Abstract
Background Few studies have discussed the health benefits of total dietary intake of live microbes (TDIIM). We investigated the relationship between daily estimated TDIIM and mortality in US adults. Materials and methods This cohort study included subjects ≥18 years from the 1999-2018 NHANES and their mortality data through December 31, 2019. The TDIIM counts were estimated based on a prior classification system, with foods categorized into low (<10^7 CFU/g), medium (10^7-10^10 CFU/g), and high (>10^10 CFU/g) levels of live microbes. Individual intakes were calculated by multiplying the microbial levels by the corresponding grams of food consumed. Weighted Cox regression models, Kaplan-Meier survival curves, and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were used to estimate the association between all-cause and cardiovascular (CVD) mortality and TDIIM. Results Among 52,383 participants, during a median follow-up period of 118.75 months, a total of 7,711 deaths were recorded, of which 1,985 were CVD deaths. In the weighted Cox regression model, compared to participants with low TDIIM, those with high intake have lower risks of all-cause mortality (HR 0.91; 95% CI, 0.82-1.00; P for trend, 0.01), and CVD mortality (HR 0.77; 95% CI, 0.63-0.95; P for trend, 0.005). In the RCS analysis, the relationship between TDIIM and all-cause mortality exhibited a non-linear pattern with a gradual decline followed by a plateau at higher intakes, while a linear decreasing trend was observed with CVD mortality. Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed that participants with low TDIIM had a higher risk of all-cause mortality and CVD mortality. Conclusion In this cohort study of US adults, a higher estimated TDIIM reduced the risk of all-cause and CVD mortality. These findings suggest that the ingestion of live microbes in the diet may be advantageous for human health.

Abstract
Objectives: Using data from the Food Insecurity among European University Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic (FINESCOP) project, this study aims to investigate the dietary intakes among university students in Iceland, focusing specifically on their current diet after March 2020. Additionally, it examines correlations among different food groups to reveal associations in dietary patterns. Methods: The investigation uses data from the observational FINESCOP project in Iceland. Spearman's correlation coefficients were used to identify associations between different dietary intakes. p values show significance at a level of <0.05. Results: Icelandic university students have a low intake of vegetables and salad ("3-4 times per week", n = 159, 24.8%), fruit ("1-2 times per week", n = 164, 25.6%), and whole wheat ("3-4 times per week", n = 147, 23.2%). Lower than these was legume intake ("Never/seldom", n = 203, 32.0%). Meat and eggs were consumed more frequently ("3-4 times per week", n = 231, 36.3%) compared to fish and seafood ("1-2 times per week", n = 277, 43.5%). While the findings do indicate a significant correlation between vegetables and salad and fruit intake (p < 0.001) and between vegetable and salad and legume intake (p < 0.001), causal relationships cannot be established. Among discretionary foods, sweets and snacks were moderately and significantly correlated (p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study explores dietary intakes and correlations between dietary factors among university students in Iceland. Further research is needed to explore the potential for causal inferences and better understand these dietary behaviors of university students in Iceland.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Individuals experiencing higher stress levels tend to consume fewer fruits and vegetables compared to their less stressed counterparts. Thus, to promote fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption, action planning has been proven effective in translating behavioral intentions into actual dietary behaviors. This study aims to evaluate a 7-day intervention designed to improve FV planning and intake, while also examining the role of stress. METHODS The trial employed a 3 (time: pretest, post-test, and follow-up) * 2 (group: intervention vs. control) between-participant factorial design. A total of 99 young Chinese adults (age = 23.84 years ± 4.63, 26 men) who had formed an explicit intention to consume more fruit and vegetables, participated in a 7-day online randomized controlled trial. RESULTS The intervention successfully enhanced FV planning as well as FV intake. Furthermore, a moderated mediation model revealed that FV planning mediated the relationship between experimental conditions and FV intake, with stress moderating this mediation. Specifically, planning facilitated FV intake for individuals with low stress levels, while this effect was not observed for those with high stress levels. CONCLUSION These findings confirm the positive impact of the planning intervention on improving FV intake, particularly for individuals with low stress levels, and highlight stress as a barrier to health behavior change that warrants further attention in future studies.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION It is unclear whether changing trajectories of renal function will increase the risk prediction information of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study aimed to evaluate the trajectory patterns of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and the association between eGFR trajectories and CVD risk. METHODS A total of 4742 participants were included in the cohort from the 51st Regiment of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. The study endpoint was the occurrence of CVD events. eGFR trajectories were identified using a linear mixed-effects model in four distinct patterns. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards models analysed the correlations between eGFR trajectories and CVD. RESULTS During a median follow-up period of 5.7 years, a total of 559 (11.8%) CVD, 404 (8.5%) myocardial infarction (MI), 244 (5.2%) ischemic stroke (IS), and 62 (1.3%) heart failure (HF) incidents occurred. After multivariable adjustment, gradual decline trajectory increased the risk of CVD (HR 1.42, 95% CI 1.16-1.74), MI (HR 1.41, 95% CI 1.11-1.79), and IS (HR 1.41, 95% CI 1.04-1.92); gradual increase trajectory reduced the risk of CVD (HR 0.40, 95% CI 0.25-0.64) and MI (HR 0.49, 95% CI 0.29-0.81). Consistent results were obtained in sensitivity and subgroup analyses. CONCLUSIONS Decline and increase of renal function were related to the risk of CVD, MI, and IS in the rural areas of Xinjiang. Monitoring eGFR changing trajectory is of great significance in improving the risk of CVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE We investigated the relationship between daily adequate FV intake and risk of all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer mortalities among Malaysian adults. METHODS Data from a total of 18,211 Malaysian adults aged 18 years and above whom participated in the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2011 were analyzed. The participants were followed up for approximately 11 years, and mortality data were ascertained through record linkages with the death registry from the Malaysian National Registration Department. Multiple Cox regression was applied to assess the association between daily adequate FV intake and risk of all-cause, CVD, and cancer mortalities, adjusting for sociodemographic, lifestyle, and health conditions. RESULTS During the follow-up period, we observed a total of 1809 all-cause, 374 CVD, and 216 cancer mortalities. No significant association between daily adequate FV intake with all-cause mortality (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR): 1.01, 95% confidence interval (CI: 0.79-1.31), CVD mortality (aHR: 0.91, 95% CI: 0.57-1.47), and cancer mortality (aHR: 1.27, 95% CI: 0.74-2.17) were observed, even after excluding deaths that occurred in the first two years of observation. CONCLUSIONS Further investigation on the type of FV intake and its preparation method with risk of mortality will provide a holistic insight into the causal relationship between FV intake and mortality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine whether education level and income trajectories influence vegetable consumption changes over 13 years among civil servants at different campuses of a university in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. METHODS Vegetable intake frequency (daily and non-daily consumption), income (per capita), and education level (maintenance of low schooling/ upward mobility/maintenance of high schooling) were assessed at baseline (1999) and in the fourth wave (2011-12) of the Pró-Saúde (Pro-Health) cohort study. A total of 2,381 participants were analyzed. The association between educational and income trajectories and variation in vegetable consumption was assessed via crude and age-adjusted generalized linear models, stratified by sex. RESULTS Men in upward educational mobility showed a 0.5% increase in vegetable consumption (p=0.01), while women in this group demonstrated a 2.5% increase (p=0.05). Adjusted models showed that women who reduced their income had a lower likelihood of consuming vegetables (odds ratio [OR] 0.93; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.89-0.97). CONCLUSIONS The findings highlight the influence of social inequalities on vegetable consumption in adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Few studies link vitamin K intake with incident atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), and the specific mechanism remains uncertain. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between dietary vitamin K and ASCVD. METHODS This study used cross-sectional data from people over 20 years old who took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2013 and 2018. Vitamin K intake was assessed using a 24-h dietary review. The Patient Medical Conditions Questionnaire was used to assess ASCVD. The stability of the outcomes was evaluated using cubic spline models with restricted parameters and logistic regression, while subgroup analyses were also performed. RESULTS There were 14,465 participants, with 9.78% (1415/14,465) who diagnosed with ASCVD. Compared with individuals with lower vitamin K intake Q1 (≤39.0 ug/day), the adjusted OR values for dietary vitamin K intake and ASCVD in Q2 (39.1-70.8 ug/day), Q3 (70.9-131.0 mg/day), and Q4 (≥131.1 ug/day) were 0.88 (95% CI: 0.74-1.04, p = 0.134), 0.77(95% CI: 0.65-0.93, p = 0.005), and 0.78 (95% CI: 0.65-0.95, p = 0.013), respectively. The association between dietary vitamin K intake and ASCVD showed an L-shaped curve (nonlinear, p = 0.006). The OR for ASCVD in participants with vitamin K intake <127.1ug/day was 0.996 (95% CI: 0.993-0.998, p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS The relationship between dietary vitamin K intake and ASCVD was L-shaped curve in US adults, the inflection point was roughly 127.1 ug/day.

Abstract
Pulses-comprising the dry, edible seeds of leguminous plants-have long been lauded for their culinary flexibility and substantial nutritional advantages. This scoping review aimed to map the evidence on how pulses contribute to overall human health. Four electronic databases were searched for clinical and observational studies in English. We identified 30 articles (3 cross-sectional studies, 1 federated meta-analysis, 8 prospective cohort studies, 1 before-and-after study, and 17 randomized controlled trials) that met our inclusion criteria. Predominant among the pulses studied were lentils, chickpeas, common bean varieties (e.g., pinto, black, navy, red, kidney), black-eyed peas, cowpeas, and split peas. Consumption modalities varied; most studies examined mixed pulses, while five isolated individual types. In intervention studies, pulses were incorporated into diets by allotting a fixed pulse serving on top of a regular diet or by substituting red meat with pulses, offering a comparative analysis of dietary effects. The health outcomes evaluated were multifaceted, ranging from lipid profiles to blood pressure, cardiovascular disease risk and mortality, type 2 diabetes and glycemic control, metabolic syndrome indicators, inflammatory markers, oxidative stress biomarkers, and hormonal profiles. The most frequently assessed study outcomes included changes in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, hemoglobin A1c, waist circumference, and C-reactive protein or high-sensitivity C-reactive protein. This review should serve as a call to action for the scientific community to build upon the existing evidence, enriching our understanding of the nutritional and health-promoting attributes of pulses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Patients with preserved ratio impaired spirometry (PRIsm) have higher incidence rate of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, few studies focused on PRIsm in China. We determined the prevalence and characteristics of patients with PRIsm in Chinese population. We also aimed to investigate the significant predictive factors of CVD in PRIsm patients. METHODS In total, 6994 subjects aged from 35 to 70 years old and free of CVD at baseline were categorized into normal (n = 3895), PRIsm (the ratio of forced expired volume in the first second (FEV1) to forced vital capacity (FVC) ≥0.7 and FEV1 <80 % predicted; n = 1997) and obstructive spirometry (FEV1:FVC<0.7; n = 1102). Cox proportional hazards multivariable regression was performed to investigate how baseline characteristics impact CVD incidence. RESULTS In participants with PRIsm, men had a 0.68-fold higher risk of CVD incidence than women (HR, 1.68; 95%CI, 1.09-2.59; p = 0.020). Our study showed that the rate of CVD incidence increased by 6.0 % with every year's increase in age (HR, 1.06; 95%CI, 1.04-1.09; p < 0.001). A 0.1 increase in FEV1/FVC was significantly associated with a 23.0 % decrease in CVD incidence (HR, 0.77; 95%CI, 0.61-0.97; p = 0.028). Family history of CVD greatly increased the risk of cardiovascular disease incidence (HR, 1.83; 95%CI, 1.18-2.83; p = 0.007). Higher BMI was also a significant risk factor of CVD incidence (HR, 1.06; 95%CI, 1.01-1.10; p = 0.013). CONCLUSION The prevalence of PRIsm in China was high. PRIsm subjects should be monitored carefully, especially for the older, male, those with higher BMI, lower FEV1/FVC and family history of CVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is growing evidence that substituting animal-based with plant-based foods is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), type 2 diabetes (T2D), and all-cause mortality. Our aim was to summarize and evaluate the evidence for the substitution of any animal-based foods with plant-based foods on cardiometabolic health and all-cause mortality in a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS We systematically searched MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science to March 2023 for prospective studies investigating the substitution of animal-based with plant-based foods on CVD, T2D, and all-cause mortality. We calculated summary hazard ratios (SHRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) using random-effects meta-analyses. We assessed the certainty of evidence (CoE) using the GRADE approach. RESULTS In total, 37 publications based on 24 cohorts were included. There was moderate CoE for a lower risk of CVD when substituting processed meat with nuts [SHR (95% CI): 0.73 (0.59, 0.91), n = 8 cohorts], legumes [0.77 (0.68, 0.87), n = 8], and whole grains [0.64 (0.54, 0.75), n = 7], as well as eggs with nuts [0.83 (0.78, 0.89), n = 8] and butter with olive oil [0.96 (0.95, 0.98), n = 3]. Furthermore, we found moderate CoE for an inverse association with T2D incidence when substituting red meat with whole grains/cereals [0.90 (0.84, 0.96), n = 6] and red meat or processed meat with nuts [0.92 (0.90, 0.94), n = 6 or 0.78 (0.69, 0.88), n = 6], as well as for replacing poultry with whole grains [0.87 (0.83, 0.90), n = 2] and eggs with nuts or whole grains [0.82 (0.79, 0.86), n = 2 or 0.79 (0.76, 0.83), n = 2]. Moreover, replacing red meat for nuts [0.93 (0.91, 0.95), n = 9] and whole grains [0.96 (0.95, 0.98), n = 3], processed meat with nuts [0.79 (0.71, 0.88), n = 9] and legumes [0.91 (0.85, 0.98), n = 9], dairy with nuts [0.94 (0.91, 0.97), n = 3], and eggs with nuts [0.85 (0.82, 0.89), n = 8] and legumes [0.90 (0.89, 0.91), n = 7] was associated with a reduced risk of all-cause mortality. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate that a shift from animal-based (e.g., red and processed meat, eggs, dairy, poultry, butter) to plant-based (e.g., nuts, legumes, whole grains, olive oil) foods is beneficially associated with cardiometabolic health and all-cause mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aging is a dynamic and heterogeneous process that may better be captured by trajectories of aging biomarkers. Biological age has been advocated as a better biomarker of aging than chronological age, and plant-based dietary patterns have been found to be linked to aging. However, the associations of biological age trajectories with mortality and plant-based dietary patterns remained unclear. METHODS Using group-based trajectory modeling approach, we identified distinctive aging trajectory groups among 12,784 participants based on a recently developed biological aging measure acquired at four-time points within an 8-year period. We then examined associations between aging trajectories and quintiles of plant-based dietary patterns assessed by overall plant-based diet index (PDI), healthful PDI (hPDI), and unhealthful PDI (uPDI) among 10,191 participants who had complete data on dietary intake, using multivariable multinomial logistics regression adjusting for sociodemographic and lifestyles factors. Cox proportional hazards regression models were applied to investigate the association between aging trajectories and all-cause mortality. RESULTS We identified three latent classes of accelerated aging trajectories: slow aging, medium-degree, and high-degree accelerated aging trajectories. Participants who had higher PDI or hPDI had lower odds of being in medium-degree (OR = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.65, 0.86 for PDI; OR = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.62, 0.85 for hPDI) or high-degree (OR = 0.63, 95% CI: 0.46, 0.86 for PDI; OR = 0.62, 95% CI: 0.44, 0.88 for hPDI) accelerated aging trajectories. Participants in the highest quintile of uPDI were more likely to be in medium-degree (OR = 1.72, 95% CI: 1.48, 1.99) or high-degree (OR = 1.70, 95% CI: 1.21, 2.38) accelerated aging trajectories. With a mean follow-up time of 8.40 years and 803 (6.28%) participants died by the end of follow-up, we found that participants in medium-degree (HR = 1.56, 95% CI: 1.29, 1.89) or high-degree (HR = 3.72, 95% CI: 2.73, 5.08) accelerated aging trajectory groups had higher risks of death than those in the slow aging trajectory. CONCLUSIONS We identified three distinctive aging trajectories in a large Asian cohort and found that adopting a plant-based dietary pattern, especially when rich in healthful plant foods, was associated with substantially lowered pace of aging.

