Occurrence of PPCPs in a Brazilian water reservoir and their removal efficiency by ecological filtration

The influence of light intensities and micropollutants on the removal of total coliforms and E. coli from wastewater in a flat-panel photobioreactor

The presence of micropollutants and pathogens in sanitary wastewater and surface water is a growing concern that impacts public health, environmental balance and the maintenance of water supply services. To improve sanitary wastewater treatment, it is necessary to develop and improve sustainable technologies. Among the available options, microalgae-based systems stand out for their efficiency and generation of value-added byproducts. To study the impact of luminosity and the presence of micropollutants (13 selected) on the removal of E. coli and total coliforms from real anaerobically treated wastewater, a pilot flat-panel photobioreactor (50 L) was operated in batch mode in a tropical climate region. This is the first study to evaluate whether micropollutants interfere with coliform groups, considering a microalgae-based system and an experiment in a tropical climate region. E. coli had better removal (from 104 to 101 CFU 100 mL-1) than did total coliforms (from 104 to 103 CFU 100 mL-1). The removal of E. coli was more strongly linked to luminosity and temperature, while the removal of total coliforms was influenced by the presence of the selected micropollutants.

Occurrence, bioaccumulation, fate, and risk assessment of emerging pollutants in aquatic environments: A review

Significant concerns on a global scale have been raised in response to the potential adverse impacts of emerging pollutants (EPs) on aquatic creatures. We have carefully reviewed relevant research over the past 10 years. The study focuses on five typical EPs: pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), drinking water disinfection byproducts (DBPs), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), and microplastics (MPs). The presence of EPs in the global aquatic environment is source-dependent, with wastewater treatment plants being the main source of EPs. Multiple studies have consistently shown that the final destination of most EPs in the water environment is sludge and sediment. Simultaneously, a number of EPs, such as PFASs, MPs, and BFRs, have long-term environmental transport potential. Some EPs exhibit notable tendencies towards bioaccumulation and biomagnification, while others pose challenges in terms of their degradation within both biological and abiotic treatment processes. The results showed that, in most cases, the ecological risk of EPs in aquatic environments was low, possibly due to potential dilution and degradation. Future research topics should include adding EPs detection items for the aquatic environment, combining pollution, and updating prediction models.

Occurrence profiling, risk assessment, and correlations of antimicrobials in surface water and groundwater systems in Southwest Nigeria

The presence of antimicrobials in water has grown into a major global health concern. This study thus focused on the presence, ecological implications, and potential health risks associated with nine antimicrobials: five antibiotics (ampicillin, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, metronidazole, and tetracycline) and four parabens (methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben) in surface water and groundwater samples collected from three Southwestern States in Nigeria (Osun, Oyo, and Lagos States). These antimicrobials were widely detected across the three States with ciprofloxacin being the most dominant having maximum average concentrations of 189 μg L-1 and 319 μg L-1 in surface water and groundwater respectively. The range of average concentrations of antibiotics in surface water are 47.3-235 μg L-1 (Osun), 27.9-166 μg L-1 (Oyo) and 52.1-159 μg L-1 (Lagos). For groundwater, it is 35.3-180 μg L-1 (Osun), 26.5-181 μg L-1 (Oyo) and 32.3-319 μg L-1 (Lagos). The average concentrations of all parabens were 32.4-153 μg L-1, 53.4-80.1 μg L-1, and 83.2-132 μg L-1 for surface water and 46.7-55.7 μg L-1, 53-117 μg L-1, and 62.4-118 μg L-1 for groundwater in Osun, Oyo, and Lagos States respectively. Methylparaben was most frequently detected paraben with average concentrations of 153 μg L-1 and 117 μg L-1 in surface water and groundwater respectively. The measured environmental concentrations of these antimicrobials pose a significant ecological risk while those of ciprofloxacin and ampicillin pose a high health risk to all population groups studied. The average concentrations of antibiotics investigated in this study exceeded their threshold values for Predicted No-Effect Concentrations (PNEC) associated with resistance selection, except for tetracycline.

A mini review of recent progress in the removal of emerging contaminants from pharmaceutical waste using various adsorbents

The presence of emerging contaminants (ECs) originating from pharmaceutical waste in water, wastewater, and marine ecosystems at various geographical locations has been clearly publicised. This review paper presents an overview of current monitoring data on the occurrences and distributions of ECs in coastal ecosystem, tap water, surface water, ground water, treated sewage effluents, and other sources. Technological advancements for EC removal are also presented, which include physical, chemical, biological, and hybrid treatments. Adsorption remains the most effective method to remove ECs from water bodies. Various types of adsorbents, such as activated carbons, biochars, nanoadsorbents (carbon nanotubes and graphene), ordered mesoporous carbons, molecular imprinting polymers, clays, zeolites, and metal-organic frameworks have been extensively used for removing ECs from water sources and wastewater. Extensive findings on adsorptive performances, process efficiency, reusability properties, and other related information are thoroughly discussed in this mini review.

Pharmaceutically active compounds in aqueous environment: recent developments in their fate, occurrence and elimination for efficient water purification

The existence of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in the water is a major concern for environmentalists due to their deleterious effects on living organisms even at minuscule concentrations. This review focuses on PhACs such as analgesics and anti-inflammatory compounds, which are massively excreted in urine and account for the majority of pharmaceutical pollution. Furthermore, other PhACs such as anti-epileptics, beta-blockers and antibiotics are discussed because they also contribute significantly to pharmaceutical pollution in the aquatic environment. This review is divided into two parts. In the first part, different classes of PhACs and their fate in the wastewater environment are presented. In the second part, recent advances in the removal of PhACs by conventional wastewater treatment plants, including membrane bioreactors (MBRs), activated carbon adsorption and bench-scale studies concerning a broad range of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) that render practical and appropriate strategies for the complete mineralization and degradation of pharmaceutical drugs, are reviewed. This review indicates that drugs like diclofenac, naproxen, paracetamol and aspirin are removed efficiently by conventional systems. Activated carbon adsorption is suitable for the removal of diclofenac and carbamazepine, whereas AOPs are leading water treatment strategies for the effective removal of reviewed PhACs.

Spatiotemporal distribution and ecological risk assessment of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) from Luoma Lake, an important node of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project

PPCPs (pharmaceuticals and personal care products) are widely found in the environment and can be a risk to human and ecosystem health. In this study, spatiotemporal distribution, critical risk source identification and potential risks of 14 PPCPs found in water collected from sampling points in Luoma Lake and its inflowing rivers in two seasons in 2019 and 2020 were investigated. The PPCPs concentrations ranged from 27.64 ng·L-1 to 613.08 ng·L-1 in December 2019, and from 16.67 ng·L-1 to 3287.41 ng·L-1 in April 2020. Ketoprofen (KPF) dominated the PPCPs with mean concentrations of 125.85 ng·L-1 and 640.26 ng·L-1, respectively. Analysis of sources showed that the pollution in Luoma Lake mostly originated from sewage treatment plant effluents, inflowing rivers and domestic wastewater. Among them, the inflowing rivers contributed the most (82.95%) to the concentration of total PPCPs. The results of ecological risk assessment showed that there was a moderate risk (0.1 < RQs < 1) from carbamazepine (CBZ) in December 2019 and a high risk (RQs > 1) from naproxen (NPX) in April 2020. The results of human risk assessment found that NPX posed a high risk to infant health, and we found that NPX was associated with 83 diseases according to Comparative Toxicogenomics Database. NPX was identified as a substance requiring major attention. The results provide an understanding of the concentrations and ecological risks of PPCPs in Luoma Lake. We believe the data will support environmental departments to develop management strategies and prevent PPCPs pollution.

