Abstract
Styrene butadiene rubber is one of the main constituents of tire tread. During tire life, the tread material undergoes different stresses that impact its structure and chemical composition. Wear particles are then released into the environment as weathered material. To understand their fate, it is important to start with a better characterization of abiotic and biotic degradation of the elastomer material. A multi-disciplinary approach was implemented to study the photo- and thermo- degradation of non-vulcanized SBR films containing 15 w% styrene as well as their potential biodegradation by Rhodoccocus ruber and Gordonia polyisoprenivorans bacterial strains. Each ageing process leads to crosslinking reactions, much surface oxidation of the films and the production of hundreds of short chain compounds. These degradation products present a high level of unsaturation and oxidation and can be released into water to become potential substrates for microorganisms. Both strains were able to degrade from 0.2 to 1.2 % (% ThOD) of the aged SBR film after 30-day incubation while no biodegradation was observed on the pristine material. A 25-75 % decrease in the signal intensity of water extractable compounds was observed, suggesting that biomass production was linked to the consumption of low-molecular-weight degradation products. These results evidence the positive impact of abiotic degradation on the biodegradation process of styrene butadiene rubber.

Abstract
To gain better understanding of how the transition to electric vehicles affects road dust (RD) composition, and potential health and environmental risks, it is crucial to analyze the chemical composition of RD and identify its sources. Sources of RD include wear of tire tread (TT), brake wear (BW) and road wear (RW). A relevant component of RD are tire and road wear particles (TRWPs). This literature review compiles data on the chemical bulk composition of RD sources, RD in Asia, Europe and North America and TRWP as a RD component. The focus is on elements such as Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn. Although the comparability of global RD data is limited due to differences in sampling and analytical methods, no significant differences in the composition from Asia, Europe, and North America were found for most of the investigated elements studied, except for Cd, Co, and V. Sources of RD were analyzed using elemental markers. On average TT, BW, and RW contributed 3 %, 1 %, and 96 %, respectively. The highest concentrations of TT (9 %) and BW (2 %) were observed in the particle size fraction of RD ≤ 10 μm. It is recommended that these results be verified using additional marker compounds. The chemical composition of TRWPs from different sources revealed that (i) TRWPs isolated from a tunnel dust sample are composed of 31 % TT, 6 % BW, and 62 % RW, and (ii) test material from tire test stands show a similar TT content but different chemical bulk composition likely because e.g., of missing BW. Therefore, TRWPs from test stands need to be chemically characterized prior to their use in hazard testing to validate their representativeness.

Abstract
The antioxidant N-(1,3-Dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD) and its oxidized quinone product 6PPD-quinone (6PPD-Q) in rubber have attracted attention due to the ecological risk that they pose. Both 6PPD and 6PPD-Q have been detected in various environments that humans cohabit. However, to date, a clear understanding of the biotransformation of 6PPD-Q and a potential biomarker for exposure in humans are lacking. To address this issue, this study presents a comprehensive analysis of the extensive biotransformation of 6PPD-Q across species, encompassing both in vitro and in vivo models. We have tentatively identified 17 biotransformation metabolites in vitro, 15 in mice in vivo, and confirmed the presence of two metabolites in human urine samples. Interestingly, different biotransformation patterns were observed across species. Through semiquantitative analysis based on peak areas, we found that almost all 6PPD-Q underwent biotransformation within 24 h of exposure in mice, primarily via hydroxylation and subsequent glucuronidation. This suggests a rapid metabolic processing of 6PPD-Q in mammals, underscoring the importance of identifying effective biomarkers for exposure. Notably, monohydroxy 6PPD-Q and 6PPD-Q-O-glucuronide were consistently the most predominant metabolites across our studies, highlighting monohydroxy 6PPD-Q as a potential key biomarker for epidemiological research. These findings represent the first comprehensive data set on 6PPD-Q biotransformation in mammalian systems, offering insights into the metabolic pathways involved and possible exposure biomarkers.

Abstract
N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD) and its derivative 6PPDQ have been detected in various environmental media, with harmful consequences for both ecosystems and biological health. However, the distribution of 6PPD and 6PPDQ in areas around e-waste recycling areas is currently unknown. We collected soil and dust samples from areas around a traditional e-waste recycling zone, an emerging recycling park, and a reference area. Higher levels of 6PPD were found in dust from residential areas around the traditional e-waste recycling zone compared to the reference area (median: 108.99 versus 33.57 ng/g, P < 0.01). Lower levels of 6PPDQ were detected in dust samples from around the emerging e-waste recycling parks compared to traditional e-waste recycling zones (median: 15.40 versus 46.37 ng/g, P < 0.05). The median concentrations of 6PPD and 6PPDQ were higher in the dust samples than in the soil samples (P < 0.001). The concentrations of 6PPD and 6PPDQ in the dust and soil varied seasonally, with the highest total concentrations occurring in the winter. Results from a multiple linear regression analysis indicate that 6PPDQ is negatively correlated with temperature and positively correlated with 6PPD, O3, and radiation. This study confirms that e-waste is a potential contributor to 6PPD and 6PPDQ. In residential areas, 6PPD and 6PPDQ are more likely to accumulate in dust than in soil. The emerging e-waste recycling parks have greatly improved the local 6PPDQ pollution situation. Further studies are necessary to understand the distribution of newly found substances in various settings.

Abstract
N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD) is commonly used in rubber compounds as antioxidants to protect against degradation from heat, oxygen, and ozone exposure. This practice extends the lifespan of rubber products, including tires, by preventing cracking, aging, and deterioration. However, the environmental consequences of waste generated during rubber product use, particularly the formation of 6PPD-quinone (6PPD-Q) through the reaction of 6PPD with ozone, have raised significant concerns due to their detrimental effects on ecosystems. Extensive research has revealed the widespread occurrence of 6PPD and its derivate 6PPD-Q in various environmental compartments, including air, water, and soil. The emerging substance of 6PPD-Q has been shown to pose acute mortality and long-term hazards to aquatic and terrestrial organisms at concentrations below environmentally relevant levels. Studies have demonstrated toxic effects of 6PPD-Q on a range of organisms, including zebrafish, nematodes, and mammals. These effects include neurobehavioral changes, reproductive dysfunction, and digestive damage through various exposure pathways. Mechanistic insights suggest that mitochondrial stress, DNA adduct formation, and disruption of lipid metabolism contribute to the toxicity induced by 6PPD-Q. Recent findings of 6PPD-Q in human samples, such as blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid, underscore the importance of further research on the public health and toxicological implications of these compounds. The distribution, fate, biological effects, and underlying mechanisms of 6PPD-Q in the environment highlight the urgent need for additional research to understand and address the environmental and health impacts of these compounds.

Abstract
N,N'-substituted p-phenylenediamines (PPDs) are widely used antioxidants in rubber tires, which could be released and accumulated in road dusts with rubber tires wear. As ozonation product of N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD), 6PPD-quinone (6PPD-Q) exhibited higher toxicity to coho salmon. However, studies on their environmental behaviors are still limited. Road dust is the major medium PPDs exist, which significantly affects the levels of PPDs in other mediums, especially surface water and particulate matter. In this study, road dust samples were collected in 55 major cities of China to explore the distribution characteristics of PPDs and 6PPD-Q. The concentrations of total PPDs (ΣPPDs) and 6PPD-Q in urban trunk road dust samples were in the ranges of 7.90-727 and 3.00-349 ng/g, with median concentrations of 68 and 49 ng/g, respectively. 6PPD and 6PPD-Q are the dominant components in most road dusts. The functional region-dependent pollution characteristics of PPDs and 6PPD-Q give the first finding that urban tunnel road was the highly polluted region, followed by urban trunk roads. Suburban road dusts had a lower pollution level. Moreover, the estimated daily intake (EDI) of PPDs and 6PPD-Q for children was much higher than adults.