Abstract
Cancer is a process involving cell mutation, increased proliferation, invasion, and metastasis. Over the years, this condition has represented one of the most concerning health problems worldwide due to its significant morbidity and mortality. At present, the incidence of cancer continues to grow exponentially. Thus, it is imperative to open new avenues in cancer research to understand the molecular changes driving DNA transformation, cell-to-cell interaction derangements, and immune system surveillance decay. In this regard, evidence supports the relationship between chronic inflammation and cancer. In light of this, a group of bioactive lipids derived from polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) may have a position as novel anti-inflammatory molecules known as the specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs), a group of pro-resolutive inflammation agents that could improve the anti-tumor immunity. These molecules have the potential role of chemopreventive and therapeutic agents for various cancer types, and their effects have been documented in the scientific literature. Thus, this review objective centers around understanding the effect of SPMs on carcinogenesis and their potential therapeutic effect.

Abstract
Background The burden of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) is on the rise in China, yet a comprehensive and systematic understanding of the temporal trends and distribution of CVD burden attributable to dietary factors across the provinces remains elusive. This study endeavors to provide a comprehensive depiction of the burden of CVDs attributable to dietary risk factors across China's geographical regions from 2002 to 2018. Methods Data from the China National Nutrition Surveys, the China Chronic Disease and Risk Factor Surveillance, the Hypertension Survey, and the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention cause-of-death reporting system were used to estimate the intake of dietary factor, the number of deaths, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), mortality rate, for ischemic heart disease (IHD), ischemic stroke (IS), hemorrhage and other stroke (HOS) attributable to dietary factors at national and provincial levels in China from 2002 to 2018. Using a comparative risk assessment approach, we estimated the proportion of CVDs burden attributable to suboptimal intake of seven dietary factors, both individually and collectively, among Chinese citizens aged 20 years or older. Finding The mean consumption of whole grains, soybeans, nuts, vegetables, fruits, red meat, and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) exhibited an upward trend from 2002 to 2018. However, with the exception of red meat and SSBs, the average intake remained below the levels recommended levels outlined in the Chinese national dietary guidelines. Inadequate fruit, whole grain, and vegetables intake were the leading dietary risk factors for IHD, IS and HOS in China, while nuts, soybean and SSB were only associated with IHD mortality. From 2002 to 2018, the number of deaths and mortality rate for CVDs attributable to suboptimal diet among Chinese males were greater than that of females. With increasing age, the diet-related mortality rate for CVDs increased substantially. In 2018, the nationwide mortality rate attributable to diet was found to be 77.9 (95% UI, 77.5-78.1) per 100,000 population for IHD, 34.1 (95% UI, 33.8-34.2) for IS, and 32.8 (95% UI, 32.4-32.8) for HOS. Suboptimal diet was responsible for 16.0 million (95% UI, 13.8-18.4) DALYs and 1137.1 (95% UI, 980.4-1312.3) DALYs per 100,000 population for stroke, and 13.9 million (95% UI, 11.8-16.3) DALYs and 990.2 (95% UI, 841.2-1158.6) DALYs for IHD. Across the provinces of China, in 2018, the highest age-standardized mortality rates of all diet-related deaths were observed in Shandong (92.8 [95% UI, 89.9-93.3]) for IHD, Heilongjiang (38.1 [95% UI, 36.2-38.8]) for IS, and Tibet (68.3 [95% UI, 65.0-70.1]) for HOS. The highest diet related DALYs were observed in Henan (1.4 million [95% UI, 1.2-1.6] for IS, and 1.3 million [95% UI, 1.1-1.5] for IHD). Interpretation This study provides a comprehensive picture of the geographic variation and temporal trends of the burden of CVDs attributable to dietary risk factors at the national and provincial levels from 2002 to 2018 in China, highlighting the need for geographically targeted intervention strategies to improve the quality of diet and reduce the diet-related burden of CVDs. Abstract
Background Previous studies found that increasing vegetable intake benefits are reduced after adjustment for socioeconomic factors. Using genetic variation as an instrumental variable for vegetable intake and socioeconomic status, we investigated the relationship between vegetable intake and ischemic cardio-cerebral vascular diseases and focused on whether socioeconomic status was a possible confounder. Methods From three independent genome-wide association studies, we extracted instrumental variables reflecting raw and cooked vegetable intake, which were used to perform Mendelian randomization analysis. To evaluate the effects of socioeconomic factors on vegetable intake, univariate and multivariate Mendelian randomization analyses were performed using single nucleotide polymorphisms representing education attainment and household income reported in the literature. We also performed outlier assessment and a series of sensitivity analyses to confirm the results. Results Genetically predicted raw and cooked vegetable intake were not associated with any ischemic cardio-cerebral vascular diseases and lipid components after Bonferroni correction. Univariate Mendelian randomized analysis revealed that raw vegetable intake was positively correlated with education attainment (β = 0.04, p = 0.029) and household income (β = 0.07, p < 0.001). Multivariate Mendelian randomized model showed a positive correlation between household income and raw vegetable intake (β = 0.06, p = 0.004). Socioeconomic status was closely associated with eating habits and lifestyle related to the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Conclusion Genetically determined raw and cooked vegetable intake was not associated with significant benefits in terms of ischemic cardio-cerebral vascular diseases while genetically determined socioeconomic status may have an impact on vegetable intake. Socioeconomic status, which was closely associated with other eating habits and lifestyle, may affect the association between vegetable intake and ischemic cardio-cerebral vascular diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Independent associations of quantity and variety of fruit and vegetables (FVs) with mortality in older people are still unclear. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to explore the association between the quantity and variety in FV consumption and mortality in older Chinese. METHODS A total of 19,597 participants of the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study aged >50 y were recruited from 2003 to 2006 and followed up until April 2021. The diet was assessed using a 300-item validated FFQ. Variety as a continuous variable was defined as the number of unique FV items (excluding potatoes, legumes, and fruit juices) intake per week over the past week. The associations of quantity and variety of FVs with mortality were analyzed, and analyses by the color of edible parts was performed. Multivariable Cox regression yielded HRs and 95% CIs. RESULTS During 286,821 person-year of follow-up, 4385 deaths occurred, including 1678 cardiovascular diseases (CVD), 1450 cancer, and 1257 other causes. Compared with the lowest quintile of variety in FV, the highest quintile was associated with lower risks of all-cause (HR: 0.81; 95% CI: 0.73-0.89) and CVD mortality (HR: 0.79; 95% CI 0.67-0.92). A greater variety of green and white FV intake was associated with lower risks of all-cause and CVD morality, and a greater variety of red/purple FV intake was associated with lower risks of all-cause and cancer mortality. However, the quantity of FV intake showed no association with all-cause, CVD, and cancer mortality. CONCLUSION Our findings have first showed that the variety, rather than quantity, in FV intake was associated with a lower risk of mortality in older Chinese. Dietary guidelines may recommend increasing the variety in FV intake, especially green, red/purple, and white FVs in older people.

Abstract
The consumption of fresh vegetables is related to healthy lifestyle habits present in culinary preparations in different regions. The presence of pathogenic parasites in these foods can cause gastrointestinal disorders. Thus, the objective of the present study was to carry out a narrative review of the literature on the prevalence of helminths in fresh vegetable samples. The analysis of the studies published from 2016 to 2022 showed that hookworms and Ascaris lumbricoides are the most common pathogenic helminths in fresh vegetable samples, with a prevalence of up to 73.8% and 55.1%, respectively. In addition, studies have shown associations between the presence of helminths and pathogenic protozoa. The results obtained in this review indicate the urgent need to implement actions at all stages of the vegetable production chain, from the water used in planting irrigation to cleaning before sale to the final consumer. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Research on the relationship between vegetable consumption and stroke among the Chinese population is still rare. This study aimed to explore the association between vegetable consumption and stroke. Using data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (1991-2018), we included 15,145 participants over 40 years old without stroke as the baseline. Participants were categorized into five groups according to vegetable consumption. The adjusted HRs of stroke associated with vegetable consumption were calculated using the COX proportional hazards model. During the follow-up, 504 stroke cases were detected (303 men and 201 women). For the females, compared with the Q1 group of vegetable consumption, the multivariable-adjusted HRs for stroke were 0.60 (95%CI 0.36, 1.00) in the group of Q4. No significant associations between vegetable consumption and stroke were found among males. Furthermore, compared with the Q1 group of dark vegetable consumption, for the whole subjects, the multivariable-adjusted HRs for stroke were 0.68 (95%CI 0.50, 0.92) in the group of Q4. For the females, compared with the Q1 group of dark vegetable consumption, the multivariable-adjusted HRs for stroke were 0.49 (95%CI 0.30, 0.80) in the group of Q4. In conclusion, this study suggested that vegetable consumption decreases the risk of stroke among Chinese females. In addition, the intake of dark vegetables was inversely associated with stroke.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Eating behaviors and dietary patterns begin in early childhood and persist into adolescence and adulthood, affecting lifelong acute and chronic disease risk. Vegetables provide a high density of necessary vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Dietary intake data show that children of all ages consume below the recommended range for vegetables. Pediatric providers are optimally positioned to promote vegetable intake in childhood. This review seeks to summarize lessons learned from behavioral interventions useful in the pediatric primary care setting to improve vegetable intake. RECENT FINDINGS Ten published studies tested behavioral interventions in primary care to increase child vegetable intake. Strategies tested include teaching healthy eating behaviors and role modeling to parents of infants, and motivational interviewing paired with frequent office visits and reminders for families of older children and adolescents. Some strategies suggested positive change, despite study quality being limited by underpowered samples, heterogeneity of outcome measures, and statistical analytic approach. SUMMARY Increased vegetable intake was achieved in infants through parental role-modeling when providers emphasized healthy dietary choices in parents. Older children increased their vegetable intake with motivational interviewing and frequent reminders from providers. Despite the high prevalence of inadequate vegetable intake among children, at present, there is only a modest body of literature to help guide pediatric providers in implementing practice-based interventions to improve vegetable intake in childhood, highlighting a need for high-quality research in this area.

