Abstract
More than one billion tons of the food produced in the world ends up being wasted every year, accounting for about one-third of the food produced globally. For this reason, the problem of food waste management has been the focus of the different actors intervening in the food supply chains, who recognize that food waste has not only environmental but also economic and social impacts. This review focuses on foods of plant origin wasted at different stages of their life, namely primary production, transformation/processing, transportation, sales, catering and the domestic level. It addresses the subject from multiple angles, considering the environmental, economic and social perspectives. The review was based on a search carried out within scientific databases, for example, ScienceDirect, Scopus and the Web of Science. The results highlighted that in the generation and management of food waste from plant origin, there is a clear difference between developed and developing countries, with these last showing higher losses in production, principally the transportation and storage of the foods. Contrarily, in developed countries, excess food produced and not consumed is the strongest contributor to food waste. Valorization of agricultural waste and industrial residues for application into animal feed or agricultural fertilizers, or through the recovery of valuable compounds for industrial purposes, are some of the ways to deal with food waste while generating additional economic value and reducing environmental impact. However, there is still a need to modify processes and behaviors to reduce food waste and improve the sustainability of supply chains. Therefore, it is crucial to conduct research to identify and report food waste so that stakeholders can contribute positively to solving this problem.

Abstract
Citrus is one of the world's most popular and widely cultivated fruits. The processing of citrus fruits for juice extraction generates solid and liquid biowaste, a valuable bio-resource that can be utilized in various sectors, including food and non-food industries. Incorporating Circular Economy (CE) principles into the citrus supply chain offers numerous opportunities but also presents certain barriers. The existing literature lacks a comprehensive study that explicitly explores the obstacles hindering the implementation of citrus waste valorization. Therefore, this study adopts a systematic literature review approach to answer three research questions related to defining the valorization processes and pathways of citrus processing waste to achieve net-zero waste and to explore, classify, and analyze the barriers to the implementation of Circular Citrus Supply Chains (CCSC). One hundred twenty-eight distinct barriers have been identified and classified into seven categories: economic, regulatory, technological, informational, market-related, managerial, and logistical. The most significant categories for CCSC were technological, economic, and informational barriers. This study provides practitioners and academics with a comprehensive understanding of the valorization opportunities and the various challenges faced during the adoption of circular models within the citrus processing supply chain. The findings thus provide a platform for the development of more competitive and sustainable strategies for CCSC. Additionally, future work was proposed regarding stakeholder engagement, barriers investigation, valorization processes' technical and economic feasibility, the interrelationship between barriers, and the effect of integrating emerging technologies to advance the CCSC field further.

Abstract
The recycling of fruit peel resources is a current research hotspot. This study screened and configured a composite extractant consisting of peel and chemical extractant through extraction experiments and explored the heavy metals(HMs) release effect. The results showed that citrus reticulata(CR), citrullus lanatus (CL), 0.16 mol·L-1 nitrilotriacetic acid(NTA) with 0.04 mol·L-1 oxalic acid(NO5), and 0.12 mol·L-1NTA with 0.08 mol·L-1tartaric acid(NT4) had the strongest extraction ability. After the cross-combination was optimized, CR-NO5 (1:50, 6 h, 35 °C) and CL-NT4 (1:50, 36 h, 45 °C) had the highest extraction rates for Cd and Zn, which were 92.6 % and 98.4 %, respectively. The CL series increased the nutrient content of sludge (157.75-177.88 g·kg-1). The four combined extractants increased the proportion of soluble components of HMs in sludge (14-36 %). Therefore, the combined leaching agent will provide a valuable reference for the harmless treatment of HMs in sludge and the resource utilization of peel waste.

Abstract
Citrus peels, characterized by their low lignin and high sugar content, have been drawing increasing attention as a valuable lignocellulosic biomass with significant potential in biorefinery. Notably, in this study, the citrus waste was found to be enzymatically accessible without any pretreatment. Moreover, to promote the high-solids saccharification of the citrus peels, a tailored cellulase cocktail was formulated by response surface methodology (RSM), along with a fed-batch strategy aiming to obtain a high substrate loading. The study resulted in an optimized cellulase cocktail (7.08 U/g DM of β-glucosidase, 164.17 U/g DM of hemicellulase, 47.38 mg/g DM of sophorolipid, and 64.68 mg/g DM of Tween 80) and achieved solids loading of 22 % with a total sugar concentration of 123.84 g/L, corresponding to a yield of 93.12 % (65.28 % in batch operation). These findings provided essential validation for the efficient utilization of citrus waste, ensuring them promising potential as feedstock for sugar platforms.