Health risks posed by environmental benzophenone-type ultraviolet filters (BP-UVFs): An investigation into the binding of BP-UVFs to trypsin and their adverse effects

Benzophenone-type ultraviolet filters (BP-UVFs) are ubiquitous in the environment, and people frequently ingest them via food chain and drinking water. However, there is no clear information about whether BP-UVFs are detrimental to human health. Herein, experiments using multi-spectroscopy revealed typical BP-UVFs, i.e., benzophenone (BP), 2-hydroxybenzophenone (2-OHBP), 4-hydroxybenzophenone (4-OHBP), 2,2'-dihydroxybenzophenone (2,2'-OHBP), 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone (2,4-OHBP), 4,4'-dihydroxybenzophenone (4,4'-OHBP), 2,4,4'-trihydroxybenzophenone (2,4,4'-OHBP), 2,2',4,4'-tetraphydroxybenzophenone (2,2',4,4'-OHBP), 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone (2-OH-4-MeOBP) and 2,2'-dihydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone (2,2'-OH-4-MeOBP), could bind to the active site of trypsin with different binding constants (2.69 × 104-1.07 × 106 L/mol), cause structural abnormalities and inhibit the enzymatic activity in varying degrees, indicating that the BP-UVFs ingestion poses a risk to human health. In contrast to previous research, this study systematically analysed the binding mechanism using an innovative combination of molecular docking and advanced quantum chemistry calculations, including molecular dynamics simulations, energy calculations, etc. The results revealed that most amino acids that make up trypsin have a greater positive electrostatic surface potential (ESP). Therefore, the greater the area and distribution of negative ESP in a particular BP-UVFs, the more easily it will bind to trypsin. This provides new insight into the binding of pollutants to proteins. This study suggests a need for better monitoring and control of environmental BP-UVFs.

Interaction of Microbes with Microplastics and Nanoplastics in the Agroecosystems-Impact on Antimicrobial Resistance

Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are hotspots for the exchange of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) between different bacterial taxa in the environment. Propagation of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global public health issue that needs special attention concerning horizontal gene transfer (HGT) under micro-nano plastics (MNPs) pressure. Interactions between MNPs and microbes, or mere persistence of MNPs in the environment (either water or soil), influence microbial gene expressions, affecting autochthonous microbiomes, their resistomes, and the overall ecosystem. The adsorption of a range of co-contaminants on MNPs leads to the increased interaction of pollutants with microbes resulting in changes in AMR, virulence, toxin production, etc. However, accurately estimating the extent of MNP infestation in agroecosystems remains challenging. The main limitation in estimating the level of MNPs contamination in agroecosystems, surface and subsurface waters, or sediments is the lack of standardized protocols for extraction of MPs and analytical detection methods from complex high organic content matrices. Nonetheless, recent advances in MPs detection from complex matrices with high organic matter content are highly promising. This review aims to provide an overview of relevant information available to date and summarize the already existing knowledge about the mechanisms of MNP-microbe interactions including the different factors with influence on HGT and AMR. In-depth knowledge of the enhanced ARGs propagation in the environment under the influence of MNPs could raise the needed awareness, about future consequences and emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Safety of benzophenone-type UV filters: A mini review focusing on carcinogenicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity

Consumer products containing benzophenone-type ultraviolet (UV) filters (BPs) have been widely accepted by the public, resulting in the widely existence of various BPs in the human body and environment. In recent years, more and more evidences show that BPs are endocrine disruptors. In view of the continuous exposure risk of BPs and their endocrine disrupting characteristics, the carcinogenicity of BPs and their effects on reproduction and development are of particular concern. However, due to the wide varieties of BPs and the scattered toxicity studies on BPs, people have a limited understanding on the safety of BPs. Therefore, this paper systematically reviews the carcinogenicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity of BPs in order to expand people's knowledge on the health risks of BPs and screen for more safe BPs. Although existing toxicological studies are insufficient, it can be determined that BPs have different potentials for carcinogenicity, and reproductive and developmental toxicity. Among those BPs, 2-hydroxyl-4-methoxyl benzophenone needs to be used with caution due to its adverse effects on cancer cell proliferation and migration, reproductive ability, sex differentiation, neurodevelopment, and so on. It is worth noting that functional group substitutions significantly affect the interaction between BPs and biomolecules such as DNA, cancer cells, and seminal fluid, resulting in different levels of toxicity. In short, it is very necessary to evaluate the carcinogenicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity of BPs, which is of great significance for establishing reasonable BPs content standards in cosmetics, water quality treatment standards for BPs, and so on.

Trace analysis of benzophenone-type UV filters in water and their effects on human estrogen and androgen receptors

To carry out risk assessments of benzophenone-type UV filters (BPs), fast and accurate analytical methods are crucial to determine and monitor levels in the environment. This study presents an LC-MS/MS method that requires minimal sample preparation and yet can identify 10 different BPs in environmental samples such as surface or wastewater resulting in a LOQ range from 2 to 1060 ng/L. The method suitability was tested through environmental monitoring, which showed that, BP-4 is the most abundant derivative found in the surface waters of Germany, India, South Africa and Vietnam. BP-4 levels correlate with the WWTP effluent fraction of the respective river for selected samples in Germany. Peak values of 171 ng/L for 4-hydroxybenzophenone (4-OH-BP), as measured in Vietnamese surface water, already exceed the PNEC value of 80 ng/L, elevating 4-OH-BP to the status of a new pollutant that needs more frequent monitoring. Moreover, this study reveals that during biodegradation of benzophenone in river water, the transformation product 4-OH-BP is formed which contain structural alerts for estrogenic activity. By using yeast-based reporter gene assays, this study provides bio-equivalents of 9 BPs, 4-OH-BP, 2,3,4-tri-OH-BP, 4-cresol and benzoate and complements the existing structure-activities relationships of BPs and their degradation products.

The binding mechanism of benzophenone-type UV filters and human serum albumin: The role of site, number, and type of functional group substitutions

Benzophenone-type UV filters (BPs) are common in natural aquatic environments. They can cause endocrine disruption or other adverse effects once they enter the human body via the food chain or drinking water. The primary cause of BPs accumulation and toxicity is the transport of BPs into the human body. Functional group substitutions can have a significant impact on the interactions of BPs and transporters, resulting in a variety of impact effects. Therefore, we explored the interaction between human serum albumin (HSA, a typical transporter) and ten typical BPs [benzophenone (BP1), 2-hydroxybenzophenone (BP2), 4-hydroxybenzophenone (BP3), 2,2'-dihydroxybenzophenone (BP4), 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone (BP5), 4,4'-dihydroxybenzophenone (BP6), 2,4,4'-trihydroxybenzophenone (BP7), 2,2',4,4'-tetrahydroxybenzophenone (BP8), 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone (BP9), and 2,2'-dihydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone (BP10)] to study the role of functional group substitutions in binding. The results showed that BPs could bind to HSA at site 2, with binding constants ranging from 2.01 × 10³ to 4.57 × 10⁵ L/mol. Compared to BP1, hydroxyl and methoxy substitutions enhanced the BPs-HSA binding. The combined effect of the number and site of hydroxyl substitution at BPs determined the binding strength between BPs and HSA. It was more accessible to bind HSA when BPs were substituted with para-hydroxyl (4-hydroxyl) groups than with ortho-hydroxyl (2-hydroxyl) groups. Moreover, the additional para-methoxy (4-methoxy) group increased the BP-HSA binding strength by approximately 47 times under the same hydroxyl substitution conditions. Theoretical calculations revealed that functional group substitutions increased the intermolecular binding force by increasing the negative electrostatic potential surface area of BPs, which significantly increased the electrostatic and dispersion forces between the BPs and HSA. This BPs-HSA binding decreased the α-helix of HSA and influenced the ratio of other secondary structures, including β-sheet, β-turn, and random coil of HSA. This study provides a theoretical and experimental foundation for understanding the human health risks associated with BPs.

