Surface water pollution by pharmaceuticals and an alternative of removal by low-cost adsorbents: A review

Adsorptive removal of oxytetracycline hydrochloride using bagasse-based biochar powder and beads

Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride (OTC), a common antibiotic used to treat specific illnesses in humans and animals, is characterized by poor absorption into cells, low volatility, and high hydrophilicity. It is a potent contaminant that poses a serious threat to the ecosystem, particularly the aquatic sources. Adsorption onto natural adsorbents is one of the most successful, economical, and ecologically friendly ways to remove antibiotics from waste water. The present work focuses on the adsorption of OTC utilizing alginate biochar beads (AlBCB) and biochar powder (BC) derived from bagasse. The influence of several factors were studies and optimized through batch studies employing BC and AlBCB. After 50 min BC displayed a removal of 97%, at an initial concentration of 10 ppm. The experimental data was discovered to follow PFO kinetics and fit with the Freundlich isotherm adsorption model. AlBCB, after a contact time of 40 min, indicated a maximum percentage removal of 86% for initial concentration of 10 ppm OTC. Al-biochar beads showed the maximum percentage removal at pH 10. 0.5 g of adsorbent was used to carry out all batch experiments at room temperature. The adsorption fitted Freundlich adsorption isotherm and intraparticle diffusion kinetics.

Banana Peel Extract-Derived ZnO Nanopowder: Transforming Solar Water Purification for Safer Agri-Food Production

Pure water scarcity is the most significant emerging challenge of the modern society. Various organics such as pesticides (clomazone, quinmerac), pharmaceuticals (ciprofloxacin, 17α-ethynilestradiol), and mycotoxins (deoxynivalenol) can be found in the aquatic environment. The aim of this study was to fabricate ZnO nanomaterial on the basis of banana peel extract (ZnO/BPE) and investigate its efficiency in the photocatalytic degradation of selected organics under various experimental conditions. Newly synthesized ZnO/BPE nanomaterials were fully characterized by the XRD, FTIR, SEM-EPS, XPS, and BET techniques, which confirmed the successful formation of ZnO nanomaterials. The photocatalytic experiments showed that the optimal catalyst loading of ZnO/BPE was 0.5 mg/cm3, while the initial pH did not influence the degradation efficiency. The reusability of the ZnO/BPE nanomaterial was also tested, and minimal activity loss was found after three photocatalytic cycles. The photocatalytic efficiency of pure banana peel extract (BPE) was also studied, and the obtained data showed high removal of ciprofloxacin and 17α-ethynilestradiol. Finally, the influence of water from Danube River was also examined based on the degradation efficiency of selected pollutants. These results showed an enhanced removal of ciprofloxacin in water from the Danube River, while in the case of other pollutants, the treatment was less effective.

Bioelectroremediation of a Real Industrial Wastewater: The Role of Electroactive Biofilm and Planktonic Cells through Enzymatic Activities

Bioelectrochemical processes are emerging as one of the most efficient and sustainable technologies for wastewater treatment. Their application for industrial wastewater treatment is still low due to the high toxicity and difficulty of biological treatment for industrial effluents. This is especially relevant in pharmaceutical industries, where different solvents, active pharma ingredients (APIs), extreme pH, and salinity usually form a lethal cocktail for the bacterial community in bioreactors. This work evaluates the impact of the anode architecture on the detoxification performance and analyzes, for the first time, the profile of some key bioremediation enzymes (catalase and esterase) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) during the operation of microbial electrochemical cells treating real pharmaceutical wastewater. Our results show the existence of oxidative stress and loss of cell viability in planktonic cells, while the electrogenic bacteria that form the biofilm maintain their biochemical machinery intact, as observed in the bioelectrochemical response. Monitorization of electrical current flowing in the bioelectrochemical system showed how electroactive biofilm, after a short adaptation period, started to degrade the pharma effluent. The electroactive biofilms are responsible for the detoxification of this type of industrial wastewater.

Valorization and Upcycling of Acid Mine Drainage and Plastic Waste via the Preparation of Magnetic Sorbents for Adsorption of Emerging Contaminants

Plastic waste poses a serious environmental risk, but it can be recycled to produce a variety of nanomaterials for water treatment. In this study, poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) waste and acid mine drainage were used in the preparation of magnetic mesoporous carbon (MMC) nanocomposites for the adsorptive removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) from water samples. The latter were then characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and ζ potential. The results of Brunauer-Emmett-Teller isotherms revealed high specific surface areas of 404, 664, and 936 m2/g with corresponding pore sizes 2.51, 2.28, and 2.26 nm for MMC, MMAC-25%, and MMAC-50% adsorbents, respectively. Under optimized conditions, the equilibrium studies were best described by the Langmuir and Freundlich models and kinetics by the pseudo-second-order model. The maximum adsorption capacity for monolayer adsorption from the Langmuir model was 112, 102, and 106 mg/g for acetaminophen, caffeine, and carbamazepine, respectively. The composites could be reused for up to six cycles without losing their adsorption efficiency. Furthermore, prepared adsorbents were used to remove acetaminophen, caffeine, and carbamazepine from wastewater samples, and up to a 95% removal efficiency was attained.

Wastewater reuse and pharmaceutical pollution in agriculture: Uptake, transport, accumulation and metabolism of pharmaceutical pollutants within plants

The presence of pharmaceutical pollutants in water sources has become a growing concern due to its potential impacts on human health and other organisms. The physicochemical properties of pharmaceuticals based on their intended therapeutical application, which include antibiotics, hormones, analgesics, and antidepressants, is quite diverse. Their presence in wastewater, sewerage water, surface water, ground water and even in drinking water is reported by many researchers throughout the world. Human exposure to these pollutants through drinking water or consumption of aquatic and terrestrial organisms has raised concerns about potential adverse effects, such as endocrine disruption, antibiotic resistance, and developmental abnormalities. Once in the environment, they can persist, undergo transformation, or degrade, leading to a complex mixture of contaminants. Application of treated wastewater, compost, manures or biosolids in agricultural fields introduce pharmaceutical pollutants in the environment. As pharmaceuticals are diverse in nature, significant differences are observed during their uptake and accumulation in plants. While there have been extensive studies on aquatic ecosystems, the effect on agricultural land is more disparate. As of now, there are few reports available on the potential of plant uptake and transportation of pharmaceuticals within and between plant organs. This review summarizes the occurrence of pharmaceuticals in aquatic water bodies at a range of concentrations and their uptake, accumulation, and transport within plant tissues. Research gaps on pharmaceutical pollutants' specific effect on plant growth and future research scopes are highlighted. The factors affecting uptake of pharmaceuticals including hydrophobicity, ionization, physicochemical properties (pKa, logKow, pH, Henry's law constant) are discussed. Finally, metabolism of pharmaceuticals within plant cells through metabolism phase enzymes and plant responses to pharmaceuticals are reviewed.

Sustainable removal of tetracycline and paracetamol from water using magnetic activated carbon derived from pine fruit waste

This work presents highly porous magnetic activated carbon nanoparticles (MPFRC-A) derived from pine fruit residue. The MPFRC-A were produced through a three-step process: physical activation (carbonization temperature: 110-550 °C), chemical activation (H2SO4 (0.1 N, 96%)), and co-precipitation. These nanoparticles were then used to remove tetracycline (TC) and paracetamol (PC) from water. Functionalization with Fe3O4 nanoparticles on the surface of the pine fruit residue-derived activated carbon (PFRC-A) resulted in high saturation magnetization, allowing for separation from aqueous solution using an external magnet. The MPFRC-A adsorbent was characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analyses, In the experimental section, the effects of various factors on the adsorption process were investigated, including pH, contact time, initial pollutant concentrations, adsorbent dosage, and temperature. Based on these investigations, adsorption isotherm models and kinetics were studied and determined. The results showed that MPFRC-A exhibited a large specific surface area (182.5 m2/g) and a high total pore volume (0.33 cm3/g). The maximum adsorption capacity was achieved at pH 6 and 5 for PC and TC drugs with an adsorbent dose of 400 mg and an initial concentration of 20 mg/L at 25 °C. The study revealed that the experimental data were well-fitted by the Langmuir isotherm model (R2 > 0.98), with maximum uptake capacities of 43.75 mg/g for TC and 41.7 mg/g for PC. Outcomes of the adsorption thermodynamics shows non-spontaneity of the reaction and the adsorption process by all adsorbents was endothermic.