Abstract
Although biomass is carbon-neutral, its use as a primary feedstock faces challenges arising from inconsistent supply chains. Therefore, it becomes crucial to explore alternatives with reliable availability. This study proposes a strategic approach for the thermochemical valorization of food processing waste, which is abundantly generated at single sites within large-scale processing plants. As a model biomass waste from the food industry, orange peel waste was particularly chosen considering its substantial consumption. To impart sustainability to the pyrolysis system, CO2, a key greenhouse gas, was introduced. As such, this study highlights elucidating the functionality of CO2 as a reactive feedstock. Specifically, CO2 has the potential to react with volatile pyrolysates evolved from orange peel waste, leading to CO formation at ≥490 °C. The formation of chemical constituents, encompassing acids, ketones, furans, phenols, and aromatics, simultaneously decreased by 15.1 area% in the presence of CO2. To activate the efficacy of CO2 at the broader temperature spectrum, supplementary measures, such as an additional heating element (700 °C) and a nickel-based catalyst (Ni/Al2O3), were implemented. These configurations promote thermal cracking of the volatiles and their reaction kinetics with CO2, representing an opportunity for enhanced carbon utilization in the form of CO. Finally, the integrated process of CO2-assisted catalytic pyrolysis and water-gas shift reaction was proposed. A potential revenue when maximizing the productivity of H2 was estimated as 2.62 billion USD, equivalent to 1.11 times higher than the results from the inert (N2) environment. Therefore, utilizing CO2 in the pyrolysis system creates a promising approach for enhancing the sustainability of the thermochemical valorization platform while maximizing carbon utilization in the form of CO.

Abstract
Citrus fruits are one of the most widely used fruits around the world and are used as raw fruits, but are also processed into products such as beverages, and large amounts of by-products and waste are generated in this process. Globally, disposal of citrus waste (CW) through simple landfilling or ocean dumping can result in soil and groundwater contamination, which can negatively impact ecosystem health. The case of Korea is not much different in that these wastes are simply buried or recycled wastes are used as livestock feed additives. However, there are many reports that CW, which is a waste, has high potential to produce a variety of products that can minimize environmental load and increase added value through appropriate waste management. In this study, we aim to explore the latest developments in the evaluation and valorization of the growing CW green technologies in an effort to efficiently and environmentally transform these CW for resource recovery, sustainability, and economic benefits. Recent research strategies on integrated biorefinery approaches have confirmed that CW can be converted into various bioproducts such as enzymes, biofuels and biopolymers, further contributing to energy security. It was found that more efforts are needed to scale up green recovery technologies and achieve diverse product profiling to achieve zero waste levels and industrial viability.

Abstract
Solidification/stabilization technology is commonly used in the rehabilitation of dredged sediment due to its cost-effectiveness. However, traditional solidification/stabilization technology relies on cement, which increases the risk of soil alkalization and leads to increased CO2 emissions during cement production. To address this issue, this study proposed an innovative approach by incorporating bentonite and citrus peel powder as additives in the solidifying agent, with the aim of reducing cement usage in the dredged sediment solidification process. The research results showed that there is a significant interaction among cement, bentonite, and citrus peel powder. After response surface methodology (RSM) optimization, the optimal ratio of the cementitious mixture was determined to be 14.86 g/kg for cement, 5.85 g/kg for bentonite, and 9.31 g/kg for citrus peel powder. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of the solidified sediments reached 3144.84 kPa. The reaction products of the solidification materials, when mixed with sediment, facilitated adsorption, gelation, and network structure connection. Simultaneously, the leaching concentration of heavy metals was significantly decreased with five heavy metals (Zn, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb) leaching concentrations decreasing by more than 50%, which met the prescribed thresholds for green planting. This study demonstrated the ecological benefits of employing bentonite and citrus peel powder in the solidification process of dredged sediment, providing an effective solution for sediment solidification.