Insight into pharmaceutical and personal care products removal using constructed wetlands: A comprehensive review

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) were regarded as emerging environmental pollutants due to their ubiquitous appearance and high environmental risks. The wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) became the hub of PPCPs receiving major sources of PPCPs used by humans. Increasing concern has been focused on promoting cost-effective ways to eliminate PPCPs within WWTPs for blocking their route into the environment through effluent discharging. Among all advanced technologies, constructed wetlands (CWs) with a combination of plants, substrates, and microbes attracted attention due to their cost-effectiveness and easier maintenance during long-term operation. This study offers baseline data for risk control and future treatment by discussing the extent and dispersion of PPCPs in surface waters over the past ten years and identifying the mechanisms of PPCPs removal in CWs based on the up-to-present research, with a special focus on the contribution of sediments, vegetation, and the interactions of microorganisms. The significant role of wetland plants in the removal of PPCPs was detailed discussed in identifying the contribution of direct uptake, adsorption, phytovolatilization, and biodegradation. Meanwhile, the correlation between the physical-chemical characteristics of PPCPs, the configuration operation of wetlands, as well as the environmental conditions with PPCP removal were also further estimated. Finally, the critical issues and knowledge gaps before the real application were addressed followed by promoted future works, which are expected to provide a comprehensive foundation for study on PPCPs elimination utilizing CWs and drive to achieve large-scale applications to treat PPCPs-contaminated surface waters.

Adsorption of recalcitrant contaminants of emerging concern onto activated carbon: A laboratory and pilot-scale study

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the definition of water quality indicators, including contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), associated with the development of multi-barrier approaches for wastewater treatment, are crucial steps towards direct potable reuse of water. The aims of this study were 1) quantifying twelve CECs (including pharmaceutical, stimulant, and artificial sweetener compounds) in both untreated and treated wastewater samples in a Brazilian wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) using bidimensional liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry, allowing the selection of five marker (i.e., priority) CECs; 2) evaluating the adsorption potential of such selected CECs [caffeine, hydrochlorothiazide, saccharin, sucralose (SUC), and sulfamethoxazole (SMX)] onto coconut-shell granular activated carbon (GAC); and 3) investigating the removal of the same CECs by a multi-barrier system (pilot-scale, 350 L h^-1) treating the effluent of the WWTP and composed of reverse osmosis (RO), photoperoxidation (UV/H₂O₂), and filtration with GAC. Such technologies were tested separately and in binary or ternary combinations. Eleven and eight CECs were detected and quantified on the untreated and treated wastewater samples of the Brazilian WWTP, respectively. For the treated wastewater, the concentrations ranged from 499 ng L^-1 (SMX) to 87,831 ng L^-1 (SUC). The adsorption onto AC data fitted the Sips isotherm model, indicating monolayer chemisorption, which was also suggested by the mean adsorption energy values (>16 kJ mol^-1). SMX and SUC were the most and the least adsorbed CECs (4.33 and 1.21 mg g^-1, respectively). Concerning the pilot-scale treatment plant, the ternary combination (RO + UV/H₂O₂+GAC) removed >99% of the five marker CECs and promoted reductions on water color, turbidity, as well as on nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations. Further studies on water reuse could prioritize the selected marker CECs as quality indicators. While the removal of marker CECs is one of the WHO performance requirements, the RO + UV/H₂O₂+GAC system showed promising results as a first approach to direct potable reuse of water.

Photo-Fenton process applied for the treatment of industrial wastewaters containing diclofenac: optimization with low iron ions concentrations and without pH control

Diclofenac (DCF) can cause several adverse effects in the environment and it should be removed from industrial pharmaceutical wastewaters. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are promising methods for the DCF degradation. But, in many cases, AOPs require acidic pH. However, at this condition, DCF precipitates, which may hinder its oxidation. Thus, in this work, some AOP were studied for the DCF degradation, especially the photo-Fenton process, applying the experimental design technique (Doehlert matrix), operating without and with pH control (between 6.5 and 7.0). As independent variables, the initial ferrous ion concentration ([Fe²⁺]) and the molar addition rate of H₂O₂ (F_H2O2) were evaluated. Empirical models were proposed and optimized conditions were determined without ([Fe²⁺] = 0.27 mmol L^-1 and F_H2O2 = 1.64 mmol min^-1) and with pH control ([Fe²⁺] = 1.0 mmol L^-1 and F_H2O2 = 1.64 mmol L^-1), with the following predicted mineralization percentages: 93% and 68%, respectively. So, photo-Fenton process without pH control presented the best performances. Furthermore, at this condition, iron concentration respects the limit value established by the Brazilian environmental legislation. That is, in this condition, additional processes, in order to remove iron ions, would not be necessary, that is very interesting for applications on an industrial scale.

Sand and sand-GAC filtration technologies in removing PPCPs: A review

Concerns have been raised about the risks that pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic environments posed to humans and the environment. In recent years, sand filtration has been used to potentially remove these emerging contaminants from water. However, there has been no review of the effectiveness of this technology to date. This paper presents a brief introduction of sand filtration types, reviews the current progress in PPCPs removal through sand filtration, and discusses the mechanisms behind this process and the combination of granular activated carbon (GAC) and sand as an enhanced sand-GAC filtration technology. Sand filtration achieves a reasonable but highly variable degree of PPCPs removal. Biodegradation and adsorption are the two main mechanisms of PPCPs removal, in particular the biodegradation since adsorption capacity of sand is relatively low. Other processes, such as bio-sorption and indirect adsorption, may also contribute to PPCPs removal. To compensate for the inadequate PPCPs removal through sand filtration, porous GAC has been combined with sand to develop sand-GAC filtration technologies. Serial, dual, and sandwich filters have been investigated, and significant removal enhancement has been observed, due to the strengthened adsorption capacity, suggesting the applicability of these variants. Future research focus, such as investigating the influence of different operational conditions on sand filter performance, obtaining a deeper understanding of the various removal mechanisms, and investigating of long-term performance of the filter used for PPCPs removal, are suggested.

Updated knowledge, partitioning and ecological risk of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in global aquatic environments

Over the last few decades, the occurrence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic environments has generated increasing public concern. In this review, data on the presence of PPCPs in environmental compartments from the past few years (2014-2022) are summarized by carrying out a critical survey of the partitioning among water, sediment, and aquatic organisms. From the available articles on PPCP occurrence in the environment, in Web of Science and Scopus databases, 185 articles were evaluated. Diclofenac, carbamazepine, caffeine, ibuprofen, ciprofloxacin, and sulfamethoxazole were reported to occur in 85% of the studies in at least one of the mentioned matrices. Risk assessment showed a moderate to high environmental risk for these compounds worldwide. Moreover, bioconcentration factors showed that sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim can bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms, while ciprofloxacin and triclosan present bioaccumulation potential. Regarding spatial distribution, the Asian and European continents presented most studies on the occurrence and effects of PPCPs on the environment, while Africa and Asia are the most contaminated continents. In addition, the impact of COVID-19 on environmental contamination by PPCPs is discussed.