Eco-friendly synthesis of a novel adsorbent from sugarcane and high-pressure boiler water

The development of industrial process in line with the circular economy and the environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) is the foundation for sustainable economic development. Alternatives that make feasible the transformation of residues in added value products are promising and contribute to the repositioning of the industry towards sustainability, due to financial leverage obtained from lesser operational costs when compared with conventional processes, therefore increasing the company competitivity. In this study, it is presented a promising and innovative technology for the recycling of agro-industrial residues, the sugarcane bagasse and the high-pressure water boiler effluent, in the development of a low-cost adsorbent (HC-T) using the hydrothermal carbonization processes and its application in the adsorption of herbicide Diuron and Methylene Blue dye from synthetic contaminated water. The hydrothermal carbonization was performed in a Teflon contained inside a sealed stainless-steel reactor self-pressurized at 200°C, biomass-to-effluent (m/v) ratio of 1:3 and 24 h. The synthesized material (HC) was activated in an oven at 450°C for 10 min, thus being named adsorbent (HC-T) and characterized by textural, structural and spectroscopic analyses. The low-cost adsorbent HC-T presented an 11-time-fold increase in surface area and ∼40% increase in total pore volume in comparison with the HC material. The kinetic and isotherm adsorption experiment results highlighted that the HC-T was effective as a low-cost adsorbent for the removal of herbicide Diuron and Methylene Blue dye from synthetic contaminated waters, with an adsorption capacity of 35.07 (63.25% removal) and 307.09 mg g-1 (36,47% removal), respectively.

Management of ibuprofen in wastewater using electrospun nanofibers developed from PET and PS wastes

Electrospinning is a promising technique for the beneficial use and recycling of plastic waste polymers using simple methodologies. In this study, plastic bottles and Styrofoam wastes have been used to develop polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polystyrene (PS) nanofibers using electrospinning technique separately without any further purification. The effect of the concentration onto the nanofiber's morphology was studied. The fabricated nanofibers were characterized using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM), Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), N2 adsorption/desorption analysis, and water contact angle (WCA). Furthermore, the prepared nanofibers were applied for the adsorption of ibuprofen (IBU) from wastewater. Some parameters that can influence the adsorption efficiency of nanofibers such as solution pH, wt.% of prepared nanofibers, drug initial concentration, and contact time were studied and optimized. The results show that the equilibrium adsorption capacity was achieved after only 10 min for 12 wt% PET nanofibers which is equivalent to 364.83 mg/g. For 12 wt% PS nanofibers, an equilibrium adsorption capacity of 328.42 mg/g was achieved in 30 min. The experimental data was fitted to five isotherm and four kinetics models to understand the complicated interaction between the nanofibers and the drug. Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm model showed the best fit for experimental data for both PET and PS nanofibers. The adsorption process was characterized by predominantly physical reaction rather than chemical adsorption for both materials. The reusability study revealed that the synthesized nanofibers maintain their ability to adsorb/desorb IBU for up to five cycles. The results obtained demonstrated that fabricated nanofibers from plastic wastes could perform promising adsorbents for the management of IBU in wastewater. However, further research is needed for the scaling-up the fabrication which is required for real-world applications.

Zinc/Magnesium Ferrite Nanoparticles Functionalized with Silver for Optimized Photocatalytic Removal of Malachite Green

Water pollution is a major environmental challenge. Due to the inefficiency of conventional wastewater treatment plants in degrading many organic complex compounds, these recalcitrant pollutants end up in rivers, lakes, oceans and other bodies of water, affecting the environment and human health. Semiconductor photocatalysis is considered an efficient complement to conventional methods, and the use of various nanomaterials for this purpose has been widely explored, with a particular focus on improving their activity under visible light. This work focuses on developing magnetic and photoactive zinc/magnesium mixed ferrites (Zn0.5Mg0.5Fe2O4) by sol-gel and solvothermal synthesis methods, which are two of the most important and efficient methods used for the synthesis of ferrite nanoparticles. The nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized by the sol-gel method exhibited an average size of 14.7 nm, while those synthesized by the solvothermal method had an average size of 17.4 nm. Both types possessed a predominantly cubic structure and demonstrated superparamagnetic behavior, reaching a magnetization saturation value of 60.2 emu g-1. Due to the high recombination rate of electrons/holes, which is an intrinsic feature of ferrites, surface functionalization with silver was carried out to enhance charge separation. The results demonstrated a strong influence of adsorption and of the deposition of silver. Several optimization steps were performed during synthesis, allowing us to create efficient catalysts, as proved by the almost full removal of the dye malachite green attaining 95.0% (at a rate constant of 0.091 min-1) and 87.6% (at a rate constant of 0.017 min-1) using NPs obtained by the sol-gel and solvothermal methods, respectively. Adsorption in the dark accounted for 89.2% of the dye removal for nanoparticles prepared by sol-gel and 82.8% for the ones obtained by the solvothermal method. These results make mixed zinc/magnesium ferrites highly promising for potential industrial application in effluent photoremediation using visible light.

Biocomposite Material Based on Lactococcus lactis sp. Immobilized in Natural Polymer Matrix for Pharmaceutical Removal from Aqueous Media

Ecosystems are negatively impacted by pharmaceutical-contaminated water in different ways. In this work, a new biosorbent obtained by immobilizing Lactococcus lactis in a calcium alginate matrix was developed for the removal of pharmaceuticals from aqueous solutions. Ethacridine lactate (EL) was selected as the target drug. Lactococcus Lactis biomass was chosen for the biosorbent synthesis for two reasons: (i) the microbial biomass used in the food industry allows the development of a low-cost biosorbent from available and renewable materials, and (ii) there is no literature mentioning the use of Lactococcus Lactis biomass immobilized in natural polymers as a biosorbent for the removal of pharmaceuticals. The characterization of the synthesized biosorbent named 5% LLA was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Additionally, particle size and the point of zero charge were established. Batch biosorption investigations showed that using 5% LLA at an initial pH of 3.0 and a biosorbent dose of 2 g/L resulted in up to 80% EL removal efficiency for all EL initial concentrations (20-60 mg/L). Four equilibrium isotherms, given in the order of Redlich-Peterson > Freundlich > Hill > Temkin, are particularly relevant for describing the experimental data for EL biosorption on the 5% LLA biosorbent using correlation coefficient values. Kinetic parameters were determined using kinetic models such as pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, Avrami and Weber-Morris. The pseudo-second-order kinetics model provides the greatest fit among the evaluated equations, with correlation coefficients greater than 0.99. According to the study's findings, the developed biocomposite is a potentially useful material for the removal of pharmaceuticals from aqueous matrices.

Synthesis and characterization of nanocomposite based polymeric membrane (PES/PVP/GO-TiO2) and performance evaluation for the removal of various antibiotics (amoxicillin, azithromycin & ciprofloxacin) from aqueous solution

The escalating global concern regarding antibiotic pollution necessitates the development of advanced water treatment strategies. This study presents an innovative approach through the fabrication and evaluation of a Polyethersulfone (PES) membrane adorned with GO-TiO2 nanocomposites. The objective is to enhance the removal efficiency of various antibiotics, addressing the challenge of emerging organic compounds (EOCs) in water systems. The nanocomposite membranes, synthesized via the phase inversion method, incorporate hydrophilic agents, specifically GO-TiO2 nanocomposites and Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The resultant membranes underwent comprehensive characterization employing AFM, EDS, tensile strength testing, water contact angle measurements, and FESEM to elucidate their properties. Analysis revealed a substantial improvement in the hydrophilicity of the modified membranes attributed to the presence of hydroxyl groups within the GO-TiO2 structure. AFM images demonstrated an augmentation in surface roughness with increasing nanocomposite content. FESEM images unveiled structural modifications, leading to enhanced porosity and augmented water flux. The pure water flux elevated from 0.980 L/m2.h-1 for unmodified membranes to approximately 6.85 L/m2.h-1 for membranes modified with 2 wt% nanocomposites. Membrane performance analysis indicated a direct correlation between nanocomposite content and antibiotic removal efficiency, ranging from 66.52% to 89.81% with 4 wt% nanocomposite content. Furthermore, the nanocomposite-modified membrane exhibited heightened resistance to fouling. The efficacy of the membrane extended to displaying potent antibacterial properties against microbial strains, including S. aureus, E. coli, and Candida. This study underscores the immense potential of GO-TiO2 decorated PES membranes as a sustainable and efficient solution for mitigating antibiotic contamination in water systems. The utilization of nanocomposite membranes emerges as a promising technique to combat the presence of EOC pollutants, particularly antibiotics, in water bodies, thus addressing a critical environmental concern.