Abstract
N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine-quinone (6PPD-quinone) has received extensive attention due to its ubiquitous distribution and potential toxicity. However, the distribution characteristics of 6PPD-quinone in dust from e-waste recycling areas and the consequential health risks to children are unclear. A total of 183 dust samples were collected from roads (n = 40), homes (n = 91), and kindergartens (n = 52) in Guiyu (the e-waste-exposed group) and Haojiang (the reference group) from 2019 to 2021. The results show that the concentrations of 6PPD-quinone in kindergarten and house dust from the exposed group were significantly higher than those from the reference group (P < 0.001). These findings show that e-waste may be another potential source of 6PPD-quinone, in addition to rubber tires. The exposure risk of 6PPD-quinone in children was assessed using their daily intake. The daily intake of 925 kindergarten children was calculated using the concentration of 6PPD-quinone in kindergarten dust. The daily intake of 6PPD-quinone via ingestion was approximately five orders of magnitude higher than via inhalation. Children in the exposed group had a higher exposure risk to 6PPD-quinone than the reference group. A higher daily intake of 6PPD-quinone from kindergarten dust was associated with a lower BMI and a higher frequency of influenza and diarrhea in children. This study reports the distribution of 6PPD-quinone in an e-waste recycling town and explores the associated health risks to children.

Abstract
Drivers commonly navigate their vehicles at moderate speeds in proximity to traffic lights. In this study, road dust samples were collected in the vicinity of traffic lights, as well as at a taxi stand (TS) situated between traffic lights, with considerations given to both forward direction (FD) and backward direction (BD). The characterization of tire wear particles (TWPs) in the road dust was meticulously conducted based on particle size. Notably, tire-road wear particles (TRWPs) were conspicuously absent in samples surpassing 500 μm. Furthermore, TRWPs comprised less than 1% of identified particles in the road dust samples of 212-500 μm, with their origin traceable to heavy vehicles rather than passenger cars. The abundance of TRWPs from heavy vehicles exhibited marked variations, with heightened prevalence in the TS and BD samples as opposed to the FD sample. For the samples smaller than 212 μm, the composition of natural rubber (NR) in TWPs demonstrated a diminishing trend with escalating particle size. Conversely, the composition of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) exhibited an upward trajectory independent of the sampling site. The NR composition ratio in TWPs followed the order: TS (17-55%) > FD (17-47%) > BD (13-36%), while the SBR composition ratio exhibited the sequence: BD (62-86%) > FD (48-79%) > TS (24-70%). The TWP concentrations in road dust obtained from the TS (0.35-0.82%) were discernibly lower than those in the FD (0.54-1.77%) and BD (0.61-1.29%) samples. Specifically, the average TWP concentrations in road dust samples, falling within the size range of 20-212 μm, were 0.45%, 1.06%, and 0.91% for the TS, FD, and BD samples, respectively. These concentrations were lower than the corresponding values observed in samples collected from a bus stop.

Abstract
N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine-quinone (6PPDQ) has raised significant concerns due to its widespread distribution and high toxicity to aquatic organisms. However, the cardiac developmental toxicity of 6PPDQ and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we observed no notable alterations in heart morphology or embryo survival in zebrafish embryos exposed to 6PPDQ (0.2-2000 μg/L) up to 3 days post-fertilization (dpf). However, concentrations at 2 μg/L or higher induced cardiac dysfunctions, leading to lethal effects at later stages (6-8 dpf). We further found that the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) inhibitor CH22351 attenuated 6PPDQ-induced cardiac dysfunctions, implicating the involvement of AHR signal pathway. Moreover, 6PPDQ exposure led to an overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and an upregulation of genes associated with oxidative stress (sod1, sod2, and nrf2a). This was accompanied by an increase in oxidative DNA damage and the induction of p53-dependent extrinsic apoptosis. Co-exposure to the ROS scavenger N-acetylcysteine effectively counteracted the DNA damage and apoptosis induced by 6PPDQ. Importantly, inhibition of AHR or its downstream target cyp1b1 attenuated 6PPDQ-induced oxidative stress, DNA damage, and apoptosis. In conclusion, our results provide evidence that 6PPDQ induces oxidative stress through the AHR/cyp1b1 signaling pathway, leading to DNA damage and extrinsic apoptosis, ultimately resulting in cardiac dysfunction.

Abstract
This study aims to examine tire and road wear particle (TRWP) emissions under realistic conditions in order to provide some valuable insights into understanding their sources and fate in the environment. TRWP emissions were evaluated with a fully instrumented vehicle driving on five representative road types: urban, ring road, suburban, highway, and rural. Multiple vehicle dynamic variables were recorded to assess the factors influencing these emissions. For the first time, emitted particles were collected on filters and analyzed by means of pyrolysis coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to determine the polymeric content of tires, in specifically quantifying styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and butadiene rubber (BR) pyrolytic markers. The measurements obtained from the five road types revealed similar size distributions for SBR + BR emissions, with maxima found in the (ultra)fine fraction (< 0.39 µm). Upon applying an SBR + BR-to-TRWP conversion factor, (ultra)fine fraction TRWP emissions proved to be the highest for suburban (64 ± 5 µg/km), followed by highway, urban, ring road and rural routes. The output represents up to 480 tons of TRWP per year emitted in the EU27, thus suggesting a widely impregnated atmospheric compartment capable of threatening human health. Furthermore, an analysis of variables revealed that acceleration, tire constraints, and constant sustained driving factors had specific impacts on TRWP emissions.

Abstract
Substantially polluted tunnel wash water (TWW) is produced during road tunnel maintenance. Previous literature has reported the presence of trace elements and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, it was hypothesized that other organic pollutants are present, and more knowledge is needed to prevent environmental harm. This study reveals for the first time the presence of four short- and 17 long-chained per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), three benzothiazoles (BTHs), six benzotriazoles (BTRs), four bisphenols, and four benzophenones in TWW from a Norwegian road tunnel over a period of three years. Concentrations of PAHs, PFASs, BTHs, and BTRs were higher than previously reported in e.g., road runoff and municipal wastewater. Trace elements and PAHs were largely particulate matter associated, while PFASs, BTHs, BTRs, bisphenols, and benzophenones were predominantly dissolved. 26 of the determined contaminants were classified as persistent, mobile, and toxic (PMT) and are of special concern. It was recommended that regulations for TWW quality should be expanded to include PMT contaminants (such as PFPeA, PFBS, BTR, and 4-OH-BzP) and markers of pollution (like 2-M-BTH, 2-OH-BTH, and 2-S-BTH from tire wear particles). These findings highlight the need to treat TWW before discharge into the environment, addressing both, particulate matter associated and dissolved contaminants.

Abstract
The p-phenylenediamine antioxidants (PPDs) have been widely detected in various dust samples. Nevertheless, the knowledge on occurrence of their environmental transformation products, PPD-derived quinones (PPDQs), in indoor dust remains limited. In this study, indoor dust samples (n = 97) were collected from Hangzhou, China, and analyzed for PPDs and PPDQs. Results showed that nine PPDs were detected in indoor dust samples, with the total concentrations of 1.7-223 ng/g. N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD, mean 17 ng/g) was the predominant PPDs in indoor dust, followed by N, N'-di(o-tolyl)-p-phenylenediamine (DTPD, 8.6 ng/g) and N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-(p-tolyl)-p-phenylenediamine (DMTPD, 4.7 ng/g). Five PPDQs were detected in indoor dust samples. Among detected PPDQs, 6PPDQ (14 ng/g, 0.33-82 ng/g) had the highest mean concentration, followed by DTPDQ (5.9 ng/g, < LOD-31 ng/g) and DPPDQ (2.2 ng/g, < LOD-11 ng/g). We also estimated the daily intake (DI) of PPDs and PPDQs through indoor dust ingestion. Infants had higher mean DIs of PPDs and PPDQs than children and adults. Notably, to our knowledge, this study first reports the occurrence of three novel PPDs and four novel PPDQs in indoor dust samples. More studies are needed to reveal the potential human health risks of exposure to these newly identified chemicals.