A review toward contaminants of emerging concern in Brazil: Occurrence, impact and their degradation by advanced oxidation process in aquatic matrices

This work presents data regarding the occurrence and treatment of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) in Brazil in the past decade. The literature review (2011-2021) revealed the detection of 87 pharmaceutical drugs and personal care products, 58 pesticides, 8 hormones, 2 illicit drugs, caffeine and bisphenol A in distinct matrices (i.e.: wastewater, groundwater, sea water, rainwater, surface water, drinking water and hospital effluent). Concentrations of CECs varied from ng-μg L^-1 depending on the location, compound and matrix. The inefficiency of conventional wastewater treatment methods on the removal of CECs and lack of basic sanitation in some regions in the country aggravates contamination of Brazilian aquatic environments and poses potential environmental and health risks. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are pointed out as viable and efficient alternatives to degrade CECs and prevent environmental contamination. A total of 375 studies involving the use of AOPs in Brazilian aqueous matrices were published in the last decade. Fenton and photo-Fenton processes, photo-peroxidation, ozonation, electrochemical advanced oxidation and heterogeneous photocatalysis are some of the AOPs applied by Brazilian research groups. Although many works discuss the importance of applying these technologies for CECs removal in real treatment plants, most of these studies assess the treatment of distilled water or simulated effluent. Therefore, the conduction of studies applying AOPs in real matrices are critical to drive the implementation of these processes coupled to conventional water and wastewater treatment in real plants in order to prevent the contamination of environmental matrices by CECs in Brazil.

The abundance of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in downstream of the Bengawan Solo and Brantas rivers located in Indonesia

Numerous chemical substances are used for daily life activities have an effect on the endocrine system and are frequently classed as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). The present study investigated the fact and distribution of EDCs type (estrogen, plasticizer, and preservative). In particular, EDCs such as estriol, 1,2,4 triazole, 17α-ethinylestradiol, methyl paraben, estrone, 3,4,4 trichlorocarbanilide, 17β-estradiol, and bisphenol A (BPA) were selected as the target EDCs for the detection in the Bengawan Solo and Brantas rivers located in Indonesia. Among the targeted EDCs, BPA is found to be highest in the water samples of Bengawan Solo (1070 ng/L and mean at 219 ng/L) and Brantas (556 ng/L and mean at 222 ng/L) rivers. The EDCs concentration is higher in both rivers during the dry season compared to the wet season due to the dilution effect caused by heavy rainfall. The entry of municipal wastewater is the primary sources of EDCs contamination in both rivers. Finally, this study suggests that the contamination level of EDCs in river water could pose an environmental threat, particularly during dry seasons.

The impact of micropollutants on native algae and cyanobacteria communities in ecological filters during drinking water treatment

An attractive alternative for drinking water production is ecological filtration. Previous studies have reported high removal levels of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) by this technology. Algae and cyanobacteria play an important role in the biological activity of ecological filters. The aim of this study was to characterize and identify the community of algae and cyanobacteria in relation to its composition, density and biovolume from 22 ecological filters that received spikings of 2 μg L^-1 PPCPs. For algae and cyanobacteria species, triplicate samples were collected before and 96 h after each spiking from the interface between the top sand layer of the ecological filters and the supernatant water. Results show that Chlorophyceae and Cyanobacteria were present in high numbers of taxa and abundance. The specie Lepocinclis cf. ovum (Euglenophyceae) had the highest percentage occurrence/abundance and frequency into the filters, indicating a possible tolerance by Lepocinclis cf. ovum to the concentration of selected PPCPs. Although the concentration of PPCPs did not affect the treated water quality, they did affect the algae and cyanobacteria community. No differences were detected between filters that received a single PPCP and filters that received a mixture of the six compounds. Also, changes in the composition of algae and cyanobacteria communities were observed before and 96 h after the spikings.

Structure-related endocrine-disrupting potential of environmental transformation products of benzophenone-type UV filters: A review

Benzophenone-type UV filters (BPs) represent a very diverse group of chemicals that are used across a range of industrial sectors around the world. They are found within different environmental compartments (e.g. surface water, groundwater, wastewater, sediments and biota) at concentrations ranging from ng/L to mg/L. Some are known as endocrine disruptors and are currently within the scope of international regulations. A structural alert for high potential of endocrine disrupting activity was assigned to 11 BP derivatives. Due to the widespread use, distribution and disruptive effects of some BPs, knowledge of their elimination pathways is required. This review demonstrates that biodegradation and photolytic decomposition are the major elimination processes for BP-type UV filters in the environment. Under aerobic conditions, transformation pathways have only been reported for BP, BP-3 and BP-4, which are also the most common derivatives. Primary biodegradation mainly results in the formation of hydroxylated BPs, which exhibit a structure-related increase in endocrine activity when compared to their parent substances. By combining 76 literature-based transformation products (TPs) with in silico results relating to their receptor activity, it is demonstrated that 32 TPs may retain activity and that further knowledge of the degradation of BPs in the environment is needed.

Indigenous Bacillus paramycoides spp. and Alcaligenes faecalis: sustainable solution for bioremediation of hospital wastewater

Farmers near towns and cities are using a wide range of highly polluted wastewaters for crop irrigation in Pakistan due to severe freshwater shortage. The present study aimed to promote indigenous bacterial strains isolated from domestic, hospital, textile, pharmaceutical and mixed wastewaters to remove contaminants and colour and render these wastewaters safer for irrigation. Thirty seven bacterial strains were isolated from five wastewater samples collected from different sites in Lahore, Pakistan. Under optimal growth conditions, three isolates (D6, D7 and P1) showed >93% decolourisation potential in the treatment of hospital wastewater. 16S rDNA sequencing identified two of these isolates (D6 and D7) as showing 100% and 99.86% homology to Bacillus paramycoides spp. - novel strains from B. cereus group. Isolate P1 showed 97.47% homology to Alcaligenes faecalis. GCMS analysis of the untreated hospital wastewater revealed the presence of pharmaceutic pollutants, i.e. Phenol (876 µg/L), Salicylic acid (48 µg/L), Caffeine (7 µg/L), Naproxen (23 µg/L), Octadecene (185 µg/L) and Diazepam (14 µg/L). The analysis of treated hospital wastewaters showed percentage degradation of pharmaceutic pollutants (100%-43%) and significant reduction in the BOD₅ (91%-68%), COD (89%-52%) and heavy metals concentrations. These strains therefore can represent a low-cost and low-tech alternative to bioremediate complex matrices of hospital wastewater prior to crop irrigation to support the achievement of clean re-usable water in developing countries like Pakistan.

Screening organic contaminants in soil by two-dimensional gas chromatography high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry: A non-target analysis strategy and contaminated area case study

Thousands of organic substances that are used in industrial applications ultimately enter the soil and may negatively affect human health. Limited numbers of target pollutants are usually monitored in environmental media because of analytical limitations. In this study, a non-target screening method for quickly analyzing multiple soil samples from a contaminated area (a chemical industry park) by two-dimensional gas chromatography high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry was developed. The types of compounds present in the soil samples were preliminarily analyzed through data simplification and visual assessment. A total of 81 organic compounds with detection frequencies ≥40% in the samples from the chemical industry park were selected for identification, including 38 PAHs, 26 oxygenated organic compounds, eight N-containing compounds, and nine other compounds. Potential sources of the organic compounds in the industrial park were investigated. Some pharmaceutical and organic synthetic intermediates in the soil were affected by nearby chemical plants. After assessing the relative abundances and detection frequencies, 36 pollutants that may pose potential risks to the environment were preliminarily identified. The results of the study were helpful for assessing environmental risks around Yangkou industrial park and they will be helpful when assessing risks in other contaminated areas.