Abstract
Herein we propose an ecofriendly process for the biofabrication of AgNPs by applying fruit waste of Citrus limetta. The aqueous extracts from the peels of the fruit were used as green chelating and stabilizing agents. Structural, optical, vibrational, morphological, and magnetic properties were established using UV-Vis (ultraviolet visible spectroscopy), XRD (X-rays diffraction), FTIR (Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy), EDS (energy dispersive spectroscopy), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), ESR (electron spin resonance), and PPMS (physical property management system), while the thermal properties were established using TGA/DTG (thermal gravimetric analysis/derivative thermogravimetry). XRD pattern revealed intense peaks with single-phase purity, while the Debye-Scherrer approximation revealed an average crystallite size of 33.18 nm. The W-H plot revealed the size of 55.2 nm and strain 2.68 × 10-4. FTIR spectra revealed the involvement of different functional groups and major IR vibrations were observed at 2329 cm-1, 2092 cm-1, 1794 cm-1, 1268 cm-1, and 754 cm-1. TGA/DTG revealed major weight loss events at 240 °C and 360 °C. SEM revealed spherical or quasi-spherical morphology, while EDS confirmed the presence of elemental silver. The M-H behavior for all measurement temperature shows diamagnetic behavior. Electron spin resonance (ESR) revealed a high proportion of free electrons. Furthermore, the pharmacognostic and nanomedicinal potential CL-AgNPs was established using multiple in vitro and in vivo bioassays. The in vivo wound healing assays in mice revealed excellent healing potential which were similar to positive control. The percent wound healing is reported to be 93% on the 14th day of incision after application of CL-AgNPs. Bioassays were performed to assess enzyme inhibition potential of the CL-AgNPs for Alzheimer disease and antidiabetic applications. The AChE and BChE potential of the CL-AgNPs was highest at 1000 µg mL-1, i.e., 92% and 56%, respectively. The α-glucosidase inhibition potential for the CL-AgNPs was higher as compared to the α-glucosidase, while the DPPH free radical scavenging was reported to be 70% to 11% at varying concentrations between 1000 and 62.5 µg mL-1. Overall, our results indicate that the waste fruit peels can be a sustainable and eco-friendly resource of synthesis of the multifunctional nanoparticles.

Abstract
Mucic acid holds promise as a platform chemical for bio-based nylon synthesis; however, its biological production encounters challenges including low yield and productivity. In this study, an efficient and high-yield method for mucic acid production was developed by employing genetically engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae expressing the NAD+-dependent uronate dehydrogenase (udh) gene. To overcome the NAD+ dependency for the conversion of pectin to mucic acid, xylose was utilized as a co-substrate. Through optimization of the udh expression system, the engineered strain achieved a notable output, producing 20 g/L mucic acid with a highest reported productivity of 0.83 g/L-h and a theoretical yield of 0.18 g/g when processing pectin-containing citrus peel waste. These results suggest promising industrial applications for the biological production of mucic acid. Additionally, there is potential to establish a viable bioprocess by harnessing pectin-rich fruit waste alongside xylose-rich cellulosic biomass as raw materials.

Abstract
In the processing of orange juice, 50-70% of the fresh fruit weight is converted into organic waste. Orange processing waste (OPW) primarily consists of peels, seeds, and pulp. Improper disposal of this residue can lead to greenhouse gas emissions, environmental pollution, and the wastage of natural resources. To address this ecological issues, recent research has focused on developing innovative process designs to maximize the valorization of OPW through biorefinery strategies. However, the current challenge in implementing these methods for industrial waste management is their significant energy consumption. In response to these challenges, recent studies have explored the potential of employing pulsed electric field (PEF) technology as a pre-treatment to improve energy efficiency in biorefinery processes. This non-thermal and emerging technology can enhance the mass transfer of intracellular components via electroporation of cell walls, thereby resulting in shorter processing times, lower energy inputs, greater retention of thermosensitive components, and higher extraction yields. In this regard, this review offers a comprehensive discussion on the innovative biorefinery strategies to the valorization of OPW, with a specific focus on recent studies assessing the technical feasibility of methodologies for the extraction of phytochemical compounds, dehydration processes, and bioconversion methods. Recent studies that discussed the potential of PEF technology to reduce energy demand by increasing the mass transfer of biological tissues were emphasized.

Abstract
Based on the concept of circular economy, citrus peel was considered a valuable source of bioactive compounds for high-value foods. Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) drying is a novel technology appropriated for the dehydration of heat-sensitive products such as citrus peel. In current work, EHD drying of citrus peel was performed based on alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) sources at various voltage levels (9, 18, 27, 36, and 45 kV). The effect of EHD on drying characteristics, water retention capacity, enzyme inactivation, phytochemical contents (phenolic compounds and carotenoids), and volatile compounds of citrus peel were evaluated and compared. Results showed that the drying time in the AC electric field was shorter compared to DC electric field at the same applied voltages due to the polarization layer formed by unipolar charges. The applied voltage determined electric field strength as well as the degree of tissue collapse and cell membrane rupture. EHD elucidated the transformation and degradation of phytochemicals including phenolic compounds, carotenoids, and volatile composition in proportion to the applied voltage. The findings indicate that EHD drying with AC improves drying behaviors, inactivates enzymes, and retains the phytochemical properties of citrus peel.