Abstract
The effects and regulation of Beclin-1-an autophagy-related protein-have not been fully defined, however, a negative correlation has been reported between Beclin-1 expression and carcinogenesis. Meanwhile, no compound has been shown to directly inhibit its activity. Here, we evaluate piceatannol, a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound, as a potential targeting agonist of Beclin-1, to assess its efficacy as an antitumor agent against gastric cancer. More specifically, we determine the effects of piceatannol treatment on cell viability using a monitoring system and colony forming assay. Piceatannol was found to efficiently inhibit the proliferation of several human gastric cancer cell lines. Autophagic flux is increased by piceatannol treatment, and correlates with inhibition of cell proliferation and colony formation. Additionally, microscale thermophoresis and surface plasmon resonance results show a direct interaction between piceatannol and Beclin-1, which reduces the phosphorylation activity of Beclin-1 at the Ser-295 site. Notably, piceatannol impairs the binding of Beclin-1 to Bcl-2 and enhances the recruitment of binding of UV radiation resistance-associated gene protein, which further triggers Beclin-1-dependent autophagy signaling. An increase in autophagic activity via treatment with the mTOR inhibitor, everolimus, effectively sensitizes piceatannol-induced antitumor effects. Xenograft models confirmed that piceatannol inhibits tumor development and elicits a potent synergistic effect with everolimus in vivo. Taken together, the findings of this study strongly support the application of combinatorial piceatannol and everolimus therapy in future clinical trials for gastric cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite their low energy density and high nutrient content, legumes may be under-recognised as a beneficial food for the prevention and management of obesity and related diseases, such as cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study aims to analyse the moderation effect of legume intake on the relationship between BMI and the prevalence of CVD among the Malaysian adult population. METHODS This study addressed communities of urban and rural Malaysia, including adults aged between 35 and 70 years old at the baseline recruitment. A series of standardised questionnaires were used to assess legume intake, history of comorbidities and socio-demographic information. Resting blood pressure measurements and physical examinations were performed to collect blood pressure and anthropometric data. Bivariate analysis was completed to determine the association between legume intake, socio-demographic characteristics and CVD prevalence. Moderation analysis was used to quantify the moderation effect of minimum daily legume intake on the relationship between BMI and CVD prevalence. RESULTS This study found that those who consume less than 3 servings of legumes per day benefit from protective effects against CVD risk (POR = 0.56, 95% CI = 0.37 - 0.85). Moderation analysis of a minimum of three servings/day for the relationship between BMI and CVD prevalence showed significant effects. The group that benefited the most from this effect was those with a BMI in the range of 26 to 34 kg/m2. CONCLUSIONS This study provides new insights into the recommendation for legume intake according to the relationship between BMI and the prevalence of CVD in Malaysian adults. This study recommends that those with a BMI of 26 to 34 kg/m2 should consume at least 3 servings of legumes per day to reduce the risk of CVD. Further prospective research is warranted to affirm these findings throughout the Malaysian population.

Abstract
PURPOSE Fruit intake is beneficial to several chronic diseases, but controversial in diabetes. We aimed to investigate prospectively the associations of whole fresh fruit intake with risk of incident type 2 diabetes (T2D) in subjects with different glucose regulation capacities. METHODS The present study included 79,922 non-diabetic participants aged ≥ 40 years from an ongoing nationwide prospective cohort in China. Baseline fruit intake information was collected by a validated food frequency questionnaire. Plasma HbA1c, fasting and 2 h post-loading glucose levels were measured at both baseline and follow-up examinations. Cox proportional hazards models were used to calculate hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for incident diabetes among participants with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) and prediabetes, after adjusted for multiple confounders. Restricted cubic spline analysis was applied for dose-response relation. RESULTS During a median 3.8-year follow-up, 5886 (7.36%) participants developed diabetes. Overall, we identified a linear and dose-dependent inverse association between dietary whole fresh fruit intake and risk of incident T2D. Each 100 g/d higher fruit intake was associated with 2.8% lower risk of diabetes (HR 0.972, 95%CI [0.949-0.996], P = 0.0217), majorly benefiting NGT subjects with 15.2% lower risk (HR 0.848, 95%CI [0.766-0.940], P = 0.0017), while not significant in prediabetes (HR 0.981, 95%CI 0.957-4.005, P = 0.1268). Similarly, the inverse association was present in normoglycemia individuals with a 48.6% lower risk of diabetes when consuming fruits > 7 times/week comparing to those < 1 time/week (HR 0.514, 95% CI [0.368-0.948]), but not in prediabetes (HR 0.883, 95% CI [0.762-1.023]). CONCLUSION These findings suggest that higher frequency and amount of fresh fruit intake may protect against incident T2D, especially in NGT, but not in prediabetes, highlighting the dietary recommendation of higher fresh fruit consumption to prevent T2D in normoglycemia population.