Spatial autocorrelation and temporal variation of contaminants of emerging concern in a typical urbanizing river

The distribution and fate of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) was studied in relation to hydrological conditions, land use characteristics, and spatial contiguity in Houxi River. Thirty-four CECs were detected in the surface water during a three-year sampling campaign. Caffeine was most prevalent (99% frequency), while bisphenol A had the highest median concentration (78.2 ng/L) among the detected CECs. Caffeine and the other prevalent CECs lincomycin and bisphenol A, with median concentrations of 3.89 ng/L, 0.26 ng/L, and 78.2 ng/L, respectively, were positively correlated with land use types related to anthropogenic activities (grass, barren, built up, and cropland areas and landscape indexes for human activities). The analysis of similarities revealed significant annual variations, with increasing trends in both the concentrations and detection frequencies of CECs. Spatial variations were demonstrated by higher concentrations and detection frequencies downstream compared to upstream. The singular value decomposition analysis revealed that the downstream sites were the major contributors (55.6%-100%) to the spatial variability of most CECs. Moran's I analysis based on downstream contiguity indicated strong spatial autocorrelation among the connected sites for most CECs. This was further supported by longer correlation lengths for 18 CECs than the average distance between the sampling sites. The spatial autocorrelation can be attributed to the physicochemical properties of CECs and local hydrological dynamics, including temperature, wind speed, and sunshine hours. For most CECs, local contribution predominated over neighbor influence with an average value of 75.5%. The results of this study provide new insight to evaluate CEC distributions, which will be beneficial to policymakers for the management and prioritization of CEC contaminants in the Houxi watershed.

Occurrence and human exposure assessment of parabens in water sources in Osun State, Nigeria

Parabens are chemicals extensively used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, personal hygiene and food products as preservatives. They are classified as emerging contaminants with endocrine-disrupting capability. In this study, the concentrations of Methylparaben (MeP), Ethylparaben (EtP), Propylparaben (PrP) and Butylparaben (BuP) were obtained from groundwater, surface-water and packaged water samples collected from urban and rural areas of Osun State, Nigeria using HPLC-UV equipment. Data obtained were subjected to descriptive (Mean ± SD), inferential (Kruskal-Wallis test) and multivariate analyses. MeP had the highest average concentration of 163 and 68 μg L^-1 in surface water and groundwater respectively while concentrations of MeP, EtP, PrP and BuP were higher than previously reported in other countries. Methylparaben had the highest detection frequencies (88.0 and 50.0%) followed by BuP (69.0 and 50.0%) in surface water and groundwater respectively. No significant difference was observed for concentrations of parabens in groundwater samples in urban and rural sampling sites, suggesting that people living around these sites are equally exposed to any health implications from the use of paraben-polluted potable water. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) data suggest that the pairs MeP & EtP, PrP & BuP (in surface water samples) and MeP, EtP, & PrP (in groundwater samples) are from similar pollution sources. Ecological risk assessment using Algae, Fish, and Daphnia suggests Daphnia as the most sensitive organism while BuP and PrP show the highest health risk. Human exposure assessment showed that higher overall median estimated daily intake (EDI) values for groundwater were observed in infants (1.71 μg kg^-1 bw day^-1, ∑PBs) compared to toddlers (1.03 μg kg^-1 bw day^-1, ∑PBs), children (0.64 μg kg^-1 bw day^-1, ∑PBs), teenagers (0.51 μg kg^-1 bw day^-1, ∑PBs) and adults (0.62 μg kg^-1 bw day^-1, ∑PBs). Although these values are below limits set in a few countries, potential bioaccumulation could lead to severe health consequences.

Screen-Printed Voltammetric Sensors-Tools for Environmental Water Monitoring of Painkillers

The dynamic production and usage of pharmaceuticals, mainly painkillers, indicates the growing problem of environmental contamination. Therefore, the monitoring of pharmaceutical concentrations in environmental samples, mostly aquatic, is necessary. This article focuses on applying screen-printed voltammetric sensors for the voltammetric determination of painkillers residues, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, paracetamol, and tramadol in environmental water samples. The main advantages of these electrodes are simplicity, reliability, portability, small instrumental setups comprising the three electrodes, and modest cost. Moreover, the electroconductivity, catalytic activity, and surface area can be easily improved by modifying the electrode surface with carbon nanomaterials, polymer films, or electrochemical activation.

Pollution characterization of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in the northwest of Tai Lake Basin, China: Occurrence, temporal changes, riverine flux and risk assessment

PhACs have attracted great attentions of researchers because of their potential ecological and healthy risks. However, their long-term pollution tendency study is very scarce. In this study, 32 target PhACs from surface water, wastewater treatment plants, fishponds and livestock farms were investigated in Wujin, a city located in the northeast of Tai Lake, using grab sampling. The occurrence, spatiotemporal distribution characteristics, potential sources, riverine flux and risk assessment were systematically analyzed. It was found that non-antibiotics were the mainly PhACs category in Wujin and CF, SMX were the predominant non-antibiotics and antibiotics, respectively. Besides, the average concentrations of total PhACs were 586.6 ng L^-1 and 273.2 ng L^-1 in 2018 and 2019, respectively. This improvement could be mainly attributed to the closure of fishponds and livestock farms. Moreover, CF/CBZ ratios which was considered as an indicator to trace untreated wastewater decrease significantly in 2019, and this was also a main reason for the improvement. Riverine flux could be calculated through arranging control sampling sites in the boundary and the net riverine inflow flux of PhACs in Wujin was 264.3 kg/a. Finally, CF, SMX, EM were evaluated as the high risk contaminants based on a comprehensive risk assessment method.

A critical overview of household slow sand filters for water treatment

Household, or point-of-use (POU), water treatments are effective alternatives to provide safe drinking water in locations isolated from a water treatment and distribution network. The household slow sand filter (HSSF) is amongst the most effective and promising POU alternatives available today. Since the development of the patented biosand filter in the early 1990s, the HSSF has undergone a number of modifications and adaptations to improve its performance, making it easier to operate and increase users' acceptability. Consequently, several HSSF models are currently available, including those with alternative designs and constant operation, in addition to the patented ones. In this scenario, the present paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview from the earliest to the most recent publications on the HSSF design, operational parameters, removal mechanisms, efficiency, and field experiences. Based on a critical discussion, this paper will contribute to expanding the knowledge of HSSF in the peer-reviewed literature.

Benzophenone-3 breaches mouse Sertoli cell barrier and alters F-actin organization without evoking apoptosis

Benzophenone-3 (BP-3), one of the most commonly utilized ultraviolet filters in personal care products, has aroused public concern in recent years for its high chances of human exposure. Previous studies have found that BP-3 can impair testes development and spermatogenesis, but the targets of BP-3 are still unknown. In this study, primary Sertoli cells from 20-day-old mice were treated in vitro with 0-100 μM BP-3 for 24 h to identify its toxicity on Sertoli cells and Sertoli cell barrier. Results demonstrated that BP-3 could induce a notable change in cell morphology and impair Sertoli cell viability. The analysis of transepithelial electrical resistance showed that the integrity of the Sertoli cell barrier was destroyed by BP-3 (100 μM). Some structural proteins of the barrier including ZO-1, Occludin, and Connexin43 were lower expressed and the localization of basal ectoplasmic specializations protein β-catenin was altered because of BP-3 treatment. Further exploration suggested that BP-3 led to Sertoli cell F-actin disorganization by affecting the expression of Rictor, a key component of the mTORC2 complex. Moreover, although increased DNA damage marker γH2A.X was observed in the treatment group, the cell apoptosis rate was changeless which was further confirmed by increased BAX and stable Bcl-2 (two primary apoptosis regulating proteins). In conclusion, this study revealed that BP-3 had the potential to perturb the Sertoli cell barrier through altered junction proteins and disorganized F-actin, but it could hardly evoke Sertoli cell apoptosis.