Efficient removal of sertraline hydrochloride from wastewater using banana peels functionalized: performance adsorption, mechanisms and applicability

The presence of sertraline hydrochloride (SER) has been detected in water bodies and wastewater, which encourages the search for alternative treatments for its control and removal. Agro-industrial residues are considered efficient adsorbents and functionalization with magnetic nanoparticles improve the adsorptive properties of these materials, in addition to facilitating their separation from a fluid by an external magnetic field. Thus, this study developed and characterized a new material via the functionalization of the banana peel with iron oxide nanoparticles (BANFunc) for the adsorption of SER in batch experiments. Physicochemical and spectroscopic techniques indicated that the BANFunc functionalization method was effective and improved the adsorption capacity (0.68 and 39.96 mg g-1 for BANPure and BANFunc, respectively). The adsorption studies revealed a maximum adsorptive capacity of 142.85 mg g-1 at 240 min and 318 K. Furthermore, the process presented spontaneous and endothermic behaviour, with a better fit to the pseudo-first-order and Langmuir models for the kinetic and isothermal, respectively. The reuse of the biosorbent was effective for five cycles, and even in the 3rd cycle, the adsorbent showed more than 80% SER removal. The adsorption process can be explained by hydrogen bonds and π-interactions. In the synthetic mixture treatment, the biosorbent demonstrated a satisfactory removal rate, of 86.91%, and individual removals of 83.23%, 89.36% and 88.15% for SER, safranine orange and chloroquine, respectively. Therefore, BANFunc is a promising material for large-scale applications, considering its sustainable character and high treatment efficiency.

Degradation and transformation of carbamazepine in aqueous medium under non-thermal plasma oxidation process

Carbamazepine (CBZ) is a pharmaceutical compound detected in various water resources. With a view to removing this contaminant, the applicability of non-thermal plasma (NTP) oxidation process has been widely tested in recent years. This study utilized NTP from a dielectric barrier discharge reactor in the treatment of CBZ. NTP on the surface of a water sample containing 25 mg.L-1 of CBZ resulted in a removal efficiency of over 90% with an energy yield of 0.19 g. (kWh)-1. On the other hand, a rapid reduction in pH and an increase of conductivity and nitrate/nitrite ions concentration were observed during the degradation. The applied voltage amplitude significantly affected the removal efficiency and the energy yield as the degradation efficiency was 55%, 70%, and 72% respectively with an applied voltage of 8, 10, and 12 kV. The water matrices containing inorganic anions such as chloride and carbonate ions reduced the removal efficiency by scavenging the reactive species. Accordingly, a reduction in the removal efficiency was observed in tap water. The high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) results revealed that both reactive oxygen and nitrogen species take part in the reaction process which yields many intermediate products including aromatic nitro-products. This study concluded that NTP can effectively degrade CBZ in both pure and tap water, but special attention must be paid to changes in the water quality parameters (pH, conductivity, and nitrate/nitrite ions) and the fate of nitro products.

Next-generation hybrid technologies for the treatment of pharmaceutical industry effluents

Water and industries are intangible units of the globe that are always set to meet the population's demand. The global population depends on one-third of freshwater increasing the demand. The increase in population along with urbanization has polluted the fresh water resources. The pharmaceutical industry is marked as an emerging contaminant of water pollution. The most common type of pharmaceutical drugs that are detected in the environment includes antibiotics, analgesics, NSAIDs, and pain-relieving drugs. These drugs alter the food chain of the organisms causing chaos mainly in the marine ecosystem. Pharmaceutical drugs are found only in shallow amounts (ng/mg) they have a huge impact on the living system. The consumption of water contaminated with pharmaceutical ingredients can disrupt reproduction, hormonal imbalance, cancer, and respiratory problems. Various methods are used to remove these chemicals from the environment. In this review, we mainly focused on the emerging hybrid technologies and their significance in the effective treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater. This review paper primarily elaborates on the merits and demerits of existing conventional technologies helpful in developing integrated technologies for the modern era of pharmaceutical effluent treatment. This review paper further in detail discusses the various strategies of eco-friendly bioremediation techniques namely biostimulation, bioaugmentation, bacterial degradation, mycoremediation, phytoremediation, and others for the ultimate removal of pharmaceutical contaminants in wastewater. The review makes clear that targeted and hybrid solutions are what the world will require in the future to get rid of these pharmacological prints.

Temperature and pH dual response flexible silica aerogel with switchable wettability for selective oil/water separation

Silica aerogels are attractive oil-absorbing agents due to their low density, high porosity. However, how to discharge the oil which adsorbed by silica aerogels is a difficult issue. To address this challenge, new separation strategies with high efficiency are needed. In this study, we prepared the temperature and pH dual response flexible silica aerogel have temperature response and pH response effect, which can change its wettability by adjusting temperature or pH. On the one hand, the temperature and pH responsive flexible silica aerogel can be used to adsorb water at the temperature below 34.73 °C or pH > 7. On the other hand, it can adsorb oil at a temperature above 34.73 °C or pH < 7. The automatic desorption of oil can be achieved without consuming additional energy and damaging the pore structure. Therefore, the sample could continuously adsorb and filtrate efficiently and realize the recovery of oil and adsorption materials.

Evaluation of hydrochar from peach stones for caffeine removal from aqueous medium and treatment of a synthetic mixture

The presence of micropollutants, such as caffeine (CAF), has been detected throughout the world, since conventional treatment plants are not able to properly degrade them. CAF is a widely consumed stimulant, and has been demanding the development of efficient methodologies for its removal. Aiming at the agriculture waste valorization, a new hydrochar was developed based on chemical and thermal modification of peach stones (mod-PS) for CAF removal from water and from a synthetic mixture. The morphology, functional groups and surface electrical charge of the adsorbent were characterized by SEM, FTIR and zeta potential, respectively. Regarding CAF adsorption performance, the equilibrium time was reached at 480 min and the pseudo-second-order model presented the best fit for the experimental data. The maximum adsorption capacity was 68.39 mg g-1 (298 K) and the Langmuir model exhibited a better fit for the isothermal data. The thermodynamic properties confirmed that the process was exothermic, spontaneous and reversible. The main adsorption mechanisms were hydrogen bonds and π-interactions. The global removal efficiency was satisfactory in the synthetic mixture simulating real wastewater (67%). Therefore, the proposed new hydrochar has potential application as a low-cost adsorbent for CAF removal.

Removal of emergent pollutants: A review on recent updates and future perspectives on polysaccharide-based composites vis-à-vis traditional adsorbents

There is a growing incidence in the presence of emergent pollutants like the pesticides and pharmaceuticals in water bodies. The matter of environmental concern is their synthetic and persistent nature which has resulted in induced toxicity/damaging effect to the vital functioning of the different organs in the aquatic community. Traditional adsorbents have exhibited limitations like low stability and minimum reuse ability. Composites of such adsorbents with polysaccharides have demonstrated distinct features like improved surface area, porosity, adsorptivity; improved reusability and structural integrity; improved mechanical strength, thermal stability when applied for the removal of the emergent pollutants. The biocompatibility and biodegradability of such fabricated composites is established; thereby making the water treatment process cost effective, sustainable and environmentally friendly. The present review has dealt with an in-depth, up-dated literature compilation of traditional as well as polysaccharide based composite adsorbents and addressed their performance evaluation for the removal of pharmaceuticals and pesticides from wastewater. A comparative study has revealed the merits of polysaccharide based composites and discussions have been made with a focus on future research directions in the related area.

Voltammetric determination of flufenamic acid and adsorption studies with biochar in the absence / presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide

In this article, a novel method for the determination of Flufenamic acid (FFA, pharmaceutical pollutant) is presented based on voltammetric oxidation at a carbon paste electrode (CPE) in-situ modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The experimentally proved "erosion effect" of this surfactant enhanced the sensitivity of detection in the SWASV mode allowing us to quantify the analyte down to the low nanomolar level (with a LOD of 5.5 × 10-9 mol L-1 FFA). The respective (electro)analytical procedure has been shown to be applicable in monitoring the residua of FFA in model aqueous solutions simulating polluted and then purified industrial wastewater. Furthermore, the process of removal of FFA via adsorption onto selected carbonaceous materials was studied in detail, when two conventional active carbon adsorbents were compared with biochar (BC) - a cheaper alternative. It has been found that although the latter as such does not attain the adsorption capacities of both active carbons, in-situ modification of BC with CTAB enhances its adsorption capacity up to 40% (from 125 mg g-1 to ca. 175 mg g-1), as well as fastens the adsorption process (3x); both under conditions of testing. When considering the final procedure for removal of residual pollutant from model water samples with BC and the method of choice for quantification of the corresponding change(s) of FFA before and after purification, the principal role of CTAB has been revealed and defined. Namely, the functioning of CTAB had, in fact, double benefit: (i) enhancement of adsorptive capabilities of the BC adsorbent and (ii) improved sensitivity of the voltammetric detection with in-situ modified CPE.