Abstract
The pyrolysis and in line steam reforming of different types of representative agroforestry biomass wastes (pine wood, citrus wastes and rice husk) was performed in a two-reactor system made up of a conical spouted bed and a fluidized bed. The pyrolysis step was carried out at 500 °C, and the steam reforming at 600 °C with a space time of 20 gcatalyst min gvolatiles-1 and a steam/biomass ratio (S/B) of 4. A study was conducted on the effect that the pyrolysis volatiles composition obtained with several biomasses has on the reforming conversion, product yields and H2 production. The different composition of the pyrolysis volatiles obtained with the three biomasses studied led to differences in the initial activity and, especially, in the catalyst deactivation rate. Initial conversions higher than 99% were obtained in all cases and the H2 production obtained varied in the 6.7-11.2 wt% range, depending on the feedstock used. The stability of the catalysts decreased depending on the feedstock as follows: pine wood ≫ citrus waste > rice husk. A detailed assessment of the mechanisms of catalyst deactivation revealed that coke deposition is the main cause of catalyst decay in all the runs. However, the volatile composition derived from the pyrolysis of citrus waste and rice husk involved the formation of an encapsulating coke, which severely blocked the catalyst pores, leading to catalyst deactivation during the first minutes of reaction.

Abstract
Staggering amounts of food waste are produced in Australia, and this review provides food waste based biorefinery opportunities in moving towards a circular economy in Australia. The current food waste scenario in Australia including an overview of primary food waste sources, government regulation, and current management practices is presented. The major food waste streams include fruit and vegetable (waste from wine grapes, citrus, apple, potato, and tomato), nuts (almond processing waste), seafood (Fish waste), dairy whey, sugarcane bagasse, and household and businesses. The composition of these waste streams indicated their potential for use in biorefineries to produce value-added products via various pathways combining direct extraction and biological and thermochemical conversion. Finally, the efforts made in Australia to utilize food waste as a resource, as well as the challenges and future directions to promote the development of concrete and commercially viable technologies for food waste biorefinery, are described.

Abstract
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death. Despite significant advancements in the discovery of medications for the treatment of cancer, these drugs are hindered by applicability and efficacy issues and frequently exhibit major side effects that can further impair patients 'quality of life. Therefore, the development of therapeutically sound anti-cancer medicines derived from natural products has gained prominence in the field of functional foods. Some of these compounds have shown efficacy in the prevention and treatment of cancer as well as low toxicity. Additionally, many recent studies have explored the recycling of agro-industrial waste to create bioactive chemicals. Citrus peels are produced in vast quantities in the food processing sector; due to their abundance of flavonoids, they may be inexpensive sources of protection against several cancers. Citrus is a common type of fruit that contains a variety of nutrients. In particular, the antioxidant chemicals found in citrus peel have been identified as potential cancer-fighting agents. Antioxidant substances such as flavonoids prevent the development of cancer by inhibiting the metastatic cascade, decreasing the mobility of cancer cells in the circulatory system, promoting apoptosis, and suppressing angiogenesis. To explore the most effective uses of citrus peel-derived antioxidants, this review presents background information, an overview of the role of citrus antioxidants in cancer therapy, and a discussion of the key underlying molecular mechanisms.

Abstract
The current research was conducted to extract the bioactive compounds from citrus waste and assess their role in the development of functional foods to treat different disorders. The scientific name of citrus is Citrus L. and it belongs to the Rutaceae family. It is one of the most important fruit crops that is grown throughout the world. During processing, a large amount of waste is produced from citrus fruits in the form of peel, seeds, and pomace. Every year, the citrus processing industry creates a large amount of waste. The citrus waste is composed of highly bioactive substances and phytochemicals, including essential oils (EOs), ascorbic acid, sugars, carotenoids, flavonoids, dietary fiber, polyphenols, and a range of trace elements. These valuable compounds are used to develop functional foods, including baked products, beverages, meat products, and dairy products. Moreover, these functional foods play an important role in treating various disorders, including anti-aging, anti-mutagenic, antidiabetic, anti-carcinogenic, anti-allergenic, anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and cardiovascular-protective activity. EOs are complex and contain several naturally occurring bioactive compounds that are frequently used as the best substitutes in the food industry. Citrus essential oils have many uses in the packaging and food safety industries. They can also be used as an alternative preservative to extend the shelf lives of different food products.