Emerging contaminants in Brazilian aquatic environment: identifying targets of potential concern based on occurrence and ecological risk

Although studies have shown the presence of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) in the Brazilian environment in recent decades, several biological effects on the aquatic ecosystem are unknown. Brazil is the fifth largest country in extension in the world, and its wide territory presents geographic regions with diverse demographic and economic characteristics. In order to identify targets of potential concern based on occurrence and ecological risk, available data from previous studies were examined to conduct environmental risk analysis and provide a ranking of CECs in Brazilian aquatic environment based on environmental concentration measured in the last 10 years. The results indicate that 17α-ethynylestradiol, 17ß-estradiol, acetaminophen, Bisphenol A, caffeine, diclofenac, ibuprofen, methylparaben, sulfamethoxazole and triclosan are the CECs that represent the greatest threats to the Brazilian environment. Therefore, these contaminants should be considered as a priority in future monitoring studies. Besides, identification of target monitoring compounds can facilitate the selection of pollutant candidates in future legislations.

Safety evaluation and ibuprofen removal via an Alternanthera philoxeroides-based biochar

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) are a representative class of emerging contaminants. This study aimed to investigate the PPCP removal performance and application safety of a biochar fabricated using the invasive plant Alternanthera philoxeroides (APBC). According to scanning electron microscopy and pore size analyses, APBC exhibited a porous structure with a specific surface area of 857.5 m²/g. A Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis indicated the presence of surface functional groups, including phosphorus-containing groups, C=O, C=C, and -OH. The adsorption experiment showed that the maximum removal efficiency of ibuprofen was 97% at an initial concentration of 10 mg/L and APBC dosage of 0.8 g/L. The adsorption kinetics were fitted by the pseudo-second-order model with the highest correlation coefficient (R² = 0.9999). The adsorption isotherms were well described by the Freundlich model (R² = 0.9896), which indicates a dominant multilayer adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity of APBC was 172 mg/g. A toxicity evaluation, based on Chlorella pyrenoidosa and human epidermal BEAS-2B cells, was carried out using a spectrum analysis, thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide assay, and flow cytometry. The results of the above showed the low cytotoxicity of APBC and demonstrated its low toxicity in potential environmental applications.

Removal of antibiotics in sand, GAC, GAC sandwich and anthracite/sand biofiltration systems

Drinking water biofiltration offers the possibility of the removal of trace level micropollutants from source water. Sand, granular activated carbon (GAC), GAC sandwich (a layer of GAC loaded in the middle of sand bed), and anthracite-sand dual biofilters were set-up in duplicate at bench-scale to mimic the filtration process in real drinking water treatment works. During the 3-month system operation, removal of five antibiotics (amoxicillin, clarithromycin, oxytetracycline, sulfamethoxazole, and trimethoprim) and overall biofilter performance were evaluated. Natural surface water spiked with a mixture of the target antibiotics was used as feedwater to the biofilters. Results showed that the target antibiotics were substantially removed (>90%) by GAC-associated biofilters and partially removed (≤20%) by sand alone and anthracite-sand biofilters. In particular, the GAC sandwich biofilter exhibited superior performance compared to sand/anthracite biofilter, and the comparisons among all biofilters indicated that both adsorption and biodegradation contributed to the removal of the target antibiotics in the GAC-associated biofilters. Adsorption kinetics showed that sulfamethoxazole fitted with pseudo-first-order adsorption model, while trimethoprim, amoxicillin, oxytetracycline and clarithromycin fitted the pseudo-second-order model. All antibiotics fitted the Langmuir model according to the isotherm experiment. To date, this is the first study evaluating the removal of antibiotics by GAC sandwich biofilters. Overall, this research will provide useful information which can be used for optimising or updating existing biofiltration processes in industry to reduce antibiotic residues from source water.

Pharmaceutical Pollution and Disposal of Expired, Unused, and Unwanted Medicines in the Brazilian Context

The occurrence of pharmaceuticals in the environment is an everyday recognized concern worldwide, and drugs as environmental contaminants have been detected in water and soil systems, posing risks to humans and wildlife. The presence of drugs in wastewater, groundwater, and even drinking water occurs in several countries, including Brazil, where the pharmaceutical market is expanding over the years. The adverse, harmful effects of pharmaceuticals in the environment range from the spreading of antimicrobial resistance and species survival to the interference with reproduction and increased cancer incidence in humans. Therefore, it is demanding to count on proper legislation to prevent these pollutants from entering the distinct environment compartments. In some developed countries, laws, directives, programs, and initiatives regarding drug disposal reach a mature status. In Brazil, federal laws dealing with drug residues' management are recent, with flaws that might facilitate non-compliance with drug pollution issues. Besides, pharmacies and drugstores are not obligated to collect unneeded household medicines, while particular State laws aim to ordinate the disposal of drug residues regionally. In this review, we consider the current knowledge about pharmaceutical (drug) pollution, the recommendation and regulations on the disposal of useless medicines in some countries, and in the context of the expanding pharmaceutical market in Brazil. The awareness of emerging contaminants in the environment, besides the joint effort of authorities, consumers, and the general public nationwide, will be required to avoid pharmaceutical/drug pollution and achieve an eco-friendly environment and a sustainable society.

Highly enhanced biodegradation of pharmaceutical and personal care products in a novel tidal flow constructed wetland with baffle and plants

Research on decentralized wastewaters deserves special focus due to the potential abundance of emerging organic pollutants including pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), which might pose serious threats to the local water bodies and even to human health. Constructed wetland (CW) is a common decentralized wastewater treatment technology, with a certain ability to eliminate PPCPs. Nonetheless, PPCPs removal in common CWs is frequently challenging, besides, the removal mechanism remains elusive. Based on our previous study, tidal flow constructed wetlands (TFCWs) is effective in nitrogen removal. Here, 3 TFCWs with different modifications (baffle, plants, both baffle and plants) were constructed to treat raw domestic sewage and specifically to evaluate the removal efficiencies and mechanism of PPCPs. 24 PPCPs including 7 antibiotics, 8 steroid hormones and 9 biocides were detected in the level of 1.10 ± 0.29 ng/L-799 ± 10.6 ng/L in the influents. Consequently, we found that modification with both baffle and plants significantly influenced the removal of PPCPs. Moreover, the highest removal rates of biocides (97.1 ± 0.29%), steroid hormones (99.8 ± 0.02%), and antibiotics (90.2 ± 1.60%) were achieved via both baffles and plants in TFCWs. Based on the mass balance analysis, microbial degradation dominated the removal of PPCPs with a percentage higher than 85.7%, followed by substrate adsorption (5.22 × 10^-2-14.3%) and plant uptake (1.66 × 10^-3-0.44%). Further, 16S rDNA sequencing analysis revealed that the presence of baffle and plants improve the removal efficiency of PPCPs by means of enhancing microbial diversity and changing dominant microorganisms. Moreover, Thaumarchaeota was potentially the key microorganism in the phylum level for PPCPs elimination by TFCWs through LEfSe (linear discriminant analysis (LDA) effect size) analysis. These findings provide new insights into the removal of PPCPs in CWs.