Abstract
Tire and road wear particles (TRWP) resulting from tire abrasion while driving raise concerns due to their potential contribution to aquatic toxicity. Our study aimed to assess cryogenically milled tire tread (CMTT) particle toxicity, used as a proxy for TRWP, and associated chemicals to fish using two Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) cell lines representing the gill (RTgill-W1) and the intestinal (RTgutGC) epithelium. CMTT toxicity was evaluated through several exposure pathways, including direct contact, leaching, and digestion, while also assessing the impact of particle aging. Following OECD TG249, cell viability was assessed after 24 h acute exposure using a multiple-endpoint assay indicative of cell metabolic activity, membrane integrity and lysosome integrity. In vitro EC50 values for the fish cell lines exceeded river TRWP concentrations (2.02 g/L and 4.65 g/L for RTgill-W1 and RTgutGC cell lines, respectively), and were similar to in vivo LC50 values estimated at 6 g/L. Although toxicity was mainly driven by the leaching of tire-associated chemicals, the presence of the particles contributed to the overall toxicity by inducing a continuous leaching, highlighting the importance of considering combined exposure scenarios. Aging and digestion conditions were also found to mediate CMTT toxicity. Thermooxidation resulted in a decreased chemical leaching and toxicity, while in vitro digestion under mimicked gastrointestinal conditions increased leaching and toxicity. Specific chemicals, especially Zn, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, 1,3-diphenylguanidine, and N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD) were identified as contributors to the overall toxicity. Although 6PPD-quinone was detected in CMTT digestate, cytotoxicity assays with RTgill-W1 and RTgutGC cell lines showed no toxicity up to 6 mg/L, supporting the notion of a specific mode of action of this chemical. This study provides insights into the toxicological mechanisms induced by tire particles and their associated chemicals and can help in the evaluation of potential risks to aquatic life associated with TRWP.

Abstract
Tire wear particles (TWPs) are garnering increasing attention due to their potential adverse environmental impacts. However, precisely ascertaining TWPs content is challenging due to the complexity and variability of the tire components used in the environment, indicating that more reliable methods to accurately determine TWPs are necessary. In this study, driving school grounds were used as a case study to ascertain an appropriate and reliable method to determine TWPs levels based on a comprehensive comparison between different analytical results using styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD), and zinc (Zn) as analytical markers. Thermogravimetric analysis-Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (TGA-GC-MS) method reliability using SBR was verified and applied to measure TWPs levels on driving school grounds. By reliably converting SBR content to TWPs content, the average TWPs content on driving school grounds was measured at 190.13 ± 101.89 mg/g. The highest TWPs content was 281.83 ± 171.44 mg/g under the reverse stall parking driving programs, while the slope start and stop driving programs was lower at 208.36 ± 124.11 mg/g. Our findings highlight the importance of accurately determining TWPs content within specific environments while comprehensively exploring associated patterns of change to better understand the environmental risks of TWPs.

Abstract
The rapid and sensitive determination of antioxidant N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-henylenediamine (6-PPD) in the environment is crucial for early intervention to prevent its adverse effects. Here, a reliable electrochemical sensor based on a N-C mediated γ-Mo2N nanocomposite (γ-Mo2N@N-C) modified carbon paste electrode (CPE) was developed and applied for selective and sensitive determination of 6-PPD. Benefiting from the superior stability and faster electron diffusion coefficient, the peak current responded to 6-PPD on the sensor linearly over a concentration range from 5 × 10-8 mol L-1 to 1.0 × 10-5 mol L-1 with a detection limit of 1.67 × 10-8 mol L-1 (4.48 ng mL-1). Moreover, the sensor maintained good anti-interference ability in the determination of 6-PPD in soil samples from different regions in Zhengzhou City. Furthermore, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with kinetics analysis proved that the enhanced basicity of the γ-Mo2N@N-C facilitated the deprotonation of 6-PPD, with the preferred orientation facet of (200) in γ-Mo2N playing a vital role in inducing the dissociation of 6-PPD, thereby improving the sensor's response. Such an electrochemical sensor, with its good stability and superior sensitivity, has the potential to be applied for real-time evaluation and monitoring of environmental pollutants.

Abstract
Numerous toxic substances are directly and indirectly discharged by humans into water bodies, causing distress to the organisms living on it. 6PPD, an amino antioxidant from tires reacts with ozone to form 6PPD-Q, which has garnered global attention due to its lethal nature to various organisms. This review aims to provide an understanding of the sources, transformation, and fate of 6PPD-Q in water and the current knowledge on its effects on aquatic organisms. Furthermore, we discuss research gaps pertaining to the mechanisms by which 6PPD-Q acts within fish bodies. Previous studies have demonstrated the ubiquitous presence of 6PPD-Q in the environment, including air, water, and soil. Moreover, this compound has shown high lethality to certain fish species while not affecting others. Toxicological studies have revealed its impact on the nervous system, intestinal barrier function, cardiac function, equilibrium loss, and oxidative stress in various fish species. Additionally, exposure to 6PPD-Q has led to organ injury, lipid accumulation, and cytokine production in C. elegans and mice. Despite studies elucidating the lethal dose and effects of 6PPD-Q in fish species, the underlying mechanisms behind these symptoms remain unclear. Future studies should prioritize investigating the mechanisms underlying the lethality of 6PPD-Q in fish species to gain a better understanding of its potential effects on different organisms.

Abstract
Tire and road wear particles (TRWP) are generated in large quantity by automobile traffic on roads but their way of degradation in the environment is largely unclear. Laboratory experiments were performed on the effect of elevated temperature (simulating 2-3 years), sunlight exposure (simulating 0.5 years) and mechanical stress on the physical properties and chemical composition of TRWP and of cryo-milled tire tread (CMTT). No significant effects were observed of the applied mechanical stress on mean properties of pristine particles. After sunlight exposure up to 40 % in mass were lost from the TRWP, likely due to the loss of mineral incrustations from their surface. The chemical composition of TRWP and CMTT was characterized by determining 27 compounds, antioxidants (phenylene diamines), vulcanization agents (benzothiazoles and guanidines) and their transformation products (TPs). Extractables of TRWP (580-850 μg/g) were dominated by TPs, namely benzothiazolesulfonic acid (BTSA). CMTT showed much higher amounts of extractables (4600 μg/g) which were dominated by parent chemicals such as N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (6-PPD), diphenylguanidine (DPG) and mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT). Sunlight exposure affected the amount of extractables more strongly than elevated temperature, for TRWP (-45 % vs -20 %) and CMTT (-80 % vs -25 %) and provoked a clear shift from parent compounds to their TPs. After sunlight exposure extractables of TRWP were dominated by BTSA and DPG. Sunlight exposure drastically reduced the 6-PPD amount extracted from both, TRWP and CMTT (-93 %, -98 %), while its quinone (6-PPDQ) increased by around 1 % of the 6-PPD decrease, only. For many TPs, concentration in leachates were higher than in extracts, indicating ongoing transformation of their parent compounds during leaching. These results highlight that abiotic aging of TRWP leads to strong changes in their chemical composition which affect their particle properties and are of relevance for the environmental exposure to tire-related chemicals.

Abstract
The generation of tire wear is an inevitable outcome of the friction between the road and the tire which is necessary for the safe operation of vehicles on roadways. Tire wear particles form agglomerates with road surface material. These agglomerates are called tire and road wear particles (TRWP). Due to their persistence in the environmental compartments and their potentially harmful effects, research on preventative and end-of-pipe mitigation strategies for TRWP is essential. The major goal of this study is to summarize and assess the state of the art in science and technology of mitigation measures for TRWP as the basis for further research activities. Approximately 500 literature sources were found and analyzed in terms of the efficiency, maturity, implementation, and impact of the mitigation measures. Generally, technological and management mitigation measures to reduce the generation of TRWP are beneficial since they prevent TRWP from entering the environment. Once released into environmental compartments, their mobility and dispersion would increase, making removing the particles more challenging. Technological and management mitigation measures after the release of TRWP into the environment are mainly well established in industrialized countries. Street cleaning and wastewater technologies show good removal efficiencies for TRWP and microplastics. In any case, no individual measure can solely solve the TRWP issue, but a set of combined measures could potentially be more effective. The absence of fully-developed and standardized methods for tire abrasion testing and measuring TRWP in the environment makes it impossible to reliably compare the tire abrasion behavior of different tire types, determine thresholds, and control mitigation actions. Field tests and pilot studies are highly needed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the abatement measures under real conditions.