An efficient multi-functional ternary reusable nanocomposite based on chitosan@TiO2@Ag NP immobilized on cellulosic fiber as a support substrate for wastewater treatment

To effectively remove heavy metals, organic contaminants, and pathogenic bacteria from wastewater, an efficient multi-functional ternary nanocomposite based on chitosan (CS), titanium dioxide (TiO2 NP), and silver nanoparticles (Ag NP) was prepared. Different tools were used to confirm the successful synthesis of the CS/TiO2 NP/Ag NP nanocomposite. Then, the CS/TiO2 NP/Ag NPnanocomposite was immobilized on the cellulosic fiber as a support substrate for its easy removal and reuse. On a lab scale, CS/TiO2 NP/Ag NP nanocomposite@cellulosic fiber was used to remove Cu (II) ions, methyl orange (MO), and methylene blue (MB), as well as inhibit microbes. The results demonstrate that the greatest removal of Cu (II) ions was 95 % at a concentration of 50 mg/L, pH 5, a temperature of 25 °C, an agitation speed of 200 rpm with 1 g adsorbent dose, and a contact time of 150 min. The pseudo-second-order model explained the batch adsorption kinetics well, while the Langmuir model explained the adsorption isotherm well with an adsorption capacity of 7.71 mg/g. Adsorption thermodynamic parameters revealed that adsorption is a spontaneous, exothermic, increased randomness, and non-specific chemisorption approach. The photodegradation of MO and MB by CS/TiO2 NP/Ag NP nanocomposite@cellulosic fiber was investigated. The results reveal that at pH 3, the MO dye showed the highest photodegradation percentage (90 %), while the MB dye displayed the highest photodegradation percentage (94 %) at pH 11, after an irradiation time of 120 min under visible light. The rate constants for MO and MB were 0.01218 and 0.01412 min-1, respectively. The results antimicrobial activities showed that the CS/TiO2 NP/Ag NP nanocomposite@cellulosic fiber showed excellent antibacterial activity against S. aureus (95 ± 2 %) and E. coli (93 ± 3 %) as well as good antifungal activity against C. albicans (77 ± 2 %).

Synthesis of a novel functionalized biosorbent from mango stone and its application in the pharmaceutical's removal from water and a synthetic mixture

This paper explores the feasibility of functionalizing mango stones with iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MS-Fe3O4) by coprecipitation in batch adsorption processes. The synthesized material was characterized and applied in chloroquine (CQN) and sertraline hydrochloride (SER) removal from contaminated waters. The biosorbent was subjected to a regenerative study and treatment using a synthetic mixture of contaminants to evaluate its applicability in real effluents. The biosorbent was analyzed by transmission electron microscopy images, scanning electron microscopy, dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectra, and zeta potential to characterize its chemical and morphology properties. The techniques applied showed the effectiveness of the proposed modification. In the adsorption experiments, the optimal adsorbent dosage was 0.01 g for both contaminants. The pH strongly influenced the adsorption of the drugs on MS-Fe3O4, and the best results were obtained in the pH range of 5-6. Kinetic data showed a better fit to the pseudo-second-order model, and the equilibrium time was achieved in 16 h for CQN and 4 h for SER. Isotherm studies revealed maximum adsorptive capacities of 49.42 and 64.79 mg g-1, respectively, for CQN and SER, at 318 K, demonstrating that the increase in temperature is a favorable factor, and the Sips model better describes the process. The thermodynamic parameters indicate an endothermic (ΔH° >0), spontaneous (ΔG° <0), and reversible (ΔS° >0) nature of the adsorption. This process is essentially governed by physical forces, such as hydrogen and π-π bonds. However, it is also valid to consider the presence of electrostatic forces due to the ionizing nature of CQN and SER. The MS-Fe3O4 biosorbent showed good performance when evaluated in a synthetic mixture of four contaminants, with an overall removal efficiency of approximately 86% and the regenerative capacity of three reusing cycles.

Factors hindering the degradation of pharmaceuticals from human urine in an iron-activated persulfate system

This study investigated the degradation of clofibric acid (CFA), bezafibrate (BZF), and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in synthetic human urine using a novel mesoporous iron powder-activated persulfate system (mFe-PS system), and identified the factors limiting their degradation in synthetic human urine. A kinetic model was established to expose the radical production in various reaction conditions, and experiments were conducted to verify the modeling results. In the phosphate-containing mFe-PS system, the 120 min removal efficiency of CFA decreased from 95.1% to 76.6% as the phosphate concentration increased from 0.32 to 6.45 mmol/L, but recovered to 90.5% when phosphate concentration increased to 16.10 mmol/L. Meanwhile, the increased concentration of phosphate from 0.32 to 16.10 mmol/L reduced the BZF degradation efficacy from 91.5% to 79.0%, whereas SMX removal improved from 37.3% to 62.9%. The mFe-PS system containing (bi)carbonate, from 4.20 to 166.70 mmol/L, reduced CFA and BZF removal efficiencies from 100% to 76.8% and 80.4%, respectively, and SMX from 83.5% to 56.7% within a 120-min reaction time. In addition, alkaline conditions (pH ≥ 8.0) inhibited CFA and BZF degradations, while nonacidic pH (pH ≥ 7.0) remarkably inhibited SMX degradation. Results of the kinetic model indicated the formation of phosphate (H2PO4·/HPO4·-) and/or carbonate radicals (CO3·-) could limit pharmaceutical removal. The transformation products (TPs) of the pharmaceuticals revealed more incompletely oxidized TPs occurred in the phosphate- and (bi)carbonate-containing mFe-PS systems, and indicated that H2PO4·/HPO4·- mainly degraded pharmaceuticals via a benzene ring-opening reaction while CO3·- preferentially oxidized pharmaceuticals via a hydroxylation reaction.

Graphene Oxide-Polyphenylsulfone Nanocomposite Beads for Paracetamol Removal from Aqueous Solution

This study introduces a promising and practical method for the removal of paracetamol from aqueous environments, employing graphene oxide-polymer nanocomposite beads. The approach involves the utilization of a straightforward and facile phase inversion method, offering a convenient and efficient one-step process for the creation of adsorbent beads by integrating polymers and graphene oxide (GO). The synthesized nanocomposite beads are tailored for the removal of paracetamol from simulated wastewater in batch systems. Extensive characterization techniques including XPS, FTIR, SEM, TGA, and zeta potential analysis are employed to scrutinize the chemical properties and structural attributes of the prepared beads. The investigation explores the impact of critical parameters such as adsorbent dosage, adsorption duration, initial paracetamol concentration, and solution pH on the adsorption process. These nanocomposite beads exhibit an exceptional paracetamol removal efficiency, achieving up to 99% removal. This research not only contributes to the advancement of efficient and sustainable adsorbent materials for pollutant removal but also underscores their potential for environmentally friendly and cost-effective solutions in the domain of wastewater treatment.

Green surface functionalization of chitosan with spent tea waste extract for the development of an efficient adsorbent for aspirin removal

This study investigates the feasibility of spent tea waste extract (STWE) as a green modifying agent for the modification of chitosan adsorbent towards aspirin removal. Response surface methodology based on Box-Behnken design was employed to find the optimal synthesis parameters (chitosan dosage, spent tea waste concentration, and impregnation time) for aspirin removal. The results revealed that the optimum conditions for preparing chitotea with 84.65% aspirin removal were 2.89 g of chitosan, 18.95 mg/mL of STWE, and 20.72 h of impregnation time. The surface chemistry and characteristics of chitosan were successfully altered and improved by STWE, as evidenced by FESEM, EDX, BET, and FTIR analysis. The adsorption data were best fitted to pseudo 2nd order, followed by chemisorption mechanisms. The maximum adsorption capacity of chitotea was 157.24 mg/g, as fitted by Langmuir, which is impressive for a green adsorbent with a simple synthesis method. Thermodynamic studies demonstrated the endothermic nature of aspirin adsorption onto chitotea.