Defect enrich ultrathin TiO2 nanosheets for rapid adsorption and visible light mediated PPCPs degradation

Recently, PPCPs have attracted extensive attention as emerging pollutants. Due to the strong hydrophilicity and small molecular weight, PPCPs are difficult to be fully removed by adsorption and other processes, posing a serious threat to the ecological environment. Here, we demonstrate solvothermal synthesis of defect enrich TiO₂ nanosheets through simple copper doping. Novel TiO₂ nanosheets were found to be mesoporous with high specific surface area and exhibited excellent visible light response. Performance of the developed TiO₂ nanosheets were evaluated towards photocatalytic degradation of two model pollutants, tetracycline and acetaminophen. Results showed robust degradation of tetracycline and acetaminophen under visible-light irradiation within 100 min. Meanwhile, the potential relationship between the structural characteristics and excellent ability of the catalyst was discussed, as well as probable mechanism. Additionally, a study on the toxicity of tetracycline solution to human skin epidermal cells showed that the toxicity of the treated solution to cells is greatly reduced. The prepared catalysts show good repeatability (a slightly decrease ca.3% after 5 cycles) and applicability, providing a reasonable design for water remediation.

Prevalence and hazardous impact of pharmaceutical and personal care products and antibiotics in environment: A review on emerging contaminants

Antibiotic resistance is a global health emergency linked to unrestrained use of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) as prophylactic agent and therapeutic purposes across various industries. Occurrence of pharmaceuticals are identified in ground water, surface water, soils, and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in ng/L to μg/L concentration range. The prevalence of organic compounds including antimicrobial agents, hormones, antibiotics, preservatives, disinfectants, synthetic musks etc. in environment have posed serious health concerns. The aim of this review is to elucidate the major sources accountable for emergence of antibiotic resistance. For this purpose, variety of introductory sources and fate of PPCPs in aquatic environment including human and veterinary wastes, aquaculture and agriculture related wastes, and other anthropogenic activities have been discussed. Furthermore, genetic and enzymatic factors responsible for transfer and appearance of antibiotic resistance genes are presented. Ecotoxicity of PPCPs has been studied in environment in order to present risk imposed to human and ecological health. As per published literature reports, the removal of antibiotics and related traces being difficult, couples the possibility of emergence of antibiotic resistance and hence sustainability in global water resources. Therefore, research on environmental behavior and control strategies should be conducted along with assessing their chronic toxicity to identify potential human and ecological risks.

Polypyrrole-functionalized magnetic Bi2MoO6 nanocomposites as a fast, efficient and reusable adsorbent for removal of ketoprofen and indomethacin from aqueous solution

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) as emerging organic pollutants have received widespread attention. A novel composite adsorbent was successfully prepared through the modification of polypyrrole (PPy) onto the surface of magnetic Bi₂MoO₆ (MnFe₂O₄/Bi₂MoO₆/PPy) and acted as excellent adsorbent to remove organic compounds from aqueous solution. The adsorbent was characterized by SEM, TEM, FT-IR, XRD, BET, VSM, XPS and PES. The resulting composites combined the advantages of all three parts and possessed porous structure and magnetic properties, which showed excellent adsorption performance for ketoprofen (KET) and indomethacin (IDM), as evidenced by 87.03% and 86.24% of removal in just 120 min at initial concentration of 10 mg/L, respectively. The adsorption processes of MnFe₂O₄/Bi₂MoO₆/PPy for PPCPs were well fitted with the pseudo-second order kinetic model and described better by Langmuir isotherm model. The possible adsorption mechanisms of KET and IDM by MnFe₂O₄/Bi₂MoO₆/PPy were provided. Additionally, the effect of other coexisting substances was also explored using Cu²⁺ as a model. Moreover, the adsorption performances were further studied to remove several dyes, in which showed superior affinity for anionic dyes. In practical application, it had almost equal removal capacity for KET both in the Yellow River water and sewage treatment plant inlet water.

Hybrid constructed wetlands as post-treatment of blackwater: An assessment of the removal of antibiotics

New sanitation systems have been developed to treat, recover energy and nutrients, and permit reuse processes at the source of generation, minimizing water use and flow segregation. Thus, this study was carried out with the objective of evaluating the potential of hybrid constructed wetlands in the removal of organic matter, nutrients, pathogenic microorganisms, and 12 antibiotics from blackwater previously treated by an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor. A hybrid system of constructed wetlands was used, comprised of a horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland with a total volume of 0.60 m³ followed by a vertical subsurface flow constructed wetland with a total volume of 0.20 m³. Three different hydraulic retention times were comparatively tested (1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 days for the horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland, and 1.1, 0.9, and 0.4 days for the vertical subsurface flow constructed wetland) in four distinct stages. The plant species used was Canna x generalis. The results from this study demonstrate the potential of constructed wetlands as a suitable technology for post-treatment of segregated domestic wastewater (anaerobically-digested blackwater). Efficient reduction of COD, BOD₅, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus (74, 93, 50, and 61%, respectively) was achieved, with a hydraulic retention time of 3.0 and 1.1 days for horizontal and vertical subsurface flow constructed wetland, respectively (stage IV). The presence of ciprofloxacin was confirmed by chromatographic and mass spectrometric analysis in an average concentration of 442.6 ng.L^-1 at the inflow of the horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland, but was not observed at the outflow.

Antibiotics and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) in groundwater: A global review on dissemination, sources, interactions, environmental and human health risks

The discovery and evolution of antibiotics for humans and animals are among the most significant milestones of the 20th century. However, antibiotics play a significant role in the induction and dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in groundwater that has recently become the primary environmental concern. They are administrated to humans and animals on a large scale and are persistent in the environment. Long term impacts of antibiotics in the ecological environment are not still clearly understood, and their occurrence and consequences have become an important research topic worldwide. The hotspot reservoirs of antibiotics and ARGs include medical facilities, livestock farming, aquaculture, landfills, on-site sanitation systems, sewage, and wastewater treatment plants. Our meta-analysis demonstrated that antibiotics, including ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, erythromycin, and tetracycline were found at high concentrations while sulfonamide and tetracycline ARGs were more prevalent in groundwater. Moreover, the highest reported concentrations of targeted antibiotics were used to calculate hazard quotient (HQ) and risk quotient (RQ) in global groundwater bodies to estimate environmental and human health risks, respectively. Due to limited available ecotoxicity data, RQ and HQ can only be calculated for a few antibiotics in groundwater. The risk assessment of antibiotics demonstrated that antibiotics with their current groundwater levels pose no human health risks, whereas only ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, flumequine, and sulfamethoxazole revealed moderate to low risks to aquatic species. The occurrence of ARGs and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARBs) in groundwater is also not likely to pose human health risk but consumption of groundwater contaminated with ARGs and ARBs might contribute to the development of antibiotic resistance in humans. The present review also sheds light on the relationship between ARGs, antibiotics, microbial communities, and environmental factors in groundwater, and reported a significant correlation between them. It also addresses prospects for future outlooks into further areas of relevant research.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products in a Brazilian wetland of international importance: Occurrence and environmental risk assessment