Abstract
Traffic pollution has been linked to high levels of metals and organic contaminants in road-side soils, largely due to abrasion of tires, brake pads and the road surface. Although several studies have demonstrated correlations between different pollutants and various traffic variables, they mainly focused on roads with medium to high traffic density (>30,000 vehicles per day). In this study we have focused on investigating tire wear particles and road-related metals (zinc, copper, lead, chromium, nickel, and the metalloid arsenic) in the soils of low traffic roads in rural areas (650-14,250 vehicles per day). Different explanatory factors were investigated, such as traffic density, speed, % heavy vehicles, organic matter content, annual precipitation, soil types and roadside slope profiles. The results show high levels of tire wear particles, from 2000 to 26,400 mg/kg (0.2-2.6 % tire wear in d.w. soil), which is up to five times higher compared to previously reported values in roadside soils of high traffic density areas. A weak but significant correlation was found between tire wear particles, traffic speed and the annual precipitation. No significant relationship was found between tire wear particles metals. The concentrations of metals were comparable to previous studies of high traffic areas of Norway, as well as both urban and rural soils in other countries. For the metals, all factors together explained 45 % of the variation observed, with traffic density (11 %) and organic matter content (10 %) as the most important single variables. The analysis of tire wear particles in soils using Pyrolysis Gas chromatography Mass Spectrometry is challenging, and the results presented demonstrate the need for pretreatment to remove organic matter from the samples before analysis.

Abstract
Roadway particles (RP) that can be collected with on-vehicle system, consist of a mixture of Tire and road wear particles (TRWP) with other traffic-derived particles (exhaust or non-exhaust) and/or biogenic compounds and represent a significant source of xenobiotics, susceptible to reach the different environmental compartments. The study of the RP fate is thus a major challenge to tackle in order to understand their degradation and impact. They offer a variety of carbon sources potentially usable by microorganisms, ranging from the tire-derived plasticizers, vulcanizing agents, protective agents and their transformation products, to other traffic, road and environmental-derived contaminants. A multi-analytical approach was implemented to characterize RP and study their biodegradation. Kinetics of RP extractions were monitored during 21 days in water, methanol, acetone and chloroform to identify leaching and extractable compounds and monitor the particle composition. The results confirmed that hundreds of readily leachable chemicals can be extracted from RP directly into water according to a dynamic process with time while additional poorly soluble compounds remain in the particles. Mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS and GC-MS) allowed us to propose 296 putative compounds using an extensive rubber database. The capacity of 6 bacterial strains, belonging to Rhodococcus, Pseudomonas and Streptomyces genera, to biodegrade RP was then evaluated over 14 days of incubation. The selected strains were able to grow on RP using various substrates. Elastomer monitoring by 1H NMR revealed a significant 12 % decrease of the extractable SBR fraction when the particles were incubated with Rhodococcus ruber. After incubation, the biodegradation of 171 compounds among leachable and extractable compounds was evaluated. Fatty acids and alkanes from rubber plasticizers and paraffin waxes were the most degraded putative compounds by the six strains tested, reaching 75 % of biodegradation for some of them.

Abstract
N-(1,3-Dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6-PPD) is a widely used antioxidant in tire rubber known to enter the aquatic environment via road runoff. The associated transformation product (TP) 6-PPD quinone (6-PPDQ) causes extreme acute toxicity in some fish species (e.g., coho salmon). To interpret the species-specific toxicity, information about biotransformation products of 6-PPDQ would be relevant. This study investigated toxicokinetics of 6-PPD and 6-PPDQ in the zebrafish embryo (ZFE) model. Over 96 h of exposure, 6-PPD and 6-PPDQ accumulated in the ZFE with concentration factors ranging from 140 to 2500 for 6-PPD and 70 to 220 for 6-PPDQ. A total of 22 TPs of 6-PPD and 12 TPs of 6-PPDQ were tentatively identified using liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry. After 96 h of exposure to 6-PPD, the TPs of 6-PPD comprised 47% of the total peak area (TPA), with 4-hydroxydiphenylamine being the most prominent in the ZFE. Upon 6-PPDQ exposure, >95% of 6-PPDQ taken up in the ZFE was biotransformed, with 6-PPDQ + O + glucuronide dominating (>80% of the TPA). Among other TPs of 6-PPD, a reactive N-phenyl-p-benzoquinone imine was found. The knowledge of TPs of 6-PPD and 6-PPDQ from this study may support biotransformation studies in other organisms.

Abstract
The impact of microplastics (MPs, plastic particles ≤5 mm) on ecosystems is of great concern. Road surfaces represent a significant source of MPs where plastic fragments are physically and chemically reduced to MPs. However, the literature lacks information on fragmentation tendencies below 11 μm. This study aimed to characterize the occurrence of MPs in road dust in different size fractions down to 1.1 μm. Road dust was collected at five sites near a major road in Kusatsu city, Japan, and partitioned by size into 13 fractions (1.1-850 μm). The coarser fractions accounted for a greater proportion of the dust. The percentage of organic matter, determined by loss on ignition, increased as the fractions became finer. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to quantify 12 types of polymers in each fraction. The dust was found to contain nine types of MP, namely, polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinylchloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS), styrene/butadiene rubber (SBR), acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene resin (ABS), polycarbonate (PC), polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), and polyamide 66 (PA66). The total MP concentration in road dust particles by particle size fraction (concentrationf) began to increase from the 125-250 μm fraction and remained elevated in finer fractions down to 1.1 μm, indicating that MPs in the road dust micronized to at least 1.1 μm. However, for individual polymer types, the tendency for concentrationf to increase or decrease with particle size fraction varied: the concentrationf of some polymers, such as PE and PVC, remained elevated in fractions down to 1.1 μm; the concentrationf of SBR, a rubber-MP, showed a stable or decreasing trend in fractions of 7.0-11 μm and finer. Particles of PE, PVC, and some other plastics might become increasingly finer, even down to 1.1 μm. Further research is needed to understand the comminution limits of these polymers under pertinent environmental conditions.

Abstract
Heavy port transportation networks are increasingly considered as significant contributors of PM2.5 pollution compared to vessels in recent decades. In addition, evidence points to the non-exhaust emission of port traffic as the real driver. This study linked PM2.5 concentrations to varied locations and traffic fleet characteristics in port area through filter sampling. The coupled emission ratio-positive matrix factorisation (ER-PMF) method resolves source factors by avoiding direct overlap from collinear sources. In the port central and entrance areas, freight delivery activity emissions including vehicle exhaust and non-exhaust particles, as well as induced road dust resuspension, accounted for nearly half of the total contribution (42.5%-49.9%). In particular, the contribution of non-exhaust from denser traffic with high proportion of trucks was competitive and equivalent to 52.3% of that from exhaust. Backward trajectory statistical models further interpreted the notably larger-scale coverage of non-exhaust emissions in the port's central area. The distribution of PM2.5 were interpolated within the scope of the port and nearby urban areas, displaying the potential contribution of non-exhaust within 1.15 μg/m3-4.68 μg/m3, slightly higher than the urban detections reported nearby. This study may provide useful insights into the increasing percentage of non-exhaust from trucks in ports and nearby urban areas and facilitate supplementary data collection on Euro-VII type-approval limit settings.

Abstract
Tire wear compounds N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD) and its derivative 6PPD-quinone have been considered as emerging pollutants and attracted much attention recently. As an antioxidant and antiozonant widely used, 6PPD would be released during the production or use of rubber-related products. Because of the mass production and wide use of rubber-related products, 6PPD and 6PPD-quinone have been identified to be ubiquitous in the environment. In this study, we firstly reviewed the current available literature on the analytical procedures, concentrations and distribution of 6PPD and 6PPD-quinone, and then investigated the potential toxic effects of these two compounds on aquatic organisms. Current studies have been mainly focused on the occurrence of 6PPD and 6PPD-quinone in dust and water, while available information on atmosphere, soil, sediments and organisms is limited. The fate and distribution of 6PPD and 6PPD-quinone would be influenced by environmental factors such as temperature, illumination, and storm events, etc. Although 6PPD and 6PPD-quinone have potential adverse effects on aquatic organisms, and 6PPD-quinone has species-specific toxicity, toxicological mechanisms of these compounds are still unclear. Based on the review and analysis of current studies, some suggestions for future research of 6PPD and 6PPD-quinone are given.