Modification of natural zeolite clinoptilolite and ITS application in the adsorption of herbicides

The clinoptilolite natural zeolites (NZs) posses low herbicide adsorption capacity demanding acid-, alkali-, or salt chemical modifications that enhance its adsorption. However, this may affect the material structure and charge distribution. Alternatively, zeolites may be synthesized at a high cost and time-consuming process. Consequently, new methods, such as the hydrothermal method, for NZ modification needs to be studied. In this sense, a novel surface-modified zeolite (SMZ), using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), in acid media was produced by the hydrothermal method and applied for the adsorption of Atrazine (ATZ), Diuron (DIU) and 2,4-D. Commercial NZ and SMZ were characterized by SEM, XRD, TGA, FT-IR, AA spectroscopy, pHPZC, Zeta potential and N2-physisorption. The SMZ chosen for the adsorption experiments was the one with the highest modification yield and adsorption capacity obtained from a complete design of experiments (CTAB=0.74 ; D=12 Mesh; HCl=0.1 M; t=6 h and T=205 ºC). The adsorption experiments revealed that the SMZ adsorption capacity for the herbicide 2,4-D (qmax=9.02 mg/g) was greater than that obtained for ATZ (qmax=2.11 mg/g) and DIU (qmax=1.85 mg/g), which was explained by the presence of the hydroxyl group and by geometric characteristics of the 2,4-D. Adsorption models' fitting showed that the adsorption of 2,4-D onto SMZ were best described by pseudo-second order kinetic (k2=0.005-0.006 g/mg.min; qe,exp=7.122-8.614 mg/g) and Langmuir isothermal model (KL=0.283-0.499 L/mg; qm=7.167-7.995 mg/g). These results indicate that the hydrothermal method is a viable alternative to enable the use of NZs for the adsorption of emerging contaminants from wastewater.

Emerging applications of biochar: A review on techno-environmental-economic aspects

Biomass fast pyrolysis produces bio-oil and biochar achieving circular economy. This review explored the emerging applications of biochar. Biochar possesses the unique properties for removing emerging contaminants and for mine remediation, owing to its negative charge surface, high specific surface area, large pore size distribution and surface functional groups. Additionally, biochar could adsorb impurities such as CO2, moisture, and H2S to upgrade the biogas. Customizing pyrolysis treatments, optimizing the feedstock and pyrolysis operating conditions enhance biochar production and improve its surface properties for the emerging applications. Life cycle assessment and techno-economic assessment indicated the benefits of replacing conventional activated carbon with biochar.

Pharmaceutically active compounds in aqueous environment: recent developments in their fate, occurrence and elimination for efficient water purification

The existence of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in the water is a major concern for environmentalists due to their deleterious effects on living organisms even at minuscule concentrations. This review focuses on PhACs such as analgesics and anti-inflammatory compounds, which are massively excreted in urine and account for the majority of pharmaceutical pollution. Furthermore, other PhACs such as anti-epileptics, beta-blockers and antibiotics are discussed because they also contribute significantly to pharmaceutical pollution in the aquatic environment. This review is divided into two parts. In the first part, different classes of PhACs and their fate in the wastewater environment are presented. In the second part, recent advances in the removal of PhACs by conventional wastewater treatment plants, including membrane bioreactors (MBRs), activated carbon adsorption and bench-scale studies concerning a broad range of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) that render practical and appropriate strategies for the complete mineralization and degradation of pharmaceutical drugs, are reviewed. This review indicates that drugs like diclofenac, naproxen, paracetamol and aspirin are removed efficiently by conventional systems. Activated carbon adsorption is suitable for the removal of diclofenac and carbamazepine, whereas AOPs are leading water treatment strategies for the effective removal of reviewed PhACs.

Graphene derivatives-based electrodes for the electrochemical determination of carbamate pesticides in food products: A review

Graphene (GR) composites have great potential for the determination of carbamates pesticides (CPs) by electrochemical methods. Since the beginning of the 20th century, GR has shown remarkable promise as electrode material for various sensors. The contamination of food products with harmful CPs is a major problem as they do not always damage human health immediately, but can be harmful after prolonged exposure. A range of advantages can be gained from their electrochemical determination, such as high sensitivity, reasonably selectivity, rapid detection, low limit of detection, and easy electrode fabrication. Furthermore, these electrochemical techniques are robust, reproducible, user-friendly, and conform to both "green" and "white" analytical chemistry. This review is focused on results published in the last ten years in the field of electrochemical determination of CPs in food products using GR and its derivatives.

Application of conventional and emerging low-cost adsorbents as sustainable materials for removal of contaminants from water

The impact of water pollution has led to the search for cost-effective and environmentally friendly treatment processes to alleviate the associated environmental hazards. Adsorption is identified as an advanced treatment technology that offers simplicity and cheap alternatives to water treatment technologies when low-cost adsorbents such as industrial by-products, waste, and agricultural waste are utilized. The utilization of these materials as low-cost adsorbents for the treatment of drinking water will bring them some value. Several practices have been done to improve the removal efficiencies of the low-cost adsorbents in order to achieve WHO standards of drinking water quality. The paper highlights some of the synthesis routes employed for the modification of low-cost adsorbents. This updated review provides information on the different applications of low-cost adsorbents in removing pollutants and their adsorption capacities in an attempt to deploy the recent sustainable low-cost adsorbents with high removal efficiencies for water treatment. Future research should focus on the fabrication of hybrid low-cost adsorbents with multifunctional and antimicrobial properties. In addition, life cycle assessment (LCA) should be conducted to reveal the environmental burdens associated with the modification of the low-cost adsorbent to improve their removal efficiencies.

Adsorption of chloroquine, propranolol, and metformin in aqueous solutions using magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposite

The work proposes the application of a nanocomposite formed by graphene oxide and magnetite to remove chloroquine, propranolol, and metformin from water. Tests related to adsorption kinetics, equilibrium isotherms and adsorbent reuse were studied, and optimization parameters related to the initial pH of the solution and the adsorbent dosage were defined. For all pharmaceuticals, adsorption tests indicated that removal efficiency was independent of initial pH at adsorbent dosages of 0.4 g L-1 for chloroquine, 1.2 g L-1 for propranolol, and 1.6 g L-1 for metformin. Adsorption equilibrium was reached within the first few minutes, and the pseudo-second-order model represented the experimental data well. While the equilibrium data fit the Sips isotherm model at 298 K, the predicted maximum adsorption capacities for chloroquine, propranolol, and metformin were 44.01, 16.82, and 12.23 mg g-1, respectively. The magnetic nanocomposite can be reused for three consecutive cycles of adsorption-desorption for all pharmaceuticals, being a promising alternative for the removal of different classes of pharmaceuticals in water.

The use of agro-waste-based adsorbents as sustainable, renewable, and low-cost alternatives for the removal of ibuprofen and carbamazepine from water

The occurrence of residual pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment poses major toxicological impacts and adds to the increasing pressure on water resources. Many countries are already suffering from water scarcity, and with the burdening costs of water and wastewater treatment, the race towards innovative sustainable strategies for pharmaceutical remediation is ongoing. Out of the available treatment methods, adsorption proved to be a promising, environmentally friendly technique, particularly when efficient waste-based adsorbents are produced from agricultural residues, thus maximizing the value of wastes, minimizing production costs, and saving natural resources from depletion. Among the residual pharmaceuticals, ibuprofen and carbamazepine are heavily consumed and highly occurring in the environment. This paper aims to review the most recent literature on the application of agro-waste-based adsorbents as sustainable alternatives for the removal of ibuprofen and carbamazepine from contaminated waters. Highlights on the major mechanisms implicated in the adsorption of ibuprofen and carbamazepine are presented, and light is shed on multiple operational parameters that hold a key role in the adsorption process. This review also highlights the effects of different production parameters on adsorption efficiency and discusses many limitations currently encountered. Finally, an analysis is included to compare the efficiency of agro-waste-based adsorbents relative to other green and synthetic adsorbents.

Influence of hydrothermal carbonization conditions on the porosity, functionality, and sorption properties of microalgae hydrochars

Green microalgae is a possible feedstock for the production of biofuels, chemicals, food/feed, and medical products. Large-scale microalgae production requires large quantities of water and nutrients, directing the attention to wastewater as a cultivation medium. Wastewater-cultivated microalgae could via wet thermochemical conversion be valorised into products for e.g., water treatment. In this study, hydrothermal carbonization was used to process microalgae polycultures grown in municipal wastewater. The objective was to perform a systematic examination of how carbonization temperature, residence time, and initial pH affected solid yield, composition, and properties. Carbonization temperature, time and initial pH all had statistically significant effects on hydrochar properties, with temperature having the most pronounced effect; the surface area increased from 8.5 to 43.6 m2 g-1 as temperature was increased from 180 to 260 °C. However, hydrochars produced at low temperature and initially neutral pH generally had the highest capacity for methylene blue adsorption. DRIFTS analysis of the hydrochar revealed that the pH conditions changed the functional group composition, implying that adsorption was electrostatic interactions driven. This study concludes that un-activated hydrochars from wastewater grown microalgae produced at relatively low hydrothermal carbonization temperatures adsorb methylene blue, despite having low surface area.