Abstract
Among the enzymes required for the efficient utilisation of pectin is polygalacturonase. Saccharobesus litoralis harbours two polygalacturonases belonging to glycoside hydrolase family 28 (GH28). One of them, PGQ1, cleaved polygalacturonate exolytically at the non-reducing end into monomeric units. It was most active at 60 °C and pH 8, with Km and kcat values of 2.3 mg/ml and 6.4 s-1 respectively. Its homology model of a right-handed parallel β-helix core consisted of Asp297 as the general acid and either Asp276 or Asp298 as the general base. By inferring the substrate binding modes at the -1 and +1 subsites from known crystal structures, a hexagalacturonate could be docked into the highly electropositive binding cleft. Interestingly, while no residues were present in the vicinity to make up the +2 and +4 subsites, Arg361 and Arg430 could readily bind to the carboxyl groups of the galacturonates at the +3 and +5 subsites respectively. Structural comparison suggested that this binding pattern with missing subsites might be unique to closely related exopolygalacturonases. As S. litoralis grew much more slowly on extracellular galacturonate due to the lack of a transporter for the monosaccharide, PGQ1 probably functioned in the periplasm to help degrade oligopectates completely.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Abstract
Research on producing medium- and long-chain hydrocarbons as drop-in biofuels has recently accelerated. In addition, lipids are emerging as precursors for biofuel production, and thus, microbial lipid production utilizing agrowastes is becoming a feasible platform technology. Nonetheless, microorganisms are often inhibited by furan aldehydes in biomass-derived hydrolysates. Accordingly, this study aimed to develop oleaginous yeast strains that can tolerate furan aldehydes for producing lipids as biofuel precursors. Rhodosporidium toruloides was selected as the target for adaptive laboratory evolution. The evolved strain, which was obtained from 16 rounds of subcultures, showed a 2.5-fold higher specific growth rate than the wild-type strain in the presence of furan aldehydes and slightly higher lipid production in rice straw hydrolysate. The results discussed in this study provide insights into the production of lipid production by oleaginous yeast utilizing agrowastes as feedstock to obtain drop-in biofuels and contribute to feasible strategies to address climate crises.

Abstract
This review investigates the development of bioproducts from biomass and their contribution towards net zero carbon emissions. The promising future of biomasses conversion techniques to produce bioproducts was reviewed. The advances in anaerobic digestion as a biochemical conversion technique have been critically studied and contribute towards carbon emissions mitigation. Different applications of microalgae biomass towards carbon neutrality were comprehensively discussed, and several research findings have been tabulated in this review. The carbon footprints of wastewater treatment plants were studied, and bioenergy utilisation from sludge production was shown to mitigate carbon footprints. The carbon-sinking capability of microalgae has also been outlined. Furthermore, integrated conversion processes have shown to enhance bioproducts generation yield and quality. The anaerobic digestion/pyrolysis integrated process was promising, and potential substrates have been suggested for future research. Lastly, challenges and future perspectives of bioproducts were outlined for a contribution towards meeting carbon neutrality.

Abstract
Citrus fruit waste (CW) is a useful biomass and its valorization into fuels and biochemicals has received much attention. For economic feasibility, increased efficiency of the preceding extraction and enzyme saccharification processes is necessary. However, at present, there is a lack of systematic reviews addressing these two integral upstream processes in concert for CW biorefinery. Here, the state-of-the-art advancements in enzyme extraction and saccharification processes-using which relevant essential oils, flavonoids, and sugars can be obtained-are reviewed. Specifically, the extraction options for two commercially available CW-derived products, essential oils and pectin, are discussed. With respect to enzyme saccharification, the use of an undefined commercial mixture routinely results in suboptimal sugar production. In this respect, applicable strategies for enzyme mixture customization are suggested for maximizing the hydrolytic efficiency of CW. The enzyme degradation system for CW-derived carbohydrates and its extensive application for sugar production are also discussed.

Abstract
Globally the generation and mismanagement of waste from fruit processing and post-harvest impose a severe burden on waste management strategies along with environmental pollution, health hazards. Citrus waste is one of such worrying fruit waste, which is rich in several value-added chemicals, including pectin. Pectin is a prebiotic polysaccharide possessing a multitude of health benefits. Citrus pectin has excellent gelling, thickening, water holding capacity, and encapsulating properties, which pave its functionality in versatile industrial fields including food processing and preservation, drug and therapeutic agents, cosmetics, and personal care products. The utilization of citrus wastes to derive valuable bioproducts can offer an effective approach towards sustainable waste management. With the ever-increasing demand, several strategies have been devised to increase the efficiency of pectin recovery from citrus waste. This review article discusses the sources, effect, and technology-mediated valorization of citrus waste, the functional and nutritive application of pectin along with its socio-economic and environmental perspective.