We here report chemical characteristics relevant to the fate and transport of the recently discovered environmental toxicant 6PPD-quinone (2-((4-methylpentan-2-yl)amino)-5-(phenylamino)cyclohexa-2,5-diene-1,4-dione or "6PPDQ"). 6PPDQ is a transformation product of the tire rubber antioxidant 6PPD that is ubiquitous in roadway environments, including atmospheric particulate matter, soils, runoff, and receiving waters, after dispersal from tire rubber use and wear on roadways. The aqueous solubility and octanol-water partitioning coefficient (i.e. log KOW) for 6PPDQ were measured to be 38 ± 10 μg L-1 and 4.30 ± 0.02, respectively. Within the context of analytical measurement and laboratory processing, sorption to various laboratory materials was evaluated, indicating that glass was largely inert but loss of 6PPDQ to other materials was common. Aqueous leaching simulations from tire tread wear particles (TWPs) indicated short term release of ∼5.2 μg 6PPDQ per gram TWP over 6 h under flow-through conditions. Aqueous stability tests observed a slight-to-moderate loss of 6PPDQ over 47 days (26 ± 3% loss) for pH 5, 7 and 9. These measured physicochemical properties suggest that 6PPDQ is generally poorly soluble but fairly stable over short time periods in simple aqueous systems. 6PPDQ can also leach readily from TWPs for subsequent environmental transport, posing high potential for adverse effects in local aquatic environments.

Abstract
Estimates of tyre and brake wear emission factors are presented, derived from data collected from roadside and urban background sites on the premises of the University of Birmingham, located in the UK's second largest city. Size-fractionated particulate matter samples were collected at both sites concurrently in the spring/summer of 2019 and analysed for elemental concentrations and magnetic properties. Using Positive Matrix Factorisation (PMF), three sources were identified in the roadside mass increment of the 1.0-9.9 μm stages of MOUDI impactors located at both sites, namely: brake dust (7.1%); tyre dust (9.6%); and crustal (83%). The large fraction of the mass apportioned to crustal material was suspected to be mainly from a nearby construction site rather than resuspension of road dust. By using Ba and Zn as elemental tracers, brake and tyre wear emission factors were estimated as 7.4 mg/veh.km and 9.9 mg/veh.km, respectively, compared with the PMF-derived equivalent values of 4.4 mg/veh.km and 11 mg/veh.km. Based on the magnetic measurements, an emission factor can be estimated independently for brake dust of 4.7 mg/veh.km. A further analysis was carried out on the concurrently measured roadside increment in the particle number size distribution (10 nm-10 μm). Four factors were identified in the hourly measurements: traffic exhaust nucleation; traffic exhaust solid particles; windblown dust; and an unknown source. The high increment of the windblown dust factor, 3.2 μg/m3, was comparable in magnitude to the crustal factor measured using the MOUDI samples (3.5 μg/m3). The latter's polar plot indicated that this factor was dominated by a large neighbouring construction site. The number emission factors of the exhaust solid particle and exhaust nucleation factors were estimated as 2.8 and 1.9 x 1012/veh.km, respectively.

Abstract
Tire and road wear microplastics (TRWMPs) are one of the main non-exhaust pollutants of motor vehicles, which cause serious environmental and health issues. Here, TRWMPs in PM2.5 samples were collected in a tunnel in urban Xi'an, northwest China, during four periods [I: 7:30-10:30, II: 11:00-14:00, III: 16:30-19:30, IV: 20:00-23:00 local standard time (LST)] in summer of 2019. The chemical components of rubbers, benzothiazoles, phthalates, and amines in TRWMPs were quantified, with a total concentration of 6522 ± 1455 ng m-3 (mean ± standard deviation). Phthalates were predominant in TRWMPs, accounting for 64.8% on average, followed by rubbers (33.2%) and benzothiazoles (1.19%). The diurnal variations of TRWMPs showed the highest concentration in Period III (evening rush hour) and the lowest concentration in Period I (morning rush hour), which were not exactly consistent with the variation of the number of light-duty vehicles passed through the tunnel. The result implied that the number of vehicles might not be the most important contributor to TRWMPs concentration, whereas meteorological variables (i.e., precipitation, and relative humidity), vehicle speed, vehicle class, and road cleaning also affected their abundances. The non-carcinogenic risk of TRWMPs in this study was within the international safety threshold, but their carcinogenic risk exceeded the threshold by 2.7-4.6 times, mostly dominated by bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP). This study provides a new basis for the source apportionment of urban PM2.5 in China. The high concentrations and high potential cancer risks of TRWMPs represent the requirement for more efficient measures to control light-duty vehicle emissions.

Abstract
6PPD, a tire rubber antioxidant, poses substantial ecological risks because it can form a highly toxic quinone transformation product (TP), 6PPD-quinone (6PPDQ), during exposure to gas-phase ozone. Important data gaps exist regarding the structures, reaction mechanisms, and environmental occurrence of TPs from 6PPD ozonation. To address these data gaps, gas-phase ozonation of 6PPD was conducted over 24-168 h and ozonation TPs were characterized using high-resolution mass spectrometry. The probable structures were proposed for 23 TPs with 5 subsequently standard-verified. Consistent with prior findings, 6PPDQ (C18H22N2O2) was one of the major TPs in 6PPD ozonation (∼1 to 19% yield). Notably, 6PPDQ was not observed during ozonation of 6QDI (N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-quinonediimine), indicating that 6PPDQ formation does not proceed through 6QDI or associated 6QDI TPs. Other major 6PPD TPs included multiple C18H22N2O and C18H22N2O2 isomers, with presumptive N-oxide, N,N'-dioxide, and orthoquinone structures. Standard-verified TPs were quantified in roadway-impacted environmental samples, with total concentrations of 130 ± 3.2 μg/g in methanol extracts of tire tread wear particles (TWPs), 34 ± 4 μg/g-TWP in aqueous TWP leachates, 2700 ± 1500 ng/L in roadway runoff, and 1900 ± 1200 ng/L in roadway-impacted creeks. These data demonstrate that 6PPD TPs are likely an important and ubiquitous class of contaminants in roadway-impacted environments.

Abstract
Tire wear particles (TWPs), as one of pristine microplastics and non-exhaust emission pollutants, have received extensive attention from scholars worldwide in recent years. In the context of the increasing number of related research results, this study evaluated the current status of TWPs research based on bibliometric analysis and meta-analysis and then discussed in-depth the environmental implications involving transport, transformation of released additives in potential and combined pollution with other microplastics in TWPs researches. Results showed that the regional layout of TWPs research was mainly concentrated in Europe and North America, but with specific countries of the United States, Germany, China, the United Kingdom, and Sweden. Thus, Asia and Africa should timely carry out related research on TWPs considering their large vehicle ownerships. In addition, keyword co-occurrence analysis based on CiteSpace showed that biotoxicity, environmental distribution and human health risks are the current research hotspots. Furthermore, the content of TWPs varied greatly by country and environmental media according to the meta-analysis. It is warranted to be urgently investigated on the distribution, quantitative analysis, migration, additives transformation with toxic effects and control measures of TWPs under the influence of various complex factors such as energy innovation and smart driving. The obtained findings can help understand the developing status of TWPs and then promoting their related investigations in future.

Abstract
The distributions of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) among PM1, PM1-10, PM10-50, and PM50-1000 fractions of the road dust were studied in the western and eastern parts of Moscow, impacted mainly by the road transport and the industrial sector, respectively. The partitioning of PTEs in road dust can provide more precise information on pollution sources and its further interpretation regarding human health risks. The concentrations of PTEs were analyzed by mass and atomic emission inductively coupled plasma spectrometry. Differences in the results between the western and eastern parts of the city were caused by the dissimilarity between traffic and industrial emissions. The source apportionment of the PTEs was carried out using absolute principal component analysis with multiple linear regressions (PCA/APCS-MLR). The contribution from anthropogenic sources was significant to PM1 and PM1-10 particles. In coarser fractions (PM10-50, PM50-1000), it decreased due to the input with the wind-induced resuspension of soil and rock particles. In the eastern part of the city, the accumulation of PTEs (especially Mo, Sb, Cd, Sn, Bi, Co, and As) is the most active in PM1-10, while in the western part, it is most pronounced in PM1 (especially Pb, Cu, Cr, and W) which is associated with differences in the size of particles coming from traffic and industrial sources. In the eastern part of Moscow, in comparison with the western part, the contribution from industrial sources to the accumulation of PTEs in all particle size fractions was higher by 10-30%. In the western part of Moscow, the finest particles PM1 and PM1-10 demonstrate the trend of rising pollution levels with the increase in road size, while in the eastern part of the city, only coarse particles PM50-1000 show the same trend. In the fractions PM1 and PM1-10 of road dust, a significant contribution was made by anthropogenic sources; however, its role decreased in the coarse fractions-PM10-50 and especially in PM50-1000- due to the influence of roadside soils and their parent material.