Abstract
There is an equivocal and inconsistent association between legume consumption and health outcomes and longevity. The purpose of this study was to examine and quantify the potential dose-response relationship between legume consumption and all-cause and cause-specific mortality in the general population. We conducted a systematic literature search on PubMed/Medline, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, and Embase from inception to September 2022, as well as reference lists of relevant original papers and key journals. A random-effects model was used to calculate summary HRs and their 95% CIs for the highest and lowest categories, as well as for a 50 g/d increment. We also modeled curvilinear associations using a 1-stage linear mixed-effects meta-analysis. Thirty-two cohorts (31 publications) involving 1,141,793 participants and 93,373 deaths from all causes were included. Higher intakes of legumes, compared with lower intakes, were associated with a reduced risk of mortality from all causes (HR: 0.94; 95% CI: 0.91, 0.98; n = 27) and stroke (HR: 0.91; 95% CI: 0.84, 0.99; n = 5). There was no significant association for CVD mortality (HR: 0.99; 95% CI: 0.91, 1.09; n =11), CHD mortality (HR: 0.93; 95% CI: 0.78, 1.09; n = 5), or cancer mortality (HR: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.72, 1.01; n = 5). In the linear dose-response analysis, a 50 g/d increase in legume intake was associated with a 6% reduction in the risk of all-cause mortality (HR: 0.94; 95% CI: 0.89, 0.99; n = 19), but no significant association was observed for the remaining outcomes. The certainty of evidence was judged from low to moderate. A higher legume intake was associated with lower mortality from all causes and stroke, but no association was observed for CVD, CHD, and cancer mortality. These results support dietary recommendations to increase the consumption of legumes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A dose-response and nonlinear association between fruit and vegetable intake and mortality has been reported in Europe and the United States, but little is known about this association in Asia. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the association of fruit and vegetable intake with all-cause, cancer, cardiovascular, and respiratory disease mortality in a Japanese cohort. METHODS In the Japan Public Health Center-based prospective study, we included 94,658 participants (mean age: 56.4; 46.0% male) without cancer and cardiovascular disease at baseline. Information on fruit and vegetable intake was collected using a validated FFQ. The Cox proportional hazard model was used to estimate HRs and 95% CIs of each quintile of fruit and vegetable intake, separately, in relation to all-cause and cause-specific mortality using the first quintile as a reference. Nonlinear associations were evaluated using a likelihood ratio test, comparing a linear model with a restricted cubic spline model. RESULTS During a median of 20.9 follow-up years (IQR: 19.6-23.8 y), 23,687 all-cause deaths were documented. After adjusting for age, sex, and potential confounding factors, fruit and vegetable intake was nonlinearly and significantly associated with lower all-cause mortality, with the fourth and fifth quintiles having comparable HRs (fruit: fourth quintile HR: 0.91; 95% CI: 0.87, 0.95 and fifth quintile HR: 0.92; 95% CI: 0.88, 0.96; P-nonlinearity < 0.001; vegetable: fourth quintile HR: 0.92; 95% CI: 0.88, 0.97 and fifth quintile HR: 0.93; 95% CI: 0.89, 0.98; P-nonlinearity = 0.002). Fruit intake was significantly associated with lower cardiovascular mortality (HR in the fifth quintile: 0.91; 95% CI: 0.83, 0.99; P-nonlinearity = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS In the Japanese population, higher intake of fruits and vegetables was nonlinearly associated with decreased all-cause mortality. These findings may contribute to the establishment of dietary recommendations for enhancing life expectancy in Asia.

Abstract
Background Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are currently the leading cause of premature death worldwide. Model-based early detection of high-risk populations for CVD is the key to CVD prevention. Thus, this research aimed to use machine learning (ML) algorithms to establish a CVD prediction model based on routine physical examination indicators suitable for the Xinjiang rural population. Method The research cohort data collection was divided into two stages. The first stage involved a baseline survey from 2010 to 2012, with follow-up ending in December 2017. The second-phase baseline survey was conducted from September to December 2016, and follow-up ended in August 2021. A total of 12,692 participants (10,407 Uyghur and 2,285 Kazak) were included in the study. Screening predictors and establishing variable subsets were based on least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) regression, logistic regression forward partial likelihood estimation (FLR), random forest (RF) feature importance, and RF variable importance. The selected subset of variables was compared with L1 regularized logistic regression (L1-LR), RF, support vector machine (SVM), and AdaBoost algorithm to establish a CVD prediction model suitable for this population. The incidence of CVD in this population was then analyzed. Result After 4.94 years of follow-up, a total of 1,176 people were diagnosed with CVD (cumulative incidence: 9.27%). In the comparison of discrimination and calibration, the prediction performance of the subset of variables selected based on FLR was better than that of other models. Combining the results of discrimination, calibration, and clinical validity, the prediction model based on L1-LR had the best prediction performance. Age, systolic blood pressure, low-density lipoprotein-L/high-density lipoproteins-C, triglyceride blood glucose index, body mass index, and body adiposity index were all important predictors of the onset of CVD in the Xinjiang rural population. Conclusion In the Xinjiang rural population, the prediction model based on L1-LR had the best prediction performance.

Abstract
Protein scarcity is the most vital cause of long-lasting diseases and even untimely deaths in some developing nations. The application of protein in food is advantageous from the point of view of non-toxicity, biocompatibility, and dietary benefits. This study aimed to determine the protein contents of the sprouts of Vigna radiates (mung beans), Lens culinaris (lentils), and Cicer arietinum (chickpeas) using the Kjeldahl and Lowry methods. The results obtained from the Kjeldahl method identified protein concentrations of 2.54, 2.63, and 2.19%, whereas the Lowry method results identified protein concentrations of 2.96%, 4.10%, and 1.6% in mung beans, lentils, and chickpeas, respectively. In both the methods, lentils were found to have the highest amount of protein followed by mung beans and chickpeas. Both the Kjeldahl and Lowry methods demonstrated good protein values and low variation in the protein amount in the analyzed samples. Furthermore, the methods had greater sensitivity and comparable experimental variability. The outcomes revealed that assays can be applied for protein analysis in legumes. In the context of a lack of suitable standard procedures for evaluating legumes’ compositions, the present study is suitable for food control laboratories. In addition, the studied samples represent a significant source of protein and can be used to fulfil the daily requirements for protein intake and other food applications.