Ganoderma resinaceum and Perenniporia fraxinea: Two Promising Wood Decay Fungi for Pharmaceutical Degradation

Wood decay fungi (WDF) are a well-known source of enzymes and metabolites which have applications in numerous fields, including myco-remediation. Pharmaceuticals are becoming more problematic as environmental water pollutants due to their widespread use. In this study, Bjerkandera adusta, Ganoderma resinaceum, Perenniporia fraxinea, Perenniporia meridionalis and Trametes gibbosa were chosen from WDF strains maintained in MicUNIPV (the fungal research collection of the University of Pavia) to test their potential to degrade pharmaceuticals. The degradation potential was tested in spiked culture medium on diclofenac, paracetamol and ketoprofen, three of the most common pharmaceuticals, and irbesartan, a particularly difficult molecule to degrade. G. resinaceum and P. fraxinea were found to be the most effective at degradation, achieving 38% and 52% (24 h) and 72% and 49% (7 d) degradations of diclofenac, 25% and 73% (24 h) and 100% (7 d) degradations of paracetamol and 19% and 31% (24 h) and 64% and 67% (7 d) degradations of ketoprofen, respectively. Irbesartan was not affected by fungal activity. The two most active fungi, G. resinaceum and P. fraxinea, were tested in a second experiment in discharge wastewater collected from two different wastewater treatment plants in northern Italy. A high degradation was found in azithromycin, clarithromycin and sulfametoxazole (from 70% up to 100% in 7 days).

Effective removal of selected pharmaceuticals from sewerage treatment plant effluent using natural clay (Na-montmorillonite)

The consumption of pharmaceuticals has rapidly increased on a global scale due to the serious increase in Covid-19, influenza and respiratuar sinsityal virus, which is called "triple epidemic" in the world. The use of non-prescription analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs (AAIDs), especially paracetamol, is higher compared to pre-pandemic. This increased the AAIDs load discharged to the aqueous media through sewerage treatment plant (STP). Therefore, simple and effective treatment options for removing AAIDs from STP effluents are needed. The aim of the study was to remove AAIDs (paracetamol, acetylsalicylic acid, codeine, diclofenac, ibuprofen, indomethacin, ketoprofen, mefenamic acid, naproxen, and phenylbutazone) from STP effluents by nearly pure natural clay Na-montmorillonite. The Na-montmorillonite taken from the Ordu region in the northern part of Turkey. Surface area of the Na-montmorillonite is 99.58 m2/g and CEC is 92.40 meq/100 g. The removal efficiencies of AAIDs using Na-montmorillonite were between 82 ± 5% (ibuprofen) and 94 ± 4% (naproxen). Paracetamol was used as a model compound in kinetic and isotherm model studies. Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo second order kinetic model were the best-fit using the obtained experimental data. Film diffusion governed its rate mechanism. The paracetamol adsorption capacity was acquired as 244 mg/g at 120 min contact time at pH 6.5 at 25 °C. With this study, it could be shown that montmorillonite can be used effectively to eliminate paracetamol from STP effluent. Natural clay can be used as a simple, inexpensive and effective adsorbent for removing AAIDs from STP effluents.

Controllable synthesis of copper-organic frameworks via ligand adjustment for enhanced photo-Fenton-like catalysis

The efficient heterogeneous photo-Fenton-like catalysts based on two secondary ligand-induced Cu(II) metal-organic frameworks (Cu-MOF-1 and Cu-MOF-2) were constructed for the first time and investigated for the degradation of multiple antibiotics. Herein, two novel Cu-MOFs were prepared using mixed ligands by a facile hydrothermal method. The one-dimensional (1D) nanotube-like structure could be obtained by using V-shaped, long and rigid 4,4'-bis(3-pyridylformamide)diphenylether (3-padpe) ligand in Cu-MOF-1, while polynuclear Cu cluster could be prepared more easily by using short and small isonicotinic acid (HIA) ligand in Cu-MOF-2. Their photocatalytic performances were measured by degradation of multiple antibiotics in Fenton-like system. Comparatively, Cu-MOF-2 exhibited superior photo-Fenton-like performance under visible light irradiation. The outstanding catalytic performance of Cu-MOF-2 was ascribed to the tetranuclear Cu cluster configuration and excellent ability of photoinduced charge transfer and hole separation thus improved the photo-Fenton activity. In addition, Cu-MOF-2 showed high photo-Fenton activity in wide pH working range 3-10 and maintained wonderful stability after five cyclic experiments. The degradation intermediates and pathways were deeply studied. The main active species h⁺, O₂^- and OH worked together in photo-Fenton-like system and possible degradation mechanism was proposed. This study provided a new approach to design the Cu-based MOFs Fenton-like catalysts.

Trends in removal of pharmaceuticals in contaminated water using waste coffee and tea-based materials with their derivatives

The introduction of large amounts of pharmaceuticals into the environmental waters is well-documented in literature with their occurrence reported in all different water matrices accessible to humans and animals. At the same time, the increasing consumption of coffee and tea-based beverages results in the generation of solid waste, which is mostly disposed-off in the environment. To minimize environmental pollution, coffee and tea-based materials have been proposed as suitable options to remove pharmaceuticals in environmental waters. Therefore, this article provides a critical review on the preparation and applications of coffee and tea-based materials in removing pharmaceuticals from contaminated water. In this context, most studies in literature focused on the applications of these materials as adsorbents, while only limited work on their role in degradation of pharmaceuticals is discussed. The successful application in adsorption studies is attributed to high surface areas of adsorbents and the ability to easily modify the adsorbent surfaces by incorporating functional groups that provide additional oxygen atoms, which promote easy interactions with pharmaceuticals. Hence, the adsorption mechanisms are mostly described by hydrogen bonding, electrostatic and π-π interactions with sample pH playing a dominant role in the adsorption process. Overall, the present article focused on the developments, trends and future research direction on the preparations and applications of coffee and tea-based materials for efficient removal of pharmaceuticals in water. Fitorremediación de cinco productos farmaceúticos registrados como contaminantes emergentes en medio acuoso empleando la especie Jacinto de Agua (Eichhornia crassipes)

La contaminación de los sistemas acuáticos de agua dulce constituye un problema ambiental recurrente en el ámbito mundial, que se agudiza cada vez más con la presencia frecuente de nuevos compuestos químicos, tal es el caso de los contaminantes emergentes, dentro de los cuales se incluyen los productos farmacéuticos. El objetivo de esta investigación fue estimar la capacidad de la especie jacinto de agua (Eichhornia crassipes) para remover del medio acuoso cinco fármacos altamente recetados y de venta libre como ciprofloxacina, ibuprofeno, sulfametaxazol, diclofenaco y acetaminofén. El trabajo se llevó a cabo en condiciones de invernadero a una temperatura de 25 0C y a un pH de 6,5; con una toma de muestras cada 24 h a diferentes concentraciones (3, 6, 9,12) mg/L. Para el análisis de las muestras se utilizó Espectrofotometría UV-VIS con lectura directa de las absorbancias de cada uno de los fármacos. Se empleó la metodología de superficies de respuesta para el análisis estadístico de los datos, lo que permitió determinar los modelos para establecer tiempos y concentraciones óptimas maximizando la absorción de cada producto farmacéutico, así como obtener las pendientes de crecimiento para definir hacia donde se puede proyectar el óptimo. Los principales resultados en este estudio indican que E. crassipes removió 95% de diclofenaco en soluciones acuosas con una concentración de 3 mg/L en un tiempo de 24 h, seguido de ciprofloxacina y acetaminofén con una remoción máxima de 91,18% y 71% a las 96 h, respectivamente. Mientras que los más bajos porcentajes de remoción se obtuvo para ibuprofeno y sulfametaxazol con 57,56% y 36%, respectivamente. En el presente estudio, se comprobó la alta capacidad de remoción E. crassipes de los cinco productos farmacéuticos en condiciones controladas, evidenciando una gran posibilidad de aplicación en el campo de la fitorremediación de contaminantes emergentes en medio acuoso, lo cual constituye un importante aporte en este ámbito de la investigación. Environmentally Benign Nanoparticles for the Photocatalytic Degradation of Pharmaceutical Drugs

A rapid rise in industrialization has led to the release of pharmaceutical pollutants into water bodies, rendering water inappropriate for consumption by humans and animals, challenging our efforts to achieve the clean water sustainable development goal. These pharmaceutical pollutants include antibiotics, anticancer drugs, antidepressants, etc., which are highly stable and persistent in water, in addition to being harmful to life. At times, the secondary pollutant that is formed after degradation is more potent than the parent drug. Conventional water purification methods cannot completely remove these pollutants. Hence, efficient and robust methods are required to degrade pharmaceutical waste. Photocatalytic degradation of drugs is deemed an efficient and effective method for environmental remediation, along with recovery of photocatalysts, which are important for recycling and sustainable use. Herein, we present the synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) and their application for photocatalytic degradation of pharmaceutical waste as a preferred water treatment method. Additionally, green synthesis of photocatalytic nanomaterials offers the benefit of avoiding secondary pollution. The green synthesis of NPs is employed by using plant extracts that offer a number of metabolites as reducing agents or capping agents, as well as the use of microbes as green nanofactories to tackle the issue of water cleanliness with respect to pharmaceutical waste. Despite regulations concerning drug disposal, some underdeveloped countries do not enforce and practice these guidelines in letter and spirit. Hence, the current work presenting a promising water cleanliness method is expected to contribute to the assurance of strict policy compliance and enforcement, resulting in the resolution of the health concerns with respect to hazardous pharmaceutical waste disposal in water bodies.