Abstract
Tire and road wear particles (TRWP) are becoming an important research question with potential risks on ecological system. A comprehensive understanding of their detection and quantification in soils are challenged by the inherent technological inconsistencies, lack of well-set standardized methods, and generalized protocols. Reference tire cryogrinds were subjected to abiotic weathering. Next, the total environmental availability from parent elastomers and the release of additives from tire tread compounds were evaluated using mass concentration factors obtained from abiotic weathered tire cryogrinds. Headspace Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (HS-GC-MS) was employed as a nontargeted, suspect screening analysis technique to identify the tire related intermediates. Benzothiazole, 1,2-dihydro-2,2,4-trimethylquinoline (TMQ), aniline, phenol and benzoic acid were detected as tire tetrahydrofuran leachates. Total environmental availability of TMQ and benzothiazole were in the range of 1.7 × 10-3 and 0.11, respectively. Benzene and benzoic acid derivatives were identified as marker compounds for environmental samples. A TRWP content evaluation was made possible by quantifying marker concentrations and reference tire cryogrind formulation. TRWP content in the size range of 1-5 mm was between 800 and 1300 μg/g and 1200-3100 μg/g TRWP in Ohio and Kansas soil. For TRWP less than 1 mm, 0.15-2.1 wt% content was observed in Kansas and Ohio samples and were seemingly dependent on the locations and the traffic. This simple, widely applicable quantification method for TRWP analysis provides a database of tire degradation and TRWP intermediates. The TRWP content research is critical for further TRWP research development in terrestrial environment.

Abstract
The microplastics (MP) pollution has been receiving high attention in recent years, because of the massive amounts of plastics it contributes to the environment. Tyre wear and road wear particles (TWP and RWPs) were identified as major sources of MPs, but the observed data on these particles in urban snow deposits and snowmelt is scarce. To contribute to remediation of this situation, a study designed to quantify TWPs and RWPs in urban roadside snowbanks, and assess the MP occurrence in three size fractions, was conducted in the Luleå and Umeå municipalities in Northern Sweden. TWPs and RWPs were determined in three size fractions: 50-100 μm, 100-300 μm, and ≥300 μm, and their release from melting snow was investigated in the laboratory under controlled conditions. Among the MPs identified in snow and the associated snowmelt samples, a majority consisted of both types of particles (T&RWPs) with an average of 20,000 ± 48,000 number/L, whereas other MPs (fibres, fragments, flakes, and films of plastic) were much less plentiful with an average concentration of 24 ± 16 number/L. The largest proportion of T&RWPs was detected in the size fraction 50-100 μm (around 80%), and the smallest proportion was in the fraction ≥300 μm (about 2%). Of the T&RWPs, about 85% were black bitumen particles (RWPs), composed of bitumen, mineral material and polymer modifiers, and 15% were tyre wear particles (TWPs) composed of rubber. The laboratory snow melting experiments demonstrated that urban snow stored MPs, which were eventually released during snowmelt. The ultimate fate of released MPs would depend on snowmelt drainage; it may either drain away from the road pavement and infiltrate into the ground, or enter the road gutter and be conveyed to storm sewers discharging to the receiving waters.

Abstract
Tire wear particles (TWP) are assumed to be one of the major sources of microplastic pollution to the environment. However, many of the previously published studies are based on theoretical estimations rather than field measurements. To increase the knowledge regarding actual environmental concentrations, samples were collected and analyzed from different matrices in a rural highway environment to characterize and quantify TWP and other traffic-derived non-exhaust particles. The sampled matrices included road dust (from kerb and in-between wheeltracks), runoff (water and sediment), and air. In addition, airborne deposition was determined in a transect with increasing distance from the road. Two sieved size fractions (2-20 µm and 20-125 µm) were analyzed by automated Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) single particle analysis and classified with a machine learning algorithm into the following subclasses: TWP, bitumen wear particles (BiWP), road markings, reflecting glass beads, metals, minerals, and biogenic/organic particles. The relative particle number concentrations (%) showed that the runoff contained the highest proportion of TWP (up to 38 %). The share of TWP in kerb samples tended to be higher than BiWP. However, a seasonal increase of BiWP was observed in coarse (20-125 µm) kerb samples during winter, most likely reflecting studded tire use. The concentration of the particle subclasses within airborne PM80-1 decreases with increasing distance from the road, evidencing road traffic as the main emission source. The results confirm that road dust and the surrounding environment contain traffic-derived microplastics in both size fractions. The finer fraction (2-20 µm) dominated (by mass, volume, and number) in all sample matrices. These particles have a high potential to be transported in water and air far away from the source and can contribute to the inhalable particle fraction (PM10) in air. This highlights the importance of including also finer particle fractions in future investigations.

Abstract
Magnetic extraction offers a rapid and low-cost solution to microplastic (MP) separation, in which we magnetize the hydrophobic surface of MPs to separate them from complex environmental matrices using magnets. We synthesized a hydrophobic Fe-silane based nanocomposite (Fe@SiO2/MDOS) to separate MPs from freshwater. Pristine and weathered, polyethylene (PE) and tire wear particles (TWP) of different sizes were used in the study. The weathering of MPs was performed in an accelerated weathering chamber according to ISO 4892-2:2013 standards that mimic natural weathering conditions. The chemical properties and morphology of the Fe@SiO2/MDOS, PE and TWP were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The thermal properties of PE and TWP were evaluated by Thermogravimetric analysis. Using 1.00 mg of Fe@SiO2/MDOS nanocomposite, 2.00 mg of pristine and weathered PE were extracted from freshwater; whereas, using the same amount of the nanocomposite, 7.92 mg of pristine TWP and 6.87 mg of weathered TWP were extracted. The retrieval of weathered TWP was 13% less than that of pristine TWP, which can be attributed to the increasing hydrophilicity of weathered TWP. The results reveal that the effectiveness of the magnetic separation technique varies among different polymer types and their sizes; the weathering of MPs also influences the magnetic separation efficiency.

Abstract
Tire and road wear particles (TRWP) account for an important part of the polymer particles released into the environment. There are scientific knowledge gaps as to the potential bioaccessibility of chemicals associated with TRWP to aquatic organisms. This study investigated the solubilization and bioaccessibility of seven of the most widely used tire-associated organic chemicals and four of their degradation products from cryogenically milled tire tread (CMTT) into fish digestive fluids using an in vitro digestion model based on Oncorhynchus mykiss. Our results showed that 0.06-44.1% of the selected compounds were rapidly solubilized into simulated gastric and intestinal fluids within a typical gut transit time for fish (3 h in gastric and 24 h in intestinal fluids). The environmentally realistic scenario of coingestion of CMTT and fish prey was explored using ground Gammarus pulex. Coingestion caused compound-specific changes in solubilization, either increasing or decreasing the compounds' bioaccessibility in simulated gut fluids compared to CMTT alone. Our results emphasize that tire-associated compounds become accessible in a digestive milieu and should be studied further with respect to their bioaccumulation and toxicological effects upon passage of intestinal epithelial cells.