Despite the fact that the occurrence of emerging contaminants in the environment has become frequent in recent decades, the seasonal dynamics of contaminants in different environmental compartments are little studied in protected areas influenced by effluent discharges. In this study, the seasonal and spatial occurrence of 33 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) was investigated in surface waters and sediments from Anil and Bacanga rivers (northeast of Brazil). The studied area is located within a Wetland of International Importance by Ramsar Convention (Amazon Estuary and its Mangroves). Sample preparation was carried out using solid-phase extraction and QuEChERS, for water and sediment samples, respectively and all determinations were performed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Eleven PPCPs were detected in water samples and 14 in sediments. In aqueous samples, caffeine was the most occurring compound reaching 13,798 ng L^-1. In addition, high levels of acetaminophen, ibuprofen, sulfamethoxazole, carbamazepine and diclofenac were also observed. In the sediment samples, triclocarban, benzophenone-3, ketoconazole and methylparaben were also detected. The spatial and temporal distribution of the assessed molecules indicates urbanization and anthropic activities as relevant sources of PPCPs in the region. Moreover, the levels of acetaminophen, caffeine, diclofenac, ibuprofen, benzophenone-3, triclosan and triclocarban measured within the Ramsar site pose a high risk to aquatic and terrestrial organisms. These findings indicate potential threats to the allegedly protected biodiversity and, therefore, urgent actions are needed to effectively protect this unique and vulnerable area.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products in a drinking water resource of Yangtze River Delta Ecology and Greenery Integration Development Demonstration Zone in China: Occurrence and human health risk assessment

The occurrence, partition, and human health risk of thirteen pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have been investigated in surface water, overlying water, pore water and sediment samples from Dianshan Lake of Yangtze River Delta Ecology and Greenery Integration Development Demonstration Zone in China. PPCPs were ubiquitous in aqueous phase and sediments from Dianshan Lake. Sulfamethazine (SMZ) was dominated in surface water and overlying water, while ketoprofen (KPF) was rich in sediment. The total concentration of PPCPs ranged from 0.38-85.27 ng/L, 24.26-130.03 ng/L and 5.39-149.84 μg/kg in surface water, overlying water and sediment, respectively, which were in middle levels compared with these reported in other aquatic environment in China. Naproxen (NPX), sulfadimethoxine (SDM), sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and sulfamethazine (SMZ) in surface water showed a relatively higher level in lake side than those in lake center suggesting that a mixed containment source of human- and animal-derived from the areas around lake. The significant season variations of most PPCPs were mainly attributed to their usage, water temperature and dilution effect. The partition behaviors of PPCPs in sediment-overlying water and sediment-pore water system were mainly affected by their logK_ow values, and showed weak correlation with total organic carbon (TOC) content in sediment and molecular weights of PPCPs. Preliminary results indicated that PPCPs in Dianshan Lake have not posed a high risk to human health by exposure to drinking water for all age groups. Nevertheless, their potential to cause the mixture toxicity and resistance genes cannot be neglected. This work will contribute to the clear picture of PPCPs contamination in drinking water source in the Demonstration Zone, and provide reliable and simple-to-use information to regulators on the exposure and risk levels of PPCPs, as well as recommendations for future research.

Chiral molecularly imprinted polymeric stir bar sorptive extraction for naproxen enantiomer detection in PPCPs

Chiral micropollutant analysis in pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) is interesting but challenging. We firstly developed a series of chiral molecularly imprinted polymeric (CMIP) stir bar sorptive extraction coatings by combining a chiral template with chiral functional monomers via a click reaction for naproxen enantiomer analysis in PPCPs. Heterochiral selectivity was observed in the molecule recognition of the CMIP coatings, which demonstrated good adsorption capability for the chiral template and its structurally similar chiral compounds. The coatings also exhibited excellent enrichment capability for chiral analytes in an aqueous matrix. The surface morphology and pore structure of the CMIP coatings were characterized. The molecular interactions between the chiral template and chiral functional monomer were investigated through UV-vis spectroscopy and theoretical calculations to prove the effective interactions existing in the heterochiral MIPs. The CMIP coatings were used to enrich naproxen enantiomers in chiral drug and environmental water samples, and satisfactory recoveries (83.98 %-118.88 %) with a relative standard deviation of 3.49 %-13.08 % were achieved. The heterochiral imprinted coating-based method provided a sensitive, selective, and effective enrichment strategy for chiral micropollutant analysis in PPCPs. This technique is critical for chiral molecule recognition and enantiomer analysis in complex samples.

Preparation of poly(4-vinylpyridine)-functionalized magnetic Al-MOF for the removal of naproxen from aqueous solution

In this work, a novel poly(4-vinylpyridine)-functionalized magnetic Al-MOF (Al-MOF-Fe₃O₄@P4VP) was synthesized successfully as an adsorbent for the adsorption of naproxen from aqueous solution. The resulting adsorbent was characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), BET surface area and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Al-MOF-Fe₃O₄@P4VP had high surface area (123.68 m²/g), porous structure, rough surface and magnetic property. The maximum adsorption capacity of Al-MOF-Fe₃O₄@P4VP for naproxen could reach up to 31.67 mg/g and the adsorption process was well described by the Freundlich isotherm. The adsorption rate of naproxen on Al-MOF-Fe₃O₄@P4VP was very fast and the kinetics could be well modeled by the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorbent exhibited good adsorption ability even after ten adsorption-desorption cycles. Al-MOF-Fe₃O₄@P4VP had the characteristics of high removal efficiency, fast adsorption speed, good reusability and easy separation, making it a novel environment-friendly and effective magnetic nanomaterial in adsorbing naproxen from wastewater.

The Occurrence and Risks of Selected Emerging Pollutants in Drinking Water Source Areas in Henan, China

The occurrence of organic micropollutants (OMPs) in aqueous environments has potential effects on ecological safety and human health. Three kinds of OMPs (namely, pharmaceuticals, ultraviolet (UV) filters and organophosphate esters (OPEs)) in four drinking water source areas in Henan Province of China were analyzed, and their potential risks were evaluated. Among 48 target chemicals, 37 pollutants with total concentrations ranging from 403.0 to 1751.6 ng/L were detected in water, and 13 contaminants with total concentrations from 326.0 to 1465.4 ng/g (dry weight) were observed in sediment. The aqueous pollution levels in Jiangang Reservoir and Shahe Water Source Area were higher than that in Nanwan Reservoir and Baiguishan Reservoir, while the highest total amount of pollutants in sediment was found in Baiguishan Reservoir. Compared with pharmaceuticals and UV filters, OPEs presented higher concentrations in all investigated drinking water source areas. The highest observed concentration was triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO, 865.2 ng/L) in water and tripentyl phosphate (TPeP, 1289.8 ng/g) in sediment. Moreover, the risk quotient (RQ) analysis implies that the determined aqueous contaminants exhibited high risks to algae and invertebrates, whereas moderate risk to fish was exhibited. The health risk assessment of aqueous OMPs by means of the hazard index (HI) indicates that the risks to adults and children were negligible. These observations are expected to provide useful information for the assessment of water quality in drinking water sources in Henan, China.

Distribution and Chemical Analysis of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) in the Environmental Systems: A Review

PPCPs are found almost everywhere in the environment especially at an alarming rate and at very low concentration in the aquatic systems. Many methods-including pressurized hot water extraction (PHWE), pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), and micro-assisted extraction (MAE)-have been employed for their extraction from both surface waters and biota. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) proved to be the best extraction method for these polar, non-volatile, and thermally unstable compounds in water. However, ultrasonic extraction works better for their isolation from sediment because it is cheap and consumes less solvent, even though SPE is preferred as a clean-up method for sediment samples. PPCPs are in groups of-acidic (e.g., diclofenac, ibuprofen, naproxen), neutral (e.g., caffeine, carbamazepine, fluoxetine), and basic pharmaceuticals, as well as antibiotics and estrogens amongst others. PPCPs which are present in trace levels (ng/L) are more often determined by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolent (HPLC-UV). Of these, LC-MS and LC-MS-MS are mostly employed for the analysis of this class of compounds, though not without a draw-back of matrix effect. GC-MS and GC-MS-MS are considered as alternative cost-effective methods that can also give better results after derivatization.