Occurrence, potential sources, and risk assessment of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in atmospheric particulate matter in Hanoi, Vietnam

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PCPPs) were recently recognized as emerging pollutants due to their potential for adverse health and environmental impacts. One potential route of exposure, atmospheric particulate matter (APM), for polar PPCP chemicals has to date received limited attention. This study screened for 190 polar PPCP chemicals in outdoor APM samples collected from two locations in Hanoi, Vietnam, and predictions of source and potential effects on human health are presented. Day and night, as well as dry and rainy seasonal samples, were taken, and samples screened by LC-TOF, using sequential window acquisition and all theoretical fragment ion spectra method. Eleven PPCP chemicals were detected above the LOD and in more than one sample. The ∑11PPCP chemicals ranged from 0.61 to 21.9 ng m^-3 (median 2.07 ng m^-3), with between 2 and 6 compounds identified in individual samples (median 4). The ∑11PPCP chemicals collected near a heavy traffic area was greater than that in a populated residential zone. Night concentrations were significantly greater than day in both dry and rainy seasons (p < 0.05). Butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, benzophenone-3, acetaminophen, cotinine, and fluorescent brightener 71 were detected in > 50% of samples. These are typically found in sunscreens, cosmetics, antipyretics, tobacco, and dyes. The DI_air, hazard quotient (HQ), and hazard index (HI) for adults and children at sampling sites were estimated. The HQ for both adults and children were orders of magnitude less than the risk or were close to or whichever. APM does appear to be a potential additional secondary exposure source of PPCP chemicals to the environment and more work is needed to identify if sources are local or ubiquitous and if there is a greater health risk.

Current research trends on emerging contaminants pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs): A comprehensive review

Pharmaceutical and personnel care products (PPCPs) from wastewater are a potential hazard to the human health and wildlife, and their occurrence in wastewater has caught the concern of researchers recently. To deal with PPCPs, various treatment technologies have been evolved such as physical, biological, and chemical methods. Nevertheless, modern and efficient techniques such as advance oxidation processes (AOPs) demand expensive chemicals and energy, which ultimately leads to a high treatment cost. Therefore, integration of chemical techniques with biological processes has been recently suggested to decrease the expenses. Furthermore, combining ozonation with activated carbon (AC) can significantly enhance the removal efficiency. There are some other emerging technologies of lower operational cost like photo-Fenton method and solar radiation-based methods as well as constructed wetland, which are promising. However, feasibility and practicality in pilot-scale have not been estimated for most of these advanced treatment technologies. In this context, the present review work explores the treatment of emerging PPCPs in wastewater, via available conventional, non-conventional, and integrated technologies. Furthermore, this work focused on the state-of-art technologies via an extensive literature search, highlights the limitations and challenges of the prevailing commercial technologies. Finally, this work provides a brief discussion and offers future research directions on technologies needed for treatment of wastewater containing PPCPs, accompanied by techno-economic feasibility assessment.

Transformation of macrolide antibiotics during chlorination process: Kinetics, degradation products, and comprehensive toxicity evaluation

Antibiotics are ubiquitous in wastewater and surface water and their presence is of grave concern. Chlorination, an important disinfection process used in wastewater treatment plants and waterworks, causes antibiotics to be degraded. However, interactions of antibiotics with chlorine result in the generation of multiple transformation products (TPs). TPs may be more toxic than the parent compounds, but their structures, yields and ecotoxicity remain to be ascertained in most cases. This study examined the degradation by chlorine of two typical macrolide (MLs) antibiotics, erythromycin (ERY) and roxithromycin (ROX), and identified the TPs formed as a result of ERY and ROX chlorination. The ecotoxicity of ERY, ROX and their TPs was evaluated using a combination of bioassay and ECOSAR prediction. The degradation of ERY and ROX followed pseudo-first-order kinetic at the molar ratio of FAC to MLs of 10:1, and the degradation kinetic rate depends on pH values. Six TPs of ERY including three chlorinated TPs, and six TPs of ROX including two chlorinated TPs were identified. The tertiary N of the desosamine moiety of ERY and ROX was determined to be the main reactive site. Demethylation and chlorine substitution at the reactive site are the main degradation pathways of ERY and ROX. ECOSAR results showed that the chlorinated byproducts of ERY TP578, TP542 and TP528, and the reduced hydroxylation products of ROX TP851 exhibited higher ecotoxicity than their parent compounds. However, algae growth inhibition assays indicated that the overall ecotoxicity of the chlorinated ERY or ROX mixture was lower than that of ERY or ROX prior to chlorination. This may be attributed to the removal of the parent compound and lower yields of toxic substances. While the yields of the toxic TPs may be low, their accumulation and combined effects of the TPs and other co-occurring pollutants should be examined further.

g-C3N4 as Photocatalyst for the Removal of Metronidazole Antibiotic from Aqueous Matrices under Lab and Pilot Scale Conditions

The presence of pharmaceuticals in water is a problem of utmost importance due to the various adverse effects that these compounds may have on aquatic organisms and also humans. Since conventional wastewater treatment plants fail to efficiently remove many of these compounds, new techniques such as heterogeneous photocatalysis have been developed that are capable of degrading them. In this study, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was used as photocatalyst to remove metronidazole (MTZ), which is a widely prescribed antibiotic that has been reported as a potential carcinogen. The experiments were performed under lab and pilot scale conditions. During the lab scale experiments, 90.6% of the initial pharmaceutical concentration was removed after 360 min of irradiation and its removal followed a pseudo first order kinetic model with a degradation rate constant of k = 0.00618 min−1. Moreover, scavenging studies indicated that the indirectly produced hydroxy radicals contribute very little to the degradation mechanism. Through high precision mass spectrometry techniques, eight transformation products (TPs) were identified, and possible transformation pathways were suggested. Similarly, in the case of pilot scale experiments, 100 and 200 mg L−1 of g-C3N4 were used and the antibiotic’s removal also followed pseudo first order kinetics with k = 0.00827 min−1 and k = 0.00942 min−1, respectively. However, starting from low level inherent concentrations, only two TPs were identified. By using in silico tools (ECOSAR and T.E.S.T.), various ecotoxicological values were predicted for the TPs, which were generally found to be less toxic than the parent compound and with lower mutagenic and bioaccumulative potential. Moreover, the monitoring of the ecotoxicity with the in vitro Microtox bioassay showed that at the end of all the photocatalytic processes, the toxicity was reduced. In conclusion, this technique could have the potential to remove MTZ and other similar pharmaceuticals in full-scale applications. However, for this to happen with the highest possible efficiency, further studies must be conducted, focusing on improving the catalyst’s performance and reusability, improving the separation of catalyst as well as finding the optimum conditions for this process.