Abstract
Citrus fruits are extensively cultivated, consumed and major processed horticulture crops around the globe. High processing and consumption generate huge quantities of solid organic wastes. Citrus waste represents approximately 40-50% of total fruit weight, which consists of rag (membranes and cores), pulp, seeds, and peel (albedo and flavedo), which are a potential source of value-added products including essential oils, carotenoids, pectin, dietary fibers, and polyphenols biofuel, etc. However, waste produced is discarded as waste in the environment, which causes a serious threat due to the presence of bioactive compounds. Recent research strategies on the integrated biorefinery approach explore various ways to utilize the waste obtained from the citrus wastes for their subsequent recovery of value-added products. Moreover, the citrus waste can be turned into various bio-products, viz., enzymes, biofuels, and biopolymers using the integrated biorefinery approach, which can optimize the development of green waste for sustainability and economic benefits. Given the sustainable solution for resource recovery and environmental management, the article reviews the latest advances in the novel valorization approach and valuation of the existing state-of-the-art green technologies for citrus waste utilization to bring a sustainable solution for increasing demand for food, fuel, and energy security. To achieve the zero-waste approach and industrial viability, more efforts should be given to scale-up green recovery techniques along with diverse product profiling.

Abstract
Food supply disruption and shortage verified during the current pandemic events are a scenario that many anticipate for the near future. The impact of climate changes on food production, the continuous decrease in arable land, and the exponential growth of the human population are important drivers for this problem. In this context, adding value to food waste is an obvious strategy to mitigate food shortages, but there is a long way to go in this field. Globally, it is estimated that one-third of all food produced is lost. This is certainly due to many different factors, but the lack of awareness of the consumer about the nutritional value of certain foods parts, namely peels and seeds, is certainly among them. In this review, we will unveil the nutritional and bioactive value of the waste discarded from the most important fresh fruit and vegetables consumed worldwide as a strategy to decrease food waste. This will span the characterization of the bioactive composition of selected waste from fruits and vegetables, particularly their seeds and peels, and their possible uses, whether in our diet or recycled to other ends.

Abstract
As numerous industrial bioprocesses rely on yeast fermentation, developing CO2-fixing yeast strains can be an attractive option toward sustainable industrial processes and carbon neutrality. Recent studies have shown that the expression of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (RuBisCO) in yeasts, such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Kluyveromyces marxianus, enables mixotrophic CO2 fixation and production of biofuels. Also, the expression of a synthetic Calvin-Benson-Bassham (CBB) cycle including RuBisCO in Pichia pastoris enables autotrophic growth on CO2. This review highlights recent advances in metabolic engineering strategies to enable CO2 fixation in yeasts. Also, we discuss the potentials of other natural and synthetic metabolic pathways independent of RuBisCO for developing CO2-fixing yeast strains capable of producing value-added biochemicals.

Abstract
The increased consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains contributes to the reduced risk of many diseases related to metabolic syndrome, including neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, and cancer. Citrus, the genus Citrus L., is one of the most important fruit crops, rich in carotenoids, flavonoids, terpenes, limonoids, and many other bioactive compounds of nutritional and nutraceutical value. Moreover, polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs), a unique class of bioactive flavonoids, abundantly occur in citrus fruits. In addition, citrus essential oil, rich in limonoids and terpenes, is an economically important product due to its potent antioxidant, antimicrobial, and flavoring properties. Mechanistic, observational, and intervention studies have demonstrated the health benefits of citrus bioactives in minimizing the risk of metabolic syndrome. This review provides a comprehensive view of the composition of carotenoids, flavonoids, terpenes, and limonoids of citrus fruits and their associated health benefits.

Abstract
Nutrition is one of the most important factors determining human health. Enrichment of food products with minerals, antioxidant compounds, and vitamins are relevant today. In this work, dry orange peel was used to enrich a fermented drink based on kvass wort with phenolic compounds and vitamin C. The following indicators were determined: the content of vitamin C, the amount of phenolic compounds and anthocyanins, the antioxidant activity of orange peel dried to a moisture content of 18%. The drink fermentation lasted 12 hours at 30 °C. Secondary fermentation was carried out for 48 hours. At this stage, orange peel was added in the amount of 10 g/l. During the experiment, the concentration of dry matter content, the acidity of the medium, and the content of ethyl alcohol were measured. Organoleptic indicators were determined during the tasting of the finished product. In the finished drink, the content of ethyl alcohol was 0.98%. It was found that the finished drink with peel contains 4 times more phenolic compounds and 1.5 times more vitamin C.