Abstract
In recent years, concerns have arisen from the chemicals incorporated into tire material which are of potential to leach with the tire and road wear particles (TRWP) into the environment. In this study, the distributions of substituted benzothiazoles (BTHs) and p-phenylenediamines (PPDs), two groups of representative TRWP-related chemicals, were investigated in various size fractions (<20, 20-53, 53-125, 125-250, 250-500, 500-1000 μm) of dust samples from open roads and indoor parking lots in the urban region of Guangzhou (Guangdong, China). Mass weight distribution of the dust samples showed that fractions of <250 μm accounted for >72% of the total dust in both microenvironments. Widespread occurrence was observed with >80% detection frequency for almost all target compounds in all the particle fractions. Concentrations of BTHs and PPDs were similar between the two dust matrices. In addition, the newly defined transformation product of 6PPD, 6PPD-Q was at the median concentration of 122 ng/g in road dust and 154 ng/g in indoor parking lot dust. Overall, concentrations of the target BTHs and PPDs varied in different size fractions, which were mostly dominated in fine particle sizes (<53 μm). Specially, >70% of the target compounds were in the size fractions of <250 μm, suggesting the necessity of using <250 μm fractions of particles for monitoring and evaluating contamination levels and exposure risks of BTHs and PPDs from dust in future studies.

Abstract
PM10 emissions generated from the brake wear of passenger car per braking event during three test driving cycles (WLTP, LACT, and WLTP-Brake) were studied using a finite element analysis (FEA) approach in combination with the relationship among the mass emitted rate of airborne particles versus local contact pressure and sliding speed. In addition, PM10 emissions were measured per braking event during the WLTP-Brake cycle on a brake dynamometer using an electrical low-pressure impactor (ELPI+) to validate the proposed FEA approach. The simulated and experimental results for WLTP-Brake illustrated that the proposed simulation approach has the potential to predict PM10 from brake wear per braking event, with an R2 value of 0.93. The FEA results of three test driving cycles showed that there was a gradient rise in pad wear on both sides from the inner to outer radii. The simulated PM10 emission factors during the WLTP, LACT, and WLTP-Brake were 7.9 mg km-1 veh-1, 9.8 mg km-1 veh-1, and 6.4 mg km-1 veh-1, respectively. Among three test driving cycles, the ratio of PM10 to total brake wear mass per braking event was the largest for the LACT, followed by WLTP and WLTP-Brake. From a practical application perspective, reducing the frequency of high-speed braking may be an effective way to decrease the generation of PM10 emissions.

Abstract
A comprehensive understanding of tire and road wear particles (TRWPs) and their detection and quantification in soils is still challenged by the lack of well-set standardized methods, inherent technological inconsistencies, and generalized protocols. Our protocol includes soil sampling, size separation, and organic matter removal by using hydrogen peroxide followed by density separation and analysis. In this context, roadside soil samples from different sites in Kansas and Ohio, USA, were collected and analyzed. Tire cryogrinds analogous to TRWPs were used to evaluate various density separation media, and collected particles more than 1 mm in size were then subjected to infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) to confirm TRWP presence. Particles smaller than 1 mm were Soxhlet extracted, followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to validate the presence of tire-related intermediates. SEM-EDX validated the presence of elemental combinations (S + Zn/Na) ± (Al, Ca, Mg, K, Si) attributed to tires. Ketones, carboxylic acids, epoxies, cyclohexane, and benzothiazole sulfenamide (BTS) intermediates were the most probable tire-related intermediates observed in the roadside soil samples. Thus, this simple, widely applicable, cost-effective sample preparation protocol for TRWP analysis can assist TRWP research advancement in terrestrial environments.

Abstract
Road pollution is one of the major sources of microplastic particles to the environment. The distribution of tire, polymer-modified bitumen (PMB) and tire and road wear particles (TRWP) in different tunnel compartments were explored: road surface, gully-pots and tunnel wash water. A new method for calculating TRWP using Monte Carlo simulation is presented. The highest concentrations on the surface were in the side bank (tire:13.4 ± 5.67;PMB:9.39 ± 3.96; TRWP:22.9 ± 8.19 mg/m2), comparable to previous studies, and at the tunnel outlet (tire:7.72 ± 11.2; PMB:5.40 ± 7.84; TRWP:11.2 ± 16.2 mg/m2). The concentrations in gully-pots were highest at the inlet (tire:24.7 ± 26.9; PMB:17.3 ± 48.8; TRWP:35.8 ± 38.9 mg/g) and comparable to values previously reported for sedimentation basins. Untreated wash water was comparable to road runoff (tire:38.3 ± 10.5; PMB:26.8 ± 7.33; TRWP:55.3 ± 15.2 mg/L). Sedimentation treatment retained 63% of tire and road wear particles, indicating a need to increase the removal efficiency to prevent these from entering the environment. A strong linear relationship (R2-adj=0.88, p < 0.0001) between total suspended solids (TSS) and tire and road wear rubber was established, suggesting a potential for using TSS as a proxy for estimating rubber loads for monitoring purposes. Future research should focus on a common approach to analysis and calculation of tire, PMB and TRWP and address the uncertainties related to these calculations.

Abstract
Using sodium chloride (NaCl) for de-icing roads is known to have severe consequences on freshwater organisms when washed into water bodies. N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine, also known as 6PPD, is an antiozonant mainly found in automobile tire rubber to prevent ozone mediated cracking or wear-out. Especially the ozonated derivate, 6PPD-quinone, which is washed into streams after storm events, has been found to be toxic for coho salmon. Studies on other freshwater organisms could not confirm those findings, pointing towards distinct species-specific differences. Storm events result in greater run-offs from all water-soluble contaminants into freshwater bodies, potentially enhancing the concentrations of both chloride and 6PPD during winter. Here we show that these two contaminants have synergistic negative effects on the population growth of the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus, a common freshwater herbivore. Hence, while only high concentrations of 6PPD and even higher concentrations of 6PPD-quinone, beyond environmentally relevant concentrations, had lethal effects on rotifers, the addition of NaCl enhanced the sensitivity of the rotifers towards the application of 6PPD so that their negative effects were more pronounced at lower concentrations. Similarly, 6PPD increased the lethal effect of NaCl. Our results support the species-specific toxicity of 6PPD and demonstrate a synergistic effect of the antiozonant on the toxicity of other environmentally relevant stressors, such as road salt contamination.

Abstract
Tire granulates recovered from end-of-life tires contain a complex mixture of chemicals, amongst them polyaromatic compounds (PACs), of which many are recognized to be toxic and persistent in the environment. Only a few of these PACs are regularly monitored. In this study a combined approach of chemical analysis and a battery of CALUX® in vitro bioassays was used to determine PAC concentrations and estrogenic, (anti)-androgenic and aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) activities in tire granulates. Tire granulates from a recycling company was analyzed for PAHs, alkyl-PAHs, oxy-PAHs and heterocyclic PACs (NSO-PACs), in total 85 PACs. The concentrations of PACs were between 42 and 144 mg/kg, with major contribution from PAHs (74-88%) followed by alkyl-PAHs (6.6-20%) and NSO-PACs (1.8-7.0%). The sum of eight priority PAHs were between 2.3 and 8.6 mg/kg, contributing with 4.7-8.2% of ∑PACs. Bioassay analysis showed presence of AhR agonists, estrogen receptor (ERα) agonists, and androgen receptor (AR) antagonists in the tire granulate samples. Only 0.8-2.4% of AhR-mediated activities could be explained by the chemical analysis. Benzo[k+j]fluoranthenes, benzo[b]fluoranthene, indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene, 2-methylchrysene, and 3-methylchrysene were the major contributors to the AhR-mediated activities. The high contribution (98-99%) of unknown bioactive compounds to the bioassay effects in this study raises concerns and urges for further investigations of toxicants identification and source apportionment.

Abstract
Long tunnels with significant overburden, changeable geological conditions, a steep gradient, water infiltration, and heavy traffic flow are susceptible to environmental concerns during both construction and operation. The availability of fresh air and visibility is the most important necessity in excavation for tunnel workers inside the tunnel during the construction phase, as well as those crossing the tunnel during operation. Lowari Tunnel’s tunnel air pollutants were researched. Carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), oxygen (O2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxide (NO), ammonia (NH3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), PM1, PM2.5, PM10, air velocity, dust morphological and particle size distribution analysis are among the parameters under consideration. The findings provide evidence for the development of tunnel air quality.