An efficient removal approach for degradation of metformin from aqueous solutions with sulfate radicals

Metformin consumption for diabetes treatment is increasing, leading to its presence in wastewater treatment plants where conventional methods cannot remove it. Therefore, this work aims to analyze the performance of advanced oxidation processes using sulfate radicals in the degradation of metformin from water. Experiments were performed in a photoreactor provided with a low-pressure Hg lamp, using K₂S₂O₈ as oxidant and varying the initial metformin concentration (C_A0), oxidant concentration (C_ox), temperature (T), and pH in a response surface experimental design. The degradation percentages ranged from 26.1 to 87.3%, while the mineralization percentages varied between 15.1 and 64%. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the output variables were more significantly affected by C_A0, C_ox, and T. Besides, a reduction of C_A0 and an increase of C_ox up to 5000 μM maximizes the metformin degradation since the generation of radicals and their interaction with metformin molecules are favored. For the greatest degradation percentage, the first order apparent rate constant achieved was 0.084 min^-1. Furthermore, while in acidic pH, temperature benefits metformin degradation, an opposite behavior is obtained in a basic medium because of recombination and inhibition reactions. Moreover, three degradation pathways were suggested based on the six products detected by HPLC-MS: N-cyanoguanidine m/z = 85; N,N-dimethylurea m/z = 89; N,N-dimethyl-cyanamide m/z = 71 N,N-dimethyl-formamide m/z = 74; glicolonitrilo m/z = 58; and guanidine m/z = 60. Finally, it was shown that in general the toxicity of the degradation byproducts was lower than the toxicity of metformin toward Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

Core-shell magnetic CFO@COF composites toward peroxymonosulfate activation for degradation of sulfamethoxazole from aqueous solution: A comparative study and mechanistic consideration

A core-shell covalent organic framework encapsulated Co1.2Fe1.8O4 magnetic particles (CFO@COF) was designed and prepared successfully to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. It displays amazing catalytic reactivity since the unique interior structure and synergistic effect between COF shell and CFO core, reaching 99.8% removal of SMX (10 mg/L) within 30 min and 90.8% TOC removal. The synergy between bimetals vests high reactivity to CFO core. And the outer COF shell can stabilize the CFO core under intricate reaction conditions to restrain the leaching of Co ions (decreased from 0.75 to 0.25 mg/L). Further investigation compared the activation mechanism in two different system, CFO/PMS system and CFO@COF/PMS system. The result showed that the radical mechanism controlled by SO4⋅- guided the SMX degradation in CFO/PMS system whereas the 1O2 played a pivotal role in CFO@COF/PMS system called non-radical leading. The influences of various factors on degradation experiments and SMX degradation pathway were also studied. Most importantly, risk assessment in CFO@COF/PMS/SMX system was estimated via "ecological structure activity relationships". In most case, the toxicities of intermediates were lower than the initial samples, which confirmed the effectiveness of CFO@COF/PMS/SMX system in the reduction of toxicity of SMX.

Impacts of wastewater effluents and seasonal trends on levels of antipsychotic pharmaceuticals in water and sediments from two cold-region rivers

Most pharmaceuticals are found at trace concentrations in aquatic systems, but their continuous release and potential accumulation can lead to adverse health effects in exposed organisms. Concentrations can vary temporally, driven by variations in discharges of receiving waters, sorption to sediments, and other biotic and abiotic exchange processes. The principal aim of this research was to better understand the occurrence, trends, and dynamics of pharmaceuticals in a cold-climate, riverine environment. To this end, a suite of seven representative antipsychotic pharmaceuticals was measured upstream and downstream of two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Saskatchewan, Canada, located in the South Saskatchewan River and Wascana Creek, respectively, across three seasons. Concentrations of analytes were in the ng/L range and generally greater downstream of both WWTPs compared to upstream. Some compounds, including the tricyclic antidepressant amitriptyline, which was the most abundant analyte in water and sediment from both sites and across seasons, reached low μg/L concentrations. Data collected from this research effort indicate contamination with antipsychotic pharmaceuticals, with the potential to adversely impact exposed organisms.

Enhanced degradation of sulfamethoxazole by non-radical-dominated peroxymonosulfate activation with Co/Zn co-doped carbonaceous catalyst: Synergy between Co and Zn

Bimetallic catalysts are often used for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation in recent years due to the synergistic effects between two different metal species. However, the synergy between Zn and other transition metal in PMS activation are rarely studied because of the ease of evaporation of Zn species at high temperature. In this work, a Co/Zn co-doped carbonaceous catalyst derived from ZIF-67@ZIF-8 (Z67@8D) was prepared successfully by the core-shell replacement strategy, and used to activate PMS for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. Due to the co-existence of Co/Zn species (e.g., Co/Zn-N site), Z67@8D showed a much higher catalytic activity than that of Z8D, Z67D, and several commercial oxides. Importantly, the CoZn synergy was deeply revealed by combining experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, in which Zn could adjust the electron distribution of Co, reducing the PMS adsorption energy and thus enhancing PMS decomposition and singlet oxygen (¹O₂) formation. Moreover, formed ZnO and graphitic structure of Z67@8D could also promote the catalytic activity. In addition, the good stability and reusability, universal applicability, and high environmental robustness of Z67@8D were demonstrated. Our findings may provide a new insight into the Zn-based bimetallic catalysts for PMS activation and pollutant degradation.

Rhodococcus: A promising genus of actinomycetes for the bioremediation of organic and inorganic contaminants

Rhodococcus is a genus of actinomycetes that has been explored by the scientific community for different purposes, especially for bioremediation uses. However, the mechanisms governing Rhodococcus-mediated bioremediation processes are far from being fully elucidated. In this sense, this work aimed to compile the recent advances in the use of Rhodococcus for the bioremediation of organic and inorganic contaminants present in different environmental compartments. We reviewed the bioremediation capacity and mechanisms of Rhodococcus spp. in the treatment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phenolic substances, emerging contaminants, heavy metals, and dyes given their human health risks and environmental concern. Different bioremediation techniques were discussed, including experimental conditions, treatment efficiencies, mechanisms, and degradation pathways. The use of Rhodococcus strains in the bioremediation of several compounds is a promising approach due to their features, primarily the presence of appropriate enzyme systems, which result in high decontamination efficiencies; but that vary according to experimental conditions. Besides, the genus Rhodococcus contains a small number of opportunistic species and pathogens, representing an advantage from the point of view of safety. Advances in analytical detection techniques and Molecular Biology have been collaborating to improve the understanding of the mechanisms and pathways involved in bioremediation processes. In the context of using Rhodococcus spp. as bioremediation agents, there is a need for more studies that 1) evaluate the role of these actinomycetes on a pilot and field scale; 2) use genetic engineering tools and consortia with other microorganisms to improve the bioremediation efficiency; and 3) isolate new Rhodococcus strains from environments with extreme and/or contaminated conditions aiming to explore their adaptive capabilities for bioremediation purposes.

Thiadiazole-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks with a Donor-Acceptor Structure: Modulating Intermolecular Charge Transfer for Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Typical Emerging Contaminants

As novel metal-free photocatalysts, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have great potential to decontaminate pollutants in water. Fast charge recombination in COFs yet inhibits their photocatalytic performance. We found that the intramolecular charge transfer within COFs could be modulated via constructing a donor-acceptor (D-A) structure, leading to the improved photocatalytic performance of COFs toward pollutant degradation. By integrating electron donor units (1,3,4-thiadiazole or 1,2,4-thiadiazole ring) and electron acceptor units (quinone), two COFs (COF-TD1 and COF-TD2) with robust D-A characteristics were fabricated as visible-light-driven photocatalysts to decontaminate paracetamol. With the readily excited electrons in 1,3,4-thiadiazole rings, COF-TD1 exhibited efficient electron-hole separation through a push-pull electronic effect, resulting in superior paracetamol photodegradation performance (>98% degradation in 60 min) than COF-TD2 (∼60% degradation within 120 min). COF-TD1 could efficiently photodegrade paracetamol in complicated water matrices even in river water, lake water, and sewage wastewater. Diclofenac, bisphenol A, naproxen, and tetracycline hydrochloride were also effectively degraded by COF-TD1. Efficient photodegradation of paracetamol in a scaled-up reactor could be achieved either by COF-TD1 in a powder form or that immobilized onto a glass slide (to further ease recovery and reuse) under natural sunlight irradiation. Overall, this study provided an effective strategy for designing excellent COF-based photocatalysts to degrade emerging contaminants.

Unravelling the emerging carcinogenic contaminants from industrial waste water for prospective remediation by electrocoagulation - A review

The need of the hour relies on finding new but sustainable ways to curb rising pollution levels. The accelerated levels of urbanization and increase in population deplete the finite resources essential for human sustenance. In this aspect, water is one of the non-renewable sources that is running out very fast and is polluted drastically day by day. One way of tackling the problem is to reduce the pollution levels by decreasing the usage of chemicals in the process, and the other is to find ways to reuse or reduce the contaminants in the effluent by treatment methods. Most of the available water recycling or treatment methods are not sustainable. Some of them even use toxic chemicals in the processing steps. Treatment of organic wastes from industries is a challenging task as they are hard to remove. Electrocoagulation is one of the emerging water treatment technologies that is highly sustainable and has a comparatively cheaper operating cost. Being a broad-spectrum treatment process, it is suitable for treating the most common water pollutants ranging from oils, bacteria, heavy metals, and others. The process is also straightforward, where electrical current is used to coagulate the contaminates. The presence of carcinogens in these waste water increases the need for its treatment towards further use. The present investigation is made as an extensive analysis of the emerging carcinogens and their various sources from process industries, especially in the form of organic waste and their removal by electrocoagulation and its coupled techniques. The paper also aims to ascertain why the electrocoagulation technique may be a better alternative compared with other methods for the removal of carcinogens in organic wastewater, an analysis which has not been explored before.