Abstract
d-galacturonic acid (d-GalUA) is the main constituent of pectin, a complex polysaccharide abundant in several agro-industrial by-products such as sugar beet pulp or citrus peel. During several attempts to valorise d-GalUA by engineering the popular cell factory Saccharomyces cerevisiae, it became obvious that d-GalUA is, to a certain degree, converted to l-galactonate (l-GalA) by an endogenous enzymatic activity. The goal of the current work was to clarify the identity of the responsible enzyme(s). A protein homology search identified three NADPH-dependent unspecific aldo-keto reductases in baker’s yeast (encoded by GCY1, YPR1 and GRE3) that show sequence similarities to known d-GalUA reductases from filamentous fungi. Characterization of the respective deletion mutants and an in vitro enzyme assay with a Gcy1 overproducing strain verified that Gcy1 is mainly responsible for the detectable reduction of d-GalUA to l-GalA.

Abstract
Pectin-rich plant biomass residues represent underutilized feedstocks for industrial biotechnology. The conversion of the oxidized monomer d-galacturonic acid (d-GalUA) to highly reduced fermentation products such as alcohols is impossible due to the lack of electrons. The reduced compound glycerol has therefore been considered an optimal co-substrate, and a cell factory able to efficiently co-ferment these two carbon sources is in demand. Here, we inserted the fungal d-GalUA pathway in a strain of the yeast S. cerevisiae previously equipped with an NAD-dependent glycerol catabolic pathway. The constructed strain was able to consume d-GalUA with the highest reported maximum specific rate of 0.23 g gCDW-1 h-1 in synthetic minimal medium when glycerol was added. By means of a 13C isotope-labelling analysis, carbon from both substrates was shown to end up in pyruvate. The study delivers the proof of concept for a co-fermentation of the two 'respiratory' carbon sources to ethanol and demonstrates a fast and complete consumption of d-GalUA in crude sugar beet pulp hydrolysate under aerobic conditions. The future challenge will be to achieve co-fermentation under industrial, quasi-anaerobic conditions.

Abstract
Citrus fruits are consumed in large quantities worldwide due to their attractive aromas and taste, as well as their high nutritional values and various health-promoting effects, which are due to their abundance of nutrients and bioactives. In addition to water, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibers are important nutrients in citrus, providing them with high nutritional values. Citrus fruits are also rich in various bioactives such as flavonoids, essential oils, carotenoids, limonoids, and synephrines, which protect from various ailments, including cancer and inflammatory, digestive, and cardiovascular diseases. The composition and content of nutrients and bioactives differ significantly among citrus varieties, fruit parts, and growth stages. To better understand the nutrient and bioactive profiles of citrus fruits and provide guidance for the utilization of high-value citrus resources, this review systematically summarizes the nutrients and bioactives in citrus fruit, including their contents, structural characteristics, and potential health benefits. We also explore the composition variation in different citrus varieties, fruits parts, and growth stages, as well as their health-promoting effects and applications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lignocellulose biomass has been investigated as a feedstock for second generation biofuels and other value-added products. Some of the processes for biofuel production utilize cellulases and hemicellulases to convert the lignocellulosic biomass into a range of soluble sugars before fermentation with microorganisms such as yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. One of these sugars is L-arabinose, which cannot be utilized naturally by yeast. The first step in L-arabinose catabolism is its transport into the cells, and yeast lacks a specific transporter, which could perform this task. RESULTS We identified Trire2_104072 of Trichoderma reesei as a potential L-arabinose transporter based on its expression profile. This transporter was described already in 2007 as D-xylose transporter XLT1. Electrophysiology experiments with Xenopus laevis oocytes and heterologous expression in yeast revealed that Trire2_104072 is a high-affinity L-arabinose symporter with a Km value in the range of [Formula: see text] 0.1-0.2 mM. It can also transport D-xylose but with low affinity (Km [Formula: see text] 9 mM). In yeast, L-arabinose transport was inhibited slightly by D-xylose but not by D-glucose in an assay with fivefold excess of the inhibiting sugar. Comparison with known L-arabinose transporters revealed that the expression of Trire2_104072 enabled yeast to uptake L-arabinose at the highest rate in conditions with low extracellular L-arabinose concentration. Despite the high specificity of Trire2_104072 for L-arabinose, the growth of its T. reesei deletion mutant was only affected at low L-arabinose concentrations. CONCLUSIONS Due to its high affinity for L-arabinose and low inhibition by D-glucose or D-xylose, Trire2_104072 could serve as a good candidate for improving the existing pentose-utilizing yeast strains. The discovery of a highly specific L-arabinose transporter also adds to our knowledge of the primary metabolism of T. reesei. The phenotype of the deletion strain suggests the involvement of other transporters in L-arabinose transport in this species.