Abstract
Background This cohort study created a risk equation of CVD for the Uyghur and Kazakh ethnic groups with metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Xinjiang and its associated factors, evaluated the model’s feasibility, and provided theoretical support for the prevention and early diagnosis of CVD. Methods A total of 5655 participants from Xinyuan and Jiashi counties in Xinjiang from 2010 to 2012 were selected, including 3770 and 1885 training and validation samples, respectively. A factor analysis was performed on 975 patients with MetS in the training sample, whereas potential factors related to CVD were extracted from 21 MetS biomarkers. Cox regression was used to create and verify a CVD-risk prediction model based on training samples. The receiver operating characteristic curve was drawn to evaluate the model’s prediction efficiency. Results The cumulative incidence of CVD was 9.20% (training sample, 9.12%; validation sample, 9.36%). Nine potential factors were extracted from the training sample population with MetS to predict the CVD risk: lipid (hazard ratio [HR], 1.205), obesity (HR, 1.047), liver function (HR, 1.042), myocardial enzyme (HR, 1.008), protein (HR, 1.024), blood pressure (HR, 1.027), liver enzyme (HR, 1.012), renal metabolic (HR, 1.015), and blood glucose (HR, 1.010). The area under the curve of the training and validation samples was 0.841 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.821–0.861) and 0.889 (95% CI, 0.870–0.909), respectively. Conclusion The CVD prediction model created with nine potential factors in patients with MetS in Kazakh and Uyghur has a good predictive power.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The oral route is the most frequently used and the most convenient route of drug administration, since it has several advantages, such as ease of use, patient compliance and better cost-effectiveness. However, physicochemical and biopharmaceutical limitations of various active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) hinder suitability for this route, including degradation in the gastrointestinal tract, low intestinal permeability and low bioavailability. To overcome these problems, while maintaining therapeutic efficacy, polymeric nanoparticles have attracted considerable attention for their ability to increase drug solubility, promote controlled release, and improve stability. In addition, the functionalization of nanocarriers can increase uptake and accumulation at the target site of action, and intestinal absorption, making it possible to obtain more viable, safe and efficient treatments for oral administration. <P> Objective: This systematic review aimed to seek recent advances in the literature on the use of polymeric nanoparticles functionalization to increase intestinal permeability of APIs that are intended for oral administration. <P> Method: Two bibliographic databases were consulted (PubMed and ScienceDirect). The selected publications and the writing of this systematic review were based on the guidelines mentioned in the PRISMA statement. <P> Results: Out of a total of 3036 studies, 22 studies were included in this article based on our eligibility criteria. The results were consistent for the application of nanoparticle functionalization to increase intestinal permeability. <P> Conclusion: The functionalized polymeric nanoparticles can be considered as carrier systems that improve the intestinal permeability and bioavailability of APIs, with the potential to result, in the future, in the development of oral medicines.

Abstract
Background/Aims: Health promotion and the incorporation of health-protective behaviors in people's lifestyles have a great role in enhancing individuals' overall health and well-being. College students are at increased risk of developing unhealthy dietary and lifestyle behaviors. A cross-sectional pilot study was conducted to assess the health-risk behaviors among undergraduate college students at Jordan University of Science and Technology. Methods: The final sample included 136 students, with a mean age of 21.1 ± 2.37 years, mostly females (69%). A self-reported questionnaire was used for data collection about dietary and lifestyle behaviors among college students. The questionnaire consisted of four parts: sociodemographic characteristics, body weight classifications, lifestyle behaviors, and dietary patterns and intake, and eating behaviors. Results: Most of the students did not meet the daily recommendations for fruit (76%) and vegetable (82%) intake. Males were significantly consuming fast food more frequently (p = 0.019), and smoked cigarettes (p < 0.001) or hookah (p = 0.015) more frequently than did females. Further, the majority met the recommendations for physical activity (81%), but exceeded recommendations for sedentary behavior. Females were more likely to have normal weight or be underweight (OR = 4.865), to have a fear of weight gain (OR = 3.387), and to have the recommended sleeping hours (OR = 7.685) than were males. Conclusion: The results indicate the health-risk behaviors and the gender-related differences among college students.

Abstract
The microstructural and physicochemical compositions of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), lentil (Lens culinaris Merr.), soybean (Glycine max L.), chickpea (Cicer aretinium L.) and lupine (Lupinus albus) were investigated over 2 and 4 days of germination. Different changes were noticed during microscopic observations (Stereo Microscope, SEM) of the legume seeds subjected to germination, mostly related to the breakages of the seed structure. The germination caused the increase in protein content for bean, lentil, and chickpea and of ash content for lentil, soybean and chickpea. Germination increased the availability of sodium, magnesium, iron, zinc and also the acidity for all legume types. The content of fat decreased for lentil, chickpea, and lupine, whereas the content of carbohydrates and pH decreased for all legume types during the four-day germination period. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic (FT-IR) spectra show that the compositions of germinated seeds were different from the control and varied depending on the type of legume. The multivariate analysis of the data shows close associations between chickpea, lentil, and bean and between lupine and soybean samples during the germination process. Significant negative correlations were obtained between carbohydrate contents and protein, fat and ash at the 0.01 level.
