, mushrooms are overlooked as a vitamin D source in dietary guidelines. Our dietary modelling shows that four serves/week of UV-exposed button mushrooms can support most Australian adults in meeting vitamin D recommendations, and UV-exposed mushrooms have been found to increase vitamin D status in deficient individuals. While recent evidence suggests some differences between vitamin D2 and vitamin D3 in physiological activities, vitamin D2 from mushrooms can be part of a larger solution to increasing dietary vitamin D intakes, as well as an important focus for public health policy. Mushrooms exposed to UV represent an important tool in the strategic toolkit for addressing vitamin D deficiency in Australia and globally. Health authorities lead the recognition and promotion of mushrooms as a natural, vegan, safe, and sustainable vitamin D food source.