Abstract
Flavonoids are among the most abundant natural bioactive compounds produced by plants. Many different activities have been reported for these secondary metabolites against numerous cells and systems. One of the most interesting is certainly the antimicrobial, which is stimulated through various molecular mechanisms. In fact, flavonoids are effective both in directly damaging the envelope of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria but also by acting toward specific molecular targets essential for the survival of these microorganisms. The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of the most interesting results obtained in the research focused on the study of the interactions between flavonoids and bacterial proteins. Despite the great structural heterogeneity of these plant metabolites, it is interesting to observe that many flavonoids affect the same cellular pathways. Furthermore, it is evident that some of these compounds interact with more than one target, producing multiple effects. Taken together, the reported data demonstrate the great potential of flavonoids in developing innovative systems, which can help address the increasingly serious problem of antibiotic resistance.

Refining Citrus Wastes: From Discarded Oranges to Efficient Brewing Biocatalyst, Aromatic Beer, and Alternative Yeast Extract Production. BEVERAGES 2021. Abstract
Agro-industrial wastes can be valorized as biorefinery raw materials through innovative, environmentally friendly bioprocessing for added value products. In this study, a process for citrus waste valorization within the biorefinery concept is proposed, including the development of an effective biocatalyst, based on immobilized cells, for aromatic beer production, and an alternative yeast extract (AYE) production in the same unit. Specifically, orange pulp from discarded oranges was applied as an immobilization carrier of the alcohol-resistant and cryotolerant yeast strain S. cerevisiae AXAZ-1. The yeast culture was produced by minor nutrient supplementation using diluted molasses as substrate. An effective Citrus Waste Brewing Biocatalyst (CWBB) was produced and applied for beer fermentation. The aroma-related compounds in beer produced with free yeast cells or the CWBB were evaluated by solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The analysis showed that the beers produced by the CWBB had a more complex volatile profile compared with beer fermented by the free cells. More specifically, the CWBB enhanced the formation of esters and terpenes by 5- and 27-fold, respectively. In the frame of the proposed multiprocessing biorefinery concept, the spent CWBB, after it has completed its cycle of brewing batches, was used as substrate for AYE production through autolysis. The produced AYE significantly affected the yeast growth when compared to commercial yeast extract (CYE). More specifically, it promoted the biomass productivity and biomass yield factor by 60–150% and 110–170%, respectively. Thus, AYE could be successfully used for industrial cell growth as an efficient and cheaper substitute of CYE. Within a circular economy framework, the present study highlights the potential use of citrus waste to produce aromatic beer combined with AYE production as an alternative way to valorize these wastes.

Abstract
Agro-industrial residues are low-cost carbon sources (C-sources) for microbial growth and production of value-added bioproducts. Among the agro-industrial residues available, those rich in pectin are generated in high amounts worldwide from the sugar industry or the industrial processing of fruits and vegetables. Sugar beet pulp (SBP) hydrolysates contain predominantly the neutral sugars d-glucose, l-arabinose and d-galactose, and the acidic sugar d-galacturonic acid. Acetic acid is also present at significant concentrations since the d-galacturonic acid residues are acetylated. In this study, we have examined and optimized the performance of a Rhodotorula mucilaginosa strain, isolated from SBP and identified at the molecular level during this work. This study was extended to another oleaginous red yeast species, R. toruloides, envisaging the full utilization of the C-sources from SBP hydrolysate (at pH 5.0). The dual role of acetic acid as a carbon and energy source and as a growth and metabolism inhibitor was examined. Acetic acid prevented the catabolism of d-galacturonic acid and l-arabinose after the complete use of the other C-sources. However, d-glucose and acetic acid were simultaneously and efficiently metabolized, followed by d-galactose. SBP hydrolysate supplementation with amino acids was crucial to allow d-galacturonic acid and l-arabinose catabolism. SBP valorization through the production of lipids and carotenoids by Rhodotorula strains, supported by complete catabolism of the major C-sources present, looks promising for industrial implementation.