Abstract
Despite numerous studies on the spatial distribution of pollutants in urban environments, little is known about their vertical profile. The presented research aims to analyze loadings and concentration of elements sedimented on exterior glass window surfaces of a high-rise building in Moscow city. The roadside part of a typical 17-level building was examined. Window sediments were collected along vertical from the 2nd to the 17th level using the novel instrumental approach of wet vacuum dust collection. A clear declining trend of sediment weight distribution was observed along the height increase. The values decreased by six times within 40-m vertical, from the 3rd (386 mg m-2) by the 17th level (63 mg m-2), driven by a decline of coarse dust fraction. Organic matter, Si, and Ca were the key contributors to the window sediments, providing 40%, 15%, and 4% in total weight, respectively. Among other elements, the highest proportions (over 1%) were identified for S, Fe, and Al, whereas little less (0.5-1%), for Mg, K, and Na, individually. Other element concentrations decreased in the following order P > Zn > Mn > Cu > Ba > Sr > Cr > V > Ni > Pb > Co > As>Cd. Element concentrations did not differ along vertical gradient due to the constant proportion of the finest dust fraction. Window sediments were characterized by 2-4 times higher concentrations of most of the studied elements than the road dust, being enriched by S, Na, Zn, and Cu - 27, 15, 10, and 6 times higher, respectively. Based on the strong correlation between the composition of road dust and window sediments, we consider resuspension of the road dust as a predominant source of particles sedimented on window glass surfaces and its enrichment by non-exhaust traffic-related elements. The research proved the validity of the suggested instrumental technique for sediment collection from window glass surfaces. Elemental analysis of window sediments was considered as a promising approach for environmental studies.

Abstract
A recently identified chemical, 2-((4-Methylpentan-2-yl)amino)-5-(phenylamino)cyclohexa-2,5-diene-1,4-dione (6PPD-quinone; 6PPD-Q), is a transformation product of an additive used in the manufacture of tire rubber and causes acute lethality in coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) in urban watersheds. Despite its potential presence and ecotoxicity in receiving waters worldwide, information on the occurrence and fate of 6PPD-Q is limited. Here, we investigated the concentrations of 6PPD-Q and its parent chemical, 6PPD, in road dust collected from arterial and residential roads in Tokyo, Japan from May to October 2021. 6PPD-Q concentrations were highest from May to June, when atmospheric ozone concentrations are the highest in Japan; a correlation between 6PPD-Q and photochemical oxidants, as an alternative to ozone, corroborated this finding. We also found that 6PPD-Q concentrations at photochemical oxidant concentrations ranging from 35 to 47 ppbv were higher in dust collected from roads with high traffic volumes (i.e., arterial roads; median: 8.6 μg/g-OC) than in dust collected from roads with lower traffic volumes (i.e., residential roads; median: 6.3 μg/g-OC), indicating that 6PPD-Q is generated from traffic-related sources. We also found that 6PPD-Q was leached from dust particles within a few hours, with a log partitioning coefficient between organic carbon and water (KOC) of 3.2-3.5. The present results will help to understand the environmental occurrence, fate, and behavior of 6PPD-Q.

Abstract
Tire road wear particles (TRWPs) are one of the largest sources of microplastics to the urban environment with recent concerns as they also provide a pathway for additive chemicals to leach into the environment. Stormwater is a major source of TRWPs and associated additives to urban surface water, with additives including the antioxidant derivative N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine-quinone (6PPD-quinone) demonstrating links to aquatic toxicity at environmentally relevant concentrations. The present study used complementary analysis methods to quantify both TRWPs and a suite of known tire additive chemicals (including 6PPD-quinone) to an urban tributary in Australia during severe storm events. Concentrations of additives increased more than 40 times during storms, with a maximum concentration of 2760 ng/L for ∑15additives, 88 ng/L for 6PPD-quinone, and a similar profile observed in each storm. TRWPs were detected during storm peaks with a maximum concentration between 6.4 and 18 mg/L, and concentrations of TRWPs and all additives were highly correlated. Contaminant mass loads to this catchment were estimated as up to 100 g/storm for ∑15additives, 3 g/storm for 6PPD-quinone, and between 252 and 730 kg of TRWPs/storm. While 6PPD-quinone concentrations in this catchment were lower than previous studies, elevated concentrations post storm suggest prolonged aquatic exposure.

Abstract
Tire and road wear particles may constitute the largest source of microplastic particles into the environment. Quantification of these particles are associated with large uncertainties which are in part due to inadequate analytical methods. New methodology is presented in this work to improve the analysis of tire and road wear particles using pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry of styrene butadiene styrene, a component of polymer-modified bitumen used on road asphalt, produces pyrolysis products identical to those of styrene butadiene rubber and butadiene rubber, which are used in tires. The proposed method uses multiple marker compounds to measure the combined mass of these rubbers in samples and includes an improved step of calculating the amount of tire and road based on the measured rubber content and site-specific traffic data. The method provides good recoveries of 83-92% for a simple matrix (tire) and 88-104% for a complex matrix (road sediment). The validated method was applied to urban snow, road-side soil and gully-pot sediment samples. Concentrations of tire particles in these samples ranged from 0.1 to 17.7 mg/mL (snow) to 0.6-68.3 mg/g (soil/sediment). The concentration of polymer-modified bitumen ranged from 0.03 to 0.42 mg/mL (snow) to 1.3-18.1 mg/g (soil/sediment).

Abstract
The environmental fate of tire and road wear particles (TRWPs) receives increasing attention due to the per capita emission volumes of 0.2-5.5 kg/(cap year) and recent reports on the environmental hazard of TRWP constituents. It is expected that aging impacts TRWPs fate in the environment but detailed knowledge is quite limited, yet. Making use of information on tire aging, the available knowledge on environmental aging processes such as thermooxidation, photooxidation, ozonolysis, shear stress, biodegradation and leaching is reviewed here. Experimental techniques to simulate aging are addressed as are analytical techniques to determine aging induced changes of TRWPs, covering physical and chemical properties. The suitability of various tire wear test materials is discussed. Findings and methods from tire aging can be partially applied to study aging of TRWPs in the environment. There is a complex interplay between aging processes in the environment that needs to be considered in future aging studies. In addition to existing basic qualitative understanding of the aging processes, quantitative understanding of TRWP aging is largely lacking. Aging in the environment needs to consider the TRWPs as well as chemicals released. Next steps for filling the gaps in knowledge on aging of TRWPs in the environment are elaborated.

Abstract
The share of non-exhaust particles, including tire wear particles (TWP), within the airborne dust and particularly within PM10 has increased in recent years due to a significant reduction of other particles including exhaust road traffic emissions. However, the quantification of TWP is a demanding task due to the non-specificity of tracers, and the fact that they are commonly contained in analytically challenging low concentrations (e.g. Zn, styrene, 1,3-butadiene, vinylcyclohexene). This difficulty is amplified by the chemical and morpho-textural heterogeneity of TWP resulting from the interaction between the tires and the road surface. In contrast to bulk techniques, automated single particle SEM/EDX analysis can benefit from the ubiquitous heterogeneity of environmental TWP as a diagnostic criterion for their identification and quantification. For this purpose, we follow a machine-learning (ML) approach that makes use of an extensive number (67) of morphological, textural (backscatter-signal based) and chemical descriptors to differentiate environmental particles into the following classes: TWP, metals, minerals and biogenic/organic. We present a ML-based model developed to classify airborne samples (trained by >100,000 environmental particles including 6841 TWP), and its application within a one-year monitoring campaign at two Swiss sites. In this study, the mass concentrations of TWP in the airborne fractions PM80-10, PM10-2.5 and PM2.5-1 were determined. Furthermore, the particle size distribution and shape characteristics of 5621 TWP were evaluated. A cut through a TWP by means of FIB-SEM evidences that the mineral and metal particles typically found in TWP are not only present on the particle surface but also throughout the complete TWP volume. At the urban background site, the annual average mass fraction of TWP and micro-rubber in PM10 was 1.8% (0.28 μg/m3) and 0.9%, respectively. At the urban kerbside site, the corresponding values were 6 times higher amounting to 10.5% (2.24 μg/m3) for TWP, and 5.0% for micro-rubber.
